LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2014 9 from the publisher february 2014 Thanks for the love I am so grateful for the thousands of emails calls and neighbors stopping me on the street with well wishes. They include readers and advertising partners alike. On a daily basis everyone expresses how they continue to call Lifestyle their only hometown magazine. Some of the best compliments were how we were there during the challenging times and how we support local organizations and events. Others commented on how we prefer featuring local residents who have a positive impact on our community often putting them on the cover in favor of celebrities with no local connections. Still others pointed to the Scene Pages including one who said I read from the back. The most frequent and gratifying remark was Only Lifestyle sits on my coffee table The most interesting comment happened when I was on a flight to South America. A fellow passenger said she knew who I was because her family and friends always bring Lifestyle with them when they travel to their homeland. I am humbled and gratified by how our readers have embraced Lifestyle for more than 10 years. This past year these remarks were confirmed by an independent research firm. On a monthly basis nine out of 10 people read the Lifestyle magazine over any other publication. Eight out of 10 have purchased something from a Lifestyle advertiser within the last 12 months and close to four people per household read Lifestyle. The most eye-opening statistic was that 15 percent of Lifestyle readers earn 1 million a year or more There are even more affirmations about our model versus other publications so I want to thank you for making Lifestyle your preferred publication. Keeping with our philosophy this month we feature residents who have made a difference as a couple. These neighbors have businesses and support local charities to make a difference in our community. I trust you will be as intrigued to learn about their love stories and the passion for what they do together. In closing I wish you a very Happy Valentine s Day As always enjoy the Lifestyle. Prolexic is following the law firms of Greenspoon Marder and Becker & Poliakoff in moving offices downtown. Prolexic which fends off attacks on websites is taking 35 000-square-feet of space at 200 E. Las Olas. Prolexic plans to not only bring 120 existing jobs but also add up to 118 new jobs at an average salary of 100 000 the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance says. The law firm of Kopelowitz Ostrow Ferguson Weiselberg Keechl will be the anchor tenant in One West Las Olas the 35 000-square-foot boutique office building. The building is planned to have a rooftop bar and 1 500-square-foot of ground floor retail. Managing partner Jeffrey Ostrow is also involved in bringing the Tilted Kilt a high-end sports bar to the former Laughing Matters site next door. The office vacancy rate downtown has dropped five percentage points to 16.8 percent since peaking in early 2013 CBRE reports. Kenneth Krasnow CBRE s managing director in South Florida says rents are rising but the prospects for a new major office project are hindered by a lack of quality sites along Las Olas Boulevard. --Kevin Gale Drink mead eat turkey legs watch Shakespeare in the mud and cheer on your favorite knight at the Florida Renaissance Festival which opens February 8 and runs for six themed weekends. South Florida locations are getting a new look and returning to their roots of a laid back California establishment. For example the remodeled Sawgrass and Fort Lauderdale locations have reclaimed wood to give a West Coast vibe. California Pizza Kitchen s rebranding adds a West Coast feel to its South Florida locales The Fort Lauderdale location has a new bar and lounge area too. New food and cocktail menu items have been added including a spicy fennel sausage and poblano flatbread wild mushroom pizza with white truffle oil and California Roots a tasty and refreshing cocktail made with Svedka vodka fresh avocado and mint. Literally. The pair joined their passion and background in fashion to open up Trendy Truck a one of a kind full service boutique on wheels. The Florida natives wanted the freedom of being able to take their store to where ever the action was and that is exactly what they do. While Sydney lives in Fort Lauderdale and Brenda lives in Coral Springs (where the truck sleeps in a warehouse) they will (and do) cruise to just about anywhere beckoned in South Florida. They drive to homes for sip-and-shop parties and for business-tobusiness events. Some companies use them for employee lunch hour perks in which employers buy gift cards for the truck which then pops up for staff shopping. They also do fundraisers where a percentage of sales is donated to charities. A few places where the truck has recently shown up Betti Stradling Park in Coral Springs Downtown Open Market in Boca and Fat Village Flagler Art Walk in Fort Lauderdale. Their motto Have truck will travel When we met the ladies were dressed to impress but the real star of the show was the truck. On the outside it s a baby blue 1974 Chevy Step Van (a former army fire truck). On the inside it s a high-end shop complete with dressing room and all the drool-worthy threads and accessories a gal could ever want. I took my eyes off the big rig just long enough to get the inside scoop on South Florida fashion from these wheel n deal entrepreneurs. Here s what the traveling duo have to say about the latest trends they re peddling. Are there any trends you re obsessed with this season S Leather. I am really obsessed. It may get out of control. B Leather. Growing up in the 80s I loved leather and still do. I even have vintage leather skirts from then LOL. Now you can get fun pieces in vegan leather which is affordable for everyone. Oh yes and animal prints love them. Which fad will you never give in to S The stiletto nails. I know they are really in right now and all the celebrities have them. Sometimes I even think I want them but I just can t do it. B That s a hard one I guess I m going to have to go with the beanie. I just can t master this look. I ve tried and each time my husband asks What s up with the hat Bad hair day What s your favorite item in the truck right now S It s a navy blue snakeskin patterned slip dress from L.A.based designer Knot Sisters. It is perfect to throw a sweater over (or maybe with some boots if it gets cold enough) and wear for a night out. B Grey button sweater from Gypsy Junkies it s oversized and really cozy but just right for Florida Decembers. What is the most worn thing in your closet S We recently got in this red sweater with a side zipper from Knot Sisters and I have literally been wearing it with everything. It is perfect over a dress with leggings or jean shorts... I have pretty much tried it all. B No question the Axel shirt by Gypsy Junkies perfect with everything Share your number one fashion tip. S Don t dress for anyone else. Wear what makes you happy. B What ever you wear should make you feel great in it. Confidence is the best fashion accessory. Best way to look cool even when it s crazy hot outside S Sunglasses The bigger the better B I bought Evian spray water to refresh all day long along with our M blotting papers. LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2014 25 business High-Tech Future TechGateway co-chairs Chris Malter (CEO of IMC) and David Coddington (VP of Business Development at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance) Creating a High Tech Ecosystem Can South Florida Become a National High-Tech Hub The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Thinks So. By J.P. Faber T here is a high-tech buzz in the South Florida air these days. In Miami it s very loud where scores of small hightech startups are testing international markets and where the Knight Foundation is backing global high-tech incubator Endeavor with a 5 million grant. Southern Palm Beach is also active with its Technology Business Incubator in Boca Raton and the South Florida Technology Alliance in Delray Beach. Broward however may be where the muscle comes from as South Florida strives to create a high-tech eco-system. Broward is where the largest high-tech companies are located something which the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance is trying to leverage in cooperation with its sister economic development agencies in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. The alliance techgateway initiative is to market south florida as a high-tech location. Miami as a hub is an incubator [with companies] that might get some start up funds says Chris Malter a cochair of the Alliance s TechGateway initiative. But there is a big difference between that and relocating a major company here. That will bring in millions of dollars. Eighteen months ago the Alliance launched the TechGateway initiative to market South Florida as a hightech location leveraging the fact that many large high-tech companies are in South Florida and continue to expand. Without these South Florida won t be a serious contender. An entrepreneur may have a great idea but without access to Motorola or Ultimate Software or IBM it s going to be a hard road bringing it to market says Malter. Broward as well as nearby Boca Raton has had a long history as a hightech campus with a large presence of companies like Motorola IBM Google and Citrix. Most people don t know that the first IBM PC was built on their Boca campus or that the first smart phone was developed [in Broward] by Motorola and Bellsouth working with IBM says David Coddington Alliance VP for Business Development and another co-chair of TechGateway along with Nova Southeastern president Ray Ferraro. The technology industry is a huge component of our economy here. Even when Motorola s Plantation division unleashed layoffs in 2008 the net result wasn t all bad by dumping scores of skilled engineers into the workforce it provided the raw material for large tech companies and new startups. There is a legacy of tech talent here says Coddington. Collectively we have some real muscle. In the last year the Alliance used that muscle to increase the corporate base. Some of the companies that expanded here included iCare MotionPoint SmartWater CSI Sunrise Micro Devices e-Builder and Citrix which is expanding by 200 jobs. Miami is making the most noise with everything going on down there says Rob Strandberg head of the Economic Development Corporation the nonprofit behind Boca s Technology Business Incubator. But Broward s got a much larger concentration of corporations which is the backbone for startups. 26 FEBRUARY 2014 LMGFL.COM Photo by Andrew Urban E D U C AT I O N CHARACTER LEADERSHIP The world needs artists who perform heart surgery and judges who write poetry. Her ability to command attention in a large gathering or small setting is uncanny. She is witty with a very sharp mentality don t let her catch you off guard What other couple do you admire most John and Ann Betar of Connecticut who have been married for 81 years. When asked how to have a long successful marriage John said Don t hold a grudge. Forgive each other. Live accordingly. Biggest challenge as a couple Separating our personal lives from work. Because we work together our date nights frequently become business meetings. We are slowly learning how to enjoy things and discuss topics other than medicine. Favorite South Florida romantic restaurant Steak 954 at the W hotel. The atmosphere is romantic but easy going and the food is superb. What celebrity couple are you most like Just the other day Tiffany was watching a few reruns of Friends and mentioned how much Chandler reminded her of me. Likewise Tiffany is similar to Monica in the sense that she is very tidy and quite competitive but loves her husband and family above all else. Also Monica and Chandler kept their relationship a secret much like we did Best advice to another couple to stay happy An open line of communication is the key. It was a decision she has never regretted even during a moment of concern when the 9 11 terrorist attack occurred one month later. I didn t think about giving up and moving back says Martin. We don t give up. I love this country. We re very thankful for the opportunities we ve had here. Those opportunities have proven fruitful for the energetic and vivacious Martin who arrived with perfect timing--just as the Internet was blossoming into a major business tool. Now a U.S. citizen and proud of it she didn t just bring her entire family with her to a foreign country. She also brought along a company she had founded three years earlier Optime Consulting designed to hold the hands of Fortune 500 clients looking to reach international markets online. Optime Consulting today is a privately held high-tech marketing consulting group with annual revenues of 7 million 100 employees and offices in the United States Brazil Mexico Colombia Venezuela and Spain. Acting as a sort of middleman between high-tech companies and international customers Optime counts such blue chip companies as Hewlett Packard Citrix Microsoft and Motorola as clients. Among other services Optime designs and executes multilingual customer loyalty programs online marketing strategies and social media campaigns. One of Optime s clients is Avaya the 5 billion business telecommunications company. Over the last 10 years of working together Avaya s vice president of marketing Roberto Ricossa has watched Optime grow to include a virtual Babylon of international linguists who speak English Spanish Portugese and French. He says their companies have grown together. We developed the program together. I don t consider them a vendor or supplier I consider them a partner. They don t just copy what other agencies do. They have such creativity--and passion for helping their customers to achieve their goals. Martin downplays her considerable career preferring to focus on good health family and charitable works. She intertwines all three with her business whenever she can. Staying fit is a passion of Martin s which is obvious to anyone who meets the trim perfectly-groomed 48-year-old. She says she is motivated to maintain good health by her parents experience. Her father who lives in Venezuela is blind due to diabetes and has other ailments. When I see my parents I see they don t take care of themselves she says. In order to get old with quality of life you have to take care of yourself. My dream is to enjoy life with my kids and grandkids. To spread the gospel of good health to others-- and also help the community she has grown to love as well as celebrate 15 years in business-- Martin held a 5K run in September at Markham Park in Sunrise. With sponsorships from Whole Foods Offerdahl s Midtown Athletic Club and others the race raised 15 000 for the Make-aWish Foundation. Optime hopes to make it an annual event. When Martin first approached certain sponsors about the race they were skeptical. Don t think of having more than 400 participants in your first race they told me she says. But with her marketing prowess and Fortune 500 company contacts Martin knew she could do better. And she was right More than 1 000 people jogged ran and walked that day. Martin lives in the city where Optime is based nicknamed Westonzuela because of the large influx of Venezuelans there--so much so that she sometimes bumps into people she knew back home. She lives with her husband Guillermo Palm who runs a computer and network security company called Odveloper and their two children Andrea 20 a student at Notre Dame University and Michelle 13 a student at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. When she misses her homeland Martin knows where to turn--the local gas station which houses a PANNA Caf Express where Martin can grab an empanada or desgre ado and for a few minutes feel like she s back in Caracas. 40 FEBRUARY 2014 LMGFL.COM RICK CASE VOLKSWAGEN World s Largest VW Dealership Makes German Engineering Affordable. As you enter a darkened interior you are greeted with aromas that make you salivate before you even sit down. Both the tables and the long bar are made of deep lustrous wood with comfortable stools and booths that are reminiscent of a local bar in Chicago Boston or New York. Big Time Restaurant Group the money and management behind such great restaurants as Rocco s Tacos and City Cellar Wine Bar & Grill made a smart move when they put Executive Chef Louie Bossi in charge three years ago. He re-defined the menu and started off with what he calls a DoIt-Yourself kitchen buying everything you possibly can from local farms and producers. When a fresh hog comes in from Palmetto Creek Farms Chef Bossi has chefs from the area drop in to watch how he breaks it down from snout to tail. This very skill and his infectious passion for meat is what earned him the nickname The Hogfather. The Hogfather shows his skill in the artisan house-made charcuterie which is made to entice everyone s palate with the pickled vegetables fresh-sliced salami and pork belly and grana padano cheese all paired with parmesan focaccia slices. Fresh is definitely the word with this restaurant in both the amount of thought put into the pairing of flavors and the fact that everything is made in-house from the baked goods to the sausages or brought in fresh like the fish that is speared not line-caught. Then came the main entr es of seafood and poultry. The Maryland A Patio seating at Big City Tavern Maryland jumbo crabcake jumbo lump crabcake is pan-seared making the edges slightly crispy which enhances a slightly salty taste that really brings out the essence of the crab when paired with the dill-lime tartar sauce a deep savory flavor. The chicken Milanese looks wonderful with a firm and perfect golden brown breading on an arugula and greens salad with mozzarella burrata Heirloom tomatoes and topped a balsamic fig vingarette. The charm of Big City Tavern does not stop at the food. It has a selection of cocktails that is sure to captivate both your taste and sight. The Las Olas Lemonade is served in a jar with lots of mint leaves giving it a bittersweet taste and pairs especially well with the mahi mahi that flakes apart with ease. Chef Bossi makes sure to rotate the menu with the season so there promises to be something new to try along with old favorites. Between the comfortable atmosphere and the rich tastes from both the kitchen and bar Big City Tavern will become a regular haunt for you. We definitely look forward to seeing what Chef Bossi and Big City Tavern will do next. Wendy was obviously excited about seeing me. Thank you for fitting me in. I spend over 80 minutes with each new patient so I have to limit the number of new patients I see each week otherwise there wouldn t be any time to take care of my established patients. Dr. Woliner I understand completely. I just want to get better. Tell me more. Ever since high school I ve been on one diet or another. Up until the last five years or so I was always able to drop 20-30 pounds no problem . But But I d always gain it back and now even when I starve myself I can t lose an ounce Yo-yo dieting messes up your metabolism. 65% of the weight lost is just water and muscle . Not only do crash dieters lose their hair get gallstones and gain their weight back within a year they increase their cortisol levels so much that makes it hard to ever lose weight again . I continued So what diets have you done What haven t I done you mean Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig of course. Diet clinics prescribed appetite suppressants laxatives and diuretics . I even did over a dozen of the fad diets that are touted in Women s World Weekly. Sprinkling Sensa on my food hCG shots and diet cookies you buy from the kiosk at the mall. I hate to admit it but I m one of the ones that fell for that Kimkins scam. Heidi Diaz a.k.a. Kimberly Drake had a lot of people fooled with her after pictures which were lifted of off Russian Bride websites . The trick all these diets use is that starvation itself causes a lack of appetite . SNATT is what they call it. Slightly Nauseous All The Time. Nausea was only part of my troubles. At 37 my periods stopped early and my GYN is convinced that all these fad diets had something to do with it. My heart even started skipping a beat my doc said QTsomething ... Prolonged QT interval. That s serious some people have died from that . Ironically the most dangerous time is when you start eating again after prolonged dieting. Dr. Woliner I m through with all those pill-mill diet clinics. So many of them wouldn t let me use my drug plan instead they forced me to buy overpriced drugs right from their office. I m coming here because I know how important it is to see a board-certified doctor one that still goes to the hospital in case I need you. I finished my exam. In addition to measuring your metabolic rate I also want to send a note to your primary care physician to coordinate care. Wendy s metabolic rate was minus 16% indicative of a slow metabolism . Blood tests confirmed CENTRAL HYPOTHYROIDISM (suppressed TSH) INSULIN RESISTANCE (elevated HOMA-IR) and ADRENAL FATIGUE (high cortisol) . I then prescribed a comprehensive plan of behavior changes diet modification exercise supplements and even some medications . Three months later she came back to check her progress. Dr. Woliner I m no longer shedding hair in the shower but better yet the scale is starting to move. Just this last month I lost another six pounds DR.
