B E S T W I N T ER 2 016 WESTWOOD Welcome to SEE THE MO VIE 8 BEST Dipping into the past to build the future By Jack Heffron I CAN THINK OF FEW BETTER PLACES to spend a mellow Saturday afternoon than Henke Winery and Restaurant in Westwood. A plate of cheeses meats and crackers a splash of Cabernet music wafting gently through the rooms. Like proud soldiers dozens of bottles line the windowsills that run along the front room s perimeter medals hanging on their necks awards won at state national and international competitions through the years. Joe Henke shrugs modestly when asked how many he s won. Hundreds he says. Easily hundreds. Several times his wines have won Best in Ohio. At award ceremonies he s poured a glass for two governors. Foodie websites annually list his establishment among the country s top urban wineries. In an article on urban wineries a few years ago USA Today prominently featured Henke Winery. Not that all of these achievements have led to a whole lot of renown beyond the west side except among wine aficionados who drive from Louisville Indianapolis and other cities to taste his wines. Eastsiders however aren t exactly lining up at the door. When they do come Joe says they re often taken by surprise. They don t expect to find a place like this on the west side he says. But if I can get them to come there s a 99 percent chance they ll be back. WEST 9 SEE THE MO WOOD Westwood s Misconception The Bowtie Plan Westwood itself suffers from a similar misconception. The city s largest neighborhood is seen by many outside its borders as just one of the fading inner-ring suburbs whose best days are behind it. That reputation however is beginning to change in part due to the efforts of four community organizations that have formed the Westwood Coalition to revitalize the neighborhood. The Westwood Civic Association Westwood Historical Society Westwood Works and WestCURC (Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation) have joined forces to push for the creation of an entertainment and business district centered at the intersection of Harrison and Epworth Avenues. Through the wide front window at the winery I can see the proposed district s ground zero. Such ambitious undertakings in older neighborhoods always present significant challenges but Westwood has a leg up on most because quite a few key pieces of the plan are already in place -- and have been there for quite a long time. First of all a town center needs a central building to serve as an anchor. Check. Got that. The Westwood Town Hall with its handsome Romanesque Revival architecture and graceful bell tower (that includes its own ghost) presides over the vicinity. Built in 1889 by the Village of Westwood the town hall housed government offices as well as the police and fire departments. It now offers classes in a variety of activities run by the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. A recent renovation has brought the building back to its former glory and it provides the setting for community activities ranging from the Westwood Art Show to the annual Deck the Hall holiday celebration. SEE O M The grounds of the town hall form an isosceles triangle that pokes into Harrison Avenue. Right across the street sits Gaines Triangle a small landscaped island of greenery separating Epworth from Harrison. Because the two triangles form what looks like a bowtie the Westwood Coalition now uses that name for its current plan for configuring the district. In the bowtie plan Gaines Triangle will be expanded into a larger green space. In the knot of the bowtie stands what might be the most critical piece in the plan -- a destination spot that will draw people to the district even from as far away as the eastside. A new home for the nationally recognized Madcap Puppets is being built in the 20 000-square-foot former Cincinnati Bell switching station that more recently served as a storage annex for the Hamilton County Public Library system. Having received two grants totaling more than 500 000 Madcap Puppets hopes to throw open the doors to its theater in 2017. Greg Kissel who has called Westwood home for more than 20 years is working on the design of the renovation through his company A359 Partners in Architecture. On this project he wears two hats. He and his wife Liz are very active in the community. Greg says that he s working with Madcap on converting the first floor into a small theater and a gallery while the second floor will feature a large theater that he calls a soaring space. Designed by distinguished Cincinnati architect Harry Hake (who also designed Crosley Field among many other notable buildings) the building which opened in 1927 looks far more ornate than one would expect for a public utility. But Greg explains It wasn t just a service building the way we think of them today. It represents the communication device becoming central to the community. Bell saw itself as a community partner in many ways. They used an ornate very classical style much like banks did. To that end the entry and the second floor staircase include Rookwood tile and Greg raves about the beautiful second-floor ceiling as well as many other unique features that will make the renovation challenging but the finished product spectacular. It takes a sensitive touch with a building like this he says. It s nice to see young people buying here and adding a new energy. All the wonderful older homes we have are attracting them. Across Urwiler Avenue from the theater stands the Westwood United Methodist Church. Designed by Samuel Hannaford one of Cincinnati s most distinguished architects of the 19th Century the Gothic Revival church was completed in 1896. With its eye-popping stonework and tall spire the church adds beauty and gravitas to the surrounding area a perfect complement to the entertainment and commerce planned for the district. Those plans include integrating among these exceptional buildings a bevy of new restaurants and shops along the corridor which would stretch from Montana to Boudinot avenues. Next to Henke Winery stands the hundred-year-old Engine 35 firehouse (see photo at right) which is now vacant. Planners have discussed turning it into a restaurant or bakery or some other type of entertainment venue. On Its Way Back Not that Westwoodians are waiting on completion of the entertainment district to begin revitalizing the neighborhood. Joe Henke among quite a few other residents believes the change is already well underway. Westwood is on its way back says Joe. It s nice to see young people buying here and adding a new energy. All the wonderful older homes we have are attracting them. He has lived in Westwood since 1978 and moved his winery-restaurant here in 2001. As for why he stays here when surely his wine and food would attract a lot more attention (and higher prices) in say Hyde Park or Mount Lookout he says I like the people here. They re real. And after a while you get to know the people who come in. The servers know what they want before they order. There s a neighborhood feeling. He has served on the board of the Westwood Civic Organization in past years and is active in WestCURC but he remains philosophical about the fate of the planned entertainment district. In his soft laid-back voice he says It s up in the air. If it happens great. If not that s fine too. 11 WESTWOOD Westwood United Methodist Church Mother of Mercy High School Madcap Puppets Westwood Elementary School 12 BEST THE BEST IN FINE HOMES That attitude has prevailed in Westwood almost from the start and could be seen as the secret to the neighborhood s resilience. In the late 1800s Westwood struggled to grow despite the efforts of some powerful residents most prominently James N. Gamble whose family owned Procter & Gamble. Best known as the inventor of Ivory soap Gamble played a significant role in the history of the neighborhood. He lived in a Victorian mansion on Werk Road just a short walk from the proposed entertainment district and was the force behind many a Westwood project. Although Westwood is not far from downtown steep terrain and the Mill Creek made commuting to the city center difficult back in Gamble s day. To remedy the problem he and other wealthy residents of the neighborhood supported and helped fund a railroad extension that ultimately failed. But Gamble continued to invest in Westwood and served as the village s last mayor helping to arrange for annexation by Cincinnati in 1896. The neighborhood eventually flowered and many of the handsome homes of those who followed him to the area still stand. His own 170-year-old home however was torn down in 2013 after years of battling to preserve it a fight led primarily by Greg and Liz Kissel and the Westwood Historical Society. This defeat however didn t set the resilient community back for long. Today things are buzzing in Westwood more than ever. One of the organizations building that buzz is Westwood Works. To find out more about their efforts I head out of the winery and down a couple of tree-lined blocks to the Westwood branch library a tidy art deco structure built in 1930. Kathy Bach is the manager there and she and her husband Rick Boyd helped found Westwood Works back in 2008. We raised our children here. It s a great walking neighborhood. And it s a great dog-walking neighborhood. Though resting comfortably nearby on the hardwood floor of the beautiful dining room Emmy their black lab surely must agree. We ve met so many of our neighbors that way. Vanessa and her husband Rick love the neighborhood so much they ve lived here for 40 years. Their five-bedroom home on Beechwood Avenue is their third in North Avondale. One of their two sons both grown and married owns a home here. It s hard to leave this neighborhood Vanessa says. We have so many friends here. We re really going to miss it. It s very special. And it s easy to see why she feels that way. There s no other neighborhood quite like North Avondale in Cincinnati. The handsome expansive homes many of them built in the early decades of the 20th century stand on spacious property and reflect an elegant era in the city s history. The well-to-do began living here back when people regularly used terms like well-to-do. And the term well kept doesn t begin to describe the obvious care owners lavish on their homes in North Avondale. The Waynes home was built in 1922 but when they bought it 15 years ago they were amazingly only the second owners. While they were pleased to see so many of the house s unique historical features still in place they knew they had a lot of work to do. We spent 14 months rehabbing it Rick recalls. The undertaking involved all new plumbing and wiring a new roof and new windows a new kitchen and bathrooms even the creation of a new floor plan. I drew it on the back of a napkin says Rick. They contacted local architect Nestor Melnyk to help them reinvent the home while retaining its essential character and Melnyk found creative ways to make Rick s vision a reality. NORTH AVONDALE 17 FEATURED HOME The handsome expansive homes many of them built in the early decades of the 20th century stand on spacious property and reflect an elegant era in the city s history. SEE THE MO VIE 18 BEST That vision went far beyond modernizing the house. It also included for example creating a terrace off the master bedroom. And the makeover didn t stop with the inside. They re-landscaped the entire property. The visionary for the outside however was Vanessa. I love to garden she says before explaining in expert detail how she transformed the grounds adding conifers and Japanese maples sculpting the yards into stunning landscapes. Rick adds that when they bought the property it didn t include a driveway yet another to-do they checked off their list. One of the crown jewels of their efforts is the kitchen. Designed and built by craftsman David T. Smith it features tiger maple cabinetry and moldings that catch your eyes and hold them from the minute you walk in. It has that kind of stopping power. I ll miss my kitchen Vanessa says. It s so beautiful and it s the perfect size. Summing up their achievement Vanessa says We took the house from 1922 and brought it into the twenty-first century. The true accomplishment however is how they managed to make all the changes while preserving and even enhancing the historic character of the home. After putting so much sweat equity into the place they aren t eager understandably to leave it behind. But with their sons gone they feel it s time to settle into someplace smaller. However Rick is quick to note that their home doesn t live big meaning that the rooms are cozy and comfortable. The home despite its size never feels cavernous. Rick and Vanessa agree that the home also offers a lot of flexibility as far as decoration. You can dress it up or dress it down SEE THE MO VIE 19 FEATURED HOME Vanessa says. It s that kind of house. The Waynes filled it with antiques which add to the historic ambiance but the house could just as easily accommodate a more contemporary decorative approach. It also has an open pleasing flow to the rooms making it a good place for entertaining. Vanessa says We ve had over 40 people here for Thanksgiving. That s the holiday they ll best remember when they move away she adds. Their home provided the setting for many family holiday gatherings but was always the place for Thanksgiving. They say they ll miss hosting those large dinners and they ll also miss the way sunlight suffuses the living room and what they call the library at the front of the house. The latter room they agree is where they spend much of their down time. The light in that room with all the windows is great says Rick. Just very relaxing. They also enjoy sitting by their fabulous fireplaces. The house has three of them including an especially grand one that is the centerpiece of the living room a space they say they wish they d used more often. Maybe the next owners won t reserve it mostly for entertaining as the Waynes did. When asked who they foresee buying the home they offer a variety of ideas. Rick says the house is ideal for families offering plenty of living space. Vanessa agrees but also feels that a younger couple wouldn t find it too big. She then decides It s for anyone who loves it. Somebody has to walk in and love the house. Given the many exceptional features of the home it s easy to see quite a few people doing just that. And after the browser s initial swoon Vanessa would let them know there s more here than meets the eye. We ve taken very good care of it she says. This house is in very good shape. And that s exactly what homeowner Pam Seger has been doing. The kitchen great room is definitely the gathering place in our home. It is very people friendly says Seger. The room hosted more than 75 people between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2015. The home show was Homearama 2014 located in Carriage Hill a Liberty Township community. Kitchens are always one of the most favored rooms to visit in any home show says Douglas Bryant owner of Clayton Douglas Homes who built the home. That s why most are designed with a Wow but functional footprint. The biggest challenge was in planning and building the barrel-vaulted ceiling that includes both the kitchen and the great room. We wanted one large open entertaining area with no walls separating the two rooms. Plus we wanted to emphasize the marble-topped center island as the room s focal point. Each of the four curved beams adds to the barrel vaulted ceiling covering the 20 x 40 room. I love the layout of the kitchen and the appliances are awesome says Seger. She noted that the room recently hosted a West Chester Community Foundation event for 16 cooked by a local chef. Bryant says that while the design of each home in Homearama can be as different as night to day the one near constant is the appliance selection builders make because of their obvious presence and reputation for quality. Most Homearama homes have Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances he adds. We wanted the largest range hood combination that made sense for the space but also catered to the gourmet chef. An oversized refrigerator was a must for this size kitchen and for the amount of cooking we assumed would be taking place here. We went with the stainless steel package except for the dishwasher where we wanted a panel to help blend it in. Speaking of accolades That local chef referred to above Seger said he told her that it was the best kitchen he had ever worked in. 23 FANTASTIC KITCHENS LIBERT Y TOWNSHIP Builder Clayton Douglas Homes Ltd. He was an African-American gentleman probably in his 70 s his dark hair sprinkled with white and gray his eyes sparkling at the opportunity to speak with Munoz. As I approached them I could not help but smile. I d seen this tableau time after time. I first met Anthony in 1980 and covered him during his 13 years with the Bengals two Super Bowls and one Pro Bowl season after another. Here was Anthony doing it again being Anthony. He wasn t patronizing the gentleman. He wasn t feigning interest. He wasn t conversing. He was talking with the man. He was listening to what he had to say. Meanwhile on the stage the program was beginning. Anthony did not break away from the waiter. He continued to talk with the old man. The topics ranged from football to family and finally the waiter said Oh pardon me Mr. Munoz. They are about to start. I ve kept you too long. Anthony took the man s hand twisted some by time and toil. No he said I ve enjoyed talking with you. The old gentleman smiled. He was speechless. I thank you Mr. Munoz. Munoz had turned for the stage. He looked back and said Anthony. Call me Anthony. Anthony Munoz number 78 Fox Sports analyst Matt Millen said recently. We came in to the league the same year (1980). To me for my money he was the best left tackle I ve ever seen and maybe a better person than a player -- if that s possible. When my twin sons were playing football in elementary school the coaches were looking for a speaker for the annual awards banquet. The school was a tiny Catholic school with a storied program that had fallen on hard times. Ideas were kicked around about who might agree to be the guest speaker. They had asked the coach at Elder High School to speak but a last minute conflict made it impossible. I suggested that I might be able to find a replacement. The phone call was short. I told Anthony about the school and the season and how hard the kids worked but with little success. He said What day and what time The night of the banquet it was standing room only. There were more adults than kids. Anthony spoke just long enough to keep the youngest players interested. Then he gave them what During his playing days no one in the NFL was better. (Anthony) has conducted his personal and family life in a way that it is a great credit to the Bengals and the NFL. Mike Brown Cincinnati Bengals they wanted. He sat at a table and posed for pictures with each player and signed autographs until there were no more requests. My sons now 26 still have those pictures. We offered Anthony a modest honorarium that night. He laughed. It was my pleasure he said. There s no one like him probably never will be said Dave Lapham a former teammate and WLW 700 Bengals analyst. Nicest guy in the world. I don t think I ever heard him swear. Oh I ve seen him mad but not like other guys . . . I mean he took it out on you competitively . . . It s like he s almost too good to be true. Of course his faith is a big part of that. Just the other day we talked for nearly an hour. It s a hard thing to ask a man to explain his nature but Anthony kept coming back to one thing. I ve tried to never forget where I came from he said and I ve had so much opportunity ... It came from somewhere and it came with an obligation ... One I m willing to meet. 29 GOOD GUY CELEBRITIES to do specific paintings. When I visited him in his Georgetown gallery to read his birthday cards staffers Selma and Sandy were busy packaging some of his framed prints and putting them in John s car to be personally delivered to their buyers by the master himself. John s most current public work is a painting of a Bald Eagle flying past Old Glory. The original will be auctioned off by the United Service Organization (USO) as a fundraiser and it is expected that proceeds will exceed 100 000. Interesting that one of John s well wishers inscribed his birthday card as follows I want to thank you for some advice you gave me when we first met . . . As an animal artist I took it to heart Be available get out in the public. I just was featured on CET PBS and am now getting calls from all over the country. John kept his 140-acre Georgetown farm after his cherished wife Judy passed away in 2011. He visits frequently and each time hikes the backwoods trails of several miles. A few years ago he purchased a condo in Mariemont where he lives most of the time and can often be seen walking through the neighborhoods and along the train tracks. John s top fan is daughter Ricki who lives in Cincinnati. I asked her about John s appeal. He is a natural people person and he s always been that way. He is always in a good mood and feeds off the energy he gets from people. But he is also a very humble man. What you see is what you get. On why his art connects so strongly with people she adds His work is honest it is how he sees life -- beautiful calming peaceful. We are very proud of him and consider every moment with him something special. BUT WHY BIRDS Because birds are the visual connection most fans have with John how and why did birds become the chosen ones The answer is surprisingly simple says John and it is likely the same reason why so many liked the art of John James Audubon. I paint for people and most of the wild animals people see are birds he says. They are diurnal out in front in their backyards. I feel very strongly attached to painting things that are appealing. While John may walk a bit slower in his trademark L.L. Bean shoes than he used to he has no intention of slowing down. In particular he still has one authentic painting he begs to do though until he actually sees the subject alive and in flight -- thought to have been extinct since the 1920s -- he won t be able to fulfill the dream. The last alleged sighting of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker was a few years ago in Florida. In January 2016 John will be visiting the Florida Panhandle for three weeks searching along the Choctawhatchee River hoping for a confirmed sighting of the bird similar to the Pileated Woodpecker a crimson-crested flyer John sees frequently on his farm. Not only is there notoriety in seeing and painting something long thought gone it is especially important to John that Gail Norton U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 2001-2006 appointed him the official painter of the real McCoys if and when they fly by. If John sees one there can no longer be any doubt that the bird lives and exactly what it looks like. Smiles were abundant to those when first making eye contact with John at his birthday celebration. He was their friend or about to be and would make them feel comfortable. Most I suspect had one or more Ruthvens on their walls and after paying him homage likely went home and took a closer look at their prized possessions. What a wonderful life John has enjoyed and shared with so many as so well articulated in so many of the 350 cards I read. What a life indeed. (continued from page 57) MORE OF WHAT THE CARDS SAID You have made me think about and see our beautiful world differently . . . Happy birthday to my favorite rare bird. Teresa To this day your beautiful fox has hung proudly and prominently in our formal living room. Our first grandson nearly two now always says Hi to the fox when he enters our living room and like his father so many years ago admires this fox for its beauty. Thank you for being a part of our home . . . Toni I treasure the two prints I own The Ruddy Duck Family and Bird s Edge. I look at them each day and warm happy thoughts go through me for how much I love nature and how well you captured it in your paintings. Joanne I do not know you but I do own one of the copies of your paintings. I as well am an artist. Artists should stick together. I am turning 14 soon so I wish you a happy birthday. Kate I thought an artist who created a cardinal that became famous would like to see another cardinal by another artist. Bill Our family moved to Cincinnati in 1980. Mom wanted a nice piece of art to feature above the fireplace. She bought the flicker. Five moves later the flicker remains a featured piece in our Dad s apartment in a retirement community. We lost Mom two years ago. Dad is rapidly declining. As we discuss end of life planning the flicker comes up as a prized possession. All four of our girls want it. Mom had an eye for beautiful things and beautiful people. Thank you for painting and sharing YOU with the world. Laura Your talent is a triumph. Jack The happiest of birthdays to a young Renaissance man not only a world renowned nature artist teacher diplomat naturalist restorer of a small Brown County town but an all-around country Gentle-Man. Barbara & Dick You are my hero and I am proud to know you. Shirley Joy Happy Love are only a few things your work brings to me. Ruthie GREAT ARTIST GREAT STORY TELLER Over the last 20 years I ve had the opportunity to write a half-dozen stories about John and to attend several events where he was honored for his work. It s easy to see why people like him why they buy his art (not only because it s good but because there s a good story behind each piece) why journalists interview him (all writers like a great storyteller) and because his subjects are often the creatures most of us know generically but don t really know at all. But by the time John finishes telling you a story about a Kingfisher you feel like you saw it with him. Certainly being friendly -- always a great marketing tool -- has also been good for sales. John estimates he has sold tens of thousands of prints most of his originals and is regularly commissioned Local yes. Global aye One-of-a-kind listings in Cincinnati s most desirable neighborhoods. We spent months planning debating and scheduling our destinations. We would start in Cincinnati and head to San Francisco with stops in Iowa and Minnesota to visit family before departing for the Bay Area via South Dakota Wyoming Montana Idaho Oregon and finally California. The process was simplified by our use of Roadtrippers.com -- a local start-up that makes trip planning far simpler than ever before. We scheduled stops in expected places like the Badlands Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Crater Lake Bend (OR) Coeur d Alene (ID) and the Redwoods also made the cut. Visits to these well-known and beloved national treasures were supplemented by trips to a few destinations a bit off the beaten path -- The Corn Palace in South Dakota Deadwood (SD) to see Wild Bill Hickok s grave and Big Horn National Forest. It was to be the father-son trip of a lifetime. Just one thing. It wasn t just a father-son trip. It became the father-son-puppy trip of a lifetime. How did our 6 month-old rescue Mar become a part of our trip It seems our puppy was just not prepared to be left behind. The day before we were set to leave we put Mar in a kennel but she did not take to it. Although still just a puppy she twice jumped a six-foot fence surrounding her run -- thankfully not to run away but to join the smaller dogs in another area. So the morning we were set to depart we got the news that Mar would not be able to stay at the kennel. The only alternative Our road-tripping duo instantaneously became a trio for the trek West. While my first reaction was one of mild panic ... how are we going to make it all the way to San Francisco with a puppy Navigating hotels restaurants national parks ... it all seemed a bit daunting and inevitable that Mar s presence would impact our ability to enjoy the trip. But far from detracting from the trip Mar made it even more special. She is a perfect roadtripper -- as soon as the car started rolling each day Mar would fall asleep until we reached our next stop. At which time she would pop out of the passenger side to eagerly see what was next. Mar was made welcome at hotels restaurants and tourist attractions across the country -- in every state we passed through -- and as her sidekicks we were made welcome too. From watching Old Faithful spout off to taking a sightseeing boat to Alcatraz Mar joined us every step of the way. So now whenever we hear Horace Greeley s advice to Go west young man Owen and I will quietly smile and remember our adventure in the summer of 2015 when our rallying cry was Go west young Mar. THE MO SEE (Story continued from page 12) It started in our kitchen Kathy says. She and Rick and a handful of friends wanted to generate and support new ideas and new activities in the neighborhood. Rick says he is an eastside transplant while Kathy grew up in Green Township a few miles west of Westwood. They ve lived in the neighborhood for nearly 16 years. And if there s something fun happening in Westwood Kathy and Rick usually are somewhere nearby. WESTWOOD VIE Westwood s Front Yard Fiesta Westwood Works has spawned many activities ranging from car shows to book clubs Friday Movie Night to a summer beer garden event. And they ve done a treasure hunt a haunted bike ride as well as a Cheviot Slow Ride. They agree that one of their favorite events is called Front Yard Fiesta -- a block party of sorts held in the front yards of anyone interested in taking part. The idea is that backyard parties tend to be exclusive to those who ve been invited. Anyone who happens to walk by can join a front-yard party. I ve never seen it in any other neighborhood says Rick. The organization itself is pretty unusual. Meetings are held in various places ranging from the backs of restaurants to once a car dealer s parking lot where attendees sat on fold-up lawn chairs. Kathy says the meetings usually draw 40 to 50 people and everyone s ideas are welcome. No one however can simply offer a gripe or an idea that they think someone else should execute. You tell us what you want to do and we ll help you make it happen Kathy says. As part of the Westwood Coalition Westwood Works is working hard to make the entertainment district happen. The potential of the bowtie is huge Kathy says. I can see it being like Oakley. But whether or not it achieves that level of success won t change their view of the neighborhood which offers so many other advantages to them already. Rick says the location is a key factor for him. He works at the downtown library and says his commute takes 15 minutes -- in bad traffic. He has lived in Liberty Hill and Mt. Washington and sees Westwood as a combination of the two. You have lawns and trees and space but you re only minutes from the center of the city. Kathy s commute to the Westwood branch is even shorter of course. Most days she walks to work or rides her bike and she says people along the way say hi because they know her from the library. She and Rick agree that there s a strong sense of community here. It s not as transient as a lot of other neighborhoods Rick says. He adds with a smile And here you can watch for peak leaf season. You don t get to do that in Over-the-Rhine. Great Housing Stock at Great Prices Most of all they appreciate the exceptional housing and its affordability. Says Kathy We chose to live here because it s very affordable for what you get for your dollar. As an architect as well as a resident Greg Kissel more than agrees. We have a number of really great assets in the neighborhood. So many trees. There s a real beauty here and a lot of architectural styles he says. There are homes here that predate the village and homes from the 1870s 80s and 90s. Tudors from the1920s. Grand homes in the Medieval Tudor style. And beautiful bungalows. Some are real jewels. As for the push to create the entertainment district he says It s about a community coming back to its town center. We want to create a family-friendly venue but also to create an area that s self-identified. When you re here you know it s Westwood. A PRIVATE ELEGANT & PARK-LIKE SETTING ... By Jack Heffron You ve been thinking about buying a castle... HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THEY OWN A CASTLE Tom Post the owner of the sumptuous Castle Post in Versailles Kentucky ponders the question and struggles for an answer. There are people who can say they own a mansion. Hugh Hefner has a mansion. But they can t say they have a castle. I have a castle. And his castle is located right in the middle of one of the region s truly scenic areas -- Kentucky s bluegrass country near Lexington just minutes from Keeneland racing and sales complex as well as the Lexington airport. Some of the most beautiful horse farms in the world are right here says Post. The bigger mystery to many passersby is why the castle is here. For years it s been a local curiosity -- an unexpected treat for travelers driving through rural Kentucky. Construction began on the castle in the early 1970s by the original owners who based their vision for it on castles they had recently toured in France. Their efforts on the project stalled however and the castle stood empty for a long time adding to its mystery among the locals. It was still largely unfinished when Post a Lexington native bought the property in 2003. After years of renovation he opened it as a restaurant-hotel-event space in 2009. Since then it has welcomed hundreds of weddings corporate meetings and retreats car shows hobby clubs and various other group gatherings. Its guest list includes celebrities politicians and fittingly royalty. Post says the castle sometimes hosts as many as four or five events in a week. Everything works TURRET SUITES ARE FAVORED The 50-acre property can easily accommodate the castle-lovers when they arrive. With 23 rooms 16 bedrooms and 16 full bathrooms there s plenty of space available for overnight guests who can enjoy what is surely the most unique bed-and-breakfast experience of their lives. Post says he s especially fond of the suites located in the turrets located at the corners of the castle s high surrounding walls. Each of the turret suites features a sitting area on the first floor and a bedroom on the second. You can have a castle within a castle he says. Inside the house the features are even more spectacular -- 30-foot ceilings large and exquisite chandeliers tapestries and mirrors and artwork on the walls a stunning staircase. The gourmet kitchen is large enough to handle service for dinner guests in the dining room which can seat up to 40 guests but it also could be used as a personal kitchen by a private owner. Unlike typical commercial kitchens this one includes windows. Large parties have access to a magnificent ballroom (called appropriately the Great Hall) complete with a remarkable fireplace. When describing the home it s tough to avoid sounding like you re exaggerating but even the most charged-up marketing hyperbole barely does the place justice. Guests can choose from an array of outdoor activities on the property. Whether strolling the spacious and well-tended grounds to playing tennis and basketball on the courts located within the castle walls there s no shortage of fun options. Guests who prefer the recreation indoors can choose to spend time in the handsome billiard room or library. You can do it all here Post says. People find that it offers opportunities for both tranquility and discovery. He also points out that the nearby town of Versailles -- with its artisans quaint streets and unique shops -- provides guests with still more options for entertainment. The next owners will enjoy the same variety of options. It s easy enough to do whatever you want with the property says Post. It s very flexible. You can use it as a private home or use it as a hotel or a business center or a school or a fancy department store or a farm. He notes that the property includes a barn as well as a caretaker s house. Because everything has been renovated so recently he says the property is not hard to maintain. And because he has invested so much time and expense to create this one-of-a-kind palace Post says he knows he will miss it quite a bit after the sale. I ll always have the memories of it he says. BEST GOOD GUY CELEBRITIES WHAT S A CELEBRITY WITHOUT FANS While nobody can begrudge the need for some privacy all fans want a piece of the object of their affection -- at the least an autograph a photo selfie a handshake or hug and to be welcomed to feel that they ve helped make the celebrity who they are. Wildlife artist John Ruthven and former Bengal s football player Anthony Munoz clearly realize what they owe to those who love them. Writers Greg Hoard and Doug Sandhage have known these gentlemen for many years and based on feedback and personal observations feel that both deserve to be in a Celebrity Hall of Understanding. By Greg Hoard T he event was held at Saks Fifth Avenue. Outside fine automobiles jockeyed for position in the lines for valet parking. Winter was creeping in and wind gusts toyed with the obvious attempts to look smooth and smart. Inside Saks glittered. There was an open bar with top-shelf liquors. Cocktails were served in sturdy tumblers wine in long-stemmed glasses. Servers moved through the gathering quietly -- inconspicuously -- offering an array of canap s on silver serving dishes with cloth napkins. Even the air smelled preferred. A group of men were to be honored that evening recognized for their significant achievements and their contributions to the community. There were businessmen and entrepreneurs men of medicine and the law. For the most part it had the look and feel of so many similar events lots of smiles lots of handshaking polite applause -- all the amenities that come with success lives well spent and well rewarded. But off to the side of the stage and moments before the program began one man stood apart from the crowd separated from the masses by his sheer size 6-foot-6 pared down to a lean 240 pounds from his playing weight of 280 shoulders like a Mercedes-Benz and that unforgettable smile a smile that has always seemed grounded in some untouchable and personal contentment. Here was Anthony Munoz former Cincinnati Bengal member of the National Football League Hall of Fame and the man recognized WANT TO KNOW MORE Both John Ruthven (2010) and Anthony Munoz (2012) have been featured in-depth in prior issues of BEST Magazine. If you would like to read the stories in full go to www.bestmagazinecincinnati.com to view them. (continued on page 28) 57 GOOD GUY CELEBRITIES ou can easily see that the young man looking at wildlife artist John Ruthven s painting is puzzled. He asks John sitting just a few steps away how it was he was able to re-create such a scene and make the birds feel like you could reach out and touch them. John tells him with the passion he s told hundreds before how he was fly fishing on Monture Creek in Montana when four hawks decided that a crow in the same air space was uninvited. The canvas projects a vivid war of wings determined eyes aerial acrobatics flaring beaks all banded together as if actors knowing that this take will be their best. You can feel it. And as the young man said it was as if you were there. John Aldrich Ruthven appears never too busy to tell a story to shake a hand to give an autograph to thank those -- the new ones who have just discovered him the old ones who consider him their friend -- who have made his art among the most sought after of its kind in the United States. Last November The Cincinnati Nature Center hosted a 91st birthday celebration -- a meet and greet -- to honor the man whose passion cries nature. Scheduled for two hours at 60 minutes past that the CNC staff decided to walk John out to his car to wave to the nearly 100 visitors still in the receiving line and to hear them sing Happy Birthday to him. Till then John hugged and graciously greeted hundreds of others most of them handing him a homemade birthday card or a theme-appropriate store-bought kind a bird being the usual subject. OH MY GOSH John says this frequently a master in connecting with people usually in Dad-like tones welcoming them into his space. They ve come to hear first-hand about what subject he s painting next to listen about his search for the supposed long-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker how he expresses such an exacting detail in each of his works about presenting four U.S. Presidents portraits of his favorite -- The Bald Eagle and how he became a good friend with one of the world s most famous persons. Though exact opposites in how they approached celebrity-ism John and Neil Armstrong understood that to be called best at what they do it meant doing their best getting there. It was clear on this crisp November day that John is the nicest most honest sincere and most genuine celebrity these folks have likely ever met the one person they d most like to enjoy dinner with. And while some might think John only a regional celebrity the list of National Medal of Arts winners including John in 2004 is quite small. Not everybody gets to visit the Oval Office have a medal hung around their neck and shake the President s hand. To paint the official Ohio interpretation of Armstrong s landing on the moon. To have one of his Cardinal paintings adorn our state s license plates. To recently privately meet with the military chiefs of staff at the Pentagon to talk about well you know ships birds and such. John is a World War II Navy vet. A few feet away I watched this receiving line for more than 90 minutes. It reminded me of a wake only the name on the program is standing tall showcasing his infectious smile and acting as though his life has just begun not at all to ever end. John is approachable much in the same way so many of his feathered friends have allowed him to advance up close and personal to share their secrets. If animals could use facebook John would have a million likes. (continued on page 29) WHAT THE CARDS SAID With all my heart I am wishing you a great birthday.
