By Dr. Anne Elisabeth Chauvet Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC Q. What is GDV Author s Note I hope you enjoyed our questionnaire on pet awareness in the last issue. Here is a brief summary of the questions and the answers with explanations. Q. Pet ownership and wellness. What is the best dog breed for a 75 year old with a disability Studies show that pet ownership reduces stress and prolongs life. However it is important to match our pet to our needs and our abilities. For example I love cats but my allergies prevent me from having more than one. My older mother probably cannot handle a Jack Russell or a herding dog due to their great need to be outdoors and run. Perhaps this is why toy breeds (such as a Chihuahua) are so popular hiding in our pockets walked in carriages and more. GDV (gastric dilatation and volvulus) is a common problem in deep-chested dogs. The stomach that hides behind the last few ribs can twist (torse) in these breeds. This generally can occur when meals are followed by exercise. As you can imagine the stomach bounces in the abdomen during these activities. Once torsed gas from digestion builds up and the stomach expands (dilates). Stomachs also can dilate without torsing. A torsion requires surgery. A simple dilatation can be managed medically. Dr. Anne Elisabeth Chauvet Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC Q. Tracheal collapse. Q. What is pancreatitis Pancreatitis can be fatal and can be caused by a change in diet a fatty diet viral infections bacterial infections and stress. Steroidal medication can contribute to pancreatitis although it is not as much a factor in developing the condition as previously thought. Tracheal collapse is a narrowing of the windpipe. It either can be a portion of the trachea or the entire organ. Patients cough with a deep cough that sounds like a duck or goose. If the collapse is severe the patient even can turn blue. This can be managed with minimally invasive procedures using stents and the patients recover well. require an emergency vet visit at 11 p.m. for masses and diarrhea. Nevertheless the relationship the child has with his or her pet is one that will be cherished for a lifetime. Q. Diabetes mellitus. Q. Blocked urethra. Male cats can build crystals in their urine which can block the urethra. Then they cannot urinate so there is back up and the bladder distends becoming painful. The cat keeps trying to urinate. Eventually toxins build up in the body and the patient gets very sick vomits and becomes weak. This can take place in a few hours. So if your cat is straining to urinate crying out and seems uncomfortable take him to your vet or the local ER right away. Diabetes mellitus is common in cats and in dogs like people. It is a lack of insulin in the body and thus glucose (blood sugar) increases. Insulin is responsible for helping deliver glucose to the body. Without the glucose most organs weaken. This is very manageable with an insulin injection once or twice a day. The first signs are urinating and drinking a lot. A blood test can diagnose the problem. Treated early and managed regularly diabetic patients can lead a great life. Q. Pets and swallowed objects Dogs and cats will eat just about anything so watch out Congratulations Valerie W. from Sarasota the winner of the Pet Ownership IQ Quiz. Valerie was the first contestant to provide us with a correct answer to each question. The winner was presented with a gift basket compliments of Critical Care and Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota. Smith DVM Sarasota Veterinary Center true emergency situation for your pet commonly known as bloat develops when his or her stomach fills with air and then twists. This internal turning as the stomach blows up with air essentially twists the entrance and exit from the stomach closed so that there is no place for the air to go. This condition mostly occurs in large deep-chested dogs in which there is more room internally for the enlarged stomach to turn and flip over. A dog that develops this condition often will have a very large abdomen and will looks like he has swallowed a beach ball. A factors that can be minimized to try and protect your pet from ever developing this condition. These risk factors include Eating too quickly Eating only one meal a day Eating or drinking a large volume of food or water at one time Exercising or being too active immediately following a meal Eating foods known to cause gas formation Most of these factors can be controlled if the owner feeds his or her pet twice daily does not allow exercise after a meal and does not permit the animal to eat or drink too much at one time or to drink a lot of water before or after a meal. Pet owners also can minimize risks by discouraging pets from rolling over or exercising for at least one hour after a meal and eliminating inappropriate foods that cause gas. For dogs that tend to gulp down their Dr. David T. Smith Sarasota Veterinary Center. Photo by Keith Millard Early Signs & Symptoms One of the first things a pet owner will notice in a pet that has developed bloat is that the animal is standing or moving around strangely and is trying to vomit. Bloat is a medical emergency that can lead to death in as little as two to four hours. Nothing however is produced except perhaps some saliva or foam. Other common symptoms can include excessive drooling weakness and staggering whining standing with legs spread apart pale gums rapid short breaths rapid heart rate and finally collapse. If you note any of these symptoms please get your pet to a veterinarian immediately the clock is ticking and this condition can be fatal. Bloat is a medical emergency that can lead to death in as little as two to four hours. Even with rapid emergency medical attention as many as one in three dogs die as a result of this condition which is medically known as gastric volvulusdilatation syndrome or GDV. food slow food consumption by dividing the meal into five parts and giving the dog one fifth of the meal every 10 minutes. There also are food bowls now available that have been specially designed with rubber columns that force dogs to eat more slowly by having to pick and lick the food from around the columns. Who s at Risk a radiograph to see if the stomach has indeed turned. A tube may have to be inserted down your dog s throat to relieve the pressure. Sometimes the dilatation is too advanced to pass a tube and a needle is used. This is because the pressure of the swollen stomach can affect the organs and especially the blood flow to the organs causing shock and leading to death. Surgery is required to correct a turned stomach but is generally recommended in all cases because during a surgical procedure the stomach can be sutured to the side of the body to prevent a recurrence. In closing be alert for the symptoms described here but especially if you own an at-risk breed. Some owners of highly susceptible breeds protect their pets by having the preventative surgery (known as a gastropexy) performed...just to be safe. Discuss this option with your veterinarian if you have any questions or you think your dog may be at risk. Dr. David T. Smith has been a veterinarian in Florida for 26 years. His practice is the Sarasota Veterinary Center on Cattlemen Road south of Bee Ridge Road and next to Burlington Coat Factory. He also was the medical director of two emergency and critical care centers as well as several veterinary hospitals in Broward County. Dr. Smith can be reached by phone at 941-377-3031 for questions or inquiries or contacted online at www.drdavedvm.com. Minimizing Risk Factors Any dog who eats too fast can suffer this condition but several breeds that are at a higher risk include the Great Dane Rottweiller German Shepherd Boxer and Labrador Retriever. Knowing the symptoms to be on the lookout for and whether or not your dog s breed is more susceptible will allow you to seek treatment more quickly. Rill Jr. VMD University Animal Clinic A lthough Halloween is a fun-filled holiday for adults and children the costumes decorations noises and treats may become either frightening or dangerous for our pets. Pets can look adorable in their Halloween outfits and many pets tolerate the attention and attire well. Consider avoiding a costume if your pet acts intimidated and uncomfortable. All costumes or decorations must avoid restriction of motion vision or hearing. Ties or fasteners must not choke or constrict breathing if they become entangled. Pets paraded in public should be equipped with a collar and ID (preferably a microchip) in case they escape should they become confused and or threatened by a ghost or goblin. Consider adding reflective strips or approved blinkers to your pet s Halloween costumes to make them more easily visible in the dark. However don t be tempted to dye or apply coloring to your pet s fur. Even if the dye is labeled nontoxic to humans it could still be harmful to pets. Pets that are socially timid or protectively aggressive should spend this holiday indoors to avoid any stressful confrontations. Candles and candlelit decorations may pose possible fire or burn risks for your pets. Keep in mind that some animals are fascinated with glow sticks and glow jewelry. Although these are not highly toxic a pet who bites into these items will suffer pain mucous membrane irritation and salivation from the contents. If entertaining trick or treaters in your neighborhood be aware that outdoor noises fireworks and the constant ringing of the door bell can be stressful for many pets. It may be helpful to confine these pets to a distant room with familiar distracting sounds from the television or radio. Above all the biggest concern for pets on Halloween is what they ingest. It is not well known but the week of Halloween is the busiest week of the year at the Pet Poison Control Hotline. At the top of the list is CHOCOLATE The darker and more bitter the chocolate the more toxic it is. Illness and toxicity are dependent on the type of chocolate the amount consumed and the size of the pet. Sugarless candies often contain Xylitol which is equally toxic to pets. Remember that pets DO NOT unwrap treats but will ingest foil and cellophane which can lead to intestinal obstruction. Generally speaking candy and treats Dr. Robert W. Rill Jr. of University Animal Clinic. Photo courtesy of University Animal Clinic that are high in fats may induce pancreatitis or gastroenteritis especially in smaller pets. Some folks offer mini-boxes of raisins as a healthier alternative to sugar-laden treats. Very small amounts of raisins or grapes can produce kidney failure even in a large pet. To help make your holiday with the Night Creatures a fun safe experience we would suggest the following Keep your cherished pets safely away from any access to all Halloween candy and treats. Be proactive to help your pet avoid spooky or stressful encounters. The disease easily is spread through direct contact between cats but physical contact is not necessary. The virus can be projected via a sneeze. It also can be transported on objects such as toys kennels food bowls or human hands and clothes. By Tamara Powell DVM VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital F eline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR) also known as feline herpesvirus-1 is one of the most common upper respiratory diseases affecting cats and kittens. The disease can affect the nose ( rhino ) or the throat ( tracheitis ). It also very commonly affects the eyes. How Common is the Disease What are the Symptoms The most common symptoms of FVR are sneezing and red watery eyes. You also may notice coughing a change in your cat s meow or squinting of the eyes. Nasal and ocular discharge may progress from clear to thick with a yellow or green tinge. Commonly the eyelids become red and swollen a condition that is known as conjunctivitis. FVR may cause ulcers or small abrasions on the surface of the eyes which can be painful and affect vision sometimes permanently. Who is at Risk Once a cat is infected he or she will carry the virus his or her entire life. In fact there is evidence that a large segment of the feline population carries the virus. The disease may show varying degrees of severity between individual cats. Most cats will carry the virus in a latent state. This means that the infection is essentially dormant not causing any symptoms. The virus is not typically contagious among other cats when there are no symptoms but this is not always the case. Cats who carry the virus also may have a flare-up or recurrence of disease symptoms later in life. Some individuals are prone to having frequent flare-ups. Dr. Tamara Powell VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital All cats are susceptible to infections with FVR. Kittens are at a high risk due to the immaturity of their immune systems. There also is an increased risk for any cat What is the Treatment It is common for secondary bacterial infections to occur with this virus and therefore antibiotics often are needed. If left untreated some infections can make a cat very ill requiring supportive care or even hospitalization. Eye medicines and nose drops commonly are used. Certain antihistamines also may help. Many cats also can benefit from a nutritional supplement called L-lysine both during a flare-up and afterwards to help prevent a reoccurrence. Your veteriAt left squinting is one of the symptoms of feline viral rhinotracheitis a common upper respiratory disease in cats that also can cause sneezing coughing nasal and ocular discharge and red watery eyes. If your cat is experiencing any of these symptoms make an appointment with your veterinarian. Photo 123rf.com Kurhan narian will recommend the best course of treatment for your cat. Since cats often have a decreased sense of smell or a sore throat during illness they may eat less. Feeding soft canned food with a strong aroma can help to stimulate appetite. Increasing humidity also may be helpful. This can be done via a plain (nonmedicated) vaporizer or by allowing the cat to spend 5 to 10 minutes in a steamy room (for example in the bathroom after someone in your family has taken a hot shower). Can FVR Be Prevented The best way to prevent the disease is to prevent your cat from coming into contact with the virus. However full avoidance is not always possible. Cats are not routinely tested for the disease due to false negative results that occur when the disease is in the latent state. Fortunately there is a vaccine option as part of your cat s routine veterinary care. While the vaccine cannot fully prevent an infection if there is an exposure it can help to minimize symptoms and shorten the course of the disease. By declawing your dog you will remove the threat of hurting babies small children or the elderly. And a few ailments such as arthritis joint pain and lameness are nothing compared to peace of mind...right WRONG No one would ever think of declawing his or her dog. It would be out of the question cruel and inhumane So why then are we able to turn our heads when it comes to declawing our cats If you have ever declawed a cat or are thinking about it please read this article. You owe it to yourself and most importantly to your cat. Onychectomy known as declawing is an operation to surgically remove an animal s claws by means of amputation of all or part of the distal phalanges or end bones of the animal s toes. This alone should stop us but it doesn t. Why According to Dr. Christianne Schelling Declawing is literally maiming a cat a mistake that can lead to physical emo- tional and behavioral complications. It is erroneous to think that declawing a cat is a trivial procedure similar to trimming fingernails. A cat s claws are a vital part of its anatomy essential to balance mobility and survival. (http www.catscratching. com ) Potential complications of declawing include pain post-surgical complications joint stiffness arthritis litter box aversion increased aggression biting and death. (http www.pawproject.com faqs) In fact declawed cats can become so traumatized by this painful mutilation that they end up spending their maladjusted lives perched on top of refrigerators or other high places. With no adequate defense they remain out of reach from real Shelley Thayer Executive Director Cat Depot and imaginary predators. The number one reason people give up their cats is for urination outside the box. Declawed cats with paw sensitivity issues may find it painful to use the litter box. Since declawed cats often are associated with this problem some animal shelters are no longer admitting declawed cats into their systems. Another side effect of declawing cats is biting. Left without claws for physical stretching play scratching or defense cats may take up a secondary form of resistance or aggression and use their teeth. Scratching is not a behavioral problem but a natural and necessary physical function. It removes the 18 dead outer sheaths of the nail and is a vital exercise that stretches and strengthens the upper body. Cats mark their territory visually especially in multi-cat households as a way of determining rank. The cat s toes have scent glands enabling them to leave their signature by scratching. It is a source of communication health and security. Cats should never be declawed as a preventative measure to scratching. The majority of cats given proper scratching posts will use them. Even if a cat does develop an undesirable scratching habit it is one of the easiest behaviors to correct. Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association opposes surgical procedures performed on a companion animal solely for the cosmetic preference or convenience of the caregiver. This includes declawing or tendonectomy of cats. The Humane Society of the United States ASPCA Best Friends Animal Society American Humane Association Photo above center Declawing a cat is equivalent to amputating all of the fingertips of a human hand at the first knuckle. Laser surgery often considered less evasive still removes the entire end bone and can cause debilitating physical emotional and behavioral complications. Photo BigStockPhoto. com Denis Nata. At left cats can be trained to scratch posts instead of home furnishings with patience it is an easy behavior to correct. Photo BigStockPhoto.com Digidesign October November 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Cat Depot and leading animal shelters across the country agree that alternatives are needed to declawing cats. Veterinarians and clinics in 33 states in our nation agree and declawing cats now is unlawful in 25 countries including Australia Austria Belgium Brazil Denmark England Finland France Germany Ireland Israel Italy Japan Netherlands New Zealand Northern Ireland Norway Portugal Scotland Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland and Wales. Here are seven simple tips to prevent a lifetime of problems for you and your cat. Trim nails often (start when kittens are young use a towel wrap to reduce stress) Provide vertical and horizontal scratching posts and scratching mats Use double-sided sticky tape on furniture when training Apply SoftPaws while training Plug in Phermones (Feliway) or use Calming Collars Provide emery scratching boards Train your cat--yes cats are smart For more information about the dangers of declawing visit www.catdepot.org click on Resources Declawing Cats. Cooper is one of those dogs that can thank agility for getting him a good home. He came to Gill through Sylvia King of Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue in Virginia. Sylvia is credited with helping Gill develop an interest in agility with the first Border Collie she had adopted from Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue named Westley. A soft dog who did not immediately take to the sport Westley has since developed into a great agility dog in his own right. Before long Gill was hooked on agility and was now looking for a dog with the focus and drive to excel. Originally Cooper was owned by someone who recognized that he was too much dog for the family. Sylvia had Cooper transported to her from the original owner by the Virginia Tech Ultimate Frisbee Team and then contacted Gill to let her know she had a good companion dog for Westley who by the way would make a great agility dog. Gill drove up to Virginia to meet Cooper and decided to adopt him. Cooper had no training except that he had been taught not to jump up on people. He also screamed every time he was placed in his crate. But his potential to become an agility champion was immediately apparent. From the very beginning Cooper worked well at a great distance from Gill. He is a natural who needs only subtle signals to guide him around even the most complex agility course. Cooper loves an audience and at his first agility trial in March 2007 he visited everyone in the ring including the judge timer scribe and several bar setters. Cooper enjoys a wide range of activities. He loves to play Frisbee just for fun and he also enjoys dock diving and herding. He also likes playing at the beach and body surfing. 20 C Cooper is as versatile an agility dog as you will ever find holding championship titles from the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Performance Events (CPE) the North American Dog Agility Council (NADAC) and the United States Dog Agility Association Hera Kai and COZ (USDAA). OceanWolf Agility From AKC Cooper has earned four Master Agility Championships (MACH) from CPE he has his Agility Trial Championship (C-ATCH) and Agility Team Extraordinaire (C-ATE) from NADAC he holds the Agility Trial Championship (NATCH) and the Versatility Championship (Vers NATCH) and from USDAA he has earned his Bronze ADCH. Cooper attended the AKC National Championship in 2011 and 2013 the USDAA Cynosport World Games in 2010--where he finished fourth in team gamblers--and in 2011 the CPE Nationals in 2010--where he was High-in-Trial at standard level 5--as well as in 2012 and 2013--where he won first place for 20-inch Veteran s Games. In addition to his titles in agility Cooper also has a rally advanced title in rally obedience and has tried his paw at flyball but Gill did not like all the noise of the sport. Gill teaches daytime and evening classes at Red Hot Agility in Archer Florida near Gainesville and at G2 Dog Sports in Morriston Florida just outside of Ocala. She is an apprentice CPE judge and will take the AKC judge s course this year. Gill and Cooper are regular competitors at agility trials in the Sarasota area. With all this activity Gill is lucky to get a few hours sleep before she hears Cooper s call You up Photo top left Cooper leaping sky high to catch his favorite soft Frisbee. Adding too much can deplete the oxygen which could kill your fish. There are many algaecides on the market that are safe for Koi as well as for your other pets including cats and dogs who may drink from the pond. Be sure to read the label carefully. If there is a lot of dead algae in the pond be sure to remove it as it can cause additional water-quality issues. the August September issue of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet we discussed natural ways to control algae in your Koi pond. To re-cap make sure your pond filter system is adequate add beneficial bacteria regularly add plants (especially oxygenating ones) and do not over stock or over feed your Koi. We also discussed the three most common algae green water algae filamentous algae and string algae. There are several remedies that can be applied to your pond in addition to the natural steps you are taking to keep your pond healthy if you are still having algae issues. If you have filamentous algae or so much string algae that the pond is not enjoyable for you any more you can use fish-safe algaecides to control the algae. Algaecides can be used as a part of a regular maintenance routine. It is important to follow the directions Lisa Burns co-owner of Backyard Getaway in Myakka City however the particles have settled and the water is clear then you have floating or filamentous algae. Tackling Green Water Algae An option for green water algae is to install a UV clarifier. This will clear up the green water within five days and keep it clear up to a year when it will be time to change the UV bulb. It s important to note that UVs only work on green water algae not string or floating algae. Although UV clarifiers are very popular for Koi keepers many people do not like the idea of using them because the clarifiers can kill the good and bad bacteria if it is too large for the pond in which it is installed. If you are unsure if your water is truly green or if it is a reflection from floating particles or hair algae growing on the sides take the glass test. Fill a clear glass with pond water let it sit 15 to 20 minutes undisturbed. If the water is still green you have green water algae. If What s New in Algae Control The Ion Generator electronic clarifier is the latest development in algae control. It is a simple piece of equipment that is installed in line between your pump and water output. The Ion Generator electronic clarifier reduces pond maintenance and provides crystal-clear water without chemicals. A microprocessor inside the control panel causes the outermost atoms of copper silver and zinc to lose an electron creating a positive ion that will try to flow from one probe to the other. The ion is actually swept away by the flow of water which helps to clean the water. One unit will work on a pond up to 25 000 gallons using much less wattage than a UV clarifier with no impact to the fish or beneficial bacteria. Remember some algae in your pond is beneficial and will help create a balanced eco system and a healthy environment for your finned pets. Not knowing what has happened to the precious kitty can cause much anguish and the grief and sorrow that follows can linger for years if the cat is never found. Even while the pet owner may suspect that illness or old age motivated the cat to go missing it does not make it any easier. Cuddles was 16 years old when she disappeared. I remember that morning well. I had let her out at 4 a.m. which was her usual time to go out and when finished she always would return swiftly scratching on the sliding glass door of my bedroom to be let back in. Unfortunately on this particular morning Cuddles did not return and after weeks of searching she was never found. Cuddles was getting old she was looking feeble and wanted to spend more and more time outdoors at night relaxing on the small stones in the rock garden that had been warmed all day by the sun. I had a suspicion that something was amiss with her health but felt it was best to let her relax and heal herself in her own way. After all I had taken her to the veterinarian a week prior to her disappearance and was told that she was just getting old and there was nothing to indicate that she was seriously ill. Generally I have noticed that when telling of a pet s disappearance people s reactions will either be sympathetic or downright cruel. So it always is wise to discern whether it s worth sharing the information and with whom. I recall notifying my neighbors of my pet s disappearance and I also was told by some that my pet was probably torn to pieces by vicious raccoons. Another neighbor went as far as to show me what she thought were large claw marks on her garage door and suggested that the marks belonged to the animal that took the life of my cat. Later it would be discovered that the claw marks were nothing more than wheel marks from her self-propelled lawn mower. Sadly these conversations continued for months after the loss it seemed as if my neighbors enjoyed adding more pain to my grief. As hard as it was for me to come to terms with her disappearance I had to take steps to lessen the pain heal and move forward. First I acknowledged that I could not change what had happened. Cuddles was gone and was never going to return. How I chose to remember her last moments was up to me. I could either let anguish and guilt control me or I could try to focus on the 16 wonderful years of unconditional love that she gave our family. Next I prayed that I would have peace and closure. Within a couple of days I dreamed that Cuddles was sleeping peacefully on my front doorstep. Her body Barbara Bounds Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory was fully restored without any sign of trauma. Without a doubt I had received the ultimate blessing of peace that I had requested. When a pet disappears there is no body to cremate or bury. That alone is immensely stressful. In my case I found the best photo I could of Cuddles and placed it in an attractive frame and affixed an engraved plaque with her name birth and disappearance date to the frame. This is the way I wanted to memorialize Cuddles. For me this was as comforting as having an urn that contained her cremains. The activities that I chose to bring comfort and healing may not be the same for another pet owner experiencing a similar loss. Choosing what personally brings you peace and comfort matters most. Losing a pet of any species is difficult. The guilt anguish and sorrow can last many years beyond the time of loss. Take time and reflect on the wonderful moments spent with your pet that were filled with much unconditional love and joy. As you do this your mind will begin to fill with only pleasant memories of your pet and the grief that once possessed your heart will gradually diminish. For 25 years Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory has been serving the veterinary and animal community on Florida s Gulf Coast by providing dignified after-care services that include pet cremations grief resources and personalized pet products. Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory is proud to celebrate the grand opening of its new larger pet memorial center which is located at 2122 Whitfield Park Avenue in Sarasota. Braden riVer equine we Provide quality equine Care in the field or at our Clinic digital radiography & ultrasound for horses Q A By Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Ask the Vet My fear is animals that I could save will be euthanized because pet owners cannot afford the cost of life-saving drugs. Sometimes it is difficult to find the strength to even come in to the practice. There are a variety of ways to decrease or defray your costs. There is a resource called Care Credit that will advance you the money on credit and push the payment out 6 to 12 months with NO INTEREST. This program can be used for medical care performed by dentists physicians and veterinarians. Another option is a wellness plan that we recently launched at our facility. With this type of plan all the wellness treatment your pet receives throughout the year-- including vaccines blood work and dental procedures--are combined into one fee paid out by Visa or bank draft monthly for 12 months. Some plans like the one we just initiated have perks that include a 20 co-pay for scheduled office calls for a year unlimited nail trims and 5 to 10 percent discounts on wellness products such as heartworm flea treatments and shampoos. There is an average savings of 200 to 300 each year and the impact is monthly not immediate. Another alternative is pet medical insurance. Often overlooked by pet owners an insurance policy could save thousands of dollars if a pet is injured or develops a major illness. I recently attended a seminar that detailed a typical case that was addressed by the three main pet insurance companies and I was impressed with the savings. The owners of the pet described in the case saved between 750 and 850 between two of the companies and as much as 1 900 through the third insurance company. As a result I feel there is one company that is superior to all the rest but it is unfair to name that company in this format. Hopefully we will get links to these companies on our Web site and clients can make their own decisions. Care Credit a wellness plan and pet insurance are three very viable options to assist in decreasing your pet s medical costs. You need to investigate which option--or which combination of options-- is right for you. Dr. Reinhart we have a wonderful Lab that has been our only family for four years but now our family is growing and we are expecting in five months. The cost of keeping our Lab healthy is increasing and with the change in our family status I am wondering if there is any way to decrease costs. --Robert Well Robert one of my biggest anxieties is the advancing costs for me to do what I do and the impact that has on my patients. Most of these cost increases such as lab fees and pharmaceuticals are beyond my control. A prime example seems to be the greed of drug companies. Our favorite response has been to go generic but there seems to be an issue where generic manufacturers are being bought up and the squeeze is being placed on this safe haven. The cost of Phenobarbital the main drug for epileptics has increased 10 fold. The price of Vitamin K1 which we use for rat poisoning also has skyrocketed. A 21-day supply that used to be priced at less than 50 recently cost one of my clients 960 Q Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Dr. Reinhart we were just asked by a friend if our dog was fully vaccinated. We thought he was but our friend said he isn t because we did not give our dog the Leptospirosis vaccine. Is this vaccine necessary --Jillian Yes Jillian it would be best if your dog had the Leptospirosis vaccine. I have addressed this before. This disease became an issue at the turn of the century when it originally was spread exclusively by rat urine but now also is being spread by raccoon possum and squirrel urine. Leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver failure which is fatal. I saw seven cases last year and four of the dogs died. There may be a remote chance that your dog could contract the disease but I had four dogs whose risk of contracting the disease was just as remote and those dogs are dead. Enough said. Fran Lindstrom president of SOTC and her Schipperke Rina have earned a record six Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) titles. Fran also is one of the Rally Obedience instructors at SOTC. Rally Obedience consists of a course of 10 to 20 signs (individual exercises stations) that the handler and dog must follow. In competition the judge will give the command Forward and the handler and dog will start the course Rally Obedience As ary exercises can include commands such as sit stand or down. A moving exercise is one that would as the name suggests involve movement. These exercises can include a left-about turn or a double turn and a slow or fast heel. All of the exercises in Rally Obedience are a fun way to teach and train dogs while practicing various skills in dog obedience such as sit stand back up and finish heeling etc. Rally Obedience can be enjoyed as a bridge between beginner obedience classes and competitive obedience classes or as a sport in itself. There are four titles that can be earned in American Kennel Club (AKC) Rally Nancy Hansen Sarasota Obedience Training Club member with her dog Zeke The RAE title which is the ultimate rally title consists of 10 advanced B and 10 excellent B qualifying runs (an open and an excellent qualifying score at the same trial). In Rally the handler is able to--and encouraged to--communicate with his or her dog throughout the rally course. What the judge wants to see is teamwork between dog and handler. and execute the instructions on each sign independently until the finish line which is at the end of the course. Completion of the course is timed but the finish time only is used if there is a tie in a score that is for title placement. The exercises in the Rally Obedience course either can be stationary exercises or moving exercises. Examples of station30 Obedience--Rally Novice (RN) Rally Advanced (RA) Rally Excellent (RE) and Rally Advanced Excellent title (RAE). Rally Novice is executed with the dog on lead while RA RE and RAE are all completed off leash. Each title which is increasingly more challenging requires three legs or qualifying scores to earn a RN RA and RE title. Botha October November 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet A qualifying score is 70 points or more out of a 100 possible points. Rally is a fun exciting new approach to obedience. What makes Rally so enjoyable is the variety of ways the course can be set chances are you will never run the same course twice With more than 50 Rally signs used in competition there is an endless number of ways to assemble a rally course. Whether training your dog in basic obedience Rally Obedience flyball freestyle or any other class the goal is to build and strengthen the bond between dog and handler. Dogs love to work with their handlers and it is amazing to see the skills that dogs willingly learn and can develop. Rally Obedience is a great way to start working with your dog. Whether you want to go into competitive dog sports or just want to have some fun with your dog consider signing up for a class in Rally Obedience. Rally is offered by many different registries including AKC United Kennel Club and Australian Shepherd Club of America to name just a few. In addition to Rally Obedience classes SOTC also offers classes in puppy socialization beginner obedience competitive obedience agility flyball tricks and freestyle. Check out the Web site www.sotcdogtraining.com for a complete schedule of classes and for more information about our club. Botha From Lonely Stray to Caped Crusader was one of millions of cats that was no longer wanted when he first was discovered in a gutter on the side of a busy street two and a half years ago. His back end was completely collapsed and he couldn t walk he merely dragged his hind legs much like a seal does. Estimated to be about 10 years old he had once been someone s pet because he already had been neutered. But now--like far too many others--he was discarded and alone. But luck was on the side of this frightened abandoned cat. Two loving strangers brought him to Cat Depot where the staff immediately rushed him to an emergency clinic because they feared that he had been hit by a car. Thankfully a series of X-rays revealed that there were no broken bones. But further tests revealed that he suffered from feline diabetic neuropathy a condition that caused his back legs to atrophy and also is known to be a common side effect of untreated diabetes. The rescued feline was given insulin in an attempt to control his diabetes but initially he did not respond. In fact he was taken back and forth to a local veterinary emergency hospital several times because he kept crashing and slipping into a diabetic coma. Yet he continued to cling to life holding on for someone--anyone--who would love him again. He was a valiant fighter to be sure--so much so that one of the staff members at Cat Depot placed a small ripped piece of material on his back--a makeshift cape--and because of his mighty spirit and enduring will to survive began to call him Mighty Lou. It was clear that the help of someone special--an angel who adored cats and had experience dealing with feline diabetes--was needed to give Mighty Lou the care and attention he required...and deserved. When first approached about fostering Mighty Lou watercolor artist and Cat Depot s close friend Nancy Colby initially said no. She already 36 He was caring for other diabetic cats of her own and felt she could not handle another. But when she reluctantly met Mighty Lou her heart melted she simply could not resist and brought him home...but only as a foster she insisted. Mighty Lou was now the seventh cat in the Colby household. In the embrace of Nancy s loving care miracles soon began to happen. Within about two weeks both his diet and diabetes were regulated and he is now off insulin altogether. With proper treatment cats can revert back to being nondiabetic Nancy says. Much to her dismay however Mighty Lou still could not walk and she soon discovered that he also was stone cold deaf. But that certainly did not deter Nancy. Every single day I would take him out on the driveway and encourage him to walk and I also would massage his back legs Nancy remembers. He really was in bad shape. When one of Nancy s friends a local veterinarian heard about Mighty Lou s condition she offered to try acupuncture she had never seen a case of feline diabetic neuropathy before. And with just a handful of treatments the once-crippled cat remarkably began to walk Nancy continues to walk up and down the driveway with Mighty Lou to help strengthen his legs. And this daily ritual has paid off Mighty Lou can now run and he even has jumped over a baby gate He still shuffles like a little old man but he isn t in any pain Nancy says. Mighty Lou has made a 1 000 percent turnaround because of diet exercise and stability at home. And although Nancy did not admit it undoubtedly it was her generous heart and gentle encouragement that healed both Mighty Lou s body and spirit. Needless to say Mighty Lou s days as a foster cat were numbered he earned his place as a permanent member of the Colby family when Nancy officially adopted him. Mighty Lou s story is one of courage determination and triumph. This once-discarded cat epitomizes Cat Depot s mission to save lives and clearly exemplifies how the love of a foster parent can make all the difference in the world. Although Mighty Lou is extremely attached to Nancy he was destined to be more than just one of her feline companions. In addition to becoming an accomplished blogger who shares his adventures on Cat Depot s Web site--blog.catdepot.org-- Mighty Lou is now the Caped Crusader for Cat Depot s newest program Friends Like Me which was established to provide emergency medical care and treatment for kittens and cats who are sick injured or suffering from chronic illnesses. With a wardrobe of colorful capes Mighty Lou is quickly becoming a local celebrity What s more he recently has been spotted in the company of other well-known luminaries. At Hyatt Regency Sarasota in mid-September for example he shared the stage with Jackson Galaxy the star of Animal Planet s popular show My Cat From Hell. Despite the fact that there was a bit of hissing involved Mighty Lou Nancy and Cat Depot s Executive Director Shelley Thayer proudly presented Jackson Galaxy with a matching cape of his own Photos by Connie Summers October November 2013 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Mighty Lou also was one of the chosen few who shared oneon-one time with the famed cat behaviorist when he spent several hours touring Cat Depot s facility on September 14. All of the proceeds from the sold-out presentation and book signing--which were followed by dinner attended by six lucky winners who bid on a chance to dine with Jackson Galaxy--benefitted Cat Depot s Friends Like Me program. When not chauffeuring Mighty Lou to his many appearances and outings Nancy still finds time to pursue her passion which is painting portraits of animals. Amazingly Nancy is a self-taught artist working in both watercolor and acrylic. Once immersed in the corporate world with a demanding 9-to-5 job Nancy experienced the proverbial burn out and began painting wall murals which soon led to portraits. Locally and regionally Nancy is best known for her cat portraits although she admits that she actually paints more canines than felines as well as a lot of birds. In watercolor cats are far more complicated to paint Nancy admits. However I have developed a technique that makes it difficult for others to achieve what I can do. I can paint anything but I choose to paint animals she continues. My heart is for animals and so my art helps animals. As the winner of Sarasota Pet s Choice Awards for Best Pet Portrait Artist in 2010 2012 and 2013 Nancy also has earned an infinite number of top honors from the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society North Port Area Art Center Venice Art Center Arts of Sarasota and Charlotte County Visual Arts Center. She currently showcases her work at the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society s four annual shows. Nancy is a member of Animal Artists of America and the So- ciety of Feline Artists in England. Her dream is to one day rent a cottage in England where she can paint cat portraits and then showcase her work in a London gallery. Eager to share her talent with others Nancy teaches watercolor classes on Tuesdays at the North Port Art Center and on Wednesdays at the Venice Art Center. She also teaches art to children with hearing disabilities and Mighty Lou frequently accompanies her to class to inspire the children. A collection of Nancy s paintings are available for sale in Cat Depot s Supply and Gift Store and a portion of the proceeds are donated to help the cats and kittens in Cat Depot s care. It is painting portraits of pets that Nancy enjoys most. She works from a photograph of the animal and creates a treasured remembrance for the owner. When I do a pet s portrait I want to create a painting that truly means something to the owner Nancy adds. One of the greatest payments in what I do is when I see tears well up in someone s eyes. When I can touch a person s heart...that is the moment I work for. Nancy has of course painted a portrait of Mighty Lou wearing one of his many capes. The portrait and Mighty Lou s story have been printed on gift cards that are now being mailed around the country to encourage terminally ill children. While Nancy will admit that Mighty Lou has a little ornery streak that he doesn t hesitate to reveal when he is picked up he still is her hero. And she of course is his. Undeniably it was a match made not in heaven but at Cat Depot. By Candace T. Botha one would ever imagine--even in their wildest dreams--that one feral cat could eventually impact the fate of thousands of felines in our community during the course of a decade. But it is because of one orange cat--trapped in a backyard in Sarasota--that one of the nation s largest no-kill feline-only nonprofit organizations and an eco-friendly rescue adoption education and resource center that now serves as a prototype for feline facilities around the globe was initially founded. It was September 2003 that life instantly changed for Sarasota residents Ken and Linda Slavin who spent three nights--due to two faulty traps--trying to catch that singular stray cat. In the best interest of Buddy their furry captive the Slavins brought the cat to a community shelter where they were shocked to discover 262 free-roaming cats living in deplorable conditions and in dire need of a safe haven. To make matters worse many of the cats there were ill suffering from a range of upper respiratory and digestive issues and infested with ear mites. For the Slavins the rescue of one feral cat suddenly became a crisis of monumental proportions. Five concerned citizens--including the Slavins--took immediate action and with the cooperative assistance of volunteers and other local animal organizations in the community all of the cats were moved into two vacant storefronts on North Washington Boulevard that were rented to provide temporary quarters for the cats until they could be rehabilitated then adopted. The new location was called Cat Depot. Although now a distant memory founding partners Bev Meadows Garo Partoyan and Ken and Linda Slavin look back on the massive undertaking of that initial rescue effort simply as a labor of love. No Our total mission was to rescue 262 cats that desperately needed help Bev Meadows says. It wasn t long however before Cat Depot s co-founders realized that their work had just begun. As we went through the process of rehabilitating the original 262 cats we began to realize that there was a more widespread need for a feline-only adoption facility in Sarasota comments co-founder Garo Partoyan. As the cats were restored to health and adopted out calls kept coming in and additional cats were brought to us. From the outset the staff volunteers and cats survived and thrived despite sharing the cramped 2 400 square-foot storefronts that housed numerous crates stacked one atop another. But it wasn t long before the proverbial wheels were in motion and a larger facility with free-roaming room for cats was first envisioned. I didn t sleep for years thinking about a time when the cats could finally move into a new shelter with free-roaming areas instead of crates Linda Slavin says. It was in fact six years on October 30 2009 when Cat Depot relocated to a brand new state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly facility located at 2542 17th Street in Sarasota. The 10 000 square-foot building was a collaborative effort with area architects and contractors who worked closely with the co-founders to design a facility that would be a sanctuary not only for the cats but also for the staff and volunteers that worked Continued on Page 40 there and the community residents that would visit. Free-roaming pods with plenty of room for humans and felines to visit and play. Expansive suites with outdoor CAT-ios for fresh air and sunlight. Custom-designed cat furniture and cozy sleep cubbies. A unique air-conditioning system that hinders the circulation of pet dander. Together the co-founders thought like a cat in the design of the new facility and their vision was carefully executed to create optimal living conditions for the felines in Cat Depot s care. But the ingenuity didn t end there. There now was room for all of the amenities that the staff only could dream of before--executive offices a surgical suite an expansive conference room isolation rooms intake rooms and examination rooms a kitchen and even a laundry room. A colorful supply and gift shop that also serves as a welcome check-in area for visitors inside the building s front entrance also was an important component in the new facility s blueprints. The retail space offers not only a wide selection of Cat Depot-themed merchandise but also an array of some of the most unique feline accessories found in the marketplace. Since the completion of the secondfloor Education & Activity Center in 2010 Cat Depot has made community education a key component of its mission to serve and assist feline owners caregivers and other organizations. With the move and the expansion coupled with the founders evolving vision Cat Depot was fated to become more than just a feline adoption center. We have been running a shelter for six years Ken Slavin said in 2009 now we are building an organization. Fast forward to 2013 and the celebration of Cat Depot s 10th anniversary. In the last four years since moving to the new facility the nonprofit organization deservedly has earned global attention and accolades as a rescue adoption education and resource center. While it is impossible to document the entire scope of Cat Depot s achievements during the past decade--and especially in the past several years--there are numerous noteworthy accomplishments that clearly demonstrate Cat Depot s ongoing commitment to saving lives. Here and on the pages that follow is a snapshot perspective of some of the most notable and memorable accomplishments in Cat Depot s recent history. Cat Depot assists Buddy s Feral Cat Program in Sarasota with monthly transportation while lending a helping hand with food traps and other resources to a variety of animal organizations in Sarasota Manatee and DeSoto counties. To safeguard the cats in the facility s care Cat Depot has completed Emergency Hurricane Plan Steps I and II that includes collecting and storing one week of supplies for 150 cats and 8 staff members. An ASPCA grant received last year enabled Cat Depot to purchase a 24-foot-emergency trailer that can transport up to 150 small animals to safety should evacuation of the facility during a hurricane or other weatherrelated incident become mandatory. As part of its ongoing mission to save lives Cat Depot has assembled its own Emergency Response Team. The skillfully trained team can be deployed to rescue animals locally or nationally during natural disasters or animal-related emergencies as in the 2012 rescue of 700 Caboodle Ranch cats in which Cat Depot was actively involved. Cat Depot proudly maintains partnerships with the ASPCA SPCA American Humane Maddie s Foundation and a variety of local humane organizations locally and throughout greater Florida to offer lifesaving emergency medical care for injured and ill cats. Cat Depot s new facility has served as a training center for the Florida State Animal Response Coalition a FEMA-approved not-for-profit organization that prepares volunteer responders to assist animals during disasters and emergencies. Many of Cat Depot s staff and volunteers have participated in the training and are ready to serve as responders when called. Adoption In 2012 Cat Depot took in and placed newborn kittens and cats up to 17 years of age with loving families. To provide seniors in our community with a cat s loving companionship Cat Depot works closely with The Pines and other assisted-living facilities in our area to pair residents with senior cats at discounted prices while also offering an array of free supplies. An integral part of Cat Depot s community effort is both onsite and off-site promotions to cultivate new adoptions and increase awareness of the need for forever homes for the cats and kittens that temporarily reside at Cat Depot. Using social media print television and radio as well as posting adoptable cats and kittens on more than 10 Internet adoption sites Cat Depot continually expands its presence in the local and regional community. Rescue In 2012 Cat Depot rescued more than 1 000 homeless felines and re-homed 896 of the kittens and cats that were brought in to the facility. This year s goal is to find homes for 1 000 cats and kittens. Specifically Cat Depot s foster parents saved the lives of nearly 400 kittens during Kitten Season in the spring of 2012. Education In 2012 more than 800 school children teenagers and adults participated in both on-site and off-site educational programs hosted by Cat Depot. Thirty-seven local groups and businesses attended workshops classes and seminars at Cat Depot last year. In recent years Cat Depot has introduced and conducted educational classes that cover an array of feline topics including rescue socialization training behavior modification bottle feeding proper trapping techniques and first aid and CPR. Cat Depot has established relationships with area clubs schools scout troops senior centers church groups and assisted-living facilities to promote proper feline care through education. In 2012 Cat Depot launched a summer camp program designed for elementary school children. Called Kid s Critter residents caring for cat colonies by providing traps transport and limited medical care. Last year Cat Depot responded to more than 25 000 phone calls and e-mails from individuals seeking assistance on an array of animal-related topics. Cat Depot is an active participant in the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations a professional nonprofit organization that includes advocates throughout the state who are working together to address and resolve important animal issues in Florida. What a difference a decade has made While it was clearly a strong vision and a steadfast commitment to saving cats and kittens that has been the impetus behind Cat Depot s growth and success according to Executive Director Shelley Thayer volunteers have been the pulse of the organization s achievements every step of the way. Camp the five-day interactive experience gave students in Grades 2 through 5 an opportunity to enjoy hands-on time with adoptable animals and participate in animal-themed arts and crafts while learning the importance of proper pet care via presentations by local pet professionals. This year four weeks of Critter Camp were offered the camp experience was expanded to include a five-day program for sixth and seventh graders as well as a free week of camp for Girls Inc. Sarasota attendees. Resource for the Community and Community at Large In 2012 Cat Depot was open to the public 358 days during the year. To assist Sarasota and Manatee County residents experiencing financial hardship as well as those who are caring for cat colonies in our communities Cat Depot launched a Food Bank in September 2011. Open on the third Saturday of every month the Food Bank has provided cat food for 230 family pets and more than 90 registered cat colony caregivers since its launch. This much-need assistance has translated into 15 000 pounds of dry food and more than 6 000 cans of wet food that has been donated. Cat Depot also works closely with community In 2012 alone more than 1 400 dedicated community residents donated 18 157 volunteer hours. We really cannot thank our volunteers enough Shelley comments. Without them this would not be possible. Co-founder Ken Slavin agrees. I always am excited to come into the shelter and see how passionate the volunteers are it really fills my heart he says. While adults and teenagers 16 years of age and older are invited to volunteer Ken extends a special welcome to senior citizens. We also need the energy and experience of retired people who may have time on their hands Ken says. This is a grass-roots effort to help animals in our community he continues and everyone is needed. Adds Shelley If anyone cares about the quality of life of animals there is not a better organization to support than Cat Depot. The event is co-presented by Bishop Animal Shelter and Animal Network Inc. a Manatee County-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that is committed Canine Christmas Festival 2013 to helping people help animals. Animal Network Inc. receives all of the proceeds from the festival and local animal groups in Manatee County benefit directly from the money raised at Canine Christmas. That s one of the reasons the event was created so many years ago--to support animal rescue. The money raised at the event also is used throughout the year to support Animal Network Inc. s Pet Emergency Fund which directly helps sick animals in the community. Since its launch in 1998 attendance has more than quadrupled with nearly 3 000 pet owners participating last year. Animal lovers look forward to--and plan for--the event all year long. Can you think of a better way to spend the day with your family and your pets asks Sue Kolze vice-president of Animal Network Inc. and co-organizer of the event. And with good reason There always is so much to see and do Enjoy pet and family portraits with Santa Claus and spectacular raffle prizes and silent auction gifts. Fifty-plus vendors selling holiday toys treats apparel and gifts for people and pets will fill the festival grounds. And most importantly there will be shelter and rescue animals available for adoption. While the focus of the festival is on providing a fun holiday venue for families giving local animal groups a time and place to showcase the dogs they have available for adoption is equally important. In fact there were about 40 adoptions at Canine Christmas in 2012 and the organizers hope to exceed that number this year. But that s not all There s also the everpopular Fashion Show and Costume Contest hosted again this year by Susan Marie of The Doggy Diva a weekly radio show that is broadcast Saturday morning at 11 00 a.m. on WTMY 1280 AM. Registration for the fashion show will be held from 11 30 a.m. until 1 00 p.m. the show will begin at 1 30 p.m. The cost to participate in the fashion show is only 5 per dog and trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories. While many of the traditional festival favorites will be back there s also an exciting addition to the annual line-up. We are having our own Canine Christ- mas Food Truck Rally Sue says. Suncoast Gourmet Food Trucks will provide a variety of beverages food and dessert delights this year. Manatee County Animal Services will be selling T-shirts priced at 15 each to help raise awareness of the no-kill movement in Manatee County. The shirts have been designed for both cat and dog lovers and they are very trendy and colorful Sue says. Generating awareness of the no-kill movement in our county has become an important focus of Canine Christmas. To that end all of the proceeds raised from the sale of the T-shirts will benefit the medical fund for the Animal Services shelter in Palmetto. If you are looking to adopt a new furry friend don t miss the popular parade of adoptable dogs which will be held at 12 30 p.m. All festival attendees also have an opportunity to win prizes at three raffles that will held throughout the day and to also win a big stash of cash by supporting the 50 50 drawing that will be drawn at 2 45 p.m. Last year s total pot was 5 100 Tickets for the 50 50 are priced at 5 each or 6 tickets for 25 and the winner does not need to be present to win. At noon the organizers are asking all attendees with dogs to participate in the Canine Christmas Sit-Stay Challenge to set the Guinness World Record for the largest number of dogs in one location who sit and stay in one spot long enough to take a photograph. We hope the third try is the charm and we can set a new record Sue says. We need 101 dogs to participate so we encourage all dog owners to help us make history Admission to Canine Christmas is priced at 3 per vehicle. Dogs of course are welcome to attend the festival but must be social restrained on a six-foot leash and wearing their inoculation tags. The entrance to the festival grounds is located at 5781 21st Avenue West. Handicapped parking is available and the property is wheelchair accessible.
