Many food packages in the state have been labeled often in tiny print with the words may contain genetically engineered ingredients or something to that effect. Meanwhile shenanigans have been taking place in Washington D.C. and I m not referring to the presidential race. I ve been following the most recent updates on the GMO label bill. On July 6 members of the Organic Consumers Association threw money-- 2 000 it s been reported--from the Senate gallery onto the floor to protest a procedural vote to advance the GMO label compromise a revised version of the failed DARK Act in the Senate. In June Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee announced that she had reached an agreement with Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) the committee s chairman on the GMO bill. She called the legislation a win for families farmers and food producers and said it would establish a national mandatory system of disclosure for food that contains GMO ingredients. The agreement would require the agriculture secretary to create within two years a national mandatory disclosure standard for food that contains GMOs. Backers of the bill said it would close loopholes created by the Vermont labeling law that allowed processed food products like frozen dinners or entrees that contain meat and GMO ingredients to go unlabeled. But opponents said the Senate bill gives the food industry too much leeway in deciding how consumers should be informed. And there lies the real shenanigans The bill allows producers to put a telephone A number for consumers to dial or a QR (quick response) code that can be scanned with a smartphone on product labels to find out if the product contains GMO s-- because who doesn t scan QR codes or call manufacturers for product information when they are shopping at the grocery store Karen Howard CEO and executive director Organic & Natural Health Association said the bill redefines what constitutes genetically engineered omitting large classes of GMO products including oils sugars and starches with the potential to exempt virtually all GMO foods from coverage. Second she noted it does not mandate labeling of GMOs across all 50 states. The manufacturer is provided with three choices none of which requires words declaring something is genetically engineered. In addition The bill fails to address what was once the biggest objection Big Food had to Vermont s mandatory labeling law the belief new labeling criteria will drastically increase the cost of food for consumers she said. The primary goal of this bill remains nullification of Vermont s existing labeling statute and superseding each state s right to enact GMO labeling laws. Are GMOs the biggest threat to our health and food supply I doubt it. Will people stop buying a favorite product that they ve been purchasing because of a Vermont-style GMO disclosure I m not sure. However people have a right to know what is in the food they eat. Proponents of the technology say GMOs and other science-based innovations are safe and bring benefits to the farm the store and the table. If so then why not label these products proudly and clearly The Senate is moving quickly on the bill and it will likely be on its way back to the House by the time this magazine goes to press. But in its present form it s very weak indeed--this is a bill that needs more work. The online product registry will include full label information for dietary supplements and be accessible via the web. The agreement between CRN and UL calls for the registry to go into an immediate development stage with beta testing to occur this summer and is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. According to CRN President and CEO Steve Mister We spoke with a number of very capable companies for this important project but UL best fit the bill because of its broad knowledge of the supplement industry its technical prowess and its brand recognition for consumer safety. Mister noted that UL is already well known by the dietary supplement industry and trusted by retailers who use the com- T pany s Prospector database a free service that provides manufacturers with technical data and safety information about the materials and ingredients used in consumer and industrial products from food and personal care products to household cleaners paints and adhesives. However recent consumer and market data doesn t support this assumption. Instead data from the end of 2015 and early 2016 suggests that consumer confidence in herbal dietary supplements continues to increase. This initial data is not conclusive and more time and data are needed to accurately assess the full impact of 2015 on consumer confidence but the initial data is promising for the industry. At AHPA s (American Herbal Product Association) Annual Member Meeting Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) President Maryellen Molyneaux noted that herbs and botanicals are a bright spot in the supplement industry. These deficiencies may be involved in patients who experience migraines but that is unclear based on existing studies. Further studies are needed to elucidate whether vitamin supplementation is effective in migraine patients in general and whether patients with mild deficiency are more likely to benefit from supplementation said Suzanne Hagler MD a Headache Medicine fellow in the division of Neurology at Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center and lead author of the study. Hagler and colleagues at Cincinnati Children s conducted the study among patients at the Cincinnati Children s Headache Center. Hagler presented her findings at the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society in San Diego CA. Hagler s study drew from a database that included patients with migraines who according to Headache Center practice had baseline blood levels checked for vitamin D riboflavin coenzyme Q10 and folate all of which were implicated in migraines to some degree by previous and sometimes conflicting studies. Many were put on preventive migraine medications and received vitamin supplementation if levels were low. Because few received vitamins alone the researchers were unable to determine vitamin effectiveness in preventing migraines. She found that girls and young woman were more likely than boys and young men to have coenzyme Q10 deficiencies at baseline. Boys and young men were more likely to have vitamin D deficiency. It was unclear whether there were folate deficiencies. Patients with chronic migraines were more likely to have coenzyme Q10 and riboflavin deficiencies than those with episodic migraines. Previous studies have indicated that certain vitamins and vitamin deficiencies may be important in the migraine process. Proper Maternal Folate Level May Reduce Child Obesity Risk P roper maternal folate levels during pregnancy may protect children from a future risk of obesity especially those born to obese mothers according to a study led by researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study published online in JAMA Pediatrics was funded by NIH s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Obesity in children and adults is a serious health issue in the U.S. contributing to such conditions as heart disease stroke and type 2 diabetes. During pregnancy maternal obesity also increases the risk for a range of pregnancy complications such as stillbirth birth defects and preterm birth. Furthermore babies born to obese mothers have long-term health risks including a higher risk of obesity in childhood. Folate an essential B vitamin reduces the fetus risk for neural tube defects which are malformations affecting the brain spine and spinal cord. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women of childbearing age take 400 micrograms of folic acid (a synthetic form of folate) daily to reduce their children s risk for neural tube defects. However the role of mater34 Nutrition Industry Executive nal folate levels on a child s future obesity risk was not known especially among those born to mothers who are obese during pregnancy. In their study the researchers investigated the health outcomes of mothers and children (ranging from 2 to 9 years old) in the Boston Birth Cohort a predominately low-income minority population with a high prevalence of maternal and child obesity. The study team analyzed health records from more than 1 500 mother-child pairs including information that was collected before during and after pregnancy. To gauge a mother s folate level during pregnancy the researchers measured folate from stored plasma samples that were collected two to three days after delivery. The study team found a wide range of maternal folate levels but observed an L-shaped relationship between maternal folate levels and child obesity. In other words the lowest levels of folate correlated with the highest risk of child obesity. When folate levels reached approximately 20 nm L which is within the normal range for adults further increases in folate levels did not confer additional benefits indicating a threshold or ceiling effect. According to the researchers this threshold is higher than the standard cutoff for diagnosing folate deficiency (less than 10 nm L). Obese mothers in the study tended to have lower folate levels than normal weight mothers. However when the researchers examined obese mothers only they found that children of obese mothers with adequate folate levels (at least 20 nm L) had a 43 percent lower risk of obesity compared to children of obese mothers with lower folate (less than 20 nm L). The children in the latter group had higher body mass index-forage z-scores (BMI-z)--a measure of body fat in children. According to the authors establishing an optimal rather than minimal folate concentration may be beneficial for women planning a pregnancy especially obese women. It also might depend on whether or not the product is simply a new iteration of a previous product a form of continuous innovation and clearly such a product has a better chance than most of surviving for an extended period of time. Whatever the situation it follows that the marketing budget at this stage should be at its highest level since communicating on a large scale is a rather expensive endeavor. Multiple advertising impressions over time are generally required to make consumers remember the product and move them to action. Marketers generally prefer an integrated marketing communications strategy applied across multiple media and this costs money. Deaton pointed out that there are four types of free radicals and until recently research has mainly focused on the hydroxyl variety. In fact the ORAC value has been a widely recognized indicator of antioxidant potency for many years he said. The ORAC method essentially uses a specific antioxidant component of vitamin E as the standard for comparison. The drawback in using this method exclusively is that this component of vitamin E is only one type of antioxidant. It s important to know that just because an ingredient doesn t correlate with the properties of vitamin E it doesn t mean it s low in antioxidant potency. Furthermore there is no evidence that ORAC values have any biological significance following consumption of any food Deaton said. This test is also somewhat limiting as other tissues can be tested.
