ASU enters the 2013 season with a 13th ranked freshman class 16 nationally televised moments from 2012 Making the NCAA Tournament Provo Utah Nov. 30 2012 top five ASU faced Oklahoma in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament eventually falling 3-2 after a 13-15 heart-breaking fifth set. Four Sun Devils finished the match in double-digit kills and capped the year breaking three single-season records. Upsetting No. 5 Washington Seattle Wash. Nov. 21 2012 Led by 19 kills from Macey Gardner and 46 assists from Allison Palmer ASU pulled the upset in four sets 25-19 16-25 25-23 25-20. Upsetting No. 6 USC Tempe Ariz. Nov. 2 2012 matches on the schedule and national volleyball team experience in the summer by three athletes and assistant coach Linda HamptonKeith. Fans will get to watch 13 home matches in 2013 as another strong roster vies for a postseason run. The Sun Devils made quick work of the Trojans sweeping them 3-0 for the fourth time in series history. It marked the first Top 25 win since 2010 and was the eighth of nine sweeps in 2013. In 2012 we posted an APR score of 978 and in the summer of 2013 we improved that score with a single year score of 1000 (100%). Here she is after a match. On TV With THE PAC-12 NETWORK heads into Year Two 90 matches are scheduled to be broadcast live on the Conference s Networks 15 are Arizona State s - six of which will be played at home in Wells Fargo Arena. Both matches against our rival Arizona will be aired on TV representing 10 As the Pac-12 Network our Pac-12 opener on Sept. 24 in Tempe and our final regular season match of the year on Nov. 29 in Tucson. Seven conference teams earned NCAA Tournament bids in 2012. We made our first appearance since 2006 and played close to home at the BYU site. A lot of our fans traveled and it s a DYK Volleyball is one of 10 sports that every school in the Pac-12 sponsors goal to make it back to the postseason in 2013 to give our fans extended time in the Fall to watch us play The Pac-12 Network did a great feature on The 12 Best Women s Volleyball Games of 2012 with your Sun Devils earning three of those nods. Ringing in at No. 11 was our Nov. 23 win over Arizona that secured our spot in the NCAA Tournament. No. 10 on the countdown list was a sweep of sixth-ranked USC on Nov. 2. All the way up at No. 7 was a five-set thrilling win at California on Oct. 28. Named the head coach of sand volleyball in June of 2013 the first in program history. Watson s 2013 2012 and 2010 recruiting class ranked in the Top-25 nationally. In 2012 the Sun Devil squad opened with an 11-2 record the best start in program history since 1992 when the Sun Devils advanced to a program-best NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Since 2012 Watson has grabbed seven wins against ranked opponents in his five years at ASU. ASU s 2012 squad made the programs 16th appearance in the NCAA tournament and Watson is the fifth coach from ASU to guide the Sun Devils to a NCAA postseason berth. Watson s 20 wins in 2012 is the most in a single season at ASU most for the program since 1993. The nine conference wins is the most under Watson and most since 2000 for the program. At BYU he compiled a 74-18 (.804) overall record while leading them to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. In only his first season as head coach he was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 25-4 record the program s best record since 1998. Prior to his head-coaching debut at BYU in 2005 Watson had amassed 11 years as an assistant coach at four universities. Watson coached for two years under his former coach Carl McGown before beginning his career in women s volleyball with extremely successful stints at Kansas State Arkansas State Montana State and BYU. Graduated from BYU in 1995 with a degree in physical education and sports business management after leaving his native home of Homebush Australia. He and his wife Larissa have three children two sons and a daughter. 17 Associate Head Coach Hired February 9 2011 Joined the Sun Devils in February of 2011 as an assistant coach. LINDA HAMPTON-KEITH Before joining ASU she brought in nine years of experience with the USA Volleyball Development Program nine years of experience at the NCAA Division I level and three years experience as a head coach of a varsity program at the high school level. An active member of the AVCA as a representative of the Minority Coaches and Assistant Coaches committees. Has published two articles for AVCA Magazine and been a featured speaker at AVCA conventions. Coached at TCU from 2005-10 and was named recruiting coordinator in 2010 for the program while also assisting the club to three consecutive 20 win seasons and a school record 27 wins in 2009. Assisted TCU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009 which included a first-round 3-0 victory over Rice to advance to the second round. Coached and developed four All-Americans four All-Region West and seven Mountain West All-Conference student-athletes with the Horned Frogs. Is a 2008 Graduate of the NCAA Women s Coaches Academy and 2010 NCAA WCA Dimension 2. Prior to her collegiate coaching career Hampton-Keith was the head coach at P.K. Yonge High School in Gainesville Fla. Led P.K. Yonge to three-consecutive Florida Final Four appearances and the first State Championship title in school history. Coached and developed 10 All-State selections including the Florida State Player of the Year two Volleyball Magazine National Fab 50 and guiding four players who went on to play at the Division I level. Named 2000 Dairy Farmers Class 2A State of Florida High School Coach of the Year. 2004 graduate of Florida International University where she earned a bachelor of science in psychology. She and her husband Maark reside in Chandler Ariz. 18 Assistant Coach SAMMI STUART Hired August 7 2008 Joined the Sun Devil coaching staff in 2008 as an Assistant Coach. Responsibilities include ASU s Game Day Management Liaison ASU s Pac-12 Video Coordinator Assists Head Coach in Opponent Scouting Reports Sun Devil Club Liaison Video and Statistics Coordinator and works with the Liberos Defense and Passing. Before her arrival to ASU Stuart held the position of Director of Volleyball Operations at Brigham Young University where her role encompassed all aspects of the programs video and statistical programs. Recipient of the Governor s Scholarship Stuart continued her education at Utah State University receiving a bachelor s degree in exercise science in 2006. Played basketball for the Aggies from 2003-05 and was given the team s Off-Season Conditioning Award following the 2004 season. Native of Woodruff Utah she attended Rich High School where she graduated with an Associate s Degree through concurrent enrollment. State Runner up in 2007 2012-2009 Club Red Director 2012-2008 Club Red Head Coach 17s team earned Bronze medal at the Open Division of USAV Junior Nationals finishing 1st in 18s Division of the Fiesta Classic and the Open Division of the Colorado Crossroads Qualifier finished 2nd in the Open Division of Reno Far Western Qualifier and won the Arizona Region Open Division Championship. Club Red 16 Mizuno won the Open Division of Fiesta Classic won the Open Division of Colorado Crossroads won the Open Division of the Southern California Qualifier won the AZ Open division and was ranking 1 in the country for most of the year finishing 5th at the Junior Nationals (JO s). 2009-2008 Club Red 16s won the Region 16s Championship won the Silver Medal at the Reno Far Western National Qualifier and finished 17th at the Open Nationals (JO s) in Miami. 15s Roxy Beach Club won Open Division Bronze medal at USAV Junior Nationals (JO s) 18s Boys Saddleback Valley Club won the Open Division Bronze medal at USAV Junior National Served as an Assistant Coach for the men s team at UC Irvine for four years after playing for the Anteaters Played at UC Irvine as the starting Outside Hitter for the Anteaters from 1988-92. 20 Dir. of Operations Hired August 5 2013 JACQUELYN SCARDUZIO Will serve as the program s first Director of Operations and assistant sand coach. Brings nine years of coaching experience in USA Volleyball seven years at the Division I High School level two as an assistant and five as the head varsity coach at Saint Mary s Catholic High School in Phoenix where she also taught mathematics for five years. A graduate of Arizona State University. After earning a full academic scholarship she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BAE in secondary education with a mathematics specialization. Team Manager WHITNEY PERKINS First season as the team manager was in 2011. Assists with game film and travel logistics. A junior status undergraduate student at ASU. High School Was named Gatorade Arizona Volleyball Player of the Year for 2011 along with AVCA Under Armour All-American Second Team honors. Played club volleyball for Club Red based in Phoenix under coaches James Felton and Jaston Watson. Was a three-time First Team All-State selection her sophomore through senior season. BREELLE BAILEY High School As a senior from LHS Bailey put up 201 kills (4.6 s) and threw down 31 service aces in her final campaign one that backed up an All-Region 7 MVP season during her junior year. Faced off against 2013 recruit McKenzie Willey in the Utah State Semifinals. Played for high school coach Jamie Ingersoll and for the club team Club Utah. Personal Daughter of Thurl and Sindi Bailey has two brothers Brendan and Bryson. No stranger to college athletics in her family Bailey s father was a member of North Carolina State s 1983 NCAA basketball championship and had a 12-year NBA career. 23 24 MB 6-3 So. MERCEDES BINNS 2012 (Freshman) Played in 18 matches with six starts. Hit a match high seven kills in the non-conference slate against Colgate and Florida Atlantic. Averaged 0.54 blocks per set throughout the season. Had 33 kills and 21 total blocks on the year. High School 2011 graduate of South Pasadena High School. Played for head coach Jessica Barreto. Was named First Team All Rio-Hondo League in 2009 and 2010. Played club volleyball for Club West based out of Rancho Cucamunga Calif. for coach Kurt Arron. Sand VB JORDY CHECKAL 2014 Will play with the sand volleyball program. 2012 (Freshman) Did not play. 2011 (RS-Freshman) Redshirt freshman. High School A 2011 graduate of Point Loma High School in San Diego Calif. Was a four-time letter winner for the Pointers under co-head coaches Mike Placek and Davis Kansen. Played setter and libero positions Checkal was all-league team MVP and captain for four years. Also played varsity soccer her freshman year. Made the honor roll twice and was named the Union Tribune All-Academic Athlete her senior year (2011). Personal Full name is Jordan Lyn Checkal. Parents are Brian and Michelle Checkal of San Diego Calif. Has one brother Dillon. Born Feb. 20 1993 in San Diego Calif. Majoring in exploratory. 25 8 OH 6-2 So. WHITNEY FOLLETTE 2013 (Sophomore) Member of Canada s Team Alberta that will compete in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale in July. 2012 (Freshman) Recorded a match-high 16 kils against Utah also improving her best marks in points 18. Posted eight block assists at Colorado. Against Cal Follette swung at a .727 clip while also tallying eight kills. Got her first career start in the season-opener against Idaho State on Aug. 24. Finished the season second on the club in blocks with a total of 104 and had 213 kills fifth most on the team. Personal An exploratory major. Full name is Whitney Elise Follette her parents are Willie and Maureen Follette. Has one brother Matthew and one sister Mary. Cousin Jordan Parkin plays volleyball at Mount Royal University in Calgary Alberta. Trophy Case 2013 Member of Team Alberta that competed in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale Fla. 26 14 L 5-10 Sr. CAITLYN FRANCIS 2012 (Junior) Had 13 starts in 33 matches while averaging 1.43 digs per set. Tallied a career best 15 digs at No. 5 Washington in the Sun Devils second upset of the season of a ranked opponent. Also against the Huskies put up one service ace. Finished the season with 164 digs and seven assists. Named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team. 2011 (Sophomore) Began career at ASU playing in 66 sets for the Devils. Recorded eight service aces for the devils averaging 0.12 per set. Also contributed 112 digs the sixth most on the squad. Season-high of 13 digs came on Sept. 25 against Washington. Was the only Sun Devil to earn First Team honors on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team. 2007 (Freshman at California) Played in 77 sets as a freshman helping the team with 153 digs and 18 service aces. Also contributed 17 assists and 19.0 points. Competed in the Final Four match against Penn State. Personal A double major in family and human development and psychology in The Barrett Honors College. Full name is Caitlyn Noelle Francis recently married to Ross Francis - her maiden name is Murphy. Originally from Roseville Calif. where her family resides. Her mother and stepfather are Victoria and Jim. Her father and stepmother are Thomas and Heidi. Has two brothers Thomas and Robert and four sisters Elizabeth Jillian Jennifer and Madelyn. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law are Tamara and Bruce. After her first year at UC Berkeley she served a full-time Spanish speaking mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Iowa. Posted her first career double-double against Idaho State with 50 assists and 13 digs. Finished the season tied for a team best 10 double-doubles with fellow freshman Macey Gardner her final double-double coming in the NCAA Tournament against Oklahoma with 52 assists and 12 digs. At the end of the season Palmer reset both the ASU single-season assist record and the freshman assist record with 1482 assists. Preach was named to an all-tournament team for consecutive weeks this time for the UCI LMU Dual Classic. The junior posted 27 assists and 118 digs (4.92 set) over the weekend including a then season-best 27 digs at Loyola Marymount. Closed out the tournament portion of the schedule being named to ASU s Sheraton Invitational All-Tournament Team after tallying 62 digs and 11 assists during ASU s 4-0 weekend. Had a season best 30 digs at No. 5 USC and nine assists against Colgate. Prior to the start of the 2012 season had 841 career digs and has rolled to 1460 to rank fourth all-time at ASU. Her season dig mark of 619 ranks fourth in single-season digs. Is one of just 16 Sun Devil volleyball players to surpass 1 000 digs in their career. Hit .667 at Oregon State to post her third double-double (12 kills 10 digs) with zero attack errors. Her fourth and final double-double of the season come on 11 kills and 12 digs against Utah. Started 28 matches in 34 appearances. Finished the season third on the team in kills 242 and had 18 service aces to add to her offensive threat. Rewrote her match high in digs with 19 in the upset of No. 5 Washington. Tallied 86 block assists on the year and was third in total blocks (90) for an average of 0.70 per set. 2011 (Freshman) Had an outstanding freshman season becoming a consistent starter.
