In addition to leading the team in tackles the third-year standout from Western Illinois University gained NFL-wide notoriety for his emotional outbursts including an incident in Buffalo when he flipped off Bills fans with both middle fingers. After drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during a late-season loss and then getting into a shouting match with an official following the game one Miami sports columnist wrote that Cox needed psychiatric help. The Monday after that game I asked to speak to the then-25-year-old. I was in my second year as a beat writer covering the Dolphins for Gannett News Service. Cox and I had developed a decent rapport as far as sports writers and athletes go. He had been brutally candid with me in the past including some jaw-dropping revelations about growing up on the crime-riddled streets of East St. Louis-- and the drug dealers who recognized his talent protected him and helped him through college. A member of the Dolphins public relations team led me into a locker room that was empty except for Cox. He invited me to take a seat next to his locker after some small talk he began speaking in hushed tones about the letters he had been receiving that year. Hate letters from anonymous strangers. Racist attacks. Ugliness directed at his wife and children. Death threats. He reached into his locker and showed me one of the notes there was no return address but the postmark read Buffalo. The hate he said had changed him. The next day I wrote a column about my conversation with Cox suggesting among other things that armchair psychiatrists shouldn t rush to judgment without knowing the entire story. I was reminded of that interview as I waited to speak to Ryan Lochte for this month s cover story. Lochte who has Fort Lauderdale connections through his agent was in town to shoot a TV commercial for Broward-based Debt.com Lifestyle was fortunate enough to gain an exclusive sit-down with the Olympic swimmer who made international headlines for all the wrong reasons at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. A bout of brainstorming led to LaudyPOP an eccentric festival celebrating Fort Lauderdale s burgeoning cultural and culinary scenes. The inaugural event March 10 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park (3109 E. Sunrise Blvd.) will be one night of the greatest experiences in Fort Lauderdale he says. Dapuzzo who jokes that he has an obsession with Fort Lauderdale has been to countless events for work and pleasure--he does marketing and events for The Atlantic Hotel & Spa and its Beauty & the Feast restaurant. But he noticed that in general there wasn t much differentiating them. LaudyPOP was inspired by the ability of other cities to take local events a step further combining art food and spirits with interactive performances and live music. We can do it in our own way he recalls thinking. We can make it unique to who we are and what we do. Local restaurants (hot spots such as Ocean 2000 and new hidden establishments such as Park & Ocean) will serve food on sticks. The event proved to be a South Florida sensation paralleling the success of several local gourmet doughnut shops and it looks like the craze is far from fading. On March 30 Vine Communications once again presents the festival--this time at MAPS Backlot a 10 500-square-foot outdoor event space at 342 NW 24th St. Miami. Guests voted Broward s own Mojo Donuts the winner of last year s festival for its Raspberry Glaze doughnut. It s a quality doughnut says owner Shawn Neifeld. I ll put it up against anybody. Winning didn t make Neifeld arrogant in fact he s his own worst critic. When asked if Mojo (7906 Pines Blvd. Hollywood) will return to the outdoor event to defend its title he lets out a reluctant sigh and a cartoonish eye roll. I guess now that we have a store in Miami my partner wants to do it he says. But I don t think it s a good representation of our style of product. Neifeld opened Mojo with his wife Shelly about five years ago. He foresaw the craze when gourmet doughnut shops like Voodoo Doughnut in Oregon popped up around the country. It was about timing just as much as determination. His area only had Krispy Kreme Dunkin Donuts and The Dandee Donut Factory which although old-school is a damn good doughnut he says. He had all the ingredients for success he succe says--other than knowing how to make a ma doughnut. Through trial and error he found his recipe for soft fluffy doughnuts. The one caveat It has to be made on-site. Honestly if you make a doughnut on premises it s hard to screw that up he says. It ain t easy to make a doughnut trust me but if m you can make a decent doughnut it s hard not to like it. Executive chef Anthony Hoff of Boca Raton s City Fish Market and longtime friend and local chef Robby Bushman are challenging the lessthan-stellar reputation of gas station food at Los Bocados the Parkland restaurant serving up refined tacos and other Mexican cuisine. It s eclectic says Bushman of the concept that opened in October. That s a good way to describe our business and our clientele. They meet local business people stopping in for a quick lunch. A group of moms come in for dinner with their children. On a blind date a man and woman eat at one of the blue picnic tables outside. The idea for Los Bocados--which translates to snacks a bite or mouth in Spanish--was healthy fast-casual order-and-go. Half of its customers do that while the other half stay--and take their time. (One night a group of 10 sat at the high-top table for three hours.) Pleasantly surprised the chefs recently ordered more tables. In our eyes we ve always known this was going to be successful--we re putting out a good product Hoff says. If you put out good food they will come. But we [also assumed] it was going to take some time we didn t expect it to escalate this quickly. In the 427-square-foot kitchen the fiveperson staff makes everything as healthy as possible with the best ingredients as possible and with the most-sound cooking techniques as possible Bushman explains. From meats to sauces it s all made to order and handcrafted with the exception of the 4-inch masa tortillas made by a local artisan. The narrow menu features tacos served three at a time a toasted carne asada burrito a build-your-own Bocado bowl and hongolitas two mini quesadillas made with roasted wild mushrooms Monterey Jack cheese pickled red onion smoky aioli and crema between two masa tortillas. The most common order is the off-menu taco combo allowing customers to try chicken pork and carne asada tacos. Every order comes with chips and salsa. Our big thing is every bite Hoff says. When you bite into it everything that you re looking for is in there. You ll get heat from the salsa a little bit of crunch and a little bit of acid from the pickled red onions. Then the sauces on top ... Hoff trails off closing his eyes and smiling. Los Bocados which recently began opening on Sundays also has been taking catering gigs from corporate parties to weddings. For the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea resident part of that creativity comes from a challenge. Although she graduated with a criminal justice degree from Western Illinois University-- I wanted to go to law school she says--Schottke found the rewards of working out suited her better. I like to motivate people. Fitness can have a big impact and can change a person s life. Soon after college graduation she moved to South Florida where the ability to run outdoors year-round instead of trudging through the Illinois snow was liberating. Running gave her a boost in energy but it also satisfied a psychological motivation-- the need to challenge herself that initially had her contemplating a career as a lawyer. Fitness became her life s mission. She took classes to become a certified personal trainer and she kept running. I had three kids and I d get up early in the morning before my husband went to work she says. I would feel like I had already accomplished something before the sun even came up. Now at 53 she still starts her day at 5 a.m. with a 2to 3-mile run. She also found that as the stages of her life changed so did her desire to learn more about fitness. When I got pregnant I wanted to be certified in pre-and post-natal fitness training she says. When my kids were young I became certified in kids fitness. Now I m working with seniors so I m certified as a Silver Sneakers instructor. She s also begun training to become specialized in working with older adults with memory care issues. Schottke decided a few years ago to add another challenge to her routine--lifting weights. Heavy weights she says. With her competitive spirit intact she signed up for bodybuilding competitions. I was only in two competitions and I didn t do it to win she says. It was a competition for myself. I needed something to reach for. The Field Irish Pub & Eatery revels in its authenticity about 100 years ago it started out as two houses. Despite its vast space the Dania Beach pub (3281 Griffin Road) remains cozy with a mostly wooden interior and handmade furnishings typical of a bar in Ireland. Owners Alan Craig and Hilary Joyalle from Dublin and Belfast respectively created the menu with the same values in mind. Their Irish coffee is one of the finest-yetsimplest examples The century-old cocktail uses real cream whipped per order brown sugar and Irish whiskey generally Jameson. I see those cans [of artificial cream] and I have a fit Joyalle quips. The Field typically serves Irish coffee in traditional mugs though Joyalle isn t fond of them--she prefers the look of a wine glass (pictured). When poured in a mug Craig says the fresh cream is floated on top of the coffee with a spoon. He likens it to drinking a Guinness beer--but with consideration for the piping temperature. You drink it down through the cream-- you don t drink all the cream off he advises. That way when you get to the bottom you haven t removed it all. It s a bit of a technique to drink it. Don t stir it Joyalle adds or you might as well be drinking a cup of coffee with whiskey in it. Instead of jumping in the man who ranks second only to Michael Phelps for most overall medals in U.S. men s Olympic history tosses her a life preserver with an online logo emblazoned on it. If there s a silver lining in the clouds that formed over his 2016 it s Lochte s relationship with Reid which started last January. The two had exchanged pleasantries on the dating app Tinder but didn t meet until literally running into one another in a VIP room at Bootsy Bellows the 1960s art deco-inspired nightclub in West Hollywood California co-owned by David Arquette. We both did a double-take and then we reached out and held hands--like we didn t want to let go of the moment says Lochte who has ties to Fort Lauderdale through his agent Jeffrey Ostrow. It sounds like something out of a movie but it really happened that way says Reid 25 a model who was Playboy s Playmate of the Month in July 2015. We hung out the next day and talked for hours. I didn t date athletes they have that reputation as party boys and players. So I thought he wouldn t be my type. Until I met him. He was 100-percent different than I assumed he would be. Reid found Lochte to be surprisingly sensitive endearing and fiercely loyal. He cares so much about the people he loves she says. He ll do anything for them. From the beginning both spoke about being ready to settle down and start a family. Lochte invited her to spend time with him on weekends during his pre-Olympic training. And then both flew to Rio--Reid to be with her boyfriend and do some work for a bikini company Lochte ultimately to claim his sixth Olympic gold as part of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay team. When trouble began for Lochte and swimming teammates Gunnar Bentz Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen following a night of drinking that bled into the morning of Aug. 14--including an initial allegation by Lochte that the group had been robbed at gunpoint by men with police badges and on the flip side claims from Brazilian authorities that the swimmers had vandalized an advertising sign and urinated in public--Reid stood by her man. When Lochte started to feel like the most hated person ever after admitting that he exaggerated the initial story Reid implored him to keep his head up and stay positive. When someone you love goes through something you go through it too Reid says. That was the hardest thing seeing him so down. I kept him off social media every time he picked up his phone I would take it away. I didn t want him reading that stuff and having it get into his head. I didn t want all the good things he s done in life to be forgotten just because he made one mistake. I knew if I was going to lose her it was going to happen after Rio Lochte says. There s so much more I want to accomplish I won t stop until I finish those goals. And when I return from this break I ll come back a better athlete than I ve ever been. In the months that followed a USA Today Sports investigation of official reports and surveillance footage concluded that the framework of what Lochte said was true. The swimmers were detained at a gas station by an armed security guard who flashed a badge they were held at gunpoint by guards and forced to pay money for damaging a sign. A Brazilian judge also told the newspaper that the actions of the guards that night may have been illegal. The longest break I ve ever taken from the pool in all those years was maybe a month Lochte says. Especially for an athlete you re beating up your body. It takes a toll. It got to the point about a year before the Olympics where I was just drained. I didn t want to swim. I wasn t happy. But it was an Olympic year so I couldn t just give up. It s no surprise then that he s made peace with the 10-month suspension that will cost him an opportunity to compete at this summer s World Championship meet in Budapest. The break he says came at the right time in his life. He proposed to Kayla following a helicopter ride to the top of a canyon in Malibu where he had a table with Champagne flowers and chocolate strawberries waiting. He s ready to be a father (the couple will marry after Reid gives birth). He s working to put Rio into perspective. And he s gradually rediscovering his passion for the pool. It s a process that started of all places during his time last fall on ABC s Dancing With the Stars a two-month stint that began with antiLochte protestors rushing the stage after his first performance. The one thing I learned about myself from that show was that no matter how hard someone knocks me down I can keep getting back up Lochte says. There were certain points especially in the beginning of the show where I had reached the lowest point of my entire life. I didn t want to go out. I went to bed and didn t care if I ever woke up. I was depressed. I was sad. I was hurt. And I was embarrassed. But I kept coming back to the dance floor and stepping into that limelight. And I kept fighting. I m so glad I did. I m such a better person now than what I was heading into that show. So yes I am coming back. I m not done swimming yet. There s so much more I want to accomplish I won t stop until I finish those goals. And when I return from this break I ll come back a better athlete than I ve ever been. The play that Robert De Niro called the greatest one-man show he had ever seen during its off-Broadway run in the late 1980s became a 1993 film that co-starred Palminteri (who wrote the screenplay) as Sonny as well as De Niro who played Lorenzo and made his directorial debut. Ten years ago the Bronx-born Palminteri revisited the one-man show including a hit run on Broadway followed by a national tour. Today A Bronx Tale is back on Broadway--this time as a popular musical at the Longacre Theatre. Though fans know him for his film work in The Usual Suspects Analyze This Bullets Over Broadway and recently for his guest-starring turns on TV s Modern Family the 64-year-old Palminteri says A Bronx Tale holds a special place for him. I still love doing the one-man show he says. I just can t perform it in New York now because I d be competing against myself. However he will be performing it later this month at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Palminteri spoke to Lifestyle about the story that launched his career. bottle. I wrote this story from my heart. Did I know all of this was going to happen Of course not. The amazing thing is that it s not just a hit here in the States. It s a huge hit in Europe and--you won t believe this--Japan. They love it there. I even licensed it for a person to do it in French and perform it in Paris. The people who come to see it range [in age] from 12 to 90. I see a lot of parents bringing their children. I think that s because the essence of A Bronx Tale speaks to the choices you make and how that will shape your life forever. What is our fascination with stories that involve the mob The essence of every great story is good and evil so it s weird how a guy in the mob can be a stone-cold killer one minute but then he s like Did my daughter get home from school yet He s suddenly this caring father. At the same time he also can be funny. And vulnerable. It s like a different code and that s what fascinates us. Anything can happen at any moment. Think about it. If you were friends with the president you d feel special Wow I have the president s ear. In a small neighborhood you might have the mob boss s ear. The boss likes you. He gives you things. He treats you differently. It s intoxicating in a way. That s also the danger. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. A Bronx Tale has all these themes. Sonny lived by the sword. And in the end he got killed by the son of the man that he killed. There is a price that you pay. But yes people can t get enough of it. As the legend goes you started writing A Bronx Tale after being fired as a doorman. Were you at a point in the 1980s when you considered giving up on a career as an actor I wasn t sure whether to go back to New York or stay in Los Angeles so that was on my mind. But I was never going to give up. I thought If they won t give me a great part then I ll write one myself. And then I ll do a one-man show. This way they have to notice me. I always thought about the killing that I saw as a kid (which became a plot point in the play) and my relationship with the wise guys I thought about my father always telling me to do the right thing. It felt like that would make a good story. You ve always seemed to embrace the tough-guy character. Did you ever have issues with being typecast I don t worry about being typecast. I ve been in about 60 movies and I ve played a lot of different parts. It s just that the more iconic ones are the wise guys. As long as they re three-dimensional characters I m fine. I wouldn t play a wise guy who was a buffoon or just a thug. In Bullets Cheech was a genius playwright along with being a killer. Sonny in A Bronx Tale was a made guy but he was also funny and knowledgeable and well-read. If there s something that s unique to that character I ll play it. Did your father have a chance see the play and the movie When you started writing the play did the message come out of the characters or did you start with a core message that you wanted to develop I started out just writing my story. My father is the one who said Don t waste your life. The unique thing is that Sonny had the same message for me as my father. Sonny knew what the streets could do to a person. This is me looking back at it as an older man now but I think I was Sonny s penance in life. If he could do one good thing he wanted to keep me straight. He liked me. He knew I would never rat on him. He also saw I wasn t a bad kid I talked about writing and acting I read books. I was a gentle soul and he knew I was different. My dad passed away about seven years ago at age 90. My mom is still alive she s 97 now. My father loved the play. He loved the movie. He was there when I was nominated for an Academy Award (best supporting actor for the 1994 Woody Allen film Bullets Over Broadway ). So he saw all my success. He always used to say to me Well son you didn t waste your talent. And he appreciates the concern from the steak-and-potato crowd that restaurants such as his serve nothing but twigs and dirt and celery and carrots. I get it from a guy s perspective says the co-owner of Green Bar & Kitchen who has designed the menu at his Fort Lauderdale plant-based restaurant to satisfy those who need meat and sustenance. How have Grippo and co-owner Elena Pezzo found a way to serve healthy food without sacrificing flavor Grippo has no problem spilling the beans. I think about the foods that I love and then I [figure out how to] go about making them vegan he says. How can I mimic this particular dish to the point where you re not going to even know the difference One of the items recently introduced is Grippo s version of the hush puppy a side dish created with pulp leftover from the juicing machine it s made with carrots beets apples and flax and then it s flash fried. It also satisfies Green Bar s no waste mission. When you hear the word vegan it comes with this rebellious animal saving activist type of political twist Grippo says. Being plant-based takes the militant out of veganism. The husband and wife started serving their plant-based cuisine out of a food truck in 2010. Pezzo says they decided to open the restaurant after the mobile version Zenergy developed so many groupies that we realized we needed a brick-andmortar location. They found their nirvana on Southeast 17th Street in a nondescript strip mall. It s been a fun ride mostly filled with trial and error Grippo says. He focuses on the flavor profile and the food while she works with the staff and customers and creating a community. Their outdoor patio a casual setting with a large Buddha fountain as the centerpiece also is the place for Saturday empowerment workshops which Pezzo hosts guest speakers open-mic nights and photography classes. Grippo and Pezzo grew up together in New York but became a couple after a family tragedy. It s how the business was born too. In 2011 Pezzo s brother Anthony 47 at the time suffered a stroke. Doctors told us he wouldn t be able to see hear or speak Pezzo says. The medical recommendation to the family was to stop life support. I decided if I had to dedicate the rest of my life to being his caretaker I would. She remembered a lecture she attended in which Barry Sears author of the diet book The Zone talked about using fish oil as an anti-inflammatory. She started giving Anthony massive amounts. She also rubbed coconut oil on his head and feet gave him cold-pressed juices and played motivational music-- the theme from Rocky was a staple. She also prayed that if her brother got better she would dedicate the rest of her life to teaching people about the power of nutrition. Five months after Anthony s stroke he came out of his coma and has recovered. Now hitting its four-year mark Green Bar & Kitchen has a winning formula too. Its popular GBK Deluxe Burger is made with brown rice quinoa chick peas and sunflower seeds among other ingredients. It added a commissary location on Galt Ocean Mile where its vegan baker and vegan butcher prepare foods for the main restaurant and where they host small private dinners. It s difficult sometimes because you want to change but then certain items become so popular that you have to make tough decisions says Peter Boulukos executive chef and co-founder of The Restaurant People and its collection of successful Browardbased restaurants including YOLO (333 E. Las Olas Blvd.) Boatyard and Tarpon Bend. You want to avoid becoming so repetitive that you get into a rut. But then you have customers who say Oh no I came in just for the fish you had on the menu last time I was here--and now it s changed It s a dilemma that most restaurateurs would love to have and one that Boulukos very well might face down the road when it s time for YOLO s recently added grouper dish to rotate off the spring menu. As with other new entries on the menu of contemporary American creations the black grouper dinner entr e--plated with a colorful m lange of vegetables--started as an idea exchange between Boulukos and his top kitchen people. In addition to agreeing on and improving the concept it s about making sure we can execute the dish in peak periods says Boulukos who is joined on the TRP executive team by Tim Petrillo and Alan Hooper. When it s total mayhem on a Friday or Saturday night and you re just getting pounded you still have to produce. Without consistency you have nothing. If the positive early returns are any indication YOLO is onto something--and something special--with a light dish that encourages the core ingredients and Asian-inspired flavoring to blend together in each bite. We do have items on the menu that stay awhile because of the high demand Boulukos says. If we get incredible feedback [on the grouper] we ll have to listen to what our guests want. 54 MARCH 2017 LMGFL.COM 1. Into the deep We ve been in business a long time so we have great relationships with the consistently works with Boulukos says All we use is black grouper which typically comes from deeper waters than red grouper--and thus has a develop parasites we don t have that issue. 2. We go beyond just cooking it you ll see a little char on it from the high heat which sweetness of the corn. 4. Merry medley The vegetable mix also includes baby shiitake mushrooms which have a nice big quality and some gingered carrots. The combination of these vegetables almost creates an Asian succotash. The roasted grouper is then placed on top. 5. Taking stock We top the dish with a miso broth. It s a traditional dashi which translates to a seaweed stock. Think about how chefs here rely on chicken stock that s how the Japanese use dashi. It s the base for a lot of their broths and soups. We add ginger boniato [tropical sweet fermented soybean.
