It s the beginning of a series of never-ending torrential rain storms hay fever and the start of major league baseball. But one of the best days in April is the first. April 1 st known to many as April Fools Day is the one day of the year when it s okay to punk your friends family and co-workers. And what better way to do that than in a short story where no one actually gets hurt This issue is dedicated to pranksters worldwide. We invited writers to submit short stories essays and poetry about their favorite pranks and in the process we learned a lot about manipulative computers (The Editor) overachieving milkmen (The Milkman Only Rings Once) and even a little something about sex education (How I Didn t Get the Clap When I Was Four). Yet the sentence I d typed only moments before was gone. A new one had materialized during the time I had been distracted. I rubbed my face with both hands. Gazing up again at the clock I saw only a minute or so had passed since my last pause. I returned to the keyboard and retyped what I had done earlier. Roger Schumacher s story The Editor is a spooky story about a computer that gives self-editing a whole new meaning. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Getting into the car and turning on the radio she thought about how she could alter her promotion of the Emory-Monroe area. She d skip the crime-free community part and concentrate on an hour from Boston an hour from the White Mountains an hour from the seacoast. Better to leave out the Emory-Monroe Co-operative except maybe for a brief mention that it was the top-ranked school in the state and just won a national blue ribbon award. The couple had preschoolers so she d concentrate on Monroe Elementary. Six grades plus kindergarten. Great teachers great class size great new building. Monroe was a town that supported its schools. She wouldn t mention high taxes. They d find out soon enough. Sharon s story The New Alice and Jerry and Jip is a tragic tale of a family who started out with storybook promise but ends in heartbreak. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. How I Didn t Get the Clap When I Was Four By Hugo Glin Mom Dad how did I get syphilis I was in sixth grade and the question had tormented me all day. If God could pull off the virgin birth maybe Satan could infect me without sex. Dad choked on a pork chop momentarily looked at my mother and then mentally tried to plug my younger siblings ears. Mom simply looked at me and asked in a calm voice What did you say hon She leaned forward and turned an ear towards me. How did I get syphilis Hugo Glin s story How I Didn t Get the Clap When I Was Four is a sweet story of childhood innocence intertwined with sex sort of. An Analysis of Tolstoy s My Confession By Harun Ker ek Tolstoy in a search of meaning of life (meaning of life is not a good phrase My Confession can be said to be about the reasons for living the answers of creation life and matter) runs into a conflict that he finds to be a failure of logic. The Milkman Only Rings Once By Cameron Vanderwerf Little Jenny were fascinated by the milkman and she would wait every Saturday morning to catch a glimpse of him in his crisp white suit and cap carrying a box of glass milk bottles from his truck to the doorstep. Some days she would throw acorns at his hat from her spot in the tree. Sometimes she would wait in the bushes and jump out at him with a gleeful scream meant to instill terror. Or maybe she would throw open the door before he could ring the doorbell snatch a bottle of milk and dance around him and chant as if she meant to summon a rain of milk from the sky itself. Her variety of unusual greetings was endless and he always took it in his typical good humor. In each issue of Pilcrow & Dagger one story is chosen to be read as a podcast. In this issue we chose The Milkman Only Rings Once by Cameron Vanderwerf. This is a story of a mysterious milkman who has his own agenda for the world. She is a newlywed and head-over-heels about her chef husband she made him move from New Jersey too. Kitchen Addiction is her first novel of the Mina Kitchen series. Lizz grew up in Glen Rock New Jersey and still hasn t recovered. She holds a BA in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University but has never learned to waitress. Talking Funny with Lizz P&D When did you first know you wanted to be a writer And when did you first sit down and start writing Lizz A loosey-goosey 5th grade creative writing class with Mr. B (Bill Blanchard). I wrote a lot of prose poems and the odd SHORT-short story. NEVER envisioned myself for retaining the attention of writing a novel much less reading one...until... Harriet the Spy (my 5th grade romance read lol). That said my mom said I made a booklet in kindergarten about our Siamese cat...I ve never seen it...I m doubtful lol. P&D You write cozy mysteries. What draws you to this particular genre Lizz Honestly it didn t. I don t write murder mysteries per se or true who-dun-its either... I m more of a Seinfeld meets Mel Brooks and at times I Love Lucy so I literally stumbled into the Cozy Mystery sector and it seems my kind of a hybrid fiction works here for folks who like to read like-styled tales. P&D Your stories are absolutely hysterical and a joy to read. Your descriptions and situations seem to flow seamlessly. How much work actually goes into crafting humor Lizz I wish I could say a lot. A lot of this is total recall. Okay maybe with a dash of hyperbole thrown in sometimes...by sometimes I mean a lot. P&D Mina seems to be one of those characters who life happens to rather than her being in control. How did Mina come to you Lizz I was laid off from a corporate job very political in nature...very glad it s in the rear view. But I will never forget the feeling that I had absolutely no control. After years in a position where I was being told I was doing well (and given raises to support that) the company fell to a buy-out new management came in and as usual decks were cleared. You know the story it happens everywhere. But this time it happened to me. I chose Mina s world to reflect the current economics of that time (and unfortunately current times) where often one feels as if they are not truly in control. It s a scary job market out there. So I thought a protagonist who s going through the same life-crap as everyone else would not necessarily be an inspiring person but at least a realistic character a kind of a there there you haven t gotten it wrong life s just tough for all of us now.
