This is our way of showing you how important and fun introducing children to the Great Outdoors can be. I have some personal experience with this subject matter. My son Chris was about 3 years old when his mom and I divorced and when she was accepted to medical school they moved about 300 miles away. This made it a challenge to pack up and drive to our family farm for any kind of outdoor activities. Of course at 3 he was too young to really enjoy fishing and hunting but as he got older it became obvious that he was turning into a Big City kid. While there are many advantages and distractions of living in a large city cultural educational recreational I was determined to stay an important part of his life and we maintained a very close relationship. We talked every few days and he visited me a couple of times each month. We shared a love of music and after a few years of lessons he excelled at playing guitar so much so that he received a 4-year scholarship to the University of Miami. This saved his mom and me a small fortune since this is a private university and he was from out of state Throughout his elementary middle school and high school years Chris was an active smart BUSY young man. In spite of this I encouraged him to join me on bird hunting trips to our family farm. At first this hunting was pretty boring to a kid who was used to being in front of a cheering audience or playing on his computer but he humored his old man and got up at the crack of dawn to go find some doves quail turkeys or ducks to hunt. After a while something strange occurred. He started asking me when we were going hunting. After hundreds of missed shots he started dropping birds with great passing shots and he was whooping it up. The adrenaline kicked in and he was hooked. Chris is now 37 years old he and I still make it a point to make the time to go hunting fishing or just hiking in the country. I have no doubt that he will get his kids involved in outdoor sports and so the tradition continues. In this special issue we will introduce you to the people programs and role models who are making outdoor sports fascinating to even the most urban and digitally-distracted kids I hope you share these articles with your kids grandkids or neighborhood kids and you get some good ideas for activities you can do together. Spending time in nature with kids is great for making memories. However it also has developmental benefits. This new population estimate reflects how conservation measures have propelled the growth of Florida bear populations from the 1970s level of 300 to 500 bears to their abundant status today. Extensive field surveys completed in 2015 and rigorous scientific analysis show strong growth in adult black bear populations in all three bear management units (BMUs) studied -- West Panhandle East Panhandle and South BMUs. Survey work in 2014 also showed significant increases in bear populations in the North and Central BMUs. These efforts provide accurate estimates for all public and private lands within the five recently surveyed BMUs and confirm that bears are one of Florida s greatest conservation success stories. MORE GOOD NEWS ABOUT DA BEARS FROM LOUISIANA In another black bear conservation success story The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced in March that the Louisiana black bear has officially recovered enough to be removed from the federal list of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. President Theodore Roosevelt would have really enjoyed why we are gathered here today said Secretary Sally Jewell who spoke about the recovery at the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. Working together across private and public lands with so many partners embodies the conservation ethic he stood for when he established the National Wildlife Refuge System as part of the solution to address troubling trends for the nation s wildlife. As I said last spring when the delisting proposal was announced the Louisiana black bear is another success story for the Endangered Species Act. Theodore Roosevelt earned his nickname--which he reportedly disliked--after hunting for the Louisiana subspecies of black bear in Mississippi. Members of his hunting party had trapped a young black bear and offered it for Roosevelt to shoot but the president famously refused finding it distasteful. The event was chronicled by cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman in The Washington Post and later a toymaker sought to take advantage of it by producing a line of stuffed toy bears. From there it quickly entered American culture and for better or for worse Roosevelt found himself saddled with the nickname for the rest of his stay in office and beyond. The population of the black bear declined dramatically. By 1992 experts estimated that the subspecies had dwindled to as little as 150 individuals. Federal and state wildlife agencies worked with Louisiana farmers and landowners to restore more than 485 000 acres of bottomland hardwood forests building much needed habitat for the bears. Today officials believe that as many as 720 Louisiana black bears now exist in the wild. The Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America s Diverse Fish & Wildlife Resources determined that utilizing a portion of revenues from energy and mineral development on federal lands and waters to fund state-based conservation could address conservation needs for thousands of species. An annual investment of 1.3 billion from these development revenues into the currently unfunded Wildlife Conservation Restoration Program would allow state fish and wildlife agencies to proactively manage these species reducing taxpayer costs and the regulatory red tape that comes when species are listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. The number of species petitioned for listing under the Act has increased by 1 000 percent in less than a decade. 16 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM QUICK ACTION IS CRITICAL A lot is at stake if we don t act soon. For every species that is thriving in our country hundreds of species are in decline. These recommendations offer a new funding approach that will help ensure all fish and wildlife are conserved for future generations said former Wyoming governor David Freudenthal co-chair of the Blue Ribbon Panel. We need to start down a new path where we invest proactively in conservation rather than reactively. The Blue Ribbon Panel was assembled in 2014 and met three times to produce recommendations and policy options on the most sustainable and equitable model to fund conservation of the full array of fish and wildlife species. The panel was co-chaired by Freudenthal and John L. Morris noted conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops. The group includes representatives from the outdoor recreation retail and manufacturing sector the energy and automotive industries private landowners educational institutions conservation organizations sportsmen s groups and state fish and wildlife agencies. During their meetings panelists agreed that an increased investment in fish and wildlife conservation makes fiscal sense and is needed to protect our natural heritage. Their recommendation would redirect and dedicate 1.3 billion each year from the over 10 billion in revenues from energy development (both renewable and traditional) and mineral development on federal lands and waters. Conservation means balancing the sustainability of fish and wildlife resources with the many needs of humans for clean air and water land food and fiber dependable energy economic development and recreation. It is our responsibility to lead the way so our state fish and wildlife agencies have the resources they need to conserve species and manage our natural resources - the future of our industry and the outdoor sports we love depend on this investment noted Morris. Redirecting revenues from energy and mineral development to statebased conservation is a simple logical solution and it is now up to our leaders in Congress to move this concept forward. WILDLIFE AGENCIES HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO KEEP PACE State fish and wildlife agencies have primary responsibility for managing species within their borders as well as conserving important habitats and providing outdoor recreation opportunities. Traditionally agencies have been funded by sportsmen through license fees and excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment and motorboat fuels - most agencies receive very limited funding through general taxpayer dollars. Agencies have not been able to keep pace with the growing challenge as habitat is lost and species decline and hunter and angler participation has declined. States have developed state wildlife action plans identifying 12 000 species in greatest need for conservation efforts. However limited funding requires prioritization of the species facing the highest risk of endangerment leaving thousands of other species and their habitats hanging in the balance. Proactive conservation saves tax payer dollars by addressing species needs early so that costly emergency room interventions are avoided. Preventing threatened and endangered species listings helps business by averting project delays and losses from forfeited opportunities due to land use regulations. In addition investing in conservation is vital to sustaining our natural infrastructure that supports numerous indispensable benefits such as pollination water purification erosion control flood control recreation food production and cultural amenities. Since 1937 taxes on hunting licenses or other items have been specifically earmarked by for conservation in the 50 states by this landmark legislation and the states are about to receive their annual refund. It was recently announced that this year s distribution of the revenues generated by the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Acts culminated in 1.1 billion to state wildlife agencies. Those funds will be going towards conservation outdoor recreation and job creation across the country. This distribution would be impossible without the popularity of hunting fishing shooting and other outdoor activities in America. These funds are paid for by excise taxes paid by hunters on firearms bows and ammunition and by anglers on tackle boat gear and small engine fuel. 20 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM THE BENEFITS OF A FEDERAL STATE PARTNERSHIP State wildlife agencies play an essential role in the conservation of America s wildlife while also generating billions of dollars for the nation s economy through increased hunting and fishing opportunities. It s fitting that those very sporting activities help sustain wildlife their habitats and the agencies that manage them said Service Director Dan Ashe. Our role in administering these funds reflects our longstanding partnership with the states across a broad spectrum of wildlife conservation issues. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to date the program has distributed about 18 billion since it was established in 1937. It was through these funds that state wildlife agencies were able to reintroduce or rebuild the populations of many native species some of which had been dwindling in the early 1900s. Game animals such as whitetail deer elk antelope and turkey would not have such abundant populations they do today without this funding. Likewise their habitats were also protected and restored. Approximately 62 percent of the funds from the program is used by state agencies to buy develop maintain or manage wildlife management areas. Since the program began more than four million acres have been bought and an addition 40 million acres managed in conjunction with private landowners. Hunters and anglers spend more than 10 billion every year on equipment and supplies alone and a portion of that goes back to conserving the wild places they love. That state s Governor Mike Pence ended an acrimonious 11-year debate in March when he signed into law Senate Bill 109 which officially legalized the hunting of captive deer. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 23 THE OUTPOST CAPTIVE DEER This practice also known also as high-fenced hunting or canned hunting by its critics has been the subject of much controversy and a long-running court case. Making it legal will likely not ameliorate the disagreement. According to an article in the Journal Gazette there are currently believed to be seven captive deer facilities in the state in Harrison Blackford Decatur Miami Whitley Marshall and Kosciusko counties. In 2005 there were more than a dozen in operation but the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ordered them to shut down due in part to concern over the spread of infectious diseases like chronic wasting disease. 24 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM The owners of the hunting preserves countered with a lawsuit arguing that the DNR had no authority over privately-owned wild animals. Last February a three-judge panel with the Indiana Court of Appeals ended the decade-long legal battle by siding with the high-fence hunting facilities and ruled that the DNR went beyond its authority. IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE FAIR CHASE ON FENCED-IN PROPERTY The decision was widely criticized by state conservationists as well as a significant number of hunters who say they are opposed to high-fenced hunting due to ethical reasons. Some hunters also worry that captive hunting could endanger the state s wild deer population which contributes roughly 200 million in economic impact each year. A number of animal rights groups also opposed captive hunting adding that some facilities are not large enough to give the animals enough space and that deer are not treated well. The owners of the captive deer facilities disagree. Supporters of the industry say that the animals have ample space and that the hunt is a genuine fair chase experience. The industry also benefits the high number of deer breeders in the state and opens up many new jobs. As for the big racks that traditional hunters often look down on supporters say there is nothing wrong with it at all. Instead of being managed by the DNR captive deer hunting is now set to be regulated by the state Board of Animal Health which is the same department that oversees livestock. Under the new law which is effective immediately new high-fence facilities must have a minimum of 100 acres with fences at least eight feet high. Current facilities will only have to meet an 80-acre requirement. There is currently no limit on how many animals can be kept within that space. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 25 NEW CLASS OF BASSMASTER HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STATE QUALIFIERS CHOSEN 2016 High school students from across the country have been named to the 2016 class of Bassmaster High School All-State anglers. Students are selected for the honor based on their competition success academics leadership and community service. To be considered for the Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team a student must have been nominated by a parent coach teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10-12 with a current-year grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible. 26 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM IT TAKES MORE THAN CATCHING FISH The All-State program not only measures an angler s fishing accomplishments but also his or her success in studies and extracurricular activities said Hank Weldon senior manager of the B.A.S.S. High School program. The students selected are very accomplished on and off the water. They are all very deserving of this award and we re proud to have them represent this year s All-State teams. B.A.S.S. received more than 220 nominations from across the nation. From these judges selected 64 student anglers from 36 states to make the All-State Fishing Teams. A second panel of judges will narrow the field to select the 12 members of the 2016 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities. The 12 finalists will compete in a one-day Bassmaster All-American High School Bass Tournament held during the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster BASSfest event a fan-favorite festival that will be held on Lake Texoma out of Durant Okla. Elite Series anglers will serve as teammates and coaches of the student anglers in the tournament. The high school standouts will be honored on the main BASSfest stage at the weigh-in. All will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine read monthly by 4.3 million people as well as on Bassmaster.com. SO YOU BETTER BE BETTER Maybe you ve noticed. These days there are very few kids who are interested in hunting fishing or anything else that involves being outdoors. Even during the month of December when kids of previous generations would impatiently wait for Christmas morning to bring a new rifle shotgun or fishing rod current-day kids would rather get a new smartphone or tablet and most couldn t care less about outdoor sports. This trend should and does scare the heck out of companies which manufacture guns ammo fishing rods and reels camping equipment knives and all of the other gear used for hunting and fishing. However it should also concern those of us who love these sports and care about their future. If there are no new hunters there will be nobody around who cares about preserving the wilderness. When nobody cares about the wilderness one of the most sacred environments nature will become real estate for one more tacky strip center or fast food joint. WHAT S HAPPENING HERE It s been said by more than a few outdoor sports enthusiasts kids have not changed. The world around them has changed and that world has little time for hunting and fishing. Unfortunately kids have found other things to do with their time playing computer games Facebook Twitter incessant texting and hanging around their rooms eating junk food and getting fat. As a parent grandparent or mentor to a child there is nothing more rewarding than sharing one s passion. Whether it involves music stamp collecting or sports most parents enjoy sharing activities with their kids and this is particularly true for those who love outdoor sports. So what s going on here It s simple. Those of us who love outdoor sports have failed to communicate the fun excitement and rewards of these activities to the next generation. We re often so busy mentally and physically exhausted with the day-to-day survival that when an opportunity to fish or hunt with our friends arises we jump at the chance and forget to bring along the little guys and gals whose lack of experience might be just another distraction from the sport. However if these sports are to continue we must make the time to show how cool they really are. It s not that hard to get a kid involved in the outdoor sports you love. It just takes some commitment both time and patience to make it happen. Here are some ways to get started. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 31 HAVE A PLAN Any sales campaign and make no mistake this is a very challenging sales effort which gets kids who are inundated with electronic shiny objects involves some planning. Take some lessons from the people who do this for a living teachers. If you happen to be a teacher or know one use your their expertise to encourage your kids to learn something new and exciting. For example if you re wanting to introduce fishing to a youngster it s a good idea to do some research online and a find interesting information on such topics of catch and release fishing practices the types of game fish that might be in the immediate area the markings of specific fish and simple strategies that are appropriate for catching different species. The minds of kids are sponges and if it s interesting they soak up new information fast - much faster than a tired old adult. All of this information can be used to improve the child s knowledge and excitement before any lines are wetted or shotguns loaded. Having a plan will also help the parent be prepared for most eventualities. For example what happens if the fishing party gets lucky and actually catches some fish Any child who land s her first fish will probably want to either have it for dinner or have it mounted no matter what size. Before the trip is a good time to talk about catch and release options or preparation of the fish for the table. A good alternative to keeping the fish is to bring along a camera and capture the event for posterity. It s also great fun to look at these photos when the child is older. 32 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM SHOW DON T TELL If you ve recently instructed your son or daughter to do something math homework clean a room or fix a sandwich for lunch you have first-hand experience of the advantages of showing rather than just telling. Often kids don t know WHAT to do or HOW to do it and they are embarrassed by this situation. So they do nothing. As Uncle Si would say Hey they re kids. The best approach to teaching children about hunting and fishing is to spend as much time as necessary maybe the entire trip showing them how to make a cast lead a dove or do any of the thousands of things that might be second-nature to you but are completely foreign to a kid who spends most days in front of a videogame. Some outdoor sports instructors even suggest that in the first few fishing or hunting trips that the parent or mentor leaves their equipment at home and only use the kid s guns or rods. This forces the teacher (that would be YOU) to concentrate on the task at hand showing not telling the child the correct techniques. https www.youtube.com watch v u-4GDpahL3s DON T GO OVERBOARD ON GEAR Every kid loves to play with gadgets and hunting and fishing are multi-billion dollar industries most of which is made up of very cool gadgets. The tendency on the part of experienced outdoor sportsmen is to buy the best equipment for their young charges. However this is not necessary. For example on the first or second fishing trip cane pole with a monofilament fishing line 8 or 10 hook BB-sized lead sinker and bobber will be fine. The sinker will get the bait down into the water and the bobber (float) will show the child when he is getting some nibbles. When it goes completely under the water it s party time Hunting sports are a little different but the same principle applies. A single-shot .22 caliber rifle or youth sized 20-gauge shotgun loaded with only one shell is plenty of firepower to learn about shooting for the first few times in the field. Some well-known shooting instructors suggest starting youngsters on BB guns before moving on to shotguns and rifles in order to teach gun mounting and swinging techniques. Parents sometime make the mistake of starting a child who s interested in hunting on a single-shot 410 shotgun. While there is some logic to this strategy the 410 is much lighter than a 12 or 20 gauge and easier for a kid to swing the problem lies in the smaller shot pattern of a 410 versus a youth-sized 20-guage gun. Trying to hit a dove or quail in flight with the smaller pattern of a 410 requires big-time marksman skills that most kids have not yet developed. Therefore the 20-guage might be a better choice of gun to learn on. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 33 Bow hunting has become very popular among both seasoned and younger hunters. The bow manufacturers have realized the potential for these youth and female hunters and have started making bows which are easier to use. Since this type of hunting requires more arm strength and specialized skills parents should consider professional instruction and youth-sized equipment before turning a young archer loose. For anyone wanting his child to learn about the excitement of bow hunting showing not telling a youngster how a bow is used on the practice range and later in the field would be time well-spent. Of course there s a good possibility that a person who enjoys hunting and fishing already has extra equipment that can be adjusted to a young angler. With regard to fishing simplifying the rod reel and tackle is advisable for the first few times on the water and if the kid enjoys fishing a moderately priced youth spin-casting outfit and their own personal tackle box will add to the fun of the sport. CHOOSE A LESS AGGRESSIVE QUARRY Most parents at least those in the right mind would never take a kid on a wild hog hunt for his or her first hunting experience. What might be a thrill for a seasoned hunter could permanently traumatize a kid and cause him to never want to get out in the field again. Largemouth bass marlin shark and other aggressive species are not the best fish to introduce the sport to a young angler. The best strategy for kids is to pursue fish that are easier to catch. Some good choices for first fishing trips include bluegills channel catfish crappie white bass and sunfish. As long as kids are catching fish they could really care less if it is considered a trophy fish or not. These kid-friendly fish also tend to hang out near the bank not requiring a long cast and do not require having a boat. The best waterways to introduce fishing are neighborhood fishing lakes in parks small creeks and stock tanks on farms. STAY POSITIVE AND PLAY IT FORWARD How many sports have been ruined for kids by type-A parents who are determined to make the child an expert The most important parts of introducing a kid to hunting and fishing are to keep cool and keep it simple. It s a mistake to paint all technology as evil. If the kid is enamored with high-tech gadgets there are now hundreds of smartphone apps that outdoor sportsmen can use to have a more productive trip. Just remind him that first-hand experience is always more fun than the virtual experience of a smartphone or tablet. Too much detail about the sport and too much attention to landing big one is the quickest way to make fishing and hunting another chore for the child. Be ready to skip rocks when the fishing gets slow or talk about the natural phenomenon such as the effect on the full-moon on fishing and hunting if the kid gets bored. With all of the advances in fishing equipment it s counterintuitive that some anglers would rather have a more hand-to-hand contact with their prey. Outpost Robert how did you come up with the Flip Reel Robert Tiller I get asked that question a lot and it s hard to answer because it s a mixture of remembering when I was a kid fishing and dreaming about fishing when I m at work. I think over the years I ve just started to point my design skills and our design team s skills to doing things we love doing [chuckles]. It suddenly becomes really compact all the mess is gone and you can just throw it back in your backpack stick it in your glovebox of your car. It s more about being spontaneous. When you wet the bell we ve actually got some secret sauce in the plastic which makes it really slippery so it casts well and the line runs off the bell well. You then swing the line with a sinker or weight and throw it out quite hard. You point the bell in the direction of where you are casting so that the line will simple run off. Then when you re ready to fish if it s really windy you can - while the line s out and you re fishing - you can fold the bell down to stop line blowing off the reel. I sometimes fish off the beach believe it or not and bury it so that it s just anchored in the sand. Put a stick obviously in the sand so I can find it again. There s lots of really cool ways of using it actually. Say you get a bite what s the process of bringing that line back in This goes a little bit back to your first question. When I was a kid growing up I learned how to fish using hand lines before I moved on to rods and bigger and bigger kits. The great thing about hand line fishing is you can actually feel every movement on the line. So when a fish is just coming to inspect the bait or get ready to take the bite you can sometimes even feel that. So it s a really good way to learn how to fish but it s surprisingly efficient. So with your ability to feel the bite so well as soon as it bites you just react the same way you would any other-- with any other kit fishing rod or otherwise. The secret is really just a little bit of practice and sensitivity to feeling the fish biting and when it bites you pull and set the hook. To wind it in though you just wind it in like you were winding in a rope or a string or... It s really nothing more complicated than that. That s why it s so cool. It kind of reminds me of the anglers who are good at crappie fishing. Woman are often better at it than men because you put your finger on the line and when they re nibbling around and you could feel it. It s very similar to how you re describing it. People that catch a lot of crappie are really good at the tactile part of it they feel a lot of nibbling going on. There s fish that we catch here in Australia which probably like bream for example which are very common in the estuaries and around the rivers and jetties and things. They will often just grab the bait and run which is good fun. You don t have to do much work at all. And there s other fish here which is a really beautiful eating fish called a Whiting-- King George Whiting. I remember catching those and when we catch those they approach the bait and you have to be actually really careful to catch them but when you do they re lots of fun too they re quite big fish. With the hand line it s actually really convenient really compact but it s also it lets you experience that kind of fishing. We re not saying the Flip Reel should replace your rod and reel by any stretch of the imagination. What we re really saying is Here s a great compact product that will complement your whole kit. It s a really good way to get started. But it s fun to fish while you ve got the rod out. I often have a hand line going just jiggling and playing and seeing what I can get. Is there any kind of fishing whether it be fresh water or salt water or any kind of species that responds better to this or is it all pretty much like any other rod and reel Yeah it s pretty much like any other rod. Even if you don t have one of these programs in your community think about using them as a model to start one Unless kids get involved in outdoor sports such as hunting fishing hiking and camping those traditions will go the way of the buggy whip and Dodo bird. Fortunately there are a few dedicated people who have left successful business careers to apply their skills to founding and managing organizations which foster family - friendly programs encouraging kids to get out and enjoy the outdoors. There is a program in Colorado which is nationally recognized for excellence called Colorado Youth Outdoors (CYO) and it s led by Bob Hewson. The Outpost spoke with Bob about this innovative program in a recent telephone interview. FINANCIAL SUCCESS WAS NOT ENOUGH In addition to being the executive director Bob Hewson was one of the co-founders of the organization. He explains how Colorado Youth Outdoors came to be. 46 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM I grew up in Northern Colorado in a family of 4 kids Bob said. My father was a school teacher so we were probably classified in today s terms as a poor family but we never knew that. My brothers and sisters were gifted by our folks to explore the public and private lands around this part of the country which was a really fun thing to do. When I grew up and started a career I had a fabulous opportunity to go to work for a great company. I traveled around the world and it allowed me to have things I never dreamed I would have. However at the end of the day I realized that my kids were missing out on some of the critical things that I had enjoyed growing up and I didn t want that to happen to them. So I left my company in 2003 after we had established Colorado Youth Outdoors in 2001. I asked my brother who is an educator to draft a curriculum and we started working on getting parents who were involved with their career to get more time with their kids using traditional outdoor recreation as that vehicle. WHY THE GREAT OUTDOORS IS SUCH A GREAT SCHOOL It is so logical to use nature to add value to the family Bob said. It s important to note that this program is all about kids WITH their parents. CYO is all about relationships and that s what we focus on. What better place to that than right here in Mother Nature You have to give it a little prompting he noted. And we use the shooting sports fishing and survival as those themes. We were founded on a program that was introduced to the area schools and we were very successful having about 15 schools involved using our curriculum. We quickly realized that this was not an efficient method. We were fortunate enough to find a facility on more than 200 acres of land in Northern Colorado and in 2007 we began what we call a facilities-based programming. It s the same program that we were offering through the schools but now those kids and parents come to us at a centralized facility. We have a beautiful campus with 12 fishing ponds a 17-station course for archery 5 trap houses for shooting and a significant amount of open land to promote the wildlife. It puts us in the mindset where we need to be in order to have great times with these curricula. We also have a program in the Southeast near Colorado Springs that is an evolution of our plans. This program is still schoolbased. We will probably continue to use this model coming into a community and using the facilities that are available (and schools are great) while looking for the opportunity to bring a facility to that region. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 47 GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN TOO Boys have always been interested in shooting and fishing but the fastest growing group for outdoor sports is young women. Bob explains how the two genders react to the CYO program. Common senses suggests that it s probably the males who are more interested in these outdoor sports especially when we re talking about bringing parents with them he said. It has been so interesting to see how many mothers and daughters daughters with their dads and boys with their moms participating in this curriculum. It is not gender-biased he noted. Typically outdoor sports participation has been driven by the males in the family but we are so happy to see the so-called soccer moms getting involved in this type of recreation Some have been involved a little but this allows them to enhance their relationship. HOW TO GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT OUTDOOR SPORTS Typically kids will follow their parents Bob said. If parents are too involved with anything beyond the work schedule and the demands of life the kids will find things to do on their own and that s unfortunate. However if we give great things for parents to do with the kids and we introduce them to the outdoors specifically these curricula kids will follow suit. Much of the interest starts with the kids he said. They may be been introduced to Colorado Youth Outdoors from a school program. Maybe they were out shooting BB guns that day and they came home telling mom and dad guess what I got to do today We have to realize that kids today have some much available to them so much cool stuff and it s not that the videogames are inherently bad. We just think that the time spent on these activities might be better spent checking out other cool things. It s our job when we do have their attention to make it as exciting as the next competition such as the electronic games and mobile phones that allow them to connect to their friends. These can be great things but in moderation. If the kid says hey I m willing to learn something new it s our job to get as exciting or more as rewarding or more than all the other things competing for their time. 48 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM WHAT ABOUT SINGLE PARENTS Today s society has many single parents mostly single moms Bob noted. What happens when a single mom has multiple children but wants to see one of her children involved in our program What this means is that the child is willing the mother is willing but the mother just cannot attend. We have a great list of mentors folks who have come to us maybe their son or daughter has moved out of the house and they want continue to be a part of the program. The single parent who wants to have their child in the program but does not have the bandwidth gets to meet that mentor before that relationship starts. THE MAVERICK PUTS THE FUN BACK IN FUNDRAISING The CYO organization has developed an annual fund-raising event called The Maverick. Bob explains this unique experience. Every great non-profit needs to have a great or many great fund-raising opportunities and ours is The Maverick. This will be our 15th year for this event. The Maverick is a sporting clays tournament that is totally unique to our region. Most everyone knows what sporting clays is but if you don t know it s basically golf with a shotgun he chuckled. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 49 Our event is unique in that we build a course every year in a non-traditional setting meaning it s not a course that you would normally shoot. We build the course for a weekend and then we tear it down. We are moving to a new location this year more in the plains area of Colorado and the course will be one of the world s largest. It will be 2 miles long Each team gets their own golf cart meals are served during the course and the beverage carts come around although we re not serving the adult beverages until after the shoot. The innovative program got its start as a 10-school pilot project thanks to the BoatU.S. Foundation which is providing initial grant funding to F3 to help schools offset the cost of participation. After the pilot phase the program will be refined to a final format and then made available to all interested junior high schools. We have been working on the pieces of this program for a long time but we now have it ready to go said F3 Executive Director Mark Gintert. We built a program that is aligned to National Standards for Physical Education and condensed it into a four week module for the classroom. Our intent is to teach the fundamentals of fishing as well as aquatic education and environment stewardship to our target group of 6th 7th and 8th graders and then create a system of multiple fishing opportunities for them. We realize that at the end of the class not every student is going to want to continue on with fishing but for those who do we have a format that leads them into a school fishing club where they can get those additional opportunities that they may otherwise miss out on. The program works well whether fishing from the bank or boats and for all venues and species of fish. We just want kids to get outside and to the water s edge where they can learn a host of lessons that can t be experienced in a gym Gintert explained. Gintert further explained that key partners have helped F3 bring the school fishing program to fruition such as the BoatU.S. Foundation Zebco and the Bass Federation. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation operates in all 50 states coordinating teams at the elementary school through high school level as well as with collegiate organizations. The 2016 Industry Intelligence Report on the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation reports on the findings of a recent research project that examined the demographics shooting habits and spending habits of those youths enrolled in the program in 2015. Indicative of the program s success and its importance to the continued viability of the shooting industry as a whole some of the most important findings from the report include From 2013 to 2015 the number of youth athletes participating in SASP grew 49 percent growth in SCTP since the program s inception in 2001 is an impressive 1 682 percent with current participant numbers standing at nearly 12 500. 93 percent of SCTP parents surveyed said that the program had had a positive influence on their children 52 percent said they saw their child s grades improve after participating SSSF programs. Estimates derived from the survey indicate that those participating in SCTP will spend more than 8 million dollars in 2016 97 percent have made a purchase relevant to the shooting sports since becoming involved in SCTP. An innovative physical education program is spawning a new generation of outdoor stewards. Should outdoor sports be a part of the public and private schools physical education program The members of the Dallas Ecological Foundation (DEF) have no doubts and they are beginning to convince others especially businesses and organizations such as Cabela s and the Dallas Safari Club. The executive director of the foundation Scot McClure explains. The Dallas Ecological Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) based in Dallas. Our mission is primarily outdoor education and wildlife conservation he said. About 15 years ago we found a niche where we could impact young people in public school settings by teaching them hunter education archery fishing the shooting sports and other outdoor activities such as camping - directly to those students that are not involved in those disciplines. Recently the DEF got some great news from well-known sporting goods retailer Cabela s. Chairman of the organization Abe Nayfa explained how this came about. We started this effort about five months ago with a grant request he said. And quite frankly I was a little worried about whether or not we get an audience with the Cabela s but they called us and Scot I and Dr. Don Center had a conference call with them. We just basically laid out what we do what our passions are. My passions have been to get kids and women involved in the outdoors and so D.E.F. was a natural place for me to come. Cabela s just really thought that this worked out well with their program. Scot and I had the good fortune to meet Thomas Milner who s the CEO of Cabela s back in the spring in Dallas and I think he was impressed with Scot and what our program was doing. I think that probably had a lot to do with it but we were very pleased that they were able to give us the funding. They gave us wonderful gift noted McClure. The total was 470 000. The grant is designed to be used over three year period to double our education program. We are currently involved in 250 public and private schools. They want 500 schools in the next three years. So that funding will allow us to provide some incentives funds to each school which would like to be involved. At the same time it allows us to hire some contract help because we have expanded beyond Texas borders we re in ten different states. So with the Cabela s funds we will be able to hopefully go through their stores and promote to their local communities get more schools involved and with 500 schools we average about 100 students per school so that would give us 50 000 students. 56 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 57 The Outpost How did you two men get involved in teaching outdoors sports as a part of a physical education curriculum Abe Nayfa I just happened along. Scot is the person who developed this program. I ve been involved with Dallas Safari Club and the Dallas Ecological Foundation for nine years now. Its mission is to teach outdoor education to kids. What we re finding through the programs is that I m seeing the kids on a regular basis on some of the functions that we put on and their face lights up every time. But now I m also seeing the parents and how involved they re getting. In this day in time of all the electronics that we have it s nice to get kids and parents back together. We just recently had another event and I had a parent tell me that his daughter cannot wait to get up and go to school every day because of outdoor adventures. That just makes me happy. I know that we have information now that shows that kids are coming to school more often. Truancy is down in the schools where we have this program so we re pretty excited about it. Childhood obesity particularly in this country has been called epidemic. It can lead to type two diabetes heart disease psychological difficulties for kids and other problems. Some experts feel that a rigorous physical education in school combined with better nutrition could turn this around. Is DEF physically challenging enough to move that needle down on childhood obesity Scot McClure The physical education curriculum and what they call the standards that you have to teach requires some type of cardiovascular teaching and some type of long term life-skill that they can enjoy for a lifetime. Unfortunately in your secondary schools middle schools and high schools if they re in P.E. they are not engaged in athletics. Therefore they re not involved in any kind of cardiovascular activity. So what we did with our curriculum with hunting fishing archery and other disciplines is that we ve created a physical component to every lesson challenging the students to get in shape to enjoy these activities over his or her lifetime. So we are directly tackling the issue of childhood obesity by encouraging students to go into new activities that they ve never been exposed to learn how to go out and hike and hunt go out and learn how to go out and fish and enjoy the outdoors. That s something you can do forever. And that s how we re challenging all the students to get in shape. 58 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM Anybody who has ever tried to walk for about three or four hours down a corn stubble while hunting pheasants or carried out a whitetail deer knows there s a cardiovascular aspect to hunting that anybody could experience. Abe Nayfa You can introduce kids to hunting with a one day event all the time but until they learned how to really appreciate what you re doing and become enthusiastic about it they re not going to pursue that beyond one day. So with our curriculum teaching them a 180 days of activities that they can enjoy for a lifetime they re more likely to want to go and do those activities. So that s where our niche is different than most people s outdoor education program. It is in a public school and we are teaching this for an entire year so the students will want to come to class because it is new and exciting and we have research to show that these students are buying hunter education certification they re buying hunting license and they re going out and partaking in these activities. Scot McClure We include everything that we can to challenge the students to get involved - from camping hiking and survival skills to orienteering using a GPS to CPR first aid. We want them to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors. We want to create good outdoor steward so that they can appreciate it love it. And all throughout the curriculum we teach the North American model for wildlife conservation. By introducing the concept of wildlife is for us to enjoy and use and sustain it is not taught in public schools. I m a Biology teacher I taught public school for 20 years. Wildlife conservation is not taught. So by introducing that aspect we are creating a new steward a new conservationist for the future. And from those students that are not involved in those disciplines we are creating a new voter. They re going to understand the value of wildlife the value of fishing the value of buying a license and the value of buying a hunter education card. Abe if a parent wants this program their school what can they do Abe Nayfa They can contact Scot or me and then we will try to do our best if they ll contact the school will try to work with that school. We picked up almost 50 schools since the first of July. It s really taken off and as he told you our goal is to have 500 schools in the next three years and quite frankly I ve challenged my board that we have a thousand schools in the next five years. I think that s a pretty big challenge and I don t know if we can get to it. We want to get the kids off the couch - get them active. For example one of the activities that Scot didn t mention that these kids really enjoy is Dutch oven cooking. And that s something that adults would enjoy and they re kids are teaching them. We have a safety event that is sponsored by Dallas Safari Club twice a year that we provide the kids for. We re all volunteers to that. To see the faces of the parents as they go through the day go from I didn t really want to be here today to Wow I can t believe I ve had such a good time. We think that s going to put better citizens out there because these kids are going to understand that there s something out there besides a smart phone or a computer or a tablet or whatever. This young man is the real deal and his life is a testament to the benefits of young people participating in outdoor activities. After having his spinal cord severed in a freak hunting accident when he was a teenager Josh had to undergo 13 different surgeries and have a permanent tracheal tube placed in his throat. He was told that he would never walk or talk again. However the doctors and nurses had never met a kid like Josh. Rather than lying in bed wondering why fate had chosen to ruin his life young Mr. Carney did something completely against medical protocol. To the horror of the nurse on duty he pulled the tracheal tube out of his throat and started talking again. Not only did he start talking but this trauma had some unintended consequences. It allowed him to make turkey owl and other wild critter sounds that were indistinguishable from the real animals. More on this later. Josh also decided that this accident was not going to define him and his story has inspired young kids and grizzled old folks. He is in high-demand as a motivational speaker and continues his love of hunting. There absolutely no chance that something as insignificant as being confined to a wheelchair would stop this young man from pursuing his dream. He recently stopped by the Outpost to talk about his life the set-backs and the triumphs what it means to be an honest-to-goodness role model for kids AND adults and how he can make those amazing turkey calls using just his mouth. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 61 62 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM THE ACCIDENT When the accident that paralyzed Josh occurred and he was lying on the ground critically wounded what was going through this young man s head I was 13 years old when it happened and it was a huge life-changing experience he said. Being at that age when everything is going for you you wonder well what happens next. When I asked that question that s when my journey began. In the intensive care unit of the hospital with the tracheal tube in his throat Josh made a decision that would change his life. It was funny really he said. The doctor came in and said because of the injury I would never be able to walk again. This was devastating news. Then he came back and told me that since I had had the tracheal tube in my throat for so long I would not be able to talk again. He said we re going to have to put another tube in your throat so you can talk. That news upset me. I thought this is not going to happen. So I pulled the tube out of my throat Needless to say this shocked the nurse and she s running around saying don t talk you were not supposed to pull the tube out I thought well you re not going to tell me what I can and can t do he said chuckling. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT With the tube out of his throat Josh discovered a gift he hadn t had before. It was weird at the time he said. When I pulled it out I had to go through rehab to get my vocal cord strength back and noticed that removing the tube had altered my voice. Being 13 you re in that puberty stage and everything is changing for you. When I pulled out the tube it left me with a raspy pitch to my voice and this allows me to make different animal sounds. I only discovered this 3 years ago and it s been amazing ever since. Josh can accurately imitate more than 10 species of turkeys in many different settings without the use of a standard turkey call. This begs the question how does he do it I do give credit to my injury for sure he said. But I learned some of these sounds. One day I was at a hunting show and a guy was trying to sell me a turkey call. It was a really annoying highpitched call and he was pitching me on buying this call. I tried to be polite and said that I didn t want to buy it. So he asked me what type of call I use and I said well I use my mouth. I was just talking a little smack but he called me out on my bluff. He said let s hear it. I started trying to imitate the call and the owner of the company turned around and said is that our call The salesman said no it s that kid. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 63 64 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 65 66 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM They ran me away from the booth so I went to another booth where they were blowing turkey calls. I listened for a while and said let me see if I can mock you. He would blow and call and I would imitate it. This went on for a while and he said so what other calls can you do I said I don t know. I just learned how to do this about 10 minutes ago. For the next few minutes of this interview Joshua Carney was asked to offer his go-to calls to bring in gobblers and they were uncannily accurate. I love being a part of organizations that promote getting youth into the outdoors he said. I hunt with kids year round and one of my favorite hunts is one called Hunt for the Cure. It takes kids with cancer out on a deer hunt. It s phenomenal Even with my accident and my story I get to learn so much more from the strength of these kids. I learn spiritual and emotional lessons from them because they know their lives are not as extended as ours. So they live it to the fullest and they still have a smile on their face. I go on hunts with groups like the NWTF Whitetails Unlimited Buckmasters and other who really focus on getting the kids outdoors and sharing our traditions. Nowadays so many kids constantly on videogames and other things they shouldn t be into. If we could pass that tradition along letting them know that there is something more fun than being at home locked up in a room playing a videogame all day. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR JOSH CARNEY I m the kind of guy who lives life to the fullest he said. I don t take no for an answer. Every day is a new day and every day brings a new challenge to face. It s just a rollercoaster ride. There are ups and downs to it. As long as I am finding the good and doing something to help others I m fulfilling my goals. MEET THE MAN WHO IS OUT TO BRING A NEW GENERATION OF SHOOTERS TO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS One way to get boys and girls interested in the shooting sports is to introduce them to this activity in the form of a school sport just like football and basketball. One of the most innovative programs in the country using this model is the USA High School Clay Target League which was the brainstorm of retired marketing executive and avid trap shooter Jim Sable of Plymouth Minnesota. It started back in 2001 Jim said in a phone interview. I was a member of the Plymouth Gun Club and since I had recently retired I was able to spend more time at the club shooting. One day a delivery truck showed up with some targets we had ordered and the driver said I need a couple of you younger guys to help me move a couple of pallets. He was looking at me when he said that Sable laughed. This is when I realized that the members of our gun club were all getting up in years...especially if I was the younger guy and had just retired. It was then that I understood that we had a much bigger problem. The shooting sports had very few youngsters involved and if this didn t change there would be no shooting sports in the future. After some some back-of-the-napkin calculations Jim and his fellow members determined that the average age of their gun club was 56 years. At this rate he felt there would be no club in the very near future and with a few phone calls determined that many if not most of the gun clubs were tenuously hanging on due to the aging membership. Jim Sable decided to do something. STARTED WITH JUST 6 KIDS WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 69 IT STARTED WITH RESEARCH Since he came from a marketing background Jim did what smart marketers do. With the help of the state s Department of Natural Resources he created a survey to determine the state of affairs in other gun clubs in the state. The results were unfortunately as bleak as he had feared. The first thing we learned was that 10 percent of the gun clubs in the state had gone out of business Jim noted. Another 10 percent of the clubs were hanging on by a thread. We also found that the average age of a gun club member in the state of Minnesota was 60 We quickly realized that this problem was most likely statewide and probably national in scope but we could only tackle one state at a time. We decided that we needed to attract young people in large numbers if we were going to save the sport. We had to get into the schools he said. But before going to the schools I rounded up a few high school students and did focus group interviews with them. I posed the question If your school was going to offer an activity like trap shooting what would it take to get you interested enough to join The same two answers came up over and over again. First these kids wanted to be able to letter in the sport and secondly they wanted to trap shooting team to be featured in the school year book. Marketing people know that if someone tells you want they want you give it to them he laughed. DEVINE INTERVENTION Realizing that there is a demand from the industry (the gun clubs) and the potential participants (the high school kids) was one thing. However getting the schools to agree to this new sports was something quite different and much more of a challenge. Most school administrators have understandable concerns about the safety of a sport which involves guns. 70 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM Jim needed some devine intervention. I was sitting in my church waiting for the service to begin when I noted a tiny ad in the church bulletin he said. It was a solicitation from the community outreach coordinator of a local school for adults who had a special interest or talent to mentor kids. This gave me an idea. The next Monday at 8 a.m. I called the number on the ad and was connected to a high school administrator who was in charge of the school s mentoring programs. She sounded very happy to hear from someone about this program and I said before you get too excited I want you to know that I would like to mentor kids in the shooting sports. She took a deep breath and said that s amazing. Apparently a young lady had just been in her office asking about the possiblity of getting shooting classes. The girl didn t want to kill anything. She just wanted to learn how to shoot sporting clays. The school agreed to allow me to begin this mentoring for shooting sports and I asked the young lady if she had any friends or siblings who would like to learn about shooting and she did a younger brother and four other friends who wanted to join the program. So the program was launched with 6 kids The program has gotten considerably bigger than those first 6 kids. We have doubled in size every year Jim noted. We went from 6 kids to 13 kids. Then to 29 kids which went to 104 kids the next year and 257 kids the next year. This year we have about 400 schools involved in the shooting sports program with about 7 000 kids participating making this the largest shooting event in the world GENDER AND ADAPTIVE NEUTRAL This is the only sports activity in the U.S. that is termed gender neutral. Jim noted. Boy and girls compete on the same team as do adaptive students. We have students in wheelchairs on the same team as everyone else. We include everybody. More and more of these kids are getting scholarship offers for college he said. At our state championship which this year will be an 8-day event (June 14 21) we are having more and more people requesting booth space at the event. Colleges trade schools and post-secondary schools of all types are wanting to reach these kids. College has gotten so expensive and it s great that some of these kids are getting 4-year scholarships he said. One of the girls I know who is graduating this year is going to the University of Alabama. I said how in the world did you pick Alabama coming from way up here in Minnesota Her mother answered right away and said it was the full scholarship that did it She s going to be shooting for the school. It s also amazingly versatile. Here are some easy-to-make catfish recipes from The Outpost. SOUTHERN FRIED CATFISH Prep Time 20 min Cook Time 40 min Serves 8 Everybody needs a least one great recipe for southern fried catfish and this is it. For the fried catfish 1 liter canola approximately as needed for deep-frying 3 cups cornmeal approximately as needed for breading 2 tablespoons Irvine Spices Cajun Blackfish spice (you may need more if you use more cornmeal for breading) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 pounds catfish fillets Lemon wedges for service For the tartar sauce 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 4 cup mayonnaise 2 scallions (white and tender green parts only) minced 2 teaspoons drained sweet pickle relish Directions In a small bowl combine the olive oil mayonnaise scallions and relish to make a tartar sauce. Refrigerate until needed. Heat oil in deep-fryer to 350 degrees F. Combine cornmeal Blackfish Spice and salt and pepper to taste. Dredge catfish fillets in seasoned cornmeal. Deep-fry coated pieces in batches until they are cooked through about 10 minutes. (For basic reference use the manufacturer s instructions for your deep fryer for similar foods then test the fish see that it is fork tender.) Allow to drain on paper towels and serve with tartar sauce and fresh lemon wedges (to squeeze lemon juice over the fish). 72 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM ART S SMOKED CATFISH If you like grillin try this one. Prep Time 10 min Inactive Prep Time 1 hr Cook Time 45 min Creamy Orange Dill Sauce 2 3 cup plain yogurt 2 3 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 clove garlic finely chopped 1 tablespoon finely chopped green onion 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley 1 tablespoon finely chopped dill Dash hot sauce Salt and freshly ground black pepper Add all the ingredients to a serving bowl and serve with the smoked catfish. Directions Combine the buttermilk and hot sauce in a 13 by 9-inch casserole dish. Add catfish fillets and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. After 1 hour remove the catfish from the refrigerator and pat dry with paper towels. Set up your grill for indirect heat at a medium-low temperature about 275 degrees F. Mix together the oregano lemon peel and salt pepper in a small bowl. Lightly coat the fish with olive oil and sprinkle the seasoning evenly over the catfish fillets. Put the catfish on the grill away from the hot coals. Smoke the catfish until it is fully cooked through and golden brown about 45 minutes. Remove the fish from the grill to a serving platter and serve with the Orange Dill Cream Sauce. Cut Catfish fillets into strips about - inches wide and batter according to directions on the Cajun Injector Chicken Fry bag. Fry until golden brown remove and drain on paper towels. Toss Catfish strips in Wildly Wicked Wing Sauce to coat evenly. Heat tortillas in an oven or microwave until warm and pliable. Assemble the wrap by adding Cole slaw Catfish strips and diced tomatoes. PEPPERED CATFISH cup vegetable oil cup lemon juice 2 tbs. Worcestershire sauce 3 tbs. hot pepper sauce 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. white pepper 2 tsp. Old Bay Seasoning 2 lbs. Catfish - cut into serving pieces. dash of paprika Combine the first 7 ingredients in a bowl. Place fish on a well-greased fish basket about 4 inches above the coals. Baste with the sauce and sprinkle with paprika. Cook for about 6 minutes then turn baste and season again and cook for another 7 to 10 minutes until fish flakes easily with a fork. At least that s what the folks who have been working to get a new law on gun suppressors on the books. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (AFT) has a new rule enforce Rule 41F which takes effect on July 13 2016. Proponents of suppressor celebrate one aspect of the law in particular. It is the removal of the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) sign-off on NFA applications. Previously applicants for NFA items (suppressors short-barreled rifles fully automatic firearms and others) were required to obtain a certification from a CLEO. This many gun owners and advocates argued allowed officials to arbitrarily deny Americans from owning NFA items. Now the new rule only mandates applicants to notify CLEO s instead. This is Major Victory for the Gun Suppressor Industry For the first time in 82 years local law enforcement will no longer have de facto veto power over any NFA applications said Knox Williams President and Executive Director of the American Suppressor Association. While their inclusion in the process made sense in 1934 before background checks or even computers existed the removal of this antiquated measure from the NFA process is a major victory for the suppressor and NFA communities. Rule 41F is not a complete panacea for firearm owners. Even the ATF estimates that NFA wait times could double once the rule change goes into effect. This is due mostly to the rule change around fingerprinting for trusts and corporations. After July 13th two fingerprint cards as well as a passport photo of each person listed on a trust are going to be required each time you want to purchase a NFA item under the Trust. AVOID THE SLOWDOWN BUY NOW Purchasing a silencer now is one work-around. All pending applications submitted before the rule change will be grandfathered under current rules. Industry spokesmen note that trusts are still advantageous for a number of legal reasons even after 41F goes into effect. First off the Waco Brothers are not from Waco Texas but rather hail from Chicago Illinois. Secondly their tenth album entitled Going Down in History manages to capture that bluesy country infectiously raw feeling that the Brothers lay down in their live gigs. If you haven t had the pleasure of hearing their music some say they are similar to Firewater Murder By Death Drive-By Truckers the Clash While this band has been playing together for more than 20 years and has the usual cult following that results from being known as a terrific live band it s surprising that their audience while rabid is limited. Going Down in History might change that. The music and persona of the Waco Brothers was summed up nicely by Ken Tucker the pop music critic for NPR s Fresh Air and Editor-at-Large at Entertainment Weekly. Don t know quite where I heard that but none-the-less I ve taken it as fact. Been sticking with it for over 60 years. So with that in mind I m going fishing. Will I see you on the lake Tell you what recruit a little kid maybe one who doesn t get to go fishing much and take him or her. If he has a dad at home take him too. Why those Easy to catch just put on a minnow on a 1 16th ounce Road Runner under a cork or float of some kind and cruise around the shallow brushy coves or around a dock. You ll catch a bunch. If you get a bird working wake them up. Shotgun choice Don t overload with a 3 and inch mag 12. Use a turkey load in a 20 gauge and let the bird get within 30 yards. It ll work. Make the morning special make it fun. This is about you and them not some kind of turkey hunting competition. Know that this is a good thing and they will remember it always. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 93 By Jason Martin 52 SHADES OF ADVENTURE When I started this challenge of 52 adventures in 52 weeks I really didn t fully understand what I was getting myself into. My wife suggested that we do a different hike every week. So I started thinking that would a pretty good idea for an article. But then I realized that maybe I couldn t hike every week but I might be on a hunt or fishing trip or some other exciting adventure that would quality. I amended her idea and poof 52 adventures in 52 weeks was born. What started as a fairly simple idea has opened pandora s box. I have started getting emails text messages and calls from all sorts of people with ideas for my next adventure. The number one question that I get when I see friends now is Where are you going for your next adventure I have also had people tell me that they love watching and living vicariously through what I am doing. I suppose in short people are enjoying the fact that I am out there trying to live life to the fullest. This month has been a lot like Tim McGraw s song Live Like You Are Dying. To quote the song I went skydiving. I went Rocky Mountain climbing. After realizing that I had those two I honestly started trying to find a bull named FuManchu to ride. I guess that will have to be an adventure for a later date. Plus it may have to be a mechanical bull. But I have never actually ridden a mechanical bull so I suppose there is some adventure in that perhaps. 94 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM photo Travis Wade I WENT SKYDIVING Yep....I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane If I am being honest I never intended on every doing this. When my daughter turned 18 three years ago she and my wife starting talking about jumping. A few weeks ago that talk turned into action. We were actually on our way back from another adventure hiking Arabia Mountain. You can read about that one too a bit later. The girls started discussing it calls were made and the next thing we know they have a reservation booked for the next day. Over the three years that they have discussed doing this I was always told that I was too heavy to tandem. That made sense to me and who was I to argue the weight capacity of a parachute. To me that is one of those items that we don t want to test exactly how far we can push the limits. The next day arrives and we drive an hour and a half west of Atlanta to Skydive Georgia s facility and runway. As we walk into the building an older guy approaches us and says Who s jumping To which I reply The girls are. He proceeds to question why I am not jumping and I am responding with what I believe to be a valid reason about the weight. In the next 30 seconds things changed drastically for me that day. He scoffed at me...literally. I think his exact words were If my fat can jump then so can you And he was considerably larger than me. Get over there and sign up he said. I was signed up and ready to jump in the next few minutes. In hind sight it was probably best that I didn t have time to think about it much. But then there was the wait. We were an hour early and they were an hour late. For two long hours I had to sit there and think about how many things could possibly go wrong. I sat and watched groups of people one after the other load into the plane jump and land. I watched Skydive Georgia s employees scramble to repack the shoots so that the next group could get rolling. I watched the tandem instructors jump time and time again in those two hours. I sat and wondered when did we get the safety speech I thought when will we get instructions on how to do this. Nope...nadda. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 95 https www.youtube.com watch v kf51JiNh-XA Then they called our names. After waiting for over two hours we were strapped up and ready to go within minutes. I must say at this point that I was considerably nervous while the girls were giddy and yucking it up. I tried my best to put on my MAN face and not let the anxiety show but my wife noticed. I supposed after being together almost 25 years that she can read me pretty well. We get on the plane and my instructor starts clipping snapping and talking in my ear. I did have the thought as he was connecting the two of us together on the ride up that this guy does NOT want anything to happen up here either because if it does he dies too All the while I am watching us get higher and higher...14 500 feet high to be precise. What little instructions that I did get was on the plane ride up. The instructions were as follows Cross your arms on the way out. Tip your head back as we jump. Enjoy the ride Note that I am not disparaging my instructor by any means. Actually after the fact I am glad that he didn t put a bunch of instructions and guidelines that I had to follow. I will also give him credit that on the ride up and even during the jump he had a certain calm about him. Every so often he would assure me I got you I am not going to let anything happen to you We finally reached our altitude destination and the door was opened. Big deep breath The guy who was the most nervous...yep...I was first to jump. Once we hit the door there wasn t much time to reconsider. We were there and then we weren t. But then....WOW I wasn t expecting to skydive that day. I hadn t no expectations of what it would actually be like. But once I jumped the adrenaline kicked in. The ground rushing at me at approximately 120 MPH. The wind blowing extremely hard in your face. But there was also the distraction of a videographer in my face. Once the shoot opened the adrenaline ride became more serene. There were mountains to the west of us. The city skyline off faintly in the distance to the east. Then he gave me the reigns to drive . Pull on the right and turn one way. Pull to the left and turn the other way. And like that we were coming in for a landing safe and sound back on earth. 96 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM I must say that the adrenaline stayed with me virtually the rest of the day and that night as well. I have done a few things in my life but falling 14 500 feet has to rank up there as the most intense The irony of the day was the person whose idea it was and was cool as a cucumber going up was the one that kissed the ground when she landed. I WENT ROCKY MOUNTAIN CLIMBING Well this fit for making the Tim McGraw song analogy but I didn t really climb the Rockies per se although I have hiked several trails. I did however ski down them this month for adventure number two. Every year for the past 12 years we have made our way out to Colorado to ski. For years we skied a little known resort called Monarch. It was great for the kids to learn to ski and far more affordable than the bigger ski resorts. But the last few years we have gone to either Beaver Creek or Vail. This year we chose to ski Beaver Creek again. I am not the most agile skier anymore. In fact I am not sure that I ever really was. But I do love it. Give me a big wide long blue run and let me stop from time to time on the way down and I am a happy man. We typically will get several days of skiing in while we are there but this year we changed things up a bit. Instead of one day of fishing and three days of skiing this year we flipped it. Our trip to Colorado afforded me the opportunity to have two adventures in one trip. On our day to ski we were all running a bit behind so we were all trying to get as many runs in as we could as fast as we could. Instead of taking the typically green run warm up we went straight to the top. Granted that our path did go through a couple of greens the bulk were fairly tough blue runs. For those not familiar with skiing green is the easiest...well except for the bunny slopes...blue is intermediate and black diamond or double black are the most difficult. We avoid black diamonds these days as the knees can t handle the moguls much. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 97 The first run of the day took us almost a half hour to get down the mountain and that was only stopping to make sure the group was all still in tack. We headed right back to the top and other than a slight diversion pretty well made the exact same run as the first time. The rest of the day we varied our paths slightly but stuck fairly true to form as the previous two runs. Beaver Creek is an amazing resort. It has over 150 trails with almost half of those falling into the intermediate terrain. They also have 24 lifts. Lines to get on the lifts are typically a few minutes but nothing more than to catch your breath a bit. If you can imagine the mountain can accommodate as many as 44 000 people at one time. The longest and probably our favorite run (Centennial) is over 2.75 miles. After a break to get back to the house and clean up the day was capped off with a snow cat ride back to the top of the mountain for dinner at Beano s Cabin. We were treated on the way up and back down to the most gorgeous snow fall I have ever seen. In total we actually got over a foot of snow that night making for fishing the next day a tad bit chilly. I GO FISHING NOT TO FIND MYSELF BUT TO LOSE MYSELF I am a fisherman I never thought that I would say that. But punned intended...I am hooked. Granted I am a fisherman in the sense that I like to go. I enjoy it far more than I used to. But let me explain why I sort of got turned off from fishing. 1. Back in college I went fly fishing with a buddy down the Clinch River and he forgot to check when they released the water. He about drowned me. 2. I just haven t been very good at it. I would spend the bulk of my time getting out a knot or breaking a line on tree stump in the water...or worse in a tree on the bank. This month I was able to take not one but three. days. of a guided fishing trip and it was amazing. The first day we got to know our guide Andy from Vail Valley Anglers. I must admit that in his first short tutorial I learned more about fly fishing that I had at any point previously. Sometimes I guess you just need to hear it said the right way. I think the biggest thing that I learned was how to set the hook. We split up into two groups. The two old men who we originally deemed as the Dominators versus the two young bucks Team Mo Money. There was a standing bet each day to see who could catch the most and who caught the biggest. There is just something primal about bragging rights to being the best fisherman. Day one was a half day wading excursion down the Eagle River. The DOMS (later determined that stood for Dirty Old Men and not Dominators) whipped the boys pretty good. I reeled in four decent size trout and my partner Jay Guynes 98 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM pulled in eight. Team Mo Money had a measly four total between the two guys. Day two was without question my favorite day fishing of my life We had a full day set to drift down the Roaring Fork River. I could not recommend this experience enough. Our guides from Vail Valley Angler Andy and Woody were top notch. The boat ride down the river in and of itself was spectacular. There is so much of this country that is just phenomenal to experience what Mother Nature has for us to see and enjoy. But the day was about snagging some trout. We were on the water that day for about 7 hours. I managed to pull in some of the biggest fish of my life as well as being top dog in numbers with 10 trout that day. Jay once again netted eight. That is 18 good size trout which means about every 20 minutes we had another one on the line. We renamed the young guys to Team NO Money since they had to buy lunch after the first day. Jake Guynes is recently graduated college and started his first real job. Hayden Guynes is a sophomore at LSU. Needless to say that they are not rolling in the dough quite yet so buying hurts a bit. But day two did not bode well again as we out fished them by 13 that day. Day three was another opportunity to float but this time we headed down the Colorado River for only a half day. Conditions were a bit tougher on day three as we had gotten over a foot of snow the night before. The big question for the day was....could Team Homeless (they got renamed again) take down the DOMS The answer was an emphatic YES Perhaps the two old farts got complacent after dominating the first two days. Perhaps the weather sided to youth because I must say that I was pretty darn cold. But regardless the young bucks were able to overtake us in day three. Jake had an impressive ten fish day while Hayden still only got one. But it wasn t till almost the very end of the day that Jay and I got off the snide and got a fish each. It was getting so desperate that when I finally hooked one our guide Andy jumped in the water and netted him immediately. There was not going to be any chance for that one to get off the line. On a positive that fish may have been the biggest I caught that week. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 99 This is our third year of working with the guys from Vail Valley Anglers. There website is www.vailvalleyanglers.com BEING OUTDOORS IS IN Typically on most of our hikes we go through the woods up a mountain and travel on a dirt path. Arabia Mountain was quite the opposite. The park is just east of Atlanta. The trail covers an immense granite mound with multiple lakes and boast over 30 miles of hiking trails. The 360 degree views at the top are nothing less than stunning. The summit is riddled with craters some filled with water while other host some extremely unique vegetation. It almost feels as though you are walking on another planet. The trail can be somewhat challenging at times with a steady incline but is a short hike to the top. We chose to explore a bit further going back down to one of the lakes and around to the other side of the mountain. All told we hiked about six miles that day. When I set this goal six miles seemed like forever. AN OLD TIMER IS MORE THAN A POCKET KNIFE Technological advancements have effected every part of life. It has even impacted the way I hunt. Gone are the days when I wonder if my hunting companions are seeing game. I received 15 game reports via text message opening morning. Gone are the days of exciting campfire stories about the size and spread of that animal that was just out of range. Several of those text messages had video snippets of game attached. The anticipation of returning to camp to hear about other s experiences were relegated to antiquity. The stories were told before my boots hit the ground. All lamenting aside the technology is not all bad. At our camp with five bar service we warn each other by text message about game movements. This can be valuable information. And if someone has a safety issue in the woods help is only a text or call away. Likewise there is no longer a need to mark the path to your stand with fluorescent tacks on trees ( As a poor high school and college student I used toilet paper strands pushed into the forks of saplings and hoped it didn t rain). Just set a pin in your phone. The threat of a lost hunter has been greatly reduced. In some ways I appreciate the technology. It makes for a safer experience. By Randy Hall - Attorney at Law TOO MUCH INFORMATION (TMI) But in other ways I abhor the immediate flow of information. As I sat some 25 odd feet off the ground strapped to a tree on opening day technology reared its ugly head. In fact it stole my hunt. It robbed me of my peace. It called off the only competition I am young enough to play. And it took without asking my private place of reflection and regeneration. Or did it Indeed my solitude was interrupted when my smart phone screen scrolled the news of the Paris terrorist attacks. Soon thereafter vibrations from others in my party signaled a digital conversation that was not about hunting. As the fog was lifted by the sun rising over the ridge I continued to learn about the event as reports of the rising death toll came across my phone. Senseless acts of murder. Emotions escalated from saddened and sickened to angered. Bad news always spawns the search for answers. This particular news caused me to reflect upon times when I would sit around deer camp and listen to the old timers espouse their wisdom of life politics and world issues. It s where the bathroom was just beyond the light of the camp fire. I can still see the rock circled fire pits surrounded by men sitting not on chairs but on tree stumps or benches fashioned from 102 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM plank wood. Their tan faces were illuminated only by the glow of the orange coals and yellow flames. These were not educated men with letters behind their names. No they were men with calloused hands and faces hardened by their labor under the sun. They didn t weave streams of profanity into their statements for dramatic effect or to justify their positions. The simple pauses inflections and accents in their voices coupled with the deep lines on their faces served as their authority. Nor did they get their courage from a bottle of booze. Their wisdom was largely derived from country tenets mores and wisdom handed down from their own fathers who were just like them. Their offerings were not derived from internet stories but rather from personal experiences of success courage pain and disappointment. Word of mouth was the only method of passing down their truths. And those campfires served as a venue to do just that. My memories are couched in terms of when I was a kid whose biggest concern was if my chores were done and my belly was full. I was that age when girls were an issue but then really they were not. In those days children were made to be seen and not heard. With no rightful voice to join I could only wait with anticipation on the next word. The next climax of the next captivating story and the life lesson that was to be learned therefrom. Which supports an often cited old timer tenet of wisdom you learn more with your mouth shut then you do with it open. I m glad I listened as I continue to hold most of their truths dear. Those men were my old timers. They are since long gone from this life. WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM 103 I VE BECOME ONE. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN At 54 years old with a head full of white hair I suppose to some I might qualify as an old timer. As a matter of fact I was so referenced recently in a Wal-Mart parking lot. It seems as though I was taking too long to park. Unfortunately we old timers even with our smart phones are largely dismissed as out of touch uninformed and old fashioned. What a shame. While the issues that face us are factually different from my old timer s generation the problems have not theoretically changed just the names of the perpetrators. The news of Paris gave me pause to reflect and consider a hand full of truths I have come to know and many that I learned or a time appropriate version thereof from my old timers over those campfires long ago burned out. I am convinced that some 2000 years ago a certain Jewish carpenter hung on a tree. My old timers were unified in this belief. I am convinced that it is anyone s right to disagree with me on the forgoing. The fact of the matter is that there simply was not much disagreement about this subject among my old timers. I am convinced that it s not your right to eradicate me off the face of the earth because of who I am or what I believe. While my old timer s wisdom was rooted in stories of World War II Nazism and the worldwide fear and terror that resulted their message was exactly the same and apposite to issues we face today. I am convinced that the only solution to terrorism is brunt brutal force. Talking and radicalism are mutually exclusive subjects. It s the metaphorical difference between quarterbacks and linebackers. Each serves a purpose at the appointed time and place. But neither can do the other s job because one is going to get hurt or the other embarrassed. My old timers grew up believing that Patton McArthur and Truman had the right idea about how to deal with people who attack our way of life. History proves them to be true. I am convinced that while retribution may at times be in order the guiding principle for any decision is ultimately based upon survival. Most of my old timers were raised in the Great Depression. They knew of hunger pangs. They understood the feeling of being financially and emotionally defeated. Most of them had either served in Korea or World War II. They had seen their friends family and neighbors perish. Giving their life to others was an accepted risk of living. I am convinced that it is doubtful my children will enjoy a full lifetime of reflection and regeneration while being voluntarily strapped to a tree as I have. I don t know the how s or the why s but the woods at least as I know them will be gone for one reason or another. While my old timers knew times were changing I do not believe they understood how rapidly the world would change for my generation. For example most of their phones were either nonexistent or party lines. The ones they did have were used for valid purposes as opposed to spreading hatred gossip and inconsequential news. I am convinced that the framers and writers of our Constitution would roll over in their graves if they knew how their words and intentions have been skewed to patronize special interest groups. My old timers lacked the education to understand the guarantees of the Constitution. However their own innate sense of the law and right and wrong was amazingly consistent with our Bill of Rights. Their message was clear the lines of right and wrong will be slowly blurred by exceptions if we don t take a stand. The way they saw it before you know it the old wrong will be accepted as new right and old right will be deemed old fashioned. In retrospect they were in a sense prophets. I am convinced that if not in my lifetime then shortly thereafter the walls of separation between Americans which have been built by wealth or the lack thereof color race creed religion marital status gender sexual orientation and whatever other factions exist whether legitimate or not will be torn down by our common desire to survive. My old timers already knew this from their experiences from the Great Depression and its aftermath. They spoke and warned of another in the generations to come. 104 WWW.THEOUTPOSTLIFE.COM I am convinced that the folks who attack my Second Amendment Right to bear arms will someday knock on my door wanting to borrow a gun. All of my old timers had at least one gun. It was theirs. And don t try to take it away from them. It had nothing to do with the Second Amendment. They needed it to survive. I am convinced that I need to pass my hunting skills on to whomever will listen because they might come in handy some day. To my old timers this was a fact of life and their duty as men. I am convinced that if we continue to individually take the stance that it s not my problem those problems will become unsolvable. In the minds of my old timers your problem is my problem because you are my neighbor and my brother. Back at camp the news of the Paris terrorist attacks dominated our conversation. The talk was supposed to be about our morning hunting experiences. About weather interpretations and how the moon effected the game movement. And arguments of whether the rut was in full swing or had not even started yet. Of shots passed made missed and hit. No it was all about the senseless murder of innocent people. I wonder what my old timers would have to say about that.
