A plain tee or simple dress can be transformed into a spunky girls night ensemble with the addition of a large statement earring. Unfortunately these fabulous fashion statements are not always user friendly. They tend to be heavy and uncomfortable. After many years of wearing these heavy earrings they can cause the earlobes to sag and become droopy by stretching out the piercing. Instead of going through a costly earlobe reconstruction surgery or just not wearing earrings at all Robin Levinson co-owner of Levinson Jewelers has come up with a costeffective and less invasive solution to the problem. After 30 years of experience in the luxury jewelry retail industry she has designed a special backing to correct the problem. Levears Earring Lifts is an earring backing that can be worn on the back of any pair of earrings with a post. The backing works by leveraging the part of your ear above the pierced hole to spread the weight of the earrings over a larger area. This prevents the sagging and drooping of the earrings. Not only do these fashion-friendly backings support the earring but they also support the earlobe and prevent the earlobes from the damage of wearing heavy earrings. Levears Earrings Lifts are built to last and made by one of the leading jewelry manufacturers in the world. Get your pair at Levinson Jewelers 888 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale. She has three distinctly different lines FREEDOM Floral and L.O.V.E. FREEDOM is her bohemian gypsy-inspired line which is reminiscent of the 60 s and 70 s. Floral is an ode to the 50 s pinup era and L.O.V.E. is all about old Hollywood mainly the 20 s 30 s and 40 s. Also every year Jill releases a holiday collection. This year it s called Motown Starlet and it s all about being fearlessly confident. Jill says the spirit of the collection is about a woman who loves hard fights for what she believes in and knows how to ROCK some red lips and high heels. During the holidays Jill always reverts back to Old Hollywood because it s a time of year to get dressed up feel glamorous and celebrate with the ones you love. Shop the look at www.jillzaleski.com. WRAPPED IN BEAUTY There are a lot of reasons why DVF the woman is so special. The magnitude of Diane von F rstenberg s individuality and what makes her so appealing is perhaps best explained in her new book The Woman I Wanted To Be a candid and heartfelt memoir about her relationship with her mother (who was a survivor of Auschwitz) her many lovers and her incredible rise to fame as a fashion designer. I sat down with Diane recently at her popup store in the Aventura Mall a beautiful space partially dedicated to her Los Angeles exhibit Journey of a Dress celebrating the 40th anniversary of her famous wrap dress. We talked about her new book her new reality show and in short just what an astonishing year it s been for her. Shop the look at www.dvf.com. American Heritage School of Boca Delray embodies three pillars Knowledge Integrity and Compassion. While students gain knowledge and integrity in the classroom and on campus compassion is practiced in powerful ways through community service. In the words of our Headmaster Mr. Robert Stone We instill the philosophy through our community service programs in elementary middle and high school that it is every person s responsibility to help those in need and to strive everyday to make our world a better place. Through a multitude of leadership and community service opportunities starting with the very youngest children our students accomplish truly great things. At American Heritage community service is an integral part of student life. Students play an active role in changing our world through clubs and organizations that fit their wide range of interests if students want to create a club that does not exist they are encouraged to take the initiative to create it themselves. American Heritage fosters leadership and creativity and provides students with the resources to help make a difference in the lives of people throughout the world. For the past five years our school has partnered with the organization Transforming Kids on a campaign called Education Rocks in which students sponsor impoverished children in Bali Indonesia. Heritage students each raise 365 in cash throughout the course of a school year (without the help of their parents ) to help pay for a child to go to school. AHS senior Calie Michael said It s a great experience to be able to connect with a child so far away. I am proud to help a child get the kind of education that we sometimes take for granted. Our Pre-Med Society for students in grades 9-12 joins forces with Broward Health Medical Center every year and hosts a festive Holiday Party that gives 39 pediatric oncology patients the joy of Christmas that they would not otherwise have the chance to experience. Samantha Torres an AHS senior and President of the Pre-Med Society said I am so proud to be a part of such an amazing and humbling experience The opportunity to participate in projects like this one has truly touched me and I hope to always be a part of it. Heritage students learn valuable lessons that go beyond the classroom they are becoming leaders at such a young age and improving the lives of their peers in need throughout the community and all around the world. 30 FEBRUARY 2015 LMGFL.COM TICKETS ON SALE NOW SOBEFEST.COM 877.762.3933 OFFICIAL CARD FEBRUARY 19-22 2015 FEATURING ANNE BURRELL BOBBY FLAY GIADA DE LAURENTIIS ALEX GUARNASCHELLI ROBERT IRVINE MASAHARU MORIMOTO RACHAEL RAY AAR N S NCHEZ TRISHA YEARWOOD GEOFFREY ZAKARIAN ANDREW ZIMMERN & MANY MORE TITLE PRESENTING BENEFITING HOSTED BY HOST HOTEL PREMIER OFFICIAL AIRLINE PLATINUM DIAMOND SPECIAL THANKS Confirmed sponsors as of September 2014 LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2015 31 BEAUTY AND yle BY LEAH MOSKOWITZ 1 32 Well we ve finally cleaned up the last of the confetti from the NYE party and we may or may not still be sticking to our resolutions February is here the month of love as well as my birthday Here are some items that I m already loving. st 2 Lifestyle s Beauty Columnist and Blogger Leah Moskowitz of Live Love Lipstick is devoted to bringing you what s new and hot. AS THE STAR AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF BRAVO S HIT DOCU-SERIES THE MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER THIS BEST-SELLING AUTHOR IS EMBARKING ON HER EIGHTH SUCCESSFUL SEASON. SHE HAS GAINED RECORDBREAKING VIEWERSHIP AND HAS CAPTURED A WORLDWIDE FOLLOWING. THIS YEAR SHE WILL BE MATCHING 150 CELEBRITIES WITH MANY SUCCESSFUL MATCHES AND SAYS THE HOLLYWOOD COMMUNITY HAS BEEN VERY GOOD TO HER. AT 5 8 THIS STATUESQUE BLUE-EYED BRUNETTE IS KNOWN FOR BEING EXTREMELY BLUNT AND BIG HEARTED. 36 FEBRUARY 2015 LMGFL.COM GROWING UP Growing up in New Jersey Stanger graduated from the University of Miami and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. This Hurricane had always dreamed of being a screenwriter and may in fact see her dreams come true when How To Become a Matchmaker is made into a movie. Despite the fact that she now lives in Los Angeles she says I still consider South Florida home. I spent my summers with my grandmother at the Diplomat Towers in Hollywood and some of my greatest memories are dancing on the tables at Mezzanote Restaurant in Boca enjoying the beach and the Fort Lauderdale vibe. Stanger believes that the lovers are better in Florida because of the tropical weather and the sensuous mixture of cultures including Latinos and Israelis. Stanger s adoptive mother Rhoda and stepfather Mel Goldstein lived in Sunny Isles Beach and Stanger proudly states that she is an experienced third-generation matchmaker. My mom was the first divorce in our community and my grandmother coached her and helped arrange her second marriage they didn t do this as a business only for friends and family. Stanger attributes much of her attitude about men to her mother. She had three husbands but always had the confidence that there would be 10 more men in minutes coming around the corner. When Stanger talks about her upbringing she says that her adoptive family all looked like blonde supermodels she never felt like she fit in and attributes her not finding a man to her abandonment issues. I ve spent a lot of time searching for my biological parents. My sister met her biological parents and then almost immediately met her husband. She pauses I never felt confident. I thought if I could get in the minds of men I d be ahead of the curve but once I got in their heads I was turned off because there was no mystery. She is forthright about her rough childhood. My second father was an alcoholic who lost all his money. I knew then that I would never be dependent on a man. I was always good at making matches for others but not myself she says. I had a nurturing quality that attracted a lot of slackers that I tried to rescue. I sucked at love. At 53 Stanger says she has been in a fouryear relationship with boyfriend David Krause a baseball player turned mortgage broker whom she met online. Stanger who was vocal about wanting children says I have enjoyed his kids and I feel I m too old too adopt. THE STARS ALIGN It was Stanger s mother who saw an ad in the Sun Sentinel that eventually led Patti on the matchmaker career path. There were thousands of blondes applying for the position at Great Expectations one of the oldest dating services in the US (who now has 50 clubs nationally). The owner asked what I was doing there and I said I m your girl. So he took me to an event and I made the most contacts and got the most leads and I won the job. Patti went on to serve as the Director of Marketing for Great Expectations in Aventura for five years. It was at that time that she met longtime friend Amy Ballon who has worked in transitional real estate sales and development in South Florida since 1995. Ballon is FROM THE INITIAL MEETING THROUGH TO THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL THE MILLIONAIRE S CLUB WORKS WITH CLIENTS AND ABOUT 30 TO 40 POTENTIAL DATES. THEY FIRST MEET AT A COCKTAIL PARTY STANGER HOSTS CALLED A VIP MIXER. FROM THERE COUPLES GO ON SOME MINI DATES WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A MASTER DATE. STANGER USES COUNSELORS PSYCHOLOGISTS AND PERSONAL TRAINERS THROUGH EACH STAGE OF THE DATING PROCESS TO PROVIDE THEM WITH TAILORED FEEDBACK AT EVERY STEP. LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2015 37 also a partner in the Hemisphere Sales Group which represents Sabbia Beach Pompano Beach s first Oceanside in nearly a decade. Sabbia Beach will also be the site of South Florida Lifestyle Magazine s VIP Singles Event hosted by Stanger this April. Patti and I have been friends for over 20 years. She is very spiritual and the most loyal friend. We ve spent holidays together and she would make our Passover dinners. When I was a divorced single mom with two kids she took me under her wing and introduced me around. Ballan says that Stanger is a renaissance woman who has always been driven captivating and engaging but most importantly authentic. I was engaged to be married and we all went to Chef Allen s for dinner. I had 6.5-carat diamond and my then-fianc kept pointing it out. Patti said to him if you like the ring so much why don t you wear the ing ring. I ultimately didn t marry that guy. IT S A CALLING After working at Great Expectations my mother felt like there was more opportunity for me in L.A. I went west looking for gold she says. Stanger had gone to California to work in the entertainment industry I thought that I would be working at Paramount but Arthur Cohen a well-known producer said I was too smart to work there and that he suggested that I continue with matchmaking. Stanger says that it was her credit card debt that forced her to reconsider her options when she relocated to L.A. I didn t even have a bedroom door on my room and was working as a practicing psychic she says. Reality TV hadn t hit yet and Cohen sat down with me and helped me with my business plan. I was terrified to start this business as I only had a few Florida clients. So I bought a small advertisement in an L.A. magazine and started a website. Stanger founded her company love the Millionaire s Club in California in 1999 which has gone on to become an empire. I never dreamed this could be a full-time job. I thought I d get married to a producer have two kids and write screenplays. Her Millionaires Club now has thousands of global members with South Florida being her second biggest market followed by New York. We are getting more women from Florida than any other market in the country including California. It s the fastest market to fix people up in. They don t hem and haw. They go out on a date and they don t analyze. Currently Stanger has more than 100 000 women available for its members (women join free) while membership for most men ranges from 45 000 to 150 000 per year depending on which dating package is selected. BIG HEART Stanger is known for her big heart and maintains that in order to be good at this work you need a number of attributes. You had better be answering to a higher power and understand that it s hard work to find love. Stanger now has a Matchmakers Institute in NYC and an academy that trains people in this field and maintains that it s a billion-dollar-ayear business that continues to grow as divorce rates go up. Despite the fact that she says that most of what she does is intuitive and it s hard to quantify she teaches people to get out of their own way. When asked about the number of 38 FEBRUARY 2015 LMGFL.COM successful matches she s made she replies that A Rabbi from a Temple in Bal Harbour has a rule that it s not good luck to count the number of matches you arrange because you don t want your ego involved. Stanger says that she is spiritual not religious and reads Tarot and uses crystal pendulums. Most people only know one side of Patti but she has also had a long relationship and love of food and wine. Enjoying life and friends is part of my everyday life and working in the wine industry seemed natural. Similar to what I do on television wine brings people together. Now through the introduction of her new wine P.S. Match which ranges in price from 9.99 - 13.99 Stanger laughs You don t need to spend a lot of money to drink like a millionaire. As Stanger continues to build her empire she says making matches is not a job for her but a calling that comes from up above. I ll be doing this when I m in my 90s she says. With a twinkle in her eye she talks excitedly about the launch of her new websites books and jewelry lines and believes that her journey has been a match made in heaven. 6uru A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN AT SABBIA BEACH PATTI S COMING TO TOWN Lifestyle Magazine will celebrate in style with some of South Florida s most eligible singles at an exclusive VIP event hosted by Sabbia Beach Pompano Beach s first Oceanside condominium in nearly a decade. The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center (HDEC) is a special center founded with two unique and critical missions. One is to document and present an enduring historically accurate record of the Holocaust through eyewitness accounts by survivors liberators rescuers and others. The other mission is to teach people from all walks of life the universal lessons of the Holocaust through thought-providing exhibitions and insightful programming. Both of these missions are powerfully addressed through Student Awareness Days. At the end of 2014 the HDEC hosted Student Awareness Day in Broward where more than 850 high school students met at the Broward Convention Center. On this occasion the students learned the dangers of racism straight from the source among the featured speakers were Holocaust survivors and Angela King a former skinhead from Broward County. As a lifelong resident of Broward County I have seen our community evolve over time. While so much has improved schools arts and culture population diversity we still battle prejudice even well into the 21st Century. This event connected students with survivors in order to battle prejudice and bigotry through education with round-table discussions lectures and video presentations. It has been my pleasure and my honor to work with Rositta Kenigsberg the President of the HDEC whose passion is to open the doors to the museum this calendar year so that everyone understands better what happened during the Holocaust and how it relates to life today. Rositta explained that survivors want the world to learn about the Holocaust because they have witnessed what prejudice hatred and bigotry can do. She reports that the number of hate groups and hate crimes and the rash of bullying and cyber-bullying are at an all-time high. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center hate crimes have jumped 813 percent in recent years. The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center is making every effort to keep the Holocaust top of mind so that the phrase Never Again is meaningful. The HDEC hosts Student Awareness Day annually in Broward Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties. The next one is February 24 in Miami-Dade and March 26 in Palm Beach. The past should never be dormant. It is how we can make life better for the future. When the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center opens the doors to its 26 000-square-foot museum at 303 N. Federal Highway in Dania Beach the realities of that era will be memorialized right here in South Florida so that we will never forget. For more information contact Rositta Kenigsberg at 954929-5690 ext. 201 or by email at Rositta hdec.org. LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2015 71 DINING POLLO MANGO MOLE CLASSIC MEXICAN WITH A BIT OF STYLE By Richard Shellene AD The Village at Gulfstream Park 501 Silks Run 1120 Hallandale Beach 954.457.7662 The lighted walkways and shops of The Village at Gulfstream Park accompanied by the lively sound of people and music is typical of most nights. Good food and drink is also a big attraction for the Hallandale area. Among the string of bars and bistros stands a restaurant that has been a neighborhood favorite and with good reason Cantina Laredo. Cantina Laredo along with III Forks (in both Gulfstream Park and Palm Beach Gardens) is one of the many restaurants owned and operated by Consolidated Restaurant Operations. This establishment sits in a prime location for people watching with its outdoor dining. The fast and friendly service has just the right amount of attentiveness to make you feel special without smothering you. Even during the week when a lot of eateries taper off Cantina Laredo is always busy day or night. We started the evening with an order from the bar. Made with tequila ginger liqueur soaked with pineapple for 24 hours and fresh juice makes the Pineapple Infused Rita an intoxicating delight to imbibe. Whether your tastes run mild or hot Laredo has an array of salsas and complimentary chips. My companion for the evening commented with excitement I could just eat these all night Starting light we dined on a small plate of Tacos de Hongos. The grilled Portobello mushroom tacos have a deep and rich taste that is enhanced by goat cheese cilantro and a balsamic glaze. We also tried a sampling of the Torta de Costillas a griddle baked sandwich made with a slow-roasted short rib and topped with an apple-jicama slaw jalapenos and black beans. This succulent sandwich is more than enough to fill your appetite. The main courses are a menu of classics taken to the next level with quality ingredients and done with new twists. The Pollo Mango Mole turns the standard roasted chicken into a culinary surprise with a mango sauce toasted pine nuts and avocado with a side of cilantro rice. Paired with sweet mango mule from the cocktail menu this sweet and smoky meal was enticing till the last bite. The Costillas Con Fajita puts the carne in carnivore with a pull-off the bones meat basted in Jose Cuervo Tequila barbecue sauce. The food is so filling that we never made it to dessert. This unique take on Mexican standards leaves the senses reeling. With the friendly and fast service yet never feeling rushed Cantina Laredo is a must for Mexican cuisine. 72 FEBRUARY 2015 LMGFL.COM LMGFL COM FEBRUARY 2 015 LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2015 MGFL.COM FL.C L CO EBRUAR R R 01 01 5 73 73 Powered by Touchscreen open air PhotoBooth Write messages on the screen Email Facebook and Tweet your photos INSTANTLY Great for events branding private and social functions Lifestyle MEDIA GROUP Proud Partner of 74 FEBRUARY 2015 LMGFL.COM European imported Hunters Jumpers Equitation horses and ponies for sale and lea pean Equitation it t itati lease South Florida s Premier Equestrian Training and Boarding Farm 6670 NW 82nd Terrace Parkland Florida 33067 954.757.1119 www.PineHollowFlorida.com LMGFL.COM FEBRUARY 2015 75 scene on site 13th Annual KID Inlet Challenge Chad Tamaroff Frank Utset Tom Coyle and Richard Schuller The riders of the 13th Annual Inlet Challenge for Kids in Distress (KID) enjoyed a beautiful day in South Florida and helped raise more than 100 000 for children and families.
