CUMMINGS GATES What s New Around Estero s concrete mixers continue their work on Culver s restaurant along Corkscrew Road those seeking a frozen treat can grab their own Concrete Mixer at the new Culver s location in Gulf Coast Town Center. Rooted in Wisconsin this burger and frozen custard eatery is moving into Southwest Florida fast opening five locations in the region within the last few months. Those from the Midwest may be familiar with the home of the ButterBurger. Mike Derynda and Mark DuQuette owners of the Gulf Coast location have been waiting for the successful chain to come to the Sunshine State for a long time. DuQuette grew up with Culver s in Michigan and previously managed the Estero Verizon store before joining Derynda in opening Culver s. There are so many people from the Midwest down here he says. Mike and I always joked about doing a Culver s here. I think people will go crazy over it. Where else can you get fried Wisconsin cheese curds instead of fries The ButterBurger is made from a neverfrozen beef patty served on a lightly buttered and toasted bun topped to order. Finish off the meal with a custard treat to get the full Culver s experience. Culver s is quickly getting acclimated to the community A partnering with the Florida Everblades Kids Club and tapping into the employee pool provided by its proximity to Florida Gulf Coast University. Derynda also owns three Culver s restaurants in Wisconsin but hopes to make Southwest Florida his fulltime home as the weather is much nicer this time of year We have been trying to get Culver s to come down here the last three years he says content to see the vision come to fruition. Fellow Wisconsin native Mike Bresson also believes Culver s will be a success in Southwest Florida. He is opening the Culver s in Estero in April at 10300 Arcos Ave. near the new Goodwill Store. Wisconsin premium ice cream and cooked-to-order burgers set Culver s apart from other fast food eateries he says. Along with ButterBurgers the menu also includes chicken and roast beef sandwiches North Atlantic Cod Filet Grilled Rueben Melt and Pork Tenderloin. Two other eateries have also opened recently at Gulf Coast Town Center. Burger 21 offers Certified Angus Beef burgers and gourmet dogs with unique toppings. The TexMex Haystack gains some height with its stack of fried onion strings along with applewood-smoked bacon Gouda and guacamole. 16 FEBRUARY 2014 ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM Culver s Owners Mark DuQuette & Mike Derynda (Gulf Coast Town Center) and Dale Schaechterle & Mike Bresson (Estero) Burger 21 also offers chicken veggie and seafood burgers. The Ahi Tuna burger stars sushi-grade ahi tuna topped with pickled cucumber avocado Sriracha caramel soy lettuce and tomato all on a sesame bun. Top off the experience with a hand-dipped shake float or sundae. House of Brewz is sure to draw lovers of craft beer. It offers 150 drafts and 100 bottled beers along with its own microbrewery. Bury Me Brewing Co. features a technologically advanced three-barrel microbrewery and a brewmaster trained in all aspects of the industry. A short jaunt down the road from Gulf Coast Town Center the Alico Family Golf Center opened in January offering entertainment and skills advancement for the whole family. The area is ripe with activity. Kids and adults alike are learning the fundamentals of golf. The 30-acre site just west of I-75 also features a full driving range and mini golf course. With a clubhouse restaurant and party rooms Alico Family Golf Center is sure to be a popular place for gathering. South of Estero The Promenade is seeing more activity in preparation for its anchor tenant to open near the end of March. DeRomo s Gourmet Market and Restaurant will consume 18 000 square feet of the revitalized shopping plaza offering an old-world style marketplace. The restaurant will serve authentic Italian dishes just like owner Francis Cuomo grew up eating in the Bronx as part of a large Italian family living near both sets of grandparents in the real Little Italy. Cuomo s mother Rose Ann will help run the bakery offering up homemade pies and cakes. DeRomo s marketplace also will include a fresh deli butcher shop seafood counter pastaria wine seller and gourmet coffee and gelato shop. The buzz is building as construction nears completion. Other stores that have opened recently in The Promenade include several clothing retailers and specialty boutiques. Enchanted Ballroom has livened up the area offering ballroom dancing lessons group classes and dance parties. ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2014 17 18 FEBRUARY 2014 ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM Art thou ready It s festival season in Southwest Florida By Laura J. Cummings Gates ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM JANUARY 2014 21 Photo by robert heier Feature Festival season is upon us in Southwest Florida saturating the local landscape in style. and art shows across the globe as well as lining the walls of the Embassy Suites Hotel of Kennesaw Ga. He once kept a pace of about 20 shows a year so he knows what he s talking about when he says the Bonita Springs National Art Festival ranks among the best in the nation. The first year I went to the show my jaw dropped Heier says. It was an amazing show. I ve never seen some of the stuff Barry has in that show. I m very honored to be a part of that cadre of folks. This month s festival marks the 30th national juried art show in Bonita Springs. We v e always focused on the highest quality we can get Witt says. We are the original festival. We re the festival that made the others come to town. The three Bonita Springs festivals are expected to bring in more than 100 000 for the Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs with a new venue at Riverside Park. Anne DeLaCroix is another Estero artist who will be participating in the March show. She also did the Estero Fine Art Show at Miromar Outlets in January. DeLaCroix uses recycled natural materials to create whimsical aquatic art. I make fish wall art out of palm seed pods fronds palmetto leaves and all kinds of weird stuff I find she explains. Coconut Point Art Festival or two days at a time art festivals pop up inviting the community to appreciate and explore through multiple mediums. They offer an escape from the ordinary and a foray into the art world without the pretentiousness of visiting a gallery. At an art festival you can walk up and meet the artist who created the work and feel very comfortable says Barry Witt longtime organizer of the Bonita Springs National Art Festivals. It s a good experience. You start with an empty park or street and for two days it becomes a major major event. If you come back on Monday it s gone. National and international talent floods the scene along with local artists who earn their place at the top of the art arena. Estero artist Robert Heier will showcase his unique style of photography at the Coconut Point Art Festival and the Naples National Art Festival this month along with the Bonita Springs National Art Festival in March. He calls his style fauxtography because the end product is barely recognizable as a photograph. Many visitors to his booth seem mesmerized wondering exactly what they are looking at he says. The original romantic images from Europe and around the world become edgy and contemporary bursting with highly saturated color to create a piece of modern art. I take the original image and blow it to smithereens and then put it back together Heier explains. It s a very soulful thing. It s uplifting when you get something that you think is beautiful. Heier s work has been featured in publications galleries F 22 FEBRUARY 2014 ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM UPCOMING ART FESTIVALS IN & AROUND ART FEST FORT MYERS FEB 1-2 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Downtown Fort Myers At ArtFest you ll find high-quality made-in-the-USA original art by more than 200 artists. CUMMINGS GATES 2014 I n 2013 the local real estate market was starting to simmer and 2014 looks to be even hotter. It s cooking and we need to watch it closely because it s about to boil says Stephanie Miller a commercial real estate broker with Select Real Estate. She and other local realtors are feeling positive about Estero s future in both the commercial and Stephanie Miller residential real estate sectors. New home construction is up inventory is down and prices are steadily rising. Things seem to be getting on all cylinders now says Denis Noah attorney with Henderson Franklin specializing in commercial and residential real estate development. We ve seen a lot of the residential glut eliminated. Housing prices are up and it appears a lot of the retail space is being filled in. I think office space is still lagging somewhat but I expect over the next year or so that it will improve dramatically. In the residential market today s buyers are confident having seen a steady recovery. They aren t getting the rockbottom prices of 2011 but there are still opportunities. People know now the market has made its move and this is going to be the last opportunity to get a bargain says Joe Pavich Sr. broker owner of Realty World. While low inventory is driving prices up banks are reticent keeping prices in check with conservative appraisals he adds. Inventory is low right now for listings and days on the market are down drastically Pavich says. It s a buyer s market if you have cash and can close quick. The rental market is still hot as people who lost their homes work to repair their credit. However more people are shifting their mindsets back to homeownership says Pavich. We re starting to see the young families come out now which short-saled or lost their homes six or seven years ago he explains. Now their credit is repaired and they re looking to buy. New construction is ramping up to record levels especially east of I-75 where many developers purchased land Denis Noah Joe Pavich Sr. 24 FEBRUARY 2014 ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM at bargain prices when the market crashed. New construction projects especially in Estero are popping up everywhere says Kevin Yankow real estate broker with Key Real Estate. Communities that began in 2005-2006 are selling out while new communities are Kevin Yankow either getting started or experiencing record sales. Most projects with development orders in place for 2014 have been cleared and are ready for construction. I think we ll see even more new communities in 2015. The Hertz relocation is expected to further drive demand as about 700 new jobs come to Estero in the spring of 2015. Some Hertz executives have already relocated although most are choosing Naples the location of Hertz s temporary headquarters. Higher income executives with children seem to be gravitating toward Collier County says Pavich pointing to a possible explanation. It seems newcomers to the area are confused about Lee County s school choice system. Local realtors can t tell new residents where their children will go to school because Lee County has a lottery system so neighborhood schools aren t guaranteed. Pavich and Yankow both expect more Hertz employees to move into Estero closer to the 2015 opening of the new headquarters at U.S. 41 and Williams Road. We re 15 minutes to some of the nation s best beaches 10 minutes from RSW (international airport) and in the middle of some of Southwest Florida s best shopping dining and entertainment Yankow says. Red Sox fans can be at Jet Blue Park in 15 minutes and my alma mater FGCU put the unofficial name for Estero Dunk City on the map. Even major corporations want to be in Estero Off-season sales were stellar compared to recent years he adds. As we climb out of the depressed market we are seeing a staggering number of buyers who ve been waiting on the sidelines for signs of a real estate recovery Yankow says. Those signs were visible toward the beginning of last season and throughout this off season. Record number of buyers are purchasing properties and entering the market. An extended season this year should also help residential sales with winter storms up North driving snowbirds down early and a late Easter to keep them here longer. Interest rates flood insurance and new home construction prices are all predicted to steadily rise making 2014 an excellent time to buy local brokers say. The real estate market is always comprised of peaks and valleys and everyone can agree we are climbing out of a valley says Yankow. We ve seen an average increase of five-to-six percent in home values over the past year and should anticipate steady growth over the next few years. Pavich says he sees a trend in buyers who are interested in modest resort-style amenities with lower association fees rather than golf course communities. Local builders are picking up on this trend. Shifts are also being made in commercial real estate focusing less on office space and more on residential development. This next year will likely usher in positive land use changes after careful planning efforts which will encourage the framing of a future City of Estero -- the epicenter of Southwest Florida Miller says. Consequently pricing must move upward with desirability which is attracting investors and residents to our area from all over the globe. It is my wish that these happy circumstances will open our hearts to those who are less fortunate so that we also continue to be a giving community which is the facet of Estero I love the most.
