Bates MD. According to an article posted on WebMD he was an ophthalmologist who wrote Perfect Sight Without Glasses. Bates felt so strongly that wearing eyeglasses over the long term made vision worse that he kept an anvil in his office to smash patients lenses on it. He called his idea the Bates Method. It promoted relaxation as the solution to poor vision. Still used today techniques include palming or covering your eyes with your hands sitting in the sun or in front of a lamp with your eyes closed doing eye exercises swaying and looking for certain colors. Though today s professionals believe Bates method may have went too far too fast we continue to look for natural ways to fix vision. Recent eye health research has linked diet and nutrition with a decreased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In fact oral supplementation with the AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS) formulation (antioxidant vitamins C and E beta carotene and zinc) has been shown to reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD. Observational data suggest that increased dietary intake of lutein plus zeaxanthin (carotenoids) omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] plus eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]) or both might further reduce this risk. In addition Dr. Gerald Cysewski chief scientific officer at Cyanotech Corp. in Hawaii noted that natural astaxanthin can cross both the blood brain and blood retinal barriers and is a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. A large scale (100 to 200 patients) quantifying eye health in elderly people ( 60 years old) taking natural astaxanthin for a period of 6 to 12 months yielded positive results. In my article on vision health on page 32 other natural product manufacturers talk T about the latest offerings ingredients and lifestyle adjustments that address vision concerns. And for the customers who spend hours in front of digital devices and computers the American Optometric Association offers some simple steps to take to minimize eyestrain--that does not involve smashing eyeglasses Workplace Adjustments Position the top of your computer monitor below eye level so you look slightly downward when viewing the screen. This will help minimize strain on the eyes and the neck. If you are typing from copy position the text at the same level as the screen. Adjust the screen brightness so it is most comfortable for you. Avoid glare on the computer screen by adjusting window curtains or blinds repositioning the monitor or using a glare reduction filter. Proper Lighting Examine the lighting in your work area. Overhead lights can be harsh and often are brighter than necessary. Consider turning some of the lights off for a more comfortable lighting situation. Use an adjustable shaded lamp to provide specific task lighting as needed. Rest Breaks Throughout the day give your eyes a chance to rest. Take several minutes every hour to look away from the computer and allow your eyes to re-adjust. Consider standing up and walking around or doing alternate tasks that do not require extensive near focusing. Blink often to refresh the eyes and use artificial tear solutions if necessary. Posture When seated at a desk make sure your feet are flat on the floor. Use a chair that is adjustable and provides adequate support for your back. When working at a computer your arms should form a 90-degree angle at the elbows and your hands should be tilted up slightly to allow your fingers to travel freely over the keyboard. B Y D R . A B B A S Q U TA B hen it comes to controversial subjects misinterpretation and misrepresentation of the facts is commonplace--ultimately this results in a misled and confused consumer. This has been quite the case when it comes to the subject of the clinical importance of CBD (cannabidiol) phytocannabinoids and cannabis. Phytocannabinoids and cannabis have been used in medicine through the ages with accounts of its use dating back more than 5 000 years. Recorded medical literature on the therapeutic potential of cannabis began in the mid-1800s when it was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia and soon became a major active ingredient in medicines offered then. To date there are well over 20 000 published studies in scientific and medical databases that elucidate the pharmacology and benefits of cannabis and its phytocannabinoids. Essentially the overwhelming majority of scientific literature tells us a very different story than what has been disseminated by the government and law enforcement agencies--cannabis and its active constituents (phytocannabinoids) are important to our health and in the treatment of many diseases. Yes in health and disease Clinical research has led us to a better understanding of the therapeutic value of phytocannabinoids as well as their ability to treat a variety of disease conditions and to help maintain balance homeostasis in the body. Yet a review of the history and legal treatment of cannabis places it as one of the most misrepresented clinically relevant herbs in our history. While a multitude of prescription drugs have been and continue to be responsible for major side effects and deaths the way cannabis and phytocannabinoids have been banned continues to befuddle scientific and medical communities at large. Cannabis has been used for ages as a medicinal herb for pain and its naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds are proving to be of tremendous therapeutic value for numerous medical conditions. W Unfortunately cannabis (and its clinically relevant cannabinoids) is still classified as a Schedule 1 drug such as heroin which further categorizes the plant as having no medical value. With no scientific basis to justify its classification this categorization flies in the face of numerous published studies extolling its safety and medical relevance. Certainly the studies would be in the thousands but being categorized as a Schedule 1 drug prevents institutions from further studies. ischemic insults such as stroke and trauma or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease Parkinson s disease and HIV dementia. The patent also states that cannabinoids are useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of a wide variety of oxidation associated diseases such as ischemia age related inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. This is the same government that has kept cannabis hostage as a drug with no medical value. In addition published studies on phytocannabinoids demonstrate powerful therapeutic effects as potential anticancer agents and furthers their role as neuro-protective natural agents. Scientific investigation and clinical application continues to support the important role that these phytocannabinoids play in the human body and one of the main focuses is on their role in pain and pain conditions. Phytocannabinoids & Pain Pain is a fact of modern life and represents a serious public health issue of enormous proportions. We have accomplished a lot over the past few decades to better understand the mechanism of commonly seen in pain syndromes the site of action of analgesics and the numerous options available to manage chronic pain. In spite of these achievements the knowledge is not universal to all and confusing to some which places the patient at a disadvantage. It is of no surprise that medical models of pain management have failed to produce a reliable effective and safe treatment--especially for chronic pain. For clinicians difficult and stubborn pain treatment options are poor with opioid drugs being the only but poor option. Opioid drugs (codeine morphine oxycodone propoxyphene and tramadol) are problematic and cause many physiological and psychological complications including dependence tolerance issues toxic side effects respiratory and cardiovascular complications to name a few. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 Now that legalization is on its way across the country the opportunity to unravel and unveil the benefits of cannabis and its active cannabinoids is at hand. To date we have significant data to support the role that cannabis cannabinoids in multiple sclerosis arthritis anxiety inflammatory bowel disease Alzheimer s ALS Tourette s syndrome epilepsy pain conditions osteoporosis and diabetes to name a few. Interestingly while the U.S. government continues to treat cannabis as a dangerous herb with no medical value a U.S. Patent (6 630 507) was issued to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants which states that cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants for example in limiting neurological damage following 8 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com cvc for info about this advertiser TRENDINGNOW On a more encouraging not cannabis and its phytocannabinoids have been used successfully as an analgesic for thousands of years. Over the past few decades hundreds of studies demonstrate the effectiveness of these compounds on patients experiencing chronic pain including intractable cancer pain and neuropathic pain that is difficult to treat. In addition it appears that our body s endocannabinoid system is intimately involved in addressing inflammatory conditions and in the prevention and treatment of inflammationmediated pain. The activity of the body s cannabinoids and several of the phytocannabinoids found in cannabis have profound effects on pain signaling to the brain as well as the inflammatory cycle associated with chronic pain conditions. The perception of pain all begins when pain signals travel along nerve fibers (nerve cells called neurons) to the brain. The spinal cord is a sophisticated array of nerve fibers that transmit many different signals to and from the brain. Special pain receptors called nociceptors get activated and fire off a response whenever a pain stimulus is applied to the body. The signaling of pain is specifically carried via chemicals called neurotransmitters that travel through neurons to transmit pain. Essentially neuropathic pain arises when neurons in the brain or peripheral nervous system become hyper-sensitized and generate abnormal or prolonged pain impulses. There are millions of patients who suffer from neuropathic pain found in diabetic neuropathy neuralgia conditions fibromyalgia multiple sclerosis cancer and others. We now know that several areas of the brain that process pain respond very favorably to the analgesic effects of phytocannabinoids. There is evidence that both phytocannabinoids and the endogenous cannabinoids produced in the body exert influence on opioid receptors useful in pain modulation and functional role in pain management. While the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies reported that 100 million Americans live with chronic pain the vast majority being those living with specifically back pain. Besides the many applications of CBD it has been shown to be very good at calming over-excited nerves and may also contribute to pain modulation through an anti-inflammatory mechanism. Lastly studies have revealed the link between cannabinoids and their effects on 10 VITAMIN RETAILER chronic back pain and other related ailments. Pain Signaling Schematic taken from Curr Neuropharmacol. 2006 Jul 4(3) 239 257. A Cannabinoid receptors are present in the pain pathway from the peripheral tissue and spinal cord. B CB1 receptors are distributed in areas of the brain involved in nociceptive pain perception. C The highest abundance of spinal CB1 receptors. D CB1 receptors are also present in the peripheral sensory nerve endings and both CB1 and CB2 receptors have been detected in cells participating in inflammatory processes. that CBD may be useful in reducing damage caused by intervertebral disc degeneration via its effects on inflammatory processes involved. The role of cannabis and its cannabinoids in cancer extends far beyond its ability to control nausea during chemotherapy or improve appetite. In animal and in-vitro studies CBD and other cannabinoids promote apoptosis (enhances the death of the cancer cell) and starves cancer cells by influencing angiogenesis. Cannabinoids have also been found to increase the expression of the intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) as part of the mechanism in fighting the invasiveness and spread of certain types of cancer cells and several important studies demonstrate further support to the concept that cannabinoids both alone and in combination with each other possess anticancer properties. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 Phytocannabinoids and Other Clinical Applications Some of the oldest claims for cannabis have come from Indian medicine for its use in anxiety and insomnia conditions. Current research supports the use of cannabidiol in post-traumatic stress disorders and generalized anxiety states. In studies with multiple sclerosis patients CBD also was shown to help in a variety of ways including motor coordination pain and quality of sleep. With respect to neurological issues again neuropathic pain studies are positive in terms of CBD use and benefits. In addition many studies have provided additional support for its use in epilepsy. Popularized by the Dr. Sanjay Ghupta CNN specials CBD dramatically improves the quality of life in children suffering from Dravet s syndrome--going from 300 seizures per week to about one a week. Comprised of a team of cardiovascular experts researchers and nutritionists the council will serve in an advisory role and complement the coalition s efforts to educate consumers about the benefits efficacy and safety of the specific omega-3s eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Specifically the council will provide independent scientific insights and perspectives regarding omega-3 claims for cardiovascular health guide research on the connection between omega-3s and cardiovascular health and broadly serve as advocates to peers and consumers for incorporating more EPA and DHA in the diet. The Omega-3 Coalition is governed by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) an association representing EPA and DHA omega-3 industry interests. Decades of research and thousands of studies support the heart-healthy benefits of EPA and DHA omega-3s yet many consumers still don t have the information they need about the effectiveness and best sources of these important fatty acids said Adam Ismail executive director of GOED. We are excited to bring together such prominent health and nutrition professionals to help turn the tide toward greater omega-3 awareness and consumption to support overall cardiovascular health. According to national data sources more than 75 percent of American diets are deficient in omega-3s. While the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 and other heart-health advocacy groups recommend eating eight ounces of fish (or two 4-oz. portions) preferably fatty fish per week the average intake among Americans is just 3.5-oz. weekly. People who do not consume the recommended amounts of fatty fish should consider taking an omega-3 supplement or enhancing their diet with products fortified with EPA and DHA omega-3s such as milk eggs and bread. Echinacea Preparation as Effective as Tamiflu in Early Flu Cases ew clinical research suggests that an herbal medicinal product containing a proprietary combination of a concentrated echinacea herb and root extract is as effective as the conventional antiviral medicine oseltamivir (Tamiflu) in the early treatment of influenza. The results of the randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial were published online in April in the open-access journal Current Therapeutic Research. For the study researchers recruited 473 patients who had exhibited flu symptoms for less than 48 hours from 29 primary care practices in the Czech Republic. The patients were randomly assigned to take Echinaforce Hotdrink syrup a beverage containing an alcoholic extract prepared from freshly harvested echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) herb and root (95 percent herb 5 percent root) supplemented with European elderberry (Sambucus nigra) for 10 days or oseltamivir for five days followed by placebo for five days. (Echinaforce Hotdrink is produced N and marketed by A. Vogel Bioforce AG of Roggwil Switzerland. It is not currently sold in the United States.) The primary endpoint of the clinical trial was the percentage of patients with mild or no symptoms after one five and 10 days of treatment. At each time point the researchers found that a similar number of patients had recovered in both groups. Statistical analyses revealed that the two treatments were in fact non-inferior to each other that is they were approximately equal in their therapeutic effects. When the researchers looked at a subgroup of patients with laboratoryconfirmed influenza (as opposed to those with a clinical flu diagnosis) recovery rates still did not vary between the two actives. Finally there was a trend toward a higher proportion of recovered patients after 10 days of treatment with Echinaforce Hotdrink. This is yet another significant human clinical trial that helps to document the clinical benefits of this specific Swiss echinacea extract said Mark Blumenthal founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council a leading nonprofit research and education organization. The size of this trial--473 patients--is one of the largest echinacea clinical trials ever published added Blumenthal who noted that the largest echinacea clinical trial in the scientific literature--with 755 subjects--was conducted with the same Echinaforce extract and showed a preventive effect against respiratory tract infections. Things slow down a bit so we can all look back and put things in perspective right Inside the Beltway not so much. If 2014 was known for political gridlock 2015 much like all of us following a traffic jam is all about making up for lost time. Before we recap all the happenings of the first part of 2015 let s not forget that this summer specifically in August at the Iowa State Fair will be when all the political horses will come storming out of the gates for the 2016 presidential race. How that race will affect activities in all three branches of government remains to be seen. The conventional wisdom is that it will put a chill on activities especially out of the Executive Branch White House as they try to help their party appeal to small businesses and voters aligned with such interests. However if we look back at the start of 2015 things may not always appear as they actually are. There was much anticipation of 2015 being somewhat quiet due to the make-up of both the House and Senate. And then February hit and we were all quickly becoming experts on DNA bar coding via the New York Attorney General Eric Schniederman and the New York Times. A further primer on bad ideas which can come from places other than Washington D.C. The bar coding discussion set off a chain reaction which saw some in the House and Senate receive letters from various attorneys general letters to the Food and Drug Administration on DNA testing amongst other topics and a continuous deluge of media stories questioning the integrity of the industry. But then after a few months things appeared to calm and it was back to business as usual. We [NPA] held our fly-in day for more 150 in the industry the largest turnout in years and the reception was very positive toward the industry. Crisis averted No just the eye of the hurricane. With authorization bills looming 18 VITAMIN RETAILER While NPA is very supportive of third-party verification certification for dietary supplements (per our recent partnership with UL and our own history of the first third-party program for cGMPs in the industry) third-party cGMPs are not mandatory at present and requiring them on military installations will only increase prices to soldiers and limit access to products that are already compliant with federal laws for public health and safety. and Congress back to regular order the opportunity for possible threats to dietary supplements was present but not in clear view until June. June saw three unique amendments proposed to the National Defense Authorization Act that would affect the industry from Senators Blumenthal and Durbin two of the industry s staunchest critics. The challenges with the amendments were that they Failed to recognize that the FDA already has full regulatory authority over dietary supplements in the United States and that includes our military bases failed to state how our soliders privacy will be upheld as when disclosing any protected health information (PHI) including all supplement use to the Military Health System (MHS) and lastly would ve required a third-party certification for all products sold on military installations. While NPA is very supportive of third-party verification certification for dietary supplements (per our recent partnership with UL and our own history of the first third-party program for cGMPs in the industry) third-party cGMPs are not mandatory at present and requiring them on military installations will only increase prices to soldiers and limit access to products that are already compliant with federal laws for public health and safety. So with those amendments NPA mobilized and in addition to discussing the issues with those in congress based on our relationships we also activated the grassroots by the www.saveoursupplements.org site. The net result was that after 20 000 plus emails from NPA and tens of thousands from other advocacy groups the amendments were not part of the bill that passed Congress. So time for a few summer days off right Not so fast. In the process we learned that more challenges will be coming likely in a reworked version of Sen. Durbin s dietary supplement labeling act that was offered in 2013. We have no way of knowing what will be offered but we do know that we have to be ready for whatever challenges may come. Like the song says It s a cruel summer leaving us here on our own. No one wants a cruel summer so please check back with NPA and the saveoursupplements.org site for updates and for more information on how to get involved. Dr. Eduardo Villamor and team discovered that students deficient in vitamin B12 were at 2.4 times greater risk of repeating a grade and had 1.9 times more absences than those who were not deficient. Vitamin B12 is necessary for adequate brain development said Villamor associate professor of epidemiology. Deficiency very early in life or in old age has been linked to cognitive and behavioral problems but it was not known whether it could be related to academic difficulties during school age. Grade repetition and school absenteeism are important outcomes because they predict school dropout and impair children s options for educational advancement and development. As part of the Bogot School Children Cohort a longitudinal investigation of nutrition and health in school children the researchers took blood samples from 3 156 students ages 5 to 12 from public primary schools. They measured ferritin hemoglobin mean corpuscular volume zinc vitamin A folate and vitamin B-12. They found that 15 percent of school children had marginally deficient vitamin B12 status and another 2 percent were deficient. The overall risk of grade repetition was 4.9 percent and the absenteeism rate was 3.8 days per child over a year of observation. Of all micronutrients studied only vitamin B12 had an impact on grade repetition. Villamor said solutions would be fairly simple but would first need to be tested in randomized interventions. Vitamin B12 could be included into fortification formulas added to commonly consumed foods in countries where these programs are in place he said. Inclusion of foods that are rich in vitamin B12 into school feeding programs is another possibility. Identifying children who are vitamin B12deficient and providing supplements is yet another option but again it should be first tested in experimental studies. Study Links Exposure to Common Pesticide With ADHD in Boys new study led by researchers at Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center links a commonly used household pesticide with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and young teens. The study found an association between pyrethroid pesticide exposure and ADHD particularly in terms of hyperactivity and impulsivity rather than inattentiveness. The association was also stronger in boys than in girls. Given the growing use of pyrethroid pesticides and the perception that they may represent a safe alternative our findings may be of considerable public health importance said Tanya Froehlich MD a developmental pediatrician at Cincinnati Children s and the study s corresponding author. Due to concerns about adverse health consequences the United States Environmental Protection Agency banned the two most commonly used organophosphate (organic compounds containing phosphorus) pesticides from residential use in 2000-2001. The ban led to the increased use of pyrethroid pesticides which are now the most commonly used pesticides for residential pest control and public health purposes. They also are used increasingly in agriculture. Pyrethroids have often been con- A sidered a safer choice because they are not as acutely toxic as the banned organophosphates. Animal studies on the other hand suggested a heightened vulnerability to the effects of pyrethroid exposure on hyperactivity impulsivity and abnormalities in the dopamine system in male mice. Dopamine is a neurochemical in the brain thought to be involved in many activities including those that govern ADHD. The researchers studied data on 687 children between the ages of 8 and 15. The data came from the 2000-2001 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) which is a nationally representative sample of the United States population designed to collect information about health. The 2000-2001 cycle of NHANES was the only cycle of the study that included a diagnostic interview of children s ADHD symptoms and pyrethroid pesticide biomarkers. Pesticide exposure measurements were collected in a random sample of the urine of half the 8- to 11-year-olds and a third of the 12- to 15-year-olds. ADHD was determined by meeting criteria on the Diagnosic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) a diagnostic instrument that assesses 34 common psychiatric diagnoses of children and adolescents or by caregiver report of a prior diagnosis. The DISC is administered by an interviewer. Boys with detectable urinary 3PBA a biomarker of exposure to pyrethroids were three times as likely to have ADHD compared with those without detectable 3-PBA. Hyperactivity and impulsivity increased by 50 percent for every 10fold increase in 3-PBA levels in boys. Biomarkers were not associated with increased odds of ADHD diagnosis or symptoms in girls. Our study assessed pyrethroid exposure using 3-PBA concentrations in a single urine sample said Froehlich. Given that pyrethroids are non-persistent and rapidly metabolized measurements over time would provide a more accurate assessment of typical exposure and are recommended in future studies before we can say definitively whether our results have public health ramifications. By Terry Lemerond iring and keeping good employees is a key to any successful business but it s especially important in the natural health retail business. The best way to compete with the likes of Walmart and Amazon is by offering outstanding customer service. And that starts with having a group of employees that are customer-focused and passionate about what they do. That means investing time and money in hiring and training the best people possible. The payoff is huge. Unfortunately with retail it can be hard to find and keep bright people who can help your business thrive. According to the Hay Group a management consulting firm the turnover rate for part-time retail employees is more than 60 percent. That s a lot of people moving on. And the cost is high. Experts estimate that it can cost 3 000 to 4 000 to replace an hourly employee. Those costs don t include the hit your business can take if you lose someone that your customers loved. It makes sense to do everything you can to keep the people you hire. The best way to do H that is to hire and train them right. You and your customers can reap the rewards. Before you decide to hire someone new for your store think about what you want that employee to do in the store. What will their responsibilities be Are there any gaps in your current employees skills or abilities What characteristics will ensure that the person hired will fit in with the existing or desired culture at your store I ve found that by having a good idea about what you really want from your new hire goes a long way to finding just the person you need. Once you ve determined what you want you need to find the who. For our industry it s important to use your existing network of customers and current employees to find your next employee. If you ve developed relationships with your customers it s likely that you know who might be a good fit as an employee. Who asks smart questions to learn about your products Who s passionate about natural health Who always makes you smile If you have someone in mind ask that person to apply for the job. That s how we ve hired some of our best people at Terry Naturally the health food store we own in Green Bay WI. Also ask customers and employees for recommendations when you have an opening. They may know someone such as a niece or family friend who might become a long-standing valued employee. Of course you can also post a sign in the store include the opening in your newsletter on your Facebook page and website or post an ad on Craigslist. Keep the resumes you receive on file for six months to a year to give yourself a head start with any new openings. Before you start interviewing candidates develop a set of questions that you can use for all your interviews. Include a mix of questions about the person s skills experience and personality. Once you re conducting interviews use these tips to help you find the right person Ask open-ended questions. You want to get your candidates talking so ask them questions such as What were WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 22 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com dynamicenzymes for info about this advertiser RETAILFUNDAMENTALS your responsibilities at your last job instead of Do you know how to run a cash register Get them to tell you about their actual performance. It s easier to evaluate based on how they handled situations that actually happened than asking them to explain how they would handle some hypothetical situation. Instead of asking How would you handle a difficult customer Ask them for an example of what they ve done in the past Tell me about a time you had a difficult customer. How did you handle it Let silence be your friend. After someone answers a question you might want to quickly move on to the next question. But staying quiet may make them fill the silence and reveal more about themselves. The silence will also allow you to take notes. Listen for personality. Don t be put off if they re a little nervous in the interview. That s natural. But make sure that they can interact well with other people. What are their hobbies Are they involved in activities like group sports or volunteering Do they like people Are they friendly patient and flexible They re going to be working with customers who are sharing health information. Are they discreet Do they empathize with other people Give them a chance to ask questions. Someone interested in your business will have questions. You want to hire those people. So be sure to ask them if they have any questions for you and answer them in an honest and compassionate way. Once you ve interviewed your top candidates it s time to make decisions. Be sure to bring an objective mind to this process. Think of the characteristics you want in a new employee and hire based on those. If you have trouble deciding it s okay to bring your top candidates in for another round of interviews. You can ask a trusted member of your team to sit in on the second round and provide another viewpoint. Check references and make your selection. If your offer is accepted send letters or emails to the other people you interviewed to let them know that you ve made your selection. It s difficult but they ll appreciate the courtesy. After you ve hired the right person training is critical. In fact inadequate training is consistently one of the top reasons given for employee turnover and it s especially critical for a natural health retailer. Our sector is burdened 24 VITAMIN RETAILER by regulations that your employees must know. Plus knowledge is essential to helping customers maintain their health. Your new employee will need knowledge of nutrients botanicals physiology and much more to be an effective member of your team. It can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to training. If you re like me and believe knowledge is crucial to your business then the first thing you need to do is pay your employees--new and old--for time spent on the clock to learn and develop their skills. At our store we use lots of vendor resources to help bring our new employees up to speed. Because I m passionate about education I ve also made retail training a focus at EuroPharma the dietary supplement company that produces Terry Naturally products. We provide lots of resources for retailers to help meet their training needs including regular training sessions to educate retailers on our products through our Terry Naturally Certified Product Specialist program. Of course you can also find plenty of thirdparty webinars and other resources online about health topics and natural remedies. Naturally you ll also want to provide general hard skills (like running the register and filling shelves) and soft skills (like greeting customers and suggestive selling) training to your new hire. At the store we ve found that learning the ropes is easier when a new employee shadows an experienced employee for a while. This helps the new employee learn about the store and helps your other employees build their skills and share their enthusiasm. It will also help build relationships within your team to create that family environment that is so important to the success of many natural health stores. Hold regular team meetings to share information. You could assign one person each meeting to share some key points on a topic important to your store--maybe it s an interesting trend or a new clinical study on one of your top products. This will also help them build their presentation skills so they re more comfortable talking to customers. You can feature industry newsletters and magazines in your meeting and then leave them in the break room and encourage your team to read them. Another great way to educate your team is to give them substantial discounts on products. You don t want them to just sell the products. You want them to believe in them. Personal experience with products will help your team sell them. Having your team talk about products they love will make a deep and lasting impression on your customers. To hold onto your new employees-- and old ones--it s important to show you care about them and respect them. Be patient with your new employees. With the complexity of this business it s going to take them time to catch on. Be present and attentive when they ask questions. Tell them when they ve done something well and use specific examples in your praise. Say I love how you listened to that customer and asked questions to find out what they needed instead of Great job with that customer. Listen to their ideas. Their fresh perspective can offer you new insight into your business and it will tell them you value their contribution. I can tell you that my employees are like family to me and they re a major factor in my success. If you treat your employees well and invest in your hiring process and their development they will be more committed to their jobs and will provide the outstanding service your customers deserve. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com essentialformulas for info about this advertiser Linking vitamin C with immune support and thinking of immune-support during cold flu season is a start but consumers should consider integrative supplement tools to bolster immune function all year long. By Lisa Schofield s we know the immune system and the various biochemicals comprised within work tirelessly to achieve and maintain homeostasis but can be vulnerable at any time and in any environment. All types of stressors--physical mental and emotional--can demand the immune system to work harder which at times leaves the body more vulnerable to developing acute or chronic issues. Immune challenges can hit at any time not just during cold and flu season said John Holladay product management director at North Carolina-based Gaia Herbs. The one thing we can count on is that we can never plan or expect a weakened immune system. Therefore it s always wise to ensure your customers have a rapid relief immune product on hand-- especially when travelling for summer vacation or during back-to-school. In agreement is David Winston RH(AHG) founder and president Herbalist & Alchemist in New Jersey who pointed out simply that one s A immune system works all year long every second. Your customers he asserted should be reminded to not wait for allergy season or cold and flu season to get the immune system in balance because it s less effective that way. Immune health should be an ongoing consideration. In addition consumers should also remember that the immune system is not isolated it affects and may be affected by other parts of the body. Christopher Hobbs PhD LAc director of herbal science at California-based Rainbow Light explained The immune system is closely connected to all systems of the body weakened immune health affects vitality energy sleep digestion and mental function. Conversely our mood emotions and sleep have a significant effect on immune readiness to fight infections. So although many of us focus on immunity primarily during cold and flu season it s a good idea to care for immune health year round. While it is a good practice for your customers to support immune response during allergy and cold flu seasons Gina Rivers Contla national science educator Host Defense Organic Mushrooms in Washington elaborated that the human immune system is complex and multifaceted and there are several different mechanisms working together to create a healthy immune response. Ramona Billingslea marketing manager with Betsy s Health Foods in Texas noted that because the store serves an area where people tend to be in cold and flu season or allergy season almost year round her customers usually are thinking about immune support. The challenge for us is to make them understand how supplements like probiotics and mushrooms may play a role in their overall health and not just a seasonal concern she related. That said Billingslea has seen an increased consumer interest for mushroom products and probiotics tend to be strong sellers for immune support in part because the media has made them so popular for the general public. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 26 VITAMIN RETAILER When customers come into the store asking for a probiotic we love the opportunity to educate them on how to read the probiotic label like what CFU stands for and how a supplemental probiotic can be more beneficial than a serving of yogurt packed with sugar. Individual Herbs for Immune Specific Support ere are some herbs that have been traditionally used to support the immune system courtesy of Gaia Herb s John Holladay. Andrographis In traditional Chinese medicine andrographis is used to clear heat from the blood. A randomized double-blind study on 152 patients with pharyngotonsilitis found 6 g per day of andrographis for a week to be as effective as paracetamol in providing relief of fever and sore throat. Black Elderberry This herb has an extensive history for use in the early stages of seasonal immune challenges. High in flavonoidrich compounds this herb exerts antioxidant protection on cells to aid in protecting cellular health from free radical damage and airborne elements. Black Pepper (supercritical extract) Black pepper enhances the absorption of turmeric s most powerful compound curcumin which supports a healthy inflammatory response. Echinacea angustifolia One of the most widely used and storied medicinal plants in North American history Echinacea angustifolia supports the removal of cellular waste while maintaining healthy uptake of nutrition at the cellular level. Echinacea purpurea This widely used herb is the most efficacious when it has been tested for Alkylamides or Polysaccharides. The alkylamides support a healthy inflammatory response in the sinuses when taken at the onset. Ginger Ginger has long been used as a diffusive circulatory tonic and warming agent to calm occasional nausea and aid in a healthy immune respiratory response. Turmeric This culinary spice has traditionally been used to support healthy digestion promote cardiovascular health and support the immune system. Many researchers agree that the basic mechanism of action within turmeric is its potent antioxidant action as curcuminoids seem to scavenge for damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. Christopher Hobbs with Rainbow Light said There are several herbs with good research supporting immune health benefits. Elderberry may exert anti-influenza action (slows viral replication). Elderberry extract was studied in five small clinical trials two of them randomized double-blind and placebo-controlled (RDBPC). In one RDBPC study symptoms of influenza A and B were relieved about four days earlier and stronger medications had to be used significantly less often than by people taking a placebo (ZakayRones et al 2004). In another study 93.3 percent of those taking the elderberry product had significant improvement of symptoms within two days including fever compared with 91.7 percent within six days. Complete cure was seen within two to three days in almost 90 percent of the elderberry group H Product Considerations Supplement manufacturers continue to improve and expand upon their immune-support products creating a healthy dose for stores shelves. Rainbow Light offers Certified Immuno-Build Mushrooms that Hobbs noted provides the combined strength of the five most-studied mushrooms-- trametes shiitake maitake reishi and cordyceps--to aid in boosting immunity at the cellular level. As part of the Rainbow Light Certified line ImmunoBuild Mushrooms is made with USAsourced certified organic mushrooms that the company said have been uniquely steam-processed to alter the indigestible cell wall of the mushrooms said to be the most effective way to release the immune-supporting beta-glucans contained within. Rainbow Light s Counter Attack is described as a potent stimulant-free formula for what Hobbs called seasonal distress. Counter Attack reportedly does not cause drowsiness anxiety jitters stomach upset or over-drying side effects and is intended for use at the first sign of discomfort. The company said its Counter Attack provides potent support to mobilize the body s acute response with clinically proven nutrients and botanicals including vitamin C and zinc berberine andrographis and oregano oil plus a Clear Relief Complex of botanicals to ease sinus and respiratory discomfort. Counter Attack is said to be safe for children 10 years and older. Rainbow Light Hobbs pointed out is a distributor line which means there is no minimum order when retailers order from their favorite distributors. Host Defense said Cantla grows and processes certified organic mushroom supplements that support a wide variety of body systems and healthy functioning. The company offers a complex mushroom blend Stamets 7 as a maintenance formula much like other core regimen supplements she described. Stamets 7 is a synergistic blend of seven mushrooms that support nearly JULY 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM but took six days in the placebo group (p 0.001) (Zakay-Rones et al 1995). Andrographis is another herb that Hobbs said is extremely popular throughout Southeast Asia China and India for addressing fevers and viral infections. Andrographis and elderberry are possibly the two most scientifically studied and supported herbal remedies for flu he pointed out. In one study (Chuthaputti 2007) after day four of the herbs the group of volunteers treated with acetaminophen and andrographis extract had significantly lower symptoms of cough fatigue and other symptoms than the group receiving just acetaminophen. Berberine sulfate is shown in many studies to have broad-spectrum antibiotic activity helping to prevent secondary bacterial infections subsequent to upper respiratory tract viral infection. Berberine sulfate is one of the most important Chinese herbs for preventing many kinds of infections (Scazzocchio et al 2001) Hobbs said. Berberine interferes with adherence of group A strep by two mechanisms--by dissolving lipoteichoic acidfibronectin complexes and by releasing the adhesin lipoteichoic acid from the strep cell surface (Sun et al 1988). Although vitamin C and zinc are not herbs they are worthwhile supplements for supporting immune function pointed out Michele McRae BS CN senior director of research Formulation and Quality at Rainbow Light Santa Cruz CA. Cellular levels of vitamin C become significantly depleted with daily stress and especially during times when infection exists in the body she said. Without adequate quantities of vitamin C the immune response of white blood cells may become compromised. This can result in a lesser production of antibodies and a diminished immune response. There is some evidence vitamin C might have other effects in patients with the common cold. Vitamin C might protect normal tissues against reactive oxygen species that are produced by phagocytes during a viral infection. It might also enhance the proliferative responses of T-lymphocytes she explained. Zinc is also essential for building immunity McRae added. And like vitamin C zinc also possesses direct antiviral activity. Zinc supplementation produces dramatic reversal of low immune function she added. Zinc serves a vital role in many immune system reactions it promotes the destruction of foreign particles and microorganisms acts as a protectant against free-radical damage acts synergistically with vitamin A is required for proper white blood cell function proper Tcell levels and is a necessary cofactor in activating serum thymic factor--a thymus hormone with profound immune-enhancing properties. VITAMIN RETAILER 27 Because immunity is often intertwined with other health aspects when encountering a customer who is seeking immune support every system of the body and can be included in a daily wellness plan with other supplements like multivitamins EFAs and probiotics to support overall long-term health providing Immunity for Life Cantla added. The company also provides a wide range of supportive materials including a consumer product guide various brochures detailing its products and processes posters and decorative items for end-cap displays. We offer stores promotions for line drives as well as monthly savings on featured products to reward existing customers and create a new customer base Cantla pointed out. Regular use of traditionally fermented foods avoiding drinks and foods with added simple sugars which literally starves gut probiotic bacteria and taking a high-quality probiotic supplement at least once or twice daily can provide amazing health benefits. By Janet Poveromo taring at screens smoking an unhealthy diet and even obesity all take their toll on our eyesight. But along with taking on a healthier lifestyle there are other natural ways to help protect vision and consumers are catching on. In fact according to SPINS the market for vision health supplements grew by 8.9 percent to 203 MM in 2014 (SPINS Natural Health Mainstream Food Drug Mass Combo [excludes Wal-Mart] compared to 2012). The most exciting thing for MaxiVision is that consumers are becoming more aware of ocular health and the need to protect their eyes as they age said Brenda Gaulin marketing director with MedOp Health in Florida creator of the supplement brand. Our eyes are constantly being bombarded by the sun and blue light from our computer cell phones and tablets. Proper diet A Clear S and supplementation with high-quality carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin can increase macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and help reduce the risk of age-related eye conditions. Growing Appeal Most Americans only get about 10 percent of the lutein and zeaxanthin needed each day from dietary sources according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics. This means that supplementation is needed for most people to meet the recommended levels to support ocular health. Manufacturers are reporting widening interest in eye support products. Dr. Gerald Cysewski chief scientific officer at Cyanotech Corp. in Hawaii said eye supplements traditionally are popular amongst an older demographic but the company has seen younger consumers making purchases to help prevent future damage and maintain their eye health. Darren Landis (new product development) with Missouri-based Hyalogic LLC agreed. The market is growing tremendously and what is impacting the market is fear he said. People can stand a slight ache and pain but they are scared to death to lose their eyesight. Along with the aging population more and more younger aged people are taking supplements to protect their eyes for the future. Bob Kearns vice president consumer sales and marketing with Missouri-based EyePromise eye vitamin supplements said the company s products appeal to consumers who want to maintain and protect their vision particularly as they age. We have seen this consumer group widen in last few years as awareness of importance of healthy vision impact WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 32 VITAMIN RETAILER more consumers. This has become more apparent as consumer spend more time using electronic devices and experience issues around tired and dry eyes as well as protecting against the harmful blue light that these devices emit he said. After all added Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at Wisconsin-based EuroPharma Inc. you have a lot of people using computers tablets smart phones and other electronic screens. Plus there are many people who need additional nutrients--some that they may have missed out on during a lifetime of dietary choices-- to protect the tear ducts blood vessels focusing ability and other aspects of healthy vision. And we can t forget about the fact that for anyone struggling with diabetic neuropathy eye health is an increasingly critical aspect of managing the disease. So I think there are a lot of factors at work here. When research shows family history is a risk factor for developing eye conditions younger adults also value ocular supplements noted Gaulin. This is further validated by research that has shown that the FloraGLO Lutein found in MaxiVision supports ocular health and healthy skin in people of all ages. pounds that are unique to the berry and pass through blood-retinal and blood-aqueous barriers intact. That gives them a particularly strong ability to fight inflammatory damage strengthen blood vessels and prevent oxidative damage in the eyes she said. And since these com- pounds are not found in bilberry extracts it gives black currant a distinct advantage. It should come as no surprise that AREDS2 (Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2) the multi-center randomized trial designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of high doses of Top Products for Vision edOp Health The company s MaxiVision Whole Body Formula is its most popular product. This is because 90 percent of the AREDS2 study participants who took the ocular supplement also took a multivitamin. The supplement provides the AREDS2-based formula plus a high-quality multivitamin all in one product. For consumers who already take a high-quality multivitamin the MaxiVision Ocular Formula contains the AREDS2-based formula without the multivitamin. Both products are available in vegetable capsules and oncedaily drink mix packets. MaxiVision offers high-quality ingredients--with two times the lutein (20 mg) and zeaxanthin (4 mg) FloraGLO Lutein (the same lutein used in AREDS2) and natural source vitamin E (risk factors have been associated with synthetic vitamin E). MedOp Health operates its own on-site cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) manufacturing facility which provides attention to every step of the manufacturing process as well as the ability to act quickly to changes in the marketplace with regard to new research in vision health. MaxiVision contains a propriety blend of doctor-formulated newly researched eye vitamins including acetyl-L-carnitine alpha lipoic acid bilberry extract CoQ10 gingko grape seed extract quercetin resveratrol and taurine. Nutrex Hawaii The company s 12 mg BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin is a powerful supplement to help support eye health. Astaxanthin is 10 to 20 times stronger than other traditional eye supplements such as zeaxanthin lutein and beta-carotene at free radical scavenging according to the company. The 12 mg BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin is the third most popular carotenoid and antioxidant supplement in the natural products channel (according to recent SPINS data). The company also created a formula specifically for the eyes called EyeAstin that combines astaxanthin lutein zeaxanthin and bilberry extract which helps M Research and Vision Health At EyePromise there are a couple of areas of research the company sees impacting consumers. First is around the protection of our eyes as we get older and the impact that can have on our lives as we age Kearns said. Also increasing consumer awareness around steps that they can take to help mitigate some of the issues they will experience through nutritional supplementation. Second is the issue of dry eye for consumers. Today more than 40 million consumers suffer from dry eye and work with optometrists to help find relief to this problem on an ongoing basis. Also of interest are advances in natural eye health regarding black currant extract said Myers. It s a bit of departure because bilberry is typically the botanical that most people think of regarding eye health. She explained that black currant extract provides anthocyanin comJULY 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM support healthy vision and enhances normal eye function. EuroPharma One of the company s newest products is Vision Health which combines black currant extract with high-OPC French grape seed extract lutein and zeaxanthin to protect the delicate blood vessels of the eyes. Because of the inclusion of black currant and an advanced form of highly absorbable grape seed extract Vision Health offers a stronger leading-edge group of ingredients compared to the standard and more common bilberry formulas out there according to the company. Hyalogic Hylavision complete eye formula is one of the few--and may be the only product--that contains hyaluronic acid that focuses on the fluid balance of the eye according to Landis. We also have all the other necessary ingredients in the this formula that protect the eye from harmful oxidation and to create healthy eye circulation. EyePromise The visual EDGE formula is offered for everyday general eye health and in a visual performance formula for serious athletes. These formulas provide serious eye health nutrition for the consumers who want to protect and improved the quality of their vision. We consider EyePromise Vizual EDGE products to be a Ocuvite type of a product in that they have the same ingredients as other eye vitamins but have higher levels of dietary zeaxanthin said Kearns. The average consumer needs around 8 mgs of zeaxanthin daily to maintain optimal eye health. Through our diets we ingest about 1 mg per day. The higher levels of zeaxanthin have a positive impact on the quality of vision issues that cannot be solved through glasses of contacts and that most consumers just accept as part of aging. Just as we take nutrients to maintain the help of our bodies nutritional supplementation particularly with higher levels of dietary zeaxanthin in conjunction with lutein can help to mitigate the impact of aging on your eyes. VITAMIN RETAILER 33 Vision macular xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and or omega-3 LCPUFAs (DHA and EPA) for the treatment of AMD (age-related macular degeneration) and cataract would be of interest to supplement suppliers. MaxiVision products contain the same ingredients studied. The AREDS2 ocular health study showed that supplementing with this specific combination of vitamins minerals and carotenoids can reduce the progression of age-related eye conditions by 25 percent Gaulin noted. In light of this research it has become standard of care for eye doctors and physicians to recommend an AREDS2-based supplement for patients with age-related eye conditions. Additionally new research points to how in the near future genetic testing may play a larger role in identifying these conditions so that interventions may be made. A Clear the convenience of taking the drink mix just once a day and enjoy the departure from sameness of taking the capsules every day Gaulin noted. Some people have trouble taking capsules so the drink mix is a great option for this group as well. Doctors like this option because anything that makes it easier to consume daily vitamins can increase patients compliance in taking supplements intended to support their vision and health. Straight in the Eye There s been a lot of discussion about one delivery form outperforming another and in some rare cases with specific ingredients (glutathione for example) it is true said Myers. However for plant-based compounds standard capsules tablets and soft gels have all been used successfully in clinical trials and medical applications she said. Kearns noted that one of the areas where the company has found that consumers would like help is in solving the need to take multiple soft gels on a daily basis. The newest formula that we have developed (viZual EDGE) is a one soft gel per-day formula. Additionally we just introduced a new one-a-day formula in a chewable format that is easier to take. The traditional delivery method for MaxiVision has been a vegetable capsule although recently MedOp Health introduced a citrus-flavored powder that can mix with water juice or into a smoothie. In 2015 Essential Formulas introduced the launch of its new Reg Activ probiotics products which contain a revolutionary strain of glutathione-producing bacteria named Lactobacullus fermentum ME-3. Reg Activ with ME-3--the Patented Probiotic Proven to Produce Glutathione the Master Antioxidant Since Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 produces glutathione let s begin by reviewing the importance and significance of glutathione. Glutathione has been called the master antioxidant because it is the most important and most prevalent antioxidant in humans. Glutathione is made in every cell of the body and one of its primary functions is to protect all of the components inside every cell of the body against free radical aging damage. In addition to being an antioxidant glutathione also recycles or regenerates other important antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and coenzyme Q10. Glutathione is also the master detoxifying agent because it is the most important compound involved in detoxifying virtually all toxins we get exposed to. Glutathione levels are depleted during the process of removing toxins from the body. Most people have sub-optimal glutathione levels in the body due to constant and ever-increasing exposure to environmental toxins as well as low levels of necessary nutrients due to poor diets and nutrient depletions causes by use of OTC and prescription drugs. risks Due to its antioxidant activity probiotics containing Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 will reduce the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol which lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease. Reduces inflammation Studies report that Lactobacillus fermentum ME3 reduces levels of key markers of inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6). Since inflammation is associated with virtually all health problems ME-3 s ability to lower inflammation is another great ME-3 health benefit. Increases Paraoxonase enzyme activity Paraoxonases are enzymes that detoxify pesticides such as organophosphates. Organophosphates are widely used in agriculture and they are also found in a wide variety of pesticides used on residential lawns and gardens. These pesticides are powerful neurotoxins especially in younger children. In one large government-funded study 93 percent of children tested had traces of one or more organophosphates in their systems. Potent activity against pathological bacteria studies report that Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 has significant activity against a number of well-known pathological bacteria that occur frequently in humans. At the same time studies show that ME-3 is not harmful to beneficial strains of probiotic bacteria. Thrives and survives Studies report that ME-3 is stable at room temperature so it does not require refrigeration. Studies also report that ME-3 is very stable when exposed to strong acidity. ers and their employees. Merchandising Tips Retailers should stress that although probiotics are commonly associated with gut health this particular probiotic is unique in its ability to produce glutathione in the body. Therefore this product would not be placed with the traditional probiotic section but instead in the individual sections of the store for each product (cardio liver immune etc.). Retailers should also stress that glutathione is notoriously hard to supplement with because it is oxidized very rapidly in the bloodstream. This is the only product out there that is capable of continually producing glutathione in the body eliminating the issues with supplementation. What Can You Do for Effective Relief Were it not for one OTC medication called SalivaSure manufactured by Scandinavian Formulas Inc. Sellersville PA the situation for a dry mouth sufferer would be pretty dismal. SalivaSure is steadily gaining product recognition in both the medical and dental communities. SalivaSure increases reduced salivary gland function as it dissolves slowly in the mouth without over-stimulating the salivary glands or causing tooth decay. Its unique formulation results in the secretion of natural saliva (water proteins salts enzymes and other important components). It also stimulates saliva in a controlled quantity because the impaired gland needs to operate at a functional rate for a long time. A gland with impaired function should not be pressed to work harder than necessary. SalivaSure tested a clinical study has been shown to not have any side effects or drug interactions. Patients suffering from decreased saliva production may have difficulty chewing or swallowing food and may develop nutritional deficiencies as a result. These patients are also at risk for developing tooth decay gum disease fungal infections and sores. Proactive dry mouth treatment is vital to prevent these outcomes. A study was devised to determine the effectiveness of SalivaSure lozenges in increasing saliva production initially and after one week of use in a group of eleven men and four women ages 21 to 60 years all of who presented with histories of dry mouth. Research Methods On the first day of testing subjects collected their saliva for one hour into a graduated cylinder. Subjects then ingested a SalivaSure lozenge and the saliva collection process was repeated. Subjects were supplied with SalivaSure lozenges for at-home use and took the lozenges as directed for the next week. On day eight subjects reported to the laboratory for reevaluation. Their saliva was collected for one hour into a graduated cylinder and they once again ingested a SalivaSure lozenge and recollected their saliva for one hour. With a variety of products for nasal and sinus care oral health and overall well-being Xlear Inc. is dedicated to simple healthy prevention. Products Xlear Nasal Care Xlear nasal care products incorporate the natural sweetener xylitol into a simple saline solution. Xylitol has an anti-adhesive quality preventing bacterial adhesion to the cell tissue. Because the bacteria are inhibited from sticking they have less effect on the body. Xlear is also hyperosmotic--it moisturizes and soothes nasal and sinus tissues. It is known to help with upper respiratory infections allergies and even asthma. Spry Dental Defense Xylitol is known for its oral health benefits in inhibiting tooth decay. XyloSweet and Lite&Sweet XyloSweet and Lite&Sweet are natural sweeteners made for the healthconscious consumer. XyloSweet is 100 percent xylitol in its natural form. It has a glycemic index of seven (compared to sugar s 85) and has 40 percent fewer calories than sugar. Lite&Sweet is a blend of xylitol and erythritol another natural sweetener. Lite&Sweet has a glycemic index of three and has 75 percent fewer calories than sugar. Both sweeteners can be replaced with sugar in a 1 1 ratio. Customer Questions interaction What is xylitol Xylitol is a natural sweetener. It is a sugar-alcohol taken from the woody parts of plants. Today xylitol is generally derived from corncobs or birch trees. Safe for pets Similar to other human foods like chocolate xylitol is not safe for pets especially dogs. GMOs Although some companies may get their xylitol from GMO corn the xylitol in Xlear Inc. products comes from non-GMO corn. Allergies to corn Because xylitol is derived from the corncob there are no problems with corn allergies. People who have corn allergies are generally allergic to the protein in the corn which is in the corn kernel. Corn vs. Birch Xylitol can be sourced from either plant. There is no difference in taste or quality between the two. Xlear Inc. sources its xylitol from corn because it is much more sustainable environmentally friendly and cheaper to produce. Research and Quality Assurance There are many studies dating back to the 1950s that show the oral health benefits of xylitol. In 1996 research was published that looked at past xylitol studies. This study found that of all the children tested there was a 42 percent decrease in ear infections in the children that chewed gum containing xylitol. This study also was the first to identify xylitol s anti-adhesion property. Since then there have been many studies which link xylitol to improved upper respiratory health and tooth decay prevention. Merchandising Tips Material Xlear Inc. products are non-GMO (genetically modified organism) and are safe to use by anyone. They have no link to allergies. Dos and Don ts Products containing xylitol are not considered drugs we cannot claim it prevents or cures anything. 46 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 2015 Product Sales Training for Retailers Hyalogic LLC 610 N.W. Furthermore as I pointed out in an article last year from this same issue of Vitamin Retailer magazine over the past few decades the choices for nutraceutical antioxidants have increased exponentially as have the number of articles written about those nutraceuticals. It seems like every time we open our emails there s a new antioxidant super fruit being touted the best or most powerful antioxidant. My personal response to these emails is So what Even if a new super fruit nutraceutical is a powerful antioxidant what effects has it been shown to have in human beings In other words what specific benefits does the antioxidant offer and to what parts of our bodies This article will examine the role of some key antioxidants in relation to human health. T review the relationship between free radicals and antioxidants. When cells use oxygen to generate energy free radicals are created including reactive oxygen species (ROS) reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and others. At high concentrations they generate oxidative stress which can damage cell structures 1 which in turn may contribute to the development of leading degenerative diseases 2 3 as well as the process of aging itself. Conversely antioxidants produced by the body or obtained from food supplements act as free radical scavengers preventing and repairing damages caused by ROS and RNS thereby lowering the risk of degenerative diseases.4-8 In fact specific antioxidants can have specific benefits with regard to disease prevention. cent9 with no significant differences among the three doses of LA. Symptom improvement occurs within three to five weeks with oral and intravenous dosing.11-19 Doses lower than 600 mg daily have not been shown to be effective.20 Astaxanthin The cosmetic effects on human skin by 4 mg per day astaxanthin supplementation were demonstrated in a single blind placebo-controlled study21 using 49 U.S. healthy middle-aged women. In addition 133-400 mg OPC day from grape seed extract was shown to be effective in reducing edema (i.e. water retention) in surgical patients 43 and people who regularly suffered from leg swelling in their work environments (due to prolonged sitting).44 An unrelated but interesting benefit is that 100 mg of grape seed extract before each meal reduced calorie intake by 4 percent in people who consumed 1 791 or more calories daily.45 Lutein and Zeaxanthin Lutein and zeaxanthin play a role in healthy visual development and functioning including the ability to efficiently 50 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 FAMILY OF PUBLICATIONS www.VitaminRetailer.com 20 Y ars Celebratingellence e of Exc Branch Out and Join VRM Media s www.GlutenFreeRetailer.com 1995 2015 www.NaturalPractitionerMag.com www.NIEmagazine.com www.FitnessTrainerMag.com VR s Upcoming Issue Highlights September October Oct. A common component found in such supplements is lutein a natural carotenoid pigment synthesized by plants and microorganisms. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components and is marketed to protect against ocular diseases such as AMD and to support eye health in general according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Further dietary lutein may protect against DNA damage but this may be due to concomitant intake of other micronutrients. However preliminary evidence suggests that supplemental lutein may reduce biomarkers for CVD in healthy nonsmokers and increase serum lutein in patients with early atherosclerosis thereby regulating serum lipids and reducing inflammatory cytokines. The body does not produce lutein naturally therefore we need to obtain it through diet and supplements. Lutein is found in marigold flowers corn and dark-green leafy vegetables. Some examples include kale spinach winter squash cruciferous vegetables cabbage green beans yellow orange fruits mangoes papayas peaches and oranges in addition to egg yolk. To protect the eyes wear sunglasses and brimmed hats that protect from direct and reflected sunlight do not smoke and limit the intake of alcohol saturated fats and cholesterol. Be sure the diet contains 6-20 mg of elemental lutein per day either through food or a quality dietary supplement according to the MedOp Health Inc. website. JULY 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 55 HEALTHANDNUTRITION Depressive Answers to Natural Mood By Cheryl Myers he prevailing myth is that our intellect is in the driver s seat and with strength of will we can overcome mood. In fact the opposite is true. Mood colors our perceptions and strongly influences our reactions. While it is true that with effort people can learn to better manage their moods and develop coping mechanisms if the mood is strong enough intellect alone is rarely enough. For example if you are in a sour mood because your team just lost a game you may well be able to talk yourself into a better place and put it in perspective. But if your mood is also fueled by neurochemical imbalances in the brain and or hormonal imbalances in the thyroid or adrenal gland it becomes a much more complex and difficult situation. Because of the myth that intellect trumps mood people with serious mood disorders can be marginalized as weak or out of control. Mood disor- T ders are diseases that impair thinking and behavior. Physical changes are occurring that disrupt normal brain functioning. Telling a person with depression to cheer up is like telling a person with a broken leg to get up and jog. They are physically incapacitated. Understanding the physiological basis of mood disorders improves treatment and reduces negative stereotyping. Depression As a practitioner after evaluating for hormonal influences due to thyroid and or adrenal dysfunction my next consideration is what else might be interfering with proper brain function. Recent research has found that in depression especially major depression inflammation is a significant factor. Inflammation changes the nature of how cells interact with each other how neurotransmitters function how long brain cells work before they self- destruct and how many new brain cells are created each day. For decades mind-body workers have argued that pervasive negative emotions especially stress create physiological changes in the body. Now mainstream research is validating and exploring those connections. Studies at Cork University Hospital and College in Ireland found that chemical stress responses from the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis encourage the release of inflammatory cytokines that have a detrimental effect on the brain and behavior. This is a much more complex set of factors than the previous brain chemistry only model. Unhealthy learned responses to stressors early in life can lead to a pattern that virtually guarantees inflammatory activity in the brain. For example negative emotions often spur indulgence in unhealthy foods that give a fleeting sensation of pleasure. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 56 VITAMIN RETAILER An unhealthy diet--including the lack of omega-3 fatty acids healthy whole foods and sources of high fiber-- increases inflammation as junk food is ingested at ever higher levels. However this is reversible with better eating habits. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men randomized to consume eight servings of fresh fruits and vegetables per day showed reduced levels of C-reactive protein compared to men with a low intake of carotenoid-rich foods. Since stressors of various kinds elevate inflammatory markers an effective natural intervention needs to include supplements that dramatically reduce inflammation that either can work in tandem with prescriptions or on their own. Finding an effective long-term and natural therapeutic agent--whether as a stand-alone or add-on therapy--has been difficult. While St. John s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has solid studies supporting its use in cases of mild and moderate depression it hasn t been found as effective for those with major depressive disorder. However current research has validated some supplements for antidepressant activity in more difficult cases. The two supplements with some of the most compelling scientific investigation for reductions in inflammation and improvement in brain function are curcumin (extracted from the herb turmeric) and omega-3 fatty acids from fish--EPA and DHA. effects of stress and depression. It reduces inflammatory markers in the bloodstream that travel to the brain and it prevents low levels of serotonin noradrenaline and dopamine. Additionally laboratory research shows that curcumin promotes neurogenesis (brain cell formation). An unhealthy diet--including the lack of omega-3 fatty acids healthy whole foods and sources of high fiber--increases inflammation as junk food is ingested at ever higher levels. The research on curcumin and depression is escalating. In a search of the electronic database of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institute of Medicine PubMed.gov there are 77 studies found when searching for curcumin and depression. Interestingly the studies using doses of 1 000 mg per day in studies of standard curcumin did not show much impact but in studies of two types of enhanced-absorption curcumin highly significant results were observed. In a randomized controlled clinical study of curcumin and individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared the efficacy and safety of high absorption BCM-95 Curcumin (curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils to boost absorption) versus the prescription anti-depressant drug fluoxetine (one brand name is Prozac) was examined--alone and in combination. The highest proportion of response measured by the HAMD-17 was in the group using the combination of fluoxetine and BCM-95 Curcumin at 77.8 percent. Interestingly the single-therapy groups scored almost exactly the same with fluoxetine at 64.7 percent and BCM-95 Curcumin at 62.5 percent--numbers so close that the data is not statistically significant from one another. There are two important conclusions from the result of this study. First in this study BCM-95 Curcumin worked as well as the prescription drug fluoxetine in terms of the measurable changes in the HAMD-17 score from baseline to six weeks of treatment. Second this study provides the first human clinical indication that BCM-95 Curcumin may be used as an effective and safe treatment for patients with MDD without causing significant adverse effects. This study was quickly followed with two more published human studies on this type of curcumin and depression validating the power to address MDD. Another study looked at enhanced absorption curcumin with piperine an extract of black pepper. The researchers did not compare this form of curcumin to antidepressant medication instead it was an examination of the power of curcumin to work with these drugs for enhanced effects in MDD. This six-week study used a dose of 1 000 mg curcumin piperine per day and found that the group using both the herb and drug together had measurably better improvements in the level of their depression than the group using the drug alone. Omega 3s Omega-3s are critical to a healthy brain. DHA and phospholipids make up a great deal of our brain. The brain itself is about 60 percent fat--about 15 to 20 percent of is DHA. The brain needs phospholipids and DHA to develop properly and age well so I think it is important to incorporate phospholipids with omega-3 fatty acids. Krill oil does this as does a patented salmon extract from France developed by a process called vectorization. These fats help protect the brain and the way it functions. Consider this in-vitro study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry for instance. In it researchers pre-treated neuronal cells with DHA from a salmon-sourced phospholipid-bound omega-3 for 48 hours before exposing these cells to soluble oligomers of amyloid-beta peptide which are known to cause the brain cell damage associated with Alzheimer s and other brain disorders. DHA greatly increased neuron (brain cell) survival and reduced damage. The researchers VITAMIN RETAILER 57 Curcumin Turmeric is an incredibly useful herb. It is an excellent spice used in yellow curries and many southeast Asian dishes. It is a natural dye used for cloth and for foods. Turmeric also contains one of the most powerful natural medicines in the world--curcumin. Yet there is very little curcumin in turmeric--only about 2 to 5 percent of the spice is curcumin. That is why the important medical studies have focused on curcumin extracted from turmeric. It is virtually impossible to achieve medicinal levels of curcumin in the body using turmeric. Curcumin has well-noted antiinflammatory ability. It has been used to heal stress mania and other depression-like conditions for centuries. Curcumin reverses the physical JULY 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION concluded that such neuroprotective effects could be of major interest in the prevention of Alzheimer s and other neurodegenerative diseases. There are many studies showing the importance of omega-3s brain health and mood An Australian review found that DHA improves the blood flow in the brain when you perform cognitive tasks regulates the way that blood sugars are used in the brain and reduces inflammation and oxidative stress. A German study is investigating the deficiencies of omega-3s in elite endurance athletes where the cardiovascular system takes an extreme workout and where keeping positive mental outlooks are crucial to performance. Italian clinical study examined the effect of omega-3s on quality of life phospholipids profile and effects on depression in elderly female volunteers. At the end of only eight weeks the participants reported significant improvements in depression and overall quality of life. Since the omega-3s modified the phospholipid profiles in the brain it follows that having phospholipids as part of your omega-3 supplementation can offer important support in depression and other mood disorders. A Portuguese study found that the natural layer of phospholipids in the brain is altered by chronic unpredictable stress (as are glutathione ratios). The researchers concluded that phospholipid levels may be used as markers of depression because of the way they physically affect the brain. In similar research at Columbia University researchers found that low DHA levels tended to correspond with increased anxiety levels and negative mood. There are a variety of ways to deliver omega-3 fatty acids besides eating more cold water fatty fish. About one in 10 Americans report symptoms of depression and the causes can be as varied as the individ58 VITAMIN RETAILER uals reporting them. Some integrative physicians believe that the epidemic of inflammation in the U.S. due to a variety of factors is behind the increased incidence of many kinds of mood disorders especially depression. Unfortunately many of the current therapeutic drugs for depression may only be effective and safe in the short term. When taken long term these medications may cause sedation weight gain loss of libido and or sexual pleasure and even physical sensations of numbness or pain. Finding natural interventions that together create and effective protocol for depression should be the first step in regaining the energy focus and happiness lost to these devastating mood disorders. However remember that depression is a serious sometimes life-threatening mood disorder and people with depression should seek the advice of a professional to help them develop a protocol that works for them. This is especially true of individuals considering suicide or self-harm. It only takes a moment s lapse into despair to commit suicide and pausing and talking to someone can sustain a person until they can get help. If any of you are experiencing this level of pain please know that as your brain heals you will feel better. If you need help the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week with both English and Spanish speakers. B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND B reast cancer is a major fear for many women these days. The fear comes from the fact that many have watched someone close to them succumb to this disease and or its treatment. Fortunately there is much that can be done through diet and lifestyle to dramatically reduce the risk of breast cancer. One of the risk factors for breast cancer is fibrocystic breast disease (FBD). Though it is not as significant a factor as the major breast cancer risk factors family history early onset of menstruation (menarche) and late or no first pregnancy. It does carry with it increased risk and is a major reason why many women are subjected to mammograms as the lumps of FBD often cannot be easily distinguished from breast cancer. FBD does provide some additional insight on how a woman can reduce her risk of breast cancer. The Importance of Dietary Fiber and Probiotics in Breast Health Breast disease both breast cancer and FBD has been linked to low fiber diet and constipation. In one interesting study published over 40 years ago in the medical journal The Lancet researchers noted an association between abnormal cell structure from breast cells in nipple aspirates of breast fluid and the frequency of bowel movements women that had fewer than three bowel movements per week had a risk of FBD that was 4.5 times greater than women having at least one a day. This association is probably due to the absorption of gut-derived toxins and a less than ideal bacterial flora in the JULY 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM large intestine transforming various toxic metabolites including carcinogens and mutagens. The take a way message is to promote effective elimination and detoxification by keeping things moving. A high fiber diet is critical in this goal. One of the key ways in which the body gets rid of toxic chemicals as well as hormones like estrogen is by attaching glucuronic acid to them in the liver and then excreting this complex in the bile. Betaglucuronidase is a bacterial enzyme that uncouples (breaks) the bond between the excreted estrogen and glucuronic acid. When beta-glucoronidase breaks the bond the freed estrogen is available to be reabsorbed back into the body instead of being excreted. An elevated beta-glucuronidase activity is associated with an increased risk for various cancers particularly hormone-dependent cancers like breast and prostate cancer as well as in colon cancer. There are some very easy ways to reduce the activity of this bacterial enzyme and increase the excretion of estrogen. A very simple yet effective way is to increase the intake of high fiber foods especially vegetables and legumes. Women on a vegetarian diet excrete two to three times more estrogens than women on an omnivorous diet who also reabsorb more estrogens. Furthermore omnivorous women have 50 percent higher average level of free estrogen reabsorbed from the intestinal tract. This difference is most likely due to the higher fiber intake of the vegetarian diet. A higher intake of dietary fiber is asso- ciated with a more favorable gut flora. In women with FBD or concerned about breast cancer recommending a high quality probiotic is very much indicated. Probiotic supplementation has been shown to lower the activity of beta-glucuronidase and may also help improve bowel function as well. Two very important goals in promoting breast health. The recommended dosage is 5 to 12 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus and or Bifidobacteria sp. daily. Increase Phytoestrogens Vegetarian diets are also high in phytoestrogens that are able to bind to the same cell receptors as the estrogen your body produces. That s a good thing because when phytoestrogens occupy the parking places estrogen can t produce effects on cells. By competing with estrogen phytoestrogen causes a drop in estrogen effects and are thus sometimes called antiestrogens. Great sources of phytoestrogens include soy and soy foods ground flaxseeds and nuts and seeds. In fact taking 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds daily is a very good recommendation for breast cancer prevention and breast health. Fish Oils Fish oils provide the long chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Women with the highest ratio of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA to omega-6 fatty acids (the omega3 omege-6 ratio) had a 67 percent reduced risk of breast cancer making it VITAMIN RETAILER 59 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray one of the most powerful nutritional factors in preventing breast cancer. Take 1 000 to 3 000 mg of EPA DHA from a high quality fish oils. version of estrogen from cancer-producing forms to non-toxic breakdown products. Adding one or two servings daily of cooked cruciferous vegetables to the diet or taking supplements containing IC3 (400 mg daily) or DIM (2 mg kg day) shifts the ratio from bad to good estrogen breakdown products. depression irritability etc.). The usual dosage of chaste berry extract (often standardized to contain 0.5 percent agnuside) in tablet or capsule form is 175 to 225 mg daily. Cabbage Family Vegetables Cabbage family vegetables such as broccoli cauliflower cabbage and kale contain anticancer phytochemicals known as glucosinolates that are potent stimulators of natural detoxifying enzymes in the body. Studies have shown that increasing the intake of cabbage family vegetables or taking the chief glucosinolates indole3-carbinol (I3C) or DIM as a dietary supplement significantly increased the conTable 1. Dietary factors in breast cancer Final Comment Another key recommendation for breast health is to drink more green tea or take a green tea extract. Population-based studies have shown green tea consumption reduces breast cancer risk. For example studies have suggested that breast cancer rates are lower in Japan in part because people there typically drink about three cups of green tea daily. To achieve the same degree of protection from supplements containing green tea extract would mean taking a daily dose of 300 to 400 milligrams. VR Michael T. According to the book new research indicates that the body can become sensitized to stress-- the brain will re-circuit itself in response. In addition studies show that the stressful events that occur in childhood such as losing a parent or being raised by an alcoholic or abusive parent can permanently rewire the brain s circuitry and result in inappropriate responses to stress the authors reported. Question How does curcumin work against cancer Why consider it for cancer research Answer Historically there are large amounts of turmeric in the diets in India and the differences between types of diseases between India and the United States and other countries with a Western diet are very compelling. Because curcumin is the primary medicinal compound in turmeric it has long been credited with being one of the most powerful cell protecting botanicals in the world and an explanation for the value of a turmeric-rich diet. Tumors often start as a reaction to inflammation and oxidative stress. Both of these conditions are really the cause of all disease states whether or not the triggering mechanism was based through environment or diet or by an unfortunate confluence of heredity and gene mutations. Curcumin works through many pathways--including as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant--which is exactly why it is so effective against cancer. the same thing as turmeric especially when you re talking about therapeutic value. But the confusion persists and you see it reflected on many turmeric and curcumin supplements as well-- bottles of plain turmeric will be labeled as having curcumin when in reality there s very little of the compound present in the product. In fact there is only about 2 to 5 percent curcumin content in powdered turmeric--that s just not enough for medical issues. Question We hear about cancer a lot but do we know what causes it Question What type of curcumin do you use in your research Is it available in health food stores or is it only reserved for researchers Answer The development of cancer is the body s inappropriate response to inflammation and cellular damage. Cells are damaged and make more damaged (malignant) cells. The cancer cells spin out of control as tumors form grow and metastasize to other tissues. But this doesn t happen without cause. We now know that cancer results from genetic expression environmental exposure diet and or a combination of each. With regard to its treatment the conventional mono-targeted therapies have generally let us down because a single issue or pathway generally does not cause cancer. As a result when we treat cancer conventionally by focusing on only one contributing factor you may cut off one route for the growth of cancer but it simply finds another. The next monotherapy sets up a repeat pattern where the treatment always appears to be a step behind the tumor formation. 64 VITAMIN RETAILER Answer I use BCM-95 Curcumin in my research. It is an enhanced absorption curcumin that it is blended with turmeric essential oil containing valuable medical compounds called tumerones that boost curcumin s absorption and activity In fact BCM-95 Curcumin absorbs up to 10 times better than plain curcumin. It now has 24 published studies which is another reason I continue to use it in my studies. This is what attracted me to it for research--it seemed like a much more likely form of curcumin for practical applications because you don t need to use as much of BCM-95 to achieve beneficial results. Standard curcumin is available in health food stores in a variety of supplement formulas and as a stand-alone ingredient by multiple vendors but the BCM-95 Curcumin products are found in the Terry Naturally brand by EuroPharma. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2015 Question Is curcumin the same as the spice turmeric that many people add to their food Answer It is not the same and this is a big point of confusion for many people who hear about the benefits of curcumin (or turmeric) and then think of the two terms interchangeably.
