magazine (last year Lifestyle supported or co-sponsored more than 70 different events) it s rarely the cocktails or light bites that ultimately stand out for the editorial team. Although to be fair if Banyon Air Service hosted Tapas on the Tarmac every night I would try to claim squatter s rights somewhere at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. For those of us who bring this print product to life it s often the people we meet along the way whose stories resonate long after a monthly issue runs its course. Over the last half of 2016 Lifestyle began sharing more of those stories as part of a renewed commitment to give readers additional insights into the communities we cover. We had the pleasure of introducing you last summer to a 10-time kickboxing champion looking to become the next king of the heavyweight boxing division (Parkland resident Tyrone Spong). We regularly asked South Florida s top chefs to share their kitchen secrets as part of our new What s Cooking department. In October we raised a glass to the most acclaimed playwright in the region Michael McKeever. In December we introduced you to eight local women who impact countless lives through their selfless philanthropic efforts. We also touched base with a host of celebrities including Miami s own Mr. 305 Pitbull. Lifestyle even made its national TV debut. An episode of the reality show WAGS Miami featured our creative team photographing Vanessa Cole for the November 2016 cover--a shoot that we staged on a 164-foot yacht. There certainly are worse ways to spend an afternoon at work. There s also no better place to be than Lifestyle when it comes to celebrating our diverse communities. Time and again the people we profiled humbled us with their candor. We re honored to share these stories with our readers and we promise to add to that tradition in 2017. It starts with our January issue which includes a feature on Sunny Isles Beach resident Belinda Stronach president of The Stronach Group who has the horse racing world buzzing over the Jan. 28 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park. And it continues throughout our winter issues which have some major surprises in store. We thank our faithful readers and loyal advertisers for continuing to support Lifestyle. Here s to a healthy and prosperous 2017. Enjoy the January issue. Steven Manolis T he recent Art Basel Miami Beach drew thousands of collectors artists gallery curators and art enthusiasts from around the globe. Julia Black Andrews was all of the above driving south to find inspiration--and possibly a guest curator or artist--for a future exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The museum which turns 20 this month operates on the theory that art is everywhere says Andrews the executive director. It shouldn t be intimidating nor isolated to a big city. Every three months the museum changes its exhibits to expose South Floridians to new art and local national and international artists. Until Feb. 28 the main gallery s white walls will be decorated with 50 large canvases splashed and stroked with vibrant colors the work of Miami artist J. Steven Manolis. Andrews curated the exhibit that will hang in the back gallery until Jan. 28. The collection of painted canvases called Fifty is a tribute to the United States by Coral Springs resident and Venezuelan native Isabel Perez. On Jan. 6 the east gallery will display the work of local Advanced Placement high school students as chosen by the Broward County Public Schools superintendent. From Jan. JANUARY 2017 LMGFL.COM 17 22 eight Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery students of the Dalai Lama will visit on their Sacred Art Tour to share traditional Tibetan arts and culture. The 9 300-square-foot nonprofit museum (2855 Coral Springs Drive) opened in 1997. It is attached to the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts and was originally a gym but it disaffiliated early from both the center and the city. Through the glass doors is a vast modern space that is filled with people music and conversations. We don t whisper we discuss things she says. The museum frequently hosts artist receptions lectures and workshops. Art classes for children and adults are available year-round. This summer the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary by showcasing its permanent collection which boasts more than 150 pieces. Internationally acclaimed artist Yuroz recently donated an original oil painting Meditation Series Dancing Trees Composition 01 valued at 175 000. Andrews an artist herself says she understands the importance of self-expression and hopes to continue finding work that resonates with the community. I m excited to see where we can take it she says. 14 TOP OF THE BLOG BY RACHEL SOBEL BLOGGER OF WHINEANDCHEEZITS.COM NEW YEAR NEW PERSPECTIVE here s no denying all of the feelings that come along with a new year. It s a chance to take a new perspective. We reflect on the previous year and how much has changed. Some of us even make New Year s resolutions that include the usual things such as eating healthier making it to the gym more often and being more patient with our children. (Just remember Rome wasn t built in a day.) It s almost cathartic you know like purging your closet and finally getting rid of the jeans you saved for the past decade thinking one day they d fit. (Spoiler alert not happening.) For me the theme of this new year embodies peace and not just the kind achieved when I have five minutes to shower alone in an empty house after school drop-off without little hands opening the shower curtain asking me to change the channel on the television in the living room. I ve talked a lot about kindness T in many articles this past year but I think now more than ever we could all use a little more of it. We are after all a year wiser-- unless you are talking about Common Core Math. In that case I m totally behind. Our world has undergone tremendous change and we ve faced many challenges as a country. So I m vowing this year to exude more kindness more empathy and more patience. I ll do more small things like paying it forward in the Starbucks drive-through and letting someone order before me at Parlour Vegan Bakery even though I m literally salivating for its chocolate peanut butter cupcake. I ll also have more conversations with my child about the importance of selflessness and humility as she s whining because the batteries in her Furby are out of juice. And when you really need that extra dose of peace and harmony to do all of these things do something for yourself that fosters it. Like meditation on one of many beautiful beaches surrounding Palm Beach County. Or get your tush into a yoga class. I have literally had complete mood changes just from walking in the door at Yoga Journey. Do whatever is necessary to achieve a level of peace so that you can spread it to others--because that s exactly what we need in 2017. BRU S ROOM The Boca Symphonia Big-City Sound Boca Symphonia brings musicians from around the world BY ALYSSA FISHER fter attending her first Boca Symphonia concerto in 2007 Carole Boucard was so impressed that she joined its board of directors. To her New York Carole Boucard City was the center of the cultural universe and only bustling metropolitan cities attracted symphonies. Who would ve expected she recalls thinking that Boca Raton had a world-class orchestra She had joined the Boca Raton Resort & Club as its public relations director earlier that year and soon supporting the Symphonia became a second career. Last month after almost a decade of promoting and fundraising and celebrating renowned musicians she was elected president of the board. I don t think people realize how amazing it is to have the caliber of musicians we have here she says. It really contributes to our reputation as a top tourist destination and as a place where people want to come and live. You generally want to look for a place that has quality arts. Entertainment is a big deal. A Otherwise you re going to be bored to death. The Symphonia ( a gem of an orchestra she says) has a simple goal to share great music with its audience. Musicians come from around the world to play with the symphony. Upcoming is Baroque Brilliance the second concert in its Connoisseur Concert Series on Jan. 8 at 3 p.m. at The Roberts Theatre at Andrews Hall on the campus of Saint Andrew s School. The performance includes Brett Karlin (artistic director and conductor of the Master Chorale of South Florida) as guest conductor and Sherezade Panthaki (an international soprano performer) as guest soloist. Boucard created the board s Lunch and Learn fundraising event and has been actively involved in the Meet the Orchestra program where families bring their children to Symphonia rehearsals. She has more time to dedicate to the Symphonia since leaving the Boca Resort in 2014 and becoming a residential real-estate agent at Coldwell Banker where she makes her own schedule. Boucard remembers setting up a luncheon when she first joined the board. When the symphony started to play she froze. To listen to them play is just--I can t even tell you. I love their music and it s a pleasure she says. I feel like I m not working. I m doing something I truly love. 435 Plaza Real Boca Raton 561.620.2540 sub-culture.org dubliner The tavern features an Irishinspired menu with favorites chips and bangers and mash. Here are three procedures offered at Reviv. 1) Hair loss treatment The scalp is cleansed and an anesthesia block is given to prevent pain. The PRP is injected into the affected area and then the hair is washed. Clients may drive themselves home without assistance. 2) Osteoarthritis treatment Concentrated PRP is injected into and around the point of injury strengthening the body s natural healing signal. (Because a client s own blood is used there s no risk of a transmissible infection and a low risk of allergic reaction.) The and takes about 30 minutes. Most people return to work and usual activities right after the procedure. 3) Collagen induction therapy The face is washed a topical anesthesia is applied and the face is washed again. A sterile microneedling pen is glided over treated areas leaving small channels in the skin. Finally PRP is rubbed into the skin. Expect no pain but there will be redness for a day or two. The Boca Raton resident began piano lessons at age 5 when his parents Kim and Todd learned music was good for children s development. He made it look so easy Todd recalls. The teacher said he had a rare talent--perfect pitch. So at 7 years old we handed him an acoustic guitar because if he was going to be a musician he couldn t carry a piano around. Mason still takes weekly guitar lessons as well as voice classes. He also taught himself bass and drums plus he writes his own music. He was discovered at age 11 during a Miami audition where hundreds of performers sang for the chance to work with professional mentors. Mason--who earned one of the coveted few spots--was matched with producer and songwriter Marc Hudson. As soon as I met Mason I knew he had something says Hudson who has worked with Aerosmith Ozzy Osbourne and Ringo Starr. After the pair co-wrote and recorded Do it Now a song about bullying Hudson said it was like working with Steven Tyler. The 10th-grader at Saint Andrew s School in Boca is the lead singer and guitarist of The Mason Pace Band which plays locally and statewide. The band performs pop alternative rock --original music with selections from One Direction Van Halen and Green Day. And yes there are groupies. Dad recalls the band s show at the Broward County Convention Center during an international volleyball competition There were 1 500 high school girls screaming and reaching out. Last year the band performed at Mason s homecoming game. People at school know I m in the music business but they treat me like everyone else he insists. Oh and girls-- he s available I m a single Pringle he says. Talent runs in the family. Mom Kim placed third in the Miss Fitness America contest and Todd is a former competitive swimmer and gold medalist at the Pan American Games. Kim takes care of Mason s social media and publicity while Todd is the roadie manager and booking agent. Our ultimate goal is to get a record deal Todd says. If it works out great if it doesn t that s OK too. We re really proud of him. Mason s hair has been compared to Robert Plant s and Peter Frampton s--and is a source of contention in the Pace household. Says Todd We like it with some poof so it s a little fluffy and it shows off his curls. Says Mason I like it more controlled so I don t look like I put my finger in a socket. 24 JANUARY 2017 LMGFL.COM COMING SOON JUNE 2017 MSC MERAVIGLIA IS NOT JUST ANY NEW EXTRAORDINARY SHIP BECAUSE THIS IS NOT JUST ANY CRUISE Book now and be among the first to cruise the Mediterranean aboard the NEW MSC Meraviglia the biggest and most innovative cruise ship ever built by MSC Cruises. This is the best part of owning a bar he says. Drinks are on the house. This is the enthusiastic anything-goes attitude that last September led him and his wife Lisa to become co-owners of The Wishing Well a staple of Royal Palm Place on Mizner Boulevard. The Parkland couple had never owned a bar and never intended to but one great night at the Irish pub with a few friends from the Berman Law Group was all it took. The group of five known as the Berman Team saw a great business with untapped potential. The 16-year-old joint with whiskey bottle-lined walls wood accents and a full-size well at its core had a rowdy reputation but was beloved by JANUARY 2017 LMGFL.COM regulars for its homey vibe and lengthy happy hour which spanned from 3 to 7 p.m. The deal was sealed in what felt like seconds. Normally when we get something in our heads we make it happen says Lisa an agent at Travers Miran Realty. We re all strong personalities. It s hard to resist the Berman Team. The Wishing Well will remain a traditional Irish pub and sports bar but with a more upscale feel ... a little flair she says. Early on the group divided the one bar into three an upstairs lounge for private parties (and future whiskey tastings) inside for happy hour food and live music and an outside bar that skews a little younger equipped with big screen TVs and a DJ. It s just the place you can come to and get anything from your cosmopolitan to your favorite Irish beers. It s got something for everyone Joe says. The aforementioned green tea shots a mixture of Jameson Irish Whiskey peach schnapps and sour mix is one of the most popular drinks and the couple s current favorite. They recently hired a new head chef a true Irishman to create a Celticfusion menu ( bar food with flair ) served until 2 a.m. There s also an Eggg Slut brunch every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring an elaborate bottomless bloody mary bar. The pub holds 350 people and there are talks of moving in next door to expand the upstairs lounge. We have to Lisa says. It s getting very very packed here. The couple is pleased with but not surprised by the early success. Joe likens the atmosphere to the bar in the sitcom Cheers --an everybody knows your name vibe. It s a nice feeling when you come in and see the owners and we re talking and buying a round of drinks for our regulars. If you come here you re going to see people you know--and you re going to meet a lot of people. A giant kraken is now affixed to the wall above the bar to represent a partnership with Kraken rum and more enhancements are in the works. However locals won t lose the iconic wishing well. A record crowd of more than 135 000 awaited the 141st running of the Preakness Stakes the second leg in thoroughbred racing s annual Triple Crown. Appropriately enough the honor that day of announcing Riders up --the ceremonial command for jockeys to mount their horses--had fallen to Belinda Stronach the whipsmart businesswoman who may be the sport s best bet to re-imagine its potential. It s a wager that s shared by more than just horse racing s hierarchy. In the minutes before post time at the Preakness a young employee in a yellow raincoat approached the chairman and president of The Stronach Group whose portfolio of legendary racing and gaming entities includes Pimlico Santa Anita Park in Southern California and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. He thanked her for taking such an interest in the sport. It proves he told her that someone cares about the industry and about our future. For me that was so meaningful says the 50-year-old daughter of Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach who founded the global automotive parts company Magna International. This is truly a stakeholder industry it means something to the owners the jockeys the trainers the track employees. We re the largest owner and operator of race tracks in North America and so many people depend on us for their livelihood. It s really up to us to modernize this sport. Last year a Harris poll revealed that horse racing ranked as the 13th most popular sport among Americans--behind swimming and track. Newsweek reported in a May 2016 story that money wagered on horse racing in the United States dropped to 10.6 billion in 2015 down more than 4.5 billion from 12 years earlier. The industry is declining as a whole and there is consolidation says the part-time Sunny Isles Beach resident. The sport has failed to create a reason for people to want to come back to the track and it hasn t invested enough in technology to keep the younger generation engaged. But [The Stronach Group] is growing within a declining industry. What we re doing is looking at this not just as a racing and gaming company but as an entertainment company first and foremost. We re competing for time and attention with football baseball and other live events. We have to create and curate that compelling customer experience--and horse racing and wagering can be at the core of it. ... Right now the Triple Crown includes marquee races and then there s the Breeders Cup. But there isn t much awareness beyond those events for the general public. So we re creating new products. Exhibit A is set for Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park--the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Billed as the world s richest thoroughbred race surpassing the annual Dubai World Cup and its purse of 10 million Pegasus is the model for what Stronach envisions as the kind of go-big-or-go-home event that can turn the sport on 36 JANUARY 2017 LMGFL.COM its ear. LMGFL.COM JANUARY 2017 39 NO WAY OUT S BY CLARISSA BUCH ILLUSTRATION BY FRANK PAPANDREA Local escape rooms task adventure seekers with finding their way out of the darkness omething has gone horribly wrong. A science experiment has taken an unexpected turn--and now you re locked inside a laboratory. Worse still the lights are out. What happens next is up to you. No this isn t a scene from a PlayStation virtual reality game. It s a storyline from a live-action escape room the popular form of entertainment that literally leaves a team of people in the dark. Participants have an allotted amount of time to find clues and solve puzzles that enable them to escape the room and ultimately win the game. Greg Kormendi owner of QQuest in Pompano Beach and Think Escape Games in Fort Lauderdale is one of the first to bring the dark-room adventures to South Florida. Born in Hungary where escape games are widely popular Kormendi and his father thought it was time to bring the adventure across the Atlantic. You see them a lot around Europe he says. I didn t know what the reaction would be here but because I like to build different things I thought I would try it. Though many of Kormendi s storylines are eerie he describes the activity as lighthearted. It s meant to foster a team-building experience with groups of friends family or both. The idea is to get into a room and work together to successfully get out in less than 60 minutes he says. It makes a team come together or fall apart. Either way it puts them to the test. Kormendi s stories are all one of a kind. Though some draw influence from mainstream movies each one has a distinct narrative. I try to come up with a basic script and theme for a game he explains. Then it s about organization and letting my imagination run. Sometimes we think of things that can t be possible but then you envision it from a different angle to find a way to make it happen. Regardless of the story players are usually tasked with challenges such as finding objects hidden around the room. Each object found gives players a clue to the next object needed. Some might be hidden under a block in the floor and others might be attached to a chair in the room. But the key to every game Kormendi says is its need for a paradigm shift. People usually look at it so convinced that it s one way he says. But then that light bulb goes off. They realize it s actually totally different than they thought and that s what expands their mind. None of the games require physical labor. Participants interact with various objects using their minds to fill in the gaps. For example there might be an X-ray machine he explains. The only way to see the screen behind it is to put on special glasses. When you first look at the machine all you see is that. But once you have the glasses on you see the message on the screen that gets you one step further. Kormendi says that some first-timers are successful but many are not. The point of the game isn t to make it out in time he says. The point is to go through it and experience it. Even if they don t make the time limit we let them stay in there to finish but help guide them through. Escape game rooms have been around since the early 2000s but they recently made their way to the States. Now there s close to 1 400 escape rooms housed in 277 cities and 53 countries. As popularity continues to rise Kormendi believes it s just the beginning. It taps into a human curiosity that we all have he says. It makes you see the world a little differently. You have your two hands your mind and the other people around you. Now you have to make something happen. It brings people back to a fundamental human connection and snaps them out of our cyber world for an hour. 40 JANUARY 2017 LMGFL.COM Great Escapes Check out these escape room destinations in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
