LUDWIG HEIMRATH one of the most famous names in Canadian auto racing Heimrath (above no. 39)won the Canadian sports Car racing Championship (later known as the Canadian driving Championship) in 1961 which was the first year the title was awarded and in 1964. He was second in 1962 1963 and 1965. He was the first Canadian to drive in Formula 1 when he was entered by Porsche in Pau France in 1962. He won the sCCa trans am championship in 1977. He was an expert long-distance racer and teamed up with such champions as Johnny rutherford and Craig Hill in entering the sebring 12 Hours and the 24 Hours of daytona. He was a UsaC indyCar competitor in 19681969 and raced in the Canadian and Continental Formula-a division in 1970. Heimrath raced touring cars until 2000 before retiring at the age of 66. EPPIE WIETZES Eppie Wietzes (above)began racing in the late 1950s and in the 1960s he established himself as a versatile and capable driver on the Canadian racing scene. a two-time Canadian driving Champion Wietzes won in everything he drove from a sunbeam alpine to Comstock mustangs and Gt-40s trans am Corvettes and a flock of very quick Formula 5000 cars. He won back-to-back Canadian Championships in 1969 and 1970. in 1981 Wietzes took his Garretson Enterprises Chevrolet Corvette to two wins and the trans am title. Wietzes would prove to be the last driver for over 15 years to win the trans-am title in a Corvette. that year he also secured a drive in a lola t600 Chevrolet prototype for the mosport 6 Hours with Brian redman for Cooke-Woods racing and came second. Wietzes remains 49th in the all-time trans am earnings list and is equal in the alltime winners list with Peter revson and actor Paul newman. Wietzes competed in the first Formula 1 Grand Prix at mosport driving a lotus entered by Comstock and again in 1974 in a Brabham entered by team Canada F1 racing. Because of his long and varied career Wietzes was one of the first inductees into the Canadian motorsport Hall of Fame when it opened in 1993. BILL BRACK Bill Brack (above)is the only driver to win three Canadian driving Championships and he did it in consecutive years 1973-1975. to accomplish that he had to beat future Grand Prix champions future indy 500 winners and a young up-andcomer named Gilles Villeneuve. in his outstanding career Bill also won a north american Formula atlantic Championship and the Canadian touring Car Championship. He also drove in three Canadian Formula 1 races in 1968 in 1970 at le Circuit mont-tremblant for team lotus and 1971 at mosport for Brm. However it is his long association with the Porsche brand that has been the foundation of Heimrath s 40-plus-year career. Quickly outgrowing his original VW Bug ride Heimrath progressed to a Porsche super 90 and then found a home behind the wheel of a Porsche rs60. the 1961 Canadian sports Car Championship resulted from that combination as Heimrath outraced soon-to-be Formula 1 driver Peter ryan and the outrageously powerful V-8-engined Comstock sadlers. that success earned Heimrath the opportunity to race a Porsche Formula 1 car in Europe but a dispute arose within the team hierarchy and the Grand Prix experience proved to be a one-off. Heimrath enjoyed continued success in the rs60 and his record showcases another Canadian title in 1964 at the wheel of the Comstock racing V-8 Cooper dubbed the King Cobra with runner-up championship results in 1962 1963 and 1965. despite his winning ways one of his most memorable moments aboard the rs60 came not from a victory but when he had a wild rollover 8 i VaraC.Ca Heimrath (right) in the pits at the 1966 Player s 200 at mosport. officials. differences in regulation interpretations eventually took the championship chase to the Fia office in France where much to the chagrin of the sCCa Heimrath was declared the trans am champion. By 1981 Heimrath had taken a slight step back and was competing with his son ludwig Jr. in a Porsche 924 turbo. He continued to make regular appearances on-track in a 944 before ending his career in 2000 in a Porsche 968. a highlight of Heimrath s racing career came on his home track of CtmP when he was asked to co-drive the Kremer racing Porsche 956 in the Bud 1000 World Endurance Championship event. although credited with a fourth place result Heimrath still insists that the score keepers erred in the lap count and the Kremer team should have been rewarded with a podium finish. i know we finished in third but no one will admit it. one of Heimrath s other major accomplishments came when he along with partner david deacon approached the Porsche factory with the idea of running a single-make series. the concept ultimately resulted in the formation of the rothmans Porsche turbo Cup in Canada and the creation of similar divisions throughout the world. Heimrath still maintains a presence around the track offering technical advice and driver coaching to racers. Unsure of his race victory totals Heimrath recently described his trophy room as Filled from floor-to-ceiling on three walls the accepted number of awards previously reported to be in excess of 483 trophies. Whatever the number ludwig Heimrath is the definition of a Canadian racing legend and a very appropriate member of the Canadian racing fraternity to be named the 2016 Canadian Historic Grand Prix Grand marshall. Formula Vee racing began in 1959 when Hubert l. Confirmed entries with two weeks remaining until the event have already reached 25 cars with more late arrivals expected as the date approaches. i won t be surprised to see pack racing with about ten cars in a row all dicing for the lead said Brigido. What will be interesting to watch will be the two 2015 series champions Phil Wang (millers oils F1200) and matt Garwood (Challenge Cup) racing for bragging rights. those two won t have it easy. there are a lot of very talented and experienced drivers both young and old who will be doing their best to dethrone these two champions. the CHGP event at Canadian tire motorsport Park will be the second stop on the millers oils Championship calendar while these will be the season opening races for the Challenge Cup. the Challenge Cup will complete their schedule south of the border with appearances slated for the mid-ohio sports Car Course in lexington oH thompson motorsports Park in thompson Ct Pittsburgh motorsports Complex in Wampum Pa and Watkins Glen international in Watkins Glen nY. and cannot do to your car there s nothing more frustrating than having a keen new member show up with a car that s just not oK to race. You will save time and money by asking the right questions before you do unnecessary work. don t forget there are many VaraC members ready to help you People with a similar car to yours mGB alfa romeo Porsche etc. are happy to share setup tips and where to get spare parts. of course the more cars we can get out on the track the happier we are and if we can get you out on the track you will be happy too so to summarize here are the basic steps to take. First get a membership and then join the VaraC chat group and start asking questions. Find out about getting a race licence. next decide on what car you want to race. Check the VaraC classified ads for cars. it s less expensive to have a car that s strictly for the track than to try to race a street legal car. one question sometimes asked is is it really racing the answer is most definitely yes if you are at the wheel of your 1962 mGB going into turn 8 at CtmP and there s another B going for the same corner believe me it s racing. However contact is very much frowned upon so there will be no fender rubbing or you will get a visit from the appropriate authorities. if you don t have the vintage attitude you will find yourself putting the car back on the trailer and being sent home. if you do have the right attitude you will meet a super bunch of people and have a ball racing with fellow enthusiasts. if this piques your interest my suggestion is to check out our website at varac.ca. You will find lots of information on how to join race cars for sale how to get a race licence and a list of contacts to get in touch with.
