Until that one day of the year comes where for two minutes the weather is perfect we ve collected a series of short stories and poetry guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Cats high on catnip children who eat without screaming and throwing their food and husbands who figure out how to open the dishwasher and add dishes to it these are all things that make A. Marie smile. LeeAnn enjoyed the Summer of Fun with her son and husband. There were trips to the beach trips to visit family play dates and attempts at growing container pumpkins (don t ask). There was a birthday party with a dinosaur volcano cake and the completion of a three-year long project. We are looking forward to a new remodeling project the holidays and the new school year. So whatever makes you smile and giggle whether it s home cooking (Joy of Cooking) nostalgic memories (The Bonds of Fraternity Run Strong) or learning a new language (Carrots) we hope you will enjoy these delightful stories and poems. That s important to establish right away. It was Friday night we were three fraternity brothers at Florida State University we were outside our favorite bar and we were very very drunk. The bar is no longer there our fraternity house is no longer there and of course we re no longer there. This all seems very long ago now as indeed it was. Before smart phones before cell phones even. Heck the personal computer was still in its infancy then. Daniel LeBoeuf s story The Bonds of Fraternity Run Strong is a hysterical story of young men having too good a time. Like rocks that fly. And the very bluest of ice. How it reflects a sun drowning in its own dawn. Because something is dying because something is awakening to its last agony because something is murmuring softly into its own blood. A red-orange yolk that s readying itself for ending. Jody Azzouni s story Dreaming of Ragnarok is a poetic narrative of dreaming. It is a dream of being a part of nature being Odin the god of nature of shape-shifting of becoming and un-becoming. My Overdue Confession By James Stafford You just have to look at the facts I said. Matt didn t even look up from our frog. The only fact is that it sucks and nobody cares about it. The frog didn t say anything. He was pinned to a board limbs splayed like a Froghouse centerfold. Whether it s good or bad is irrelevant I countered. What matters is that it is conceptually cohesive. James Stafford s nonfiction story My Overdue Confession is a delightful conversation over a dissection. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. SOMA Vamp By Catherine Tripp She wants to die spectacularly suddenly explosively with bits of Beulah stuck in the hair of gawkers and bystanders. Or grasp the life immortal laid out so enticingly in Twilight and True Blood. She loved Anne Rice s book Interview with a Vampire and really loved the movie. A warm decadence made up of handsome men with hair that never falls out pony tails and puffy shirts and that pale pale luminosity - dead sexy with ice blue eyes against a background of white like the yummy LeStat de Lioncourt the thousand year old vampire being interviewed. Catherine Tripp s story SOMA Vamp is a new and entertaining new look at vampires. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Order a single issue or annual subscription print or digital. At the Counter By Toti O Brien This is what happens when the pizza you want is over but they tell you a huge batch is coming out of the oven. Can you wait It will be ready in five minutes. Well not really five and you know it--still the smell is so good so inebriating you nod your approval. Then you push a bit on the side. You lean sideways elbow over the counter cheek on your closed fist. It s the end of the day and you re tired so tired you can t afford cooking dinner. You re darn hungry as well. Toti O Brien s story At the Counter is a humorous true story of a chance meeting over pizza that could have turned out awkwardly.. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Whitney and her husband Jimmy have relocated to the beautiful Pacific Northwest to raise their children chickens and organic vegetables. Laughing Out Loud with Whitney P&D What did you study at the University of Illinois Whitney I studied art history. I may have minored in quarter beers on Thursday nights. P&D On your website you state that you first worked as a model. What experiences as a model helped you with your writing career Whitney The only way modeling helped my writing career was to afford me a plethora of hours to read while shooting on location. Reading so many books made writing them inevitable. P&D Did you write prior to your modeling career Whitney Before modeling I was in college so the only writing I did was for school. I modeled for twenty years but started writing during that time as an online food editor for a now defunct magazine. P&D What did you write first middle grade fiction or romantic comedies Whitney I started with rom com because I heart them so much. P&D Of the two genres mentioned above is there one you prefer writing over the other Whitney I love them both. It just depends what mood I m in. I have two young daughters and I think of them when I m writing my middle-reader series. I want to create wonderful book friends for them. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Harvey Levin Can t Die By Noreen Lace I woke up on a Thursday morning and there were no more Kardasians on TV. The news didn t mention Lindsey Brittany or any housewives from anywhere. It was as if they d never existed and I wondered momentarily as I swept through the channels with careless ease if I d awakened in an alternate universe. There played no more E or TMZ or even Doctor Oz. Maybe it was just Thursday maybe Friday would be different. In each issue of Pilcrow & Dagger one story is chosen to be read as a podcast. In this issue we chose Harvey Levin Can t Die by Noreen Lace. This is quite the funny story sure to put a smile on your face. Take a few minutes to listen and enjoy. Mexican Night By Kim Bailey Deal Back when my kids were little we had a lot of fun with all of their antics and discoveries. We lived in Bartlesville Oklahoma. Just seventeen miles south of the Kansas state line and about forty-five miles north of Tulsa we were situated in an active area dubbed as Tornado Alley. Having moved there from Florida at age eighteen I had to learn the culture of Oklahoma. Everything from the body language of and proper communication with the Native Americans and Pioneer stock I met and befriended to how to survive tornado season. Sometimes the latter was a lot easier to manage. Kim Bailey Deal s nonfiction story Mexican Night is a funny vignette of a simple family dinner and a show turning into a night to remember. She lived in a small city on the island of Shikoku the smallest of the four main Japanese islands. She taught English at a private conversation school. She loved her job and she loved Japan. She loved Japanese culture. She was doing her best to assimilate herself into it. She took an ikebana class on Thursday evenings at the community center near her apartment and made a great effort to convince herself that she didn t mind when the instructor changed her arrangement every week. She took Japanese language lessons twice a week once at an expensive private conversation school once at the community center for a nominal fee. Jeff Nazzaro writes a wonderful story Carrots highlighting the humor and discomfort of learning a new language and customs. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. Avoiding Bankruptcy In Which I Try to Find Dental Treatment in the U.S. By Kate Howard Albuquerque population 500 000 people half of whom seem to be dentists... if you believe the yellow pages. So it can t be that difficult to find a good one at a reasonable price you would think. Think again. The first question is how to choose among so many. It is not clear from the list what their specialities might be. Perhaps toothpaste for toddlers or dentures for dogs I consider sticking a pin in the list and trusting to luck. They are probably all qualified and may even be experienced so how could I go wrong Kate Howard s nonfiction story Avoiding Bankruptcy In Which I Try to Find Dental treatment in the U.S. is a hysterical story about the search for an affordable dentist. Pertaining to the Ever After By Winnie Khaw BRIEF IRRELEVANT NOTES on salient and otherwise completely random persons both real and imagined in the history of the long-lived (estimated since 1985) Darwin Awards regrettably recipients of this prestigious competition cannot lay claim to said longevity as they expire shortly before being named the winners. Winnie Khaw s essay Pertaining to the Ever After is a romp through the ever-funny Darwin Awards and the recipients thereof. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions. But it was always like this and he had no desire to beg for their attention. That didn t make for very good leadership. After a few minutes or so everyone would inevitably calm down a bit and the monthly committee gathering would be able to start. That s how these sorts of things always were anyway. He looked around the church basement at the crowd of faces loudly talking to each other it looked like the number was higher than last time which was odd because most people didn t care about meetings like these. They ve told him many times that they had more important things to be doing. As he predicted they went quiet in about five minutes and Slim Jack stood up behind the wooden podium. Joey Hedger s story A Brave New World That Thing Called Panhandling Is is a humorous look at how the world is ever changing. To read more go to www.pilcrowdagger.com subscriptions.
