As I set out with great anticipation on another year s journey of bringing you news and information about our animal community and spotlighting local people who are making important and much-needed contributions I also am grieving the loss of one Sarasota Pet s most devoted supporters--my father. Dad s passing was not unexpected (he had been ill for a while) but it is heartbreaking all the same. As I have tried to meet deadlines that always seem to come much too quickly many times during the past several weeks my mind has strayed to comforting memories of moments my dad and I have shared through the years. Like many little girls I can remember dancing around the living room standing atop my father s feet and I can vividly recall the time Dad slept in a straight-backed chair by my bedside all night when at the age of 11 I had pneumonia. His faith in me--and his abiding love for our family--will be missed each and every day. This issue is dedicated to my father Fred Botha who always inspired me to do my absolute best and to never ever give up. Moving on I would like to ask a very special favor of you. The next time you visit one of our local pet businesses take your pets to the veterinarian or a doggy day care facility when you drop your pet off for a bath and groom or visit a pet-friendly restaurant please mention that you have seen the ads of these pet businesses in the pages of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet if indeed you have. It is their advertising dollars that makes the publication of the magazines possible. Most of the advertisers you ll find here are small businesses and they need reassurance that the dollars they spend on advertising in Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet --as affordable as it continues to be--is still money well spent. There have been times that I have heard that coupons have not been redeemed or not one person has responded to a special offer featured in the magazines. It is frustrating for me as the publisher and it is discouraging for our advertisers. That s right--OUR advertisers...yours and mine. Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet are after all our community pet publications. I frequently tell local business owners that if we knew what worked in advertising we all would be wealthy What I am confident will work every time--without fail--is just letting these fellow animal lovers know that you have seen their ads and that you value their contributions to Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet. Smith DVM Sarasota Veterinary Center ALTH HE LERT A Hair Loss & Mange that kills the mites quickly with just a couple of injections. In addition there is a topically applied medication that is in the same family as the injection which works in some cases with just a couple of applications. Sometimes antibiotics are needed to clear up secondary bacterial infections caused by all the scratching but that is easily accomplished as well. A second type of mange mite that is more insidious is the demodectic mange mite. Most--if not all--dogs acquire this mite from their mothers at birth. These mites live deep in the skin of dogs in a dormant stage the entire life of the pet. The demodectic mite is predominately seen in dogs although it is diagnosed on rare occasions in cats too. It is insidious because it causes hair loss very slowly and without any itching to alert the pet owner that there is an issue. Fortunately it only becomes active and causes a problem in stressed animals or those with weakened immune systems. It is mostly seen in young growing puppies and even then in only a small percentage. Growth and especially rapid growth stress the body and if a puppy also is stressed for other reasons such as poor diet an illness bullying and or moving to a new home that can give the mite the opening it needs to become active. Infection by the demodectic mite is usually first seen as a small patch of thinning hair that grows larger over a period of days. It may be in only one or two places or it may spread to multiple areas over the entire body. Left untreated it will eventually cause all of the hair to fall out and the skin will darken and succumb to secondary bacterial infections. This happens to a very small number of dogs with compromised immune systems and as a result will require monitoring and treatment their entire lives. Fortunately most puppies and even older dogs who have slightly weakened immune systems respond well to treatment and the condition never advances to what is known as generalized demodicosis. H air loss in pets can have many causes. It can present as areas of thinning hair or outright bald spots that are very noticeable. An examination by a veterinarian is needed to determine which of the many causes is to blame and to begin proper treatment in order to resolve the problem. Living in Florida we are all familiar with allergies and how they can cause skin problems. Today I will discuss a less frequent but still common cause of hair loss mange mites. There are two common and very different types of mange mites that both cause hair loss. The one that most people think of when they hear the word mange is the sarcoptic mange mite also known as red mange. The condition has earned this name because the intense itching it causes results in hair loss and red skin from constant scratching. Sarcoptic mange is perhaps best known because it also is very contagious even among people. For the purposes of this article however I will Dr. David T. Smith Sarasota Veterinary Center. Photo by Keith Millard Because the mite is deep in the skin and advances slowly it takes several months of treatment before it returns to the dormant stage. Treatments include weekly topical dips daily oral medications and my personal favorite weekly injections. Each of the two most common oral medications have a drawback. One is very expensive and the other while quite reasonably priced is dangerous to administer. It is made for cattle that weigh upwards of a thousand pounds and to dose it for a tiny puppy or even an adult dog is dangerous with a razor-thin margin of error. The injection is similar but is given by a veterinarian in a clinic setting once a week which is much safer. Since puppies are seen by a veterinarian every few weeks for the first few months of their life demodectic mange mites are generally diagnosed early and respond quickly to treatment. If your pet is experiencing hair loss please make an appointment with your veterinarian to have it checked out as soon as possible. Dr. David T. Smith has been a veterinarian in Florida for 26 years. His practice is the Sarasota Veterinary Center on Cattlemen Road south of Bee Ridge Road and next to Burlington Coat Factory. Photo 123rf.com Allyson Kitts focus the discussion on how this type of mange affects dogs and cats. Fortunately sacrcoptic mange is easily treated and the mites are very susceptible to several different treatments. There are special dips that existed as the only type of treatment for many years and they are still effective. They do have side effects that are of special concern in young puppies and some of the treatments can be deadly if given to cats. They are not used as much anymore because of a newer medicine that was originally used in cattle 8 February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet The Doggy Diva Show Join Hosts Sophia the Doggy Diva and Susan Marie The Show for Animal Lovers Every Saturday Morning at 11 00 am on Pet Doors for House Doors Walls Patio Doors & More Save Sales & Installation Since 1985 WTMY AM 1280 www.thedoggydiva.com email doggydivashow aol.com www.facebook.com SophiatheDoggyDiva Sarasota s New Premier Grooming Spa & Pet Boutique Sizes from Cat to Great Dane Money Save Time Sleep Save Y our G RO LA Grooming Expires 3 31 13 For New Clients Only OM 5 OFF RG E Stop By & Shop Our Full Line of Foods Treats Toys Apparel & Accessories for Your Pups Love Y our In Save Y our Carpets Drapes Pet &S A la Carte Services MA LL D Custom Spa Packages No-Cage Heat Drying Mud Baths FURminator Shed-Less Treatment We Proudly Use Only the Finest All-Natural Grooming Products to Truly Pamper Your Pets Serving Manatee & Sarasota 4523 30th Street West Bradenton (Just south of Cortez Rd.) If conventional treatments are not working and they don t have support from their doctor about alternative treatments it is tempting to just self-diagnose and treat. Often the thought behind this is If a product is labeled holistic or natural it must be better and do less harm than conventional medications. In evaluating seemingly conflicting choices and treatment options it is useful to take a broader view. If you have bladder cancer for example you might need surgery--going to an acupuncturist will help support your immune system--it probably won t cure your cancer. Treatments especially in chronic illness must be tailored for the individual patient with what is appropriate for the condition. One size does not fit all and one remedy or treatment is not the only answer. wealth of information is suddenly at your fingertips. You could find some good medical advice or you could discover that your fatigue is caused by either a viral infection or too much exercise. Much of this information can be inaccurate and misleading. Online people sell propriety products meaning you can t see all the ingredients listed and they promise miracle cures. They offer glowing testimonials from real people. The truth is that we don t know if these claims are true. What s more the products could be dangerous. Can the Internet Help You Find Treatment for Your Pet The Searching for Miracles What Lurks on the Internet When people Google or search online for a disease or a set of symptoms a Certainly some of these online products are useful. But often we see in our practice people who dose their animal companions with one or multiple herbal remedies and nutritional products looking for these miracle cures. At best they are wasting money at worst they are not getting care that may be crucial to a favorable outcome. One example of this was a female middle-aged Dachshund named Lucy who came to us with diabetes a heart condition and arthritis. The owner had started an herbal extract that she found online for the heart condition. According to the pet owner it was working well except she was having trouble controlling her dog s blood Dr. Jaime Gonzalez Bear Creek Veterinary Alternatives sugar levels. After review of the medications we found that the herbal extract had an alcohol base. Alcohol sugars adversely affected the insulin levels putting the animal at risk for a crisis. A more compatible herbal remedy was chosen along with a more natural diet and an arthritis support supplement. Now Lucy requires less insulin and is feeling great. The Quest for Optimal Healing Anyone who truly views holistic care as an attempt to restore wellness will address the underlying causes of illness. The nutritional status of the patient emotional stress environmental factors and toxins allergies vaccination history and genetics are all factors in acute or chronic illness. All must be considered in choosing treatment options. This is when a holistic medicine approach can help clients make informed decisions. Holistic care gives the body an opportunity to heal itself when given the right conditions. This means a careful evaluation of diagnostics history and an examination that includes prescribing the appropriate medications. Seeing smelling and touching an animal gives accurate 10 February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet clues that no lay person or medical symptom algorithm can match. Medical training experience and emotional neutrality combined with empathy for owners and pets give doctors the ability to look at symptoms and the animals condition and make determinations. A doctor who can look at the big picture and at short and long-term goals and who has experience and the open-mindedness to choose different modalities of medicine and offer guidance and advice is invaluable. No health information online should ever be a substitute for this kind of veterinary care. In another one of our recent cases a Newfoundland named Charlie came to us with severe skin issues. He had seen specialists for MRSA and his condition had worsened over the last year. He was depressed lethargic and his skin looked like an elephant with hair loss. He suffered from itching and he had a pungent smell. The owner had purchased many cr mes herbs and homeopathic remedies online that she used without much success. We updated his blood work conducted thyroid and allergy testing and developed a treatment plan. A combination of modalities was used including Chinese herbs Western herbs thyroid replacement Glandulars and Homeopathy. He began to respond immediately and in the last 60 days his fur has grown back and the itching and smell have disappeared. Charlie runs and plays with his toys again and his owner couldn t be happier with his progress. Integrative Medicine Holistic healing is not just about using a certain set of treatment modalities like acupuncture or herbs versus conventional methods such as antibiotics or steroids. Using diagnostic tests and developing a multi-level treatment plan is crucial for success. Holistic care strives to be natural but when you need an antibiotic that s what you need. It s just not the only long-term option. Without a doubt the Internet is a great tool for gathering information. Use it wisely and as a springboard for starting a dialogue with your veterinarian. Being informed and asking questions are a great start for getting good quality care and becoming an involved partner in your pet s care. Rill Jr. VMD University Animal Clinic M ost of our companion dogs and cats are medically considered seniors when they reach their seventh (7th) birthday. Actually giant breeds are seniors by age 6 and toy breeds achieve senior status by 8 or 9 years of age. Even though we may not notice any slowing or aging changes in our pets this is the milestone birthday where our focus as pet owners needs to be modified. vocally complain or outwardly evidence pain or discomfort. But if your pet becomes hesitant in his or her normal activities such as negotiating steps jumping or reducing walks or play periods he or she may be experiencing underlying arthritis. Pets tend to hide and adapt to chronic sources of irritation. Diagnosing and addressing these issues can offer our pets happier and more active lives. Dental Dilemmas Weight Matters The first important issue is weight and body score. Entering the senior years with excess weight can produce and aggravate degenerative joint disease (arthritis). Heavy pets eventually become more sluggish and tend to gain additional pounds and muscle atrophy. This results in reduced mobility and activity and possible chronic skin lesions. Most quality senior diet formulas are structured to provide additional fiber for lower gastrointestinal health and controlled calories for less active lifestyles. Consequently gradual conversion to a senior diet and maintaining optimum body weight is a good health investment. Most pets entering this life stage do not Another big issue for aging pets is dental health. Pets can gnaw on a hard chew and crush kibble foods even with severe dental disease or a tooth abscess. DO NOT be fooled that this indicates good oral health. Dental and gum disease is a two-fold issue. The first concern is periodontal disease that causes bacterial infection to not only spread to major tooth roots but more importantly to spread systemically to the kidneys liver and heart valves. Many chronic valvular disease cases are a direct result of dental disease. The second issue involves pet comfort. Again pets adapt and accept oral discomfort. When this is altered many pets show an immediate improvement in attitude activity and overall vitality. Dr. Robert W. Rill Jr. of University Animal Clinic. Photo courtesy of University Animal Clinic a complete urinalysis. These tests monitor organ function reveal signs of impending or chronic conditions and help to promote safe use of all of the pharmaceuticals a pet may be receiving. Many veterinarians are now offering economical extended senior scans to include either radiographs (X-rays) or ultrasound scans of the chest and abdominal cavities. In fact many cancers (tumors) heart disease or vascular abnormalities and organ diseases can only be determined through these advanced studies. The ultimate goal for our senior pets is to provide the best quality of life in comfort for as long as possible. Investment in diagnostics can pay big dividends in early detection treatment and prevention. The one year of a person s life equating to seven years of a pet s life is not a good linear comparison. This is why it is recommended that seniors receive a complete physical examination twice yearly to uncover any new issues and monitor any chronic conditions. Yearly senior lab profiles are invaluable not only for early diagnosis but also as an opportunity for disease prevention. Most lab profiles include a complete blood count a serum chemistry and an organ function panel as well as a thyroid profile and 14 February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Agility--The Power of Two The Story of Diesel & Heidi By Hera & COZ OceanWolf Agility D iesel may be the name of a slow-burning fuel oil but a dog from Port St. Lucie Florida named Diesel is a highoctane performer. A Beagle Boxer Terrier mix Diesel excels at agility and is a frequent competitor at the Manatee County Fairgrounds in Palmetto Florida. His full name is Diesel the Weasel just because it suits him Photo top left Diesel easily clears an agility jump and is on the lookout for the next obstacle. Photo at right Diesel finishes off weaving through a set of twelve poles. Photo by Pix n Pages Photo below Diesel is all smiles as he exits an agility tunnel. Photo by Pix n Pages says his companion and handler Heidi Fischer who rescued him at six weeks of age from a litter headed for the humane society. Diesel weaseled his way into an agility household. Heidi first rescued a Boxer named Ozzie who she trained in obedience and then agility. Ozzie Hera and COZ was followed by Zena the Mastiff OceanWolf Agility Spike and Wilson the Cocker Spaniels and Geta the Sheltie. Although all of Heidi s dogs are accomplished Wilson has earned two American Kennel Club (AKC) Master Agility Championship (MACH) titles. When Heidi began agility with Diesel the AKC only allowed pure-bred dogs to compete. So Diesel began his agility career with the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA) and Canine Performance Events (CPE). In April 2010 the AKC began allowing mixed breed dogs to compete in companion events they sponsored. Diesel quickly moved up through the Novice and Open ranks of AKC agility into the Excellent Level. Now at age four Diesel races around the agility course at breakneck speed cornering on a dime and eliciting applause with every run. He earned his MACH title in February 2012 and qualified for the 2012 AKC National Competition in Reno Nevada but was unable to attend. Diesel also has qualified for the upcoming 2013 AKC Nationals in Tulsa Oklahoma. Most recently he competed at the prestigious AKC Invitational Tournament in Orlando Florida in December 2012 with two perfect runs. This tournament invites the top five dogs of each breed from all over the United States and 84 other countries. Diesel loves to play Frisbee otherwise says Heidi he is a serious dude. When Diesel is running an agility course and has to stop on the pause table he tries to bite the brim of Heidi s ball cap. And he eagerly looks forward to a peanut butter treat on Heidi s folding chair after each agility run. No matter what he does watching Diesel is always a gas. Steve Koch Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic anting is a rapid and marked increase in respiration. Breathing is typically shallow and characterized by open-mouthed breaths usually accompanied by protrusion of the tongue. It is seen commonly in dogs although it is unusual in cats. The dog s normal method of controlling his or her body temperature is by panting. The rapid movement of air across the tongue and through the upper respiratory tract causes water to evaporate and release heat from the body. Because of our tropical environment dogs in Florida need to pant both during the summer months and on warm days during winter. My Dog is Panting... 1. 2. P Pet owners need to be aware of the different causes of panting and how to tell them apart. To follow is a list of eight common causes of panting and some tips on telling the difference. Fear or anxiety--During the thunderstorm season panting can be very common in dogs who also will usually try to hide. They tend to be unable to stay still and will constantly be moving around the house. Pain--A dog in pain may either not move much at all or he may be constantly moving around. Dogs tend to interpret pain as a physical attack so they will be moving around in an attempt to get away from the pain. There also may be some abnormality in their movement due to the pain. Look for limping walking with the back hunched up or not being able to lie down in a normal manner. Dr. W. Steve Koch Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic a dog has a fever is to take his temperature rectally. The age-old story about a cold wet nose indicating good health in dogs doesn t really apply today. That myth started in the days when Canine Distemper--usually a fatal disease--was a common illness in dogs and one of the signs of the disease was a thick white discharge from the nose. A clear moist nose indicated the dog probably didn t have distemper and could be treated. 4. Drugs--Many drugs can change the blood chemistry in a dog leading to panting. Not all dogs however will have the same response Cortical steroids used to treat allergies can cause some dogs to pant but most will not show any change in breathing. 5. 3. Fever--With a fever the panting will be constant even when the dog is lying down. The normal temperature of the dog is 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit compared to 98 degrees Fahrenheit in humans. Because of the difference in temperature the dog will always feel a little warm to your touch so the best way to determine if 18 Overheating--Being outdoors in stifling hot weather or engaging in strenuous exercise in hot weather can cause overheating. This is probably the most common cause of panting in Florida. Taking the dog s rectal temperature will tell you if your dog s temperature is elevated. If the dog has not been outside or exercising then this is not likely the cause. 6. Disease of the central nervous system--Dogs may begin panting when they suffer from central nervous system disease that affects the respiratory center which may be indicated when a dog experiences a seizure. At left While dogs may pant for a variety of reasons it can be symptomatic of a variety of serious conditions that require the diagnostic expertise of a veterinarian. Photo BigStockPhoto.com John McAllister February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet If you come home and find your dog is suddenly panting look for either pools of urine or stool on the floor. These kind of accidents can happen if your dog has had a seizure. Animal Eye Care Inc. Diseases and Surgery of the Eye 7. 8. Heart or Pulmonary Disease--Dogs with heart or pulmonary disease may experience panting as they try to breathe in more oxygen. Many times a dog will contract its abdominal muscles to try and force more air through the lungs. Ascites or fluid in the abdominal cavity--When a dog suffers from ascites or fluid in the abdominal cavity his abdomen is usually swollen and the dog is usually reluctant to lie down because it puts more pressure on the diaphragm. This also can lead to excessive panting. Keep in mind that it takes both skill and experience to correctly determine and diagnose what is causing panting in your dog. While I was in veterinary school a very wise professor of mine once told me Don t expect your patients to follow the rules because they have not read the textbooks. In other words consult a veterinarian who can help you identify the cause of your dog s panting and recommend appropriate treatment. Territoriality--Some animals just do not want to share. This behavior can spring from a troubled past (for example previously abused animals) or may be due to an inherently more dominant personality type. Aggressively protective behaviors may be seen with food toys areas of the house or even with owners. Species--Communication is different between dogs than it is between cats. Both dogs and cats have their own set of communicative signals and social manners which may be misunderstood by the other species. For example a cat may be offended by a boisterous dog who invades his space or sniffs his hind end. In turn the cat s warning body language (ears back tail swooshing hissing) might not be understood by a friendly dog until the cat scratches or bites. Disease--If your new pet has received appropriate routine medical care then it is much less likely that he will carry infectious diseases. However if there are any signs of illness it may complicate interactions between the housemates. Even if it doesn t affect their social behavior some separation between the pets initially will be necessary to prevent the spread of anything contagious. Understanding how conflicts may arise will help you to anticipate potential problems. The next consideration is how to actually introduce the pets to one another. Remember that introductions should always be slow and supervised. Try using partial barriers first which will allow the animals to become familiar with one another but to acclimate slowly so that it is not such a sudden shock when they finally meet face to face. Some techniques can include Different rooms--Place pets on each side of a door where they can hear and smell each other but still have their own space. A glass door also can be used so that pets can see each other prior to interacting with one another. In both T he adoption of a new pet can be a very exciting and rewarding adventure leading to lifelong friendships. However if there are other pets already living in the home the initial introduction of a new pet can often be a time of turbulence. Conflicts between animals may be surprising to human beings. Understanding a little bit about the social habits of dogs and cats can help to reduce some of the confusion and allow us to empathize with our pets as we help them to adjust to new circumstances. Some situations from which difficulties may arise include Age--Often a young dog or cat is adopted into a household where a middleaged or older pet already lives causing a drastic change in the daily routine of the older pet. Overly rambunctious play behavior may annoy or even accidentally injure the older companion. Personalities--Individual pets especially dogs demonstrate a high degree of variation in dominant or submissive behaviors. These natural group roles help to maintain balance and prevent conflicts as an unwritten social code. However conflict can arise as new individuals in the group try to establish Dr. Tamara Powell VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital of these situations you can gauge their initial reactions to one another to get an idea of how things are going to go. A baby gate also can be used to facilitate introductions between small dogs. Objects--Before the pets are officially introduced it may help to exchange toys or blankets between rooms so that they become used to each other s scent. Always keep safety in mind. While most pets will be able to accept new housemates in time it is possible that fights may occur even with animals that have never shown aggressive behaviors before. Try to remove any potentially aggravating factors. For example if one pet is food aggressive feed the animals in separate rooms so they cannot see each other eating. Try to maintain a calm quiet environment for introductions and be sure that the animals are always supervised until they consistently interact well with one another. The Karasu or crow is an interesting older variety with fins and a body in matte black and an orange or white underbelly. The most popular black variety is the Kumonryu or dragon fish. The Kumonryu got its name from the mythical dragons in Oriental paintings. Suminagashi have black scales that appear to have white edges and the Matsukawabake s pattern and color change from one season to the next with some becoming all white or all black. After all there are hundreds from which to choose. Here however are three fascinating classes that include many subvarieties. Koromo Lisa Burns co-owner of Backyard Getaway in Myakka City of cross breeding. New pond owners are drawn to Ogon because they grow quite large and are easy to see in the pond. Ogon can be white yellow or orange. Like many other classes there are several Koromo which means robed in Japanese is a group of fish that originated in the early 1950s from a cross breeding of male Kohaku and female Asagi. A good Koromo starts with the KUMONRYU same basics as the Kohaku with snowwhite skin and deep-red hi. It is important that the black color does not bleed into the white areas. The Koromo class is made up of several varieties including the Sumi Goromo Budo Goromo Budo Sanke Koromo Sanke Koromo Showa Doitsu Ai Goromo and Goshiki. The Goshiki is one of the most diverse in the group. Goshiki are said to be a five-color Koi with red black white light blue and dark blue. It is sometimes difficult to pick out all five colors especially when the blue and black overlap forming purple tones. To add to the confusion a Gin-Rin Goshiki with its reflective scales mirroring the skin color beneath may appear gold silver or blue gray in color. OGON varieties of Ogon including Kin Gin-Rin Ogon Doitsu Ogon and Matsuba Ogon. The Ogon has played an important role in the development of other metallic koi varieties. It s interesting to note that the colors and patterns on koi may change and continue to develop until they are at least three years old. When purchasing Koi for your pond it s critical to remember that recognizing a healthy well-shaped Koi--free of disease and parasites--is far more important than knowing the names of all the varieties. So as you lecture your pet on drinking and driving don t forget to caution about raw dough and skateboarding Q A Dr. Reinhart my son steals unbaked dough from my kitchen as I am baking and he gives the dough to my Cocker Spaniel. I have warned him of problems that this could cause but he continues to ignore my warnings. I am sure this is unhealthy for my dog but I do not know what symptoms to look for. Can you help --Cindy Well Cindy I just recently reviewed a report from the Poison Control Center about poisons in your kitchen and what you have asked is rapidly becoming one the most called-about toxins that pets consume. You see the problem is not the dough but what it is transformed into after ingestion...alcohol Yes that s right--alcohol intoxication is becoming a large problem in the pet community and the reason is not only unbaked bread and cookie dough but also hand sanitizers not beer and gin. The yeast cultivates the ingredients forming an alcohol metabolite and then intoxication begins. Lethargy instability low blood sugar and seizures can result. The inebriation experienced by pets even can progress to respiratory failure and death Equally as fatal is the potential for bloat obstruction and the lethal gastric torsion. Q A Dr. Reinart my small dog continues to chew everything in sight. Besides the fact that he is ruining my house I am concerned he will kill himself. What can I do --Karen Yes Karen your fears are well founded. I recently lost two cases in which the pets had ingested household items that could be classified as foreign bodies. In the first case a dog got into the trash and ate bones from meat that had been thrown away after dinner. In the second case a cat that had a hair ball in its stomach developed further complications by a small bumper that fell off the bottom of a laptop computer. Both cases caused an obstruction at the junction between the small bowel and the ceacum. This ileal ceacal junction is the most common area for an obstruction because the dimensions of the bowel at the junction decrease so dramatically. Everything and anything your pet consumes is at risk of causing an obstruction that can be deadly. Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Symptoms that your pet may be suffering an obstruction can include loss of appetite and vomiting anything that is eaten. When an obstruction is diagnosed surgery is usually indicated. Clothing tinsel balls bones and even Christmas lights are among the household items I have had to retrieve surgically from both dogs and cats. So lock your hamper and your trash can. Boredom is usually a driving force for the need to chew so toys raw hide sticks antlers and any safe chewing distraction may help decrease your troubles. It has been over two years since we started feeding our dog your product and there has not been a tick on the animal ever since. Just recently we had a friend from Toronto visit us. His dog and ours meandered outside for an hour or so. When the dogs returned our friend s pet was loaded with ticks while our dog never had a one. You were so right when you told us that the product keeps ticks away. Deb Aloe 4 Pets is a lifesaver. I began using the product on my pets last week and I already am noticing a difference. They are growing fur back and their energy levels are great I have two happy little pups again Thank you Aloe 4 Pets. As the owners of Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory one of the most frequently asked questions we hear is What are my options regarding cremation or burial once my pet has passed It is from this often-repeated question that we find it paramount to educate pet owners about the choices available when it is time to prepare for the final disposition of their pets. Although not exactly a pleasant topic for discussion pet owners should briefly think about the day when their pets will no longer be with them. This can be prompted by their own pet s gradual aging process or perhaps an acquaintance neighbor or family member has just lost his or her pet. Unless one has experienced the loss of a pet he or she may not be aware of the options available. When planning ahead there are actually three options from which to choose communal cremation private cremation and burial. Deciding what s best for you should be done strictly on an individual basis and not based on what someone else thinks is best for you. This is important because the loss of a cherished and beloved pet is one of the most heartbreaking events animal lovers may experience in their lifetimes. In some instances pet loss may be more emotional than losing a human companion or friend. Choosing what brings peace and comfort matters most and as a pet owner you should never be concerned that what you choose for the final disposition of your pet may or may not be one of the standard or more conventional ways. Barbara Bounds Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory Exploring the Options Generally speaking a communal cremation is the cremation of multiple pets at one time. When the cremation process is complete all the cremains (cremated remains) of the pets are gathered by Belspur Oaks and buried on private property. Consequently there are no cremains given back to the pet owner. Private cremation is the individual cremation of the pet with the cremated remains ultimately returned to the pet owner. During this process only one pet is cremated at a time and there is absolutely no co-mingling of cremains with those of other animals at any time during the cremation. How can a pet owner be assured that they only are receiving the cremains of his or her pet back Belspur Oaks uses a three-step identification process that begins from the pet s transfer from either the veterinary clinic or the pet owner s home. This identification process which guarantees that the privately cremated remains belong to an individual pet owner. stays with the animal the entire journey--from its origin to its destination back into the hands of the pet owner. Typically with a private cremation the pet owner can expect Belspur Oaks to place the cremains in a sealed plastic bag which in turn is placed in a hand- carved wooden urn. Also included is a copy of the poem titled The Rainbow Bridge a cremation certificate and a grief brochure to help pet owners deal with the loss of a pet. All of these items are then returned to the pet owner in a velvet memorial bag. The advantage of having your pet privately cremated is that you will forever have the cremains of your pet with you. We live in a transient society. With this in mind if you should no longer live at your current place of residence you can take your pet s remains with you. Without going into too much detail a private cremation eliminates a lot of what if questions the pet owner would endure down the road. The other benefit to having your pet s cremains with you is that you can decide at a later date whether or not you would like to have them buried with you or someplace else. The cremains also could be scattered divided among family members in separate urns or placed in a piece of keepsake jewelry. Of all the options available a private cremation usually is the best option for most pet owners. Lastly one can consider burial. Choosing burial however has very few advantages. Locally the county frowns upon the burial of a pet in one s backyard. The concern usually emanates from disease control and whether the burial will take place in an area that will not be disturbed at a later date by either human or animal. An example of this would be property that is later sold and residential or commercial rebuilding takes place which could pos- 36 February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet sibly disturb the final resting place of the pet. The pet cemetery business is not immune from land resale either. We personally witnessed this during the building boom in 2000 when several pet cemetery businesses in Florida sold their land to developers and then contacted pet owners to come and retrieve the buried remains of the pet(s). Therefore we strongly urge pet owners to ponder this option carefully. Some families have acreage on which they can choose to bury their pets. In this type of situation the land is vast in size has been family owned for many years and consequently is considered safe and free from any disturbance in the foreseeable future. For quite a few of our pet owners this has been the choice for their pets final resting places. Due to the tough economic times we have experienced during the last several years Belspur Oaks understands that for some choosing the final disposition of one s pet can be difficult especially when facing financial constraints. We will not judge any pet owner for the option he or she chooses for his or her pet s remains. However we strongly recommend that the pet owner consider how a few dollars spent wisely in the end can prevent them from experiencing a future event that may reopen the feelings of grief and loss of their cherished and beloved pet. For 24 years Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory has been serving the veterinary and animal community on Florida s Gulf Coast by providing dignified after-care services that include pet cremations grief resources and personalized pet products. Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory is moving to a new larger facility in late winter or early spring. The new building is located at 2122 Whitfield Park Avenue in Sarasota. Botha publisher often has been said that some of the world s most innovative ideas and inventions historically have been inspired during periods of economic upheaval. How often have we heard the clich When the going gets tough the tough get going Or perhaps the late Walt Disney said it best You may not realize it when it happens but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you. Mary Lynne Bianchi and John Fellows of Cape Coral Florida will attest to the fact that life-changing triumphs can happen even when the highway to success suddenly becomes littered with bumper-to-bumper roadblocks. As the founders of Petmopolitan Pet Food a flourishing line of all-natural all-fresh and all human-grade pet food and treats for dogs and cats John and Mary Lynne--like many business executives in the country--were caught off-guard when the job market began to crumble several years ago. Blessed with both drive and It ambition however they pooled their talents and resources to create their own signature blends of hand-crafted pet foods that are chemical free nutrient rich unrivaled in quality and made only with the freshest ingredients. In lieu of setting up a storefront Mary Lynne and John have chosen instead to meet and greet customers and their pets Saturday mornings at their own booth at the Sarasota Farmers Market in downtown Sarasota. It takes more than just passion and commitment to leave home at 4 00 a.m. to travel 60-plus miles every Saturday morning. It takes a true entrepreneurial spirit and a clear vision for the future. Hailing from New Hampshire John always has been an entrepreneur at heart. A self-confessed risk taker he spearheaded the start up of nine businesses--including an advertising agency and an event-management company--before partnering with Mary Lynne to launch Petmopolitan Pet Food. John also is an outdoor adventurer. His resume includes an impressive tenure as a Federal Aviation Administration Certified Flight Instructor with more than 3 500 flight hours to his credit. He also has cycled across the continental United States to raise thousands of dollars in a fund-raising effort for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and he holds the record as the first person to ascend to the summits of New England s 100 highest mountain peaks in just two winter seasons. Originally from Illinois Mary Lynne s background and career expertise includes 14-plus years of employment in both managerial and director-level positions in customs compliance and international trade for the global import export industry. When an opportunity to relocate to the Gulf Coast opened up in 1999 Mary Lynne made the move to Florida and worked full time as the traffic purchasing and compliance manager for Chico s FAS Inc. At the same time she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies graduating Cum Laude from Hodges University in Naples Florida. Mary Lynne it seems always has had entrepreneurial aspirations of her own. She parlayed an idea she had when studying law into iPad and iPhone applications. When I was working on my law degree I created a set of flash cards to help memorize legal terminology Mary Lynne says. Many of my fellow students asked me for sets of their own. At left Mary Lynne Bianchi and John Fellows founders of Petmopolitan Pet Food with Merry Sunshine the company s vice president of Puplick Relations and Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet s cover girl Photo by Connie Summers 40 February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet With the help of a start-up developer in the Netherlands The Language of Law is now an app for the iPad iPhone and Android. Mary Lynne adds. It makes learning legal terms enjoyable--all categorized by types of law and levels of expertise. Free trial apps are at the App Store Google Play and Amazon.com or check out www.thelanguageoflaw.com. It s no surprise that new ideas would ignite when these two independent and successful entrepreneurs met six years ago in Ft. Meyers. At the time we both had great careers and wonderful opportunities Mary Lynne recalls. In 2010 however the first roadblock appeared when Mary Lynne was unexpectedly laid off from a law firm. At the time John was helping affluent customers acquire personal aircraft which soon proved to be another industry that came to a near standstill due to the tumultuous economy. Like so many other people in their position Mary Lynne and John were forced to reinvent themselves and start anew. If someone had told me five years ago when I was selling aircraft that manufacturing pet food was in my future I would have laughed out loud John says with a smile. But as is often the case when someone has no choice but to begin again the couple discovered a new passion. And for Mary Lynne and John it was right in their own kitchen. In addition to his entrepreneurial successes and experience in the cockpit John is an avid personal chef who loves to cook. He first began experimenting with hand-crafted foods when Mary Lynne s beloved feline Elvis the Cat began having difficulty eating in his senior years. As Elvis became older he could no longer crunch on dry food because of problems with his teeth Mary Lynne remembers. We tried commercial canned food but he simply refused to eat. Our veterinarian suggested that we give Elvis mashed cooked chicken livers Mary Lynne adds and he gobbled them up During the last 30 months of Elvis s life he held the coveted role of primary taste tester for Petmopolitan Pet Food and gladly sampled many flavor variations of the new company s home made and highly nutritious foods. John is very creative in the kitchen Mary Lynne says. He is always trying to blend interesting flavors together. What clearly sets Petmopolitan Pet Food apart from commercial foods is its wholesome and healthy ingredients. We use only the freshest ingredients including organ and muscle meats whole eggs whole grains bone meal and essential green orange red blue and white fruits and vegetables John says. Blueberries. Sweet potatoes. Cranberries. Chicken. Beef. Lamb. Salmon. Pine Island Mullet. Bacon. Sardines. Gator. Brown Rice. If it s fresh nutritious and flavorful you ll find these good-foryou human-grade ingredients in Petmopolitan Pet Food. Equally important is what Petmopolitan Pet Food products do not contain. They are completely free of additives preservatives Continued on Page 42 At right from top to bottom Petmopolitan Pet Food s moist food for dogs and cats is first pasteurized then frozen to preserve freshness Petmopolitan Pet Food s dry kibble is available in both gluten-free and grain-free varieties During season Petmopolitan Pet Food sells Pet Grass which is a nutritious and chemical-free treat for dogs and cats that keeps pH levels in balance Petmopolitan Pet Food has a weekly presence on the south end of Lemon Avenue at the Sarasota Farmers Market. And there s no wheat corn or soy in the food either. The moist food is pasteurized before it is placed in containers and frozen immediately. The pasteurization process is a natural food preservative just like milk John says. Available in 10 standard blends and numerous specialty boutique blends Petmopolitan Pet Food s moist foods are exclusively made from U.S. ingredients many locally grown. We work closely with local ranchers farmers and produce vendors in order to ensure our food includes the freshest and highest quality ingredients Mary Lynne says. With the exception of the Gator meat that we bring in from Louisiana nearly all of our ingredients are farmed locally. We also use organic ingredients including rolled oats and brown rice whenever possible she adds. In our grain-free blends we use organic winter squash yams and pumpkin. Even the beef used in Petmopolitan Pet Food s products is home grown. And in keeping with its mission to provide only the highest quality ingredients all of the Central Florida beef is free range grass fed and hormone free. And the poultry used in Petmopolitan Pet Food is ABF--antibiotic free. Of course because the products are fresh they must be refrigerated but they also are freezer friendly for longer storage. Available in 8- 16- and 32-ounce containers Petmopolitan Pet Food s moist dog and cat foods can be stored unopened in the refrigerator for three weeks and in the freezer for a year. Once opened the food can be refrigerated for about a week. What s more each of Petmopolitan Pet Food s product labels display the manufacturing date so customers know just how fresh their pets food is. John who goes by the moniker Pet Chef Johnny Sunshine also has created food blends for dogs with special nutritional requirements and offers how-to classes to make your own. Some of our customers have animals with unique nutritional needs so John works with the owner and the pet s veterinarian to develop a food specifically for that pet Mary Lynne comments. Petmopolitan Pet Food also has its own line of dry kibble for dogs and cats that is specially made for the company. Available in four varieties--Chicken & Rice and Lamb & Rice which are both gluten free and Salmon & Sweet Potato and Turkey & Sweet Potato which are gluten and grain free. The kibble is sold in bags ranging in size from 1 to 40 pounds. An 8-ounce sample size also is available to introduce pets to the kibble before making a larger purchase. The kibble is rich in antioxidants which Mary Lynne says acts as a natural preservative. In addition to its moist food and kibble Petmopolitan Pet Food also offers an assortment of fresh chemical-free pet treats including a whole line of hormone-free beef bones. Our beef bones are from the same vendor that supplies the beef for our foods John says. When dogs eat the marrow from the bone s center they are getting essential nutrients their bodies require without any of the potentially toxic hormones that are found in regular beef. Of special interest are Petmopolitan Pet Food s Prime 1 Brown antlers. Naturally shed and hand gathered from moose deer and elk in Wyoming and Colorado the antlers provide essential trace minerals pets need while offering dogs a longlasting and delicious chew. Petmopolitan Pet Food also carries chemical-free Pet Grass which is a healthy blend of nutrient-rich wheat grass oat and flax. Many people aren t aware that our pets need grass as part of a healthy diet Mary Lynne says. It helps balance the body s pH levels which is especially important for cats that often tend to have unhealthy acidic pH levels that lead to the development of urinary tract crystals that cause blockages and infections. Good nutrition plays such a critical role in a companion animal s health Mary Lynne adds. I always encourage pet owners to read the labels on the foods they are giving their pets. They have to become label savvy and know what ingredients are in the food to make an informed decision. If you don t know what an ingredient is look it up. People often tell me they cannot afford to buy high-quality food for their pets Mary Lynne continues. I respond by saying If you genuinely care about your pets how can you NOT afford to feed them quality food High quality is not necessarily synonymous with high prices Mary Lynne says. It s a matter of reading and understanding the list of ingredients on the product you purchase. For dogs and cats who have transitioned to Petmopolitan Pet Food there are visible differences that pet owners will notice. First their eyes become very clear their coats are healthier and both dogs and cats will have more energy once the chemicals in processed foods have been eliminated from their diet John says. Mary Lynne and John s own dog Merry Sunshine who is the February March 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet 42 adorable Golden Retriever pup featured on the cover of this issue of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet is a testament to the difference a wholesome nutritious and chemical-free diet can make. Her eyes are bright and clear her coat is healthy and full and she has boundless energy. As the vice president of Puplick Relations for Petmopolitan Pet Food Merry Sunshine who celebrated her second birthday on Christmas Day has been with Mary Lynne and John since she was just four months old. I sent John to Lowe s with a honey-do list Mary Lynne recalls. When he got to the store there was a person in the parking lot with Golden Retriever puppies. John spotted Merry Sunshine who was platinum white in color at that age and he instantly fell in love. A four-month-old puppy definitely was not on my shopping list Mary Lynne adds with a laugh. Merry Sunshine accompanies Mary Lynne and John to the Sarasota Farmers Market every Saturday greeting customers who stop by Petmopolitan Pet Food s booth which is located on the south end of Lemon Avenue. Besides Petmopolitan Pet Food s weekly presence at the farmers market the company has a fully functional e-commerce site for the convenience of its customers. The Web site-- www.PetmopolitanPetFood.com--has quickly attracted a flourishing nationwide clientele. Some of our customers visit Florida in season and their pets really enjoy our foods Mary Lynne says. We are happy to either ship orders out of state or deliver food locally. Petmopolitan Pet Food celebrated its second anniversary in business in October 2012. Success has been undeniably steady but Mary Lynne and John are ready and eager to take the company to the next level. For Mary Lynne that includes earning her certification as a Clinical Pet Nutritionist upon completion of an intensive 500hour course that provides professional training in feline canine and equine nutrition and health. In the near future Mary Lynne and John s vision is to broaden Petmopolitan Pet Food s reach and gain greater exposure for their foods by expanding to new markets and offering their products through local and regional stores veterinary practices and animal rescue groups. We want to develop relationships with shop owners and veterinarians that recognize and understand the value of nutrition John says. To that end Mary Lynne and John are now working with Organix and The Real Juice Bar to showcase their foods at The Open Studio a co-op located at 380 Old Englewood Road in Englewood. Here customers can bring their own containers or purchase them on site and buy Petmopolitan Pet Food s kibble in bulk. The company s moist food and antlers also are available at the co-op. Another vision Mary Lynne and John share is to expand their company s offerings which also is coming to fruition with the recent launch of Petmopolitan Pet Care Products. In September 2003 due to the neglect and abandonment of 262 cats residing at a former shelter in Sarasota five concerned citizens stepped up to rescue the felines in distress. Their original mission was to provide a safe haven for the cats and to give a voice to those that had none. Relocation of the cats was an amazing display of local unity and cooperation and Cat Depot was founded. It was about opening your heart says Ken Slavin Cat Depot s cofounder. From that initial effort Cat Depot has since flourished into a state-of-the-art rescue adoption education and resource center that has become a prototype for feline-only adoption centers throughout the country. To commemorate its 10th anniversary Cat Depot is hosting an event that promises to be one of the memorable It highlights of Sarasota s social season The Forget Me Not Gala will be held Saturday February 9 at Laurel Oak Country Club located at 2700 Gary Player Boulevard in Sarasota from 6 30 to 10 30 p.m. The Presenting Sponsor for the gala is Warren Loranger. While the anniversary celebration will include an open bar and a fabulous buffet the planning committee also has pulled out all the stops to arrange for exceptional entertainment throughout the evening. Her credits including singing with the Sarasota Orchestra and starring as the guest soloist with Gloria Musicae at the Historic Asolo Theater. Taking the spotlight as the gala s featured entertainer is Tim Wilkins a standup comedian speaker writer and TV and radio personality. A 20-year veteran of the stage screen and airwaves Tim has performed in legendary venues throughout the world from Radio City Music Hall in New York City and chow halls in Afghanistan to college campuses casinos and cruise ships. Early in his career Tim was the opening act for Earth Wind and Fire which led to opening for some of music s most celebrated and legendary stars including Diana Ross Julio Iglesias Aretha Franklin Paul Anka Hall & Oates The Righteous Brothers Patti LaBelle Bob Newhart Olivia Newton-John Bob Newhart and countless others. Now the face of MOR TV in Tampa Tim also has appeared on a range of television shows and networks including HBO Fox Sports ESPN2 Nickelodeon WE Network and TLC. In addition to wowing attendees with his side-splitting comedic routine Tim also will serve as the gala s auctioneer. As is customary at Cat Depot s fundraisers there will be auctions a-plenty at the Forget-Me-Not Gala. The community has been very generous in providing auction and raffle items. Cat Depot extends a huge thank you to our community and some of the finest businesses and locations who have donated more than 30 000 in live and silent auction items and raffle prizes says Lynn Rasys Cat Depot s director of communications. Among the items included in the auctions will be blue topaz earrings and a pendant a painting by Jean ClaudePicot a family fun package in Orlando a one-week stay anywhere in the world two round-trip Jet Blue airline tickets a tropical excursion to Key West a getaway in Miami Beach a romantic weekend at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota one year of massages and a one-year YMCA family membership. While the evening s focus is on fundraising the gala also will include some very special surprises to celebrate Cat Depot s 10 years of community service. The 10-year anniversary is an amazing milestone for Cat Depot Lynn comments. And we are looking forward to 10 more successful years. This year it s all about cats she continues. Our goal now and always has been helping cats and kittens put their street lives behind them. Every penny raised at the Forget Me Not Gala directly benefits the cats and kittens in Cat Depot s care. One hundred percent of auction and raffle proceeds from the gala will pay for the medical expenses food and care for the cats Lynn says. Like all nonprofit organizations in our area the staff at Cat Depot must work hard throughout the year to raise funds to pay the ever-increasing costs of caring for our community s homeless abandoned or injured cats and kittens. All money Cat Depot receives comes exclusively from grants donations and fund-raisers. We are truly grateful to those who continue to open their hearts and support us with their time and donations Lynn says. Cat Depot also relies on the generous contributions of time and services provided by area veterinarians who are called upon to help meet the medical needs of the adoption center s residents. In 2012 21 veterinarians and veterinary specialists worked closely with Cat Depot to nurture cats and kittens back to health and prepare them for adoption. In gratitude Cat Depot will honor these respected individuals with a special presentation and commemorative awards at the gala. For a complete list of the veterinarians that will be recognized please see the sidebar on page 44. Recommended dress for the gala which is cleverly described as Guys in Ties and Girls in Pearls is cocktail attire. Tickets for the 10th anniversary gala are priced at 150 each and can be purchased by calling Cat Depot at 941-366-2404 or by visiting www.catdepot.org. If it s making headlines you ll read about it here Bark Out Loud Clothes for a Cause Opens in Sarasota s Gulf Gate Community piles of clothes from her nieces the proverbial light bulb went on and Nicole discovered her answer--she would open a secondhand boutique and donate part of the proceeds to animal rescue With a vision in mind the next step was to begin collecting donated clothes to stock the shop. I contacted people in the community and went to veterinarian Clothes for a Cause located at offices and local pet businesses and shops Nicole says. I spoke to 6541 Superior Avenue in Sarasota. All photos of the secondanyone who would listen. hand boutique by Nicole Eddy Soon clothes began pouring in. People give away amazing things Nicole says. We were bestowed with so many blessings. When her inventory reached 1 500 items Nicole began searching for a location for her new shop After spending weeks painting setting up fixtures and tagging every item Clothes for a Cause officially opened at 6541 Superior Avenue in the Gulf Gate community of Sarasota on January 2. We carry very stylish clothes and offer a unique shopping experience Nicole says with unbridled enthusiasm. The shop features a low-end section--with prices as low as 3.99 for a pair of pants--and a high-end area that includes affordably priced upscale and brand name clothes with prices ranging from 7.99 to 19.99. Here you ll also find jewelry handbags belts scarves and more all with appealing price tags. Nicole is very selective about the clothes that she features in the shop. Any items with holes or stains are given to Goodwill and those with even a hint of an odor are brought home and washed before they are sold in the shop. Nicole willingly accepts donations during store hours and also will arrange pick ups of large donations in Sarasota and Manatee counties. In gratitude each donor receives a 15 percent coupon toward his or her next purchase. Always eager to do more Nicole is in the process of building an e-commerce site to sell online and establish a global presence with hopes of growing her business internationally--and helping even more homeless or abandoned animals in need. Millions of animals don t have a chance Nicole says. Their lives are filled with pain and loneliness and then they are gone. Somebody has to put an end to this she continues. I want to make a difference to leave a legacy and create a footprint starting here in my own community. If you are not doing something to make this world a better place Nicole adds you just are not living. Located at 6541 Superior Avenue in Sarasota Clothes for a Cause is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 30 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. For more information or to arrange a donation call 941-400-6410. 51 Clothes for a Cause Proprietor Nicole Eddy Meet Nicole Eddy proprietor of Clothes for a Cause a brand new shop in Gulf Gate that sells gently used clothing jewelry and accessories as well as items for pets. What makes this shop different than the scores of other second-hand stores in Sarasota County Quite simply if you are a dog or cat lover this is the place to shop--and donate clothes you no longer wear--because Nicole is donating 10 percent of every sale to support animal rescue While Nicole always has had an interest in--and a flair for-- fashion she also has had an enduring passion for animals. Born and raised in Mansfield Massachusetts Nicole attended Northeastern University in Boston majoring in communications. While in college she worked as the manager of Contempo Casuals in downtown Boston. Following graduation Nicole visited a friend in Newport Beach California. She decided to relocate and while there she met her husband Mark Eddy who owns Eddy Marine Yacht Detail in Sarasota. Nicole and Mark lived and worked in Newport Beach for 10 years before relocating to Sarasota in 2004. About four years ago while working at a pet salon Nicole found Underdog Rescue of Florida and volunteered to become a foster parent. She eventually brought six dogs home to foster--and adopted every one Working with Underdog Rescue really opened my eyes about how many animals need homes Nicole says. With her own house filled to capacity Nicole knew there had to be another way to support animal rescue. I had to find a way to give back without adopting more dogs she says. Bear Creek Veterinary Alternatives is a holistic specialty practice located in Sarasota. Jaime Gonzalez DVM CVA is a holistic care expert and his approach to veterinary care combines 22 years of conventional emergency medicine and alternative modalities. If patients scheduling an appointment for a dental cleaning are new to Dr. Gonzalez s practice a brief exam is required to screen out possible physical limitations that might prohibit the cleaning. Credit toward the cleaning is given for those patients. A 50.00 dollar non-refundable deposit is required to hold the space. Dental cleanings for animals are typically a source of worry for pet owners. Many owners--especially those of older or chronically ill animals--fear the risks of having their pets go under anesthesia unless is it absolutely necessary. Using techniques similar to pediatric dentistry the certified dental technician examines the mouth to detect any problems and gently cleans and polishes the teeth. If problems are found that require an animal to have multiple extractions Dr. Gonzalez may refer out to a dental specialist. Animals with severe periodontal disease may not be good candidates. Removing bacteria-laden plaque and tartar is important for Bear Creek Veterinary Alternatives in Sarasota Offers Anesthesia-Free Dental Cleanings tooth health and the overall health of the body as infections to the lungs heart kidneys and liver can result when bacteria enter the bloodstream. Got a Greyhound Then you won t want to miss the Greyhound Reunion Gala hosted by Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Inc. at Sarasota Kennel Club (SKC). The annual Valentine s Day gala will be held Sunday February 10 at SKC located at 5400 Bradenton Road in Sarasota. Each year the reunion always is well attended attracting 80plus Greyhound owners and their dogs. We hold the reunion gala each year because it is an opportunity to thank the people that have adopted Greyhounds from Fast Friends and to once again see the dogs that we ve adopted together with their families comments Nancy Coffey Fast Friends founder and the reunion organizer. The afternoon gathering also is a chance for people who are interested in adopting a Greyhound to talk to other owners to discover the joys of owning these gentle dogs. Community residents that are considering adopting a Greyhound are welcome to attend the reunion gala to meet some of Fast Friends Greyhounds that are looking for forever homes. Because the party is an event to celebrate Greyhounds however attendees are asked not to bring dogs of other breeds. The afternoon festivities will begin at 1 00 p.m. with a Blessing of the Animals by Pastor Riker who will share a heartwarming message of appreciation for the love and companionship Greyhounds bring to our lives before blessing the dogs in attendance. Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Inc. at SKC Hosts Annual Valentine s Day Reunion Gala This year all attendees are asked to bring non-perishable foods that will be collected for All Faiths Food Bank. 52 And then the celebration begins Joe Bruno s Dixieland Hot Dogs will entertain attendees with toe-tapping music throughout the afternoon as old friends and new acquaintances meet mingle and enjoy the outdoor afternoon gathering. At 1 00 p.m. a scrumptious lunch prepared by Sarasota Kennel Club s Food Services will be served. Because the event also is a fund-raiser for Fast Friends there will be raffle prizes and a 50 50 drawing. All proceeds from the reunion gala will support Fast Friends future adoptions. As in years past Susan Marie of The Doggy Diva Show will host the always-popular Be My Valentine Costume Contest. Greyhounds dressed in colorful costumes will parade among the attendees as they vie for trophies in a variety of categories. Tickets for the luncheon are priced at 8.00. Stew Wagner a qualified and respected judge who is recognized by the AKC will officiate. Following the Puppy Match a Parade of Champions will be held to spotlight the top point earners in the competition. Bulldogs dressed in a variety of innovative--and often zany--costumes stroll across the field as they vie for prizes and certificates. In past years parade categories have included Best Smile Curliest Tail and Best Smooshed Face among others. Through the years the Kochs have seem many interesting and unusual costumes at the parade. Some of the most memorable include a bulldog dressed in a leather jacket wearing a helmet an eight-yearold girl dressed as Beauty accompanied by her bulldog who was dressed as the Beast a woman and her dog both in pirate costumes and two bulldogs in bride and groom attire It isn t a pet gathering without food and there will be plenty of refreshments There also will be an assortment of raffle prizes--many specifically geared to pet owners--that have been donated by local businesses. All proceeds from the parade and raffles will benefit bulldog rescue. According to Jo Ann Koch who is the co-organizer of the annual event the English Bulldog Parade typically draws 250 to 350 people each year. Most people that attend bring their bulldogs but not everyone participates in the event activities Jo Ann says. Instead they come out to meet other bulldog owners and enjoy a morning outdoors with their dogs. The event also provides an opportunity to find out more about this unique breed and learn what s involved in showing dogs Jo Ann continues. Often we have breeders that come out to the event and bring puppies. There are many qualified people in attendance that can answer questions about raising and owning a bulldog. Dr. Koch of course is considered a leading expert on the breed both locally and nationally. He is well respected for his expertise in diagnosing and treating the special medical needs of English Bulldogs. Registration for the Puppy Match and the costume contest will be held the morning of the event at 9 00 a.m. For additional information about the Bulldog Parade or for directions to the event please contact Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic by calling 941-955-0136 or visit www.tuttleanimalmedicalclinic.com.
