The registry will be developed and managed by a third-party vendor and CRN plans to announce the results of that search later this spring (see news item on page 12). In a phone conversation I asked Steve Mister CRN s president and CEO about the initiation of the database and how it would help retailers. He explained that CRN s members were looking for what they could do as an industry to gain transparency for regulators and consumers and provide a way for people to learn about the products they are buying and to evaluate them and perhaps steer clear of products that are not being completely transparent about what s in the product or where the product is made. That was the genesis of this Mister said. Initially we looked at the Office of Dietary Supplement (ODS)--the National Institutes of Health has a database of supplement labels. We looked at that and we are now requiring our members to participate in it but we really felt that it didn t go far enough. There was more that needed to be done and we weren t going to be able to move ODS to do everything that we wanted them to do. So the best thing to do was to create a separate registry for the industry overseen by the industry. The new registry Mister said will consist of two parts. The first will provide basic information about a product most of which would be attainable from reading the label. But it will have the ingredients any claims on the label third-party certification seals the name of the manufacturer Publisher Daniel McSweeney Editorial Director DanM VRMmedia.com Associate Russ Fields Publisher RussF VRMmedia.com Advertising Gary Pfaff Sales Manager GaryP VRMmedia.com Editor-in-Chief Janet Poveromo JanetP VRMmedia.com I and who to contact if you want to report an adverse event. This will be accessible to anybody in the world who has an internet connection and can log-in to this website. They will be able to search the registry look for products with certain ingredients in them and search by brand names. It is the second tier that will address retailers concerns more specifically by allowing retailer users to obtain more product information. Retailers will be granted permission by the marketers to access more information such as FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) inspections more information about the ingredients whether there are any new dietary ingredients in the products and if there are has the company filed their notification for them. Also whether or not the company filed a structure function claim for the product and more information on certifications for the product or the facility where it is made. That will give retailers ability to learn more about the products that they re putting on their shelf. Mister said once the database is up and running he hopes that retailers will begin using it to make decisions about what they carry in their stores. If a product is not in the registry and the marketer is refusing to provide this basic information he said we hope that retailers might think twice about if they really want a product for their customer if the company isn t willing to be transparent about what s in it and where it comes from. When it comes to the industry trade associations he added We re cooperating on a number of initiatives that will contribute toward a stronger more accountable industry--CRN is taking the lead on this one and we will lend support as others take the lead on other initiatives. Those images are pure relaxation. But the relaxing nature of coconut isn t the only benefit of the tropical treat. Coconut has been a popular food product for centuries and recently the natural products industry has seen a surge in coconut products that extend well past the beach. Coconut is making an emergence as a leading product across shopping categories. It all began with coconut water a few years ago and has been building ever since said Dave Rosenberg food category manager for Illinois-based NOW Foods Living Now and Ellyndale Foods. The surge in popularity of coconut products is partly due to a new-found realization of the many health benefits as well as the sudden availability of a wide range of coconutderived products from beverages to alternative sweeteners to cooking oils to personal care. T BY CORINNE ANDERSON Health Benefits In an article published on PLOS ONE authors Bee F. Gunn Luc Baudouin and Kenneth M. Olsen noted as a portable source of food water fuel and construction materials the coconut played a fundamental role in human migrations and the development of civilization across the humid tropics. Coconut oil (Cocus nucifera) is a traditional dietary staple of the people of Asia Africa and the Pacific Islands and has been used in ayurvedic herbalism for thousands of years Rosenberg said. Even today the coconut is one of the most important tree crops in the world. However there has been debate regarding coconut s benefits on cholesterol. According to the article from WebMD The Truth About Coconut Oil users should consider the high saturated fat content. While studies point to coconut having a boosting affect to HDL (good cholesterol) it also has the potential to raise your LDL (bad cholesterol). It s not known if the rise in beneficial cholesterol outweighs any rise in harmful cholesterol the article noted. So what s so great about it Coconut oil increases HDL levels and improves the overall cholesterol ratio. It also helps protect the body against viruses bacteria yeast and fungus said Tom 8 VITAMIN RETAILER Meredith co-founder of Californiabased Coffee Blocks. Coconut oil also contains MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) which convert into a quick source of energy for the brain. MCTs can increase overall energy use and help burn fat with the right diet. MCTs like lauric acid and caprylic acid (found in coconut) are more easily digested than other types of fats and are less likely to be stored in the body as fat Rosenberg added. Numerous studies have shown that substituting MCT for other dietary fats helps to support a healthy weight and body composition. In addition contrary to what was formerly believed coconut oil does not negatively impact serum lipids or cholesterol levels Rosenberg said. Short-term studies have suggested medium-chain fatty acids such as lauric acid do not raise serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as much as long-chain fatty acids said Katherine Zeratsky RD LD in a Mayo Clinic article. However consuming too much will result in extra calories which alerts the body that it s time to store more fat. Even if the stored fat doesn t come directly from the coconut oil high doses of coconut oil could still indirectly contribute to weight stagnation gain. more nutritious oils such as coconut Rosenberg noted. Coconut oil was in the right place at the right time Meredith said. Consumers were looking for natural food replacements for processed vegetable oils and trans fats. In addition high-quality coconut oil has become easier and cheaper to find. Aside from its health benefits [coconut oil] has a high smoke point and doesn t break down quickly when heated he added. According to the Cleveland Clinic the smoke point is the temperature that the oil starts smoking which produces toxic fumes and harmful free radicals. According to NOW coconut oil s smoke point ranges up to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. NOW offers NOW Real Food Organic Virgin Coconut Oil which is an unrefined cold-pressed oil and does not utilize any solvents in the manufacturing process. It is one of the best sources for medium chain fatty acids and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids the company said. It s a simple lifestyle change that goes a long way Meredith said noting that consumers utilizing coconut in the kitchen will realize the most benefits. I think more people are seeing coconut oil as a healthy alternative to other cooking oils. Coconut Butter Providing an alternative cooking oil isn t all there is. People with dietary restrictions are also finding uses for coconut oil. Individuals following a gluten-free vegan or paleo diet enjoy using coconut oil as a butter replacement said Madalyn Crum associate communications manager at California-based Nutiva. Nutiva Organic Buttery Coconut Oil can be used in many ways. It s great as a spread popcorn topping or in baking and cooking recipes. The delicious buttery flavor is vegan so it s a great butter replacement for people following a dairy-free diet Crum said. The vegan buttery-flavor is made from pure certified organic non-GMO (genetically modified organism) plants including sunflower coconut and mint. One of the applications we re Cooking With Coconut Oil While high doses of coconut oil aren t recommended many of the betterknown cooking oils such as vegetable oil have been found to be less healthy so consumers are turning to alternative (Continued on page 28) WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com nowsolutions for info about this advertiser INDUSTRYNEWS Got News Send news press releases to Editor Vitamin Retailer 431 Cranbury Road Ste. C East Brunswick NJ 08816 JanetP VRMmedia.com NPA 19th Annual Natural Products Day he Natural Products Association (NPA) hosted its 2016 Natural Products Day (NPD) on April 1213 in Washington D.C. One hundred representatives from the retail and manufacturing sectors of the supplement industry met with members of Congress from 20 states. It s important for members of Congress to understand how natural products contribute to the healthy lifestyles of millions of Americans and the impact the industry has on state and local economies said Daniel Fabricant PhD executive director and CEO of NPA. Natural Products Day is an opportunity for NPA members to build on existing relationships with lawmakers and cultivate new ones. The conference kicked off with a Welcome to Washington reception lead by NPA s government relations team followed by an open house reception at NPA s new national headquarters in downtown D.C. NPD attendees included retailers suppliers and other industry members. They met with more than 75 members of Congress and staff to educate them on the industry s issues and natural products role in preventive health and overall wellness. During these meetings attendees T shared position papers provided by NPA to make certain offices were fully informed on the current issues in the industry and on the health and economic benefits of natural products. Fabricant along with NPA s veteran lobbyists led advocacy training giving attendees an outline on how to best inform their elected officials on the natural industry and current issues to focus on while talking with legislators and congressional staff. Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus member Rep. Reid Ribble (RWI) addressed the attendees voicing his support of the industry and admiration for the industry supporters taking the time to come to Capitol Hill. He also gave the attendees helpful advice on meeting with legislators and congressional staff. Following the advocacy training the NPA Political Action Committee (NPA PAC) hosted a highly attended reception where Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) spoke of his support for the natural products industry. The NPA PAC is currently the largest PAC of any trade association in the natural products industry. Additionally legislators and staff also learned about a grassroots campaign that NPA is currently running regarding the Health Savings Act of 2016 which would allow reimbursement for dietary supplements through Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Savings Account (FSA). The more voices we have advocating for the natural industry will make our efforts even more successful and our industry stronger said Fabricant. NPD is a successful day for our industry but it shouldn t stop there we need everyone to maintain communication with their senators and representatives and keep them informed on the current issues. We encourage everyone to continue to make our voices heard through NPA s grassroots efforts and encouraging others to do the same which will unite this industry as one robust voice. The registry will be developed and managed by a third-party vendor and CRN plans to announce the results of that search later this spring. CRN President and CEO Steve Mister stated This is one step we re making to take back our industry from the lawbreakers from the renegades from the companies that spurn regulation. Our member companies have turned a corner and are fully engaged in efforts to separate the legitimate manufacturers marketing healthful products from the hit-and-run fly-bynighters selling quick fixes and illegal drugs wrapped with a supplement label. We need all companies who care about our consumers and the sustained growth of this industry to join with us in this initiative. According to CRN the initiative is the latest in a growing number of the association s self-regulatory projects and comes at a time when the T supplement industry is primed to work more closely together and with regulators to help solve the problems that have attracted increasing public scrutiny. The days of the regulators sitting on their hands are long gone and we appreciate that we re seeing stronger enforcement action of the law Mister said. Mister noted that the product registry would initially serve the regulators and the retail community with the ultimate goal of providing industry accountability to consumers as well. We re moving in a deliberate step-wise fashion and layering initiatives that when combined will address transparency ingredient verification and GMP (good manufacturing practice) compliance. CRN has formed a working group to resolve the specifics of the product registry which is anticipated to contain multiple tiers of product information-- some public-facing which will be accessible to anyone and will permit participating manufacturers marketers to add their products at no charge and an add-on component which will provide more in-depth information about the products to specified audiences such as regulators and retailers. Earlier this year CRN announced what it called a first and necessary step toward improving transparency in the supplement industry by requiring all CRN members as a condition of membership submit their supplement product labels to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD). Mister said that the industry product registry will serve as a companion piece to the ODS Label Database which we understand is an important tool for the scientific research community. CRN continues to support ODS s database and we intend for the product registry to interface in some way with the label database so companies will not have to engage in duplicative efforts. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) withdrew his amendment to the FY 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would require supplements sold on military bases to be verified by a third-party amid strong opposition by the supplement industry. Enacted on an annual basis by Congress NDAA legislation establishes budget and policy parameters for the Department of Defense. Blumenthal a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee stated his intention to offer a dietary supplement related amendment to the Senate version of the FY 2017 NDAA during the Committee s consideration of the bill. The Senate Armed Services Committee is marking up the FY 2017 NDAA bill in a closed session. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) has been in active communication with other industry associations and the offices of senators who serve on the Armed Services Committee to voice opposition to the 12 VITAMIN RETAILER Blumenthal amendment. Because Blumenthal withdrew the amendment U.S. military personnel won t face unnecessary restrictions that limit their personal and informed choices to use safe dietary supplements. Blumenthal and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) who are both long-time critics of the federal regulatory structure for dietary supplements introduced a similar amendment last year when the FY 2016 NDAA measure was being considered by the Senate. However the Blumenthal-Durbin third-party verifier amendment was never allowed to come to a vote. AHPA and the regulated supplement industry appreciate Sen. Blumenthal withdrawing this amendment said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. Dietary supplement companies are currently required to comply with a host of federal regulations including current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) requirements that ensure the safety and quality of supplements sold in the U.S. This amendment would have created a redundant and expensive burden for companies to sell products on military bases effectively limiting service members access to high-quality supplements. McGuffin further stated AHPA and the other industry associations will remain vigilant as the FY 2017 NDAA measure is slated to be considered by the full Senate in the coming weeks. Senate floor action on the FY 2017 NDAA legislation will provide Blumenthal along with Durbin another opportunity to push this and possibly other proposals to unnecessarily restrict consumer access to supplements. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 Key House Panel Directs USDA to Consider Funding Multivitamins for WIC key House Panel directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture s (USDA) Food Nutrition Services (FNS) to prepare a report assessing the benefits of allowing vitamins to be purchased through the supplemental nutrition program for women infants and children (WIC). Women infants and children utilizing the WIC program deserve equal access to and should be allowed to purchase vitamins said Daniel Fabricant CEO and executive director of the NPA A (Natural Products Association). The committee s instructions are a step in the right direction towards addressing the crisis of undernourishment in America. Vitamins are proven to have many health benefits especially relevant to those the WIC program intends to help. Health benefits include aiding in the prevention of classic nutrient deficiency diseases (scurvy pellagra and iron deficiency anemia) improving appetite and growth rates in low-income children preventing neural tube birth defects protecting against heart disease and stroke and building bone mass in the young. NPA also sent a letter to the chairman and ranking member of the House Committee on Appropriations expressing its strong view that the WIC program should be expanded to include the purchase of multivitamins and multiminerals. The article Assessment of Total Choline Intakes in the United States by Taylor C. Wallace PhD CFS FACN and Victor L. Fulgoni III PhD from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition analyzed the usual intakes of choline and compares them with the dietary reference intakes for U.S. residents aged 2 years. Choline can be found naturally in foods including eggs liver beef salmon shrimp cauliflower spinach Brussels sprouts and breast milk. Symptoms of a choline deficiency may include low energy levels memory loss cognitive decline muscle aches nerve damage and mood changes or disorders. The National Cancer Institute method was used to assess usual C intakes of choline from foods according to data for participants in the 2009-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES n 16 809). The results showed that suboptimal intakes of choline are prevalent across many lifestage subpopulations in the United States. Only 10.8 0.6 percent of 2009-2012 NHANES participants aged 2 years (15.6 0.8 percent of males and 6.1 0.6 percent of females) achieved the adequate intake (AI) for choline. Children aged 2-3 years were the most likely to exceed the AI (62.9 3.1 percent) followed by children aged 4-8 years (45.4 1.6 percent) and children aged 9-13 years (9.0 1.0 percent) compared to adolescents aged 14-18 years (1.8 0.4%) and adults aged 19 years (6.6 0.5 percent). When comparing by age and gender males consumed significantly more choline than females for all age groups. These data indicate that there is a need to increase awareness among health professionals and consumers regarding potential suboptimal intakes of choline in the United States as well as the critical role that choline plays in health maintenance throughout the lifespan. Food scientists and the food and dietary supplement industries should consider working collectively with government agencies to discuss strategies to help offset the percentage of the population that does not meet the adequate intake. Revision of the dietary reference intakes for choline should include replacement of the adequate intake with an estimated average requirement and a recommended dietary allowance so that more accurate population estimates of inadequate intakes may be calculated. Less Body Fat for Toddlers Taking Vitamin D healthy intake of vitamin D in the first year of life appears to set children up to have more muscle mass and less body fat as toddlers according to a new study published in the journal Pediatric Obesity. The findings emerged from research initially aimed at confirming the importance of vitamin D for bone density. The additional benefit in terms of body composition came as a surprise for the research team. We were very intrigued by the higher lean mass the possibility that vitamin D can help infants to not only grow healthy skeletons but also healthy amounts of muscle and less fat said Hope Weiler one of the study s authors and director of the Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit at McGill University. For the first time a connection was made between the benefits of achieving healthy vitamin D status during a baby s first 12 to 36 months and how muscle mass develops. The researchers achieved this by following up on a 2013 study in which 132 infants in Montr al QC Canada were given a vitamin D3 supplement A at one of four different dosages between the ages of 1 and 12 months. The new study confirmed the importance for the development of strong bones of a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU day during a baby s first year. This amount is in line with current Canadian health guidelines. The researchers found that higher doses did not provide any additional benefit--at least not in terms of bone development. But the body scans used to assess bone density also allowed the team to measure the children s muscle and fat mass. While there were no significant differences in body composition across the different dosage groups the researchers found children who had vitamin D stores above the threshold recommended by the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) averaged around 450 grams less body fat at 3 years of age. Vitamin D supplementation is routinely recommended for babies until they can get an adequate amount through their diet. The skin synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight making supplementation all the more important where long winters reduce the opportunity for this to happen. In addition Health Canada advises parents and caregivers to avoid direct sunlight and avoid use of sun block creams in young infants. Further analysis also indicated a correlation between lean muscle mass and the average level of vitamin D in the body over the first three years of a child s life. The only other factor found to make a significant difference to the children s amount of body fat was their level of physical activity. For more information visit www.mcgill.ca. Here s why American consumers need enzyme supplements more than ever. By Lisa Schofield ou are what you digest and absorb is a more precise saying than you are what you eat. And the former may be further clarified as You are what your enzymes are. To put it simply enzymes are life asserted Michael Schwartz founder and president of Michael s Naturopathic Programs of Texas. Our bodies use enzymes in a multitude of daily functions both those we produce ourselves and those we must ingest. We need enzymes to maintain the integrity of cells blood muscles bones and tissue. The immune system and organs depend on a healthy daily supply of enzymes--in fact every part of your body absolutely requires enzymes. According to Raf Avila director of research & development for Nature s Plus in New York recent statistics show that approximately 60 million Americans live with diagnosed digestive disorders and Y another 40 million may have undiagnosed digestive problems equating to about one-third of the population as having digestive difficulties. No nutrients no vitamins no minerals and no antioxidants can be absorbed or utilized by the human body unless they are digested and absorbed first he stated. This also means that supplements too can be rendered less effective or ineffective due to poor digestion. In nature explained Udo Erasmus author and educator for Washingtonbased Flora all animals (except humans and pets) eat their foods fresh whole raw and organic--all which contain abundant enzymes. When we eat such foods the enzymes that they naturally contain can perform anywhere up to 90 percent of the self-digestion (breakdown of foods into essential building blocks for body construction and function) of that food consumed. Human digestive and immune systems complete that break- down with enzymes produced by our cells and digestive glands. However in modern living because we cook and process our foods enzymes in that food are destroyed which places pressure on the body to manufacture more enzymes and work harder to completely digest what s eaten. Our bodies were not made to have to do this Erasmus emphasized. Due to continued consumption of processed enzyme-deficient foods digestion may be impaired leading to incomplete and inefficient digestion thus creating bouts of bloating gut pain food sensitivities or allergies and perhaps even autoimmune conditions. There are two solutions according to Erasmus 1) don t cook food or eat processed packaged products or 2) take enzyme supplements. Problem solved he declared. Enzymes are super-fast acting. Some of them catalyze breaking a million or more bonds every second. In MAY 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2014 22 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 five minutes a single gram of such an enzyme can break down a huge number of food molecules. How huge 10 septillion--which is a 1 followed by 25 zeros. Neil E. Levin CCN DANLA nutrition education manager for NOW Foods in Illinois explained that digestion is a complex process. It first begins with actually smelling the food which notifies the brain what is coming. Chewing food slowly allows extra time to prepare digestion of the detected substances and adds the enzyme amylase responsible for digestion of sugars and carbohydrates (starches and fiber). Next the stomach responds to the arrival of liquefied food and beverage by secreting pepsin and hydrochloric acid (HCl) to extract nutrients and start the multi-step process of protein digestion. After an hour or two the contents of the stomach empty into the small intestine which responds by secreting pancreatic enzymes to complete the digestive process and bile from the gall bladder to help retrieve fat-soluble nutrients to the liver. Levin added that if your customer eats a reasonably healthy meal and still has excessive gas bloating loss of energy acidity or other uncomfortable symptoms he or she is certainly a great candidate to try digestive enzyme supplements. The ability to breakdown food into its basic and useful components is of critical concern for consumers interested in functional nutrition for growth development and supporting healthy aging agreed Dr. John Deaton vice president of technology for Deerland Enzymes in Georgia. lations such as Acid Relief with Enzymes that contains chewable calcium carbonate as a natural acid buffer combined with a blend of nine enzymes to digest a broad range of food components including protein fat and several types of carbohydrates. This formula also stacks several types of protease enzymes to allow protein digestion in a wider range of pH than that of a single source he said. We have also seen a shift towards people seeking raw food diets and therefore also the demand for raw enzymes. Jarvis added that Garden of Life has higher-potency enzymes to meet the demands of the American diet. Also with its clean tablet technology Garden of Life has removed commonly used excipients from enzyme tablets such as Wobenzym N she said. According to Jeffrey Brams senior vice president at Garden of Life the company has produced the first-ever certified USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) organic and Non-GMO (genetically modified organism) Project verified certified vegan enzyme called Dr. Formulated Organic Digest. Overall said Levin formulas have expanded over the years from simple plant and animal enzymes in simplistic formulas (such as HCl-pepsin bromelain and papaya) to much more complex crafted assemblages of wider arrays of enzymes. We also have additional targeted digestive support such as Gluten Digest (with DPP-IV) and Dairy Digest Complete to help digest a typical serving of whole milk including the lactose (milk sugar) he noted. More recently Levin added NOW Foods has innovated with enzyme formuJUNE 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM tified organic and non-GMO foods we must strive to set the same high standards for our digestive enzyme products he opined. Chewable enzymes were also possible due to the company s clean non-GMO ingredients with no excipients and the technology to make a clean chewable enzyme. Traditionally chewable papain has only been available from GMO sources--we had to build a supply chain for non-GMO papain he related. Deaton observed that the industry is investing more than ever in enzymebased products for digestive health based on the significant increase Deerland Enzymes has been seeing in the number of new products it s been developing with its customers (many of them new to enzymes). In fact he reported digestive enzymes are projected to be among the best-selling dietary supplements through 2016 with a projected growth rate of 6.3 percent (Sloan Trends). Within this Deaton detailed many of the company s customers have begun to focus on developing products for consumers with gluten sensitivity. An enzyme-based supplement taken with meals can assist the body in breaking down the proteins that can cause immune responses such as gluten proteins. He explained that research shows the fastest way to break down gluten is to cleave its peptide bonds internally and externally so the scientists at Deerland Enzymes have developed Glutalytic that contains both endo- and exopeptidases to break down gluten proteins faster and more efficiently than traditional DPPIV-only supplements. By attacking the gluten protein in two ways gliadin the major immune eliciting protein fraction in gluten can be degraded down from gram to milligram quantities by the time it reaches the small intestine he said. Glutalytic also has the unique ability to break down competing proteins that may also be present in a gluten-containing meal such as milk nuts fish and soy. Dairylytic also from Deerland Enzymes is a dual-functioning enzyme blend containing lactase and a unique protease enzyme blend developed for superior protein and sugar degradation according to Deaton. Dairylytic is formulated to break down the lactose associated with intolerance as well as enable easier digestion and absorption of milk proteins whey and casein. It reduces digestive discomfort associated with consumption of protein supplements which is caused when protein is not completely broken down. According to Avila one of the greatest improvements in digestive enzymes has been the new technologies that allow production via fermentation without allergens such as milk and wheat. This has allowed the creation of dietary supplements with microbiologically produced enzymes that are more active and more robust than animal derived enzymes he said. For example he offered microbially-produced lipase is much more active than pancreatinderived lipase and it survives the human stomach whereas the latter does not. Nature s Plus Source of Life Gold As many natural health retailers may know loyal customers who invest in self care are aware of the benefits of adding digestive enzymes to their routines. In the Pharmaca stores located in Colorado New Mexico California and Washington Don L. Summerfield cofounder and vice president of integrative medicine asserted that Pharmaca customers have a good understanding of the benefits of digestive and proteolytic enzymes. Digestive health and pain care are very popular health care categories. Many of our customers may have had digestive or proteolytic enzymes recommended to them by their health care providers or our staff practitioners. However he advised without proper staff education many customers may not know the correct therapeutic dosage or usage to obtain optimal results from digestive or proteolytic enzymes. And there s more to enzymes than digestive issues. Enzymes are typically recommended for various digestive health issues such as poor ability to digest dairy gluten fats beans and high fiber veggies or high protein diets he said. But proteolytic systemic enzyme formulas like Wobenzym N are recommend for inflammation joint mobility and flexibility. Still it doesn t hurt for staff to ask supplement consumers about their digestion--rarely will they give an Oh no problems there type of response. Depending upon how candid your customer may be you may hear that he or she experiences gas and bloating or is already aware of a problem digesting certain food groups. When asked most people will acknowledge that they experience discomfort after eating a meal Brams emphasized. We are big believers of teaching people how to eat a natural clean organic and nonGMO diet comprised of real foods along with adding quality probiotics prebiotic fiber and digestive enzymes also made from real food he said. When people tell Erasmus they have digestion issues he said he directs them to ensure they ingest enough fiber from plant-based whole foods and to also consume a digestive-enzyme blend and a probiotics blend--all of which are plentiful in any natural health store and can add multiple sales. Erasmus asserted that enzyme sales can massively increase when retailers convey their benefits and value to customers. However there is still some misinformation he pointed out. Some detractors say that enzymes are destroyed in the stomach Erasmus noted. No worry. In the time they have after we mix them in our food until they finally get inactivated by stomach acid enzymes can accomplish a great deal of digestion. Some enzyme experts suggest that enzymes actually survive digestion and continue to act throughout our digestive tract and that enzyme detractors may actually be wrong in their opinion. Clearly more research could clarify the truth. Of particular importance pointed out Deaton is apprising customers about the way enzyme efficacy is measured. Unlike conventional supplements that are measured by weight enzymes are measured by their activity and often in varying units. You can do this with eye-catching signage and of course staff interaction. It s important for consumers to know that for enzyme based supplements more milligrams don t necessarily equal increased potency he clarified. And although taking the proper enzymes will make consumers feel an improved sense of digestion Levin said he also believes that consumers will absolutely benefit by learning how to properly chew and digest their food and to eat natural foods. Many people don t pay attention to how quickly they devour a meal or even a snack but in this fastpaced world swift eating has become a norm and can certainly impair healthy digestion by not allowing enzymes to be released in proper amounts. Beyond that we typically suggest that they start with simpler formulas of plant-based vegetarian-friendly enzymes he said. One reason for this is that there is some evidence that supplementing the animal-derived enzymes can reduce our own production of these enzymes because of feedback mechanisms reporting adequate amounts present from the supplement. According to Jennifer Bradley Weinhardt BS MS research and development specialist at Bluebonnet Nutrition Corporation in Texas Multivitamin and mineral formulas are a staple in the dietary supplement industry. It is no surprise that in 2014 138.9 million adults took a vitamin mineral supplement and 67 percent of these took a multivitamin according to the 2014 Gallup Study of the U.S. Market for Vitamins & Other Dietary Supplements. Marci Clow MS RDN senior nutritionist at Rainbow Light in California agreed. My opinion is that many people who fall into the Baby Boomer or Generation X (Gen X) customer group are looking for products that could T support maintaining their health and are willing to continue to invest in vitamins and multis as insurance. Potential for Growth Rainbow Light expects that the market for vitamins and multivitamins will continue to grow. Clow pointed to data from Nutrition Business Journal (2015) that showed the vitamin category up by 5 percent mineral sales up by 4.8 percent and 39 billion total in consumer sales across the supplement category in 2015. Additionally sales are forecasted to grow at 5.8 percent per year through 2020 she reported. One of the top trends for 2016 is that people are looking for clean and more natural products along with transparent business and environmental practices Clow noted. This has greatly impacted the market as there are many mainstream shoppers who are crossing over to the natural products industry to find brands that are on pulse with this trend. Rafael Avila director of research and development at New York-based Nature s Plus stated that the trend toward certified organic is leading the way. For a couple of years consumers were lured in by the low cost and natural sounding appeal of non-GMO (genetically modified organism) products. Indeed it is essential to avoid genetically modified ingredients but consumers have become aware that non-GMO does not mean natural. Avila also noted that consumers are now turning to certified organic and the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) organic logo on their supplements as a true indicator of the product s quality. Weinhardt added that clean label initiatives are one of the biggest contributors in the industry today with the primary focus for clean label including natural or naturally sourced free of artificial colors flavors and sweeteners organic certified allergen-free vegetarian vegan kosher certified and MAY 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2014 30 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 whole food-based. This may suggest their interest in taking a more natural or holistic approach to managing their health before relying on drugs she added. Delivery System Options When it comes to choosing a delivery system for vitamins and multivitamins consumers have a multitude of choices. In addition to common pill forms such as capsules tablets and gelcaps the market is flooded with other delivery system choices such as gummies powders chewables softchews and drinks. Lifestyle seems to have a lot to do with a consumer s preferred delivery system. Natrol understands the onthe-go lifestyle and has answered the need with our fast-dissolve technology that allows the consumer to take their supplement anywhere anytime with no water needed said Baron. This appeals to consumers who don t always have water on hand are not a fan of swallowing pills or want something tasty on their tongue. Nature s Plus is a leader in liquid supplements and Avila points out that this form has many benefits. They are delicious and easy to swallow since there are no pills involved he stated and because all the nutrients are already dissolved in liquid there s no worry that insufficient digestion is inhibiting your body from absorbing all of the nutritional benefits from a supplement. With the over-60 age group population increasing exponentially the demand for liquid whole food multivitamin products is skyrocketing. And its not just liquids that are appealing to Boomers. You d probably be surprised to know that the main consumer of gummies is someone over 55 years old Clow shared. In fact the sales of adult gummies have surpassed those for children. Clow pointed to National Marketing Institute (NMI) data that still listed tablets and capsules as the preferred JUNE 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM choice for all demographics combined. With supplement use in millennials on the rise that statistic could change. Millennials appear to indicate that pills tablets capsules are for old people and prefer to take their supplements via other deliver forms such as liquids drinks mints gels and gummies. Retailer Shannan Daetwiler owner of Simply Nutrition in Lincoln PA added that while pill formulations such as softgels and capsules tend to be preferred if a chewable is available in the particular vitamin supplement a consumer is looking to purchase there is a tendency to go with that option. Retailer Tim Hitt supplement manager with Fiesta Nutrition Center in Monroe LA agreed. Liquids and sublinguals are wildly popular in the B12 and D categories he said. People are also reaching for vitamins and multis as a much earlier age to support a more natural healthy aging process. Clow noted that according to a 2013 NMI report supplement use amongst Millennials grew from 50 percent in 2009 to 68 percent in 2013. Similarly 70 percent of Gen Xers used supplements in 2013 while only 55 percent reported using them in 2009. Archambault agreed. Millenials are in general more open to alternative health care and are more willing to educate themselves about these types of products he stated. There s no doubt today s customer is more educated said retailer Hitt. The majority of them know what they are basically looking for but need some fine tuning from an educated staff. Liposomes are described as an innovative delivery system that allows for a much higher nutrient absorption rate. As they pass through the digestive system they are protected from the harsh conditions due to their encapsulation allowing the nutrients to be absorbed directly to the bloodstream. At Rainbow Light Clow said the company recently introduced three multivitamin gummy formulations--one for men one for women and one for teens. The age and gender specific nutrient formulations focus on energizing B vitamins to promote natural energy production mental focus and maintain a healthy stress response she shared. The gummies come in convenient grab-and-go packets. Bluebonnet launched Super Earth SingleDaily Multiple in both iron and iron-free formulas. Unlike ordinary multiples explained Weinhardt whole food based multiples like Bluebonnet s Super Earth SingleDaily Multiple provides a cornucopia of plant super foods with all the essential vitamins minerals and nutrients necessary for complete and VITAMIN RETAILER 31 The Customer Base In addition to bridging the nutritional gaps in our diets Weinhardt explained that different life stages are a driver for consumers seeking out more of a certain micronutrient. Women continue to dominate the category as they tend to invest more proactively in their health and take a variety of supplements to meet a range of needs said Baron. They are also the primary shopper for their households and are therefore a key decision maker in the products their family uses. However recent research suggests more men are shopping within the category. The growing elderly population is a key consumer group for dietary supplements and vitamins stated Derek J. Archambault director of marketing at FoodScience Corporation of Vermont. The percent of supplement use in Boomers increased from 69 percent in 2009 to 75 percent in 2013 and in Matures the increase went from 75-83 percent added Clow. This group of consumers uses dietary supplements and vitamins for preventative and chronic diseases to delay aging and for support of overall well-being Archambault said. VITAMINS AND MULTIVITAMINS Innovative Formulations and Clean Labels on the Rise balanced nutrition. In May Natrol launched a new skin hair and nails supplement including lutein and biotin. New clinical research has found that the daily intake of 10 mg of lutein will improve skin hydration and elasticity revealed Baron adding that biotin supports healthy hair and strong nails. To fully round out the quality and value of this product she continued vitamins A C D B12 B6 copper and zinc alphalipoic acid and horsetail have been added to help improve overall health of skin hair and nails. Sales Suggestions The vitamins and multivitamins category can be confusing for consumers and marketing can be challenging because retailers are limited to what they can say about products. According to Clow some of the challenges can be eliminated by using merchandising displays with samples and education collateral as well as demos and sampling store-level education programs and promotional support. Labels designed to accurately describe product benefits can also help the consumer with the decisionmaking process she added. Shari Allen vice president of sales at Nature s Plus noted that retailers need to call attention to the shelf and to the particular item they want to feature. She suggested taking a current product of interest in the general market such as magnesium and deciding what brand will be featured. Use a large quantity to convey that this is a best seller and high volume item and signage like shelf talkers danglers overhead mobile and customized information she explained. Excitement sells. But more important than the mer32 VITAMIN RETAILER chandising and promotional material is the expertise of the sales representatives in the field. They can assess the challenges of each individual retailer and arrange for customized merchandising solutions and conduct instore demos and educational training for customers Allen suggested. Clow added that with both positive and negative studies regularly emerging in the media even the savviest consumer may have trouble knowing what to believe. While a retailer may feel enthusiastic about a particular supplement it is essential to remember when selling supplements eagerness must be limited to what you can say under the law she noted. The verbal interface at the point of sale is an important exchange because it helps guide consumers to the supplement products that are well suited for their individual needs. It is essential that discussions of these products is accurate and legal. For more information she suggested that retailers view Roadmap for Retailers on the Council for Responsible Nutrition s website. One of the keys to becoming a true retail partner is building strong relationships according to Weinhardt. As a family-run business our strength is that we understand what many of our health food store partners are going through since we often experience similar challenges. Shared principals passion mission and loyalty between us and our retails partners is a big part of our success. But it s our customercentric culture--placing the specialty retailer s business needs front and center--which has allowed our business to not only grow but flourish. What is the Retailer s Role in Supporting Consumers Demanding Gluten-free Products According to Markets and Markets research the global gluten-free products market is projected to reach 7.59 billion USD by 2020 at a CAGR of 10.4 percent from 2015 to 2020. Essentially sales have not abated in a category that was often described as a fad instead it has become a trend with one of the main reasons for this being attributed to the Americans fascination with what s new and what s novel. As a responsive retailer it stands to reason that you need to have a least a small percentage of your product mix be something that s up to date and up to the minute. However gluten free has now hung in with continued double-digit growth year after year. Novel is not enough to explain the fascination with the diet and the growth in sales. Recent research from Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) suggests that consumers really feel the WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 gluten-free diet is better for them and the influence of family friends and the media have been critical to the diet s longevity. Myths or Facts Is Gluten Sensitivity Real There is very little known about non-celiac gluten sensitivity ( gluten sensitivity ). At this point in time most experts in gluten-related disorders do believe it is a real condition. However there may be experts with differing opinions. We don t have a disease definition yet for gluten sensitivity so right now it is what we call a diagnosis of exclusion. A diagnosis of gluten sensitivity is given when people experience similar symptoms as those with celiac disease when eating gluten but who test negative for celiac disease and wheat allergy. These individuals then undergo an elimination diet under the supervision of an expert health care team to determine if gluten is at the root of their symptoms. People with celiac disease develop auto-antibodies to gluten and experience damage to their intestines. People with gluten sensitivity experience neither of these celiac disease markers however their symptoms can be quite debilitating and affect quality of life Do You Gain Weight Eating Gluten-containing Foods If you do not have celiaic disease or a gluten sensitivity gluten is not harmful to your health and is not making you gain weight. Since so many foods now come in gluten-free versions it s easy to think that they are a better alternative--which would be wrong. Gluten is found in many whole-grain foods that have an array of vitamins minerals and fiber and are vital to a healthy diet. Research has shown that people who eat three servings of whole grains a day are 30 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The right mix of healthy carbohydrates like whole-grain products is the best way to control your blood sugar and avoid diabetes--plus fiber rich foods help to keep you full throughout the day. Whole grains are also the vehicle for many of nature s disease fighters like phytochemicals. So when you re cutting out gluten for no real reason you re losing many of the nutritional benefits found in foods with gluten. Do Gluten-free Foods Help You Lose Weight Weight loss comes from balanced healthy diets--gluten free or not. When you re trying to lose weight the key is to make conscious choices about eating whole real foods. If you need to go gluten free consult your doctor or a nutritionist to determine the best eating plan for your lifestyle but in general select more fruits vegetables lean meat and more naturally gluten-free grains like brown rice or quinoa. Are Gluten-free Foods Better For Your Health Gluten-free foods aren t better for your health. Don t be fooled--gluten free doesn t automatically mean low calorie or healthy. In fact glutenfree foods are full of extra calories and sugars to make up for taste and texture when alternative products are swapped. They also tend to have less fiber than their gluten-containing counterparts. Nutrition legislation has not caught up with this category and fortification is not always evident in gluten-free foods. Unless people are careful a gluten-free diet can lack essential nutrients since a lot of the gluten-free products tend to be low in B vitamins calcium iron zinc and magnesium. An important source of carbohydrates it s also portable and compact which helps to explain why it has played an integral part of the human diet. Bread also plays essential roles in religious rituals. For instance many Christians who receive communion are given wafers that are made out of wheat flour and water. Jews traditional- I B Y J A N E T P O V E R O M O ly use challah on the Sabbath and holidays. According to MyJewishLearning.org challah is made in various shapes and sizes depending on the holiday. But what exactly are green super foods what contribution are they supposed to make to human health and do they have any real science to back them up These are the questions I will attempt to answer in this article. G nutraceuticals such as fruit powders herbs micronutrients enzymes and pre- and probiotics. While clearly not green super foods these other nutraceuticals may or may not provide benefits depending upon the forms and amounts of each present in the product. What are They Supposed to do Generally people use powdered green super food drink mixes with the expectation that it is going to provide them with one or more of the following benefits Compensate for a lack of vegetables leafy green vegetables in their diet Support and or promote some aspect of the body s detoxification process Add an alkalizing component to their diet to help prevent disease And or promote some other aspect of human health. What are They There are a plethora of powdered green super food drink mixes available. Most of these drink mixes contain dozens of nutraceuticals including green super foods. For the purposes of this discussion green super foods will be defined as algae (chlorella spirulina etc.) grasses (alfalfa barley grass wheat grass etc.) common green vegetables (broccoli spinach etc.) and sprouted versions of grass and green vegetables. Powdered green super food drink mixes may also contain other 58 VITAMIN RETAILER Compensating for a lack of vegetables The U.S. Department of Agriculture has indicated that Americans are getting about 40 percent less of the recommended servings of vegetables 1 and specifically 60 percent less of the recommended servings as green vegetables.2 3 But is it realistic to expect that supplementing with a green super food drink mix will truly compensate for a lack of sufficient vegetable intake The answer is not exactly but there are still benefit to be had. While it is not a substitute for eating vegetables the green super food drink mix may be able to provide some of the antioxidant power of vegetables and provide the other contributions to health. For example a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine4 found that 1 g day of wheat grass powder significantly Reduced blood malondialdehyde (marker of oxidative stress) Increased total antioxidant status WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 Increased vitamin C levels Increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) Likewise research published in other scientific journals5 6 demonstrated that 5-10 g day of broccoli sprouts significantly Reduced blood malondialdehyde Increased HDL cholesterol Reduced oxidized LDL cholesterol Reduced oxidative stress index Increased total antioxidant capacity Another study from the Journal of Medicinal Food 7 found that 2 g day of spirulina significantly Reduced blood glucose levels Reduced triglyceride levels Reduced apolipoprotein B levels foods unpublished research demonstrated that 3 g day of a proprietary blend of broccoli Daikon radish and red radish spouted seed concentrates significantly Increased paraoxonase 1 a detoxification enzyme 9 Increased quinone reductase a detoxification enzyme.10 Another study11 found that 100 ml day of wheat grass juice promoted the detoxification bisphenol A (BPA) in young women. Other health benefits In addition to those previously listed specific green super foods have been shown to have other health benefits in human research (See figure 1). Conclusion and Words of Advice Green super food drink mixes may not always provide the expected benefits for which they are being used but research does suggest that they have distinct benefits to offer nonetheless. That assumes of course the product provides clinically relevant doses of the key green super foods. Unfortunately the formulation philosophy for many green super food drink mixes seems to be everything but the kitchen sink. While I have nothing against the inclusion of a broad spectrum of nutraceuticals the actual amount of each green super food is not identified in the supplement facts box of many super food drink mixes. Rather it is frequently included as part of a proprietary blend--and it is the proprietary blend that is given a milligram gram amount. The problem with this is that it is impossible to know if there is a relevant dose of any of the green super foods in the product. One way around this is to use products that specifically identify the exact amount of each green super food it provides. VR For a full list of references visit www.vitaminretailer.com. Supporting detoxification Approximately 3.97 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are disposed of or otherwise released to the environment annually 8 which supports a statement made by Rachel Carson in her 1962 groundbreaking book Silent Spring For the first time in the history of the world every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals from the moment of conception until death. The good news is that the body was designed to process and excrete many toxins. The bad news is our bodies may not always be equipped to handle the volume of modern environmental pollutants and toxic substances. However there are quite a number of nutraceuticals that can help support and promote the detoxification process. With regard to green super Figure 1. Alkalizing the diet The concept that eating a diet that produces a more acidic pH systemically (i.e. emphasis on meat and dairy) is conducive to promoting a disease state while eating a diet that produces a more alkaline or base pH (i.e. emphasis on vegetables and fruit) is more likely to help prevent disease is fairly well-known. This has led to attempts to alkalize the diet with the consumption of specific dietary supplement and even alkaline water. While the value of this supplemental approach to alkalizing the diet had probably been overstated not to mention lacking in research to support it there is a least one study I have seen showing a benefit. A small study12 was conducted on 3 g day of pH 7.5 a proprietary blend of vegetables vegetable sprouts grain sprouts and a few other nutraceuticals. The results were that all participants responded to treatment with an increase in alkaline pH in the morning after the first dose. (Continued on page 65) VITAMIN RETAILER 61 HEALTHANDNUTRITION Basic Nutritional Advice Combatting Chronic Fatigue By Mark Becker ustomers who seek advice for a chronic lack of energy often confront retailers. Something as simple as eating a healthy diet and supplementing with the very best nutrition can help you manage many health challenges and that includes the persistent fatigue and mental strain of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). I know it doesn t sound sexy. But it couldn t be truer. CFS is characterized by severe disabling fatigue as well as other symptoms including musculoskeletal pain sleep disturbance impaired concentration and headaches. This is not a new disorder. Back in the 19th century symptoms surfaced in many people but were largely ignored. In the 1930s through the 1950s outbreaks of the disease marked by prolonged fatigue were reported in the United States and many other countries. Beginning in the earlyto mid-1980s there was renewed interest by health professionals worldwide because of increased reports of out- C breaks of long-term debilitating fatigue. And for good reason. Between one and four million people in the United States--about 2.5 percent of the population--have chronic fatigue symptoms. Interestingly often your health care professional has difficulty diagnosing CFS because they first have to rule out other possible maladies including sleep disorder anemia or depression. That said according to the Mayo Clinic you must also have four of the following symptoms Fatigue Loss of memory or concentration Sore throat Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits Unexplained muscle pain Pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness Headache of a new type pattern or severity Un-refreshing sleep Extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise Effects from this illness can range from moderate to debilitating and can substantially impact everyday functioning. Routine daily activities such as cooking walking and even lifting light objects can become difficult. Additionally sensitivity to environmental factors including noise light and various household chemicals may force many with CFS into isolation. The onset of chronic fatigue may be sudden and occur immediately after a viral illness such as the flu. However it can also be gradual with no distinct association to a specific event or time. The economic burden of CFS including annual health care costs is estimated to be between 1.9 billion and 7.2 billion. Retailers can truly lend a hand. What CFS Feels Like CFS differ between patients but severe fatigue or chronic tiredness that interWWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 62 VITAMIN RETAILER feres with work or daily activities is common. Patients may also complain of pain and achiness and a kind of brain fog that makes it hard to concentrate or remember recent events or details. If you ve been exhausted for months can t carry out your daily activities and nothing you have tried makes you feel better it s time to see a doctor. Studies suggest that close to 80 percent of people who are living with chronic fatigue syndrome have never been formally diagnosed and are not getting the treatment they need. Data also implies that getting a diagnosis early in the course of the disease--before you ve had it for two years--gives you the best chance of improving your symptoms through treatment. Believe it or not the best advice retailers can give their customers who may have CFS symptoms is the age old adage of avoiding processed refined carbohydrates such as the sugar or white flour found in white bread crackers cookies cakes and soda. Sugar will wreak havoc on the body. It suppresses the immune system increases inflammation and stimulates yeast overgrowth in the intestines. It also causes a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by hypoglycemia which causes fatigue anxiety and sugar cravings. This creates a vicious cycle. In fact according to FoodBeast.com in 2012 the average American consumed 130 pounds of sugar per year. That is three pounds of sugar per day or 3 550 pounds of sugar over the average American lifetime. That equates to 1 767 900 Skittles. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 9.5 teaspoons of sugar per day. The average American adult consumes 22 teaspoons per day. The average American child consumes 32 teaspoons per day. The most alarming fact is that according to brain scans sugar is as addictive as cocaine. Many believe sugar alone is the main contributor to CFS. That said retailers shelves are full of vitamins minerals amino acids and other supplements that are not only good for overall nutrition but can also have powerful nutritional impact on people with CFS. Many of the following are best used synergistically to help improve energy levels and overall health. Amino Acids Glycine taurine carnitine tyrosine and others are essential for the production of energy in the body. They are also essential for brain function. JUNE 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM The most alarming fact is that according to brain scans sugar is as addictive as cocaine. Many believe sugar alone is the main contributor to CFS. D-Ribose This compound is needed to increase the synthesis of cellular energy in muscles. Muscle energy synthesis has been found to be lower in those with CFS. When taken as a supplement D-ribose has been shown to enhance muscle cell energy and recovery improve fatigue and other symptoms in individuals with fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome in several studies. In fact one group of researchers found that 3 grams of Dribose twice daily for three weeks in adults over 50 years of age who complained of tiredness for at least one month lessened physical fatigue. This was demonstrated by statistically significant improvements in tests of cardiopulmonary exercise testing. The subjects also had significant subjective improvements in mental outlook and vitality. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) The presence of good bacteria in the intestinal tract is vital for improving digestive health central to overall health. Inositol Enhances immune function by increasing natural killer cells and increasing arterial blood flow. Magnesium Nutritionists believe that many CFS sufferers can significantly improve their symptoms by supplementing with magnesium. This is because magnesium has the ability to increase the body s production of DHEA a hormone that has beneficial effects on memory stress sleep and depression. It also enhances immune function by increasing natural killer cells. Furthermore magnesium is critical for the relief of muscle pain. Vitamin E Helps to relieve pain in CFS patients. It can also improve leg cramps at night which interfere with sleep. Selenium Supports immune function by enhancing antibody production. CFS is a very complex and often mysterious condition. The unrelenting symptoms of fatigue pain and mental fogginess can be overwhelming. Retailers can partner with their customers in formulating a plan to combat CFS. Eating a healthy diet and supplementing with the very best nutrition specifically for CFS can help your customers navigate the many health challenges associated with this condition. The objective is to find a combination in your customers diet and supplement regimen that will help boost their energy or help that person get a good night s sleep. This will ultimately give your customer critical control over the outcome of their illness and set him or her on the road to recovery. VITAMIN RETAILER 63 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray Uterine Fibroids B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND U terine fibroids are bundles of smooth muscle and connective tissue that can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit. Although they are sometimes called tumors fibroids are not cancerous. However because they disrupt the blood vessels and glands in the uterus they can cause bleeding and loss of other fluids. Perhaps 30 percent of women over age 30 have at least one fibroid. Further hysterectomies due to fibroids are the most common indication for major surgery in women. The overwhelming majority of uterine fibroids are without symptoms but they can produce vague feelings of discomfort pressure congestion bloating and heaviness and can also produce pain during intercourse increased urinary frequency backache abdominal enlargement and abnormal bleeding. What Causes Uterine Fibroids Increases in local estrogen (specifically estradiol) concentrations within the 64 VITAMIN RETAILER fibroid itself are thought to play a role in the cause and growth. Concentrations of estrogen receptors in fibroid tissue are higher than in the surrounding tissue. In addition to an excess of estrogen production within the body a strong case can be made that the role of the most significant environmental factor assaulting female hormonal health--compounds known as xenoestrogens. These compounds are also known in the scientific community by the names endocrine or hormone disrupters and environmental estrogens hormonally active agents estrogenic substances estrogenic xenobiotics and bioactive chemicals. Examples of xenoestrogens phthalates (plastics) pesticides tobacco smoke byproducts and various solvents. Xenoestrogens enhance or block the effects of estrogen in the body by binding to estrogen receptors. They also promote a shift from healthy estrogen breakdown products to cancer causing estrogen metabolites. What Dietary Recommendations are Important in Battling Uterine Fibroids The most important dietary recommendations are to eat a high fiber diet rich in phytoestrogens while avoiding saturated fat sugar and caffeine. These simple changes can dramatically reduce circulating estrogen levels and reduce estrogen s influence on the fibroid. One study looked at what happened when women switched from the standard American diet (40 percent of calories from fat only 12 grams of fiber daily) to healthier diet (25 percent of calories from fat 40 grams of fiber). Results showed a 36 percent reduction in blood estrogen levels within eight to ten weeks. Phytoestrogens or plant estrogens are able to bind to the same cell receptors as the estrogen your body produces. That s a good thing because when phytoestrogens occupy the parking places estrogen can t produce effects on cells. By competing with estrogen phytoestrogen WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JUNE 2016 causes a drop in estrogen effects and are thus sometimes called anti-estrogens. Great sources of phytoestrogens include soy and soy foods ground flaxseeds as well as nuts and seeds. What are the Supplement Strategies for Reducing Fibroids Reducing the size of uterine fibroids as well as the symptoms with natural medicines are easily accomplished goals in most cases unless the fibroids are particularly large. Unfortunately this statement is supported more on clinical experiences of naturopathic physicians such as myself rather than on scientific evidence. Though the approach is scientifically rationale i.e. if uterine fibroids are caused by an excess of estrogen produced in the body as well as the effects of xenoestrogens it makes sense that reducing estrogenic influences should shrink uterine fibroids. Here are the key supplement recommendations 1. Build a strong foundation. There are three products that I think are critical for women with uterine fibroids a highpotency multiple vitamin and mineral formula powdered drink mixes containing highly concentrated greens like chlorella spirulina wheat grass juice barley grass juice etc. and a high quality fish oil supplement providing 1 000 to 3 000 mg EPA DHA. 2. Take 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds daily. Flaxseeds are the richest source of plant lignans compounds that exert significant benefit in dampening the effects of free estrogen on the fibroid. 3. Nutritional and herbal compounds designed to reduce toxic effects of estrogen and xenoestrogens. There are a number of compounds that have been shown to be beneficial in helping to detoxify and eliminate excess estrogens including Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite di-indoylmethane (DIM) are anti-cancer phytonutrients derived from cabbage family (cruciferous) vegetables. Research has shown that these compounds help to breakdown cancer-causing estrogens to non-toxic forms. Dosage take either I3C (300 to 600 mg) or DIM (100 to 200 mg) daily taken with food. Calcium D-glucarate--prevents the reabsorption of excreted estrogens. Dosage 200 to 400 mg daily. Green tea polyphenols--block the negative effects of estrogen and have been shown to be protective against estrogen-related cancers. Dosage 300 mg green tea polyphenols daily. 4. Black cohosh extract. The most widely used and the only thoroughly studied natural approach to menopause is the special extract of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) standardized for 27-deoxyacteine. The standard dose of black cohosh is based upon the delivery of 1-2 mg of this compound twice daily. In addition to clinical studies showing black cohosh extract is a safe natural alternative in relieving menopausal symptoms it has also been shown to be useful in relieving uterine fibroids. Final Comments When I was in private medical practice I had several patients who improved dramatically by following the general dietary and nutritional supplement guidelines described above. For example one patient Ruth a 41-year-old woman had a fibroid the size of a softball that led to dysfunctional uterine bleeding and many other symptoms that were so bad she was scheduled for a hysterectomy. Since she could not get in to have the surgery for three months her friend suggested that she see me. After following my program for three months all of her symptoms disappeared and the fibroid shrank to the size of an egg making it possible for her to cancel her scheduled hysterectomy. Plus since breast cancer and many other cancers are associated with an increased estrogenic effect I know Ruth set herself up for a healthier longer life. VR Michael T. Here she discusses Regular Girl a new product and new way of assisting individual retailers with distribution. Question What is Regular Girl Answer A first of its kind Regular Girl is a synbiotic blend of prebiotic Sunfiber and functional probiotics developed specifically for women by a woman dietitian and nutritionist. It delivers true regularity (firming or loosening) without excess gas bloating or cramping. Available in convenient on-the-go stick packs and scoopable powder Regular Girl mixes easily into most any cold food and beverages without affecting taste color aroma or texture. cussed what I loved about Sunfiber but the packaging was bulky not easy to sample or share amongst friends (or patients) and felt a little too clinical. My private practice is mostly female. Let s face it due to hormones (and maybe stress) women have more bowel issues than men. Fact. We also are pretty comfortable talking about our poop and or health with our friends ... so why not create a great product that makes talking about going to the bathroom fun The probiotic was added to help with immune function and as a catalyst to ensure that the prebiotic fibers would receive the maximum benefit due to its proper utilization in the gut. Why is Regular Girl important for those on a gluten-free diet People who have celiac disease are gluten sensitive intolerant and or are avoiding gluten do not have many high fiber options available to them. It is recommended that we consume more than 25 grams of fiber per day but doing it through fruits and veggies alone is simply not enough. Our gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a muscle which needs to be worked out regularly. Regular Girl is a great way to work your GI tract from the inside out sales structure for retailers. Would you please explain how it works We call it social retailing. To participate in this social retailing program all you need is a mailing list an e-newsletter and or a social media presence such as a Facebook page. Really there s nothing you will need to do to set up your social retailing program. Regular Girl does it all for you including creating a customized readyto-use e-commerce web page with your logo. You ll even get ongoing fun relevant content to educate your customers about digestive health and related issues that tactfully include Regular Girl s benefits with a link connecting them to buy from your store. You ll receive commissions on every Regular Girl order including all sales that result from customers who share your link with their friends. Regular Girl is already receiving about 70 percent reorders since its introduction a few months ago. And the best news is that the price is the same everywhere within the network. There is no incentive for customers to comparison shop. Any news on Regular Girl Do you have plans to expand the brand Yes products for men and kids are in the works.
