Heartworm doesn t only affect the lungs and heart so typical symptoms may not be present. Two recent cases came to us with neurological symptoms. A nine-month-old Pomeranian had a mass pushing against the spinal cord. When I opened the dog s neck in surgery I saw the mass which moved when I touched it. The mass turned out to be a live adult heartworm that had traveled up the spinal column. In another case a two-year-old Rottweiler mix showed severe inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain (meninges) and the brain itself which is a condition known as meningoencephalitis. This dog sadly did not survive. A heartworm had traveled to his brain where it died and pieces of the dead worm (thrombi) spread throughout the brain where they caused blockages (infarctions) in the blood vessels cutting of the blood supply to the brain. These are truly difficult cases with the loss of a pet at such a young age and from something preventable. The Pomeranian at only nine months old hosted a fullgrown heartworm which takes six months to mature. I know many people who skip doses or who believe that their indoor pet is not at risk but think how many times you have been jolted awake at night by a mosquito buzzing in your ear. Our Florida climate provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos and heartworm can spread rapidly. That s why administering monthly doses of ivermectin which prevents heartworm is so important. It also is vital to realize that the proper dose is critical. We ve seen people in our ER who have not paid enough attention to the dosage of the tablet which varies by the size of the pet. Too little may be ineffective and too much can cause poisoning. That s why you should always get a prescription from your veterinarian. At left a coin placed on a table next to a heartworm that was removed from a patient is used to show the size of the heart worm. Photo courtesy of Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC. By Dr. Anne Elisabeth Chauvet Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC eartworm is one of those perils to our pets that many people believe they understand but based on some of the cases we see in our emergency and specialty clinic your pet may not be as protected as you think. Some common misunderstandings about heartworm can lead to tragic outcomes for our canine and feline friends. Yes I said feline. Many pet owners are not aware that heartworm also can affect cats. While it is true that cats are not ideal hosts for heartworms the parasite can find a home in feline lungs where they cause irritation of the lungs and other tissues. Cats may cough wheeze and have difficulty breathing or allergic bronchitis may develop which can create serious breathing difficulties. Still our canine companions are at greatest risk. Some people mistakenly believe that fleas carry heartworm but mosquitos are the culprits. When mosquitos ingest blood from an infected animal the heartworms transform to their infectious form and spread when the mosquitos feed on another dog. Once infected larvae (microfilariae) generally travel to the lungs and lodge in the pulmonary arteries heart and large abdominal vein (posterior vena cava). Many dogs show no clinical signs of the infestation although active dogs have a tendency to tire sooner and eventually the dog will become more lethargic and also will cough and have breathing difficulties as the disease progresses. H Dr. Anne Elisabeth Chauvet Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC Heartworm is diagnosed by blood tests and if the result is positive chest x-rays and possibly an echocardiogram or MRI which are the next steps to determine whether the heart lungs or other areas are affected. Prior to treatment kidney and liver disease must be ruled out as they can affect the dog s options. Several modes of treatment are available and your veterinarian will recommend the best one for your pet. Medications like melarsomine and ivermectin may be administered to kill adult heartworms and larvae. Because dead heartworms break up and may block arteries which can be very serious--even fatal--it is important to restrict the pet s activities for six weeks after treatment. As you may imagine all of this treatment is costly--financially and emotionally and it is absolutely preventable. Not treating your dog is taking a risk and is it really worth it Dr. Anne Chauvet is a veterinary neurologist and founder of Critical Care and Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota and Veterinary Neuro Services 4937 S. Smith DVM Sarasota Veterinary Center for Your Pet L eaving a family pet at a boarding facility is a big decision and there are many factors to consider before choosing whom you trust to care for your loved one in your absence. Many people make the mistake of projecting their own guilt about having to leave their pet and do not consider the factors that will have the most impact as far as stress and health issues for the animal taken away from its owners and familiar surroundings. There are many choices in boarding facilities available including places with areas for dogs to play together and those where the pets receive lots of people attention but do not come into contact with other pets. To narrow down the choices think first of what your pet s normal daily life is like. If you often take your dog to a park or elsewhere to play with other dogs then he or she might enjoy that type of setting. On the other hand if your pet only interacts with people and is not used to other dogs then it would be a nightmare to be left in a strange place without you his owner and with a bunch of strange animals sniffing and potentially bullying him. Some people make the mistake of leaving a pet not used to other animals in just such a place because they do not want their pet in a cage. What they fail to realize is that the pet s own private space (i.e. the cage) can give him or her a sense of security. Also even in the places that have play yards the pets are usually housed in cages when they are not outdoors. Once the decision has been made which type of place to choose the next step is to arrange a visit to tour the facility and to ask questions about supervision feeding bathing and how potential illnesses or emergencies are handled. Supervision is especially important in places that allow animals to play together. Playtime should only be under the watchful eyes of qualified attendants much like the playgrounds at your child s school where there is always one or more teachers on site to make sure everyone gets along and to immediately handle any problems that arise. In selecting a facility find out if you can bring your pet s own food and if the staff will feed your pet on the schedule you follow at home. The same holds true for medicines supplements and treats that are a part of your pet s daily routine. If food is provided by the facility make sure it is a bland diet that will not cause any digestive upset. Neither dogs nor cats handle sudden changes of diet well especially if they are already a little stressed by being in an unfamiliar place. If you are boarding a cat you will want to choose a facility that has a quiet area exclusively for felines. It should be a comfortable place in which the staff will spend time giving the cat TLC several times a day and also is diligent about cleaning the litter box promptly as well. Ask how often your pet will be walked or otherwise get exercise and whether he or she will be exposed to any other animals. This is very important for dogs that are not used to being around other animals. You will want your pets to get lots of attention from the staff but to minimize stress and avoid potential bites and scratches your pet should not be walked with--or left with--other pets at any time. Cleanliness should be obvious on a tour of the facility but you also can ask how often the pet areas are cleaned (hopefully every time your pet goes potty so that nothing is left on the floor to leave soiled areas or odors). Also ask if pets are cleaned or bathed if they do have accidents and soil themselves. When in new or unfamiliar surroundings some pets may develop upset stomachs due to stress and as a result have diarrhea that will require cleaning or a bath. This condition also requires special dietary attention. If digestive issues persist medical attention may be needed. This should not be an issue if you are boarding Choosing a boarding facility is an important decision that requires careful evaluation in order to find caring people you can trust. Photo BigStock.com Erik Lam Dr. David T. Smith Sarasota Veterinary Center. Photo by Keith Millard your pet at a veterinary facility but it is still a good idea to ask what the policy is for treating boarded animals. If you are considering a non-veterinary boarding facility ask if the staff has a relationship with a veterinary office for treatment if needed or if they are willing to contact and even transport your pet to your own veterinarian. Once you make the initial decision to choose either an open playtime environment or a more controlled environment where your pet will only have contact and TLC with people the rest is basically common sense but hopefully this article helps you to ask the right questions. If you use a boarding facility regularly your pet may become more comfortable with the staff and surroundings and it will not be stressful at all. A good sign that you have picked the right place to board your pet is how he or she acts when you both walk in the front door. If your pet s tail is wagging and he or she walks away readily with a staff member that is friendly and knows your pet s name chances are you have picked the right place. Dr. David T. Also include a list of any medical conditions current medications or special diet requirements should an emergency occur during travel. S ummer will soon be upon us and schools will recess until fall. Many families plan their trips and vacations during this time and often include their pets when they travel. Planning for your pet s travel experience in advance not will only add to the overall enjoyment for the entire family but also avoid any frustrations. In general every traveling pet should have identification. A microchip is now inexpensive and preferred. At the very least a collar or harness ID with displayed rabies tag is recommended. In the unlikely event of a vehicle accident pets may become disoriented and escape from their crates or vehicles into non-familiar surroundings and flee. International & Air Travel Prior to international or airplane travel with your pets contact the airlines the consulate of the foreign country you intend to visit and your veterinarian as requirements vary and frequently change. The process can take six to nine months for international destinations and require a Pet Passport as well as a official health certificate and other documentation. Dr. Robert W. Rill Jr. of University Animal Clinic. Photo courtesy of University Animal Clinic severe injury to a pet. There is a reason people wear seat belts--your pet if not crated should have a safety harness too. Every two to three hours a pet needs a break to eliminate and stretch his or her legs. This also is a good time to offer your pet a small snack or treat. Always give your pet his or her normal foods and treats to prevent gastrointestinal issues that may spoil an outing. A short break provides an opportunity for reassurance and attention for your pet. If exercising your pet on a leash or harness at a rest stop choose the most remote area where other previous pets have not eliminated to avoid parasite or disease contact. Flea and tick prevention also is a good idea for any pet travel. Never let your dog travel in a car with his or her head hanging out of an open window. Dogs have less sensitive corneas than people and can suffer ocular damage from even tiny wind-blown objects. Even if your pet is in a safety harness lock all the doors and window controls to prevent any inadvertent openings by your pet s busy paws. If your pet is anxious excessively vocal or has experienced motion sickness during past excursions ask your veterinarian for advice and options to make the trip more comfortable and enjoyable for the entire family. Food for Thought To minimize episodes of low blood sugar and travel nausea pets--especially young or toy breeds--should not travel on an empty stomach. Feeding a small amount of food one to two hours before travel time will reduce these potential issues. Always offer your pet clean moderate amounts of water during stops and lay overs (Bottled water and a collapsible water bowl both work well.). Wait until the day s travel is over or you arrive at your final destination to give your pet his or her regular feeding after a short period of acclimation to the new environment. If your pet is on a special diet or formula not readily available plan to pack more than the anticipated amount. Travel Tips you Auto Know When traveling by car consider these safety tips If your pet is crated or contained in any type of enclosure (i.e. a bird cage aquarium etc.) make sure it is securely strapped to prevent sliding or overturning. Padding or blankets help provide security by tactile contact. Good ventilation of any enclosure and keeping temperatures on the cool side can help reduce anxiety and motion sickness. Never let a pet wander around a vehicle. This can cause a distraction for the driver and an accident or 10 April May 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet A Word About Pet Meds If your pet is currently receiving any medications or treatments take an extra supply during your travels in case of an unexpected delay. It s important to note that veterinary prescription medications CANNOT be refilled if you do not have a current relationship with a veterinarian. This could result in an office visit to establish a relationship and possible testing before a new veterinarian feels comfortable issuing a prescription. Veterinarians also CANNOT fill or refill another veterinarian s prescription because they are NOT licensed individually as a pharmacy (This requires an additional pharmacy license.). Steve Koch Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic Why Won t My Dog Eat Establishing a Diagnosis here are multiple reasons why a dog may stop eating. The first thing to determine is whether or not the dog is hungry. The dog can be so sick that he or she doesn t feel like eating much like we feel when we have the flu or he may be hungry but it may just hurt too much to eat like we feel if we have a sore throat. If you offer something the dog really likes and he or she smells it then they are hungry. If your dog turns its head and doesn t smell what you are offering then he or she is not hungry. T the food. When this happens you must mentally go through the list of the most common diseases that cause lack of appetite and make an appointment with your veterinarian. Because there are so many causes for loss of appetite your veterinarian will start to collect a database of information to help identify the source of the problem. A minimum database usually begins with a complete blood cell count and serum chemistries that check for liver kidney and electrolyte abnormalities. Radiographs (x-rays) also may be needed to determine what is going on inside the animal. An increase in the white cells in the body indicates tissue damage usually caused by some type of infection. Cancer also can increase the white cell count because the body is trying to clean up damaged tissue. Low white cell counts on the other hand indicate viruses or a problem with cell production in the bone marrow. Dr. W. Steve Koch Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic Is Your Dog in Pain Pain when eating is the shortest list. The most common causes are infected or broken teeth or tumors in the mouth. Because dogs tend to chew so many things it is very common for them to get sticks or bones stuck in between the teeth. Throat infections are common in dogs which may cause the lymph nodes in the throat to enlarge. Sedation or anesthesia may be required to completely examine the mouth area looking for a sensitive area or foreign objects. The most complex problems occur when the dog has no interest in food even when you offer him something he normally loves and your dog won t even smell Exposure to Toxins Some of the most common causes of lack of appetite are external toxins that the dog may have taken in by eating or drinking. Toxins can accumulate in the body due to its inability to clean itself and excrete the toxins. Examples are liver disease kidney disease and obstruction of the gall bladder as well as infections that are damaging tissue and leaving waste products in the body. Damage to the pancreas can cause such intense pain that the dog will not eat. Any type of pain in fact can cause an animal to not want to eat. Ear infections for example can cause pain on chewing. Here in Florida parasites are a very common cause of loss of appetite. The parasites can be in the intestinal track causing diarrhea. After your veterinarian has done a thorough physical he or she can narrow down the area of the body that may be affected and then use the information from the collected data to determine what organs may be affected. The history of how your pet has been acting that you share with your veterinarian needs to be accurate and detailed. A recent study by the American Medical Association determined that the patient history and the physical exam were the two most important components of a correct diagnosis. The laboratory tests also are critical in proving the diagnosis. Consequently if your dog has not been eating a veterinarian s diagnosis is key to your dog s recovery. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that an estimated 15 million Americans have asthma including nearly five million children under the age of 18. Can Cats Prevent Asthma in Young Children A allergic to a cat was a strong risk factor for having asthma and children who grew up with cats in their households were less likely to develop asthma Perzanowski reports. The discovery was made as a result of Perzanowski s research into the rapidly rising number of asthma cases around the globe. The disease has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and according to Perzanowski asthma is widespread affecting one in every four adults and one in every three kids so a large percentage of children develop asthmatic symptoms early in life. Perzanowski and his colleagues at Columbia University s Mailman School of Public Health studied a group of children living in New York City. They found that by age five kids who grew up around high levels of cat allergens were far less likely to show allergy or asthma symptoms. Shelley Thayer Executive Director Cat Depot Cats are loving and affectionate pets but cat dander (skin scales or flakes from fur) their saliva or their urine can spark allergy attacks and even lead to the development of asthmatic symptoms. New studies however are shedding light and hope regarding cats and asthma and that s good news for pet owners and their babies. Allergy researcher Matt Perzanowski has revealed that cats may actually protect some kids from getting sick. This paradoxical finding indicates that in some cases allergen exposure over a long period of time at a young age can actually prevent or shield against asthma symptoms. Being People with cats at home are exposed to especially high levels of cat allergen probably to the order of a hundred times greater than homes without cats Perzanowski says. The higher level of exposure may be what s causing the protective effect shown in children who have lived with a cat from birth to age five. Perhaps this theory is similar to the Hygiene Hypothesis which suggests that exposure to bacterial and viral agents can actually benefit the immune system giving it time to respond to pathogens and build up immunities. There was however no data to indicate whether the effect would continue past the early childhood years. A study in Allergy and Asthma Proceedings titled Effect of Cat and Day Care Exposures on the Risk of Asthma in Children with Atopic Dermatitis came to a similar conclusion regarding the relationship between exposure of children to cats in day care. Finally Perzanowski warns that buying a cat is no guarantee against asthma but if you own a cat and have a baby on the way it s possible that your pet could keep your child asthma free. And that s good news for everyone. Heart problems can be congenital meaning the condition is present at birth or they can be acquired later in life. Acquired conditions are more common. to heart failure. While it can occur in any type of dog this condition is much more common in large breed dogs particularly Doberman pinschers. A Word About Heartworms Mitral Valve Disease The most common acquired heart problem is mitral valve disease which is a leaky valve between heart chambers. This condition accounts for 75 percent of canine heart disease. Many dogs can live with this condition for years before developing a severe problem but it can progress to heart failure which can cause death. Mitral valve disease can occur in large and small breeds and is particularly common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Many other heart conditions can occur but are less common. However one important disease to keep in mind is heartworm disease. Heartworms are parasitic worms that live in the heart and they can cause a lot of damage. They are transmitted by mosquito bites and consequently are a problem year round in Florida. Fortunately unlike many other heart conditions this disease is preventable and many good quality preventative products are available. Dr. Tamara Powell VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital Disease Detection Dilated Cardiomyopathy Another common acquired heart problem is dilated cardiomyopathy. With this condition the muscular walls of the heart expand and become weak so that blood is not pumped very efficiently. This condition accounts for about 10 percent of canine heart disease and it also can lead Some diseases especially mitral valve disease may be discovered in its early stages by the presence of a heart murmur or abnormal heart sound which your veterinarian will listen for during an exam. A heart murmur by itself is not a specific diagnosis as a murmur can occur with many different heart problems. Therefore when a murmur is heard further testing typically will be recommended in order to accurately diagnose the cause of the murmur. During a physical examination your veterinarian also will evaluate your dog for any abnormalities of heart rate or rhythm pulse strength or lung sounds. These symptoms also may be an indication for further testing. If your dog has heart disease you may notice signs at home such as coughing exercise intolerance decreased energy or even fainting. However it is common for pets to have no symptoms of heart disease until it has progressed into a severe disease or even failure. Therefore even if your pet is not currently showing any symptoms early testing and diagnosis of a heart condition can be the key to providing helpful treatments before too much damage occurs. Starting treatments early in the course of a disease may help to prolong your pet s life and to delay the onset of heart failure. An Accurate Diagnosis is Critical Treatments and medications for heart diseases are highly variable depending on the nature of disease present which makes accurate diagnosis of the condition very important. Tests may include chest xrays an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) EKG readings blood tests and blood pressure monitoring. Your veterinarian will discuss the recommended tests based on your pet s breed history and physical exam findings. Tamara Powell DVM is one of the veterinarians on staff at VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital located at 3802 N. Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota. Additional information about the veterinary practice is available online at www.vcahospitals.com lockwood-ridge. To schedule an appointment please call 941-359-3800. Some breeds of dogs are prone to certain types of heart disease. Mitral valve disease for example is more common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels while dilated cardiomyopathy occurs more frequently in Doberman pinschers. Voting was held online at Sarasota Pet s recently redesigned Web site www.SarasotaPet.com. Within just two weeks hundreds of votes came in and William a Woburn Scottish Terrier earned the highest number of votes Just two years old William is the constant companion of North Port resident Skip Sodano who retired to Florida in January after a 31-year tenure with the United States Postal Service. Born and raised in Fitchburg Massachusetts Skip and his family frequently spent summers in Florida when he was a boy. Skip has long been an admirer of Scottish Terriers. He has in fact had six Scotties in his life. Buster Skip s first Scottie was a rescue and Brodie--his last before William--died at the age of 11 from cancer. Like many grieving pet owners Skip swore he would never have another dog Meet Our Online Cover Contest Winner after he lost Brodie this past October. I planned to spend a lot of time traveling with Brodie after I retired Skip says with sadness. I lost my shot-gun companion and I was devastated. It wasn t long however that Skip decided to reconsider his decision to live without a canine companion. I just couldn t see my future without a dog by my side he says. Skip soon began researching online for a new companion and discovered Woburn Scottish Terriers (www.WoburnScottishTerriers.com) owned by Steve and Debi Russell As breeders and ownerhandlers of AKC-Registered Championship Scottish Terriers in Chicago Illinois the couple had a young puppy that had been bred by Locksley Scottish Terriers in St. Louis Missouri (www.locksleyscotties. com). That pup caught Skip s eye as he watched online videos of the Scotties at play and he instantly knew that William the pup was the dog for him. Although William and Skip only have been together since November 2012 the Scottie already is well-trained and currently is enrolled in show classes held Skip Sodano of William a Woburn North Port and Scottish Terrier. Within an hour arrangements were made and we were on our way to Winter Haven where we met Sean and his wife Anne. With great care and careful coordination we got Yoda acclimated and settled in for the 1 1 2 hour trip. We monitored her closely and updated Sean and Anne along the way with her status. Yoda did very well in transport and she did not experience any anxiety. We arrived safely at Blue Pearl with no complications. Upon her arrival Yoda was evaluated had surgery that evening to insert a stent and was released the next day. Two days later the whole family was back in Atlanta with Yoda on her way to making a full recovery. Sean and Anne were so grateful that we were able to help them in their time of crisis. Using the ambulance really was Yoda s only chance for survival and as Sean said they just couldn t bear even the thought of having to put their 5-year-old dog down. In Sean s words Thank you for giving us our dog back. At Vet Care Express Animal Ambulance we are so thankful to be able to help in this kind of situation it just reminded all of us again of the many things that we have for which we should be thankful. For all of us at Vet Care Express Animal Ambulance this was our most thankful Thanksgiving yet At left Sean and Yoda reunited after Yoda s release from BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Medicine for Pets in Tampa. Near left Yoda sits in the oxygen box en route to Tampa. We decided to stay home and have dinner with our neighbors as the holidays tend to be busy for the ambulance...don t emergencies always seem to happen on holidays The call came in around 11 00 a.m. Sean called and he was crying. He and his wife s 5-year-old 5-pound Yorkie was in critical condition at a veterinary emergency hospital in Winter Haven Florida. She had been there two days and wasn t getting any better she needed emergency surgery. Their dog Yoda had almost a completely collapsed trachea and could not be off of oxygen for even minutes. They were referred to The Veterinary Hospital at Florida s College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville because the veterinary team there does that specialized type of surgery. Knowing that the couple had to find a service that could transport Yoda on oxygen Sean began researching to try to find an animal ambulance. Because Vet Care Express Animal Ambulance is the only service of its kind in Florida Sean contacted us. In light of the distance and Yoda s fragile condition I was concerned about her chances of surviving such a long transport. While speaking further with Sean I learned that they were from Atlanta and were in Florida visiting their son for the holiday when Yoda became ill. Realizing this I asked if they had reached out to a closer specialty and emergency veterinary hospital called T Cheryl Brady is the owner of Vet Care Express Animal Ambulance the first emergency animal ambulance transport service in Florida. Canned or dry c d has been the perennial favorite but I have found a diet from Royal Canine called Urinary SO to be my favorite. They both dissolve the crystals and increase urination to flush out the bladder. There are a number of food manufacturers that are attempting to address this issue including Purina. I am not trying to single one manufacturer out over another in this forum I leave that to my office staff. Your best effort is to give your cat a diet that dissolves the crystals and make sure to provide plenty of water. Dr. Reinhart my wife and I recently have been arguing about how there are so many things we need to be careful of to ensure our Shepherd s health during the summer months. She thinks if we just hose our dog down outdoors that he will be fine. Can you help her understand the gravity of the situation --Melvin Well Melvin there is a whole array of summer issues to consider not to mention heat exhaustion. Last year I had a client take his dog outside for an extended walk on an extremely warm summer day. He did not bring any water with him and on his return the dog went right to the water bowl drank a large amount of water turned to walk away and dropped dead. On exam the pet s internal temperature was still a lethally high 106 which means it was even higher at the time the dog arrived home from his walk. Enough said There are a myriad of insects that increase in numbers during the summer months. Mosquitos can cause the obvious heartworms but there is the potential of encephalitis as well as West Nile Virus. Bees also can be a constant nuisance. Another serious hot-weather issue I At left before cooling off your dog--or your children--with a refreshing spray from a garden hose test the water temperature Hoses that have been sitting in the summer sun can contain scalding water with a temperature that can reach higher than120 degrees Fahrenheit which can cause serious burns. Photo 123rf.com mfelixphoto Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Dr. Reinhart my eight-year-old Siamese cat became blocked last month and we had to rush him to the emergency clinic. He was pretty critical but after some heroic efforts on the part of the doctors he made it through. He still has a guarded prognosis and I would like to know if there is anything I can do to stop it from happening again. --Ralph Well Ralph this is some serious stuff. There are crystals being made by your cat as a result of how he metabolizes his food and these crystals formed a plug that obstructed his urethra. As the result of this plugging his bladder has enlarged and the pressure eventually backs up into his kidney and places him in a potentially lethal kidney failure. Not all cats survive you were fortunate. It used to be thought that this condition was a result of a dry food diet and only canned food was recommended. This is no longer valid. We also thought that the ash content of the food (the phosphorous and other minerals) was the culprit. Although somewhat valid there are more important issues at stake here. The pH or acid-base balance of the urine is very important. The more common crystals found dissolve in acid urine so attempting to keep the urine acidic is beneficial. There are products such as Uroeze (Ammonium chloride) that acidify the urine while cranberry juice on the other hand is of little value. Because this is an acid stomach issues can be a problem. Q A Q A recently had the time to review is thermal burns. Interestingly the Department of Pathology at Texas A&M had 22 skin-biopsy samples consistent with thermal burns. Ten of these were found to be suggestive of exposure to hot water from GARDEN HOSES...that s right-- your seemingly innocent garden hose The studies showed that garden hoses that have been left in the summer sun can contain water with a temperature exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit So just picking up that hose to spray your pets actually may be dousing them with scalding water initiating skin death and the subsequent tragedy that follows--serious burns. Who would of thought So your wife who just wants to hose your Shepherd down to cool him off may cause more of a problem then YOU could ever even imagine Dr. Michael Reinhart is the owner of Jacaranda Animal Hospital located at 725 Shamrock Boulevard in Venice. Maria Hello Ted Thank you for introducing us to Aloe 4 Pets. To say that we are grateful is an understatement. We live in an area that is infected with ticks and whenever our dog goes into the woods it would take hours to pull the ticks off. We would sometimes find enough to fill half a jar. It has been over two years since we started feeding our dog your product and there has not been a tick on the animal ever since. Just recently we had a friend from Toronto visit us. His dog and ours meandered outside for an hour or so. When the dogs returned our friend s pet was loaded with ticks while our dog never had a one. You were so right when you told us that the product keeps ticks away. Deb Aloe 4 Pets is a lifesaver. I began using the product on my pets last week and I already am noticing a difference. They are growing fur back and their energy levels are great I have two happy little pups again Thank you Aloe 4 Pets. Since the beginning of time wild canines have used their sense of smell to track their prey. As man domesticated the dog we learned from our canine companions that they could help us find dinner in order to survive. Modern man has further developed the use of these skills for sport such as bird coon boar and all kinds of wild-game hunting. Law enforcement uses K-9s for locating lost people including children and seniors who have wandered away from nursing home facilities. K-9s also are used to track fugitives find discarded evidence and of course in bomb and drug detection. There are many Search and Rescue teams scattered across the country that often assist law enforcement officials. They train their dogs to help locate individuals in a variety of disaster situations including building collapses and avalanches or they are trained to locate lost hikers and underwater drowning victims. Why the dog It is known that humans have approximately five million scent receptors that we use to enjoy the perfume of a flower the waft of baked goods as we walk past a bakery the aroma of a good steak dinner from the restaurant down the street the brewing pot of java that helps us focus in the morning or a leak in the gas pipe. However unless we are standing right next to someone who hasn t showered in a week or so we don t easily pick up human scent. Most dog breeds on the other hand have in the vicinity of one hundred million scent receptors and Bloodhounds the master of all trackers have possibly twice that many or more. This makes it easy for them to discriminate what or who it is they are tracking. Years ago the ever champion of the dog world the American Kennel Club devised a test to measure how well a dog had been trained to track what we want them to track as opposed to the deer or rabbit they Dot Bayer K-9 Tracking Instructor Sarasota Obedience Training Club with her award-winning Cairn Terrier Chriscay s Say Goodnight Gracie Fran Henshaw and Jeni a Labrador Retriever work on a long 20- to 30-foot line Dot Bayer and Lili a Chinese Crested demonstrate that all dogs large and small can track Monica Hendrickson shows Strider a Border Collie a glove at the start of the track 34 would prefer to track. It is a real team effort involving a great deal of training trust and confidence between handler and dog. There are basically three skill levels tested. The first level earning a TD or Tracking Dog title tests a dog s ability to follow human scent on moderate terrain and find an article dropped at the end. It demands that the dog follow human scent set down on the ground by a Track Layer over a course 440 to 500 yards containing 3 to 5 right and left 45-degree turns aged for thirty minutes to two hours and indicating a glove at the end of the track that has been scented by the same person who has walked or laid the track. Two judges and track layer plot the track the day before the trial marking it with flags similar to those used by construction workers to mark water electric or gas lines before they dig. The next morning the day of the trial the track layer re-walks the track rescenting the ground by simply walking the predetermined course and picking up the flags as he or she proceeds. At the very end he or she drops a glove that has been carried on his or her body since the track was plotted the day before. After the allotted time to age the track the dog and handler work the course blind without the aid of the flags. The dog must indicate the glove at the end in some manner in order to pass the test. Once the dog has earned the TD title it April May 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet may go on to the next level TDX or Tracking Dog Excellent. The purpose of this test is to show unquestionably that the dog has the ability to discriminate scent and possesses the stamina perseverence and courage to do so under a wide variety of conditions. The process is essentially the same as TD training although increasingly more difficult. The TDX track is 800 to 1 000 yards long aged 3 to 5 hours with five to seven turns two additional articles that must be indicated along the way and extra distractions in more challenging terrain and more dense cover. The most difficult test is VST or Variable Surface Tracking which involves at least three different surfaces such as asphalt road and a stream as well as grass. VST is a test of crediblity verifying the dog s willingness and ability to recognize and follow human scent while adapting to changing scenting conditions including non-vegetative surfaces. The length of the track is from 600 to 800 yards and has three different surfaces vegetation and two concrete as well as gravel sand and mulch aged 3 to 5 hours with four to eight turns. Once a dog has earned all three levels of titles he or she then earns the privilege of being classified as a Champion Tracker or CT. Now anyone who might be interested in finding out more about the sport doesn t need to run out and get a Bloodhound. ALL dogs are born with this innate ability. Witness a newborn pup just minutes old using its nose and making its way for that first meal of mother s life-giving milk. Dogs of all breeds--large and small--are eligible. Years ago as a Track Layer I laid the track for a Papillon. This dog became the first Pap in the history of the breed to win its TD title and the dog was just a little over six months of age Even if you are not interested in competing tracking is a fun way to get off the couch and head outdoors for some healthy exercise that doesn t feel like work. Your dog will enjoy it too Happy Tracking. Dot Bayer is a retired Physical Education teacher school counselor and Eating Disorders and Drug and Alcohol Addictions counselor. Currently a Snow Bird from New York Dot and her imported German Shepherd Dog got their start in K9 tracking in the 1970s while living in Iowa where she helped launch a tracking program for The Des Moines Obedience Training Club. Upon returning to her hometown in upstate New York Dot joined the Dog Obedience Training Club of Rochester New York where she taught tracking classes which has lead to a very successful tracking program that offers annual AKC Tracking trials and workshops. Dot also became active in the Massasauga Search and Rescue Team participating in searches throughout New York State and the Adirondack Mountains. A law enforcement department in the area offered to buy her top-notch tracking German Shepherd so Dot began to help with their tracking program. She acquired another Shepherd and both dogs were certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association and trained in cadaver recovery drowning victims indication snow rescue and building and area search. Botha A fter months of hard work determination and extensive renovation Nate s Place located at 8437 Cooper Creek Boulevard in the Cooper Creek Shopping Plaza in University Park is once again officially open for business. Owned and operated by Nate s Honor Animal Rescue and named for its generous benefactor the late Nathan Benderson Nate s Place now serves as both an adoption center and a gift emporium for pets and animal lovers alike. Nate s Place initially opened in 2009 when the fledgling animal organization first needed a space from which to adopt the dogs and cats that were either relinquished by owners that could no longer afford their care or were pulled from high-kill shelters. An animal lover at heart Nate Benderson generously donated an empty storefront in the Cooper Creek Shopping Plaza to assist the group in finding homes for the dogs and cats in its care. But there was a time not long ago when the future of Nate s Place was in question. While The Ranch located at 4951 Lorraine Road was expected to be Nate s Honor Animal Rescue s only adoption center once it opened in 2011 the visibility and traffic at the Cooper Creek Shopping Center in University Park was hard to deny. With the approval of the Benderson Foundation which has generously provided both properties--but none of the operating expenses--to the animal organization the board of directors at Nate s Honor Animal Rescue decided to keep the storefront in the plaza and began renovations on the space late last year. We are very very fortunate and extremely grateful to have such a prime spot in a plaza that continues to expand com- ments Dari Oglesby who serves on the board of directors at Nate s Honor Animal Rescue. With the opening of Nordstrom Rack in the shopping center in the coming months we are expecting even greater interest and increased visibility for Nate s Place. Although the renovated space at Nate s Place is now by design half its original size there is still ample room to showcase the animals available for adoption while adding a new source of revenue for the 501(c)(3) organization. The front of the space now houses an eclectic and equally charming collection of gifts and supplies for both animals and their human companions. Everyone who walks through the doors of Nate s Place is an animal lover Dari says. Our new gift emporium caters to those who need to buy new supplies for the pets they have just adopted such as collars leashes and harnesses and also to people who are looking for unique gifts. Upon entering the newly renovated Nate s Place visitors will discover an assortment of some of the most unusual finds in the pet marketplace including toys treats mugs greeting cards note pads wooden wall plaques dish towels beds bowls books magnets and so much more. Every square 44 April May 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Gift Emporium & Adoption Center foot--from floor to ceiling--is brimming with innovative items for sale. Plan on spending time to browse amidst all the distinctive offerings for dogs cats and people too Even if visitors to Nate s Place cannot adopt an animal they can still support Nate s Honor Animal Rescue by shopping in our new boutique Dari says. While the emporium quickly is proving to be a profitable addition to Nate s Honor Animal Rescue s income--which is generated exclusively through fund-raisers and donations-- Nate s Place is still focused on finding new homes for its adoptable puppies dogs kittens and cats. Nate s Place serves as a gateway to The Ranch which is only 10 minutes away Dari says. It s an amazing place that everyone should visit just to see the way the animals are housed and how we are changing animal adoption here in Manatee County. Situated on eight acres of property east of I-75 The Ranch features environmentally friendly cottages with outdoor play areas where both cats and dogs can live in comfort until they are adopted. The colorful Caribbean cottages have become prototypes replicated nationwide as the trend toward communal rather than kennel housing for adoptable animals continues. Photos opposite page Nate s Place reopened in December 2012 as a gift emporium and adoption center offering a charming and eclectic collection of gifts for both animals and people as well as an assortment of pet supplies. The revenue generated from sales at the gift emporium will help support Nate s Honor Animal Rescue s operating expenses. On this page at top With the renovation of Nate s Place cats enjoy bright sunlight and freedom to roam in an enclosed room with its own ventilation system. At right In the back of the gift emporium adoption center large kennels with comfy beds house puppies and dogs during adoption hours. At closing the canine residents are transported back to their cottages at The Ranch on Lorraine Road. Photos by Candace T. Botha Recent additions at The Ranch also include a children s playground and an agility field. Although Nate s Place officially reopened on Saturday December 1 Nate s Honor Animal Rescue hosted a grand re-opening on Sunday March 3 when hundreds of people stopped in to see the new emporium and adoption center. As part of the renovations cats that are available for adoption now have a private room with its own ventilation system. Prior to the reconstruction we occasionally had visitors that suffered from allergies and were unable to come into Nate s Place because the cats roamed about in the adoption center s open areas Dari says. The cats awaiting adoption now have a large enclosed area with its own ventilation so people with allergies no longer experience any symptoms when they visit. While the cats stay overnight at Nate s Place the dogs who also have their own enclosed space at the back of the storefront are transported back to The Ranch when the Cooper Creek adoption center closes. Within the next several months a kiosk that resembles one of the cottages at The Ranch will be constructed outside of Nate s Place. The kiosk will house a 42-inch touch-screen computer that continuously loops a slide show of photographs of all of the dogs and cats that are available for adoption at Nate s Honor Animal Rescue. Because of limited staffing and volunteers Nate s Place cannot stay open until 10 00 p.m. like the other stores and restaurants in the plaza Dari explains. By installing the touch-screen computer we can capitalize on the traffic in the plaza at night with hopes of bringing more people that are interested in adopting an animal back to Nate s Place during the day or out to The Ranch when we are open. The kiosk is expected to be installed by summer. Nate s Place gift emporium is open Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and Sunday from 11 00 a.m. to 6 00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 00 a.m. to 8 00 p.m. Adoption hours at Nate s Place are Wednesday through Sunday from 11 00 a.m. to 4 00 p.m. The Ranch is open for adoptions Wednesday Thursday Friday and Sunday from 11 00 a.m. to 4 00 p.m. and Saturday from 10 00 a.m. to 4 00 p.m. Volunteers and foster parents always are needed at Nate s Place and The Ranch. If it s making headlines you ll read about it here Bark Out Loud OASIS Hosts 11th Annual Fund-Raiser Singing and Swinging are Saving on Saturday April 13 For the past 10 years Opera for Animals Singing is Saving (OASIS) has raised thousands of dollars for local animal groups while entertaining hundreds of attendees with the extraordinary talents of its founders international opera singers Carol Sparrow and Randolph Locke and their musical guests. Originally established in 2002 OASIS is a charitable 501(c) (3) organization that organizes and or performs concerts to raise funds for animal groups and also provides entertainment for special events hosted by local animal welfare organizations. The 11th annual benefit which is being co-chaired this year by Marci and Mark Weibel will be held Saturday April 13 at Palm Aire Country Club 5601 Country Club Way in Sarasota. After celebrating one decade of community service in 2012 the founders and organizers decided to add two new elements to the annual fund-raiser which traditionally has included dinner and a concert along with raffles and a silent auction. For the first time this year the event also will include a golf tournament. Some of our loyal patrons have been asking us to include a golf tournament as part of the fund-raiser for several years Carol says. The timing was right to make it happen. Another first this year A portion of the proceeds from the event also will be donated to All Children s Hospital in Tampa. Randy recently had a student that came to him for a brush-up voice lesson Carol explains. He told Randy that All Children s Hospital saved his life. This young man will sing at the concert this year and share his story Carol continues. I am certain that our guests will find his words and music very moving. The golf tournament is set to start at 1 00 p.m. check-in commences at 11 00 a.m. According to Carol the start of the tournament will begin with a musical introduction by bagpipers and experts from Massage Envy will be on hand throughout the tournament to offer soothing shoulder and arm massages. There also will be mixed play at the tournament so husbands and wives can play together. Attire for the evening s dinner and concert is country club casual Carol says so golfers are encouraged to bring a change of clothes and enjoy the camaraderie in the clubhouse after the tournament and before the evening festivities. The cocktail hour will begin at 5 00 p.m. and dinner followed by the concert is slated to start at 6 00 p.m. In addition to a sumptuous meal attendees also will enjoy raffles and a silent auction. And then the entertainment begins Carol and Randolph along with several accomplished musical guests including Stella Zambalis an internationally renowned soprano who also adores Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet www.SarasotaPet.com International opera singers and founders of OASIS Carol Sparrow and Randolph Locke at home with one of their own beloved cats. Photo courtesy of Carol Sparrow animals will perform both classical and popular favorites. Other special guests also are expected to attend the golf tournament and perform in the concert but Carol is mum about who will be there in order to maintain an element of surprise. During the evening representatives from Sarasota County Animal Services will host on-site adoptions with hopes of finding new homes for the canines and kittens in the organization s care. In past years we have had Great Danes Greyhounds and Chihuahuas Carol comments. This year we will showcase a mix of different breeds. While Carol admits that the planning and preparations for the fund-raiser each year take lots of hard work she and Randolph gladly put in the time in honor and memory of our mothers who inspired the couple s passion for both music and animals. I just have to give back and help in any way I can Carol says. I can hardly bear to visit animal shelters because it just breaks my heart I want to help every one of them. We all have to find our fort --what we are best at and how it can be used to help others Carol adds. Those of us who love animals know that the loss of a pet chips off a part of your heart that is gone forever Carol continues. But unlike people our animal companions always are there for us unconditionally. I will promote animal companionship until the day I die. This year attendees have three options to support OASIS fundraiser They can just play a round a golf participate in the golf tournament and attend the dinner and concert or just attend the dinner and concert. The cost to play golf in the tournament is 65. The dinner and concert price is 90. The premium package which includes golf dinner and the concert is priced at 150.00. To purchase tickets please call 941-914-8069 or 941-351-1007. Photo by Lisa Burns April May 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Fifth Annual Mutt Derby at Sarasota Kennel Club Set for Sunday April 14 Many local residents who grew up in Sarasota will remember years ago when the Mutt Derby was a favorite tradition held annually in the spring. For Jack Collins Jr.--whose family owns Sarasota Kennel Club (SKC)--and countless others the event always was a memorable part of their childhoods. Originally launched in 1953 the popular gathering drew crowds for more than 30 years before it was inexplicably cancelled. It wasn t until many years later--in 2008--that Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Inc. decided to revive the community tradition much to the delight of local dog owners. Through the years SKC has received numerous requests to bring the Mutt Derby back comments Nancy Coffey who founded Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Inc. with Jack Collins Jr. and serves as the organizer of the event each year. It was bark out part of Sarasota s history for many years and we wanted to once again offer an inexpensive community event that kids of all ages and their families could enjoy. Now in its fifth year the Mutt Derby will be held Sunday April 14 at Sarasota Kennel Club located at 5400 Bradenton Road in Sarasota. The races are scheduled to begin at noon. The renaissance of the Mutt Derby has been a resounding success. Last year hundreds of dog owners registered to participate and thousands of spectators cheered on the sidelines as dogs of all sizes raced down the track. And throughout the event the crowds often roared with laughter when an occasional canine competitor jumped in the pond at SKC to cool off Proceeds from the Mutt Derby once again will benefit Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Inc. and All Faiths Food Bank. All breeds of dogs--except Greyhounds and Whippets--are invited to participate. To compete in the races dogs will be grouped together by size to run on the track at the kennel club. Awards will be given to the top runners in each division. Because pre-registration for the Mutt Derby is highly recommended Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption has set up three dates at the kennel club when community dog owners can register to participate. These dates are Thursday April 11 from 11 00 a.m. to 2 00 p.m. Friday April 12 from 11 00 a.m. to 3 00 p.m. Saturday April 13 from 11 00 a.m. to 3 00 p.m. Registration also will be available the morning of the event from 10 00 a.m. to 11 30 a.m. New this year All dogs in attendance at the event must be registered--whether or not they are running--for the safety of all spectators and participants. The entry fee is 20 for each dog competing in the Mutt Derby. Because the Mutt Derby also benefits All Faiths Food Bank all spectators are asked to bring non-perishable canned or boxed food items as their admission fee to the event. Recommended foods include canned meats beef stew canned ravioli canned fruits and juices peanut butter jelly and canned tomato products. Bags of dog food also will be accepted. Last year more than 1 400 pounds of food was collected at the Mutt Derby. Nancy is hoping to exceed that amount this year. All Faiths Food Bank and Fast Friends certainly appreciate your support for our dogs and for our community food bank Nancy says. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy another wonderful community day here in Sarasota. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at SKC s concession stands. For more information about the Mutt Derby please contact Nancy Coffey by calling 941-355-7744 Ext. 1003 or 941-351-5309.
