That was an exciting time and with each and every issue (all 8) we learned something new met someone new and read something new. Each and every issue is special and holds a spot in our hearts and our book shelves. We are looking forward to this coming year with exciting themes and possibilities. For this issue our theme is science fiction fantasy and fairy tales. These stories have been around since before the written word. Fairy tales in the original form not the Disney form can be quite gruesome. They are moral tales confirming that goodness wins over evil the most famous of course are those of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. And most fairy tales incorporate some element of fantasy. Fantasy uses elements of mythical creatures such as fairies nymphs and elves and magic. Think Harry Potter Lord of the Rings The Last Unicorn The Hobbit and so forth. These will also have a good vs. evil component. Finally Science fiction revolves around a science element. In the old days it could be traveling to the moon or Mars or space aliens or super submarines. H.G. Wells and Jules Verne come to mind as early science fiction authors and Asimov and Clarke as more recent authors. These don t have a good vs. evil theme per se but they do explore possibilities of conflict and cooperation between civilizations or the human struggle. We are happy to present stories that are science fiction (Humans Live in Space) fantasy (The Twin Knights) and fairy tales (Unicorn). They speak to all of us in our struggles and in our humanity. The dream fading as his eyelids open a slit tired eyes attempting to roll and follow the beams trails. He feels cold and can t move his body can t even feel the bottom of his toes. His vision clears and he sees them. He sees it. A green blob moving slow and fluid as if swimming underwater. The green light beams burst from its gelatinous body a body which reaches forward in a wave a wave stretched from the lower half that stays still stays solid from the ground it stands. Tom Lin s science fiction story Humans Live in Space is an intriguing look at possibility of living in space and the pursuit of emotional repair. The Seventh Premise By Giles Selig My work has been rejected by so many publications that I struggle constantly to keep my expectations realistic. That s why I eventually decided to pursue a lofty standard by focusing exclusively on the New Yorker despite the fact that my success rate there had been numerically zero. This did not reflect a lack of craft or talent I could be confident in that. It mainly signified I hadn t quite yet stumbled on the right material for those prestigious and eclectic pages. I kept trying various things and on occasion even resubmitting them. One was a humor piece about a copy editor who liked to toy with other people s grammar and it bounced more times than at which a stick can be shaken. Giles Selig s story The Seventh Premise tells a humorous tale of an author s struggle with rejection. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. It was typical of Nanna that she would have foreseen her own death and would have prepared for it by ensuring all her Christmas presents for family had been bought wrapped up and arranged around her Christmas tree before settling herself down in front of the fire in her small Durham terrace and shuffling off her mortal coil. Julia MacFarlane s fantasy story A Northern Christmas Ghost Story is a delightful story about a family s love and a special grandmother who kept the family together even after death. He studied his image in the mirror. A reflection of superb grooming and neatness he was pleased. It had been two years since their firm had been destroyed. It was an even greater shock to receive an invitation to participate in his new discovery. At first he thought it some elaborate hoax. But after multiple inquires he replied and made the journey to share in his new triumph. Roger Schumacher hits another story out of orbit in his story Vanity. It is fantastic story about vanity and revenge and getting what you deserve. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Order a single issue or annual subscription print or digital. Nathan van Coops Nathan Van Coops lives in St. Petersburg Florida on a diet comprised mainly of tacos. He enjoys old planes motorcycles and Volkswagens and contends that there is such a thing as dressy flip-flops. He is the author of two time travel adventure novels In Times Like These and The Chronothon. He teaches people to fly and has begun to teach writing courses as well helping others navigate the path to publishing a novel compliments of Keep St. Pete Lit St. Petersburg s non-profit literary foundation. Traveling in Time P&D When did you first start writing Nathan I began the first novel in my series around 2008 and it was my first venture into fiction. It was a wonderful challenge and something I wanted to see succeed. It took me over four years to finish but I learned an incredible amount in the process. P&D Did you write any short stories prior to writing your first novel Nathan I had written a few non-fiction adventure stories about my own life but no fictional short stories. I wish I had because short stories are a great way to connect with people and to reach out to new readers. Good marketing of a series frequently involves quality short story writing. The more content you have the stronger your author platform can become. P&D How did you become interested in time travel and writing about time travel Nathan I grew up as a fan of time travel adventure in film and fiction and really wanted to read something that was more than just a there and back again tale. It seemed time travel in fiction was frequently employed only at the beginning and end of a story. I wanted to have an ongoing adventure where time travel was used not just once or twice in the story but all through it. I had trouble finding a book like that so I decided to write one P&D Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work and what impact did they have on your writing Nathan Stephen King s book On Writing probably had the biggest impact on my writing because it is such a great resource and inspiration at the same time. My favorite authors in terms of books I grew up with were Michael Ende (The Neverending Story) and classic adventure writers like Robert Lewis Stephenson Tolkien Kipling and Dumas. The classics birthed my love of adventure writing. Lately I ve been branching out more into Indies. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. I see now he says but he doesn t seem offended. That s what yer pa says does he then he tilts his head back to look up at the sky a fading pastel blue fringed by summer storm clouds. Well in my humble opinion li l one pas are usually right about all kinds of stuff. He s been doin this farmin business for a lot longer than you and me. He looks back down at her with a gentle expression and his hat flickers and fades for a moment. Has it done that before But what do you think he continues. In each issue of Pilcrow & Dagger one story is chosen to be read as a podcast. In this issue we chose The Corn Coders by Miranda Luby. This is a story of a futuristic farm and a farmer s family. Be sure to take a few minutes to listen and enjoy. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Order a single issue or annual subscription print or digital. Ghost Dancer By Nels Hanson For most of us born after 2050 the horrors of previous human history and the technological devastation of the Earth seem almost legendary. They resemble strange questionable facts found only in moldering history texts as unlikely as the imaginings of the Greek and Roman natural philosophers who described the phoenix and the griffin. Nels Hanson pens a wonderful future story Ghost Dancer about the human struggles that plague the past and continue into the future. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. The Twin Knights By Victor Espinoza But one man was oblivious to the natural change around him and the people all going about their duties this man was focused on another matter entirely. Jacob sat on the third step down from his home facing the front of his meager property. A path stood before him which meandered through a thick but brief forest of apple trees to end near Rovyn Road. Green foliage all around him started to take on a darker color as the sun found itself lower and lower in the sky. Yet as time passed even further and darkness began to envelop his surroundings Jacob remained stoic. Victor Espinoza s fantasy story Twin Knights is a classic and timeless story about knights in shining armor with a twist of irony sure to leave awestruck. The Thanksgiving of the Purple Gravy By Megan Cassidy Barbara Jane was a quiet only child who had rarely traveled away from home outside of her trips from her family s hometown to the small Lutheran college where she was currently a sophomore. The college was a few hours away from her parents and Barbara had resisted going since she was a homebody and enjoyed her tranquil home. But the studious girl had earned a full scholarship and after all the college did offer services every Sunday morning every weekday at noon and every Wednesday night. So Barbara had reluctantly agreed to go dutifully traveling home on weekends and holidays. Megan Cassidy s The Thanksgiving of the Purple Gravy is a funny and real look into family life and the chaos that reigns. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions.
