F O he beginning of a new year always holds such promise but with the advent of 2014 I am heartbroken once again by the passing of a woman in my life who meant the world to me--my mother Carol M. Botha. Diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer on December 12 my mom accepted her fate with courage and a fierce determination not to linger she was ready to continue her journey and reclaim her place at the side of my father who passed away last January. A very short 24 days after her diagnosis her prayer was answered and she died at home peacefully with her daughters and granddaughters at her side. Not a day goes by--or will ever go by--that my mom isn t close in thought or even closer in heart. She was a woman to be admired for her ceaseless willingness to give to listen to love. She was the heart of our family the spirit of every gathering and celebration and the one person in my life who always looked after me. And while she was a talented watercolorist a vocal political advocate an avid reader and a passionate sports enthusiast the roles she cherished most were wife mother and grandmother. And in these roles she brought much joy to our lives. I will miss her wisdom her faith and her strength. But most of all I will miss her laughter and her love. Carol M. Botha and I am so very touched by--and grateful for--the beautiful cards messages and flowers received from the Candace T. Botha publisher many friends I have made through Sarasota Pet and I would like to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who attended my mother s memorial service at the Sarasota National Cemetery in late January your presence that day meant the world to me my daughters and my sister. Now back to business While this issue is filled with interesting articles and profiles I implore each of you to turn to page 34 of this issue of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet There is a catastrophic crisis in our local animal community and your help is needed As most of you are aware there was a headline-making raid in Manatee County in early February. More than 300 dogs cats and horses were rescued from unlivable conditions and placed in the loving care of local animal shelters who literally have spent thousands of dollars of their own money to provide these animals with the care needed to survive. Sadly funds and supplies have been exhausted in this ongoing effort to save lives. Now more than ever we must support the groups that willingly stepped in when innocent lives were in jeopardy. The aftermath of the raid--which has been deemed one of the largest in Manatee County s history--continues to have deadly consequences. Because most of our local animal shelters are now filled to capacity there is little or no room to take in abandoned owner-surrendered or stray animals--many that are highly adoptable. Although lives have been saved others now are being lost and that perhaps is the greatest tragedy of all. On page 34 you will find the names contact information and Web sites of eight animal groups and businesses in Sarasota and Manatee counties that rescued the dogs cats and horses along with supply lists that these groups need to continue rehabilitating these animals. Please review the lists and contribute generously or visit the Web sites of the animal groups to make monetary donations...every dollar counts Supplies and donations can be dropped off at the addresses provided. In addition ACE Pet Resort K9 Korral Sniglet s Dog Bakery and Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory in Sarasota and Perks 4 Pets in Bradenton have generously agreed to serve as drop-off points for your donations. We all can make a difference if we work together as a community. This is YOUR chance to support the efforts of our local animal groups simply by lending a helping hand that is desperately needed. Florida Hazards 5 By Kristen Levine DVM CriticalVetCare Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center F lorida--an outdoor paradise There is so much to do and to see wherever you go you are surrounded with beaches attractions and parks. Spending time outdoors with your dog is fun and healthy however this picturesque exotic climate presents some risks of which you should be aware. Whether you are enjoying a day on the water a wildlife walk or a simple stroll through your neighborhood consider these five potential dangers your dog could develop or encounter. Some insects such as brown recluse and black widow spiders are more dangerous or even life threatening and typically cause more severe reactions in most pets. The venom from a brown recluse spider bite causes tissue destruction and necrosis. The black widow envenomation can cause changes to sensation locally muscle twitching anxiety respiratory distress seizures and paralysis. In either case your dog should be brought to a veterinarian right away for supportive care and treatments. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can greatly accelerate wound healing. Snakebites Dr. Kristen Levine CriticalVetCare Heartworm Disease One of most common hazards of a Florida environment is Heartworm disease a severe and even life-threatening infection. It is caused by a parasitic worm (Dirofilaria immitis) spread through a mosquito bite. The dog becomes the definite host. The larvae travel around the dog s body and mature over several months to adult reproductive worms which live in the heart lungs and blood vessels. These parasites cause very severe disease in a dog s heart lungs and vessels and indirectly affects other organs in the body through the inflammatory response. The typical early signs of heartworm infestation are tiring easily exercise intolerance and a soft deep cough. As the disease progresses these symptoms become more severe and the dog loses weight breathes more rapidly and after exercise may cough to the point of fainting. Unlike in northern states Florida dogs should be on a monthly preventative year round to prevent the infection. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the snakes in your area. There are 50 species of snakes in Florida 6 are venomous the Pygmy Rattlesnake the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake the Timber Rattlesnake the Cottonmouth the Copperhead and the Coral Snake. Most of the snakes that you will come across are not poisonous. However it is better to be safe and avoid all encounters. Snakes will not bite unless provoked but dogs are curious and can easily find themselves face to face with dangerous reptiles. Snake bites can cause severe swelling pain decreased clotting ability or uncontrolled bleeding breathing difficulty etc. Bites by venomous snakes are very dangerous and even can be immediately life threatening. It is critical to get your dog to the closest veterinarian immediately. Remove your pet from the environment where the overheating occurred and take him or her immediately to the closest veterinary clinic. Sago Palm (Miniature Palm Trees) We teach our children not to eat any plants or fruits with which they are not familiar in fear of poisoning. There are many possible toxic plants in Florida. One in particular we should watch for is the Sago Palm. It is a miniature palm tree look-alike most commonly used in landscaping and even sold as houseplants. Sago Palms are highly toxic and cause liver failure and death. Every part of the plant is toxic. Even one seed can be fatal if ingested by a dog. Sadly most pet owners are unaware of the danger inherent in having these trees in the house or yard. Whether you live or vacation in Florida make sure you are aware of the hazards discussed here so you and your pets can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery and weather. Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC is excited to announce that we have changed our business name to CriticalVetCare Open 24 7 for your pet s needs the clinic is located across from The Landings south of Proctor Road at 4837 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. For more information please call 941-929-1818 or visit www.criticalvetcare.com. Background photo Even one seed of the Sago Palm can be toxic if ingested by a dog. Photo BigStockPhoto.com Rawlik March April 2014 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Heatstroke Insect Arachnid Bites Let s face it Florida is an insectville -- we are surrounded by thousands of insects everywhere we go. Any insect bite or sting can cause a reaction in your pet. Most bites are harmless and cause swelling redness and itching. If your pet is having a more severe reaction however such as facial swelling breathing difficulty or collapse he or she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. 6 Heatstroke (also called hyperthermia or heat prostration) is an increased body temperature caused by environmental conditions. It is most common in the summer months when heat and humidity rise. Some common causes of heatstroke in animals include leaving a pet in a parked car exercising in hot and or humid conditions and being left outside without adequate shade and water. Typical symptoms include distress or anxiety bright red or purple color of your pet s tongue or gums excessive salivation heavy panting weakness or collapse. Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate care. By David T. Smith DVM Sarasota Veterinary Center locked cat is the term used when a cat s urethra becomes obstructed or blocked and he or she cannot urinate. This condition also is known as Feline Urinary Syndrome (FUS) and Feline Urethral Obstruction (FUO). It is most common in male cats but occasionally occurs in female cats as well. It is a painful condition that is a true emergency as the cat can become toxic and die within a couple of days. B Telltale Signs & Symptoms The symptoms are initially similar to a bladder infection because the cat will spend a lot of time in the litter box trying to urinate but only will produce a few drops of urine or nothing at all. As the bladder grows larger and the toxins build up in the body the cat will become depressed and possibly cry or moan frequently. As the level of toxins elevates vomiting can occur and the cat can become comatose. Often the cat s urethra is blocked with a sandy gritty material made up of mineral crystals such as magnesium calcium phosphorous oxalate and others. Sometimes a small amount of the crystals causes enough inflammation for the tissue to swell closed all by itself. and diet play a role in the cause of FUS. My experience in more than 25 years of practicing veterinary medicine is that there is a percentage of cats that are prone to FUS. Diet plays a huge role in preventing the disease in all cats and especially in those cats that seem predisposed to developing FUS. Throughout my career each time a cat with symptoms of FUS has been brought into my practice for an examination and treatment I have asked the owner what diet the cat has been eating. There are several diets on the lower end of the quality scale that are named a large percentage of the time. However there also are a few cats that are eating well-regarded premium diets that present occasionally as well. I am confident that these are cats that are especially prone to developing FUS. Dr. David T. Smith Sarasota Veterinary Center. Photo by Keith Millard If your cat has experienced FUS be sure to follow your veterinarian s dietary recommendation for the rest of the cat s life. Why Veterinary Care is Imperative The Key to Prevention Getting to the Root of the Problem Research has shown that both bacteria We can prevent FUS by feeding special diets formulated specifically to minimize the formation of mineral crystals. I never have had a recurrence of FUS in a cat whose owner was strict about feeding only the correct diet after the original diagnosis. On the other hand I have seen the cats who are predisposed to FUS have recurrences after only a few days of eating the wrong food. Cat food manufacturers advertise special urinary diets that are commercially available in grocery stores and pet stores but these foods do not prevent the recurrence in cats who are predisposed to FUS. A cat with FUS generally has to be placed under anesthesia so that the veterinarian can perform a procedure that will unblock the cat. Following the procedure the cat will need to spend several days in a hospital with catheters attached. In some cases cats with FUS will require surgery. All that expense and discomfort usually can be avoided by feeding your feline a high-quality diet. I recommend that you consult with your veterinarian before choosing a diet for your cat. If a commercial or advertisements for a particular diet catch your eye talk to your veterinarian before purchasing anything new or before changing your cat s diet. Dr. David T. Smith has been a veterinarian in Florida for 26 years. His practice is the Sarasota Veterinary Center on Cattlemen Road south of Bee Ridge Road and next to Burlington Coat Factory. Symptoms include local site reaction swollen regional lymph nodes and general malaise. Animal Bites--Puncture wounds can result in serious bacterial infections passed from our pets mouths. These infections can include pasteurella streptococcus and staphylococcus. Rabies--This fatal viral disease is spread in the saliva of an infected animal and travels through the nerves eventually resulting in encephalitis. Suburban wildlife and bats are more common transmitters. However any unfamiliar animal acting aggressively or unusually should be avoided. Tick Born or Transmitted Diseases Lyme disease--The bacteria causing Lyme disease is not yet prevalent in our immediate area. Ringworm Actually ringworm is a fungal infection not a worm. Children and certain individuals may contact this mycotic disease from their pets hair. Lesions of the skin are usually itchy scaly and crusty. 10 Tips to Protect Ourselves and Our Pets The following simple yet highly effective practices may help you and your pets avoid risk of exposure to a zoonotic disease 10 March April 2014 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Wash hands thoroughly after handling all pets (especially reptiles). Use gloves or another impervious material to pick up your pet s stool. Keep outdoor sandboxes securely covered when not in use. Avoid kissing pets or allowing them to lick your face. If pregnant or immune compromised have another family member clean the cat s litter box. Wash hands after gardening or participating in any outdoor activities in which you have contact with soil. Check pets for ticks and fleas daily and each time after spending time outdoors. Wash any scratches or wounds immediately with soap and water. Consult your physician if you have any puncture wounds. Keep your pets up to date on all vaccines especially the rabies vaccine to avoid exposure to zoonotic diseases. Avoid exercising your pets in areas where there is stagnant water or where wildlife is known to congregate. Keep garbage and other food sources secure and unavailable to wildlife predators. Loss of appetite can make recovery from an illness longer and more difficult since adequate calories and nutrients are required in order for the body s immune system and healing mechanisms to function at their best. In cats inappropriate or inadequate nutrition can also lead to a condition called hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver. Hepatic lipidosis (HL) occurs when the body does not receive the food intake that it needs and in response mobilizes stored fat to meet its caloric needs. The demands of processing this fat quickly can result in a huge workload on the liver and much of the fat can end up deposited there. to larger fat stores in the body. Longer time periods of anorexia will increase the risk of HL but it also can happen quickly. In some cats particularly those that are overweight it can develop in just two to three days. Without treatment HL can be fatal. With appropriate treatment most cases of HL can be resolved. However it is important to also consider the underlying condition or the illness that stopped the cat from eating in the first place. There are many possible illnesses that can make a cat have a decreased appetite and therefore the prognosis is variable depending on the type of illness that is present. A physical exam blood test imaging (radiographs or an ultrasound) and in some cases a biopsy can help to confirm the HL and determine the root cause of the anorexia that led to HL. Dr. Tamara Powell VCA Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital Who is at Risk Signs & Symptoms HL is mainly a disease of cats it is rare in dogs. Among cats the risk is significantly higher in overweight felines due No matter what the underlying cause HL itself can make a cat very ill. Affected felines are typically jaundiced developing a yellow color to their skin and gums as well as the whites of their eyes. They often have significant weight loss and are reluctant to eat anything. Some cats may experience vomiting diarrhea constipation lethargy or severe weakness. Cats with HL also can experience very serious complications such as anemia bleeding disorders and severe electrolyte imbalances. Cautionary Treatment Some consequences can occur secondarily to re-feeding syndrome a condition in which sudden re-feeding can cause rapid dangerous changes in the body s fluid and electrolyte equilibrium. At left Hepatic Lipidosis (HL) is a serious and sometimes fatal disease more frequently seen in cats. The risk is significantly higher in overweight cats. With proper veterinary care most cases can be resolved with closely monitored nutritional support. Photo 123rf. com Anna Yakimova Therefore it is very important to follow a recommended veterinary protocol for re-introducing food. Your veterinarian can also recommend certain critical care diets which may be helpful. Beginning adequate nutritional intake is a cornerstone of HL therapy. However it is important to note that this treatment can be very prolonged. Unfortunately many cats won t eat on their own. Consequently force feeding is often needed. In some cases a feeding tube can be placed to assist with this especially since some cats can need nutritional support for weeks to months. While this sounds invasive most cats accept a feeding tube very well--it does not interfere with their normal activities and they can still eat by mouth on their own if they choose to do so during that time. Some cats can go home for this feeding therapy but some severely affected cats may need to be hospitalized for urgent care and monitoring. In both cases follow-up visits are important to monitor progress until a full recovery is made. Sherrell DVM Laurel Oak Veterinary Hospital Dachshund Precious naps on the pillow under my desk. She awakens and I hear two quick barks-- Yip Yip I stop what I am doing and carry Precious outside to do her business. I know that this particular yelp is a call for help getting outside so she can take a potty break. She snoops around the yard for a few minutes and is startled by a bee buzzing around her. Precious can walk but her gait is still unsteady from the last bout of vestibular disease that was just one of many diseases with which she has been afflicted during the past few months. She has trouble maintaining her balance and will even roll over while attempting to urinate outside. She walks with the help of a harness as I guide her through my back yard. I lead her past the bushes and around the ant hills that are home to the red ants that attacked her a few weeks ago when she walked into the ant hill on a late-night potty break. I have to help Precious walk at night because she has lost a great deal of her eyesight due to glaucoma. Her beautiful brown eyes are now a blue-and-white haze and I can no longer see her pupils. Nevertheless I love her just as much or even more than I did when I first adopted her 12 years ago from the humane society in Naples Florida where I served as medical director. I was taken by her sweet feisty nature then and I still love the way she wakes up every day as happy as she was the day before. The Aging Pet As Pets Age Everybody knows that dogs and cats age much more rapidly than humans do. Who hasn t heard the old adage that one year in a dogs life is equal to seven years of a human s life While it is true that Precious is 13 years old chronologically her true age is not the same as a 91-year-old person (Precious age x 7). Research has shown that the way dogs and cats age is not as cut and dry as the 7 years to every 1 human year rule--many factors affect the way our pets age. A dog s breed and size for example are the main factors that determine whether a dog will become a senior citizen at five years or at eight years of age. Giant and large breeds tend to age at a faster rate than smaller dogs the Great Dane for instance becomes a senior citizen at five years of age while a Maltese is able to join Canine AARP at eight years of age. Whether your dog enters his senior years at five or eight years of age the health issues he encounters are basically the same. As an example the taste buds may not be as sensitive and the older dog might decide that he does not have as much interest in food as he did a few years ago. Canned food may become the meal du jour and he may turn his nose up at the kibble he once loved. Your older buddy may still enjoy the daily after-dinner walks but he may be stiff and slow to move when he rises in the morning. He may not be able to hear your commands anymore and it might seem as though he has selective hearing. In fact you might notice that your pet does respond but only when he is standing right in front of you and he is able to see your face. In fact hearing loss occurs in about 20 percent of dogs as they age. This health condition is more difficult to quantify in cats most likely because cats tend to really have selective hearing at every stage of their life Charlotte B. Sherrell DVM Laurel Oak Veterinary Hospital Photo by Cindy Reno Visit your veterinarian frequently for physical exams and checkups to better understand what your senior pet is experiencing. Your vet may recommend blood tests and or radiographs to clarify what is needed to make your pet as comfortable as possible as he gets older. Is your pet moving more slowly as he ages Anti-inflammatory medications and high-quality nutraceuticals can work wonders for pets with arthritis a condition affecting the joints of older cats and dogs. These medications can help to reduce the pain and stiffness your pet may be experiencing. Arthritis can in fact be the reason why geriatric cats often miss the litter box and have potty accidents it also can be why older dogs do not want to walk an extra lap around the block. As humans age we too begin to slow down and move with more difficulty. It is critical to be mindful of your pet s changing needs as he enters his senior years animals deserve the same respect that we are entitled to as we grow older. In the next article in my series on the aging pet I will discuss ways to make your pet s golden years more enjoyable. Charlotte B. They include age breed bone structure gender and lifestyle. However the average healthy adult cat should weigh between 7 and 11 pounds. Females however may tend to weigh less than males. In the United States our pets are inclined to mirror our human tendency to have trouble with weight control. We have become so accustomed to seeing overweight people and animals that we fail to recognize healthy normal weight. We even go so far as to think a healthy cat that is an ideal weight is underweight By Shelley Thayer Executive Director Cat Depot C hances are greater than 50 percent that your cat is either overweight or obese. What Can I Do To Control My Cat s Weight Here are five easy steps you can take to help your cat lose weight. Change your Behavior--Many animal lovers believe that food intake has nothing to do with their cats weight. Of course it does Free feeding grain-based dry foods and endless treats can be culprits. It takes patience and commitment to help your cat achieve a healthy weight. And remember kindness is not food it s time spent with your cat. Exercise and Play--In nature food acquisition demands physical exertion. For most indoor cats food acquisition means getting out of bed and meandering to the food bowl. Cats need and thrive on using their hunting skills and that involves play. Feather wands laser lights catnip mice or whatever motivates your cat should be introduced. Like people cats can forget how to play. The good news is with the right toy they will remember Proper Diet--Cats are obligate carnivores and very different from dogs and people in their nutritional needs. They depend on the nutrients in meat to sustain life. Cats also require more than a dozen nutrients. For optimum health provide a high-quality meat-based dry cat food and at least one serving of wet food each day. Clean water also is essential and your cat should have more than one resource. Supplements should not be added without your veterinarian s approval. Free feeding dry food and daily treats does not equate to love and kindness no matter what your cat tells you Weight Loss--To keep your cat healthy he needs to shed weight gradually and safely. That equates to no more than 0.5 to 2 percent of his total weight per week. For example a 20 pound cat should not lose more than 1 pound per month. Losing weight too quickly can create serious liver problems especially for an obese cat. Commitment--If your cat is overweight or obese make the commitment to change your habits. Discuss a monitored and safe weight reduction program with your veterinarian before you start. Just as often the dog broke out and ran in a back field with horses. Recognizing that they did not have time to devote to Blyss these folks decided to re-home the free-range dog and gave her to an agility enthusiast who brought her to a charity agility event. Also attending the event was Dalyce Brell of Palm Bay Florida who saw the blue merle Border Collie and took her in. Within weeks Dalyce B quickly as possible. She earned her Master Agility Championship (MACH) in December 2012 at a trial hosted by Tailwaggers Agility Club of South Florida. The night before Blyss championship run Dalyce who lives at the end of a two-mile-long dead end road heard a knock at her Hera Kai and COZ door. She answered to find a group OceanWolf Agility of foreigners who had tracked her down through her affiliation as club secretary for the Palm Bay Agility Club. noticed that Blyss had severe separation anxiety and an extreme fear of men and horses. One evening at bedtime Blyss would not go into her crate. Dalyce thought something was amiss and a trip to the clinic turned into emergency surgery at 3 00 am to repair a hernia. Blyss stomach had moved into her chest cavity and was suffocating her. The surgeon believed that the condition was the result of some kind of trauma such as being kicked by a horse. Before adopting Blyss Dalyce took in another Border Collie named Kayla who she enrolled in obedience training to stop her from jumping up on people. The obedience instructor suggested they might enjoy agility and they started training. However Kayla had an extremely high drive and Dalyce felt clumsy handling her so they stopped competing in agility. Dalyce first took Blyss to Free Style often called dancing with your dog and they forged a close bond. They also learned clicker training which Dalyce uses to teach Blyss tricks like balancing toys or food on her head. Dalyce calls these tricks torturing the puppy. Next the pair tried agility and Dalyce discovered they are well matched. Blyss went through the Novice and Open levels as 20 They turned out to be agility enthusiasts from Israel who were visiting the area. The next day they came to see Blyss earn her championship title and were the first to sign her commemorative jump bar. Blyss earned a second MACH in July 2013. Dalyce and Blyss competed at the 2013 American Kennel Club National Tournament in Tulsa Oklahoma and have qualified and plan to attend the 2014 event in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. They also are regulars at agility trials held throughout South Florida. Dalyce gave Blyss a second chance but Blyss gave Dalyce one too. Lucky for Dalyce she found her Blyss. Water quality is the number one priority in a pond with Koi. In an established pond the ammonia & nitrite levels should always be at zero. Higher levels can kill your fish. The pH level of your pond also is important if it drops too low it also can kill your fish. Quick dip test strips are easy to use but liquid test strips are more accurate. A salinity meter also is available for testing salt levels. Question I recently installed a 1 000 gallon Koi pond. How many fish can I keep in my pond and how often and how much should I feed my Koi and goldfish --Denise Lisa Burns co-owner of Backyard Getaway in Myakka City will have to go through the new pond ammonia nitrite cycle that can take six to eight weeks. The pond will become cloudy and could turn green quickly especially during the warm weather season. If you want to avoid adding a pump and you do not have Koi in the pond my recommendation would be to have patience and try these tips Perform a small water change every couple of weeks no more than 25 percent of the pond volume. Do not feed the goldfish or guppies let them eat the muck. Try to remove as many of the fallen leaves as possible they do contribute to poor water quality. Keep plants in the pond at least 50 percent surface coverage they are a natural filter and will eat up the nutrients essentially starving out the algae. Start adding beneficial bacteria as soon as possible. You also could add a shallow layer of rock to the bottom of the pond to provide a surface for beneficial bacteria to grow. Lisa is the co-owner of Backyard Getaway a family owned and operated pond service and retail pond and water garden supply business offering professional and personalized water garden and pond design installation and pond maintenance services. Background image BigStockPhoto.com Noam Armonn March April 2014 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet Answer The general rule ofof thumb is one inch fish for every 10 gallons of water assuming you have a properly sized filtration system on your pond. If you have a 1 000 gallon pond you would only be able to have 100 total inches of fish. In other words you would not want more than 10 Koi each measuring 10 inches in length. Of course you should take into consideration that the Koi will grow. I would recommend starting with five Koi at five to seven inches giving them room to grow. You should only feed your Koi what they can consume in three minutes once a day at most. Feeding only three or four times a week is even better. Your Koi are bottom feeders by nature and will scavenge for food at the bottom and will eat the algae. If there is any food left floating or in the skimmer after three minutes be sure to remove it. The number of times per week is determined by the number of fish in your pond and the size of your filtration. The more you feed the more waste byproducts in the pond. You also may want to try feeding treats such as watermelon zucchini or frozen peas. Another tip Don t feed your fish once the temperature of the water falls below 55 degrees or rises above 85 degrees. Question One of my metal ponds just won t clear up after I emptied it scrubbed it clean and refilled it with well water. I tried the clay and I added quite a few oxygen plants but it still looks cloudy after three weeks. I don t use a pump and in the past the water always has remained clean except for a few algae blooms that I cleared up. I think it is because this year more leaves from the big trees are blowing into the pond and I don t have the time to skim as often. What do you think about a solar pump that makes the little fountain bubble the water There are only a couple of gold fish and guppies in the pond to eat the mosquitoes. --Eileen is an imAnswer Aerationcomponent portant in keeping good water quality in a pond especially if you have Koi or other aquatic life. The pump will keep the water from becoming stagnant and even though you have goldfish eating the mosquito larvae the pump also will prevent the pond from being a breeding ground for mosquitoes. That being said a pump alone will do very little to clear up the water. A pump with a filter would be beneficial but as you know from experience it is possible to have a clear water garden without aeration. There are many steps that work together to keep a pond or water garden clean. Periodic cleaning of your pond is a good thing but we recommend not draining the pond completely. When you empty the pond and scrub it out you are essentially starting over from scratch killing all the good bacteria in the process. I love reminiscing as I look through old photo albums especially the ones that hold the photographs of the pets that I have been privileged to have as a part of my family. Through the years I have been the proud owner of many animals namely cats but there also has been a dog and a few goldfish along the way too. One particular photo held my undivided attention. It was a picture of a cat we owned named Fluffy a large mediumhaired gray-striped male who had shown up at our doorstep one day. Although we fed him consistently had him vaccinated and offered him a place inside our home he was content to only be an outdoor cat. I would soon realize why because much to our despair he would disappear for one to two days at a time and then promptly reappear when he was hungry. It didn t matter I loved him anyway and even though he wasn t in our presence every day I still considered him to be my cat. I recall a time when a woman who lived on another street nearby called me to tell me that she had found Fluffy s rabies tag and collar. She had received my contact information by calling the veterinary clinic named on the tag. I was so happy to have found his tag but not thrilled when the woman informed me that Fluffy actually belonged to a couple of families on her street. How could this be We went to great lengths to keep the cat at our home and he has other families besides ours I thought What a little traitor At this point you might be wondering why I have decided to share this story with you. A while back while attending a Bentley s House Pet Loss Support meeting there was an attendee that was very sad and having trouble overcoming the grief and anguish she felt about a cat like our Fluffy who had come into her life by almost the exact circumstances and then without warning left her and never returned. She was devastated. As it turned out several months prior to this heartbreaking event she had endured the loss of her beloved pet. Still grieving she had taken a chance and opened up her heart to another animal. The cat like Fluffy was content to be an outdoor cat. One day unfortunately the cat disappeared and never came back home. All kinds of horrific scenarios played out in her mind and her anguish and guilt continued to swirl in a vicious circle. As the attendees at the meeting listened to this woman s story it was suggested to her by another that the cat may have had more than one family to whom it belonged. The room became very quiet it made a lot of sense. Cats are so independent. Perhaps this cat like our Fluffy was dividing her attention among more than one family One of the greatest benefits of attending a pet loss support group meeting is that attendees who are grieving--or about to endure the loss of a beloved pet--can be surrounded by those who understand and will offer a safe nonjudgemental Barbara Bounds Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory atmosphere in which to share grief. In this case in which the attendee was distraught over the disappearance of her cat another attendee was able to offer much-needed answers gained from her own experience. This understanding created peace and comfort surrounding a heartbreaking event that in all likelihood would have caused pain and guilt to linger for years. It s a funny thing how pets come in and out of our lives. Some are with us many years while others for only a brief time. Each relationship somehow prepares us for the next and with each new bond we establish we realize our capacity to love again after the loss of our own pet. This is exactly what the grief support attendee had to realize. Fluffy has been gone a number of years and even though our time together was brief I will never forget him. I learned this as I was reminiscing about the past with an old photo album. Always remember that time helps you choose the memories you want to hold onto. For 25 years Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory has been serving the veterinary and animal community on Florida s Gulf Coast by providing dignified after-care services that include pet cremations grief resources and personalized pet products. Buckle slip and martingale collars are permitted choke pinch electronic collars or head halters are prohibited. Harnesses however are allowed excluding any harness that restricts the dog s movement so that he cannot jump or pull. Owners also are encouraged to bring their own combs or brushes for their dogs to class for use during the CGC test. H ave you ever wondered why some dogs are such a delight to have around and others while adorable are not The answer could be that those delightful dogs and their owners have been through the American Kennel Club s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. The CGC program was launched in 1989 to reward dogs who have good manners at home and while out in the community. This course lays the foundation for other dog activities and skills such as obedience agility tracking and performance. As a nationally recognized program CGC is aimed at educating people to become responsible dog owners with well mannered and obedient dogs. Some therapy dog groups require passing the CGC test as a prerequisite. It also is recommended by some insurance companies. Training enhances the bond between the dog and the owner. Dogs with a solid obedience education respond well to everyday routines and have good manners with people and other dogs. Sarasota Obedience Training Club (SOTC) offers the CGC class as a six-week course practicing all components of the test during each session. Testing by an AKC-approved evaluator is held on the final night of class. There is no special equipment required for the CGC test. Developing CGC Skills The skills needed for the CGC test include accepting a friendly stranger and allowing that person to pet the dog. Think about how many times you have greeted a dog who has shown poor manners by jumping up on you. In class dogs are taught to allow people to pet them while sitting obediently next to their owners. During the test the evaluator also will handle your dog s ears and feet and will run your brush across the dog s back. Your dog s veterinarian veterinary technician and groomer will certainly appreciate this important skill Taking our dogs for daily walks or outings should be an enjoyable and pleasant experience for both dogs and owners. In the CGC course dogs and handlers will take a short walking course executing a right turn left turn about turn and a sit while on a loose leash. The dog and handler will also loose leash walk around a small crowd consisting of a minimum of three people to demonstrate that the dog can be polite and under control in public places. During the test dogs also will be presented with two distractions chosen by the evaluator. These distractions may include a dropped chair or clipboard or a person walking with a cane a stroller or a crate dolly. The dog must continue past the distraction with confidence showing no fear or aggression. While on your daily walk you and your dog more than likely will encounter another dog. Successful completion of the CGC test will demonstrate that your dog can be polite around other dogs. Two handlers and dogs will Pictured above Denise Donahue SOTC obedience instructor with her dogs Farley a Shih Tzu and Toby a Labrador Retriever. Photo by Monica Hendrickson Boyd approach each other from approximately twenty feet stop shake hands and continue on. The dogs must sit or stand quietly without moving toward the other dog. Handlers must also have the ability to put the dog in a sit and a down. The dog will also come when called. The final skill in the CGC test is a supervised separation. This demonstrates that the dog can be left with a friendly person if necessary and still have good manners. The owner will leave the dog with the evaluator and move out of sight for three minutes. During this period of separation the dog must show no excessive barking whining or pulling. After passing the CGC test the evaluator will give students paperwork to send to AKC to request their certificates. But most of the high-end diets have better digestibility than the over-thecounter diets some as high as 20 percent. So subtract that 20 percent from the cost and they become more competitive. Dr Reinhart my Collie loves chocolate and actually pushes my child down so she can steal it. I heard that chocolate can be poisonous if eaten by animals. Is my dog going to hurt herself eating this --Nancy Well Nancy it is easy for our pets to get into all kinds of trouble when eating people foods. Chocolate coffee and caffeine all contain methylxanthines from the cacao seeds. Ingestion of these compounds causes vomiting diarrhea panting thirst urination tremors seizures and sometimes death. Other foods that can be harmful to pets include Macadamia nuts which cause weakness depression vomiting tremors and hyperthermia. Grapes and raisins which can produce kidney failure leading to death. Xylitol used as a weight-loss sugar Dr. Michael Reinhart Jacaranda Animal Hospital Q A Dr. Reinhart my veterinarian put my 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel on a special food. It is way more expensive than the store brand and I don t think she needs to be on it. Is there a real reason why we should use those special diets --Roy The answer is yes Roy. Since your pet is not one of my patients and I don t know which food your veterinarian has recommended it is difficult to comment on your situation. However given the age of your pet it is likely that she was put on a senior diet and that is quite beneficial because a good senior diet takes the stress off the kidneys which is a real concern with aging pets. The other medical diets that are available also are by far a value in treating any disease that an individual pet may have. For example two diets c d or urinary S O are commonly used for problems in the urine--particularly crystal formation-- that can lead to stones in the kidney or bladder. I have dissolved stones in the bladder without surgery with one of these diets so I would say it is important. Also when your pet is in kidney failure there is no better tool for you to use than the diet. An end-stage kidney diet will significantly extend the life of a kidney patient. The cost is a matter of opinion. If a veterinarian-recommended food is help- substitute and found in candy sugarless gum muffins and even toothpaste can cause death from liver failure. She also gave us diva-licious advice on the importance of adopting from a rescue or shelter and why it is critical to spay neuter and microchip. Sophia shared tips on eating safer food and treats as well as guides to staying safe during holidays hurricanes and disasters to donate your time or money or to contribute to a shelter rescue wish list. It is a moment in time...but it can live on forever... On that note my sister and my family would like to thank all of the special people who attended Sophia s memorial service and also to those who sent beautiful flowers cards and thoughtful gifts and donations to local rescues and shelters given in Sophia s memory. Representatives from the eight Sarasota and Manatee county animal groups and businesses listed below opened their doors--and their hearts--spending thousands of dollars of their own money to nurse these animals back to health. Both funds and supplies are desperately needed to continue to provide care for these animals who now have a second chance at life. As a community we too can help these animals simply by purchasing and or donating items on the Needed Supplies lists below. Items can either be dropped off at the animal groups or at the five pet businesses at the bottom of the page who have generously agreed to serve as drop-off locations. If you would like supplies to go to a specific group please label your donation with the appropriate name. Monetary donations also can be made online at each animal group s Web site. Botha H ave you ever wondered what your pet is really thinking or feeling Sure it s easy to tell when he is hungry or thirsty just from that pleading look in his eyes when the dinner hour arrives or by the way he picks up his bowl and impatiently plops it at your feet. Or you can sense if she is sad when you grab your keys to head out the door her tail instantly loses its wag and she has that Don t Leave Me look on her face. But wouldn t you really like to know more about what your pet thinks or what he or she is willing--and able--to share with you What if there was a way to establish a deeper level of communication with your pet In her highly skilled role as an animal communicator Wendy Cooper MSW does just that she helps people better understand their pets and what they bring to our lives by connecting with them telepathically. Just what is telepathic animal communication According to Wendy it is a transfer of thoughts and feelings between humans and animals using a means beyond the traditional five senses of touch sound sight taste or smell. Connecting with animals telepathically can greatly enhance our relationships with our pets Wendy continues. These relationships are co-created we pick our pets but they also choose us so that they can fulfill their missions in life. Every animal has a mission which simply explained is the reason the animal is here to serve you during this particular time in your life Wendy adds. Our pets are here to help us be hap- All Photos by Connie Summers pier and healthier. They as spiritual beings also have personal reasons for being here which always are connected to how they can feel happier and healthier too. It is through years of experience and extensive hours of training--what Wendy calls her spiritual muscles --as well as through practice that she has gained such profound insight into the roles animals play in our lives and how they are eager to communicate with us. In her work with animals Wendy has used her skills to communicate with a variety of household pets including dogs cats birds hamsters and other small animals as well as reptiles fish and more. She also has had opportunities to telepathically converse with horses pigs goats chickens cows turkeys and wild animals...all who have had important messages to share. But working as an animal communicator was not Wendy s original path in life. Born and raised in Maryland Wendy launched a successful private practice in the field of psychotherapy after earning her master s degree from the University of Maryland. The chance to explore new opportunities arose in July 2007 when Wendy left the Northeast and relocated to Florida to work on a green building project for a year. When the project was complete however she decided to plant roots and make Southwest Florida her home. It was about 15 years ago that Wendy first became familiar with animal communication when her own dog a Maltese named Zsa Zsa became ill. At first I was skeptical about animal communication so I sought the help of three different communicators Wendy recalls. From the first animal communication session and the communicator s recommendations Zsa Zsa s breakthrough was so profound that she was healed both physically and emotionally. With her own interest piqued in the communication process Wendy enrolled in a class to learn to do animal communication herself. My foray into animal communication first began as a hobby and a fascination with the process Wendy explains. Soon thereafter several of my friends had pets that had crossed over and they asked for my help. My friends quickly felt better and I had such fun things just took off from there. Meanwhile Zsa Zsa was a therapy dog and she had a tremendous impact on clients in my psychotherapy practice Wendy recalls. When I made the transition to a career in green building and no longer saw therapy clients she became extremely depressed. In one session animal communication gave me concrete ways to help Zsa Zsa heal and to find her a new career in which she served in a different way. Since launching her animal communication practice five years ago and pursuing it full time for the past three years Wendy continues to take classes she says to further expand my own toolbox in animal communication skills. While she believes that animal communication is both a talent and a gift Wendy is adamant in her conviction that each and every one of us can cultivate and use these skills to communicate telepathically with our own animals. Telepathic communication is a universal skill we all are born with Wendy explains. It is a form of expression that goes beyond our five senses and occurs when we enter a focused alpha brainwave state or a trance state of consciousness. Animal communication also is an expansion of intuition and consistent practice makes all the difference in developing and mastering telepathic skills Wendy adds. Personally I have had thousands of hours of practice and experience in my work with animals. Sensitivity is an equally important component in fine tuning animal communication skills Wendy says. The more sensitive people are the better equipped they will be in understanding what their animals want to share with them. Wendy s work in the field of animal communication has evolved to include not only holding private sessions with pet owners locally regionally nationally and internationally but also teaching basic-to-advanced animal communication skills in TeleClasses that have reached global audiences. Ninety-five percent of Wendy s private sessions with pet owners are conducted by phone. When doing animal communication it helps to have fewer distractions via my five senses so that I can have clearer access to the pet s messages. This is why it is more effective to complete sessions via the phone Wendy reports. Prior to the conversations pet owners submit photographs of their pets that are currently living with them or have crossed over. Our pets can give us such amazing information Wendy says. They are extremely comfortable communicating telepathically because this is their innate language. While the animals might initially report distress about life they are mostly eager to help us to understand what they need to feel better both physically and emotionally. Their desire to be positive and uplifting is a consistent theme. I recently had a dog tell me that she couldn t stand her leash and she desperately wanted her person to teach her to walk on her own Wendy says. Telepathically the dog shared this explanation Train me to follow your lead as I m smart and need to use the brain and the training will help you to be present and focused. Another dog much preferred that everyone call her by one of the family s nicknames instead of her given name Wendy adds. Continued on Page 38 Finding Comfort Offering Solutions with Animal Communication Although quarterly animal communication sessions are ideal Wendy pinpoints specific times when it can be most beneficial to utilize animal communication skills with our pets. During periods of grief and or guilt for example when our pets are sick or dying or they already have transitioned animal communication can bring relief serenity and a sense of peace when people anticipate or experience the heartbreaking loss of a beloved pet. Animal communication also is helpful for pets who Demonstrate confusing or annoying behavior Must adapt to new family dynamics Experience separation anxiety Must change homes Are introduced to a new family pet Are left behind when the family goes on vacation Most importantly telepathic communication with animals gives pets a voice as well as an opportunity to share their needs and desires. Other messages can be far more revealing as in the case of Jenny a rescued dog and service animal who runs away whenever she does not get at least 10 minutes of walk time per day. If you don t give me a chance to exercise the dog communicated telepathically I will get it myself. These messages can be so useful and ultimately can affect the quality of life of both the animal and his or her human companion Wendy says. More than 50 percent of the private sessions Wendy now holds involve the cross- able on an individual basis or in packages at a discounted rate. Some clients feel complete after just one session Wendy comments. Others choose to have regular connections-- once or twice a month--so that they can share in a powerful spiritual journey with their animals and or ensure that a challenge or issue is being addressed and remedied. Our pets are constantly here to offer us wisdom for our own paths. It is fun and extremely enlightening to access these profound messages from our animals for our personal journeys. pursuing further study after completing Animal Communication 101. Wendy will be hosting her next TeleClass on Monday March 24 and Monday March 31 from 6 00 to 8 00 p.m. For additional information or to register for the TeleClass visit www.animalcommunication.biz. Wendy s masterful ability to foster communication heal both animals and people and strengthen bonds between humans and their pets was recently recognized here in our own community when she was voted Best Animal Communicator in Sarasota Pet s Choice Awards in 2013. over process--or death--before during and after. People experience excruciating heartache during their pet s transition back to the spirit world and through animal communication they can find solace and serenity Wendy says. Animals have a different perception of death than humans do to them it is a natural progression in their spiritual journey not an ending. And they are eager to give their person specific assignments both before and after their passing that will help to lessen pain and suffering for both the pet and the person. The animals are also clear when they want help (via euthanasia) and when they prefer to pass on their own. Moreover we sometimes do Reiki and other healing processes from past trauma during the session which helps on many levels. Animal communication can be especially beneficial in helping children cope For pet owners interested in developing their own skills in communicating with their animals Wendy offers TeleClasses that include review of a Power Point presentation and a live conference call via telephone or Skype no Internet access is necessary. Each two-hour TeleClass is two sessions held one week apart. Participants can learn how to communicate with their animals from any location including the comfort of their own homes. The classes are small so that each person receives personal guidance. The Animal Communication 101 TeleClass helps people gain confidence in their ability to connect with animals in their own language and give them messages to help them feel safe and loved Wendy says. People can learn the basics of animal communication. For example they can learn how to let the animals Sooooooo grateful to have you in my life. So grateful for the work you do. It s far beyond beautiful. Don t have words to describe it. --Nancy Fallston Maryland with the loss of a beloved pet Wendy adds. It teaches them to understand the life process which includes transitioning out of the body. Private sessions with Wendy are availknow when they will be returning home from vacation and how to meet other basic needs and preferences of their pets. Advanced TeleClasses also are available for individuals who are interested in In addition to her intuitive work with animals Wendy also is a Reiki Level II practitioner and co-author of the highly acclaimed book The Spirit of Women Entrepreneurs. But it is Wendy s work in animal communication helping both people and pets that brings her the most joy and fulfillment. Animals are our friends our companions Wendy says. They show us how to discover the magic of life and to reconnect to what life is all about. They are seemingly so simple in nature and yet they have so much wisdom. Our pets are here to serve us and themselves she adds. The onus really is upon us to understand our job as stewards and caretakers of our animals and this can easily be achieved by truly listening to them. Animal communication Wendy continues is the bridge that allows us to understand animals and ourselves and enables us to embrace life in ways that we never dreamed possible. Botha When a good idea ignites success why stop there That might just be the motto of local entrepreneur Bob Huff a mid-Western native who now splits his time between his hometown of Dayton Ohio and his new home in Sarasota. In the summer of 2012 Mr. Huff and his wife Lynne opened the highly acclaimed Bayside Pet Resort & Spa located at 8154 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Offering five-star amenities for dogs and cats the upscale resort and spa spans 22 000 square feet and provides full-grooming services as well as indoor and outdoor fun for day visitors and overnight boarders with top-of-the-line accommodations throughout. Although Mr. Huff s background and expertise is in the health care industry which through the years he parlayed into the development of a 70 million nursing home administration company a heartfelt love of animals was his inspiration to shun retirement and instead embark on a new path in providing state-of-the-art services for pet owners and their beloved canine and feline companions here in Sarasota. It wasn t long after Bayside Pet Resort & Spa launched that Mr. Huff s creative wheels were already in motion. A second location. A different clientele. A growing community need. Mr. Huff addressed them all with the opening of Bayside Pet Spa. Located at 8405 Honore Avenue in University Park the 2 400 square foot doggie day care facility and grooming spa is a luxurious yet intimate setting with a charming ambiance and captivating interior fashioned by famed designer Jennifer Blaha of Atlanta Georgia. Officially open for business since December 19 2013 the Parisian-themed spa is in essence luxury redefined. Indoor and outdoor black-and-white striped canopies. Crystal chandeliers. Wrought iron benches. Hand-painted murals with the detail of a bustling boulevard in France. Replicas of the Eiffel Tower (even one for small canines to climb on )...all the finest accoutrements are here to capture the spirit of an authentic Parisian experience. But don t let the finery fool you--the new spa is both Bayside Pet Spa located at 8405 Honore Avenue in University Park. According to Marilee Namake general manager of Bayside Pet Resort & Spa and its new sister facility the Honore Avenue spa was created with a specific canine clientele in mind. Our vision was to create a more intimate environment for people dogs or the Velcro dogs that are content to spend most of their time at their owners sides Marilee says. These pups need lots of one-on-one attention and TLC and that s what Bayside Pet Spa was designed to provide. Our day care also offers a more laid back and intimate environment which is ideal for dogs that are intimidated by large play groups Marilee adds. Each pup that stays and plays at Bayside Pet Spa has his or her own Private Patio stocked with a comfy elevated bed a cozy blanket and chilled spring water--the perfect place to relax and snooze. There are 22 open-air patios in all--six for large dogs and 16 for smaller pups--that are both safe and as close to cage free as possible. A day spent at the spa includes supervised potty breaks in the fenced-in yard equipped with high-quality odor-free artificial turf to ensure a safe sanitary environment. Pups who are welcome to stay for an hour or two or all day also can enjoy Cuddle Time with their very own human Pet Pals and Playtime in the Park either one-on-one play or a romp with a small group of canine buddies in Bayside Pet Spa s Parisian-themed indoor park. Other day care amenities include supervised exercise on an indoor treadmill specifically designed for dogs. Here pups can Bayside Pet Spa s retreat for a soothing massage or treadmill run. Photo by Connie Summers unleash their inner athletes and enjoy an exhilarating walk or run that promotes physical and emotional well being. And for the ultimate pampering experience pups can savor a soothing relaxing massage with one of Bayside Pet Spa s certified canine massage therapists who are skillfully trained to minimize stress and maximize bliss. For pet owners who would like their pups to experience group play during the day or enjoy an overnight stay at Bayside Pet Resort & Spa the Honore Avenue spa provides field trips via shuttle service to and from its Tamiami Trail location which features large outdoor play parks. Bayside Pet Spa also serves as a convenient drop-off point for pet owners who live in the Lakewood Ranch University Park area but would like their pets to spend the day or board overnight at the Tamiami Trail resort. In addition to luxurious doggie day care accommodations Bayside Pet Spa has answered another prevalent need in the University Park community by bringing unparalleled grooming services to the area. Talk about a little slice of heaven The menu of services has been carefully crafted to bring out the best in every pup--from the top of his head to the tip of his tail With a team of expert groomers on site Bayside Pet Spa caters to every canine need from a simple Brush & Fluff or a Mini Spa Groom to a Spa Bath and Deluxe Spa Groom. With three different selections--the Ultimate Relaxation the Pampered Pup and the Fun-Loving Pup --your best friend will be begging for more. In keeping with Bayside Pet Spa s policy of providing a cagefree environment freshly groomed pups also enjoy their own private patios until it s time to head home. In just three short months since its opening Bayside Pet Spa already has made its mark in the local animal community. Like its predecessor Bayside Pet Spa lends a helping hand by grooming dogs for the Humane Society of Sarasota County and spotlights the pups on the spa s Facebook page. With a new do and a photo op we help to increase the chances that each adoptable dog we groom will find its forever home Marilee says. In the months to come the staff at Bayside Pet Spa also plans to host adoption events for area animal groups as well as special events for clients and their canines. Bayside Pet Spa s private patios for both large and small dogs. Photo courtesy of Bayside Pet Spa This past February for example the staff hosted its first event-- a Doggie & Me Massage Night complete with wine and cheese for two-legged guests and free mini massages for both humans and canines. Attendees were encouraged to bring donations-- unopened food or gently used dog and cat items--for Pip s Pantry a community fund initiated at Bayside Pet Resort & Spa to help area pet owners in need. With the opening of The Mall at University Town Center slated for October 2014 Bayside Pet Spa is anticipating a surge in clients and canines as shoppers from near and far take advantage of the doggie day services that will be available just a short distance from the mall which currently is in development at the intersection of Interstate 75 and University Parkway. While Mom and Dad spend the day shopping their pups can come in for grooming and a bath and enjoy play time in the indoor park Marilee says. We saw a need in the area and we are certain that people will take advantage of the unparalleled services and loving care we provide. Will another great idea ignite even more success for the Bayside Pet Resort family Well it seems only time will tell. Located at 8405 Honore Avenue in University Park Bayside Pet Spa is open Monday through Friday from 7 30 a.m. to 6 30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 00 a.m. to 4 00 p.m. The spa is closed on Sunday. By Candace T. Botha or Laura Gaughan Miller Santa Claus arrived early in December last year when the Parrish resident won the Jingle Paws Jubilee Holiday Giveaway As part of the festivities at the Third Annual Jingle Paws Jubilee held at Twin Lakes Park on December 1 a special raffle was held to raise money for all of the local animal groups that participated in the event. The grand prize included a Fabulous Spa Day for the winner and his or her canine companion. Local businesses graciously donated gift certificates for the grand prize winner. These Sarasota-based businesses included Beverly Hills Dog Abundant Life Massage Spa Alexuana and Molly s A Unique and Chic Boutique. Professional pet photographer Connie Summers agreed to take a portrait of the winner and his or her pet who as part of the prize also would be featured in Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet magazines. Laura was present at the event when the winner was announced and she was beyond thrilled to hear her name called. I was overjoyed to win because I never can seem to find the F time to do what I need to take care of myself Laura says. And with good reason After a successful career in real estate and a lucrative position with the Florida Department of Transportation Laura now does all she can to help area nonprofit organizations that need a helping hand in her role as a volunteer. Originally from Bethlehem Pennsylvania Laura moved to Florida 30 years ago. She sold real estate in Volusia County for 10 years before managing a national real estate office. She then spent several years working as a right-of-way agent for the Florida Department of Transportation. Married with two children Laura always was actively involved as a volunteer when her son and daughter were in school. From kindergarten through high school I never missed a field trip with either of my children Laura says. I also was a Track Mom Cheer Mom and Class Mom and I served as the secretary and vice president of the PTSA for a high school with an enrollment of 2 600 students. Laura s husband Robert also has done admirable work with several veteran organizations including Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Veterans Administration. Laura is most proud of the fact that everyone in her family earned their four-year degrees at Florida schools. While Robert graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Laura earned her degree in psychology at University of Central Florida (UCF). Her son Garett graduated from the University of Florida and is now pursuing his PhD in Environmental Engineering at Purdue and her daughter Janelle graduated from UCF with a degree in Forensic Psychology. She now works with troubled children at Devereux in Orlando. Without a doubt volunteer work is in Laura s blood. During her real estate career Laura chaired several professional development committees and raised funds for a variety of different charities. Since her children left home to pursue their education and careers Laura continues to spend many hours each week helping others. She is a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Manatee County and she volunteers at Habitat for Humanity in Ellenton two mornings a week where the nonprofit group currently is building 16 homes for low-income families. For more than a year Laura also has been volunteering at The Ranch Nate s Honor Animal Rescue s adoption center on Lorraine Road in Bradenton working hands-on with the animals that are brought to the facility. It s not surprising that Laura s volunteer work led her to Nate s Honor Animal Rescue. She is an animal lover with two dogs of her own--Dash a 16-year-old Jack Russell Terrier and Scruffy a 12-year-old Cairn Terrier. Since February when Nate s Honor Animal Rescue brought in 81 dogs and cats from the Manatee County raid that continues to make news in local headlines Laura has been volunteering at the Lorraine Road adoption center five days a week. It was because of her volunteer work with Nate s Honor Animal Rescue that Laura attended Jingle Paws Jubilee in December. I had never attended the event before and I brought one of 44 Meet the Winners of the Jingle March April 2014 Sarasota Pet & Manatee Pet the rescue dogs from Nate s with me that day Laura recalls. While I was there I decided to buy raffle tickets for the Jingle Paws Jubilee Holiday Giveaway. Later in the afternoon I brought the dog back to Nate s and told Dari Ogelsby the executive director that I was headed back to the event Laura continues. Dari told me that it wasn t necessary to go back because there were enough volunteers there. However I told Dari that I wanted to go back because I was going to win the holiday giveaway she adds with a smile. And that she did Laura was thrilled to win the grand prize which included a free groom for her dog at Beverly Hills Dog in Sarasota a doggie massage with Jenifer Funk at Abundant Life Massage in Sarasota a one-hour Swedish massage and facial as well as a manicure pedicure and professional haircut at Spa Alexauna in Sarasota a Vera Bradley collar and leash for one of her dogs and a 20 gift certificate to Molly s A Chic and Unique Boutique in Sarasota and gift certificates to two pet-friendly restaurants in Sarasota. Also included in the giveaway was the chance to be featured on the cover and in the pages of Sarasota Pet and Manatee Pet magazines Not to show favoritism Laura brought both Dash and Scruffy to Beverly Hills Dog where she had a chance to meet the owner Peejay Ovadia. Peejay was just awesome Laura says. I love Beverly Hills Dog and Peejay was super super sweet. Laura has since brought Dash and Scruffy back to Beverly Hills Dog for another groom to get them camera-ready for their cover shoot. For the doggie massage Laura decided to bring Kris Kringle one of Nate s Honor Animal Rescue s adoptable dogs to Abundant Life Massage in Sarasota where Laura had an opportunity to spend time with Jenifer Funk BME LMT NMT CCMT NCTMB a licensed massage therapist and certified educator Jenifer lowered the massage table and Kris Kringle jumped right up and stretched out I m not kidding Laura recalls. He loved every minute of it he instantly became a Zen dog. Laura snapped several photos during the massage session. And from the photo at right it s clear that Jenifer and Kris Kringle shared an immediate connection. Jenifer s a great lady Laura comments. With much anticipation for her own spa experience Laura made an appointment at Spa Alexauna where she met the owner Natalie who was certain that the giveaway winner was treated like royalty. I enjoyed a heavenly one-hour Swedish massage and facial with Katie Laura says. Then Linze cut my hair and Molly gave me the best manicure and pedicure I ever have had...seriously From Molly s A Chic and Unique Boutique Laura also received a 20 gift certificate along with a black-and-white Vera Bradley collar and leash that Dash wears proudly. Thank you for EVERYTHING Laura says emphatically and with heartfelt appreciation. For a woman who gives back so generously--and so willingly--to help people and animals in need surely you would agree that no one is more deserving of a special day of pampering and relaxation than this caring and dedicated volunteer. From top to bottom Dash & Scruffy enjoy a luxurious bath at Beverly Hills Dog Jenifer Funk shares a wet kiss with Kris Kringle at Abundant Life Massage Scruffy (above) and Dash (at left) are groomed to perfection at Beverly Hills Dog. A great deal of health improvements have been noticed not only in animals but also in pet owners who consume Ted s Aloe Vera. What really got me wondering is why are there so many seniors getting the awful disease known as Alzheimer s Just recently there was a study on how the brain cells shrink when we are sleeping. It is during these few hours when we are in our deepest sleep that our immune system cleans out all of the toxic garbage including a protein known as amyloid which causes damage to the brain. Through years of working with the juices of the Aloe-Vera plant and Nopal Cactus I learned that these juices contain a certain enzyme called protease. The job of this enzyme is to remove any surplus of protein throughout the body including the brain. Damage to the brain cells is caused the protein amyloid. A surface protein named PirB causes a soluble cluster form culminating in the destruction of the synapses. I cannot make the claim that the enzyme protease will clean out the amyloid protein during sleep but would it not be worth the few dollars spent on the Aloe Cactus Juice to try it My wish is that someday studies will be done to find cures using our own immune systems Please feel free to call me if you might have some questions or comments.
