You might feel wretchedly hot numbingly cold or both. You re not exactly in prime condition to have all others eyes upon you. What is happening inside your mind is no picnic either. You re second-guessing the words you drafted what you re wearing the manner in which you styled your hair and the especially worrisome thought creeps in that for the love of all that is good you hope your nose and teeth are clean. You my dear friend are caught within the grips of anxiety and although so much of this feels awful and beyond your control it s not so. The good news is that there is plenty you can do. Anxiety is a natural reaction to something that feels threatening. Our bodies are conditioned to react whether something truly puts us in danger or not. When you come face-to-face with a bear it s a good thing that you react so strongly. You need to survive so the fight or flight reaction is helpful. However the wedding toast is no bear. It s 8 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM T he wedding is over the reception is under way and it is almost time for you to give a toast. All eyes will be upon you as you offer some heartfelt words. You re first aware of feeling physically uncomfortable. Your mouth is dry though amazingly other parts of your body have no problems time to channel that energy productively. First let s tackle the physical symptoms. When you know your body is getting stressed be intentional with counteracting the naturally-occurring fight or flight symptoms. Diaphragmatic breathing is your most powerful tool. This means you take deep and slow breaths that make your tummy expand--not your shoulders rise. You can count to four as you inhale and again to four as you exhale. By supplying your body with sufficient oxygen you prevent many of the other unpleasant physical freak out reactions. Next scan your body for the spots where you hold tension. Pay special attention to the back shoulders neck jaw and forehead. Stretch and rub the muscles deliberately make efforts to relax them. Now let s address your mind. It is common for us to think I can t stand this as the nervousness begins. Too much anxiety can indeed be paralyzing but research also shows that too little of it throws us off our game. We re not as alert and invested in doing something well so performance suffers. That means we actually do want to experience some anxiety. To prevent it from becoming too much however monitor your thoughts to avoid being overly harsh and self-critical. Continued on page 10 doctor lawrence weinstein Dear Dr. Weinstein What s the big deal about depression We are all depressed at times L.S. Dear L.S. Depression is a very big deal Like you wrote we are all sad from time to time. These feelings may last for a few days and then go away. But just imagine if they didn t. Imagine if the feelings of sadness overwhelmed you every single day of the year You are tired but you can t get to sleep. You sleep but you don t have energy to get up in the morning. Things that gave you pleasure for years no longer hold your interest. You re irritated you can t think straight there is a constant empty feeling in the pit of your stomach and everything can seem so hopeless. Then certain thoughts may crawl into your head. Thoughts like how nice it would be if you went to bed and didn t wake up. At first you may try to ignore these ideas but like the scent of freshly baked bread the thoughts of harming yourself beckon to you and become irresistible. While this may seem overly dramatic the CDC estimates that 10 percent of the adult population suffers from some form of depression. Sadly many people with depression never seek treatment. This is unfortunate as most people will get better with treatment. It s not surprising that major changes in life can cause depression. Things like losing a loved one a job or getting a divorce can cause depression. Even happy events can cause it. Getting married or having a baby can trigger depression. Doctors need to be aware that many medications we give to patients can cause depression. Beta blockers like Lopressor can affect the brain and cause depression. Alcohol can aggravate an underlying depression. Depression may also be the first sign of certain illnesses like cancer of the pancreas. Depression can target the elderly not just because of their age but because of loneliness the multiple medical problems they have and their lack of independence. In fact in some elderly patients their depression is so bad it can look like they have Alzheimer s. These patients respond very well to therapy. There is no shame in seeking help for depression. It is no different than any other illness. The key thing is to recognize the symptoms of depression and seek medical attention. The sooner you act the sooner you will be enjoying life again rather than dreading it. HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM 9 That s rather harsh don t you think And yet we have all thought it anxiety is a natural reaction to something that feels threatening. our bodies are conditioned to react whether something truly puts us in danger or not. when you come face-to-face with a bear it s a good thing that you react so strongly. you need to survive so the fight or flight reaction is helpful. Certainly some self-awareness can be helpful feedback to finetune what you do but now is not the time to unleash the inner critic. If you can distract yourself from attending to it. Rather than focusing internally be present with what is happening around you externally here and now. For any thoughts that you do pay attention to actively construct them to be helpful and be careful of statements that include must or should. For example avoid saying to yourself I must do this perfectly or else I have failed myself and others. in some form at one time or another. It does nothing to build you up it only tears you down. Instead think I m going to do the best that I possibly can. I did what is within my power to prepare and from here forward I ll do my best to adapt to whatever else happens. On a side note is it true and did you do what you could to prepare That is a separate but related issue. To put your mind at ease ensure you have done what was healthily possible to be ready for what might be coming your way. You are within a few minutes of giving your toast. You ve been breathing deeply and you will continue to do so as you speak. You relaxed your shoulders and unclenched your jaw. You did your homework and prepared what you want to express. You feel the adrenaline but you know that it is helping you be skillful on your feet and attend to the task with focus. You take one more deep breath as you think to yourself I am ready to do my best. The eyes are upon you because indeed you are admirable in how you are carrying yourself. Besides a portion of the audience doesn t closely attend to your words anyway. They are worrying about what someone else thinks of their words actions attire etc. Anxiety is inevitable and all of us experience it. The key is knowing how best to work with it. We believe that patients who are not yet interested in surgical procedures can still benefit and enjoy significant improvement with combination treatments that address the different aspects that can make a person look and feel younger and better. As with most things in life the level of improvement is subjective and varies from one patient to the other. Some aging patients will see fewer significant results with noninvasive and minimally-invasive protocols than the more effective skin-excisional procedures. That is why it is so important to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to get the best course of treatment and set realistic expectations. As we aspire to provide our patients with the best and most effective treatment protocols we offer our patients various options to help improve the different aspects such as skin color and texture skin laxity and volume. For each category we offer a number of treatments and technologies. Skin tightening using Radio Frequency technology REFIT for the body RELIFT for face and neck The radio frequency technology works by heating the layers of the skin breaking the collagen crosslinks and improving the skin elasticity with what is called neocollagenesis. By minimizing collagen deposits and increasing blood circulation healthy collagen production and skin shrinkage in the deepest layer the dermis is promoted. I always wanted to be one of those women who wear red lipstick. I tried for years experimenting with different textures tones and formulas. However successfully pulling off the style always eluded me. As I ve gotten more experienced after years of purchasing and wearing lipsticks and years of trial and sometimes disastrous error warm undertones). The writer advises nude light mocha and mauve for fair skin with cool undertones and shell sand or nude peach for warm undertones. She warns against bright pink dark bronze and dark mocha shades. She suggests people with medium skin with cool undertones use rosy pink pomegranate and cranberry while those with warm undertones should use bronze copper and cinnamon but she advises them to stay away from nudes to keep from looking washed out. The writer also indicates that olive skin of both undertones can handle the same shades brick red brown red caramel and dark berry. Finally dark skin with cool undertones looks best with raisin wine and ruby red and warm undertones require honey ginger or coppery bronze shades. However in many cases dark skin is not most advantageously displayed with orange shades. Skin Tone Everyone knows that a lipstick that looks glamorous playful or just off often depends on how the color looks with one s skin. However because the skin on your face may be a different shade than that on your hand where many women dab color to try it out you make the best decision by looking in a mirror at the lipstick on your lips. Approaching a salesperson at the makeup counter and asking to try a sample of a few colors with the potential to buy them is encouraged not frowned upon. This will allow you to have an accurate perspective on how the lipstick works with your skin tone without the buyer s regret that often occurs if you do not preview the shade. Different colors take on whole new aspects depending on one s skin tone. An article in Women s Health Magazine provided an in-depth look at lipstick shades that focused on complimentary colors for a person s undertone it suggests that you know whether you are cool or warm by the color of the veins on the inside of your wrists when viewed in natural light (bluer means cool undertones while more green indicates 12 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM Hair Color As well as skin tone flattering shades may also be affected by hair color. For example redheads have to pay attention to whether their lipstick shade is competing with the vividness of their hair blondes can be overwhelmed by excessively bold or dark choices and brunettes of all skin tones can play up the drama with bright choices. However Lipstick Style Lounge s Ashley Melchior suggests that some blondes can pull off a Marilyn Monroe look with a true red lipstick. Technology The current vivid lip trends provide a great excuse to experiment with defying the boundaries of what you ve always thought of as your shade. In addition modern beauty technology can also play a part in how much you can investigate different lip shades that work for you. Those of us who remember the 80s may have had more than one experience with a smudged purple fuchsia or neon pink lipstick. However the many lipstains lipsticks and other products whose assertion of long-lasting wear not only sells the sizzle but has the steak to back it up provides the opportunity to be more adventuresome by allowing formerly timid lipstick lovers or those in a shade rut to branch out without fear of the smear. Revlon s ColorStay Ultimate SuedeTM lipstick can give a fair-skinned blonde the courage to wear the red-berry Couture or a dark-skinned brunette the freedom to experiment with the brick-red Backstage. For those who don t need quite that much staying power and want a little more hydration L Oreal s InfallibleTM Never Fail Lipgloss can let a redhead with medium skin tone explore flattering colors that don t contrast with her hair. Finally self-awareness is necessary for that final check on whether a color is right for you. Obviously clothes and events can make a difference in how your lipstick shade appears but if you cannot imagine pulling off a certain color with your current wardrobe or profession or personality leave it at the store Sources womenshealthmag.com haircolorforwomen.com and lipstickstylelounge.blogspot.com. While his athletic skill was evident his mental strength was more important. Breaking the color line in baseball required him to be exposed to hatred and racism at its worst. Bigotry and slurs were continually fired at him not only by the public but by his own teammates as well. As Branch Rickey (played so well by Harrison Ford) the manager of the Dodgers indicated Jackie was important to baseball but he had to learn NOT to fight back. Jackie had enemies who openly degraded him tried to arrest him or refused him a hotel room. Despite his tribulations he contributed to his team and the game of baseball. We are tested every day by annoyances. People cut us off on the road. The lady in front of us in the express line has 11 items instead of 10. The waiter delivers our meal before we can finish our appetizers. While these may be petty I saw people act out to these issues on the day I went to see the movie. Yes there are serious problems which we still need to address with mental strength. Remember it is not the stressor that creates the stress it is our reaction to the stressor. Staying mindful of this is easier said than done but changing one s perspective can prevent a tough problem from becoming an ugly one. When a problem arises think how important it is in the great scheme of life. Step back and take a broad perspective without taking it personally or seeing it as an affront. Jackie Robinson looked to the greater good even though it would have been easier to fight. The latter solution would have set back the efforts being made toward integration at the time and for the future. Leaving the theater after seeing this film one feels inspired by the meaning of fortitude. For this boy who grew up in Brooklyn I was proud to have seen Jackie Robinson play. While I only visited him at Ebbets Field for a brief period his legend continues to this day. The valuable lessons of character are portrayed in the movie 42 The Revolutionary Hair Transplantation System... No Scar. No Scalpel. No Stitches. By Daniela Dadurian M.D. Hair loss is a far too common problem equally affecting both men and women. It is a stressful condition because it is visible to others and negatively impacts self esteem. Typically after underlying medical conditions have been ruled out patients are left frustrated without a solution for their hair loss. Fortunately there are many treatments available to combat hair loss including hair transplantation. Historically hair transplant for women was not an option and for men it was considered a last resort because of scarring down time and unnatural hairlines. Now with the advent Neograft an automated hair transplant device transplantation is a viable option for both men and women. This technology allows for extraction of individual hair follicles from the back of the head that are genetically impervious to falling out. These follicles are then re-implanted in areas of hair loss. This process is discreet and natural looking avoiding past problems of unsightly scars and obvious evidence of a transplant even immediately following the procedure. Hair transplantation with Neograft is typically completed in one day and requires minimal recovery time. This revolutionary safe and effective procedure is now available as part of the comprehensive hair restoration program at MD Beauty Labs. Shortly after Radha received her bachelor s degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton she met Derrick D. Berry the man who would eventually become both her husband and her business partner. It was their mutual passion for business and success that drew them together initially. As they discovered their compatibility in almost every area of their lives the two business partners decided to create a personal partnership as well. They ve been married for 10 years even though they ve worked together for 13 years and have known each other even longer. Radha s childhood goal of becoming a landlord has been reached and surpassed but it wasn t a quick and easy dream to realize. It costs money to own real estate and neither Radha nor Derrick had the resources necessary to invest in property when they first met. But they did have a relentless drive to succeed and a willingness to put in the hard work and sacrifice needed to reach their goals. They decided to start a business that required little overhead as their first step into entrepreneurship. They began and steadily grew a residential cleaning business. This may have seemed like a step backward for someone with a HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM 17 less of circumstances. I try to live a dream life every day with regard to both my personal life and professional life Radha asserted. That s saying a lot for someone who was riding on the crest of the wave in 2008 when the booming real estate industry crashed and devastated a large number of brokers and agents. Even as a child Radha seemed to know that her success would be tied to real estate. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up her answer wasn t typical in any way. Instead of becoming the president a doctor or even a movie star Radha responded with I want to be a landlord. T hat s advice from Radha Anne Berry successful real estate broker wife and mother of two boys. She says she has drawn on the unique strength of womanhood both in the realms of business and motherhood. Radha strongly believes that you can enjoy life regard- college degree but Radha believes it is accurate thinking that is critical to success not just accepting the ideas and standards that seem to be the norm. The cleaning business provided a foundational step to move her further toward her real estate goal. Despite the success of the cleaning business Radha and Derrick knew that it would take additional effort on their part to raise the financial capital they needed to begin investing in real estate. To achieve their goals in a shorter length of time they made another bold move that went against the grain from the choices most young couples were making. Instead of seeking out housing that would allow them to live comfortably within their means they chose to move into a less-than-desirable neighborhood where rent was low and crime rates were high. We were simply deferring gratification Radha said. Their double-sided strategy of increasing income and decreasing their cost of living worked. In a very short time they were able to purchase their first duplex. They lived in one side and rented out the other side. Radha had become a landlord Within four years they increased their ownership to ten rental units. It was time to move on to the next step in their journey. Radha and Derrick became licensed as real estate agents and mortgage brokers and opened Buccaneer Mortgage. The business grew quickly and it wasn t long before Radha had set aside her cleaning business to commit herself full time as a buyer s real estate agent assisting Buccaneer Mortgage clients in finding properties that met their needs. Radha quickly became a multi-million dollar producer. Another expansion was in order. Radha and Derrick opened two new businesses a real estate brokerage and a real estate investment company. By 2006 their various businesses employed over 80 licensed professionals in either real estate or mortgage brokerage. Radha was now a top Realtor in South Florida generating a seven-figure income. She could afford to live a life of comfort and enjoy the success they had worked so hard to achieve. In 2008 two big changes occurred for Radha and Derrick. Having achieved so many of their goals they began their family. Their first son Dylan was born that year. Unfortunately on the business side the change was not a positive one. It was the beginning of the recession which sent the real estate and mortgage industries into a deep dive. At our worst our companies revenues tumbled by almost 75 percent making it nextto-impossible for our existing business model to continue Radha recalled. We had to make many tough decisions in order to survive. Once again Radha and Derrick chose a unique strategy in the face of these difficult circumstances. They decided to diversify and expand. They added short sales REOs and rentals to their real estate specialties and reverse mortgages to their mortgage products. They also started two new businesses an insurance agency and a title company. The new companies and products helped bring in the critical cash flow needed as the other revenues were declining. They also expanded their geographical reach to the entire state of Florida for both their real estate and mortgage businesses. The mortgage brokerage reached out even further into the Caribbean. Their expand and diversify strategy paid off. They not only survived a recession that caused many other businesses to fold but came out even stronger than they were before. You must constantly evolve and identify new trends that may change your strategy or business model Radha advised. It is possible for even a 100-year-old business to become obsolete if it does not evolve as a business. The family was expanding at home as well. Their second son Donovan was born in 2011. Not wanting to give up time with her children or her work within their businesses Radha came up with her own solution for combining the two she created a nursery at the office for her two boys. Her nanny came with the boys to the office to care for their needs while Radha was busy running her business but Radha was always nearby to be the mother she wanted to be. Never 18 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM one to keep a good thing to herself Radha made the nursery available for the children of her employees if they needed to bring a child to work for a day or a few hours. Not every couple can successfully operate in business together but Derrick and Radha are a great example of how two people can make it work when they share the same goals and values. We complement each other Radha said. Derrick is the heart and I am the hands. She also notes that their two families are very similar and have been very supportive of them in both their personal relationship and business ventures. Radha s parents have been examples for her of what it takes to succeed in the world both in business and in marriage. They ve been married for over 45 years Radha smiled proudly. I give my mother credit for helping me to become a strong and independent woman and my father credit for helping develop my entrepreneurial spirit and teaching me to think outside the box. Radha was only 19 years old when her father allowed her to join him in managing his own business. As Radha and Derrick make plans to expand nationally they ve decided to rebrand and trademark their businesses as The Good Pirates Mortgage The Good Pirates Realty and The Good Pirates Insurance to differentiate themselves from the many businesses with Buccaneer in their names. They ve set their goals high as usual. They hope to become active in 18 different states in addition to the Caribbean through this expansion. Radha feels that real estate is a great career for someone who has the ability to develop a financially successful career and is looking for flexibility in their work schedule. She also highly recommends the book The Law of Success in 16 Lessons by Napoleon Hill originally published in 1928 for anyone interested in succeeding in business and in life. She has been able to implement the lessons it contains in almost every area of her life. Radha provides this final piece of advice for those wanting to succeed in life Never stop believing in yourself. A healthy dose of confidence goes a long way. 19 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM herlife culinary by la u re n c o le ph o t o g r a ph y pro v i d e d b y joe w ool f Vic A &elo s ng dishes that are truly appreciated by their patrons. Do the actual caregivers lead the activities Do they attend the classes and workshops with the children Are the children supervised at all times even during naptime What are the procedures for discipline It should be positive clear consistent and fair at all times. Ask if the childcare provider has been accredited by a national organization. Providers falling under that umbrella have to meet voluntary standards that are higher than most state licensing requirements. There are several however the biggest players are the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and the NAFCC (The National Association for Family Child Care). It s also a good idea to check staff turnover. I found at my center that most staff members had been there eight years or more and a few even longer. That was a big deciding factor for me. It s best for kids to stay with the same caregiver if possible. Caregivers who come and go can make it hard on your child--and you. Check out the adult-to-child ratio. It comes down to how many kids are there for each adult. The fewer children for each adult supervisor the better it is for your child. You want them to get plenty of attention especially for a younger child. Keep in mind that babies need an adult-tochild ratio of no more than one adult for four babies while four-year-olds (on average) can do well with a ratio of one adult to ten children. And caregiver will be a partner in your happy village it will help. And we are not alone--70 percent of parents place their young children in some form of daily care. Start early It will take time no matter what type of care you are considering. At-home care (a nanny) wasn t an option in my area so I began touring in-home daycares and daycare centers. It s a good idea to begin your search by calling local experts one example is your area Child Care Resource and Referral agency (CCR&R). You can find information such as the licensing requirements in your area licensing violations and complaint information through this organization. If your family qualifies for any childcare financial assistance the CCR&R can help there too. Keep your budget front and center while you set up visits. When visiting prospective facilities here are some things to look out for or ask your guide along the way. What are the caregiver s qualifications Ask about their education and training. They ll be happy to fill you in on any degrees or special training they may have. The extras in a care24 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM I am a firm believer in the it takes a village school of thought. But I wasn t in the beginning...and I m referring to that moment as a working mother when you drop off your child for the first time with another caregiver. Whether it s a baby or a four-year-old a parent will never forget this moment. If you have the peace of mind that your since you re asking about ratios how about the group sizes too And how are they organized within the building I noticed with my son who was an only child that he preferred the smaller groups with fewer adults rather than the large massive groups with many adults. Every child is different but it s good to have options that work with your child. Once you make up your mind however the work isn t quite done. After all you and the other caregivers will be partners going forward. Regular meetings (parent conferences if you will) are a great way to stay connected and to ask questions that may be on your mind. Every day when I picked up my son there was an activity sheet waiting for me that bullet-pointed his day. I was also able to chitchat with his caregiver if I chose. In addition I found that being at the center for birthday parties or holiday parties was a great way to stay connected. I also volunteered to read books aloud certain days in my son s group. If you can plan ahead with work and get the time off join in for these special events or better yet be a volunteer helper on a field trip. This gives you a perfect chance to see all the cogs of the well-oiled machine in action. To this day when we drive past my son s old daycare facility he asks if we can swing in and visit. He s ten years old now and in fourth grade. That s a mark of a happy and successful partnership. Yes--it definitely takes a village. Granite and other forms of natural stone are a prominent part of the natural landscape in Massachusetts. It s easy to come by and it blends well into the natural habitat. When Michael began spending half of the year in Florida five years ago he was immediately struck by the lack of stonework used in landscape design here. His creative mind immediately began envisioning lush tropical gardens with water features sending trickling streams over natural stone and natural stone patios with gurgling fountains and stone benches for seating. There are no two ingredients in landscape design that make a better combination than water and stone Michael explained. One glimpse at Michael s landscape designs will tell you that Michael most definitely loves stone. I fell in love with stone when I moved from Texas create amazing pieces of art. However his pieces of art are as functional as they are beautiful. The creation of one-of-a-kind- natural stone sculptures for the gardens Michael designs for his clients has set him apart from his competition. Mosaic patterns made from natural stone are often found imbedded in his patios and walkways. He has a unique eye for color combinations and making use of space in ways that is truly inspirational. At the same time his stone work ranges from symmetrical patterns to rugged strong-featured slabs that appear to have just been unearthed from their glacial deposit. Michael s landscape designs have been publicly acknowledged with the repeated awards he has received. His creations won Landscape Design Award I from the Landscape Design Council of Massachusetts in 2004 2006 and 2010. In 2006 and 2010 he also won the Emily Seaber Parcher Award for outstanding use of stone the integration of plants and hardscape and the skilled balance of large specimen plants. The judging panel in 2010 called his naturalistic design style a true feast for the senses and applauded the integration of New England granite falling water and plants in an artistic yet naturalistic setting. In 2010 Michael had his first major installation in a public botanical garden when he placed one of his stone sculptures at the entrance to New England s premier wildflower garden The Garden in the Woods managed by the New England Wild Flower Society. Michael also created two stone benches to be used for seating while viewing the sculpture. You get a true taste of Michael s artistic eye for pieces of stone as he describes these benches. The larger bench has a beautiful golden and gray patina with fascinating layers shared Michael. The first time I saw this piece of stone I knew I wanted it for a bench and I knew it was meant to be horizontal. there are no two ingredients in landscape design that make a better combination than water and stone michael explained. one look at the gardens that he has designed tells you that he is an artist who uses the elements of nature to create amazing pieces of art. Of course Florida and Massachusetts are two different worlds when it comes to climate and outdoor living. We have coral rock instead of granite palm trees instead of pines and use our patios year-round not just in the summer. Michael recognizes this and is enjoying the new inspirations that develop as he works with these broader parameters. The porous nature of coral has created an entirely new dimension when it comes to incorporating native stone into Florida landscapes. At the same time Michael has enjoyed bringing some not-so-native stone work into his Florida hardscapes as well creating a whole new look for homeowners who want to make a more individual statement through their outdoor living spaces. On the Original Earthworks website Michael provides before and after photos of some of the landscapes that he s transformed from dull and boring to eye-capturing natural beauty. The contrast is amazing particularly because the after shots look so natural you would assume that the shrubs and stone pathways had been there for decades. Having lived in Florida for five years Michael has developed a love for the natural beauty that can only be found here in South Florida. It offers a totally different climate and variety of plant species than what he enjoyed in New England and although the stones may be of different types than those he found in the North they still have a language that speaks to the artist within him. Second there s the fact that you re being evaluated not just for your professional skills but for your personality as well which is always cause for anxiety. Hiring managers have a few secrets that might help you understand more about what really matters in an interview--and land the job. . . . but they don t really want to fix you coffee. Chances are when you walk in for the interview you ll be offered a drink usually water or coffee. While it s okay to accept a cup or bottle of water (especially if you know the interview will take longer than an hour) coffee is a more labor-intensive process and most hiring managers have better ways to use precious interview time than fetching you java. If a hiring manager thinks you won t mesh well with the company culture you and your impressive resume could wind up on the other side of the door. Their plans don t always work out. Almost every job interview wraps with a discussion about the timeline for filling the position. Frequently the hiring manager underestimates how much time that s going to take. This is fine as long as you remember that love grows fainter with flaws. Every home no matter how new or old comes with problems to be fixed and issues to be addressed so strive to buy a home that is a good decision for both your finances and your feelings. Be emotional but be rational and your dream home won t give you nightmares down the road. During the cocktail hour Tony was overwhelmed by the choices of sushi appetizers (he had never eaten sushi). Stefany saw the confusion across his face and offered some suggestions of where to start. From there they began chatting and flirting. And it continued throughout the wed- ding the after-party and until 5 in the morning With sparked interest the following day Tony invited Stefany to lunch at her favorite restaurant (unbeknownst to him). After lunch they went to the beach then to dinner and again talked into the wee hours of the morning. The next day Tony was scheduled to return home to Milwaukee. Stefany happily went to lunch with him and drove him to the airport. They promised to keep in touch and much to Stefany s delight Tony kept his promise They have been together for almost two years a long-distance romance. It hasn t been easy but they knew this was something special from the beginning and that it was worth the commitment. There have been many tearful goodbyes and dateless nights. But the good has definitely outweighed the bad including lots of virtual dates flower deliveries and homemade gifts sent via USPS. Being apart has added an element of romance every time they see each other. However they can t wait until they can actually live in the same place with each other And that chance is closer than you think since Tony popped the question on April 4 2013. After an exhausting day of meetings Stefany headed home ready to curl up in her bed. As she pulled her car into the driveway of the house the headlights flooded the front porch revealing a note on the door. Extremely confused Stefany jumped out of the car and noticed the lit candles spelling out love on the ground with a ring pop in the center of the o. The note was in Tony s 40 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM handwriting asking her to come to the back of the house. Still confused instead of going through the house like a rational person would Stefany walked through the side garden in the dark. Trying not to trip over the plants she took her phone out to light the way. As Stefany rounded the corner to the back yard she was taken aback. The dock was lined with glowing paper lanterns and at the end of the dock stood Tony. She tried to remain composed as she happily skipped across the dock into his arms. Tony looked into Stefany s eyes sweetly saying I have a question to ask you. Then he lowered himself to one knee and took out the most spectacular ring from his pocket. In that moment Stefany s surprise was captured as he had arranged for Stefany s sister (a professional photographer) to be there for the moment. She had been hiding in the boat all along Stefany exclaimed YES and they intertwined into the longest embrace of their lives. Both Tony s parents and Stefany s parents married on March 8. They have been married 37 years and 33 years respectively. With the shared date falling on a Saturday in 2014 Tony and Stefany will wed at the Palm Beach Zoo on March 8 surrounded by family and friends. As owner and chief wedding coordinator of The Majestic Vision Stefany is looking forward to using her personal expertise in creating the perfect day for their wedding. Many people don t realize the Eurail train system also known as Eurorail makes it very easy to move around the continent. Traveling by train in Europe is not at all like traveling by train in the United States as trains are the main form of transportation in Europe. For many Americans trains are a thing of the past more of an idea and a secondary means of travel. When we think of trains we think of old Western movies and inefficiency but in Europe the trains are incredibly modern and dependable accommodating everyone and everything. There are restaurants and bedrooms inside these trains and the best part is that you don t have to pay baggage fees or squish in between two other people. You don t have to stay in your seat either so if you want to go up to the observation deck and watch the beautiful scenery fly by then you are able to do so in comfort. Traveling by train in Europe is also much easier than driving considering you re in a foreign country with strange road signs in a strange language that you don t speak. Taking the rail will ensure you arrive at your actual destination. Another bonus of riding on the train is that you re able to take in everything that s around you as opposed to focusing on the road as you drive. Many of the rails have outlets and WiFi also so you can do 17 things at once like a true American. And if you want to really multitask European night rails are very popular and they can get you across the country in the time it takes for you to get seven solid hours of shut eye. Prices for Eurail passes are extremely reasonable. If you want to travel in one country you can do so for up to 10 days for the equivalent of 50. Consider that fact from this perspective. If the United States offered a rail pass for only 50 and you could travel to your heart s desire within 44 HERLIFEMAGAZINE.COM T here is nothing quite like taking a vacation overseas and many people would suggest starting with Europe. An immense amount of history lies within Europe as well as the breathtaking views and of course the food. You cannot forget about the food. But the problem with traveling for most people isn t when we think of trains we think of old western movies and inefficiency but in europe the trains are incredibly modern and dependable accommodating everyone and everything. there are restaurants and bedrooms inside these trains and the best part is that you don t have to pay baggage fees or squish in between two other people. the entire United States for up to 10 days we Americans would have no excuse for not seeing all of our country. Eurail even offers a Global Pass that allows travel anywhere within Europe for up to three months for about 501. Some people spend more on gas in one month than the cost of the Global Pass. On raileurope.com you can talk with a travel agent if you feel it s necessary and they will help you figure out which trains to take from what location. Instead of flying within Europe take the train and you ll get to your destination more economically while seeing awesome scenery and being comfortable the entire time. For instance you want to travel from Paris France to Florence Italy. If you took a train you would probably board around 7 00 p.m. and arrive around 7 00 a.m. meaning you could sleep the entire time and catch up on sights to see in Florence when you arrive. If you flew from Paris to Florence you would wait in line at security and then sit in a very uncomfortable seat for the length of the flight. Any traveler can be sure that travel is more comfortable on a train than on a plane. There are multiple ways to receive a train ticket as well. The standard paper ticket is still available but more modern ticketing methods include e-tickets and purchasing at a kiosk within the station. There are apps to download on your phone that will book your train ride for you and reserve your ticket. If you do happen to reserve a ticket and then decide you would like to go somewhere else refunds and exchanges are available. Some things in life just make more sense. Enjoying a vacation makes sense and so does furthering your cultural knowledge and taking that vacation overseas. Taking a train and seeing as much of the country as possible makes sense while spending a large portion of your travel budget and being uncomfortable doesn t. You can travel in luxury and see all of Europe even if your funds are tight. Exploring the world and learning about different cultures is something that everyone can do no matter what their circumstances. There are some things that Europe has done well and making travel by train accessible to all is definitely one of them.
