TCS&D AwARDS 2018 ENTRY FoRM Now oPEN AND IT S FREE To ENTER ENTER ToDAY AT 2 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E Next generation logistics food park planned for Thames Enterprise Park development iSec has unveiled its vision for the next generation of logistics at Thames Enterprise Park in what is north west Europe s largest single regeneration project. thames Enterprise Park site is located on the site of the former Coryton oil refinery on the River thames in Essex. the site was purchased by a joint venture including greenergy the uk s largest fuel supplier and is now being developed by isec part of the Marcol group in partnership with greenergy. together isec and greenergy plan to develop a 415-acre 4 million sq. ft. superhub on the former oil refinery site to include a Food hub Energy hub sustainable industries hub and an innovation hub - creating up to 5 000 new jobs for the region. Considerable progress has already been made to prepare the site for development including planning consent granted for the remediation of the first phase of around 100 acres. an outline planning application is due to be submitted to thurrock Council by the end of 2017 with a consent anticipated in summer 2018. this will allow the first development plots to be ready by early 2019. the multi-modal development will benefit from direct access to the River thames and a railfreight interchange as well as first class road links to london which is only 33 miles away. isec the industrial development arm of Marcol is one of the country s largest owner of cold stores and sees a clear strategy of locating clusters of food manufacturers and distributors in one dedicated Food hub close to london. Mike Forster Development Director at isec explains the scale of the development will allow food distributors and manufacturers to locate in clusters enabling more efficient supply chains directly into london and more widely. this gives potential for cost and energy reduction in a sector that is sometimes resource inefficient and in need of increased automation. the new Food hub will give operators the chance to start from scratch and bring forward the next generation of logistics for the food industry allowing them to incorporate future automation and technologies such as industry 4.0 and bring chilled storage distribution and manufacturing together on one site. the scheme will also include an Energy hub targeting a variety of waste-to-energy uses. this could ultimately complement the energy requirements of operators in the Food Park with the potential for a private wire network. the final element of thames Enterprise Park is an innovation hub providing skills training and R&D facilities in a dedicated state-of-the art facility with a mix of office amenity and conferencing space aimed at enhancing training and job opportunities in the thames gateway. Mike adds Each of the four elements of the scheme has the potential to support and sustain each other with energy generated by the Energy Park being utilised by the Food hub waste food providing feedstock for the Energy hub and waste-derived fuels from the Energy Park being utilised by greenergy at the adjacent thames Oilport. this provides a rare opportunity to deliver a sustainable integrated and highly-skilled employment site in the south East that will help drive forward the economic success of the thurrock and thames gateway. www. tcs andd. com NOVE MBE R DE CEM BER 2017 TEMPERATURE CoNTRoLLED SToRAGE & DISTRIbUTIoN NEWs Magnavale appoints new CEO Leading temperature controlled food operation Magnavale has appointed new Chief Executive Colin Taylor to manage the organisation s ambitious growth plans. Colin has more than 30 years experience in the food industry with major manufacturers such as Bernard Matthews Moy Park Pinguin and Vion. his most recent post was as Chief Operating Officer of Middle East food and logistics business Mezzan. Magnavale has now reached a critical stage in its development where there is an opportunity to grow and take advantage of the synergies between the separate elements with a more corporate and structured approach whilst retaining the customer-centred approach of a family run business. Colin said it is both an exciting and crucial time to be taking to the helm at Magnavale. the company has made many positive changes in recent years and it will be fitting to bring these all together under one roof and maximise their full potential as one entity and create a further competitive advantage in the cold storage business. stuart hancock co-founder and shareholder of Magnavale added selfmotivated and results driven Colin has proven management and leadership capabilities enabling him to deliver meaningful and measurable bottom line results. We believe that Colin s can do attitude makes him the ideal choice to lead Magnavale forward and we look forward to working with him when he joins us in October. since founding Magnavale in 2014 original shareholders stuart hancock and stephen lawrence have brought together several small largely family run businesses and seen the group grow to include sites in Chesterfield liverpool scunthorpe and Warrington (all now operating under the company s flagship brand Rick Bestwick) as well as entering into a five-year logistics partnership with DFDs. Both teams are to be commended in delivering a highly successful event which saw 180 delegates across the whole industry convene at Belton Woods to hear from experts in the field including the hsE and lincolnshire Fire and Rescue who gave a no holds barred insight into the all too real dangers of an ammonia leak and what the possible consequences could be to the management of a business should this type of event occur on their premises. a very sobering conference with a clear message which dispelled some previous myths. With the success of this event FsDF and BFFF are already planning another joint event around the recently published guide for Working at height on Mobile Refrigeration on which the two Federations have been working for some time now. the interim guide has been blessed by the health and safety Executive and is planned for publication with full endorsement in the late spring early summer 2018 and we look forward to delivering another compelling event for all our members at that point. a couple of weeks later another reality check hit the terrorist attack at Manchester arena two days before the FsDF agM and annual lunch was due to be held at Old trafford. the increase in the threat level the following day by teresa May meant that all venues in Manchester were closed and our event rescheduled until later in the year. as a gesture of goodwill MuFC donated a signed shirt which we auctioned later in the year at the tCs&D awards and raised 1100 thanks to the generosity of bidders and the winning bid from gray & adams (pictured). Proceeds were donated to the We love Manchester Emergency Fund. well it has been a busy and successful Federation year again especially with brexit but as we approach Christmas and the peak of our business activities it is an ideal opportunity to reflect on the successes of 2017. in January we announced the winner of the second FsDF Future leader award. Cavan Mckenna from XPO logistics was the successful candidate and went on to accompany me to the iaRW WFlO Convention in California usa. alongside similar winners from the competitions in australia south africa and united states Cavan delivered a presentation to be proud of to an audience of global players across the world of temperature controlled food logistics. February saw our annual Business Management Conference held at XPO logistics training Centre in Northampton. Presentations from FsDF associate members Chalcroft Zetes luxonic and Carbon Management services gave delegates insight into their products and services which could help them operate more efficiently while Jacobs examined the latest performance of the FsDF Climate Change agreement at the end of target Period 2 four years into the current 10-year timescale. this event also examined the price fixing cartel by truck manufacturers and Backhouse Jones transport industry solicitors explained how FsDF members could join with other fleet operators to pursue a class action compensation claim. this is ongoing and could enable operators to claim up to 6000 per vehicle as we moved into spring the deadline for entries for our health & safety awards loomed large and we were delighted to have a significant pile of submissions to critically examine by the end of March. Multimodal was the next event on the horizon and we spend 3 days at the NEC together with associate members Eurotunnel and arena group who were joined by Montracon and Britannia Bureau delivering shipper Briefings within the FsDF Pavilion. FsDF has been working hard over the last four years in collaboration with the health and safety Executive and laboratories to develop new as the days warmed up we were hoping for good weather for the FsDF annual golf Day. We tend to hold this event at a different quality golf course each year and this year we rolled up at the Forest of arden hotel and Country Club on a beautiful sunny day with 11 teams competing for the silverware We are very grateful to our sponsors who support us every year and provide the fabulous prizes notably uniCarriers Reed Boardall linde luxonic and 1Cold and congratulations to the worthy winners. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2018 watch this space for details. throughout the early summer i travelled around the country to understand the key concerns of FsDF members at a regional and national level. starting in Northern ireland with a particularly robust discussion around Brexit and their concerns for the border and trade with the Republic of ireland it became clear that there was a consistent message from all regions and that was the need for clarity and certainty about border controls and Eu citizens currently living and working in the uk. alongside other uk trade bodies and professional institutes we have pressed government to raise these issues with the uk and Eu negotiating teams to ensure that they understand the effect of their decisions on the uk food supply chain. With autumn in the air it was time for our industry showcase event. at a new central venue in Coventry the Ricoh arena the temperature Controlled storage & Distribution Exhibition drew buyers from across the temperature controlled supply chain. FsDF hosted a wellattended seminar programme where our Brexit concerns were once again raised and a current update explored. Nick hay focused on the state of the temperature controlled food logistics industry and provided some visions for the future and tim Ward from transport for london explained what was happening on the urban logistics front in the capital and what that might mean for operators both in london and major cities in the rest of the uk. FsDF members Chalcroft Construction and Fresh logistics also delivered highly informative presentations. this event also incorporated the tCs&D gala Dinner and awards ceremony where excellence and innovation were recognised and trophies awarded to the winners of 20 different categories including the very well-deserved life time achievement award to harry yearsley. My colleagues on the judging panel and i were delighted to see so many high-quality submissions which made our job the more challenging. My thanks go to my fellow judges and congratulations to all our 2017 winners and to our friends Richard Rosemary and Martyn Cogan of sherwin Publications ltd. in October we returned to Old trafford where we enjoyed the hospitality of Manchester united FC. a tour of the ground drinks reception and gourmet lunch were followed by the presentation of the Future leader award to Cavan Mckenna and health & safety awards to Marshall Fleet solutions Brakes Reading DC and ian harvey from Partner logistics. gary Pallister regaled the audience with tales of antics on and off the pitch and we raised 665 for transaid. a good day all round as i write we are just about to hold our final event of 2017 a seminar exploring the legal requirements and obligations set out in the recently implemented union Customs Code. Changes to international trading legislation mean that companies who are involved in importing or exporting goods will need to comply with new regulations and acquire aEO certification to avoid providing financial deposits and guarantees. looking ahead to 2018 many of you will already know that this is my last Christmas as FsDF Chief Executive. i am told that my team is already making arrangements for a special and appropriate venue for my last FsDF annual lunch and it would be great to see you all there. Details will shortly appear on the FsDF website and we are already taking sponsorship bookings. keep an eye out for your invitation. My role as logistics Director within tulip is twofold firstly to offer the best possible end to end logistics service at the lowest possible cost without ever compromising on quality or food safety. secondly to build a logistics platform that is able to deal with the changing needs of todays consumer. Question Could you briefly tell the tCs&D readers a little more about tulip please Answer tulip is proud to be at the fore of the food manufacturing industry providing a wide range of quality cost effective and innovative products to the retail and foodservice sectors from our 16 modern well invested manufacturing facilities located throughout the uk. Question What has been the most important technical development in your temperature controlled bodies 6 TC S& D M A G A Z I N E Footage. From personal experience they support Professional drivers many more times than they implicate them. Question are you using telematics across your fleet currently if so what advantages do you see this gives you Answer i have previously used telematics for many years now and i cant imagine life without them. you can get information immediately online and the information is factual and unbiased. in 2016 after a fatality on a local road i was able to work closely with the local traffic police to reconstruct the Rta and i m sure without this technology the police wouldn t have been able to complete their investigations so accurately and promptly. initially telematics was expensive but not now that it has become more readily available and more cost effective to appeal to mass audiences. Question Customer needs are constantly changing so what are you finding is now the biggest request from your customers Answer the challenge for all of us which is also created by all of us is trying to get our products to the right consumer channel in the shortest possible time. Consumer habits are changing and refrigeration systems in recent years and how has it impacted on your operations within tulip Answer telematics is by far the biggest development in recent years. Being able to get temperature records on line in real time is fantastic progress however we all have to realise that not every vehicle will have this type of technology until vehicles come round for renewals and by this time it will have advanced again. the advantages of such systems are that providing you monitor correctly you can prevent issues rather than dealing with them retrospectively. also CCtV cameras being fitted to commercial vehicles is a massive step forward. the majority of the public do not like Commercial vehicles and my experience is the cameras never lie and complaints against professional hgV drivers are easily clarified by the use of CCtV camera www. tcs andd. com NOVE MBE R DE CEM BER 2017 EXClusiVE VIEw FRoM ThE SUMMIT Feature sponsored by Enterprise Flex-E-Rent dynamically now with so many options available and it s inevitable that order lead time will decrease as online food shopping increases. trying to keep the cost base the same whilst we do things in shorter times will equally be a challenge. Question What environmental measures does tulip incorporate to ensure best practice Answer growing Responsibly is the name for our corporate responsibility programme. it underpins everything we do as a business. Our corporate responsibility department helps the business focus action on our areas of risk and drives improvement projects. Environmentally we are focussed right now on key issues such as energy management water reduction & food waste. Question since the Brexit decision have you noticed any changes with your business Answer the biggest challenge all manufacturers will face is the retention of European migrant labour who may choose to go home. the uk manufacturing base has become very reliant on them and the impact will be increased costs should the available labour pool shrink. Question lastly would you like to share any news about your company that you feel would benefit the tCs&D readers Answer tulip is a true Farm to Fork food manufacturer with a rich heritage and proud traditions going back over 130 years with its parent company Danish Crown. having control from the pig breeding all the way through the process to the fantastic products we make is a rare model in todays commercial world but one that we are very proud of and one that is constantly evolving. Finally i was completely blown away at the recent tulip apprentice Conference and awards seeing just how committed the business is to giving all our apprentices a unique experience beyond the traditional programme. it is a truly fantastic learning opportunity and having started my working career as an apprentice i can t believe how much this area has improved and tulip as a company has fully embraced the need to attract and develop future managers and specialists. By working with customers such as adelie solomon have been able to refine the design to a point where they can achieve an outstanding payload whilst maintaining the build strength and durability solomon are famed for. as well as from a practical specification the 3.5t vehicles are some of solomon s most stand out builds featuring custom mouldings for the rear 2 4 TCS& D M A G A Z I N E light clusters and rear corner capping giving a commercial vehicle a much more visually appealing makeover more akin to a recreational vehicle. taking what has been learned on the 3.5t adelie and tOM also have placed orders for 5t vehicles. these are built much in in the image of the 3.5t vehicles also on Mercedes sprinter chassis but designed to take the more heavy duty load of a 5t. Despite the increased strength requirements these vehicles still have a total payload of 2050kg. this along with their smaller van-like proportions make them a very real alternative to 7.5t chassis cabs. Completing the line-up the 18t vehicles are built on DaF chassis cabs. Built with undermount thermo king fridge units the vehicle is incredibly aerodynamic featuring solomon s slipstream aerodynamic design for undermount fridges. solomon s high-visibility infills for side guards also stand-out on these vehicles assisting in the visibility of the vehicle in dark conditions and preventing pedestrians or cyclists becoming trapped under the vehicle. internally the vehicles are of a dual-temperature specification designed around the exact requirements of the operation and continuing the development pace set on the 3.5t vehicles features a brand-new concept moving bulkhead design which aims to dramatically improve thermal performance compared to traditional rigid bulkhead systems. sean glover head of Distribution at adelie Foodservice said We have had a long term partnership working with the team at solomons that has enabled us to continually improve our vehicle design and payload. this combined with our driver s feedback and suggested improvements at each batch built has enabled us to have what we believe is a best in class vehicle for our operation. www. tcs andd. com NOVE MBE R DE CEM BER 2017 A Carrier Transicold UK authorised Network Partner NEW INNOVATIVE REFRIGERATED VEHICLE FROM TRUCKCRAFT BODIES T 0161 413 9300 W E info Follow us on 0161 304 9404 glen.pinder Our services Service Repair Installation 24 7-365 call out. Northwards are an established freight distribution and transport operator serving the north of scotland and the northern isles with depots in shetland Orkney scrabster inverness aberdeen and glasgow. it is one of the main operators on the routes to Orkney and shetland with arguably the most diverse and comprehensive range of equipment and services available for its clients. Four insuliner trailers have now been delivered by Cartwright to Northwards following a trial of the first trailer allowing the Cartwright engineers to further enhance the trailer s performance. this game changing insuliner has been specifically designed to combat the major salt problems Northwards have experienced in the past with its trailers being continually exposed to salt spray during the 14 hour ferry trip to from the mainland with rust then becoming a particular problem. With this in mind the trailer has been designed around a fully galvanised chassis with the headboard and rear door pillars made from the same material. For the crossbearers (supporting the insulated floor) side rave and cant rail Cartwright used the innovative Magnelis coated steel which offers the best possible strength with corrosion resistant properties that are up to to ten times better than galvanising. Neil leslie Director of Northwards ltd stated We have 55 vehicles and around 120 trailers and they are repeatedly exposed to the salt laden air on the 12-14 hour ferry journey between aberdeen and the shetland islands particularly in the autumn and winter months. the problem of salt was affecting the build integrity of our trailers particularly corrosion on the front bulkheads. the bespoke trailer is also fully ENXl compliant giving maximum load security for uniform loads without the need for additional strapping and also features a twin pelmet and heavily insulated curtain to ensure the best possible temperature control in the trailer. Neil added We are excited by the quality and specification of the new insuliner from Cartwright. We are primarily serving the island communities in Orkney and shetland and the freight is very varied. With a range of industries from aquaculture to Oil & gas it is a mixture of all types of goods for customers large and small to service the community on the islands and keep their economies going. these insuliners will be used to export fresh salmon from the islands with the versatility of being able to load a variety of different cargoes for the return journey by having the flexibility to load unload through the side rather than being restricted to the opening area of the rear doors on a standard fridge trailer. Jon Wilcock key accounts Manager for Cartwright commented We believe we have built the most robust carefully-designed insuliner for RORO operation in the marketplace. in our view it s the best in class available in the uk today. CoolKit box body milestone A forward-thinking manufacturing business has seen a rise in enquires after bringing a new product to market. award-winning Coolkit is busy converting vehicles for new and existing customers after adding the 3.5t box van to its inventory. the demo of the refrigerated box van was displayed as part of the CV show earlier in the year and shortly after the lancashire-based company celebrated being selected as manufacturer of choice for Renault trucks as part of their Ready for Business range. the Renault Master refrigerated box van has been manufactured utilising a high-impact ultra-light gRP interior with aluminum kick strip fitted to the wall and floor joints together with a high-density RtM styrofoam insulation under vacuum pressure to create the vehicle body panels. an under-body refrigeration unit was specified suitable for a temperature range of 0 C to 3 C. 2 6 TCS& D M A G A Z I N E the rear of the vehicle features double rear doors complete with retainers and lockable handles as well as internal release. a grab handle was also included within the design of the box body to allow easier entry and exiting of the vehicle finished with a lightweight rear safety step and parking distance sensors. the finished product boosts internal dimensions of 3.1m length 1.9m wide and 1.8m height with a payload of 1 156kg inclusive of 90% fuel and a driver at 75kg. Cameron Javed sales Director of Coolkit said the lightweight refrigerated box van was designed and manufactured with our customers in mind. We knew there was a need for a quality box body vehicle and we invested heavily in research and development to create a new and advanced design solution for this type of refrigerated vehicle. www. tcs andd. com NOVE MBE R DE CEM BER 2017 EQUIPMENT & SERVICES Say goodbye to cold store shutdowns Advanced Engineering the UK s leading manufacturer of ACR cleaning products has added a new cleaner to its range -- FroZoneTM - specially developed for lowtemperature cleaning. sub-zero refrigerators and freezers use a lot of energy so keeping them at optimal performance is incredibly important. Even a small drop in efficiency can noticeably increase energy usage. Dirt and debris build-up on external heat transfers can increase the condensing temperature or reduce evaporating temperature by several degrees adversely affecting freezer contents and increasing energy use by 10% or more. it can also cause health and safety issues including the contamination of produce from mould and mildew. unlike standard floor cleaners which freeze at 0 C FroZoneTM is specially-formulated to work at sub-zero temperatures of up to -25 C enabling on the spot cleaning... without waiting for the temperature to rise. this significantly reduces the time necessary for cleaning while minimising downtime and disruption. and by cutting through all the grease and grime FroZoneTM eliminates the risk of freezer shutdown. its non-metal corrosive formula ensures it s safe to use on aluminium stainless steel and copper surfaces - meaning it can be used to clean freezer heat exchanger surfaces- with no risk of damage. Not only does it make easy work of freezer walls and floors areas too often overlooked in maintenance but it is NsF registered making it perfect for cleaning in and around food processing areas without the worry of contamination. Advanced Engineering launches FroZoneTM for efficient sub-zero cleaning With the effective power of FroZone it s easier than ever to maintain standards eliminate contamination and keep equipment at peak performance -- all while reducing energy consumption. Radio loggers are also used to monitor temperature in refrigerated vehicles storing data locally while the vehicle is out and then automatically offloading it on return to the depot and within range of the mesh network. LAN loggers are ideal for applications where radio signals may be problematic due to range or physical obstructions. For example they can be used in metal-lined walk in fridges freezers or where a remote monitoring point is required outside the range of an existing Radio system wherever a convenient network point is available. Both radio and laN loggers will keep recording locally in the event of communications problems and will transmit their data once the connection is restored. immediate alarm notifications are generated if conditions fall outside user-defined limits. 44 (0) 1243 813000 sales Yau Brothers expand freezer capacity to provide a real taste of the orientals ent Yau brothers have been bringing an authentic taste of the orient to its customers from across the south of England for more than 30 years. the company s founder Raymond yau started his own takeaway establishment after arriving in the uk from hong kong back in the 1970 s. today the growing business is a successful supermarket and internet retailer based in southampton selling a wide range of oriental ingredients that supplies restaurants catering establishments and the general public. the aisles of the store are a real feast for the eyes containing all kinds of Chinese Japanese thai asian and Far East cuisine. keeping the chilled and frozen foods at exactly the right temperature is of course crucial for the business and for supplying quality ingredients to its customers. so when yau Brothers decided they needed to increase the amount of freezer space available and improve the visual impact 2 8 TCS& D M A G A Z I N E CSR-COVERS.indd 1 to service increased demand from their retail clients they turned to Cold store Rentals for their advice and a solution. Managing Director Chi yau says We know that Cold store Rentals have extensive experience working with specialist german manufacturers of cold store units and we love the excellent build quality of the Viessmann product. We also wanted a bespoke solution that would fit in with the available space and at the same time increase the size of the display area for our customers. tore R Cold S ts first rates i r celeb ul yea cessf suc thanks to steve Prior and the Cold store Rentals team we now have a customised solution that was designed precisely for our requirements. that means we now have more storage capacity for our frozen foods which is great news for us and for our growing retail business. steve Prior Managing Director of Cold store Rentals says We fully understood how important it was to yau Brothers to increase the amount of freezer capacity in the most efficient and cost effective way. that s why we recommended taking a standard freezer unit which we would then customise to fit into the available space. We are delighted that yau Brothers are pleased with the results. Chi added achieving a similar look and feel throughout our store is really important to us as is investing in equipment which is flexible can be moved easily if required and is also accessible.
