Her passion for natural health and obvious dedication to caring for others made a strong and memorable impression on me like no other speaker I ve heard before. Her talks truly come from the heart. I was grateful to learn that in September Low Dog presented data from the Centers on Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to congressional staffers at an educational briefing Life Fortified A Physician s Case for Dietary Supplements held by the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC). This was in cooperation with leading trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry-the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) Natural Products Association (NPA) and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA) that jointly issued a press release. They could not have chosen a better representative. In her presentation Low Dog noted that the CDC data showed that tens of millions of Americans aren t getting enough essential nutrients to ensure their bodies function optimally a stark contrast to headlines and sound bites that assert Americans get the nutrients they need from food alone. She highlighted that nearly 90 million Americans have a vitamin D deficiency 30 million are deficient in vitamin B6 18 million are deficient in vitamin B12 and nearly 16 million have a vitamin C deficiency. I m extremely concerned when I I hear misleading sound bites on the evening news that people don t need vitamins because they get all the nutrients they need from their diet because it isn t just patients who hear this doctors also hear it repeatedly Low Dog said. This mantra that Americans get all the nutrients they need from food is simply not true and the data demonstrates it is false. It is much harder than you think to get the nutrients you need from food alone. Low Dog illustrated this point by outlining what the average person would need to eat in order to get the minimum recommended amount of many individual nutrients. For example in order to get the recommended 18 milligrams of iron per day through food you d need to eat four cups of raisins 15 cups of broccoli three cups of cooked spinach 10 ounces of beef liver or 45 ounces of chicken breast. She noted that meeting the minimum amount of nutrition is especially difficult for low-income Americans who can use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) assistance to purchase candy and soda but not multivitamins. Low Dog concluded that a thoughtful coordinated approach between industry and public health initiatives is required to address the many complex factors like lower nutrient content in today s foods and unintended consequences of well-intentioned health campaigns to avoid certain nutrientrich foods like egg yolks that contribute to Americans vitamin and mineral deficiencies she said. Boldly clearing the gray areas about the benefits of supplementation should continue to be a priority and Low Dog can again be an inspiration--especially at the retail level. Celebrating 40 Years fter having to drive 40 miles to find the right foods David Hawkins made the decision to open his own health food store. He founded Mother Earth Foods in 1975 and this year the store is celebrating 40 years as West Virginia s longest established provider of living whole foods and natural herbal and vitamin supplements. The Parkersburg institution is located in a 100-year-old building that Hawkins renovated as business grew. In preparation for Mother Earth s 40th anniversary extensive renovations were completed with 800 square feet of additional retail space numerous interior upgrades expanded parking landscaping and solar panel installation. It has a total of 4 000 square feet on the ground level and a 1 200square-foot apartment upstairs he explained. Room 1 as we call it houses our supplements our bulk herb and HBA sections. Room 2 is our specialty food room with non-GMO (genetically modified organism) gluten-free raw and paleo products. Room 3 is our beverage tea and coffee space as well as our green living pet and apparel section along with craft beer and wine. Room 4 our newest renovation houses gourmet cheeses specialized beverages (PARKERSBURG WV) MOTHER EARTH FOODS A Mother Earth Foods the oldest natural food store in West Virginia opened in 1975 and still operates from its original location. frozen food and organic bulk foods. According to Hawkins Mother Earth Foods sees an average of 175 customers and approximately 4 500 to 5 000 in sales each day the store averages about a 46 percent profit. In addition to having more than 300 suppliers Mother Earth Foods carries its own private label line called Earthworks which has more than 300 SKUs. Hawkins explained that Earthworks is a way to offer a better price point and create loyalty to our customer brand. Creating Loyalty While Mother Earth Foods competition has changed over the years today the list includes Kroger CVS Storeowner David Hawkins helps Danielle Dewitt make a selection in the store s new gourmet cheese section. 8 VITAMIN RETAILER Foodland Walmart GNC and Vitamin Pit. Hawkins credited his informed staff and loyalty program as part of the store s success and what makes it stand out from the crowd. Through the use of a key card the loyalty program rewards customers with points for every dollar spent. The points can be redeemed at the register as cash off a sale. However Hawkins stressed We are not a discount health food store we are a healing food store with good value and pricing he explained. We have always set ourselves apart. We offer so much more than selling a product that our loyal following keeps supporting us. We do a lot of community support too. The store holds weekly training for its staff as well as a monthly Healthy Living series featuring Hawkins or a guest speaker that is free to the public. In addition Hawkins started a weekly radio talk show called Highway to Health seven years ago. The show is streamed live to the internet and features guests who talk about industry issues such as GMOs organic growing and herbal nutrition. The retailer also holds two major events per year--a store birthday sale and a customer appreciation weekend featuring a community picnic with live music and healthy food. Our picnic is now 32 years old said Hawkins. We offer 25 percent off the entire store on those days. It s only a five- WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 hour sale and we do a week s worth of business in those five hours. Looking Forward As Hawkins prepares to take Mother Earth Foods into the future he noted the challenges of the changing marketplace. Everybody wants a piece of our industry especially the mass market. They are copycats though. We set the trend and they want part of it. We have to stand on quality and fair pricing and go the extra mile to give the customers more than just a product. Along with staying a step ahead of the followers Hawkins explained that his customer base is also changing and that technology has become an integral part of the retail experience. The shopping experience is changing fast and we have to move with the times. I like seeing a resurgence of young folks adopting a lifestyle I adopted over 40 years ago. It is refreshing and they are what keep us moving in a positive direction. Hawkins noted that he works to empower his staff so that they can be part of the movement as well. It takes teamwork to be successful so every one in my organization is a key player he said. We have so many ideas that it takes time to bring them into fruition but it has to do with listening to our customers too. And as for his secret to success Hawkins said that it is simply passion--he just loves what he does. We are the stewards in a sense. We care about our community and ask for their support back he concluded. Having been doing this for over 40 years I have learned a thing or two. The benefits that these oils were used for centuries ago are the same that make them popular today. Essential oils are beneficial to physical mental emotional and spiritual healing said Kathy Thompson assistant store manager of Rainbow Blossom Natural Food Markets in Kentucky. People make their own skincare use aromatherapy and use essential oils for direct medicinal and spiritual purposes. A BY CORINNE ANDERSON effects of essential oils for a wide range of health issues such as infections pain anxiety depression tumors premenstrual symptoms and nausea. However there are issues with conducting research studies on essential oils. Aromatherapy While the word itself indicates a sense of smell aromatherapy oils can be used in multiple ways. Uses are not limited to the realm of the physical well-being--other uses include making your own natural household and outdoor products. We let moms and dads know to turn the shower on and steam up the bathroom then shake a few drops of Olbas Oil down the shower and sit with the baby in the bathroom to breathe in the soothing vapors and break up a croupy cough said Karen Page national sales manager for Olbas Herbal Remedies with U.S. offices in Pennsylvania. Olbas Oil can also be used in a cool mist vaporizer as massage oil and for people suffering from respiratory complaints. Kim Wells personal care brand manager at Illinois-based NOW Foods agreed. Our consumers are the ones shopping in health food stores or interested in healthy alternatives to mass market products someone looking to replace scented candles with a diffuser and essential oils a consumer that is into DIY projects or looking to experience the benefits of aromatherapy. Lastly it s difficult to get funding or even approval for research since oils have been used on humans for thousands of years. These tests would immediately go to human trials and that is not a conventional clinical scientific approach according to the university. But the studies that have been done which can be found on the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy website have linked oils with positive results for such issues such as reducing inflammation irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) stress reduction and calming. Because of these positive effects and long history of success retail stores are actively promoting their uses Thompson said. Something cool about working with essential oils is that your body knows what it is looking for. When you like an aroma you are ready to begin working with that particular essence. Aromatherapy at Retail Health-conscious consumers will easily find benefits of using essential oils from literature provided at store level in some cases and social media. We advertise in relevant journals offer coupons and promos in select stores as well as provide demos of Olbas Oil in stores where appropriate Page said discussing how Olbas informs their customers. At Rainbow Blossom Once we identify what the customer is seeking we can begin recommending essential oils for their specific need Thompson added. The top-selling brand in the store is Aura Cacia 100 percent pure essentials oil in both single essence and blended. The store has carried up to three brands but found that having one main brand plus specialty items works best for their customers. NOW Foods also has their own line of essential oils including 80 variations of pures (essences) organics and blends. The oils are one of the few products that NOW Foods doesn t produce themselves but the company said it demands high-quality What are the Benefits According to an article by the University of Minnesota s Taking Charge of Your Health and Wellbeing research studies have shown positive 10 VITAMIN RETAILER There are four main reasons why doing research on essential oils is difficult the article by the University of Minnesota said. First essential oils are not standardized which means that the oils can be influenced by geography weather conditions season and even time of day they are harvested how they are processed and how they are packaged and stored. Second it s hard to conduct blind studies with aromatic substances you can t use a placebo group. Third it can be difficult to tell what caused the outcome of the study. For example oils are sometimes applied with massage which makes it difficult to tell whether or not the outcome was due to the essential oil alone the massage or the combination. Oils are also made up of many different chemical constituents and it can be hard to figure out which ingredient may have resulted in the outcome. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 standards from its sources. NOW works with multiple vendors around the world who are experienced in producing and distilling essential oils Wells explained. Since they [essential oils] are pure and very potent we always ask that they be used with caution or diluted if used for purposes other than aromatherapy she added. With so many brands selling essential oils Wells said NOW focuses on high-quality products at affordable prices. We have a variety of essential oils and some of our species of specific oils may differ from a competitor but it doesn t make them any less pure or potent. Quality is key--so pure essential oils over synthetic Page added. One thing to keep in mind when comparing products is to look at the cost and understand that high price doesn t necessarily mean high value or high quality Wells continued. Our consumers are smart and many of them want to know about the distillation process and how we check the raw materials once they arrive at our facility and what kind of steps we are taking to ensure they are getting the product they paid for she explained. Some oils may be more expensive based on their availability the high demand or even their exotic nature. We try to keep our customers informed by adding information to our website and providing brochures and info sheets to our retail customers so they are prepared to answer any questions Wells said. NOW also encourages retailers and customers to reach out directly to them with any questions or concerns regarding the product. Top Sellers Sales of essential oils have risen 70 percent at Rainbow Blossom Natural Food Markets since 2012 according to Thompson. As for NOW lavender is an old favorite and one that the company is constantly restocking. Other top sellers include eucalyptus peppermint and tea tree. Interest in aromatherapy and essential oils has increased significantly and continues to rise Wells noted. In the past few years we have seen more media coverage and celebrities talking about using essential oils which also helps drive consumer interest. Decline in interest doesn t seem to be in the future of essential oils. Instead retailers and manufacturers alike foresee a continual increase in the market. I see a bright future for Olbas Oil as consumers become more educated about high-quality healthy choices for their own wellness and the wellness of our planet Page said. The FTC cited that it is concerned that the FDA s policy on homeopathy conflicts with the FTC s requirement that medical advertising claims need to be supported by evidence. The comment describes research commissioned by the FTC s Division of Advertising Practices. This research suggests that most consumers do not understand homeopathy how the FDA regulates homeopathic drugs or the level of scientific evidence needed to support health claims for homeopathic products. The staff asks that the FDA take these findings into consideration if it decides to amend or repeal its homeopathic policy guide in the future the FTC press release stated. While the FDA has not required homeopathic products to meet the same standards that drugs do the FDA still oversees manufacturing practices. The FTC s complaint comes down to one issue makers of homeopathic drugs put claims on their labels that other drug makers and sellers of lightly regulated dietary supplements can t make without evidence. The press release from the FTC also stated given the FTC s long-standing advertising substantiation policy that health claims must be substantiated by such evidence the FDA s current regulatory framework may harm consumers and confuse advertisers. The FTC hosted a workshop on September 21 in Washington D.C. to evaluate advertising for the over-thecounter homeopathic products. The event included three panels. The first Homeopathic Industry & Advertising moderated by Mary K. NIH Study No Benefit of Omega-3 for Cognitive Decline clinical trial by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that omega-3 supplements did not slow cognitive decline in older persons. In one of the largest and longest studies of its kind 4 000 patients were followed over a five-year period. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Contrary to popular belief we didn t see any benefit of omega-3 supplements for stopping cognitive decline said Emily Chew MD deputy director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications and deputy clinical director at the National Eye Institute (NEI) part of NIH. Chew led the Age-Related Eyes Disease Study (AREDS) which was designed to investigate a combination of nutritional supplements for slowing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) a major cause of vision loss among older Americans. The study established that daily high doses of A certain antioxidants and minerals (AREDS formula) helped slow the progression to advanced AMD. A later study AREDS2 added omega-3 fatty acids to the AREDS formula. The omega-3 made no difference. We ve seen data that eating foods with omega-3 may have a benefit for eye brain and heart health Chew explained. Participants in the study had early or intermediate AMD were 72 years old on average and 58 percent were female. They were divided into four groups a placebo and three combinations of supplementation. After the five-year period the cognition scores of each subgroup taken prior to the study at two years and again at four years decreased to a similar extent over time. Results indicated that no combination of nutritional supplementation made a difference. The AREDS2 data add to our efforts to understand the relationship between dietary components and Alzheimer s disease and cognitive decline said Lenore Launer PhD senior investigator in the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Science at the National Institute on Aging. It may be for example that the timing of nutrients or consuming them in a certain dietary pattern has an impact. More research would be needed to see if dietary patterns or taking the supplements earlier in the development of diseases like Alzheimer s would make a difference. The AREDS trial is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00594672. AREDS2 is registered as NCT00345176. The results showed that the devil s claw was a different botanical species than what was labeled and what the NYAG termed a less desirable species of the herb. According to the American Botanical Council (ABC) in botanical classification and nomenclature devil s claw is usually known scientifically by its Latin name Harpagophytum procumbens where Harpagophytum is the genus of the plant and procumbens refers to the species of the plant. The DNA-barcoding tests commissioned by the NYAG showed that some herbal supplements actually contain Harpagophytum zeyheri a slightly different form of devil s claw i.e. a different but very closely related species. In effect they are like two siblings. Both species of devil s claw have a similar chemical profile said Thomas Brendler a medicinal plant expert and editor of the African Herbal Pharmacopeia a compilation of technical information of various African medicinal plants including their botany growing conditions range of habitat chemistry and traditional and modern medicinal activities and uses. O Brendler noted that while both species differ marginally in shape and chemical composition both are considered equally effective. We sincerely appreciate Attorney General Schneiderman s interest in the quality of herbal materials sold in dietary supplements and his apparent desire to help consumers maintain access to high-quality safe and effective herbal products said Mark Blumenthal founder and executive director of ABC. We here at ABC have a similar mission as evidenced by our longtime efforts in the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Program in which we have been working on educating industry and all relevant stakeholders about quality issues in the global herbal market he continued. However splitting the devil s claw genus in the very narrow way that they have done in this investigation is akin to splitting hairs--it has no real meaning or value to anyone particularly the herb consumer. Supply chain integrity is of the utmost importance to the dietary supplement industry said Steve Mister president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) in a statement. There are multiple ways to qualify the supply chain to identify ingredients and to detect adulterants in products. The companies involved should be permitted to defend their methods of ingredient testing and to justify their use of particular species of botanicals before being declared to be misbranded or adulterated by the New York attorney general. The federal law for dietary supplements requires that what s in the bottle is on the label. Proper identification of ingredients is a requirement of federal law and we expect all companies to stand behind the quality of their products Mister continued. As we have seen before investigations by the New York Attorney General s office are rarely as clear-cut as they might seem. Study Finds Association Between Reduced Vitamin D and MS Risk enetic findings support observational evidence that lower vitamin D levels are associated with increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) according to a new research article by Brent Richards from McGill University Canada and colleagues published in the journal PLOS Medicine. MS is a debilitating autoimmune disease that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. There is no known cure for MS and it usually presents between the ages of 20 and 40 years. While some observational evidence suggests there may be a link between lower vitamin D levels and MS risk it is difficult to infer a causal relationship because individuals who develop multiple sclerosis in these studies might share another unknown characteristic that increases their risk of MS (this is known as confounding). Using a genetic technique called Mendelian randomization to reduce G the possibility of confounding the authors examined whether there was an association between genetically reduced vitamin D levels (measured by the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D the clinical determinant of vitamin D status) and susceptibility to MS among participants in the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium study which involves 14 498 people with MS and 24 091 healthy controls. The authors found that a genetic decrease in the naturallog-transformed vitamin D level by one standard deviation was associated with a two-fold increased risk of MS. While the Mendelian randomization approach used by the authors largely avoids the possibility of confounding or reverse causation the reliability of these findings may be limited by some of the assumptions made by the researchers during their analysis. Nevertheless the authors concluded that genetically lowered vitamin D levels are strongly associated with increased susceptibility to MS. Whether vitamin D sufficiency can delay or prevent MS onset merits further investigation in long-term randomized controlled trials. The authors also noted ongoing randomized controlled trials are currently assessing vitamin D supplementation for the treatment and prevention of multiple sclerosis ... and may therefore provide needed insights into the role of vitamin D supplementation. Effects Of Spinach Extract On Satiety Feel Full Curb Cravings A new study found in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined how consuming the concentrated extract of thylakoids found in spinach can reduce hunger and cravings. Thylakoids encourage the release of satiety hormones which is very beneficial in slowing down fat digestion. The study examined the effect of consuming a single dose of concentrated extract of thylakoids from spinach on satiety food intake lipids and glucose compared to a placebo. Sixty people (30 males and 30 females) classified as overweight or obese took part in a double-blind randomized crossover 28 VITAMIN RETAILER study. They consumed either the spinach extract or a placebo in random order at least a week apart. Using blood samples their lipid and glucose levels were measured before a normal breakfast followed by a dose of the extract and standard lunch four hours later. After another four hours pizza was served and throughout the interval various blood tests and responses were gathered. The results showed that the spinach extract containing thylakoids increased satiety over a two-hour period compared to a placebo. There were no differences in plasma lipids and energy intake at dinner but males showed a trend toward decreased energy intake. Thylakoid consumption may influence gender-specific food cravings--in a previous study it was found that in women a reduced urge for sweets was significant after a single dose of the spinach extract and the reduced urge for sweets was sustained throughout the study. The reduction in hunger and the desire for salty food that we saw in this study might make thylakoids particularly useful for people with high blood pressure and associated weight problems summarized article co-author Frank L. Greenway MD. For more information visit www.americancollegeofnutrition.org. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com nowfoods for info about this advertiser By Lisa Schofield here are some health conditions that are totally out of our control. Take psoriasis for example. It comes about through a complex autoimmune reaction. It cannot be controlled or lessened via diet and healthy lifestyle. But there are other things that are in our control before it gets too late cholesterol weight blood pressure-- and blood sugar. Those high numbers can frequently be lowered into healthy ranges without pharmaceutical intervention. It is helpful to learn and review what factors are impacting the increasing need among consumers in your community for blood sugar support supplements--and the foods and beverages you carry that are much healthier choices than conventional counterparts. There are many potent aspects occurring in the marketplace that can and should deserve to pull a stream of consumers into your stores. According to Marty Gallant presi- T dent and founder with Marylandbased Natural Products Solutions more than 100 million Americans (one-third of the population) have been diagnosed as either pre-diabetic or with type 2 diabetes. These numbers are rising every year. As such he said there are an increasing number of studies on natural ingredients such as vitamin D magnesium chromium and cinnamon for example to find viable ingestibles to help provide healthier blood sugar profiles in all populations. Indeed Max Motyka consultant for Michigan-based Albion pointed out that the American Heart Association (AHA) recognizes metabolic syndrome as a significant concern particularly for people aged 60 and older. Further research suggests that more than 47 million Americans have metabolic syndrome a condition that has caused an uptick in type 2 diabetes pre-diabetes as well as hypertension and other cardiovascular issues. Chris Mohr PhD RD Nordic Naturals advisory board member in California cited a National Statistics Report (June 2014) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which stated that more than 29 million Americans or 9.3 percent of the population are unable to maintain healthy glucose and insulin levels. Out of that 29.1 million eight million were undiagnosed he said. This same report found that an additional 86 million people had early stages of dysfunction in blood sugar levels this number is up from 79 million in 2010. Two clear movers impacting consumer s needs for healthy blood sugar support are seen in two frightening statistical trends related Mark Kaylor founder of Georgia-based Radiant Health Project. First the projections that the treatment of diabetes alone by the year 2050 will be larger than the GNP (gross national product) as a whole. The second equally disturbing stat is the obesity rates that 30 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 have climbed for years. This is especially true for kids today who have a clinical obesity rate hovering around 33 percent. The very thought that one-third of children today are clinically obese is something that should wake every one of us up including the politicians as we go into an election year he said. Annie Eng CEO of HP Ingredients in Florida pointed to obesity and overweight issues as major health concerns to developed countries and developing nations adopting more affluent lifestyles. Overall health and quality of life are compromised by increased cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) increased triglycerides (hyperlipidemia) and high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) as a result of sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits and choices. She explained Atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD) is the leading cause of death in developed countries. It s a well-established fact that the abundance of sugar and fat in our diets is the most important risk factor in developing AVD. Excessive fat and sugar consumption linked to genetic predisposition and poor lifestyle behaviors may lead to a pathological state called metabolic syndrome. Perhaps this can also be attributed to the fact that consumers are eating up to 150 pounds per person per year of added sugars pointed out Carolyn Dean MD ND advisory board member of the Nutritional Magnesium Association. Such extreme and constant levels of added sugars stress the pancreas that makes insulin and the cell membranes that allow glucose into the cells. At any one time there are only 2 teaspoons of sugar in the blood stream. A sudden surge of 10 teaspoons into the bloodstream is a shock to the body and sets up an extra surge of insulin from the pancreas which can cause the cell membranes to become resistant to the constant barrage setting the body up for type 2 diabetes she noted. Also impacting this sector are certain misperceptions that remain held by too many consumers. Kaylor said that most individuals associate blood sugar problems only and immediately with diabetes yet we now know that imbalanced blood sugar levels are a leading contributor to aging dementia immune issues inflammation eyesight problems free radical damage and more. As such Kaylor sees the urgent need for industry to step up consumer communications explaining how food--and nutraceuticals--impact insulin release and blood sugar and how when those are impaired they will stress and impair the cardiovascular system mood vitality kidney health and general health. In the viewpoint of James B. LaValle RPh CCN one of the lesserknown problems that come with insulin resistance and diabetes is increased risk of fatty liver and I am personally seeing this more and more in practice. Fatty liver causes damage in the liver and can lead to liver failure. I still think a lot of people do not realize that insulin resistance is the primary reason for high blood pressure changes and high triglycerides and elevated cholesterol. In addition I think a lot of people don t know that diabetes is the No. 1 cause of kidney failure. Stable Nutraceuticals Researchers are beginning to understand more in depth how a variety of naturally occurring ingredients may positively impact healthy blood sugar response. Now more than ever the products they contain can be merchandized promoted and sold with complete trust in efficacy that can easily be translated to the consumer. Motyka said It is apparent from the clinical research to date that there is a micronutrient component to the epidemic of metabolic syndrome. There have been several micronutrients that have been linked to this devastating syndrome. Calcium magnesium zinc chromium and even potassium have all been examined. However as more research is done certain minerals are rising to the top of the list of possible adjuncts in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Specifically Motyka explained magnesium has potent roles in carbohydrate metabolism and decreasing serum lipids impacting blood sugar response and he noted that more Americans have at least a marginal magnesium deficiency. Summarizing research from Milagros Huerta MD he said magnesium deficiency in obese children is associated with the development of insulin resistance a deficiency they found to be the result of decreased dietary intake of magnesium. Huerta stated that Expert Food Favorites t s a food thing really. For the large majority of folks dealing with higher levels of blood sugar a change in diet for the long-term will go a long way to normalize and stabilize that number. Natural foods retailers are primed to deliver. Vitamin Retailer asked its sources what their personal favorites are when it comes to controlling their own blood sugar levels. Their responses can serve as consumer recommendations--leading to larger checkout sales Marty Gallant president and founder Natural Products Solutions There s nothing better than a well-prepared piece of grilled salmon. I enjoy grilling it outside any time of year. Salmon has a ton of health benefits but for diabetics the healthy fat can improve insulin resistance. Chris Mohr PhD RD Nordic Naturals advisory board member Watsonville CA I like a balance of I foods and nutrients at each meal meaning about a handful of a fibrous whole grain (like buckwheat oats or quinoa for example) a handful of protein (fish chicken beef etc.) and filling half the plate with veggies. This balance of nutrients can help control blood sugar since protein fat and fiber all help balance blood glucose. Further I like quality snacks. Almonds beef jerky cheese Greek yogurt cottage cheese--all with a piece of fruit--are perfect healthy snacks to help bridge the gap of hunger and control sugar levels between meals. Mark J. Kaylor founder Radiant Health Project Marietta GA My food group of choice for blood sugar-friendly foods is simply the produce aisle. Annie Eng CEO of HP Ingredients Bradenton FL When it comes to promoting healthy blood sugar with foods I like using cinnamon cayenne and drinking green tea. VITAMIN RETAILER 31 OCTOBER 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Further with the inability to control healthy blood sugar levels being one of the leading causes of cardiovascular health issues the well-known heart health benefits of omega-3 fats make them a wise choice for anyone with blood sugar issues he noted. magnesium is associated with insulin resistance and increased risk for type-2 diabetes in adults. Magnesium is an important cofactor for enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Dean agreed adding A sign of diabetes is low blood levels of magnesium. Magnesium is the basic nutrient that helps metabolize sugar assists the pancreas in producing more insulin and helps open the cell membranes to glucose. Zinc Motyka continued has been shown to help thwart insulin insensitivity and those with diabetes have a difficulty in zinc absorption and utilization and therefore require higher doses. Zinc has been seen to help glycemic control as well as lower blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein in type 2 diabetics. At the University of Michigan they have reported that in type-2 diabetics there is a protein called amylin that behaves inappropriately in diabetics and it forms dense clumps that shut down insulin producing cells which wreaks havoc on blood sugar control. Zinc has an ability to prevent this amylin malfunction. Zinc is also needed for production of insulin in pancreatic beta cells. Recent research he added showed that chronic low magnesium and zinc levels relate to low-grade inflammation which also plays a role in metabolic syndrome. Magnesium and zinc are catalysts for delta-5 and delta-6 desaturases--enzymes that help convert essential fatty acid in the antiinflammatory prostaglandins he explained. Albion specializes in supplying brand marketers with highly bioavailable forms of several key minerals that are associated with supporting blood sugar health and metabolic syndrome--magnesium zinc chromium and vanadium. Mohr said he is excited about the newer research showing the positive impact of omega-3s in supporting healthy insulin and glucose levels. 32 VITAMIN RETAILER At the University of Michigan they have reported that in type-2 diabetics there is a protein called amylin that behaves inappropriately in diabetics and it forms dense clumps that shut down insulin producing cells which wreaks havoc on blood sugar control. Some research has shown that ALA can help support peripheral nerve health making it useful for anyone who struggles to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Bergamot polyphenolic fractions found in HP Ingredients Bergamonte activates AMP kinase (AMPK) which plays a central role in regulating glucose metabolism and energy production in several different organs working as a sensor of AMP ATP levels. AMPK prevents the accumulation of fat blocks the rate-limiting step in fatty acid synthesis and augments fatty acid oxidation. AMPK activation increases intracellular glucose uptake which leads to the activation of the glucose transporter GLUT1 in all cells and translocation GLUT4 to the muscle cells. HP Ingredients Eng reported has three published human clinicals on Bergamonte showing significant improvements not only in blood sugar response levels but related cardio metabolic activity as well such as cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The most recent study published in Advances in Biological Chemistry April 2014 107 individuals with metabolic syndrome received either placebo or 650 mg of Bergamonte twice daily for 120 days. The Bergamonte group showed significant reduction in fasting plasma glucose of 17 percent serum LDL-C and triglycerides and increase in HDL-C. Moreover a significant reduction of small dense LDL particles and reduction in ultrasonographic and metabolic biomarkers of NAFLD suggests a potential preventive role of bergamot derivatives in reducing cardio metabolic risk. For LaValle Phase 2 white bean extract is on the top of my list for natural products that can help people to manage their intake of high-glycemicload foods. Repeatedly we see in practice that lower carb diets can help with weight loss and blood sugar disturbances. The problem he said is that most people cannot maintain a low-carb diet. This can be due to stress and sleep disturbances that cause increased cravings and hunger and other causes that basically make you more inefficient at making energy. When you become less efficient your body calls for more fuel (food). Phase 2 white bean extract blocks carbohydrate absorption without losing the absorption of other nutrients from food. This has several benefits first it lowers the glycemic burden of carbohydrates by about 60 percent. That means less blood glucose spike after meals less insulin release and less vascular damage. Secondly because the starch does not break down it is delivered to the lower intestine where it feeds the beneficial bacteria. When gut flora obtain enough nutrients they are able to promote production of gut hormones that regulate appetite satiety and glucose control. Our understanding of the market suggests older adults don t want to prevent aging as much as they want to ensure that they remain as active and independent as possible while they grow older Shastri noted. There s even greater interest in products that might help improve a person s quality of life for example by helping them maintain a healthy functioning heart supporting good memory or protecting against health conditions that limit the independence people want to maintain in the later years of their life. And it should come as no surprise that anti-aging and longevity are the subjects of intense research in many fields including genetics food and nutrition and pharmaceutical development he added. C Ingredient Innovation A new class of supplements is leading the way on the anti-aging market. Recent scientific advances have transformed previously indigestible substances into highly bioactive supplements said Tim Mount CN CCMH director of education with Californiabased NeoCell. This revolution started with the discovery of hydrolyzing collagen a process that breaks down tough collagen proteins and allows it to absorb through the digestive tract and stimulate new collagen production at the cellular level. NeoCell s best-selling Super Collagen line of products was America s first collagen supplement and still leads the anti-aging category he said. A similar discovery occurred with keratin the main protein in hair which stimulates the growth of new hair in a way never before possible. NeoCell takes advantage of this new ingredient in Keratin Hair Volumizer. New extraction techniques and refinement processes have also allowed for the concentration of nutrients at unprecedented levels Mount continued. In the past whole leaves berries and roots were ground into a powder and sold as a nutritional supplement but contained bulky fibrous material and inactive substances that contributed little to the effectiveness of the product. Nowadays we are able to isolate specific compounds and deliver more powerful health promoting nutrients in smaller doses. Turmeric is a perfect example. The health benefits of this spice have been known for centuries but only recently have we isolated curcuminoids from turmeric to make it significantly more powerful and convenient. The smaller nature of these extracts also allow for innovative delivery systems. The extra space available in the formula allows for flavorings so people can look forward to their supplements such as in NeoCell s Biotin Bursts soft chews. When scoping out new supplement products it appears that trends lie in offering more palatable and appealing ways to ingest the ingredients gummies chews beverages and more agreed Michael Olinde president of Avie Nutraceuticals in Louisiana. The good news here is that there are quite a few consumers who are seeking to live healthier through a customized supplement regimen and who dislike swallowing so many pills. The diversity of tasty delivery systems greatly helps in adding more targeted supplements to one s daily routine. It is also becoming clear that customers are looking for products that contain ingredients with proven benefits to promote their health. Antioxidants Plus Shastri pointed out that studies have shown that ubiquinol levels are signifi- 34 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 cantly diminished by aging compromised health states or high oxidative stress. This is partially explained by a diminished ability to convert ( reduce ) ubiquinone to ubiquinol with increasing age. Much of this research has also shown that the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 promotes healthy aging in various ways and helps prevent damage caused by oxidative stress (which is increased among older adults). For instance ubiquinol protects the mitochondria from oxidative damage thereby protecting the integrity of mitochondrial DNA Shastri said. Excess mitochondrial DNA damage is thought to be one of many complex factors involved in premature aging. Because ubiquinol is readily available in the body--unlike the conventional ubiquinone form of CoQ10--it is also better absorbed for use to support a person s heart and vascular health. Amy Pereira national educator with Enzymedica in Florida noted that while antioxidants have been and will continue to be a formidable approach in healthy aging there are numerous additional supplements that can play a strong role in supporting a graceful aging process. Formulas containing ingredients like blueberries green tea carnosine vitamin D3 resveratrol glutathione broccoli seed extract rhodiola astragalus SOD and catalase may confer great benefits. Additionally some research indicates that the synergistic effects of combinations of ingredients may far exceed the benefits of the individual ingredients alone. For example Pereira said a leading university research team discovered that the whole significantly exceeds the sum of the parts when it comes to the synergy among blueberries green tea carnosine and vitamin D3. In fact the synergy among these ingredients was actually so impressive that a patent was secured for a specific blend of these ingredients now known as NT-020. The team s data indicates that NT-020 is capable of improving healthy adult stem cell populations in a way that is superior to the individual ingredients effects upon stem cell populations. Innovative formulas that utilize science-backed ingredient blends like the patented NT-020 and antioxidant enzymes SOD and catalase in Enzymedica s Stem XCell may promote the growth and health of stem cells encourage efficient cell renewal and offer antioxidant support Pereira noted. Many individual antioxidant nutrients are touted for the role they may play in longevity but a 2009 study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that women who regularly took a multivitamin had longer telomeres which are associated with youth whereas shorter telomeres are linked with aging and disease said Marci Clow MS RDN at California-based Rainbow Light. However not all multivitamins are created equal she added. I recommend looking for a multi like Rejuvenage from Rainbow Light which is based on researched nutrient potencies and includes other potentially anti-aging ingredients. Longevity and Inflammation There are so many products claiming to slow the aging process and those who see their appearance fading or feel their health declining are inclined to believe what they hear noted Clow. The fact is that aging is inevitable and many of the products available will give you little more than an empty wallet. That being said there is suggestive evidence that some of the ingredients being touted as anti-aging may suppress free radical and inflammatory reactions that have been linked to the aging process. So as far as what I believe to be the most innovative I would tend to steer toward products targeted for being anti-inflammatory as there is evidence to support inflammation as a common factor in many chronic conditions exacerbated by the aging process Clow continued. Turmeric which is the spice that gives much Middle Eastern food its yellow color has been used as a spice and traditional medicine for thousands of years Clow explained adding that turmeric contains a compound called curcumin which has in more recent years been extensively studied for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Although widely available in supplements curcumin may not be too well absorbed so look for products such as Theramend from Rainbow Light which utilizes a patented extract studied for bioavailability plus other targeted ingredients she suggested. Avie Nutraceuticals is founded on the proven significant human health benefits of turmeric curcumin said Olinde. Avie has produced a unique water-soluble formulation to improve absorption and bioavailability based on its proprietary ultramicronization technology he said. Avie s products are also unique because they are designed to target specific conditions. As a result Avie s products contain only a few ingredients proven to promote and support healthy cells. The company s high-potency Joint Balance contains a combination of Avie s proprietary water-soluble Ultramicronized Turmeric Curcumin and Boswellia to help support joint mobility and flexibility. Clinical studies have shown that this combination of curcumin and boswellia relieves joint discomfort and increases walking distance similar to prescription drugs Olinde noted. Curcumin also relieves aching and muscle stiffness and promotes recovery after exercise. Older people are increasingly leading an active lifestyle and they need products that provide the benefits that do not cause the side-effects that are seen with prescription drugs he said. The company s Gastrointestinal Balance product supports healthy digestion by providing an environment that can lessen bouts of age-related occasional indigestion and gastrointestinal discomfort Olinde added. Gastrointestinal Balance contains a combination of natural herbal ingredients (Avie s proprietary water-soluble Ultramicronized Turmeric Curcumin and DGL licorice) that can relieve gastrointestinal discomfort and indigestion. It also supports healthy liver and promotes healthy immune response. Michael T. Murray ND director of product science and innovation with Washington-based Natural Factors Nutritional Products Inc. added the growing amount of evidence that smoldering inflammation plays a big role in accelerated aging and the development of age-related health conditions. One product that is particularly interesting in fighting this sort of inflammation is Celadrin a mixture of cetylated esterifed fatty acids that modify inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins leukotrienes and cytokines Murray said. One of the actions of Celadrin is its ability to enhance cell membrane health and integrity. As a result it halts the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. It also reduces the production of the negative immune factors like IL-6 that play a central role in inflammation. Though Celadrin has shown impressive clinical effects in improving joint health its use VITAMIN RETAILER 35 OCTOBER 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Seniors Super in fighting against the effects of aging may extend far beyond simply helping aging joints he said. Telomeres As previously mentioned telomeres are a factor to consider in the graceful aging equation as telomere health is also related to healthy cells according to Pereira. She explained that telomeres are the protective end caps within the chromosomes of cells that help minimize degradation of critically important DNA genetic material. With each cell division or replication DNA must be divided. To minimize loss of important genetic material telomeres help donate of themselves in order to preserve the more critical internal DNA. An enzyme called telomerase is known to manage the length of the telomeres and supplements designed to support telomerase activity may help us manage important cell resources Pereira said. Numerous testing methods are available to monitor an individual s telomere length which is considered an indication of cell health. Lifestyle practices (like poor diet environmental toxins and stress) can reduce telomerase activity and telomere length. While it is wise to manage stress levels and mood get adequate physical activity avoid cigarette smoke exposure maintain healthy weight and avoid environmental toxins innovational techniques are being employed to build formulas that enhance telomerase activity and support the body s ability to protect its telomeres Pereira noted. Enzymedica s Telomere Plus includes yet another synergistic blend of (D3 astragalus broccoli seed extract and rhodiola) that was found to increase telomerase activity. Enzymedica s Telomerin blend is specially formulated to positively influence telomerase and cell vitality. PQQ serves as a cofactor for a special class of enzymes involved in cellular function including cellular growth development differentiation and survival he explained. Without PQQ our cells would cease to function properly. One key action of PQQ involves a direct action on key enzymes involved in the energy producing compartments in our cells--the mitochondria. As a result PQQ improves energy production. In addition PQQ s powerful antioxidant effect protects against mitochondrial damage. But PQQ not only protects mitochondria from oxidative stress--it also promotes the spontaneous generation of new mitochondria within aging cells a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis or mitochondriogenesis. This effect is a fountain of youth for mitochondrial function. People between the ages of 45 and 64 remain reliable supplement users with distinct interest in gut health cardiovascular health and sustained energy. --Sid Shastri Product Development Manager Kaneka Nutrients Given the nutritional importance and tremendous span of physiological effects of PQQ there are considerable benefits in conditions that revolve around low mitochondrial function including aging many brain and neurological diseases (e.g. Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease) and many other chronic degenerative diseases. Current research has primarily focused on its ability to protect memory and cognition in both aging animals and humans Murray noted. In addition preliminary clinical studies are extremely encouraging and several larger clinical trials are currently either completed waiting publication or are in process. In regard to improving brain function Murray added while PQQ is somewhat effective on its own when it is combined with CoQ10 even better results have been shown. Here lies another endorsement for combination products. We re aware of several innovative supplement companies that have started to combine the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 with other ingredients thought to have complementary health and aging benefits Shastri added. For example we re seeing brand holders introduce ubiquinol products that are combined with fish oil resveratrol or PQQ. These are interesting combinations that seek to address seniors interest in cardiovascular health and vitality. In addition there is growing interest in novel formats such as gummies and other forms outside of soft gels. It s important to acknowledge that in meeting the needs of older adults long term success for supplement companies will come from tying their products to an overall healthy lifestyle as opposed to following the latest supplement fad. This is an often skeptical consumer segment that isn t afraid of aging so much as they are concerned about aging well. The Buyers Seniors Shastri said are interested in any product that can help them feel (but not necessarily look) younger and that help them remain active and independent for as long as possible. Physical or cognitive decline is a pervasive concern among those over the age of 65. He added that people between the ages of 45 and 64 remain reliable supplement users with distinct interest in gut health cardiovascular health and sustained energy. While Baby Boomers tend to drive the market and are largely seeking products designed to protect cell health and support graceful aging these products are not only for older individuals Pereira said. More and more men and women in their 30s and 40s are becoming interested in putting their health in the front seat and being proactive on the aging front. Increased recognition that what you put into your body is as important as what you slather on it abounds so we are seeing greater amounts of interest in working to support health both internally and externally. PQQ PQQ (short for pyrroloquinoline quinone) is a relatively new dietary supplement on the market that looks to be the perfect answer to diminishing brain function associated with aging said Murray. 36 VITAMIN RETAILER Recommendations to Retailers With so many dietary supplement options on store shelves hands down the single most important role of a supplement retailer is educating its consumers about the products it sells and WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com pni for info about this advertiser Seniors Super helping them distinguish marketing hyperbole from scientific research said Shastri. Some of the ingredients in a product such as the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 have been thoroughly researched with scientific consensus around its benefits but an informed retailer will know that while ubiquinol may be ideal for someone over the age of 40 conventional CoQ10 may be a fine option for a much younger person. I think it s also critical to help consumers understand a product s supply chain Shastri added. Buying a product that is sourced by trusted ingredient manufacturers with great quality controls and best-in-class traceability is so important. Consumers need their retailer to help teach them about why these things are important. Olinde suggested that retailers segment within each condition-specific cat- egory. Match the customer s demographic and concern with the most appropriate brand and product. The beauty of this industry is that there are numerous brand marketers for each category--let s say joint health. Within joint health there are products focusing on connective tissue health appropriate for those whose careers are physically demanding or fitness enthusiasts while others are focusing on comfort appropriate for those already experiencing stiffness and aching. Lastly Clow stressed that retailers proceed with caution when marketing selling any dietary supplements. Discussions about a product s benefits should be limited to what is listed on the label or in the manufacturer s printed material both of which should already be within the scope of the law and substantiated with credible scientific evidence by the manufacturer she said. A good review for all retailers is to check out the Roadmap for Retailers published by the Council for Responsible Nutrition. VR pounds. Rejuvenation Res 10 173-178. Lindsey J. Mcgill N. Lindsey L. By improving the cells response to insulin you are getting at a root cause of much of the imbalance he explained. As cells become more responsive to insulin the pancreas does not need to over-secrete insulin the cells take up more blood sugar and burn it as fuel and less sugar is left in circulation to turn to body fat. By Cara Waters about the importance of preventive health regarding their urinary tracts and in the case of men their reproductive organs. The most common urologic concerns people appear to be seeking natural support for include incontinence bladder health urinary tract infections (UTIs) and prostate issues (enlarged prostate prostatitis and cystitis). According to Stacey Littlefield lead product formulator at Illinois-based Redd Remedies Many women are seeking natural alternatives for urinary tract infections and incontinence both of which are very common problems for women. For men the largest urologic health issue remains associated with prostate health and the effects of an enlarged prostate on the urinary tract system. Incontinence and other bladder issues are big noted Myers. I think you can tell in part where the market is headed regarding natural products and supplements when you see a lot of pharmaceutical companies advertising their drugs for these same concerns she said. L et s face it--incontinence urinary tract infections and prostates are uncomfortable subjects--so awkward in fact that many do not seek help from their physicians for urologic health issues. Yet Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at Wisconsin-based EuroPharma revealed All told urinary incontinence--due to a variety of causes--affects at least 25 million Americans. Most of the sufferers are women but one-third of women and men 30 to 70 years old have experienced some symptoms of urinary incontinence. 1 Ron Antriasian vice president of sales and business development for Life Extension in Florida commented on the reluctance to discuss the subject. Urological issues are typically associated with an older audience and in the case of reproductive issues men tend to be less willing to discuss such topics even with a health professional he said. Therefore individuals tend to be more reactive in their approach to urological issues than to other categories. That said both men and women are increasingly becoming more educated 40 VITAMIN RETAILER Low Visibility Steady Market The unwillingness to publicly discuss urologic health may be keeping it out of the limelight of natural product discussions but the market continues to be a steady one. Depending on the source said Antriasian the global urology health products market is estimated to be between three to five billion dollars annually. Unlike some other categories such as cardiovascular health and weight loss the urology market is not what one would typically describe as a high visibility market. Myers has found that The market is quite large and I think you ll probably find that while most of the customers are generally in the [Baby] Boomer generation and above there is a wide range of individuals who have urologic health issues. In fact about one in four women over the age of 18 have overactive bladder issues and once men reach 60 years old there is a 50 percent chance they will have to deal with the symptoms of an enlarged prostate she said. Another reason the market is growing is due to the rising concern over the side effects of some prescribed drugs Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2015 associated with treatment of bladder conditions. This is leading consumers to turn toward more natural solutions. Myers explained Individuals have been seeking natural interventions for bladder issues due to the concern by many integrative practitioners that the common drugs (anticholinergic class of drugs) used for these problems is creating higher risks for dementia in addition to the many adverse effects associated with their use. In Alzheimer s disease there is a significant drop in levels of an important neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. You need choline to make this neurotransmitter. Anticholinergic drugs block the activity of choline which has caused concern among many individuals in natural health. The ability to reduce these symptoms without blocking choline is considered a great step forward and I think that also opens up a tremendous opportunity to provide a better answer. 2 been two of the big ingredients for a long time in this general category. Saw palmetto works via hormonal pathways to stabilize prostate enlargement to reduce pressure on the bladder. Cranberry is well accepted for prevention or treatment of UTIs but does not improve bladder capacity and does not quiet the over-firing nerves in an overactive bladder. Additionally urological products have typically been divided into women s and men s categories which doesn t always address the heart of bladder concerns which in many instances are common to both. Incontinence and Bladder Health For bladder health Life Extension offers Water-Soluble Pumpkin Seed Extract marketed primarily for women although the product is not gender-specific noted Smith. As to its benefits Laboratory and human clinical studies demonstrate the ingestion of water-soluble pumpkin seed extract can significantly improve the structural support of the bladder and the function of the sphincter muscle he said. EuroPharma s SagaPro Bladder health supplement for both men and women launched in April 2013 and utilizes a unique clinically studied extract of Angelica archangelica known as Arctic Angelica for support of bladder strength and capacity. This angelica grows in Iceland and is not the same as Chinese angelica (Angelica sinensis) which is otherwise known as dong quai clarified Myers. This product is a favorite in Iceland for bladder health overactive bladder nocturia adult bedwetting and stress incontinence she said. As a proprietary aqueous extract of Angelica archangelica leaves--crafted from wild-harvested plants that have the good fortune to grow in the pure air of Iceland--it is like no other product offering available. Icelandic Angelica archangelica has anti-inflammatory activity via a very specific pathway in the bladder that results in overproduction of leukotrienes Myers continued. While this is not the same kind of inflammation as occurs in arthritis or twisted ankles or sunburns it still damages bladder strength and nerves that transmit bladder signals. By reducing leukotrienes Arctic Angelica can stop this cycle. More specifically The isoquercitrin Cranberry Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin Seeds In response to consumer demand manufacturers are focusing their natural product formulations for urologic health on three main target areas bladder health (including incontinence) for men and women urinary tract--primarily for women--but which can also be used by men and prostate health for men with additional support for bladder and urethra. Cranberry saw palmetto and pumpkin seed have traditionally been utilized as key active ingredients in many urologic health products. However manufacturers are continuing to research and add in new combinations of ingredients--evolving and optimizing their formulations. Michael A. Smith MD senior health scientist at Life Extension summarized the general approach to this class of products. For prostate health the classics are lignans boswellia nettle root saw palmetto pumpkin seed beta-sitosterol flower pollen pygeum boron and lycopene he noted. Some of them block DHT and estrogen production while others are antioxidants and antiinflammatories. For bladder and urethra health pumpkin seeds strengthen sphincter muscles while cranberry extract has antimicrobial activity. Further insight was provided by Myers who added Cranberry extracts for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and saw palmetto for prostate enlargement have content in Iceland s Arctic Angelica may be at least partly responsible for its effectiveness suggested Myers. Isoquercitrin can inhibit the activity of leukotrienes (LTD4) in the bladder and urethra that stimulate receptors which trigger overactive bladder contractions. This is important because if these nerves are compromised in any way they affect bladder sensations. For instance if they are irritated they send erroneous signals about the need to void sending you to the bathroom more than you need. On the other hand if the nerves are damaged you may not realize you need to go until it is too late. Aside from improving bladder strength and capacity this extract makes bathroom trips more productive improving the ability to fully empty the bladder she added. A published study on Angelica archangelica demonstrated improvements for male users with reduced bladder capacity. In a published study men with reduced bladder capacity found that the same Angelica archangelica available in SagaPro Bladder Health significantly improved their ability to hold urine Myers stated. In fact it tripled the time to first awakening to use the bathroom and reduced the nocturnal awakenings for urination by 50 percent. What s interesting about this extract is that the action of Angelica archangelica was not on the prostate but on improving bladder strength said Myers. Additionally Myers continued the Angelica archangelica extract was very well tolerated and showed no hormonal effects or unwanted side effects like increased blood pressure or heart rate or reduced libido. That s a definite difference from many prescription drugs3. Urinary Tracts and UTIs Cranberry juice has long been associated with urinary tract health. Now manufacturers such as Redd Remedies and Life Extension are supplementing cranberry with additional effective ingredients such as probiotics D-mannose and Ellirose. Redd Remedies offers a product that focuses on urinary tract infections named UT Soothe with Probiotics. UT Soothe with Probiotics combines food-based ingredients including D-mannose a VITAMIN RETAILER 41 OCTOBER 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Urologic Health Natural Support for Men and Women fruit-based blend including cranberry blueberry tart cherry and other fruits and a shelf-stable probiotic Bacillus coagulans said Littlefield. UT Soothe is designed to be used both acutely and preventively for people who struggle with the occasional or recurring urinary tract issues. Because our formula does not contain potentially irritating diuretics or uva ursi it is safe for both adults and children. The incorporated Healthy Urinary Tract Blend offers individuals a broader spectrum of support than cranberry alone against multiple types of bacteria that can cause urinary tract problems she added. It is not formulated for a specific gender. The anatomy of the female urinary tract differs greatly from men resulting in the need for additional nutritional support for women reported Smith. Life Extension has combined cranberry with Ellirose a unique compound available overseas but little known in the United States that provides a synergistic complement to the whole cranberry s phytonutrient profile said Antriasian. This ingredient can be found in the Optimized Cran-Max Cranberry Whole Fruit Concentrate with Ellirose product designed to promote urinary tract health. How do the cranberry and Ellirose complement each other A wealth of published studies indicates that cranberry polyphenols may help to support a healthy urinary tract said Smith. Of particular importance is the flavonoid content of the cranberry including anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins. These natural compounds exert powerful antioxidant effects that can reduce oxidative stress. Recent clinical data suggest that the proanthocyanidins found only in cranberries also possess unique molecular features that specifically promote urinary system health. Ellirose explained Antriasian is derived from Hibiscus sabdariffa a species native to Europe Asia and Africa. Scientific analysis has shown that this species flower and calyx (the green 42 VITAMIN RETAILER floral envelope surrounding the blossom) are rich in active polyphenols including flavonoids sambubiosides and anthocyanins. Men s Prostate Health Plus While saw palmetto and pumpkin seed have been notably linked to prostate health a number of new products are hitting the market with ingredients such as Boswellia flower pollen nettle Pygeum beta-sitosterol and others which when used in combination support the healthy function of the prostate plus bladder and urethra in men. EuroPharma s Healthy Prostate product provides clinically studied BosPure Boswellia saw palmetto nettle pine phytosterols (standardized to contain 70 to 80 percent beta-sitosterol) and sesamin from sesame seed extract revealed Myers. The boswellia extract we use is unique she said. It is screened to reduce beta-boswellic acid--an inflammatory compound which often remains in unstandardized boswellia--and has higher levels of AKBA (acetyl-1 1keto-beta-boswellic acid) its key compound for promoting cellular health. For men s health and prostate health specifically testosterone and dihydrotestosterone need to be in proper balance for healthy prostate function and proper urinary flow. The reason you see saw palmetto as such a common men s supplement ingredient is because it helps support a healthy balance of these hormones and protects prostate cells she added. Life Extension has a number of men s products on the market including Triple Strength ProstaPollen Ultra Natural Prostate PalmettoGuard Saw Palmetto Nettle Root Formula with Beta-Sitosterol and Mega Lycopene. The products contain research-supported ingredients for prostate urethral and bladder health said Smith. What is unique about the products and their formulations Smith shared that Clinical studies have demonstrated that the flower pollen extracts in Triple Strength ProstaPollen provide healthy support for aging prostate glands. Two fractions in Triple Strength ProstaPollen--G60 (water-soluble) and NAX (lipidsoluble) --support prostate health by helping to maintain smooth muscle tone in the prostate bladder and urethra he said. The Ultra Natural Prostate formula has been upgraded numerous times so that is contains the most scientifically substantiated nutrients to help protect the prostate gland and maintain its health function advised Antriasian. He noted some of key ingredients and their effects as follows Standardized lignans from flax seed and Norway spruce knotwood convert to enterolactone in the intestine which is then absorbed into the bloodstream to provide support for prostate cells against excess estrogen levels. Apr sFlex an extract of Boswellia supports normal inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase or 5-LOX an enzyme that is associated with undesirable cell division changes. Saw palmetto extract helps inhibit dihydrotestosterone (DHT) activity in the prostate and helps inhibit alpha-adrenergic receptor activity (to support normal urinary flow). Pygeum (Pygeum africanum) extract helps suppress prostaglandin production in the prostate and supports healthy urination patterns. Graminex Flower Pollen Extract a European pollen extract that has been shown to help relax the smooth muscles of the urethra and help regulate inflammatory reactions. According to Smith there are 11 active research-supported ingredients in this formulation which in addition to the above also include lycopene boron beta-sitosterol and phospholipids. The PalmettoGuard Saw Palmetto Nettle Root Formula with Beta-Sitosterol product combines saw palmetto with a nettle root extract boron and rosemary to support a healthy prostate. Emerging Research Discoveries When asked about new studies Littlefield directed attention to recent research on antioxidant complexes found in food and their potential benefits with regard to urologic health. Much of the current research on natural ingredients and urologic health is centered around the benefits of the antioxidant complexes found in foods particularly fruits. By Gene Bruno MS MHS ore than any other time during life pregnancy is a time when the mother-to-be should be adhering to sound nutritional principles and eating a healthy diet both to nourish herself and her unborn child. Unfortunately morning sickness can often make it difficult to eat and to keep down food--let alone healthy food. This article will provide some background information on morning sickness and then examine safe and natural strategies for reducing its symptoms including the use of protein vitamin B6 and ginger. M sea can affect pregnant women at any time of day.1 Causes What causes morning sickness isn t clear but the hormonal changes of pregnancy are thought to play a role.2 This may include an increase in the circulating level of the estrogen and or an increase in progesterone which relaxes the muscles in the uterus to prevent early childbirth but may also relax the stomach and intestines leading to excess stomach acids and gastroesophageal reflux.3 Another consideration is gastric slow wave dysrhythmia. Most of the time the stomach exhibits rhythmic electrical depolarizations or slow waves that control gastric motor function. In some situations nausea may be associated with altered gastric motility and disturbances in slow wave rhythm in which cycling is too rapid (tachygastria) or too slow (bradygastria). Research has shown that women with first trimester nausea exhibit slow wave dysrhythmias that resolve after delivery.4 In contrast asymptomatic pregnant women show no rhythm disruptions.5 Whatever the cause morning sickness is an extremely common occurrence. Prevalence Research from different sources indicate that about 70-80 percent of women suffer some form of morning sickness in the first trimester of pregnancy while about 24 percent of women experience morning sickness in late pregnancy.6 7 Some research suggest that there are racial differences with a greater prevalence of morning sickness in Caucasians the least prevalence in Asians and other races somewhere in between.8 These differences in prevalence may or may not be associated with be associated with differences in dietary practices.9 Symptoms Morning sickness is characterized by nausea with or without vomiting. It is most common during the first trimester sometimes beginning as early as two weeks after conception. Symptoms range from mild nausea (often accompanied by aversions to certain foods) to frequent vomiting and hyperemesis (severe and prolonged vomiting). Despite its name the nau44 VITAMIN RETAILER Protein To help treat pregnancy-related nausea obstetricians have commonly recommend ingestion of solid carbohydrate WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 meals such as soda crackers although this recommendation is based primarily on anecdotal reports. Jednak et al10 conducted a study testing the roles of meal composition and caloric content on nausea and slow wave rhythm in 14 nauseated pregnant women. The results demonstrated that protein-predominant meals reduced nausea and dysrhythmic activity to greater degrees than equicaloric carbohydrate and fat meals and noncaloric meals (P 0.05). Meal consistency did not affect symptom responses although liquid meals decreased dysrhythmias more than solids (P 0.05). Researchers concluded that protein meals selectively reduced nausea and gastric slow wave dysrhythmias in first trimester pregnancy. Note Although the following study was not conducted in pregnant women it is nonetheless worth reviewing since it dealt with nausea caused by gastric tachygastria which is the same etiology of nausea in pregnancy. To determine the types of meal that are most effective in preventing the development of gastric tachygastria nausea and the symptoms of motion sickness provoked by a rotating optokinetic drum Levine et al11 conducted a comparative study in which 18 healthy men and women (15 women three men age range 18-20 years) received a carbohydrate beverage a protein-predominant beverage (53 percent protein from whey protein powder 12 percent carbohydrate and 35 percent fat) or nothing immediately before exposure to the rotating drum. Subjective symptoms of motion sickness and electrogastrograms were collected during a six-min baseline period and a subsequent 16min drum rotation period. Results showed that total scores for subjective measures of nausea and motion sickness (SSMS) scores were significantly lower during the protein condition than during both the carbohydrate condition (P 0.03) and the no-meal condition (P 0.001). The difference in total SSMS scores between the carbohydrate and no meal conditions was not statistically significant. In conclusion liquid proteinpredominant meals were most effective in suppressing both the development of gastric tachygastria and the entire spectrum of motion sickness symptoms including nausea. Vitamin B6 First referenced in 1942 for treating nausea of morning sickness 12 the mechanism of action for how vitamin B6 affects nausea is unknown. Nevertheless research has demonstrated that it can be efficacious for this purpose. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study 13 342 women who were in their 17th week of pregnancy or earlier received 30 mg of vitamin B6 daily or a placebo. Patients graded the severity of their nausea and recorded the number of vomiting episodes over the previous 24 hours before treatment and again during five consecutive days on treatment. Results showed that there was a significant decrease in nausea scores in the vitamin B6 group compared to the placebo group (P 0.0008). There was also a trend toward a greater reduction in the number of vomiting episodes. The researchers concluded that vitamin B6 is effective in relieving the severity of nausea in early pregnancy. In a single-blind placebo-controlled study 14 1 000 women used a multivitamin providing 2.6 mg day of vitamin B6 or placebo starting at least one month before conception. In women who became pregnant interviews with researchers during pregnancy revealed that those taking placebo had significantly higher incidence of nausea during the first trimester than those taking multivitamin (p 0.01). The fact that the multivitamin supplement provided a variety of vitamins and minerals means that the vitamin B6 cannot be definitively said to have been the sole nutrient helping to reduce nausea. However in consideration of the previously two cited studies it seems likely that the vitamin B6 played a major contributing role. In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study 15 59 pregnant women received 25 mg of vitamin B6 every eight hours or a placebo for 72 hours. Twelve of 31 patients in the vitamin B6 group had severe nausea before treatment as did 10 of 28 patients in the placebo group. Following vitamin B6 therapy there was a significant reduction in nausea in those with severe nausea compared to those using a placebo (P 0.01). Fifteen of 31 vitamin B6-treated patients had vomiting before therapy and after three days of therapy only eight of 31 patients in the vitamin B6 group had any vomiting--while there was no difference in the placebo group (P 0.05). It should also be noted that based on the results of several studies the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends taking vitamin B6 supplements under a doctor s care for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.16 Ginger A significant body of research exists showing that supplemental ginger is effective in treating morning sickness. For the purposes of this article therefore a discussion of studies will be limited to reviews and meta-analyses that cover multiple studies. In a 2015 review 17 nine studies and seven reviews that investigated ginger for morning sickness postoperative nausea and vomiting chemotherapyinduced and antiretroviral-induced nausea and vomiting. All studies reported that ginger provided a significant reduction in nausea and vomiting. A 2014 meta-analysis18 examined six studies where a total of 508 pregnant women were randomly assigned to receive ginger and placebo. The results were that the use of about 1 g day of ginger for at least four days was associated with a five-fold likelihood of improvement in nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy (i.e. morning sickness). A 2013 systematic review19 investigated four randomized controlled trials to examine the evidence for the safety and effectiveness of ginger in morning sickness. The results were that all trials found orally administered ginger to be significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the frequency of vomiting and intensity of nausea. The researchers concluded that best available evidence suggests that ginger is a safe and effective treatment for pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting. In addition ginger has been reported to be one of the best forms of treatment in hyperemesis gravidarum a severe form of morning sickness.20 21 Conclusion At the very least morning sickness is an unpleasant experience. Safe and effective treatments including the use of protein vitamin B6 and ginger are worth considering to help reduce symptoms. VR References 1 Pepper GV Roberts SC. One natural ingredient is Xanthoceras sorbifolia bunge plant which is a flowering tree grown in Northern China. In Hong Kong it s used as a dietary supplement. Initial studies look very promising. A specialized herbal formula called Urox is also being studied. Flower pollen for noninfectious prostatitis is also a hot issue he concluded. Where is the market headed and which particular applications will the market continue to expand in Littlefield said that For women specifically the demand for natural support for incontinence will continue to grow. For men there will remain a steady demand for prostate health products. According to Myers Obviously there s always going to be a market for women s urological health supplements especially concerning urinary tract infections which typically occur more frequently in women and men s prostate support supplements. As for what retailers can expect going forward Myers comment was I have no doubt that new research will continue and that new botanicals or new combinations of well-known botanicals will be released. It will be fascinating to see which directions urologic health products take as our overall knowledge base expand. I think they ll see products that while they may have the same ingredients differentiate themselves in delivery systems research or concentration. And no doubt there will continue to be many product offerings that are specifically for men or women she added. With regard to overall market evolution I anticipate a slow steady growth to this market predicted Antriasian. Again because urological issues attract such limited attention in discussions regarding overall health--cardio cognitive glucose management weight management and other categories attract far more attention--it is incumbent upon the individual to take the initiative to educate him herself on this niche category. By Mark Becker he thyroid a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck can have a dramatic impact on a wide range of bodily functions. It is made up of two halves called lobes that lie along the windpipe (trachea) and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue known as the isthmus. Thyroid hormones help all the organs work well. They control how the body uses food for energy. Thyroid function is often an overlooked area of health. Retailers can truly separate themselves by employing staff who understand thyroid health. They can further separate themselves by dedicating sections to products that promote thyroid health. According to The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists at least 30 million Americans have a thyroid disorder and half or 15 million suffer in silence and are undiagnosed.1 Furthermore women especially those over 35 are as much as 10 times as likely as men to have a thyroid problem. Thyroid hormones impact metabolism including how fast or slow the brain heart muscles liver and other T parts of the body work. Simply put if the body works too fast or too slow it just won t feel right. For example if you don t have enough thyroid hormone you might feel tired and cold. Or if you have too much thyroid hormone you might feel nervous or hot. The thyroid is controlled by the pituitary gland a pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. The pituitary gland constantly checks the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood. It then communicates to the thyroid to make more or less hormone so the body will operate at peak efficiency. The estimates vary but approximately 10 million Americans have hypothyroidism a condition where the body does not produce sufficient thyroid hormone. Women especially those older than 60 are more likely to have hypothyroidism. This condition upsets the normal balance of chemical reactions in the body. It seldom causes symptoms in the early stages but over time untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems including obesity joint pain infertility and heart dis- ease. Symptoms of underactive thyroid include Fatigue Sensitivity to cold Weight gain Constipation Depression Slow movements and thoughts Muscle aches and weakness Muscle cramps Dry and scaly skin Brittle hair and nails Low sex drive Pain numbness and a tingling sensation in the hand and fingers Irregular or heavy periods Interestingly the thyroid gland can also be overactive and make excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone. This is known as hyperthyroidism. When the thyroid gland is overactive the body s processes speed up and you may experience the following among other symptoms Nervousness Anxiety Rapid heartbeat Hand tremors Excessive sweating Weight loss 50 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 Sleeplessness Hypothyroidism Retailers need to understand how nutrient intake impacts the thyroid and they need to stock their shelves with functional foods and dietary supplements that will normalize thyroid activity. Many people with hypothyroidism experience intense fatigue and brain fog which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. People with hypothyroidism must avoid sugar and caffeine as well as refined carbohydrates including white flour which the body treats like sugar. Retailers should recommend the following for those with hypothyroidism Address adrenal fatigue There is a significant connection between the thyroid and adrenal glands. That said it s uncommon to have hypothyroidism without some level of adrenal fatigue. Be aware of goitrogens These are substances that suppress the function of the thyroid gland by interfering with iodine uptake. Goitrogens include broccoli brussel sprouts cabbage cauliflower kale spinach strawberries peaches watercress peanuts radishes soybeans among other foods. Consume fats If you re getting insufficient fat and cholesterol you could be exacerbating hormonal imbalance which includes thyroid hormones. Natural healthful fats include olive oil avocados flaxseed oil fish oil and nuts among others. Eat gluten free Gluten contains gliadin a protein that is foreign to the human body. Gliadin looks very similar to transglutaminase an enzyme needed to form chemical bonds throughout the human body.2 While present in many organs the thyroid possesses a higher concentration of this enzyme. When the immune system attacks gliadin the antibodies also attack the thyroid.3 As the immune response continues the thyroid suffers damage for up to six months after gluten consumption. Increase protein Protein transports thyroid hormone to all tissues and can help normalize thyroid function. Supplement your diet While nutritional deficiencies may not be the cause of hypothyroidism not having enough of these micronutrients min- erals and antioxidants can aggravate symptoms vitamin D iron omega-3 fatty acids selenium zinc copper vitamins A and B glutathione and iodine. Take probiotics 20 percent of thyroid function depends on a sufficient supply of healthy gut bacteria. Supplementing with a quality probiotic is highly recommended. Hyperthyroidism As previously mentioned the thyroid gland can also make excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone. The most common causes for hyperthyroidism are a chronically inflamed thyroid and an autoimmune condition called Grave s Disease. Both inflammatory and auto-immune disorders are caused by an over-active and under-coordinated immune system. Retailers need to understand that the following must be addressed with any inflammatory and auto-immune disorder. Anti-inflammatory diet Anti-inflammatory foods help to modulate the immune system so as to not overinflame when stimulated. To effectively de-inflame it is crucial to completely avoid man-made foods many of which are loaded with sugars. Fish oil supplements with EPA and DHA significantly impact inflammation in the body. Other great anti-inflammatory foods include berries and nondenatured whey protein from grassfed cows. This protein source is also loaded with L-glutamine and enhances cellular glutathione stores which are both necessary for rebuilding the gut and de-inflaming the body. Cruciferous vegetables Vegetables including broccoli cabbage and kale among others contain goitrogens in their raw state. Goitrogens block thyroid hormone production and will help to slow down the thyroid. Unlike people with hypothyroidism anyone with hyperthyroidism will greatly benefit from eating raw cruciferous vegetables. Dysbiosis This is an overpopulation of antagonistic organisms in the gut that damage the intestinal wall allowing food particles to easily pass over and end up in the bloodstream. When undigested food particles are recognized by the immune system and tagged as foreign invaders in the body the immune system then unleashes an assault of inflammation causing a systemic allergic reaction. Food allergens Similar to hypothyroidism avoid gluten containing grains such as wheat barley rye and oats among others. Also avoid soy products different nuts and eggs. Finally all processed and man-made foods need to be avoided at all costs. Vitamin D Helps coordinate the immune response by allowing the body to recognize between foreign and self proteins. This reduces inflammation and auto-immune reactions. Retailers need to commit to creating thyroid health awareness as part of their in-store health and wellness dialogue. Thyroid health and the natural solutions associated with this gland are often overlooked as viable options to many of your customer s health issues. Retailers should always consider thyroid health as a possible answer for specific wellness challenges moving forward. VR References 1. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. 2. OCTOBER 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 51 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray New Blood the Target Misses Mark Pressure B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND P reliminary results from a new study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) called the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) are being used to justify more aggressive drug therapy for high-risk individuals with high blood pressure. While lowering high blood pressure is without question an important step in extending life what the study fails to address is if drug therapy is the ideal approach or even necessary to achieve blood pressure targets. Despite the fact that virtually every authoritative medical organization (including the Joint National Committee on Detection Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure) has recommended that nondrug therapies be used in place of drugs in the treatment in all but moderate to severe hypertension what this new study will ultimately lead to is even more prescriptions for blood pressure lowering drugs. The results could be catastrophic in the long run. arteries. The peak reading of the pressure exerted by this contraction is the systolic pressure. Between beats the heart relaxes and blood pressure drops. The lowest reading is referred to as the diastolic pressure. A normal blood pressure reading for an adult is 120 (systolic) 80 (diastolic). Readings above this level are a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. In fact high blood pressure is generally regarded as the most significant risk factor for a stroke. High blood pressure (BP) readings can be divided into the following levels Prehypertension (120-139 80-89) Borderline (120-160 90-94) Mild (140-160 95-104) Moderate (140-180 105-114) Severe (160 115 ) cause in almost all cases of high BP. Some key dietary factors include excessive calorie consumption high sodium-to-potassium ratio low-fiber high-sugar diet high saturated fat and low omega-3 fatty acid intake and a diet low in calcium magnesium and vitamin C. Important lifestyle factors that may cause high BP include stress lack of exercise and smoking. Results From the SPRINT Study The NIH sought to address some of the issues in drug therapy for patients with high BP in the SPRINT trial. Studies with older medications primarily beta-blockers indicated that the drugs may actually increase mortality when used to lower blood pressure. These results and issues with newer drugs like calcium channel blockers and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors led to the recommendation by many expert organizations to try to achieve a target systolic reading of 140 mm Hg in patients over the age of 60. In fact less than two years ago a National Heart Lung and Blood Institute panel told physicians to aim for a systolic BP of 140 mm Hg in subjects under 60 and 150 mm Hg for people ages 60 and older What Causes High Blood Pressure High BP is most often the result of any number of factors that damage blood vessels and ultimately disrupt the regulation of the degree of constriction of blood vessels and fluid volume. Although genetic factors play a role there is little debate that dietary lifestyle psychological and environmental factors are the underlying What is High Blood Pressure Blood pressure refers to the resistance produced each time the heart beats and sends blood coursing through the 52 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 because there were no convincing data showing lower is better. One concern was older people might be especially vulnerable to side effects and drug interactions caused by higher dosages of BP lowering drugs. In SPRINT the goal was to achieve a target systolic pressure of 120 mm Hg in 9 300 men and women over the age of 50 who were at high risk for heart disease or had kidney disease and compare it to those with a goal of 140 mm Hg. Originally the study was designed to run until 2017 but researchers halted the study prematurely because the results were of such great significance. Hitting this new target reduced rates of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and heart failure as well as stroke by almost a third and the risk of death by almost a quarter as compared to the target systolic pressure of 140 mm Hg. Though the full results of the study have not yet been released what is known is that in those assigned to get their pressure below 140 mm Hg took on average two drugs. Those assigned to below 120 mm Hg took an average of three drugs. The study monitored side effects and apparently reviewers have concluded that the benefits outweighed any side effect issues. sion to moderate range what the drug companies won t tell you and most physicians ignore is that most cases of high BP can be brought under control with changes in diet lifestyle and proper use of dietary supplements. In fact in head-to-head comparisons many nondrug therapies such as diet exercise relaxation therapies and dietary supplements have proved superior to drugs in cases of prehypertension to mild and high BP. That said drugs to lower BP are among the most commonly prescribed medicines in the U.S. More than 700 million BP prescriptions are filled annually. Important Considerations Obviously it is very important to get BP below 120 80 mm Hg. But rather than using drugs to accomplish this goal a more rational approach is to utilize nondrug therapies that lower BP. Why All of the current classes of blood pressure lowering drugs possess significant side effects and 90 percent of people with high BP can lower their BP without drugs. Encouraging even more prescriptions for high BP drugs could have disastrous consequences. For example a 2013 study showed that women taking BP lowering drugs called calciumchannel blockers like Norvasc (amlodipine) for 10 years or more had a 2.5 times higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who never took the medicine or who used other BP treatments. This sort of side effect takes years to show up. The bottom line is that there is no question that drug therapy should be secondary to natural approaches. With more than 90 percent of patients with high BP are in the prehyperten- For moderate through severe hypertension drug therapy may be necessary but should be ideally used as a bridge therapy until dietary lifestyle and supplement strategies to lower BP take hold. Can Diet Therapy Alone Really Lower Blood Pressure Absolutely. In fact another NIH funded series of studies were titled Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH). These studies showed quite convincingly that diet alone is very effective in achieving normal BP in many patients with high BP. For moderate through severe hypertension drug therapy may be necessary but should be ideally used as a bridge therapy until dietary lifestyle and supplement strategies to lower BP take hold. In patients with moderate through severe hypertension drug therapy is appropriate but should still be thought of as a secondary approach. In regard to some specific recommendations to lower BP for most people with high BP achieving ideal body weight is their most important health goal. Even modest amounts of weight loss often produce a significant reduction in BP. Another key factor is salt intake. Between 40 percent and 60 percent of hypertensives are salt sensitive. In other words in about half of patients with high BP sodium restriction (e.g. less than 1 200 mg daily) is effective in lowering BP. Special foods for people with high BP include celery garlic and onions nuts and seeds cold-water fish e.g. salmon and mackerel or fish oil products concentrated for the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA green leafy vegetables and sea vegetables for their of calcium and magnesium ground flaxseeds whole grains and legumes for their fiber foods rich in vitamin C such as broccoli and citrus fruits and foods rich in active flavonoids including berries cherries grapes and legumes. Which Dietary Supplements Lower Blood Pressure A number of dietary supplements exert BP lowering activity. In fact something as simple as correcting an underlying deficiency of vitamin D3 or magnesium may effectively lower BP. Here are some of the key nutritional supplements and herbal products useful to support those with high BP Foundation supplements. High potency multiple vitamin D3 2 0005 000 IU day fish oil EPA DHA 1 000 to 3 000 mg day. Magnesium supplementation has been shown to lower blood pressure particularly in patients who are already on high BP medication. Typical reductions in clinical trials are in the range of 5-10 mm Hg but greater reductions have been noted in magnesium depleted subjects. Dosage 150 to 250 mg three times daily. The best forms are magnesium citrate malate glycinate and aspartate. WARNING People with kidney disease or severe heart disease (such as high-grade atrioventricular block) should not take magnesium unless under the direct advice of a physician. Bonito peptides (e.g. PeptAce) a purified mixture of small peptides (proteins) derived from fish bonito relaxes the arterial walls and helps to reduce fluid volume. Clinical studies have shown these peptides from VITAMIN RETAILER 53 OCTOBER 2015 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray bonito are effective in improving BP control. The degree of blood pressure reduction in these studies was quite significant typically reducing the systolic by at least 10 mm Hg and the diastolic by 7 mm Hg in patients with mild hypertension. Dosage 1 500 mg daily. Celery seed extract (standardized to contain 85 percent 3-n-butylphthalide [3nB]) has also been shown to help lower BP. 3nB is a compound that is unique to celery and is responsible for the characteristic flavor and odor of celery. It was discovered as the active component of celery in response to investigations by researchers seeking to explain some of the traditional effects of celery including lowering of BP and relief of joint pain. Dosage 75 to 150 mg twice daily. Olive leaf extract has significant support in recent animal and human studies both as an antihypertensive as well as for lowering cholesterol. Clinical studies with olive leaf extract have shown it to work as effective as the conventional antihypertensive drug Captopril in lowering blood pressure but without side effect. Typical reductions in systolic BP are 15-20 mm Hg in subjects with initial readings of 140 mm Hg or higher. Dosage 500 mg (17 percent to 23 percent oleuropein content) twice daily. Hibiscus tea or extracts have demonstrated antihypertensive properties in clinical trials. In double-blind studies hibiscus extract showed similar blood pressure lowering effect to popular antihypertensive drugs. But unlike the drugs which carry a significant side effect profile hibiscus has a 100 percent tolerability and safety response. Typical reductions in systolic BP are 15-20 mm Hg in subjects with initial readings of 140 mm Hg or higher. Dosage for the tea three 240 ml servings day for an extract take 10-20 mg anthocyanidins daily. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can help lower BP in some cases. In addition many patients with high BP have low CoQ10 levels. Dosage 200 to 400 mg daily. Garlic preparations can lower pressure. The results are generally modest i.e. in the 5-10 mm Hg range. Dosage should provide a total allicin potential of at least 4 000 mcg daily. Final Comments While natural products to lower blood cholesterol have become quite popular for some reason those that can improve BP are much less so. With 74 million Americans with hypertension and more than 700 million prescriptions for BP lowering drugs written in each year in the U.S. there seems to be a big market for natural BP aids. My guess as to why many hypertensives do not consider natural products is that prescription drugs to lower BP are cheap generic drugs. What they may not realize is that basing their course of action in dealing with high BP on their wallet may end up costing them their health. Michael T. He is a global expert on the subject of plant-based protein whose opinion has been sought by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) and in international forums such as Health Ingredients Europe and the American Food Technology & Innovation Summit. He is on the cutting edge of the world s third crop rice becoming the new wheat. tein is another plant protein that is gaining favor quickly. Hemp protein is very trendy and has a lot of interesting nutritional functions but has the least amount of protein available. It s also very expensive to extract. Question What are the benefits of plant proteins Answer The biggest consideration to use plant proteins is the allergen issue--intolerances to dairy and soy rule out casein and soy protein. Dairy and soy are two of the largest allergens of the top eight listed by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education). Food allergies are a massive problem and according to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention food allergies among children alone increased approximately 50 percent between 1997 and 2011. There are those concerned about added estrogen who will avoid soy protein and of course people who don t want to ingest animal products don t want animalbased whey protein (made of animal milk). There are lifestyle choices vegetarianism and veganism is growing exponentially. Google Trends stated that vegetarians have doubled in the past three years alone. Question What s the state of the market for plant proteins Answer The plant protein is growing industry like crazy everyone wants it. It can be found in everything from food products to nutrition supplements even skincare products. The top cereal and snack companies in the U.S. are furiously reformulating their products to take out wheat because of gluten issues and corn due to GMO (genetically modified organsim) infestation. We are in talks with them to provide rice protein for their new products. The fact that wheat and corn (the two largest world crops respectively) are falling from favor is big global news. So truly rice is becoming the new meat. CNBC even did a story about this recently. The fact that rice is the third biggest crop grown in the world and has the highest percentage of protein (more than any other plant) portends great things for this grain. Pea pro60 VITAMIN RETAILER hexane. When we got into the business in 2005 we created a proprietary fractioning method that instead uses enzymes. That s important information to ask about. Heavy metals are the elements on the periodic chart which in the case of plants exist naturally in the Earth s crust. The soil is different throughout the planet. This is why in Red Rock Canyon you see a heavy redness in the soil--it may have a lot of iron in it etc. So any plant that grows in soil has traces of the constituents from which it grows. This is normal for any plant we have ingested since the dawn of time. There is a consumer fear about heavy metals being added to plant proteins which is a grave misunderstanding. GRAS (generally recognized as safe) approval is something buyers should also look for. The GRAS approval is a standard set forth by the FDA. The achievement of GRAS status represents a gold-standard affirmation of an ingredient s safety. Question What should retailers know about plant proteins for fitness and muscle building Answer For the first time in history rice protein works the same way as whey protein. Clinical trials have shown this and you can find the abstract in the Nutrition Journal 6 19 13. For bodybuilders they ll be very interested to know that rice protein not only will help them build and keep mass but it doesn t trigger allergies--and they won t have to deal with the typical bloats and upset stomach that comes with whey protein. Everyone in the gym will appreciate that Question What should retailers look for when purchasing plant protein products Answer Always ask where the product comes from and make sure you have a qualified source. It s important to buy from reputable companies and manufacturers. For example rice protein though it s sold as a natural product is often fractioned apart using a petroleum product called WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM OCTOBER 2015 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com nowfoods for info about this advertiser Go to www.vitaminretailer.com bluebonnet for info about this advertiser
