Another aspect is one that is too easily put on hold--exercise. Maybe it s because we ve heard that exercise is only a small part of weight loss that we don t give it the attention it deserves. It s easier to cut 1 000 calories from a bloated diet than to burn off 1 000 calories through exercise so why bother Last month the Cleveland Clinic which has been ranked the No. 1 hospital in the country for cardiology and cardiac surgery for 21 years in a row by US News & World Report stressed the role of exercise for heart health--even for those who have heart disease. To keep this important health information top-of-mind here is a discussion to start with your customers Exercise is one of the keys to preventing heart disease the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States but yet a Cleveland Clinic survey shows only 20 percent of Americans know how much exercise is recommended for a healthy heart. The survey also showed 40 percent of Americans are exercising less than that recommended amount--2.5 hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise. Most commonly people cited work obligations (41 percent) as the biggest factor preventing consumers from exercising more followed by being too tired (37 percent) and obligations with family and friends (28 percent). The survey found that men are considerably less likely than women to let things get in the way of their exercise routine. The survey also revealed large misconceptions when it comes to exercise and heart conditions. Only one-third of Americans knew that someone with heart disease needs to exercise the same amount as someone without heart disease. While heart patients should certainly consult with their doctor before beginning a new program they should be more worried about the effects of not exercising on their heart than exercising said Steve Nissen Publisher Daniel McSweeney Editorial Director DanM VRMmedia.com Associate Russ Fields Publisher RussF VRMmedia.com Advertising Gary Pfaff Sales Associate GaryP VRMmedia.com Editor-in-Chief Janet Poveromo JanetP VRMmedia.com W MD chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. Nearly all people with heart disease and without should exercise. It improves blood flow leads to lower blood pressure and will help you live longer. Additional survey findings include Weight the biggest motivating factor. According to those who exercise weekly 51 percent say that losing or maintaining weight is the No. 1 motivator. Only 32 percent of Americans say they exercise to benefit their hearts. Calories Americans don t know how much to burn. Despite most Americans exercising for weight purposes only 31 percent of those surveyed know they need to burn or cut out 500 calories from their diet to lose one pound a week. Cardiac rehabilitation benefits are known though it s underutilized. Most Americans (82 percent) realize that cardiac rehabilitation can reduce mortality rates from heart disease by about half. However typically less than a third of patients prescribed cardiac rehab complete it. Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program designed to improve health by identifying and reducing risk factors that lead to cardiovascular disease. Testing Who needs it While it s true that those with heart disease should talk to their doctor about starting an exercise program most Americans don t understand which patients actually need stress tests. Eighty-one percent of those surveyed incorrectly thought that someone with high cholesterol needs an exercise stress test before starting an exercise program. Heart disease kills about one in four Americans but many of these deaths could be prevented by simple lifestyle changes like exercising and improving diet Nissen said. Americans know exercise is important but most don t realize just how far a little exercise can go--potentially reducing the risk of dying from heart disease by as much as 40 to 50 percent. It s worth making time for it. The leaves of the moringa tree are more nutrient dense than kale and provide a complete plant protein similar to quinoa. Moringa seems to be an emergence of an old trend from a different continent said Amber Elliot buyer manager at Elliott s Natural Foods Sacramento CA. It s new to us but a traditional source of nutrition in other regions of the world. Curtis agreed and noted that though it is new to the Western world moringa has been used for centuries by other cultures and countries. Curtis volunteered in the Peace Corps in Niger in West Africa. After a few months of limited access to food she began experiencing early signs of malnutrition--a condition that affects more than 18 million children across West Africa she said. A friend suggested Curtis try moringa and handed her a bag of kuli-kuli a Hausa food made from peanuts to make a delicious nutty moringa dinner. After incorporating moringa into her diet Curtis said she began to regain her strength. At that point she saw a solution to the malnutrition and poverty around her in the moringa oleifera tree. There are more than 1 500 scientific studies about the nutritional benefits of moringa according to Curtis. Though much research remains to be done there has been promising research showing that moringa could be particularly helpful in lowering glucose levels for diabetic patients provide abundant and unique antioxidants to help cancer M BY CORINNE ANDERSON patients and help increase milk production for new mothers. Moringa Studies Research findings through human trials with moringa include a human trial by Giridhari et al. (2011). The administration of a moringa leaf tablet coupled with a calorie-controlled diet significantly reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic patients over three months. Two studies also found that infants who were breastfed by mothers who took moringa capsules gained weight faster and more consistently than those fed by mothers who did not use moringa (King et al 2013). In the U.S. moringa is primarily used in aiding malnutrition in the natural food industry Elliott shared. The leaves are densely packed with a variety of nutrients to address any deficits in an individuals diet. It has been referred to as a Nature s Multivitamin because of the many dense nutrients the plant provides. Consumer demand according to Elliott is evenly divided between encapsulated moringa and powder. More often than not the capsule tablet forms will be single ingredient extracts to get the full benefit while the powder is frequently a mix of moringa and other super foods for maximum nutrition. Moringa has been used as a supportive addition to whole-food based multivitamins and dietary shakes as well as being fairly popular in teas. The most common moringa brands in Image provided by Kuli-Kuli Elliott s store include Bio Nutrition moringa powder Elliott s Natural Foods brand capsules and Irwin Naturals liquid gels. Sales seem to be split evenly between all three options Elliott said. While private label companies don t always offer informational support Bio Nutrition and Irwin Naturals do provide shelf talkers flyers and occasionally educational articles for the purpose of educating customers Elliott continued. Kuli Kuli on the other hand is not limited in their product offerings. The company offers four product lines all of which are designed to be a convenient and tasty way for Americans to experience the benefits of moringa. Products include Superfood Bars that come in three flavors Crunchy Almond Black Cherry and Dark Chocolate. They are fruit and nutbased bars that are enriched with moringa. The company also offers its Pure Moringa Powder which can be used in smoothies yogurts and even brownies and cheesecake. Kuli Kuli s Energizing moringa Herbal Tea which is rich in antioxidants to eliminate free radicals and improve focus is also available Curtis said. It is as pure and restorative as the traditional tisanes that ancient cultures worldwide have been drinking for ages. So you can rehydrate and relax all in one cup. And recently Kuli Kuli launched its Moringa Green Energy Shots. They come in three flavors Coconut Lime Ginger Lemon and Raspberry. Each shot contains a cup of caffeine that is derived from green tea and leafy greens. Essentially Curtis said it is a caffeinated green smoothie. The U.S. market for functional foods or so-called super foods is estimated at 38 billion and growing 7 percent annually Curtis added. The success of quinoa acai chia and kale has proven that super foods are not only popular they have created a profitable durable new category. At the same time a recent Hartman Group poll found that the number one nutritious food category that U.S. consumers seek to increase is vegetable closely followed by fiber calcium plant-based proteins and iron. As a leafy green vegetable high in fiber calcium iron and protein moringa is perfectly positioned to fulfill this growing market need Curtis concluded. The email also announced that the NPA filed claims in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against 10 current and former members of the Board of Directors of the NPA. NPA s court filing describes a pattern of conduct by these individuals that sought to undermine NPA s ability to do its work for their personal whims and nothing more. While no one likes litigation NPA needed to take this action for the association to protect itself Fabricant said in the email. In addition recent allegations made against NPA by the same former employee are false and they will ultimately fail as NPA has asserted in a separate court filing. NPA will continue to vigorously defend itself. In December Brent Weickert NPA s former CFO filed a lawsuit against the NPA and Fabricant. Represented by Kathleen M. Hartman Esq. of Callahan Thompson Sherman & Caudill LLP Irvine CA the suit listed complaints including wrongful termination in violation of public policy retaliation in violation of FEHA (Fair Employment and Housing Act) intentional infliction of emotional distress failure to pay vested vacation time failure to prevent discrimination harassment and retaliation in violation of FEHA religious and sexual harassment-hostile work environment in O violation of FEHA and more. Exhibits listed by the NPA included emails between Weickert and other members of the board credit card statements social media feeds of Weickert emails between Fabricant and Weickert and more. Weickert was employed by NPA from September 2 1997 until October 15 2015 as the senior vice president chief financial officer working out of an office in Paso Robles CA according to the summons. He alleged that Fabricant created a hostile work environment at NPA and misused funds. According to CEOUpdate.com Weickert wrote a letter to Board President Roxanne Green in May 2015. The letter advised NPA about multiple issues including that Fabricant s drinking had become excessive and that his abusive behavior had driven away multiple female employees. Green said in a statement We will vigorously defend the case and are confident we will prevail. We have the utmost confidence in Dr. Fabricant and his ability to continue leading the organization which he has helped to expand modernize and strengthen the natural products industry. Marc Ullman Esq. of counsel to Rivkin Radler LLP stated Now that I ve had the chance to look at the initial complaint and the counter-complaint I feel as though it is a lot of sour grapes from some board members who are used to running the ship when NPA had some weak leadership. I experienced firsthand the incompetence. NPA had become rudderless because of two very weak executives before him [Fabricant]. CEOUpdate.com reported on a motion to dismiss filed in January that NPA countered the filed charges noting that Weickert was an at-will employee who was properly terminated for several reasons Faced with a budget shortfall the executive committee determined it would be cheaper to outsource his job functions. Also Weickert working from his home in California was not necessarily efficient or prudent from a control and reporting standpoint the article detailed. The motion stated that Weickert never witnessed the harassment of female employees personally and therefore cannot seek damages for a hostile work environment. Even in the face of the structural challenges that existed prior to my arrival NPA is stronger than it has ever been Fabricant said in the member email. NPA has re-established itself as the most effective advocate for defending your business. Look no further than the re-introduction of the FSA HSA Bill our work on the recent Frontline story our numerous grassroots victories from last year and the plethora of comments we have submitted over the past 19 months. Other organizations may focus on hosting an event or show or holding a meeting to stroke egos. But at the end of the day when the industry s back is against the wall--whether in Congress state legislatures regulatory agencies attorneys general or in court--it has always been and will continue to be NPA that saves the day. AHPA Submits Comments to Improve Dietary Supplement Label Database T he American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) submitted recommendations to improve the federal government s Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) to better inform supplement consumers. The DSLD is a joint project of the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and provides images of supplement product labels and information about the listed products in numerous fields. AHPA continues to encourage members that market dietary supplement products under their own brands to submit labels for inclusion in the Dietary Supplement Label Database 14 VITAMIN RETAILER because so many AHPA members have a strong interest in the database functioning effectively to provide users with accurate labels and other information about dietary supplements said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. To better inform consumers AHPA recommends improvements be made to the accuracy of database entries and that the database be redesigned to provide only currently marketed labels. AHPA recommended several changes to improve numerous database functions including organization and content label sources foreign products and labels submitted by supplement marketers. Some of the recommendations included archiving labels for products that are no longer available for purchase in the U.S. removing any labels identified by the brand owner as erroneous DSLD only display actual product labels and to remove product obtained by other sources refrain from listing products not labeled for marketing in the U.S. and that the disclaimer on the DSLD website be modified to make it consistent with FDA s (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) Online Label Repository. The current disclaimer could confuse consumers by unnecessarily calling into question regulatory compliance of labels included in the DSLD McGuffin said. For more information visit ahpa.org. This past fall Marketplace commissioned lab testing for samples of fish oil vitamin C and protein powder supplements to see if consumers are actually getting what they pay for. Based on those test results Marketplace reported that Emergen-C and two protein powders GNC Lean Shake 25 and Cytosport Muscle Milk did not match their label claims. However after re-testing the samples it was A found that the lab results and analysis provided to Marketplace were incorrect and that there is no evidence of problems with those products. The original lab tests were performed by an independent lab in Michigan which is ISO-17025 accredited registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and used by the supplement industry. According to the CBC News story the lab was recommended by Neil Thanedar co-founder and CEO of LabDoor a company that has products tested and makes those results public to help guide consumers about vitamins and supplements. Thanedar agreed to analyze the test results for Marketplace and the supplement companies strong disputed the results. Proposal by California Regulators Could Limit Consumer Access he Natural Products Association (NPA) criticized a product labeling proposal by California regulators that would restrict consumers access to products slow job creation and hurt the economy. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is currently considering making changes to the way certain products including dietary supplements and other natural products are labeled in the State of California. This proposal would be a boon for trial lawyers at the cost of consumers small businesses and the economy T said Dr. Daniel Fabricant executive director and CEO of NPA. Moving forward with this proposal will restrict access to products and make them more expensive for consumers. NPA strongly encourages regulators to consider the negative unintended consequences this rule could have on consumers and the overall business climate in California. Areas of clarification and recommendations outlined by NPA in its comments to OEHHA can be found in detail on their website. Thirty-five leaders in the natural products industry and members of Organic & Natural attended. Organic & Natural Health s CEO and executive director Karen Howard announced the board s concluding assessment on the issue of defining natural saying that the term natural should not be used in the form of a certification or seal and therefore should not be listed on product labels. It should only be used as a term to describe specific attributes of products in marketing and promotional materials. Our research clearly shows that the majority of consumers do not differentiate between natural and organic and expect products labeled natural to also be organic. So after careful consideration we determined that introducing a new natural certification seal would not be in the best interest of consumers and could contribute to further confusion said Howard. At this O juncture encouraging people to go organic is more important so we will focus on to the existing organic certification seal and do whatever we can to strengthen that program. As a first step Organic & Natural Health will support the work on Organic 3.0 that IFOAM Organics International is leading to make organic the leading innovation towards sustainability in agriculture and healthy products for consumers. She said the organization is also looking at creative ways to make information more accessible to the public about how to identify organic and natural products through personal technology devices. Consumers expect organic standards from any product that claims to be natural so we have to make organic better said Howard. Natural is not a label claim and we will stand by that position as we continue to educate consumers about the importance of organic food choices and why it matters for their health. While the NPA (Natural Products Association) was the only association interviewed to defend the industry I was taken aback by some things stated by Dr. Paul Offit pediatrician and director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHoP). He mentioned that supplements are so awful that they can even harm you and increase your risk for heart disease and cancer. His vitriol continued as he said they have removed supplements from their own formulary. If you don t know what a formulary is it is a list of medications broken down by category that a hospital carries to treat their patient population. The list is continually revised and updated to ensure patients receive optimal health care with the best standards of practice available. Before a medication is added or deleted from the hospital formulary teams of doctors pharmacists and nurses evaluate these products to ensure that they are safe work well and are cost-effective. And hospitals don t add things to their formulary unless there is good evidence behind them. Hospitals and physicians graduated from their old practice of applying experience and judgement to applying evidencebased medicine and clinical trials on ingredients since the late 1980s. The issue I have with Offit s comments is whether he is being open and completely transparent about exactly how many supplements are on CHoP s formulary. I don t think the answer is zero. While a hospital s formulary is a closely held secret most hospitals will carry supplements because they are efficacious and doctors use some off-label as adjuvants with medications. Even Offit admitted that 35 supplements met his hospital s criteria (more on that point later). When survey respondents were queried about the factors leading them to carry the dietary supplements on their formularies 95 percent affirmed their selection by their pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committee process 94 percent chose safety data and 93 percent indicated clinical evidence of efficacy as a determining factor. multivitamins omega-3s probiotics and folic acid to name a few. A survey of National Association of Children s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) hospitals in 2008 found that most formularies (99 percent) in pediatric hospitals include the basics of vitamins and minerals. While only 2 percent of NACHRI hospitals surveyed in the study carried herbal supplements nearly 40 percent carried other dietary supplements including fish oil probiotics melatonin chondroitin and glucosamine. The other factors included availability of a standardized product (84 percent) physician demand (77 percent) cost (62 percent) proof of product quality (58 percent) patient demand (50 percent) and whether third-party reimbursement would cover the dietary supplement (25 percent). In fact dietary supplement use in hospital formularies is recognized by powerful organizations such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Joint Commission. ASHP s Statement on the Use of Dietary Supplements is a valuable source of guidance regarding the review of dietary supplements for formulary inclusion. Dietary supplements must undergo a formulary review process at least as rigorous as that for prescription and nonprescription drugs. In other words the inclusion of any product in a health system s formulary dietary supplement or other is based on comparative data concerning efficacy safety cost and the potential for drug-dietary supplement interactions. The Joint Commission also looks at dietary supplements as drugs in their guidance for hospitals despite the fact that they are not regulated as drugs but rather a special category of food with far greater regulatory rigors than conventional foods. Joint Commission like ASHP evaluates supplements under the evidentiary rigors of drugs. In their Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals Joint Commission defines a medication as any prescription medication sample medication herbal remedies vitamins nutraceuticals over-thecounter drugs vaccines diagnostic and contrast agents ... used on or administered to a person to diagnose treat or prevent disease or other abnormal conditions. Therefore the Joint Commission expects hospitals to analyze dietary supplement use in accordance with their claimed use and thorough documentation with evidence for that intended use. Hospital Standards Let s look at the standard of care in hospitals. What if ob gyn departments failed to offer folic acid dietary supplements to women to prevent neural tube defects Folic acid (neural WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 Found in Formularies To meet a standard of care most hospitals will carry iron calcium 28 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com goodhealthnaturally for info about this advertiser NPAUPDATE tube defects) fiber from psyllium husk (reduced risk of coronary heart disease) and calcium vitamin D supplements (for osteoporosis) are backed by science to make health claims meeting FDA s (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) significant scientific agreement (SSA). What about the FDA s allowance for a qualified health claim for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids based upon its own independent review of fish oil data There are even hospitals that use omega-3 fatty acid nutritional supplements as a healthy way to maximize exposure to fat-soluble drugs like posaconazole a potent antifungal. What if a health care provider needed to treat a child for iron deficiency where ketogenic diet was a concern I would think that having a sorbitol-free iron sulfate supplement on formulary would be a standard of care. Evidence also suggests that H2 blockers and protonpump inhibitors (PPIs) two of the most prescribed drugs on the planet can disrupt the microbial flora and lead to severe adverse effects lower down the gastrointestinal tract. In short they enable bacteria ingested with our food to survive the normally harsh pH environment of the stomach and allow pathogenic bacteria to colonize the intestinal tract. Probiotic supplements containing bifido and other beneficial bacteria are often prescribed in both inpatient and outpatient settings to help counter growth of bad bacteria. Supplements are neither a substitute for a good diet nor an alternative for medications. They are a food intended to supplement the diet to meet the nutritional needs and requirements of consumers. But let s face it most of us don t eat enough broccoli or consume enough fish to derive a sufficient benefit from eating healthy foods alone. Many of us myself included take a multivitamin or other supplement safely each day. Just like all health-related decisions anyone considering taking a dietary supplement should first consult with their health care provider. It is important that people know what they are putting into their bodies and there are laws for labeling requirements in place to ensure 30 VITAMIN RETAILER consumers get the information they need. Personal responsibility is also an important factor anytime someone is making decisions about their health and NPA strongly encourages consumers to be wary of products that make outrageous or too good to be true claims. There are even hospitals that use omega-3 fatty acid nutritional supplements as a healthy way to maximize exposure to fat-soluble drugs like posaconazole a potent antifungal. What if a health care provider needed to treat a child for iron deficiency where ketogenic diet was a concern I would think that having a sorbitol-free iron sulfate supplement on formulary would be a standard of care. And when the detractors beat their tired drum that supplements are unsafe and unregulated what they mean is that supplements are not regulated like drugs. One reason supplements are safe is because they are regulated by the FDA. FDA has the tools to enforce against unsafe products and they have. FDA can and should pull any product off the shelf it deems to be unsafe and the agency has done just that in some cases. Not only can the FDA pull a product that has already gone to market but the agency can also block (and has blocked) the movement to market of products it determines might be unsafe for the general public. The FDA may also enter into consent decree agreements with firms to stop the sale of products. The FDA has and continues to enjoin manufacturers shutting them down or seizing products that do not meet the current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs) the required quality standard all dietary supplement manufacturers must meet. These products are well made by responsible manufacturers and have and should play an important role in improving America s health nutrition and wellness. Are supplements regulated similarly to drugs The dietary supplement cGMPs were developed from FDA s drug GMPs so in some respects dietary supplements are regulated like drugs. Dietary supplements are also the only commodity of food for which mandatory serious adverse event reporting is a requirement. When you compare serious adverse events reported to the FDA for supplements prescription drugs and conventional foods supplements are by far safer than drugs and even conventional foods. So you can either listen to the beat of that old drum that supplements are an unsafe unregulated commodity or you can combat the tired rhetoric with the fact that 180 million Americans safely use dietary supplements on a daily basis and they are regulated by FDA. How many supplements does your local hospital carry on formulary Better yet how many supplements does Dr. Offit s hospital carry at CHoP The truth is that dietary supplements play an important role in the management of a variety of diseases as evidenced by their inclusion in numerous hospital formularies and the decision to include these products is not made lightly but is supported by scientific literature and a thorough safety review. The findings were published in the online issue of PLOS One. These results suggest that much of the burden of leukemia worldwide is due to the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency we are experiencing in winter in populations distant from the equator said Cedric Garland DrPH adjunct professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health and member of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. People who live in areas with low solar ultraviolet B exposure tend to have low levels of vitamin D metabolites in their blood Garland said. These low levels place them at high risk of certain cancers including leukemia. Few foods are natural sources of vita- E min D which is more abundantly produced when ultraviolet radiation from sunlight strikes the skin and triggers synthesis. According to the American Cancer Society 54 270 cases and 24 450 deaths from leukemia occur in the United States alone each year. There is no known way to prevent most types of leukemia though some types may be prevented by avoiding high doses of ionizing radiation exposure to the chemical benzene smoking and certain types of chemotherapy. The UC San Diego study analyzed age-adjusted incidence rates of leukemia in 172 countries from GLOBOCAN an international agency for research on cancer that is part of the World Health Organization comparing that information with cloud cover data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project. The study follows similar investigations by Garland and colleagues of other cancers including breast colon pancreas bladder and multiple myeloma. In each study they found that reduced UVB radiation exposure and lower vitamin D levels were associated with higher risks of cancer. Leukemia rates were highest in countries relatively closer to the poles such as Australia New Zealand Chile Ireland Canada and the United States. They were lowest in countries closer to the equator such as Bolivia Samoa Madagascar and Nigeria. These studies do not necessarily provide final evidence said Garland but they have been helpful in the past in identifying associations that have helped minimize cancer risk. B12 Deficiency a Concern for Long-term Care high proportion of older adults entering long-term care homes in Ontario Canada are B12 deficient with more developing deficiencies over the course of their first year in residence according to research from the University of Waterloo. There is a connection between B12 deficiency and several serious health conditions. Researchers found that almost 14 percent of study participants were B12 deficient at the time of admission to a long-term care home while another 38 percent had only slightly better levels. Over the course of one year an additional 4 percent developed B12 deficiencies. However those receiving supplements had better B12 levels. The study conducted in partnership with the Schlegel-University of Waterloo Research Institute for Aging (RIA) and published in Applied Physiology Nutrition and Metabolism suggests a simple yearly blood test could be the key to elimi- A nating B12 deficiencies among elderly living in long-term care homes. In Ontario there is currently no systematic screening system to identify B12 deficiencies among long-term care residents--at the time of admission or afterward. The negative effects of a B12 deficiency are considerable said Heather Keller a professor of kinesiology at Waterloo and Schlegel Research Chair in Nutrition and Aging. This is of particular importance in the context of our aging population with more Canadians requiring long-term care. Untreated B12 deficiency will eventually lead to anemia and neurologic complications such as unsteady gait and paralysis. Low levels of the vitamin have been found to be associated with depression and dementia increased confusion lethargy and even osteoporosis. In spending time in long-term care homes you often see depression and loneliness. This is why we need to do everything in our power to enhance quality of life and quality of care in this setting said Kaylen Pfisterer lead author on the paper and assistant research coordinator at the RIA. Screening for B12 deficiency is a first step to targeting B12 treatment to those who may benefit most. A blood test would allow health care practitioners to screen for a B12 deficiency among new residents and if performed annually monitor vitamin levels throughout the resident s time in long-term care improving overall health and well-being. Developing your team to increase your sales. By Terry Lemerond ave you ever been in a store and needed to ask a question but no one came over to help you Maybe you saw a couple of employees chatting by the registers or looking at their phones totally oblivious to what was going on around them. Then you finally tracked someone down and he or she couldn t answer your question. Did you buy from that store When I first started in the business more than 45 years ago consumers didn t have many options for purchasing dietary supplements. A local drugstore might stock a few multivitamins but for more than that consumers would have to find a health food store. But that s changed. You can find supplements on countless websites. Many big box stores also sell a variety of supplements. What sets successful health food stores apart is their ability to provide knowledgeable customer service that builds lasting relationships with H customers. And retailers can t do that effectively if they don t invest in educating their employees. Go Team Go Your team is your most valuable asset. Of course you need to hire good people but it doesn t end there. People starting out in retail don t automatically have good customer service and sales skills. Even those with years of experience may have inadequate training. Plus in our industry it s essential that your employees have wide-ranging knowledge on health and wellness as well as understand what they can and can t say about the dietary supplements you sell from a legal standpoint. That s a lot to learn--and a lot to teach. How do you even know where to start If you re lucky and you treat your employees right they might stick with you for a long time. But turnover is inevitable. Or maybe your happy prob- lem is that you re growing and you need to hire even more people. If you just wing it when it comes to training those new employees you re doing your business a disservice. You ll miss something important or create confusion among your staff because everyone has been taught a little differently. It s important to develop a standard training plan for new employees and put it into practice each time you hire someone new. Outline what needs to be covered and in what order. Give time estimates for the training so you ll know what to budget when you re managing shift schedules. Determine how the training will happen. Will you facilitate all the training Will some experienced people on your staff take some parts Will you use outside resources for this initial training Perhaps you use videos to teach certain training topics inventory management. Put it all in your training plan. Obviously it will enhance your team s skills. That can also lead to increased sales as your employees learn new ways to work with customers or talk about your products. The right training will also help them build better relationships with your customers and with coworkers. Training your employees can actually reduce turnover and improve their satisfaction with their jobs. It helps them feel engaged and committed to your business. Investing in their development shows you care about them. Let s dive a little deeper into the types of training your employees need focusing on hard skills product and industry knowledge and soft skills. Your customers will learn to rely on your people for recommendations on the right products for their specific health needs. At the same time if your team can t intelligently answer questions about dietary supplements while also staying within the bounds of structure function language you re putting your business at risk both financially and legally. Soft skills development is important for everyone on your team including yourself. These skills are essential for engaging your customers and giving them the best service possible. Soft skills training can encompass a wide variety of topics such as interpersonal skills and time management but for a retail store the most important are customer service and selling skills. You ll want to do some of this training yourself. For example you ll instruct your team on how you want your customers greeted when they come in the store. Providing additional training can pay big dividends. Training does cost money. The best employees devote some of their own free time to self-development but you can t require employees to train on their own time. Legally you have to pay them for training time. I won t get into all the labor laws here but be sure you know what s required in your state. Regardless consider the money you invest in your employees as money well spent. At the same time the training itself doesn t have to cost you a lot of cash. There are many opportunities for free and low-cost training. It just takes a little research to find what s out there. All you need for a lot of training is a computer with an internet connection and speakers or headphones. Webbased product and industry training is common and runs the gamut from short product-focused training that various manufacturers provide to weeklong events offered by trade-based groups well-known industry thought leaders or other organizations. Some are offered at specific times and dates while other trainings can be accessed on demand. You ll find plenty of free options but also consider quality educational offerings that charge fees for enrollment especially for your high-performing team members. You can also find a lot of free softskills training resources on the internet. A quick search will locate lots of options from articles and blog posts that you can use as the basis for a short discussion at a team meeting to professional videos posted on YouTube. Make sure you evaluate after web-based training to find out which sessions were high impact and which might have been a bit ho-hum. This way you can continue to refine your list of the best web offerings that are pertinent to your organization. You might decide to send some employees to outside training. Various organizations offer workshops throughout the country. Some are connected to trade shows some are stand-alone conferences or events while others may be offered locally through a college or other organization. Costs for these can vary. Your local chamber of commerce or small business association may also offer workshops or lunch and learns. And don t forget to tap into the resources available at the local tech school or university. Many of these are free or available at low cost. One more thing It s okay if some of your employees know more than you do. In fact you should be happy to have a staff that s so well educated. They ll be able to answer customer questions without having to rely on you. Plus they ll feel confident in the job they re doing and be more engaged in serving your customers. That means loyal customers happy employees and you might just be able to rest easy when you re not in the store. Hire people smarter than yourself and give them room to operate to be successful. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 Make No Assumptions Your employees can t be productive without learning hard skills--like running the cash register or stocking shelves. In fact teaching hard skills may be the first thing you think about when it comes to training your team and it s an important part of the onboarding process for a new employee. It s also important to not make assumptions about what a new employee knows. For example even if someone ran a cash register at their last job it may have been very automated. It s possible they never learned the proper way to count back change to a customer. Make sure you teach your employees the best practices that are important to your business. Some people seem to be born salespeople. They re usually great talkers who make friends easily. But they still need to understand your products and the industry if you want them to be successful employees. If you just give them a packet of materials to read you may be setting them up for failure. With the spread of misinformation on the internet and the complicated regulatory environment of our industry our customers may have a lot of questions. It s important for your team to be able to provide the legitimate information they need. A good salesperson will challenge assumptions something an online retailer or big box store just can t do. That s where training your employees will pay big dividends. 36 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com topicalbiomedics for info about this advertiser More gluten- and allergen-free options are being launched to not only cater to consumers with celiac or food allergies--but to provide a higher level of clean safety than ever. By Lisa Schofield id you know there are people who can touch a poison ivy plant and not suffer from horrific itching That s because the itch response is an individual allergic response. But there may not be a human alive who does not have a single allergy--or sensitivity--to anything. That person who can frolic in a poison ivy patch and not feel a thing may have celiac disease. Dietary supplement research and development teams have been working diligently with suppliers and processors to formulate a widening berth of supplements that incur no side effects born from sensitivity or allergens. And when it comes to gluten we know by now it is not a buzzword and it is by no means a fad. Not only is gluten free the necessary choice for those with celiac disease (CD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) it is also a conscious choice considered to be cleaner. Natural practitioner Robert Kachko 38 VITAMIN RETAILER D ND LAc of New York-based Inner Source Natural Health and Acupuncture described why more people are being diagnosed with CD and NCGS. Gluten sensitivity has become seemingly ubiquitous because more practitioners especially naturopathic physicians or integrative practitioners are looking for it in their patient he said. Celiac disease is a severe destruction of the small intestine from an immune reaction to components found in wheat barley rye and occasionally oats. Eliminating gluten and watching for symptom reduction is often noticeably helpful leading to diagnoses of NCGS. NCGS on the other hand may present in a myriad of ways that often are non-specific Kachko continued. This means that symptoms may manifest which can also come from other disorders. The most common symptoms he noted are mood disturbances such as depression or anxiety difficulty concentrating as in ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and foggy brain digestive issues (abdominal pain bloating nausea diarrhea constipation) and pain (joints headache) and fatigue. When some customers--who may suspect they have celiac sensitivity (NCGS) but haven t seen a natural practitioner--ask you what s best try creating a poster with the headline Do You Feel These You May be GlutenSensitive. Ask Us and list the symptoms. Those who ask may be referred to your naturopath of choice as well as any of the safe gluten-free supplements. Kachko explained that NCGS is rather easy to test for with a few simple blood tests (the same as the ones done to rule out celiac disease-- though celiac disease often requires more invasive diagnostic tests to be clearly ruled out)--that are typically covered by insurance. On occasion a WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2014 Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 systematic elimination diet may be useful and even necessary as an alternative when blood work is negative but the patient presents with a clinical picture indicative of gluten sensitivity he said. Consumers are definitely concerned about gluten and other substances that may trigger a host of reactions. Shannon Hoffmann president of Green Acres Markets (Kansas Missouri Oklahoma) observed that The awareness is definitely growing. It is not however as developed as with foods. But as consumers begin to eliminate harsh chemicals fillers binders and preservatives from their supplements they find themselves next asking about allergy free and gluten free as well-- just to be safe. This is true especially if they have already made dietary adjustments. At Paradise Health & Nutrition in Florida consumer awareness and concern over gluten and allergen-free dietary supplements is definitely a growing category reported Tom Sokoloff president. We are seeing more and more consumers turning to allergy-free foods to see if it improves their health and or improves a health challenge they are dealing with he stated. Debbie Cerankowski of Debbie s Health Foods Florida pointed to the success of the groundbreaking books Wheat Belly and Grain Brain which have motivated more and more people to become aware of what gluten free is. Also the GF (gluten free) symbol is even in the mass market. Consumers are coming to us every day for gluten free products but not only gluten free food and supplements but deodorant shampoo and make up she commented. Whether the supplement you consider bringing to your shelves says gluten free or allergen free there are frequently numerous steps of rigid testing involved. Ryan Sensenbrenner marketing manager Enzymedica based in Florida opined that when launching a new product manufacturers have a responsibility to consider their entire supply chains. Often issues that arise are due to not having transparency in the production of their raw materials. Thirdparty GMP (good manufacturing practice) certification from agencies such as NSF International are crucial for establishing best practices of quality he said. To ensure compliance with the Food MARCH 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM and Drug Administration s (FDA) cGMP regulations Sensenbrenner noted that Enzymedica maintains GMP certification via biannual audits from NSF. New York-based American BioSciences insists that all its suppliers provide certificates of analysis of all ingredients with allergen testing according to David Wales president. The company also incorporates standard operating procedures (SOPs) to eliminate potential cross contamination between ingredients plus third-party testing services to confirm allergen levels in products it labels as free of that allergens. Our primary concern is with gluten and although the FDA will allow us to label products with less than 20 ppm of gluten as gluten free we use the most sensitive tests that enable us to ensure that our gluten-free products contain less than 5 ppm Wales offered. He added that American BioSciences works closely with scientists who understand the research demonstrating the connection between allergies immune function quality of life and the development and progression of serious illnesses. Several years ago the company ensured that its signature supplements--ImmPower SugarSolve FlexSolve DigestSolve--along with others (except its fermented wheat germ extract) were gluten free. Raw Materials At North American Herb and Spice (NAHS) Illinois Judy Gray president and founder noted that conscientious manufacturers are cognizant that gluten is a major concern for a significant portion of the population. Therefore all NAHS products are gluten free and as allergen free as possible she noted. The company controls its sources of ingredients by handgathering raw wild materials from wilderness throughout the world Gray said. Thus raw materials are carefully monitored from the beginning to the end of production and any gluten or gluten-allergenic sources are never used. NAHS never uses toxic substances such as alcohol propylene glycol benzene acetone titanium dioxide and hexane she explained. Plus all NAHS products are free of fillers binders and flow agents such as magnesium stearate and talc. There are no artificial sweeteners flavorings colorings or shellacs of any kind in any of the supplements. Instead real whole organic and wild foods are the sources. Enzymedica offers a wide range of products for people who have food intolerance. According to Sensenbrenner one of the company s best-selling products is Digest Spectrum said to be one of the only supplements on the market that support all of the major intolerances. Unlike celiac or food allergies individuals may find relief from intolerances by taking digestive enzyme supplements which break down problematic foods he said. Intolerances by definition are deficiencies of the enzymes needed to digest a type of food. Enzymedica also offers products specific to different food groups. GlutenEase Extra Strength contains protease and DPP-IV enzymes to break down both gluten and casein. And the company s Lacto contains lactase and eight other enzymes that work synergistically to digest dairy sugars proteins and fats. Essential Formulas of Texas has a new line of gluten-free products Reg Activ that will reportedly stimulate the body s production of master antioxidant glutathione reported Alexandra Charles director of education. Additionally the company s Dr. Ohhira line is all gluten free. American BioSciences has just introduced Metatrol a potent fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) dietary supplement and reportedly the only one which is gluten free Wales noted. Although many physicians recommend FWGE because of extensive research showing it supports regulation of cell metabolism and immune function it naturally contains gluten so not everyone can take it. American BioSciences developed technology that concentrates the bioactive fraction of FWGE (called FWGE-SC) and discards the non-active molecules including gluten. Just 41 mg of FWGE-SC is bioequivalent to 5 500 mg of FWGE so the daily VITAMIN RETAILER 39 dose of gluten-free Metatrol is much easier to take said Wales. In Charles viewpoint today s retailers are in tune with the natural product industry and their customers so they know that these issues are extremely important. Consumers are educated and are asking the hard questions and the retailers are helping them make an educated choice she said. According to Sensenbrenner Enzymedica s retailers are tremendously passionate about food intolerance and work diligently to educate their customers about these and other digestive issues. He reported that Enzymedica just completed a food intolerance contest where retailers around the country have developed their own end-caps that offer intolerance-friendly foods and supplements. Some of the submissions we ve received have been spectacular and have gone above and beyond what we could have hoped for this program he remarked. We have also worked with retailers who wished to brand their entire store concept around food intolerance. One example of such a store is Marietta Health Foods in Georgia. There are some challenges inherent in any growing category niche and the sector of gluten- and allergy-free supplements has a few according to manufacturers. Wales believes that gluten-free and other allergen-free products are perceived by consumers as being expensive. However he asserted they are almost always of higher quality made with higher purity ingredients and more exacting quality control standards necessary to ensure they are indeed free of potential allergens. Additionally there are also some retailers Wales has spoken with who still feel that this category notably gluten-free may still be a fad. However research is showing that the prevalence of food allergies is increasing due to unknown causes he noted. Retail Opportunity Sensenbrenner agreed. Food intolerances he said significantly impact tens of millions of individuals in the United States. Often however people don t realize that their digestive issues are tied to the food that they eat he said. Retailers have an opportunity to offer consultative services with their customers to help them identify food intolerances and to establish a protocol to minimize symptoms which may include elimination diets or enzyme supplementation. Retailers should be encouraged to actively promote their expertise in food intolerance with their customers and to display signage and literature educating them on the differences between intolerance and allergies. He added that Enzymedica offers free signage to its retailers customized with their logos and available in multiple sizes to create food intolerance sets. Enzymedica branding is de-emphasized on these materials because we really want to encourage retailers to display a variety of food and supplements WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com geniuscentral for info about this advertiser 40 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com vibrant for info about this advertiser Sensenbrenner noted. Essential Formulas Charles observed that some products don t have enough room on their label to make gluten free prominent enough for customers to notice while scanning shelves. She suggested Creating gluten-free tags to place with the objects on sales would make it much easier for customers to spot them when shopping. Paradise Health & Nutrition sponsors a weekly live radio show broadcast and features this topic from time to time and brand partners have been supportive with extensive training for staff Sokoloff said. The store also features signage in the front windows and shelf talkers to alert shoppers to the allergen-friendly foods and supplements. It s common for our staff that once we learn a customer has food sensitivities we walk them around to all the departments to point out their choices. Many are amazed by the fact there is so much variety in this category. You can sense they are relieved that switching to this lifestyle is not so difficult after all he commented. At Green Acres the staff goes through training with the vendors and also speaks to their customers to find out their priorities and needs so that they may be directed to the most suitable products. We don t just promote a line because we want to Hoffman emphasized. We offer choices to provide the best fit for each individual. Unlike a clear-cut sector such as stress anxiety or cardiovascular this category can be quite expansive as any supplement can now be allergenand gluten free. This brings up the question of best display practices. Because gluten allergy free products can span from probiotics to multivitamins to immune support supplements creating a separate category may be confusing to the customer coming in for a specific type of supplement remarked Essential Formulas Charles. I think creating Gluten or Allergy Free tags to put by the products that fit would be the best way to streamline shopping for customers with those health concerns. Rather than gluten free Sensenbrenner said Enzymedica recommends retailers create comprehensive food intolerance categories and endcaps because while many Americans are gluten intolerant often individuals with one intolerance are actually intolerant to multiple food types like lactose casein and phenols. With the strong media attention around food intolerance retailers have the opportunity to brand themselves as food intolerance resources for their communities and reach a large audience rather than limit themselves specifically to gluten he stated. More specifically Sensenbrenner explained these food intolerance sets can bring together products from a variety of categories within the health food store. Retailers should consider incorporating their best-selling intolerance-friendly foods and supplements into these sets. This type of cross-merchandising encourages repeat store visits and can increase basket size at the register he said. Wales believes that hunting for these supplements and having to read all the fine print on the labels is tedious. As a consumer he said he much prefers to find them all in one spot but most of my retailer friends would find it impractical to have a buyer just for allergenfree products. Debbie s Health Foods said Cerankowski has a huge selection of gluten-free and allergy-free supplements and groceries and has dedicated significant space in its food and makeup aisles along with six freezer doors of space. It was bothering me years ago when parents would bring their children in to see the gluten-free food and they had to go all over the store and with packaging the way it is being so colorful the children would see and want the wrong things she related. That made us decide to put it all in one section so it would be easier for everyone. Sokoloff summarized Independent retailers like myself and others are always looking for niche areas like this in a growing and competitive market. Early on I kept hearing that the gluten-free lifestyle is just another fad that will quickly fad away. By Janet Poveromo or 25 years Texas-based Bluebonnet Nutrition has led the way on producing supplements as close to nature as possible with a commitment to full transparency since inception. According to the company right from the start its primary mission has been to provide the cleanest most wholesome supplement brand on the market using only natural ingredients--many high-quality branded ingredients (and natural excipients only when absolutely necessary) with no fillers or binders and with as few allergens in its formulas as possible. That commitment to quality and purity has only gotten stronger through the years. Bluebonnet has pushed the transparency envelope by not just saying natural but demonstrating such on each and every label with clean-label symbols (e.g. kosher USDA [U.S. Department of Agriculture] Organic non-GMO [genetically modified organism] gluten free soy free milk lactose free sustainably harvested F third party tested etc.) resulting in a line that has a broad range of sustainable organic non-GMO whole food and whole food-based supplements. Commitment to Quality Bluebonnet s journey started 25 years ago with the single mission to provide the purest cleanest highest quality nutritional supplements available exclusively in natural food stores said Gary Barrows the company president and founder. This meant delivering a scientifically based line that used natural ingredients instead of synthetics which were popular at the time we opened our doors. That would require that its supplements were free of unnatural excipients and most allergens. This was revolutionary at the time since we used natural inactive ingredients only when absolutely necessary to help in the manufacturing process and fully disclosed both excipients and allergens on our labels well before it was even required by law he explained. Our undivided attention to quality and full transparency resonated with natural food retailers and their consumers Gary Barrows recalled. Because of our shared integrity passion and vision we were a perfect fit. Additionally we made a very large investment to build our own state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and on-site quality control laboratories to produce and test our premium products throughout the manufacturing process. For Bob Barrows Gary s brother and Bluebonnet s vice president of sales and marketing quality means everything. In our industry everyone talks quality but few truly demonstrate it. We understand that question because our quest to develop the highest quality dietary supplements on the market was the driving force for the inception of Bluebonnet 25 years ago. All companies claim quality but what sets Bluebonnet apart is our ability to show and prove our quality. As an example he pointed out that rolling out kosher over a decade ago did not come easy. If it did he said there would be far more kosher-certified supplement brands on the market. From being one of the first companies to produce KOF-K kosher-certified products to using vegetable capsules in place of gelatin to sourcing and integrating so many branded raw materials in our products allow us a unique advantage in terms of quality. And of course manufacturing our own products in our own facility that has earned the coveted NSF GMP (good manufacturing practice) Registered seal guarantees that our facility is GMP-compliant with oversight present at all points from start to finished product. Transparency In Bluebonnet s commitment to quality and transparency We work with premium suppliers growers and several thirdparty certification agencies to meet our high standards said Gary Barrows. In addition we seek raw materials that are non-GMO vegan and free of most allergens like gluten soy and milk and reflect that on our newly refreshed labels whenever they apply to better demonstrate that our products are natural while also providing full disclosure to the consumer. That s why when it comes to transparency Bluebonnet leads the pack by including 14 clean label symbols on our product labels--whenever applicable--to show that we are a truly natural line made with only the highest quality ingredients. facilities NSF Certified for Sport USDA Organic certified and non-GMO certified). Over the past 25 years we have implemented a whole host of clean label initiatives from kosher to vegan to organic to sustainable whole food ingredients. Since the company s products are manufactured in its own stateof-the-art facilities and tested in its own laboratories the Bluebonnet team has the ability to control quality from start to finish. Shoppers of today--especially the Millennials-- demand it. Consumers now have access to instant information via their smartphones and utilize this information to make intelligent choices. This is the reason we developed a clean brand from the beginning. Our 14 clean label symbols that are clearly placed on our front labels as appropriate provide consumers the confidence that when they purchase a bottle of Bluebonnet they know they are buying the best. Trisha Sugarek-MacDonald senior director of research and development national educator added that transparency in general implies openness communication and accountability. Transparency for Bluebonnet is operating in such a way that it is easy for others to see our actions and how we perform--are we being honest to our word With that said we knew internally that we had to have the highest quality standards which is why we partnered with highly revered organizations to obtain objective third-party certifications. So as this relates to our manufacturing process we employed GMPs long before they were required in our industry. In fact we were three steps ahead Sugarek-MacDonald said. This is because before the cGMPs were required for the dietary supplement industry Bluebonnet followed the cGMPs for pharma and food. We hired experts from the get-go to implement and improve internal manufacturing standards and procedures aligned with these other related product categories she explained. Once we knew what the proposed manufacturing standards were going to be for our industry all we had to do was just slightly adjust our standard operating procedures (SOPs) so that they were now in line with the new GMPs set for dietary supplements. Then we selected NSF International the leading global public health and safety company to confirm our internal practices. In fact after a long thorough review we received their esteemed certification-- NSF GMP Registered--in 2015. The USDA Organic certification was a relatively easy endeavor compared to the other certifications due to all that the company had learned from NSF during the GMP certification process according to Sugarek-MacDonald. So it took about five months from start to finish (i.e. application to audit) to be awarded USDA Organic Handlers by the Texas Department of Agriculture. The process to review incoming or new raw materials has always been strict she added. We look for materials that are kosher-certified free of most allergens and naturally sustainably sourced as just part of our rigorous ingredient selection process. We identify nutrients that are pure and wholesome and utilize them in our products said Bob Barrows. Since consumers today have access to information at their fingertips they are more skeptical of advertising and of blanket claims like natural or high-quality because they can more easily check the veracity of those claims. They don t trust a brand just to say it is natural. They want those brands to demonstrate they are really natural. This is the reason we invested so much of our resources over the past 25 years to support our mission in providing truly natural high quality supplements. Natural means everything to Bluebonnet added Gary Barrows. Our philosophy from the very beginning has always been to provide products as close to nature as possible. Bluebonnet works closely with many of our growers and suppliers to make sure they employ sustainable harvesting and fair trade practices as well as strict organic non-GMO farming methods. We search for scientifically supported farm-to-table ingredients that have been minimally--if at all--processed. Today you see many brands attempt to go back to nature. What makes Bluebonnet unique is that nature has always been part of our DNA. It s where we started 25 years ago and we have never veered away from it. In fact we ve used the advancement of science and technology to just preserve what Mother Nature has already given us. Hessler pointed out that when it comes to health the public has never been more conscious of prevention over treatment. Bluebonnet takes no shortcuts and spares no expenses in locating and using the Earth s best raw New Product Development t Bluebonnet we have always believed that some of the best natural solutions to health concerns have come from whole food nutrients like herbs botanicals super fruits and vegetables said Trisha Sugarek-MacDonald. That s why we have concentrated a lot of our new product development efforts on those fronts paying particular attention to their dietary benefits and how they are sourced (USDA Organic non-GMO sustainably harvested free of most allergens etc.). So our focus on expanding our whole food and whole foodbased offerings has certainly been a distinguishing effort. We have expanded over the years our line of predominantly kosher-certified non-GMO standardized herbal extracts to over 30 unique products. We have launched numerous USDA Organic nonGMO kosher-certified whole food and whole food-based supplements under the Super Earth and Super Earth Rainforest Animalz lines (e.g. Organic Greens Organic Wheatgrass Organic Veggie Protein etc.). We have also recently introduced a whole series of sustainably harvested Super Fruit extracts (Cranberry Vegetarian SOD Cantaloupe Cherry Grape Seed Garcinia Cambogia and Pomegranate)--most are kosher certified. Dedication to the Natural Channel The Barrows family decided at the outset that loyalty to natural food retailers would be a cornerstone of the Bluebonnet growth plan. We have been committed to natural food stores since day one and 25 years later we have never waivered from this loyalty said Bob Barrows. Natural food stores provide the key ingredient to the success of their store and our brand education. Without this key element it would be almost impossible for a brand to get traction he stressed. Our stores offer great value by educating the consumer and providing them with high- quality products which facilitate repeat sales. You cannot get this type of personal service from the mass market or internet. Bluebonnet s 25-year history of being true and loyal to the natural products channel is unquestioned and because of our loyalty we have developed meaningful relationships and friendships with most of our retailers who entrust us to be the brand that stands with them and only them Bob Barrows continued. When we started on our journey over 25 years ago we had a single mission to produce an exclusive science-based supplement brand for natural food stores made up of the highest quality nutritional supplements as close to nature as humanly possible added Gary Barrows. It is because of our undivided attention to quality and full transparency the Bluebonnet brand resonated with natural food retailers and their consumers. Our shared integrity passion and vision made us a perfect fit for each other from the get-go. Bluebonnet continues as a specialty brand with specialty products that need specialty service and nutritional knowledge to be sold effectively. That s why we feel natural food stores and Bluebonnet are a match made in nutritional heaven he said adding that retailers have knowledgeable staff who can help guide consumers to natural products that address their individual nutritional requirements or health concerns. We have a unique partnership with natural food stores that has allowed us both to flourish for 25 years because we share a common goal. That goal is to make a whole new generation of healthconscious consumers healthier by helping them make informed choices when selecting natural solutions to their nutritional health needs. 25 years later... that has not changed Our industry is based on interpersonal relationships and trust agreed Hessler. The family already knew the industry and were well aware that it is in the stores where consumers get the most information and education pertaining to natural products. We have not forgotten why we stand here today in our 25th year. We stand here today because of our natural food retail partners. We are still loyal and true to our only partners--natural food stores. Innovation Over Fad Bluebonnet s innovation has many highlights over the years championed by a product development team that has more than 100 years of collective experience in nutritional science according to Hessler. We have never been a company that felt the need to develop products that meet a market fad. Bluebonnet has always developed serious thoughtful quality-oriented products with rock solid science behind them that deliver results. We have been first to market with many products such as Grape Seed Extract Nucleotide Complex and Vegetarian SOD. We pioneered the U.S. introduction of ubiquinol when no one had heard of it much less sold the product. Our Extreme Edge performance line immediately stood out over the crowded sports nutrition category since it was the first NSF Certified for Sport line available exclusively to natural food stores. Tested for more than 200 banned substances and other contaminants by numerous sporting authorities like NFL and MLB Extreme Edge has set a new bar that most will never come close to meeting in the sports nutrition category. Bob Barrows noted that Bluebonnet s product development team has more than 100 years of collective experience in nutritional science. We only offer products that are safe and have rock solid science behind them. Bluebonnet has never chased fads yet we have been first to market on several industry staples. Bluebonnet expects Kaneka to provide ingredients of the highest caliber backed by substantial research and manufactured with stringent quality standards Mansell said. In turn Kaneka knows that Bluebonnet provides consumers with an outstanding finished product accompanied by relevant current scientific information to help them make optimum supplement choices. Giving Back Another early initiative for Bluebonnet is its strong commitment toward being a green company. Gary Barrows explained We employ alternative energy like solar and wind as well as use environmentally friendly packaging components such as recyclable boxes paper and corn starch peanuts which dissolve quickly in landfills and soybased inks on printed materials. Plus we implement a corporate-wide recycling program for glass paper and plastics at both of our facilities. In addition Sugarek-MacDonald noted that Bluebonnet s charitable efforts are very near and dear to the staff s heart. One of the most gratifying efforts at Bluebonnet is to work with organizations whose missions correspond with our own she said. Donating to organizations like Mother Health International and Hope in Action that deliver nutritional supplements to children domestically and to pregnant women in underdeveloped nations and disaster areas is important. Since Bluebonnet gets so much from Earth s resources we feel it is our corporate responsibility to give back to our communities and the world at large. This is why Bluebonnet has been so devoted to worldwide nutrition. For this Hessler said the Bluebonnet sales force is very fortunate. We not only have the opportunity to work in an industry we love but we get to do so with a green company that cares as much about the impact they have on the environment as they do the products they make he said. That would be good enough for most but the best part is that we are able to provide these products working under the guidance of one of the most honest ethical and trusting families in the industry--the Barrows family. All is good As for the future of Bluebonnet according to its president the company plans to continue to support its founding mission of delivering truly natural supplements exclusively to the natural products marketplace. One ingredient you can expect to see a lot of demand for in the upcoming year is different forms of omegas according to Liu. He said these fatty acids are the real deal when it comes to the health of cells throughout the body noting that the intake of fatty acids supports the ideal environment for collagen production. He added that ingredients with antioxidant or antiinflammatory properties from natural sources are also very popular right now. Our latest product Ultimate Hair Skin and Nails addresses all of these concerns in one easy to take vegan capsule Liu said. People seem to understand that they can reap more benefits from skincare and supplements that are nutritionally complex whereas before they were hooked on one miracle ingredient at a time he continued. We have been singing the praises of nutritionally complex sea buckthorn oils for over 20 years we are glad that more and more people are beginning to see the light. Fisher of White Egret Personal Care explained that his company s focus has been on how minerals including magnesium and trace minerals benefit the skin. He stated his company has aggressively promoted and educated consumers about the benefits of pure magnesium oil. Hyaluronic acid which is not considered a new ingredient still has so much growth potential he noted. My company has found combining it with magnesium oil to be a powerful topical for skin hydration. Alpha lipoic acid is also a relatively new ingredient that is vitamin-like and has small enough molecules to work with the skin According to Resverage s Maru collagen is the main ingredient consumers are seeking today but not all collagen is created equal. He stated that the many advances in technology and science have resulted in more bioavailable forms as well as more clinical trial evidence on their performance. Advances have been made so that today Verisol Bioactive Collagen Peptides a high quality collagen is odorless tasteless and mixes easily in room-temperature foods and liquids Maru said. He also pointed out how popularity around ceramides continues to grow due to its ability to hydrate and moisturize the skin from within. Our ceramosides form of ceramides is gluten-free and has been studied in humans. Participants in the ceramoside research reported that the hydration benefits began in just 15 days thus providing beautifying support he added. Emerging Ingredient Research When considering what kind of ingredient research is of interest to manufacturers Landis said they are primarily looking for safety data on ingredients first and then for efficacy. He explained A lot of manufactures are starting to look at cosmetic ingredients that already have the science and the safety to back up the use. Antioxidant activity is of great interest to many manufacturers because of its relation to many different functions in health and beauty aide products and you can find many new studies on this subject appearing every day noted Liu. Antioxidant activity plays a role in everything from skin protection to collagen production so it is indeed a very important factor to understand. He further noted how ingredients made from fruits veggies and other plants tend to be loaded with antioxidant properties so it makes sense that natural skin health companies are interested in this kind of research. Horphag s Bornet described how manufacturers want to know that skin health research on ingredients is thorough and valid. As skin health is one of today s biggest markets manufacturers need to know and trust that the products they are selling live up to the claims they hold he said. This is why Horphag Research has continued to invest in research on Pycnogenol for common skincare conditions. Currently decades of research and real results has made this botanical extract sought after WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com reserveage for info about this advertiser Perfectionists Skincare in oral and topical beauty products worldwide. White Egret s Fisher explained that manufacturers are interested in unbiased research that gives manufacturers and consumers confidence to create and use natural products that will help improve their overall sense of wellbeing and do what they say they will do. He said clinically proven ingredients are important and give legitimacy to the industry. The research needs to show efficacy period added Resverage s Maru. It also has to be validated in double-blind placebo controlled human studies showing significant results in a short period of time--60 days or less. Industry Trends Emphasize Safety On the topic of the biggest industry trends Landis sees the way consumers have begun scrutinizing the labels on cosmetics in order to avoid harmful ingredients as the most influential of trends. He said websites like www.safecosmetics.org have made it much easier for consumers to get an instant safety summary on the ingredients in each formula. But the nice thing is that your local health food store has already prescreened each product for safety and harmful ingredients before it gets put on the shelf he said. And consumers appreciate this which could be the reason why skincare sales are ever increasing in our natural products channel. Concerning trends Seabuck Wonders Liu stated Our favorite mantra beauty from the inside out is crucial to the rise of nutricosmetics in today s natural skincare market. Consumers are looking for natural ingestible beauty products to complement their traditional skincare regimen. According to Liu convenience and ease of use are important qualities consumers seek in order to incorporate skincare products into their daily routines. He added that consumers now have a much more sophisticated understanding of the chemicals used in their personal care and are more discerning. 64 VITAMIN RETAILER Ingredients must be as natural as possible and the more certifications the better Liu said. Non-GMO (genetically modified organsim) Project verified cruelty-free organic and gluten-free certifications are becoming essential in the natural skincare world. Horphag s Bornet explained when it comes to trends millennials have learned from older generations that skin health starts from within and how important it is to take preventive steps to maintain healthy skin before reaching an advanced age. At Horphag Research we ve even seen an increase of women in their mid-20 s turning to skin health ingredients he explained. Because of this Pycnogenol a standardized natural extract from French maritime pine bark is widely used in topical and oral applications for various skincare indications. A unique combination of pharmacological functions of Pycnogenol provides an unmatched variety of benefits for skin health. According to Bornet Pycnogenol has been shown to increase hydration improve elasticity and selectively bind to collagen and elastin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition Pycnogenol reportedly stimulates hyaluronic acid and collagen production in human skin. A newly published review in Skin Pharmacology on Pycnogenol examines existing research and introduces new data to reveal exactly how the super antioxidant is effective for beauty and skincare Bornet said. White Egret s Fisher said he sees a trend toward natural products and that people who want to use natural products for skincare are avoiding surgeries and botox. They are drawn to new ingredients and products that are unique paraben free and affordable he explained. Maru s opinion on trends included his observation that a combination of oral delivery systems in conjunction with topical products is currently popular. There is also demand for vegetarian and vegan-friendly products. As an alternative to collagen supplements derived from animal sources Reservage s new plant-based support collagen builder features vegan-friendly nutrients he explained. Ingredients include a proprietary blend of amino acids vitamin C from organic amla gooseberry extract silica from bamboo and antioxidants from white tea. And to support skin hydration vegan phytoceramides are included. Retail Support The experts agreed that product education for retailers and by extension their customers is a key factor. Landis said one way that Hyalogic supports retailers is by providing in-store demonstrations. Customers love to touch feel and smell the products he said. Offering sample pouches with a couple of days supply are a great way to allow the customers to do a trial run. Manufacturers are also offering high-end looking displays to feature the products. Basically you don t have to go to a highend department store to find high-quality products they can be found right in your local health food store. Seabuck Wonders Liu agreed. We take an educational approach when it comes to training retailers and customers about our products he said. We support our retailers with in store demos ads and staff trainings. Manufacturers support retailer sales by creating products that are the highest quality and sell themselves because of their effectiveness said White Egret s Fisher. Having trust in a brand because of their efforts to produce products that are effective helps retailers to gain new customers and hold onto their current customers. Research-backed ingredients should be the focus for natural retailers according to Maru of Resverage. Retailers should focus on brands that offer science-backed beauty ingredients supported by human clinical research he said. They should also support brands that provide traceability as it relates to ingredient origins. They should also focus on products that have unique technology or are available in various delivery forms such as liquids powders and on-the-go chews. Retailer Perspective And what trends and customer preferences do retailers see regarding these products and ingredients According to WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com horphag for info about this advertiser Perfectionists Skincare Renee Thompson health and beauty aid buyer at Green Acres Market in Missouri consumers coming to her store are seeking natural ingredients that work. They want non-GMO organic clean products she said. We are seeing all age groups and nationalities coming into the store saying they are switching over to our brands. They are willing to forgo their comfort zone and at considerable cost toss out all the department and drug store brands they have used in the past. It s a lifestyle change for them. They are educating themselves and are reading the ingredient labels. Thompson noted that the most popular ingredients her customers ask for are hyaluronic acid alpha lipoic acid retinol and vitamin C serums. Thompson added that most consumers seek vegan gluten-free nonGMO skincare and cosmetics that perform as well or better than brands they have traditionally used. She said her customers want shampoo SLS (sodium laurul sulfate)-free deodorant aluminum-free toothpaste fluoride-free and they especially expect all their skincare to be paraben-free. She said customers biggest concern is efficacy. Everyone is tired of empty promises by advertisers Thompson explained. Having scientific studies to back up claims reassures them. Many natural skin care companies go to great lengths to test and have products certified. Customers are increasingly asking about where certain ingredients are sourced. They want to make certain the palm isn t from Indonesia for example. They care about the environment and want their sunscreen to be reef safe. Thompson explained that Green Acres Market employees care deeply about customers needs. We scrutinize every company brand and make sure we can stand behind every product on the shelf she said. By Courtney Anaya CPT tress is a part of life--unavoidable and sometimes needed. Yet too much of it can be debilitating which can often trigger a reaction--anxiety. National Public Radio s partners at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health found that one in every four Americans have combated a significant amount of stress over the past month. And according to the American Psychological Association the number of those who are suffering from stress and anxiety has dramatically increased by 44 percent over the past five years. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America indicated that there are various types of anxiety generalized anxiety disorder (affecting 6.8 million adults women twice as much as men) social anxiety disorder (15 million adults) and specific phobias that start in early childhood around age 7 (19 million adults). Those numbers are staggering and S numerous factors are to blame. Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at Wisconsin-based EuroPharma Inc. said It varies. It can be situational brought on by rushed deadlines uncomfortable family get-togethers or social fears. Or it can start slowly in childhood and become worse over time brought about by illness traumatic events or learned responses. To curb the hazardous effects of stress and anxiety natural approaches in regard to treatment should always be the first line of defense. Raina De Graaf a clinical nutritionist and wholesale representative for U.K.based Good Health Naturally advised The first thing we recommend as health advocates at Good Health Naturally is diet exercise and supplementation. They all work synergistically. Good Health Naturally started selling dietary supplements in the early 90s and experienced a surge in growth after the CEO Robert Redfern wrote The Miracle Enzyme is Serrapeptase. Often times when one is stressed or anxious heavy medication is prescribed and a comfort diet is adhered ultimately promoting a more difficult road to recovery. With that said De Graf noted that at Good Health Naturally We guide our customer to choose foods for a healthy brain such as fish hemp avocados coconut and nuts as well as healthy fruits and vegetables. Maintaining a balanced diet while combating stress and anxiety is vital not only for cognitive function but overall wellness-- creating equilibrium amongst stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Be Present As mentioned stress and anxiety can bring hampering effects to the body ranging from nausea to irrational behavior. When it comes to treatment fixing stress and anxiety has been a mainstream practice whereas the overall health of someone is a MARCH 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM lower priority. It s important for dietary supplements to not only target the power of the mind but the body as well. And Himalaya Herbal Healthcare helps to do just that. Omar Cruz clinical herbalist and director of education at Himalaya Herbal Healthcare said If we could put our mental hygiene at the same level of care we give the physical aspects we d be worlds better off. Because of that Himalaya Herbal Healthcare stresses several products that target both aspects. For starters the company was founded in India in 1930 marketing products for people s mental health and clarity since their earliest beginnings. And they ve been in North America for more than 20 years where their StressCare formula has been a top-seller. Another pro-mind product to take note of is MindCare. Cruz said of each product Both of these formulas have been subjected to double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials on people with various levels of anxiety and stress with remarkable results some even competing with more mainstream and conventional therapies. He continued on Our approach is less mono-symptom specific and more synergistic and farreaching. We want to reduce your stress level sure. And we do. But we also want to address things you may not be thinking of when you look at how stress affects the different organs and systems of the body. Moving forward with that information StressCare works to support crucial endocrine glands like the thyroid and the HPA-axis functioning as a natural communication passageway between adrenal glands and the brain. The supplement also helps the body return to a normal state of blood pressure where a sense of calmness can be felt. And for it to be all that efficient StressCare contains a synergistic blend of ashwagandha holy basil and turmeric. Among the bunch holy basil is a unique herb for combating stress because its mechanism of action is to reduce histamine responses in the blood thus decreasing skin redness and irritation. In India the herb is primarily used as an antibiotic for colds and respiratory infections but Cruz considers it a good full-body herb. He said It s a mild nervine so it will relax you a little bit right away and it s a very good insomnia herb. We use it somewhat like arjuna in terms of the heart. It s also important to keep in mind of holy basil that the soil in which the plant is grown in is the multi-vitamin of the plant meaning its environment has total control regarding the quality. While StressCare targets the endocrine glands MindCare s focus is to assist in occasional absentmindedness and loss of concentration. To do that the supplement aims to support the HPA-axis and normal levels of stress and hormone production--ultimately reducing age-related memory problems. It s a Balancing Act Another body-boosting company to be aware of is Texas-based Natural Vitality which offers organically grown plant-based ingredients. The product Natural Calm emphasizes healthy magnesium levels and calcium intake. But what s magnesium and calcium s role in regard to stress and anxiety The answer they are fundamental nutrients on a cellular level. In a healthy stress-free person calcium excites nerves while magnesium produces a calming effect and calcium triggers muscle contractions where magnesium relaxes the muscle. Calcium is also needed for blood clotting yet magnesium keeps blood moving. Simply put it s all a balancing act. Natural Vitality sees it as an on-off switch when the body is stress ridden because the cells will experience a significant change having altered levels where a person is deficient in magnesium. Considered an orphan nutrient by the journal Nutrition Reviews 48 percent of the U.S. population consumes less than the required amount of magnesium from food. The recommended dietary allowance according to Oregon State University for this forgotten nutrient is VITAMIN RETAILER 69 Stressing the Issue ing mild anxiety. Their anxiety was measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) a validated method in measuring anxiety levels. After one week s worth of use of the echinacea extract STAI scores also decreased in three days. 400-420 mg a day for men and 310320 mg a day for women. And the nutrient provides more than muscle relaxation and blood flow--magnesium is needed for hormone and DNA production making and using proteins and for day-to-day tasks like sleeping. Natural Calm aids in restoring the orphan nutrient along with calcium intake. Called the anti-stress drink Natural Calm is made up of a proprietary formula that provides the body with rich absorbable water-soluble magnesium in an ionic form taking effect right away. In terms of mental health and depression--often seen in conjunction with anxiety--the ongoing research of BCM-95 curcumin has yielded some impressive results. -- Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs EuroPharma Inc. Higher doses of AnxioCalm were also studied targeting individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The study began with a screening phase followed by a sixweek double-blind treatment. Myers said of the study During treatment participants received either 40 mg of AnxioCalm twice daily or placebo tablets. Between visits one and six during the treatment period the number of severely anxious patients (HADS-A score larger than 11) decreased from 11 to zero in the echinacea group. So AnxioCalm significantly reduced anxiety in GAD patients with a full effect within about 21 days. In addition to AnxioCalm EuroPharma Inc. offers CuraMed 750 which contains BCM-95 Curcumin--a patented form of curcumin incorporating turmeric essential oils. Myers said of the compound In terms of mental health and depression--often seen in conjunction with anxiety--the ongoing research of BCM-95 curcumin has yielded some impressive results. One of the clinical studies had patients who experienced major depressive disorder (MDD) take a combination of fluoxetine (Prozac) and BCM-95 Curcumin over a sixweek period. The results a 77.8 percent response rate as measured by Proven Points Discussed earlier EuroPharma Inc. offers proprietary formulas that hit several health aspects of the body. But the one that has been especially studied for anxiety relief is AnxioCalm offering Echinacea angustifolia which is one type of echinacoside and not the full herb. Echinacoside is a natural phenol that s popular in traditional Chinese medicine containing nueroprotective and hepatoprotective properties. Regarding AnxioCalm Myers said After comparing echinacea species Echinacea angustifolia provided the levels of anxiety reducing compounds to be used as a source for these dramatically effective echinacosides. She also mentioned that the drug doesn t cause any drowsiness--a common side effect of prescription drugs for anxiety. To further prove the effectiveness of AnxioCalm one study was conducted where after one day participants experienced a decrease in stress and anxiety and a 25 percent reduction in just seven days. Another study published by the journal of Phytotherapy Research highlighting the efficacy of the echinacea extract for one week participants experienced strikingly reduced stress and anxiety in three days. This study involved 33 volunteers who were around the age of 40 all experienc70 VITAMIN RETAILER the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) indicating that both can be used together safely and effectively as complimentary therapies. There are two important keys to take away from the MDD study. First curcumin worked as well as fluoxetine regarding measurable changes in the HAMD-17 score. Second Myers said Curcumin can be an effective and safe treatment for patients with MDD without the side effects of suicidal thoughts libido loss dry mouth or other adverse effects. And if you are curious about BCM95 curcumin alone another study showed that 56 individuals with MDD were treated with the compound (500 mg twice daily for eight weeks) and it exhibited anti-depressant effects. Curcumin s mechanism of action is by influencing biomarkers associated with depression including plasma endothelin-1 and leptin. Plasma endothelin-1 is a protein that raises blood pressure constricts blood vessels and impacts neuronal activity leptin is a hunger hormone that affects metabolism and hunger-related behavior. Of particular interest in this research are those consumers now selecting gluten free as part of what has been defined as those with gastrointestinal distress. According to Mintel research up to 70 percent of consumers consuming gluten-free foods do so based on a concern with FODMAPS (fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols). So what is the FODMAP diet and is it credible diet for those with celiac disease gluten sensitivity and glutenfree adopters The FODMAP Diet in Relation to a Gluten-free Diet The FODMAP diet is an elimination diet which attempts to improve the symptoms associated in functional gastrointestinal disorders. The diet is based on the idea that fermentable carbohydrates worsen symptoms of those with digestive challenges. FODMAPs are carbohydrates (sugars) that are found in foods. According to Digestive Health Center Nutrition Services at Stanford University Medical Centre not all carbohydrates are considered FODMAPs. FODMAPs are found in these components of food Fructose (fruit honey high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) etc.) Lactose (dairy products) Fructans (wheat onion and garlic) Galactans (beans lentils and legumes including soy) Polyols (sweeteners containing sorbitol mannitol xylitol maltitol and stone fruits such as avocado apricots cherries nectarines peaches plums etc.) FODMAPs essentially pull water into the intestinal tract may not be digested or absorbed well and could be fermented upon by bacteria in the intestinal tract when eaten in excess. Common symptoms of diarrhea constipation gas bloating and or cramping may occur in those who could be sensitive to the effects of FODMAPs. A low FODMAP diet may help reduce symptoms which will limit foods high in fructose lactose fruc- tans galactans and polyols. The low FODMAP diet is often used in those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There appears to be evidence confirming that the FODMAP diet provides an effective approach to managing patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. More research is still needed to determine the FODMAP content of all foods and to determine the legitimacy of applying a low FODMAP diet to patients with irritable bowel disorder celiac disease and any other digestive challenges. Many gastroenterologist and dietitians are however now starting to apply this diet in clinical practice. The FODMAP diet may have once been a craze but now with an increasing body of evidence behind it has become a credible and valuable tool in the management of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Key for those manufacturing and marketing gluten-free food products to consumers with digestive health issues is recognizing the differences between what now drives consumers who have been diagnosed with celiac disease and require a gluten-free diet for life and those who have not. (Continued on page 88) MARCH 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 77 HEALTHANDNUTRITION Things Happen (Literally ) Enzymes Make By Cheryl Myers nzymes are proteins that make things happen. They are natural catalysts that accelerate activity and change without being changed themselves. They can do this over and over again. Enzymes are critical to all biological processes and are required for the body to function. Without enzymes there is no life. There are a wide variety of enzymes playing an active role in virtually every system in the body but there is not a single enzyme that does it all. Enzymes are very specific acting on what is called a substrate. Not all types of enzymes are located in all parts of the body. Areas become specialized according to need so that the enzymes in your mouth that start to break the bonds in starches to reduce them to sugars are different from the enzymes in your eyes designed to protect you from irritation and infection. Enzymes only work on a specific substrate. E In a delightful chemistry education website (chem4kids.com) the authors refer to enzymes as assembly line robots. There are many types of robots ones that lift the car chassis some attach doors others install a transmission. The authors explain that enzymes work in that manner. They grab some particle in the body do something to it release it when their action is complete and move on to the next particle to do the same thing all over again. And like assembly line robots their actions are not interchangeable. The tire robot cannot install a transmission and vice versa. Because these enzymes are so very specific if one part breaks they might not work. Some enzymes work alone and some need ongoing assistance. Enzyme helpers are called coenzymes--small organic molecules that can bind to an enzyme. You may be able to name one coenzyme--coenzyme Q10 which is a highly effective dietary supplement. However you may be surprised to learn that riboflavin thiamine and folic acid which you recognize as B vitamins are also coenzymes. Supplemental Enzymes Enzymes can be taken as supplements for a variety of health concerns. Some of the most clinically studied are the digestive enzymes made in the pancreas and released in a specific ratio as pancreatin. Pancreatin contains protease (digests proteins) amylase (digests carbohydrates) and lipase (digests fats). Enzymes from pancreatin are from an animal source usually porcine and are more similar to what occurs in the human body. There are also plant-based enzymes in which the protease lipase and amylase are extracted from a fungal source. Though they have the same names (protease lipase amylase) plantbased enzymes are vegetarian and WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 78 VITAMIN RETAILER resistant to changes in the pH (acidity) of the digestive tract. The down side is that they are less like the enzymes in the human body. Plant-based enzymes are good for digestion as they exert their activity longer. Enzymes have an optimal pH range and the digestive tract transitions from a very acidic stomach to a very alkaline small intestine. Since plantbased enzymes can function in a wider range of pH they can actively digest food during a broader time span. Using enzymes for digestion can help with leaky gut (which is associated with autoimmune diseases) and even autism and autism-spectrum disorders. There are a surprising number of conditions associated with poor digestion and those are just a few. Animal-based enzymes also improve digestion. However many practitioners believe their best application is for inflammation and malignancies. The theory is that since they are more like human enzymes they increase systemic enzymes that are used by the inflammation and immune systems of the body. White blood cells use enzymes as tools to destroy abnormal cells and the resolution of the inflammatory process includes the removal of debris and restoration of healthy circulation using enzymes. Enzymes whether plant or mammalbased should be taken with meals when used to improve digestion. Enzymes used for pain inflammation and cancer should be taken on an empty stomach so as not to exert their energy on digestion. Some enzymes are enteric coated meaning they do not dissolve until they reach the small intestine to better assure the enzymes are not used up by digestion but studies have shown that taking enzymes on an empty stomach (defined as 30 to 60 minutes before eating or two hours after eating) is highly effective for systemic benefits and enteric coating may not be necessary. three key digestive enzymes (protease lipase and amylase) to provide comprehensive digestion of all food types. Enzymes whether plant or mammal-based should be taken with meals when used to improve digestion. Enzymes used for pain inflammation and cancer should be taken on an empty stomach so as not to exert their energy on digestion. However digestive enzyme production in the body slowly declines with age and in certain conditions (cystic fibrosis chronic inflammation pancreatic cancer). Dietary intake may also be reduced as a result of current cooking and processing practices which can inactivate digestive enzymes. When there are insufficient digestive enzymes available in the body oversized undigested food particles can trigger the release of chemicals which in turn can cause symptoms of gas bloating belching constipation diarrhea nausea etc. Supplementing with digestive enzymes can overcome inadequate enzyme production by the body or intake from the diet. Digestive enzymes can be useful for healthy digestion and assimilation of nutrients and to reduce the symptoms associated with incomplete or less than optimal digestion such as gas bloating indigestion constipation and loose stools. associated with inflammation. It is believed that proteolytic enzymes when taken on an empty stomach can be absorbed by the intestine and re-secreted by the pancreas. Proteolytic enzymes appear to activate plasmin production from plasminogen and reduce kinin by inhibiting its conversion from kininogen. Proteolytic enzymes are also involved in the degradation of cytokines and cytokine receptors which are key triggers in the inflammatory process. Enzyme supplementation may also help break down circulating immune complexes further controlling chronic inflammation. Increasing the body s pool of systemic enzymes is useful for reducing inflammation and enhancing the body s repair mechanisms meaning quicker recovery. Clinical studies have shown that they reduce inflammatory pain and stiffness. Enzymes and Allergies Research suggests that allergies can be triggered by the presence of partially undigested proteins. When the intestines are exposed to undigested proteins histamine and other inflammatory compounds are released. Further supporting this connection some studies have shown that individuals with pancreatic insufficiency are more likely to suffer allergies. Because proteolytic enzymes can break down protein allergens and block the process that causes an allergic reaction supplementation has been suggested as a preventive and treatment option. Preliminary evidence has found that pancreatic enzyme supplementation can benefit individuals with a variety of food allergies as well as those with eczema. Enzymes and Autoimmune Diseases As mentioned previously when undigested protein molecules erroneously enter the bloodstream histamine and other inflammatory compounds are released. Inflamed intestines can allow these proteins to pass into the bloodstream where the body identifies them as foreign invaders (forming antibody antigen immune complexes). The immune system responds by mounting an unnecessary attack which can eventually develop into an autoimmune condition. As enzymes can help break down immune complexes formed between antibodies produced by the immune system and the compounds to which they VITAMIN RETAILER 79 Enzymes and Inflammation When injury occurs the body responds by initiating the inflammatory response. During the initial phase of inflammation blood flow to the injured area is increased leading to classic signs of redness and warmth. The increased circulation also causes the characteristic edema (swelling) and associated pain. While the inflammatory response is necessary to aid in the healing process chronic inflammation can actually retard the process of healing. Proteolytic enzyme supplementation has been clinically shown to reduce pain and stiffness Enzymes and Digestion When food is first ingested chemicals present in the saliva along with the physical process of chewing begin breaking down large food particles. As food enters the stomach hydrochloric acid and pepsin (a protein-digesting enzyme) are secreted to continue digesting the food. Next food travels to the small intestine where it will spend several hours being digested. The pancreas releases pancreatin which contains MARCH 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION are bound supplementation can address both the inflammatory and immune components of autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis lupus scleroderma and multiple sclerosis. may also prolong patient survival. Enzymes and Cancer Clinical research suggests that proteolytic enzymes can assist in the prevention and treatment of many forms of cancer including pancreas colon and lung. Research has demonstrated that enzyme supplementation improves cancer patient immune system function by breaking down abnormal proteins generated during the course of the disease. Studies have shown that supplementation can significantly improve quality of life and reduce disease symptoms (e.g. nausea vomiting changes in appetite stomach pain or stomach disorder tiredness depression memory or concentration disorder sleep disturbance dizziness irritability dyspnea at rest dyspnea during activity headache tumor pain cachexia skin disorders and infections). Some studies suggest that pancreatic enzyme supplementation Enzymes and Dosing Some of the clinically studied enzymes include bromelain (from pineapple) and papain (from papaya) from the plant world and pancreatic enzymes (protease amylase lipase) from the animal world unless sourced from a cultivated fungus. Enzyme strength is generally measured in units and this can be very confusing even if you have a degree in chemistry because each enzyme s activity might be measured by a different test and the units may not be equivalent. For example and this is not a real measurement 1 000 ABC units may actually have far less activity than 250 XYZ units. This is because the enzyme is tested by how much and long is needed to digest its particular substrate. To complicate matters further most enzymes are diluted. This dilution is often measured as 1X (highly diluted) to 10X (often undiluted) and everything in between. So how to choose One thing to look for is clinical studies associated with the product. Another is whether it is diluted or full strength (often mentioned on the label). A good enzyme product can make an enormous difference in ongoing health. VR References Enzyme tutorial. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE Allergy Relief from Quail Egg Powder By Prof. Gene Bruno MS MHS Huntington College of Health Sciences don t know if there s ever been an official survey but I m guessing that Gesundheit and God bless you are two of the most widely used terms worldwide--and with good reason. Allergies especially allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic asthma are extremely prevalent. Unfortunately conventional medical treatment for allergies comes with its own drawbacks and nutraceutical options have been limited and largely lacking in efficacy. However a promising new nutraceutical treatment for allergies has emerged from Europe and is based on--of all things--a quail egg powder called AllerGuard Express. This article will provide a comprehensive overview of the research on this new treatment--but first let s take a brief look at allergy statistics and current medical treatment. I million adults were diagnosed with hay fever in the past 12 months.2 Likewise one in 12 people (about 25 million or 8 percent of the U.S. population) has asthma--that s up from one in 14 people only a few years earlier.3 Comparatively one in 10 children have asthma.4 Allergic disease including asthma is the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S. in people of all ages. It is the third most common chronic disease in children under 18 years old.5 Current Medical Treatment Currently there are two types of medical treatment for allergies medication and immunotherapy. With regard to medications the American College of Allergy Asthma & Immunology says Decongestants and antihistamines are the most common allergy medications. They help to reduce a stuffy nose runny nose sneezing and itching. Other medications work by preventing the release of the chemicals that cause allergic reactions. Corticosteroids are effective Allergy Statistics Allergic rhinitis affects up to 30 percent of the population worldwide.1 In the United States about 7.5 percent or 17.6 MARCH 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM in treating inflammation in your nose. 6 The drawback is that allergy medications also have a significant number of side effects. For example WebMD indicates that some of the main side effects associated with antihistamines include dry mouth drowsiness dizziness nausea and vomiting restlessness or moodiness (in some children) trouble urinating or not being able to urinate blurred vision and confusion. According to the American College of Allergy Asthma & Immunology Immunotherapy involves giving gradually increasing doses of the substance or allergen to which the person is allergic. The incremental increases of the allergen cause the immune system to become less sensitive to the substance probably by causing production of a blocking antibody which reduces the symptoms of allergy when the substances is encountered in the future. Immunotherapy also reduces the inflammation that characterizes rhinitis and asthma. But there are also drawbacks VITAMIN RETAILER 83 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE to immunotherapy. This treatment is delivered via weekly injections (a negative for some people) or in oral form and is expensive. Medical insurance may pay for the injections but seldom pays for oral treatment. Furthermore it can take quite a long time to get relief from allergic symptoms with immunotherapy--typically a year or more. daily of 21 mg AllerGuard Express or a placebo. The study took place over a 22-month period. The results showed that AllerGuard Express was significantly better than placebo. In fact there was a 77.7 percent (p 0.001) reduction in the number of attacks at the end of treatment an improvement in respiratory function and a 58.6 percent reduction in the use of rescue medications by the AllerGuard Express group. Likewise a significant reduction in consumption of the rescue medication (p 0.0001) was also seen and these results took place at the peak of the pollen season and were already significant 45 days after the start of treatment. By the third month 80 percent of the treated patients treated no longer experienced any symptoms or unpleasant symptoms. An additional eight-month multicenter study11 examined the effect of AllerGuard Express (21 mg day) or placebo in 95 patients 48 of whom were adults and 47 of whom where children all with pollen-induced allergic rhinitis. As with the prior two studies results showed a statistically significant reduction in the intensity of allergic rhinitis in the AllerGuard Express group compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001) with an improvement in all the symptoms and a significant improvement in the condition of the nasal mucosa compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001). Once again there was a significant reduction in consumption of the rescue medication (p 0.0001) and once again these results were obtained at the peak of the pollen season. The doctor assessed the overall efficacy as good or very good in 68.7 percent of the patients treated with quail egg powder (p 0.05). Unlike in seasonal rhinitis the symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis will usually be present throughout the entire year. Consequently a 10-month multi-center study examined the effect of AllerGuard Express (21 mg day) or placebo in 124 adult patients with perennial allergic rhinitis. In this study both the doctor and the patient assessed the results. The doctor s patient s assessment showed that the effect of treatment was significantly greater with AllerGuard Express (63.4 percent 65.7 percent) compared to the placebo group (27.3 percent 25 percent) (p 0.003) and that efficacy was seen after 28 days of treatment in terms of both nasal congestion and conjunctivitis runny nose sneezing and nasal congestion. Altogether there were 739 allergic WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 The Story of Quail Eggs Now let s shift gears and take a look at allergy treatment using AllerGuard Express. It all started in the early 1970s when a French general practitioner noticed that farmers who raised quails presented fewer allergy symptoms than the general population in the same area. One quail farmer saw the gradual disappearance of existing asthma and constant allergy-related shortness of breath in his spouse and then that of his employees with the consumption of quail eggs. Another quail farmer who experimented successfully with this treatment on his own family and friends confirmed this observation. The physician then gave raw quail eggs to his allergy patients including both adults and children and observed a reduction in their symptoms.7 Subsequently investigations in several human clinical trials were carried out by a larger group of physicians under the direction of a highly respected French allergist physician Dr. G. Bruttmann. In these studies subjects suffering from outdoor and indoor allergens were given AllerGuard Express tablets or placebo. In addition each of the studies included a good size population and was double-blinded. The results of these studies indicated that consumption of AllerGuard Express led to relief of subjects symptoms with good tolerability of the administered product. Following is a review of those studies. AllerGuard Express In the Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis In a multi-center study 9 a group of 160 adults with pollen-induced allergic rhinitis were treated with one tablet daily of 21 mg AllerGuard Express or a placebo. The study took place over an eight-month period. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in the intensity of allergic rhinitis in the treatment group compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001) with an improvement in all the symptoms considered. Furthermore there was a significant improvement in the condition of the nasal mucosa compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001) and a significant reduction in consumption of the rescue medication (p 0.0001). Moreover these results were obtained at the peak of the pollen season. By the third month 70 percent of the treated patients no longer experienced any unpleasant symptoms. Another eightmonth multi-center study10 examined the effect of AllerGuard Express (21 mg day) or placebo in 180 adult patients with pollen-induced allergic rhinitis. As with the prior study results showed a statistically significant reduction in the intensity of allergic rhinitis in the quail egg group compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001) improvement in all the symptoms and a significant improvement in the condition of the nasal mucosa compared to the placebo group (p 0.0001). Allerguard Express In the Treatment of Dust Mite-induced Allergic Asthma in Children In a multi-center study 8 a group of 180 children with dust mite-induced allergic asthma were treated with one tablet 84 VITAMIN RETAILER patients in these five studies. In each study there was a significant improvement in allergy symptoms among those patients using AllerGuard Express over those using the placebo. Combining the results of all five studies 72 percent of quail egg users experienced significant relieve from allergy symptoms while only 20 percent of those in the placebo group experienced similar relief. It should be noted that in most of these studies patients started supplementation about one month prior to expected allergic attacks. Furthermore progressive results were seen over a period of months with continued use. Nevertheless significantly quicker relieve from allergy symptoms were seen with AllerGuard Express in the most recent study. Relief With AllerGuard Express in 15 Minutes Most recently a randomized doubleblind two-arm crossover placebo-controlled clinical trial12 was conducted in 43 adults. The participants were exposed to a mixture of the most prevalent outdoor and indoor allergens including grass and tree pollen dust mites as well as cat and dog dander. They then immediately took two tablets (42 mg of AllerGuard Express) or placebo both in the form of chewable tablets and were evaluated over a two-hour period. The results were that participants who AllerGuard Express were able to breathe significantly better through their nose (18 percent improvement p 0.05 vs. placebo) starting as soon as 15 minutes after allergen exposure and consumption of the tablets and also reported improvements in how they felt ranging from 25-44 percent for stuffy nose runny nose itchy nose watery eyes and itchy eyes during the same 15 minute time period. Over the entire two-hour post-challenge period participants who took the AllerGuard Express reported they felt significantly better with regard to stuffy nose runny nose itchy nose watery eyes and itchy eyes compared to how they felt after taking the placebo and all without any adverse events. against environmental triggers. In individuals with a sensitized immune system allergen-specific IgE antibodies are produced in response to environmental allergens.13-14 Worldwide sensitization (IgE antibodies) to allergies in the environment is present in up to 40 percent of the population.15 Certain outdoor and indoor antigens such as pollen mold animal dander and house dust mites contain protease enzymes. When they are inhaled and come into direct contact with the nasal cavity endothelium these protease enzymes can injure tissues and induce a transient IgE-mediated allergic inflammatory response.16 In-vitro testing has shown that protein fractions contained in the quail egg including ovomucoids and ovoinhibitors act as serine protease inhibitors.17-18 By inhibiting proteases AllerGuard Express bioactives help reduce the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Conclusion There is no single magic pharmaceutical or nutraceutical that will eliminate allergies. However given the strong and extensive human clinical research on quail egg powder (commercially known as AllerGuard Express) as well as its excellent safety profile the use of this nutraceutical offers promising results in helping to relieve allergic symptoms. M URRAY ND W hat if some of the largest clinical studies assessing the benefits (or risks) of selenium supplementation in cancer prevention have used the wrong form That looks to be the case as a new study from the University of Miami sheds light on the different effects of selenium-rich yeast versus another popular form selenomethionine. What the researchers have discovered is that there are proteins produced when making selenium-rich yeast that have anti-cancer properties beyond simply providing a source of selenium. The Role and Importance of Selenium The trace mineral selenium functions primarily as a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This valuable enzyme works with vitamin E and plays a pivotal role 86 VITAMIN RETAILER in preventing free radical damage to cell membranes. Not surprisingly low levels of selenium in the body have been linked to a higher risk for cancer cardiovascular disease inflammatory diseases and other conditions associated with increased free radical damage including premature aging and cataract formation. Low selenium levels are also associated with low immune function. Even in people with normal blood selenium levels selenium supplementation (200 mcg day) boosts immune function. In one double-blind study it resulted in a 118 percent increase in the ability of white blood cells to kill tumor cells and 82.3 percent increase in the activity of a type of white blood cell known as a natural killer cell. These white blood cells are given this name because of their powerful ability to kill cancer cells and microorganisms.1 The Health Benefits of High Selenium Yeast Go Beyond the Mineral Maintaining proper selenium levels appear to be important in protecting against many health conditions but some of the studies show some advantages to selenium-rich yeast that indicate there may be other compounds responsible for the observed effects in addition to selenium. For example in one double-blind placebo-controlled trial 69 healthy men were given selenium from a seleniumrich yeast known as SelenoExcell (200 or 285 g day) or selenomethionine (200 g day) for nine months. While blood selenium levels increased by 93 percent 54 percent and 86 percent in the selenomethionine and low- and high-dose SelenoExcell groups respectively only the men receiving the SelenoExcell demonWWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2016 strated a decrease in oxidative stress. Levels of standard markers of oxidative damage 8-OHdG and 8-isoPGF2 were decreased 34 percent and 28 percent respectively versus no change in the selenomethionine group.2 These results indicate there are additional factors in the high-selenium yeast contributing to the antioxidant effects. These additional factors could explain the difference in the results seen in prostate cancer prevention. while selenomethionine (200 mcg per day) was shown to increase the prostate selenium levels by 22 percent SelenoExcell produced a 34 percent increase at the 200 mcg day dosage and a 92 percent increase at the 400 mcg per day dosage. It is thought that increased selenium uptake in the prostate after supplementation with SelenoExcell as compared to selenomethionine may a key factor in the different results seen in the NPC and SELECT studies but there are other considerations as well. In addition to acting as an antioxidant selenium-rich yeast may also offer protection against cancer by immune system effects detoxification of antagonistic metals inactivation of nuclear transcription factors that stimulate cancer growth and a host of effects on DNA and cellular replication. Recently researchers at the University of Miami evaluated the A Closer Look at Selenium and Prostate Cancer The results from studies looking at selenium in prostate cancer prevention have brought conflicting results. These may be related to the form of selenium being used and the ability of selenium to be incorporated into prostate cells. In the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer (NPC) study supplementation with SelenoExcell a selenium-enriched yeast was associated with a 52 percent decrease in prostate cancer incidence.3 In contrast in the SELECT study selenomethionine failed to show any protective effects alone or when combined with synthetic vitamin E.4 The difference in results may be entirely related to the form of selenium being used (see above in regards to antioxidant activity). One factor used to explain differing results is the effect of selenium supplementation on the concentration of selenium within prostate tissue. Selenomethionine has been shown to have only a modest effect in increasing prostate tissue selenium levels.5 In contrast results from a double-blind study in men with prostate cancer show high-selenium yeast is significantly more effective in increasing selenium levels in prostate tissue.6 In the study 53 men were randomized to receive placebo 200 mcg of SelenoExcell or 400 mcg of SelenoExcell for four to six weeks prior to surgery to remove their prostate gland. Results showed a clear dose effect in increasing the selenium content in prostatic tissue and provided a greater degree of selenium incorporation in prostate tissue compared to published results with selenomethionine. Currently there are no therapies aimed at preventing the spread of cancer by specifically targeting the adhesion and migration of tumor cells into other areas of the body. Results from the detailed study showed that SGPs extracted from Selenium-enriched yeast possess the ability to reduce the adhesion of tumor cells to endothelial cells. In addition the researchers also showed that SGPs also blocked the migration of tumor cells into underlying tissue. Furthermore SGPs were shown to block the tumor promoting effects of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF- B). This action has profound effects as NF- B is a master regulator of pro-inflammatory reactions and gene expression. NF- B activation is a key factor in cancer cell growth and metastasis. By blocking NF- B the SGPs have an effect far beyond the action of simply providing a form of selenium. Comments If the science above is confusing let me try to restate what it is telling us. Basically it has long been assumed that selenium-rich yeast was beneficial because it provided a superior form of selenium. Once absorbed the selenium would be utilized as a valuable antioxidant as part of an antioxidant enzyme known as glutathione peroxidase. What the emerging science indicates is that the seleniumcontaining proteins that are produced in the process of making high-selenium yeast may turn out to be more important than the selenium itself. In other words these proteins may be the real protective factor. VR Aug 7(8) 796-804. 3 Duffield-Lillico AJ Dalkin BL Reid ME et al. Where did this allergy come from After her own child had an anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter historian Heather Fraser decided to get answers. In the book Fraser delves into the history of this allergy trying to understand why it largely develops in children and studying its relationship with social medical political and economic factors. Fraser compares the U.S. to 16 other geographical locations finding that in addition to the U.S. countries like Canada the U.K. Australia and Sweden there is a one in 50 chance that the child will develop a peanut allergy. Phone 44 (0) 1212 288 0464 Email info gingerparty connection we were approached by the ginger farmers cooperative to help develop the U.S. market for ginger. The business started modestly in 1984 as a part-time consultancy. We grew to love ginger as many people do. It s one of those addictive flavors that takes awhile to warm to. But once you do you re hooked. Today The Ginger People is the world s largest ginger brand with 80-plus ginger products and ingredients and sales in over 40 countries. On a personal level my broader interest in agriculture started much earlier. At 15 I got a job packing pears in Mendocino County California. I did it for three summer seasons and was paid piecework. Before that my parents took my siblings and me on family outings each season to pick our own fruits and vegetables. My mother wanted her children to appreciate the value of nutritious food. Not just how it tastes but where it comes from who grows it and how it nourishes you. This grounding triggered my affection for farming and my desire to feed people responsibly grown nutritionally rich and deliciously flavorful food. How does the family keep up with the company s growth The Ginger People a privately held and funded business owned by the Leeson family. Bruce and I work full-time in the company as well as our eldest son Evan who runs the ingredient division in Australia New Zealand and Europe. The Ginger People has over 30 staff and operations in Marina CA Sydney Australia and Vienna Austria. We keep up with growth by investing in quality people staying focused on ginger and being selective about what business opportunities we pursue. Where is your ginger grown and where does the company travel for business Our primary ginger source is Fiji. It s a growing ginger region that offers a pristine environment and expanding organic operations. We also source from China the home of ginger Peru and Indonesia. The company staff travels to all of these locations several times a year to audit our partnering farms and factories. We also travel to most of our 40-plus export markets. This year a group of us headed to N rnberg Germany for BioFach the world s largest organic trade show. What is the Arjuna Share Project How was it started and what are the goals of the project Arjuna Share is a revenue-share program we created in 2015 to fund community and agricultural improvements for the farmers who grow our organic ginger on Mount Arjuna East Java. The revenue is raised through the sale of our new Arjuna Ginger Bar. For each Arjuna Ginger Bar we sell worldwide we are able to return .5 percent percent to the farmers. Arjuna Share also guarantees a minimum price of 15 percent over commercial value in line with Fair Trade guidelines. What s in store for 2016 for The Ginger People In 2016 our focus is on building our team and strengthening our resources. We re improving our traceability systems tightening our relationships with our farm and factory partners and using current research to find practical applications for improving our collective health. We re also introducing more products into the dietary supplement space expanding our Arjuna brand and unveiling our newly rebranded Bottoms Up Ginger Beer.
