The Shih Tzu Schnauzer mix is one of 12 senior dogs in the care of Vintage Paws Sanctuary in Sarasota. Left behind by her family who could not keep her because they were moving Coco was taken to Hillsborough County Animal Services. When pulled by Jennifer Hummel of ACE Pet Resort who founded Vintage Paws Sanctuary earlier this year Coco suffered from two bacterial infections in her ears and three intestinal parasites. Eye infections early in life left Coco with minimal sight and she also recently had a benign tumor removed from her back. Abandoned. Neglected. Ill and alone. Is this dog less deserving of a loving home just because her family no longer could care for her Not if Vintage Paws Sanctuary can help In keeping with the new 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization s mission which is to let no senior dog die alone Coco has been given a silver lining --a second chance at happiness--by ACE Pet Resort s caring staff and Vintage Paws committed volunteers. Find out how Vintage Paws Sanctuary is bringing joy back into the lives of senior dogs by reading the profile that begins on page 42. Botha publisher for pet owners nonprofit animal groups and pet businesses in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Here with Toby Lucy and Riki. projects are posted that detail a financial need and we as a community can respond by making a Photo by Liana Roman donation of 5 or more. We all know how devastating it is when one of our beloved animals is ill or we have an unexpected emergency and funds just are not available to cover the costs. These financial catastrophes happen all too frequently with our local animal groups who are working hard to save lives and cannot afford to take in dogs or cats that are ill even when it is a condition that easily can be remedied. How can you help By visiting www.SarasotaPet.com fund-it and making a small donation Even 5 can mean the world of difference to a pet owner or an animal group in need. Just think about it...there are approximately 25 000 readers of each issue of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet. If we each donated 5 we could raise 125 000 in a heartbeat Please visit the Web site and lend a helping hand to other animal lovers in our area. I wanted to point out something brand new in this issue In the Calendar of Events which begins on page 56 you now will find all of the dog training classes in a separate section that follows the events and fund-raisers that are happening in our pet community. This should make it easier for you to find the events you would like to attend and the training classes in which you would like to enroll. I also would like to remind you to check the Calendar of Events online at www.SarasotaPet.com. If new events and fund-raisers come across my desk after the magazine goes to press they are posted online. Be sure to check the Web site regularly so you don t miss all that is going on Finally I would like to encourage you to read a very special feature in this issue that spotlights Vintage Paws Sanctuary a relatively new 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization launched earlier this year by Jennifer Hummel of ACE Pet Resort. Smith DVM Sarasota Veterinary Center hen traveling by air a pet owner has to be a proactive advocate for his or her pet s safety. Your advocacy begins with booking the flight which is best done in person and not online. Plan ahead by traveling when the weather and temperature are more amenable such as early in the morning or in the evening especially during warmer months. Also specify whether your pet will be flying with you in the cabin or traveling in the cargo hold. In either case you will need a sturdy and approved carrier for your pet. Carriers made by the Sherpa Pet Group are guaranteed to meet airline regulations for in-cabin travel. If your pet will fly in cargo it is imperative to inspect all carrier screws connections and locks before your trip. It also is a good idea to use zip ties to further secure the carrier in case of rough handling by baggage personnel. Countless pets have been lost because crates have broken during transport and animals have escaped. Carry extra zip ties to use after inspection by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Another excellent recommendation is to write your cell phone number in permanent marker on heavyweight paper and securely attach a sign to each side of your pet s carrier. Also attach a sign that reads Do Not Open Except In Emergency & Only In An Enclosed Room. If for any reason airline personnel want you to remove your pet from the carrier prior to boarding ask a TSA agent to take you to a TSA security station where your pet will be safe and cannot escape. Once the Homeland Security sticker is placed on the carrier ask if there will be additional security checks. If not secure the carrier with additional zip ties. When flying with your pet a USDA APHIS health certificate completed by an 8 W accredited veterinarian is required by law. Be sure to carry copies of your pet s up-todate vaccination records as well. Do not--under any circumstances-- sedate your pet before flying Tragedies occur each year due to the effects of sedation combined with the unavoidable stresses of air travel that include temperature and air pressure changes excessive noise and less-than-gentle handing. Some natural or herbal calming remedies are acceptable to use as is association scent therapy. Ask your veterinarian well in advance about these options before using them on your own to avoid any interactions or ill effects. Anti-nausea medications obtained through your veterinarian also are acceptable for pets that suffer motion sickness. Micro chipping is a must in order to increase the chances of being reunited with your pet in the event he or she is lost. Before your trip do not give your pet any food or water for 8 to 12 hours to prevent digestive issues. However bring a container with you that you can use to offer your pet a drink after landing. On the day of your departure be friendly but proactive in telling airline personnel that you are traveling with a pet and that you are concerned about his or her safety. If your pet is traveling in cargo ask where animals are kept until they are loaded on the plane. Also ask that your pet be transported by an employee and not just pulled on a tug to the aircraft. Remind all airline personnel that it is against USDA and DOT regulations to stack pet carriers on top of each other the cost is a hefty fine of up to 100 000 At most airports you can watch as the cargo is loaded from a window at the gate. USDA regulations mandate that pets be loaded onto the plane last before departure and unloaded first upon arrival. Let the gate agent know that you wish to wait to board the plane until you are certain your pet is safely on board. Once you board the plane speak to the pilot and ask him or her to confirm that Dr. David T. Smith Sarasota Veterinary Center. Photo by Keith Millard Background photo BigStock.com Sergey Nivens your pet is on the plane. Also remind the pilot to consider your pet if the temperature in the cargo hold has to be adjusted. If your pet is traveling in the cabin with you choose seating away from the engines to minimize noise. Seats near the front of the plane also are preferred so you can exit more quickly upon landing. If cost is not a consideration choose an airline that only transports pets. These planes are climate controlled and are staffed by attendants that check on the animals every 15 minutes. A word of warning--it is best that shorter-nosed animals do not travel by air at all. Brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs Pugs and Persian cats among others are more likely to suffer fatal consequences during air travel. There is a valuable online resource for people who travel by air with their pets-- www.WhereIsJack.org was launched by the owners of a cat that was lost in John F . Kennedy International Airport for 61 days. Here you ll find a checklist of the safety criteria I have discussed and valuable information on air travel. Jack s owners recommend that you ask questions and be assertive but polite do not be shy Your knowledge and involvement in your pet s transport can mean a world of difference in the safe and respectful handling of your furry friend. As with any reptile children need to wash their hands after interacting with these pets and must be taught never to kiss a reptile although this species is less likely than most other reptile species to transmit harmful bacterial diseases. By Robert W. Rill Jr. VMD University Animal Clinic Care Feeding & Facts to Know M any reptilian species render themselves unsuitable for consideration as a child s pet and usually for multiple negative factors. If a youngster expresses a strong desire in keeping a reptile however there is one that can be highly recommended--the bearded dragon. Although its name may sound intimidating this creature boasts a mild-mannered disposition and is usually very content when handled gently by its caretaker. What Makes the Beardy an Ideal Pet for Children Unlike other reptiles these lizards rarely bite or scratch and do not whip their tails contrary to other family species. Bearded dragons tolerate being picked up and even enjoy the presence of their owners often eating out of their hands. These little guys always are alert and curious about people. When mature this Australian lizard weighs between 10 and 16 ounces and grows to a length of 12 to 16 inches by its second birthday. The average life span of a bearded dragon is up to 10 years of age. Males as they age will develop their dark characteristic beards (hence their name) and they are readily distinguishable from their female counterparts. Bearded dragons easily can be provided with a healthy environment. A large aquarium or smooth-sided enclosure is ideal. UVB lighting and a basking or heat light can maintain a temperature differential between 75 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Feeding is recommended in the morning and should consist of 55 percent salad 20 percent vegetables and 25 percent live prey (crickets meal worms etc.) Live food should be dusted with a calcium supplement. Thirty minutes of direct exposure to sunlight several times each week helps prevent the development of metabolic bone disease in your new pet. Although this species thrives in low humidity clean water should be provided daily in a shallow pan or dish for either drinking or soaking. When choosing a dragon a prospective owner should look for a lizard with an alert head-up posture and a well-filledout torso. The reptile should not have leg Dr. Robert W. Rill Jr. of University Animal Clinic. Photo courtesy of University Animal Clinic or toe deformities and also should be free of any skin lesions or discoloration. Unfortunately most dragons carry coccidia and or oxyurid intestinal parasites that are very difficult for even the best pet stores to prevent due to their highly contagious nature. Although not harmful to people these parasites can have devastating long-term effects on the pet. After purchasing a bearded dragon make an appointment with your exotic veterinarian for a complete physical and health checkup for your new pet. I also would recommended that you take a fresh fecal sample (dropping) for parasite analysis. An exotic veterinarian also will provide valuable information about proper care so you avoid mistakes as a new reptile owner and can insure a long and happy life for your dragon. Specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of cats dogs pocket pets and exotic animals Dr. Robert W. Rill Jr. owns University Animal Clinic an AAHA-Accredited veterinary clinic that is located at 8239 Cooper Creek Boulevard in University Park. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call 941-355-7707 or visit the clinic online at www.theuniversityanimalclinic.com. Because of their gentle dispositions and willingness to interact with their owners bearded dragons make excellent pets for children interested in reptiles. Cats typically do not get ill from Parvovirus although they can contract a disease called Panleukopenia virus which is very similar. Puppies are most susceptible to this disease. For reasons unknown Rottweilers and Doberman pinschers have a higher risk but the disease can affect any breed of dog. Vaccinations will significantly reduce your puppy s risk of catching Parvovirus. This typically means an initial inoculation followed by two to three booster shots. Unfortunately vaccination is not a complete guarantee so it is still important to avoid exposure to the virus. Direct contact with an infected dog is not necessary as the virus is very hardy and can survive in the environment for many months. Most infected puppies will shed the virus for about 10 days and this usually begins before a puppy is showing clinical signs. With young puppies avoid visiting any areas where you know an infected dog has been and avoid public places such as dog parks where exposure always is possible. While the disease is most common in puppies I have seen adult dogs contract Who is at Risk What Are the Symptoms Most puppies will experience vomiting and or diarrhea which commonly can contain blood and have a very foul odor. Typically appetite and energy will be notably decreased. In some cases you may notice pale gums weight loss a distended abdomen or a very painful abdomen. In most veterinary clinics a Parvovirus test is available that can help to quickly determine if a puppy has the disease. Dr. Tamara Powell VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital What is the Treatment Puppies typically become worse very quickly so it is important to seek care as soon as possible. Please do not try to treat the disease at home as it is a lot more than just an upset stomach --it is an aggressive and debilitating virus. Death can occur in just a few days and puppies are often in a great deal of pain. The most common cause of death is dehydration. Even if your puppy is trying to drink water it almost is impossible to keep up with the fluid losses just by drinking. Your puppy will need fluid therapy with an injectable electrolyte-balanced solution. Another harmful effect is sepsis a serious condition in which bacteria migrate through the damaged intestinal wall to cause a severe infection that affects the entire body. Often the body works so hard to fight this bacterial invasion that it exhausts most of its white blood cell supply resulting in an immune suppression that makes the infection even worse. An affected puppy will need antibiotics to prevent this condition. Treatment also will typically include anti-nausea and pain medications. Unfortunately treatment carries no guarantee of a puppy s survival especially if the disease already is advanced or has resulted in complications. However seeking treatment will help to decrease suffering and many puppies will respond very well and go on to live long happy lives. My Puppy is Recovering Well from Parvovirus. What is the Next Step Fortunately a puppy will have a strong immunity against Parvovirus after surviving an infection but he can still catch other diseases and parasites. Therefore when your puppy is healthy enough the next step will be to continue his or her routine vaccinations and dewormings. This is a serious and growing problem for our furry friends. Periodontal disease is caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque on the teeth and their supporting structures. Periodontal disease includes gingivitis (inflammation of the gingival soft tissues) and periodontitis (a more severe form in which bone supporting the tooth is lost with eventual loss of the tooth). It is a progressive usually incurable disease if plaque is not controlled. However it is manageable with proper treatment techniques. Dental disease doesn t just involve the mouth it affects the overall health of your pet. It can cause heart valve disease as well as liver and kidney disease. It can affect your pets appetites and may be painful for them. Treatment involves both professional treatment and home care and maintenance. The professional treatment should be performed by a veterinary practitioner and involves scaling polishing and extracting any diseased teeth. Knowledgeable practitioners must perform the scaling or irreversible damage may be done to the surfaces of the teeth. Polishing after scaling is imperative to prevent rapid plaque buildup. Polishing also smooths out the microscopic scratches formed during scaling. If the scratches are not polished away these imperfections will encourage the buildup of bacterial plaque which may mineralize to form calculus. After a professional dental cleaning it is imperative that A home care begins immediately. New plaque will begin to form within 24 hours of a cleaning unless positive steps are taken to control this accumulation. The successful treatment of periodontal disease ultimately lies with pet owners who must take active steps to maintain the Dr. Anne Hyle DVM MS BA CVA Sarasota Animal Medical Center teeth at home. There are many advantages to home care including the potential to save money on costly dental procedures which can range from hundreds to more than a thousand dollars depending on the severity of the condition. Home care will help eliminate obnoxious doggie breath and fewer dentals mean less anesthesia. Finally less dental disease leads to a reduced risk of tooth loss. The Relationship Between Diet & Dental Disease Diet also plays a role in the development of periodontal disease. Dry food does not appear to have a significant benefit in preventing the development of destructive periodontal disease and there are conflicting opinions on whether it helps control the development of plaque. Carnivores are intended to eat large chunks of meat and hide which would naturally cleanse their teeth and gums. While many people believe chewing bones helps reduce tartar it is not an ideal cleansing material and also leads to many fractured and damaged teeth. Brushing Teeth to Manage Plaque Brushing your pet s teeth is an important way to manage plaque build up. If begun at a young age most pets will adapt to it very well. While it is possible to train many dogs at a later age cats usually will not tolerate it. There are pet toothpastes available which are very palatable for both dogs and cats. Unfortunately many of these products contain artificial ingredients that are not healthy for your pet. I recommend natural toothpaste containing no fluoride. There also are several natural products that help reduce plaque formation without brushing. The Pros & Cons of Anesthesia-Free Dentistry While it is generally well accepted that a veterinarian or a well-trained veterinary technician should perform all dental procedures there is some debate as to whether a thorough cleaning can be performed without the use Brushing your pet s teeth on a regular basis minimizes the development of plaque which can lead to periodontal disease a progressive and usually incurable disease. Photo at left 123rf.com Pam Burley photo top left 123rf.com Bonzami Emmanuelle August September 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet 16 of general anesthesia. While anesthesia has become much less risky over the years due to safer drugs and monitoring systems there still is minor risk involved. Many clients are now requesting anesthesia-free dental cleanings because of the perceived risk of general anesthesia. There are pros and cons to both types of procedures. The pros for anesthesia-free dentistry are obvious...less cost and no anesthetic risk. The cons however are multiple. Often only the exterior surface of the teeth can be cleaned without anesthesia and it is difficult to clean under the gums. Polishing must be performed with a motorized polisher which scares some animals while awake. Most extractions cannot be performed without the use of anesthesia. The American Veterinary Dental College recommends dentals only be performed by veterinarians with the use of anesthesia. However many clients are pleased with the results of anesthesiafree dentistry. The key to success is having a calm tolerant patient with relatively healthy teeth and gums. Maintaining dental health is critical for your pets overall health and well-being. Regular dental check ups and home dental care are important components for preventing periodontal disease. Prevention is the key. Don t wait until your pet develops dental disease to begin dental care. Start today Anne Hyle DVM MS BA CVA is the owner of Sarasota Animal Medical Center located at 3646 Birky Street in Sarasota. This common misconception accounts for why so many Danes are surrendered into rescue between 12 and 18 months of age. Dane puppies like all puppies are active playful and very fast growing but Danes end up extremely large and without training they can be a handful. Karma a gorgeous Harlequin Great Dane who has one blue eye and one brown eye was one of these dogs. Purchased at a pet store by a family with young children she was too much for them to handle and was soon relegated to roaming in the backyard where she learned to be more active and more out of control. After a year without training Karma was surrendered to Southwest Florida Great Dane Rescue (SWGDR.org) and described as an extremely hyper dog. SWGDR was founded by Val Clows and Conni Borwick in 2000. G The 501(c)(3) rescues and adopts about 50 Danes a year in the Southwest Florida area. Val who owns Holistic for Pets in Sarasota and Bradenton also has owned Danes since 1973 and had previous agility experience with Ross (another rescue Dane who had recently retired) so she Hera Kai and COZ recognized that Karma had poOceanWolf Agility tential to become an exceptional agility dog especially given her small stature for a Dane weighing in at only 95 pounds. Val also has placed agility titles on two Smooth Fox Terriers and has obedience titles on two other Danes including a Companion Dog Excellent (CDX). She also has owned an AKC breed Champion Smooth Fox Terrier. Val currently has another Champion Smooth Fox Terrier in agility training waiting to follow in Karma s footsteps Karma initially needed considerable basic training house 20 August September 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet training manners and basic obedience she thought it was perfectly acceptable to run through the house jumping on and over furniture at breakneck speeds. She was quite a challenge but eventually realized that being a good girl has its advantages like being left loose in the house sleeping on the bed and coming to work with Val. Karma also began agility training and she loved it right away. Doing agility with a Great Dane presents many challenges like walking the narrow dog walk and fitting through tight tunnels which are not easy for large dogs. Karma had difficulty slowing down to make sharp turns and so she often made up her own courses In four years of showing Karma has earned several American Kennel Club (AKC) titles including her Master Standard Agility (MX) and Master Jumpers with Weaves (MXJ) this July. She has competed at the annual Great Dane Club of America (GDCA) National Specialty shows in Tennessee Arkansas and Kansas and in October she and Val are heading to Pennsylvania for this year s event. For 2013 Karma is ranked by the AKC as the 2 agility Great Dane in the country and will be attending the AKC Invitational Agility Tournament held in Orlando Florida in December. Karma also competes in obedience and rally obedience and loves to carry her own training bag a camera bag or even grocery bags into the house. She proudly carries her bag from Val s van to the show arena as if to announce her arrival and then back again at the end of the day proclaiming a good day s work has been done. Karma has transformed into such a little lady she is so gentle especially with the tiniest dogs and they seem to know it because they will come right up to her without hesitation. Although no couch potato Karma does enjoy lounging on the couch or bed. In fact Karma sleeps on a Sleep Number bed and her favorite setting is number 35. Thanks to training Karma has indeed become a gentle giant among agility dogs. Algae in your pond is a natural occurrence and will not harm your Koi unless the string or filamentous algae is so thick that the fish cannot swim or so plentiful that it depletes oxygen in the water. Warmer weather promotes algae growth but that is not the only contributing factor. Most people without realizing it tend to overstock and or overfeed their fish while under filtering and under aerating causing excess nutrients to build up which in turn feeds the algae. Appropriately sized filtration adding beneficial bacteria proper stocking feeding of Koi and the correct balance of plants are all key ingredients in keeping algae under control as well as keeping your Koi healthy. By Lisa Burns Backyard Getaway & Re-Scape.com Lisa Burns co-owner of Backyard Getaway in Myakka City and part of the Re-Scape.com team in maintaining a balanced pond. Plants will help provide shade and oxygen while they uptake the nutrients that would otherwise feed the algae. There are four categories of aquatic plants Oxygenating Submersed Emerged Floating All plants are beneficial to your pond but oxygenating plants will be most advantageous in helping to control green water algae. Keep in mind that submersed plants will create oxygen during the day but will use oxygen and create carbon dioxide when the sun goes down. Basically having too many submersed oxygenating plants is not good for your pond. There are two simple rules of thumb when it comes to feeding and stocking your pond. Never stock more than one inch of fish for every 10 to 20 gallons of water and allow room for growth. Also feed your Koi only what they can eat in three to five minutes a few times a week. There is no need to feed your Koi daily. They will do what comes naturally and will scavenge the bottom of the pond for algae bugs and other nutrients. Patience is key for algae control and pond clarity there are in fact no true quick fixes. Lisa is the co-owner of Backyard Getaway a family owned and operated pond service and retail pond and water garden supply business offering professional and personalized water garden and pond design installation and pond maintenance services. E very pond owner has faced the dreaded algae bloom at one time or another while caring for his or her pond. There are several types of algae the most common being Planktonic (green water) algae filamentous algae and string or hair algae. Keep in mind that not all algae are bad and some algae in your pond actually is beneficial not only for the health of your pond but also for the well being of your Koi. Green water algae is just like it sounds-- the water is green like pea soup and you cannot see your fish. String or hair algae sticks to everything it hangs on the waterfall on the rocks and on the stems of your water lilies. Filamentous algae is the ugliest of all the algae. Floating clumps of algae form Facts About Filters & Algae Having a filter for your pond will not do a bit of good if you are not cleaning the filter regularly or your pump is too small for the size of your pond. Filters come in many forms including skimmers pressure filters gravity-fed filters submersed and external bio filters. It is important that your filter has both mechanical and biological filtration. Bio filtration creates surface area for good bacteria to grow while mechanical filtration helps remove waste and muck. Mechanical filters should be rinsed and cleaned regularly to maintain efficiency. As for pump size your pond water should be turned at least once per hour through the filter system. Beneficial bacteria should be added to new ponds and also to established ponds during the spring and summer months to help grow good bacteria which will compete with bad bacteria and algae for nutrients. Nitrate filtering aquatic plants are equally important 22 Above a Ochiba Shigure Koi. Photo by Carolyn Weise. At left filamentous algae consists of floating clumps that form on the pond s surface and in the water then settle to the bottom at night. This designated day is important because it offers animal lovers an opportunity to remember the love memories and joy their pets have given them throughout their lives. The loss of a cherished and beloved pet is one of the most heartbreaking events animal owners may experience in their lifetimes. In some cases pet loss may be more emotional than losing a human companion or friend. Whether the death of a pet was anticipated or was unexpected and happened suddenly the loss is never easy. We grieve immensely following the death of a pet. This reaction is only natural. Our feelings towards our pets are so special that experts have a term for the relationship--it s called the human companion animal bond. When this bond is severed the loss can be overwhelming. The death of a pet can cause the same feelings of denial anger sadness guilt and grief that are associat- ed with the loss of a human companion. Society as a whole does not offer a grieving pet owner a great deal of sympathy. Even a close friend may comment It s only a dog you always can get another one. Such reactions however would be heartless given the loss of a human friend or family member and it is generally recognized that a person who has experienced such loss needs the support of friends and relatives. Psychologists now acknowledge that we need much support--but get far less--with the loss of a four-legged friend. It is important to realize that no two people grieve a loss in the same way. The amount of time it takes to work through the grief accept the loss and move forward is different for every person. Participation in National Pet Memorial Day is a helpful way to bring closure to the departure of our pets and to remember the good times shared with them. Whether you are starting with a young puppy or retraining an older dog it is never too late to establish this essential skill. I was first introduced to the Really Reliable Recall program by Leslie Nelson who originated this course at Camp Gone to The Dogs in Vermont. By Special Contributor Nancy Murphy Sarasota Obedience Training Club OMG Leslie had been working on the concept of a positively motivated recall for years and had just put her training concepts in book and video form. After apprenticing directly with Leslie I knew we needed this class here in the Bradenton Sarasota area. Really Reliable Recall is offered as a sixweek course at SOTC. The class intentionally is kept small in order to provide plenty of time for each dog and handler to practice and receive personalized instruction in the concepts being taught. Most canine students come to class with a history of ignoring their owners calls to come or at best they have been very inconsistent with their responses. It is a joy to see this behavior turned around quickly with management and positive motivation By the end of the six-week course nearly all off the dogs in the class show dramatic improvement. It is fun to hear of their progress at home and to see them racing to their handlers in class. Instead of a graduation ceremony the last class features a maze that challenges all the dogs to work their way to their handlers at the end. If you are interested in enrolling in the Really Reliable Recall class please check SOTC s Web site for upcoming dates and times by visiting www.sotcdogtraining. com obedience-classesA.asp. That means when the food is eaten it is not burned off by a fast metabolism leading to fat deposition. Because the metabolism slows post spay the patient should be fed less food. Most likely what you are seeing is skin hanging down from the fat that is being deposited. This is a pendulous abdomen. On the bright side your cat is not ill and there was no surgical error that should cause you any concern. Dr. Reinhart we had our cat spayed just a little over a year ago and now we are seeing changes in her that deeply concern us. In her abdominal area just where she had her surgery her stomach hangs down a lot. It is large and almost drags to the floor. We think this is related to the surgery. Did someone do something wrong --Jeffery Well Jeffery there are a lot of things that can cause a big abdomen. The real question to consider is this Is what you are seeing an enlarged swollen abdomen or is this a pendulous abdomen A swollen abdomen could be from fluid a condition that is called peritonitis. This is related to infection (common to the cat is a virus called FIP) a tumor right heart failure constipation or just plain fat. Enlargement of an organ like the liver will make the abdomen swell as well. Several of these conditions can be life threatening and will need appropriate investigation. But in truth I think what you are seeing is a pendulous abdomen. This can occur on its own or it also could have been related to the spay--related not because of an error but because of the hormonal (endocrinological) consequences to the loss of the ovaries. You see the metabolism is related to the Q A Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Dr. Reinhart our dog has to get a lot of dental treatments and we are trying to decrease the tartar that makes these treatments necessary. Is there anything we can do --Mark Mark there are several products on the market that say they help decrease tartar... some work some don t. There also are a lot of chew devices made that purport to assist in oral hygiene but controversy abounds with them as well. Dog chews including nylon bones rawhide bones and knots processed bones antlers hooves and rubber bones have been reported to do little to reduce plaque yet their physical abrasion is what is needed. If you were to brush your dog s teeth besides the effect of the toothpaste the physical abrasion of the effort is a main- stay in helping to reduce tartar build up. It s true that bones also can be abrasive but the danger of splintering with intestinal laceration or obstruction is prohibitive. There is a dog food called t d that is designed to break and scrape the teeth when chewed decreasing plaque. This product in fact has shown clinical significance. There also are gels and water additives that contain Chlorhexidine that will kill the bacteria in the mouth and they have been proven effective to an extent. In general there is no silver bullet and the market is full of things that may prove to be a waste of your money. Having your dog s teeth ultrasonically scaled is one of the best ways to clear the tartar and achieve a healthy oral atmosphere. Still purchasing products that safely provide physical abrasion also can be extremely helpful. Photo by Connie Summers elle a 10-year-old Pit mix lived most of her life surrounded by love generously offered by an older woman who passed away not long ago. Her son was unable to take care of the dog and Belle eventually was confiscated by animal services. After she was pulled by a local animal group a malignant tumor was found on her back. Belle not only was ill she no longer had loving arms to embrace her or a place to call home. Snickers is a 17-year-old Beagle mix that was lost in a storm and brought to Hillsborough County Animal Services. When his family was located instead of bringing him home they signed papers to have him euthanized. Abandoned by the people he loved most in the world Snickers suffers from a congenital disorder called Cherry eye that has seriously affected his vision. Frankie is a 15-year-old Dachshund that was well loved--and well fed--by two older women. When one of his owners died and his other mother was placed in a nursing home other family members were unable to take him in. In need of extensive dental work Frankie was alone and homeless for the first time in his life. Three heartbreaking stories...and sadly there are thousands more like these to share. In what has been coined a throw-away society it seems senior dogs--in alarming numbers--are the innocent victims of this vicious and increasingly widespread malady. After years of offering loyalty devotion and unconditional love far too many older dogs are being tossed aside or--even worse--euthanized for the most senseless of reasons. In communities throughout the country animal groups are valiantly trying to address the issue. But the expenses for caring for senior dogs as well as limited space to provide long-term housing at small shelters that are struggling to survive has left countless older dogs abandoned afraid and without hope. Vintage Paws Sanctuary a 501(c)(3) organization that operates at ACE Pet Resort in Sarasota is committed to restoring hope... one dog at a time. Although Vintage Paws wasn t officially established as a nonprofit organization until earlier this year providing a sanctuary for senior dogs always has been an integral part of ACE Pet Resort s operations since the award-winning day care and overnight boarding facility located at 7950 SR 72 (Clark Road) in Sarasota first opened. Co-owned and operated by Jennifer Hummel ACE Pet Resort has set new levels of excellence in away-from-home pet care in our community since officially opening its doors in 2004. Winner of Best Overnight Pet Care at Sarasota Pet s Choice Awards and the Nattie Awards for three years in a row ACE also consistently has received recognition for its day care services. This year the facility also received a first-place award for ACE at Your Place the brand new at-home pet-sitting service Jennifer launched last year. 42 Offering Silver Linings for Silver Paws August September 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet There is good reason for all of these accolades which represent enthusiastic nods from hundreds of community pet owners for nearly a decade ACE Pet Resort has cultivated and upheld a steadfast reputation for its unparalleled accommodations for their beloved animals. Located outside of hurricane evacuation zones ACE Pet Resort is open seven days per week (excluding some holidays) and welcomes pets of all temperaments. Staffed by a dedicated team of animal lovers--all certified in American Red Cross Pet CPR--the facility offers secure indoor and outdoor play areas for short- and long-term visitors private yet spacious accommodations for overnight guests and numerous amenities that make a stay at ACE Pet Resort second to none. In addition to cats and dogs ACE Pet Resort also boards birds gerbils ferrets squirrel monkeys exotics and yes--even skunks upon request. Only reptiles that have specific heat-lamp requirements are not able to board here. Achieving 1 status is never easy maintaining that level of excellence is even more challenging. But time and time again--with filled-to-capacity bookings and holiday reservations nine months or more in advance--Jennifer and her team have proven that it can be done. Recently celebrating its ninth anniversary on July 4 ACE Pet Resort is well known throughout the local animal community for always extending a warm welcome to senior dogs who through no fault of their own are no longer wanted or whose owners can no longer provide proper care. There hardly has been a time in the facility s history that one or more senior dogs couldn t be found snoozing in Jennifer s office greeting guests at the front door or basking in the sun outdoors. Jennifer s office is in fact filled with photographs of all of the senior dogs that have been part of the ACE family through the years. Some are still living there others sadly have journeyed to The Rainbow Bridge. All are remembered by name and each and every one holds a special place in Jennifer s heart. Two adorable Bichon Frise seniors Sophie and Maggie lived out their final days at ACE when their elderly owners became overwhelmed by the increasing complexity of their care. When the owners who frequently brought the dogs to ACE for day care and overnight stays mentioned that euthanasia seemed to be their only option Jennifer quickly came to the rescue and offered to keep the dogs and provide the medical care they needed. Sophie and Maggie lived contentedly at ACE for nearly four years before they passed and during that time their owners often stopped in to visit with them. Grateful for the professional care and support the dogs received Maggie and Sophie s parents made continuous financial contributions to Vintage Paws. And then there was Bob a Lab mix who first arrived at ACE Pet Resort when he was 13 years old. Bob came from a difficult situation at a time when it seemed like he was too old for a new start Jennifer says. But Bob went on to spend half a decade as the focal point of a whole team s love and affection. In March 2012 Bob died at the age of 17. Because of ACE Pet Resort and Vintage Paws Sanctuary Bob s story did not end tragically instead he was given a silver lining that allowed him to live out his final days with dignity and surrounded by love. Many times throughout its history ACE Pet Resort has served as a temporary home for animals that have been taken in by different rescue groups in our community. We have fostered dogs for both Satchel s Last Resort Sanctuary and Kickapoo Rescue and we frequently have provided temporary housing for Greyhounds from Racing Dog Rescue Project (RDRP) Jennifer says some of the dogs lived here for nearly a year. In fact in January 2010 ACE Pet Resort willingly Continued on Page 44 Above Jennifer Hummel co-owner of ACE Pet Resort and founder of Vintage Paws Sanctuary sits in the memorial garden with Frankie and Scotty two of Vintage Paws residents. It was lost revenue for the facility because of the space that could not be filled by paying guests but yet another testament to ACE Pet Resort s commitment to the well-being of all animals. With a long and impressive legacy of caring for older animals applying for 501(c)(3) status earlier this year was a much-needed step to finally realize Jennifer s vision of launching a nonprofit group for senior dogs at ACE Pet Resort. Vintage Paws Sanctuary was established with the most noble mission and purpose to ensure that no senior dog dies alone. To that end a loving environment is provided for older dogs whose owners either have passed away or have been placed in an assisted-living facility or nursing home that does not allow the residents to keep their pets. The sanctuary also takes in senior dogs that have been picked up or brought to animal services but have been passed over by other shelters or animal groups because of their age or medical conditions. Jennifer s compassion for older dogs emanates from a heartbreaking experience she endured when she was just 16 years old. My mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness when I was just a teenager Jennifer recalls with sadness. At the time we had three senior dogs of our own. Realizing how difficult it would be for my sister and me to not only take care of ourselves but also the dogs once she passed my mother decided--with great reluctance--to bring the dogs to an animal shelter in Bradenton shortly before her death. Because of the age and the health challenges of the family s pets Jennifer suspects that all three dogs were euthanized. That unforgettable experience inspired Jennifer to make it her lifetime commitment to never again give up on an older dog. Our goal at Vintage Paws is that every senior dog is given an opportunity to live out the life he or she deserves Jennifer says. I feel that these dogs--who have given unconditionally their entire lives and still have so much love and loyalty to offer--are entitled to not only live their final years surrounded by love but also to die with dignity. Senior dogs are so cool Jennifer adds. Sadly very few people are willing to invest time in them or are either unwilling or unable to afford their care. Personally I would take an older dog over a rambunctious puppy any day. Like many nonprofit animal organizations however Vintage Paws has limited space available for new residents but strives to help as many senior dogs as possible. We only accept dogs that we are confident we can help Jennifer says. If there is an older dog that we cannot take he or she is not just left behind and forgotten by networking with other rescue groups and animal advocates I try to find someone who is willing and can afford to help. Some of the dogs brought to Vintage Paws are given temporary shelter until new homes can be found for them others live out their remaining days at the sanctuary and are given boundless love and expert care. It s not just about saving these senior dogs Jennifer continues. We have to be able to care for them which not only involves providing food each day but also paying for age-related veterinary care that can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. And we are hoping that animal lovers in Sarasota and surrounding communities will realize that this is an urgent need dumping of senior dogs has become an epidemic and it must be addressed. Scotty a 10- to 12-year-old stray that was picked up by two good Samaritans after he was found running along University Parkway is a prime example of the monumental medical expenses that can be involved in caring for a throw-away dog. When Scotty was first brought to Vintage Paws he was being treated with chemotherapy for lymphoma by Dr. Heidi Ward at Gulfcoast Veterinary Oncology Internal Medicine. He also had a large cancerous growth on his face that turned out to be fibrosarcoma--a very aggressive form of cancer. Dr. John Kirsch of Coastal Veterinary Surgical Specialists Inc. was able to remove most of the growth which included removing a portion of his lip giving Scotty a unique perma-snarl. The growth began to return so Jennifer and Scotty traveled to the University of Florida in Gainesville once a week for five weeks for radiation treatments. Scotty is still receiving chemotherapy provided by Dr. Ward. Since February Scotty s medical bills have totaled approximately 7 000. But that has not deterred Jennifer from providing this amazing dog that is full of life with the love and care he needs. It only has inspired her to work harder to find the funding required to cover the costs of the senior dogs in her care. An amazing financial gift donated by a local veterinary specialist paid Scotty s chemotherapy bill in full and Jennifer is extremely grateful not only for this angel s generosity but also for the financial support of other animal lovers in our community. At left Snickers a 17-year-old Beagle mix was found wandering in a storm. He was brought to Hillsborough County Animal Services. Instead of claiming him the owner signed Snickers over for euthanasia. Snickers now has a forever home at Vintage Paws Sanctuary. At right one of the patio s memorial bricks. Photos by Connie Summers There is more--so much more--still to be done. But first things first. As part of her original initiative for establishing a sanctuary for senior dogs Jennifer has long envisioned creating a memorial garden on the property at ACE Pet Resort. Through the years some of our clients have asked us if they could bring their ill pets to ACE Pet Resort and have them euthanized beneath the trees on the property where the dogs spent so many happy hours playing Jennifer says. It seemed only fitting to create a memorial garden on the grounds. I ve always had the vision but I needed direction to get the project underway she adds. Jennifer contacted Lisa and Dave Burns owners of Backyard Getaway in Myakka City who also recently cofounded Re-Scape. com with their partner Brenda Ellison. As an online resource that focuses on using recycled and reimagined products to enhance natural surroundings Re-Scape. com s mission is to inspire involve and encourage everyone to support a more sustainable eco-friendly environment by using the materials that already surround us in everyday life. The Web site offers membership opportunities for people interested in receiving exclusive videos tutorials and other online materials that offer innovative ways to re-scape their personal living spaces. On April 20 in honor of Earth Day and to celebrate the official launch of Re-scape.com Lisa Dave and Brenda joined Jennifer and the staff at ACE Pet Resort along with friends family and community volunteers to begin building a memorial garden that was created and designed by Backyard Getaway. Dave led a hands-on class on how to install a dry creek bed that is surrounded by nontoxic Florida-friendly plants. To complement the memorial garden which is located at the front of ACE Pet Resort s property the Re-Scape.com team constructed a dog house foot bridge and bench from re-purposed pallets left-over metal roofing and other recycled materials. The bench sits atop a brick patio that includes memorial bricks to honor living pets or pay tribute to pets that have passed on. With the nine acres of property that ACE Pet Resort owns on Clark Road there is plenty of room available on site to realize Jennifer s ultimate vision for the newly founded sanctuary which is to build a free-standing retirement center for Vintage Paws seniors. My goal is to provide our dogs with a stand-alone living area their own comfortable home with a fenced-in play area that is separate from ACE Pet Resort she says. Finding the needed funding to begin building the new structure is another challenge that Jennifer is willing to tackle. Continued on Page 46 At left Little One is an 11-year-old Rottweiler with severe arthritis that has made walking impossible. Photo by Connie Summers 45 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet www.SarasotaPet.com Continued from page 45 While applying for grants as a nonprofit organization is an option Jennifer plans to host fund-raisers in the near future. She also is already on board to participate next year in The 36-Hour Giving Challenge--an online fund-raising event that is a collaborative effort of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County the Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Manatee Community Foundation. In March 2013 The 36-Hour Giving Challenge raised more than 2.7 million for 287 local nonprofits this year. There also are giving opportunities now available for community residents interested in supporting the heartwarming--and lifesaving--efforts of Vintage Paws Sanctuary. Donations can be made online at www.vintagepaws.org. Every financial contribution helps Vintage Paws Sanctuary provide food and ongoing veterinary care for its residents. Community pet owners who would like to honor one of their four-legged companions or create a lasting tribute to a pet that has passed can buy a brick for the Vintage Paws memorial garden. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the purchase of the bricks--which are priced at 50 each--will directly benefit the senior dogs in Vintage Paws care. The bricks along with tee shirts and baseball caps embroidered with the Vintage Paws logo can be purchased online at www.vintagepaws.org. The Vintage Paws logo was generously donated to the sanctuary by Michele Chilson www.graphic-guru.com. While Vintage Paws Sanctuary is fortunate to have four volunteers who come regularly to the Clark Road boarding facility to take the dogs for walks and provide them with one-on-one attention additional volunteers always are needed. Teenagers At around 10 to 12 years of age Scotty pictured above has undergone chemotherapy and radiation for two cancers. Despite his unique perma-snarl he is a happy and playful Vintage Paws resident. Photo by Connie Summers 16 years of age and older who have parental approval also are welcome to volunteer. Foster families for the sanctuary s adoptable dogs also are needed. If we can find adopters or long-term foster parents who can care for our senior dogs until they are adopted we can free up space at the sanctuary and take in more dogs Jennifer says. Jennifer is quick to give a shout out to the team at ACE Pet Resort who in addition to their regular duties have willingly taken on the responsibility of caring for the senior dogs she has brought to the sanctuary and even more importantly have wholeheartedly offered them never-ending love. Everyone on ACE s team has a soft spot for older dogs she says they are quick to welcome our newest arrivals and provide such loving care to each and every one of our residents. Perhaps most telling of the love and compassion found here is a recent message on Vintage Paws Facebook page that was posted in early June after an abandoned dog was found and brought to the sanctuary. The dog who was named Giselle was so severely matted that she had trouble walking and seeing. In addition her nails were so long they intertwined with the matted fur on her feet. The Facebook post which described the dog s deplorable condition in detail ended with this simple yet stirring message that--in just 10 words--clearly says it all Welcome home sweetheart you are a Vintage Paws resident now. Vintage Paws Sanctuary is located at ACE Pet Resort 7950 SR 72 (Clark Road) in Sarasota. For additional information to volunteer or to make a donation please call 941-921-4355 or visit www.vintagepaws.org. We have a special relationship with the local rescues and help out when we are able. We always seem to have a dog at our facility that is available for adoption. Although food donations in our community have been down this year K9 Korral has donated more than two tons of food to our local rescue groups in the last three years. One of our greatest successes has been our post-adoption training program. Community residents that adopt a dog from a local nonprofit rescue organization or from animal services in Sarasota and Manatee counties will receive a free training session at our facility which is located at 2001 Princeton Street in Sarasota. This offer extends up to 30 days from the pet s date of adoption. This post-adoption training class get pet owners off to a good start. We answer questions and offer important advice to help new family members get settled in their forever homes. As part of our community outreach K9 Korral offers discounted obedience classes for families that adopt dogs from our local animal groups and we also give each family a free bag of dog food. Our mission is to keep adopted pets in their forever homes and reduce the number of dogs that are returned to shelters and rescue groups. We also strive to educate people in becoming responsible pet owners and focus on giving them the skills they need to promote good manners in their dogs. At K9 Korral we also offer a Last Chance training session. This class is designed to help people that have adopted a dog but are at the point of returning him or her to a rescue organization. The Last Chance training session has helped minimize the number of pets that are being returned to area shelters. It is by far the most meaningful dog training class that we offer. It is so heartwarming to see that tail wagging when a dog stays with a forever family and is not returned to the shelter. We recently had an opportunity to conduct one of these training sessions with Tim a detective whose family adopted and then returned Bruno to a local shelter. Tami who works with Sarasota County Animal Services called us to see if we would do a Last Chance training session with Tim s family. Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet are pleased to include Bark (& Purr) Out Loud a special feature that spotlights important events & happenings in our local pet community. If it s making headlines you ll read about it here K9 Korral to the Rescues K9 Korral--The Institute of Canine Behavior located at 2001 Princeton Street in Sarasota. Photo courtesy of K9 Korral Tim went back to the shelter to get Bruno and brought him to K9 Korral. We introduced our house cat to Bruno. Every time Bruno would go at Oreo we would tell him to leave it then spray Pet Corrector (a training device that emits a loud blast of compressed air) repeating the command until Bruno finally got the message. After the training was complete Bruno returned home to Tim s family where he remains their best friend to this day. Not all Last Chance training sessions have happy endings. However they always end in the way that is best for both the dog and the family members. Bringing an Adopted Dog Into Your Family & Your Home Prior to the adoption process most rescue groups in our community introduce the new dog to members of the household at their facilities if they have one. If there is another dog in the household it always is best to introduce the new dog and the family dog on neutral territory. It also is important to look for the signals that the dogs are giving off during their first encounters. It may be play with a play stance or it could be an alert such as a tail held in a vertical position. Red flags that signal incompatibility could include certain types of snarls hackling up or simply an obvious and complete disliking for the other dog. It is important for the dogs to greet from the hindquarters before allowing any direct eye contact. Then keep the dogs eye contact brief. If all goes well and you take your new friend home try letting the new dog into your home first. Pick up all high-value toys such as real bones prior to your arrival. If in doubt call a reputable positive dog trainer to help you during this transitional period. Now give your dogs a hug and treat them well they are only with us a very short period of time.
