Parkland News W PARKLAND MAYOR MICHAEL UDINE elcome to Spring It s a great time of year in the Parkland. Additionally thank you to our great city employees for everything they do. They make our jobs as elected officials much easier. They make us look good Things are really going well in Parkland. I also must mention the great things that are happening at our local area schools. Each one is excelling on so many levels. At Stoneman Douglas their sports teams are doing wonderful things on the field and courts. The Douglas Basketball team just finished an electrifying season that saw them just a few minutes away from making the State Tournament. The school spirit shown at the games were fantastic with some excellent athletic achievement. Not to be out done the Drama Department again did a great performance that was enjoyed by many in the Community. Finally DECA made their way to States again with great success. This time of year brings us to our strategic planning sessions. We do this each year to set budget and policy priorities. Each year we use the time to update out priorities and work flow. We appreciate all the public input and ideas we gather throughout the year. We use the city survey responses and the public s input to come up with plans and ideas. We try to make the difficult decisions and balance the wants and needs of the city as we formulate budgets and policy initiative well into the future. While we are happy and gratified that a large percentage of our residents are extremely satisfied with the city services we are constantly looking to improve in all areas. These strategic planning sessions over the years have led to improvements and events that continue to make Parkland great. Thank you to the entire City Commission staff and all the volunteers who help make the strategic planning process a success. As always I value your questions or comments. Reach out and friend me if you want to follow me on Facebook or look me up on Twitter (www.twitter.com michaeludine) if you want to follow my updates. His leadership and experience earned him the support of Broward County residents and in January 2013 he became the 16th elected sheriff of Broward County. He can be reached at ask_the_sheriff sheriff.org. Dogs on Patrol Council who was donated to the agency by the Broward Sheriff s Advisory Council in December helps BSO s Depart. of Detention take a proactive approach to cell phone smuggling in the jails. Council is equipped to sniff out seven contraband scents including cigarettes and unauthorized cell phones. Outside of the federal prison system it is extremely rare for a law enforcement agency to have access to a canine such as Council. In fact BSO is the only sheriff s office in Florida to have a dog exclusively assigned to the jails. The risk the smuggled phones could facilitate new crimes or intimidate witnesses who are scheduled to testify in court against defendants. By taking a proactive approach we eliminate the possibility of these concerns becoming a countywide problem. The BSO Canine Unit has more than earned its place in law enforcement. That is why when it is time for a dog to retire we honor each canine s illustrious career by encouraging the bond between dog and handler to continue. As a reward for their loyalty and service retired canines typically live out the rest of their lives in their handlers homes under their human companions care. All of BSO s past and present BSO canines are recognized and honored on a special commemorative wall in our main headquarters. To learn more about our Canine Unit s approach to public safety all residents can attend one of the team s many public demonstrations at local schools festivals and countywide events. I invite residents to meet one of our dogs on patrol our bloodhound Macie as she helps host our annual BSO Cooper City Chip-a-Pet event. We will provide free microchips to dogs and cats on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the BSO Cooper City District Office. If you re a Cooper City resident interested in chipping your pet please call 954.432.9000 ext. 249 to register. PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 ogs and people have been working side by side for thousands of years. Since the early 1980s the Broward Sheriff s Office Canine Unit (or K-9) has assisted in serving and protecting residents and visitors countywide. Specially-trained canines are invaluable to our deputies when tracking criminals finding illegal materials retrieving evidence and searching for missing people. Today BSO has a total of 49 dogs assigned throughout the agency. The Canine Unit is available 24 hours a day for immediate response. There are dogs assigned to our patrol unit to the airport to assist the TSA to our Bomb Unit and to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue (BSFR). BSO relies on canine counterparts because a dog s sense of smell is almost 50 times more sensitive than a human s and can discern a specific scent even when there are dozens of other scents around. Every dog in the BSO canine team attends a mandatory academy for 8 to 12 weeks of specialized training. After completion weekly training is conducted as well as annual recertification through nationally-recognized organizations to ensure all members of the team are at peak performance. Two of the most recent canines to join the team are Dig and Council. Approximately one year ago Dig became the first and only BSFR dog. He is the newest member of FEMA s Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force II. This is an elite force of search and rescue dogs because of the harsh conditions of disaster environments and the agility needed to access search and rescue areas. Dig is trained to find live victims of collapsed buildings vehicle accidents with ejections as well as passengers thrown from train and plane accidents. His training is also invaluable in open area searches for a missing adult or child. Dig is certified for the entire state of Florida and as of March he received his national certification FEMA CE the highest level a search and rescue dog can achieve. 16 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 17 18 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 T H E 1 0 4 F E V E R A T 3 A . Get Your Prom On PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 37 feature NAKED AMBITION To be on trend you need to find the right gown--a mission that prom girls pursue zealously. I do bridal too and I can tell you that these girls take their dresses just as seriously as brides take theirs says Zola Keller owner of Zola Keller in Fort Lauderdale for more than 30 years where prom dresses cost from 400 to upwards of 4 000 for beaded couture. Some start looking for a dress one year in advance and go to every store they can. What styles are they buying As homage to Katy Perry Jennifer Lopez and other Hollywood starlets naked dresses are all the rage according Keller. That is dresses made with nude-colored fabric often bedecked with intricately patterned beads located in um strategic places. They want as little coverage as possible Keller says. And the mothers come in with them and roll their eyes and say Oh My God. They want dresses that are form fitting too to accentuate their figures. It s all about the back and the booty Keller says. The back as low-cut as it can be and as tight around the booty as it can be. Aida Ebert who s worked in the wedding industry for 15 years and owns SaRose Bridal in Coral Springs also has seen demand for gowns with cutouts and or halters which she says are really hot this year. And for girls who want color she s been selling a lot of navy cranberry Champagne and jewel tones. For plus-sized girls flowing chiffon is the way to go. Perhaps they re a bit larger and don t want such a form-fitting dress says Ebert who on April 10 will participate in a fashion show fundraiser at Coral Springs Charter School. But you don t have to be larger to wear chiffon. The dresses are still beautiful. As important as it is for prom girls to find the perfect gown it s equally crucial to ensure that no else has that same gown. The new thing is that girls post pictures of their dresses on Facebook so everyone can see what they bought--and so no one will copy it Keller explains. Taking that a step further Ebert tracks the prom dresses she sells to each high school to avoid duplication. One client recently was very happy about that she says because the last thing any girl wants is to walk in and see someone wearing the same dress. He noticed that his grandfather with whom he was very close never ate a healthy diet. Sadly he passed away from both heart disease and cancer. This greatly impacted Milner. Chef Jeff realized his passion for helping others understand the meaning of health and wellness. He worked at both the University of Miami s Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital Chelsea Health Care Center. He introduced and participated in a six-week cooking and nutrition course for patients struggling with obesity and diabetes. The impact of that course led him to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts with a concentration on nutrition at Johnson and Wales University in North Miami. After an internship at Hilton Head Health a weight loss treatment program Jeff worked with Flipany a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children and adults learn the importance of nutrition and activity. He lead Share Our Strength s Cooking Matters program with great pride and dedication serving over 500 individuals struggling with food insecurity and hunger. For more information on Parkland Buddy Sports you can visit the Facebook Page Parkland Buddy Sports Inc. or www.parklandbuddysports.com E very week Dylan and his Grandfather drive to Parkland Buddy Sports where Dylan practices kicking the ball with his buddy. One afternoon on the way to one of Dylan s soccer games Dylan said the word kick. For most children Dylan s age this word should be a regular part of their vocabulary but Dylan has never spoken before. He has a tumor which causes him to have seizures and speaking difficulties. The sound of the word kick coming out of his mouth was like music to his Grandfathers ears. Originating in 2002 what was once Soccer Buddies became Parkland Buddy Sports in 2009. The program allows children with special needs to play different sports that they normally would not get the chance to play. Children of all ages with special needs of any kind meet up once a week for an hour to enjoy the festivities of the day with their seasonal buddy. The program was started to give back and create awareness for children with special needs. Starting in Parkland this program has expanded to Palm Beach MiamiDade and the rest of Broward County. Special needs children buddies and volunteers come from all over South Florida to be a part of this profound organization. President of the Parkland Buddy Sports Bob Mayersohn says We started this so that people can look at kids with disabilities in a different way. Today Parkland Buddy Sports has expanded from just offering one sport to offering many sports. Tennis running kickball basketball soccer and several other sports can now be played. The environment is free of social physical and cultural constraints leaving no limits for team effort and dedication. Mayersohn said It s interesting how the neurotypical kids or the buddies get more out of it than the players. Those who come out young and old all leave a winner with a feeling of achievement and selflessness. When buddies are helping motivate and push the players to overcome their fears in return their raising awareness and sensitivity within themselves and the community. Reciprocity is inevitable at Parkland Buddy Sports. This year the buddies are having their 3rd annual golf fundraiser tournament which will be held on Friday May 1 2015 at Boca Lago Country 44 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 PARKLAND CORAL SPRINGS LIFE APRIL 2015 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM 45 non-profit profile Noreen Salah Burpee Executive Director of The Salah Foundation he Salah Foundation is a private foundation that supports non-profit organizations in the United States that strengthen families and communities with a special interest in education medical research and community development. The grant process is strictly by invitation. It always seeks out organizations that strive to improve life by breaking the cycle whether it is through education human welfare or public health. The foundation makes impactful investments in organizations that share its beliefs. As Executive Director Noreen Salah Burpee works diligently with her Family Board Members to chart a course for change. We took a few moments to interview Burpee. Explain what it means to be this year s Outstanding Foundation Honoree from the Broward County Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals We are not a check-writing organization. We like to incentivize others to give and to take part in improving the lives of those in the community. That is why for example we are currently working with the Broward Health Foundation on It s All About KIDS A Special Campaign for Broward Health a 10 million dollar-for-dollar matching grant where The Salah Foundation will match every dollar given until an additional 10 million is reached. We want to help Broward Health renovate and expand their children s hospital but we also want the community to get involved. It is all about the power of one gift and the fact that every gift counts regardless of size. We are committed to that philosophy as is the Broward Health Foundation. What does this honor mean to you I am honored and humbled to have received the award. I view it as confirmation that we as a Foundation are fulfilling our mission statement and changing the landscape of our community one grant at a time. In 2013 I was a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of honor for my philanthropy. I am very proud of both of these awards. What gets you up everyday As Americans we have a history of giving people a hand when they need it and of paying it forward. We invest in the future of our country by striving to improve the lives of others. Every morning I awake with the realization that I will be the element of positive change in the lives of others. What makes you smile The love of my family and friends always brings a smile to my face. The reality that today will be a better day because I will be the rainbow in someone s storm makes me smile. I am that little girl who did volunteer work. I am the mother who taught my children values and encouraged them to volunteer. I will be that grandmother who will encourage my grandchildren to give back in some capacity. On a personal note I have 6 grandchildren under the age of 11. Now that makes me smile. You need at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight on a daily basis. This can be more closely adhered to if you follow these tactics for getting the most out of your protein intake. To gain muscle mass I ll add 20 grams for lean muscle gains minus 20 grams. Train correctly read your body do what works for you and without overtraining. According to the Institute of Medicine it s recommended that 10% to 35% of your daily calories come from protein. Below is the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for different age groups. According to the Institute of Medicine exactly how much protein you need to intake daily changes with age Babies need about 10 grams a day. School-age kids need 19-34 grams a day. Teenage boys need up to 52 grams a day. Teenage girls need 46 grams a day. Adult men need about 56 grams a day. Adult women need about 46 grams a day (71 grams if pregnant or breast feeding). EAT FIVE SIX MEALS PER DAY This important principle of nutrition will allow you to get in your desired amounts of nutrients. It s not crucial to have equal or specific amounts of protein and carbohydrates at each meal as long as you distribute the intake of your nutrients in a pattern that makes it as simple as possible for you. Smaller and more frequent meals will have a more beneficial effect. EAT (OR DRINK) A MEAL EVERY THREE HOURS Timing nutrient intake can also lead to greater and faster gains. The best time to schedule a high-protein meal is before during and or after a workout. Eating close to your workout time will help reduce protein breakdown enhance synthesis and storage of protein and glycogen in muscles and promote an anabolic hormonal environment. Before bedtime is another key time for protein intake. If you are really serious you may want to experiment to see if planned intake during the night works for you. RELY ON WHOLE FOODS AS A FOUNDATION Get plenty of uncooked and unprocessed fruits and vegetables into your diet. Solid foods are digested relatively slowly and they allow you to control the rates of nutrients released into the bloodstream. Solid foods also enable the gastrointestinal tract to more efficiently and effectively process increased calories particularly of protein. BUMP UP PROTEIN INTAKE WITH PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS Protein supplements will help you to get in the protein you need for the greatest possible anabolic response. Of course you will eat whole foods as often as you can but protein supplements allow you to overload protein intake easily. 48 WWW.LIFEPUBS.COM Stanford University s Advanced Math Program Is Offered to Gifted Elementary School Students Accelerated math students in grades 4 6 at American Heritage School are on a mathematical track not available in any other school in the state of Florida. Styled after the other brick colonial commercial buildings it displayed what they described as turned-on-living products. From self-cleaning ovens and no-frost freezers to electric fry pans and timer-activated coffee makers all were available on-site before there was a local hardware store. They were anxious to capture the appliance market that had previously been dominated by General Electric. Miniatures of model houses were also on display. With the biggest auditorium in town the many residents who assembled there to see movies City Commission meetings and other civic events had an opportunity to check out the products. It s also time for the annual release of annual statistics from two major plastic surgery organizations The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) that collectively represent the largest groups of plastic surgeons both in the US and internationally. Each year their members are surveyed to compile statistics that measure trends in plastic surgery. And the results for 2014 are particularly interesting. One trend for 2014 falls below the belt . There has been an increase in popularity of buttock augmentation ( lift ) surgery. Although the percentage increase has slowed from the 2013-2013 statistics there is clearly a strong continued interest in buttock enhancement. While there was only a small increase in all aesthetic surgical procedures from 2013 to 2014 for buttock augmentation the increase was 15 percent. Although this procedure is nowhere near the top of the list of the most common procedures for most plastic surgeons the trend is notable. The total number of these procedures (10 000) remains far less than the most common procedures such as breast augmentation (300 000) and liposuction (200 000). Buttock enhancement aka Brazilian Butt Lift most commonly involves carefully reshaping the lower back hip thigh and buttock regions through careful liposuction ( liposculpting ) and transfer of a portion of the removed fat to select areas to enhance the roundness shape and size of the buttocks. While this is a surgical procedure with standard risks and consequences typically no actual lifting is involved. The effect of reshaping the buttocks through fat repositioning creates the illusion of a lift and therefore no actual cutting and lifting is involved as with face of breast lifting surgeries. According to Miami ASAPS member Constantino Mendieta MD who specializes in buttock augmentation While a rounder more curvaceous derriere has been in vogue for a number of years celebrities like Nikki Minaj and Kim Kardashian have brought attention to the rear to an all-time high influencing more women to undergo buttock augmentation to achieve the hourglass look. The popularity of the buttock lift has also benefited by an increased focus on the science and practice of transferring fat to other areas especially to the face to help reduce the signs of facial aging as well as to the breasts for enhancement of both reconstructive and cosmetic patients. Unfortunately insurance companies and defense attorneys know the same tricks. It is important to remember that if your pictures tweets biographies and blogs are public then they can be seen by anyone. In a personal injury claim anything you post on the Internet can potentially come back to harm your case. The Fourth District recently considered whether a defendant had a right to examine the photos posted on the plaintiff s Facebook account. In Nucci v. Target Corporation the plaintiff allegedly slipped and fell on the defendant s premises. The defense moved to compel inspection of the Plaintiff s Facebook profile. The plaintiff objected but the trial court partially granted the defendant s motion ordering that the plaintiff identify all social and professional networking sites where she had an account. In addressing the Plaintiff s claimed right of privacy the district court noted that courts have to balance the need for discovery against an individual s privacy interests. If an expectation of privacy is established the requesting party must show that the need outweighs that privacy interest. The district court found that the photographs posted on the social networking site were not privileged or protected by a right of privacy no matter what privacy settings the user enabled. Since others may copy and disseminate the information posted on a social networking site the court found there was no reasonable expectation of privacy. As with everything in life you must be careful and responsible about how you use social media. Make sure your privacy settings are adjusted appropriately and try to be aware about what your friends and family are posting about you.
