It s been 15 years since a restaurateur threatened to break my kneecaps for a middling review of his seafood spot which closed shortly thereafter. And it s been three years since a record company publicist told me he d ruin my magazine career for running a photo of Ariana Grande that wasn t approved by his team. But as a reporter if you know going in that a little verbal harassment may be in the cards why not work with a pro That explains why I ve been playing the recording of my phone call with stand-up legend Richard Lewis to anyone who will listen. As much as I hope readers enjoy the resulting story on Lewis who coheadlines a show on Oct. 7 with Artie Lange at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek it s one of those times when the printed word doesn t do the interview justice. When the extension in my office rang that day the voice on the other end noticing the unfortunate prefix in our company phone number said You have to change the three 6s out of that number or I m going to come over and burn your house down. Otherwise hey good morning. For the next 80 minutes the man who s devoted himself to self-deprecation for 50 years riffed on anything and everything that came into his brilliant angst-filled mind. At one point after a detour about how he met his wife at a record-launch party for Ringo Starr the 70-year-old Lewis quipped I m telling you if this story isn t more than three sentences long I m going to find you. It was like being on the receiving end of a private stand-up performance. Realizing that I d done little more than laugh out loud during the interview Lewis said I feel like you re having a breakdown. You ve avoided asking me anything because you had your legal pad with all your questions and now you ve set it on fire like Rosemary s Baby. You re very intelligent but I think you re hiding something. Someone once told me you re as sick as your secrets. You better think about this when you hang up. Enjoy the issue and the Lewis story. In the last few years several high-profile women and men including Good Morning America Margaret Thompson MD anchor Robin Roberts Breast Surgical Oncologist have been diagnosed with the illness. Her public bravery in post-operative photos added to her popularity. Did you know that Dame Maggie Smith Diahann Carroll and Richard Roundtree (better known as Shaft ) also battled breast cancer The state of the science in breast cancer is promising. However breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 37. We can do more to prevent it and indeed we must do more. For instance mammograms previously done by two-dimensional equipment are now being replaced by 3D equipment called tomosynthesis. With better screening and improved technology we have better diagnostic capabilities. Tomosynthesis has reduced the call-back rate. Meaning we are more accurate in diagnosing a spot that is likely to be cancerous thus eliminating other unnecessary procedures. From a surgical aspect treatments are changing continuously and patients are benefiting from new therapies said Margaret Thompson MD breast surgical oncologist. We ve found that patients who required the removal of all lymph nodes can now be spared this invasive treatment option and only have a few lymph nodes removed. Radiation can now take its place safely and with fewer troublesome side effects. According to Dr. Thompson Every day we understand how important a team approach is in conquering cancer. At Cleveland Clinic Florida our patients typically see a multi-disciplinary team that includes not just a surgeon but also a radiologist pathologist medical oncologist radiation oncologist plastic surgeon and ancillary staff she commented. For our patients who require reconstruction a cohesive team approach is critical too. One of our most noteworthy innovations involves using fat injections during the plastic surgery portion of treatment. Our team removes the excess fatty tissue from the abdomen or thighs and injects it into the breast during reconstruction. Cancer care is complicated and overwhelming but Dr. Thompson comments that Cleveland Clinic Florida helps ameliorate the non-medical issues too. We provide navigators genetic counselors support groups plus massage art and music therapists to help patients undergoing treatment. There s even a boutique to help patients look their best by supplying wigs hats post-mastectomy bras and makeup seminars she said. OCTOBER 2017 OCTOBER 2017 TO OB 29 29 BackStory Keith and Jenna Keltner Lean Back and Enjoy A HUSBAND AND WIFE INVEST IN THE COMMUNITY IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE WITH V S BARBERSHOP BY KEVIN KAMINSKI As V s master barber Anthony Matteo explains the art of straight-razor shaving is all about using a light touch. How light The 200 hours required for practice shaving--on a lathered-up balloon. The idea he says was not to pop it. Did You Know What happens when a husband and wife with corporate backgrounds--he s a marketing and operations specialist who cut his business teeth at the Boca Raton-based headquarters for Office Depot she s an accountant who helped Spirit Airlines during its initial public offering--decide to start a family and take an entrepreneurial leap at the same time If you re Keith and Jenna Keltner you invest in the first V s Barbershop franchise in South Florida--and you officially open your doors in Fort Lauderdale the week that Jenna is due to give birth to their son. It might sound like the makings of a Bravo reality show but nothing about the Keltners game plan was unscripted. The couple already had franchise experience having bought an Orangetheory Fitness in Royal Palm Beach. But with the prospect of a newborn in the mix the work drive from Broward to western Palm Beach County didn t seem so attractive Keith and Jenna sold the Orangetheory in late 2016 and looked for an opportunity closer to home. Though neither Keith nor Jenna knew much about barbershops the Cheers vibe the franchise embraces--it s the place where everyone knows your name--appealed to them. This business is more relational which is in line with our personalities Keith says. The 35th V s franchise (2426 N. Federal Highway) combines handsome d cor (dark woods and brick) with nostalgic touches (like the five Koken barber chairs from the 1950s and framed photographs of sports icons which are for sale) and even adult beverages (local and national beers eventually will be offered). The men s grooming menu is straightforward--haircuts straight-razor shaves facials face massages--but it s the genial five-star service from V s three full-time staffers that has customers returning. For Jenna whose family owned the Yankee Clipper hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach connecting with customers and the community (V s already has donated to Arc Broward) helps to explain why this doesn t feel like work. It s more like a project we re doing together she says. It s so much more fulfilling. 30 OCTOBER 2017 LMGFL.COM LMGFL.COM OCTOBER 2017 31 2 5 3 1 45 TheDish Catered Fit HEADQUARTERS 5150 N. It s a lot of sacrifice. It s a lot of punishment on the body. If you think of only money think you re going to make 1 000 at your debut match-- no. There s no money at this level. [Extreme Championship Wrestling] taught me how to carry myself around veterans. Realizing that people are going to help a guy with a good attitude as opposed to a guy who thinks the wrestling business owes him something. The wrestling business doesn t owe anybody anything. I got picked up by WWE [World Wrestling Entertainment] in 1998. I would love to sit here and tell you that WWE picked me up because of my superb wrestling ability but the reality is that I happened to be at the right place at the right time. I don t want to wrestle anymore. My priorities have changed. I have a wrestling school now. I have 20 kids [enrolled]. Kids that literally depend on me. But the money [Latin American countries are] paying me [to wrestle] I have to go. They weren t paying me that kind of money when I was in my prime. They re forcing me to stay in ring shape. I teach the guys hands-on. I m 44 and I ve been bumping for 20-something years. It takes its toll on your body. There s days I can t get out of bed. But I still enjoy it. I had to know who Harley Race was. I had to know who Lou Thesz was. I loved wrestling so of course I knew [the legends of the sport]. Now if you re not on TV in the last two weeks these kids don t know who the hell you are. But they re paying customers--it s my job to teach them my job to mold them. I expect over 500 people [at matches]. That s my high. That s my blood sweat and tears. Garnish with drops of chili oil and a sprinkle of pepper. A Savory Mix PANTRY STAPLES MAKE A FORT LAUDERDALE SPEAKEASY S LATEST CONCOCTION A WINNER t first it was odd watching Brian Freed pour extra virgin olive oil into the shaker on top of the vodka. Then came the romaine lettuce. Was he making a cocktail or a salad Ahead of Lettuce recently debuted on the fall winter menu at Stache Drinking Den and Coffee Bar the craft cocktail-focused speakeasy in downtown Fort Lauderdale (109 SW Second Ave.). Originally it stole the hearts and stomachs of diners at Freed s latest venture C.W.S. Bar & Kitchen in Lake Worth earning a spot on the permanent menu. We re trying to create some synergy between the two places by having some of the same cocktails says Freed the co-owner. This cocktail was a hit--it s delicious it feels healthy. It s light it s refreshing. We always change our drinks but this one was a winner. Stache s signature cocktails make use of fresh ingredients and a wild imagination. In addition to lettuce and a spoonful of olive oil Ahead of Lettuce calls on vodka (the lounge opts for Hangar One) fresh-squeezed lime juice ( It has to be fresh--no bottle stuff he says) cane syrup and chili oil to garnish. Oh and a dash of seasonings because what salad doesn t have salt and pepper The sweet syrup and the sour juice balance the richness of the olive oil which creates a slightly silky texture. The outcome is a libation that transcends seasons yet stands up to South Florida s hot autumn days. Plus vodka cocktails are an easy sell. Vodka pays the bills as they say he quips. It s not going anywhere. Otherwise an Old Fashioned is our biggest seller. Stache has become a favorite spot for whiskey lovers given its 350 varieties. It even spawned the Fort Lauderdale Whiskey Society a group of more than 500 enthusiasts who come together each month for a tasting. The bar also has its own barrels of bourbon. We wanted to do something different than what downtown Fort Lauderdale knows which is slamming drinks Freed says. Giving people a better spirit a better drink. Something that s balanced. People are beginning to take their cocktails more seriously. -- ALYSSA FISHER A 38 OCTOBER 2017 LMGFL.COM PHOTO BY EVELYN ROBLES You Dream It....We Make It Happen DJ services party rentals LED dance floors LED furniture LED photobooths We provide services for Weddings Bar Bat Mitzvahs Birthdays Corporate Events Sweet Sixteens Quincea eras Anniversaries Holidays Reunions & much more 5702 NW 119th Terrace Coral Springs FL 33076 Cell 914.629.2877 Office 954.594.4725 w w w. Executive chef Christopher Palmer calls on his chefs at the restaurant s two South Florida locations--Fort Lauderdale (721 E. Las Olas Blvd.) and Brickell (690 SW First Court)--for a culinary brainstorming session. Ideas are pitched. Cases are made. The concepts that make the cut advance to the preparation and cooking stage where the chefs come together as one for tweaking and testing. Eventually Palmer signs off on the final versions--but the power ultimately is vested in the people who quickly weigh in on the new menu offerings. When it comes to American Social s recent summer additions the people have spoken. Shared plates such as truffle rib tater tots rancheros meatballs and hickory-smoked chicken wings-- and entrees such as the steak and barley salad and the Drunken Goat (an 8-ounce lamb and beef patty with tomato jam arugula bourbon red onion and red wine goat cheese)--already are drawing raves. For Palmer who grew up in Cleveland before moving to Florida and cutting his kitchen teeth at Caf Boulud in Palm Beach it s the latest chapter in a never-ending quest to heighten the restaurant s comfort pub food focus. Food-wise so much has changed says Palmer who s been with American Social for three years. I took out everything canned and processed. We re a true scratch kitchen. Nothing frozen nothing out of a bag. Everybody works extra hard to make sure everything is all natural. I always tell people that you don t come to American Social to get healthy--but we re not going to pollute your body either. Sometimes the body wants what the body wants. That seems to be the case with the Maine Lobster Benedict which has been blowing up on the brunch menu (Saturday and Sunday 10 30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on Las Olas. Here are some of the reasons why. 40 OCTOBER 2017 LMGFL.COM Sweet dreams The idea for Maine Lobster Benedict came to me when I was lying in bed one night Palmer says. We went away from a full buffet in Lauderdale so we wanted something on the brunch menu that had value--and was sophisticated. Raise a glass Another component with brunch are the deals we have on Mo t & Chandon and house Champagne. The women especially seem to love the dish with unlimited mimosas. What s better than lobster and Champagne On the side We also serve a small spinach feta and baby heirloom salad [with tomato vinaigrette] instead of the traditional home fries. That keeps it light. You re not going to eat our Lobster Benedict and then go home and feel like you need to nap. Seafood special Lobster adds a different element to the dish. You get the sweetness from the lobster meat to go with the tomato hollandaise sauce [and avocado mousse] you get a little bitterness from the spinach and then it all comes together with the fresh English muffin. We make our own English muffins at the Brickell restaurant so we re bringing that baker to Lauderdale so we can make the muffins fresh there as well. LMGFL.COM OCTOBER 2017 41 L Dr. Tracey Stokes Game Changer Breast cancer patients have an alternative when it comes to postmastectomy reconstruction BY ALONA ABBADY MARTINEZ ast December the U.S. Food & Drug Administration changed the conversation when it comes to reconstructive options for women following a mastectomy. That s when the FDA approved marketing of the AeroForm Tissue Expander. The device which is implanted at the time of the mastectomy gradually fills with carbon dioxide using a remote control given to the patient. Unlike the traditional saline tissue expander a process that involves painful weekly injections of 50 cubic centimeters of saline the AeroForm device allows the patient to independently trigger the release of 10 cc of carbon dioxide every three hours up to three times a day. Aside from being painless and extremely convenient it also speeds up the expansion process says Tracey Stokes a Harvardeducated plastic surgeon and a partner with Laura Sudarsky at Esse Plastic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale. Darice Lang 61 a two-time breast cancer survivor who underwent a bilateral mastectomy in March 2016 had the AeroForm expander implanted and called it a game changer. I had the expanders for 19 days Lang says. It did not interfere with my routine and I didn t have to take time to go to the doctor s office and go through all the pain of the [saline] expansion. It s empowering to be in control of that. The device is covered by insurance companies but for patients the psychological component is the most powerful selling point. Patients get to decide when they want to fill and if they are having a bad day they don t have to fill Stokes says. They don t have to go to the doctor every Tuesday at 10 or leave their work or family to get filled. Perhaps the greatest testament to the device is when Stokes herself became a patient. I am BRCA positive she says referring to the gene linked with a higher occurrence of breast cancer. I have more [medical] knowledge than the average person when I had to undergo this surgery in May [AeroForm] is what I opted for. [That s] a powerful statement about the technology. 42 OCTOBER 2017 LMGFL.COM Al Fresco ENJOY FLORIDA OUTDOOR LIVING Let us design build install and service your outdoor kitchen. My mother still knows her daughter and she thanks me every day for helping her navigate her changing world. I thank her for ensuring that some of the challenges we are both facing because of this devastating disease are less daunting because of her advanced preparation. Peace of Mind BY MICHELLE F. SOLOMON In dealing with her mother s dementia the author learns the true value of having your legal affairs in order M y mother was always organized. Everything was in its place. She talked about her last wishes in case of her death. In her safe deposit box she had specific instructions about what she wanted me to do when she died. She already had written her obituary and attached the photo she wanted to accompany it. She had told me many times that if she had a stroke or a debilitating illness she hoped to pass away quickly. That didn t happen. Since October 2013 my mother MabelFaye Solomon has had a progressive decline in her mental and physical health from vascular dementia the second-most common dementia which often coexists with Alzheimer s disease. Vascular dementia is caused by a series of mini-strokes most of which are not outwardly noticeable. What are the signs She had difficulty signing her name and figuring out the process of what was required to pay her bills. My mother had been a teacher for 30 years so that was unusual behavior. In 2012 as fate would have it she requested that I accompany her to a lawyer. She wanted to make sure she had everything in order just in case. For a few hundred dollars (costs vary per attorney) legal documents were drawn up. It wasn t just a will she had done that earlier. These were essential documents that would allow me to make important financial and medical decisions on Mom s behalf. Little did we both know that this would be crucial when I had to become her voice when she wasn t able to decide for herself if she should have her hip and leg operated on after she fell. Or how her money would be handled to pay for her care when she needed to be placed in assisted living--and a host of other important financial and medical decisions. The key was that Mom still had the full mental ability and therefore the legal capacity to make the decision that I would be the trusted source to make decisions on her behalf if she became unable to do so. ( 44 OCTOBER 2017 LMGFL.COM LIFESTYLE ADVICE SPECIAL MARKETING SECTION MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEO WITH THIS GUIDE On every social medium video is quickly displacing text posts and photos as the primary way of engaging current and prospective clients. As moving pictures gain popularity so does their professionalism. Shaky loosely framed poorly lit videos sufficed in the early days when capturing an event or recording a vlog was a novelty. Today organizations are recording in high definition using lighting and sound equipment that puts their videos on par with TV programming. Researchers have combed through the statistics on billions of videos to determine the optimal ways to produce and distribute clips on each social media platform. What had been amateur art has become a professional science. And if your organization hopes to generate business from its videos it must upgrade its efforts. Here s what you need to know Think first about your audience. Millennials prefer Instagram Baby Boomers gravitate toward Facebook. The younger generation wants to interact the content while the older age group is more passive. Twitter is for everyone but mostly for breaking news. Edit video to different lengths. Adjust the script to the platform. Studies show that just under 30 seconds is best the length for Instagram 45 seconds for Twitter 60 for Facebook and two minutes for YouTube. You ll have to shorten introductions cut segments and eliminate graphics to squeeze 120 seconds down to 30. Put the script onscreen. Firms that study how video consumption say that 85 percent of Facebook video is watched with the sound off and that 39 percent of viewers are more likely to finish videos that have subtitles. Text that captures the story including quotes will boost your audience. Consider where and when the video will be viewed. A study by business video producer Vidyard found that 86 percent of business videos are viewed on a desktop only 14 percent are watched on smaller devices such as tablets and smartphones. Prime time for those videos is Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET. Put your content on a calendar. Just as organizations schedule Facebook and Twitter text-and-photo updates video should be programmed. One reason is to capture the biggest audience the second is more practical It takes time sometimes weeks -- to script shoot and edit one video. Go live but only under the right conditions. What s the best advice you could give to people looking to buy sell a home For sellers timing is everything and going on the market at the right price is key. I m going to try a new tack and hopefully not ramble he says later in the one-sided conversation. How am I doing so far It couldn t be going any better. When one of the most original and influential stand-ups of any era unleashes a self-deprecating stream of consciousness the last thing you want to do is interrupt him. As it turns out comedy s Man in Black is rambling for a reason. He s wrapped up a ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm with best friend and show creator Larry David he s 23 years sober he s happily married to wife Joyce and at age 70 he s back on stage after taking time off last year to recover from various ailments including a fractured wrist ( I did more shows at CedarsSinai the past year than [on stage] he says.) Lewis co-headlines this month with Artie Lange at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek with 300 000 hours of material in his head. I m going to be so raw I might get so provocative in that casino that the people wearing Bermuda shorts won t have to go in the sun he says. Their thighs and calves will be red by the time I m off the stage. If his Q&A with Lifestyle (which honestly was way more A than Q) is any indication that may be an understatement. (Visit for the full interview.) We ve finished shooting the ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I ve seen some of the [episodes] I think it s the best season. Larry took a long five-year nap unfortunately. But he doesn t go into a new season unless he thinks he has a 10-story arc. The show is adlib but there are some expositional points otherwise there s no story and it would be like those cakes that crumble whatever they re called. I used to know. That s the thing [about being] 70. My brain now ... you might ask a question about politics and I ll tell you that things aren t going well for President Eisenhower. If only Eisenhower would stop tweeting I m starting to go bald in the back of my head. So we re doing some post-production stuff for Curb and I say to Larry Why do you always have the camera on the back of my head you bastard. ... Larry says The balder you get the more episodes I m [doing]. I haven t spoken to him in a week. I m not sure whether I m rooting for more hair to be in the drain or not. I think I d rather be semibald and do a 10th season of Curb. Then after that I ll be offered a show where I play Uncle Mikey the guy who [lives] with a chimp. I used to use notes on stage I haven t in a decade. ... I had this sheet that was Scotch-taped together. When I opened it up it would be about 6 feet long. It looked like a Jewish Christopher Columbus scroll. ... When I was younger I carried this sheet everywhere I went. If I lost it I would have had to run away with the circus and be shot out of a cannon. The first Jewish clown to be shot out of a cannon. I d probably go about a footand-a-half in the air. And then I d apologize and offer to pay for everyone s tickets. There are so many different platforms [for comics to pursue today] that I almost want to take a nap thinking about all the work I would have to do. The road was narrower in [the 1970s]. It was like Get The Tonight Show or you re done. So I d drive to Catch a Rising Star in New York try to meet as many consensually loving actresses as I could--who were all unfortunately waitressing--and work on my act. I wasn t thinking about protein and probiotics. I was thinking about The Tonight Show and condoms. Don t think there weren t comedy groupies. They weren t walking around with clown shoes and red noses on--although I know one comic who was into that. I had an unfortunate attraction to some unfortunate personalities [during his dating days] and I would parade this Fellini-esque group one after another in front of my therapist. ... Out of the corner of my eye I would envision my therapist giving me a thumb s up. There was never a thumbs-up. ... This went on for 15 years until I met Joyce [his wife of 12 years]--a name that we both despise but there s nothing I can do with it. I like Richard it s a cool name. But Joyce If I kiss my wife after saying her name I feel like I m kissing my aunt at a Passover meal in Brooklyn in 1957. By the way I have a fascination with clocks. I have a collection of them. ... Why was I even thinking about the clocks Maybe it s because I ve been on the phone with you for 3 days. Oh the therapist. So my wife when we dated I had to find some reason to go to the therapist. My therapist loved my wife and knew she was the right one for me. But she just couldn t take me anymore. The therapist leaned in about an inch away from my face and said This is as good as it gets. And she said it in this scary horror voice like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. Her head spun around on its axis and she spit this green guck all over my black suit. Listen I m going to need some oxygen soon. We ve been talking for 80 minutes. I know because I m looking at one of my 1 000 clocks.
