Too many times I have walked into a room and forgot what I went in for. Sometimes I lose my train of thought mid-conversation after being distracted by something and I may forget a name. After all I m human and humans forget things. But the more we multitask the less we focus. I wonder how this affects us in the long run. While working on this month s feature article on memory and cognition I realized that the best thing we can do for our brain health is the best thing we can do for our overall health--maintain a healthy diet exercise and take the right supplements (see the article on page 30). And there are other ways to strengthen our brains. Sanam Hafeez PsyD a New York-based licensed neuropsychologist and teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher s College shared how we can exercise our minds and master our memory. Hafeez explained that just like physical exercise brain exercises strengthen and keep the mind agile and active. You have a cognitive reserve a finite amount of memory problem solving and visual motor even verbal reasoning skills that declines over time. The more you engage your brain the longer you can hold on to your cognitive reserve she said. There are a lot of activities one can do to help their brain. Research shows that any stimulating activity will boost circulation and activate areas of the brain. According to Hafeez things such as writing with your nondominant hand trying to remember phone numbers doing mental math I calculations the daily crossword or looking up a new word in the dictionary on a daily basis helps your mind stretch in ways you can t see but certainly feel. The frustration that you feel when doing something that s mentally taxing is when you know your brain is getting a workout. It s good for you she said. Brain boosters such as learning a new language a sport a musical instrument or painting sewing and arts and crafts improve the brain in bigger more long-term ways. It may even reduce or delay the onset on Alzheimer s and other mental decline again by strengthening the cognitive reserve Hafeez noted. Brain exercises are good for one s overall daily health and may actually protect one from more serious ailments. Daily smaller brain boosters can help with mental agility daily memory an active work and even social life by helping increase attention focus and creative problem solving skills. And here s another surprise according to www.mercola.com research has shown that surfing the web activates regions in your brain related to decision making and complex reasoning. So unlike passively watching TV using the internet is an engaging task that may actually help to improve your brainpower. If this is correct I should be a candidate for Mensa soon. Nine companies served as original beta-testers working with UL the global independent safety science company who is developing and administering the Supplement OWL to improve the process of inputting product labels. The Supplement OWL is now moving beyond the original beta-test and the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) who is providing the initial funding and has been coordinating efforts with the industry is urging companies to test out the product by inputting labels into the product registry prior to its public launch in January. Duffy MacKay ND CRN s senior vice president scientific and regulatory affairs advised Our goal is to make this process as efficient and easy as possible and the sooner companies start the process the more we can all learn together how to reach that goal. This important phase will demonstrate the scalability of the Supplement OWL a necessary component for the product registry to become a valuable resource T for its intended audience of regulators retailers the industry and ultimately consumers. Once there are a substantial number of product labels incorporated into Tier 1 of the Supplement OWL it will be launched publicly and available at no charge. Tier 1 will include a copy of the complete product label and various fields of information about the product including ingredients brand name allergen statements number of servings and more. Participation in this tier is free for any company who is willing to supply the required information about its products and will be accessible online at no charge to the public. There are two additional important elements in Tier 1 1) companies will be required to provide manufacturing and packaging facility contact information accessible only to FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and 2) each product entered will generate a unique product identifier which will have potential use as the Supplement OWL gains traction among its various audiences. UL in consultation with CRN and other industry leaders will soon begin developing Tier 2. For more information visit www.supplementowl.org www.ul.com and www.crnusa.org. FDA is collecting public comments following a Federal Register notice that would effectively ban vinpocetine a widely used product found in safe and legal dietary supplements. The FDA s decision could have major implications for new dietary ingredient (NDI) notifications T and have an adverse impact on consumers and manufacturers of dietary supplements. Daniel Fabricant PhD executive director and CEO of NPA said We think our comments lay out a framework whereby vinpocetine fits as a dietary ingredient under the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. If this notice goes into effect it will distort the market and confuse manufacturers selling safe and legal products and do nothing to protect consumers added Fabricant. Because of the farreaching implications this rule could have and the dangerous precedent it would set if allowed to move forward the FDA should conduct a full economic impact analysis and extend the comment period by a year or withdraw it effective immediately. The proposal has also received backlash from senior lawmakers including Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) who recently circulated a letter to the FDA asking the agency to review the impact this proposed rule could have on consumers and manufacturers of dietary supplements. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) also recommended the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) consider initiating rulemaking to declare vinpocetine to be a lawful dietary ingredient in comments submitted to the FDA. AHPA strongly encouraged FDA to clarify that if vinpocetine is either found to be currently in the market as a food ingredient or comes to be included as a food ingredient in the future the ingredient would therefore qualify as a dietary ingredient. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida Tampa Division ruled that Nicholas Scott Congleton deceptively marketed Pure Green Coffee for weight loss through NPB Advertising Inc. and a web of other companies under his control. The court order permanently bars him from A the deceptive advertising practices challenged by the Commission. In addition the court ordered another man Dylan Loher to turn over 549 000 in partial satisfaction of the judgment. The FTC charged Loher as a relief defendant meaning that he did not directly participate in the scheme but indirectly profited from it. As this case shows the FTC is willing to go the distance to make sure that defendants like these are held accountable said Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Jessica Rich. We re pleased that the court has put an end to Congleton s deceptive scheme. The FTC first filed a complaint against Florida-based NPB Advertising its principals and related companies in May 2014. According to the FTC s amended complaint the defendants used deceptive marketing to capitalize on the green coffee bean diet fad which gained notoriety on The Dr. Oz Show a syndicated television program. The scheme used mastheads of fictitious news outlets as well as logos from actual news organizations to trick consumers. Most of the defendants settled the FTC s charges in November 2015. These were the findings in a new study from the Odense Child Cohort recently published in The Australia & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry. And for every 10 nmol L increase in the vitamin D concentration in umbilical blood the risk of a being among the 10 percent highest score on the ADHD symptom scale fell by 11 percent explained one of the study s initiators Professor Niels Bilenberg. In the study 1 233 children from Odense Municipality (Denmark) were monitored. Vitamin D was measured in umbilical blood and mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) when their child was 2 to 5 years old. C THE GO TO RESOURCE FOR AND NATURAL PRODUCT RETAILERS The CBCL questionnaire can be used to identify early symptoms of ADHD even though an ADHD diagnosis cannot be made at that age. And the trend was clear those mothers who had taken vitamin D and had a vitamin D level (25 OHD) in their umbilical blood over 25 nmol L had children with lower ADHD scores continued Bilenberg. This was after we had corrected for other factors that could explain the link such as the mother s age smoking alcohol obesity education number of children psychiatric disease in the parents child s sex age and seasonal variation. The link between vitamin D and early ADHD symptoms has not been described before and has therefore attracted attention. We were very surprised that the link was so clear said two of the study s other authors medical students Jens Bull Aaby and Mats Mossin as there was no previous awareness that this link could be idenHEALTH tified at such an LIKE US ON early age. It s impossible to say with which children will develop ADHD later on but it will be interesting to further follow up those children who were at the highest end versus the normal range of the ADHD scale. The study offers no explanation as to how vitamin D can protect against ADHD but other studies have shown that vitamin D plays an important role in the early development of the brain. The review s authors note that most available studies are biased by several drawbacks however probiotics synbiotics psyllium and some herbal medicinal products (primarily peppermint oil) seem to be effective in ameliorating IBS symptoms. Synbiotics and fiber seem to be beneficial in patients with functional constipation and the non-pathogenic strain Nissle 1917 of Escherichia coli may be effective in maintaining remission in patients with ulcerative colitis. Patients with common functional bowel disorders such as chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome who cannot find benefit or have adverse effects with the use of traditional drug therapies or do not want to use them should be told that alternative medicines are available that may be effective said Dr. Diego Curro lead author of the British Journal of Pharmacology study. Also patients with mild clinical forms of ulcerative colitis should be informed that they might use with caution an alternative probiotic treatment to prevent relapse. Definitely one of the best new products of 2016 VR 28 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM DECEMBER 2016 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalfactors for info about this advertiser By Janet Poveromo I t is typical for people to have some mild memory weakness as they grow older. A temporary lapse in memory is often affectionately referred to as a Senior Moment. Common examples include forgetting dates and names or walking into a room and promptly forgetting the reason for entering. However some individuals experience more frequent and impairing memory loss that goes beyond normal aging this is referred to as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However scientists are discovering that cognitive deterioration need not be an inevitable result of aging. In fact increasing evidence suggests that cognitive decline and even dementia are preventable and to some extent perhaps even reversible. Individuals can take steps to maintain cognitive health throughout life. Jolie Root senior nutritionist and educator with Illinois-based Carlson Laboratories said decreased brain health could encompass many conditions but if we limit the topic to MCI and Alzheimer s disease (AD) the number of those affected is under intense scrutiny. According to the Alzheimer s Association long-term studies indicate 15 to 20 percent of those over age 65 are affected with mild cognitive impair30 VITAMIN RETAILER ment and 5.4 million individuals have been diagnosed with AD with that number expected to triple by 2050. Older people ( 65) largely are impacted. Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at Wisconsin-based EuroPharma Inc. pointed out that according to the Alzheimer s Association AD is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. More than five million Americans have AD and every 66 seconds someone in America develops the disease. We re still identifying the causes of AD but we know that chronic brain information and oxidative stress play a significant role said Myers. Also there are characteristic physical changes in the brains of individuals with this condition--accumulated clusters of a protein called beta amyloid and clumps of dead and dying nerve and brain cells. These clusters and clumps called plaques and tangles are believed to interfere with the proper transmission of messages between brain cells and the death of the cells themselves. Anything that increases inflammation in the brain increases risk for AD. In fact since high blood sugar causes inflammation some practitioners are even calling AD Diabetes of the Brain. Root added The non-modifiable risk factors for AD are well established and include advancing age genetic factors (such as the presence of the APOEe4 allele) and family history. Although multiple studies have shown that diet and lifestyle factors are associated with risk for AD the scientific evidence is lacking and further studies are needed. She agreed with Myers regarding the link between certain diseases and AD. Chronic diseases such as obesity diabetes hypertension hyperlipidemia and depression have been associated with AD. There is an increasing body of evidence that point to an association between diabetes and increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. AD itself has been referred to by some as type 3 diabetes so it is essential to explore potential therapeutic interventions. Although the underlying brain changes and mechanisms of diabetes-induced cognitive impairment still are not well understood interventions to delay or prevent the onset of cognitive impairment due to chronic disease such as diabetes offer hope. It is evident from the existing literature that onset of cognitive impairment in diabetes and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer s could have major underlying processes that cause Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM DECEMBER 2014 neuronal death these include failed antioxidant defense mechanisms increased inflammatory processes and reduced mitochondrial energy production. Root added that evidence suggests that people that have insulin resistance in particular those with type 2 diabetes have between 50 and 65 percent higher risk of suffering from AD. The working assumption is that brain insulin resistance leads to accelerated neurodegeneration driven by metabolic dysfunction increased oxidative stress neuroinflammation impaired cell survival and imbalanced lipid metabolism. Lack of insulin not only impairs cognition but also seems to be implicated in the formation of the amyloid plaques. Insulin resistance with subtle cognitive impairments is seen even in normal adults with prediabetes suggesting a higher risk of developing AD in later life she said. Nutraceuticals for Brain Health Myers said she believes we better understand now that inflammation and the damage it causes is a major contributor to cognitive decline so some of the mechanisms of action and basis for research have changed as well. That s one of the reasons we developed CuraMed Brain which many retailers also remember as Mental Advantage. It provides botanical and nutritional ingredients that reduce inflammation and oxidative damage in the brain and help keep neural connections running smoothly. This includes clinically studied curcumin blended with turmeric essential oil for enhanced absorption and the benefits of turmerones vitamin D3 and the concentrated botanical oils of rosemary and sage. Root added that the long chain fatty acids found in fish EPA and DHA are suggested to play a protective role especially if they are maintained at optimal levels in adulthood prior to the onset of impairment. Epidemiological and preclinical studies have shown that consumption of EPA and DHA may be protective against cognitive decline and prevent the progression of mental health disorders such as AD she said. The relationship between mental health disorders and omega-3 fatty acids is demonstrated by lower levels of red blood cell membrane or blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids in patients suffering from neurodegenerative disorders as compared with healthy people. More specifically EPA and DHA both are protective against unhealthy inflammation levels Root explained. Docosanoids metabolites of DHA have been shown to improve healing after brain injury and DHA levels increasing in the diet have been linked to reductions in levels of amyloid precursor proteins and levels of amyloid itself. Omega-3s have also been shown to improve insulin receptor function and reduce insulin resistance in healthy people and in overweight diabetic and prediabetic people. Myers noted that curcumin protects brain cells from damaging inflammation and oxidative stress. In experimental models of AD curcumin was able to reduce beta amyloid levels and shrink the size of accumulated plaques by over 30 percent. According to Myers other studies have shown that curcumin plays a role in regenerating neurons creating new brain cells and refreshing cells that may have once been considered irretrievable. This process is called neurogenesis and is an important factor in major depressive disorder (MDD) as well. One of the most prestigious Alzheimer s research institutes in the world the McCusker Alzheimer s Research Foundation (supporting research at Edith Cowan University Perth Australia) is focused on learning more on the benefits of curcumin for treating AD Myers said. In a groundbreaking new study the form of curcumin we use in CuraMed brain is being administered to patients with mild to moderate dementia in order to learn more about how curcumin can be used as an effective treatment of AD. The other benefit of curcumin--and one that also relates to AD--is that it prevents pre-diabetes from becoming full-blown diabetes Myers continued. The connection to AD is that high blood sugar levels create intensive inflammation in the brain. In fact in one study 25 percent of those with high blood sugar and actual diabetes developed AD. Even just having high blood sugar in the normal range still led to an 18 percent increased risk of dementia. Aside from curcumin vitamin D directly affects our cognitive health and abilities Myers added. By the time we re 65 years old our ability to naturally synthesize vitamin D from sunlight declines by up to 60 percent. Compared to people who have optimal levels of vitamin D low levels of vitamin D at age 65 mean you are twice as likely to experience mental decline. In fact a Dutch study found that patients with AD but high serum levels of vitamin D3 scored significantly higher on cognitive testing than those with low levels of the nutrient. Another clinical study published in the journal Neurology tracked adult volunteers aged 65 and older for six years their vitamin D levels and their elevated risk of dementia. At the end of the study they found that even moderate deficiencies in vitamin D increased the risk to 53 percent. For AD the risk was 69 percent--and that was for those who are only moderately deficient Myers pointed out. For anyone with severe deficiencies the risk of dementia was 125 percent and the risk of Alzheimer s was 122 percent. Vitamin D is absolutely essential for the brain Myers noted. Additionally research at the UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) School of Medicine published in the Journal of Alzheimer s Disease showed that vitamin D works with curcumin to protect the brain from damaging inflammation and New for Children s Brain Health tah-based Trace Minerals Research (TMR) a trace mineral and liquid magnesium brand recently introduced FMB (Feed My Brain) which was exclusively formulated by Alexander Schauss PhD. We are excited and fortunate to be able to partner with Dr. Schauss on the launch of FMB said Matt Kilts managing partner of TMR. When Dr. Schauss came to us with the formulation and all of the compelling scientific evidence that showed the importance of nutrition on brain function in children including pilot-controlled clinical trial studies performed around the world using supplements it was a no-brainer to add FMB to our product line because of how beneficial it would be to our customers. It has no added sugar and it s certified vegan. VITAMIN RETAILER 31 DECEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM clear the brain of amyloid plaques by stimulating a type of immune cell called a macrophage to more aggressively seek out and clean up beta-amyloid fragments in the brain. Curcumin and vitamin D work synergistically--they strengthen one another s impact--and are a potent protective force for the brain. In addition concentrated plant oils are powerful medicine Myers said. Oils from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Spanish sage (Salvia lavandulifolia) plants have a long history of use as aids to enhancing memory and learning she noted adding that rosemary oil can neutralize dangerous free radicals that destroy brain cells. Once it crosses the blood brain barrier it does not activate until free-radical stress occurs so it s safe and doesn t act indiscriminately. Both rosemary and Spanish sage preserve acetylcholine a messenger in the brain that supports memory and learning. Low levels of acetylcholine are associated with AD. They do this by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter. This is similar to how prescription drugs work but without the serious adverse effects Myers said. In a study in New Zealand this plant oil was given to people with AD and their attention and focus improved along with many of their other symptoms. While the authors stated that more research has to be done no significant side effects have been reported for either of these plant oils. dose levels were typically lower than 500 mg daily while studies that found benefit typically used DHA doses of 750 mg to as high as 1 500 mg. It is also important to realize that an early start can improve chances of healthy brain function throughout life. I think that aside from a greater role that lifestyle and natural interventions can have on Alzheimer s or other cognitive conditions Myers noted you ll start to see younger people becoming aware that they need to start earlier with a regimen of inflammation-fighting ingredients to protect neuroplasticity. However that may not always be easy. It can be tough to convince people in their 20s that this is necessary but as everyone moves into their 40s and 50s noticing the experience of their parents or other relatives makes the need for nutritional support more obvious. For Retailers As for EuroPharma Myers said We work one-on-one with retailers to help them develop sales tools that fit their needs and the needs of their customers and community. That includes detailed literature in-store lectures product webinars and personalized service from our science and education department sales staff and entire company. Utah-based RidgeCrest Herbals has a product called Blood Sugar Balance that is designed to help support levels in the normal range stabilize energy and improve mood and focus. According to Brittini Gehring MH chief botanical officer at RidgeCrest Herbals Blood Sugar Balance is a simple formula based off an ancient traditional Chinese formula known as white tiger decoction. She said This formula has been used to effectively address blood sugar issues from a TCM [traditional Chinese medicine] perspective for many thousands of years. This decoction usually consists of four ingredients including calcined gypsum non-glutinous rice anemarrhena root and Chinese licorice root. Together the ingredients work to help clear heat and drain fire in the organs related to blood sugar health. It also helps with symptoms such as excessive thirst and helps restore blood pH to normal levels said Gehring. Occasionally that formula is also used with other herbs such as ginseng to help provide additional energy support. Chromium Regulates Glucose Of the many specific nutrients that effect blood sugar chromium is a trace mineral that is probably the most well-known for the specific effect of helping to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood. Although Rainbow Light in California does not have a condition-specific product formulated solely for blood sugar management the company s multivitamins are formulated with carefully selected forms of chromium to allow adequate absorption and contribute to the diet s effect of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels that are already within a normal range according to Marci Clow MS RDN at Rainbow Light. Clow said Just like high-quality fuel keeps our cars running smoothly a healthy diet with a wide variety of nutrients provided by fruits vegetables whole grains and lean protein will keep our bodies functioning optimally and can certainly impact blood glucose levels. Blood sugar levels can also be impacted by supplemental nutrients and multivitamins are a fantastic tool for filling in dietary gaps by contributing nutrients that might be missing and could potentially effect blood sugar levels. Rainbow Light is part of the Wellnext family of brands which provide products to support a diverse range of needs throughout various stages of a healthy lifestyle. Of the wide variety of products offered by Wellnext brands Iceland Health has had many consumers report tremendous success with Iceland Health Chromax Plus--a product specifically formulated for promoting healthy blood sugar according to Clow. She added When considering bioavailability chromium is somewhat difficult to utilize. Chromax Plus contains two forms of chromium both studied for favorable effect on blood glucose. Chromium histidinate is speedily absorbed and immediately available for utilization whereas chromium picolinate is quite slowly utilized for long lasting comprehensive utilization. Iceland Health Chromax Plus provides 250 mcg of each form of chromium with a suggested use of one capsule per day. The company has just introduced a line extension Chromax Ultra Strength which has added biotin and cinnamon extract--both suggested to play a role in glucose metabolism. While there are many ingredients tout- ed for benefits in promoting healthy blood sugar Clow said she believes few supplemental ingredients have been researched for their potentially beneficial effects. As far as new ingredients for blood sugar support she said she hasn t seen any significant new entries into the category but believe that the following are potentially supportive but definitely need further evidence. Cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon contains compounds that may stimulate insulin receptors and improve insulin sensitivity according to Clow. Bitter Melon. The extract of momordica charantia is traditionally used in cuisines of Asia India South America and Africa but has limited research to support any claims that it helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Clow said It is hypothesized that isolated compounds may activate an enzyme that encourages cells to take up blood sugar. Fenugreek. This medicinal herb has been suggested in a few small trials to help reduce blood sugar in diabetics by slowing absorption of carbohydrate after a meal to improve insulin sensitivity Clow said. Vitamin D. Low D has been associated with poor blood sugar control and when combined with calcium seems to improve insulin sensitivity according to Clow. Magnesium. This mineral may improve insulin sensitivity said Clow. As it plays a role in transport of glucose into cells. Chromium in combination with biotin. According to Clow in a study of more than 400 people with poorly controlled blood sugar chromium picolinate along with biotin was suggested to provide better glucose regulation than placebo. Clow said that there is no magic supplement bullet for supporting healthy blood sugar but supplements may complement a healthy diet and lifestyle. Consumers need to understand that food intake causes a blood glucose rise triggering our pancreas to release insulin to allow glucose into the tissues she said. When we skip meals blood sugar levels drop which effects mood and tiredness. When we eat foods high in sugar or refined foods with a high glycemic index blood sugar levels rise and those who consume these foods on a regular basis could potentially be setting themselves up for a decreased effectiveness of insulin. Clow also recommended maintaining healthy blood sugar levels by exercising and speaking to a health care practitioner about dose safety and potential drug interactions. Magnesium is Essential for Healthy Blood Sugar Carolyn Dean MD ND medical advisory board member Nutritional Magnesium Association representing Natural Vitality in Texas agrees with Clow that magnesium is essential for healthy blood sugar. Magnesium is necessary for the activation and function of 700 to 800 enzyme systems in the body. She said It catalyzes most of the chemical reactions in the body. It synthesizes protein stabilizes RNA and DNA transmits nerve signals relaxes muscles whereas calcium contracts muscles and it produces and transports energy called ATP. Not all forms of magnesium are easily absorbed in the body according to Dean. She said The amount of magnesium your tissues can readily use is based on the amount of elemental or iconic magnesium that is released. There are several organic salt chelates that are highly absorbable such as magnesium citrate. Magnesium citrate powder dissolved in water offers a higher rate of absorption than most other forms of magnesium. Dean s advice for providing the best blood sugar support is avoiding simple sugars a high fiber diet avoiding gluten and dairy and taking magnesium. Additionally magnesium may also prevent and help with acid reflux adrenal fatigue angina anxiety atrial fibrillation brain function high blood pressure calcium deposits in arteries cholesterol constipation depression fibromyalgia headaches heart attacks IBS inflammation insomnia kidney stones migraines muscle spasms nerve twitches PMS seizures and sports injuries. Cinnamon for Blood Sugar Issues Holli Lapes RD of Life Extension based in Florida noted three products that address blood sugar issues--Tri Sugar Shield CinSulin with InSea2 and Crominex3 . Tri Sugar Shield contains a combination of three plant-derived nutrients-- sorghum bran extract mulberry leaf extract and phloridzin. Taken before heavy meals Tri Sugar Shield can help to VITAMIN RETAILER 35 DECEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Maintaining Healthy Blood Sugar support healthy postprandial glucose levels. For example said Lapes white mulberry enhances insulin sensitivity by stimulating a cellular transporter called GLUT4 to transport sugar out of the bloodstream. The natural ingredients in Tri Sugar Shield act in both an independent and complementary fashion to sequentially block starch digestion at each of its primary stages the breakdown of starch to disaccharides the breakdown of disaccharides into simple sugars and the absorption of simple sugars across the brush border membranes. CinSulin with InSea2 and Crominex3 contains a unique combination of clinically validated natural ingredients to help regular and support insulin function and glucose transport and to inhibit carbohydrate digestion respectively. CinSulin is a novel form of cinnamon clinically proven to support healthy glucose metabolism. Lapes said We use a water extract from the bark of Cinnamomum cassia. Cinnamon contains fat soluble aldehydes which can be toxic. This cinnamon extract is water soluble and therefore does not contain fat soluble toxic aldehydes. Crominex3 is an advanced chromium complex that has been optimized with standardized extract of Indian gooseberry and the adaptogen shilajit. Life Extension said it uses a highly stable and bioavailable form of chromium that is complexed with Capros amla (Emblica officinalis) and PrimaVie shilajit. Lapes noted The phenolic compounds and organic acids in shilajit and Indian gooseberry shield chromium from oxidative destruction in the body stabilizing its structure and enhancing bioavailability. InSea2 is a seaweed extract that blocks the action of glucosidase and amylase--enzymes the body uses to break down carbohydrates into glucose facilitating its transport into the bloodstream. In addition to the above-mentioned products that primarily focus on blood sugar regulation Life Extension also offers products that may protect individuals from the harmful effects of excess 36 VITAMIN RETAILER glucose such as Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer with BioPQQ which has key ingredients like R-Lipoic-Acid Carnosine and Benfotiamine. Life Extension is always staying abreast on the latest research Lapes said. We introduce new products or reformulate existing products based on emerging research. Currently Tri Sugar Shield continues to be Life Extension s top product for blood sugar support according to Lapes. While there are a number of botanicals that lower blood sugar levels many of them do this by raising insulin levels. While this may yield the short-term benefit of lowering one s blood sugar it may also contribute to the longer-term issue of insulin resistance. -- Mark J. Kaylor PhD CN sugar rather a healthy balance is supported by blood sugar and insulin levels kept at appropriate levels. According to Kaylor one of the best natural remedies clinically supported for improving cellular insulin sensitivity that supports healthy blood sugar levels is the Maitake SX-Fraction. Studies show it can lower both blood sugar and insulin levels and evidence that it is improving insulin sensitivity is seen in its cardiovascular benefits of lowering total cholesterol LDL cholesterol triglycerides and blood pressure he said. In fact one study found that Maitake s actions were comparable to and possibly even better than a leading pharmaceutical drug. Since the HbA1c is a measure for looking at blood sugar levels over a longer period of time than a regular blood sugar test one of the best ways to support results in the healthy range is to decrease insulin resistance make the cells more responsive to insulin thereby lowering both blood sugar and insulin levels especially over the long run. This is a key reason Maitake SXFraction is such a useful ally because it helps improve the cells sensitivity to insulin he added. Blood Testing In conclusion Lapes of Life Extension said that blood testing is an essential tool for individuals to monitor their health status. Blood labs including the Life Extension blood lab are especially vital to diabetics in helping to ensure they are on the right treatment path. Blood testing is also a great way to determine if your supplement regimen is meeting your needs. Some markers Life Extension suggests for people who are wanting to learn more about their blood sugar regulation include fasting glucose HbA1C and insulin. VR Mushroom--A Blood-Lowering Botanical Mark J. Kaylor PhD CN has been exploring holistic health and healing for close to four decades. The founder and director of the not-for-profit Radiant Health Project Kaylor also acts as consultant to New Jersey-based Mushroom Wisdom amongst other companies. Kaylor said that there are a number of nutrients and nutraceutical compounds that may be of benefit in targeting healthy blood sugar levels but one key factor is often overlooked. While there are a number of botanicals that lower blood sugar levels many of them do this by raising insulin levels. While this may yield the short-term benefit of lowering one s blood sugar it may also contribute to the longer-term issue of insulin resistance. Continuing he said When the cells are being constantly bombarded with chronically high levels of insulin the cells have a tendency to become less and less responsive thereby creating an evergrowing demand for more and more insulin production. An organic compound found naturally in foods such as sugar beets grains and spinach betaine HCL can be used as a supplement to increase stomach or gastric acid. In fact betaine HCI can support a number of digestive issues including hypochlorhydria and may help prevent digestive problems. Hypochlorhydria is a condition that is caused by the insufficient production of stomach acid. While hypochlorhydria can affect people of all ages it is much more common among older individuals. In fact some estimates suggest half of individuals over age 65 have inadequate stomach acid. Having an insufficient amount of stomach acid can have a negative effect on the proper digestion of food and may allow bacteria into the gut that would have normally been killed by the acid. In addition a number of chronic health disorders including asthma allergies and gallstones seem to be related to a low production of stomach acid. To address hypochlorhydria betaine HCL can be used to increase the amount of acid in the stomach. Those with maldigestion (digestive problems) may also benefit from betaine HCL. Maldigestion disrupts the absorption of nutrients and can even lead to hormone disruption. Symptoms often include bloating abdominal pain diarrhea flatulence excessive burping and or constipation. (Continued on page 44) WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM DECEMBER 2016 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE Does Supplementation Calcium Cause Coronary Artery Calcification By Gene Bruno MS MHS Huntington College of Health Sciences alcium intake and its relationship with coronary artery calcification (CAC) was examined in a recently published article by Anderson et al. in the Journal of the American Heart Association.1 The study looked at 5 448 adults who were free of cardiovascular disease at the onset of the study and their calcium intake over a period of 10 years. After 10 years CAC was measured in 2 742 of the original participants. The results were that high total calcium intake was associated with a decreased risk of atherosclerosis over the long-term. However an additional controversial finding in the study was that calcium supplement use (as opposed to dietary calcium intake) was associated with an increased risk of CAC--which could be a problem since CAC is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. So what does this mean--should everyone stop taking calcium supplements To answer this question let s take a closer look at this study. C Epidemiological Not Clinical First of all the Anderson et al. study was epidemiological not clinical. Epidemiological studies show relationships but do not establish cause and effect as would be the case with a clinical study. Consequently the Anderson et al. study in no way established that calcium supplementation was in fact a risk factor for developing CAC. plementation increase CAC risk. However it may actually suggest something else not noted in the study-- namely that those getting the most calcium from diet and supplements may also be getting higher levels of other nutrients as well. Other Nutrients Vitamins D and K2 So why would the increased intake of other nutrients be significant Because other nutrients play key roles in the way that calcium is metabolized and where it is delivered in the body. One nutrient that is critical for calcium absorption and metabolism is vitamin D. In fact another recent study found that those with CAC were 3.31 times more likely to be vitamin D deficient. However the researchers in the study wrote Our study did not control for vitamin D intake or seasonal ultraviolet exposure of skin. Likewise clinical research2 has shown that a high intake of vitamin K2 (as MK-7 180 mcg day) is associated VITAMIN RETAILER 39 Calcium Intake Levels Secondly the study categorized calcium intake into five intake levels looking at total calcium intake (food supplements) and intake from supplements specifically. Those with the lowest intake of calcium from diet (306 mg day) and supplements (91 mg day) were at highest risk for CAC while those with the highest intake of calcium from diet (1 280 mg day) and supplements (1 223 mg day) had no increased risk of CAC. At first glance these results might seem counter-intuitive to the study conclusions that calcium sup- DECEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE with reduced arterial calcification reduced arterial stiffness and a reduced incidence of coronary heart disease. Again the Anderson et al. study did not control for vitamin K2 intake. increased risk of coronary atherosclerosis as measured by the CAC score. Another epidemiological study5 looking at the relationship between calcium intake and CAC was published in 2012. Participants included 690 women and 588 men and examined calcium intake (from diet and supplements) over a period of four years. The results were that the study did not find a relationship between high calcium intake and increases CAC--and this was true for both dietary calcium and calcium supplement use. The researchers concluded The evidence is not sufficient to modify current recommendations for calcium intake to protect skeletal health with respect to vascular calcification risk. calcium D used in this study did not seem to alter coronary artery calcified plaque burden among postmenopausal women. Conclusion Don t stop using your calcium supplement. Rather make sure your diet and supplements provides a broad range of other nutrients as well. Personally I would recommend getting 2 000 IU day of vitamin D3 and 180 mcg day of vitamin K2 as MK-7. VR 400-1 400 mg Calcium Not Associated With CAC The final point was made by Anderson et al. within the text of the study which stated Our results suggest that a wide range of calcium intakes between 400 and 1 400 mg day are not associated with CAC over a period of 10 years. Consequently the daily use of supplements providing up to 1 400 mg of calcium per day should not be a cause for concern. Certainly this is well within the tolerable upper intake level for calcium (2 500 mg day for adults 19-50 2 000 mg day for adults 51 ) established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the 3 Institute of Medicine. Rather make sure your diet and supplements provides a broad range of other nutrients as well. Perhaps most interesting was the results of a randomized clinical trial published in a medical journal in 2010 (remember epidemiological studies show relationships while clinical studies show cause and effect).6 This study compared CAC scores after trial completion between postmenopausal women randomized to calcium vitamin D supplementation (1 000 mg of elemental calcium 400 IU vitamin D daily) and women randomized to placebo. The results showed that CAC measurements were similar in women randomized to calcium D supplementation and those receiving placebo. In fact the average score was 91.6 for women receiving calcium D and 100.5 for women receiving placebo. The researchers concluded that doses of Other Research on Supplemental Calcium and CAC When examining the results of any new controversial study I always like to consider the results of similar previous studies. One such epidemiological study4 was published last year in a medical journal. Geraldino-Pardilla et al. conducted a three-year (39 months) study of 145 patients with rheumatoid arthritis without known cardiovascular disease (CVD). CAC was measured in the beginning at just under two years and at 39 months. A CAC score of under 100 was considered desirable since CAC 100 has been shown to be a strong predictor of future CVD. Among the patients studied 28 percent were taking 1 000 mg day of supplemental calcium. Results showed that a CAC score of 100 units was seen in 30 percent of the patients at the beginning of the study and 34 percent at the end of the study. What was interesting however is that beginning CAC scores of 100 units were significantly less frequent in patients receiving the higher dosage (1 000 mg day) of supplemental calcium than in those receiving the lower dosage ( 1 000 mg day) Similarly at the end of the study CAC scores of 100 units were still less frequent in the higher supplemental calcium dose group compared to the lower dose group. The researchers concluded that in this study higher levels of calcium supplementation were not associated with an 40 VITAMIN RETAILER Gene Bruno MS MHS the dean of academics for Huntington College of Health Sciences is a nutritionist herbalist writer and educator. Nearly 35 percent of all U.S. adults and 50 percent of those 60 years of age or older were estimated to have metabolic syndrome in 2011-2012 according to a study in the May 19 2015 issue of JAMA.1 In fact more than three million U.S. cases are reported each year. This syndrome is associated with central obesity (fat in the abdominal area) and insulin resistance. Obesity contributes to high blood pressure high blood cholesterol low HDL or good cholesterol and high blood sugar. Abdominal obesity especially correlates with metabolic risk factors. Metabolic syndrome and its associated condition of insulin resistance pose a major threat to cardiovascular health. Remarkably the public knows very little about this silent but deadly condition and many affected individuals are not even aware that metabolic syndrome is A inflicting severe damage to their arteries and brain cells. The news media and health care providers pay almost no attention to the epidemic of insulin resistance the fundamental cause of metabolic syndrome. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps control the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Normally the digestive system breaks down the foods eaten into sugar (glucose). The blood carries the glucose to the body s tissues where the cells use it as fuel. Glucose enters the cells with the help of insulin. In people with insulin resistance cells don t respond normally to insulin and glucose can t enter the cells as easily. As a result glucose levels in the blood rise despite the body s attempt to control the glucose by churning out more and more insulin. The result is higher than normal levels of insulin in the blood. This can eventually lead to diabetes when the body is unable to make enough insulin to keep the blood glucose within the normal range. Even if levels aren t high enough to be considered diabetes an elevated glucose level can still be harmful. In fact some health care professionals refer to this condition as pre-diabetes. Increased insulin resistance raises triglyceride levels and other blood fat levels. It also interferes with how kidneys work leading to higher blood pressure. These combined effects of insulin resistance are major risk factors for heart disease stroke diabetes and other conditions. Most health care professionals will look for the presence of three or more of the following components when diagnosing metabolic syndrome. Central or abdominal obesity (measured by waist circumference) Men 40 inches or above Women 35 inches or above Triglycerides greater than or equal to 150 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg dL) HDL cholesterol Men Less than 40 mg dL Women Less than 50 mg dL 42 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM DECEMBER 2016 Blood pressure greater than or equal to 130 85 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) Fasting glucose greater than or equal to 100 mg dL2 According to the American Heart Association heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for both men and women worldwide.3 The numbers are staggering Cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of death accounting for more than 17.3 million deaths per year a number that is expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030. In 2013 cardiovascular deaths represented 31 percent of all global deaths with 80 percent of those deaths taking place in low- and middle-income countries. Nearly 801 000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in 2013. That s about one of every three deaths in America. Retailers can be a vital resource for people with metabolic syndrome. If your customers have metabolic syndrome or any of the components of metabolic syndrome aggressive lifestyle changes can delay or even prevent the development of serious health problems. And that starts with advising your customers on making healthful choices about the foods they eat. Part of creating and living a healthy lifestyle is avoiding processed foods. Whole foods in their natural state are your healthiest choices. Whole foods with the simplest preparations are the next best thing. Processed foods should be all but eliminated from the diet for a variety of very compelling reasons. The more processing that a food goes through the more additives and fewer nutrients it contains. Processing removes a great deal (if not all) of the vitamins minerals and fiber in most foods. To make matters worse processing then adds in unhealthy fats a ton of sugar or sugar substitutes and synthetic vitamins and minerals. Most of these ingredients including artificial sweeteners artificial colors hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup are not even recognized as edible by your body. These non-food ingredients are considered toxins and most will end up languishing in your system often stored with fat. Avoiding processing foods in the fight against metabolic syndrome is easier said than done. Processed food is all around us. That said smart supplementation could have a significant impact on metabolic health. A number of nutritional supplements hold great promise for normalizing blood sugar and metabolic control including the following CoQ10 (Ubiquinol) CoQ10 is one of those encompassing dietary supplements with both general health benefits (e.g. anti-aging antioxidant) as well as specific health applications (e.g. cardiovascular health health blood sugar etc.) It is a fundamental component in energy production immune response and protection against damage by free radicals. CoQ10 is part of the mitochondrial electron transport system and is synthesized in all cells. It is essential to the body s production of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This holds special importance for the heart which is loaded with mitochondria and has the body s highest concentration of CoQ10 because of the significant demands made upon it. However aging reduces access to CoQ10. Although it can be obtained from the diet (mainly from fatty fish organ meats and whole grains) as well as synthesized in small amounts both of these routes decline with age. The body s declining capacity to extract and assimilate CoQ10 in later years plays a role in the development of various cardiovascular conditions. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10 and the most highly absorbed. It is directly used in human metabolism as a lipid-soluble antioxidant. While standard CoQ10 (ubiquinone) supplements can be converted into ubiquinol in the body this conversion can be less efficient in some individuals based on age genetics blood sugar status or level of oxidative stress. Fish Oil The mainstream media has been reporting on the benefits of fish oil for years. Studies have shown that the omega-3s found in fish oil promotes cardiovascular health cognitive health joint health optimal blood sugar levels etc. Omega-3s can be found in flaxseed walnuts and a few other foods. However the most beneficial form of omega-3s containing two fatty acids--EPA and DHA--can be found only in fish. EPA and DHA have a multitude of metabolic health benefits including increased fat burning and improved glucose metabolism.5 In addition EPA and DHA decrease the expression of genes involved in fat storage 6 down-regulate genes involved in inflammation 7 and lower levels of C-reactive protein a marker of inflammation.8 Be aware to take fish oil products from companies that follow strict procedures to eliminate environmental contaminants to assure the highest purity of its fish oil supplements. Magnesium Large studies have linked a magnesium deficiency to high blood pressure while other studies have shown an association between magnesium supplements and improved cardiovascular health. A higher intake of magnesium may reduce the risk of developing high blood sugar. Licorice Root for Cardiovascular Oxidation Certain supplements will help significantly improve cardiovascular health. There is no denying this fact. I highlighted a few here. However there is another relatively unknown ingredient that is supported by brand new revolutionary science that provides unmatched antioxidant properties and powerful cardiovascular health benefits. The ingredient is licorice root and a unique extract that comes from this natural ingredient. Recently the results from a doubleblind placebo-controlled study were published in the scientific journal Food and Nutrition Research.9 The study examined the effect of a unique licorice-root extract on the thickness of the artery wall (carotid intimamedia thickness or CIMT) in individuals with hypercholesterolemia. CIMT is considered a strong indicator of overall cardiovascular and arterial health. People with hypercholesterolemia total cholesterol greater then 240 mg do were randomly allocated to two groups as follows An experimental group that received 200 mg of the licorice root extract and a placebo group that did not receive any licorice root extract. One hundred and ten participants were initially allocated to the two groups. Ultimately 94 completed the study. After one year the study yielded the following results In the experimental group the thickness of artery (CIMT) decreased from 0.92 mm to 0.84 mm. The placebo group CIMT increased from 0.85 to 0.88. In the experimental group total cholesterol decreased from 284 to 262 mm dL. The placebo group total cholesterol decreased from 291 to 289mm dL VITAMIN RETAILER 43 DECEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION In the experimental group the LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased from183 to 173 mm dL. In the placebo group the LDL (bad) cholesterol increased from 177 to 179. HDL or good cholesterol did not change in either group In the experimental group systolic blood pressure decreased from 138 to 125 mmhg. In the placebo group systolic blood pressure increased from 136 to 137. In the experimental group diastolic blood pressure decreased from 92 to 84. In the placebo group diastolic blood pressure increased from 89 to 90. Following one year of licorice root extract consumption mean CIMT total cholesterol LDL levels and blood pressure decreased. This suggests that this ingredient may attenuate the development of oxidation and of related cerebral vascular issues. Because metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors many of which must be determined with lab work this condition is not one that an individual can assess without the help of a health care professional. That said if a person has a large waist circumference and also has elevated triglycerides high blood sugar or high blood pressure they should consider lifestyle changes natural solutions and discuss combined risks with their health care professional as soon as possible. VR terolemic patients decreased CIMT reduced plasma lipid levels and decreased blood pressure. Food Nutr Res. 2016 60 30830-5. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM DECEMBER 2016 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray Activating AMPk a Key Enzyme in Burning Fat B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND Introduction If I told you that weight loss was simply a matter of turning on a key enzyme in the body that would magically burn fat and turn up our metabolism would you believe it Well scientists may have found this master switch for weight loss in the form of an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase or AMPk for short. The activity of this hormone goes a long way in explaining why some people have no problem maintaining their ideal body weight while others seemingly fight a major battle to lose weight and keep it off. the amount of visceral belly fat that we carry. Its activity is also tied to our life expectancy. When we are young AMPk is more activated but as we age the cellular AMPk activation decreases leading to visceral fat accumulation and loss of muscle mass. The good news is that researchers are discovering natural ways to enhance AMPk. Specifically certain dietary strategies and food components greatly influence AMPk activity in a positive way. Not surprisingly these natural approaches hold great promise in the goal of near effortless weight loss as a result. Mitochondrial insufficiency and dysfunction Neurodegeneration Obesity Poor blood sugar control The No. 1 Factor That Influences AMPk Activity The activity of AMPk is influenced by a great many factors including variety of hormones and dietary factors. That said the most important influencer of AMPk activity ultimately appears to be the sensitivity of the cell to the hormone insulin. Hence with insulin resistance there is reduced AMPk activity. Insulin resistance is closely tied to abdominal obesity. If your waist circumference is larger than your hips there is an extremely strong likelihood that you suffer from insulin resistance. As the number and size of fat cells increase they lead to a reduction in the secretion of compounds that VITAMIN RETAILER 45 What is AMPk and Why is it Important AMPk is found inside every cell and serves as a master regulating switch in energy metabolism. Overall the activity of this enzyme plays a major role in determining our body fat composition and especially Consequences of Low AMPk Activity Accelerated aging Chronic inflammation High blood cholesterol and triglycerides Increased visceral belly fat Insulin resistance DECEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NATURALMEDICINE promote insulin action including a novel protein produced by fat cells known as adiponectin. Making matters even worse is that there is also an increase in the secretion of a substance known as resistin that dampens the effect of insulin. Adiponectin increases the activation of AMPk while resistin impairs AMPk activity. So while adiponectin is associated with improved insulin sensitivity and metabolism resistin is associated with poor blood sugar control increased blood lipids and the development of atherosclerosis. All of these effects are due to the influence these compounds have on AMPk activity. So the first step in improving AMPk is working to improve insulin sensitivity. By doing so the process results in increasing adiponectin levels and lowering resistin levels which in turn lead to AMPk activation. Simple right Highly viscous dietary fiber Good oils Olive oil (and polyphenols) EPA DHA Medium chain triglycerides Mitochondrial enhancers Alpha lipoic acid Carnitine Coenzyme Q10 Creatine Various flavonoids polyphenols Green tea (EGCG) Resveratrol Curcumin Genistein Anthocyanins Procyanidolic oligomers Numerous botanicals Mulberry leaf Green coffee bean extract Cinnamon leaf extract. Berberine is an alkaloid found in goldenseal root barberry bark Oregon grape root and coptis (goldthread) root. It is also one of the most exciting natural products in current medical research is berberine. What scientific research has focused on in the last decade is building an impressive amount of clinical research in the use of berberine in lowering blood lipids and blood pressure and improving blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Berberine exhibits a number of beneficial mechanisms to produce these effects including an ability to activate AMPk. Berberine is showing impressive results in clinical trials evaluating its effects in type 2 diabetes elevated blood lipids and high blood pressure. Recently the Journal of Ethnopharmacology published a detailed review of the 27 clinical studies with berberine in these disorders that provided clear answer questions on its safety and efficacy. The researchers conducting the meta-analysis concluded that berberine has comparable therapeutic effect on type 2 diabetes elevated blood lipids and hypertension with no serious side effect or toxicity. Furthermore the review indicated that berberine combined with conventional drugs in these conditions is safe and can produce better results than the drugs alone. Berberine showed particularly impressive results in clinical trials evaluating its effects in type 2 diabetes. When berberine was compared to oral hypoglycemic drugs used in type 2 diabetes like metformin glipizide and rosiglitazone there was no statistical significance between treatment of berberine and these drugs. In other words the clinical results seen with berberine are on par with the drugs but with no significant side effects. In one double-blind study of 116 patients with type 2 diabetes berberine at a dosage of 500 mg twice a day lowered fasting blood sugar from just above the range of being classified as diabetes (i.e. 126 mg dL) to normal blood sugar levels (less than 100 mg dL) in most subjects. Berberine has also been examined as a weight-loss aid in two double- Other Recommendations to Activate AMPk In addition to viscous dietary fiber there are a number of very important steps to activate AMPk. Most notable are reducing total calorie intake and regular vigorous exercise. It is also interesting that many components of the traditional Mediterranean diet activate AMPk. In particular olive oil resveratrol from red wine and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish oil. In terms of dietary supplements to activate AMPk it looks like in terms of promoting weight loss the best just might be alpha-lipoic acid (ALA). To better clarify the weight loss promoting effects of ALA and omega-3 fatty acids 97 overweight or obese women were divided into four groups. One group served as the control group while the others were given either ALA 300 mg EPA 1.3 g or ALA 300 mg and EPA 1.3 g. Results showed ALA supplementation alone or in combination with EPA enhanced the effects of dieting. The control group lost an average of 11.44 pounds the EPA group 11.88 pounds the ALA group 15.4 pounds and the ALA EPA group 14.3 pounds. Hence ALA contributed approximately 3 pounds of extra weight loss over the course of the 10 weeks. The effect is thought to be due to activation of AMPk. Improving Insulin Sensitivity Improving insulin sensitivity is most successfully done with a combination of lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity and improving diet and nutrition and targeted nutritional supplementation. One of the most important dietary and supplement strategies is increasing the amount of water-soluble viscous dietary fiber. This type of fiber is associated with increasing the sensitivity of tissues to insulin and improving the uptake of glucose by the muscles liver and other tissues thereby preventing a sustained elevation of blood sugar. Particularly good sources of water-soluble viscous fiber are legumes (beans) oat bran nuts seeds psyllium seed husks pears apples and most vegetables. For people with definite insulin resistance and poor blood sugar control I would also recommend taking a highly viscous dietary fiber supplement such as PGX before meals. Factors That Influence AMPk Inhibitors of AMPK High fat diet Caloric excess Sedentary lifestyle Aging Activators of AMPk Intense exercise Calorie restriction Thyroid hormone Adiponectin 46 VITAMIN RETAILER Botanicals to Activate AMPk There are a lot of botanicals that also activate AMPk. As a vegetarian did that concern you How is the merger working out Answer Question As for philanthropy you stated you were interested in helping those close to home. Please describe the charitable work the company is involved with. Our company values stem from four fundamental pillars Nourish Nurture Inspire and Educate. Without the support of our community our environment our mentors and inspiration we wouldn t be where we are today. As we grow so does our ability to give back by partnering with some incredible organizations. We 1) Nourish through Conscious Alliance a Boulderbased non-profit focusing on hunger relief and youth empowerment in some of the nation s poorest areas. 2) Inspire through eTown a local non-profit on a mission to educate entertain and inspire a diverse audience through music and conversation in order to create a socially responsible world. 3) Nurture through the Thorne Nature Experience a Boulder CO-based nonprofit on a mission to build Earth stewardship by connecting youth and nature. 4) Educate with Naturally Boulder a collective of natural product companies across Colorado who meet to collaborate share ideas and educate the next generation of entrepreneurs. Answer We deliberately selected Hormel Foods (makers of Skippy Peanut Butter) for two reasons. One they didn t want to change or disrupt anything that we were doing including our product integrity or our brand mission. Two they could truly help us grow operationally in a meaningful way. The biggest threat to our business has been maintaining high-quality consistent and safe food products as we continue to scale the business. As a vegetarian I saw this as the perfect opportunity to provide more plant-based protein options to consumers with mindfully sourced ingredients. The merger has been going exactly as expected with additional resources where we need them and a hands-off approach to our culture mission vision and values. Answer Question Looking at the beginnings of Justin s it seems that your business started serendipitously. However creating a successful brand isn t easy. How did you do it Justin s began as a farmer s market local brand in 2004. It started out of frustration for lack of variety from a passion to create nut butter options and with the intention of disrupting the category. Good timing and hard work converged with the introductions of nut butter squeeze packs and organic chocolate PB cups brought Justin s to the forefront of the market. Due to the collaborative nature of the natural food companies here in Boulder I was able to gain access to some of the smartest and most successful founders and professionals of some iconic natural food companies (Celestial Seasonings WhiteWave Rudi s Horizon IZZE etc.). Through 52 VITAMIN RETAILER Answer Question How will Hormel help Justin s grow As small companies scale to become medium and large organizations it requires a very deliberate and systematic approach to food safety quality and back-end organization.
