During our conversation she told me of her concern about Americans deficiency of choline. In this month s Health & Nutrition column Cheryl Myers addresses those same concerns. For more information on this important topic please see the article on page 46. The issue is that choline is an essential nutrient and plays a critical role in brain development cell signaling nerve impulse transmission liver function and maintenance of a healthy metabolism. Unfortunately choline was cast from the mainstream health scene with its unjustly disgraced partner-in-crime cholesterol and it is just now starting to make its way back. Choline can be found naturally in foods including the formerly offensive eggs liver beef and shrimp as well as in salmon cauliflower spinach Brussels sprouts and breast milk. So even now with our better understanding of this nutrient for those of us not breastfeeding or with finicky palates it s no wonder choline deficiency is a problem. In the article Assesment of Total Choline Intakes in the United States by Taylor C. Wallace PhD CFS FACN and Victor L. Fulgoni III PhD published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition the researchers analyze the usual intakes of choline and compare them with the dietary reference intakes for U.S. residents aged 2 years. They note that symptoms of a choline deficiency may include low energy levels memory loss cognitive decline muscle aches nerve damage and mood changes or disorders. For the article the National Cancer Institute method was used to assess usual intakes of choline from foods according to data for participants in the 2009-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination L Survey (NHANES n 16 809). The results showed that suboptimal intakes of choline are prevalent across many life-stage subpopulations in the U.S. Only 10.8 0.6 percent of 2009-2012 NHANES participants aged 2 years (15.6 0.8 percent of males and 6.1 0.6 percent of females) achieved the adequate intake (AI) for choline. Children aged 2-3 years were the most likely to exceed the AI (62.9 3.1 percent) followed by children aged 4-8 years (45.4 1.6 percent) and children aged 9-13 years (9.0 1.0 percent) compared to adolescents aged 14-18 years (1.8 0.4 percent) and adults aged 19 years (6.6 0.5 percent). When comparing by age and gender males consumed significantly more choline than females for all age groups. The researchers learned that there is a need to increase awareness among health professionals and consumers regarding potential suboptimal intakes of choline in the United States as well as the critical role that choline plays in health maintenance throughout the lifespan according to ScienceDaily.com. Food scientists and the food and dietary supplement industries should consider working collectively with government agencies to discuss strategies to help offset the percentage of the population that does not meet the adequate intake. Revision of the dietary reference intakes for choline should include replacement of the adequate intake with an estimated average requirement and a recommended dietary allowance so that more accurate population estimates of inadequate intakes may be calculated. So it seems there is a strong case to be made that natural product retailers should take a lead and inform their customers of the importance and health benefits of choline. Sawall is Kalamazoo said Mark Sawall owner of the store. Not only is Sawall Health Foods the oldest familyowned natural foods market in the United States Sawall s is the oldest familyowned grocery store in Kalamazoo MI. Our loyalty is to our customers and our community. We know most customers that have shopped here for years by name. Providing special loyalty sales is nothing new for Sawall s. The store has had a 10 percent senior and student discount for 40 years. And over the years Sawall said the store helped many local small food startups from their beginning and now many of its business partners have their own thriving enterprises. These small businesses working together for the benefit of our community sets Kalamazoo apart he added. The question is How does a store flourish for such a long time According to Sawall it has been all about support and loyalty. Sawall s is now in its fifth generation of working in the business he said. Our family has made a commitment to our neighbors and community over time expanding to meet the needs of our customers. We still have customers that have shopped at Sawall s for more than 50 years. And the fact that the store carries the largest selection of both natural and organic foods vitamins and supplements in the state according to its website doesn t hurt. So it should come as no surprise that the health food store turned 81 years old this year. SAWALL HEALTH FOODS (KALAMAZOO MI) Sawall s does business with roughly 700 distributors of foods across the U.S. The industry has changed a lot over the last 80 decades and has seen companies come and go. We did business with UNFI and KEHE before either of them was called that Sawall s is one of the original sellers of Solgar Vitamins--that s a long time ago [Solgar was founded in 1947]. P Organization & Challenges The store has grown over the years which is reflected by the various hot spots that one can visit when inside. As you walk into Sawall Health Foods the first area that greets our customers is our fresh salad bar and baked goods area leading into our prepackaged deli and cold drinks and cheese islands said Sawall. Sawall s extensive produce area is entirely organic which is located next to our deli and fresh meat department. Passing through the organic produce area leads to Sawall s bulk foods spice and tea area then to the dairy yogurt and refrigerated vegan selections and into the frozen foods department at the back of the store. The registers are at the side of the store and are surrounded by the vitamins and supplements and natural beauty aid departments. Heading Forward The opportunities are endless for the family-owned store in Kalamazoo. In fact although no specific dates have been mentioned yet there has been talk of opening an all-natural organic restaurant. However despite the growth and success a store cannot accomplish its dreams without the individuals who support it. The natural foods industry is all about the people at our store. We are here for them and we are still here because of them said Sawall. My great-grandfather taught me long ago that sustainability of your business is due to loyalty of your customers and your employees. We could not do any of this without them. Customers can trust their best interest is at the heart of Sawall s guiding principals. Our philosophy is different than most stores when it comes to supplement needs Sawall noted. We sell the customers the least amount we can. Our customers appreciate that. It s all about getting them the right product for them not the biggest sale we can make. One large sale is not worth as much as a lifetime of small sales by a loyal customer. Our goal is to help our neighbors and community with their natural and organic food needs first and foremost. VR WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 Stock Variety As customers wants and needs vary tremendously one of the main challenges has been having its natural food distributors keep up with the ever-changing landscape. We have a wide range of customers including customers shopping for better food products Sawall explained. Our customers are shopping for a specific lifestyle like macrobiotic vegan or vegetarian as well as customers that are shopping for health benefits or because their doctor recommended they shop here. 8 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com herbatint for info about this advertiser INDUSTRYNEWS Got News Send news press releases to Editor Vitamin Retailer 431 Cranbury Road Ste. It s a gift he hopes will reward their hard work and dedication and ensure the company continues to grow and progress in perpetuity according to the company. EuroPharma s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) provides for the continued growth and continuity of the company he founded in 2007. Lemerond said he will remain president of EuroPharma and plans to continue to lead the employee-owners. EuroPharma is a wonderful company built by a strong team said Lemerond. T When planning for the future I did not want the company to be sold to an outsider. I feel that the people who helped me build this company and share the pride of our achievement deserve to have ownership. It feels fantastic to share the success with them. An ESOP traditionally helps employees maximize retirement income and offers security for the future. Giving employees ownership also can be a smart businessgrowth strategy. A recent study by researchers at the University of Iowa Villanova University and Indiana University published in the Human Resource Management Journal found that employee ownership could make a company an average of 4 percent more profitable than others. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 10 VITAMIN RETAILER MegaFood Campaign Fights Nutritional Poverty mericans think they are eating well in fact 60 percent say they eat a very healthy diet. However perception and reality may not be aligned. As recent research conducted by ORC International on behalf of supplements leader MegaFood finds 62 percent of U.S. adults admit to eating just one to two servings of fruits and vegetables daily despite recommendations from the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) to eat five or more servings per day. Only 6 percent of Americans report eating five or more servings per day leaving a huge nutritional gap to fill. As part of the large NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) survey the Center for Disease Control (CDC) identified that 30 million Americans are deficient in vitamin B6 1 2 a nutrient found in foods like bananas and avocados which plays an important role in the production of fuel and energy and is critical for the optimal function of our brain nervous and immune systems. Survey results reveal the nutrition misperception persists here as well as 52 percent of adults reported that they believed that they get enough B6 in their diet. More than two thirds (67 percent) of adults believe they can get all of their nutrients by eating a healthy diet which simply may not be realistic. Despite the challenge of getting all needed nutrients through their daily diet two in five (42 percent) adults reported that they do not take a multivitamin. When asked what lifestyle changes they planned to make in 2017 just one in five (18 percent) planned to take a multivitamin. Survey respondents reported their top reason for not taking a multivitamin as just not really thinking of it (30 percent). To help address this significant nutrition and awareness gap MegaFood is asking Americans to make 2017 the best year yet and pledge to improve their own life while also the lives of others. The MegaPledge campaign is MegaFood s next step towards curing nutritional poverty. They ll motivate people to A take action and pledge to close their nutritional gap by taking a multivitamin and help support someone in need with a one-for-one pledge and product donation. By paying it forward they aim to improve lives twofold. Just for pledging the first 20 000 pledgers will receive a 5 MegaFood coupon to use on their next purchase and all pledgers will be entered to win a year s supply of MegaFood multivitamins and a grand prize trip for two to a wellness retreat getaway. OCA Calls for Congressional Hearing Into Monsanto-EPA Alleged Collusion he Organic Consumers Association (OCA) recently called on members of Congress to launch a full investigation into whether or not some EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) officials conspired with Monsanto to suppress legitimate scientific evidence of Monsanto s Roundup weed killer s potential to cause cancer. The OCA whose U.S. network includes more than two million consumers also called on Congress to immediately suspend all sales of Roundup until the investigation has been completed. Consumers are told to rely on the EPA to determine the safety of chemicals like glyphosate and products like Roundup said Ronnie Cummins international director of the T OCA. When credible sources indicate that EPA officials have deliberately compromised the safety of the public consumers have a right to know. Monsanto should not be allowed to continue to profit from sales of a product that some EPA scientists and scientists at World Health Organization have determined is likely to cause cancer. Congress should immediately launch a full investigation into this new evidence of collusion. And until the truth is known sales of Roundup products should be banned. The New York Times and other news outlets reported on recently unsealed documents part of an ongoing lawsuit against Monsanto that contain evidence that a former high-level EPA official (Jess Rowland) may have colluded with Monsanto to hide the health risks associated with Roundup. The documents also include a previously disclosed letter to Rowland from another former EPA official Marion Copley who in 2013 accused Rowland of playing political games and said that glyphosate the key ingredient in Roundup most certainly causes cancer. In March 2015 an international panel of 17 scientists on the World Health Organization s International Agency for Research on Cancer unanimously concluded that Roundup is a probable human carcinogen. Since then Monsanto has continued to defend its flagship product. OCA has called on its networks to demand that their Congress members conduct a full investigation. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 16 VITAMIN RETAILER NPA Adjusts Bylaws he Natural Products Association (NPA) has announced the approval of new bylaws that will govern and steer the organization into the future. The new bylaws were approved by the full membership on February 17 2017. NPA has been growing and doing more with less over the last three years. In order to sustain that growth for the future a new bylaws structure was necessary and approved by an overwhelming majority of both the current board and full membership alike to ensure NPA has the architecture to grow and continue to meet the challenges of the future. It is wellknown that NPA leads the industry in advocacy member services education training and providing regulatory assistance but we are looking to these by-laws to become a model for association governance and a beacon of fiduciary strength in the future said Daniel Fabricant executive director and CEO of NPA. These new bylaws will help us build on the achievements of this 80-year-old association and maintain our position as the premier association for natural products in both the short- and long-term Fabricant continued. The story NPA has been able to share over the past 80 years is one of defending the entire industry protecting businesses and growing this industry. The new bylaws will govern our progress over the next century. As our membership continues to grow so too will our T association s strength. As we work to protect and advance the common goals of the natural products industry we will continue to maintain a very balanced and diverse membership as NPA is still one member one vote as it has always been at NPA. One of the bigger changes in the bylaws reduced the size of the board from 22 directors down to nine eliminating the need for a separate but smaller executive committee to move association business. The bylaws also expand what this association has traditionally allowed as retailers and suppliers to avoid excluding potential revenue sources. Other changes include The general powers and duties of the Board of Directors and its officers have been updated to better reflect the duties and governance of a volunteer board primed for growth Annual dues will be paid in January to allow the president CEO formerly executive director CEO and staff to develop an accurate balanced budget on an annual basis in order to preserve the association s assets for the future. Streamlines the process for amending by-laws to make the association adaptable to changes to better meet the needs of a fastgrowing and changing industry. New governance polices have been put in place for the way business will be conducted at Board of Directors meetings. NPA s previous bylaws originally adopted in 1987 were revised 36 times over a span of three decades. The new bylaws streamlines NPA s governance document from 26 pages to 13 bringing them more in line with modern trade associations. For more information visit www.npainfo.org. The longitudinal study involving 957 Chinese seniors aged 55 years or older has found that regular consumption of tea lowers the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly by 50 percent while APOE e4 gene carriers who are genetically at risk of developing Alzheimer s disease may experience a reduction in cognitive impairment risk by as much as 86 percent. The research team also discovered that the neuroprotective role of tea consumption on cognitive function is not limited to a particular type of tea--so long as the tea is brewed from tea leaves such as green black or oolong tea. While the study was conducted on Chinese elderly the results could apply to other races as well. Our findings have important implications for dementia prevention. Despite high quality drug trials effective pharmacological therapy for neurocognitive disorders such as dementia remains elusive and current prevention strategies are far from satisfactory. Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. The data from our study suggests that a simple and inexpensive lifestyle measure such as daily tea drinking can reduce a person s risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in late life explained Feng Lei. Based on current knowledge this long term benefit of tea consumption is due to the bioactive compounds in tea leaves such as catechins theaflavins thearubigins and L-theanine he con- tinued. These compounds exhibit antiinflammatory and antioxidant potential and other bioactive properties that may protect the brain from vascular damage and neurodegeneration. Our understanding of the detailed biological mechanisms is still very limited so we do need more research to find out definitive answers. In the study tea consumption information was collected from the participants who are community-living elderly from 2003 to 2005. At regular intervals of two years these seniors were assessed on their cognitive function using standardized tools until 2010. Information on lifestyles medical conditions physical and social activities was also collected. Those potential confounding factors were carefully controlled in statistical models to ensure the robustness of the findings. For more information visit www.nus.edu.sg. B Vitamins Reduce Schizophrenia Symptoms Study Finds review of worldwide studies has found that add-on treatment with high-dose B vitamins--including B6 B8 and B12--can significantly reduce symptoms of schizophrenia more than standard treatments alone. The research on the effect of vitamin and mineral supplements on symptoms of schizophrenia is funded by The Medical Research Council and University of Manchester and is published in Psychological Medicine. Lead author Joseph Firth based at the University s Division of Psychology and Mental Health said Looking at all of the data from clinical trials of vitamin and mineral supplements for schizophrenia to date we can see that B vitamins effectively improve outcomes for some patients. This could be an important advance given that new treatments for this condition are so desperately needed. Schizophrenia affects about 1 percent of the population and is one of the the most disabling and costly long-term conditions worldwide. Currently treatment is based around the administration of antipsychotic drugs. Although patients typically experience remission of symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions within the first few A months of treatment long-term outcomes are poor 80 percent of patients relapse within five years. The researchers reviewed all randomized clinical trials reporting effects of vitamin or mineral supplements on psychiatric symptoms in people with schizophrenia. In what is the first metaanalysis carried out on this topic they identified 18 clinical trials with a combined total of 832 patients receiving antipsychotic treatment for schizophrenia. B vitamin interventions which used higher dosages or combined several vitamins were consistently effective for reducing psychiatric symptoms whereas those that used lower doses were ineffective. Also the available evidence also suggests that B vitamin supplements may be most beneficial when implemented early on as B vitamins were most likely to reduce symptoms when used in studies of patients with shorter illness durations. High-dose B-vitamins may be useful for reducing residual symptoms in people with schizophrenia although there were significant differences among the findings of the studies we looked at Firth added. There is also some indication that these overall effects may be driven by larger benefits among subgroups of patients who have relevant genetic or dietary nutritional deficiencies. This builds on existing evidence of other food-derived supplements such as certain amino-acids been beneficial for people with schizophrenia said coauthor Jerome Sarris professor of Integrative Mental Health at Western Sydney University. These new findings also fit with our latest research examining how multi-nutrient treatments can reduce depression and other disorders. The research team says more studies are now needed to discover how nutrients act on the brain to improve mental health and to measure effects of nutrient-based treatments on other outcomes such as brain functioning and metabolic health. By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta ith 95 percent of pet owners considering their pets to be part of the family it s no wonder animal lovers are taking the natural route stocking their cabinets with the highest quality of natural pet food and supplements. Pet owners are making great efforts to adjust their budgets in order to keep their pets healthy and happy. One of the reasons the market for natural pet products is growing could be because Millennials are putting off having children while Baby Boomers are finding themselves with an empty house. This notion comes from Judy Morgan who authored several pet health books including From Needles to Natural Learning Holistic Pet Healing and What s for Dinner Dexter Cooking for Your Dog Using Chinese Medicine Theory. She also developed her own Wellness Formula line for pets made of safe natural ingredients. Morgan said that today we are at the fastest growing segment of the pet food and pet health markets with periodontal W disease as the biggest health concern for pets. Over eight percent of pets have periodontal disease by age three. Only 20 percent of dog owners and 11 percent of cat owners brush their pet s teeth she said. Pet owners are looking for easy ways to avoid having their pets put under general anesthesia while keeping the mouth healthy which is why I developed the Dental Drops product. Another big concern is cancer. Statistics show that one in three pets will develop cancer in their lifetime therefore manufacturers are seeking products that could help improve immune system function and provide antioxidants therefore prompting the production of Morgan s Wellness Formula. In addition to cancer companion animals are susceptible to many of the same conditions as humans. For instance animals also need to support seasonal immune balance digestive health and normal joint function and mobility. They also need to alleviate the effects of common stressors. High Quality Nutrition--Healthy Animal Pets Category Manager of Illinois-based NOW Regina Flight said Pet heath apart from conditions genetically predisposed by breed is largely determined by the food and nutrients they consume the amount of exercise they get and exposure to toxins. As with humans the higher the quality of nutrition the healthier the animal. As consumers have begun using a wider range of supplements to support their own health the obvious progression is to extend that to their families including the furry ones. And as with supplements targeted to humans conditionspecific formulas are more user friendly and therefore more likely to be successful. While the range of quality pet options has widened in recent years most commercially available pet food is highly processed. She said Consumers want the best for their pets but can t usually justify spending unlimited money. The sweet spot for these consumers is offering quality products at an affordable price. While food choices are made for convenience or cost reasons they are not exactly healthy choices for pets. Barbara Royal a noted holistic veterinarian who formulates the NOW Pets supplement line stressed that highly processed foods can cause the bacteria in the gastroin- testinal tract to become unbalanced and can stress the immune system. If pets are not properly absorbing appropriate nutrients it can predispose them to troublesome health issues and less than optimal functioning of many organ systems she said. Since we must do everything we can do to support all of these systems to help the body maintain health well-designed nutritional supplements make sense. Probiotics for Pets Retailer Tom Donnelly owner of Autumn Harvest in Scotch Plains NJ emphasizes to his customers the importance of raw meat for cats and dogs. Cats and dogs are from the wild and that s what they are eating out there he said. The raw meat is unique. It s more pricey but people who get into animals see it s the best way to go. More and more people seem to be coming aware of it and seeing the logic in it. It makes sense. However for consumers who do use processed pet food Donnelly recommends probiotics and enzymes as inflammation comes from the gut and eating processed foods could cause kidney problems and arthritis. Because our pets can suffer from a variety of ailments as a result of poor gut health Hyperbiotics set out to develop an effective easy way to administer a probiotic formula for cats and dogs with strains resident to the animal gut like lactobacillus acidophilus lactobacillus plantarum lactobacillus reuteri Bifidobacterium longum Bifidobacterium lactis and enterococcus faecium. PRO-Pets is a tiny beef-flavored pearlsize probiotic that delivers live organisms deep into the digestive tract to provide animals with the necessary beneficial bacteria for optimal immune and digestive health. PRO-Pets formula uses BIO-tract a patented delivery method that shields the probiotics from stomach acids and directs them to release over an eight- to 10-hour period in the intestines. Hemp for Dogs--Joint Health Anxiety and Itchy Skin While probiotics are trending on the market retailer George Panagos Jr. owner of Health Haven Market in Hainesport NJ said he sees products leaning in a different direction. To me it s more joint relief than probiotic he said. The biggest health concern for pets is joint health more than anything. Therabis hemp-based cannabinoid products help dogs with itching anxiety and joint mobility. Hemp is one of the most significant trends in pet health products according to Kurt Forstmann Therabis director of hemp products. By law hemp has less than three percent THC--the psychoactive drug in marijuana. Therefore it doesn t get pets high and is legal to buy sell and ship throughout the United States. No one wants to see their pet hurting said Forstmann. And it can be truly heart-breaking to watch a pet struggle with what used to be its favorite activities. Arthritis due to aging or recovery after an injury can lead to inflammation pain and immobility. protects the beneficial organisms while in the bottle and ensures a long shelf life of 18 months without the need for refrigeration. Hyperbiotics is interested in studies that demonstrate the effects of probiotics on the health of both dogs and cats and compelled by studies that focus on the various ecological niches of the animal gut microbiome and how a variety of probiotic strains help fill the gaps bring symbiosis to the body and positively influence overall health of pets. While joint health is the biggest concern in Paganos Jr. s store he said that Health Haven Market is also big on calming product sales especially for dogs to calm down while riding in cars. Forstmann of Therabis agreed that many pets experience stress or anxiety. He said For some this is merely situational ... a ride in the car a trip to the vet fireworks etc. While that may be normal there are options for owners who want to help their pet through these acute instances of situational anxiety. Therabis makes a calming product that can address those situations. Calm and Quiet can help dogs relax during a car ride and the product destresses dogs with fear of thunder or fireworks as well as separation anxiety. Calm and Quiet is formulated with L-theanine and wholeplant cannabinoids from hemp. Therabis Stop the Itch is made from a combination of whole-plant cannabinoids bromelain and quercetin which protects cells from oxidative stress and helps ease the torment of itching and scratching. It s interesting said Forstmann a pet s inflammation system affects its skin as well as its joints. Defects in the inflammation system can cause too much histamine to be released and or an unnecessary histamine release. This excess histamine can cause uncontrollable scratching to the point of fur loss or blood draw ... dry skin and or a sparse coat. Many considerations go into developing Therabis products to ensure they will help pets with both chronic constant conditions and acute temporary situations. What is considered includes the need for product common ailments ingredient blend effectiveness like what will create the most powerful entourage effect when combined with hemp CBD and taste palatability as pets should like the taste so that they don t even realize they are taking medicine. Natural Pet Pharmaceuticals King Bio has also created a line of natural pet products that pets can take without the tricks treats and traps. And to a large extent natural product retailers customer base battles an energy crisis quite frequently no matter how healthy they are. Low energy can and does bedevil even physically fit folks. Retailer Joshua Lane founder of The Vitamin Center of Agoura Hills CA and previously Here s To Your Health in both Hallandale and Davie FL noted that he finds questions about how to improve energy are probably the most frequently asked questions I have been asked in the 30-plus years I have been a natural foods supplement retailer. A key reason for feeling sluggish stems from the opposite side of the energy spectrum sleep. Or rather lack of. Even one sleepless night can cause someone to feel a low energy level the next day when it s a bit harder to muster up mental acuity and physical I oomph. Fatigue often is a word used by people as a synonym for tired or low energy. While fatigue can encompass sleepiness it is really meant to convey a condition where the person feels an overwhelming continual feeling of exhaustion which impairs one s ability to perform physical and mental tasks. Imagine those with chronic insomnia. Pain from injury allergies and stuffiness (causing mouth breathing) colds flus certain medications stress from situational life events and hormonal chaos (peri-menopause) all deplete daily energy due to hijacking what should be a peaceful flight of dream fancy in sleep mode. There are elderly folks who don t sleep much due to their age. But for enthusiastic healthy living customers who are in their 20s through their active 60s complain that their energy level is akin to that of a sloth there are quite a few questions to ask in order to direct them to the most suitable supplement to help get back on track. Beyond sleep issues that cause one to experience loss of power supply there are other factors. According to Justin Zehrung vice president of sales and marketing with Arizona-based Essential Source Inc. nutrient deficiency is absolutely the number one cause. This has numerous reasons notably that foods are being what he called mono-cultured thus exposed to the overuse of chemicals which has created voids that used to be filled with nutrition. In tandem we also become depleted from our bodies not properly processing the nutrients that are available in the foods we are eating. This often happens due to a state of fight or flight that we stay in from stress. During this state the body doesn t digest properly therefore the natural process of restoring energy in our body from the vitamins and nutrients is destroyed. And stress has become a common theme in the American fabric inhibiting energy levels. Not too long ago in general those who had increased bouts of low energy or sustained low energy were often considered to be the elderly or those suffering from illness. Children like puppies always had boundless energy but even kids now tend to become a bit too mellowed out. Energy fatigue exists in every group on the planet and everyone experiences low energy and stress no matter the population group emphasized Aaron Glassman founder of California-based Macaccino. The stress level that we are exposed to in today s world is at extremely high levels he observed which is why it is key to introduce nutritious food and drinks to the daily routine. However according to nutritionist Mark Timon MS founder and formulator of Vibrant Health in Connecticut there really is no energy crisis. We are simply making poor food choices. Added to that he noted is the fact that in general we are trying to stuff more things into our lives daily--creating stress and thus the need for more energy mental and physical to get it all done properly and on time. Antriasian elaborated that Millennials face more pressures than ever from amassing significant college debt to finding jobs. Gen X-ers are caught between having to care for their children as well as their aging parents. And Baby Boomers are concerned about having the financial wherewithal to retire. Each of these stress factors inhibits energy levels. When it comes to the latter Zehrung explained that typical Baby Boomers are predisposed to a lack of energy for several reasons. First they have been exposed to a toxic environment--more radiation harmful chemicals and synthetic unhealthy foods--for longer. APRIL 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Boomers however are the most likely to address health concerns since people naturally begin to prioritize health as they age. On their heels (slowly) are the Generation X-ers who Zehrung said have typically been more selfdestructive to their natural energy and sleep patterns from over-consumption of caffeine and other stimulants. Chiefly he described common energy drinks are huge culprits as they disrupt the adrenal glands by supplying a violent rush of energy and a more violent crash afterward. This overuse of caffeine alone can be the cause of insufficient levels of many vitamins and other nutrients. Additionally conditions such as sleep apnea and sleep deprivation have been on the rise in this age group especially. Then we come to A Feel-good Diet First in the advice column is of course diet. Is the energy-deprived soul eating too much convenience food on the run Slow it down especially when it comes to eating time. Energy comes from food so the more slowly he or she eats the more fully and efficiently the body can create energy. Further recommend the substitution of whole grains instead of processed whites which frequently cause the post-prandial energy spike-and-crash low glycemic means higher sustained mental acuity energy as well as physical stamina. Moderate exercise daily also dramatically increases that feel-good energy. For those customers who want to wean off the stimulant sedative merrygo-round Glassman advised to suggest cutting down on caffeine consumption instead of quitting cold turkey which helps to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. For instance he said by swapping a morning cup of a coffee with Macaccino the consumer will experience long lasting energy without those spikes and crashes. The herb maca has been shown to regulate hormonal levels and can assist in deep restorative sleep patterns helping produce good energy the next day. Without a doubt Zehrung agreed the overuse of both stimulants and sedatives has increased dramatically during the last decade and we need to be constantly thinking about how to reach and educate new customers. There needs to be more promotion of energy-producing supplements and foods in the place of the stimulants that are most prevalent he said. When customers seek to whip up flagging energy Lane suggested that they avoid processed sugar as much as possible eat protein with every meal and not skip meals--notably breakfast. To start the day a breakfast meal of eggs fish chicken turkey or lamb your choice helps control blood sugar levels. This is an important component of having steady energy over the course of the day he stated. Also he suggested avoid coffee as much as possible tea is a preferred choice and Lane really likes Domatcha Matcha Tea for its great taste and excellent track record. John Harrison president of Ecotrend Ecologics introduced matcha to a large North American audience about a decade ago Lane recalled. VITAMIN RETAILER 31 Millennials who also use caffeine at a high rate and are the most involved in their technology which is a huge factor in poor energy levels as well. Many studies have shown the link between excessive technology use (phone tablet computers) and sleep deprivation he pointed out. As is clearly seen just about every customer encountered likely can enjoy a conversation--and resulting advice and solutions--about energy. Besides those who ask specifically about this issue it really is not inappropriate for you to query a customer By the way how is your energy typically This is one question most if not all people will not feel shy or embarrassed about discussing. Exciting Supplements To Recommend Trace Minerals of Utah has several attractive energy-promoting supplements. For those who do prefer energy drinks wean them off the monstrous junk and have them try 40 000 Volts an electrolyte concentrate containing such goodness as sodium potassium magnesium and chloride. This option is preferable for those who work out vigorously and thus feel drained afterward but need to get back to life s duties. These customers may also like the Electrolyte Stamina Power Pak a high-performance energy drink with 1 200 mg vitamin C offered in eight flavors. Folks who prefer shots (and more than only five hours of energy) may like the company s Electrolyte Stamina Shot which offers 72 elec- trolytes D-ribose and GPLC (glycine propionyl-L-carnitine). Another company that provides a make-your-own beverage for energy inducement is California-based Organic Mushroom Nutrition which offers a low-calorie sugar-free orange-flavored powder containing a blend of cordyceps reishi turkey tail agaricus blazei maitake king trumpet turmeric yerba mate guarana vitamins D C B2 B3 B6 and B12. For overall daily energy support Mushroom Wisdom Inc. of New Jersey offers Super Cordyceps tablets cordyceps has a long history of use in China for promoting stamina and endurance. And cordyceps is one half of an energy blend combined with Panax ginseng in Life Extension s Asian Energy Boost which said Antriasian boosts the body s own energy source ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Products that promote energy at a mitochondrial level are the most effective products for energy enhancement as they enhanced long-term metabolic function and overall health vs. simply providing an immediate energy boost via sugar or caffeine stated Antriasian. Life Extension s Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer with BioPQQ he said was formulated to enhance mitochondrial function protect delicate cellular structures powercharge metabolic processes and aid in the creation of new mitochondria. And the company s Super Ubiquinol CoQ10 with Enhanced Mitochondrial Support is formulated with ubiquinol a highly bioavailable form of coenzyme Q10 nutrient and augmented with the adaptogen PrimaVie shilajit clinically shown to further increase CoQ10 absorption promote cardiovascular health and help restore youthful cellular energy Antriasian added. According to Zehrung a recent study at Tufts University showed that 40 percent of Americans are B12 deficient. This occurs for a number of reasons he noted but the top three are overuse of caffeine many prescription medications and then the natural aging process as we begin to lose our ability to absorb B12 around the age of 40. The worst of these is the caffeine creating a vicious cycle that leads people to believe they need more caffeine when it s actually the cause of the symptom in the first place. Caffeine is a convenient product that so many people reach for when they need that afternoon oomph and it s readily available. To counter caffeine Essential Source offers B12 Strips said Zehrung the most bioavailable form of B12 which is methylcobalamin combined with methyl folate and pyridoxial phosphate 5 which are the most bioavailable forms of vitamin B6 and folate. The B12 strips provide the highest level of convenience for those same consumers since the entire month supply is about the size of a book of matches Zehrung described. When it comes to B12 and energy we know that low B12 levels can cause fatigue or low energy Timon noted. Therefore B-12 is also prominent in Vibrant Health s ProMatcha Protein which contains 200 micrograms or 3 330 percent of daily value of B12 Timon noted. Vibrant Health s Maximum Vibrance contains 204 micrograms or 3 390 percent of your daily value of B12. Some folks have energy deprivation due to stress which causes the adrenal glands to work overtime. And vitamin B12 is likewise key in Texas-based Michael s Naturopathic Programs Adrenal Factors Stress Support Tablets (available as 60 ct. and 90 ct.) which WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 32 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com naturalfactors for info about this advertiser also includes vitamin C pantothenic acid calcium and a proprietary botanical blend of Eleuthero root ashwagandha root juniper berry licorice root and turmeric root. It is available in travelsized Original travel-sized Black Reserve Original Roasted Maca Blend a magical Mint Macaccino Blend and Black Reserve Macaccino Blend. In the supplement aisles Lane suggested chromium picolinate and L-glutamine to stabilize blood sugar which provides sustained energy. I also like to recommend AHCC from Quality of Life because it is a great energy booster and B complex works to boost energy too. For revving up mental energy Lane said he often recommends Carlson Fish Oil daily which is excellent for the ability to think clearly. Most people use one teaspoonful daily or two capsules and see results in about one week. It is a very effective supplement that is easy for people to relate to. Here too B complex vitamins are excellent for mood mental focus and energy. Zehrung implored retailers to be more active in providing these healthy energy-producing alternatives to those customers at the most affordable price possible because the unhealthy alternatives tend to be cheaper. He added to ask manufacturers for sampling and store giveaways which can be critical in motivating those who have not been willing to spend money in this category to at least try it. By Nicholas Saraceno n March 16 the final 64 schools across the United States were officially set to compete in the most prestigious tournament in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)--the NCAA tournament. Simply known as March Madness these colleges and universities compete in one large single-elimination tournament that runs through the beginning of April. Although there may only be one winner once it is all said and done one quality these competitors share is work ethic. These athletes undergo grueling practices and training and to supplement this they often turn to sports nutrition products--items that can range from proteins to joint support products. Of course not everyone is a Division I athlete but (just about) everyone does strive to be a better version of themselves. If one s goal involves being in better physical shape doing so involves awareness of trends common ailments O the current market and even a look into how the supplement industry s supply chain works. Trends & Innovations As information is more readily available via studies and online channels some manufacturers such as Florida-based Garden of Life are making the transition to what many may describe as cleaner options especially when it comes to whey products. We ve seen whey proteins struggle in recent years said Jeffrey Brams vice president of product development Garden of Life. Considering the trend toward clean label ingredients it s not surprising. Most so-called clean whey formulas still include artificial colors flavors and sweeteners and virtually none hold any type of third-party testing certification. As a result we ve seen a market flooded with contaminated adulterated and spiked products over the years. In more recent years there s been a proliferation of grass fed claims on whey products--however almost none of these purportedly clean products have any type of third party audit or validation of the grass fed claim. It s been the Wild West. That s one of the main reasons Garden of Life stepped out of our known expertise with plant proteins to bring our new Truly Grass Fed Whey to market. Our whey is the first holistic dairy farming system that could not only sustain our scrutiny for the actual pasture-raised truly grass fed practices but also for other key metrics just as important to our brand--including the lowest carbon emissions of any dairy system in the world exceptionally low heard density (on average there is one cow for every two acres of land) humane treatment of the livestock and Non-GMO (genetically modified organism) Project Verification. Sebastien Bornet vice president of global sales and marketing at ingredient supplier Horphag Research in New Jersey also noted consumer preference for clean ingredients. We ve seen a shift in the market and more consumers are interested in sports nutrition products that feature clean labels and natural ingredients supported by science to help them reach their fitness goals he noted. Health-conscious individuals who are becoming more prevalent in this space are keeping a close eye on labels and doing their own research on which ingredients they should look for. So how has this natural transition impacted the market State of the Market As 21st century technology continues to develop not only are companies making a transition ingredient-wise but they are joining the online marketplace as well. This involves physical stores extending their reach via social media and new retailers establishing themselves solely through this domain. The potential challenge keeping up with competing product prices. It s a state of growth but also significant change said Marc Stover vice president of marketing sports nutrition and innovation with Twinlab Corporation in Florida. Some traditional sports nutrition stores are struggling while sales are shifting both to ecommerce and other digital methods such as ambassador sales in which social media personalities and athletes get a cut of sales they generate online. The influx of new brands launching virtually every week and often with the same type of product as everyone else has is forcing prices and margin to becoming tighter for brands. The marketing noise around these products is becoming deafening and I would suggest making the nutrition market even more confusing for consumers. However despite the challenges for individual companies to stand out amongst the pack a combination of competition among brands and consumers commitment to fitness is helping to positively drive the market. The sports nutrition market is growing substantially for athletes and expanding for fitness enthusiasts and individuals looking to support an active lifestyle added Bornet. Recent market research [originally gathered by Zion Market Research] shows that the current value of the sports nutrition market is about 28 billion and that number is expected to grow to nearly 45 billion by the year 2022. Precisely recent predictions show the 2022 market to reach up to 45.27 billion with an upward trend year to year due to the increase in health awareness among the population new product development the rapid increase in urbanization and growth in a number of sales outlets health clubs fitness centers and gyms according to Zion. Even children who outgrow a food allergy can have it reappear later on. Still this does not mean one can ignore the physical ailments that users often treat with sports nutrition supplements. As cited by Timothy Mount director of education for NeoCell in California general soreness knee pain and twisted ankles are common among athletes. Mount advised taking collagen daily to combat these everyday problems. Commit to taking a collagen supplement on a daily basis he recommended. Long- term collagen use is the best way to reduce the risk of injury and keep your joints strong so you can stay on the field. By Gene Bruno MS MHS RH(AHG)-- Huntington College of Health Sciences he ayurvedic medical tradition never ceases to amaze me. It is rich in so many fascinating natural remedies which have been time-tested over thousands of years. Furthermore quite a few ayurvedic remedies have also been the subject of modern scientific research which not only validate traditional use but sometimes even provide evidence of new applications to human health. Such is the case with shilajit. T What is Shilajit Secreted from sedimentary rocks (largely in the Himalayas) shilajit is a pale-brown to blackish-brown exudate composed of rock humus rock minerals and organic substances that have been compressed by layers of rock mixed with marine organisms and microbial metabolites.1 Said to carry the healing power of these great mountains 2 shilajit is an important remedy of the ayurvedic Materia Medica and has been used for over 3 000 years as a rejuvenator and adap42 VITAMIN RETAILER togen in a variety of conditions. Interestingly the Sanskrit meaning of shilajit is Conqueror of mountain and destroyer of weakness. 3 Among its many applications shilajit has been used for the management of male reproductive disorders.4 5 Furthermore shilajit has an extensive history of use in ayurvedic medicine as an aphrodisiac 6-10 and its safety has been well documented based on animal and human studies.11 This article will review several of the evidence-based effects of shilajit including boosting testosterone improving sperm parameters promoting cardiovascular health (which includes nitric oxide boosting) increasing energy production and physical activity activating collagen production and providing antioxidant protection against free radicals. Shilajit for Testosterone Given its historical use as an aphrodisiac it is not a big surprise that two modern studies have demonstrated that shilajit has successfully increased testosterone levels in two different male populations. These studies have also demonstrated ancillary benefits associated with shilajit supplementation. The first study 12 which took place over a period of 90 days examined the effects of 100 mg shilajit (as PrimaVie purified shilajit Natreon) twice daily in 28 infertile male patients with oligospermia (a condition with low sperm concentration). This study tested serum levels of testosterone follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA). In men FSH helps control the production of sperm. MDA is a marker for oxidative stress. The results of this study showed that supplementation with shilajit significantly increased serum testosterone by 23.5 percent (P 0.001) increased FSH by 9.4 percent (P 0.05) and decreased MDA in semen by 18.7 percent. In addition there was significant (P 0.001) improvement in sperm parameters including 37.6 percent increase in sperm mobility 61.4 perWWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 cent increase in total sperm count 12.4-17.4 percent increase in motility. Liver and kidney tests also verified the safety of supplementation of PrimaVie shilajit. The second study13 also took place over 90 days and was randomized double-blind and placebo-controlled. In this case 98 healthy male volunteers (45-55 years) participated and took 250 mg twice of PrimaVie shilajit daily or placebo. Total and free testosterones luteinizing hormone (LH) FSH and DHEA (as DHEAs) were measured on days 0 (baseline) 30 60 and 90. In men LH stimulates the production of testosterone and DHEA can be converted to testosterones in the body. Results showed that the shilajit treated group experienced an increase of testosterone levels on days 30 (6.82 percent) 60 (3.09 percent) and 90 (20.45 percent P 0.05) compared to baseline. By contrast there were decreases in testosterone levels in the placebo group (p 0.05). Testosterone levels in the shilajit group were signifi- cantly better those of the placebo group at day 90 (P 0.05). Levels of free testosterone in the shilajit group significantly increased by 19.14 percent (p 0.05) which was significantly higher than the placebo group (P 0.05). In addition FSH levels significantly increased (p 0.004) in the shilajit group which was significantly better than the placebo group on day 90. Also DHEAs increased by 31.35 percent on day 90 in the shilajit group which was significantly higher than baseline or the placebo group (p 0.05). Despite the fact that the two studies summarized above were conducted on oligospermic and healthy male populations using 200 mg and 500 mg shilijit daily the increase in T levels was markedly similar 23.5 percent and 20.45 percent respectively. This similarity suggests the potential for a greater likelihood of efficacy in different populations. Shilajit for Cardiovascular Health The endothelium (inner lining) of blood vessels uses nitric oxide (NO)--a compound produced naturally in the body--to signal the surrounding smooth muscle to relax resulting in vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels) which increases blood flow. This process has a profound effect on your cardiovascular health sexual health physical performance and so much more. This is significant to the discussion of shilajit based upon the following study. To examine its effect in modifying cardiovascular risk a 12-week prospective randomized double blind placebo-controlled trial14 was conducted with 40 type-2 diabetic patients (aged 1875 years) who were treated with 250 mg PrimaVie shilajit twice daily or placebo (n 20 16 men and four women in shilajit group and 14 men and six women in placebo group) and were asked to review for follow-up visits at four weeks eight and 12 weeks of therapy. The results demonstrated quite a few cardiovascular benefits associated with shilajit. One of these was about a 30 percent increase in NO levels (P 0.001). Other benefits included a significant reduction in endothelial dysfunction (poor functioning of the inner lining of blood vessels) as measured by reflection index (RI) (P 0.001) a significant increase in subendocardial viability ratio which is an indicator of heart workload and perfusion (O2 supply vs. demand) (P 0.05) and a significant increase in cardiac output. There were also significant increases in NO glutathione a powerful antioxidant (P 0.05) and a significant decrease in high sensitivity C-reactive protein a marker for inflammation (P 0.001). Furthermore compared to placebo treatment with shilajit showed a significant Reduction in levels of total cholesterol (P 0.001) Reduction in levels of LDL-cholesterol (P 0.01) Reduction in levels of triglycerides (P 0.01) Reduction in levels of VLDL-cholesterol (P 0.01) Reduction in levels of glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (P 0.001) Increase in levels of HDL-C levels (P 0.01). Once again treatment with PrimaVie shilajit was well tolerated and there were no serious adverse events recorded in the study. Shilajit for Energy and Physical Activity Forty-eight healthy volunteers including recreational athletes and sports persons participated in a randomized placebo controlled double blind cross-over clinical trial15 to examine the effect of a placebo or 250 mg PrimaVie shilajit twice daily on improving endurance capacity. The results showed that there was about a nine to 13 percent increase in exercise time in the shilajit groups (P 0.0028) while there were no significant changes in exercise time in the placebo group. This study also measured metabolic equivalents (METs). METs VITAMIN RETAILER 43 APRIL 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE are a unit used to estimate the amount of oxygen used by the body during physical activity. The harder the body works during the activity the more oxygen is consumed and the higher the MET level. In the study there was a significant increase in the METs value after three weeks of shilajit treatment in comparison to placebo treatment at same time points. Researchers concluded that the increase in the METs explains the increase in the exercise time resulting from supplementation with shilajit. No adverse reactions were reported with the PrimaVie shilajit. In another study 16 six normal human volunteers received 200 mg of PrimaVie shilajit and then engaged in aerobic exercise. The subjects continued taking shilajit for 15 days at which point they again engaged in aerobic exercise. The purpose was to determine if shilajit could improve biochemical indicators of energy production. The results showed a significant improvement in energy from supplementation with shilajit. Specifically levels of ATP (the body s energy currency ) increased about 14 percent. Likewise the level of fitness also increased about 15 percent--which was impressive since the subjects in the study were not sports trained individuals. Another interesting change was that shilajit normalized the coenzyme Q10 levels in whole blood and reduced the uric acid levels demonstrating efficacy as energy booster. Blood samples and skeletal muscle biopsies were taken at baseline eight weeks of supplementation and additional four weeks of supplementation with added exercise. RealTime PCR analysis of the biopsy samples showed that shilajit up-regulated genes related to collagen COL1A1 COL1A2 COL5A2 COL6A3 COL14A1 Fibrillin (FBN1) tenacin (TNXB) decorin (DCN) myoferlin (MYOF) elastin (ELN) and fibronectin (FN1) by seven to 80 times without exercise but 20-1 300 times when combined with exercise. This means that shilajit was able to up-regulate collagen and other ECM genes significantly and synergistically when combined with exercise. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the non-cellular component present within all tissues and organs and provides not only essential physical scaffolding for the cellular constituents but also initiates crucial biochemical and biomechanical cues that are required for tissue formation differentiation and repair. that PrimaVie provided antioxidant protection against peroxyl radical hydroxyl radical superoxide anion singlet oxygen and peroxynitrite. Shilajit for Up-regulation of Genes Coding for Collagen and Other Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM) Proteins In the dietary supplement industry discussions about collagen typically take place within the context of its role in healthy skin as well as joint health. But as a connective tissue protein collagen also plays a vital role in the maintenance and repair of other tissues including muscle tissue. Shilajit s influence on this particular role was investigated in an open-label longitudinal study17 including 16 overweight and obese (BMI 30.0 to 34.9) Americans aged 21 70 who consumed 250 mg of PrimaVie shilajit twice daily for eight weeks followed by an additional four-week supplementation period combined with exercise. (Continued on page 55) APRIL 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM VITAMIN RETAILER 45 HEALTHANDNUTRITION By Cheryl Myers C holine is an important nutrient that has lived in a certain kind of limbo since its discovery in 1862. I have often described it as a cousin to the B vitamins and it does have many similarities. Choline was recognized as an essential nutrient by the Institutes of Medicine (IOM) almost 20 years ago but had to wait until 2016 to have a recommended daily intake (RDI) established which was recently set at a minimum of 550 mg daily. But what does choline do Researchers have outlined three major areas where choline plays an important function in the body structural integrity and the function of cell membranes a resource for methyl groups and the creation of trimethylglycine (TMG)--an important factor in mood and energy and lastly as a key raw material for the brain to make a crucial neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Since every organ in the body needs healthy cells and every activity of the body requires 46 VITAMIN RETAILER energy and the brain won t function without acetylcholine it is clear that choline is a necessary element in almost every physiological process. The Choline Catastrophe One of the best sources of choline is the egg. Unfortunately mainstream health practitioners and flawed research on dietary cholesterol put eggs on the no-eat list for decades. This has contributed to the vast choline deficiency we see in America today in which fully 90 percent of Americans are deficient. Another major contributor to the choline catastrophe is the widespread use of anticholinergic drugs. This class of drugs includes the very popular diphenhydramine (used for allergies and insomnia) as well as 50-plus other over-the-counter and prescription medications used for mental health pain relief stomach acidity urinary incontinence blood pressure and more. Many of these products are available without a prescription. These drugs deplete the body of choline and dramatically increase the risk for Alzheimer s disease. In an analysis of 1.56 million elderly patients with dementia from 2005 to 2009 it was found that 23.3 percent of them were using drugs with significant anticholinergic activity. Anticholinergic drugs deplete choline and this reduces the body s ability to make acetylcholine required for brain function especially memory and learning. Many people are shocked to learn that taking an anticholinergic drug daily for One year increased risk of Alzheimer s by 19 percent One to three years increased risk of Alzheimer s by 23 percent Three to seven years increased risk of Alzheimer s by 54 percent Another published study found that taking these drugs reduced functional WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 ability in older adults (like taking a bath and dressing themselves) by 30 percent and these patients were 35 percent more likely to have problems with complex tasks like managing their own medications. Ongoing use of these drugs day after day month after month can cause frightening changes to brain health. Our brains need choline postmenopausal women with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) those with less than 50 percent of the adequate intake for choline had a significant increase in the progression of the disease and fibrosis. Choline and Menopause Interestingly we need more choline as we age and women especially so. Because of reduced estrogen levels women become less able to convert phosphatidylcholine to choline. Estrogen levels drive the production of choline systemically as well. Pregnancy and Children There is good work demonstrating the importance of healthy levels of choline on pregnancy and child development. Pregnant women require even higher levels of choline. In an animal model it was found that supplementation with a combination of DHA and choline resulted in a much higher level of neurons (brain and nervous system cells) in the offspring. In a study on children ages 1 to 5 years old in a rural lowincome country there was a significant correlation between choline deficiency and stunted growth again demonstrating the important role choline plays in growth and development. Choline is also extremely important for breast milk development and successful breast feeding. In a Ukrainian study of pregnant women who had chosen to continue to drink alcohol it was found that choline supplementation offered some protective benefits to the fetus especially in the area of learning and memory. Improving Choline Status Adding good sources of choline to your diet might include egg yolks beef liver cauliflower peanuts and almonds. Supplementing with choline might also be a good idea especially if you are taking any drugs with anticholinergic activity. A good daily dose is between 400 and 450 mg per day in divided doses. If you don t know if your drug is anticholinergic ask your pharmacist. Another good resource for a list of anticholinergic drugs was developed by the Indiana University Center for Aging Research and is available at www.agingbraincare.org uploads products acb_scale__legal_size.pdf. Choline is often blended with other B vitamins in supplements which makes sense given how they work together in the body. B vitamins are best in their bioactive (methylated) form. That way the body doesn t have to do the work to convert them to their active form. If you are pregnant or nursing choline is very important but as with all nutrient supplementation it is important to discuss use with your health care provider. VR Heart Health Many studies have shown that choline is important for healthy cardiac function. In one study eight weeks of choline supplementation was shown to have cardio-protective effects in hypertension (high blood pressure). It was able to decrease heart rate increase ejection fraction (a measure of heart strength) decrease blood pressure and reduce cardiac hypertrophy (enlarged heart). The authors speculate most of the benefits are due to choline s antiinflammatory effects and its activity with methylation. Because of choline s ability to metabolize homocysteine it can reduce a significant contributor to atherosclerosis. AGS A Little Anticholinergic Burden Can Be Disabling. VITAMIN RETAILER 47 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray A Look at the Endocannabinoid System Beyond Cannabis B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND he human body and mind is a beautifully complex system that relies on the interrelationship of various systems working in harmony and balance. While the workings of many of the body s systems have been understood for quite some time it was not until 1988 that a discovery was made that uncovered a 600-million-year-old system that is now regarded as the most important physiological system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. This system the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) was given the name because endo means within the body and cannabinoid highlights the role the cannabis plant played in the discovery. It is now known that the ECS is critical to regulating the proper function of a wide range of body processes including appetite pain inflammation and mood. While the discovery was due to the cannabis plant this system has little to do with cannabis and more to do with com- T pounds that our body makes as well as factors in food and medicinal plants. Purpose of the ECS The ECS serves as a master conductor sending chemical messages and triggering biological actions throughout the body which are critical to health and well-being. The outcome of this delicate balancing act is to create homeostasis that internal drive within every cell and our entire system to maintain balance and promote health within its internal environment even when faced with external changes. The endocannabinoid system regulates Appetite digestion hunger Cellular energy Emotions Memory Metabolism Mood Motivation and reward Motor control Immune function Inflammation Pain Pleasure and reward Reproduction and fertility Sleep Stress response Temperature regulation The Components of the Endocannabinoid System The ECS is known presently to include Receptor cites on cells particularly nerve and immune cells called CB1 and CB2. Compounds known as endocannabinoids produced in the body from dietary fats like anandamide that bind to cannabinoid receptors on cell surfaces. The enzymes that impact the manufacture and metabolism of the endocannabinoids. Receptors on cell surfaces are similar to locks on a door. When the right key in the form of a chemical molecule or agonist bind to the cellular WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 48 VITAMIN RETAILER receptor it relays a specific message to the cell that creates a cascading effect in biochemical processes to produce its effect. Most hormones work in this manner. For example when insulin binds to its receptor on a cell it causes that cell to ultimately allow blood sugar (glucose) to enter the cell. There are two primary cell cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. These receptors are found throughout the body. However certain areas concentrate one or the other receptors. For example CB1 receptors are abundant in the brain while CB2 receptors are more often found on immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract and in the peripheral nervous system. The widespread distribution of cannabinoid receptors shows just how important the ECS is to overall bodily function and health. based compounds known to effectively activate CB1 and CB2 receptor sites. Marketers of products providing CBD highlight that this non-psychoactive cannabinoid supports the ECS and hype it as a virtual cure all. However there are several important considerations for consumers to consider before buying these products. Legal matters aside does CBD oil produce benefit and if so at what dosage A lack of endocannabinoid activity is thought to be present in many debilitating ailments such as fibromyalgia migraine multiple sclerosis seizure disorders chronic fatigue IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and more. To answer the first part of the question yes there is some evidence that CBD-only products can produce some benefits especially in rare forms of epilepsy. But here is the thing--the results were not that impressive in clinical trials even with dosages for some of the applications being very high. It is hard to imagine lower potency CBD oil products supplying a daily dosage in the range of 5 to 25 mg of CBD would be able to show an effect when dosages in the range of 400 to 1 200 mg per day failed in double-blind placebo-controlled trials. For example in the treatment of anxiety several studies found that dosages of CBD of 400 to 600 mg was actually less effective than a placebo. The closest thing to a positive study with a CBD-only product is a study done in subjects with insomnia. A dosage of 160 mg per day was shown to be more effective than a placebo in sleep duration and dream recall. Lower dosages of 40 to 80 mg per day showed no benefit over the placebo on sleep duration or the time required to go to sleep. One of the reasons why animal and in-vitro (test tube) studies show great effects with CBD and the human studies do not may be poor absorption of CBD when taken orally. Studies have shown the relative bioavailability of oral CBD is very low i.e. about 6 percent. Nutritional Support of the ECS A more rational approach to enhancing the ECS involves are more comprehensive strategy. For example critical to the proper functioning of the ECS is having a diet rich in the right type of fats. In particular the monounsaturated fats (particularly olive oil) and the long chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish increase brain and body levels of endocannabinoids as well as sensitize and enhance endocannabinoid receptor binding. Data indicates that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids is particularly harmful to the ECS. Unfortunately low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet and in body tissues are quite common in North America. Interestingly both EPA and DHA are also converted to compounds that recently have also shown affinity to CB1 and CB2 receptors. To boost long-chain omega-3 fatty acid levels taking a high-quality fish oil at a sufficient level to provide 1 000 mg of EPA DHA daily is recommended. In regard to boosting mono-unsaturated fat intake that is quite easy through dietary choices. In particular focus on olive oil as it is particularly effective in increasing the effect of endocannabinoids binding to receptors. Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome A lack of endocannabinoid activity is thought to be present in many debilitating ailments such as fibromyalgia migraine multiple sclerosis seizure disorders chronic fatigue IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and more. The medical term for this condition has been termed clinical endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome. While CEDS can be the result of poor diet lack of exercise drug abuse environmental toxins or genetic factors most often it is associated with a reduced ability or inability to adapt to chronic stress. Prolonged exposure to stress depletes endocannabinoid tone and this in turn has an adverse impact on a plethora of physiological processes. How to Nourish and Support Endocannabinoid System While much of the focus on supporting the ECS has been on cannabis compounds there is a key point that must be realized. The ECS exists and functions independent of cannabis. The discovery of the impact of diet lifestyle and various other plant sources of nonpsychoactive cannabinoids is only in the very early stages. However what is known is that steps can be taken to 1. Support the body s natural production of endocannabinoids 2. Utilize natural products to modulate the breakdown of endocannabinoids like anandamide to retain and prolong their effectiveness in the body. 3. Utilize non-cannabis-derived plantAPRIL 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Natural Products to Modulate the ECS Supporting the ECS is possible by using a number of plant extracts that exert novel effects impacting the ECS on multiple levels. Clove oil Echinacea purpurea zanthoxylum ginger peony and magnolia are extremely rich in pharmacological activity beyond the ECS but what researchers are excited about is how these additional beneficial actions are supported by the ECS and vice versa. Clove oil (concentrated for caryophyllene)--the pain relieving aspects of clove oil have been well utilized over the years by mothers soothVITAMIN RETAILER 49 NATURALMEDICINE ing the irritated gums of teething infants. Clove oil contains several analgesic ingredients but the one most researched for its effects on the ECS is caryophyllene. This compound is also found in many other herbs and spices. It is able to bind with great affinity to CB2 receptors and that is thought to be one of its primary mechanisms in its ability to reduce pain. Echinacea purpurea--alkylamides from echinacea species bind to CB2 with great affinity and also to assist CB2 in modulating the immune system. They also prolong the effects of anandamide. Clinical studies with an alkamide-rich extract have shown positive effects in relieving stress and anxiety. Zanthoxylum or Sichuan pepper-- contains alkylamides that display very strong affinity to CB1 and CB2. These compounds also influence what are known as transient receptor potential channels that are involved in the electrical control of cells and work closely with the ECS. The two systems are overlap and are intricately interwoven in helping cells communicate with one another. Peony--contains paeoniflorin which exerts a number of benefits in close harmony with endocannabinoid influence on cellular function including influencing transient receptor potential channels that are involved in the electrical control of cells and feelings of pain. Ginger--exerts of multitude of health benefits particularly related to pain inflammation and gastrointestinal effects some of which are mediated by the ECS. Ginger s volatile components also influence transient receptor potential channels. Magnolia--contains magnolol which is a very potent CB1 and CB2 receptor agonist. What this means is that it able to bind to both types of CB receptors. Magnolia extracts exert significant effects in promoting a relaxed mental state useful in reducing anxiety. much greater. The power of clinically proven natural products whether it is curcumin or saffron extract or any other compound can be greatly enhanced by dietary and supplemental strategies designed to help the ECS exert its influence on promoting homeostasis that internal drive within every cell that leads to healing and ideal function. It is an exciting time as the research is pointing to new directions in impacting health through enhancing the ECS. Hopefully you are motivated to do all that you can to support the ECS through diet lifestyle and supplemental measures. VR Michael T. The coconut which takes 11 to 12 months to mature is a drupe which is a fleshy fruit encased in a hard shell. Once a coconut is cracked open one would find coconut meat which is high in protein and fat content as well as coconut water which is high in minerals and vitamins. Further coconut milk is actually made by grating the meat soaking it in hot water and squeezing it--extracting a dense white liquid that is high in protein and fat. Today coconut products are exploding onto the market and are being utilized for cooking and baking face and body care digestive health etc. In addition studies have shown that parts of the coconut may benefit a number of the body s systems including oral cardiovascular and gastrointestinal (GI) health. A study that was presented in 2012 at the Society for General Microbiology s Autumn Conference at the University of Warwick (U.K.) a team from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes in a process similar to digestion. The oils were tested against strains of Streptococcus bacteria which are common inhabitants of the mouth. The researchers found that enzyme-modified coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria including Streptococcus mutans--an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. Our data suggests that products of human digestion show antimicrobial activity. This could have implications for how bacteria colonize the cells lining the digestive tract and for overall gut health explained Lead Researcher Dr. Damien Brady. APRIL 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Back Talk THIS MONTH Called The Natural Pharmacist Ross Pelton RPh PhD CCN was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Pharmacists in the United States by American Druggist magazine for educational work in natural medicine. Currently he is Texas-based Essential Formulas director of science and research and was recently chosen to present his poster abstract A Glutathione Producing Strain of Probiotic Bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 at the Probiotic Congress USA held in San Diego CA in October. Here he discusses the poster abstract and concerns about supplements and prescription drug interactions. WITH JANET POVEROMO min B6 which can also increase serotonin levels. St. John s wort is an herb that gets metabolized in a liver detoxification pathway that is also used by many prescription drugs. Hence there are more than 200 potential major drug interactions with St. John s wort. In general I advise caution. People should check with a qualified health care practitioner before mixing nutritional supplements with prescription drugs. Question What should retailers keep in mind when choosing probiotics for their stores and when speaking with customers about them Answer Two main topics are diversity and balance. People with a healthier microbiome have a wider diversity of types of bacteria in their GI (gastrointestinal) tract. In terms of commercial probiotic products multistrain probiotics will provide a greater range of benefits than single strain products. Balance refers to the relative number of bacteria present. There is a mistaken belief that higher and higher doses (CFUs) are better. I hear many people boast that their probiotic has 50 billion or 100 billion bacteria per dose. High doses can throw things out of balance. Too much of a good thing can have negative consequences. Even if it is a beneficial strain if taken in extremely high doses it can create an immune system alarm reaction. It is better to take products that contain lower doses with multiple strains. We are also learning that probiotic bacteria are important because of what they produce. Their metabolism produces what we refer to as postbiotic metabolites. Some probiotics are produced in a fermentation process that allows the probiotic bacteria to product these bioactive postbiotic metabolites. Thus when these probiotics are encapsulated they contain probiotic bacteria plus the all-important postbiotic metabolites. One other factor that is very important is the topic of prebiotics. Prebiotics refer to the indigestible carbohydrates that are the primary food for your probiotic bacteria. In addition to taking probiotics it is also critically important that people learn to feed their probiotics well. High-fiber multi-colored vegetables are the best type of foods to feed your probiotic bacteria and maintain a healthy microbiome. WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM APRIL 2017 Question You recently presented your poster abstract A Glutathione Producing Strain of Probiotic Bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 at the Probiotic Congress USA held in San Diego CA. What is the significance of this strain Ross Pelton R.Ph. Ph.D. CCN Scientific Director Essential Formulas Incorporated Emails ross naturalpharmacist.net rpelton essentialformulas.com What concerns do you have regarding mixing supplements with prescription drugs Answer Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 (referred to as ME-3) is a remarkable strain of probiotic bacteria that has been found to synthesize glutathione. Glutathione is made in every cell of the body and I refer to it as the body s greatest AID to good health. The A stands for antioxidant. Glutathione is the most prevalent and most important antioxidant in the body. The I stands for immune system. Glutathione is required to produce white blood cells which are an important part of our immune system. The D stands for detoxification. Glutathione is a key regulator of detoxification throughout the body. Generally glutathione is not effective when taken orally because it gets destroyed before it gets absorbed. In a human clinical trial individuals taking ME-3 experienced a 49 percent increase in the ratio of active or reduced glutathione to oxidized or used up glutathione. The ability to increase glutathione levels daily by taking products containing Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 represents a huge breakthrough in health and medicine. Question Answer Most supplements are safe with most meds. However there are numerous areas of concern. For example people taking a blood thinner medication like warfarin need to be cautious about taking supplements that also have a blood thinning effect such as omega-3 fish oils vitamin E vitamin K and Ginkgo biloba. Coenzyme Q10 is very effective at lowering high blood pressure so people taking medications for hypertension need to be cautious if they begin taking CoQ10. People taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) antidepressants need to use caution if when using supplements such as 5-HTP and vita56 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to www.vitaminretailer.com nowfoods for info about this advertiser Go to www.vitaminretailer.com bluebonnet for info about this advertiser
