It s a massive undertaking for a small company that is primarily concerned with putting out motorsports and motorcycle magazines. but for the better part of four months most of our focus is on making this weekend happen. this is our second year producing the combined midMarch custom car hot rod motorsports show at the International Centre. as we write this the floorplan is full the Johnsonville stage schedule is looking incredible and the anticipation is building We ll get to what s new for this year s show in a moment but before that we d like to thank Gary Challice for another incredible job filling the halls with amazing vehicles It s an honour and a pleasure to work Gary. those same words apply to Mike Galipeau who goes over and above with everything he does... and he does everything. turning to the new things at the 2016 Motorama show you ll hopefully have noticed that the show is now being presented by Mothers. thank you to Cliff Waller of Mothers for his friendship and support thanks too to brad Martin of Johnsonville Canada for returning to sponsor the Johnsonville stage and for being such a big part of the show. We d like to recognize Karbelt for putting together the amazing Kars Expo feature again and stepping up by bringing in the 2015 ridler award-winning Impostor which was designed and built by Chip Foose. and speaking of amazing vehicles Canadian Motor speedway has brought the last car that Jeff Gordon drove to victory lane (last fall at Martinsville). this year s show will be very busy with awards presentations including the short track and Drag racing Night of Champions on the saturday night. thank you to stoneridge specialty Insurance for being the main sponsor of the event as well as to andrew stirk Greg Calnan spencer Lewis and Wally Nesbitt for all of their work getting everything together for this incredible spectacle. We d also like to encourage you to visit hall 4 and the spring Fever feature. the one big gap in our first show last year was the lack of a tuner modified room which had been such a key part of the spring show for years. We ve rectified things this year thanks to the help and hard work of Kristine Danton who is managing the vehicles and entertainment. thank you Kristine and all of the vehicle owners and exhibitors who have helped us to bring back this important component of the show Finally we d like to thank our celebrity guests for coming to Motorama. THE CarS arE THE STarS he initial concept behind the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo presented by Mothers was to provide a venue where automotive enthusiasts regardless of interests could gather under one roof to exhibit and appreciate motoring machinery connect and converse with like-minded hobbyists and explore examine and perhaps purchase the latest and greatest in related accessories and collectibles. If the 2015 debut of Motorama and the preliminary interest expressed in this year s edition are any indication the direction originally set out by show producers is working with the popularity of Motorama gaining momentum with each passing day. We had very favourable comments following last year s show and the fact that we have just shy of 400 vehicles registered for the 2016 Motorama show gives us a pretty good indication that we re on the right path commented Gary Challice Motorama s automotive Coordinator. It s the variety of cars and trucks that want to come and be a part of Motorama that makes it work. We have everything from race cars and street tuners to hot rods rat rods antiques custom and muscle cars on the floor this year. Motorama showcases something for every interest. Looking to make a statement immediately upon entering the Motorama show visitors will be greeted by a breathtaking collection of 28 first-time-shown creations fronted by a pair of cars that were rated by street rodder magazine to be in the top ten examples of the year. 6 I MotoraMashoW.CoM a WHO S WHO Of Car buiLdErS and raCErS arE aT THE MOTOraMa CuSTOM Car & MOTOrSpOrTS ExpO t Lining up on the front row and welcoming visitors to the show will be a killer Model a sedan as well as a traditional custom car both of these vehicles setting the tone for the remainder of the exhibits. people wandering through the show will find a 1932 Ford that was street rodder s Car of the year and then they may find themselves coming face-to-face with Jeff Lutz s brand new Mad Max an Nhra-legal Camaro pro Mod that also happens to be licensed for the street continued Challice. Lutz will be just one of the notable builders present at the show his celebrity status matched by such Motorama guests as steve Darnell from television s Welderup and Vegas rat rods Jimmy shine from Car Warriors plus car collector and legendary musician billy Gibbons from ZZ top. these celebrities will be participating in the Custom Car and hot rod panel discussion on the Johnsonville stage as well as meeting with their fans in scheduled autograph sessions. however as Challice states the backbone of any car show is the car clubs. We ve got 14 different car clubs taking part in this year s Motorama show. there are a pair of Mustang clubs a Corvette club a Camaro club the highway 11 Cruisers plus the Lead Kings and this year s Featured Club the roadmates. Each club brings something a little different to the show. as the Featured Club the road Mates who are celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2016 will have a dozen member-built cars on display. Due to the longevity of the club and the diversity of their membership the interests of each participant vary greatly so the show examples will range from a 1923 model to a 1966 Gto. Last year s Featured Club the Lead Kings will try something original this year as they will perform an actual roof chop and rebuild of a 1950 pontiac. aside from the club-specific displays Challice has reserved space for two coordinated exhibits. We ve set up a street display with nine custom trucks lined up on one side of the road with a half-dozen street rods parked along the other side. the second exhibit that I m really excited about is the Cars on Film area. this display highlights vehicles that have made a lasting impact in movies and television. show visitors will be able to see cars that were a part of their pasts and have the chance to walk around and possibly even sit in these memorable recreations. Cars on display will include clones of the american Graffiti Coupe steve McQueen s bullitt Mustang the Munster Coach the 1966 batmobile and the scooby-Doo van. a back to the Future DeLorean and David hasselhoff s Knight rider trans am KItt will complete the collection. Concluded Challice I m very very excited about this Motorama show. there s going to be a lot of variety and a lot of stuff that we ve never seen before. this is Canada s biggest indoor car show and this is where the car builders and owners want to be seen. It s going to be spectacular. MOTORAMAI spoNsors Paolo Pedicelli (Above)InadditiontosigningonasMotorama spresentingsponsor Motherswillprovidegiftpackagestoawardwinnersandcarexhibitors. The 1983 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion retired having won 85 races on NASCAR s top tour during his illustrious career including three Daytona 500 victories and was named one of NASCAR s 50 greatest drivers. Allison a charter member of NASCAR s fabled Alabama Gang which included his brother Donnie Allison son Davey Allison Red Farmer and Neil Bonnett will be at Toronto s International Centre on Sunday March 13 at the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo Presented by Mothers. During his appearance Allison will meet with racing fans sign autographs pose for pictures and share stories about his decades in racing including his many trips north of the border to race in Canada. I have a lot of great memories of racing in Canada and I m looking forward to coming to the Toronto Motorama show to meet with racing fans see some old friends sign autographs and have a good time talking about stock car racing said Allison. Bobby Allison was welcomed into the 44 I MOTORAMAShOW.COM 1983 champion and winner of 85 races cominG to motorama on march 13 W NASCAR hall of Fame in 2011 as part of the hall s second class of inductees alongside David Pearson Lee Petty Ned Jarrett and Bud Moore. The fact that Allison was among the first seven racers to be enshrined in the hall of Fame speaks volumes about his place in the sport. Allison began his NASCAR career at the 1961 Daytona 500 and earned his first of 85 wins in 1966 at the Oxford Plains Speedway. his 1983 title saw the seven-time NASCAR Most Popular Driver award-winner beat threetime NASCAR champion Darrell Waltrip 1988 champion Bill Elliott seven-time champion Richard Petty two-time champion Terry Labonte and fellow Alabama Gang member Neil Bonnett. Allison raced in Canada at Cayuga Speedway several times over the years including 1983 alongside fellow NASCAR hall of Fame member Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR hall of Fame nominee Buddy Baker. In a testament to his longevity and prowess behind the wheel of a stock car Allison s last victory the 1988 Daytona 500 came almost 22 years after his first victory and 27 years after his NASCAR debut. The race was memorable for a number of reasons including a huge crash featuring racing legends Richard Petty and AJ Foyt and Bobby s son Donnie finishing runner-up to his father who set a record that still stands as the oldest driver to win the Daytona 500 (50 years 2 months and 11 days). In addition to his incredible on-track accomplishments Bobby Allison is credited with helping bring NASCAR into the mainstream of American sports. The brawl following the conclusion of the 1979 Daytona 500 featuring Bobby Cale yarborough and Donnie Allison was broadcast live across the country and put the sport on the map. With much of the East Coast immobilized by ice and snow the 1979 Daytona 500 gained an immeasurable number of viewers on Sunday Feb. 18. The first Daytona 500 carried live on network television the event offered thrilling side-by-side racing against the backdrop of sparkling Florida sunshine. As laps wound down millions watched as Cale yarborough and Donnie Allison duelled to the finish. In their last-lap dash to a win yarborough and Allison wrecked each other on the backstretch entering turn 3. Seven-time series champion Richard Petty swept past them to claim the win his 43rd career victory. Then it happened. Furious with each other yarborough and Allison climbed from their damaged cars and exchanged words. They were soon joined by Donnie s brother Bobby and the argument escalated into a three-man tussle on the grass infield treating the day s spectators and television audience to one of the sporting world s best-known fights. Grimy and sweating from several hours of racing Allison and yarborough unwittingly boosted national awareness for the sport launching it on the first of what would be many popularity surges. To this day Bobby Allison is still extremely popular with racing fans that have supported him and his family through their triumphs and tragedies over the decades. We re extremely excited that Bobby Allison is appearing at Motorama said Motorama s Greg MacPherson. he s a living legend. And in addition to everything he accomplished in NASCAR he also has a great history of racing in Canada. As part of his appearance on Sunday March 13 we re planning to have Mr. Allison on stage with gentlemen like former Cayuga Speedway owner Bob Slack and some others who raced against him in Canada to talk about their glory days.
