Not that it matters much to me I generally refer to my heritage as a European Blend. But the revelation coincidently came later on the day that I first learned about The Little Book of Hygge Danish Secrets to Happy Living which is popular throughout Europe and is quickly gaining attention in the States. Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish concept that cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life--think fireplaces dinner with close friends candles burning hot chocolate and apparently woolen socks. Whatever helps make those long dark Danish winter days and nights more cozy and pleasant is a national obsession. The book s author a Dane named Meik Wiking pronounced viking (yes that s his real name) is CEO of The Happiness Research Institute Research Associate for Denmark at the World Database of Happiness and founding member of The Latin American Network for Wellbeing and Quality of Life Policies. Last year The World Happiness Index ranked Denmark the leader of the pack of the happiest people on Earth. Contributing to the joy Wiking said in a Happiness Research I Institute report is the Danes high level of work satisfaction. In the report Cecilie Eriksen a PhD from Aarhus University in Denmark noted that the purpose people find in their work has undergone a historical shift. Historically the reason to go to work has to a large extent been exclusively to feed your family. For many people nowadays work is much more than that. We work because we feel that it matters--both to society and to who we are. Even though purpose can be difficult to pinpoint Eriksen continued it is of absolute importance if we want to understand job satisfaction. If we increase an individual s sensation of purpose by 10 points overall job satisfaction goes up by 2.6 points. Thus meaning proves to be the most important factor for job satisfaction. In fact it has a greater effect on job satisfaction than salary results and colleagues combined he said. Of course the U.S. is not Denmark as was discussed during last year s presidential debates but I think the idea of job satisfaction as studied by The Happiness Research Institute can easily apply to the natural products industry helping others achieve better health and well being is a source of pride and something that matters very much to all. And if that isn t enough hygge for you try sitting in front of a fireplace lighting some candles sipping some herbal tea and putting on your wooliest socks. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center a few of the species of elder include dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus) and European elder (Sambucus nigra) with the latter being utilized in the medical field. European elder can grow up to 30 feet tall and one can obtain its benefits through both the flowers themselves and the berries. In fact as a result of all that elderberry has to offer it has been gaining so much momentum that manufacturers are not only producing products containing this plant but sharing its wonders to retailers for the enjoyment of consumers. E BY NICHOLAS SARACENO Elderberry History & Benefits The powers of elderberry date back years but many may not be aware that they go as far back into history as the famous physician Hippocrates. Black elderberry Sambucus nigra L. of the family Caprifoliaceae is a small tree that grows in Europe North America and North Africa said Britta Busch key account manager at BerryPharma by Iprona a company based in Italy that develops polyphenol products made from elderberry. There are over five regional species and 30 subspecies of elderberry around the world. The European black elderberry is the most widely used species with the longest historical documentation. One of the earliest recorded historical mentions of black elderberry dates back about 2 000 years to Hippocrates. The traditional use of black elderberry as a natural remedy against many ailments is well documented. Precisely it has been noted to provide immune support contain antioxidants and help the cardiovascular system. Black elderberry polyphenols as well as pectins have been shown to upregulate factors associated with the functioning of the immune system said Busch. In a study published in 2012 in the journal PLoS One a black elderberry extract was observed to increase the beta-interferon inducing activity of the bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus in dendritic cells.1 This led to the conclusion that black elderberry 8 VITAMIN RETAILER may exert antiviral and immune-enhancing activity. Dendritic cells are vital to the human immune system as they are tasked with processing antigens and presenting these antigens on their surface to other white blood cells which are activated in the process. In another study the immune-modulating activities of peptic polymers isolated from elderberries were studied. The researcher found that black elderberry pectins showed potent dose-dependent complement fixating activity and macrophage stimulating activity. The black elderberry polysaccharide arabinogalactan is among the components responsible for this action. 2 Kris Wear owner of World of Nutrition in Idaho Vitamin Retailer s 2016 Retailer of the Year agreed on elderberry s benefits. We have been selling elderberry as a cold flu remedy for nearly 15 years she said. It has amazing anti-viral benefits. Beyond immune health Busch also referred to black elderberry polyphenols such as anthocyanins which are excellent free-radical scavengers. She added tests with human cell cultures confirmed that black elderberry anthocyanins were incorporated in the cell membrane and cytosol and conferred significant protective effects against oxidative insult. 3 Popularity Growth & Market Status So how exactly has the elderberry trend caught on Essentially it comes down to consumers needs. Immunity and resistance against disease and colds was the second greatest health concern registered by 7 000 consumers in a recent 2016 survey.4 Recent studies position black elderberry as the solution noted Busch. Statistically the number of respiratory infections is increasing due to increased travel mobility within and among different populations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention respiratory infections affect up to 20 percent of all travelers with upper respiratory infections including colds being more common than lower respiratory infections.5 In the USA alone there were over 750 million air travelers in 2014 an increase of about 11.8 percent from 2009. Approximately 152.5 million travelers had a respiratory infection warranting a visit to their physician. In 2015 at the 21st Annual International Integrative Medicine Conference in Melbourne Australia Associate Professor Evelin Tiralongo and Dr. Shirley Wee from Griffith s Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ) actually presented results of a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trail that they conducted with 312 airline passengers traveling from Australia to another destination. According to Tiralongo we found that most cold episodes occurred in the placebo group but the difference between the placebo and active group was not significant. However the placebo group had a significantly higher number of cold episode days and the symptom score in the placebo group over these days was also significantly higher. Both Busch6 and medicalxpress.com referenced the study. From a retailer s perspective elderberry is showing positive strides and is being used by all age groups. Elderberry has gained popularity year after year said Wear. [This includes] everything from the traditional syrup dried elderberries for people to make their own syrup tablets to lozenges and the newest product we are carrying Sambucus water enhancer. If one were to look strictly at the stats there is even a positive correlation between sales and elderberry product purchases. According to the market review for WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2017 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com cvc for info about this advertiser TRENDINGNOW the year 2015 published by the American Botanical Council in their journal Herbalgram consumers in the United States spent 6.92 billion on dietary supplements in 2015.7 This is a 7.5 percent increase the previous year said Busch. Consumers spent about 480 million dollars more on dietary supplements in 2015 than in 2014 the twelfth consecutive year of growth. Black elderberry supplements which are used to naturally boost the immune system and fight upper respiratory infections like colds showed a 27.33 percent increase in sales through U.S.mainstream multi-outlet channels compared to 2014. On the list of 40 topselling dietary supplements sold through natural channels elderberry supplements were up by 11.43 percent. It started in the 1980s when the interest in natural alternatives and the OTC-industry was growing. The first research only looked at mono-substances extracts only standardized to polyphenols as high as possible but neglecting other compounds of the natural fruit which are crucial for the bioaccessibility and metabolism of the active compound said Busch. In recent studies more holistic nutrition respecting the original fruit matrix which includes vitamins minerals and other trace elements are undertaken. It is not the total polyphenol content which is the key to effect but a synergistic action of fruit compounds in the black elderberry. Magnesium as well as other compounds leads to co-stimulating enzymatic processes. This is why Iprona s membrane filtered extracts are growing in popularity. However although new developments have allowed for the elderberry industry to be on the rise retailers must be aware of product quality. Knowing the ins and outs of specific products (concerning elderberry and beyond) will not only allow retailers to properly educate their customers but will also establish a sense of consumer confidence. As with anything in this industry the biggest challenge for health food stores is losing business to the mass market selling inferior products and then the public thinking that they aren t effective said Wear. C East Brunswick NJ 08816 JanetP VRMmedia.com Prevagen Marketers Charged With Deceptive Cognitive Improvement Claims he Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and New York State Attorney General (NYAG) have charged the marketers of the dietary supplement Prevagen with making false and unsubstantiated claims that the product improves memory provides cognitive benefits and is clinically shown to work. The extensive national advertising campaign for Prevagen including TV spots on national broadcast and cable networks such as CNN Fox News and NBC featured charts depicting rapid and dramatic improvement in memory for users of the product. The complaint alleges the marketers relied on a study that failed to show that Prevagen works better than a placebo on any measure of cognitive function. The marketers of Prevagen preyed on the fears of older consumers experiencing age-related memory loss said Jessica Rich director of the FTC s Bureau of Consumer Protection. But one critical thing these marketers forgot is that their claims need to be backed up by real scientific T evidence. The Federal court complaint alleges that the defendants enticed consumers to spend anywhere from 24 to 68 for bottles of 30 supplement pills by touting the product s active ingredient--a protein derived from jellyfish--to improve memory and reduce memory problems associated with aging. The complaint notes that the supplement is widely available at major retailers such as Amazon CVS the Vitamin Shoppe and Walgreens and is also sold directly on the defendants websites. The defendants product sales have topped 165 million. The agencies allege that the defendants marketing claims have violated the FTC Act and New York state laws. The agencies are seeking refunds for consumers who bought the deceptively marketed product. The marketing for Prevagen is a clear-cut fraud from the label on the bottle to the ads airing across the country said NYAG Eric Schneiderman. It s particularly unacceptable that this company has targeted vulnerable citizens like seniors in its advertising for a product that costs more than a week s groceries but provides none of the health benefits that it claims. The agencies have charged corporate defendants Quincy Bioscience Holding Company Inc. Quincy Bioscience LLC Prevagen Inc. doing business as Sugar River Supplements and Quincy Bioscience Manufacturing LLC. The agencies also charged the two co-founders of the company CEO Michael Beaman and President Mark Underwood who appeared in infomercials for the product. For more information visit www.ftc.gov. Increased consumer affordability coupled with rising health concerns should drive global vitamin E market size. Rising applications scope in pharmaceutical industry for treating Alzheimer s infection diabetes night cramps Parkinson s disease epilepsy traumatic brain injury multiple sclerosis cerebral palsy and Huntington s disease is evaluated to fuel industry development. Rich food sources include vegetable oils sunflower seeds peanuts broccoli spinach and avocado. Naturally sourced products are gaining wide acceptance in anti-aging V creams lotions sunscreens lipsticks and creams. U.S. vitamin E market size for functional food & beverages was worth more than 50 U.S. million in 2015. Rising concern to maintain immunity and health along with increasing consumer preference for functional foods will benefit the industry growth. Rising health care cost is among the key reasons fueling dietary supplement demand in U.S. Germany and U.K. Cosmetic applications accounted for more than five percent of the total demand in 2015 and are likely to witness fastest growth. Cosmetic industry is projected to be an attractive application segment owing to its essential properties including improvement in UV protection and moisture content. It also helps in increasing sunscreen ingredients effectiveness and preventing melanin deposits. Initiatives from the government to create awareness toward green and eco-friendly and additionally healthy procedures which are related to organic or natural products may favor the vitamin E market share. Rising regulatory compliances pertaining to toxic chemical additives inclusion in personal care and food and beverage products should fuel product demand. Raw material shortage along with supply demand imbalance may impact vitamin E market price trend. For more information visit www.gminsights.com. Study Finds EPA and DHA Lower Risk of Coronary Heart Disease PA and DHA omega3s reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) according to results of a new comprehensive metaanalysis published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings and sponsored by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED). Among randomized controlled trials (RCTs) there was a statistically significant reduction in CHD risk in higher risk populations including Sixteen percent in those with high triglycerides and 14 percent in those with high LDL cholesterol. A non-statistically significant 6 percent risk reduction among all populations in RCTs a finding supported by a statistically significant 18 percent reduced risk of CHD among prospective cohort studies. What makes this paper unique is that it looked at the effects of EPA and DHA on coronary heart disease specifically which is an important nuance considering coronary heart disease accounts for half of all cardiovascular deaths in the U.S. said Dr. Dominik Alexander lead author and principal epidemiologist for EpidStat. The 6 percent reduced risk among RCTs coupled with an 18 percent risk reduction in prospective cohort studies--which tend to include more real-life dietary scenarios over longer periods-- tell a compelling story about the importance of EPA and DHA omega-3s for cardiovascular health. FDA issued on August 12 2016 a revised draft guidance for industry titled Dietary Supplements New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues. This revised draft guidance replaced draft guidance of the same name initially issued by FDA in July 2011. In the 2016 revised draft guidance FDA identifies two goals improving the rate of compliance with the NDI notification requirement and improving the quality of notifications. In its comments AHPA recognizes some improvements in the revised draft guidance compared to the 2011 draft guidance said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. However AHPA continues to have some of the same concerns about the content of the 2016 revised draft guidance and has additional concerns related to revisions in the 2016 revised draft guidance. AHPA noted in its comments that the 2016 draft NDI guidance would unnecessarily burden the dietary supplement industry and dietary supplement consumers and is wholly inconsistent with the economic and small business analyses prepared in connection with the NDI notification regulations in 21 CFR 190.6. According to Duffy MacKay ND senior vice president scientific and regulatory affairs CRN We have been waiting more than five years for this document and after close review consider it a step in the right direction. We re appreciative that the revised draft guidance appropriately addresses several issues raised by industry in response to the 2011 draft S guidance and provided a better explanation of the agency s thinking but there are still items we take issue with. CRN takes issue with the agency s approach to evaluating evidence of pre-DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994) marketing in order to create that authoritative list as well as its interpretation of other exceptions to NDI notification requirements. CRN remains concerned that a narrow interpretation of these exclusions will result in unnecessary NDI notifications for products with a long history of safe use. Also at issue is FDA s interpretation of sections of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) and DSHEA relating to the definition of dietary ingredient. Said MacKay In particular the agency s interpretation on this does not honor the spirit of DSHEA. One of ABC s several primary concerns with the 2016 draft guidance is FDA s focus on--and request for significant information on-- the dietary supplement product itself. ABC set forth that the language in the NDI provision in DSHEA speaks to the dietary ingredient versus the finished dietary supplement product. ABC also references historic FDA actions that support the position that a NDI notification concerns the ingredient. ABC also expressed its concerns that FDA s language in the 2016 draft guidance suggests that almost any change in the manufacturing process or solvent used to make an extract might require an NDI notification due to possible chemical alteration of the ingredient. ABC provided examples where such chemical alteration may justifiably warrant a NDI notification and where it can be relatively insignificant and should not require a notification. ABC wishes to see rational regulations and guidance from the government that protects consumers from inauthentic and or unsafe products and also allows members of industry to be able to produce supplements that meet or exceed required federal regulations for quality and safety said ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal. However some provisions proposed by FDA go well beyond what Congress intended when it conceived of NDIs and what the law actually requires and ABC is concerned that FDA s proposed guidance will not result in any meaningful consumer benefit. NPA expressed concerns the guidance could lead to unintended consequences and undermine the FDA s ability to promote public health. The way it stands now the guidance could actually result in more bad actors skirting the law entirely which is the opposite of what a sensible regulatory regime should be said Dan Fabricant PhD CEO and executive director of NPA. This economic burden to industry in following the food additive-level toxicology tests proposed in this draft guidance could harm small businesses and create a chilling effect on innovation and lead to fewer submissions from legitimate firms while encouraging fly-by-night companies to operate through NDI piggybacking until they are caught. It becomes FDA whack-a-mole all over again. NPA s 98-page comment brief underscores the need for significant changes to the current guidance in the best interest of public health. It is critical for us to be proactive immediately in the new year rather than reactive. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill s attempts to influence the government s top food and drug safety officials on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration s A (FDA) New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) draft guidance is the most recent example of how important it is for our members to remain vigilante and active. Our first concern is always consumer safety and we cannot afford to sit idly by and allow policymakers to purse misguided policies that undermine it added Fabricant. The way it stands now the guidance could actually result in more bad actors skirting the law entirely harm small businesses and create chilling effect on innovation. This is the opposite of what a sensible regulatory regime should be. Natural Products Day is the industry s premier advocacy event in which NPA members and industry stakeholders are connected with their senators and representatives to discuss the importance of issues affecting natural products and the consumers who rely on them each day. This event is free for attendees and NPA arranges all the meetings with key legislators ahead of time while providing direction on how to make an impact on Capitol Hill. The Natural Products Association Political Action Committee (NPA PAC) will also host an evening reception for attendees the night before the conference to help support NPA s advocacy efforts and grow the industry s influence with key legislators. NPA PAC gives members a unified voice to effectively take part in congressional affairs and support candidates and the industry s Capitol Hill allies. Joining NPA PAC is the best possible way to show how powerful and politically aware the industry can be. For more information visit www.npainfo.org. CRN Applauds FDA s Transparency he Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) embraces the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decision to make public data from FDA s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition s (CFSAN) Adverse Event Reporting System (CAERS) calling it a demonstration of the agency s commitment to transparency. CRN noted however that publishing these reports online increases the potential for public misinterpretation of adverse event reports and stresses the importance of FDA providing context for its data. We re encouraged by FDA s move to make this information public as consumers expect and deserve transparency said Duffy MacKay ND senior vice president scientific and regulatory affairs CRN. When the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Act was introduced our industry was a strong proponent of its passing and emphasized the benefits it would provide consumers. Since the law s passage in 2006 the industry s track record demonstrates a strong safety profile for our industry both in comparison to other FDA-regulated industries and considering that more than 170 million Americans take dietary supplements each year. This law gave the FDA a valuable tool to identify T potential safety concerns through patterns and signals. It s essential to understand however that an AER does not demonstrate a causal relationship. In its announcement FDA noted that adverse events about a particular product and the total number of adverse event reports for a product in the CAERS database only reflect the information reported and do not represent any conclusion by FDA about whether the product actually caused the adverse event(s). We advise the public to be cautious when reviewing these reports and to consider the fuller picture MacKay continued. If consumers are looking to make decisions about safe or unsafe products they would do best to pay attention to FDA s consumer advisories rather than looking at individual adverse event reports which at the end of the day may not be related to the supplement product. CRN reminds the dietary supplement industry that under the law supplement companies are required to report serious adverse events to FDA no later than fifteen business days after the company receives the report. CRN urges the industry to follow the law. Niacin or vitamin B3 is found in a variety of foods including nuts and meat. The team from the MRC Toxicology Unit at the University of Leicester studied fruit flies with a mutation that mimics the human disease. The results of the study which is funded by the Medical Research Council reveal a mechanism for how early-onset Parkinson s affects the brain and point to other drugs that may also help this subset of patients. Parkinson s disease occurs when dopaminergic neurons in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra are lost. This can happen for a variety of reasons but in some hereditary cases the main problem is unhealthy mitochondria--the organelles that power the cell said Dr. Miguel Martins who led the study. Mutations in genes such as PINK1 prevent cells from clearing out the defective powerhouses. When they accumulate neurons can t get enough energy and die. The faulty mitochondria also release toxic molecules that damage their genes encoded by DNA. Curiously enough there s a compound in the body that s important for both energy generation and DNA repair. It s called NAD. With all the mitochondrial damage going on we wondered if in cases of Parkinson s the molecule ends up in short supply. To investigate this the team fed fruit flies with the mutated PINK1 gene food supplemented with niacin which is made into NAD inside the body. With this extra source of NAD the flies had far fewer faulty mitochondria than their mutant peers on a regular diet. The vitamin also prevented the flies from losing neurons. The team of neuroscientists then examined whether stopping DNA repair from depleting NAD would protect the flies with Parkinson s--and found that genetically switching this function off kept mitochondria healthy and neurons alive as well as improved the flies strength mobility and lifespan. The results suggest that in familial Parkinson s available NAD is critical for keeping mitochondria in shape and the disease at bay. Drugs that block NADconsuming DNA repair already exist to treat cancer. Loading up on niacin probably can t hurt either said Martins. While neither of these would be cures they would expand treatment options for Parkinson s patients with faulty mitochondria. This study strengthens the therapeutic potential for vitamin B3 niacin-based dietary interventions and PARP inhibition in the treatment of Parkinson s disease. Vitamin D Deficiency Increases Risk of Chronic Headache itamin D deficiency may increase the risk of chronic headache according to a new study from the University of Eastern Finland. The findings were published in Scientific Reports. The Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study KIHD analyzed the serum vitamin D levels and occurrence of headache in approximately 2 600 men aged between 42 and 60 years in 1984-1989. In 68 percent of these men the serum vitamin D level was below 50 nmol l which is generally considered the threshold for vitamin D deficiency. Chronic headache occurring at least on a weekly basis was reported by 250 men and men reporting chronic headache had lower serum vitamin D levels than others. When the study population was divided into four groups based on their serum vitamin D levels the group with the lowest levels had over a twofold risk of chronic headache in V comparison to the group with the highest levels. Chronic headache was also more frequently reported by men who were examined outside the summer months of June through September. Thanks to UVB radiation from the sun the average serum vitamin D levels are higher during the summer months. The study adds to the accumulating body of evidence linking a low intake of vitamin D to an increased risk of chronic diseases. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with the risk of headache also by some earlier mainly considerably smaller studies. In Finland and in other countries far from the Equator UVB radiation from the sun is a sufficient source of vitamin D during the summer months but outside the summer season people need to make sure that they get sufficient vitamin D from food or from vitamin D supplements. No scientific evidence relating to the benefits and possible adverse effects of long-term use in higher doses yet exists. The Finnish Vitamin D Trial FIND currently ongoing at the University of Eastern Finland will shed light on the question as the five-year trial analyses the effects of high daily doses of vitamin D on the risk factors and development of diseases. The trial participants are taking a vitamin D supplement of 40 or 80 micrograms per day. The trial also investigates the effects of vitamin D supplementation on various pain conditions. By Lisa Schofield ecember 2016 s surprising losses of entertainment icons George Michael and Carrie Fisher to devastating heart conditions has disheartened millions of fans--many of whom in their 40s and early 50s and who have never had their cardiovascular status tested--may be wondering if somehow they may be at risk too. At Green s Nutrition in Stockton CA owner Eunice Green NHD related Although no one has come outright and said they have a greater concern about their heart problems because of the celebrity deaths I do think that the awareness is increased when it happens to people of renown. When it comes to heart health customers key concerns are high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The following are several of the most recent available statistics from the American Heart Association s 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update From 2003 to 2013 the death rate from heart disease has fallen about 38 percent--but the burden and risk factors remain alarmingly high. Heart disease strikes someone in the D U.S. about once every 42 seconds. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States killing more than 370 000 people a year. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined. About 750 000 people in the U.S. have heart attacks each year. Of those about 116 000 die. Approximately 550 000 people in the U.S. have a first-time heart attack each year and about 200 000 have recurrent heart attacks. With all the conditions you can help customers support with supplements heart health should be prominent as unlike several other systems is multi-factorial and one customer s primary heart condition (high blood pressure) may be different from the next s (circulation). And still others have more than one or have cardiometabolic issues (metabolic syndrome). Equally a customer who is inactive and overweight and who wants to get into healthier shape will need cardiovascular support supplementation. Ross Pelton RPh PhD CCN scientific director Texas-based Essential Formulas Inc. emphasized that heart disease is still the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Key heart-healthy nutritional supplements are effective at helping reduce risks to cardiovascular disease he said underscoring the need for prominence of this condition-specific category all year around. In fact pointed out Jay Levy director of sales California-based Wakunaga of America Co. Ltd. One in every four Americans has been diagnosed with some form of cardiovascular disease. Because of its prevalence--and because it encompasses so many conditions including high cholesterol hypertension atherosclerosis heart failure and more-- cardiovascular disease has justifiably become a major health category among dietary supplements. What s more many of the pharmaceuticals that target the various risk factors for cardiovascular disease come with a long list of side effects that make them less-than-desirable for patients. This has led many consumers to seek out natural yet effective alternatives. Dan Chapman founder and CEO Redd Remedies Illinois noted that many 24 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2014 cardiovascular-health shelves are loaded with single ingredients such as CoQ10 and fish oil but the heart is much more complex than that. Chapman said that providing condition-specific formulas that address the variety of issues such as healthy blood pressure cholesterol profiles and circulation would be highly attractive for customers. Overall according to Marci Clow MS RDN at Rainbow Light your cardiovascular section should include supplements containing what she believes are the best-researched singular ingredients compounds that promote cardiovascular wellness. These include Omega-3 EFAs Fish oil has been shown to lower triglycerides to prevent clot formation and plaque buildup and also improve blood pressure and increase HDL. Psyllium Psyllium is a sound source of soluble fiber and is prominent in many bulk laxatives. Psyllium studies have shown modest reductions in blood levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Coenzyme Q10 CoQ10 facilitates energy production and is a powerful antioxidant. Oxidation of circulating LDL is thought to play a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis which is the underlying disorder leading to heart attack and ischemic strokes Clow noted. Certain cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) are known to inhibit the body s natural production of CoQ10 which is why supplementation is often recommended for statin users. Phytosterols Many studies have demonstrated that consuming dietary plant sterols decreases total cholesterol and LDL. As phytosterols travel through the GI tract they prevent cholesterol from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Niacin B-complex Niacin raises HDL and lowers triglycerides. The B-vitamins folic acid B6 and B12 are all involved in lowering blood levels of homocysteine an amino acid that s been linked to heart disease. Green said she often suggests Michael s Cholesterol Factors and Blood Pressure Factors. Another product I suggest a lot is Ignite she added. This is a powder that you mix in water it has Larginine and L-citrulline which create nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is wonderful for any heart concerns as it is a vasodilator and it also keeps the endothelium soft and supple. It also gives a subtle energy without stimulants and helps with endurance. Medical research continues to provide illumination into previously obscure areas of heart health [See Extra Extra at www.vitaminretailer.com.] And research evidence and conclusions often stimulate new trends in how the health care community works with the patient population as well as in product formulation. New research indicates that simply lowering total cholesterol has little if any impact on heart health and longevity. Improving lipid ratios lowering LDL and increasing HDL along with managing triglycerides blood sugar and inflammation provide a more sound and balanced strategy for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. -- Rob Maru Vice President Innovation & Brand Development Reserveage Nutrition Levy elaborated that the heart health category has grown extensively over the past five years as science has uncovered new nutrients or nutrient combinations with cardiovascular benefits targeting specific issues. As an example he pointed to one study (published in the International Journal Cardiology) that focused on the importance of reducing calcium aggregation (coronary artery calcification or CAC) inside arteries including the aorta causing them to narrow and stiffen. This study shows that a combination of aged garlic extract (AGE) vitamin B12 folic acid vitamin B6 and arginine can favorably alter the ratio of brown to white adipose (fat) tissue surrounding the heart muscle. This unique combination of nutrients also helps thwart atherosclerosis by reducing homocysteine levels and slowing the progression of CAC he added. According to Rob Maru vice president of innovation and brand development for Florida-based Reserveage Nutrition the trend toward a more comprehensive approach to cardiovascular wellness will positively impact the category. New research indicates that simply lowering total cholesterol has little if any impact on heart health and longevity he stated. Improving lipid ratios lowering LDL and increasing HDL along with managing triglycerides blood sugar and inflammation provide a more sound and balanced strategy for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Levy agreed noting that recent studies have found that cholesterol profile isn t as much of a risk factor as previously thought. Some researchers have shown that LDL levels in and of themselves were less impactful than the LDL particle size and whether or not the LDL was oxidized. Additionally another risk factor-- Lipoprotein(a) [ Lp(a) ] a small dense highly inflammatory sub-fraction of a cholesterol particle--emerged as critical in the development of atherosclerosis. Lp(a) is manufactured in the liver as the body s way of patching up tiny fissures that develop in the lining of arterial walls. The patching process entails the production of both cholesterol and Lp(a) the latter is many times more potent than cholesterol in its patching ability as it tends to quickly attract more Lp(a) particles. Aggregation of Lp(a) particles forms plaque thus narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow thereby increasing the risk of a future heart attack. Preliminary studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids and nattokinase can help reduce Lp(a) levels he said. As 2017 gets into high gear Maru said that continued research that focuses on contributing factors beyond cholesterol management will help to evolve the category and expand the selection of heart health ingredients and thus finished products. Cardio Care Considerations Beyond the generic supplements mentioned above for your shelves manufacturers provide an array of products tailored for a wide range of consumers heart concerns. Everyone s Omega Fish and Flax from Rainbow Light is as its name describes universally suitable for overall healthy cardiovascular function. It uniquely combines benefits from both fish and organic flax oil Clow said. One soft gel daily delivers the American Heart Association s dietary recommendation for omega from fish plus 200 IU vitamin D. Redd Remedies has a trio of distinctive offerings in this arena. Heart Strong said Chapman is a foundational cardiovascular supplement. It offers nutritional and herbal support for the entire cardiovascular system--both the cardiac muscle itself (the heart) and the circulatory system. Specifically it contains magnesium the adaptogen white panax ginseng acetyl L-carnitine and CoQ10 to promote energy creation within the heart muscle. and VITAMIN RETAILER 25 FEBRUARY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM hawthorn and arjuna extracts to support heart muscle function and healthy blood flow. Cholesterol D-fense supports healthy metabolism of cholesterol via liver and kidney support as well as antioxidant protection for the blood vessels. Chapman explained Adaptogenic mushrooms reishi and cordyceps send messages to balance the endocrine system providing precursors to vitamin D supporting healthy cholesterol metabolism along with a healthy stress and inflammatory response that protects CoQ10 levels. Whole food red yeast rice provides nourishing whole body support and green tea extract protects the arterial lining against free radical damage. Cholesterol D-fense is designed to maintain cholesterol to your unique level rather than just driving levels lower which may cause the body to work harder simply to produce more. For customers whose main concern is healthy vascular conditioning Redd Remedies Circulation VA supports blood vessel health promoting vascular strength tone circulation and healthy platelet aggregation according to Chapman. Circulation VA features MenaQ7 the only clinically supported natural vitamin K2 shown to promote arterial flexibility and cardiovascular health he pointed out. The blend also contains grape vine leaf extract organic grape juice powder and blueberry fruit powder to provide antioxidant protection ginger root to support blood flow and promote healthy inflammatory pathways and horse chestnut to promote healthy vascular strength and tone particularly in the veins. Another antioxidant-support supplement is Essential Formulas Inc. s Reg Activ CardioWellness which contains Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 a probiotic that produces glutathione. Boosting glutathione increases detoxification and antioxidant protection Pelton described. ME-3 also reduces inflammation in a human clinical trial individuals taking ME-3 exhibited a 16 percent reduction in oxidized LDL-cholesterol. And noted Pelton Dr. Ohhira s Probiotics are formulated to create and 26 VITAMIN RETAILER maintain a healthy microbiome which will positively impact overall cardiovascular status. Here s how explained Pelton researchers have shown that dysbiosis causes inflammation which increases leaky gut or intestinal permeability. When intestinal linings are permeable this results in increased levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides which increases systemic inflammation thus increasing cardiovascular disease risks. Therefore maintaining a healthy microbiome with Dr. Ohhira s Probiotics helps reduce intestinal inflammation and cardiovascular disease risks he stated. Reserveage provides several more simplistic supplements for consumers who prefer this approach versus more complex formulations. Its Bergamot Cholesterol Support features Bergamonte bergamot. Studies on this patented ingredient have shown it to encourage healthy cholesterol profiles by increasing HDL and decreasing total cholesterol LDL and triglycerides. The studies also showed it to support healthy inflammatory response and balance blood sugar. The brand also offers Resveratrol for consumers who want to healthy inflammation support manage insulin and blood sugar boost circulation and protect the endothelial lining and Ubiquinol which Maru described as the advanced form of CoQ10 has the ability to reduce side effects associated with statin use such as fatigue and muscle cramps. Also its likely physicians are telling those customers that statins can lower CoQ10. Aged garlic extract (AGE) anchors numerous cardiovascular-support supplements under the venerable Kyolic brand from Wakunaga of America. Levy noted the ingredients in the supplements were chosen based on published studies many of which are double-blind placebocontrolled and randomized. The Kyolic line includes Formula 100 Cardiovascular Formula 104 Cholesterol Formula 106 Circulation Formula 107 Phytosterols Cholesterol Support Formula 108 Total Heart Health Formula 109 Blood Pressure Health Formula 110 CoQ10 Red Yeast Rice plus CoQ10 Omega-3 and ModuChol Daily Heart Support. Newer for the cardio-care department are two entries from New York-based N D--Vitamin D3 to help support healthy blood pressure and Omega-3 EFAs to help maintain healthy heart function. Naomi Ostrove COO commented Both of these products come in our patented stackable bottles and have the human body on it highlighting the areas it helps. This makes it easier for consumers to pick out the right products for them. Ostrove and the team at N D will assuredly grab your customers attention to the heart health aisle due to riveting packaging but there s more to ensure you ring up cardio-care supplement sales. Green said she writes educational articles for local media and she also provides discounts on heart-health products. Further she posts heart-health tips on the store s Facebook page and e-blasts as well. For in-store educational endeavors Wakunaga of America provides retailers with third-party articles and educational booklets. We also participate in sampling programs and health fairs across the country Levy noted. Because heart health is multifactorial with proper diet physical activity lifestyle habits hydration and stress are key factors that must be considered Clow said that store tours or educational seminars that incorporate these fact-ors are a creative way to educate consumers. Education not only fosters credibility for the retailer but the more reliable information consumers have the more likely they are to purchase products that may support heart health. Clow added that consumers are more likely to attend an event featuring credentialed speakers and desirable giveaways. She presented several ideas wherein a sponsored gift basket of supplements for heart health can be given A grocery store tour led by a dietitian in which consumers are given heart healthy dietary options throughout the store ending with how to navigate the (Continued on page 42) WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2017 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalfactors for info about this advertiser Natural Answers for Adrenal & Thyroid Health By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta drenal and thyroid glands are responsible for producing hormones that keep the body running optimally. Common symptoms of adrenal and thyroid disorders include fatigue weight gain depression sensitivity to cold muscle or joint aches poor memory thinning hair and chronic yeast infections. Adrenals are organs that control the body s hormones and help it endure the most stressful situations. When your adrenals are always under strain it sets off an autoimmune inflammatory response in your body where all your organs and immunity are impacted negatively as a result of constant assault of cortisol. This can cause a person s thyroid issue to be worse off than usual. A Natural Recommendations Retailer Tony Joffe owner of Health Best in Union NJ said that glandulars are the first recommendation for adrenal health. But If someone is a vegetarian we d switch to a homeopathic he said. Tom Donnelly retailer and owner of 28 VITAMIN RETAILER Autumn Harvest Scotch Plains NJ said the three most important nutrients for the thyroid are iodine selenium and tyrosine with secondary nutrients magnesium zinc B-complex and vitamin C. He also recommends herbs ashwagandha hops and forskolin. There s also iodine in capsule form seaweed extracts and dulse for people who don t want to take capsules he said adding that he has been noticing more thyroid formulas on the market. If you take good care of your thyroid your adrenals are going to benefit. Michael Schwartz president of Michael s Naturopathic Programs San Antonio TX agreed that there is a great need for adrenal and thyroid health products. I think almost everyone is dealing with an issue related to either or both glands at the same time. As a company Michael s Naturopathic Programs doesn t follow trends as they are momentary said Schwartz. The issue in healing and health is ensuring that the basic nutritional needs are met in meaningful amounts. This will provide the nutrients to facilitate all of the processes the body systems go through. The company s product Thyrodrenal is designed to provide meaningful amounts of necessary nutrients to ensure that both glands are fed a supportive nutritional blend. Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at EuroPharma Inc. in Wisconsin agreed that the state of the market for these products is very strong. She said More than ever we re seeing people who are looking for ways to recharge their adrenal and thyroid glands to have better energy more efficient metabolism and more physical and emotional stamina. If people have noticed a slowdown in their ability to burn calories or a challenge just trying to stay alert or a lack of being able to react well to stressful events it s very likely that either thyroid or adrenal health is an issue. Regarding iodine for the thyroid Myers said We ve known that iodine is critical for a long time. After all it s one of the reasons we started adding iodine to salt. However somewhere along the Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2014 way the knowledge of iodine was lost. As synthetic drugs became more popular the basic understanding of iodine s relationship with the thyroid was forgotten to the point that you have many iodine competitors in the environment--chlorine bromides fluoride-- that move into iodine receptors in the thyroid throughout the body. Continuing she said To make matters worse even the small amount that people would get in table salt has diminished as many have moved toward low-sodium diets. And you have a situation where people are feeling the very real effects of thyroid slowdown even if they don t officially have hypothyroidism according to standard practice. However we see subclinical levels of hypothyroidism rampant fatigue depression overweight and obesity and susceptibility to illness like never before. Additionally stressful schedules and non-optimal dietary choices set us up to feel easily drained. Energy and Vitalty Support According to Myers EuroPharma Inc. s formulas Thyroid-Care Tri-Iodine Adrenaplex and Adaptra have been well received because they help restore the nutrients that people have been missing or have depleted through years of stress exposure to iodine competitors dietary choices aging temperament or any combination of the three she said. People love them because they work. If they once felt drained or stressed they now feel energetic focused have greater endurance and recover faster from physical and mental challenges. One of most overlooked elements in daily energy is the nutritional status of the thyroid Myers added. A drop in thyroid activity can make anyone feel weak and tired. The thyroid gland dictates the speed with which the body converts fuel calories into energy. The problem is that most standard thyroid tests still read at normal levels despite suboptimal functioning and these issues are then not fully addressed. Some integrative practitioners estimate one in two women and one in three men over the age of 40 have less than ideal thyroid function. Myers stressed that the most critical element for optimal thyroid function is the essential mineral iodine. Yet stud- ies have found that dietary iodine has decreased almost 50 percent in the last 30 years while exposure to iodine s competitors from the halide family-- chlorine astatine fluoride bromine and bromides--is increasing. It is not surprising that the need for supplemental iodine is also increasing she said. Thyroid Care is one of EuroPharma Inc. s most popular products because it says right on the package what it s for and it provides three forms of iodine-- molecular iodine sodium iodide and potassium iodide--plus the amino acid L-tyrosine which is required for the formation of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. EuroPharma s goal with thyroid-supporting products is to help people feel healthy and vital again. Myers said Once a person s thyroid is working properly they re going to have more energy and less fatigue. After all fatigue is stressful. Not being able to think clearly and go about your day with enthusiasm is tough. Plus the thyroid is the metabolic gas pedal of the body. So when it gets the iodine and L-tyrosine it needs keeping a healthy weight is going to be much easier. Although Tri-Iodine is an iodine-only product it also provides three different forms of iodine--molecular iodine sodium iodide and potassium iodide--at different strength levels. While it s an excellent choice for thyroid and metabolic support it also supports prostrate and breast health immune function and helps detoxify bromide fluoride and chloride as well. It is available in 3- 6.25- 12.5- and 25 mg capsules and in new chocolate chewable tablets as a 500 mcg dosage level. EuroPharma Inc. s Adrenalplex provides hormonal nutrient and botanical support that helps people energize feel renewed and resist stress. It contains adrenal extract DHEA Ltyrosine pregnenalone vitamin B6 as pyridoxal-5phosphate pantothenic acid licorice rehmenniaroot and vitamin C. Each ingredient covers overlapping concerns. For example pregnenalone is a building block for adrenal hormones L-tyrosine and licorice help resist the effects of stress adrenal extract re-build energetic responses day to day and helps feel less worn out. Myers said I think Adrenaplex is a perfect choice for peo- ple who have been feeling exhausted and burned-out and who need to energize again without feeling revved up but with a sense of the energy that they may have been missing for quite some time. Adaptra is an all-herbal blend that helps anyone with energy issues including those with adrenal dysfunction. It provides clinically studied levels of rhodiola and ashwagandha--two botanicals that have generations of traditional use and decades of cutting edge research behind them. Supplements Playing a Role in Overall Health While Rainbow Light in California currently doesn t have any products targeted specifically for adrenal or thyroid health their new food-based Vibrance products are targeted for supporting energy vitality and stress management. The adrenal glands produce numerous hormones responsible for multiple functions in the body like regulating metabolism immune system blood pressure and other essential functions but they are probably most well-known for secretion of hormones responsible for how we respond to stress said Marci Clow MS RDN at Rainbow Light. Adrenal dysfunction is not recognized by mainstream medicine as a condition but if the adrenals are overstimulated for long periods of time they can weaken and result in adrenal fatigue causing feelings of constant tiredness mild depression and general malaise. Several Rainbow Light multivitamin options contain key nutrients that may be supportive to thyroid health. Some of the key nutrients for stress and energy support in Rainbow Light products include B-complex Pantothenic acid (B5) Pyridoxine (B6) vitamin B-12 vitamin C and magnesium. Clow said As a precaution it is always advisable to consult with a health care professional regarding possible interactions to assure safety prior to taking any supplement especially when taking medication or being treated for an illness. Clow noted the importance of healthy digestion and its importance to adrenal health. Good digestion is the foundation of life and if our GI (gastrointestinal) tracts are functioning optimally our bodies can process food into energy more efficiently our immune system will function better and adrenal weakening may be less impacted said Clow. Rainbow Light products include VITAMIN RETAILER 29 FEBRUARY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Natural Answers for & Thyroid Adrenal Health digestive components ranging from plant source enzymes and probiotics to botanicals for easing digestion. In addition adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha Siberian ginseng and Rhodiola rosea are commonly recommended and traditionally used for adrenal support. Adrenal and Thyroid Products--Separate in Consumers Perception While they are interrelated via complex internal networks of communication and response the adrenal and thyroid product categories tend to be separate in consumers perception according to Neil E. Levin CCN DANLA senior nutrition education manager with Illinois-based NOW Foods. Adrenal formulas narrowly focus on promoting optimal levels of stress markers and supporting our ability to be strong resilient and resistant to physical and seasonal challenges Levin said. Thyroid formulas focus on supporting normal body temperature metabolic rate and body composition with related benefits for supporting weight management and energy levels. Yet the hypothalamus-pituitary connection controls adrenal function thyroid function and gonadal function via three separate but interrelated functional pathways that include feedback loops to monitor and modulate these glands in a grand multi-faceted coordination scheme. He added that because of the current focus on optimizing the stress response controlling body composition and weight management and maintaining strong energy levels the market for natural adrenal and thyroid formulas is very strong. Agreeing with other marketers Levin said that iodine is an essential nutrient for thyroid function. The frequent lack of iodine in the modern diet due to a reduced intake of dietary iodine from seafood and iodized salt is implicated 30 VITAMIN RETAILER in a resurgence of goiters in the American population and a reduced ability to maintain healthy metabolic rates to control weight and provide energy he said. Stress produces an adrenal response with the stress of everyday life becoming a factor in appetite control accumulation of abdominal fat temporary spikes in blood pressure and other normal responses he said. The adrenal glands help the body respond and adjust to physical mental and emotional stressors through the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisolrelated stress responses can also increase appetite stress-related nervous over-eating and accumulation of abdominal fat. When stress becomes a part of everyday life cortisol and blood sugar and consequently appetite and body weight may become difficult to manage. A healthy stress response can be supported by a number of nutritional factors including certain vitamins and botanicals. Knowledge of these potential issues is spreading according to Levin first among the medical and public health communities and now to the general public concerned about stress energy and metabolism issues. Trending Ashley Koff RD and spokesperson for Natural Vitality in Texas noted trends in the following ingredients for adrenal and thyroid health vitamin D3 magnesium probiotics iodine ashwagandha and rhodiola. In addition among the most popular adrenal stress support ingredients is the botanical blend Relora according to Levin. Relora a combination of Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense has been shown to help control appetite and stress-related eating thereby helping to manage body weight. Other herbal products known collectively as adaptogens are also valued for their ability to help the body adapt to stressful conditions Levin said. These botanicals include ashwagandha root holy basil leaf reishi mushroom rhodiola root eleuthero root and various ginsengs especially Panax quinquefolius and Panax ginseng. While glandular extracts have a long history of use but are not vegetarian friendly Levin said he feels that many consumers do not want to take them. Additionally he said many people prefer to first try the basics--vitamins and minerals with some well-known botanicals added--over what seems to be more exotic glandular substances. Because of our understanding of what consumers prefer NOW offers only gentle glandular-free formulas that support healthy adrenal response and thyroid function. NOW Thyroid Energy is a nutritional supplement for the support of a healthy thyroid gland. These nutraceuticals all have varying degrees of research for treating arthritis-related joint pain and represent the mainstay of joint health supplements. While this is all well and good the fact is that there has not been much innovation in the world of evidence-based joint health nutraceuticals over the past five to 10 years. That s why I was so interested to learn about an ayurvedic herb called Terminalia chebula. W Background Before jumping into a discussion about T. chebula let s quickly review joint discomfort which may result from various medical disorders or simply as a result of exercise. 32 VITAMIN RETAILER Osteoarthritis (OA) and low back pain (LBP) are two of the most prevalent disorders associated with joint discomfort. OA is the most common form of arthritis affecting 13.9 percent of adults aged 25 years and older and 33.6 percent (12.4 million) of those 65 and older (believed to be conservative estimate).1 Research indicates that more than 80 percent of the population will experience LBP at some time during life 2 and 69 percent of those suffering from LBP felt that it affected their daily lives.3 In addition some people are subject to exerciserelated joint pain especially knee pain. This is true of competitive swimmers 4 workers whose jobs involve significant outdoor activity 5 and overweight and obese individuals.6 Non-prescription conventional treatment options for joint discomfort include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and topically applied menthol or capsaicin-based creams and gels 7 although NSAIDs are associated with potentially serious adverse effects including dyspepsia ulcers bleeding 8 9 and increased risk of GI (gastrointestinal) complications.10 Complementary and alternative options include those nutraceuticals mentioned in the opening paragraph of this article including T. chebula. History & Constituents of Terminalia chebula The fruit of the Terminalia chebula tree has been extensively used in ayurvedic Unani and Iranian medicine as a traditional remedy against various human ailments.11 12 Called the King of Medicine in Tibet T. chebula is one of the herbs at the top of the list in Materia Medica of ayurveda due to its extraordinary healing power. Demonstrated pharmacological activities for T. chebula include antioxidant antimicrobial anti-diabetic hepatoprotective anti-inflammatory antimutagenic anti-aproliferative radio protective cardio protective antiarthritic anti-caries gastrointestinal motility and wound healing.13 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2017 The phytochemical constituents of T. chebula fruit include tannins steroids sapogenins saponins anthraquinone derivatives and flavonoids.14 The tannins are most prevalent at 32-45 percent.15 One specific T. chebula fruit extract AyuFlex (Natreon Inc. New Jersey) which has been the subject of much research has a phytochemical profile that includes 39 percent low molecular weight hydrolysable tannins with 29 percent chebulinic acid chebulagic acid. Now let s review some of that research. Terminalia chebula Research on Pain and Joint Discomfort First 12-week Study A 12-week double-blind placebo controlled trial16 was conducted with 100 patients who had knee joint discomfort to evaluate the analgesic effect of T. chebula fruit (TCE as AyuFlex) a proprietary chromium complex (Crominex Natreon Inc.) their combination and a placebo. The patients received one of five treatments 500 mg TCE twice daily (1 000 mg total) 500 mg TCE twice daily (1 000 mg total) 400 mcg of chromium (as Crominex3 ) 400 mcg of chromium (as Crominex3 ) Placebo 250 mg TCE twice daily (500 mg total) Severity of knee joint pain and discomfort was assessed using 1) a modified version of the scientificallyvalidated questionnaire known as WOMAC which evaluates pain stiffness and physical joint functioning in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip 2) the knee swelling index (KSI) which measures the degree of knee swelling and 3) the visual analog scale (VAS) a validated questionIntervention mWOMAC score KSI score 7 percent naire used to subjectively assessment of pain stiffness and disability. The results showed the following percentage reductions in pain-related scores after 12 weeks (view table below). The results were similar with the different assessment methods. Essentially TCE 1 000 mg day performed the best with regard to pain stiffness and disability. After that TCE 1 000 mg chromium 400 performed next best closely followed by TCE 500 mg day. In this case there was no advantage in using TCE with chromium. Furthermore there were also significant improvements in pain stiffness and disability at four weeks with TCE 1 000 mg day. Second 12-week Study A second randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 105 healthy (90 subjects completed the study) overweight men and women who had no knee joint discomfort at rest but experienced knee joint discomfort with exercise. The subjects received 250 mg of TCE (as AyuFlex) twice daily 500 mg TCE twice daily or a placebo. As with the previous 12-week study mWOMAC and VAS scores were used to assess results but this time a modified Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (mKOOS) was also included to evaluate short-term and long-term symptoms and function. Additional tests included a six-minute walk test for distance and Goniometric ROM of pain-free knee flexion extension as well as blood tests for inflammatory markers and safety. The results were impressive. Compared to placebo TCE treatment significantly Improved mWOMAC mKOOS global scores with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.045) improved VAS scores for overall whole-body joint discomfort with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.003) and 500 VAS Pain 35 percent mg twice daily (P 0.02) Improved six-minute walk performance with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.02) Decreased perception of postexercise knee joint soreness with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.002) Improved perception of overall whole-body joint function with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.03) and 500 mg twice daily (P 0.04) Improved perception of low back health with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.038) Improved willingness to exercise with 250 mg twice daily (P 0.047) and 500 mg twice daily (P 0.047) Unlike the first 12-week study this one showed no significant difference between the 500 and 1 000 mg day doses which validates the lower dose. Another surprise was the reduction in back pain. Single-dose Study Another double-blind placebo-controlled study17 evaluated the analgesic (pain-relieving) activity and safety of 1 000 mg of TCE (as AyuFlex) or placebo as a single oral dose in 12 healthy human volunteers in whom pain was induced using a mechanical hot-air pain model. Results were that TCE significantly improved pain threshold and pain compared to placebo (P 0.001) and no adverse reactions were reported. Related Research Oxidative stress18 19 (i.e. from free radicals) and inflammation20 21 contribute towards OA and LBP. Consequently research on TCE s effect on markers for oxidative stress and inflammation helps to understand its benefits for these conditions. Randomized double-blind studies22 23 have shown that TCE (as AyuFlex) reduces markers of oxidative stress (MDA) by as much as 13.4 percent and markers of inflammation (hsCRP) by as much as 21 percent. Research on Dogs In addition to human research there has also been a study24 on the effects of TCE (as AyuFlex) in moderately OA dogs. The dogs received either a placebo or 500 mg twice daily of AyuFlex for 150 days. Physical exams arthritic pain evaluation joint flexibility blood tests and x-rays were used to assess effectiveness. Non-prescription conventional treatment options such as NSAIDs are associated with potentially serious adverse effects. Nutraceutical treatment options for joint health have varying degrees of research to support their efficacy but there has not been much innovation over the past five to 10 years. The herb Terminalia chebula has an extensive history of use in ayurveda and other cultures of traditional medicine and the specific TCE known as AyuFlex has been the subject of human clinical research demonstrating efficacy in reducing joint pain stiffness and disability--this includes pain-relieving benefits for healthy people without OA. Research on OA dogs has shown similar pain-relieving benefits. In short AyuFlex offers an innovative evidence-based option for relieving joint pain discomfort with 500-1 000 mg day. VR For a full list of references visit www.vitaminretailer.com. showed that dogs given TCE showed significant (P 0.01) reductions in overall pain pain upon limb manipulation and pain after physical exertion by 6090 days. Maximum effects were achieved by day 150. In addition blood tests indicated that TCE had an anti-inflammatory effect and X-rays showed a marked decrease in cartilage damage osteophyte formation (bony outgrowths associated with degeneration of joint cartilage). By contrast there we no significant changes in dogs treated with placebo. Finally TCE was well tolerated and without side effects. In fact cinnamon has been valued for its culinary powers since ancient times as well as for its medicinal and natural preservative benefits. First described by Shen Nung the father of Chinese medicine circa 2800 B.C. ancient Egyptians used cinnamon as part of the mummification process. In the first century CE Europeans treasured the spice so much that they paid 15 times more for it than silver according to Mercola.com. Cinnamon is actually the brown bark of the cinnamon tree. It can be found in quill form (the dried stick variety) or ground as a fine powder. Rich in essential oil cinnamon contains active components including cinnamaldehyde cinnamyl acetate and cinnamyl alcohol which account for some of its many therapeutic benefits. There are hundreds of types of cinnamon. But only four types or varieties of cinnamon are used for commercial purposes according to www.cinnamonvogue.com. These are ceylon cinnamon cassia cinnamon Saigon cinnamon and Korintje cinnamon. All cassia type cinnamon are hard and have high levels of coumarin a substance which may cause liver damage while ceylon cinnamon is the only soft and brittle cinnamon with low coumarin levels. In the past most of Europe used ceylon cinnamon primarily because this was the first spice European explorers brought back from their conquests of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) nearly 400 years ago. But cheaper cassia has made inroads and has come to dominate the market. For those taking cinnamon for health reasons ceylon cinnamon is recommended. 1. I love cross training and have been the ultimate cross trainer for more than three decades. My routine includes resistance training swimming cycling and running. The essential fundamentals of cross training are the same whether you are exercising for improved health and fitness or training to compete in an event. Cross training has numerous benefits including Conditioning By performing a variety of exercises from different disciplines you are asking more of your body than with a traditional approach. Asking your body to do more will lead to increased fitness levels. When you cross train you will see muscle gains fat loss increased cardio-aerobic capacity and increased fast twitch. This comprehensive style of fitness training is the ultimate form C of conditioning. In fact studies indicate for example that resistance training can help prevent injury control body weight and improve functional capacity. Weight Management People who want to lose weight and body fat should engage in an exercise program that enables them to safely burn a significant number of calories. According to multiple studies weight loss and fat loss is best accomplished when you exercise for more than 30 minutes at a moderate level of intensity (60 percent to 85 percent of maximum heart rate). This is often best accomplished implementing a cross training regimen. For example exercising on an elliptical trainer for 20 to 30 minutes and then cycling on a stationary bike for an additional 20 to 30 minutes is a great way to reduce fat stores. Active Recovery Active recovery is the practice of using an alternative type of training to recover from a pri- mary training method. For example many football players do swimming workouts and pool resistance exercises to actively recover from their onfield practices and traditional weight room training. In addition to the conditioning and injury preventing benefits this type of cross training will actually speed up recovery by increasing blood flow and the delivery of nutrients to stressed or damaged muscle tissue. Reduced Risk of Injury Typically training injuries occur when there is too much repetition of a single activity. Whether it is running squatting or jumping the body can be easily worn down if these activities are frequently repeated. Joints ligaments muscles and tendons throughout the body are under a tremendous amount of stress through repeated movement. It s important to give them a break. By spreading the cumulative level of orthopedic stress over additional muscles and joints you can exercise 40 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2017 more frequently and for longer durations without excessively overloading vulnerable areas of the body including knees hips back shoulders elbows and feet. For example long distance runners should consider incorporating low-impact activities such as elliptical training cycling and swimming into their routines. Retailer shelves are full of products that can dramatically help those committed to a cross-training routine. Some of my favorites include CoQ10 (Ubiquinol) CoQ10 is one of those encompassing dietary supplements with both general health benefits (e.g. anti-aging antioxidant) as well as specific health applications (e.g. cardiovascular diabetes etc.). It is a fundamental component in energy production immune response and protection against damage by free radicals. CoQ10 is part of the mitochondrial electron transport system and is synthesized in all cells. It is essential to the body s production of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This holds special importance for the heart which is loaded with mitochondria and has the body s highest concentration of CoQ10 because of the significant demands made upon it. Aging reduces access to CoQ10. Although it is obtained from the diet (mainly from fatty fish organ meats and whole grains) as well as synthesized in small amounts both of these routes decline with age. The body s declining capacity to extract and assimilate CoQ10 in later years plays a role in the development of various cardiovascular conditions. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10 and the most highly absorbed. Ubiquinol is directly used in human metabolism as a lipid-soluble antioxidant. While standard CoQ10 (ubiquinone) supplements can be converted into ubiquinol in the body this conversion can be less efficient in some individuals based on age genetics blood sugar status or level of oxidative stress. Fish Oil The mainstream media has been reporting on the benefits of fish oil for years. Studies have shown that the omega-3s found in fish oil helps prevent and fight heart disease cancer depression arthritis Alzheimer s disease ulcers diabetes hyperactivity and other diseases. For cross train- ing the healthy fats found in fish oil increase energy levels and fights inflammation. While omega3s can be found in flaxseed walnuts and a few other foods the most beneficial form of omega-3 containing two fatty acids EPA and DHA which are essential in preventing and fighting both physical and mental illness can be found only in fish. Be sure to take fish oil products from companies that follow strict procedures to eliminate environmental contaminants to assure the highest purity of its fish oil supplements. Retailer shelves are full of products that can dramatically help those committed to a cross-training routine. Glycine Propionyl L-Carnitine (GPLC) Backed by years of scientific research GPLC has been shown to assist the body in a number of ways including Cardiovascular Health Studies show that GPLC is proven to increase nitric oxide retention which is important to the regulation of blood circulation while improving the vasodilatory ability (increased blood flow capability) of blood vessels. Energy GPLC is proven to increase nitric oxide levels in the human blood stream resulting in the optimization of endurance stamina and recovery. GPLC assists the delivery of oxygen and nutrients through vasodilation encourages blood flow and helps the production of ATP energy while diminishing harmful free radical buildup in the body. Recovery Through its antioxidant properties GPLC aids in muscle recovery by not only speeding up post workout recovery but also recovery time during training. This helps increase both endurance and stamina. Whey Protein Whey protein is an excellent protein choice for anyone whose wants to incorporate a cross training routine. Whey protein isolate the purest form available is unsurpassed as a source of the essential amino acids required in the daily diet. Essential amino acids are the building blocks for healthy muscles skin nails and other body tissue. Cross training athletes need more protein in their diet often as much as twice the recommended daily allowance for optimal performance. Whey protein makes a difference for the following reasons Whey protein is a naturally complete protein meaning that it contains all of the essential amino acids required in the daily diet. It has the ideal combination of amino acids to help improve body composition and enhance athletic performance. Whey protein is a rich source of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) containing the highest known levels of any natural food source. BCAAs are important for athletes since unlike the other essential amino acids they are metabolized directly into muscle tissue and are the first ones used during periods of exercise and resistance training. Whey protein provides the body with BCAAs to replenish depleted levels and start repairing and rebuilding lean muscle tissue. Whey protein is an excellent source of the essential amino acid leucine. Leucine is important for athletes as it plays a key role in promoting muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth. Research has shown that individuals who exercise benefit from diets high in leucine and have more lean muscle tissue and less body fat compared to individuals whose diet VITAMIN RETAILER 41 FEBRUARY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION contains lower levels of leucine. Whey protein is a soluble easy to digest protein and is efficiently absorbed into the body. It is often referred to as a fast protein for its ability to quickly provide nourishment to muscles. Whey protein helps athletes maintain a healthy immune system by increasing the levels of glutathione in the body. Glutathione is an antioxidant required for a healthy immune system. Exercise and resistance training may reduce glutathione levels. Exercise can strengthen the cardiovascular system bones muscles joints and reduce body fat. Exercise can also improve flexibility balance and coordination. If you want to see all of these benefits cross training is the best way to do it. Before you get started you re going to need to fuel your new routine. M URRAY ND nless you have experienced anxiety or a panic attack it s hard to imagine how uncomfortable these experiences are. More than 20 million Americans suffer from anxiety-- an unpleasant emotional state ranging from mild unease to intense fear. Anxiety differs from fear in that while fear is a rational response to a real danger anxiety usually lacks a clear or realistic cause. Severe anxiety will often produce what are known as panic attacks --intense feelings of fear. Panic attacks are most often associated with agoraphobia an intense fear of being alone or being in public places. U there is a lack of oxygen. If people who get panic attacks are injected with lactate severe panic attacks are produced. In normal individuals nothing happens. So it appears that individuals with anxiety may be sensitive to lactate. In other words lactate may be causing their anxiety. Reducing the level of lactate is a critical goal in the treatment of anxiety and panic attacks. Yet this goal is completely 100 percent ignored by most physicians. Reducing Lactate Levels There are six nutritional factors that may be responsible for elevated lactate levels in individuals with anxiety 1. Alcohol 2. Caffeine 3. Sugar 4. Deficiency of the B vitamins niacin pyridoxine and thiamin 5. Deficiency of calcium or magnesium 6. Food allergies By avoiding alcohol caffeine sugar and food allergens people with anxiety can go a long way toward relieving their symptoms. Simply eliminating coffee can result in complete relief from symptoms. What Causes Anxiety Clinical anxiety including panic attacks can be produced by psychological stress as well as biochemical factors such as caffeine and certain drugs. Perhaps the most significant biochemical disturbance noted in people with anxiety and panic attacks is an elevated blood lactic acid level. Lactate (the soluble form of lactic acid) is the final product in the breakdown of blood sugar (glucose) when 44 VITAMIN RETAILER This recommendation may seem too simple to be valid but substantial clinical evidence indicates that in many cases it is all that is necessary. For example one study dealt with four men and two women who had generalized anxiety or panic disorder. Their caffeine consumption ranged from 11 2 to 31 2 cups of coffee per day. Avoiding caffeine for one week brought about significant relief of symptoms. The degree of improvement was so noticeable that all patients volunteered to continue abstaining from caffeine. Previously these patients had been only minimally helped by drug therapy. Follow-up exams six to 18 months afterward indicated that five out of the six patients were completely without symptoms. Magnesium The Calming Mineral Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions of the human body including activation of various chemical enzymes regulation of the concentration levels of other vital nutrients and optimal functioning of most body organs including the WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM FEBRUARY 2017 brain. A deficiency in this mineral has been reported to lead to symptoms of anxiety depression irritability fear insomnia confusion restlessness and memory loss--symptoms common to people with anxiety disorders. Magnesium supplementation has been shown to help relieve symptoms of anxiety. In one double-blind study 264 people diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder were given either a placebo or 300 mg of magnesium. The group getting the magnesium showed a statistically significant reduction in anxiety and depression. Clinical studies with PharmaGABA a natural form of GABA manufactured via fermentation have shown it to produce significant anti-stress effects. Specifically PharmaGABA as been shown to produce relaxation as evidenced by changes in brain wave patterns as well as reduce markers of stress and anxiety including salivary cortisol levels. One of the great things about PharmaGABA is that it is fast-acting has it has been shown to promote feelings of calmness with increased mental focus and clarity within five minutes after taking it. The typical dosage is 100 to 200 mg up to three times daily. Kava Omega-3 Fatty Acids Anxiety and depression appear to be linked to lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The mechanism appears to be that both depression and anxiety can enhance the production of pro-inflammatory compounds known as cytokines. Cytokines not only promote inflammation but they appear to impact the way that we feel as well. The positive results with fish oil supplements in clinical depression are well documented. In regards to anxiety clinical studies in anxiety with fish oil supplements have yielded impressive results in preliminary studies. In one study fish oil supplementation decreased feelings of anger and anxiety in substance abusers. In a detailed study in medical students 2.5 g of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils daily showed a 14 percent decrease in cytokine production and a 20 percent reduction in anxiety symptoms. Flaxseed oil a source of the shortchain omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid has also showed anti-anxiety effects. In one study three out of four patients with a history of agoraphobia for 10 or more years improved within two to three months after taking flaxseed oil at a dosage of 2 to 6 tablespoons daily in divided doses depending upon response. All patients had signs of essential fatty acid deficiency such as dry skin dandruff brittle fingernails that grow slowly and nerve disorders. Kava (Piper methysticum) has been used for centuries by South Pacific Islanders to enhance relaxation improve mood and support sleep. Kava extracts standardized for kavalactones have been shown in numerous double-blind studies to help calm nervousness and minimize the negative effects of stress. Recent research has confirmed the safety and efficacy of kava extracts prompting its reintroduction to the marketplace. Kava extract was shown quite helpful for relief of symptoms associated with generalized anxiety disorder. This condition is characterized by excessive and persistent worry that is difficult to control along with restlessness insomnia poor concentration irritability fatigue and muscle tension. For people with insomnia and sleep disturbances linked to anxiety tension and restlessness 200 mg of kava extract daily for four weeks improved sleep quality and the recuperative effect of sleep compared to placebo. Kava also led to improvements in well being and anxiousness and the herb was well tolerated with no adverse events reported in this study. The dosage of kava preparations is based on their level of kavalactones. As a result of clinical studies kava extracts standardized for kavalactones the recommendation for anxiety-relieving effects is 45 to 70 mg of kavalactones up to three times daily. VR Michael T. While working on research about a highly-concentrated trace mineral water in his lab through the grace of God as he himself later recounted he decided to mix the water with another element he was working with. Through this stroke of genius or divine intervention Willard discovered a formula that changed water s molecular structure Knowing that he had to share this product with the world Willard called it Catalyst Altered Water because the newly-created product caused the formation of a patented catalyst that alters the structure of water making water behave in a manner that had not been reported in the literature as stated by Willard. As opposed to regular water Willard Water which the product was later renamed to boost the body s ability to perform a variety of functions including digestion nutrient assimilation and toxin removal. Willard Water helps the body break down food nutrients minerals and toxin particles more efficiently into even smaller pieces so the body can better process them easier. Even though this product sounds too good to be true this miraculous discovery has been backed by multiple studies conducted by reputable scientists and institutions all over the world including Purdue University the University of Washington the University of British Columbia the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and many others. These studies have shown that Willard Water helps with digestion stimulates the absorption and effectiveness of antioxidants and increases the body s ability to absorb vitamins especially water-soluble vitamins such as those in the B Complex group. Forty years of research clearly illustrates that adding Willard Water to one s daily diet helps the body to maximize the effectiveness of vitamins antioxidants beverage. Users are advised to drink three to five 8-oz. glasses of diluted Willard Water per day for maximum effectiveness. Both Willard Water products are available in 8- 16- and 32-oz. sizes. Willard Water s parent company CAW Industries supports sales through a nationwide radio and print advertising campaign that reaches millions of potential customers each week. They also offer live demonstrations of Willard Water products and follow up with retailers (brochures studies etc.) to help to educate consumers about their products. and mineral supplements. Willard Water is great for customers who want to maximize the effectiveness of their supplements or are in need of enhancing their overall bioavailability. Willard Water also has a pH value of 12.3 and when diluted as directed permanently increases water pH by up to two points. Willard Water is sold in a concentrate form and customers can choose either the Willard Water CLEAR or the Willard Water DARK. The CLEAR Concentrate contains about double the patented catalyst than the DARK. The CLEAR concentrate must be diluted according to instructions to ensure maximum effectiveness. Users add one-fourth of a teaspoon of liquid Willard Water to 8 oz. of distilled filtered spring or tap water. It can also be added to smoothies tea juice or other non-carbonated liquids. The DARK concentrate contains about half the patented catalyst as the CLEAR. However the DARK also contains fossilized organics which include amino acids activated carbon and about two dozen readily available trace minerals. Just like the CLEAR concentrate the DARK must be diluted according to instructions. Three-fourths of a teaspoon is added to 8 oz. of non-carbonated Mission Statement The mission of CAW Industries Inc. stems from Dr. Willard s personal beliefs in one s responsibility to the greater good of all mankind. When a chemical comes in contact with the mucous membrane beneath the tongue or buccal mucosa it diffuses through it. Well known for his innovations in sinus and allergy therapy Grossan is the founder of Hydro Med Inc. that markets the Hydro Pulse nasal-sinus irrigator which Time magazine called the Invention of the Year in 2000. He discovered the HydroPulse as a natural treatment for allergy and sinus problems for pilots and divers who are not permitted to take antibiotics while on duty. Grossan has talked about his whole body approach for resolving allergy and sinus conditions on radio and television and in peer-reviewed medical journals and other publications. Here he discusses The Whole Body Approach to Allergy and Sinus Health his seventh and most recent book. WITH SHARI BARBANEL develop good immune responses for example the child never ate from the floor didn t have a dog etc. have a higher incidence of allergies. If you withhold antibiotics when the child has a simple cold you allow that child to develop normal immunity. toast before you get out of bed. Question How can stress and sleep (or a lack of it) affect a person s allergies Answer Stress floods the body with the wrong chemicals and makes any condition worse especially allergy. Poor sleep causes fatigue. When the body is fatigued it has less energy for the allergy task. Question What can people do to help control their allergy symptoms Answer It is most important to Murray Grossan MD ENT-otolaryngologist Phone (310) 275-8738 drgrossan yahoo.com www.grossaninstitute.com understand that allergy is all about arithmetic. Here are the factors that add up for allergy Pollen Fatigue Stress Cleaning sprays Dust Perfume odors Bedroom dust Auto diesel fumes When the arithmetic of above factors is a 10 then one has allergy symptoms. For example on days when pollen is a two and if you add perfumed lipstick--a three bedroom dust a three lack of sleep a three this would total 11 which would result in allergy symptoms. On the days the pollen is a two if you don t wear perfumed lipstick then you won t have allergy symptoms. Another factor in allergy is that during allergy season your thermostat is crooked. Instead of warming up normally with temperature changes you sneeze and hack. This does warm your body but it can start a cascade that can last all day. Therefore the temperature change of a warm bed to a cold floor often starts a cascade of sneezing and hacking you avoid this with breakfast in bed--hot tea with a cookie or Question What are some tips you share with patients regarding allergies and how to approach them Answer Keep an allergy diary. Every time you eat raw fish do you get an allergy Your local paper may have a pollen calendar or go to www.pollen.com and observe your symptoms as per the pollen count. Know where to go for allergy relief usually the higher elevations are best and so is the seashore. Never get chilled--always carry a jacket for in and out of air conditioning. Hot tea is good iced drinks make allergy worse. When allergy is bad avoid fresh foods eat only cooked foods or canned. Breakfast in bed for allergy hot tea before getting out of bed--can be a thermos or a plug-in. Allergy does not cause sinus disease. But at the end of a bad allergy the nasal cilia that move bacteria out of the nose are exhausted the bacteria remain in place and multiply. Tea lemon and honey humming and pulsed irrigation are all done to restore good cilia movement. What was your motivation for writing The Whole Body Approach to Allergy and Sinus Health Question Answer It is evident that a single pill is not sufficient for allergy sinus relief. It is essential to treat the whole patient reduce stress improve immune system better sleep-- include the brain to aid the therapy. Why do some people develop allergies Question Answer In some cases the mother and father have asthma and then the child inherits a sensitivity. For others it is a matter of failing to develop proper immune responses. For example children brought up on antibiotics every time they sneeze have a much higher incidence of asthma.
