DESIGN Leslie Lopez Juan Loya EDITORIAL Jonathan Kaplan Matt Pedersen Ben Crook PHOTOGRAPHERS Nigel Brooks Scott DeWoody Luis Leyva Wilf Thorne Anthony Vasser MP 19-year-old Jack McInerney had two goals on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City. He joined MLS at 17 years of age and now seems to be given a chance by Hackworth. What have you seen from McInerney in his short time in the league dK He had a great game against Kansas City. I like the way he plays and think he makes good runs. When he releases the ball he takes a look around to see if there is any danger and finds the space. He has played well against us in our previous meetings. He is another smart player and makes good runs off the ball. MP The Dynamo defeated the Union 3-1 on aggregate in the playoffs last year. What memories do you have from that series win over Philadelphia dK We played a great road game. It wasn t a typical road game but it was a tough one. We played really well in the first half and Philadelphia piled it on in the second half. Tally [Hall] made some great saves and we defended well. How well do you know Hackworth and what do you think of his opportunity doMinic Kinnear I like John a lot he is a very honest and nice person. He did some great things with the U.S. Under-17s in Bradenton Fla. (2002-07) and I thought he was working well with Peter. Now with Peter gone it has given John a chance to be a head coach and I think he has already done well with a great 4-0 win over Kansas City last weekend. MP Philadelphia has struggled to score with 12 goals in 13 games but two players who have carried the load are Panamanian midfielder Gabriel Gomez (4 goals) and Colombian forward Lionard Pajoy (4 goals). What are your impressions of Gomez and Pajoy dK I think Gomez is a smart player. He is very dangerous on set pieces and is a good passer of the ball. Pajoy is busy around the box is not afraid to be physical and is also very smart. MY tEAMMAtES wOULD DEScrIbE ME AS laid back FAVOrItES Movie Paid in Full TV Show The Game Book Scorpions Professional athlete Brandon Roy Professional sports team Oklahoma City Thunder Actor Mike Epps COREYASHE a marine s son brings consistency work-ethic to houston BY MAT T PEDERS EN When Dynamo defender Corey Ashe started on May 15 against the Portland Timbers it marked the 137th MLS regular season appearance for the 26-year-old moving him into second on the franchise list for regular season games played. The milestone match was a testament to the consistency that Ashe has shown since his arrival in 2007. Ashe who carries an actions speak louder than words mentality with him on and off the field did not know he had reached second place on the Dynamo games list. He credits health and confidence as key ingredients to staying in the lineup. Staying healthy is important but I think more vital is the confidence Dom (Kinnear) has had in me the sixth-year veteran said. My rookie year a lot of the older guys said Dom sees something in you because he doesn t usually play the younger guys. I don t know what it was that I did but I think it shows that Dom has a lot of trust in me. Staying healthy is also a huge thing. You could say it is God s blessing and I have been very fortunate. Spenny (John Spencer) who took me under his wing and gave me the confidence that I needed to survive. He helped me with the little things. He allowed me to see what my strengths were and to use those strengths against the other team. Now in his sixth year in Houston the city has nearly become as The older players were accurate with their assessment as Ashe became the first of only three Dynamo rookies in team history to play in more than 20 games in their first season. Ashe played well enough to appear in 22 games as a rookie in 2007 a season in which the Dynamo had an amazing stable of midfielders including Brad Davis Dwayne De Rosario Ricardo Clark Brian Mullan and Stuart Holden who helped carry the Dynamo to its second consecutive MLS Cup title. permanent of a hometown as Ashe has known. The defender grew up in Virginia Beach Va. in a military family before moving to the U.S. men s national team Residency Program in Bradenton Fla. as a teenager. My dad was in the Marines for 22 years so he travelled a lot Ashe said. Before I was born he lived in New York Virginia (twice) and Japan. I lived in California for five years and then moved to Virginia. When I was 14 or 15 I then moved to the Residency Program in Bradenton. While Ashe s job requires precision with his delivery from the left flank his older brother Dre held a position that required a different level of accuracy Army Sniper. Dre was a sniper in the Army for four years and now he works for the FBI Ashe said. It was a different route that he took. He is definitely the G.I. Joe of the family. He is a hard-nosed guy one that I ve always looked up to and he s my older brother. It was difficult for my family and for me to go about my business knowing he is over there fighting for our country and you would hope he is OK. He didn t really share too much information- that s something he wouldn t brag about. The important part is that he is back home he did what he needed to do and he is now I guess behind a desk if you will. Brad Davis coincidentally Ashe s partner on the left side of the field is doing his part to show appreciation to Dre and families such as the Ashe s. Through his Brad s Brigade campaign Dynamo fans can send members of the armed forces and their families to the Dynamo vs. Chicago Fire game on July 3 with partial ticket proceeds benefitting Paralyzed Veterans of America Texas Chapter. I think what Brad does is awesome Ashe says. The support that he gives to the troops is amazing. These last few years the troops have received a lot of recognition which is great. What they do for this country is second to none. The dedication not only themselves but from the families is strong. As a kid to witness your father leave every couple of months and not spend as much time with his as you want is hard. It s great for them to come to our games and enjoy time with the family. healthy is important staying -- corey ashe Since Ashe set the initial club rookie record in 2007 only two but i think more vital is the confidence dom has had in me. Dynamo players have eclipsed his mark. Geoff Cameron made 23 appearances as a rookie in 2008 and Will Bruin set a new record by playing in 25 games a year ago. Ashe was selected by the Dynamo in the second round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of North Carolina the school he always wanted to go to partly because as he wryly pointed out when listing its qualifications Michael Jordan went there. When I first arrived here I was only 20 and it was nervewracking Ashe recalls. But the team had been great and a lot of the older guys were awesome. Guys like Brian Mullan Craig Waibel Eddie Robinson and others would tell me Anything you need we ll take care of it. It made me feel like this is my new home and this is my new family. Dom and the whole staff were great and it took a little bit of adjusting to the heat but overall it was a pretty quick adjustment. A forward at North Carolina Ashe had to make a fast transition to midfielder with the Dynamo. He cites Mullan and former Dynamo assistant coach John Spencer as key figures in the adjustment. Brian Mullan was it for me he said. He worked both sides of the ball. I would talk with him and he gave me a lot of advice motivation and told me the things I needed to hear. School is out for the summer and you are 18 years old. 7 a.m. should not exist in your world but you have to be at work in 90 minutes. You have an unpaid internship for the summer looking to gain experience in what you hope will eventually be your full-time profession. You are just like so many other students trying to get a sense of what the real world is all about while improving your skills to compete in the workforce at some point. The only difference is that your boss is two-time MLS Cup winner Dominic Kinnear and your colleagues are the likes of Brian Ching and Brad Davis. You are a Dynamo Academy player waking up to play soccer with the Houston Dynamo first team and you are training in the hopes that one day the first team will become your team. This is the life of Bradley Bourgeois (pictured above) Abe Matamoros (pictured right) and a select number of Academy standouts. They have been given the unique opportunity to train alongside some of the best MLS has to offer. Given the opportunity that lies ahead for them maybe a 7 a.m. walk-up call is not such a bad thing. If Bradley s starting in the Reserve League then he should be In addition to training with the first team Bourgeois has played in nine MLS Reserve League appearances in the past two years which his coaches hope will give him a leg up when he starts his college career at Tulsa. It s a different mindset with the Academy said Bourgeois. It s not a job and it s not something that you re getting paid to do. When you get with the first team you re going against guys who are thirty years old and this is how they make their living. Having that mentality and that attitude is very different. Part of that learning experience is getting through the transition from the youth game to the professional one which is as much of a mental adjustment as it is a physical one. I love waking up that early in the morning when I m going to do something that I love said Bourgeois a Cy-Fair High School graduate who will attend the University of Tulsa on a soccer scholarship in the fall. It s an opportunity that not every kid gets so it s one that you definitely want to remember. I am trying to take in as much as possible and learn as much as I can. able to start and play every week at Tulsa and continue his growth said Dynamo director of youth development James Clarkson. Playing with these professional players is a fantastic learning experience for these guys. Matamoros who made the jump from the Dynamo Academy to collegiate soccer at Tulsa last year is back in Houston for the summer and ready to seize the chance to play with the Dynamo regulars. I ve been waiting a really long time for this opportunity said Matamoros. I want to show Dom what I have learn from everybody and gain confidence in my abilities. I know that if I can play with these guys then I can play with anyone in the country. Although this is the first time for Matamoros to train with the first team he did make four appearances in last year s Reserve League. Due to NCAA regulations once a player begins collegiate play he is unable to play in the MLS Reserve League without losing his collegiate eligibility. Even with that limited exposure to the professional game Matamoros believes his small stint with the first team made a large difference when he got to Tulsa. In his freshman campaign Matamoros played in 17 games and was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team. I was more aggressive and quicker after playing with the reserves he said. The effort that they give is top notch. Being able to go 110% for the whole match is definitely an advantage because I don t think every team does that. As with any internship both players hope that it will one day lead to a full-time job. It just so happens that they need only look around the pitch to see how the work they are putting in today can pay off in a roster spot in the future. Players such as Tyler Deric Alex Dixon and Josue Soto parlayed their time with the Academy into professional contracts with the Dynamo and their presence gives these young men a glimpse into what the future may hold. It gives me hope that I ll be there soon said Matamoros. Seeing these guys out there makes me think that I m not too far from being there. Added Bourgeois It shows you that it s something that can become a reality. These are guys who have come all the way from club to college and they re living the dream right now. It makes me want to go out everyday and work harder and get better all around because I know that anything is possible. a bicycle kick to the tastebuds. We made it to the finals and lost but it was a great experience because it was the first time my community had entered any type of competition. What are some of the differences between living in Houston and in Jamaica Living here is better than in Jamaica. In Jamaica a lot of people have a free spirit and do whatever they want but here people are more about business whether it s at work or at home. What do you enjoy most about Houston I like the weather here in Houston. Sometimes it gets hot but I enjoy playing in the sun. Also the fans and the stadium here are great and it makes it really enjoyable to be a part of this team. What do you enjoy doing when you aren t playing soccer I enjoy hanging out with the guys and going bowling. Also Jermaine and I do a lot of cooking back in the apartment because he is a very good cook. Do you cook as well or does Jermaine do most of the cooking No I m not a good cook but I eat a lot so whenever Jermaine cooks he cooks a lot. Even before games we always make a special dish. Sometimes it s rice peas and curry chicken and other times it s rice peas and French fried chicken. Those are good meals before the game to get you pumped up.
