My parents started my sister and I playing tennis at 4 years old. That was something that they chose Williams says. Of course I love the game or else I don t think I could ve played this long but design is something that I chose when I grew up. Williams love for design started when she attended The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where she earned her associate degree in fashion design in 2007. Now not only does she have her own fashion line but Williams also owns a commercial and residential interior design firm called V Starr Interiors. While tennis and interior design may sound like an odd career pairing Williams feels it s a perfect match. I wanted something that mirrored what I did something that s always changing she says. In tennis it s windy it s sunny the court is different you re playing bad that day--you have to figure it out. Design is always changing too. You re not designing the same room and doing cookie-cutter every single time. While Williams says her top design style is mid-century modern her favorite aspect of design is constantly evolving. At one point it s fabric at another point I m only into floor coverings or rugs and carpets she says. I m very obsessive with things so when I m into it I am into it all the way. Williams admits that she hasn t done much with the design of her own home in Jupiter. I ve been living in my house since 1999 so it s more Mediterranean-style she says. I ve been working on moving for a few years and it never happens--mostly because I don t have time to work on my own stuff But I m going to do it this year. Williams has collaborated on big commercial projects all over South Florida and she recently teamed up with Terra Group to work on Botaniko Weston the community s first masterplanned single-family home development in more than a decade. Williams and her team are designing the interiors of the one- and twostory homes which range in size from five to seven bedrooms. More than 80 percent of the development s homes will boast lakefront views and each will feature its own expansive private pool. The development s first homes are slated to be finished in 2017. It s an amazing community and I m so excited about it because it s warm but still contemporary I love seeing more contemporary design coming to South Florida Williams says. When she nails a look for a client her reaction is pretty reminiscent of an epic win on the court. When they see the final product and want to move in there themselves that sort of thing is really satisfying she says. I get excited I literally pump my fist The tennis star s passion and drive is what drew Terra Group s president David Martin to hand-pick her firm for the luxury project. The firm s history of excellence reflects the championship drive and innate passion for interior design that Venus exudes Martin says. Her on-the-court style and grace is reflected in how the company operates and in the visionary work that they produce for their clients. As for her tennis career Williams short-term goal is to keep her ranking high and make it to the Summer Olympics in Rio. However the 6-foot-1 superstar is practical enough to see further down the road. When you re an athlete it doesn t last forever. You retire very young and you can t have idle hands Williams says matter-of-factly. I wanted to know who I was off the court and I ve been able to find it. Adam knows the business. There s the accountability and reliability factor. Adam who joined up with his mom 18 years ago says the comfort level makes them more productive. And watching his mom in action taught him the business. I was going to learn the business the real way he says. I had her teach me every step of the way. I don t think I could ve done it without my mom s help. We found a niche with time Wendy says adding that Adam s wife Jennifer also works for the firm. When family time arrives they try not to talk real estate Wendy says. It doesn t always work but we try. hiring an assistant he came to me and said I want to be that assistant. According to Wendy Adam coming on board helped the business in many ways. The business was doing well but it was getting more technical she says. Adam coming in seemed like a great opportunity. In addition to her son s computer tech skills she found they complement each other as sales partners. It s the man-woman younger-older thing she says. You ve got to be two people to do this. Wendy cites a huge advantage to working with family I ve got a wedding to attend in St. Augustine The Levy Group When her son Adam Levy joined her Pinecrest real estate firm he brought with him a unique skill to the profession says Wendy Levy-Jackson who started the business 35 years ago. After he attended the University of South Florida Adam built homes. It separates him from most Realtors Wendy says. I can explain what s behind the walls to the buyer Adam adds. So what made her son decide to transition from building homes to selling them He had been working on a job site in Boca Raton that had been going downhill Wendy says. He knew I d been talking about Macken Realty Alan Macken and his sister Jodi have always been involved in the real estate company founded by their mother Lillian in 1988. She paved the way for us Alan says of his mother adding that he went more into the development side of the business while Jodi focused more on the brokerage side. My mom and my sister are better brokers than I ve ever been. We all found what we were good at and stuck with it. Alan tried other sales jobs before going into the family business whereas Jodi joined the company right out of school. Working together came naturally for the Mackens Beverly Raphael and daughters Lindsay Raphael and Robyn Raphael-Dynan of RCC Associates LMGFL.COM MAY 2016 53 FEATURE Alan says pointing out that his grandfather had run a successful family business in the past. All three say there are advantages to operating a business as a family. There s a lot of trust Lillian says of a firm with offices in Fort Lauderdale and Aventura. We operate with love and affection--and we collectively take care of the business. Alan says the day-to-day dynamics are different from nonfamily-run businesses in that there are no office politics. You don t have to deal with one partner having to get ahead of another he says. We listen to what each one of us has to say Jodi adds. I can t imagine my career taking any other course. I hope our future generations will work together and share our vision. Alan says it hasn t been hard for them to separate work and family time. We always set aside time for the family he says. When we go out for dinner with my nieces we will be family. We try to do our business in the office. It s healthier that way. And Lillian adds We never leave work angry at each other. Leslie and Bethany Johasky of Fernanda s International Market and Caf RCC Associates RCC Associates is very much a family affair. Company president and CEO Beverly Raphael has two daughters working for her to keep her successful Deerfield Beach construction firm running smoothly Lindsay Raphael is a Fort Lauderdale attorney who assists RCC with her legal expertise while her younger sister Robyn RaphaelDynan is director of operations. Beverly s late husband Richard began the business in Chicago in the early 1970s she assisted him from the very beginning. When her husband passed away in 1998 she was unsure what to do and considered selling it. Daniel and Mayi de la Vega of ONE Sotheby s My daughters thought it was very important that I get involved with the company Beverly says. I realized it would continue if I became involved. I wanted to do something to keep my husband s memory alive. Robyn wanted to get into the family business a year after working somewhere else. She worked her way up from the very bottom. She was willing to do anything Beverly says. Gradually Robyn became involved with many of RCC Associates major projects including the renovation of Sun Life Stadium That was her big project Beverly says. She learned the business hands-on after 12 years she became director of operations. When family members are involved in a business there are of course different dynamics involved and it s important for other staff members to see there are no special rules for family. Robyn was mentored at work through her fellow associates in each of her projects. She earned the respect of her co-workers the right way Beverly says. I was mentoring her as well I was looking at the big picture of what could be beyond that. 54 MAY 2016 LMGFL.COM Beverly says they try to draw the line between family life and business. They try not to talk business outside of the office. This is family time she says. We re not going to do that. One Sotheby s When Mayi de la Vega founded ONE Sotheby s in December 2008 her son Daniel immediately came on board. Prior to joining his mother s business he was working for a construction and development company and was also selling real estate. Today he is the president as well as a shareholder of ONE Sotheby s which is active throughout Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. Mayi says what makes their working dynamic so special is the absolute unconditional trust they have in one another. He always has my back she says. It s a great feeling to know he has exceptional leadership skills. I trust him for who he is not so much as my son. I think what we have is very unique. Mayi says she s always been Daniel s mentor at work. I did mentor him and I still mentor him she says. One of the nice things is that he allows me to mentor him. He doesn t challenge me. He appreciates it. The only downside is that it gets into our personal life Mayi continues. We always wind up talking about work. But it also gives us an opportunity to share lots of things together. We have learned to put down boundaries especially on the weekends. their involvement in the community. It all says a lot for the product and the quality. Both women say they ve found the perfect combination of skill and experience to work together. Bethany is the foodie and Leslie who worked for Neiman Marcus for 22 years in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton offers many years of retail experience to the mix. Back when she was a student at Florida State University Bethany worked at a coffee shop as well as bars and restaurants. I never saw myself at a desk job she says adding that working with her mom has been a great learning experience and that her mother s retail acumen has helped the business improve. Bethany and I have always had a great relationship Leslie says. We make a good team--my sense of retail and her knowledge of food. Both mother and daughter say they have no problem separating their business and family life. We don t really separate it Leslie says. We enjoy the time we spend together. When we re here we work when not we just enjoy our family. Does her daughter work her too hard I like the work and I enjoy it Leslie says. When customers come in with food questions Bethany can give them the answers. the University of Florida and got a job working for Gallagher Insurance. About a year later he said Mom I m ready to come to Sapoznik Insurance. Michael on the other hand joined the family business just two months ago after living in Israel. At first the working dynamics were difficult. It was hard to separate the mother-son relationship from the CEO-employee relationship Rachel says. Isaac would think I was disappointed in him. He wanted me to be proud of him. To make sure Isaac received the full benefit of mentoring at work a third party was required Rachel says. I hired a business coach--a buffer initially. As the years went on a wonderful working relationship ensued. We have developed a great line of communication which has expanded the business exponentially Rachel says. It s OK if we don t always agree on something. You can always work together to find the right path. Sapoznik Insurance Rachel Sapoznik s children were the catalyst when she decided to form her own insurance agency 30 years ago. They re the reason I have the business she says. I was working for Hancock at the time and I got fired. They didn t have maternity leave and I couldn t keep up with their quotas. She s been a professional football cheerleader (San Francisco 49ers) a contestant on The Bachelor and a model for a Tiger Woods video game (the role of Val Sunshine Summers). As a television meteorologist she s lauded as one of the top females in the United States earning the American Meteorological Society (AMS) seal of approval for television weathercasting. You probably recognize her from six years as the morning meteorologist at WSVN Miami s Fox affiliate and the past four years at Miami s ABC affiliate Local 10. Every once in a while she ll fill in as weather anchor on Good Morning America or ABC s World News. She s also a co-owner of a thoroughbred horse racing stable with her husband David Radliff one of the stable s horses Arccos won his first race at the end of February. SOLOMON A Boca Pointe resident co-stars in a documentary by her daughter that explores the complexities of their relationship Mildred Abramowitz Kirschenbaum is on her way to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The 92-year-old is driving to pick up her daughter Gayle Kirschenbaum a New York filmmaker who is flying in to spend a few days with her mother in Boca Pointe. In some ways the mother-daughter relationship is typical in many ways it is not. Gayle says there is usually some disagreement that will bubble up when the two are together Mildred adds they ve already argued about her booking the cable company to fix a problem on the day of Gayle s arrival. Recently the two have been together more often than usual appearing at film festivals for interviews to promote Gayle s documentary Look at Us Now Mother The unflinchingly honest movie explores mother-daughter dynamics which includes Gayle s personal quest to discover why from a young age she felt that her mother disliked her. Did you ever feel like you were born into the wrong family Gayle asks in the introduction to the film. It s also about the journey on which the two embark in an effort for Gayle to find forgiveness. While the movie has Gayle s comedic style (the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker has been called the Nora Ephron of documentary filmmaking) there is a sadness that underscores the laughter. I was dealing with a mother who was relentlessly critical and abusive says Gayle who admits that she never expected to make such a deeply personal film. I don t know if I would ve made it if I knew how difficult it [was going to be] for me. The movie incorporates several decades of homevideo footage that her father Gerald left behind. Mildred and Gerald were expecting a boy they already had a name picked out (Gary). Gayle wonders if that was the curveball that got her off to a bad start with her mother. However in the film Mildred says with frank candor One of the reasons I might not have been nice to her as a child is that she was a b--chy little girl growing up. The idea for Look at Us Now Mother came out of a short movie that played at festivals and won Gayle a best director award in a competition against big feature films. While there are a number of new eateries on the horizon McCoy s Oceanfront inside the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa is already generating buzz. Executive chef Eric M. Kaszubinski joined McCoy s in February and has introduced a new menu that complements its beachside locale. Fresh seafood arrives daily and many ingredients are locally sourced. While there are intriguing dishes on the menu including a farro risotto with diver scallops gulf shrimp pancetta oyster mushrooms and Parmigiano-Reggiano Kaszubinski doesn t stray too far off course. The restaurant s namesake is Bill McCoy the legendary South Florida bootlegger during the Roaring 20s. The cocktail menu which plays up the Prohibitionera theme features several inventive concoctions The crisp cool Giggle Water is mixed with organic cucumber vodka and fresh lemonade while the Glad Rags has an artisanal appeal with its inclusion of St-Germain elderflower liqueur fresh grapefruit rosemary and vodka. I can t remember tasting a drink so fragrant. My dinner companion and I started with the warm breaded goat cheese panko-crusted to perfection. Garlic crostini was served on the side allowing us to scoop or spread the tart Portuguese cured goat cheese which oozed from the fried coating. We shared the Tuscan kale salad a mix of sweet sour and crunch. Kaszubinski rubs the kale leaves with lemon oil to remove some of the bitterness and then adds pine nuts raisins and Spanish Garrotxa cheese a pasteurized goat s milk cheese that adds subtle hints of rosemary and thyme. Florida pompano an entr e highlight arrived on a bed of fresh saut ed spinach arugula and Yukon potatoes. Each ingredient is layered and then the fish is placed on top. There s a reason for the presentation when eaten as prepared each ingredient comes together to bring out the tender sweet taste of the delicate fish. The aforementioned farro risotto enhanced with blood orange juice and vinegar seeps into melt-in-your mouth scallops giving them a tangy yet buttery taste. Salty pancetta finishes off this wildly satisfying dish. McCoy s sets the bar high for oceanfront resort fare-- and that s what should keep the buzz going as more dining competition hits the beach.
