Many food packages in the state had been labeled often in tiny print with the words may contain genetically engineered ingredients or something to that effect. A month earlier in Washington D.C. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee announced that she had reached an agreement with Sen. Pat Roberts RKS the committee s chairman on the GMO bill. She called the legislation a win for families farmers and food producers and said it would establish a national mandatory system of disclosure for food that contains GMO ingredients. Backers of the bill said it would close loopholes created by the Vermont labeling law that allowed processed food products such as frozen dinners or entrees that contain meat and GMO ingredients to go unlabeled. Opponents said it gives the food industry too much leeway in deciding how consumers should be informed. Apparently the president agreed with Sen. Stabenow and Sen. Roberts and by July 29 the bill was signed into law. Now the Agriculture Secretary is required to create within two years a national mandatory disclosure standard for food that contains GMOs. According to the bill producers could put a telephone number for consumers to dial or a QR (quick response) code on product labels that can be scanned with a smart- I phone to find out if the product contains GMOs. Or they can just put the words on the product label as was required in Vermont. Gary Hirshberg chairman of Just Label It and Stonyfield Farm said food companies should commit to keeping clear and simple GMO labels on their products even as USDA develops labeling rules under the law. In the wake of the creation of a national mandatory labeling system he noted Campbell s Mars and Dannon have already publicly committed to keeping this simple disclosure on the packages as USDA sorts out the rules for implementation of this new law. I have sent a letter to other industry leaders asking them to publicly commit to keeping consumers out of the dark when it comes to GMOs in our food. According to an Annenberg Science Knowledge survey conducted just after the president s signing a plurality of Americans say it s either somewhat or highly unlikely they d use their smartphone to find out if a product contains genetically modified ingredients. That s for those who have the luxury of owning a smartphone. Those who do not--often the elderly and low-income people--would just be out of luck. Are GMOs the biggest threat to our health and food supply I doubt it. Will people stop buying a favorite product that they ve been purchasing because of a Vermont-style GMO disclosure Maybe some. However all people have a right to know what is in the food they eat. Who can blame the person-- up until recently that s how they ve been sold. Probiotics which are live bacteria and yeasts that help the digestive system have two common types lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. Both can be found in select foods such as yogurt cheese and other dairy products but oftentimes this is not sufficient enough to meet the body s need to replenish itself of good bacteria. Probiotic supplements have helped fill the void. However the game has changed. Now more manufacturers are beginning to produce functional foods and beverages--food products that provide health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value according to MerriamWebster s Dictionary--that contain probiotics. W BY NICHOLAS SARACENO Probiotic Advantages Over the years probiotics have been used to prevent diarrhea gas and cramping caused by antibiotics. They have also been acknowledged for aiding the immune system. With the upside presented by this supplement now being combined with everyday products the possibilities seem limitless. Not all probiotics are created equal however the functionality and benefits vary depending on the type of food containing the bacteria shelf life stored temperature and more noted Bill Moses co-founder and CEO of California-based KeVita. The shelf life of a product is just as important as any other factor being that it refers to how long an item can be stored until it is no longer deemed safe to consume. According to Euromonitor healthy food product sales are predicted 10 VITAMIN RETAILER to reach 1 trillion which can lead many to believe that it s partially attributed to this exact reason. Ohio-based Ganeden an ingredient supplier that creates probiotics that are currently being utilized in food has been able to use this concept to its advantage. Previously consumers were limited in ways to consume probiotics usually through refrigerated dairy or in pill form said Mike Bush president of Ganeden and executive board president of the International Probiotics Association. This made it difficult for consumers with diet restrictions and for many who experience pill fatigue. Ganeden found a solution with its patented probiotic strain GanedenBC30. The probiotic can survive through most manufacturing processes without requiring special technologies or changes--making it one of the only probiotics that can be used in food and beverages outside of the refrigerated dairy category. Its natural protective spore makes it highly stable and allows it to survive through manufacturing shelf life (up to three years) and the gastric acidity of the stomach creating endless opportunities to add it to almost any product. Probiotic Tonic has noticed a pattern in consumer preference. More people are making healthier choices like switching from soft drinks to low-sugar sparkling beverages noted Moses. People want to reap the optimum benefits from their simple day-today choices--therefore they are evaluating sugar calories vitamins minerals and most importantly probiotics. We ve noticed a consumer shift from supplements to functional beverages and foods that can and will validate their decision based on usefulness taste and affordability. Furthermore the fact that many ordinary foods such as corn apples and milk now contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms) has also impacted many people s decisions when food shopping. Kristen Perschon manager of Vitamin Retailer s Retailer of the Year World of Nutrition in Idaho pointed out that the pesticides common in food production have resulted in not only a rise in inflammatory-related diseases but an increase in chronic digestive issues as well. Essentially some consumers who may have initially been skeptical of taking probiotics have gained interest due to the complications that resulted in doing otherwise. Technology Simply put the concept of probiotics being found in functional foods could not be possible without the spore-forming bacteria being able to survive higher heat from pasteurization as stated by Matt McLean founder and CEO of Florida-based Uncle Matt s Organic. Such technology has set the bar for future food innovations to come. Consumers will continue to expect greater benefits which will require additional oversight from scientists and manufacturers. As Michel Sirgent probiotic supplement manufacturer Bio-K (Laval QC Canada) vice president U.S. sales stated The challenge with probiotic fortified functional foods is that very few if any guarantee specific well-characterized probiotic strains nor do they guarantee survival and gut colonization to ensure the health benefits associated to probiotics. On a related note it is important to know that how a probiotic is manufactured has a great impact on its behavior and ability to deliver health benefits. VR Gaining Popularity Today people have become fully aware of the health risks that products especially soft drinks and processed foods present. Many contain high amounts of not only sugar but also artificial flavoring neither of which benefits the body in a positive way. This database will be a free online tool for NPA members to view violations against the dietary supplement good manufacturing practices (GMPs) which are deemed as technical adulterations by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) dietary supplement labeling regulation and making unauthorized health claims on products labels and in labeling. Regulatory compliance and QA QC (quality assurance quality control) personnel of dietary supplement manufacturing facilities own label distributors companies and retailers can use this information to monitor and track the top GMP violations by year and see how those trends are changing. The database will also allow end users to create their own reports. T According to NPA CEO and Executive Director Dr. Daniel Fabricant NPA is proud to announce a database for the industry that is more than just warning letters. It differentiates itself by capturing enforcement actions from various agencies. While it is searchable in many different ways you would think a warning letter database would be it is also being designed to search disease claims claim categories and allow for customized reports by member end users. The database is also beneficial for those responsible for labeling compliance to avoid the introduction of misbranded products into interstate commerce and those marketing with claims. The database also tracks enforcement actions taken by various agencies against companies. The database contains more than 440 warning letters that have been publicly released by the FDA in addition to the enforcement actions taken by the DOJ (Department of Justice) FDA and FTC (Federal Trade Commission) since 2008. It is searchable by company name product name issue date regulation disease claims claim category and FDA action taken. The comprehensive database is also a valuable tool not only for dietary supplement manufacturers but retailers or consumers who want to see if FDA has found any issues with a company s GMPs before purchasing their products. NPA Seeks Vitamin Inclusion in WIC Program n July Natural Products Association (NPA) submitted comments to the Institute of Medicine advocating for expanding access to vitamins for low-income mothers and children. The NPA submitted its comments as part of a Congressionally mandated study that will examine the impact of expanding the supplemental nutrition program for women infants and children (WIC) to cover certain vitamin and mineral products. Programs like WIC are a critical benefit for millions of families and there s no reason why we shouldn t look for ways to expand the program because every child in our community and across the country deserves the same opportunity at a healthy and successful life regardless of income said Daniel Fabricant PhD executive director and CEO of NPA. NPA urges the Institute of Medicine to consider including multivitamin supplements under the WIC program. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently released a study concluding that Americans in or near poverty are not improving their diets as quickly as more affluent Americans. The percentage of lower income Americans with poor diets declined from 68 percent in 2003 and 2004 to 61 percent in 2011 and 2012. For more affluent Americans the rate declined from 50 percent to 36 percent. The NPA also requested that the period for evaluation of foods made eligible to WIC participants be made more frequent than once every 10 years. For more information please visit www.npainfo.org. In fact iodine is now I recognized as a nutrient so critical to the cognitive development of the baby during pregnancy that CRN recently developed guidelines urging the dietary supplement industry to ensure that prenatal multivitamins contain at least 150 mcg of iodine daily. MacKay continued We know that Americans are not getting all the nutrients they need from food alone. So while it s ideal to strive to get the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of key nutrients from diet only realistically there will be shortfalls and dietary supplements fill those gaps. Pregnancy is no time to gamble. The alarming headlines that issued after this report published could lead to serious repercussions. We hope that other health organizations and health care practitioners will step up and speak out against the irresponsible nature of this report in order to protect the health of our pregnant population. Herbalife International Inc. and Herbalife Ltd. have agreed to fully restructure their U.S. business operations and pay 200 million to compensate consumers to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that the companies deceived consumers into believing they could earn substantial money selling diet nutritional supplement and personal care products. In its complaint against Herbalife (Los Angeles CA) FTC also charged that the multi-level marketing company s compensation structure was unfair because it rewards distributors for recruiting others to H join and purchase products in order to advance in the marketing program rather than in response to actual retail demand for the product causing substantial economic injury to many of its distributors. According to the FTC s complaint Herbalife claims that people who participate can expect to quit their jobs earn thousands of dollars a month make a career-level income or even get rich. But the truth as alleged in the FTC complaint is that the overwhelming majority of distributors who pursue the business opportunity earn little or no money. The settlement announced on July 15 requires Herbalife to revamp its compensation system so that it rewards retail sales to customers and eliminates the incentives in its current system that reward distributors primarily for recruiting. In addition the order imposes a 200 million judgment against Herbalife to provide consumer redress including money for consumers who purchased large quantities of Herbalife products and lost money. Information on the FTC s redress program will be announced at a later date. Clinical Study Shows that Ester-C Stays in the Body Longer new clinical study conducted by New York-based NBTY demonstrated that Ester-C a patented form of vitamin C stays in immune cells longer than regular vitamin C (ascorbic acid) currently on the market. The study published in SpringerPlus reports that Ester-C significantly increases vitamin C concentrations in white blood cells (leukocytes cell of the immune system) up to 24 hours following a single oral administration of 1 000 mg of vitamin C. This is the first clinical trial comparing vitamin C retention in leukocytes between Ester-C and ascorbic acid in both male and female nonsmokers. In this double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial 30 healthy subjects aged 18 60 years were randomized to receive placebo (0 mg vitamin C) ascorbic acid (1000 mg vitamin C) and Ester-C (1000 mg vitamin C) each preceded by a seven-day washout period. We are optimistic that the report will encourage the federal government to remove economic impediments that keep Puerto Ricans from enjoying the extensive health benefits of dietary supplements and other natural products. AO 346 created new barriers to retailers and distributors of natural products in Puerto Rico imposing new fees and unnecessary regulations that make it difficult for these products to reach stores in Puerto Rico. With millions of Puerto Ricans utilizing natural supplements the Order threatens both personal and economic health for those on the island. NPA and its congressional allies including Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) urged the Task Force to include AO 346 in its investigations and successfully worked to include it in the Task Force s directives in PROMESA. The bipartisan task force includes notable members of both parties and both chambers and they are now requesting input from both public and private stakeholders. In a joint statement they said they desire any insights that experts can provide to identify what reforms are needed to grow the Puerto Rican economy and promote prosperity on the island. The Task Force accepted stakeholder input through September 2 and will issue a report on Puerto Rico s economic status and recommendations going forward by December 31 2016. According to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Practice this approach may be unwarranted given the high rate of false-positive test results and low risk of food allergy in siblings. Our data suggests that the risk of food allergy in siblings of an affected child is only minimally higher than in the general population said lead author Ruchi Gupta MD MPH pediatrician and researcher at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago and associate professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. We also observed that testing might show sensitization to peanuts in a child who has never had peanuts for example but F that might not mean that eating a peanut will provoke allergic symptoms in that child. The study found that the majority (53 percent) of siblings of food allergic children showed food sensitization with testing but did not experience food allergy symptoms. An additional onethird of siblings tested negative and had no allergic reactions to food while only 13.6 percent of siblings had a true food allergy. Our findings help support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases practice guidelines to not screen siblings before the child s initial exposure to a food said Gupta. Routine screening without a history of allergic food reactions might lead to unnecessary food avoidance in kids who can actually tolerate that food which impacts quality of life and nutrition. Food avoidance also increases the risk of developing an allergy to that food. A total of 1 120 children participated in the study including food allergic kids and their biological siblings. Food allergy status was determined by applying a set of stringent clinical criteria to data gathered from a questionnaire-based interview as well as results of specific IgE blood test and skin prick testing. Proper Maternal Folate Level May Reduce Child Obesity Risk P roper maternal folate levels during pregnancy may protect children from a future risk of obesity especially those born to obese mothers according to a study led by researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study published online in JAMA Pediatrics was funded by NIH s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Obesity in children and adults is a serious health issue in the U.S. contributing to such conditions as heart disease stroke and type 2 diabetes. During pregnancy maternal obesity also increases the risk for a range of pregnancy complications such as stillbirth birth defects and preterm birth. Furthermore babies born to obese mothers have long-term health risks including a higher risk of obesity in childhood. Folate an essential B vitamin reduces the fetus risk for neural tube defects which are malformations affecting the brain spine and spinal cord. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women of childbearing age take 400 micrograms of folic acid (a synthetic form of folate) daily to reduce their children s risk for neural tube defects. However the role of maternal folate levels on a child s future obesity risk was not known especially among those born to mothers who are obese during pregnancy. In their study the researchers investigated the health outcomes of mothers and children (ranging from 2- to 9years-old) in the Boston Birth Cohort a predominately low-income minority population with a high prevalence of maternal and child obesity. The study team analyzed health records from more than 1 500 mother-child pairs including information that was collected before during and after pregnancy. To gauge a mother s folate level during pregnancy the researchers measured folate from stored plasma samples that were collected two to three days after delivery. The study team found a wide range of maternal folate levels but observed an L-shaped relationship between maternal folate levels and child obesity. In other words the lowest levels of folate correlated with the highest risk of child obesity. When folate levels reached approximately 20 nm L which is within the normal range for adults further increases in folate levels did not confer additional benefits indicat- ing a threshold or ceiling effect. According to the researchers this threshold is higher than the standard cutoff for diagnosing folate deficiency (less than 10 nm L). Obese mothers in the study tended to have lower folate levels than normal weight mothers. However when the researchers examined obese mothers only they found that children of obese mothers with adequate folate levels (at least 20 nm L) had a 43 percent lower risk of obesity compared to children of obese mothers with lower folate (less than 20 nm L). The children in the latter group had higher body mass index-for-age z-scores (BMI-z)--a measure of body fat in children. According to the authors establishing an optimal rather than minimal folate concentration may be beneficial for women planning a pregnancy especially obese women. These include Facebook Twitter Tumblr Instagram Snapchat YouTube and Pinterest. Personal blog sites can also fall within this category. Many companies large and small have found social media to be a new and inventive tool to communicate with their consumers. Social media can be great but if you use it it is critical to understand that regulators view social media as a new form of advertising entitled to no special status or protection. Even if you do not fully understand social media the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have indicated that they do and are actively monitoring how it is being for advertising and product 30 VITAMIN RETAILER W hat is social media Something that your kids seem absolutely addicted to but that you have no understanding of or interest promotion. As an example the pharmaceutical company Duchesnay Inc. received an FDA warning letter (www.fda.gov downloads drugs guidancecomplianceregulatoryinformation enforcementactivitiesbyfda w arninglettersandnoticeofviolationletterstopharmaceuticalcompanies ucm457961.p df) after Kim Kardashian a compensated endorser took to Instagram and Facebook to tout how the prescription drug DICLEGIS helped with her morning sickness but omitted any risk information and other material facts. As stated in the warning letter The social media post however entirely omits all risk information. We note the statement [F]ind out more www.diclegis.com ww.diclegisImportantsafetyinfo.com[ ] appears at the end of the social media post however this does not mitigate the misleading omission of risk information. By omitting the risks associated with DICLEGIS the social media post misleadingly fails to provide material information about the consequences that may result from the use of the drug and suggests that it is safer than has been demonstrated. The FDA further objected to the fact that Kardashian s posts also omitted important information concerning limitations on the use of the product for certain women. The matter appears to have been resolved with some corrective social media advertising on the part of Kardashian. If the information being presented in the social media is obviously coming directly from the company such as on a company Facebook or Twitter site then for the most part the traditional rules generally applicable to all advertising apply. As advertising the FTC requires that the information presented be truthful non-misleading and adequately substantiated. In the area of dietary supplements FDA is not only reviewing company websites but also as evidenced by numerous recent warning letters citing companies for claims made on their Facebook Twitter and other social media sites. If a company cannot make a disease claim about its product on its WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com mercola for info about this advertiser RETAILFUNDAMENTALS label or the company website there is no reason to believe that such claims would somehow be acceptable on a company controlled social media site. Moreover there is an obligation for companies to monitor the social media sites under their control and scrub improper information that may be posted by consumers. It should be intuitive that a site controlled by a company that markets dietary supplements cannot be permitted to become a discussion place for how the company s products can be used to treat or cure diseases. For example in an October 2015 warning letter to MPH Nutrition LLC (Chicago IL) concerning the marketing of Omega-3 with alleged therapeutic claims establish[ing] that the product is a drug because it is intended for use in the cure mitigation treatment or prevention of disease FDA stated your Facebook page also contains evidence of intended use in the form of personal testimonials recommending or describing the use of products for the cure mitigation treatment or prevention of disease. The following is an example of such testimonial which is endorsed or promoted by your firm Your firm liked the following visitor post dated July 27 2015 For years I have been told that my brain will not heal and that I will be forced to deal with the lasting effects of my concussions. Where the regulation of social media becomes truly interesting is on sites where there is no obvious company affiliation. In addition to substantiation issues the FTC has focused on the need for adequate disclosures of any potential relationship between the endorser and the company. For example imagine being on a social media site with no obvious affiliation to any company reading posts or viewing videos and seeing a favorable review of a new product. Would it influence your decision if you knew that the poster worked for the company that sold the product or had been paid or received other compensation to tout the product Would such information affect how you perceived the review 32 VITAMIN RETAILER According to FTC if there is a connection between the endorser and the marketer of the product that would not be obvious to consumers and could affect how the endorsement may be viewed then the connection must be clearly disclosed. An endorser who is related to people at the company does business with the company or is an actual employee of the marketer may be expected to have some bias in their review. To allow the potential for bias to be considered by consumers viewing the social media such connections must be clearly disclosed or the post is deemed misleading. If a company cannot make a disease claim about its product on its label or the company website there is no reason to believe that such claims would somehow be acceptable on a company controlled social media site. The FTC s Endorsement Guides What People Are Asking advises An endorsement must reflect the honest opinion of the endorser and can t be used to make a claim that the product s marketer couldn t legally make. www.ftc.gov tipsadvice business-center guidance ftcsendorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking when. Employee Policy Speaking of company employees this raises an additional issue which all companies would be wise to immediately address if they have not done so already. A policy should be created to address employee use of social media that references the company or any products that it markets. In this day and age and particularly in the dietary supplement marketplace having such a policy is critical and can be beneficial in defending an enforcement action. A company can choose to ban its employees from such discussions in social media or it can set clear limits and require specific disclosures. According to FTC if a company allows its employees to use social media to discuss products then the employee relationship must be disclosed--as part of the endorsement--not merely on the profile page where it may not be likely to be seen. It can also be misleading if the endorser has been paid or given something of value not just cash even a free sample to promote a product. Imagine being given a free product and asked to tweet about it of course you would be more likely to rave about its benefits. One of FTC s examples discusses travel websites. In planning a vacation and choosing a hotel many people scan consumer reviews. You do your research and find some glowing reviews. If you knew that the hotel had paid bloggers to write the reviews or had allowed them to stay at the hotel for free would that affect the weight that you would attribute to the review Of course it would. FTC has also indicated that providing rewards to encourage reviews on social media where material connections cannot be disclosed is discouraged (Richard Cleland assistant director FTC Division of Advertising Practices presentation at the CRN Regulatory Summit May 5 2016). Additionally both FTC and FDA are concerned with social media endorsements from people who achieved results beyond what could be expected by the typical user and beyond what the company can legitimately substantiate. For example even if an endorser actually lost a considerable amount of weight using the product if the marketer cannot substantiate the endorser s experience as being the typical result for most users then the endorsement must clearly describe what the expected results will be something that can be difficult with 140 Twitter characters. There are several examples of FTC enforcement concerning social media. In November 2011 in one of the first enforcement actions involving social media the FTC released a letter concerning a blogging campaign intended to build interest in ads that Hyundai Motor America was premiering during Super Bowl XLV. The FTC s concern was whether the bloggers involved in the campaign some of whom had been given gift certificates as an incentive to include Hyundai links in their posts were told to disclose that they had received compensation or were told not to. The FTC chose not to recommend enforcement after considering several factors including that Hyundai had not been informed of the use of the gift certificates WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalfactors for info about this advertiser RETAILFUNDAMENTALS which only some of the bloggers had received and that some had revealed the compensation. The reason that Hyundai had not been informed was that the actions had been taken by a media company and not Hyundai directly. Perhaps more importantly and one must remember that the FTC s position is that advertisers can be legally responsible for the actions of those working directly or indirectly for them such a PR and media companies is that the actions were the result of an individual who had violated Hyundai s established media policy that required bloggers to disclose compensation as well as the policies of the hired media company. Additionally when the issue was discovered the media company took prompt action. While one may think that Hyundai was lucky clearly having an established media policy in place was a very smart move. an article and post a picture of the paisley dress. The retailer reviewed and approved the Nylon article which it had paid for. Second Lord & Taylor recruited a team of 50 fashion influencers who were paid between 1 000 and 4 000 to post pictures of themselves in the dress on Instagram all during the same specified weekend. FTC s problem with the campaign was that there were absolutely no disclosures made by the company anywhere. FTC charged that the retailer had falsely represented that the 50 Instagram photos and captions were independent statements of impartial fashion influencers when they were all really part of a paid coordinated campaign. FTC also charged that while the Nylon article was presented in such a way as to make consumers believe that it reflected Nylon s independent opinion about the Design Lab it was really nothing more than paid advertising. Any paid ad that masquerades as an impartial article written by the host magazine violates FTC s guide concerning Native Advertising www.ftc.gov tips-advice businesscenter guidance native-advertising-guidebusinesses. In its Native Advertising Guidance FTC explains that online advertising must be clearly identified as advertising and cannot be formatted in a way to confusingly appear to be news feature articles product reviews entertainment or other non-advertising material. Such an attempt to fool consumers about the source of the material makes it false and misleading. Lord & Taylor settled with the FTC agreeing to be prohibited from claiming that an endorser is an independent user and is now required to disclose material connections and must monitor its influencers which includes obtaining written acknowledgements by said influencers of their duty to disclose any material connections. And since kids are often overprescribed antibiotics probiotics are very popular in his store. In fact in addition to vitamin D and liquid multiples probiotics are the most popular children s supplement. Jamie Morea co-founder of supplement maker Hyperbiotics in Nevada can t deny the importance of probiotics. Gut health begins at birth she said. With digestive probiotics the most important factor is that the bacteria are protected from stomach acids so that they arrive in the small and large intestine alive and can set up shop make their home and start supporting the health of the child. The reality is that most chewables powders and gummies simply cannot have this protection and the probiotics begin dying as soon as they enter the child s mouth. We decided to focus on an effective probiotic supplement with the hopes that it would also be wellreceived by children. And we succeeded According to Morea the PRO-Kids tablet is a tiny pearl that can be easily ingested whole or mixed with cold foods. PRO-Kids and PRO-Kids ENT probiotic formulas were developed to balance the flora both in children s digestive system and in their oral cavity. The balance of flora is critical to keeping them on the path of wellness said Morea. We also know that children are often either on a positive trajectory of optimal health or stuck in a vicious cycle of health habits that can be hard to break. PRO-Kids is patented in 31 countries and according to Morea it s the only controlled-release delivery available for probiotics on the market. She said In vitro lab testing shows that less than 4 percent of the probiotics in most chewables powders and capsules survive stomach acids to deliver any benefit. However there is a downside--artificial ingredients artificial flavors and sugar like in gummy vitamins Morea pointed out. Children are often used to sweet treats like candy which is the reason so many children s supplements are colored flavored and have added sugars she said. These ingredients may not be in the best interest of the child but it often does entice them to take their vitamins on a daily basis. So even though the demand for probiotics has created a new awareness and is a step in the right direction Morea believes that as an industry there should be better. At Hyperbiotics only the good stuff is used with none of the bad she said adding and the taste is still great. UpSpring launched their all-natural Wellbaby liquid vitamin line nearly two years ago with the intent of improving the health and wellness for moms and babies. Rowe said Our Wellbaby line provides the most complete vitamins for babies. It s all natural and easy to give the baby. We love to create innovative products that make life easier. In business since 1999 Fairy Tales Hair Care produces an assortment of nontoxic hair care products and bug repellents for children. Barash said that Fairy Tales Hair Care is the happy medium between traditional home remedies and harsh over-thecounter products. For example she noted In the case of lice many feel olive oil and mayonnaise will do the trick for athome remedies. However although these ingredients will eventually smother a live bug they will never be able to remove nits which is the trickiest part when stopping a lice outbreak. Pesticides are never the solution. The chemicals are harsh and no longer proven effective to kill the latest strain of lice. Using a naturally occurring non-bacterial enzyme from a safe yeast strain is how we were able to create the effective Lice GoodBye Treatment. The foaming formula effectively treats lice by allowing for the lice as well as the nits to be lifted from the hair using a fine nit-free comb in conjunction with the product. The same concept applies when it comes to preventing lice. Barash recommends using organic herbs such as rosemary tea tree and citronella. The scent of these extracts helps repel the bugs she said. It s natural and effective. Rosemary Repel hairspray and gel could be used as an additional layer of protection providing a coating on the strands which make it difficult for lice to attach to the hair shaft. According to Barash their products were tested at the Lice Solutions NonProfit Center and were proven to be up to 96 percent effective when correctly used. Fairy Tales Hair Care offers retailers their Facts of Lice brochure which details what to look for and what to do during a lice outbreak. Barash pointed out that if a retailer tells one mother that they carry Fairy Tales Hair Care the rest is done. She said One local lice outbreak and a retailer can sell-out in minutes. Moms traditionally had to take six to 12 fenugreek capsules per day or drink a bitter fenugreek tea. We thought There has to be a better way. TRENDS IN Sales Enhancement In order for retailers to further boost sales of children s products Rowe suggests signage. One of the most frustrating things for a parent especially with a child in tow is not being able to find the product easily she said. And once a product is found moms will probably have questions. Rowe recommends that a store s staff is well educated about children s products. Hands down it s one of the easiest ways to drive excitement she said. It s why we work with many partners by providing an educational material for employees so they can better understand all the benefits of our products. Knowledge has had a significant impact on the children s health market as many parents become more aware of the importance of using natural alternatives. They are more willing to seek out products that are free of harmful ingredients yet efficacious. The consumer group of health conscious moms is growing as more and more information becomes available linking healthy eating exercise and proper nutrient intake to better health for both children and adults. As this group becomes more informed they are also demanding highquality products and ingredients. Children s Health Market Gains Appeal In the grand scheme of things the children s health market is gaining wide audience appeal according to Morea of Hyperbiotics. Three specific trends she noticed include gummy vitamins even though they are often high in sugar and artificial ingredients branded marketing with cartoons and movies to gain wide audience appeal and studies to support market trends such as Euromonitor International The Growing Pediatric and Prenatal Supplements Market. Rowe of UpSpring agreed that the category will continue to grow with innovative ways to provide children with all natural products to improve their overall nutrition. By Lisa Schofield he more your customers take care of it --the more it will take care of them. It is the precious and incredibly complex immune system. Unfortunately for the majority of us-- our it is under continuous pressure some would say even attack. Promoting healthy immune function is no longer seasonal and ensuring that members of your community understand that and become proactive will be highly appreciated. Many experts will certainly attest that throughout time the human immune system was always vulnerable to its current conditions yet some staunchly believe that never in our history (past and recent) has the human immune system been so abjectly assaulted. Mark J. Kaylor founder of Radiant Health Project in Georgia stated While humankind has obviously always been in T need of a healthy and functioning immune system it is likely that it is of even greater necessity today than ever before. There are a number of factors related to our lifestyle and world we live in that place extra and unprecedented demand upon our immune systems. Chiefly and no surprise is a typical diet of manufactured foods and beverages as opposed to a diet consisting mostly of locally grown fresh resources. Not only are millions of people ingesting significantly higher amounts of refined carbohydrates and sugars (which Kaylor said suppresses immune function within minutes after consumption) but there are sundry chemicals for preservation shelf stability colors texturizers etc. and if produce is not organic residues of pesticides. Add to this blitzkrieg of man-made chemical assaults toxins floating around in the environment. Further unless one is an ardent fitness center-goer people tend to be much more sedentary (especially children) than in previous generations. Cameron Moeller ND marketing manager for American Biotech Labs asserted that the need for immune support supplements has never been greater than now. The average person today gets limited exercise and their diet is less than ideal. Environmental toxins are becoming more prevalent in the food we eat and even the air we breathe he asserted. Hank Cheatham vice president marketing and sales for California-based Daiwa Health Development pointed to the increased prevalence of illnesses as demonstrative of the need for increased supplementation to support healthy immune function. Similarly Tina Anderson president of Illinois-based Just Thrive Probiotic said the need for immune support is dire considering the pandemic we are facing with 42 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com pharmachem for info about this advertiser autoimmune disease and immune dysfunctions like childhood asthma. Autoimmunity affects approximately 50 million Americans she noted and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that asthmatic children miss a compounded total of approximately 14 million school days annually. She explained A common misconception is that immune-support just means up-regulating the immune system to help fight off colds and flu but true immune support actually encompasses all facets of the immune system including immune dysfunctions like allergies asthma and autoimmune disease. Also allopathic treatments may impede normal or healthy immune functioning--consider the ads for psoriasis treatments which caution that the patient may have compromised immunity and be more vulnerable to infections. Current health modalities used when a person is sick are becoming less effective by the day and more expensive said Moeller. Immune system support supplements are an easy step that anyone can take in giving their bodies a first line of defense against the challenges our bodies face daily. Cheatham agreed noting Coping with health issues is a major concern in modern times especially as one ages but it doesn t have to mean giving up one s quality of life. A healthy immune system provides the strength to endure aggressive medical treatments such as toxic prescription medications. A strong immune response provides the power to fight illness and the vitality to get more out of life. Promoting Perennial Immunity As mentioned it is still the norm for many Americans to immediately equate immune health with winter ails. The fact does remain that immunesupport supplementation during the wintertime is certainly not for naught--folks Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalvitaminsource for info about this advertiser 44 VITAMIN RETAILER tend to become more susceptible to viruses which are at peak in the cold temperatures but also because hibernation becomes habitual and vitamin D levels drop dramatically due to not being exposed to sunrays. Add to this the proximity of other people which increases spreading and sharing of viruses and bacteria--and the lower one s immune system is functioning the higher the chances that that person will soon be felled by a bug occupying his her body. But the concept of confining immune boosting for winter is not only shallow or narrow-minded it can be deleterious. As retailers the message that nourishing one s immune system should be a normal daily activity all year long year after year can create a sense of deeper loyalty among customers and the community. Chad Bradford president of Texasbased retailer Sunflower Shoppe (with three locations) said that allergies are one of the most common immune health questions we are asked about. We help guide the customer to a product that matches their needs. Also we may share success stories that other customers may have had with the same product. However many times you can t stop there. It s very important for consumers to understand how to support their immune systems in other ways. Some of those areas include gut health inflammation avoiding or reducing stressors and more if needed. In Montana Sheryl Eaglewoman of Mountain Valley Foods said the concerns she and her staff see most commonly with their customers include respiratory health especially during fire season and seasonal complaints such as winter time cold and flu season as well as springtime allergies. However often when consumers enter Garner s Natural Life in South Carolina they are already experiencing symptoms said Sherri McCall CNHP. Most of the time they come see us when they are already sick this is our opportunity to help them get better and also to discuss how they can build up their immune systems to better fight against that sickness. Moeller pointed out that in the spring and summer there are different factors that can negatively impact the immune system and these tend to be overlooked. In the springtime flora bursting forth release extremely high levels of allergens which puts stress on the immune system. And as people emerge from hibernation to bask in the new WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com evalar for info about this advertiser Go to www.vitaminretailer.com bluebonnet for info about this advertiser warmth they are increasing their exposure to environmental toxins including lawn-care chemicals. In the summertime many people tend to loll on towels or chairs under the sun overexposing themselves to UV rays which also suppresses immune function a visible example of this is the appearance of a cold sore in many people with Herpes simplex 1 after the first intense sun exposure. Additionally stated Moeller Our risk of food poisoning is also higher in the summer months because the higher temperatures increase the speed with which food-borne pathogens can grow and spread. Some types of seafood that are more commonly associated with food poisoning such as oysters are at their peak in the summer. We also tend to grill more foods during the summer like chicken pork steaks and hamburgers and if they are not cooked properly can make us sick. Taking an immune support supplement daily is a small and easy step that can aid our immune systems in their daily battles against whatever life throws at them. Healthy immune support is not limited to what seasonal assaults lie in wait according to Anderson who believes that a highly prevalent danger is the immune system going haywire and attacking the body as in the case of autoimmune conditions. Additionally it s the responsibility of the immune system to detoxify the body remove dead cells and to even prevent the development of cancer cells. So the immune system is always working and its function is always critical not just seasonally. Among products addressing such needs Oreganol P-73 is the only oregano safe for daily use all year long to keep the immune system strong emphasized Judy Gray owner of Indianabased North American Herb & Spice. Recommend Oreganol first when a customer feels he or she needs help at any time of the year. Plus customers can use it for daily antioxidant protection. Cancer is not seasonal. Brain health is not as well--and it was recently discovered that the immune system plays a very significant role in not just brain health but the development of dementia and Alzheimer s disease as well. Systemic inflammation a major element of every chronic disease is an immune activity that also does not limit itself to the winter. The list goes on and on. The integrated relationships between immune support and brain support--as well as immune support and healthy inflammatory response support--clearly points to cross-merchandising opportunities. This further creates the opportunity for customers to learn just how interdependent their bodily systems are regarding supporting brain health etc. with immune health through immune health. The gateway for consumer understanding about how their immune systems work is seasonal however because this is the already established link in their minds. Perhaps your store can provide quarterly (seasonal) immune health workshops where natural health experts can teach consumers how and why to support their immune status. At Sunflower Shoppe said Bradford employees educate their consumers about immune support through spending time with them store signage literature free health seminars at our locations and corporate health events. Among these Silver Biotics from American Biotech Labs is an advanced daily supplement that harnesses the power of our patented SilverSol Technology to support the immune system noted Moeller. It is doctor recommended and backed by hundreds of reports and studies. It is ideal for daily use by both children and adults and is safe and effective. Silver Biotics is the top-selling silver supplement on the market because it works very well at supporting the immune system. Just Thrive said Anderson is formulated with unique Bacillus endospores which reportedly survive the gastric system to arrive alive and intact in the intestinal tract where they have been shown to interact with gut-associated immune tissue to modulate favorable immune response. They are the ultimate immune trainers she stated adding that sporebased probiotics have been shown to support human immune response by triggering critical immune proliferating cytokines. Spores stimulate Peyer s patches the primary centers of T-cell and B-cell proliferation critical in anti-viral activity. Spores also increase toll-like receptor activity which shuttles the body to a Th1 adaptive immune response and increases pattern recognition where the immune system better recognizes vital antigens (thereby reducing the attack of non-harmful antigens) Anderson said. Studies using spores as vaccine delivery vehicles have shown that they have the ability to increase anti-viral and antibacterial immune response in the gut mucosa which is then seen in other mucosal tissues as well such as the 52 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com daiwa for info about this advertiser nasopharynx urogenital and pulmonary. Anderson said in one study according to the researchers the anti-viral benefits of Bacillus subtilis spores increased antibody and T cell responses to a coadministered soluble antigen but also broadened them to include both antigen specific CD4 and CD8 T cell responses as well as complement and non-complement fixing antibody isotypes. Spores augmented specific IgA to co-administered antigen both in the local respiratory and distal vaginal mucosa. Herbal medicine has several categories that strongly affect and support the various parts of the immune system explained David Winston RH(AHG) Herbalist & Alchemist of New Jersey. Immune amphoterics are tonics or food for the immune system. They enhance normal function and help re-regulate a depressed over active or dysregulated immune response. This means they are appropriate support for those with hypoimmune conditions as well as allergies and auto-immune issues. Common Immune amphoterics include reishi maitake astragalus ashwagandha American or Asian ginseng and schisandra. According to Winston allergies (overactive immune response) or autoimmune conditions (which are usually hyperactive and hypoactive at the same time) also require the use of immunoregulatory herbs which are systemic antiinflammatories that inhibit the deposition of immune complexes. Herbs in this cat- egory include bupleurum gotu kola turmeric sarsaparilla Salvia miltiorrhiza Scutellaria baicalensis and boswellia. Herbalist & Alchemist provides a wide variety of herbal supplements that provide nourishing immune system support. These include Immune Adapt (capsules and liquid) Seven Precious Mushrooms Immune Balance Compound Echinacea Goldenseal Compound Astragalus Echinacea Compound Ultimate Echinacea VX Immune Support Healthy Kid s Compound Fit Adapt and Immune Support Kit. Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound (RBAC) is the active ingredient in PeakImmune4 from Daiwa Health Development Inc. The RBAC in PeakImmune4 is a polysaccharide dietary fiber derived from rice bran and modified by an enzyme from Shiitake mushrooms using a patented biotechnology process. Cheatham explained that it strengthens the immune system by increasing the level of T cells and research has shown that PeakImmune4 can triple natural killer (NK) cell activity increase helper T cells and demonstrate vital antioxidant and immune balancing activity. He noted that pre-clinical studies have shown that the RBAC contained in PeakImmune4 increased the T cell levels up to 200 percent. The enhanced activity of helper T cells supports the proliferation of cytotoxic T and B cells. B cells promote a healthy production of antibodies to combat viral and bacterial infections. PeakImmune4 can also strengthen and increase the population of macrophage and induces the production of cytokines especially tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) gamma-interferon Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interleukin-12 (IL12) Cheatham added. It is important to note that RBAC is clinically shown to be a true immune modulator. It will optimize the immune response and not allow the immune system to over-simulate. Whether your customers love eating them or hate them on their plates mushrooms have extraordinary properties for immune wellness said Kaylor. Medicinal mushrooms are a diverse long-used and well-researched group of tonic remedies that also offer some very specific more therapeutically oriented benefits. Hundreds of mushrooms have demonstrated powerful immune supporting benefits. Many have also been confirmed as effective adjunct therapies that combine well with conventional treatments. Along with this they often bring a holistic array of supportive actions that can contribute to a robustly functioning immune system. While many mushrooms have been shown to boost immune system activity Kaylor said comparative studies on the Maitake D-Fraction from Mushroom Wisdom New Jersey demonstrated it may be the most potent for immunity. Reishi also provides immune and whole body balancing activities that help maintain healthy function while supporting virtually every body system and organ. Reishi is so effective and diverse in its healing gifts that I have coined the phrase tonic for the 21st century to best describe its activities he said. Chaga mushroom also can strengthen the body as a whole reduce inflammation and fight free radicals while boosting immune function. And while your customers may not feel they are immune to people and things that annoy them they can certainly feel a greater sense of inner well-being and strength that is accorded to them by an optimally functioning immune system. People are living longer than they used to. According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA) part of the U.S. Government s National Institutes of Health (NIH) the average life expectancy at birth in the U.S. in 1970 was 70.8 years. In 2008 that number had increased to 78 years and by 2020 the projected life expectancy will reach 79.5 years. According to Sebastien Bornet vice president of global sales and marketing at Horphag Research in New Jersey more than 3.5 million Baby Boomers turn 55 each year. By 2030 there will be approximately 72 million elderly persons in the U.S. T Many Baby Boomers have embraced the concept of healthy aging and they re doing their research on the benefits of natural ingredients that can help them live healthier happier lives. Younger consumers too have taken an interest in using science-backed ingredients to maintain their good health. Customer Interests & Concerns Traditionally capsules and tablets have been the standard delivery system for most supplements but over the past decade there has been a marked shift to alternative forms like drink mixes premixed liquids and soft chews explained Mount. Adding yet another pill to the mix is a concern and Neocell has managed to bypass that issue with their best-selling Super Collagen powder that delivers an effective dose without requiring consumers to swallow several pills. More recently the industry has gone a step further by creating products that a consumer actually looks forward to taking he continued. NeoCell Beauty Bursts are a soft-chew formulation that taste great and supply consumers with vital nutrients for longevity such as collagen hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Rhonda Miller general manager of Health Foods Unlimited in Dayton OH agreed that longevity and healthy aging is a growing category and that customers do a good bit of their own research before coming in to the store. Suppliers with great marketing teams that create brochures signage and articles are the ones that help sell the products she said. NeoCell is a big believer in cross merchandising. A study from Age of Naturals Pink Report showed 72 percent of women who buy external beauty products believe in the concept of beauty from within and would be interested in an internal supplement explained Mount. VITAMIN RETAILER 75 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE Not the Usual Nutraceuticals for Prostate Health By Gene Bruno MS MHS Huntington College of Health Sciences f I asked you to list the most common nutraceuticals with human clinical research that are found in formulas for prostate health you might say saw palmetto pygeum pumpkin seed oil zinc lycopene and beta-sitosterol. But how would you respond if I asked you to list some of the less commonly used nutraceuticals also with human clinical research for prostate health. This article will present three such nutraceuticals curcumin green and black tea extracts and reishi mushroom extract. I Curcumin Curcumin is certainly a popular nutraceutical for use as an anti-inflammatory agent. However it is not commonly found in prostate products--and when it is it is often not present at a clinically relevant dose. Nevertheless curcumin does have research supporting its use for this purpose. A pilot study with 61 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients (age range 55-65) was conducted to evaluate the 76 VITAMIN RETAILER use of curcumin (administered as 1 000 mg day Meriva) as an adjunct to a currently validated standard treatment defined as the best standard management (BSM) versus BSM only. Effectiveness was assessed using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). Results showed that all IPSS scores with the exception of the stream weakness score in the BSM group were improved (p 0.05 vs. inclusion) in both groups. However the overall results in the Meriva group were significantly better than in the BSM-only group (p 0.05) and were without reported side effects. Specifically the IPSS score declined by 9.05 points in the Meriva group comparted to a decline of only 3.45 points in the BSM only group. Likewise quality of life improvement was significantly better in the Meriva group (p 0.01) and there was also a significantly greater decrease in episodes of urinary infections and urinary block in the Meriva group (p 0.01). In addition the sexual activity score was significantly improved in the Meriva group compared to only slightly improved in the BSM only group (p 0.05). The researchers concluded In patients with BPH the addition of Meriva to the standard treatment contributed to the reduction of signs and symptoms of the disease without causing any significant additional side effect. Green and Black Tea Extracts Green tea and to a lesser extent black tea extracts are used as antioxidants and in diet weight-loss formulas. Two years ago a study published in Therapeutic Advances in Urology indicated that they might also have value in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as those found in BPH. A randomized double-blind placebocontrolled study was conducted with 40 men (age range 30-70) suffering from LUTS to examine the effects of a green and black tea extract blend (AssuriTEA). Subjects were randomized to 500 mg or (Continued on page 81) WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 PRODUCTSPOTLIGHT Preparing for Sinus Cold and Flu Season BY JANET POVEROMO C old flu and sinus congestion time is fast approaching. According to the Alzheimer s Association The number of Americans living with Alzheimer s disease is growing -- and growing fast. An estimated 5.4 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer s disease in 2016. One in nine people age 65 and older has Alzheimer s disease. By midcentury someone in the United States will develop the disease every 33 seconds. It is also important to understand that AD is a fatal disease. It kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined and is the sixth leading cause of death in America. It causes death by destroying brain function. It is D sobering to note that one in three seniors dies with AD or another form of dementia even if their death is immediately attributable to another cause such as heart disease or cancer. And by 2050 rates are expected to nearly triple. One could argue that these rates are rapidly rising because more people are living longer. It is true that age is a risk factor for AD and other forms of dementia. However longer life is not the only reason we are seeing these astounding increases. Factors that influence AD risk are certain anti-choline prescription drugs (found especially in sleep allergy and urinary urgency products) high blood sugar head trauma history of major depression cardiovascular issues smoking lack of physical activity excessive level of alcohol consumption and the consumption of Frankenfoods that bear no resemblance to the more wholesome meals of our great-grandparents. At first glance it may be difficult to see what these risk factors have in common. Yes they are not healthy practices but in what way are they promoting AD Aside from genetic and epigenetic factors I believe it comes down to three basic aspects of brain health chronic inflammation oxidative stress and impaired detoxification. Ongoing exposure to these three elements creates brain changes that interfere with the architecture responsible for problem solving recognition judgment and memory. So while it would be cruel to infer that if we just address these three areas we can cure this dreadful disease once and for all it is important to note that by modulating these processes improvements in prevention and slowing the decline of the disease is entirely possible. Curcumin and Vitamin D Perhaps the most promising natural intervention for prevention and also for VITAMIN RETAILER 79 SEPTEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION slowing the progression of AD is curcumin because it addresses all three key etiological factors. Additionally curcumin has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce factors associated with hyperglycemic damage. High blood sugar creates damage to blood vessels that initiates an inflammatory reaction. It also can cause oxidative stress to the sensitive brain tissue. One researcher has called Alzheimer s diabetes of the brain because people with diabetes have much higher rates of AD and also other forms of dementia. There are two other areas of curcumin s unique activity with direct application to AD. The first is the ability of curcumin to stimulate the creation of new brain cells particularly in the hippocampus which is the seat of memory in the human brain. This process is called neurogenesis. The second is its ability to stimulate macrophage activity to destroy beta amyloid plaque a hallmark protein that creates brain plaques that interfere with proper functionality. While curcumin is powerful on its own recent research has found that curcumin combined with vitamin D may be even more powerful in its anti-plaque benefits. It is also interesting that when compared to people who have optimal levels of vitamin D people with low levels of vitamin D at age 65 are more than twice as likely to experience mental decline. A study published in 2009 found that these nutrients work especially well together to stimulate the immune system to clear the brain of the plaques which are believed to be the cause of AD. In another study scientists at University of California called curcumin anti-amyloid for its ability to overcome the beta-amyloid protein. In an animal study curcumin reduced substances believed to cause plaque by 43 to 45 percent. Some researchers have suggested curcumin binds directly to plaques and eliminates them. In a human AD study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology patients were given either a placebo or high absorption curcumin with turmeric essential oil called BCM-95. Researchers commented on the resulting increased levels of beta amyloid in the bloodstream as indicative that the beta-amyloid plaque formations in their brains were dissolving and the bloodstream was carrying them away for waste disposal. Though complications in the 80 VITAMIN RETAILER study reduced significance this trend is very encouraging. Research on curcumin continues but the results are already a quite powerful argument to include this supplement in every healthy brain aging protocol. Curcumin vs. Turmeric It is surprising how much confusion remains in the natural products industry regarding the properties of curcumin compared to the spice turmeric. Though turmeric is a healthy food it does not absorb well and contains very little curcumin (only about 2 to 5 percent). It is virtually impossible to achieve the blood levels of curcumin demonstrated as effective in published studies using turmeric. The equivalence would be hundreds of capsules per day. Curcumin is hard to absorb as well. Early studies used as much as 10 to 12 grams (20 to 24 capsules) and this is not practical for most people. When I am talking with patients and customers I encourage them to first review the human clinical research and second consider how many capsules per day are needed to equal that data. There are curcumin products on the market that now can deliver these dosage equivalents in two capsules per day via a variety of absorption systems. The forms of enhanced absorption curcumin listed on PubMed the electronic database of the National Institute of Health as used in human studies on reducing risk factors for AD or use in patients with AD include lipidated curcumin an unspecified curcumin and BCM-95 Curcumin with turmeric essential oil. acetylcholinesterase which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a messenger in the brain carrying information between brain cells and supporting memory and learning and low levels of acetylcholine are associated with AD. Preventing it from being broken down and eliminated keeps more acetylcholine active in the brain longer. These oils are considered natural acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. There are also pharmaceutical drugs that are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors but they often come with unpleasant side effects and have minimum effectiveness. These oils are effective but without the serious adverse effects. In clinical tests healthy volunteers who took Spanish sage oil experienced improved memory and recall. When this plant oil was given to people with AD their attention and focus improved and many of their other symptoms were reduced. Both oils can play an important role in healthy brain function. Active Glutathione Glutathione is the major antioxidant of the central nervous system which includes the brain. It has been shown that active glutathione levels decrease with age and certain diseases of which AD is one. Researchers have suggested that improvement in levels of active glutathione will significantly improve brain function but research on supplemental glutathione and neurological diseases is in its infancy because it is not easy to boost levels in the blood stream. This is one antioxidant you can t get from food--your own body has to make it. Unfortunately the digestive process turns active glutathione into the inactive form even when it is enteric coated an inactive glutathione is not useful. Active glutathione is very effective when administered intravenously for a wide variety of neurological concerns including Parkinson s disease which itself can lead to dementia. Some integrative practitioners use Nacetylcysteine (NAC) to boost glutathione to avoid these absorption challenges. NAC is a raw material used by the body to make glutathione. It is Rosemary and Spanish Sage Essential Oils Oils from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Spanish sage (Salvia lavandulifolia) plants have a long history of use as aids to enhancing memory and learning. In fact rosemary is called the herb of remembrance and modern science has shown it is a powerful antioxidant meaning that it can neutralize free radicals that damage or even destroy brain cells. Both rosemary and Spanish sage oils slow down the activity of the enzyme WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 useful in younger and healthier people but research has shown that older adults especially those with chronic diseases are not able to make glutathione efficiently. Their glutathionemaking machine is impaired. It is estimated that by age 65 glutathione production can be reduced as much as 50 percent. Therefore bypassing the failing mechanism of glutathione creation is often necessary meaning the use of active glutathione to boost these levels. There are newer oral delivery systems that show great promise in unique ways to boost active glutathione in the body but make sure any you select are clinically studied and have data showing they raise active not inactive levels of this crucial compound. Two forms that have published human studies showing improvements in overall glutathione levels are the French sublingual form (called Sublinthion) and the liposomal form (sold under a variety of product names). However levels may be misleading if the amount increased is not in the active form so reviewing research prior to use is important in selecting an effective product. effective Alzheimer s prevention and treatment protocol available today. SEPTEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 81 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray Lack of Stomach Acid Revisiting Hydrochloric Acid Therapy B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND I n the natural product industry it seems that there is a constant focus on what is new. That focus sometimes takes us away from time-tested highly effective products. One such product that seems to have lost its luster is hydrochloric acid (HCL)--a key factor secreted by the stomach to insure proper protein digestion and mineral absorption. HCL supplementation was once a very popular therapy for digestive disturbances but now it seems that there is too much attention gastric acid excess than the more common cause of indigestion--lack of gastric acid secretion. My suggestion is that in most people with chronic indigestion rather than focus on blocking the digestive process with antacids the natural approach to indigestion focuses on aiding digestion. In that goal supplemental HCL can be extremely effective and is a very inexpensive therapy. Of course other natural digestive aids have their place as well and several are discussed below. 82 VITAMIN RETAILER Examining Hypochlorhydria Hypochlorhydria refers to deficient gastric acid secretion while achlorhydria refers to a complete absence of gastric acid secretion. There are many symptoms and signs that suggest impaired gastric acid secretion and a number of specific diseases have been found to be associated with insufficient gastric acid output. These are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Table 1. Common Signs and Symptoms of Low Gastric Acidity Bloating belching burning and flatulence immediately after meals A sense of fullness after eating Indigestion diarrhea or constipation Multiple food allergies Nausea after taking supplements Itching around the rectum Weak peeling and cracked fingernails Dilated blood vessels in the cheeks and nose Acne Iron deficiency Chronic intestinal parasites or abnormal flora Undigested food in stool Chronic candida infections Upper digestive tract gassiness Protocol for HCL Supplements My advice to people who have symptoms suggestive of lack of HCL or those suffering from a disease linked to lack of HCL is to give HCL supplementation a try. Here are the easy to follow guidelines that I recommend 1. Begin by taking one tablet or capsule containing 500 to 600 mg of HCL at your next large meal. If it does not aggravate your symptoms at every meal after that of the same size take one more tablet or capsule. (One at the first meal two at the meal after that WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 Table 2. Diseases Associated with Low Gastric Acidity Addison s disease Asthma Celiac disease Dermatitis herpetiformis Diabetes mellitus Eczema Gallbladder disease Graves disease Chronic auto-immune disorders Hepatitis Chronic hives Lupus erythematosis Myasthenia gravis Osteoporosis Pernicious anemia Psoriasis Rheumatoid arthritis Rosacea Sjogren s syndrome Thyrotoxicosis Hyper- and hypothyroidism Vitiligo then three at the next meal etc.) 2. Continue to increase the dose until you reach seven tablets or when you feel warmth in your stomach whichever occurs first. A feeling of warmth in the stomach means that you have taken too many tablets for that meal and you need to take one less tablet for that meal size. It is a good idea to try the larger dose again at another meal to make sure that it was the HCL that caused the warmth and not something else. 3. After you have found that the largest dose that you can take at your large meals without feeling any warmth maintain that dose at all of meals of similar size. You will need to take less at smaller meals. 4. When taking a number of tablets or capsules it is best to take them throughout the meal. 5. As your stomach begins to regain the ability to produce the amount of HCL needed to properly digest your food you will notice the warm feeling again and will have to cut down the dose level. In my clinical experience I found that HCL supplementation could be life changing for many people. The Cause of Hypochlorhydria Like peptic ulcer disease achlorhydria and hypochlorhydria have been linked to the overgrowth of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. It has been shown that 90-100 percent of patients with duodenal ulcers 70 percent with gastric ulcers and about 50 percent of people over the age of 50 test positive for H. pylori. The presence of H. pylori is determined by determining the level of antibodies to H. pylori in the blood or saliva or by culturing material collected during an endoscopy as well as measuring the breath for urea. Low gastric output is thought to predispose to H. pylori colonization and H. pylori colonization increases gastric pH thereby setting up a positive feedback scenario and increasing the likelihood for the colonization of the stomach and duodenum with other organisms. Not surprisingly habitual use of antacids and acid-blocking drugs appears to promote H. pylori overgrowth. If H. pylori gastritis leads to achlorhydria the next obvious question what are the factors that lead to H. pylori gastritis. Consistent with history conventional medicine is obsessed with the infective agent rather than host defense factors. Because research focuses on eradicating the organism there is little information on protective factors against infectivity. Proposed protective factors against H. pylori induced intestinal damage are maintaining a low pH and insuring adequate antioxidant defense mechanisms. Low levels of vitamin C and vitamin E and other antioxidant factors in the gastric juice not only appear to lead to the progression of H. pylori colonization but since the mechanism by which H. pylori damages the stomach and intestinal mucosa is via oxidative damage also contribute to the ulcer-causing potential of H. pylori. Furthermore antioxidant status and gastric acid output appears to be the answer to the question as to why everyone infected with H. pylori does not get peptic ulcer disease or gastric cancer. ments. It also has some scientific support in the medical literature for eradicating H. pylori as well as helping with general indigestion. In one study of 52 patients suffering from an H. pylori infection the patients were randomized into the following four groups Group A received 350 mg of mastic gum three times a day for 14 days. Group B received 1 050 mg of mastic gum three times daily for 14 days. Group C received 350 mg of mastic gum three times a day plus the acidblocking drug Protonix (pantoprazole) at a dosage of 20 mg twice a day for 14 days. Group D received Protonix 20 mg plus the antibiotics amoxicillin 1 000 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. At the beginning of the study all patients were positive for H. pylori as confirmed by a urea breath test (UBT). H. pylori eradication was tested by a UBT five weeks after completion of the eradication regime. Results showed that eradication of H. pylori was confirmed in 4 13 patients in Group A and in 5 13 in Group B. No patient in Group C achieved eradication whereas 10 13 patients in Group D had a negative UBT. Here are my interpretations of this study. Mastic gum clearly has an ability to wipe out H. pylori but 14 days may not be sufficient of a time. Longer or even continued use may be required to eradicate H. pylori in some people. Next as the combination of mastic gum and an acid-blocking drug produced zero effect in eradicating H. pylori this combination should be avoided. Lastly as there was little difference in the group that took 1 050 mg versus 350 mg three times per day there does not seem to be a reason to take the higher dosage. DGL--A Special Licorice Extract Another natural product that may prove useful in helping to eradicate H. pylori is deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). This natural product has had the compound in licorice that can sometimes raise blood pressure removed. Clinical studies have shown DGL produces great results in healing both stomach and duodenal ulcers. Rather than inhibit the release of acid DGL stimulates the normal defense mechanisms that prevent ulcer formation. Specifically DGL improves both the quality and quantity Mastic Gum Mastic gum is a resinous exudate obtained from the stem and the main leaves of the mastic shrub (Pistacia lentiscus) found in Greece. It has a long history of use in ulcers and stomach ail- (Continued on page 89) VITAMIN RETAILER 83 SEPTEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM EXPOEASTBOOTHPREVIEW September 21-24 2016 Baltimore Convention Center Baltimore MD The following manufacturers advertising in this issue have submitted information describing their plans for Expo East--product launches show specials and special services are all included below. NATURALMEDICINE (Continued from page 83) of the protective substances which line the intestinal tract increases the lifespan of the intestinal cell and improves blood supply to the intestinal lining. The active components of DGL are believed to be special flavonoid derivatives. These compounds have demonstrated impressive protection against chemically-induced ulcer formation in animal studies. Several similar flavonoids have been shown to inhibit H. pylori in a clear-cut concentrationdependent manner. In addition unlike antibiotics the flavonoids also were also shown to augment natural defense factors which prevent ulcer formation. The standard dosage for DGL is two to four 380 mg chewable tablets between or 20 minutes before meals. Taking DGL in capsules or after meals is associated with poor results. Apparently the DGL must mix with saliva to produce its effects. pylori. Probiotics such as Lactobacillus sp. However no clinical trials have validated this effect. Other natural agents with similar in vitro (test tube) effects against H. pylori include garlic pomegranate extract oregano oil and d-limonene from lemons. These agents may prove very helpful against H. pylori. I would definitely recommend probiotic supplementation to fight against H. With two decades of experience in developing and managing sustainable companies Whittel launched more than 140 products won more than 30 industry awards for product excellence and has received multiple professional awards such as the Nutrition Business Journal s prestigious Business Achievement Award in the Mid-Size Company Growth Category. In 2013 Ms. Whittel was the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Florida Award recipient in the Emerging category as well as a national finalist. Answer I started Reserveage Nutrition with the goal of becoming an innovator in the health and wellness field providing best-in-class first-tomarket nutritional supplements made with top quality science-validated key ingredients. Science has always been critical to our mission and we have been able to benefit greatly from it. I gained a greater appreciation for the value of empowering our retailers as well as our ultimate consumers to be more informed about their decisions by providing education to them on key ingredients in our products. One of my goals throughout my professional life has been to under-promise and overdeliver. I believe these lessons will serve me well as CEO of TCC. cal mass of women in the executive management team it improves customer satisfaction and the bottom line. We have power at the shelf to not only promote the health of our children and our families but also make purchasing decisions that actually improve the health and well-being of people in distant communities who benefit from those purchases. There are many ways that women can globally enrich and empower the business culture and improve the world. As more women lean in and take on executive roles in the industry their confidence will increase and consumer satisfaction and trust will also improve. As the recently named CEO what is your vision for Twinlab Consolidated Holdings Inc. (TCC) Question Question What recent changes in the natural products industry do you think affect retailers most Question You have been active with Women in Naturals Networking. Do you have advice for women working in the natural products industry on leaning in Answer My vision and goals for the remainder of this year are very clear. We plan to focus on continuing to build the retailers and consumers trust in TCC brands making our brands the go-to choice for supplements. With consumer trust in the industry being as low as it is right now I feel that TCC is uniquely positioned to continue to build upon a foundation laid years ago to be the trusted source of scientificbased nutritional wisdom for years to come. My vision for TCC is the same one I have always had for Reserveage Nutrition which is to be a leader in this industry and to continue to clearly communicate what we stand for and how we can help promote consumers quality of life and ultimately that of the nation. What are the lessons learned as founder CEO of Reserveage that prepared you for leading TCC 92 VITAMIN RETAILER Answer As I look at the next five years the thing that makes me most concerned about the industry is the erosion of consumer trust. Many companies use the word science loosely without truly acknowledging what is required for claiming ingredients are science-based. In that same vein they re not concerned enough about providing education about ingredients which can result in repeat sales. Customers need to be educated that taking supplements won t usually result in immediate results--just like other things in life such as exercise. Our industry is undergoing unprecedented scrutiny and it s time for good companies to meet the leadership challenge and raise the bar for trust validation purity and efficacy. Rather than simply launching a new SKU companies should lead with innovation with key ingredients that have good science and be listening to consumer insights and feedback. Answer This is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart and I am extremely passionate about it. I have said this before and it s worth repeating. As a female CEO I believe women have a lot of opportunity for growth. Women according to care.org are nature s greatest untapped natural resource. I believe if we are to strengthen women within any industry the entire industry can elevate and grow in unprecedented ways. It is crucial that we provide women with the platform to rise professionally because growing a business takes a unique set of skills that women uniquely possess. As women we re wired for relationships which is fundamentally important because business is all about growing and nurturing relationships.
