He understands the position and with his physical presence he can definitely cause you problems. MP This is the lone edition of the Texas Derby with FC Dallas this year. What are some of your memories from past meetings with Dallas DK I think in the beginning when we first moved here it was very heated because there were antagonizers on both sides. With Carlos Ruiz and Eddie Robinson and the with dominic kinnear QU ESTIO N S BY MATT PED ER S E N Xs&Os battles they had it raised the level of competitiveness in the game. I think we ve always had good games with Dallas but I think in the early days because of the personnel it was very physical and players got after it. I m not saying the players don t do it now but because of the personnel on both sides there may have been some emotions that carried over from the San Jose-LA Galaxy rivalry days that added some fire to the games. MATT PEDERSEN The game time for today s match against FC Dallas was moved from 4 p.m. to 6 30 p.m. due to heat concerns. How happy are you with the time change DOMINIC KINNEAR I think they saw in the last couple games a few fans were taking refuge on the concourse and watching the game on TV. I know that we ve talked about it before with the league and I think it s good that some important people made some good decisions. MP FC Dallas is winless in its last nine games. They have certainly been hit with injuries. From what you have seen what has been a part of the problem for Dallas DK That s exactly what it s been - injuries and suspensions. Brek Shea has missed about three games and when guys are missing it tests the depth of the squad and sometimes you are hit with a lot and sometimes your squad is healthy. I think that has been a part of the problem and Schellas Hyndman hasn t had a full squad to pick from. MP Brek Shea had a great season in 2011 but has not repeated that success this season. What is your evaluation of Shea as a player DK He is an excellent player in my opinion. When he s Student Athlete of the Game Amaury Ponce Soccer 5-8 Soph. FULL STEAM AHEAD AFTER FOUR INJURY-PLAGUED SEASONS CALEN CARR SETTLES IN WITH DYNAMO BY MATT PEDERSEN After four consecutive seasons marred by injury Calen Carr showed his mettle early this season and moved from substitute to starter. The speedy attacker has locked in a regular place in Dominic Kinnear s starting lineup at right mid a different position than his familiar role of forward. Now the forward-turned-midfielder is happy with his role as it offers him a chance to be on the field and contribute while learning a new position. Carr needed offseason surgery this winter to repair the meniscus in his left knee and missed several weeks of preseason training. The surgery capped the fourth significant injury of his seven-year career and forced the California native to miss the first six games this season. But the resurgent Carr has now started six straight games on the right side of the midfield and is in no hurry to stop. Berkeley is a great place to grow up he said. My mom is a professor at Berkeley so I spent a lot of time on campus and I missed a good portion of the preseason with the knee injury but the trainers and medical staff did a great job of rehabbing it Carr said. I think the beginning part of the season being able to build minutes in the Reserve League games and training it gave me some time to really get stronger and give the knee time to heal on its own. Now I don t even think about it. It feels great and I m glad the injury is behind me. Carr a 6-foot attacker with a smart soccer mind grew up in Berkeley Calif. and became a regular on campus with his mother Dr. Claudia Carr a professor of environmental science at the University of California Berkeley. ended up going to school right at home. I grew up a Bears fan - thought for a second about leaving - but when I got the opportunity to go to Cal I couldn t pass up on it. Carr had a great career at Cal reaching the NCAA tournament in all four seasons and winning Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2005 after bagging 13 goals and four assists. starting our run to MLS cup. While the goal against the Union was his most important Carr produced a highlight-worthy goal against Spanish power Valencia in the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup on May 31. After receiving a clever chip from Luiz Camargo on the The Chicago Fire selected Carr with the No. 10 pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and he quickly endeared himself to Fire fans by scoring three goals in the U.S. Open Cup to help the Fire to its fourth Open Cup title. But after playing 22 league games as a rookie and 27 games in 2007 injuries ruined his next three seasons. Carr tore the ACL in his left knee in July 2008 and missed the remainder of the year and the first half of 2009. The next year Carr suffered a quadriceps injury and was on the shelf until August. Carr suffered a preseason concussion in 2011 with the Fire and was traded to the Dynamo for Dominic Oduro in March. While he loved his time in Chicago he was excited to join the Dynamo after building a relationship with Kinnear in college. I feel fortunate for the opportunity to come to Houston and play for Dom who is a coach that I ve admired since I was at Berkeley and he was coaching in San Jose Carr recalls. We were able to play against them and I was able to form a relationship with him at an early age. Houston was always a place that I admired from a far so when I got the opportunity to come here it was something that I really cherished. The concussion proved problematic and he did not appear in a competitive game until August. After close to four seasons tarnished by injury Carr came back just in time for Houston s run to MLS Cup. He scored a vital late equalizer at Columbus on Sept. 14 and started four of the final five regular season games as well as all four in the playoffs. In Houston s playoff game Oct. 30 at PPL Park in Philadelphia Carr delivered the game-winning goal in the 30th minute off a great feed from Brian Ching. The Dynamo were on their way to another great playoff run. It was definitely the most important goal of my career he said. It was the first game of the playoffs away in a tough environment and to score the decisive goal gave us a huge boost by starting off the playoffs on the right foot and far touchline Carr broke forward leaving three Valencia defenders in his wake including World Cup veteran David Albelda. With two more Valencia defenders closing on him just outside the box Carr cracked a left-footed shot that howled into the far corner of the goal for a brilliant equalizer. It s something that I will look back on and remember fondly Carr said of his highlight-reel goal. It was a play where instinct took over and things kept opening up for me to continue my run dribbling by a couple of guys and once I cut inside I just decided to have a go. When reminded that Brad Davis was asking for the ball in an open position to his left when he took the shot Carr acknowledges that some fun banter has followed. Brad and I joked about it a little bit after the goal he said. I told him that I had the better left foot and when it came on my left foot I just had to shoot it. I said I would expect the same from him if he was on his right foot. As he settles into the starting lineup Carr is also settling into the Houston community and establishing a relationship with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I ve always been involved in mentorship programs he said. in Chicago I was pretty involved in the community visiting schools coaching and putting on free clinics for kids. Now here in Houston I met some people from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and started going to some of their events and helping out when I had free time. Luckily Dynamo Charities has been very supportive by getting behind me and Big Brothers Big Sisters and I think we have some exciting things in the works for later this summer. While he is recognized by most fans for the protective helmet he wears on the field to prevent additional concussions don t be surprised if you find the urban California native hoofing around in some Texas boots. I really love hanging out in Houston and I m slowly becoming a Texan. I don t have cowboy boots yet but people are trying to persuade me to get some. The tournament will pit some of the top youth teams from around the world against each other over the course of the three days. Expected to attend the tournament are premier youth teams from across the United States and Mexico including MLS and Primera Divisi n academies. The tournament will feature teams at the U-13 U-14 U-15 U-16 and U-18 levels. Mexican powerhouse Chivas de Guadalajara has already committed to participate in this year s tournament. It s a great opportunity for elite players from around the country to get game experience against other similarlytalented players said Dynamo assistant director of youth development Eddie Robinson. It will be a lot of fun for these teams to come out and compete in a different format than they may be accustomed to. The tournament set-up will be similar to that of the famous Eurovoetbal tournament in the Netherlands which the Dynamo Academy competed in during the summer of 2011. Teams will play five games with two twenty-minute halves which should provide plenty of exciting attacking soccer said Robinson. The event will be held at the state-of-the-art Houston Amateur Sports Park training home to the Houston Dynamo first team and youth academy. This modern training facility opened in 2011 regularly hosts MLS Reserve League matches and youth tournaments on its six grass soccer fields. In addition to the tournament players will have the opportunity to watch the Houston Dynamo take on Toronto FC on August 25 at BBVA Compass Stadium For more information about the tournament visit HOUSTONDYNAMO.COM DYNAMOACADEMYCUP GEOFF CAMERON NAMED HUMANITARIAN OF THE MONTH Houston Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron has been named the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Month for June after the Dynamo defender raised more than 30 000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Cameron was inspired to raise money for LLS after Tim DaPonte a former youth soccer teammate and close friend of his was diagnosed with stage-two Hodgkin s Lymphoma in January 2011. I was very humbled to be given the opportunity to raise money for LLS Cameron said. Tim is a major inspiration for me and I m thankful I was able to give something back to him and to the countless others who are affected by this disease. I m honored to be named Humanitarian of the Month and I hope this award brings more awareness to LLS and the great work they do. Through various initiatives including a FIFA Street video game tournament a celebrity pour and silent auctions Cameron and Dynamo Charities raised more than 30 000 for LLS. Cameron also partnered with Sarah Pepper from The HOT Show for the celebrity pour and a karaoke event with all proceeds benefiting Cameron s and Pepper s Man and Woman of the Year campaigns. Sponsors of Cameron s campaign included Dynamo Charities Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and Rivela Plastic Surgery. Although Cameron did not raise the most money in the 2012 LLS Man of the Year campaign the Dynamo defender is thrilled with the work that he was able to do to bring more awareness to the cause. Everyone knows someone who is affected with cancer but not everyone is in a position to do something about it Cameron said. Fortunately I am in a position where I can raise funds and build awareness for an organization that is trying to find a cure for this disease. We may not have raised the most money but I feel great knowing the money we did raise is going to an organization committed to the cause. This is the second time that Cameron has been honored as the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Month. His first honor came in October 2011 when he raised 20 000 for the local chapters of The Fisher House and The Ronald McDonald House. kickin it BOBBYBOSWELL What is your favorite part about Houston knows how to have a good time. I always meet some interesting and nice people wherever I go. I really don t know. I would still be playing soccer probably at the recreational level. I love the athletes WITH BOBBY BOSWELL My favorite part about Houston is the people. Everyone If you weren t a professional soccer player what would you be that say that they would be playing another professional sport when it s not as easy as they think. I m sure I would be doing something in business or acting. I ve always had a lot of dreams and I don t know which one I would have pursued. Who was your biggest role model growing up I always looked up to athletes. I m not sure that s a great idea in today s world. I had a board in my room when I was young and I always put professional soccer players on it and other great football basketball and baseball players. Obviously you always look up to your father and my father had four boys. He raised four good kids he was tough on us but he got us to where we are today so I guess I could say he was a role model. What do you enjoy doing away from the soccer field I really enjoy fishing. Anytime that we have days off I always find myself on the boat. I also spend time with my son and I love to go to the movies as well. What s on your reading list Right now I m reading Ball Four which is a baseball book. Steve Ralston and I are reading Fifty Shades of Grey together. I ve also read all of the Chelsea Handler and David Sedaris books.
