It s too late to walk out and look for another but you promise never to go through that and you never buy your dresses from that discount store again.Clothing is an essential canvas of who we are and often we think our personalities are different from everyone else thus we think that no other person is like us and we are in our own light unique. Wrong--we are a universal community of the same type of people. The difference is our location. Sometimes your next door neighbour could have the exact qualities that build up a persona just as you and chances are more often than not you ll think the girl next door must truly envy you because she is an exact replica of you. Not only is she thinking the same thing but she pretends you re the loony bin in this whole equation. dress up in and never look like the girl next door or those three other girls at the church service this 4 never be anything on display. Yes the best items in a store are mainly put on that window display but how can you look good with everything else that has been stacked away at the back of the store shelves without looking better than every other girl in the room Simple that s why there are trend reports and occasional fashion weeks all around the world. The focus of all of these events is based on trend shifting. The latest DKNY dress doesn t necessarily mean that the actual dress color and detail is what you should buy--chances are the rest of the neighbourhood fashion fundi s saw the same dress on display and will get one too. Now your aim is to look deeper and think past what the naked eye can and make sure you look drop dead gorgeous in less than a second minus the camping out at those the fashion week dresses you saw on the runway. In 3 easy steps you will learn how to put together O of your era. This will be a basic ensemble of the dress coat jacket and shoes. Namely cut color and detail. 1. CUT The dress look out for modern silhouettes this season straight clean silhouettes are coming back in. You want to look out for hemlines that stretch just beneath the family gathering or a church service but is also one hem length that is suitable for all heights. Necklines will be cut real deep mostly geometric cut outs but for every deep neckline there is an accompanying short neckline. V-neck and square necklines should be your go to area for a woman with a fuller bust you re looking to get a V-neck--it not only gives your bust a more slimmer and appealing look but it gives you an elegance that you won t create with the spoken word. For women with a smaller bust it s the ultimate square neckline. And it does the opposite of the V-neck by giving your bust a wider look and making small beBe on the lookout for extra bits like elbow length sleeves for short women--if your arm is a bit chunky steer away from gathered leg-o-mutton sleeves. Taller women have the option of going for an elbow length dress or sleeveless dress as per arm excess. Desirable fabrics for this season are lightweight felt chiffon satin and lace. The coat the coat will be one ensemble of every dress with sleeves pick a sleeveless shouldn t be too overbearing--simplicity and elegance is all it should say but this doesn t mean in the slightest that a plain old bolero will be the best thing you can throw over a dress. In fact this is the worst piece of clothing many women have continuously that shouldn t make the dress. After all you still have to look good with it off. A waist length coat is great for petite women with a dress that has a seam at the waist. This and not only do you look slimmer but you add a bit of height to your body. For taller women you will have to go the extra mile with a coat that goes right beneath the hip area. A coat that is paired with a dress should never go beneath the actual hem length of the dress. In this instance for both types of women the coat shouldn t have a collar or lapel this style is a less tailored coat and more lifestyle wear piece of garb. shoes. We have the most favored platform stiletto it s fuller in the front and slimmer at the back. Preferably this would be ideal for a slimmer woman whether tall or short ette can carry the extra weight with your slim look. For fuller women it should be a pump style stiletto which gives your legs a slender appeal and your curves become more appealing with the entire attention drawn right beneath that knee length dress hem line. Patent leather and suede are your destinations for fabrication of shoes and this is the one area without restriction. COLOR The dress it s a celebration although this isn t a go ahead for the most elaborate colors but instead for the most sensible. Black is off the radar gone are the days black would be considered a desirable color for any woman looking to appear slimmer elegant and highly sophisticated. Color is will be a great big task. All women can wear the same color given their shape and height except there is a point where we have to (continued on pg 9) 5 Designer Easter Eggs Photos by Lindsey Pavlyuchek By Thuli Mphasa the ages. In Eastern religion meat and dairy are not consumed and it is at Easter time that eggs are boiled and presented as gifts for children and servants. This custom could be one of the many reasons why eggs are considered an Easter tradition. Across the world many religions have incorporated the egg in celebrations during Easter and springtime. Easter eggs have taken on many forms with the very olate covered marshmallows with a yellow marshmallow at the centre representing the yolk of an egg. The tradition progressed into moulded eggs with hollow centres or chewy and sticky bits at the centre of the eggs. With further innovation there have been other elements such as the Easter bunny added to one of Easter s many symbolic components. Over the years different egg concepts have come to pass and one that has stayed is the designer egg. Designers worldwide have come to produce many jewelled egg designs and some porcelain painted eggs. Turning this modern trend into a fetish for lovers of the Easter egg most of these designer eggs have fast become collector items. designer eggs this one was one of a kind though. Gustav Farbege founded the House of Farbege a Russia. The House of Farbege has a great reputation for their jewel-encrusted egg designs. It was Gustav s son Carl Farbege s intricate work and exhibition at the Hermitage museum that led to an esteemed title of Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown and by this a lifelong friendship would be Over the years Easter has become the time to get in touch with your inner child. We have activities such as Easter egg hunts in the garden and the chance to just eat that chocolate egg without guilt. Chocolate companies have improved commercial appeal of Easter products bringing in more products such as the Easter bunny chicken and basket chocolate moulds. In this modern day and time designer eggs are fast becoming a great trend too giving the older Easter egg consumer a more mature take and association with the trend. Eggs have always been a tradition around Easter celebrations in religion and the spring season in Eastern countries. The exact origin of the actual incorporation of the egg is not precise as with many traditions created. It somehow started off a simple habit with the conditions of the activities taking place around this fast or ancient Persian New Year eggs have become a symbol in marking the beginning and end and it is every man to his own. The global unison shared with the egg that I have found through research is that the egg vital aspect of new life and fertility. For whatever reason you choose to incorporate the egg into your Easter celebrations know that a million other people are with you in spirit celebrating the very same essence that you have chosen. Easter eggs are widely associated with a childlike fantasy of the Easter bunny. We have over the years had an impression that at this time of year the Easter bunny is the carrier of these wonderful treats. But how did eggs become associated with Easter The Easter egg has represented new life and fertility throughout 6 had the House of Farbege create an Easter egg for the Empress Maria Ferdonorva his wife. This egg was one of a kind as it had many compartments in it and could be opened four times over to reveal three different jewels inside. First it reveals a gold yolk then a gold chicken which then opens to reveal a replica of the Imperial Crown from which a small ruby egg was suspended. Over the years Tsar Alexander made this into a tradition and the Empress would receive an egg every Easter as a gift from him. The House of Farbege Farbege went on to design the Brut cologne and many other entities under their brand. To date there have been websites popping up to give the ordinary person a run through making your own designer eggs for display at the dinner table egg hunts staged in the garden to be given as gifts. The Easter egg is another one of those international symbols that ties the whole world together. As free and democratic a world we live in not all things are made for everyone and besides the aim is to make a statement not a festive carnival right For a darker skinned woman pastel pallets are a must have for this edition. There are 3 pallets to look for yellow blue and green. Not only are these colors vibrant but they break the stereotype and allow for you to go the extra mile in looking like a beaut. Pastel pallets are much softer than actual primary colors with the appeal that they have been dipped in a shade of milky white to almost give a toned look and downplay the actual brightness of the color. For a fairer skinned woman you could go for an actual yellow from the primary pallet and the pastels too are an option. For a lighter skinned woman a primary pallet of the colors would be more sensible and will suit you well. The coat & shoes a complimentary color should go with the shoe. Not only can all items be of each of the 3 colors but you can pair them as per color scheme for a yellow dress a green shoe and coat will do. Have fun with this bit--there are no set restrictions. 2. DETAIL The dress coat & shoe detail is of the essence but not a great big bother. For all 3 items stay as far away as possible from the diamante and metallic detail on shoulders. If anything for every personality there is a little bit of want and need for detail. If you should take the initiation and really feel like it is a life and death situation minimal touches of these details should apply and if these details do not go for the same detail in the other two pieces. With that said now you re equipped with the 3 most vital tools in ensuring that you not only become the envy of that family gathering or church service this Easter but you ll have no regrets about going to that discount store and no more camping out at designer retailers the night before. The weather is great and it s time to start spending time in the sun after being bundled up all winter. I am writing in four parts different recipes to pull together a get-together full of great refreshing mouth-watering and light spring foods. Appetizers are a great way to kick off a get-together. Most would say a get-together isn t one at all without appetizers. Spring gives you a great opportunity to try new scrumptious appetizers other than the ones we commonly expect such as pigs in a blanket chips and salsa and party meatballs. I have two great refreshing recipes that will change the way you look at appetizers and will make you want to add to your list of starters. refreshing starter for any meal.. If you did not know shrimp helps with the healthy growth of hair and skin due to the amount of protein found in shrimp. It s full of omega 3 fatty acids which is proven to it also helps stabilize blood sugar and keep thyroids healthy. After they have chilled rinse well and drain making sure to pat dry with a paper towel so that the coating will stick. Return the shrimp to a bowl and add the olive oil parsley lemon peel garlic pepper and the rest of the Caribbean jerk seasoning. I believe this is because we are a model of making true diversity work religions multi-cultural neighborhoods food holidays activities and more. The businesses schools and government all work together amazingly well. What a great opportunity for people to see the different facets of the community operating as one We have the largest mosque in the country right here in Dearborn. We also have mosques located throughout the city one of which is located right across the street from our local Dearborn Sausage and Ham Company. There s also a Catholic Church right next to another mosque. There s even a Christian church that shares their building with a group so that they can have their Moslem services on Sunday afternoons. How s that for diversity working at its best We have many different businesses here in the area. We are primarily known as the home of Ford Motor Company. Multiple factories around the city of Dearborn and Detroit are base for the creators of the many Ford models and for distribution centers for this Photos by Kimberly Bratic amazing company. Ford Motor Company sponsors an amazing Museum known as The Henry Ford. It is the largest indoor and outdoor museum of its kind and shows many acres of memories from our past that covers diversity in so many ways. It ranges from Thomas Edison s lab to the Wright Brother s home from glass blowing shops and some of the original farms (including Firestone s) to farm houses that have been restored assembly line of Henry Ford. The ethnicity of our town includes Polish German Arabic and European cultures melded together in this relatively small town of 97 000. Our Arabic population makes up the largest ethnic group here but it also has its own cultural diversity encompassing Iraqi Lebanese Yemeni Syrian and Palestinian subgroups. The food opportunities here are amazing We have fresh fruit markets all over town. Each market is associated with the different villages in the Middle Eastern area that they have come from allowing inexpensive produce to be available to us every day. Where else 12 in the northeastern side of this country can you buy fresh mangos or pomegranates anytime of the year Having such a high population of Middle Eastern people in our area has created many Arabic restaurants that produce some amazing food and baked goods for us to enjoy I love my tabbouleh fattoush baklava and my favorite shawarma sandwiches Now I just need to learn how to make these amazingly healthy and delicious dishes We also have incredibly diverse holidays celebrated here. We have Christmas Hanukkah Eid Ramadan Kwanzaa and Hajj. The schools actually close not only for Christmas like the rest of the country but they also close for Eid. Eid is the festival that celebrates the end of Ramadan. We have so much to do and see here from local Friday music concerts in the summer many parks with city pools that have different events on the weekends and the museums to the largest IMAX theatre. You can even tour the Rouge (Ford) factory plant. There is also the Fairlane mall which is 3 stories and full of so many stores you could spend a whole weekend just in there You can also take a drive to the East side of Dearborn and it s like driving into Lebanon. All of the signs are in Arabic with multiple small businesses that cater to the culture of each particular village from their Middle Eastern corner of the world We have a plethora of opportunities here to see the world from a different perspective than most people will ever have a chance to see Our diversity yells from the rooftops to tell the world that it can be an amazing opportunity to learn grow and teach each other about ourselves. Coming to Dearborn is a must It is a great place to visit but an even more incredible place to live I love this cool city. These - - 14 15 A New Easter A New Self To every man a new life. It is around most religious holidays that we are given yet another chance to either be to start over by turning a new page to the many chapters of our lives. We seldom look into the real meaning of any religious holidays and could so easily imply the meaning of each religious holiday. Yet another religious holiday has come into the works and this one has brought with it a sensible spirit of gratitude just as any other would. Except this time I urge you to fully take the time out and consider what this time means both truthfully to you and its intended meaning. The resurrection of Christ has not only become one of the Bible s greatest recorded miracles but the one way Jesus chose to prove the authenticity of his preaching on this very earth--that of him being the son of God. This not only became a way to defy the enemy but to give his believers a chance at a new life walking beside him and once again a renewed and strengthened faith. The idea that Jesus died for the sins of man does not lend full impact when an ordinary unknowing individual doesn t understand that it was not God s will for his who requested this and willingly saw the importance of this act. Now in resurrection Jesus not only proved his authenticity but he proved to man that they had been forgiven and could begin to walk well in his light. Not only do we have to recognize Jesus deity but we have to acknowledge the importance of a time like this and learn to practice the spirit of a new self and have gratitude for God s grace upon the human race. New self comes into play when we make the will to start over when we look past our mistakes and give ourselves the in human acts for as long as we are on this earth. To be human has its perks and drawbacks. Sometimes we will do good and other times we will do bad for every man that beats himself up for doing wrong a long road to new life is yet to be laid out for him it is merely a process of accepting our mistakes and acknowledging that we can begin to curb and possibly turn our ways around. Rome was not built in one day and the one element that drives any religious faith is belief in the intangible. Believing that we can become better than we are is a great possibility as per man s faith in the most high. To do good with the intention to win God s favor is not a genuine practice of a Christian self. Committing good acts should be a quality embedded in your Christian self and it is with no expectance for our goodness that we reap a greater connection and relationship with God. This is a joint idea with the will of Easter--that we take on the death and resurrection of Christ as a pathway new selves a chance to do and look to that to help us become what we should. My emphasis in this piece is to be as human as we possibly can be take the time out and consider all that different points of our lives and not only be grateful for them but to practice the same type of compassion and giving spirit that others have practiced for us. Whether it s a man giving up his seat on the bus for a pregnant woman or a child helping a blind man cross the street it could be big or it could be small but in a true sense of goodness there is no weight on good and bad intentions for they all come from the same place the heart. Thus in creating a premeditated celebration this Easter holiday it is time for us to acknowledge the true gift of our lives and realize what it is we would like to allow ourselves to do over be it in our lives or in the lives of those around us. 16 17 Beautiful Woman By Viktor Franovik I have been so inspired by the girls I work with they have gone from cute kids to beautiful women. Such is the case with Lauren Goodman whom we met at the age of 13 when we judged the Miss Earth Florida and Miss Teen Earth Florida pageants. We were 10 judges from all walks of life photographers business men and women makeup artists stylists designers and beauty queens from other pageant systems. The pageant director walked in with her staff to go over the rules and instruct us how to ask the questions and if we deemed necessary to ask more questions to please do so--show no mercy. She wanted her delegates to become prepared young women of the world. The pageant director left and the doors intimated and others completely care free. Lauren was not and trick questions most failed because of nerves. Some thought they were going to get by on their looks and or talent alone. The second group walk in these were delegates from the Miss category--immediately I saw the winner of the Miss Division. This time the established questions were more worldly since these were the ladies to drill and talk about their platforms. Again we already knew who had won this Miss Division. The third group walked in the young Miss and Lauren were in this group. Lauren glowed her smile and hair were perfect she was poised and ready. The other girls were invisible to me my eyes were focused on Lauren. We had questions for all the ladies but most questions were directed to Lauren. The fourth and last group to walked in this was the Miss 18 Delegates. As the pageant was about to start we were moved to a private room and then escorted to our tables 2 tables of 5 across from each other. Up on stage we saw several crowns with different stone colors we knew the crowns with clear stones were for the winners. The other colors represented It was a long pageant talent was part of the ladies curriculum and some sang some recited some played an instrument and others danced. Lauren danced and was an accomplished ballet dancer--very beautiful--and danced to her own interpretation of Swan Lake. The winners were called and I was right the one I predicted won the Miss Earth division and to my amazement Lauren did not win the Miss Teen Earth title someone who did not make an initial impact won. Lauren placed with Miss Teen Earth Water and the others placed with the other elements. Meanwhile Francisco and I saw a huge potential in Lauren and her future. We met with her mother Carmen and were immediately on good terms. We took Lauren under our wing and over the next few years did photo shoots introduced her to photographers and put her in different looks and styles. We did not have to do much though--Lauren was a natural. The dance experience also helped her. The poses were massive strong and crazy beautiful. Her facial expressions were regal and demanding. Lauren was our muse and we included her in everything from editorial shoots to fashion shows. She was soon in high demand. Carmen Lauren s mom who was also business savvy took the reins of her daughter s career and ran with it. Now Lauren has shot and walked for bigger names and has been included in all the big fashion shows of Florida New York and the world. Lauren has been signed by agencies she is in such demand that she has changed from agency to agency. She has done product commercials been in Spanish soaps TV shows music videos and higher end editorials. Lauren is quite the model dancer actress (triple threat) and I am so proud that we are her godfathers in fashion. We will see wonderful things from Miss Lauren watch for her. You can also see more pictures of Lauren on our websites www.franovik.com and www.modelsanddesigners.com. Anderson Photo by Dennis Lay You will know the truth and the truth will set you my friend was emotionally and verbally abused by her mother. Every day she heard that she stupid worthless and a failure. Her mother told her that she was ugly and fat and not good enough. No man will ever want you she screamed. She grew up afraid of women and hating herself. Why can t I be different she wondered. She believed her mother s estimation of herself and lived in defeat. She grabbed attention any way and anywhere she could and by the time she was twenty-three she had three abortions on her medical record. The guilt and shame of those abortions compounded her feelings of worthlessness. But something amazing happened to her when she was twenty-four. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and became a new creation. She knew that God forgave her the moment she asked totally and completely. However Satan continued to remind her of the terrible mistakes of her past. How could I have killed my children What would my friends think if they knew the truth I can never let anyone know about my past. Some things are simply unforgivable in human eyes. She met and married a wonderful Christian man. They began their life of ministry as he became a pastor of a church in a small community. God blessed them with three wonderful children but still the shame of her past lingered. I felt so unworthy of my husband s love she said. I felt I wasn t good enough to be his wife. I never told him about my past. It was a secret that weighed me down. She went to a women s retreat and picked up a book that stuck out Your Scars are Beautiful to God. And little girl heart. She realized that is was Satan who 22 continued to taunt her with those lies and make her feel as if they were true. Then she did something that really made the enemy mad. She forgave her mother. Even though her mother had since died she forgave her as if she were standing before her that very day. She imagined Jesus erasing away all her faults especially the ones that her mother had so maliciously written on the chalkboard of her mind. All gone she said. I m set free. But there was one more step to her freedom. See as long as she kept her past a secret she would never be totally free. I prayed all day and night for the courage to tell my husband about the three abortions and I tions but me. I had to tell my husband the secret so Satan could not use it against me any longer. Finally I did it. I told him the truth. But he did not react the way I imagined he would. He held me in his arms and cried. I can t believe you have held on to this for so long alone he said. My friend went on to say I am no longer shameful. I am pure. I am no longer ugly. I am beautiful. I am no longer unlovable. I am dearly loved. She recognized the lies and rejected them. She replaced the lies with truth. She is now walking in the truth as a holy chosen dearly loved child of God. What do you think Is there some secret in your life that the enemy is holding over you Do you want to be free Often an important step to freedom after receiving God s forgiveness is telling someone and using what you have been through to help others. Then the enemy can t use it against you any longer. If you don t have a trusted friend with whom to share I would like to be that friend. Want More It s time to renew your mind and think God s thoughts rather than being held in bondage by the enemy s deceptions. blank in with smart talented gifted spiritual or any number of positive attributes. But the root source of each one of those lies is I m not good enough. It is one of the enemy s favorite weapons and he uses it to keep God s children in bondage to feelings of inferiority insecurity and inadequacy. The bottom line is the enemy wants you to believe that you are not enough. Period. But you are good enough. You are enough and have been equipped by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do everything that God has called you to do. God created man and woman and said It is good. We are so valuable to God that He gave His only Son to restore our brokenness. To be honest I could have been the poster child for the lie I m not good enough. If feeling inadequate was an Olympic event I would have been on the Corn Flakes box. See that picture above That is my kindergarten class. Now look and see who is the most insecure scared looking kid in the class I wonder if you can spot me. Insecurity was the undercurrent of my entire existence Many women are living in silent defeat comparing themselves to other women who are living in secret defeat. I m not a good mother. It s Time to Change Challenging and testing your belief systems is a very good idea by the beliefs of others. People can project their own attributes on to us and not be aware that they are talking about themselves. A good example of this is if a friend says to you that they didn t enjoy their holiday in France and wouldn t recommend going there this causes you to never attempt visiting France even if given the opportunity. We can just accept that as fact. We all have had someone tell us a story about a bad situation or trip they took. In many of those cases we ll never do that thing but occasionally we re given the opportunity to go and do the thing and our experience is completely different . It s the same about what you believe about yourself. I m not good at math. I ll never be as successful as him. These words spoken over us or situations from our past will affect us in this way. However it doesn t mean that we can t try again and do things in a different way. Try different approaches. Change your methods of approach. Trying different angles or different self-talk can change the moment or the future. Challenge yourself with different thoughts and different events to change the way you look at new situations. The Reasons The way we are raised with thoughts about money and what our parents have taught us will affect how we think about it for ourselves. Here are some things that I ve heard people say. I don t like these comments and get concerned when I can t get folks to change their self-talk That s how the other half lives. It s not for people like us. That s for the lucky ones. I should get a real job and not be so silly. 30 I m not good enough or will never be good enough. It will never happen to me. Only people with money can make money. There have been many people that have become millionaires after coming from a poverty lifestyle. They have decided to adjust their thoughts about money and became determined to change their lives for the better The Way to Change It s time to start changing the way you speak and acknowledge how you have been speaking to yourself. Don t believe everything that someone says about you. It s not true and you need to challenge those words. If you or someone else says you can t do something then change those words and beliefs and go and prove them wrong kept trying and eventually mastered the art of riding a bicycle. As children we are pretty much fearless but as voices. We must remember to say something positive every day about ourselves. Start saying I can instead of I can t. Just one more thing I would like to share with you. It s about our subconscious. As we speak negatively about others our subconscious does not know who we are speaking about. It just begins to sink deep within us. It will begin to make us feel horrible and downtrodden. We need to speak rightly. The bible says A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6 45 (NKJV) We need to speak positively. Positive thinking is not a cure all but it can take you in the right direction to a more successful life. Here s a list of things you can say to yourself every morning I am positive in spite of adversity. I believe my best days are ahead and not behind me. I choose faith over fear. When I am surrounded by pessimism I will choose optimism. I am having the best day of my life. I choose to love not hate. That readers is all a budget is a plan for where your income is spent. Following this approach and then modifying it to meet your lifestyle will it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. I think you get the idea. picture of a template I use to start others I ve worked with down the path. Here are some starting guidelines Include ALL income. Include ALL expenses--if you spend it account for it somewhere. 3. th and 30th CATEGORIES Total Income NET PAY (gross pay minus taxes) and any other income (add in monthly if it varies or only comes sometimes) EXPENSES Tithes and Offerings Planned and possibly automatic withdrawals to church and other charities. Automatic Withdrawals These are often forgotten once they are set up. What automatic payments are in place Insurances investments car loans etc. Fixed Payments Typically these bills or debt don t change in amount. Rent or mortgage car payments (if not in automatic withdrawals) minimum payments on credit cards health insurance health or other club memberships etc. Monthly Bills These may change seasonally or depending on usage. Utilities cell phones etc. Suggestion your utility and ask if they have a budget plan that estimates your total year s usage based on history and charges you a set amount every month. At the end of the year there s a true up where you pay more if you underpaid for the year or get a discount on that month s bill if you overpaid. Cash Envelopes Yes I recommend using envelopes to help you stick to your budget. I have a budget for each category as listed. When I go grocery shopping I spend from that envelope. Once you have this amount set correctly when the money is gone from an envelope you can take more from another if needed or live without it. Here s where the discipline comes in but remember it s a plan not legal limits. Your only hard limit is your income. Ledgered Accounts These are expenses you are planning for but don t necessarily spend every month. My water bill is due every other month. I budget half the normal amount each month and keep it in checking or 42 move it to savings. Same approach to saving for a new car vacation etc. The Bottom Line Balance Total income minus total expenses--you want a positive number here. If it s negative you re planning to spend more than you take in. That can only happen with debt or taking money from savings. I move this money to savings for emergencies or a rainy day YOU CAN DO THIS It takes patience and discipline but at the end of the day doing this will save you money as you see where you spend it. As for the savings you gain you re essentially paying yourself Here s my budget template numbers are only samples--there is no relationship of any value to a target amount. th and 30th of each month. PSALM 130 5 Inspired by Choice Books PSALM 126 2 45 By Jennett A. Anderson Katharine Houghton Hepburn Biography OCCUPATION Film Actress Theater Actress BIRTH DATE May 12 1907 DEATH DATE June 29 2003 EDUCATION Bryn Mawr College Biography of Katharine Hepburn Katharine Hepburn was an actress known as a spirited performer with a touch of eccentricity in films such as The African Queen and On Golden Pond. Katharine Hepburn became an unlikely Hollywood star in the 1930s with her beauty wit and the eccentric strength in which she imbued each character in a career that spanned five decades. If you always do what interests you at least one person is pleased. This was one of Katharine s favorite quotes. Katharine Houghton Hepburn was born May 12 1907 in Hartford Connecticut to Katharine Martha Houghton a suffrage activist. As a liberal-minded family the Hepburn s encouraged young Katharine to speak out sharpen her mind and engage with the world as fully as possible. The Hepburn s happy family life took a tragic turn in 1921 however when Katharine made the horrifying discovery of her older brother Tom hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom. The loss of her beloved brother completely debilitated Katharine. For years she withdrew almost entirely from those who loved her and from those all around her for a time even adopting Tom s birthday (November 8) as her own. Fortunately for film goers everywhere Katharine Hepburn overcame this huge tragedy of her childhood to become one of the most unique and enduring legends of cinema history. Over the course of six decades in Hollywood she earned twelve Academy Award nominations and won an unprecedented four Best Actress Oscars. Becoming a Star all in Itself While attending the all-women s Bryn Mawr College outside Philadelphia Pennsylvania Katharine fell in love with acting. After graduating from school in 1928 with a degree in history she spent the next several years acting on stage in and around New York appearing in productions both on and off Broadway. She got her big break in screen acting when an RKO Radio Pictures talent scout spotted her in a play and offered an audition for a role starring opposite John Barrymore in the 1932 film A Bill of Divorcement. Hepburn got the part and never looked back. A Bill of Divorcement became a hit and RKO offered Hepburn a lucrative long-term contract to make films for the studio. Hepburn won the first of her four Academy Awards just a year later for her performance in Morning Glory opposite Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Adolphe Menjou. Soon after her performance as Jo in the hit big-screen adaptation of the beloved novel Little Women won her great acclaim. Hepburn won recognition throughout the world as a formidable on-screen presence with a fierce intelligence unique among actresses of her stature. 46 Unconventional Attitude Over time though--in spite of Katharine Hepburn s huge acting talent and range--Hollywood began to question her unconventional attitude and strong personality. She refused to play the traditional off-screen role of the Hollywood starlet choosing not to wear makeup at all times give interviews or bask in the glow of media attention. When the costume department at RKO took her slacks away (because they found slacks to be uncouth and boyish) Hepburn walked around the studio in her underwear refusing to put her clothes on until she got her pants back. If you obey all the rules she said you miss all the fun. A true artist and an unlikely Hollywood star she continued to flee media attention and fame for most of her life Once a crowd chased me for an autograph. Beat it I said go sit on a tack We made you they said. Like hell you did I told them. Though she made a series of popular comedies in the late 1930s (the most notable being Bringing Up Baby in 1937 opposite Cary Grant) she also appeared in a handful of flops and producers began to label her box-office poison. Sensing trouble Hepburn ended her contract at RKO and returned to the stage. Back on Broadway Katharine appeared as Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia Story winning huge acclaim. Playwright Philip Barry had written the role specifically with Hepburn in mind critics and audiences alike went wild over the production. Hepburn bought the motion picture rights to the story and headed back to Hollywood where she sold them to MGM on the condition that she would star in the film. With this move she single handedly regenerated her film career and her mass appeal. The 1940 film starring Cary Grant and James Stewart alongside Hepburn earned multiple Academy Award nominations. Hepburn s next life-changing move was the beginning of her enduring on-screen and off-screen relationship with the actor Spencer Tracy. Woman of the Year (1942) the first of nine films the duo would make together was a huge smash. Tracy and Hepburn shared a palpable electric chemistry on and off the screen. The pair fell deeply in love while making their first film together their relationship lasted 27 years even though Tracy was already married and refused to divorce his estranged wife. Hepburn s and Tracy s unwed romance had its ups and downs but Hepburn put her career on hold for five years beginning in 1962 to nurse Tracy through the illness that would ultimately take his life in 1967 just days after the pair completed their last film together Guess Who s Coming to Dinner. Hepburn won another Oscar for her role in the film but always viewed it more as the Academy s tribute to her lost love. Hepburn s Best Actress award for Guess Who s Coming to Dinner had plenty of company in her trophy case. Over the course of her long and prolific career she made dozens of films and garnered a stunning twelve Academy Award nominations winning four. Her credits include many of the most celebrated pictures of all time The Philadelphia Story (1940) The African Queen (1951) Long Day s Journey into Night (1962) Guess Who s Coming to Dinner (1967) The Lion in Winter (1968) and On Golden Pond (1981). She stole the stage from all the leading men of her age Spencer Tracy of course but also Cary Grant James Stewart Humphrey Bogart Charlton Heston and Laurence Olivier to name a few. In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her the top American screen legend of all time. In the 1990s Katharine Hepburn developed a progressive neurological disease but this did not keep her from keeping up an active lifestyle in her Connecticut hometown and even from acting in select roles. Her last Hollywood film credit came in 1994--more than 60 years after she made her memorable debut in A Bill of Divorcement. Katherine Hepburn died on June 29 2003 at the age of 96 in the same house in which she had grown up. Life is hard she once said. After all it kills you. Katharine Hepburn is a legend. I grew up loving this woman. My all-time favorite movies by Hepburn are On Golden Pond and Little Women. 47 Spring Time Lunch Desserts By Ashley Newkirk In the springtime it seems almost a crime not to make a dessert using fresh fruits and ingredients. It s the season where everything is starting to grow and blossom from owers to berries.
