Many food packages in the state have been labeled often in tiny print with the words may contain genetically engineered ingredients or something to that effect. Meanwhile shenanigans have been taking place in Washington D.C. and I m not referring to the presidential race. I ve been following the most recent updates on the GMO label bill. On July 6 members of the Organic Consumers Association threw money-- 2 000 it s been reported--from the Senate gallery onto the floor to protest a procedural vote to advance the GMO label compromise a revised version of the failed DARK Act in the Senate. In June Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee announced that she had reached an agreement with Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) the committee s chairman on the GMO bill. She called the legislation a win for families farmers and food producers and said it would establish a national mandatory system of disclosure for food that contains GMO ingredients. The agreement would require the agriculture secretary to create within two years a national mandatory disclosure standard for food that contains GMOs. Backers of the bill said it would close loopholes created by the Vermont labeling law that allowed processed food products like frozen dinners or entrees that contain meat and GMO ingredients to go unlabeled. But opponents said the Senate bill gives the food industry too much leeway in deciding how consumers should be informed. And there lies the real shenanigans The bill allows producers to put a telephone A number for consumers to dial or a QR (quick response) code that can be scanned with a smartphone on product labels to find out if the product contains GMO s-- because who doesn t scan QR codes or call manufacturers for product information when they are shopping at the grocery store Karen Howard CEO and executive director Organic & Natural Health Association said the bill redefines what constitutes genetically engineered omitting large classes of GMO products including oils sugars and starches with the potential to exempt virtually all GMO foods from coverage. Second she noted it does not mandate labeling of GMOs across all 50 states. The manufacturer is provided with three choices none of which requires words declaring something is genetically engineered. In addition The bill fails to address what was once the biggest objection Big Food had to Vermont s mandatory labeling law the belief new labeling criteria will drastically increase the cost of food for consumers she said. The primary goal of this bill remains nullification of Vermont s existing labeling statute and superseding each state s right to enact GMO labeling laws. Are GMOs the biggest threat to our health and food supply I doubt it. Will people stop buying a favorite product that they ve been purchasing because of a Vermont-style GMO disclosure I m not sure. However people have a right to know what is in the food they eat. Proponents of the technology say GMOs and other science-based innovations are safe and bring benefits to the farm the store and the table. If so then why not label these products proudly and clearly The Senate is moving quickly on the bill and it will likely be on its way back to the House by the time this magazine goes to press. But in its present form it s very weak indeed--this is a bill that needs more work. B Y S HARI B ARBANEL Just E veryone has issues with focusing and concentrating from time to time. From college students studying for exams to Baby Boomers being proactive about their mental wellness consumers at every stage in their lives are looking for ways to not only stay sharp mentally but to be able to focus and concentrate. According to Yannick Capelle product manager for Ohio-based Frutarom health focus and concentration has become increasingly essential for a broader market--it concerns all the population kids students workers and the elderly. A growing number of children and adults have concentration and attention difficulties and they seek natural alternatives that will help them to focus on their work and studies Capelle said. Cognitive decline occurs in individuals as they age and also in response to stress and other factors so the market is very large and encompasses many age groups agreed Bruce Abedon PhD vice president of scientific affairs for NutraGenesis LLC in Vermont. The number of Americans reaching retirement age is increasing as Baby Boomers have begun entering this stage of their lives. Chronic stress asso6 Nutrition Industry Executive ciated with modern lifestyles can also result in difficulty focusing and remembering things at all ages. These combined factors have led to a rise in demand among consumers for dietary supplements positioned to help support focus and concentration. Stressed Out & Unable to Concentrate Everyone deals with stress at some point in their lives but according to The American Institute of Stress 44 percent of Americans feel more stressed than they did five years ago. Further experiencing chronic stress can have a major effect on cognitive functions such as the ability to focus and concentrate. Memory is a crucial aspect of overall cognitive health--Boomers especially find this to be an important indication of mental wellness said S bastien Bornet vice president of global sales and marketing at New Jersey-based Horphag Research the exclusive worldwide supplier of Pycnogenol. Stress confusion and loss of memory all contribute to a decline in mental function. Thinking is a very important part of our lives. But there are many situations where we wish we could think better or stay more concentrated and focused be it at work during an exam or at home Capelle said. The maintenance of cognitive function even in stressful situations has become increasingly essential in our societies based on performance and changing social trends. However it is not always easy to manage the different challenges of our daily lives. More and more people perceive an increasing level of stress. To deal with that it s been noted that some young people are resorting to drastic and illegal measures. In a study published in the Journal of American College Health researchers found that 34 percent (of more than 1 800 undergrads surveyed) admitted to illegal use of ADHD medication to help them focus while studying. Extreme options aside many consumers are looking toward the natural sector to aid their ability to concentrate. Consumers are becoming more educated about how natural ingredients can help them with cognitive function so it s important to provide consumers with information and scientific evidence showing an ingredient s benefits for brain health explained Bornet. Focus and concentration are key concerns in the cognitive health category especially for young professionals looking to be www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 Go to www.niemagazine.com alkemistlabs for info about this advertiser ConditionSpecific productive in the workplace. Pycnogenol is a super-antioxidant that has been found safe and effective to support brain function throughout life among a wide variety of beneficial health properties. In fact research shows that Pycnogenol has a positive effect on focus and concentration. One study conducted in 2015 showed the ingredient s ability to enhance decisionmaking and focus in Baby Boomers. This included improvement in overall decision-making attention span memory ability to deal with other people and ability to manage finances. Another study published in 2014 found that Pycnogenol was shown to help improve overall cognitive function in the work place including mental performance sustained attention and mood. nerve cell function such as neurotransmission of specialized chemicals signal propagation and more. PS potency for improving cognitive activity has been extensively researched. Through clinical data obtained by Enzymotec and others PS has been shown to be beneficial for cognitive functions such as concentration focus learning memory and to significantly improve cognitive ability in elderly with memory complaints Afergan continued. Enzymotec offers Soy-PS which is available in non-GMO (genetically modified organism) (IP) grade as well as non-IP grade. It is also available in an eco-friendly phosphatidylserine sourced from sunflower lecithin (EnzyPS Green). PS has been proven to be effective in consumption of 100 mg day according to the company. For people of all ages cognitive health is often top of mind. Supplementing the diet with PS is known to affect a large number of cognitive functions among them memory learning and attention therefore it is beneficial for almost all age groups-- adults that want to keep their brains healthy and strong to work at top capacity. Students that are striving to succeed in competitive settings may use PS to improve cognitive performance and academic achievements and seniors are looking for ways to delay or reduce age-related loss of cognitive abilities said Afergan. differing test groups. Significant improvements in focus and concentration were found in all three trials when measured on both a subjective basis as well as when validated objective cognitive function tests were performed. Mindful Ingredients Frutarom s Capelle noted that ingredients such as polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids have long been associated with memory and concentration. In addition B vitamins folate and antioxidants including vitamin C and E are suggested to be supportive in preventing cognitive decline. Several botanical extracts such as green tea gingko and ginseng have shown promising results on learning and concentration he explained. According to Dr. Eyal Afergan vice president global sales bioactive ingredients for Enzymotec in Israel lipids and especially phospholipids are vital for proper structure and function of brain cellular membranes. And one of the most important phospholipids is phosphatidylserine (PS). PS is one of the body s major building blocks. It is a natural nutrient found in the cell membrane and particularly abundant in the brain he explained. PS has a crucial contribution to the structure and function of the nerve cells and as suggested by its high abundance in the brain has a crucial role in the maintenance of 8 Nutrition Industry Executive Studies have shown that ashwagandha (Withania somifera) may help people stay focused for longer periods of time. Sensoril is NutraGenesis branded ashwagandha extract that has been used since 2002 to help promote focus and concentration with tremendous feedback from consumers on its superiority in this area according to Abedon. Sensoril is a multi-patented selfaffirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) full spectrum nutraceutical containing the highest levels of ashwagandha bioactives in the industry (standardized to 10 percent glycowithanolides) he said. In recent years three human clinical trials have been conducted that have demonstrated clinical evidence of Sensoril s advanced cognitive benefits in Frutarom s Neuravena is a botanical extract prepared from a proprietary variety of green oat herb. Clinical studies have shown its positive effect in improving concentration and cognitive performance in stressful situations according to the company. Oats have always had the reputation as health food and have historically been used in its various forms and extracts for its physical and psychological fortifying properties Capelle explained. Monographs report mental and cognitive support including mild anti-depressant effects reduced anxiety and an increased ability to deal with stress. Neuravena was the first oat extract to substantiate this benefit with clinical studies. Being able to focus and concentrate on the task at hand--no matter how big or small--is vital part of what make us independent creatures. The inability to focus on even the simplest task can cause a major red flag. And consumers are now understanding that being proactive about their health may help them lessen or avoid a potential issue. The focus and concentration category is thriving today and will only keep growing as the number of Americans continues to age and reach retirement age concluded Abedon and also as life s various stressors and other challenges continue to heighten stress levels for adults at younger ages. The online product registry will include full label information for dietary supplements and be accessible via the web. The agreement between CRN and UL calls for the registry to go into an immediate development stage with beta testing to occur this summer and is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. According to CRN President and CEO Steve Mister We spoke with a number of very capable companies for this important project but UL best fit the bill because of its broad knowledge of the supplement industry its technical prowess and its brand recognition for consumer safety. We are confident that the dietary supplement product registry will provide a viable adaptable product registry that will serve regulators retailers manufacturers and ultimately consumers over time Mister added. Mike O Hara general manager for UL s Global Nutraceuticals division expressed appreciation for the opportunity to help the dietary supplement industry gain traction in its renewed quest for improving accountability for its products. We know the industry and we understand the sensitivities complexities and determination involved in developing the right product registry that will allow for a core product accompanied by customization. We take our responsibility here very seriously and look forward to working with CRN its members and any company that wants to bring the industry to a higher level of accountability for its customers. Over the next few months about a half dozen companies--ranging from small companies with only a few products to large companies with potentially hundreds of labels--will input their labels to a beta version of the database and provide feedback on the process and suggestions for improvements. CRN member companies will be required as a condition of membership to input all their product labels into the product registry by July 2017 and all dietary supplement companies will be strongly encouraged to do the same. Brad Pace acting director of the FDA Compliance Office s Division of Nonprescription Drugs and Health Fraud presented best manufacturing and labeling practices to AAHP members and other industry leaders on May 24 2016. During the webinar Pace communicated that homeopathic products are legally marketed in the United States when they contain active ingredients that are prepared homeopathically and labeled properly. He noted homeopathic T products are no exception to the agency s concern with over-the-counter drugs in any class that are marketed inappropriately for serious conditions. At AAHP we strive to provide our members with educational resources and tools for complying with changing regulations and ultimately for manufacturing their products with the utmost excellence said Mark Land AAHP president. Our recent collaboration with the U.S. FDA is just one way that the association is providing such critical information. AAHP s 2016 webinar series kicked off in March with a session on new and expanded labeling guidelines published in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS)--the federally recognized compendium for homeopathic starting ingredients and manufacturing. Moderated by Eric Foxman member of the HPCUS Board of Trustees and Chair of the HPCUS Council on Pharmacy the webinar examined the new guidelines and gave homeopathic manufacturers in attendance tips for optimizing their product labels. C AstaReal Responds to BGG North America Announcement staReal Inc. (Burlington NJ) which sells astaxanthin under the brand name AstaReal has issued a caution to retail manufacturers of their legal obligations to evaluate their astaxanthin label claims based on the facts and their own substantiation reviews. The caution has been issued in response to a news release disseminated in mid-May by BGG North America Inc. and or its affiliated entity Algae Life Sciences Inc. (collectively BGG ) asserting its astaxanthin ingredient AstaZine has attained the landmark achievement of procuring 239 FDA-Allowed Structure Function Claims through the mere act of sending the agency a notification. In fact there are already more than 100 such notifications on file with the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for a variety of structure function claims submitted by dozens of companies marketing astaxan- A thin-containing products to retail consumers. Joe Kuncewitch national sales manager of AstaReal Inc. explained It is our understanding that the FDA does not allow the use of structure function claims merely because a company submitted a notification letter and that the receipt or non receipt of a courtesy letter does not in any manner indicate that a submitted claim has been allowed by the FDA. Kuncewitch added Our experience under the regulatory structure is that the FDA requires that a notification be submitted for each brand name label that will carry the claim such that an ingredient supplier submitting a generalized structure function notification to FDA that does not include the specific brand name is a meaningless act. Pfeiffer and his team at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbr cke Germany showed that the type of sugar used makes a significant difference to the blood glucose management of people with type 2 diabetes. The study results provided new scientific evidence that the favorable metabolic profile of BENEO s Palatinose (isomaltulose) results from the opposite effect it has compared to sucrose on the incretin hormones GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). The benefits of Palatinose observed in direct comparison with sucrose in this study suggest that the hormone (incretin) response plays a key role for the effects in metabolism and health. The human intervention study used a randomized double-blind cross-over design with 10 type-2 diabetics who consumed 50 g Palatinose or sucrose dissolved in water after overnight fast. The results show that Palatinose reduces insulin secretion and lowers T blood glucose fluctuations in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus with Palatinose the blood glucose response was lower (with approximately 20 percent lower peak concentrations) the insulin release was 55 percent lower the GIP release was very low and delayed (overall 40 percent less vs. sucrose) and the GLP-1 secretion was higher and sustained (overall 6.3 fold higher vs. sucrose). As a result of its slower digestion Palatinose bypasses the K-cells in the upper intestine (which produce GIP) and reaches GLP-1 producing L-cells in the lower intestine. These incretin hormones play an important role in blood glucose regulation insulin release and related long-term effects in development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Though our understanding of the full potential of the different hormone (incretin) response of Palatinose in supporting health and preventing disease is still in the early stages this new research again underlines the fact that not all sugars are alike said Anke Sentko vice president regulatory affairs and nutrition communication at BENEO. ALC Sunflowerderived Alpha GPC Delivers Cognitive and Labeling Benefits onnecticut-based American Lecithin Company (ALC) announced the availability of sunflower-derived -glycerophosphocholine (Alpha GPC) as part of the company s Sunflower Series of cleanlabel phospholipids. GMO (genetically modified organism)-free and hypoallergenic it is a more label-friendly alternative to soy. ALC s broad range of phospholipids helps improve the bioavailability and instantization of protein materials by making powdered protein drinks dissolve more easily. Nutritional protein products like caseinates amino acids and whey protein can create challenges to formulators of sports nutrition powders because they can be difficult to disperse. The instantization of whey proteins and other powders can be effectively achieved by using lecithin to improve wetting sinking and dispersability when added to a liquid such as water or milk. However recent consumer and market data doesn t support this assumption. Instead data from the end of 2015 and early 2016 suggests that consumer confidence in herbal dietary supplements continues to increase. This initial data is not conclusive and more time and data are needed to accurately assess the full impact of 2015 on consumer confidence but the initial data is promising for the industry. At AHPA s (American Herbal Product Association) Annual Member Meeting Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) President Maryellen Molyneaux noted that herbs and botanicals are a bright spot in the supplement industry. NMI market research shows 118 million U.S. adults used herbals in the past year up 39 percent since 2011 48 percent of U.S. adults used herbals in 2015 up from 37 percent in 2011 In 2015 41 million U.S. adults used herbals in the past 30 days a 50 percent increase vs. 2011 17 percent of U.S. adults used herbals in the last 30 days in 2015 up from 12 percent 2011 According to NMI data nearly one in three U.S. consumers believe in the importance of herbal supplements for health maintenance. Consumer s perception of the importance of taking an herbal supplement has increased 80 percent since 2011. More consumers also believe that herbal supplements are safe according to NMI data that shows the safety ratings for herbal supplements increased significantly between 2009 and 2015. The percentage of supplement users who indicated that herbal botanical products are very safe grew from 21 percent in 2009 to 26 percent in 2013 and 30 percent in 2015. Data from Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) shows that sales of herbal and botanical supplements was projected to reach 8.1 percent growth in 2015 compared to 2014 s growth rate of 6.8 percent. The herbs and botanicals supplement category has so far shrugged off the negative media attention of 2015 NBJ stated. Recent data from the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) shows that use of herbal and botanical supplements among U.S. adult supplement users grew by Go to www.niemagazine.com somalabs 5 percent in 2015 (31 percent in 2015 compared to 26 percent in 2014). In addition CRN found that 84 percent of Americans express overall confidence in the safety quality and effectiveness of dietary supplements. While this data suggests that consumers trust current industry practices to provide high-quality products and transparency it will not slow the industry s continued efforts to innovate policies procedures and technology to meet growing consumer demand for the highest quality products. AHPA recently began to develop good agricultural and collection practices (GACP) and good manufacturing practice (GMP) for the herbal ingredient supply chain. AHPA is leading an industry consensus process to create these self-regulatory initiatives. The GACP element of this guidance will detail best practices for seed-to-harvest and post-harvest handling operations. The related GMP document will outline best practices for every step from post-harvest handling to the point of receipt of herbal ingredients by finished product manufacturers. AHPA is receiving input from companies directly involved in agriculture and wild crafting of herbal ingredients to provide expertise for development of the GACP guidance and will gather comments from companies that distribute herbal raw materials and manufacture herbal extracts to develop the GMP guidance. Expanding global supply chains for herbal products present new opportunities and challenges for the industry and AHPA s initiatives will help members and the industry identify and meet emerging challenges and capitalize on opportunities. These deficiencies may be involved in patients who experience migraines but that is unclear based on existing studies. Further studies are needed to elucidate whether vitamin supplementation is effective in migraine patients in general and whether patients with mild deficiency are more likely to benefit from supplementation said Suzanne Hagler MD a Headache Medicine fellow in the division of Neurology at Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center and lead author of the study. Hagler and colleagues at Cincinnati Children s conducted the study among patients at the Cincinnati Children s Headache Center. Hagler presented her findings at the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society in San Diego CA. Hagler s study drew from a database that included patients with migraines who according to Headache Center practice had baseline blood levels checked for vitamin D riboflavin coenzyme Q10 and folate all of which were implicated in migraines to some degree by previous and sometimes conflicting studies. Many were put on preventive migraine medications and received vitamin supplementation if levels were low. Because few received vitamins alone the researchers were unable to determine vitamin effectiveness in preventing migraines. She found that girls and young woman were more likely than boys and young men to have coenzyme Q10 deficiencies at baseline. Boys and young men were more likely to have vitamin D deficiency. It was unclear whether there were folate deficiencies. Patients with chronic migraines were more likely to have coenzyme Q10 and riboflavin deficiencies than those with episodic migraines. Previous studies have indicated that certain vitamins and vitamin deficiencies may be important in the migraine process. Studies using vitamins to prevent migraines however have had conflicting success. For more information visit www.cincinnatichildrens.org. Proper Maternal Folate Level May Reduce Child Obesity Risk P roper maternal folate levels during pregnancy may protect children from a future risk of obesity especially those born to obese mothers according to a study led by researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study published online in JAMA Pediatrics was funded by NIH s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Obesity in children and adults is a serious health issue in the U.S. contributing to such conditions as heart disease stroke and type 2 diabetes. During pregnancy maternal obesity also increases the risk for a range of pregnancy complications such as stillbirth birth defects and preterm birth. Furthermore babies born to obese mothers have long-term health risks including a higher risk of obesity in childhood. Folate an essential B vitamin reduces the fetus risk for neural tube defects which are malformations affecting the brain spine and spinal cord. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women of childbearing age take 400 micrograms of folic acid (a synthetic form of folate) daily to reduce their children s risk for neural tube defects. However the role of mater34 Nutrition Industry Executive nal folate levels on a child s future obesity risk was not known especially among those born to mothers who are obese during pregnancy. In their study the researchers investigated the health outcomes of mothers and children (ranging from 2 to 9 years old) in the Boston Birth Cohort a predominately low-income minority population with a high prevalence of maternal and child obesity. The study team analyzed health records from more than 1 500 mother-child pairs including information that was collected before during and after pregnancy. To gauge a mother s folate level during pregnancy the researchers measured folate from stored plasma samples that were collected two to three days after delivery. The study team found a wide range of maternal folate levels but observed an L-shaped relationship between maternal folate levels and child obesity. In other words the lowest levels of folate correlated with the highest risk of child obesity. When folate levels reached approximately 20 nm L which is within the normal range for adults further increases in folate levels did not confer additional benefits indicating a threshold or ceiling effect. According to the researchers this threshold is higher than the standard cutoff for diagnosing folate deficiency (less than 10 nm L). Obese mothers in the study tended to have lower folate levels than normal weight mothers. However when the researchers examined obese mothers only they found that children of obese mothers with adequate folate levels (at least 20 nm L) had a 43 percent lower risk of obesity compared to children of obese mothers with lower folate (less than 20 nm L). The children in the latter group had higher body mass index-forage z-scores (BMI-z)--a measure of body fat in children. According to the authors establishing an optimal rather than minimal folate concentration may be beneficial for women planning a pregnancy especially obese women. Considering three key areas that contribute to movement can help. By Lisa Schofield W e all marvel at performance athletes such as gymnasts even though many of us don t feel the need to be that flexible or powerful. However for millions of Americans with some type of discomfort issue the idea of moving without the limited mobility or discomfort is always top of mind. The skeletal system articular (joint) system and musculature all work together in harmony and to varying degrees. Consumers are becoming savvy wondering if for example a bone-support supplement is enough. Consider that we all perform conscious and subconscious movement the first involves such activities as going to the refrigerator to start making that summer salad the latter involves placing a hand on a refrigerator shelf and drumming on it with fingers while concentrating on what exactly needs to go into that salad. 36 Nutrition Industry Executive And while it may appear at first blush that the latter can t possibly cause any pain for those with any ailment from shoulder bursitis or elbow rheumatoid arthritis or pulled tendons and ligaments that simple act can cause quite the wince. For most people asserted Oliver Wolf global marketing and communication GELITA headquartered in Germany healthy aging is associated with staying active and mobile because once we lose our autonomous ability to run walk or drive in a car we lose our personal freedom. And any consumer may experience issues with muscles soft tissues joints and or bones in any combination at once. We are starting to see a shift in thinking away from the reductive view of health and toward one which is more holistic and understands the body as highly interconnected observed Tim Hammond vice president sales and marketing for Washington-based Bergstrom Nutrition. So instead of focusing on one aspect of health like joint pain or muscle strength consumers now view the ability to remain healthy and active as the end goal and are starting to gravitate toward products that improve well-being and functionality. Indeed Eden Somberg MS LAc director of business development AIDP in California strongly agreed that healthy and active consumers of all ages have created a robust market demand for nutraceutical products that support their lifestyles. She has observed significant changes on retailer shelves that were dominated by simple calcium capsules and fish oil soft gels but have been overtaken by flavorful stick packs effervescent powders chocolate chews and gummy formats with brighter broader consumer appeal great taste and resultwww.niemagazine.com July August 2016 ing brand loyalty. In essence then form supports function. The next challenge is considering how to effectively address--formulate--cohesively for this interrelated condition-specific trio. Typically and sensibly nutraceutical products are formulated to address each issue. This remains a viable formulation option as for example according to Nena Dockery technical services manager for Stratum Nutrition based in Missouri there are distinct needs. Middle-aged women are primarily concerned with maintaining healthy bones and young athletes tend to be primarily interested in maintaining and building strong muscles. Further she observed consumer interest in joint-support products usually emerges following years of wear and tear that noticeably affects movement. Often however consumers don t realize how connected these three areas--bones muscles and joints-- actually are she said. Another reason that products still need to remain a singular condition support is that the amount of active ingredients needed to impart efficacy is usually so large that it is frequently prohibitive for a formulator to develop a combination product that can live up to label claims. Plus there are cost constraints regarding formulating products containing well-researched ingredients. Therefore stated Dockery for the purpose of formulating to support healthy mobility the ideal product may possibly be packaged as a system or pack. But this would require education regarding the advantages of viewing healthy overall movement as the ultimate goal she noted. Max Motyka consultant to Utahbased Albion agreed. Products formulated to support good mobility need to be placed into systems or packs because the effective dosages of ingredients known to help bone joint and muscle support can t normally be placed in a single dosage unit he explained. In addition different ingredient groupings can be targeted at particular mobility problems and so they needed to be in different packs. Some of the ingredients need to be in soft shell capsules in large volume and a variety of other dosage issues. bone support supplements were considered for old people and musclesupport products were the province of bodybuilders. So much has changed and quite rapidly so. Baby Boomers do remain the ultimate audience for bone and joint support supplements--as the concept of being able to remain active and discomfort free is paramount to this age group. For Baby Boomers products that can increase mobility and decrease pain are most important observed Hammond. For Gen-Xers the priority is health maintenance and disease prevention. And Millennials view bone joint and muscle support as a critical part of a broader lifestyle also valuing products that appear more natural and less pharmaceutical he said. Products formulated to support good mobility need to be placed into systems or packs because the effective dosages of ingredients known to help bone joint and muscle support can t normally be placed in a single dosage unit -- Max Motyka Consultant Albion According to Sue Hewlings PhD chief science officer for IgY Nutrition of Oklahoma The prevalence of osteoarthritis increases dramatically with age and is projected to increase at an even greater rate as a result of the disproportionate aging of the population and increased life expectancy. WHO (World Health Organization) states that 25 percent of adults 65 and over suffer from a musculoskeletal condition and OA (osteoarthritis) affects approximately 9 percent of American adults by the age of 60. In addition Aparna Kalidindi PharmD BCPS technical sales and marketing manager for Natreon Inc. in New Jersey pointed out that the growing incidence of obesity sports injuries and consumer awareness has led to a growing market for joint health supplements. The joint health supplements market is predicted to hit 9 billion globally by 2017. When it comes to younger generations Hammond queried The bigger question that looms for the future is what effect the continued rise of obesity rates may have on Gen-Xers and Millennials The younger generations are seeking to push the limits and maximize strength and performance while maintaining healthy weight Somberg observed. This is where industry sees a surge in protein consumption in a wide range of formats--shake mixes bars and beverages. While healthy weight is a functional category that spans all generations structural integrity of the body (of bones joints and muscles) except in unusual cases is correlated directly to age she said. As populations age we want to retain our mobility and strength. The current adult populations are physically active educated and interested in solutions to extend and enrich quality of life. According to Wolf teens and those in their 20s are endeavoring to stay healthy and fit teenagers often turn to sport as a way to gain muscle mass reduce weight or support body toning. Young adults tend to push themselves test their personal limits and set goals. To meet the needs of this target group nutritional choices that enhance the positive effects of resistance training can play a key role he observed. Steve Holtby president and CEO of Soft Gel Technologies Inc. in California is one who also sees younger people more concerned today about maintaining fitness for long-term health. Healthy aging isn t an exclusive concern of just Baby Boomers and older consumers. Millennials are taking a personal interest in their health and are increasingly driving sales in health care categories. To Millennials health is increasingly about living a happier life--they have a more holistic approach to health. Ingredient Options When formulating a supplement support system for healthy mobility there is a wide variety of science-backed sophisticated raw materials to choose from. Nutrition Industry Executive 37 Movement Through the Ages It was not too long ago when joint and July August 2016 www.niemagazine.com Bone Skeletal Support AIDP KoAct described Somberg is a patented calcium collagen chelate. Calcium still provides the core strength here--and its structural integrity. And giving it a measure of flexibility and supporting the living tissues in the bone is collagen she said. A year-long study of individuals taking KoAct resulted in statistically significant impacts on bone biomarkers and protection against bone mineral density (BMD) loss. Albion Calcium Bisglycinate Chelate is according to Motyka a fully reacted mineral chelate that is one of the most bioavailable forms of calcium. Each calcium molecule is bound to two glycine molecules through Albion s patented chelation process transforming it into an amino acid chelate that has nearly twice the absorption rate of calcium citrate or calcium carbonate he pointed out. The amino acid chelating agents promote the assimilation of the calcium into the cells which helps facilitate the Krebs energy cycle. The chelate structure is then confirmed through FT-IR spectroscopy testing. DimaCal s buffer capacity leads to significantly less gas creation and acid rebound than with calcium carbonate. Albion s DimaCal is structured with two moles of calcium attached to one mole of malic acid. Research studies showed DimaCal was significantly better absorbed than calcium carbonate and maintained elevated serum calcium levels for a much longer period of time. While not water-soluble DimaCal is soluble at more acidic pH levels Motyka explained. Because common foods and beverages typically reduce the absorbability of added calcium Albion s Calci-K is designed to fortify liquid food products it blends calcium potassium and phosphorus molecules into a patented easily absorbed complex. Research results found that Calci-K s absorption rate is not reduced when taken with milk Motyka noted. Calci-K is also able to maintain complete dispersion in liquids at a pH between 3.5 8.0. No additional suspending agents are required. Bergstrom Nutrition OptiMSM displays a broad utility in healthy mobility said Benjamin. He pointed to preliminary studies showing that MSM supports biochemical signaling that helps support development and density of bone. GELITA FORTIBONE said Wolf stimulates osteoblast activity to increase the production of the extracellular bone matrix which is the essential framework for calcium mineralization. In addition it regulates the degenerative processes that affect bones by reducing osteoclast-based protease production. FORTIBONE supports overall bone stability and flexibility. Numerous studies he asserted have addressed the impact of collagen peptides (as found in FORTIBONE) on bone density and in the metabolic and degenerative processes involved in bone formation Go to www.niemagazine.com get for info about this advertiser July August 2016 www.niemagazine.com Nutrition Industry Executive 39 and mineralization. As far as utilization As a clean label and easily digestible food product non-allergenic FORTIBONE can be used in a wide variety of foods such as dairy products functional foods food supplements and beverages Wolf said. Peptan According to Mai Nygaard global director for Peptan Netherlands both in vitro and in vivo studies have revealed Peptan s efficacy in improving bone metabolism and biomechanical parameters through stimulating the endogenous production of collagen and improving bone mass density and bone strength. An animal study indicated that Peptan collagen peptides help to restore bone mineral density and improve bone microarchitecture and solidity. In a follow-up study Peptan exerted the same benefit on bone health in older animals. Peptan has also been found to trigger osteoblasts and to reduce bone resorption. Bone health benefits can be further strengthened when combining collagen peptides with calcium and vitamin D to have a synergistic effect she suggested. Stratum Nutrition ESC eggshell calcium contains around 37 percent elemental calcium in the form of calcium carbonate but unlike most calcium carbonate ingredients Dockery pointed out it also naturally contains transport proteins that help ensure that the calcium is bio-accessible for intestinal absorption. One of the biggest advantages of ESC is its inherently low levels of lead and other heavy metals. Most naturally derived calcium forms also contain unacceptable levels of heavy metals particularly lead which must be removed during processing she explained. ESC does not have to be subjected to additional processing as these heavy metals are present in levels 50 times less than the stringent California Proposition 65 minimums. Joint Support AIDP KollaGen II-xs according to Somberg is a patented and clinically researched highly bioavailable type II collagen processed to maintain the intact forms of collagen compounds to support healthy cartilage integrity and synergistic function. KollaGen II-xs is easily water soluble providing an opportunity for inclusion in beverages and powder formulations Somberg noted. Bergstrom According to Benjamin results from a double-blind placebocontrolled study of 100 individuals with knee or hip OA that was recently published in The Journal of Orthopedics showed distilled MSM significantly improved all WOMAC subscale and SF-36 daily living scores after 26 weeks of supplementation. The authors concluded MSM improved all physical symptoms in the WOMAC scale during the short interventions without any adverse events. GELITA Comprising optimized Bioactive Collagen Peptides FORTIGEL has been scientifically proven to measurably stimulate the synthesis of cartilage tissue stated Wolf. After oral administration FORTIGEL passes the mucosa enters the bloodstream in an intact form and subsequently accumulates in the joint cartilage. Once in the cartilage FORTIGEL stimulates the cartilage cells (chondrocytes) to increase the production of both collagen and proteoglycans--the two major components that make up approximately 90 percent of cartilage s dry mass. FORTIGEL is suitable for use in most foods including dairy products and drinks as well as in dietary supplements. IgY Nutrition According to Hewlings IgY Max is much like a prebiotic in that it changes the composition and activity of the microbiome. IgY antibodies contained in IgY Max help the body eliminate only the harmful bacteria and leave the good microbes intact. IgY antibodies are antibodies from chicken eggs. They work by significantly reducing harmful bacterial adhesion and growth in the GI (gastrointestinal) tract helping to minimize inflammation by decreasing cytokines and HSCRP. In an open label study individuals with arthritis showed significant improvement in Physician Global Assessment score after 30 and 60 days of taking 4.5 g IgY max daily she www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 Go to www.niemagazine.com hsus for info about this advertiser 40 Nutrition Industry Executive Go to www.niemagazine.com natreon for info about this advertiser noted. Further improvements remained 30 days after the individuals stopped taking the product. Natreon AyuFlex is a vegetarian organic non-GMO (genetically modified organism) joint product developed from the ayurvedic ingredient Terminalia chebula which is an edible fruit. According to Kalidindi results of a study that compared AyuFlex to placebo in moderately osteoarthritic subjects (The Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research) demonstrated that consumption of AyuFlex 500 mg twice daily for 12 weeks resulted in significant improvements in WOMAC scores compared to placebo (36 percent reduction vs. 4.52 percent in placebo) knee swelling index and VAS pain stiffness and disability. The therapeutic benefit was evident in as short as four weeks. In addition to the study in moderately osteoarthritic patients there are two randomized double-blind placebo controlled crossover studies that were completed to examine the analgesic activity of AyuFlex in healthy human volunteers. In these studies subjects were given a single 1 000 mg dose of AyuFlex and subjected to a hot air pain model or a mechanical pain model. AyuFlex demonstrated analgesic activity by showing a significant increase in both force and time for pain threshold and pain tolerance (statistically significant at p 0.001 compared to placebo). Based on an invitro study the most likely mechanism of action is via COX-1 COX-2 and 5LOX inhibition Kalidindi said. Peptan A double-blind placebocontrolled study of 94 women with diagnosed knee OA showed that 8 g of Peptan daily significantly improved joint comfort and functionality Nygaard noted. The Peptan consumption resulted in a significant decrease of the WOMAC score and the women Go to www.niemagazine.com herballyyours for info about this advertiser 42 Nutrition Industry Executive recorded an improvement of 37 percent in joint pain score 44 percent in stiffness score and 22 percent in function score. Soft Gel Technologies Inc. Perluxan a proprietary hops extract is backed by several human clinical trials including a 14-day double-blind trial in OA patients that found Perluxan effective at relieving chronic joint pain compared to placebo Holtby reported. The study also showed a fast-acting effect on mean pain relief significant improvement over placebo could be measured only two hours after the first ingestion. A second double-blind randomized parallel design trial was conducted on 19 healthy subjects who received a single dose of ibuprofen (400 mg) a soft gel containing hops resin (450 mg) or a capsule containing hops in powder form (300 mg 4x day). Both supplement forms were standardized for hops alpha acids (150 mg). Levels of COX-1 and COX-2 were monitored at regular intervals over nine hours after the initial dose. The hops preparations were as effective as ibuprofen at inhibiting COX-2 but had significant COX-1 sparing activity over a ninehour period Holtby stated. It was interesting to note that the hops resin soft gel was only administered once whereas the hops powder capsules were administered in four divided doses over a nine-hour time period. Soft Gel Technologies Inc. s Injuv is according to Holtby proven to be a highly bioavailable oral form of hyaluronic acid (HA). Numerous studies have shown that HA has favorable impact on relief of discomfort and joint function after intraarticular injection found to be equal to or better than the relief obtained through the use of NSAIDs and steroids with longer lasting results he said. Recent research also indicates that HA has chondroprotective and or chondrostimulating effects. Additional studies have demonstrated HA s positive effect on the cellmediated immune response associated with inflammation in individuals with temporomandibular joint disorders. Stratum Nutrition NEM eggshell membrane Dockery described is a minimally processed food-derived ingredient composed mostly of a unique matrix of proteins and peptides including several types of collagen. Within this matrix are also various glycosaminoglycans including chondroitin www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 Go to www.niemagazine.com bergstrom for info about this advertiser sulfate keratin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. NEM is supported by numerous published clinical research for benefits to joint comfort and flexibility. The published studies consisting of open label pilot trials independent open label trials and a randomized placebocontrolled trial have all revealed statistically significant positive outcomes she said. In addition multiple published in vitro and in vivo studies have begun to elucidate the mode of action for NEM s anti-inflammatory benefits and theorize the involvement of an oral tolerance mechanism. Most recently animal studies have demonstrated chondroprotective benefits of NEM supplementation. Muscle Support Bergstrom Nutrition There have been a couple of recent studies that sug- gest OptiMSM helps relieve muscle soreness following exercise according to Benjamin. Additionally data has shown that MSM reduces creatine kinase a marker of muscle damage that typically arises from exercise. Data just presented this year at Experimental Biology suggests that OptiMSM may directly alter skeletal muscle response to stress and injury and serve as an ergogenic aid to protect skeletal muscle from injury Benjamin noted. GELITA A clinical study involving GELITA s BODYBALANCE which contains specific Bioactive Collagen Peptides was recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Wolf stated that this was the first study to investigate the effects of collagen peptides on body composition and muscle strength. The main finding of the study was that GELITA s specific collagen peptides further increased the benefits of resistance training in elderly people with sarcopenia (muscle wasting). Compared with placebo participants in the collagen-supplemented group showed a significant increase in fatfree mass ( 4.2 kg compared with 2.9 kg) and muscle strength ( 16.5 Nm compared with 7.3 Nm) as well as a statistically significant reduction in fat mass (-5.4 kg compared with -3.5 kg). The study results demonstrated that the combination of resistance exercise and supplementation with BODYBALANCE was well suited to strengthen muscular power and both fight and prevent sarcopenia Wolf concluded. IgY Nutrition In one study noted Hewlings individuals who consumed 4.5 g of IgY Max for 10 days exhibited increased muscular strength and endurance decreased muscle soreness and enhanced muscular repair. This is an attractive outcome not only for younger generations who want to attain physical fitness but for older generations who want to maintain healthy mobility in an active lifestyle. Peptan Nygaard pointed to a twoyear-long study that demonstrated that supplementation with a mix of collagen peptides BCAA (branched chain amino acids) and arginine decreased the injury rate for tendons ligaments joints and muscles. Similar results were also reported for collagen hydrolysate with further studies demonstrating a significant increase in collagen fiber diameter indicating improved strength and a faster return to play after injury she described. Of course there are many more quality ingredients formulated and researched for healthy mobility be it targeting bones joints or muscle health. When adults can remain active moving at free will without too much discomfort they can and will accomplish so much more as they age. By James Gormley I n 2015 vision health emerged as the third most dynamic health and wellness positioning platform globally behind energy boosting and food intolerance said Simone Baroke contributing analyst for market research provider Euromonitor International. As far as functional vision health ingredients go both vitamin D and astaxanthin in particular are expected to show real growth provided they continue to be supported by solid scientific research Baroke noted. While the vision health category seemed to stall in 2010 strong sales and category expansion marked the 2011-2015 period with the strongest growth of 5 percent in 2015 alone added Baroke. That being said vision health is still the smallest of 14 categories tracked by Euromonitor. With global sales of 46 Nutrition Industry Executive vision-health-packaged foods and beverages reaching 10 million in 2015 this figure still pales compared to market monsters such as brain health and beauty from within which racked up global sales of 271 and 299 million in 2015 respectively. This does not take into account eye health dietary supplements however which saw global product sales of 1.128 billion in 2015. Baroke said that vision health-focused consumers seek out colorful fruits and veggies since there is a growing body of evidence that [...] carotenoid-rich produce if consumed over long periods of time prevents conditions that cause eye health problems such as age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). Regarding age there are currently more than 40 million people age 65 and older in the United States and that number is expected to double by 2050. As people age their risk for eye diseases and conditions increases such as for ARMD cataracts diabetic retinopathy dry eye glaucoma and low vision. Evidence of aging s influence on vision and eye disease is mounting notes the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vision Health Initiative (VHI) which links risk factors that consumers can modify (i.e. smoking ultraviolet light exposure avoidable trauma etc.) and the leading eye diseases affecting older Americans. Even the CDC now admits that diets rich in antioxidants support vision health. Broad consumer awareness of these risks has helped fuel the rise in vision-health supplements and packaged products. In fact according to the www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) 2015 Spectrums of Healthy Aging in America Consumer Report a whopping 35 percent of seniors Baby Boomers and Generation Xers consider vision problems to be among their biggest fears of aging. What s Up Doc Of the more than 700 carotenoids found in nature only 13 to 15 are found in the bloodstream as a result of dietary intake and only two of these namely lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the human retina. These two [carotenoids] are found in the retina at substantially higher concentrations (more than 1 000 times) than they are found in the human bloodstream said Richard Roberts PhD principal manager scientific affairs & technical services for Kemin Human Nutrition and Health. With thanks to Bugs Bunny--and to major carotenoid research published since 2001--everybody has now heard of beta-carotene for vision health. But what specific advantages do betacarotene s carotenoid brethren offer manufacturers and consumers Although it seems counterintuitive that beta-carotene should have been included in the original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) --the first really big nutrition and vision study-- there were no commercial sources of lutein or zeaxanthin available in 1989 when the plan for the AREDS study was mapped out. FloraGLO Lutein Kemin s brand of lutein was the first commercial source of lutein source available in the vitamin and dietary supplement market and was commercially available a couple of years later explained Kemin s Roberts. The only other carotenoid present in the retina of the eye namely meso-zeaxanthin has been found to be derived from a transformation of lutein. Lutein zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin form the macular pigment that filters light that has passed through the lens and is focused upon the macula of the eye where the highest amount of photoreceptors in the eye exist Roberts added. This filtering capacity helps protect the retina from overexposure to the shortest wavelengths of light the blue wavelengths of light that can damage sensitive retinal tissues-- additionally these carotenoids exhibit significant antioxidant properties to help neutralize oxidative reactions that can occur in the retina as a result of light exposure. July August 2016 www.niemagazine.com These properties Roberts said together with the significant concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin in the retina were found to be important enough for compel the U.S. National Eye Institute (NEI part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health) to initiate the AREDS2 study in which the efficacy of lutein and zeaxanthin in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was demonstrated. In addition to the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin in ARMD lutein has also been found to help reduce inflammation which may prove helpful in other vision conditions including uveitis diabetic retinopathy and retinal ischemia. The ability of lutein and zeaxanthin to filter the blue wavelengths of light not only helps protect the human eye from light-induced damage but this property has also been shown to have effects upon visual capabilities observed Roberts. And while numerous studies have shown that supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin increase contrast sensitivity in older adults this effect Roberts said it has even been shown to improve visual performance in young healthy adults. Studies in young adults have demonstrated that lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation helps improve tolerance to glaring light increase contrast sensitivity improve chromatic contrast and reduce photostress recovery times. Golan Raz senior vice president and head Global Health Division at New Jersey-based Lycored agreed as to the importance of lutein One of the most important findings in regard to carotenoids and eye health is the relationship between lutein and lycopene. Epidemiological data show that people who suffers from ARMD [...] also seems to have lower levels of lycopene in their blood compared to the average population noted Lycored s Raz. This finding triggered additional research that [concluded] with the understanding that lycopene protects lutein from oxidation so that the lutein will reach the eye and be absorbed in the target organ in the macula--so Lycored s R&D teams developed a combination formula Lyc-O-Lutein that includes both lutein and lycopene that were shown to be synergistic in pre-clinical and clinical studies Raz added. Lutein and zeaxanthin (sometimes called the macular carotenoids) are the only known carotenoids found in the macula the area of the eye which provides the highest visual acuity and color contrast in order to support vision and protect against UV damage. In fact New Jersey-based OmniActive Health Technologies has a special research and product development focus on both lutein and zeaxanthin. Through our Lutein For Every Age campaign OmniActive has taken a leadership position in promoting the importance of the macular carotenoids by demonstrating their benefits through our robust and ongoing clinical program in a variety of categories and age groups said Lynda M. Doyle senior vice president global marketing OmniActive Health Technologies. We ve not only differentiated our Lutemax 2020 with novel science but also with our formula Doyle pointed out. Most macular carotenoid formulas typically provide lutein and only one of the zeaxanthin isomers RR-zeaxanthin however RS (meso)-zeaxanthin--a potent antioxidant that protects the center of the macula which is most susceptible to photo-oxidative damage--is also a necessary component for complete visual health. Lutemax 2020 is a convenient and cost-effective approach to supply all three macular carotenoids at significant levels for a complete formula. Natural astaxanthin is nature s most powerful (Continued on page 54) Nutrition Industry Executive 47 Research&Development NOT SO HEAVY METAL FORMULATING WITH MINERALS By Lisa Schofield he mineral kingdom provides many elements humans require for homeostasis--although this is far from news consumers equate foods and beverages that have superior mineral content with good for me. For example if your company creates a healthy cereal pack with no fortified minerals and the competition has something very similar but with added calcium and iron the consumer will likely select the competition. According to Thierry Roulet head of North American operations for New York-based DPL-US foods that are easily fortified with minerals in general include beverages cereals and cereal bars milk and dairy products dry and processed foods. Max Motyka consultant to Utahbased Albion Minerals agreed for the most part noting that it may be easy to think that fortifying foods with healthy minerals may be quite challenging however it is certain forms of minerals that are the difference between effective and ineffective formulation. He pointed out that dairy products such as 48 Nutrition Industry Executive T milk UHT milk margarine and yogurts are well suited to fortification with certain forms of iron zinc and calcium. Ferrous bisglycinate chelate is an excellent form of iron to fortify dairy products he explained. However ferrous sulfate is not. Rice sugar and salt are difficult to fortify unless the right mineral form is used. Meats vegetables and fruit are not easily fortified. Generally foods all present different challenges for fortification--the choice of the right form of the mineral is the key. Using calcium carbonate as an example Adrian J ger business development manager Omya International AG headquartered in Switzerland explained that foods that are easily fortified with this particular form of calcium include baby foods neutral beverages cereals snacks or baked goods. Because Omya minerals have a small particle size there is no change in the taste of the products he said. In liquid applications he added for example the fine particles remain in suspension for longer which means that consumers obtain the calcium dose they expect because it does not stick to the bottom of the bottle or form a sediment). Foods that aren t easily fortified with calcium carbonate include acidic beverages meat or fruit preparations. When the pH-value is too acidic J ger explained calcium carbonate dissolves. As a result carbon dioxide is released and distends the product packaging. Furthermore the chemical reaction creates a bland taste and reduces the quality. With a high calcium content of approximately 40 percent Omya s Calcipur calcium carbonate offers considerable benefits as a fortification agent J ger described. He added that up to five times less Calcipur is required than other available technical solutions to attain the same calcium dose in a finished food product therefore manufacturers can minimize the cost of supplementation. Addressing Difficulties Like individual people each element has its own inherent challenges. With regard to calcium carbonate noted J ger pH stability is one of the major www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 Go to www.niemagazine.com dpl-us for info about this advertiser Research&Development challenges that has to be considered when fortifying foods. In general according to Roulet considerations that can impart challenges when formulating with specific minerals and their forms include taste solubility color metal content and even production processes. More specifically Motyka pointed out some minerals pose solubility issues in some foods while others (eg zinc and iron) will present palatability issues. Further bioavailability of other mineral forms may be compromised in certain foods. And organoleptically some minerals give an off taste odor color or texture. When it comes to typical iron he noted lozenges chewables and beverages fortified with it can tend to impart a metallic aftertaste that many consumers find unappealing. In fact when this exists approximately 87 percent of doctors in a survey from the American Academy of Pediatrics reported that this taste factor is a significant reason for non-compliance. Albion s Iron Taste Free was developed to address this issue. Several clinical studies have shown a greater absorption rate for Iron Taste Free than with ferrous sulfate Motyka reported. Researchers found that electrochemical neutrality charge balance and low solubility give Iron Taste Free stability and sensory quality advantages. Iron Taste Free has been shown to be an effective way to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia due to its bioavailability and safety. below the legal thresholds. Our company complies with very strict regulations and ensures that any heavy metal contaminants are kept to an absolute minimum--a vital aspect for producers of baby foods for example he commented. Additionally J ger assured Omya s production plant is GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 compliant and also has halal and kosher certificates. Furthermore selected products meet USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) FCC (Food Chemiacls Codex) and E170 requirements. this amino acid is recognized by the body and is efficiently absorbed across the intestinal wall. When the glycine is fully reacted with the mineral ion the resulting chelate molecule is stable and small enough for effective absorption. When your product contains minerals chelated with amino acids it is more bioavailable and easily metabolized Motyka pointed out. Many factors can interfere with the body s natural ability to convert inorganic minerals into an organic form. Over decades of continuous research Albion has secured multiple patents specifically related to mineral chelation. Further Motyka explained the manufacturing process used to bind minerals with ligands will have a direct impact on the quality of the nutritional value and absorption of the finished product. Inexpensive processes such as dry mixing do not create fully reacted mineral chelates. Albion uses a highly controlled manufacturing process that optimizes the chemical molecular ratios and reactions necessary for chelation. In addition Albion has customized its manufacturing process for each combination of mineral and organic ligand and has acquired a multitude of patents relating to its bonding and manufacturing processes he stated. A 2014 report entitled Global Market Study on Mineral Supplements published by Persistence Market Research stated that the largest mineral supplements market is North America. Due to the combination of a growing aging population and increased disposable income Asia Pacific is expected to become a robust mineral supplement market by 2020. The authors of the report asserted With increasing awareness about daily nutritional requirements more consumers are expected to start consuming mineral supplements in the coming years thus driving the mineral supplements market. Increased technological sophistication of mineral sourcing and processing research and food and beverage technology that can now safely and effectively utilize absorbable minerals has created numerous opportunities for mineral-fortified products that consumers will rely upon. NIE Sourcing for Safety When most people think of minerals they picture caves mines and veins flowing underneath the ground. True to an extent noted Patrick Stano vice president sales and marketing North America DPL-USA. Various minerals for health are mined from throughout the world and most are manufactured by chemical synthesis. The chemical reaction is very simple Acid Base - Salt Water he explained. And with the deeper recesses of the earth as the environment for minerals safety for consumption may be questioned. In the case of calcium carbonate said J ger mineral deposits are carefully selected to guarantee that only food-grade raw materials are used. In doing so he stated the concentrations of any potentially harmful components in Omya products fall significantly 50 Nutrition Industry Executive According to Motyka Albion uses USP or FCC quality starting materials. Duber-Smith verything in this wonderful world of ours has a life cycle. Every creature is born grows matures and eventually dies a natural process that clears the way for new generations to do the same. It can be somewhat depressing to admit but every situation we face large or small has a beginning middle and an end. There is no escaping the ravages of time try as we might. And so it is also true with regard to the marketing of goods and services as every industry product category and product itself has what marketers call a life cycle. In the interest of space this piece will focus the individual product and will touch on each stage of this venerable yet highly useful marketing tool known as the Product Life Cycle model. It defines 52 Nutrition Industry Executive E in very general terms the stages that new products move through as they enter get established in and ultimately depart the marketplace. The purpose of such a model is to provide clues as to where a marketer might want to begin when his her product reached Figure 1. each stage. The Product Life Cycle begins at the point where the marketer promotes and distributes a new product which was the seventh stage of the NPD process. The Life Cycle model (Figure 1) consists of four stages--introduction growth maturity and decline--followed by the ultimate deletion of the product after profits have been harvested. It is particularly important to understand the relative roles of revenue profit marketing budget competition and level of consumer adoption at each stage so that marketers www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 are better able to adjust marketing strategy in an appropriate manner when their products inevitably reach the next stage. Product Introduction When a good or service is brought to market (in this case I will use a USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Certified Organic shampoo as an example) revenue is often slow to materialize. Obviously the pace of consumer adoption often depends largely on the level of brand awareness and overall brand equity that a particular new product might already possess. This is the case with regard to brand extensions which comprise the majority of new product introductions. It also might depend on whether or not the product is simply a new iteration of a previous product a form of continuous innovation and clearly such a product has a better chance than most of surviving for an extended period of time. Whatever the situation it follows that the marketing budget at this stage should be at its highest level since communicating on a large scale is a rather expensive endeavor. Multiple advertising impressions over time are generally required to make consumers remember the product and move them to action. Marketers generally prefer an integrated marketing communications strategy applied across multiple media and this costs money. In addition shelf space for our organic shampoo will be limited since there are already many others on the market and so marketers will most likely have to pay to get and keep shelf space. Achieving sustainable distribution is probably the most difficult part of the strategic marketing process and this is why profits in the Introduction stage are negligible if they exist at all. Wise marketers know that most extra cash on hand should be invested in marketing rather than used for other purposes in the beginning stages. About 90 percent of new products fail to reach their five-year anniversaries so the odds are stacked against you. The initial customers to adopt the new product are often called Innovators a very small but influential group of opinion leaders that make July August 2016 www.niemagazine.com great brand ambassadors in social media channels and there are few if any competitors at this point if you have a unique product. Relatively speaking there are very few true innovations in the world of cosmetics so new products often already face stiff competition in their respective categories. But if you do have something really new (especially through a patent) you just might enjoy a temporary but fruitful market monopoly. there is a true need for your product. Managing Maturity Growth cannot last forever. Eventually a product s revenue and profit levels reach a peak and at this stage a marketer is finally able to significantly reduce the marketing budget so that profits may be maximized pivoting away from gaining market share and toward defending it. The fact that profits are maximized at this stage is very important because said proceeds from these cash cows are often reinvested in the development of additional new products or for organizational expansion. The number of competitors also peaks at this stage and indeed the appearance of substitutes (products that meet the same need but are in a different product category--body wash versus bar soap for example) become a very real threat as innovative competitors find alternative ways to satisfy consumers and create exciting new products with optimal market potential. At this time the Late Majority consumer group (another full 35 percent of the market potential) adopts your shampoo and it is a sign that your product is at the end of this third life cycle stage when profit growth actually begins to decline. Thus in an effort to avoid the inevitable demise of the product savvy marketers will react by adding minor features or by repositioning the product in the minds of consumers a strategy that has been successfully employed by Church and Dwight s Arm and Hammer baking soda on more than one occasion. Baking soda became a food freshener which eventually turned into an effective yet gentle cleanser. All of these uses amazingly enough are still relevant and we never see another product like it. Market Growth If your product is strong enough to make it to this stage (and many are not) it is here that revenue begins its rapid rise and because fixed costs can be spread over more units when you increase product velocity profit margins improve and overall profit levels begin to climb as well. Now that the Innovators are already nice and lathered up the next group of consumers the Early Adopters begin to buy your cool new organic shampoo. And as time passes another group the Early Majority consisting of a full 35 percent of your product s market potential has finally decided that they d like to try your shampoo as well. The marketing budget at this stage is still very high and if numerous powerful competitors have entered the market you might want to actually increase the budget in this all-important second stage of the Product Life Cycle. Nevertheless competition will surely increase if Facing Decline One could easily guess what happens in the final stage of the Product Life Cycle--Decline. If your product arrives here it could mean that you ve beaten the odds and have enjoyed success or that your product underperformed and moved very quickly through the cycle or that you have planned for the product to become obsolete and you have deftly moved your customers toward Nutrition Industry Executive 53 BuildingBetterBrands an improved replacement. Nevertheless you are here and your revenues and profits are declining (either rapidly or steadily) competitors are exiting the market and if you have been successful and your product is reaching its market potential an undesirable group of consumers called Laggards are finally sitting at the proverbial table enjoying your product while it lasts (representing a final 15 percent of the market potential). The marketing budget at this stage should be negligible enough to defend some shelf space and it is generally too late to reposition or rejuvenate the product in any way so it must be harvested for remaining profit potential and eventually deleted from the product mix. Hopefully you have another product already in the introduction or growth stages in anticipation of the demise of your product. Remember that these are only general guidelines and that a product s life cycle can last a few months a few years or many decades. New products replace old ones product substitutes can be disruptive and destroy entire industries marketers can add new features to mainstay products and sometimes a new need can be addressed with the same old product as we saw with the Arm and Hammer example. The point of the whole thing is that product management is a process with distinct stages. Knowing which stage your product is in is the easy part. More difficult is figuring out how to maintain growth and then maturity status for as long as possible. No one (except for Steve Jobs and legions of ungrateful salespeople) ever said marketing was easy and case study after case study teaches us that it a science to be studied so that best practices can be applied. In the age of global brands and global markets ignorance comes at a steep price indeed. Manage your product well and you will dramatically increase your chances of success. NIE Darrin C. This red carotenoid is the reason behind salmon lobster and shrimp coloration--when compared to other popular antioxidants natural astaxanthin was shown to be far superior. The reason lies in its unique chemical structure that allows it to span the entire lipid bilayer of the cell membrane including the mitochondrial membrane thus providing the ultimate protection from the inside out Kuncewitch added. Carotenoids including betacarotene have a tendency to burn out and initiate a chain reaction which can create more free radicals--natural astaxanthin is the purest antioxidant with bare minimum pro-oxidant activity. 54 Nutrition Industry Executive However since astaxanthin is virtually insoluble in gastric and intestinal fluids it has poor bioavailability--even in solubilized formulas it quickly precipitates out once saturation is reached making it hard for the body to absorb and utilize. Maypro s MicroActive Astaxanthin was developed to address this issue through a micronized sustained-release technology that allows for better absorption and retention said Dan Lifton president of New York-based Maypro s Proprietary Branded Ingredients Group. MicroActive Astaxanthin is micronized meaning the particles have been reduced to a small particle size (about 10 microns) allowing for greater transit through veins and capillaries--in addition the special mix of polymers in MicroActive Astaxanthin slows the rate at which the astaxanthin is released so it stays in the bloodstream longer. the regular use of digital screens vision may become compromised concluded AstaReal s Kuncewitch. In fact a relatively new condition has been coined Computer Vision Syndrome --it encompasses eyestrain as well as dry eyes--and now that children are growing up from toddlerhood viewing flatscreens there is a huge opportunity here for natural astaxanthin and its distinctive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power. By Janet Poveromo he human body is in a constant state of metabolic reactions several of which generate free radicals that need to be quenched since they can cause damage to cells tissues and vital organs. The human system has the potential to quench these free radicals but only to a certain extent said Shaheen Majeed marketing director with Sabinsa in Utah. With demanding stressful lifestyles free radical generation is very high and can be effectively controlled only with the use of antioxidants. In this scenario globally the demand for antioxidants is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. Statistics reveal that antioxidant consumption is highest in the U.S. Western Europe and China the world s largest markets. With increasing consumer awareness this demand is anticipated to grow exponentially. John Deaton vice president of sci- T ence and technology with Deerland Enzymes in Georgia said that in addition antioxidants target a wide range of health concerns encompassing several product categories in the nutraceuticals space. Antioxidants combat oxidative stress and support overall immunity. They also promote heart health and can benefit the eyes brain joints and skin. Because of this wide variety of health benefits along with a strong consumer awareness for antioxidants we re seeing these ingredients incorporated into products for anti-aging cleansing detox and even sports nutrition. The trends associated with antioxidants reflect a general consumer shift toward preventive health due in part to our aging population. According to Sloan Trends Healthy Agers is an identifiable 57 million person-strong Baby Boomer sub-segment who are ready to make changes to their diets and lifestyles in the interest of remaining healthy and active. It is predicted that this group will reach 33 percent of the adult population by 2020. Top health concerns among this target are weight heart health joint digestive health and energy levels. Steve Siegel vice president of New Jersey-based Ecuadorian Rainforest also pointed out that according to a report by Grand View Research the antioxidants market is set to be worth 4.14 billion by 2022. The growth is due to several factors including more consumer awareness about the benefits of antioxidants and growth in new markets such as Asia. A Closer Look It is essential to provide natural antioxidants that are safe effective and in a stable form Majeed noted. Another area of research interest is the bioavailability of natural products. www.niemagazine.com July August 2016 56 Nutrition Industry Executive Pharmacokinetics of compounds for their bioavailability is very crucial to fix safe and effective dosages of a compound. Although antioxidants are said to have a whole array of health benefits Deaton noted that the trend seems to have moved from general antioxidants to condition-specific approaches that focus on the repair of specific tissues such as the liver kidneys stomach and intestines. Dr. Aparna Kalidindi technical sales and marketing manager with Natreon Inc. in New Jersey noted that the usefulness of ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) have been questioned recently. For example ORAC is an in vitro test and does not measure bioavailability in vivo stability and retention of antioxidants by tissues she said. The ORAC score of a food or compound does not always predict the degree to which a compound is beneficial in the body. However the ORAC value can be relevant in certain situations--it can still be used to identify foods that have been separately shown to have in vivo health benefits. Majeed added Proven and accepted testing methods with high levels of reproducibility have been accepted globally. With slight modifications in sample processing FRAP and ORAC help analyze the antioxidant potential of any compound (lipophilic or lipophobic). More recent methodologies such as ABEL-RAC (analysis by emitted light relative antioxidant capacity) are believed to be more sensitive methods of analysis. Similar to any other field of innovation the analytical methodologies also evolve with more sensitivity. Deaton pointed out that there are four types of free radicals and until recently research has mainly focused on the hydroxyl variety. In fact the ORAC value has been a widely recognized indicator of antioxidant potency for many years he said. The ORAC method essentially uses a specific antioxidant component of vitamin E as the standard for comparison. The drawback in using this method exclusively is that this component of vitamin E is only one type of antioxidant. It s important to know that just because an ingredient doesn t correlate with the properties of vitamin E it doesn t mean it s low in antioxidant potency. Many researchers are finding that it makes more sense to July August 2016 www.niemagazine.com combine the ORAC with other assays to get a more complete understanding. Furthermore there is no evidence that ORAC values have any biological significance following consumption of any food Deaton said. Researchers today are focusing more on how to make antioxidant products that are more bio-accessible. Similarly FRAP is a measurement of antioxidant power that uses blood plasma. This test is also somewhat limiting as other tissues can be tested. Vitamin E was formerly a very popular antioxidant that took a major plummet in sales when a frightening study on a limited segment of the population was widely reported in the media. The study was discredited but it s taken that vitamin a long time to recover consumer trust. -- Shaheen Majeed Sabinsa Deaton concluded that tests such as ORAC and FRAP are still relevant but only tell part of the story. There are now much more comprehensive testing methods available to determine the actual antioxidant potency of an ingredient. lipoic acid and astaxanthin are currently trending Kalidindi said. Natreon s standardized aqueous extracts--Capros (amla) for cardiovascular health AyuFlex (Terminalia chebula) for joint health Ayuric (Terminalia bellerica) for hyperuricemia are emerging antioxidants with multiple efficacy and safety studies to substantiate their health claims she said. For example Capros has shown to improve endothelial function increases nitric oxide levels by 50 percent increases HDL by 20 percent and decreases LDL by 25 percent. AyuFlex improves joint health by decreasing mWOMAC scores by 36 percent compared to placebo. Ayuric decreases uric acid levels by 28 percent compared to placebo and was 60 percent as effective as the prescription medication febuxostat. Beta-carotene vitamins C and E have recently fallen out of favor due to skepticism over the long-term health benefits Kalidindi noted. In addition according to Deaton exotic fruit and berry extracts are trending now but these are large complex molecules that are not easily absorbed. One of the more popular antioxidant ingredients is glutathione. You might call it nature s strongest antioxidant -- all living organisms have it and it serves as a recycling pathway. It contributes directly to the destruction of reactive oxygen compounds and maintains recycles vitamins C and E which also exert an antioxidant effect. It s a small peptide making it more accessible and easily absorbed. Utilizing Antioxidant Ingredients Many nutritionists insist that a diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables provides a sufficient level of antioxidant support. However the polyphenols in these foods that provide the antioxidant action are large complex molecules that are often poorly absorbed by the body Deaton pointed out. Enzyme supplements continue to gain recognition among consumers for their role in the bioavailability of nutrients from foods he said. The ability to break down food into its basic and useful components is of critical concern for consumers interested in functional nutrition for growth development and supporting healthy aging. For example a supplement containing a blend of carbohydrase enzymes would maximize the bio-accessibility of the polyphenols present in the fruits and vegetables that Nutrition Industry Executive 57 Antioxidant Ingredient Trends According to Majeed curcumin is the most recent rock star herbal product and in addition to its anti-inflammatory capabilities other curcumin attributes are its well-known antioxidant properties. Also we re seeing a fairly rapid increase in sales of the adaptogen ashwagandha which is a potent antioxidant. Vitamin E was formerly a very popular antioxidant that took a major plummet in sales when a frightening study on a limited segment of the population was widely reported in the media. The study was discredited but it s taken that vitamin a long time to recover consumer trust. At Natreon turmeric curcumin alpha Nutraceuticals are consumed. Deerland Enzymes ThioZyme AO is targeted to help maintain a healthy antioxidant pro-oxidant balance. Unlike most antioxidant products on the market ThioZymeAO combines pivotal cellular antioxidants with their vital partners antioxidant enzymes to combat toxic free radicals and help alleviate damaging oxidative stress according to Deaton. The components of ThioZymeAO work synergistically to keep the body s defensive network functioning properly both by direct antioxidant action and by regeneration of antioxidants including vitamins C and E and glutathione. ThioZymeAO replicates the body s main anti-oxidant defense system with endogenous antioxidants and provides the components required to replicate the body s own antioxidant recycling mechanism. Though the general population may not be able to describe the mechanism of action they know antioxidants are good for them Majeed added. Vitamin C is a good example of this. Consumers find them in foods and beverages that may be labeled a good source of antioxidants but they also look for them in dietary supplements. And although antioxidants are still a strong marketing point for supplements said Siegel consumers are also looking for additional benefits. When promoting natural antioxidant supplements a great way to entice consumers and keep them over time is to alert them to other benefits they would receive by using the product. While consumers are aware of the benefits of antioxidants they want a product that gives them more Majeed agreed adding that curcumin and ashwagandha are so popular because they convey other positive benefits as well antioxidant properties. As effective as antioxidants are in quenching free radicals a healthier lifestyle is an essential requirement for good health he noted. Regular physical activities intake of balanced nutrition maintaining sleep patterns along with safe natural antioxidants is a holistic approach to be fit and fine tomorrow. Sustainable production anchored by vertical integration with some of the largest U.S. egg processing partners assures Biova unmatched raw material supply-- the right combination of access and capability to drive opportunity and growth. Key Technology Founded on innovative technological research Biova holds multiple patents including OvaPure Biova s patented technology for separating nutrient-rich egg membrane from eggshells. OvaPure is an ecofriendly process ensuring the egg membrane s natural nutrient matrix remains intact while leaving minimal calcium residue. Hydro5 Biova s proprietary patented hydrolyzation process for making egg membrane water soluble while retaining natural nutrient ratios. The Hydro5 process helps assure minimal calcium remnants for low-ash high-protein water soluble egg membrane (WSEM). These two processes are integral in creating Ovacore--the world s leading water soluble egg membrane (WSEM) commercially viable material which Biova markets in the form of three branded ingredients BiovaFlex for joint health BiovaDerm for skincare BiovaPlex for pet health applications. Water solubility means formulators have multiple delivery system options to work with besides conventional pill capsule tablets. Soft chews gummies stick packs ready to drinks etc.--all are made possible with Biova WSEM ingredients along with topical applications like lotions and creams. This unique ingredient attribute expands consumer lifestyle marketing opportunities. Third-party independent research indicates anywhere from 40 to 70 percent of adults have difficulty swallowing conventional pills tablets. WSEM from Biova offers marketers a tremendous opportunity to reach both existing and new customers via different delivery 64 Nutrition Industry Executive options. The natural nutrient ratio of Ovacore WSEM contains beneficial proteins (e.g. elastin 20 percent) collagens (e.g. total collagen 20 percent) and glycosaminoglycans (e.g. chondroitin glucosamine total GAGs 8 percent). All Biova WSEM ingredients are standardized to exacting uniform nutrient profiles for consistent formulation and production characteristics. Quality Assurance Ensuring safety begins with USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) monitoring at Biova s partner egg-breaking facilities and continues until the final ingredients are complete. Biova-branded WSEM ingredients are self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) halal kosher and compliant with cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) regulations. Key Products For human product applications Biova offers the following--100 percent made in the USA--branded ingredients BiovaFlex supports the stability and flexibility of synovial joint functions. It features natural nutrient ratios of beneficial proteins (e.g. elastin) collagens and glycosaminoglycans (e.g. traces of chondroitin glucosamine). The most recent published randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover research study demonstrated a daily 450 mg dose of BiovaFlex was associated with improved joint range of motion (ROM) and increased activity levels. Subgroup analysis showed reduction of back pain--as one might experience from exercise and or daily activity--after just five days. BiovaFlex is standardized at 88 percent protein. BiovaDerm targets connective epithelial and neural tissue functional support plus support for healthy skin tonality and moisture retention. BiovaDerm is elementally rich in glycosaminoglycans dermatan sulfate chondroitin-4-sulfate and other elements including ovotransferrin 3-desmosine isodesmosine lysyl oxidase and lysozome. Preliminary research shows BiovaDerm resulted in up to 50 percent reductions in the appearance of deep skin wrinkles in as little as 14 days. Their dedication to growing the best Concord and Niagara grapes allows Welch s to provide families with the delicious juices jams and jellies they ve loved for years. And Welch s new Global Ingredients Group has now found a way to deliver the goodness of these grapes in new formats. In fact the goal of Ephraim Wales Bull who grew the very first Concord grape in 1849 was to develop a grape that would thrive in the harsh climate and soil of the Northeastern United States. Bull was unaware that he d grown an inherently healthy superfruit that would deliver the taste and nutrition consumers would seek more than 150 years later. Years after Bull s achievement Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch an inventor physician and dentist furthered the Concord grape s reach as he sought to produce an unfermented sacramental wine for fellow church parishioners. In 1869 Welch pioneered fruit juice production when he successfully pasteurized Concord grape juice for the first time in his Vineland NJ kitchen. In the late 1800s Thomas s son Charles quit dentistry and committed his career to marketing Welch s Grape Juice. Taking Grape Goodness Out of the Bottle Welch s has collaborated with Taura Natural Ingredients to introduce FruitWorx an innovative functional ingredient made from Welch s own Concord and Niagara grapes. FruitWorx inclusions are made using URC (Ultra Rapid Concentration) a unique process that concentrates the natural goodness of Welch s grape juices and purees into pieces that are delicious on their own or as a versatile ingredient for a variety of applications. Taura s innovative technology lets Welch s take the taste and nutrition of its unique grapes beyond 100 percent juice to products like snack bars bakery products and breakfast cereals for the first time. Welch s Concord FruitWorx contains only natural fruit sugars and delivers the same bold delicious flavor and plant nutrients found in Welch s 100% Grape Juice. Concord Grapes A Natural Nutrition Powerhouse For generations families have trusted Welch s to deliver naturally good delicious grape products. It all starts with the Concord grape which is distinct from other grapes including many table grapes because of its thick dark purple skin and crunchy seeds both of which hold the key to this grape s goodness. That s because naturally occurring plant nutrients called polyphenols are concentrated in the skins and seeds. Research suggests that polyphenols like those found in the Concord grape can play a role in promoting health. To preserve the grapes natural nutrition power Welch s Concord grape juice is made by squeezing whole Concord grapes--skins seeds and all--to release healthy polyphenols straight from the grape into the juice. Turning Grapes Into a Beloved American Brand In addition to launching the shelf-stable juice industry Dr. Welch s inventive spirit inspired a new American brand as well as food innovators who would grow Welch s through numerous trusted products. Since Charles popularized grape juice at the turn of the 20th century Welch s has become a beloved American brand. As the world s leading marketer and producer of Concord and Niagara grape-based products Welch s is one of America s oldest juice company with nearly 150 years of experience transforming Concord grapes into delicious and nutritious grape products. Today Welch s mission is to bring the goodness of its family-farmers grapes to more people and places and now they have a new way to deliver the taste and nutrition of Concord and Niagara grapes. FruitWorx takes Welch s special grapes outside the bottle for the first time. Versatility for a Variety of Foods and Beverages Today s consumers are looking for foods that are naturally wholesome inherently functional and tasty. Combining great taste and natural nutrition Concord grape-based products offer a great solution. In addition to concentrates and single strength juices Welch s offers a range of ingredients made with Concord grapes. FruitWorx are real fruit pieces made using a unique ultra-rapid concentration process to deliver the goodness of Welch s own Concord and Niagara grapes in a versatile new ingredient. FruitWorx are delicious on their own and easy for manufacturers to use in snack bars baked goods convenient snacks and a multitude of innovations. Nutrition Industry Executive 81 Grape Goodness Comes From Where it s Grown The natural goodness of Welch s juices and other grape-based products is a result of where the Concord grape is grown. Unlike many other grapes Concord grapes thrive in harsh growing conditions. Because of the special conditions needed you ll find Welch s Concord grape vineyards in particular microclimates in New York Pennsylvania Ohio Michigan Washington and Ontario Canada. Diehl discovered cetyl myristoleate in 1964 but as a chemist he did not know about marketing dietary supplements. While he received two patents on his discovery of CMO one in 1977 and another in 1996 he did not bring the product onto the national health food market himself. Instead he asked his daughter Elaine Diehl Parrish to form a company for that purpose. EHP Products was incorporated in 1995 to fulfill Diehl s dream of making his great discovery available to anyone who wanted it. EHP s first sales of cetyl myristoleate were in June 1996 and the company is now into its twentieth year of cetyl myristoleate sales. Today EHP Products offers a premier specialty line of CMO products. EHP is proud to be the only marketer of 40 percent CMO oil for soft gels lotion cream and liquids manufacturers and to health food stores and physicians in the form of soft gels. EHP s trademarked name for its CMO products is Myristin. Myristin soft gels contain 650 mg of cetylated fatty acids and 260 mg of molecular CMO the most by far of any CMO product available for health food store sales. Myristin soft gels can be accompanied by two companion products Myrist-Aid and Myristin Topical CMO Cream. Myrist-Aid is a glucosamine MSM formulation that also contains lecithin and lipase to help with digestion and absorption of CMO. With 5 percent CMO Myristin Topical Cream contains the most CMO of any cream on the market. The smooth formulation of Myristin Topical Cream in a liposomal base has 0.95 percent menthol. For veterinary care EHP offers a flavored chewable tablet with CMO and glucosamine MSM formulation. Other CMO products available from EHP are bulk quantities of 40 percent CMO wax 28 percent CMO in olive oil 20 percent CMO powder 10 percent CMO powder and a completely vegetable source 15 percent CMO wax. EHP also offers its 260 mg molecular CMO soft gels and 110 mg CMO powder capsules in small or bulk quantities. As the company observes the 20th anniversary of EHP Products as a worldwide distributor of cetyl myristoleate EHP gratefully acknowledges the contributions of Diehl to the health food industry through his discovery of cetyl myristoleate. Diehl was employed by the National Institute of Arthritis Metabolic and Digestive Diseases in the Laboratory of Chemistry for 40 years. He discovered more than 500 compounds including one used by Dr. Salk in developing his polio vaccine. Diehl died after a short illness in Charlottesville VA on December 22 1999 at the age of 89. He continued to work on cetyl myristoleate and similar compounds up until the time of his death. He was a tower of strength and he left behind a legacy of hope. GW Dryer GW Dryer by California-based G3 Enterprises Inc. is a new technology that uses water to dry. The process takes advantage of the superior heat conduction properties of water to gently dry a variety of raw ingredients in less than five minutes into tiny all-natural crystal powders that retain superior color flavor and nutrients. With no or little use of carriers it is the ideal drying technology for high-value natural food ingredients. The high-value natural food ingredient to be dried is blended into a liquid or puree and evenly applied on a moving food grade belt. The new FEC40 Capsule Filler has an output volume of up to 400 000 capsules per hour nearly twice the production capacity of any other capsule filler on the market. The FEC40 accomplishes this elevated production bar in a remarkable small footprint making machine reconfiguration due to floor space issues unnecessary. The extraordinarily high ratio of performance-to-footprint is made possible by Fette Compacting s patented Duplex Concept which enables the FEC40 to feature a dual capsule filling process. The FEC40 is available in two configurations and users can choose between two tamping pin stations and up to four pellet stations. Changes between tamping pin stations are made with the aid of a patented assembly system making it possible to swiftly change between various dosing methods as well as between various products or batches. Thanks to this user-friendly assembly system the stations can be dismantled and cleaned outside the machine thereby significantly reducing standard conversion and cleaning times. Where additional pre-fitted filling stations are used the FEC40 is ready for operation following very brief periods of downtime. The process leads to very stable product parameters such as water activity brix viscosity texture color and flavor as well as low levels of wastage. The resulting product offers high functionality versatility and the ability to be customized according to the customer s own requirements. We extract most of the moisture from the fruit which results in a very low water activity so that FruitWorx inclusions are perfect for use in dry long shelf-life applications.
