Every 1 raised will mean Fareshare can redistribute enough food for four meals for people in need. MILLIoN SAVER When it comes to reducing fuel consumption in transport refrigeration the british food logistics specialist martin brower Uk comes up with impressive results. thanks to the use of electric driven FrigOblOCk refrigeration units the company has saved almost 1.9 million litres of gasoil in just 6 years. TRANSDEK DoUbLE DECK SoLUTIoN SLAShES CoSTS AND REDUCES EMISSIoNS FoR NISA RETAIL transdek Uk has supplied a customised package of double deck trailers and loading systems for Nisa retail that will save over 400 000 a year and slash CO2 emissions by more than 730 000 kg per annum on a contract that is operated by Dhl supply Chain. Nisa is a unique member owned organisation serving independent food retailers across the whole of the Uk and ireland. the group represents over 1 300 registered shareholders operating over 3 000 stores. Nisa s network dispatches over 2.7 million cases per week across the entirety of the Uk republic of ireland scottish islands isle of man isle of Wight and Channel islands. Nisa operate one large ambient picking warehouse in scunthorpe along with three temperature controlled picking depots at livingston stoke and harlow. these sites are supported by seven outbase locations. From its scunthorpe ambient distribution centre Nisa has started operating 10 of transdek s innovative Wedge double deck trailers which have enabled the group to remove 1 300 trunks from its transport network and cut nearly 820 000 km from vehicle routes annually. this equates to saving approximately 273 000 litres of diesel a year. lee Vickers head of logistics at Nisa retail explained We distribute substantial ambient volumes into the south of the country from scunthorpe and the introduction of transdek trailers has allowed us to reduce the primary transport profile by circa 25 trunks per week by using the additional floor space and weight capacity more effectively. 20 08 2015 16 14 Cold Store Rentals shortlisted for South Coast Business Award Freezer and refrigeration specialist firm Cold Store Rentals has been shortlisted for the hampshire Chamber of Commerce Small business of the Year Award at the South Coast business Awards taking place on 6th July 2017. CCa remains a major financial benefit for members and will increasingly be so when major changes in levy and levy rebate happen from april 2019. We will be running seminars over the next twelve months to better inform the food logistics industry about these but now is the time to join us if you are not already members. the agm also gives the temperature controlled food logistics industry to think ahead to what is currently a very changing landscape for the sector. TIME To FACE FACTS in recent times the temperature controlled food logistics sector has seen a number of cold stores closing. this is generally a consequence of the age of the facilities some of which were built in the 1960 s or earlier but other factors such as high rents and changes in supply chain structures customer requirements and new environmental regulations surrounding refrigeration also play their part. this has already resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of pallet spaces available. Cold store pallet space is reducing Cold store stock is aging and becoming inefficient landlords are demanding higher rents Customers are demanding lower rates Cold store pallet space is reducing Cold store stock is aging and becoming inefficient landlords are demanding higher rents Customers are demanding lower rates some companies are lucky enough to have an additional income stream which can be reinvested into their cold store facilities giving them the ability to either update their current stock or completely replace inefficient plants with brand new state-of-the-art facilities and we are also seeing international investors coming into the Uk market. but rents are getting higher and are proving to be a barrier to investing in new facilities. and what about the majority of our cold store operators those who are existing hand-tomouth being squeezed from both sides many companies with these old buildings are finding it impossible to meet the cost base demanded by their customers who continue to push for cost-down strategies and are coping with outdated facilities increasingly inefficient thermal properties and no spare income to invest in energy-saving initiatives. Furthermore with ambient space commanding better if not the same rates as cold storage it is no surprise that some operators are moving away from frozen and chilled. We are beginning to see a number of these cold stores closing their doors for good and if the trend continues there will come a time in the not too distant future when the demand for pallet spaces will outstrip supply. at which point the well-known laws of supply and demand will kick in and long-suffering food logisticians in the temperature controlled logistics service supply sector will at last be able to command more reasonable but higher prices for their service and perhaps once again start to obtain a reasonable return on investment. but why should we wait until we reach this point space for over 50 000 pallets has disappeared in the london area alone over the last ten years and many more have gone elsewhere in the country more recently redeveloped for retail housing and other more profitable land use. isn t it time for food manufacturers retailers foodservice operators importers and indeed all users of the invaluable range of storage and added value services provided by the sector to truly invest in your food supply chain with your service supplier partners before more become casualties and further capacity disappears for ever i wish you a profitable summer Chris sturman As this article goes to Press FSDF members should have been gathering to hold the 2017 Annual General Meeting and Lunch this year at the home of Manchester United old Trafford. It was to have been an opportunity for representatives of the wide range of FSDF member companies to come together take stock and review last year s progress look at this year s activities so far and prepare strategies for the future. Regrettably it had to be cancelled as a result of increased security activity in the aftermath of the brutal mindless slaughter of children and young people in Manchester. This sudden and violent event has brought into sharper focus the risks and effect of terrorist activity and our hearts go out to the victims and their families some of who are connected to FSDF members in the North west region. 2016 was a year of change and uncertainty. Financial margins in the public cold storage and wider logistics service supply sector continued to be very slim with members reporting a 1 2% return and the political and business landscape very much dominated by the European Union referendum. Despite this i was pleased to report that member companies are welcoming the wider range of member services FsDF provides. FsDF membership remains stable with a small but increasing diversification into ambient food associate membership has been roughly in line with the experience of previous years and at present membership is 63 full 62 associate and 13 transport members. FsDF Climate Change agreement (CCa) members continues to grow and at the end of the first four years of the current scheme there are currently 130 member companies with 373 locations in the stand-alone temperature controlled food logistics facilities sector. these are generating close to 6m Climate Change levy rebate in return for energy reduction and efficiency investment. target period 2 finished at December 2016 and the interim result shows a better than performance average across whole FsDF group although the older more inefficient and energy intensive Food storage & Distribution Federation www.fsdf.org.uk t 0118 988 4468 4 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E www. tcs andd. com JUNE 2017 TCS&DAWARDS REWARDING EXCELLENCE IN THE PERISHABLE SUPPLY CHAIN WELCOME TO THE 2017 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED STORAGE & DISTRIBUTION (TCS&D) AWARDS. We have grown quickly over the years and now have close to 100 employees i remain closely involved in the day to day running of the business as i feel that it is important to set the cultural ethos of the business. Question Could you tell the readers of tCs&D what services Fresh logistics offer please Answer at Fresh logistics we view the business as a one-stop shop. the more obscure the logistics requirement the more exciting it is for us and we have built up substantial experience over the years to know how to provide solutions to a vast array of 6 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E logistical problems. Within the company we have now diversified into four different sections Fresh Logistics is the largest section and concentrates mainly on the food industry. through this side of the business we offer such things as same-day couriers throughout the Uk and Europe overnight deliveries pallet drops frozen and chilled parcel services worldwide storage bespoke projects marketing events and consultancy. Fresh Pharma was our first sister company dedicated to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry and was set up thanks to a collaboration with the Nhs to distribute human tissue specimens. We have since become registered and approved with some of the largest pharmaceutical wholesalers and distributors in the Uk. Fresh Fridge hire offers vehicle rental to restaurants schools weddings outdoor events and small local businesses on short term and generally emergency hire due to fridge or vehicle breakdowns. EMLC is our hQ in Derby from which we offer innovative and creative offices training and meeting rooms to the logistics industry. Question Can you tell us what temperature controlled vehicles Fresh logistics operates Answer Our fleet ranges from a small van up to artics. We have such a diverse range of clients that we need to be able to cater for so our vehicles all contain moveable bulkheads and can be set anywhere between -25 C through to 25 C. Our 7.5t s differ from heavy freighters that can take 3500kg through to dual-compartment vehicles with side doors and tail-lifts for frozen and chilled multidrop deliveries. We also have a range of vans from 1 4 pallets some of which are twin evaporator to allow for full temperature control of mixed loads. Question What has been the most important technical development in your temperature controlled bodies and refrigeration systems in recent years and how has it impacted on your operations within Fresh logistics www. tcs andd. com JUNE 2017 EXClUsiVE VIEw FRoM Answer We were one of the first companies in the Uk to trial twin evaporator vans however back then the technology was large and chunky which meant to get the payload our insulation wasn t as thick as it should be and still the vehicle could only carry 450 - 500kg. With more recent developments we now have 9 twin evaporator vans on fleet that have the highest specification thermo king refrigeration units installed enhanced insulation and can carry 850kg weight. these vehicles fly through the temperature mapping tests we perform and will comfortably take loads at down to -25 C and even during the winter months the units can heat to 20 C. We have also added run-locks to the vans so that our fridge units will remain running whilst the keys and driver are away from the vehicle ideal for the work we do in the pharmaceutical industry. Obviously to be able to provide this type of vehicle comes at a cost but to stay ahead of the market i see it as a necessary investment. Question are you using telematics across your fleet if so what advantages do you see this gives your clients Answer another major investment for us is our transport management system. all of our drivers are equipped with handheld PDa s that pings back to our system and allows us to provide our customers with tracking accurate Eta s what number delivery they are on whilst performing multi-drop arrival and departure times plus we can provide electronic POD within seconds of delivery. We can also provide temperature readouts throughout transit giving full vehicle and temperature traceability. Question Customer needs are constantly changing so what are you finding is now the biggest request from your customers Answer Compliance with the nature of the products carried we have seen a major shift in concentration from retailers and governing bodies to be able to provide end to end traceability and reassurances that the goods will be taken in the most effective manner. if you think about food safety in the Uk and the importance with potential terrorist attacks or the vehicle security when transporting high-cost pharmaceutical loads our customers need full trust that we will transport their products in a compliant safe and secure manner. We are heading towards our 10-year anniversary now and have adapted our training schedule to ensure our drivers are fully trained to brC mhra gDP and iOsh standards plus they are put through further training with such things as Food hygiene level 2 so by the time they come onto the fleet it will have cost the company around 1500 each. this is a necessary requirement to maintain our service ThE SUMMIT Feature sponsored by Enterprise Flex-E-rent levels and ensure our drivers are fully ready to take on our bespoke and intriguing work. Question What environmental measures does Fresh logistics employ to ensure best practice Answer We run a number of schemes aimed at reducing our ecological footprint. With regards to our vehicles we keep close tabs on our miles per gallon monitoring vehicle performance on a weekly basis along with vehicle idling through our transport management system so they are not idling unnecessarily. Our hQ is also a big focus of concentration looking at ways to reduce outputs. Our offices are run by solar power giving clean energy throughout. We also harvest rainwater for our grey water requirements and vehicle washing plus when we moved in there was a 50-year-old oil boiler that used to throw out black smoke so one of the first things we did was to convert this to environmentally friendly lPg. We have internal recycling too including taking cardboard to a local customer for bundling and re-using. Question What type of temperature controlled warehousing does Fresh logistics offer to its customers Answer a vast range of temperatures from frozen through to heated. Due to the nature of our business we need to be flexible and cater for a differing range of services. an example of this was when we were approached by a local brewer who was looking to condition their beer over a period of time whilst maintaining 12 C temperature. We had a specially designed add-on to our chilled unit for this purpose we also had a wine connoisseur who was also looking to store their collection of rare red wines at the same temperature which worked out well. all our storage chambers are temperature mapped every 6 months and are complete with remote monitoring and are fully CCtV covered. Question What number of pallets does your temperature controlled warehousing hold Answer We are currently set up to have 300 pallets of chilled and 300 pallets of frozen but when we say chilled the fridge can be set to anywhere between -5 C up to 15 C. We don t try to compete with the larger more established storage and haulage companies we try to offer solutions for the smaller more hands-on projects that require closer care and attention. Question lastly would you like to share any news about your company that you feel would benefit tCs&D readers Answer We are looking at developing technology for an all-in-one transport management system being designed to be rolled out around the Uk. this will be bespoke to the temperature controlled transport industry and act as a one stop shop from bang sheet to balance sheet. as the first in the industry to pay the living wage we have proved that you can pay your guys well reward hard work and still have a business. Our road to Class mechanism was designed for people who have passed their standard car driving licences pre-1996. rules of old meant they had the ability to drive 7.5t s without any additional driving exams however with the new laws coming in they must now apply for a digi-card and take the drivers CPC course which can be costly. the road to Class scheme aims to recruit and develop these guys giving them the opportunity to earn money working on the vans to then pay for their digi-card and drivers CPC course allowing them to drive 7.5t s legally once again. We will also support driver if they want to develop skills to either Class ii and Class 1 vehicles too. i have also (not that i don t have enough to do already) recently been invited to assist the hard-working royal National lifeboat institution developing their supply chain. i am also going to talk about our collaboration with the Nhs at the upcoming tCs&D conference. We have been honoured in previous years by winning the tCs&D refrigerated Courier of the year award twice in 2013 and 2014 so we are going to do everything in our power to once again lift the title. www.freshlogistics.co.uk To find out more about the difference we can make to your business call 0800 328 9001 or visit www.flexerent.co.uk JUNE 20 1 7 w w w.t c s a n d d . c o m TCS& D MAGAZI NE 7 EXClUsiVE SAFE-door Industries Ltd Yearsley Logistics invests in health and Safety A Thermaster high speed freezer door installed at the Yearsley Logistics distribution centre at Belle Eau Park Yearsley Logistics have recently installed more Thermaster high speed freezer doors from SAFE-door Industries Ltd at their Belle Eau Park cold store enhancing health and safety due to the lack of ice and snow on the cold store walls and floors. Traditional frozen storage to loading dock solutions utilise solid panel sliding doors which are generally open for the duration of the loading or unloading process typically up to 60 minutes. whilst the door is open the only separation between the frozen storage chamber and the outside world is a set of dock seals which may at best offer a little resistance to the exfiltration air. however in most instances there is clear daylight either above the truck or at the side of the dock leveller perfect positions for warm 8 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E moist air to sweep in and for cold dense drier air to fall out. given that these gaps will remain as flow paths until the inner door is closed after the process has completed it is easy to imagine the volume of cold air lost from the cold store and the volume of warm moist air that has been allowed to enter. it is this warm moist air entering the cold store which freezes to form ice and snow on walls and floors creating a very real safety hazard for slips and falls to potentially happen. and as well as health and safety there is also the store temperature variance to think about the influx of warm moist air creates additional load on refrigeration plant to regulate the store temperature. to overcome this the thermaster from saFE-door industries takes the place of the solid panel doors and allows the loading or unloading process to be undertaken in the same time but with the open-door period reduced typically by a factor of 10 meaning much less warm moist air entering the store. this means less ice and snow build up and lower loads on the refrigeration plant. www. tcs andd. com JUNE 2017 SAFE-door Industries Ltd EXClUsiVE ensures that there is no possibility of a closing door striking an object. manufactured from heavy duty galvanised steel and polyester powdercoated as standard the thermaster is built to last and engineered to minimise maintenance needs. yearsley logistics have installed more than 30 thermaster doors from saFE-door industries across a number of their sites throughout the Uk and the improvements to health and safety fridge plant load and defrost cycles have been welcomed by all. AboUT SAFE-DooR INDUSTRIES LTD saFE-door industries is a Uk-based design and manufacture house for special purpose thermal separation and sound reduction doors. they offer a broad range of innovative door solutions to separate and contain ambient chilled and frozen environments. saFE-door industries doors can be found in distribution centres cold storage facilities food processing factories and pharmaceutical laboratories both in the Uk and in an increasing number of overseas countries. the thermaster door is a twin fabric high speed rolling door which operates at speeds of up to 2 metres per second and provides a highly effective seal to all four sides of the opening. the air between the fabrics is conditioned to ensure that an effective thermal barrier is maintained between the two curtains and therefore acts as the insulation. in addition to this a trace heating system is integrated into the door frame which ensures that the door structure is thermally broken and eliminates any possibility of ice build-up in the door legs or head. For additional safety the thermaster is fitted as standard with 2.5 metre high self-monitoring light guards to both sides of the opening which For more information visit Yearsley.co.uk and SAFE-door.co.uk Visit SAFE-door Industries Ltd at TCS&D 2017 on stand D2 13-14 Sept RICOH Arena Coventry Meet our family of market leading high speed Thermal Solutions Thermaspeed Thermachill Thermaster Ambient Ambient Chill Chill Freezer Freezer Find out more about our innovative range of Thermal Solutions at www.SAFE-door.co.uk sales SAFE-door.co.uk Tel 016977 42153 TCS& D MAGAZI NE 9 separating environments through innovation JUNE 20 1 7 w w w.t c s a n d d . c o m SToRAGE & DISTRIbUTIoN NEwS A complete service for retailers and food service customers As one of the leading integrated temperature controlled storage and distribution businesses in the UK Reed boardall prides itself on responding to its customers needs and evolving its services to reflect changes in the food industry. Furthermore the knock-on consumers want things quicker and faster than ever before a behaviour that resonates through the food supply chain. as such food businesses need to capitalise on the technology that is available in the supply chain. by adopting microwave technology manufacturers are not fixed to using forecasts and particularly when frozen materials are sourced the length of the time taken on the up-tempering process is hugely reduced affording businesses the capability to provide those just in time requirements. this new up-tempering process is decreased from what is normally days and hours to minutes. being able to work to these tighter time scales means orders are confirmed with customers and food wastage is significantly minimised. Consignment stock is another facility within the supply chain which can also be more fully utilised. this service allows importers to store large amounts of stock which can be drawn on by numerous customers who extract purely what they require meaning they save on cold storage costs as this cost stays with the importer until the stock is transferred. www.rickbestwick.com effect of increased security checks at border controls brought about by brexit will also mean additional costs for many food businesses. but he pointed out that although the food industry is typified by tight margins it is still profitable and businesses are still able to flourish. the answer kevin says involves businesses adopting a different mind-set and using the efficiency resources they already have at their fingertips. TRAILERS boDIES REFRIGERATIoN EQUIPMENT Quick-Fire livery change maximises exposure for major M llerlight campaign M ller has rapidly re-vamped the livery of 96 of its UK trailer fleet to promote a major new M llerlight campaign using Traxx a versatile quick-change frame and banner system that makes commercial vehicles a viable advertising tool. the aluminium traxx frames were originally fitted to the 13.6 metre gray & adams trailers in 2015 by vehicle graphics specialist rgVa. the system allows high definition printed banners to be applied to the side of trailers in a matter of minutes. this provides a cost-effective way to maximise each trailer s promotional potential without needing to apply traditional vinyl livery across the entire vehicle. the truck-side adverts have been specifically designed to complement a cross-channel campaign on tV and print to launch the dairy company s reformulated m llerlight greek style yogurt. karine loutfi brand manager at m ller yogurt & Desserts said as the Uk s leading yogurt manufacturer introducing m llerlight greek style with 0% added sugar was a hugely exciting and significant milestone for us. 2017 is about bringing excitement innovation and game-changing new products into the market and by using the traxx system the m ller fleet became a flexible and cost-effective marketing channel in its own right. the trailers give us an additional 192 movable billboards which will be seen by tens of thousands of people across the country every day. the trailers also feature new rear door vinyl graphics applied by rgVa s expert team and printed on high-quality 3m scotchcal iJ40-10 series film with 8030g laminate helping to ensure the new campaign is visible from behind the vehicle. the application process for all 96 trailers took three weeks to complete and was carried out at the m ller depot in East kilbride scotland. With the fleet in constant operation the process required careful co-ordination between the two companies to ensure the work was completed smoothly efficiently and with minimal disruption. archie Cameron Fleet Engineering manager for m ller at East kilbride said the guys at rgVa made it a painless process. though the vinyl for the rear doors required a temperature controlled environment to be fitted correctly the banners slide on in all weathers. that meant we could complete the job without impacting on the day-to-day operation of the JUNE 20 1 7 w w w.t c s a n d d . c o m fleet which was obviously a very important consideration for me. rgVa is an official distributor and installer of traxx and has been working with the system since its introduction to the market in 2006. the patented high-tension aluminium frame allows ripple free high-definition printed banners to be applied to the side of commercial vehicles in as little as 15 minutes. The deal represents new business for Fraikin with the Newport-based meat wholesaler changing vehicle supplier to facilitate a major expansion of its commercial fleet. the new deal includes the supply of two 12-tonne DaF lFs and two 15-tonne mercedes-benz ategos each a new addition to Deliserve s 11-strong mixed fleet. the fifth truck is a smaller 7.5-tonne atego which replaces an older vehicle. Fraikin s customer-focused approach combined with its comprehensive contract hire package which includes FraikinView the company s powerful web portal and mobile app as standard were cited as the key reasons for making the switch. tom Coburn transport manager at Deliserve says the level of support we ve received from Fraikin is fantastic. they know how important it is for a business like ours to have a modern reliable fleet. most of our vehicles are on the road every day so we need them to be fully maintained and operational to maximise productivity. Fraikin has taken responsibility for compliance financing maintenance and replacement of the vehicles on a collection and delivery basis ensuring that the Deliserve fleet stays on the road in the event of any unplanned downtime. the inclusion of Fraikin s powerful online tool FraikinView was instrumental in Deliserve s decision to move fleet supplier. the system provides users with up-to-the-minute progress of breakdowns reports defects online and lists all planned maintenance work which helps to optimise fleet scheduling and management. the system also stores important vehicle documentation to aid fleet compliance. Coburn adds FraikinView is really shaking up the way we manage our fleet it puts so much vital information at our fingertips. simple things like being able to see at a glance which vehicles require maintenance mean we can schedule servicing in advance and plan our workloads accordingly. Each new vehicle has been fitted with solomon Commercials insulated bodywork Dhollandia tail-lift and a Carrier transicold supra refrigeration system ensuring maximum cold chain protection when transporting fresh and frozen products across the south-west of England and Wales. the new arrivals will each cover approximately 50 000 miles per annum and are based out of Deliserve s headquarters in Newport. Established in 1993 Deliserve was formed primarily as a supplier of bacon and cooked meats but has now developed its range to include a wide choice of fresh meats frozen products and dairy items. www.fraikin.co.uk JJ Food Service uses Sentinel systems to improve vehicle safety National wholesalers and independent food specialists JJ Food Service has recently worked with Sentinel Systems to install safety camera and recording devices onto their vehicles. JJ Food service opted to install sentinel s 360-degree cameras linked to an in-cab monitor and recording DVr unit. With these systems drivers are given a complete view of the vehicle s surroundings including the rear and near-side blind spots. sentinel s side scan cameras improve visibility for drivers making them aware of cyclists or pedestrians either side of the vehicle. these particular surrounding areas of a vehicle can be the most common blind spots for cyclists where they are invisible to drivers at all times. sedat kaan hendekli Enfield branch manager at JJ Food service commented the safety of the general public customers and our drivers is vital to our business - even our best drivers can do with help to improve visibility particularly when operating up to 18-ton vehicles. With the new five-channel camera systems from sentinel our drivers can maneuver more precisely and safely. this is particularly important with more cyclists appearing on the roads. We are responding by making our vehicles cycle safe . he continued Our new near side scan cameras help drivers to be fully aware of cyclists and pedestrians in the vehicles blind spot. Early feedback from our team has been incredibly positive. and the benefits don t stop there. the new in-cab camera helps to monitor driver behaviour ensuring that they uphold professional standards at all times. the 360-degree camera system also helps to protect the business against false insurance claims and to pin point the cause of any accidents. We have 40 vehicles fitted so far a mix of 7.5 tons and 18 tons and are so pleased with the results that we have plans to roll it out to our fleet of more than 130 vehicles. We chose sentinel because of their reputation for high quality we invest in market-leading solutions to keep our employees staff and the general public safe at all times. by installing sentinel s safety systems JJ Food service prevents potential accidents caused by drivers manoeuvring which can be particularly challenging in busy areas. 26 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E www. tcs andd. com JUNE 2017 TRAILERS boDIES REFRIGERATIoN EQUIPMENT Marshall Fleet Solutions supplies the first Thermo King SLXi system in UK Through its transport refrigeration division Marshall Fleet Solutions has supplied the first production Thermo King SLxi-300 refrigeration system to be specified by a UK operator. the state of the art refrigeration system has been fitted to one of the latest bizien 13.6m refrigerated trailers in the all-refrigerated trailer hire fleet at Oswestry-based company Cadwallader ltd. the single-compartment trailer is being used by Cadwallader as a demonstration unit for the bizien trailer range for which they are exclusive Uk distributors. Transportation solution businesses Thermo King and FRIGobLoCK of Ingersoll Rand welcomed visitors at the CV Show in birmingham to showcase real transport refrigeration solutions ready for today and tomorrow including hybrid and zeroemission all-electric units. at the CV show we wanted to demonstrate our leadership and discuss how we through our extensive existing and available solutions portfolio can already today help our customers to meet the real-world operational environmental and emissions demands the transport refrigeration market is facing said Donal Cox regional director Uk and ireland at thermo king and FrigOblOCk. thermo king and FrigOblOCk are in a unique position to demonstrate an existing full portfolio of diesel hybrid and zero-emission all-electric solutions to suit all transport refrigeration applications from truck trailer to home delivery vans. this full portfolio of transport refrigeration solutions meets the expectations and answers today s demands in areas of sustainability intelligence and connectivity ultimately improving customer s environmental footprint while simultaneously decreasing their total cost of ownership. the CV show 2017 was the Uk premiere of the new thermo king slXi platform of single- and multi-temperature trailer refrigeration units and the new hybrid Drive trailer concept leveraging FrigOblOCk inverter technology. thermo king also introduced its new all-electric zero-emission b-100 30 refrigeration unit for small trucks and vans enhancing its non-diesel b-series of efficient and environmentally friendly units. the new thermo king slXi platform of singleand multi-temperature trailer refrigeration units delivers up to 20 percent fuel savings and telematics as standard. the units were developed with an expanded focus on the unit s intelligence communication capabilities fuel consumption and temperature management by collaborating with hundreds of customers and dealers to collect operational data from thousands of units operating throughout Europe middle East and africa. sXli range includes tailorable operational parameters to meet customer needs their application and ambient conditions. the customised profile conditions create optimised 28 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E performance and fuel savings of 10 to 20 percent compared with the predecessor. the slXi is the industry s first fully telematicsenabled refrigerated trailer unit delivering full visibility of the unit and load condition with thermo king s new tk bluebox communication device and bluetooth as standard. the tk bluebox collects and stores unit data which can be accessed through a free app on smart phone or bluetooth-enabled device. this provides two-way communication that enables real-time unit management and access to critical data. Users can manage defrost pre-trip set point and additional operating mode settings remotely without a contract or subscription. CV show 2017 was also the Uk premiere of the new hybrid Drive trailer concept that combines the proven expertise and technologies from both thermo king and FrigOblOCk and will become part of the slXi refrigerated trailer platform. the hybrid Drive trailer concept offers additional fuel and operational savings as well as low emission and noise levels enabling transport companies access to inner city areas and restricted zones. the thermo king hybrid Drive allows a refrigerated semi-trailer attached to a tractor with a FrigOblOCk Enviro Drive inverter filter to run electrically. this enables the trailer refrigeration unit to be powered as a hybrid drive by either the electric alternator or through its own independent diesel engine. standard tk bluebox telematics system stores the data and provides ability for two-way communication to ensure that the load is protected at all times and the geo-location feature will automatically switch the power between diesel and truck Enviro Drive as required or necessary. launched only in march 2017 the new nondiesel vehicle-powered refrigeration b-100 30 unit features an added electric heating option within the same compact dimensions and provides top performance to the last mile delivery applications. the new b-100 30 and the entire all-electric b-series units are a perfect fit for customers looking for high performance refrigeration units for their last mile applications such as home deliveries or the transport of pharmaceutical products. having no diesel engine the units gives transporters the flexibility of inner-city low-emission zones operations and contributes to the low total cost of ownership. the b-series range of zero-emission electric units are powered directly from the vehicle battery. they are compatible with vehicles equipped with original air-conditioning system requiring no drive kit or vehicle modification while the thin ceiling mounted evaporator contributes to increased payload space. the new b-100 30 unit adds electric heating option to the current range providing constant electrical cooling and heating capacities. heating capacity is independent from vehicle engine and ambient temperature. europe.thermoking.com www. tcs andd. com JUNE 2017 JUNE 20 1 7 w w w.t c s a n d d . c o m TCS& D MAGAZI NE 29 TRAILERS boDIES REFRIGERATIoN EQUIPMENT Mark Murphy & Partner freshens up its fleet with new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters Our experience over the last 10 years has proved that when it comes to long-term reliability and performance nothing comes close to a mercedesbenz said managing Director mark murphy. We have tried some other vans but they just don t measure up they might be ok for the first year but after that things quickly start to go wrong. sprinters by comparison just keep going. the drivers like them too while the fact that they re widely acknowledged to be the safest vans on the road is another significant plus point. mark murphy & Partner delivers a huge range of fresh produce and supplies some of scotland s most prestigious events including the braemar gathering Edinburgh Festival and royal highland show. its telephone ordering desk is staffed around the clock consignments can be ordered for next-day delivery six days a week while for customers in and around Edinburgh there is also a sunday service. We work the vans hard added transport manager grant Campbell. they leave base very early in the morning and deliver to some pretty remote areas where many of the roads are steep narrow and winding. Our customers demand a reliable delivery service so we just can t afford to have vehicles breaking down. the sprinters have proved themselves to be well up to the job which is why we keep coming back for more. in the unlikely event of a problem mark murphy & Partner knows that like all vans bearing the legendary three-pointed star its sprinters are backed by three-year unlimited mileage warranties. as they are maintained within the official mercedes-benz Dealer Network they also come with mobiloVan cover which includes free emergency roadside assistance. www.markmurphyltd.co.uk Mercedes-benz vans are the pick of the crop for fruit and vegetable wholesaler Mark Murphy & Partner. the company is based in Newbridge near Edinburgh and supplies hospitals schools and universities as well as caf s and fine dining restaurants throughout scotland. mark murphy & Partner recently added three new sprinters to its 14-strong fleet of delivery vehicles. they arrived like the 28 other mercedes-benz vans it has purchased over the last decade via the broxburn branch of Dealer Western Commercial. the operator s first low-emission Euro 6 vans are 314 CDi models with advanced and fuel-efficient 143 hp engines. their long bodies were insulated and lined for temperature-controlled operation and fitted with gah refrigeration units by Coolkit of burnley. Perishable goods with short shelf lives are the first to be affected by any problems in the food supply chain. at the same time demand for fresh food is growing fuelled in part by an increased interest in healthy food alongside a greater demand for high quality premium products. in order to address the issue of waste and the associated costs food suppliers supermarkets and restaurants are increasingly turning to specialist third party logistics providers to maintain product integrity from farm to fork. adopting the latest technology is one way that refrigerated logistics providers can reduce delays in delivery times and the resulting spoilage. refrigerated vehicles should have on-board temperature control equipment which allows couriers to make multi-drop deliveries of frozen chilled and ambient consignments. at Courier Express for example their drivers are able to make multi-drop deliveries on a daily basis anywhere in the Uk often more than 25 consignments of different temperatures per day. Vehicles are fitted with advanced temperature control monitoring equipment which safeguards the integrity of produce by maintaining a constant set temperature. Flexibility is another key requirement. Courier Express works with a number of multi-national food companies whose needs can vary greatly. Danone for example wanted a logistics partner that could deliver fresh dairy products formula milks bottled water and medical nutrition to its customers around the Uk seven days a week. its round-the-clock distribution model sees orders for food products taken until 6pm each day then deliveries made to customers overnight arriving before 9am the following day. the food manufacturer worked with Courier Express to reshape its logistics operations providing both same day foodservice and overnight sample deliveries. Delivering food samples presents its own unique challenges. in the highly competitive chilled and frozen frood market businesses are constantly competing for opportunities and supplying high quality samples to customers during the tendering process is key to securing custom. therefore it is vital that samples arrive within stringent delivery windows and in optimum condition. kepak Uk ltd the market-leading micro-snacking company whose brands include Feasters and rustlers wanted a reliable and efficient refrigerated supply chain that could ensure both frozen and chilled samples were delivered on time from its manufacturing site in lancashire to supermarket distribution centres and store headquarters. as well as delivering on time every time another key consideration was that samples arrived in perfect condition as any damaged samples would be rejected. Courier Express was able to meet all kepak s requirements and now plays a pivotal role in its multi-temperature supply chain delivering products seven days a week. www.refrigeratedtransportuk.com Specialists in design and project management of temperature controlled environments 1Cold Ltd is one of the fastest growing providers of specialist construction services to the food and drink medical and pharmaceutical data and communications electronics and aerospace research and environmental industries.
