Description: Take your sweetie to Tahiti. Hot New Ships! The Cruise Diet.

Enc ore Cruises 20 13 The Cruise Magazine Take your sweetie to Tahiti Hot New Ships The Cruise Diet sea World the TM Ask Q Encore Q Only a small percentage of Canadians have ever been on a cruise. What would you say to someone considering it for the first time Cruising is a wonderful carefree holiday that offers just about everything. Of course all your meals are included and so is the entertainment as well as the many amenities on board. You will visit different places without having to pack and change hotels and you will enjoy relaxing days and hours at sea. Statistics show that once people take a cruise they repeat it many times. Q Are cruises a good choice for kids Not only are cruises good for kids of all ages they are in many ways the best holiday you can choose for the family. Many cruise lines cater to children and teens in a big way. There s something to keep them busy in a supervised setting all day and evening. This allows you to have time in the spa or the gym or having a romantic dinner while your kids are wonderfully occupied. And for your teens it s a safe environment where you can give them a little freedom Plus they will get to see several different destinations at once Q With so many new ships and different cruise lines how do you choose and book your cruise Q Is it true everyone gains weight on a cruise This is really where a travel agent is of great value. Q What about destinations There are so many now. What do you recommend Q What is the biggest trend in cruising today This is why people tend to take many cruises there are so o 4 www.encorecruises.com many parts of the world you can see by cruise ship. All our destinations are wonderful in their own way it will depend on what interests you and the time of year Most Canadians begin with either a Caribbean cruise Alaska or a Mexican Riviera cruise because these are the closest regions. For the experienced cruiser we recommend something more exotic such as the Baltic Antarctic the South Pacific or South America. One of the growing trends is to celebrate special occasions. We see families friends and work associates cruising together to celebrate milestones. It s a perfect way to spend time together and also apart with so many activities to do on board the ship. This is best done through your agent so you don t have to get involved in everyone s plans. Travel agents have sailed on many different ships and been trained on the various features of the different cruise lines. Cruise lines vary in price size of ship amenities on board and itineraries. An agent can help you sort through the many choices available to you to find the perfect fit for the vacation you want. The more information you give your agent about yourselves the better he or she can select just the right cruise lines through Encore Cruises. Your agent can also ensure that your flights are booked and also add any pre or post-cruise stays that you might want to do while you are there. Well we d be lying if we said no But while the food on cruise ships is excellent and plentiful and you will eat more than you do at home there is ample opportunity to choose healthy options as well as to exercise at the gym on the track on deck and on shore Cruise ships have become very conscious of offering a wide selection and always include calorie wise solutions as well as vegetarian offerings. But hey you re on vacation so enjoy You can hit the gym when you get home. More and more ships are being added to accommodate river cruising in Europe Russia Asia and Africa. One of the advantages of river cruising is that you are right there in the heart of the countryside and docking in the centre of towns and villages along the way. So you get a different perspective that you cannot get any other way. Probably the highlight after many wonderful cruises for me was the opportunity to sail on Paul Gauguin Cruises because of the South Seas setting and the onboard experience but there are several close runners up o 5 10 Things About Cruises Did you know Cruising is the fastest growing segment of tourism in the world. 1 The middle of the ship is where you will feel the least motion. 2 3 o 6 Only about 2% of North Americans have ever been on a cruise The first cruises were freighters that carried a few paying passengers on their voyages all around the world. It is still possible to book passage on some freighters. Modern cruise ships continue to outdo each other with unusual amenities. You can find skating rinks water slides rock climbing walls putting greens driving ranges paddle tennis and on and on. 5 When facing forward on a ship the left side is Port side and the right side is Starboard. 7 River cruise companies cannot build new ships fast enough to keep up with demand. Multiple new ships are deployed every year. Staterooms are compact but there s usually room for everything. Ideally bring suitcases or large totes that can easily fit under the bed frame (built for this purpose) during your cruise. The 70s TV show The Love Boat was responsible for promoting the idea of cruising to the mass market. www.encorecruises.com 4 Steamship lines created what we know today to be the travel agent . Originally travel agents were ticket agents selling passage on steamships long before commercial aviation took off. Can you find them o 22 www.encorecruises.com ...there was a family named Lepage and they lived in a medium sized town in Canada. They were a very happy family but like many families they had had their share of hardships along the way. Little Marc Lepage had been very sick for a long while and had spent a lot of time in the children s hospital. This meant that they had not been able to spend much time together as a family and they had not been on a vacation in over three years. Marc s mother Solange spent a lot of time sleeping at the hospital with Marc. His father Norman had to work hard to support the family and stay home to look after Marc s sister Elyse who was in Grade 9. Marc was in Grade 2 when he became sick so he couldn t go to school very much. When he was feeling ok he had lessons at home and he was a very good student. His favourite subject was Geography. Marc loved maps and stories about far away places. Marc told his parents what he wanted more than anything when he grew up was to see the world and travel a lot. Then one day not long before Christmas Marc s doctor Dr. Jivanjee told Marc s parents that he had good news. Marc was going to be fine he was cured Everyone was so happy Solange & Norman hugged Dr. Jee and then hugged Marc for so long he could hardly breathe They told Elyse when they got home from school and everyone hugged again. That night at dinner they all agreed they had to do something special to celebrate Marc s getting better. I know said Elyse. Marc loves geography and he wants to travel....let s take him on a cruise That way he can visit several places in one trip Norman and Solange thought this was a great idea and they promised to talk to their travel agent the very next day about which was the best one to pick. Marc didn t know what to say he was so excited and happy Soon the cruise was booked they would go while Elyse was on school break. They found out that cruise lines had something for every age group on board the ships and Norman and Solange were looking forward to also having some time alone together after such a difficult time. Marc was thrilled to hear that he would be visiting Florida for the first time before they boarded their ship and sailed to so many Once upon a time... different islands. Marc got out his globe that he got for Christmas and a map of the Caribbean. He drew a line of the ship s route on his map. And he spent hours looking at the website of the cruise line and seeing all the things there were for him to do at the ports of call. Mom Dad Look we can go swimming with stingrays in Grand Cayman And we can climb this waterfall in Jamaica And we can go snorkelling in Cozumel its part of Mexico And Marc wanted to plan his time on board the ship too. Wow Mom look at this amazing waterslide...I m going to spend all my time in the pool he said. And at night I m going to play video games in the special kids club...look at all the cool games they have Marc s sister Elyse was pleased to find out that there was a special club for her age group. Thank goodness she said rolling her eyes. I will be able to hang out with kids my own age and not be with a bunch of little kids..... and I can stay up late in the disco after you guys go to bed We will see about that young lady said Norman. But for sure you will have a great time I promise. He and Solange had been told by the travel agent that cruising was great for families because there was something for every age group and this allowed everyone to have fun and have some space from each other but also to come together at meal times and whenever they wanted. Norman and Solange were so happy to be able to do this as the family had not been able to go on vacation for a long time. This will be the best vacation ever Solange said. And we can relax and visit the spa and maybe have a romantic dinner for two along the way. Finally the day came for them to go on their cruise. They had spent ages packing all their summer clothes. Marc couldn t wait to go on an airplane his first time. Before they left for the airport he told his parents Mom & Dad thank you so much for taking us on this cruise....I m so happy . Hooked on Cruising the By Jill Wykes Editor C r uise & Travel Lifestyles Magazine Med What I love about the Mediterranean most of all is the normally calm waters. The first time I ever went on a Mediterranean cruise it was with my two sons who were 14 and 16 at the time. They had never been to Europe other than to England where their grandparents lived and I thought this might be a good way to give them a taste of Europe as well as an adventure on the ship. And what better way to introduce them to the very cradle of civilization where so much of our history was made and where our languages come from. On one short Mediterranean cruise you can learn about the Romans and the Greeks and see what they built. It really is the centre of the world And although as a travel writer I had been to Europe many times I had never had the opportunity to explore the Mediterranean regions and certainly not by ship. Our itinerary sounded dreamy to me Barcelona Palma de Mallorca Rome Florence and Genoa. I still remember us visiting the Colosseum the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain in Rome and of course on to the Vatican where we encountered hundreds of youth groups who were visiting from around the world. In Florence we saw the famous statue of David and the fabulous Duomo then we enjoyed a pizza lunch in the square and then it was on to shop in the markets where we all found bargains. We wandered the Ramblas in Barcelona stopping at the many stalls eating street food and looking for souvenirs. We took a taxi to see the incredible Sagrada Familia a stunning example of the unique architecture of Gaudi and then we hung out on the spectacular waterfront developed for the Olympic Games. In Palma we wandered the old streets and managed to escape to a beach for the afternoon - this turned out to be a momentous occasion for us all. For one son it introduced him to fine multi-course dining...he went on to become a chef spending a summer training in Mallorca at a Michelin 2 Star restaurant. For my older son it whetted his appetite for Europe and when he finished university he took off with two friends and his backpack for a whirlwind tour of Western and Eastern Europe. As for me I am hooked on cruising the Med The Mediterranean itself touches on many countries in Europe North Africa and the Middle East. It leads to the Adriatic Sea which borders on the Eastern coast of Italy and the Baltic peninsula. It also leads to the Aegean Sea surrounding Greece and its magical islands. And of course you can sail all the way to the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara to Istanbul Turkey and beyond. Since that first cruise I have been on several more cruises in the region and each one called at new and different ports than the previous ones. That is the beauty of this region there are so many different itineraries to choose from featuring different combinations of countries to visit. I find there are still many places I plan to see in the future. The Western Med Cruises are often the cruises of choice for first-time cruisers in Europe and can range from 7 to 10 or 12 days. These itineraries will usually begin in Barcelona or in Rome and visit the ports of France Spain Italy and perhaps one in North Africa. Ships on this route can also call at the islands of Sicily Sardinia or Corsica too. All of these places are absolutely steeped in history. I remember on one cruise calling at Naples and taking the tour of Pompeii. Wow It is incredible how you can understand the lifestyle of those ancient people by seeing the frozen-in-time ruins of their city. I ve since read several novels and books about Pompeii and the time when it was covered and destroyed by hot lava overflowing from Mt. Vesuvius. A cruise in this region is pretty much guaranteed to spark your interest in one or many things for the future. Of course on a cruise you cannot possibly see everything you will not have time. But I found that if I planned well I could see an awful lot in one day and I like to think of cruises as an exploration for future vacation choices. If I like somewhere well enough and want to see more then I will return and spend time there later on. What I love about the Mediterranean most of all is the normally calm waters if you travel between May and October and the wonderful contrasts of scenery from the mountains and hovering cliffs of the French Riviera and Italy s Cinque Terre to the golden sands and buildings of Malta. A cruise in this region is pretty much guaranteed to spark your interest in one or many things for the future. www.encorecruises.com o 31 I think this is why I love it so much... life is relaxed. There is no rush here. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves with simple pleasures. And then there s the food This region is the go-to playground of the rich and famous. Everywhere you go you will see fantastic yachts moored in the harbours belonging to mysterious but very wealthy people. It s easy to see why. Wherever you go whether its Monaco Barcelona Rome Florence or the picturesque clifftop village of Taormina in Sicily...it doesn t matter the Mediterranean lifestyle is the same. Sipping espresso or caf au lait in outdoor caf s having lunch of salad and tuna perhaps pasta or pizza with incredibly fresh ingredients accompanied by the best wines at affordable prices dinner al fresco too.... nothing is rushed....it has an ambience all its own. I think this is why I love it so much....life is relaxed. There is no rush here. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves with simple pleasures. And then there s the food Every time I go to the Mediterranean region I come home vowing to eat that way for the rest of my life. Fresh ingredients olive oil cheeses fresh bread fish tomatoes salads wonderful wines and the best coffee anywhere Of course once I m home the North American bad habits and fast food creep back in. But I have changed the way I eat over my lifetime considerably and I attribute part of this to my visits to the Mediterranean. I have only touched on the Western cruises. Of course there are so many more to choose from. The Eastern Med Cruises may depart from Rome Venice Athens or Istanbul. These are often for a longer duration from 10 to 14 days. These cruises have a slightly more exotic appeal. If you choose a cruise that departs from Venice you will likely visit the historic port of Dubrovnik in Croatia. It is a walled city and so charming Your cruise might also stop at Montenegro or Slovenia. And then it is on to Athens that wonderful ancient city with its fabulous new museum of civilization and ancient buildings. I love Athens I like to wander the Plaka district and find a caf for a Horiatiki salad a glass of wine and perhaps some baklava for a treat There are many tours from Athens to the surrounding areas and of Athens itself. Then it will be off to a Greek island or two perhaps the magical and spectacular Santorini or it may be Mykonos the whitewashed island of idyllic pleasures. The waters of the Greek islands afford spectacular scenery as there are so many islands large and small. The waters are calm and full of sailboats and shipping of all kinds. Greece is a seafaring nation after all. And then it is northwards up to Istanbul and possibly other Turkish ports such as Kusadasi a lovely seaside town where you can take tours to the magnificent Ephesus the remains of the ancient civilization. Istanbul itself is magnificent. What a place Sitting at the crossroads of West and East this city is named in all the history books. Formerly Constantinople the city is home to the gorgeous Blue Mosque as well as the most vast and incredible underground bazaar. Perhaps you will buy a carpet or a silk or cashmere pashmina a leather jacket or purse. It is all here. When you are in need of a break you can try Bubble Tea and some excellent Turkish pastries or Turkish Delight. Depending on which cruise line you choose many ships spend two days in Istanbul because there is so much to see. The approach into Istanbul is fantastic as the channel of the Dardenelles is narrow so there is a lot to look at along the way. And when you come into Istanbul itself you can see the cupolas of the mosques and depending on the time of day you can hear the melodic call to prayer when you are in port. Make the most of your time here your ship will offer comprehensive tours and of course free time at the bazaar. One of the most memorable ports I ve been to on a Med cruise was Malta.....I was completely surprised at the contrast to Europe and the other countries. Sailing into Malta you see a large walled port made from the local stone and all of it has a yellow golden hue reminiscent of desert sands. When the sun is shining on it it is quite spectacular and exotic. Malta has a fascinating history and an island tour will ensure you get the whole story. There will be plenty of time to then relax at an outdoor caf (clearly this is a theme ) and enjoy a strong coffee or a beer before you return to the ship. Since my first cruise with my boys the options for cruising in the Mediterranean region have increased in leaps and bounds. Many many cruise lines now sail in the region each summer. You will have your choice of ships larger and smaller and depending on who is travelling with you be sure to select a ship that caters to your preferences. It is a great way to introduce your children to Europe when they are old enough to be interested in some of the history and sights of this region. Many cruise lines cater to tweens and teens and they will have a wonderful time and meet many new friends from around the world. The wonderful thing about exploring the countries of the Mediterranean region by ship rather than by coach or car is that you unpack when you get on board and you come back each night to your comfortable stateroom.....or suite.... if you are treating yourself I cannot think of a better holiday and I hope to do it many more times. In the Caribbean you have two main choices Eastern Caribbean or Western Caribbean. (There s also Southern Caribbean if you are departing from San Juan Puerto Rico.) You may not think there s much difference but you d be mistaken. A 7-day cruise on a Western or Eastern itinerary will determine both your departure port options and also how many ports of call you are likely to visit. It will also determine whether you will be visiting Mexico and Central America or strictly the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. Miami Fort Lauderdale EAST o 40 St. Maarten San Juan EASTERN CARIBBEAN Farther south there are the U.S. Virgin islands St. Thomas and St. John famous for great duty free shopping including jewellery perfumes leather goods and crystal. On an Eastern Caribbean itinerary there are many different islands you may visit depending on the ship the length of your cruise and which cruise line you select. Many itineraries will include the Bahamas where you may visit Nassau with its famous Straw Market casinos and beautiful Paradise Island. Or you might call at Freeport where you can visit the casino or the white sand beaches or go shopping for duty free and local items. You will visit the continent in summer when you can readily see all of its wildlife including seals penguins and whales Antarctica is the planet s last untouched continent and you can now experience it from one of the most advanced expedition ships ever built with Hurtigruten the Norwegian cruise company. And what a fantastichistory this company has. When you read it you will have no trouble putting your trust in them to take you on such a rare expedition. For more than 115 years Hurtigruten has been part of the rugged coastal areas of Norway. With a great deal of experience in polar areas the company has become an international travel company with a unique product. Over a hundred years ago when a seasoned Norwegian sea captain called Richard With proposed a regular steam ship service to link northern and southern Norway many saw it as unrealistic. Originally intended as a weekly daylight service from Trondheim to Hammerfest delivering mail cargo and passengers this audacious mariner then proposed to extend the service to travel both day and night winter and summer. His intention was to sail through waters that at this juncture had still not been mapped through a landscape that for centuries had only been accessible from the sea. REAL PENGUINS... For 90 years the Coastal Express became the most important communication link between the north and south and it is from these pioneering voyages that the Hurtigruten tradition stems. It is this heritage and experience that marks out Hurtigruten as one of the most professional and proficient expedition voyage operations anywhere. The latter years of the 20th century saw Hurtigruten s role change as cars became more popular and the ship s original remit changed. New ships were built with passenger comfort in mind with more cabins and panoramic lounges being included to accommodate a new kind of traveller. A new generation of ships was built between 1993 and 2007 ensuring that today the company has a fleet of custom-designed vessels capable of safely negotiating not only the rugged coastal waters of Norway and the Arctic but also the remote lands of Spitsbergen and Greenland and the southern oceans off Antarctica. The fantastic Antarctica voyage will take you through the Drake Passage escorted by albatrosses and storm petrels before arriving at the magical white landscape. www.encorecruises.com o 52 W The first couple of days will be spent in the Drake Passage named after Sir Francis Drake. This stretch of water between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula has numerous myths and legends connected to it. The extraordinary seaworthiness of MS Fram ensures you a safe and comfortable passage and you can join the educational lectures en route. Once the ship crosses the Antarctic Convergence you will start feeling the air getting crisper and colder. You will begin to see Antarctic penguins in the water and perhaps the first iceberg. There are no permanent human inhabitants but it is home to millions of penguins and the feeding area for thousands of whales. Words simply cannot describe the feeling of being on the Great White Continent. The ice wind and weather dictate life in Antarctica as well as the route. Every voyage is unique and the experienced crew will make all voyages an experience of a lifetime. The final choice of landings will be made in the course of the voyage. Then you will return through the Drake Passage to return to Ushuaia and then to Buenos Aires taking with you memories for a lifetime o N 66 33 S OUTH POLE ...NOT PENGUIN SUITS DON T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA You will fly to Buenos Aires and if you ve never been you will want to spend a few days in this fabulous city of Evita fame.
