He s got a big body and puts himself in good areas. He is a hard worker and has a lot of confidence and it shows in the way he plays. MATT PEDERSEN Toronto FC s Director of Player Development Paul Mariner replaced Aron Winter as head coach on June 7. How well do you know him and do you think he can succeed in this league DOMINIC KINNEAR I know Paul very well. We were teammates in the early 90s with the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks (American Professional Soccer League) and I ve always had a good relationship with him. I do think he can be successful he was an MLS assistant coach for a number of years and he has played at a great level including the World Cup and he won trophies in England. I think he s one of the more respected guys in MLS. MP Netherlands striker Danny Koevermans leads Toronto with three goals this year after tallying eight goals in 2011. What do you think of him as a player DK He is a goal scorer and very smart in the 18-yard box. He and Ryan Johnson are having good seasons and Danny has battled some injuries. But when he is on the field he is very alert in the attacking areas. He is a good finisher uses his body very well and he has good movement inside the box. The Revs were a team stacked with talent including MLS all-time assist leader Steve Ralston reigning league MVP Taylor Twellman and 2004 Rookie of the Year Clint Dempsey. Given the attacking talent of New England it would have been a foolish to bet on an 18-year-old rookie to start at left back for the Galaxy. But LA Galaxy head coach Steve Sampson saw enough in a young kid out of Clemson to give him a start on the day. The MLS career of current Dynamo jack-of-all-trades Nathan Sturgis began that afternoon and the young left back spared his coach any April Fools jokes. Sturgis played the first 71 minutes and held his own against Ralston Twellman and his primary assignment on the day Dempsey. The mild-mannered Dynamo newcomer grew up in St. Augustine Fla. in a sports-loving family. Nathan s dad Sturgis was gifted enough to have some legitimate experience before his first MLS game that afternoon. In That was a great moment Sturgis recalls six years later. That was my rookie year and fortunately the Galaxy were in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and I was able to play I played left back and Dempsey was playing right mid so I the time. powerhouse Saprissa Sturgis played against some of the best youth players in the world starting at age 16. THE MAN wHO HELPED DEFEAT ARGENTINA AND BRAzIL in some games against Saprissa before the season actually started. That was a great experience to make my first start. got a good taste of one of the best players in the league at addition to the Champions Cup matchup with Costa Rican played tennis at Flagler College and instilled a competitive streak in his kids. Sports runs through our family he said. All of my brothers and sisters played soccer. We ve always been sportsoriented and my parents always wanted us to be outside and out of the house. There is probably a competitive streak that runs through our family and we probably got that from our Dad. It worked. Nate s sister Lydia played soccer at the College of William & Mary and his older brother Luke played soccer at Flagler. His younger brother Caleb is the kicker at the University of Florida and was a 2011 finalist for the Lou Groza Award given to the best kicker in the country. The summer Sturgis turned 18 when most kids are graduating from high school Sturgis was in the Netherlands with the U.S. under-20 national team competing at the U-20 FIFA World Championships. In the first group game the U.S. pulled off a major upset of Argentina 1-0. In between the two youth world championships Sturgis played at Clemson where he was a teammate of former Dynamo star Stuart Holden. Holden was actually my host on my recruiting visit there Sturgis recollects. He was there for my freshman year and was a good player. You could definitely see the traits that have helped him succeed in the last several years when he has done very well. He was a great guy and was nice to us freshman. In 2005 with Holden departed Sturgis won ACC Defensive Player of the Year and led the Tigers on a great run to the College Cup college soccer s version of the Final Four. Along the way Clemson recorded four shutouts in its four wins over Coastal Carolina North Carolina State Notre Dame and Creighton. The run ended with a 2-1 defeat to New Mexico in the national semifinal. I played center back and we had a really good team Sturgis entered as a first-half substitute and helped the U.S. to a clean sheet against an Argentina side that included halftime substitute Lionel Messi. Argentina would win the tournament and Messi take home Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament honors with six goals scored. But on that day the red white and blue kept him off the score sheet. That was a really good experience for me Sturgis recalls. Being that young I was just starting out in college. I d been playing with the U-20s before that and had played in some international games against some good teams but to play in a tournament like that and get that kind of exposure was a great experience. Two years later at the 2007 U-20 World Cup in Canada Sturgis was part of a backline that pulled off another upset a 2-1 defeat of Brazil in the final group game. The confident group stormed into the knockout round where Sturgis helped the U.S. to a 2-1 extra-time win over Uruguay which featured current Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. The Americans would be upset by Austria 2-1 in the quarterfinals but the experience again proved worthwhile. That was another good experience Sturgis said. We had a really good team and a good group of guys. We did well in the group stage and won our first knockout game. It was disappointing how we went out I thought we had a really good team and thought we could have at least made it to the final four but we lost to Austria. he said. We got hot during the second half of the year and had a good group of guys a good back four and a good goalkeeper. We pulled off some upsets. It was a disappointing end as we ended up losing to New Mexico. After two years with the Galaxy who drafted Sturgis with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2006 SuperDraft Sturgis was traded to Real Salt Lake. Following two years with RSL Sturgis helped the Seattle Sounders to U.S. Open Cup titles in 2009 and 2010. He was selected by Vancouver in the 2011 expansion draft and promptly traded to Toronto FC. Finally after a year in Canada he joined the Dynamo in December when Houston traded for him with Dominic Kinnear citing his versatility along the midfield and backline as attractive qualities. I was happy to come to Houston where (the organization) is more settled and established than Toronto he said. I think that makes it easier as a player to come into a team that is always going in a certain direction and you can get in and find your role in that system that is already built. Now 24 Sturgis has a great deal of experience to draw upon as he looks to build his career. I feel I do have a lot of experience to build off of but I also have some room to improve and get better he said. I m at the stage right now where I am pushing myself to improve on the things I need to improve on to set myself up to accomplish my goals. For Lopez those little things have added up to some pretty big things in his life including winning a 10 000 college scholarship from Statoil lead sponsor of the Dynamo Academy. The scholarship in its inaugural year is given to one senior within the Academy for a 500-1 000 word essay answering one of three topics offered to them. A panel of judges selected Lopez as the first recipient of this award. Those around Lopez have taken notice of both his I wrote about leadership and what it means on and off the field Lopez said. You have to be mature and take care of yourself and do the little things to be with the Academy. soccer skills and his leadership which has resulted in him committing to Purdue University Calumet to play soccer. I didn t work hard at first he said. But I realized that everything gets easier the harder you work. That and doing the little things like not going to sleep late or drinking plenty of water have helped me grow as a player and a man. Lopez admits that he has not always been as detailoriented as he should have been. His time in the Academy though has helped him realize what he has to do to become the man and player that he wants to be. Being in the Academy makes you realize what leadership is all about. Juan is a phenomenal midfielder said Purdue University Calumet men s soccer coach James Drzewiecki in a team statement. I ve had the chance to watch him play several times and have always come away impressed. He makes quick high quality decisions with the ball and he treats the game his teammates and his opponents with great respect. Thanks to the Statoil scholarship Lopez s transition from Chavez High School in south Houston to Purdue University Calumet in Hammond Indiana will be a little bit easier despite the weather differences. [This scholarship] will help cover tuition books and housing Lopez said. It makes things a lot easier. It s exciting to just go and play with a new team new teammates and to move to a new state. Even though here in Houston it s really hot and up there it can get pretty cold. But his dreams hardly stop at college. Lopez will major in business management and hopes to one day manage his own soccer training facility here in Houston. I want to hopefully offer the same opportunities that I have been given to other kids he said. Lopez hopes that those plans can wait until after his playing days are over however. He has been impressive in his time with the Dynamo Academy team playing in 64 U.S. Academy League games as well as being a part of the team that traveled to El Salvador in 2009 and beat their U-16 national team. [Juan] is a fantastic kid who has worked really hard on and off the field said James Clarkson director of youth development for the Houston Dynamo. He fully deserves the scholarship and it will have a real impact on his life. We are all very proud that he is going to college and of the man he has become. Who was your biggest role model growing up Growing up I had a few but my mom would have to be number one. What do you enjoy doing away from the soccer field I enjoy going to the driving range. I m not very good at golf but I m pretty good at driving a ball so if I have any free time I try to go to the range.
