Two months of preparing and eating meals in the basement. Cooking on a camp stove that has a seemingly endless thirst for gas. Even a few days living at Brian s mom s house. Home renovations are never easy. They knocked out a wall to enlarge their kitchen hung new cabinets added new countertops and a bigger island as well as new hardwood floors and upstairs new carpet. Quite an undertaking. But they look pretty content sitting at their kitchen table less than 48 hours since the finishing touches were finally applied. Hard to imagine that just a few weeks ago the first floor of their Anderson home was a mess of bare studs and wood dust. The only reminder is the mostly empty living room which awaits the return of furniture still stored in the garage. It s officially done and now we re putting everything back Jenny says. It only took two months but it seemed a lot longer. But even in the worst of it I really didn t want to move. Too many things had to line up to make that work. Before undertaking the renovation on the cedar contemporary they ve owned for nine years they talked about moving. Brian hoped to find a bigger house and they checked out a few listings all of them in Anderson. Since we moved here we ve never thought of leaving Anderson Jenny says. Brian agrees We love it. Though Jenny was raised in Hyde Park her grandparents lived in Anderson so she got to know the area through visits. After getting married they bought a home in Terrace Park but when the kids were very young they started looking for a bigger place which they found in Anderson where Jenny says they could get more house for the money. Fast forward nearly a decade They won t consider leaving. I didn t even want to leave the Mercer [elementary school] district Jenny says. I wanted to keep them there because they re so happy. Happy kids happy parents. Brian who owns Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club located just outside Anderson near Lunken Airport also likes the convenience. I m eight minutes from work he says. I can come home for lunch and let the dog out. Jenny is a graphic designer at a downtown marketing agency and offers no complaints about her own commute. They both mention the convenience of shopping and proximity to the school and swim club. They both love the walking biking trails that network the township. But they keep coming back to the kids and to the strong sense of community they feel. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids Jenny says. They go to the same school and belong to the same swim club. So you have a built-in network of neighbors and friends here in Turpin Hills. Turpin what Isn t this Anderson They explain that to outsiders they say they live in Anderson but the township is made up of a lot of small communities. Andersonians tell other Andersonians that they live in Summit or Sherwood or Watch Hill or Dry Run or a handful of other neighborhood designations known it seems only to them. THE BEST IN FINE HOMES ... you can drive the main roads and still feel like you re surrounded by trees in a landscape flush with farms and orchards. It s easy to forget that Anderson isn t a neighborhood like Mt. Washington or Mt. Lookout. It s a tick over 31 square miles in size with more than 40 000 residents. It includes six elementary schools and two pubic high schools as well as a Catholic school system. When many of us think of Anderson we picture the buzzing hive of commerce along Beechmont Avenue -- block after block of busy stores and restaurants -- surrounded by a smattering of well-maintained middle-class subdivisions. And that image isn t necessarily wrong it s just not complete. It doesn t include the handsome estates of Watch Hill. Or the sumptuous new palaces being built along the Ohio River. Those are in Anderson too. Or Coney Island Amusement Park and Sunlite Pool. Yep. Anderson. Belterra Park Gaming and Riverbend Music Center are also in Anderson. When I began my research I thought I knew what Anderson is all about but clearly I had more digging to do. So I started at the beginning sort of and visited the Anderson History Room a wonderful spot loaded with vintage photos and artifacts documenting the area s progress through time. Before the visit my sense of the township s history was admittedly a bit vague. From what I could glean online the township was founded in 1793 by pioneers who had begun moving in a few years earlier. Then things were kind of slow for around say 150 years until -- Cowabunga -- America discovered the appeal of suburban living. Next thing the township knew something like 40 000 people had moved in. Docents Don and Sharon Perry members of the Anderson Historical Society filled in some of the blanks. A former president of the society Don -- a soft-spoken scholarly gent -- can trace his Anderson heritage back to the 1790s. He and Sharon explained that the township was part of the Virginia Military District -- land given to soldiers who had fought in the Revolutionary War. Fertile soil and proximity to the Ohio and Little Miami rivers made the area quite attractive to settlers. We re only a few years younger than Cincinnati Don says. That s a long history. Much of that history focuses on farming. Generations of the early families stayed in the area making their living through the land with tiny clusters of commerce springing up to serve them with names like Fruit Hill Sweetwine and Forestville. The township s hilly topography and remoteness from Cincinnati didn t invite much further development. There really was nothing in the area for a long time Don says. He points to a big surveyor s map circa 1920 hanging on a wall in the history room. It shows that Anderson was nearly all farmland and small farms at that -- 50 acres here 30 acres there. The room offers plenty of photos too and even ones from the 1940s suggest a small-town world seemingly far away from the bustle of an industrial city. Don remembers when in the 1950s things began to change in the township. Slowly the little farms were sold and developed into subdivisions. Bridges and roads had been built to provide easier access to and from Cincinnati and as the postwar population started spreading in all directions Anderson began to seem much closer than in earlier days. But Don emphasizes that the expansion was less immediate than in other parts of Greater Cincinnati. It didn t explode overnight he says. It was steady growth. This gradual pace helped the township control the growth and maintain plenty of green space even as it accommodated a thousand new residents every year for decades. Today despite those many residents you can drive the main roads and still feel like you re surrounded by trees in a landscape flush with farms and orchards. The rural landscape evolved into a mecca for young families seeking suburban bliss. Lots of house for the buck. Safe streets. Great schools. Plenty of other young families nearby to share the journey of raising kids. For those reasons and some others Nathan and Tricia Beiersdorfer sold their little place in Madisonville five years ago and bought a bigger one in Anderson -- or well Dry Run actually to township residents. When you created the home yourself customizing all the details leaving it is even harder. Jeff Holtmeier built and has lived in his Indian Hill estate since 1998. From selecting the three-acre wooded lot to constructing the house his boys Alex and Zack would grow up in he went the extra mile to create a special place. It was a labor of love he says one that has given the family a wealth of happy memories over the past two decades. When you stand in the tree-lined backyard it is hard believe that the home is only about five minutes away from the Kenwood Towne Centre. Without any road noise or the din of neighboring homes the surroundings feel more akin to a rural getaway than a suburban street. The key element is the privacy yet you are still close to everything Jeff explains as we stand in the enclosed octagonal solarium on the first floor a place that has been his quiet reading nook for years. If there is a sanctuary in the house this is it. The screened-in porch overlooks the beautiful yard and offers views of the local deer birds and foxes. Jeff works a lot from home managing technology companies around the world so it s no wonder he d rather not leave this office. The high ceiling and handsome decor provide the perfect atmosphere for business. However the Holtmeier gentlemen are no strangers to entertaining. All three love to cook and the large kitchen offers plenty of room to do exactly that. Jeff has upgraded the granite countertops sinks and cabinets. A long counter island offers plenty of space for food preparation and presentation. The lighting fixtures provide enough clarity to see the meals being cooked but are also comfortable for the family and guests to enjoy their food in an inviting atmosphere. The house has been the destination for many family holidays sometimes hosting fifty or more people and with the built-in bar that begins in the kitchen and opens into the family room it s easy to see how a large party could all gather and mingle. There are a plethora of small seating areas perfect for conversation. The foyer offers a comfortable seating area around a fireplace on one side and an impressive dining room on the other side. Alex and Zack are in their mid-20s now both successful financiers living out of town and Jeff is ready to fly the coop as well. He s building another dream home in the Cincinnati area scaled down to fit his needs. He says the thing he will miss most about the Indian Hill estate is the level of privacy that s so hard to achieve without sacrificing a sense of community or proximity to a commercial district and schools. If these walls could talk they could spend many a night telling M heartfelt stories of this family s enjoyment of this special home. We had a bunch of people who got it what we were trying to do. It just all came together says Walsh. Walsh and his wife Jane became the second owners of their 1969-built mid-century styled house just four years ago. It was designed by Cincinnati architect Richard Savage and featured a ship-like vaulted wooden ceiling up to 16 ft. tall large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass and custom architectural light fixtures. My intent was I didn t want to screw the place up says Walsh. We wanted to enlist somebody to help us enhance what was there. Enter Cincinnati based drawing dept in 2014. Rob Busch founding partner for the firm said that as in many midcentury homes the kitchen functioned as back of house support space rather than as a social component of the home. Additionally the kitchen suffered from dated finishes obsolete appliances and inadequate lighting. The design ethos of the kitchen renovation while not strictly preservationist honors and enhances the existing architecture he adds. By removing the partial-height wall that originally separated the kitchen the entirety of the space is revealed the roof vault can now be seen as a complete form and the two sculptural light features are brought into relationship with each other each centered over a dining area. The new cabinetry and appliances are thoroughly of the 21st century yet quietly integrate into the mid-20th century home. The project took about eight months to complete. Walsh says while the kitchen is over 400 sq. ft. and perhaps larger than needed since the couple s four sons have left the nest it performs perfectly when family gathers for holidays. My wife has six siblings so we are generally the holiday space especially for Thanksgiving. And since I do a lot of the cooking with the way the design is now I m between the sink and the cooktop while everyone else is on the other side of the island out of the workspace. In other words he says everyone can be comfortable and enjoy the gathering. Particularly appealing is the 18 ft. long X 4 ft. wide white quartz countertop in the middle of the room says Walsh. And the windows. Since the kitchen is unusually located in the front of the house and because the cabinetry that once divided the room has been removed he can better enjoy the overall environment. Evonne Morales who co-designed the kitchen with Busch said that her company s design goals first and foremost had to support and expand the new owner s vision for the house. They found their first home in the Summit Estates neighborhood back when the township says Skip was a lot of apple orchards and farms. He grew up in Bond Hill Jan in Silverton and when they started looking for their first home they didn t even consider Anderson. We didn t know anything about it he says. The real estate agent said we should take a look. They did. And liked it a lot. After 20 years in their first home they built a bigger one in Eagle s Knoll. With their two sons now grown and gone they decided a few years ago to downsize. We thought about moving to Clermont County but we really didn t want to leave the township Skip says. So they built a new smaller home in Eagle s Watch. It s been the best move we ever made he says. It s an incredible neighborhood and we have incredible neighbors. The homeowners association really takes care of everything. Asked if they feel out of place in a place much better known as a place for young families Skip says Not at all adding that there s a much wider range of ages than people might expect. There s a variety he says. And people out here are like family. We know all our neighbors. We ll go out for a 30-minute walk and it ll take us an hour and a half because we re always stopping and talking. A lot of our neighbors came from other places. One is a guy from Hyde Park. He didn t want any part of Anderson when they got here and now he doesn t want to be anywhere else. But it s the Anderson Fire Department that holds a special place in Skip s heart and he says he d be remiss not to mention them. They re just outstanding. Their professionalism and training is exceptional. He recalls some years ago when he and Jan were painting the interior of their home. Jan took a serious fall off a ladder. The fire department responded with amazing speed Skip says. When Jan fell not only was she injured but paint went all over everything. The floor the staircase the furniture. When Skip returned that night from the hospital he was stunned to see that the firefighters had cleaned up all the paint. They even cleaned my brushes he says the shock of such care still fresh in his voice. I ve worked with a lot of first responders in my time and they are absolutely second to none. One of their sons still lives in Anderson along with three grandchildren. The other son lives close by. And though Skip and Jan are among the baby boomers who allegedly are moving on from the township he ll tell you he s not going anywhere. At one time Anderson seemed like it was more of a transient neighborhood but now people stay he says. A lot of my sons childhood friends have stayed. Once you live here you feel like you re part of the community. It s a big place but it doesn t feel like it. It feels more like a small town. Sometimes I tell Jan where we are it s like Mayberry. It s up there half-hidden by some old sweaters that should have gone to Goodwill years ago. Each spring when it comes time to thin out the closet the old box calls out and inevitably the job goes undone. It s not a big box a little larger than a shoebox but the contents -- the contents are like my personal siren song like some benign addiction that beckons and badgers. It s impossible to resist and ultimately it always wins. I give in. Sometimes it costs me a few minutes at most an hour or two. But there have been times I must admit when the box has held me captive for far too long. On a dreary Saturday afternoon some years ago the house was empty and I began the job with resolve only to fall victim to that battered box once again. Purpose gave way to reverie. Hours passed without notice. It was near dusk when the door opened and my daughter and wife stood side by side witnesses to the chaos. Coats and sweaters were stacked on the bed in some semblance of order but there I was -- a man of 60-some years -- seated on the floor surrounded by baseball cards. My wife only smiled. After more than 30 years she understands. Dad what are you doing my daughter said. Taking a trip down memory lane There was nothing I could say. I just sat there a 59 Stan Musial in one hand and a 57 Roy Campanella in the other. Strewn around me was an All-Star array Mickey Mantle Willie Mays Henry Aaron and Roberto Clemente and that was just the start. Another pile included the true treasures the first cards my dad had given me a 55 Ted Williams and a 54 Jackie Robinson. I remember what he said at the time. You take good care of these boy real good care. This man Ted Williams is the greatest hitter of all time. This one Dad said tapping his finger against the Robinson card he changed baseball changed it for good. Baseball became our bond. He pitched to me when I was barely old enough to hold a bat. He made a ballfield in our backyard and never complained that we killed the grass. As I grew he taught me how to pitch. He helped me paint a red square on the wall of the smokehouse. Inside that square we painted a smaller square. Never throw the ball inside that small square he said. Throw to points along the outside and keep it low. He bought balls and bats and gloves when money was tight and groceries were not plentiful but between Mom and Dad they always -- always-- had a nickel or two for baseball cards. They asked the question that always came with a new pack of cards Did ya get anybody good There came a spring day when my friends and I were playing catch out back and we noticed my dad loading things into his car. I asked him what he was doing. He squeezed my shoulder and said he was going to Florida. On a fishing trip he said. I m going with your uncle Robert. The fishing trip lasted for years. I missed him for sure and he left Mom and me with some hard times. But he also left me with something else. He left me with baseball and in many ways it became my guardian. When my buddies were trying beer and smoking cigarettes in the woods I was either playing or thinking about baseball. I avoided pool halls and fast cars and at night I would shuffle through the baseball cards hoping and dreaming of another world another life. I gravitated toward anyone and everyone who knew and loved the game and for reasons I ll never know they seemed to find me. My aunt married a man named Bob Schuster. He d played in the Yankee organization and had pictures to prove it. Bob picked up where Dad left off. When I was in high school -- all of 17 years old -- and believed I was thoroughly and completely in love I turned to Bob for advice. There are three things in your life right now he said girls books and sports. You got time for two. You gotta make your choices. In the years that followed there were scouts Bob Kring from the Pirates Sam Schively from the Tigers and Roy Sievers with the Phillies. For a while they nourished my dream but eventually the scouts went away and the dream went with them. Still I had the game. In one form or another Dad s fishing trip went on for years and when he did return there was a large gulf between us. Still I had his gift. I had the game and for that I was and remain most thankful. When word came that he d died I was in Florida covering a spring training game. I was a baseball writer. I had offices across the country in every press box in every Major League ballpark in the country. The dream had come true -- with revisions of course chief among them a much smaller paycheck. Still my life revolved around the game. My wife and I were married and crowded in a honeymoon during the All-Star break in 1984 and for all these years she s known about the cardboard box in the closet and how each spring I dig it out and rummage through its contents.
