Sitting at my desk to write this column I ve noticed my single-serve snack is wrapped in plastic and I used a plastic spoon to eat my soup--both forms of plastic that are not recyclable in my town. So much for my ecofriendly practices. Researching plastic waste on the internet reveals horrifying statistics. For example according to Ecowatch.com we re drowning in the stuff. Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the Earth four times While I ve been concerned with environmental issues over the years to a limited degree mostly by making donations to local environmental groups I ve not been fully educated about plastic s impact on the environment but recently the topic has been pushed front and center. For this month s Back Talk article (see page 72) I interviewed Jose Minski CEO of Wellnext Rainbow Light s parent company. Minski who has a passion for philanthropy discussed The Path to EcoGuard an initiative to raise awareness of plastics and their effects on ocean health. This will be our third year supporting ocean research conducted by the 5 Gyres Institute a nonprofit leading the effort on researching plastic pollution in the oceans and waterways he said. 5 Gyres and others are reporting that in less than nine years there will be one ton of plastic for every three tons of ocean fish unless we work now to create change. We ve launched a Path to EcoGuard microsite to provide free sourcing I and operational information on our EcoGuard 100 percent recycled bottles to help other companies evaluate sustainable packaging options. The amount of trash that Singer has produced over the past three years can fit inside of a 16-oz. mason jar In the article Singer offers a lot of suggestions for retailers and their customers on achieving a more waste- and plastic-free lifestyle. Both Singer and Minski make positive role models for change that can be (somewhat) easily embraced. As Frances Moore Lappe wrote in her book Eco Mind ... intentionally frightening people with images of environmental collapse might trigger short-term behavior change but as in the psychology of dieting a lot of people lurch from discipline to indulgence. Sustained change comes when we start to live differently from deep positive emotions. So while information about environmental damage is quite daunting we are assured that the changes we make can have quite an impact. I am determined to do better. The report found that most Americans are getting enough water each day. The article Americans Getting Adequate Water Daily CDC Finds also noted that not all of the consumed fluid comes in the form of plain water. Approximately 30 percent of men s intake came from plain water and about 34 percent for women. Now a University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing (Penn Nursing) team including senior author Terri Lipman PhD CRNP FAAN the Miriam Stirl Endowed Term Professor of Nutrition Professor of Nursing of Children and Assistant Dean for Community Engagement has examined the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and diabetes control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The results demonstrate the high prevalence of patients with low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D specifically in D healthy weight and Caucasian children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes-- patients previously considered at no or low risk of having low levels of vitamin D. These data underscore the importance of vitamin D screening in all children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The team s findings have been published in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. To our knowledge this is the first study that has been adequately-pow- ered to examine the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and HbA1c (a measure of diabetes control) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes said Lipman and colleagues. These data suggest the need for monitoring of vitamin D in all youth with this disorder. The study included approximately 200 children and adolescents from the Diabetes Center for Children at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia who were recruited during regular follow up visits. Chronic Drinking Interferes With Absorption of Critical Vitamins by Pancreas hronic exposure to alcohol interferes with the pancreas ability to absorb vitamin C potentially predisposing the body to pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases a new study in the American Journal of Physiology--Cell Physiology reported. The pancreas produces the enzymes used to digest food and the hormones such as insulin that are needed to store energy from food. Pancreatic diseases and damage to the pancreas can lead to digestive problems malnutrition and diabetes. Alcohol-related pancreatitis takes an average of 10 years of daily alcohol abuse to develop and the risk of developing the condition increases with the amount of alcohol consumed said Fred Gorelick MD of Yale University and a collaborator of the study s authors. Earlier studies support that prolonged alcohol exposure weakens the pancreas defense system making it more vulnerable to injury. However less than 10 percent of alcoholics develop pancreatitis indicating that alcohol is a sensitizer but other genetic and environmental factors are also involved. While long- C term continual alcohol intake is a significant factor in developing pancreatitis little is known about how daily consumption patterns affect the likelihood of developing the disease Gorelick said. To function properly pancreatic cells require a number of vitamins which they take from the blood stream. The research team at the University of California Irvine led by Hamid Said PhD investigated whether the pancreas weakened defense from alcohol exposure could be attributed to poor absorption of vitamins. The researchers reported in earlier studies that chronic alcohol exposure prevented the pancreatic cells from absorbing biotin and thiamin. In this new study the team investigated whether alcohol exposure also interfered with the pancreas s absorption of vitamin C. The research team first identified the protein called sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter 2 (SVCT-2) as the main protein responsible for transporting vitamin C into pancreatic cells. Next researchers exposed mouse pancreatic cells to alcohol levels similar to the blood alcohol concentration of chronic alcoholics. The researchers also fed mice a diet in which alcohol made up 25 percent of the total calories consumed. They found that both pancreatic cells directly exposed to alcohol and pancreatic cells from alcohol-fed mice had lower numbers of SVCT-2 blocking the cells absorption of vitamin C. Reducing the levels of vitamin C and other essential micronutrients will interfere with normal cellular activities in the pancreas Said explained. This may sensitize the pancreas to a secondary insult predisposing it to the development of pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases. There is a lot of debate and even scholarly study on this topic. Does leadership mean simply the one who makes decisions The person who tells others what to do Or does it mean the act of being a leader of setting direction and inspiring others to follow the way Or does it mean embodying qualities of a leader in every setting whether a person is in charge or not In my opinion leadership can mean all those things and more. Some people call me a leader and point to the new supplements and concepts I ve introduced to the health food industry as shaping its direction. However I never set out to be a leader. I set out to follow my passion and beliefs and I was fortunate enough to learn some things about leadership along the way. I would like to examine leadership with regard to your business but the truth of the matter is that leadership L qualities are never isolated to one area of your life. They become a part of the way you interact with the world. I don t know very many people who manage to be kind fair and reasonable as a leader at work and then become a tyrant at home or vice versa. Leadership is an activity and there are steps you can learn but it is also a set of personality characteristics. Four areas I d like to explore include vision integrity communication and empathy though this list is not by any means a full example of all the many components that make up leadership. Vision It may seem self-evident that a leader needs to know where he or she is going but that is easier said than done. In my experience many people spend more thought on what they have for breakfast than setting their personal and professional goals for the coming day week year. Sometimes we are so caught up in the busy-ness of business that we forget to stop and think about where we want to go. Do you want to expand your store Add a smoothie bar Increase your sales Add new items Go back to school Experiment with social media Stop for a moment and think about where you want to be. You don t need to know how you are going to get there but you do need to have an idea of your destination. Once you decide on two or three goals write them down and display them where you can see them every day. When aircrafts take off for a new destination they are only truly on course about 5 percent of the time. The rest of the journey entails frequent course corrections. The same may be true of your destination (goals). There may be many course corrections along the way but as long as you keep your destination in clear sight you will eventually get there. And if you know where you want to go you will be surprised at how many people will help you along the way--including your WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM JULY 2016 24 VITAMIN RETAILER RETAILFUNDAMENTALS associates at work. If the leader has a clear vision of where he or she wants to go others will follow and help the journey along. If the leader is lost then others will wander in all directions and the ability to harness a collective force of many like-minded people to achieve your ultimate goal will be lost as well. Communication You cannot be an effective leader if you cannot communicate your destination and message to your followers. One common problem I see is that a leader has such a clear idea of what they want and where they want to go they assume everyone else must see it clearly too. This is not always the case. Often a person is a leader because they can see further than others. They see that distant goal when others do not. Do not expect others to read your mind. Do not make assumptions. Tell people where you want to go outline it clearly and then most importantly tell them why. You may be thinking Because I m the boss that s why But I have learned from years of experience in both stores and as a dietary supplement manufacturer that you will achieve your goals faster and more predictably if the people you work with understand why those goals are important. You want your associates to be as excited and engaged as you are. You want them to see the big picture. Maybe your goal is to sell 10 bottles of XYZ today. You could tell your folks that you want them to sell the product and get moving. Or you could explain that XYZ is the best new product you have seen in a long time and explain how it can make a difference in people s lives. You can explain that life-changing products are what keep customers coming back to the store and telling all their family and friends. You could even share that by doing the right thing--helping their customers--they are also helping the store and their own livelihood. Integrity To me integrity means doing the right thing even when it is hard and keeping your word. For example in my company there have been times when I could have made much bigger profits by using cheaper raw materials or skipping certain quality assurance tests. The consumer will never find out so what s the harm right Wrong. That is a slippery slope to justifying all kinds of dishonesty. And though it may take a while it comes back to you in the end. Neither I nor my company would have a good reputation today had I started down that road and I doubt I would still be in business. I know I wouldn t have been able to live with myself if some cheap shortcut had harmed anyone. I decided a long time ago that selling products is not what I do. My passion is to improve health. I want people to see what an amazing difference quality supplements can make in their lives. I love the goosebump moments when a customer tells me I have helped their son or sister or friend and changed their lives. I imagine this is true for most of you too. Yes you want to sell products--we all need to keep the lights on. But why aren t you selling car batteries or tires or electronics I bet it is because you care passionately about natural health from the foods we eat to the supplements we take. Your business is to improve the health and safety of every person who walks through your door. Who knows the product you recommend could even save a life. I can t imagine a higher calling than helping people safeguard their health. When you reframe your thoughts and focus on integrity decisions become simpler. Do I bring in a product that I know does not work but could be profitable That becomes easier to answer. When you truly help people you will be successful. When you do the right thing the profits will follow. I have seen this time and again. Dental Health The Australian Dental Journal5 published a study comparing the antiinflammatory effects of topically applied curcumin to those of chlorhexidine and chlorhexidine-metronidazole (germicidal gels) on experimental gingivitis in 60 subjects. The subjects were placed into three groups chlorhexidine varnish 2 percent placebo varnish and curcumin. After four weeks both chlorhexidine and curcumin of treatment resulted in a significant reduction in gingival bleeding (P 0.05). Psoriasis BioMed Research International7 published a 12-week randomized doubleblind placebo-controlled clinical trial that assessed the effectiveness of a topical steroid and bioavailable oral curcumin (Meriva 2 g day) or the steroid alone and in 63 patients with mild-tomoderate psoriasis. While results showed that both groups achieved a significant reduction in psoriasis severity the reduction was greater in patients treated with both topical steroids and oral curcumin. Moreover a serum marker of inflammation (IL-22) was significantly reduced in patients treated with oral curcumin. The constituents of the curcumin used were bisdemethoxycurcumin 29 mg demethoxycurcumin 62.7 mg and curcumin 964 with total curcuminoids 1 060 mg per tablet. At 24 and 48 hours post-exercise curcumin supplementation resulted in moderate to large reductions in pain during single-leg squat gluteal stretch and squat jump as well as small reductions in creatine kinase activity. A small increase in single-leg jump performance was associated with the pain reduction. The Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) estimates that an incredible 71 percent of all crop species grown for human consumption depend on bees and other pollinators. Our lives are interwoven with these useful tiny fragile productive creatures. Bees are the only insects in the world that make food--honey-- that humans can eat. In addition to their enormous importance in our food chain bees also produce a variety of substances that are used as natural medicines. Four of the best known are honey (also used as a B food) propolis bee pollen and royal jelly. Honey Honey has been used medicinally for millennia and it is the most clinically studied of the bee products with more than 8 000 journal articles archived on the electronic database of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) available at PubMed.gov. Perhaps the best-known form of medicinal honey is manuka honey. While all honey possesses some antibacterial properties manuka honey has unique factors that may dramatically boost its ability to kill bacteria. Results from clinical trials showed quite convincingly that in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus berberine (500 mg two to three times daily) along with lifestyle intervention lowered the level of fasting blood sugar levels after-meal blood sugar levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) more than lifestyle intervention alone or placebo. When berberine was com- pared to oral hypoglycemic drugs used in type 2 diabetes like metformin glipizide and rosiglitazone there was no statistical significance between treatment of berberine and these drugs. In other words the clinical results seen with berberine are on par with the drugs but with no significant side effects. In one double-blind study of 116 patients with type 2 diabetes berberine at a dosage of 500 mg twice a day lowered fasting blood sugar from just above the range of being classified as diabetes (i.e. 126 mg dL) to normal blood sugar levels (less than 100 mg dL) in most subjects. The same sort of comparative results seen in type 2 diabetes were found in the treatment of elevated blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) and high blood pressure. Studies also supported that berberine combined with conventional drugs in these conditions is safe and can produce better results than the drugs used alone. Side effects with berberine occurred at much lower rates and were milder than prescription drugs. Side effects were seen mainly at higher dosages (e.g. 500 mg three times a day) and included such as nausea diarrhea constipation abdominal distension and abdominal pain. In regard to its effects on blood lipids not only does it lower total and LDL cholesterol unlike statins berberine also lowers blood triglycerides and raises beneficial HDL cholesterol. Berberine has also been shown to lower apolipoprotein B by 13-15 percent which is a very important risk factor to reduce. It addition to enhancing AMPk berberine works by inhibiting an enzyme called PCSK9 leading to more LDL being removed from the bloodstream. The typical dosage for berberine in these studies was also 500 mg two to three times daily. The researchers conducting the metaanalysis concluded that berberine has comparable therapeutic effect on type 2 diabetes elevated blood lipids and hypertension with no serious side effect or toxicity. Furthermore the review indicated that berberine combined with conventional drugs in these conditions is safe and can produce better results than the drugs alone. Berberine has also been examined as a weight-loss aid in two double-blind clinical trials. In a study conducted in 2012 published in Phytomedicine 500 mg of berberine three times per day caused an average of 5 pounds of weight loss over a 12-week period.
