The authors offer an overview on the clinical trials and drug development effort regarding curcumin and state a number of conclusions and opinions they draw based on their personal interpretation of previous research. The article drew plenty of attention as curcumin products have become an important supplement for many people in the U.S. and around the world. As for myself I often reach for curcumin supplements for pain and inflammation and find the botanical to be very beneficial. As we so often see the media reacted to the study with only a superficial understanding of this scientific article which has led to confusion and misinformation. I contacted Ajay Goel PhD for some clarification. He is professor and the director of Translational Genomics and Oncology and the director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Research at the Baylor Scott & White Research Institute Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas TX. He is also one of the top scientists in the world investigating botanical interventions. Regarding claims Goel noted The authors state This miniperspective will not attempt to address the potential therapeutic effects of even more complex turmeric extracts or preparations thereof but instead focuses on the reported utility of the chemical structure of the major constituent of these extracts curcumin. Goel said that many people are confused by this and have taken the claims more generally to mean that all curcumin is ineffective. Goel also noted that some of the statements in the article are indeed true Curcumin is hard to absorb Curcumin is not very stable Curcumin is not very water soluble There are a multitude of curcumin raw materials and they can differ significantly. I That is why it is important to use a consistent high quality enhanced absorption curcumin preparation that has been proven in multiple human clinical trials Goel explained. Absorption safety and efficacy should be demonstrated in peer-reviewed journals. Goel also pointed out that some of the authors statements are questionable In-vitro results (meaning tests outside a living system) are not borne out in in-vivo (meaning living systems) results. No double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial of curcumin has been successful. This is puzzling indeed Goel said. The authors do not indicate if they mean synthetically isolated curcumin as a curcuminoid or full-spectrum natural curcumin. If they are referring to curcumin as a family of compounds which most people do it is not true. In the electronic database of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) available at Pub.Med.gov there are well over 9 000 published studies on curcumin and if you just look at human double-blind placebo controlled trials there are more than 80--the vast majority of which use enhanced absorption curcumin. One of the stated reasons for the article Goel said was to explore the likelihood of curcumin as a drug candidate with the initial conclusion being that curcumin is not a good candidate as there is not a straightforward way to create an analog for a specific therapeutic effect. It is my opinion that curcumin cannot be reduced to a few chemical structures that behave in a singular fashion he concluded. There is a vast array of physical targets that are touched by the natural compounds in curcumin that cannot be duplicated by a synthetic drug. My own scientific research and the research of other esteemed scientists around the world has confirmed that curcumin is a powerful and clinically documented intervention that has provided health benefits to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. With that I have no doubt curcumin s momentum will continue. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) applauds these early adopters who responded to a November 2016 announcement. The association has launched an industry-wide trade advertising campaign driving dietary supplement finished product manufacturers and marketers to a landing page where they can learn how to submit their product labels. The Supplement OWL is an important self-regulatory initiative that starts with a simple premise regulators need to know what ingredients and products are in the dietary supplement marketplace and who sells them said CRN President and CEO Steve Mister. Because our members recognized the necessity for this initiative CRN has invested in an advertising campaign to broaden our reach beyond our member companies. CRN partnered with BrandHive a Utah-based marketing agency with more than 20 years experience in the dietary T supplement industry to develop the media buy for the advertising campaign. The robust six-month campaign includes digital and print ads that will appear across a spectrum of supportive industry trade publications with a Year of the OWL concept developed in-house by CRN advising that it is wise to submit labels to the registry. We were impressed by how cooperative and generous all of the trade media outlets were in working with us to generate interest in the Supplement OWL said Judy Blatman senior vice president communications who is overseeing the marketing efforts. Clearly they recognize the Supplement OWL will raise the bar for the dietary supplement industry and they want to be part of making that happen. Demonstrating a commitment to transparency with regulators illustrates a company s confidence that its products are compliant with label regulations and reinforces our industry s accountability to consumers Mister emphasized. Having your products and their labels in the Supplement OWL shows registry users that you want your products to be viewed as part of the mainstream supplement marketplace and are willing to provide them for scrutiny. The Supplement OWL is being developed and administered by UL a global independent safety science company and is slated to go public in April. CRN anticipates the registry will include tens of thousands of labels by then. Companies are urged to start submitting labels now to ensure they are included before the product registry launches for public viewing. For more information visit www.supplementowl.org. NPA New Congress Brings Opportunity for Natural Products Industry s part of the effort to capitalize on the opportunities the incoming Congress presents for the natural products industry and the millions of American consumers using its products the Natural Products Association (NPA) announced that it will host the 20th Annual Natural Products Day on Wednesday March 22 in Washington D.C. A new Congress means new opportunities. This is an excellent one for our members to speak about the valuable contribution our industry makes to the health and well-being of millions of Americans and the U.S. economy said Dan Fabricant PhD executive director and CEO of NPA. It is critical for us to be proactive immediately in the new year rather than reactive. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill s attempts to influence the government s top food and drug safety officials on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration s A (FDA) new dietary ingredient (NDI) draft guidance is the most recent example of how important it is for our members to remain vigilante and active Fabricant said. Our first concern is always consumer safety and we cannot afford to sit idly by and allow policymakers to purse misguided policies that undermine it he added. The way it stands now the guidance could actually result in more bad actors skirting the law entirely harm small businesses and create chilling effect on innovation. This is the opposite of what a sensible regulatory regime should be. Natural Products Day is the industry s premier advocacy event in which NPA members and industry stakeholders are connected with their senators and representatives to discuss the importance of issues affecting natural products and the consumers who rely on them each day. This event is free for attendees and NPA arranges all the meetings with key legislators ahead of time while providing direction on how to make an impact on Capitol Hill. The Natural Products Association Political Action Committee (NPA PAC) will also host an evening reception for attendees the night before the conference to help support NPA s advocacy efforts and grow the industry s influence with key legislators. NPA PAC gives members a unified voice to effectively take part in congressional affairs and support candidates and the industry s Capitol Hill allies. Joining NPA PAC is the best possible way to show how powerful and politically aware the industry can be. For more information visit www.npainfo.org. This retailer-driven initiative is the first of its kind for the supplement industry and will bring together the largest and oldest association dedicated solely to the natural products industry with some of the largest consumer outlets for dietary supplements and natural products. This pioneering initiative sends a clear message to millions of consumers that they can have confidence in the safety and authenticity of the dietary supplements and natural products they use each and every day said Dan Fabricant PhD CEO and executive director of NPA. SSCI brings together some of the largest retailers of natural products and supplements including GNC Walmart Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods Market. Our industry is safe because of initiatives like SSCI and our commitment to consumer protection and quality control. NPA is thrilled to work with founding SSCI members GNC and Walmart and industry leaders Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods to develop a retailer-driven and consumer-focused Industry Leadership Group (ILG) added Fabricant. SSCI focuses on the entire product life cycle and welcomes all scheme owners and certifying bodies to T participate in future benchmarking. SSCI will set out to accomplish the following goals Reduce supplement safety risks recalls and harms by delivering equivalence and convergence between effective supplement safety management systems Develop core competencies and capacity building in supplement safety to create effective global systems Drive global change through benchmarking of all standards domestic and international Provide unique stakeholder platform for collaboration knowledge sharing and networking Manage costs by eliminating redundancy in certification and improving operational efficiency Increase the number of qualified auditors available to manufacturers further increasing consumer safety Address the myriad of standards available globally by allowing various schemes in the international community to benchmark their standard to one overarching standard. Design a tiered structure that accommodates the unique needs of small ingredient suppliers (i.e. organic wild-crafted herbs) manufacturers and retailers. Similar retailer driven initiatives have been developed for foods but never applied to dietary supplements until now. SSCI will continue to promote safety and consumer confidence in each step of the supply chain from farm to store shelf added Fabricant. SSCI will also strive to create global harmonization (domestic and international) through standard benchmarking a critical piece in the Initiative. Extracts of St. John s wort are widely used for the symptomatic treatment of mild-tomoderate depression. According to data from the Nutrition Business Journal sales of St. John s wort dietary supplement products in the United States alone reached 57 million in 2015. The unintentional collection of closely related Hypericum species instead of authentic St. John s wort was described as early as the 1980s. The addition of food dyes to St. John s wort extracts with the aim to fool standard laboratory tests (spectrophotometric determination of total hypericins) in order to comply with the labeled contents (usually 0.3 percent) has been documented only recently. The new Bulletin written by Allison McCutcheon PhD an herbal research expert in British Columbia Canada provides information on the growing range production and market importance of St. T John s wort and its extracts. It also lists the known adulterants potential therapeutic and or safety issues with the adulterating species and analytical approaches to detect adulterants. Sixteen expert peer reviewers provided input on the St. John s wort Bulletin. The goal of the Botanical Adulterant Bulletins is to provide accounts of ongoing issues related to botanical identity and adulteration thus allowing quality control personnel and lab technicians in the herbal medicine botanical ingredient dietary supplement cosmetic conventional food and other industries where botanical ingredients are used to be informed on adulteration problems that are apparently widespread and or that may imply safety concerns. As with all publications in the program the Bulletins are freely accessible to all American Botanical Council (ABC) members registered users of the ABC website and all members of the public on the program s website. Adulteration of St. John s wort extracts with chemical dyes is no accident said Mark Blumenthal founder and executive director of ABC and founder and director of the Botanical Adulterants Program. Detection of these dyes by use of appropriate analytical methods in industry laboratories is an important step in preventing the presence of fraudulent and ineffective extracts from being sold to consumers. This is one of the key objectives of our Botanical Adulterants Program. The sale of St. John s wort extracts containing undeclared food dyes has been reported by a number of analysts from industry and contract analytical laboratories added Stefan Gafner PhD ABC chief science officer and Botanical Adulterants Program technical director. This type of adulteration is quite easily detected with appropriate analytical methods. The distinction of the various Hypericum species is challenging and a good control over the supply chain is crucial Gafner added. For the laboratory analysts more data on the morphological phytochemical and genetic differences of closely related species would be beneficial to help to ensure presence of authentic St. John s wort. Specifically researchers found that diets high in fiber trigger microorganisms in the gut to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which induce neutrophil apoptosis and the resolution of inflammation. These findings have important implications for the treatment of gout and possibly for the treatment of arthritis. By understanding the way foods interact with living organisms we may be able to create diets that help people with the disease as well as their health overall said Mauro M. Teixeira PhD a researcher involved in the work from the Immunopharmacology Group in the Department of Biochemistry and Immunology at the Institute of Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Minas Gerais Brazil. To make their discovery scientists used a high-fiber diet and treatment with SCFAs to prevent inflammation associated with the injection of MSU crystals in the knees of mice. Kinetic experiments showed that this caused neutrophil apoptosis and efferocytosis. Resolution of inflammation also was accompanied by enhancement of the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the knee joint further preventing knee damage and dysfunction. We are seeing an explosion in our mechanistic understanding of how microbial communities in our intestines and elsewhere influence multiple aspects of immune and metabolic health said John Wherry PhD deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. This work is an elegant example of how tuning of inflammatory circuits by linking diet to microbial products can have a profound effect on an inflammatory disease in the joints. Future work may allow such findings to be translated into practical treatments for gout and other diseases. For more information visit www.faseb.org. Common Antioxidant May Guard Against Liver Disease common antioxidant found in human breast milk and foods such as kiwi fruit can protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the offspring of obese mice according to researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Pyrroloquinoline quinone or PQQ is a natural antioxidant found in soil and many foods and enriched in human breast milk said the study s lead author Karen Jonscher PhD an associate professor of anesthesiology and a physicist at CU Anschutz. When given to obese mouse mothers during pregnancy and lactation we found it protected their offspring from developing symptoms of liver fat and damage that leads to NAFLD in early adulthood. The study published online in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology is the first to demonstrate that PQQ can protect offspring of obese mothers from acceleration of obesity-induced liver disease. NAFLD is the most common liver disease in the world affecting 20 to 30 percent of all adults in the U.S. and more than 60 percent of those who are obese. It heightens the risk of cardiovascular disease type 2 diabetes and liver cancer. Scientists have found that mice fed a A high fat Western-style diet give birth to offspring with a higher chance of getting the disease. We know that infants born to mothers with obesity have a greater chance of developing NAFLD over their lifetime and in fact onethird of obese children under 18 may have undiagnosed fatty liver disease that when discovered is more likely to be advanced at the time of diagnosis Jonscher said. The goal of our study which we carried out using a mouse model of obese pregnancy was to determine whether a novel antioxidant given to mothers during pregnancy and breastfeeding could prevent the development of NAFLD in the offspring. Jonscher and her colleagues fed adult mice healthy diets or Western-style diets heavy on fat sugar and cholesterol. They gave a subset of both groups PQQ in their drinking water. Their offspring were kept on the diets for 20 weeks. Those fed a Western diet gained more weight than those on a healthy diet. PQQ did not change the weight gain but it did reduce the fat in the livers even before the mice were born. The antioxidant also reduced inflammation in the livers of mice fed the Western diet. The researchers found that PQQ protected adult mice from fatty liver even when it was stopped after three weeks when the mice quit breastfeeding. Jonscher said she believes the antioxidant may work by impacting pathways critical to the early onset of diseases associated with maternal obesity high fat diets and inflammation. She added that it could possibly be used as a prenatal or lactation supplement to protect children of obese mothers from developing liver and cardiovascular disease in adulthood but cautioned that pregnant women should always consult their doctor before taking any supplement. Perhaps supplementing the diet of obese pregnant mothers with PQQ which has proven safe in several human studies will be a therapeutic target worthy of more study in the battle to reduce the risk of NAFLD in babies Jonscher said. I m sure you will find some helpful ideas to boost your business for even greater success. No. 10--Should you advertise at all This is the first question you have to ask yourself and let me tell you without a moment s hesitation--the answer is a resounding YES Advertising when done correctly is very effective and a necessity to your bottom-line. Stores can fall into a false sense of security about advertising when things are going well thinking that s the time they don t need to advertise. Nothing could be further from the truth. At one point in the history of my health food store we were so happy with how sales were going that we decided we didn t need to advertise. In the meantime a competitor began to advertise heavily and they beat the pants off us Look to spend 5 to 7 percent of your sales on advertising. Even if you feel you M don t have the funds to advertise rethink that approach and work your budget to include advertising. It will benefit you in the long run. No. 9--Test test test. There s a famous advertising quote often attributed to Henry Ford which states that he knew half of his advertising budget was wasted he just didn t know which half Perhaps you ve found that to be true as well. That s why it pays to test your advertising. Try different methods to see what message works better. See which medium works best. (More on that in tip 3.) Spread your advertising budget around and experiment. You can t build a church with one brick you have to use many bricks. Use the various forms of advertising to tell your story brick by brick. Keep experimenting and testing. Even if something is good it can always be better. No. 8--The message. While you are testing your ads pay attention to the content and message you are spreading. Give people a reason to come into your store. Just stating that you are Bill s Health Food Store for example is not compelling. We were extremely successful with a highly effective pain-relieving product. Pain is a huge issue and initially people didn t think of going to a health food store to get something to deal with pain. We talked about this product s ability to relieve pain on a variety of mediums including TV radio print and billboards. It was an overnight success. We gave them a distinct reason to check out our health food store. Invite people to come in for a sample. Advertise a product that you know offers quick benefits. Give them a reason to come and see you. No. 7--Couponing( ) While consumers seem to like coupons I don t think retailers agree. They were very ineffective in our store. It s a time-waster to take coupons in and manage the whole process--it s simply not cost-effective. I m in favor of retailers controlling their own destiny and discounting. My advice Your time is better spent elsewhere--skip coupons WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 24 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalfactors for info about this advertiser RETAILFUNDAMENTALS No. 6--Social Media. Twenty years ago no one was thinking about social media when it came to advertising. That s an argument for being aware of what s happening in media in general and keeping up with the times. Taking advantage of Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube and the like certainly can t hurt and it s free to have your own store page. Actually advertising on these mediums is relatively inexpensive and an avenue to reach a new audience. Educate yourself as to the rules of these mediums by watching some tutorials on what works and what is acceptable--also free online at places like YouTube and on the sites. They are great places to exercise some creativity and show your community commitment and dedication to healthy living aspects of your store through pictures and posts. You can also react immediately in real-time unlike traditional forms of advertising. Just remember that what goes online stays online forever so be a smart store communicator Be wise with your words and pictures. Social media can be a blessing or a curse something that has become very evident with the advent of fake news. People can also spread fake news about supplements or their experience in taking supplements so be careful. No. 5--Blogging. Closely tied to social media is the ability to have your own blog. It s free and a great place to show your personality and educate customers about healthy living. If you enjoy writing or have someone on your staff that does it s a wonderful way to engage the reader about your store and store philosophy. No. 4--Traps. Advertising is a business filled with many wonderful people with wonderful ideas. That being said you have to be a wise consumer. I would not recommend signing contracts. Don t put all your eggs in one basket. Do tests of small campaigns--two to three months at a time. Switch your ads and switch the medium you are using if you find it s not working or producing results. You may receive very good advice from an advertising professional but be aware that they have their own interest in mind in their recommendations. Working with an outside consultant especially if you don t have much advertising experience can be a wise way to go. Just don t sign long-term commitments. Remain fluid and able to make changes and decisions of the outcomes you observe. Stay in control of your choices without being tied to a long-term contract. No. 3--The Best Medium. You have so many media choices between TV radio newspaper and billboards it can be hard 26 VITAMIN RETAILER to know exactly where to land. If I had to pick just one medium I would choose TV. It can be reasonably inexpensive and it utilizes multiple senses to communicate. People are hearing and seeing at the same time. Your local TV station will be happy to work with you on making a commercial often at no extra cost. If you have a family get your family involved in the commercial. In our first store we did a commercial at a local well-known park that has a creek running through it. We showed our kids laughing and playing in the water and then went to a product focus. No one can resist kids in a commercial. We got the message across about why they should specifically come into the store and showed our family s personality at the same time. Thirty years later people still mention that commercial to me. billboards second. And My Top Tip For Local Advertising No. 1--Word of Mouth. The oldest form of advertising will always be the best form. However the key is you have to stimulate the word of mouth to make it effective. When one person tells another person about a product that is making a difference in his or her life and recommends it--that s golden. But it does no good to have a store filled with exceptional products if no one comes in to try them. That goes back to tip No. 10 in this list. Advertise Get those first people in the door. Introduce them to products that provide benefits. Make sure your sales staff is educated and able to answer the concerns and questions of your customers. Hold educational events to help people understand the products you carry. When a customer is happy they will let others know. You just have to make sure that the number of those golden people is continually growing and that takes advertising. Billboard companies can supply you with statistics telling you the amount of traffic going by the billboard site on a daily basis. You have about eight seconds to affect someone driving by so your message must be succinct and to the point. Again you want to give someone a reason to come to your store. It s more impactful to have a message that asks someone to come into your store for something specific like pain relief or products to support blood sugar than just saying you have a health food store. With the advent of digital billboards you no longer have to pay for the printing side of posting on a billboard and your message can be changed within minutes. Here s how to help your customers defend their GI woes. By Lisa Schofield t s great to have gut instincts but not so great to have gut issues. The former when due attention is paid can help one build a safe rewarding life while the latter can tear life apart (or so it may feel). With 60 to 70 million U.S. consumers being affected by digestive diseases (National Institutes of Health NIH) it is no surprise that 61 percent of U.S. consumers are concerned about maintaining digestive health and 43 percent look for products that actively improve digestive health reported Jon Peters president of New Jersey-based BENEO Inc. citing his company s 2013 Fiber Research. Further our research showed that one out of two Americans associate prebiotics with a healthy digestive system. In fact pointed out Marci Clow MS RDN for Florida-based Rainbow Light a 2013 Harris survey revealed that more than half of Americans may be living with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and not seeking medical help but some of these I symptoms could be alleviated with dietary changes and supplements to support specific issues. However she observed many consumers immediately head to OTC (overthe-counter) products for relief many of these quell symptoms but don t resolve the cause. There is a silver lining though In addition to the heavy promotion for OTC products digestive support from ingredients like probiotics are also garnering a lot of attention in both the functional food category and in the supplement aisle she commented. Holli Lapes RD LD N content specialist at Florida-based Life Extension explained that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are very common--long-term use of PPIs have been linked to nutritional deficiencies and even dementia. Misdiagnosis and self-diagnosis of acid reflux is part of the issue she stated. For example the individual instead may be dealing with low stomach acid or H. pylori. Luc Maes ND with Kaibae in California agreed noting that Western medicine offers antacids for heartburn laxatives for constipation and other OTCs for diarrhea. In the long run the allopathic answer actually can contribute to the development of chronic systemic health problems he emphasized adding that according to numbers published in NIH s National Digestive Statistics 60-70 million people per year have a digestive problem. Michael T. Murray ND chief science officer of Florida-based Enzymedica pointed to several factors spurring the increased prevalence of digestive complaints widespread use of various medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs oral diabetes medications proton pump inhibitors antibiotics antidepressants opioids etc. Further the typical American diet is high in sugar unhealthy fats and low in dietary fiber. And as such there is an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Other causes include the impact WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2014 28 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 Go to www.vitaminretailer.com americanlaboratories for info about this advertiser Go to www.vitaminretailer.com cestsibon of stress on digestion which can be significant food additives and pollutants and GMOs (genetically modified organisms). There is an increased number of people with food sensitivities intolerances and allergies and any combination of factors can disrupt the microbiome. Another perspective about knowledge and perception energizing the increased prevalence of digestive issues is offered by Charlsea Foley product manager of California-based Health Plus Inc. who acknowledged while conditions such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) may be on the rise due to our diets and stressful routines the prevalence of digestive issues may also be in part to increased consumer education of what normal digestive processes and support should be. Claire Barnes technical advisor of U.K.based Bio-Kult links lifestyle with gut issues. Americans today are leading everincreasingly busy stressful lives from longer working hours to increased exposure to flat-screen electronic devices and 24 7 communication and poor dietary habits based on convenience rather than nutrition which all lead to more intense chronic stress. This ultimately may lower stomach acid levels (resulting in heartburn) and lead to an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the gut. She explained Nutritionists believe that heartburn arises due to inefficient breakdown of food causing fermentation in the stomach and the release of gas and acid into the esophagus. A lowered stomach acid means harmful microbes and toxins may not be killed off in the stomach and can potentially continue into the intestines causing a bacterial colony imbalance ultimately leading to inflammation in the gut and possibly resulting in digestive issues such as IBS. IBS has increased in diagnoses approximately 20 percent of Americans suffer from this chronic disorder that causes painful cramping abdominal pain bloating gas diarrhea and constipation. According to Lapes there are five major biological changes that contribute to the symptoms Disordered gut motility (abnormal movements of the muscles in the intestine) Visceral hypersensitivity (exceptional- ly brisk pain responses in the intestine Inflammation (very low grade present in intestinal walls of some IBS patients) Food sensitivities and leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) Dysbiosis (disruption of the normal balance of intestinal microorganisms) Another very common and highly uncomfortable lower GI condition is constipation which observed Peters is at an all-time high and a growing burden health-wise and economically. He pointed to data showing that constipation affects between 12 and 19 percent of the general population. The frequency of constipation-related emergency room visits increased by 41.5 percent between 2006 and 2011. Further approximately 800 million is spent each year on laxatives. He like many in the industry points to the common under-consumption of fiber which primarily maintains healthy peristalsis and thus elimination. (BENEO he pointed out has created an in-depth website for industry nutritionists and interested consumers about the fiber gap on www.dietaryfiber.com.) Constipation may also be caused by new diets (gluten free low FODMAP etc.) which cause people to steer away from good sources of fiber. Another reason for the low consumption of fiber-rich foods might be that consumers are not used to feeling digestive perceptions anymore Peters said. Today everybody is used to a silent and lazy gut. A higher intake of fiber leads to more activity in the gut that can be felt. One s gut should not be lazy and silent but actively fermenting fiber creating the health benefits obtained by fiber. All fibers are meant to function in the gastrointestinal tract. It works because you feel it. But some are not convinced that more Americans are dealing with GI insufficiencies and issues. Mark Timon founder of Vibrant Health Connecticut cautioned Let s not jump to the conclusion that digestive issues are more prevalent than ever. When pharmaceutical companies develop a new drug to treat a disorder they are compelled to ballyhoo the product doing their best to create a compelling reason for its consumption. So we may be hearing more about gastrointestinal disorders because drug companies want us to believe there is a widespread need for their drugs. But yet Americans are seeking resolutions to a number of GI woes. Carola Leuschner partner Avie Naturals of WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 30 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com truly for info about this advertiser Louisiana cited that all digestive diseases combined affect 60-70 million Americans they are often severe enough to require treatment and hospitalization. Among the most common gastric issues are heart- burn gastroesophageal reflux disease 64.6 million people inflammatory bowel disease 1.9 million people and inflammatory bowel syndrome 15.3 million people gall bladder stones 20 million people celiac disease [three million people] and gluten sensitivity [0.5-6 percent of the U.S. population] have also increased. In the elderly population diverticulitis is prevalent in 2.2 million people. Generally symptoms of digestive conditions include bloating diarrhea gas stomach pain stomach cramps and abdominal pain at moderate to severe levels. Dietary supplement brands are paying close attention to medical research that reveals how many people have specific GI issues and the causes--and are formulating products that help support the GI tract to address causative factors. In Murray s view gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) is probably the biggest problem due to the growing epidemic of obesity and super obesity. The mechanical effects of increased intraabdominal fat accumulation cannot be avoided. GERD is often the symptom of this mechanical effect. Additionally more people seem to be displaying food intolerances sensitivities and or allergies all of which said Murray are being increasingly recognized by the general public as a digestive challenge. While gluten is likely the most discussed sensitivity today he noted there are many food intolerances that impact millions of Americans including lactose casein and phenol intolerance. Thankfully since these are generally caused by enzyme deficiencies supplemental enzymes can be a significant aid for individuals with food intolerance. Lapes agreed pointing out that consumers who have taken Life Extension s Food Safe Allergy Test have shown a prevalence of gluten sensitivities also characterized as a non-allergic delayed immune response (with IgG antibodies present) to wheat gluten or gliadin in people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) that take our Food Safe Allergy test Lapes noted. And said Peri Gutman CN of New York-based Advanced Nutrition by Zahler don t forget that many otherwise healthy Americans can harbor an overgrowth of parasites living in the gut which contributes to so many digestive issues and by their nature deplete the host of many nutrients. People contract parasites through numerous ways such as eating undercooked meat or they pick it up when they travel to underdeveloped countries and come in contact with contaminated water she explained. Product Selections Advanced Nutrition by Zahler offers ParaGuard which is suitable for use twice a year as a natural and safe cleansing of the GI system of parasites according to Gutman. It contains a blend of herbs such as pumpkin seed wormwood green black walnut hull plus others that she noted are long known to be effective and optimize digestive flora and intestinal balance. Amanda K. Pancreatin is a naturally occurring enzyme that contains protease (breaks down carbohydrates) amylase (breaks down starch) and lipase (breaks down fat). This all-encompassing product promotes the healthy breakdown of key macronutrients and therefore supports digestion. Pepsin is a naturally occurring acid-stable protease enzyme that works in a low pH environment. This enzyme can withstand the acidic environment of the stomach and help digestion further along the digestive tract. Most enzymes do not have a low optimum pH so they stop working in the stomach whereas pepsin continues to function. Both enzymes have had multiple studies and research done on them to show the efficacy of the enzymes. Since they are naturally occurring they help aid the body in normal digestive functions. Pancreatin and pepsin are both great standalone products but they also work well with a multitude of fungal and plant based enzymes she said. Each enzyme breaks down individual ingredients a little differently by working in different optimum pH environments and temperatures. By combining multiple enzymes you can target specific diets or overall digestive health. She added that American Laboratories Glyprozyme is a digestive blend that targets the breakdown of gluten. This helps with some of the discomforts that can come with the body not being able to properly digest gluten. Digest Gold from Enzymedica Murray described is an advanced enzyme formula that assists digestion by breaking down carbohydrates fats fiber and protein. It is distinguished by the company s TheraBlend process which allows the mixture of digestive enzymes to be effective throughout the entire GI tract. He explained Most enzymes are effective or active within a very narrow pH range and since the pH of the human gastrointestinal tract varies from very acid to alkaline most enzyme supplements are not effective throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. Lab tests have shown that Enzymedica Thera-Blend enzyme blends 34 VITAMIN RETAILER are three-times stronger and six times faster-acting than other enzyme supplements. Rainbow Light s Advanced Enzyme System is formulated to promote overall digestive support according to Clow. It is suitable for those who experience occasional indigestion gas bloating or discomfort. Advanced Enzyme System contains a comprehensive blend of plantsource enzymes to support effective digestion of macronutrient papain and bromelain for further support of protein digestion and a blend of peppermint ginger and fennel which act to calm the gut. Pancreatin is a naturally occurring enzyme that contains protease (breaks down carbohydrates) amylase (breaks down starch) and lipase (breaks down fat). This all-encompassing product promotes the healthy breakdown of key macronutrients and therefore supports digestion. There are new probiotics formulas as well to consider. (Placing enzyme formulas adjacent to probiotics makes good sense for customers seeking to improve digestive efficacy.) Health Plus offers Prebiotic Formula based on the philosophy that feeding the thousands of strains of probiotics naturally occurring within the digestive tract with multiple sources of prebiotics may be more beneficial than supplementing with a few selective strains of probiotics said Foley. Ingredients include 2 g daily of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) inulin burdock root and arabinogalactan three key probiotics L. Acidophilus B. Longum and L. Plantarum and digestive enzymes to alleviate potential gas and bloating. Life Extension has recently made an upgrade to its probiotic formula Florassist. The new formulation--FLORASSIST GI with Phage Technology--features bacteriophage which Lapes said targets certain bacteria and encourages the proliferation of beneficial bacteria. Bacteriophage literally means bacteria eating she explained. This phage cocktail works in the small and large intestines by targeting certain bacteria and encouraging the growth of beneficial flora. The TetraPhage Blend attaches to certain bacteria where it destabilizes the bacterial cell wall resulting in the release of nutrients which can then be utilized by probiotics and good bacteria of the GI tract. In nature we would gain many different strains of bacteria through consuming fermented foods which is why we believe and science agrees that a multistrain bacteria supplement is more effective than a single or dual strain commented Barnes. Bio-Kult provides 14 different strains of probiotics all of which Barnes said have been shown to survive a pH similar to stomach acid. Bio-Kult was originally developed for those with sensitive guts such as IBS sufferers she described. The two billion colony-forming units (CFUs) in each capsule enables the consumer to stay in control of their probiotic intake starting with one capsule a day and building their dose up slowly. Many with IBS experience adverse reactions to some prebiotic foods such as onions and garlic. Rainbow Light s Probiolicious Gummies are cranberry-flavored prebiotic and probiotic gummies with one billion colonyforming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus sporogenes per serving. The product is sweetened with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin which also provide natural prebiotic activity to promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. ProbioActive is an encapsulated product also with one billion colony-forming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus sporogenes per serving. It is vegan gluten-free and sugar-free making it a great choice for almost any needs. ProbioActive also contains a calming botanical blend of ginger peppermint fennel and turmeric which helps to alleviate gas bloating and other stomach discomforts. Vibrant Health s Vibrant Flora Improved Bowel Support contains 100 billion probiotics per serving of seven strains of probiotics clearly identified in the scientific literature as helping to support healthy GI function said Timon. The supplement provides dietary fibers that are fermentable by probiotics into the shortchain fatty acids propionic acid butyric acid and acetic acid which fuel the growth and development of healthy cells lining the GI tract. L-glutamine L-arginine certified organic selenium and buffered forms of butyrate support this activity and antioxidants in the formula he noted help manage inflammatory response to an irritated digestive system. Often a bout of cramping diarrhea constipation bloating and gas will lead one to isolate him herself drop out of activities and generally lose productivity for a little while. In more severe cases workdays are lost and medical bills are racking up. My favorite saying is Every time we eat or drink we are either feeding disease or fighting it said Gutman adding that the medical community tends to push its OTCs or prescriptions instead of addressing the root cause. To substantiate Gutman s observation Brown elaborated New studies on digestive health are coming out all of the time due to the increasing demand for digestive products. There are many specific digestive issues a person could have and specific products that could help alleviate the side effects of the issue. As a naturopath for 25 years Maes asserted that the gut plays a central role in the treatment and prevention of chronic disease. In traditional Eastern and Western natural healing methods the gut is key to the restoration and maintenance of good health. Research into the microbiome increasingly reveals that a community of organisms is in constant interaction with the immune system he said. Consumers choices are driven by the results they can expect to see. Anti-aging as an example has become a multi-dimensional term encompassing wrinkle reduction addressing hyperpigmentation firming brightening and evening out skin tone. Research focused on specific benefits will resonate with consumers and retailers alike. Friese As with any research or study consumers and retailers are interested in real-world applications and results. For example studies like the benefits of using coconut oil as a moisturizer. Ingredients that are not deemed natural such as benzoyl peroxide tend to have more research surrounding their effectiveness and safety as they ve been used in the skin care industry longer than many natural ingredients. To that end there needs to be more research on natural ingredients and their effectiveness for skin care. VR What part of the category is made up of beauty from within products Has this value proposition finally sunk in with consumers Doyle Of the 9.6 billion spent in the natural and organic personal care industry skin care is a third of the market and the category is growing. Results are what drive consumers for their skin care supplements--for example hair skin and nail formulas are popular because consumers can expect to see results relatively quickly. So growth in this category may be predicated on noticeable benefits in a specific period of time. OmniActive s Lutemax 2020 as an example has been shown to increase skin tone elasticity and skin brightening in as little as 12 weeks. And while traditional deliveries including capsules and gummies are still very much a stronghold in the category the expansion into drinks chocolates and even yogurt offers added excitement and new opportunities to entice consumers. Friese Beauty from within products are still in the minority due to the abundance of topically applied products. VR What are the newest trends in natural skin care Doyle Anti-aging has become a multidimensional term that addresses benefits such as wrinkle reduction hyperpigmentation firming brightening and evening skin tone. As a matter of fact for most consumers managing the appearance of their skin rather than looking younger is increasingly the primary motivation driving their skin care purchases. Redefining supplements for age management rather than antiaging may be more relevant and attractive to consumers. Another trend is whole body skin nutrition--not just the face neck and arms. This is a major benefit for the beauty-from-within category as supplements can provide a convenient way for consumers to get skin health and beauty support for the entire body. Maru The trends seem to favor oral delivery systems in conjunction with topical products. There is also dem44 VITAMIN RETAILER VR What specific challenges controversies or obstacles are there for manufacturers and marketers in the natural skin care space Hedquist The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) is stepping up their game in our market and that means you need proof of each attribute you re claiming. This ensures customers are not being misled and retailers don t have to worry about carrying a misleading product. This creates unique challenges though because what used to be an acceptable claim is now shifting so there is more demand for research and more caution for marketers. There is a lot of pressure for transparency from manufacturers so they must be accountable for exactly what they are using and where they are getting it from. Lifton At Quality of Life we don t ask you to take our supplements on faith. Faith is irrelevant when you have research. As a company committed to developing evidence-based products Quality of Life is the only company in the nutritional supplement industry that can make the guarantee that every ingredient in every one of our products is backed by human studies and delivered in dosages consistent with clinical research. Friese One of the primary challenges facing manufacturers and marketers of natural skin-care products is increased competition and not just from the large companies selling synthetic or conventional skin care ingredients. Just like the natural food industry start-up companies are popping up every day promising to offer a cleaner more effective formula than the other. Doyle There are a couple. For one translating research into relevant marketing messaging that resonates with consumers. More specifically research that shows benefits in a specific period of time so consumers can see the results. It s not enough to say a certain ingredient is good for the skin. Consumers want details. Also consumers are increasingly looking for tailored skin care formulas and the concept of one-size-fits-all formulations run the risk of excluding certain consumer sectors like Millennials who look at customized formulas more favorably. Alexander Legitimate companies with science-backed products need to break through both the grandiose claims of hucksters who are peddling anti-aging fountains of youth and the cynicism of consumers who have been hoodwinked into buying these questionable nostrums. VR What do U.S. retailers need to know about your products or ingredients for skin health Doyle Lutein and zeaxanthin isomers collectively known as the macular carotenoids are found throughout the body and abundantly in the skin. With this in mind OmniActive undertook a study to see how Lutemax 2020 can contribute to skin health. By Karen Morse MPH ccording to the National Institute of Mental Health approximately 18 percent of the U.S. population suffers from some type of anxiety disorder yet only about onethird of those suffering seek treatment. Anxiety disorders develop from an intricate set of risk factors including genetic predisposition brain chemistry personality and lifestyle factors such as stress. The American Institute of Stress has stated that an estimated 75 to 90 percent of visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related problems. Job stress tops the list as the leading source of stress but stress appears to be present at all stages of life affecting children and older adults as well. We live in an increasingly fast-paced world stated Kurt Forstmann director of hemp products at Colorado-based Aceso. Technological advances have spurred exponential growth and change on many fronts and this has created a lot of stress in people trying to keep up. There are increasing demands from our A jobs and from our families and particularly in urban centers there are increasing demands on our time from greater traffic volume and longer lines in stores. Chris Meletis ND a naturopath with Oregon s Wild Harvest headquartered in Oregon agreed. We live in a stressful world and daily stress works against our efforts to stay optimally healthy said Meletis. When you get stressed you no longer are in a state of ease rather you are in a state of dis-ease he continued. The solution is to strategically minimize our stress exposures while also working to guard against the ravages of stress. Market Trends Forstmann noted that these increasing demands on people create a rising need for natural remedies and incre-dible potential for the supplements market. Randy Buresh RN co-founder of Oregon s Wild Harvest agreed. The demand for stress and anxiety herbal supplements is strong and growing he said. We have always known that chronic stress effects the body in many ways and that nature has provided us with a vast array of medicinal herbs that will help the body return to a healthier state. To be truly healthy you must identify the cause of stress and restore balance. Consumer education has made a huge impact on the market as well. Consumers are getting smarter when it comes to what they ingest explained Marci Clow MS RDN at Rainbow Light in Florida. They re asking health care practitioners tougher questions often related to frustrations with side effects of drugs she said. Overall the category appears to be maturing and evolving with more evidence-based products emerging and more consumers and health care professionals alike recognizing that dietary supplements can be a part of a healthy lifestyle to support stress and anxiety issues Clow stated. The correct homeopathic remedy could relieve not only the symptoms the children inherited from their parents but also prevent that child s future offspring from suffering those tendencies. It stops those genetic predispositions from repeating generation after generation. This is the driving force behind why we place such emphasis on our new kids products. Results from a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine found that ashwagandha root extract was effective at improving resistance towards stress and study subjects also reported an improved quality of life. The University of Maryland Medical Center s Complementary and Alternative Medicine guide lists holy basil (Occimum sanctum) as another adaptogenic herb that may provide relief from symptoms of stress and support adrenal health. The recommended dose for stress support is 400 mg daily. While generally considered safe holy basil may have a blood-thinning effect and should be used with caution when combined with other medications known to thin the blood. Eleutherococcus senticosus also known as eleuthero or Siberian ginseng is widely used in Russia as an adaptogen to cope with physical and mental stressors. Hemp and Cannabinoids CBD or cannabidiol has been recently introduced into the stress and anxiety product category with a bigger presence during the past few years as a result of the national trend toward cannabis legalization. There is a common misconception that hemp is another euphemism for marijuana stated Forstmann. While they both are cousins within the cannabis genre they are indeed separate species of plant. As such hemp and CBD derived from it are legal across the U.S. and in many countries around the world--but thanks to the misconception mentioned above it is only now entering the national dialog around anxiety wellness. Studies looking at the brain s electrical activity have demonstrated that anxiety may be a result of neuron hyperactivity. CBD has been shown to bind receptors preventing neurons from generating electrical currents and calming them Forstmann described. CBD has also been shown to redistribute blood flow within the brain in ways associated with a reduction in anxiety. Aceso s Calm product combines the naturally occurring cannabinoids in hemp with the terpenes linalool (from the lavender plant) and limonene (from grapefruit) to create a fast-acting non- sedative formula. The product has two delivery system options a powdered delivery method that mixes easily with water or a tincture spray applied under the tongue. There are two features that make Calm unique from other CBD anti-stress products starting to come on the market said Forstmann. Our spray and powdered delivery systems offer a better tasting cleaner and more convenient way for people to consume [the product] and our patented blend of CBD and historically proven botanicals creates an entourage effect wherein the individual components assist the others in affecting the targeted outcome. Tips for Retailers One of the main challenges for retailers according to George-Payette is directing customers to which aid is more suitable for their specific needs. With the large selection [of products] available a lot of trial and error may be required she added. Forstmann stated that one of the best things a retailer can do to generate excitement in this category is to be aware of what s going on in the world and particularly understanding what stressors their customers may be experiencing. Once the stressors are understood he explained retailers can tie in their supplement options through sidewalk sandwich boards instore signage prominent shelving as well as local digital and traditional advertising. Clow added that retailers should use their expertise to guide consumers to trusted brands and products and point to products that use evidence-based ingredients. Most importantly she said retailers should always encourage customers to have an open dialogue with their health care practitioner about any dietary supplement they are considering to support a particular health issue including management of stress or anxiety. The verbal interface at the point of sale is an important exchange because it helps guide consumers to the supplement products that are well suited for their individual needs she contin- ued. It is essential that discussion of these products is accurate and legal. Retailers need to avoid offering medical advice or suggesting that supplements can treat a disease or replace prescription drugs. G L U T E N - F R E E & A L L E R G Y- F R I E N D LY B O N U S S P R I N G E D I T I O N Health Continues to Drive Glutenfree Consumption The drivers for gluten-free food consumption continue to be mostly related to health and well-being Better for my overall health More natural and More energy are the top drivers and have remained fairly consistent since 2014. Increases in both personal and household consumption contributed to this uptick. Reasons for the continued growth can be attributed to increasing awareness and incidence of celiac disease and nonceliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and perceived health benefits of following a gluten-free diet continue to impact the market. However growth has mainly stemmed from consumers not diagnosed with celiac disease. This supports the notion that retailers listing of these products are not limited to the small percentage who suffer from the disease condition (estimates 1-3 percent for celiac disease and 5 to 6 percent for NCGS). Gluten refers to proteins found in wheat barley rye and any hybridized strain created from at least one of those cereals. So what is the controversy around oats Oats are considered a high-risk ingredient in glutenfree products because of almost universal contamination between barley and oats in the growing fields and the additional risk of contamination during harvest and processing. The mechanical separation of these crosscontaminated grains is also difficult since the barley oat and wheat seeds are so similar in size. Despite this the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rule on gluten-free claims still excludes oats from the definition of gluten and does not mandate any other preventative measures for a finished food product other than it must contain less than 20 ppm of gluten to bear a gluten-free label. Health Canada on the other hand prohibits the addition of regular commodity oats in all gluten-free products sold in Canada. However it will allow gluten-free oats providing there is sufficient evidence that they have been subjected to special processes to ensure they are safe and that the final product does not contain more than 20 ppm of gluten. To protect North American consumers from the inadvertent contamination of gluten via oats the GlutenFree Certification Program (GFCP) has also adopted the Canadian glutenfree regulatory requirements as a basis for recognizing and sanctioning the best practices which manufacturers need to implement and validate to achieve 20 ppm of gluten in a final product. The GFCP requires that all incoming ingredients entering a manufacturing facility with a gluten-free management system in place be verifiably gluten-free. This means that all 64 VITAMIN RETAILER incoming oats must show proof that they are gluten-free oats. As oats are considered a high-risk gluten contaminant facilities should clearly set their specifications such that glutenfree oats have been grown transported stored prepared and managed in a manner that avoids crosscontamination by wheat barley rye or their hybridized strains to consistently achieve the desired food safety outcome of 20 ppm for gluten. Suppliers of gluten-free oats should have documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place which can be assessed by the facility to verify that the supplier conforms to those specifications. SOPs should include but not be limited to seed purity field management the cleaning of harvesting equipment storage management and transportation. The GFCP fully supports the appropriately named purity protocol as the gold standard and only evidenced-based approach to minimize risk. When it comes to producing gluten-free oats industry questions whether this is the only acceptable process to reduce the risk of product failure or are there other interventions which may augment variations of the protocols such as the application of strategic optical or mechanical screening and testing that are also effective. These approaches start with a higher risk profile so the challenges are in gaining assurance with a higher risk product through additional sampling and testing. The purity protocol specifies how oats can be grown and handled to prevent any cross-contact with gluten-containing grains. This includes dedicated growers dedicated storage facilities and controlled transportation including a trace-back and verification process back to the grower. The prevention approach requires additional diligence however and has been proven to produce a higher level of safety in gluten-free oats. The GFCP recognizes intervention on-farm as an efficient and effective way to start clean for the appropriate management of gluten during manufacturing to stay clean. Sourcing gluten-free oats from a supplier who can demonstrate a purity protocol has reduced risk advantages as documented due diligence at the supplier level can be plugged directly into a gluten-free management system as evidence at the manufacturing level. Less due diligence at the supplier level results in a greater risk and thus burden on the manufacturer to provide proof of conformity (i.e. visual inspection testing rejection of the ingredient or finished products before release to the public etc.) Regardless any manufacturer using gluten-free oats under the GFCP is subjected to a rigorous risk evaluation of their gluten management system to demonstrate that ability to manage incoming gluten-free oats consistently meets 20 ppm of gluten food as the standard for a safety outcome. One thing is certain how to consistently achieve gluten-free oats has forced industry governments and consumer groups to investigate closer. The GFCP accomplishes this strictly on an individual case by case basis using science to seek out the facts and provide documented proof to ensure that the requirements of both the GFCP and the regulators are met. I have been taking dietary supplements religiously for more than two decades. People laugh when they come to my home and see all the bottles and canisters lying around--I must take 75 pills a day along with powders of all kinds. My idea of fun is spending time in a health food store looking at all the cool products. I m like a kid in a candy store. Interestingly I have a unique perspective. For more than three decades I have raced more than 300 endurance events including more than 150 triathlons of Olympic distance or longer 103 marathons and numerous other events including ultramarathons and rough water swims from Alcatraz to the mainland. Through it all I have experienced the benefits of a wide range of innovative sports nutrition products. So when I hear of a compelling new sports nutrition ingredient I am always very curious. What does it do What 70 VITAMIN RETAILER are the benefits Is it supported by legitimate science Some of the following may not be necessarily new but have lacked awareness and have caught my eye in recent months Citrulline Malate Originally marketed as an anti-fatigue supplement. In fact decades ago citrulline malate was prescribed to treat both mental and physical fatigue in post-surgery patients. More recently citrulline malate has become popular for its performance-boosting effects. The benefits are attributed to the synergistic combination of both L-citrulline and malate which helps to increase rates of ATP during exercise followed by increased rates of PCr (phosphocreatine) recovery after exercise. In fact research indicates that 8 grams of citrulline malate increased the number of repetitions performed during an upper body resistance training regimen and reduced soreness at 24 and 48 hours post-exercise (compared to a placebo). Recently researchers from Mississippi State University found that 8 grams of citrulline malate significantly increased the number of lower body repetitions compared to a placebo group. Curcumin A naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric. In Indian and Asian cultures turmeric and curcumin have a long history of use as a traditional herbal medicine. Western medicine is beginning to study the potential of turmeric in treating diseases such as arthritis cancer and diabetes. However some of the most fascinating curcumin research also dovetails with what I experience so much of muscle soreness. A new double-blind randomized placebo controlled study published in the European Journal of WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 Applied Physiology in March 2015 indicates curcumin can help reduce pain associated with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and aid muscle recovery in physically active people. The study examined whether curcumin had an impact on single-leg jump performance and DOMS following unaccustomed heavy exercise. Researchers gave 17 male volunteers 2.5 g of oral curcumin (or a placebo) twice daily two days before to three days after strenuous single-leg press exercise separated by 14 days of rest. During this trial period the researchers monitored post-exercise limb pain muscle swelling and other indicators of muscle damage and inflammation. Data was collected at baseline immediately after exercises one day after exercises and two days after exercises. The results indicated that aside from inducing moderate to large reductions in pain caused by single-leg squats gluteal stretches and squat jumps the curcumin supplements also caused small reductions in creatine kinase activity (increased amounts of creatine kinase in the bloodstream is associated with muscle damage). The researchers even found that curcumin improved the volunteers single-leg jump performances due to its anti-inflammatory benefits. Further research is needed but the results are compelling nonetheless. Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine (GlycoCarn) Nitric oxide boosters are nothing new but my personal experience with this supplement has been nothing short of profound. In fact recent double-blind studies reveal that GlycoCarn is the only supplement proven to increase nitric oxide levels in the human bloodstream. GlycoCarn consists of a molecular bonded form of propionyl-L-carnitine and one of the carnitine precursor amino acids glycine. Two recent studies have demonstrated an increase in blood levels of nitric oxide with oral GlycoCarn intake at a daily dosage of 4.5 g (Bloomer et al. 2007 in press). These findings agree with other recent work using propionyl-L-carnitine exclusively (Lofreddo et al. 2007) which demonstrated an increase in blood nitric oxide in response to 6 g daily of propionyl-L-carnitine given via intravenous infusion. Compared with other forms of carnitine GlycoCarn works as a nitric oxide booster exhibiting a special affinity for muscle tissues such as the heart. In MARCH 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM addition it helps boost nitric oxide health acting as a powerful scavenger against superoxide radicals and protects against lipid peroxidation. Carnitine in general is known to be involved in fatty acid metabolism. GlycoCarn has not only been shown to result in increased nitric oxide but deliver potent antioxidant properties as well. This ultimately leads to increased blood flow and enhanced ATP energy production. Flavonoid Root A breakthrough extract that significantly improves cardiovascular health. This extract is supported by new science that provides unmatched antioxidant properties and powerful cardiovascular health benefits. Recently the results from a doubleblind placebo controlled study were published in the scientific journal Food and Nutrition Research (April 2016). The study examined the effect of a unique flavonoid root extract on the thickness of the artery wall using CIMT (carotid intima-media thickness) in individuals with hypercholesterolemia. CIMT is considered a strong indicator of overall cardiovascular and arterial health. People with hypercholesterolemia total cholesterol greater then 240 mg do were randomly allocated to two groups as follows an experimental group that received 200 mg of the flavonoid root extract and a placebo group that did not receive any flavonoid root extract. The 110 participants were initially allocated to two groups 94 ultimately completed the study. After one year the study yielded the following results In the experimental group the thickness of artery (CIMT) decreased from 0.92 mm to 0.84 mm. In the placebo group CIMT increased from 0.85 to 0.88. In the experimental group total cholesterol decreased from 284 to 262 mm dL. In the placebo group total cholesterol decreased from 291 to 289 mm dL In the experimental group the LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased from 183 to 173 mm dL. In the placebo group the LDL (bad) cholesterol increased from 177 to 179. In the experimental group systolic blood pressure decreased from 138 to 125 mmHg. In the placebo group systolic blood pressure increased from 136 to 137. In the experimental group diastolic blood pressure decreased from 92 to 84. In the placebo group diastolic blood pressure increased from 89 to 90. These results were extremely compelling. Following one year of flavonoid root extract consumption mean CIMT total cholesterol LDL levels and blood pressure decreased. This suggests that this ingredient may attenuate the development of oxidation and of related cerebral vascular issues. The natural products industry continues to innovate and bring compelling new sports products to the market. I will continue to sing the praises of the product development innovators and the retailers that offer products that contain these ingredients. All of the aforementioned ingredients are clinically validated showing efficacy and truly deliver. The only pressing question for retailers is how to create enough shelf space in their stores for all these great products. VR For a full list of references visit www.vitaminretailer.com. They re friendly bacteria that are delivered to the intestinal tract via supplementation or fermented foods where they confer various health benefits such as digestive and immune support1--right Well only partially right. While probiotics certainly reside in the intestines there are other areas of the body where they also reside. This includes the oral cavity (i.e. tongue throat etc.).2 Here I will focus on one particular probiotic microorganism Streptococcus salivarius K12 strain with well-documented beneficial effects in throat health ear health and even for the treatment of halitosis. W bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) were shown to be significantly less likely to acquire S. pyogenes. Throat Health Supplementation With Streptococcus Salivarius K12 Strain (BLIS K12) In a controlled 90-day study 6 researchers tested the Streptococcus salivarius K12 strain (hereafter referred to as BLIS K12) for its potential effect in preventing streptococcal pharyngitis and or tonsillitis in 40 adults with a diagnosis of recurrent oral streptococcal pharyngitis. Twenty of these subjects took BLIS K12 daily in a tablet formulated to slowly dissolve in the oral cavity while the other 20 subjects served as untreated controls. In addition a sixmonth follow-up was included (without supplementation) to evaluate the potential for any long-term protective role that BLIS K12 might offer. Results showed that those using the BLIS K12 had about an 80 percent reduction in their episodes of streptococcal pharyngeal infection compared to the prior Bacterial Activity in the Oral Cavity The bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes is the cause of some throat infections including pharyngitis or strep throat. In human research 3-5 subjects possessing naturally higher levels of certain strains of the oral bacterium Streptococcus salivarius which provide 74 VITAMIN RETAILER year s incidence. The 90-day treatment was also associated with an approximately 60 percent reduction in the incidence of reported pharyngitis in the sixmonth period following use of the product. The product was well tolerated and there were no treatment-related side effects. In addition to adults children also benefit from BLIS K12 supplementation. In fact five studies in children have shown benefits for throat health. Eighty-two children including 65 with and 17 without a recent diagnosis of recurrent oral streptococcal infection were enrolled in a similar controlled 90-day study.7 Of those with recurrent infection 45 were treated with BLIS K12 daily in a slowly dissolving tablet and the remaining 20 served as an untreated control group. The 17 children without a recent infection were used as an additional control group. As with the other study a six-month follow-up period (without supplementation) was included to evaluate the potential for any long-term protective role that BLIS WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE K12 might offer. The result was that the 41 children using BLIS K12 showed about a 90 percent reduction in their episodes of streptococcal pharyngeal. In the six-month follow-up the incidence of pharyngeal infections was reduced by about 65 percent. Again the product was well tolerated with no side effects. In a placebo-controlled study 8 24 children with a history of frequent sore throats from tonsillitis were recruited into the study and treated with one billion CFU of BLIS K12 daily or a placebo. Results showed that the children receiving BLIS K12 experienced substantially fewer sore throats (0.11 per month) than they did before entering the study (0.33 per month) and also in comparison to the smaller placebo group (0.19 per month). Another controlled study9 was conducted with 61 children who had a diagnosis of recurrent oral streptococcal disorders. Thirty-one of them were treated daily for 90 days with a slowly dissolving BLIS K12 tablet. The remaining 30 children served as the untreated control group. Twenty children (10 per group) were also assessed for viral infection. Results showed that the 30 children who completed the trial with BLIS K12 experienced a significant 90 percent reduction in their episodes of streptococcal pharyngeal infection as compared to the prior year s episodes. No difference was observed in the control group. The BLIS K12 group also showed a significant 80 percent decrease in the incidence of oral viral infections. Again there was no difference in the control group. In addition children treated with BLIS K12 needed less antibiotic therapy less medication for reducing fevers and missed fewer days of school because of related illness. BLIS K12 treatment Antibiotic therapy Fever-reducing medication Days of school missed 30 16 16 No treatment 900 228 228 occurrence of GABHS infection for at least 12 months following their entry to the study. Seventy-six of these children then undertook a 90-day program requiring once-a-day dosing a slow-dissolving BLIS K12 lozenge. No probiotic supplement was given to the remaining 54 children who served as controls. Results showed that even nine months after the use of BLIS K12 had been stopped the probability of new GABHS infections was significantly lower (P 0.001) when compared to the period before dosing commenced. When compared to the untreated children those taking BLIS K12 appear to have had significantly fewer GABHS infections both during the 90-day period of prophylaxis and during the following nine months (P 0.001). A very recent published study11 focused on a further evaluation of the role of BLIS K12 in the control of pediatric streptococcal disease--and whether its use could also provide protection against various nonstreptococcal infections. A total of 48 children with a recent history of recurrent pharyngeal streptococcal disease received BLIS K12 daily for 90 days while 76 children with a very low recent occurrence of oral streptococcal disease served as the control group. Results showed that those children receiving the BLIS KL12 experienced a 90 percent reduction of streptococcal pharyngeal disease compared to the prior year. They also experienced a statistically significant reduction in tracheitis (bacterial infection of the trachea) viral pharyngitis rhinitis flu laryngitis acute otitis media enteritis and stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth e.g. canker sores) compared with untreated children. exactly what was shown in the next study. In a different study13 of 82 children with recurrent oral streptococcal infection the researchers also examined the effects of BLIS K12 supplementation on otitis media (middle ear infection). The results were that after 90 days children using BLIS K12 had about a 40 percent reduction in acute otitis media). In the six-month follow-up during which there was no further supplementation the incidence of ear infections was reduced by about 65 percent. In another study 14 children who were prone to recurrent otitis media were supplemented with one billion CFU daily of BLIS K12 or placebo to examine the effect on the rate of infection recurrence. The children receiving BLIS K12 had far fewer ear infections (0.22 per month) than they did prior to entering the study (0.50 per month) and also in comparison to the placebo group (0.55 occurrences per month). The results of this study indicate that the occurrence of otitis media has been reduced for children in the active treatment group. Halitosis Treatment Supplementation With BLIS K12 Halitosis commonly referred to as bad breath is a noticeably unpleasant odor on the exhaled breath. Test tube research15 has shown that BLIS K12 is effective against several bacteria involved in causing halitosis. This led researchers to speculate if supplementation with BLIS K12 would be beneficial against halitosis in people as well-- and it turned out that it indeed did. In a two-week placebo-controlled study 16 BLIS K12 or placebo was given to 23 subjects with halitosis following treatment with an antimicrobial mouthwash. The subjects undertook a threeday regimen of mouth rinsing with the antimicrobial mouthwash followed at intervals by the use of a lozenge containing either BLIS K12 or placebo. Assessment of the subjects volatile sulphur compound (i.e. rotten egg smell) levels one week after treatment showed that 85 percent of the BLIS K12-treated group and 30 percent of the placebo group (mouthwash only) had substantial reductions. Testing showed that BLIS K12 suppressed the growth of black-pigmented bacteria in saliva samples and also in various strains of bacteria implicated in halitosis. Other research17 in people with halitosis showed similar beneficial results WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 Ear Health Supplementation With BLIS K12 Nineteen young children prone to ear infections (otitis media) received a three-day course of amoxicillin.12 They also received of BLIS K12 daily applied to the surface of their tongues. The results showed that in two children the use of BLIS K12 colonized the oral cavity. In other children BLIS K12 colonization extended beyond the oral cavity to also include the nasopharynx (the space above the soft palate at the back of the nose that connects the nose to the mouth). These results suggest that BLIS K12 colonization may have benefits for those with ear infections--which was The BLIS K12 was well tolerated and without side effects. The next controlled study10 examined the effects of BLIS K12 vs. placebo in 130 children with recurrent tonsillitis caused by bacteria known group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS). Each subject was monitored for the 76 VITAMIN RETAILER with BLIS K12 supplementation. children alike. VR A Note on Dosage Forms and Potencies It is important to use the correct probiotic dosage form with BLIS K12. Specifically this probiotic should be delivered as a lozenge or some other dosage form that will allow it to remain in the mouth for a sufficient period of time (e.g. a few minutes) so that colonization in the oral cavity can take place. Secondly the dosage should provide at least one billion CFU BLIS K12. For a full list of references visit www.vitaminretailer.com. MARCH 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 77 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray Natural Products to Help Deal With Stress B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND odern life produces a constant state of stress that the human body and mind may not be able to deal with well without the right support. Chronic stress triggers a number of biological changes controlled and regulated by the adrenal glands. Chief among the effects of stress is an elevation in the level of cortisol. This can result in a number of symptoms including fatigue anxiety poor concentration insomnia depression sugar cravings and many more. If the stress is prolonged the adrenals can become exhausted as a result of constant demands placed upon them. Adrenal fatigue is a common side effect of continual stress and corticosteroid administration (e.g. the use of prednisone). An individual with adrenal fatigue or exhaustion will suffer from chronic fatigue and may complain of feeling stressed out. They will typically also M have a reduced resistance to allergies and infection. Nutritional Support for the Adrenal Gland Foremost in the nutritional support of proper adrenal function is to eat a low glycemic diet. Avoid refined sugars especially sucrose and high fructose corn syrup pastries doughnuts beverages packed full of sugars (soft drinks sports drinks and many coffee beverages) as well as other high sugar foods. The sugars in these foods are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream causing a rapid rise in blood sugar and severely stressing blood sugar control. It is also important to limit starches pasta bread and other carbohydrates to very small portion sizes. Fluctuations in blood sugar severely stress adrenal function and are a common cause of excess cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels are not only associated with increased feelings of stress but also loss of appetite control cravings for sugar and weight gain. Too much cortisol is also linked to weakening of the immune system depression loss of muscle mass osteoporosis and brain atrophy. Another dietary goal is to consume foods rich in potassium and avoiding foods high in sodium. A natural diet rich in plant foods and low in saltladen processed foods is the key. Since all essential nutrients are critical in supporting adrenal function taking a multiple vitamin and mineral formula makes a lot of sense. In particular vitamins C B6 zinc magnesium and pantothenic acid are necessary nutrients for the manufacture of hormones by the adrenal glands. Supplementation of all of these nutrients at higher than RDI (recommended daily intake) levels in the form of a high-potency multiple vitamin-mineral formula may be appropriate during WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MARCH 2017 78 VITAMIN RETAILER high periods of stress or in individuals needing adrenal support. Particularly important for optimum adrenal function is pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid deficiency results in adrenal atrophy characterized by fatigue headache sleep disturbances nausea and abdominal discomfort. Pantothenic acid is found in whole-grains legumes cauliflower broccoli salmon liver sweet potatoes and tomatoes. In addition it is a good idea to take at least an additional 100 mg of pantothenic acid daily. as it has been shown to promote feelings of calmness with increased mental focus and clarity within five minutes after taking it. The typical dosage is 100 to 200 mg up to three times daily. Improve mental and physical performance Prevent the negative effects of stress and enhance the body s response to stress. These herbs can be used individually or in combination. Adaptogens for Adrenal Support Adaptogens are herbal preparations that work to increase our ability to deal with stress boost energy levels and improve our general well-being. Adaptogens have been shown to help regulate the balance of several hormones and neurotransmitters involved in the stress response including cortisol. Well-known adaptogens include Chinese ginseng (Panax ginseng) Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) rhodiola (Rhodiola rosacea) and ashwaganda (Withania somnifera). All of these plants exert beneficial effects on adrenal function and enhance resistance to stress and are often referred to as adaptogens because they help us adapt to (cope with) stress. These plants have historically been used to Restore vitality in debilitated and feeble individuals Increase feelings of energy Final Comment There is no question that caffeine is a stimulant that can increase both physical and mental activity but that increase often comes at the price of poor sleep quality and over stimulation of the adrenal gland. While many Americans definitely ingest way too much caffeine cultures all around the globe have safely and enthusiastically utilized traditional beverages containing moderate amounts of caffeine to help them make it through the day with higher energy levels. Coffee green tea guarana cola nut and cocoa are good examples. In its natural form the caffeine is provided along with plant compounds that tend to lessen some of the negative effects of caffeine such as anxiety and nervousness. For example in addition to containing caffeine green tea also provides L-theanine that counteracts some of the effects of caffeine on the brain that can lead to nervousness and interference with sleep. There are a few situations where I do not recommend consuming any significant amount of caffeine (e.g. daily intakes in excess of 30-50 mg) including people very sensitive to caffeine or those with insomnia depression anxiety chronic fatigue fibrocystic breast disease or high blood pressure. If you suffer from one of these conditions and seek to increase your energy levels I would recommend one of the adaptogenic herbs described above. VR Michael T. VITAMIN RETAILER 79 Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) GABA is a major neurotransmitter that is abundantly and widely distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS). Clinical studies with PharmaGABA a natural form of GABA manufactured via fermentation have shown it to produce significant anti-stress effects. Specifically PharmaGABA as been shown to produce relaxation as evidenced by changes in brain wave patterns as well as reduce markers of stress and anxiety including salivary cortisol levels. One of the great things about PharmaGABA is that it is fast acting Fish Oil Supplementation Reduces the Effects of Mental Stress ish oils concentrated for EPA and DHA have been shown to have positive effects for patients with many different types of psychological disorders associated with stress including depression bipolar disorder (manic depression) borderline personality disorder and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). Positive results in clinical trials in these psychological disorders indicate that EPA and DHA may exert an effect in blunting the stress response. In an elaborate double-blind study conducted at Michigan Technological University blood pressure heart rate muscle sympathetic nerve activity and blood flow through the calf were recorded during a five-minute experiment involving exposing 67 nonhypertensive subjects to mental stress. The assessment was made F before and after eight weeks of fish oil or placebo supplementation. The dosage of fish oil provided 1.6 g EPA and 1.1 g DHA for total EPA DHA of 2.7 g. Results showed that fish oil reduced the increase in heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve activity produced by mental stress. These results indicate that fish oils reduced the effects of the sympathetic nervous system on the cardiovascular system indicating that some of its beneficial effects in both psychological and cardiovascular disorders are due to this central effect. The take-away message is that it is important to take roughly 3 000 mg EPA DHA if a person is exposed to significant mental stress on a daily basis as it is good for your brain and heart as well as your ability to deal with stress. She also has written hundreds of blog posts and numerous online and print articles about holistic pet care. Morgan is the veterinarian behind Allprovide raw and gently cooked pet food for dogs and cats (Allprovide.com). She is chief medical officer for Monkey s House Senior Dog Hospice and Sanctuary as well as owner of two holistic veterinary practices in southern New Jersey. Here she discusses her pet care product lines and covers what retailers should consider when choosing and selling pet products. WITH JANET POVEROMO Judy Morgan DVM CVA CVCP CVFT www.drjudymorgan.com Recently you created a line of pet supplements. What makes your products unique My main focus with my patients is nutrition. I use traditional Chinese veterinary medicine theory to heal disease with whole foods. Because I am so focused on the pet food industry I have become very familiar with the shortfalls in nutrition for the majority of the dogs and cats in America. One of those shortfalls is the overuse of grains and vegetable proteins in pet food as they are a much cheaper source of protein than meat. However the carbohydrateladen diets contribute to dental disease (and many other problems like chronic inflammatory diseases including obesity diabetes arthritis and endocrine system disorders). Only 20 percent of pet owners brush their pet s teeth yet 80 percent of pets have dental disease by age 3. Dental disease can lead to systemic infection periodontal disease heart disease and 88 VITAMIN RETAILER Question Answer kidney disease. I designed my dental drops because there is no other product like it on the market. It allows the pet owner to keep their pet s mouth healthy without brushing. Using allnatural products like Manuka honey which kills bacteria that cause plaque and tartar the drops provide a simple solution. Just a few drops applied once daily to the upper gums will improve dental health. They do not contain added water glycerin dyes sugars preservatives or fillers like other less expensive products on the market. My second product contains greenlipped mussel New Zealand deer antler velvet colostrum and algae. The combination provides immune support joint support and circulatory support. Pets are subjected to high levels of cellular oxidation through poor diet environmental pollution chemical flea tick and heartworm preventatives and over-vaccination. My product provides powerful antioxidant support to protect pets at the cellular level. I source my ingredients from New Zealand because it is the greenest place on earth. The people of New Zealand are fanatics about clean living and controlling pollution. They test the water where the mussels are harvested for pollutants. The deer are treated humanely unlike other countries that produce deer velvet. What core pet supplements should a health food retailer have in their store Probiotics and omega-3 supplements are high on the list along with digestive enzymes. Products for dental health are also important due to the high incidence of dental disease. I am currently working on adding products to my line that will include these supplements. What health issues do you see with companion animals that can be better treated more naturally Almost everything. Chronic inflammatory diseases endocrine diseases allergies IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) arthritis diabetes-- these are all conditions where pet owners commonly seek my help. Chronic use of medication is not good for the pets side effects of medications get treated with more medications. How do different age groups--such as Millennials and Baby Boomers--compare when it comes to their relationships with their pets Baby Boomers are mostly empty nesters or maybe taking care of aging parents. Their pets commonly take the place of the children that are now out on their own. Baby Boomers may have a bit more discretionary income and they don t mind spending it to keep their pet family members healthy. Millennials are putting off marriage and families a bit longer and their pets commonly become their children. Millennials are looking to eat better and live cleaner lives partly because they care more about the planet and what they will be leaving as their legacy. Because they want to eat organic whole foods they want to feed their pets the same way. They are looking for labels that say organic natural holistic and healthy. They shy away from dyes chemicals and preservatives. They are also the Internet generation and they know how to do the research to find out if products really walk the walk or just talk the talk.
