With the ocean on one side and the Everglades on the other we live in one of the most unique and fragile ecosystems on the globe. I ve come to appreciate our semitropical climate and spent a couple of decades trying to develop a yard that s eco-friendly. That includes providing water sources for wildlife host plants for butterflies minimizing fertilizer use employing drip irrigation and using mulch instead of water gulping grass. One of the biggest trends in sustainability is how green practices can save money. Parkland for example is considering a O green rebate program that would allow residents to install solar hot water and photovoltaic systems and pay it back over 20 years. The amount of money saved on energy costs could end up being more than paying for the system. And Coral Springs is going hightech with a pilot program that uses RFID tags so residents can get credits to use at local businesses. Sally Nicholas who previously wrote our monthly Publisher s Note continues with our group. She and I are creating an exciting new publication. The MAYOR beautiful South Florida weather MICHAEL UDINE over the last few months has really shown all of us why Parkland is such a great place to live and the rest of the nation is taking notice. On March 25 I was in Washington D.C. representing Parkland as one of only W elcome to Spring It s a great four cities in the nation as winners of the Generations United and Metlife s America s Best Intergenerational Communities. An intergenerational community is not just one where multiple generations reside it is one where individuals of all ages are an integral and valued part of the setting. This perspective is reflected in the families structures facilities and services that PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 18 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM While we are happy and gratified that a large percentage of our residents are extremely satisfied with the services of the city we are constantly looking to improve in all areas. MICHAEL UDINE children youth and older adults encounter in the community as well as in day-to-day interactions and relationships. March also brought us another edition of our passport to Parkland. On March 15 all city departments held an exhibition in which the public was given information about what each department in the City does for our residents. There are so many things for you to take advantage of and I encourage you to make sure you check out our website www.cityofparkland.org for more information. We are fast approaching our strategic planning sessions. We do this each year to set budget and policy priorities. As we have some new commission members we will hold a full blown strategic planning session to update out priorities and work flow. We appreciate all your input and ideas as we gather throughout the year. We use the city survey responses and the public s input to come up with plans and ideas. We take into account the public s wants and needs as the city formulates budgets and policy initiatives for the future. PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 19 messagefrom thesheriff By Sherif Scott Israel BSO CPIS Sheriff Scott Israel is a 32-year veteran of law enforcement. His leadership and experience earned him the support of Broward County residents and in January 2013 he became the 16th elected sheriff of Broward County. He can be reached at ask_the_ sheriff sheriff.org. ne of my priorities as sheriff of Broward County has been to protect our county s future and that future rests in the lives and in the hands of today s children. The social and emotional well-being of our children is something I take very seriously. Unfortunately Broward County ranks high among Florida counties for the number of monthly child abuse reports. Child abuse and neglect can be triggered by a persistent economic crisis and the increased stressors that come with it however there is no excuse for caregivers putting any child s safety at risk. For the past 14 years the Broward Sheriff s Office has assumed full responsibility for child abuse investigations in Broward County. Our Child Protective Investigations Section (CPIS) embraces this responsibility by collaborating with other law enforcement agencies mental health substance abuse and social services community partners. In 2013 there were 14 150 Broward child abuse investigations a slight increase from 2012. BSO CPIS also referred 1 100 families to dependency court to oversee families warranting child protective services last year. Domestic violence and substance abuse issues were the most prevalent factors in these cases. The majority of BSO CPIS investigations involved collaborations with multiple agencies to determine services and child safety options. BSO also embraces using less restrictive actions whenever possible. The agency referred another 1 400 families to family preservation programs under agreements with BSO to aid families and reduce child-welfare recidivism. Protecting Broward Families O The additional funding from the state s proposed 2014-15 budget if adopted by the legislature will enable BSO (and all Florida sheriffs offices) to improve the outcomes for the at-risk children with whom we work. The proposed budget commits more than 31 million for child protection services piloted by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and an additional 8 million to fund the sheriffs offices that conduct child protective services. The safety of our county s children and families is critically important and this additional funding will allow CPIS to have resources that are vital to this essential task. Currently BSO has 69 active investigators. The average caseload per investigator is approximately 22 cases which is higher than the DCF-recommended maximum of 15 cases per investigator. BSO CPIS needs more eyes in the field and we need to ensure our investigators have the tools they need to make better decisions for our families. This funding will not only put BSO within standard recommendations for best practices but it will also greatly improve the outcomes for the at-risk children in our county. Our entire community shares in the responsibility of protecting children who are often reluctant to come forward to report abuse for fear of retaliation. They sometimes feel helpless and without hope. It is up to us the community to ensure our children remain safe and protected. The Broward Sheriff s Office embraces community prevention efforts. BSO CPIS directs our families with problems to get suitable help treatment and services before family issues worsen and child harm results. As of October 1 2012 Florida law expanded and now requires any person who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that any child is abused to report such knowledge or suspicion to the Florida Abuse Hotline 1.800.96. ABUSE. CPIS can be contacted at 954.797.5299. If you see something say something to your local law enforcement agency. All families deserve to live in communities with resources and information that provide safe and healthy experiences for our children. State Road 7 Margate FL 33063 PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 29 entertainment By J.P. Faber A Shrine to Jazz When it comes to the appreciation of pure jazz ........ 30 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 ..............................nothing comes close to Boca Raton s Jazziz Jazziz Nightlife 201 Plaza Real Boca Raton 561.300.0730 A pril is Jazz Appreciation Month so it s only appropriate that some appreciation be given to Jazziz the only club in Palm Beach County or Broward County for that matter that is entirely devoted to a genre of music that is entirely American. Having originated at the beginning of the 20th Century in the Southern United States notably within the African-American communities jazz is now far more mainstream incorporating elements from American pop music. Nonetheless jazz with its use of blue notes improvisation polyrhythms and syncopation remains a unique sound. And there is no place better to hear it than at Jazziz in Boca Raton. Just shy of a year old Jazziz is the brainchild of Dr. Michael Fagien who pursued a medical career to pay the bills while founding the premiere magazine about the music he loved. With the financial backing of his partner Dr. Robert Cade (the inventor of Gatorade) Fagien founded Jazziz Magazine in 1983. Today Jazziz publishes a print version quarterly and a monthly version digitally. Among other things Jazziz was the first magazine to package a CD inside. Fagien also started a record label with famed jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour which generated a best-selling album A Twist of Jobim which Ritenour and others will be reprising this month at the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center in Miami. Since then Fagien has taken his love of the genre to the next level with the Jazziz Nightlife restaurant at Mizner Park. Jazziz is one of those places that simply has to exist. It is such a needed part of the cultural scene of South Palm Beach and Northern Broward counties that it s hard to imagine that it hasn t always been there. And when it comes to jazz music this is the real deal. During the weeknights Jazziz books some of the biggest names in the Jazz world those of the Jason Marsalis Lee Ritenour or Kyle Eastwood level or local legends like Nicole Henry. On the weekends the bands are not as well known but still solid pricing reflects the shift with tickets (typically 25 to 65) required for weekday headliners but not for the weekend bands. Beyond the music itself Jazziz exudes the feeling of a real nightclub the type of place you d only come across in New York or Chicago. The tables are covered with white linen and all have good views of the elevated stage which is backed by a red velvet curtain. The walls are adorned with huge images of jazz greats like Dave Brubeck Miles Davis and Billie Holiday. The d cor is modern wood paneling with wooden chandeliers. The kitchen is open but disappears behind a heavy black curtain when the music starts. The food is not to be ignored either. Executive chef Justin Flit who worked for Chef Oliver Saucy at Caf Maxx in Pompano and attended the French Culinary Institute in New York does a great job with scallops salmon and beef along with an exceptional duck breast and a super slow braised veal osso bucco. (Entr es run 21 to 35 and steaks run 35 to 48 with one 18 oz. ribeye for the famished at 59). If you are lucky Dr. Fagien will introduce the headliners and share a few anecdotes with you before the music begins. Regardless as he puts it This is the best club in the world for what we do. Play on doctor. The highlight of his 20-year career as a Coral Springs firefighter career came the day the City Manager called to say the city had made its selection and Babinec ended as the last man upright after a national search. To receive that call was an honor and something I will never forget Babinec told the Sun Sentinel. I m proud of this city it s invested a lot in me and I m truly proud be able serve this community. But from a personal standpoint nothing stands next to saving a human life. When you have the opportunity to do that nothing compares to it. That s why we do what we do. Babinec is in charge of eight stations in the Coral Springs Parkland area protecting about 140 000 people. He has served as interim chief since Mark Curran retired in 2013 and he oversees more than 170 firefighters. He also has a bachelor s degree in organizational leadership from St. Thomas University and an MBA in public administration from Columbia Southern University in Alabama. We have an annual budget of 27 million and that money is spread out to cover a lot of resources including the purchase of new equipment and medical supplies payroll and benefits and paying the utilities of each fire station he told the Sentinel. We want to continue to evolve and grow and those allocations help make that happen. Lou Cimaglia is leading the cause a man who organized a golf tournament and a concert for veterans last year during the city s 50th anniversary. It is a very very sacred thing Cimaglia told the Sun Sentinel recently. We will soon send a letter in requesting the wall. It will take anywhere between a few months to two years to get it as the wall moves around the country. Among those also patiently waiting for the work is Bill Vasquez president of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs and the local commander of the U.S. Submarine Veterans. It was in Davie a couple of years ago he told the Sentinel. We went as a group to see the wall. One of the names on the wall is that of a friend who grew up in our neighborhood in Austin Texas. He was like a little brother to me. I have spoken to many people in town who were in Vietnam or have lost friends there says Cimaglia. They are ready to jump on board. Here are their collective first impressions. Delivering the group s reaction to the novel is Eileen Reiback who leads the book discussions at the Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs. In Your Own Words This is a collection of literary short stories by a Nobel Prize-winning Canadian author. The stories are about ordinary people whose everyday decisions take their lives in unexpected directions. The last four stories are semi-autobiographical sketches from the author s youth. First Impressions Some members were uncomfortable with the short story genre which jumps into a slice of life with no beginning or ending. It left those readers unsympathetic with the characters. In other cases members found the writing beautifully crafted capturing the essence of a character or situation in a short number of pages. Many complained that the stories ended abruptly leaving the reader wanting more explanation or closure. Favorite Part Several stories had a twist at the end such as In Sight of the Lake and Corrie. Lessons Learned This was the first Alice Munro story collection I ve read and it will probably be the last. I was disappointed especially considering that she has won many prizes and accolades for her stories. Men were often depicted as manipulative and women as weak and indecisive. Sometimes it was difficult to determine the motives of the characters. The collection was only rated an average of three out of five stars by members of the group so it was not one of our most-enjoyed books. However the executives at AMA Waterways as well as Avalon Waterways Uniworld Boutique River Cruising and Viking River to mention a few can tell you they are catering more to the big ship ocean cruisers who have grown to love the experience of traveling around on their floating hotel and visiting multiple destinations on one vacation. Destinations they would miss with ocean crusing. Now you can cruise on the Rhine river from Amsterdam to picturesque towns in Germany which include Cologne Heidelberg and Strasbourg and then go on to Switzerland and Basel. When cruising the Danube you ll visit the cities of Prague Vienna and Budapest in Eastern Europe. You can cruise on the Mosel through Germany and Luxemburg. But where an Ocean Cruise cannot take you is deep into a country to the little villages and towns to become part of the destination you re visiting. You can still enjoy the amazing benefits of cruising and yet have this deeply moving experience of conveniently visiting small towns and having more time in port on a river cruise. River cruises started to take off in the 90s but in the last 10 years are really exploding When the river cruise market began it was to entice travelers who were used to traveling throughout Europe on bus tours. It was the opinion of Jimmy Murphy when he founded Burg Landshut Castle Rhine River Exclusive Wine River Cruises on AMA Waterways Rhine River France on the Rhone River through Russia on the Volga River or Spain and Portugal on the Douro River. It doesn t matter where you take a river cruise you ll totally be embraced by the culture and history of the city you are in without ever boarding a bus or repacking a suitcase There are many river cruise companies to choose from too. Most of the cruise options you have include this quieter more relaxing cruise along with all your meals sightseeing taxes and other options depending on the company. Most of these cruises will also include or at least offer pre and post hotel stays to make the vacation even more spectacular. What is really nice about these cruises is that you ll have more time in the towns you want to explore than you normally would on an ocean cruise. Your cruise may arrive very early in the morning and in some ports not depart until hours after dinner leaving you ample time to really roam and get the flavor of the town you re in. Many people dine on board and then get off the boat again to walk around the village and get a feel for what the night life is like. The other really nice benefit of the river cruise is you are right in the center of the town and when you step off the vessel you can walk--and in many cases bicycle--around the town. AMA Waterways is the first company to now include a minimum of 30 free of charge bicycles on each of their ships. This gives guests an opportunity to bicycle around the city and in some cases even bicycle ahead to the next port and meet up with the ship. It s a fabulous memorable way to travel. If you ever thought of river cruising just as a vacation for retired people you may be pleasantly surprised to find that there are offerings for many different kinds of travelers many of them younger couples. These habitats included three ecosystems of low hammock cypress swamps and pine flatwoods. Not only does each system host specialized plant species unique to the elevation and soil type but each provides a habitat for a variety of species of birds mammals and amphibians. Some of the species of birds that can be found include wood ducks ospreys herons ibis red tailed hawks and more. Another eco-friendly facet of the club is the 2.64-acre botanical garden with water features. The intent of the garden is to educate visitors about Floridian ecosystems by incorporating a variety of native plants and interpretive information throughout the design. Since receiving the honor the Greg Norman-designed 18-hole championship golf course has maintained its rating through annual reports that run the gamut on chemical records fertility and water tests etc. in addition to an Audubon International site review. In addition to FPL s current solar rebate programs for local Parkland residents a new PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program was recently introduced at a Parkland City Commission workshop. The environmental program would provide financial assistance to residents looking to make their homes more energy efficient. While FPL continues to offer rebates for residents who install photovoltaic and solar water heating systems in their homes the new PACE program makes the city a middleman whereby the city would help participants obtain financing and the special assessment levied on each property would be paid off by the property owner on their bill over a maximum of 20 years. This is a program that is nationwide and gaining steam in Florida said Public Works director Brian Archer to city officials after the meeting. Broward County is using it. So is the state and some cities like Hollywood. . . . The city might have to put some upfront costs that it can later on recoup. . . . The assessment goes with the property and not the property owner. What s unique about the PACE program is how it overcomes the barriers to the adoption of clean energy that conventional financing options cannot. For example PACE eliminates the need to pay out of pocket for the project and repayment is spread out over 20 years keeping monthly payments low enough that your utility savings may exceed your payment. Mayor Michael Udine a proponent of the program says It is a great thing if we can do it. It really is minimal to next to no cost for the city. . . . It is a way for our residents to do a very expensive program and kind of internally finance it themselves I d like to see it happen. CORAL SPRINGS S WASTE PRO Not to be outdone Coral Springs s Waste Pro has recently announced a pilot recycling rewards program that will offer singlefamily residents the opportunity to save money on purchases from local businesses. Each blue recycling cart contains a Radio Frequency Identification Code chip that provides information about residents recycling participation. This program is designed to increase recycling and residents privacy is protected. Every time residents in a single-family home recycle they will be credited so that they can print their savings from several Coral Springs businesses. Single-family homes are automatically entered into this recycling program. All these residents need to do is activate their account online at www.WasteProRewards.com to access coupon rewards. The program will run through Aug. 31. Then it will be evaluated for its impact on recycling participation. Multi-family residents will be able to participate starting June 1. Local businesses can even advertise for free through this program. Parkland and Coral Springs s sustainability programs are part of a national trend to think green while saving green that has emerged over the last seven years. It s expansive neat and overwhelming all at the same time. But what if you wanted to recreate your own world of butterflies in your backyard We spoke with Butterfly World s Jessica McAtee who teaches a class on creating butterfly gardens every month to get three tips on how to build them. more 56 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 The main thing you need to know anywhere you re gardening is about the local butterflies in your area. Jessica McAtee PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 57 feature The main thing you need to know anywhere you re gardening is about the local butterflies in your area McAtee says. You need to know specifically what kind of bugs you re trying to attract by name and then you have to complete that equation with what one plant they lay their eggs on. Each butterfly has a specific plant (there about 60 species of plants in Florida) that attracts its caterpillars. That s where most people miss butterfly gardening she adds. There s this disconnect where people want to put flowers in their yard. And with good reason. Adult butterflies feed off flowers but the goal in creating your own garden isn t to attract the big guys it s in making the big guys. Some [butterflies] as far as we know only have one plant. And it might seriously be this ugly scrappy weedy plant so if you want that butterfly you have to have that plant she says. You can visit butterflyworld.com for an exhaustive list of the necessary plants for each butterfly. No.1 Know your bugs 3 TIPS TO START YOUR OWN BUTTERFLY GARDEN butterflies takes just three weeks. McAtee has her own garden at home with about 40 different species of plants and she doesn t just consider it a frivolous and fun activity it s something that has shaped her perspective on life something she recommends everyone at least try. There s just nothing harried about watching nature take its time and build something she says. It teaches you to just be patient and calm in all walks of life. Now that you know the basics here s what you need to know about what to include in your garden. Plant larval foods. Many caterpillars which metamorphose into butterflies require specific host plants for food. By selecting particular plant species you can provide the basic habitat requirements for specific butterflies that you d like to see in your garden. Since highly preferred hosts may be unattractive or eaten until they have few leaves plan to put these plants in an out-of-the-way place. Plant nectar sources for adults. Butterflies are attracted by sweet- pungent- and acrid-smelling flowers that are blue orange yellow pink purple and red. Plants with deep throated drooping or enclosed flowers are unsuitable for nectar-gathering. Avoid pesticide use Especially avoid any broad-spectrum insecticides that can harm butterflies and their larvae. Below is a chart of common butterflies found in South Florida and what host nectar plants you can cultivate to attract them. BUTTERFLY NECTAR SOURCE Saw-toothed Palmetto Cabbage Palm Avocado Butterfly Bush White Indigo Berry Aster Buddleia Joe-Pye Weed Alfalfa Spanish needles creeping charlie Joe-Pye Weed Dogbane Buddleia Alfalfa Aster Clover Verbena Aster Zinnia Milkweed Beggar-tick Daisy Stonecrop Clover Aster Dandelion Goldenrod Mallow Thistle Beggar-tick Goldenrod Milkweed PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 Did you know Because it eats milkweed leaves as a caterpillar the Monarch butterfly is also poisonous. People call here all the time like there s spiders in my garden or there s birds McAtee says. And I kindly remind them we didn t invent this process -- I usually actually sing the Lion King song. It s the circle of life. This is what happens. In the wild just one out of every 100 butterfly eggs makes it out according to McAtee and animals -- like birds lizards and dragonflies -- eating the plant and sometimes the caterpillars is necessary. The tomato soup was comforting and reminded me of my grandmother s recipe. The sun-dried tomato hummus is a simple blend of flavors with a thick but smooth consistency that pairs well with the falafel balls and the mix of nuts and tomatoes in the center. The turkey meatballs were so well-prepared with seasoning that they nearly tasted like beef and are very hearty for even a small plate serving. The falafel itself has a firm toasted outside and a tender inside almost like a good steak or meatball and was infused with a mix of herbs and seasoning which made them good enough to eat alone or with hummus. Or if you prefer the real thing the Bistro burger made with Angus beef and served open-faced on a flatbread is juicy with each bite. It s amazing that something that seemed so remote and untamed is so close to where we live. The two-mile dusty stretch to the Fish Camp is lined with tall sawgrass but quirky signs let you know you are going in the right direction. A rustic sign that read Mack s Fish Camp was followed by airboats and swamp buggies until finally reaching the cabins. We were greeted by Marshall Jones his wife Nicole their children and some family friends. Johnny Cash was playing in the background as the group gathered around a bonfire in front of a large chicken hut that overlooked the dark swampy waters. The kids were entertained as the grown-ups lit firecrackers and bottle rockets. Friday night fireworks We were welcomed with smiles offered a drink and given a handful of fireworks. We felt right at home as we joined in the fun and watched the bottle rockets glide across the water. This is what we do on Friday nights says Marshall. There s no other place I d rather be just look at my backyard he says as he points at the vast land around him. It started to drizzle and one of Marshall s friends suggested it was the perfect time to go frogging. As a true gladesman Marshall s eyes lit up but he then decided it had been a long day and called it a night. Marshall and his twin brother Keith are proprietors of one of the last fish camps in South Florida. The Jones brothers and their families are among the few descendants of pioneer gladesmen who still live in the area. Mack Senior their great grandfather purchased the land in 1938 when it was one of the most remote outposts in the area and the twins grew up there. Back then the Everglades was a new territory and largely unconquered says Marshall. My great grandfather was drawn here because of the vast unexplored land. We retired for the night and went into our cabin. The air-conditioned cabin had a queen bed and loft-style space that can sleep four children comfortably. It also featured a mini fridge microwave and a coffee machine it wasn t the Ritz but we had everything we needed. Abundant fishing We woke up the next morning at around 8 30 a.m. I poured myself a cup of coffee walked outside and sat on a bench overlooking the water. One of the few permanent residents of the camp was shooing her dogs away from the water s edge she smiled said good morning and at told me that one of the gators got one PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 76 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM Clockwise from left A wooden sign points the way to Mack s Fish Camp fossilized metal tools a pair of docked airboats of her dogs a few weeks back. We exchanged a few pleasantries and I headed back to my cabin. We decided to try our luck at some bass fishing. The cabin rentals include use of a canoe but we wanted something with a little more muscle and shelled out 50 to rent a motorized flat-bottom jon boat. As we zipped around a nine-mile stretch of water we saw sunbathing turtles alligators and anhingas the latter are also called snake birds for the appearance of their heads when they are sticking out of the water. A couple of hours of good catches prompted us to head back. Pete the water dog As we approached the dock we noticed a huge gator lurking in the water as the Jones kids were swinging off a rope close by. We naively warned Keith. Oh that s our water dog Pete he said. He asked if we wanted him to call Pete over and skeptically we complied. Keith then started making calling sounds and tapping the water low and behold Pete swam toward us. Keith walked over and knelt almost eye level to the reptile and started petting the creature and said See Just like a dog. Marshall says Our family has a unique relationship with the wildlife here in the everglades. We have several alligators we know by name. We have a special relationship with these animals we are able to communicate with them and they respond. Pete watches after the kids when they go swimming. He swims out around us in a perimeter and wards off rogue gators that could possibly be dangerous. PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 He reassures us that alligators have the demeanor of a dog rather than a cold-blooded killer. Guides tours pristine locations If you are looking for some serious bass fishing Mack s offers guided fishing trips by airboat or bass boat I recommend the airboat which can access hidden fishing holes that regular boats can t reach. The water is as pristine as it gets very clean the fishing is Mack s Fish Camp phenomenal says Marshall. During the fall and spring we Danell Lane Hialeah average over a hundred fish on Macksfishcamp.com deck. That doesn t mean hook 954.536.7400 ups and missed fish over one hundred fish we have to take off the hook. Mack s also accommodates family-friendly activities with its playground picnic tables barbecues fire pits and airboat tours. One thing is certain From the moment you enter the camp driving down that dirt road is like going through a time warp. Hopefully relics like these will withstand the test of time its pristine beauty is as wild as it is calming. WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 77 familyissues By Jennifer Altieri Hop Into Happiness Find your happiness egg by creating your ideal life Are you hunting for your life s purpose What are the chances you are going to find it in an egg I would say slim to none. Yet very often we run around like kids at an egg hunt trying to find what will bring us happiness. You know how it works. Kids run to find and collect as many eggs as they can get before someone else can get them. The prize inside the egg is always a surprise waiting to be discovered. As adults looking for more joy in life we can sometimes end up randomly grabbing eggs hoping the prize inside will be the fulfillment we are searching for. Feeling a sense of urgency to get it before someone else snatches up our life s purpose. If you re having a hard time finding your happiness egg and feel like someone else has it in their basket I have good news for you. No one can take your fulfilling life from you. Today I m going to share with you a sneak peak of what I teach people when they take the passion test. You will be on your way to living your life s purpose no egg hunting required. Three elements necessary to create anything you choose to have in life. Intention Attention and No Tension. Intention consciously clearly stating what you choose to create. Attention what you put your attention on grows stronger in your life. No Tension act from a state of calmness and remain open. And remain open to happiness looking different than you thought it would when you placed that egg in your basket. Secret to a passionate life. Whenever you are faced with a decision a choice or an opportunity choose in favor of your passion. How many times a day are you faced with a decision Now you can ask yourself will this bring me closer to or farther away from my passion Prerequisite to living a passionate life. Commitment and persistence. Nothing will happen for you until you have committed to your passions. Make the commitment to yourself and your passions and you will soon find yourself living your life s purpose. We all affect each other. If you are living a joyful life your kids feel it your significant other feels it and everyone around you feels it too. When you live a life of fulfillment it inspires others to do the same. This Easter season leave the egg hunting to the Easter Bunny and the children and begin consciously creating your ideal life. Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery he has been named a Top Doctor in Castle Connolly s national ratings for 2011 2012 and 2013. 954.752.1020. www. drlevens.com he American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) the world s leading organization devoted entirely to aesthetic plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine of the face and body compiles statistics each year from its members to measure trends in plastic surgery. The statistics are released in late February and interesting tidbits are always gleaned. One trend for 2013 falls below the belt. There has been an increase in popularity of both buttock augmentation ( lift ) procedures and labiaplasty surgery. Overall there was a 6.5% increase in aesthetic surgical procedures from 2012 to 2013 but for labiaplasty the increase was 44% and for buttock augmentation it was 58% While these two procedures certainly do not make up the majority of the average plastic surgery practice the trend is notable. The total numbers of these procedures remains far less than the most common procedures such as breast augmentation liposuction and eyelid surgery. One trend for 2013 falls below the belt. The number of plastic surgeons performing labiaplasty increased from 21% to 29% last year alone. While core training in plastic and reconstructive surgery involves the entire body including the genitourinary region most common vaginal procedures including labiaplasty and various other vaginal rejuvenation procedures are commonly performed within the specialties of gynecology and urogynecology. Interested patients should do their homework to find a qualified physician for help just as with any medical condition. The number of physicians performing buttock enhancement a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift has increased from 19% to 30% last year. The procedure most commonly involves carefully reshaping the lower back hip thigh and buttock regions through liposuction ( liposculpting ) and transfer of a portion of the removed fat to select areas to enhance the roundness shape and size of the buttocks. While this is a surgical procedure with standard risks and consequences typically no actual lifting is involved. The effect of reshaping the buttocks through fat repositioning creates the illusion of a lift without any actual cutting or lifting as with face or breast lifting surgeries. According to Miami ASAPS member Constantino Mendieta MD who specializes in buttock augmentation ... .the increasing trend can definitely be attributed to more women wanting to emulate the look of Kim Kardashian s and Jennifer Lopez s shapely buttocks based on what [I] hear in [my] offices on a near-daily basis... Stay tuned for more information from the latest ASAPS statistics as the full report which will not be available until March 2014 (after press time). 90 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 permanent makeup eyeliner lip liner eyebrows Clients that decide permanent makeup is the right choice for them start off with a consultation with our Permanet Makeup Expert. U nderstanding teenagers is not easy however it is not something that is impossible. With the right tips and patience and remembering the fact that you too were once a teenager once upon a time you will find it much easier understanding your teenager. of being on the giving end for once. Most teenagers love showing off their knowledge and love sharing what they know. door policy pOpenkeep an open door policy with Learn to your teenager. While many adults think that teenagers don t have that much experience to contribute to important decisions this is not true. By discussing problems with them you open an important door to understand what goes on in their hearts and minds. the door pDon t slamthem without reasons. Stop condemning Don t slam the door and condemn everything your teenager does and says as if they don t think like adults. What seems obvious to them may elude you. So instead of losing your cool find out what their thoughts were behind their actions. You will be surprised with their answers and logic. for clarifications pAsk pretend you know everything and Never always be ready to ask for clarifications where required. Ask your teenager about something they are more knowledgeable about than you you make them proud Set pandguidelines consequences Teenagers tend to push till you go out of your mind this is a part of growing up and it is the way you handle these situations that determines how well you handle your teenagers. Set clear guidelines on what is acceptable and what isn t. Explain the consequences for different actions and then give them the key to their own lock. As long as they know their rules and consequences and if they choose to mess things up by behaving like inappropriately then they will have to learn from their mistakes. Though this may seem scary it is important you let teenagers learn from their mistakes. In a nutshell you have to listen and have an open mind to understand teenagers. Let them make their own mistakes and make them pay for their trespasses. Once you respect them and get respect in return you pass a major hurdle in understanding teenagers. 92 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2014 954.540.1161 Pool Service Receive 3rd Month (new customers only must present ad) Weekly pool service Up to 20% Discount on your current monthly payment. Reinfeld Esq. Reinfeld & Cabrera P.A. 10235 W. Sample Rd. Suite 207 Coral Springs 1.855.LAWS.123 (What Who Why Where and When) ince my last article people have been calling my office and inquiring on what a trust is and its potential benefits. As a result I have decided to focus this month s article on answering what I like to call the 5 W s of a trust. 1) What a trust is a legal document that transfers property during or after a person s lifetime for the benefit of someone. The two most common types of trusts are A Revocable and an Irrevocable Trust. A revocable trust can be changed or altered at any time by the creator or creators of the trust during his or her lifetime. In most circumstances an irrevocable trust cannot be altered or changed. S 2) Who a trust can be made out for the benefit of any person that you may want including young children your spouse a friend or your parents. 3) Why a trust can automatically transfer property without the use of a will or the need to go to court. Additionally the use of a trust is usually faster than that of a normal will in transferring property and title as well as it helps avoid the lengthy process of probate in courts. A trust also has the following benefits it secures your property for the benefit of your beneficiaries it protects the property from claims from creditors while in the trust and it also ensures your privacy (as a trust does not become a public record like a will does). Some trusts may even better your tax status if you fall above the taxable exemption. 4) Where a trust can dispose of property anywhere so long as the local law of where the property is located is followed and the property is properly titled in the name of the trust. 5) When a trust can be created today with the help of our attorneys. A trust is a very important document for the preservation of your property in the event of death or incapacitation. There are many factors to consider in creating a trust document and only a licensed attorney can walk you through the fine details of both the creation and the proper funding of a trust. The attorneys at Reinfeld & Cabrera P.A. have experience in creating trusts and can formulate a trust to meet all your needs. Shutowick Wise Decisions with Retirement in Mind ome retirees succeed at realizing the life they want others don t. Fate aside it isn t merely a matter of stock market performance or investment selection that makes the difference. There are certain dos and don ts some less apparent than others that tend to encourage retirement happiness and comfort. Retire financially literate. Some retirees don t know how much they don t know. They end their careers with inadequate financial knowledge and yet feel that they can plan retirement on their own. They mistake retirement income planning for the whole of retirement planning and gloss over longevity risk risks to their estate and potential health care expenses. The more you know the more your retirement readiness improves. Retire knowing that you ll have to assume some risk. Growth investing is increasingly seen as a necessity for retirees Certain financial & lifestyle choices may lead you toward a better future Parkland resident Michael C. According to data and research compiled by the Social Security Administration the average 65-yearold man will live to be 84 and the average 65-yearold woman will live to be 86. So that s a 20-year retirement. The SSA also notes that roughly a quarter of today s 65-year-olds will live past 90 and about 10% of them will live beyond age 95. If these seniors rely on fixed-income investments for the balance of their lives they may end up with reduced retirement income potential and in turn a reduced standard of living. Look at the Rule of 72 if an investment is yielding 2% it will take about 36 years to double your money. Yes interest rates are rising but inflation should rise with them. A generation ago mature Americans were urged to gradually shift their portfolio assets out of stocks and into fixed-income investments. One old rule of thumb was to subtract your age from 100 with the resulting number being the percentage of your portfolio you should assign to equities. Today retirees and retirement planners are reconsidering this thinking. As the Wall Street Journal reported recently one study of retirement money and longevity risk concluded that retirement funds may last longer if a retiree gradually increases the stock allocation within a portfolio about 1% per year from an initial range of between 20-50% to between 40-80%. The concept here is that a retiree s stock allocation should be lowest when their retirement nest egg is largest. Retire in a community where you feel at home. It could be where you live now it could be a place hundreds or thousands of miles away where the scenery and people are uplifting. It could be the place where your children live. If you find yourself lonely in retirement then find your tribe look for ways to connect with people who share your experiences interests and passions and who encourage you and welcome you. This social interaction is one of the great intangible retirement benefits.
