But somehow during the rainy days of summer I became hooked on Bravo s hit show Below Deck which follows the hard work drama and adventures of a yachting crew that works on luxury charters. As someone who loves to travel and often dreams of taking off to sail the world the whole premise of the show (now in its third season) intrigues me. It turns out three of the show s main cast members Captain Lee Rosbach Kate Chastain and Amy Johnson live right here in Fort Lauderdale. We thought they would make a great cover story in boat-obsessed water-loving South Florida and we were right they are loads of fun with interesting stories to tell You ll find out what drew them into the yachtie lifestyle how they spend their time when they are back on dry land and what s next for these reality TV stars. I m sure you feel it in the air Season has started and the social calendar is cranking up. We re already thinking ahead to big events such as the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show which takes place at the beginning of November and the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. The foodie fun doesn t start until February 2016 but tickets go on sale this month. And here s the great news The festival is expanding to Fort Lauderdale with a whole new lineup of dinners and parties in the 954 (I m already dieting and practicing my swirl). We ve also highlighted the hottest Halloween haunts and standout cultural events so there is so much to do this month. I hope you have a fabulous kickoff to season The A-List Angela s top lusts and musts this month Don t have a boat Head over to Topeekeegee Yugnee Park in Hollywood and rent an old-school paddleboat. My personal favorite the giant swan. It makes for a relaxing ride on the lake and a great photo opportunity. I recently took my mother-in-law for a girls day and she loved it 3300 N. Park Road Hollywood 954.357.8811 I m already planning ahead for the holidays and the Bocabased homemade dessert company Baking Babe is on my radar. Baking goddess Keri Cohen creates delicious desserts and breads that most importantly are free of junky preservatives and can be vegan or gluten-free. Fan favorites include the sea salt dark chocolate banana bread and the Nutella cookies. And her gift crates and packaging are oh-so cute 718.496.1514 My husband and I often spend our weekends hunting for unique treasures for our home. On a recent antiquing trip to West Palm Beach we stumbled upon The Painted Ox. The owner finds pieces of furniture that have seen better days and reimagines them into pieces that are truly oneof-a-kind. We had some floor pillows redone and found a unique beverage cart. But newer technology that creates three-dimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13 000 women use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida s academic medical center in Weston as well as the West Palm Beach location. Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles to create a series that forms the 3D image says Maria Artze MD a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap and so improves the radiologist s ability to detect breast cancer. for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. In images of the breast dense tissue appears white and cancer appears white says Cassann Blake MD Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue this detail is important. For the patient during the screening the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast instead of staying stationary. southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms visits that can cause stress and expense plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of false positives where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight Dr. Blake says. Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you. For a surgical consultation with Dr. Cassann Blake or to schedule a mammography please call 855.324.8153 for more information. The Fort Lauderdale resident didn t break into yachting until he was 35 (which is late by most standards) and admits that at the beginning he battled a serious case of seasickness. During the first year of my career in yachting I was sick almost all the time Rosbach says. Yeah it was embarrassing. But he stuck it out got his captain s license and has been in the yachting industry ever since. While viewers see a tough guy at the helm who will easily hand a one-way plane ticket to an inept crew member in person Rosbach is fun laid-back and ready to crack a joke at any moment. Just don t call him by his first name (he goes by his middle name Lee). No one calls me Harold not if they want to keep their jobs he says. It doesn t fit me... I don t feel like I look like a Harold. Before he broke into yachting Rosbach managed a restaurant in the Turks and Caicos so it s no surprise he remains a foodie. He says he loves to whip up a nice Bolognese sauce or to throw some lobster and a thick rib-eye topped with melted Gorgonzola cheese on the grill. He and his wife of 40 years Mary Anne live in east Fort Lauderdale in the Croissant Park neighborhood and frequent restaurants such as Bistro Mezzaluna and Anthony s Runway 84. (The day of Lifestyle s photo shoot he was raving about the octopus at Thasos.) I used to love Chuck s Steakhouse he reminisces. They tore it down and put up a fast-food chicken joint. Chuck s was an institution. Back in the day if somebody wanted to get a job on a yacht they went in during cocktail hour at Chuck s. Rosbach has traveled a lot but he is looking forward to making more time to vacation with his wife to places such as the South Pacific Hawaii and Alaska. And although he works on the water he never tires of the ocean. It s mysterious. It s seductive he says. I guess you kind of liken it to sitting in front of a nice fireplace. It s just enticing... People are drawn to it. Rosbach has no plans to retire from yachting anytime soon and he hopes he ll be asked to return to Below Deck for a fourth season. The handsome captain says he has enjoyed every minute of being on the show including the fame he s gained from it. He ll even be one of the noted celebrities at the Winterfest Boat Parade in December. No one gives you a manual on how to deal with being recognized he admits. The first time it happens you re like What are you looking at It s fun. I don t mind when people want to take a picture with me... To put a smile on someone s face why wouldn t you do that CAPTAIN LEE ROSBACH O Captain My Captain 36 OCTOBER 2015 LMGFL.COM I f you bumped into Amy Johnson in Fort Lauderdale you d most likely experience the same bubbly down-to-earth young woman with a welcoming Southern twang that you see on TV. And she ll be the first to tell you that she landed in Florida and in yachting on a whim. Eight years ago the pretty brunette from Wichita Falls Texas was burnt out from selling Cadillacs in Dallas and desperately wanted a change. I came to Fort Lauderdale for a girls vacation and just fell in love with the area. I wanted travel and adventure... So I just picked up and moved here. After being a beach bum for a few months the then 20-something decided to apply for a yachting stewardess job she found on Craigslist. But since she didn t have any experience the captain of the yacht had another idea. He asked me if I could cook and in my head I was like I went to college I can read a recipe book. Of course I can do this Johnson recalls. The owner of the boat canceled his dinner reservations and I cooked for him. He offered me the job in between courses. Johnson thought yachting would be a short-lived chapter in her life but she has since worked her way up as a stewardess on various yachts. The 32-year-old joined Below Deck as a second stew in season two and viewers have watched everything from awkward moments (like when she confessed to having a secret crush on crew member Eddie) to heated blowups with chief stew Kate Chastain. Johnson says re-watching those emotional moments on TV is hard but ultimately being on the show has been a self-reflective process. There are things that make me cringe a little bit watching she admits. That s something that surprised me about the show how much it helped me grow. I would watch things and go Oh that s something I could work on. When Johnson is back on land in Fort Lauderdale she tries to make up for lost time. I enjoy having my friends over for dinner parties getting back to the regularities of life... I love to play tennis and as cheesy as it is I love to rollerblade Like Captain Lee she lives in Fort AMY JOHNSON Southern on the Seas Lauderdale s Croissant Park neighborhood and says her favorite places to hang out are nearby Tap 42 S3 and Rhythm & Vine. While she lives for adventure life on the high seas isn t forever. I m not what they call a lifetimer Johnson says. This does have an expiration date for me. She reveals that she is finishing up her real estate license and plans to do some investing with her brother. She says she doesn t know if she ll be asked to return to the show for another season but that s OK she s happy exactly where she is. LMGFL.COM OCTOBER 2015 37 K KATE CHASTAIN It s Good to be Queen 38 OCTOBER 2015 LMGFL.COM ate Chastain is known as a lot of things on the reality show Below Deck stern boat mom controversial blanket animal maker and master of improvisation (she can even turn basil into mint). But no matter what you think she wants you to know that what you see this season is who she really is. I think season three Kate is the real Kate Chastain says. I think in season two I was nervous new boat new crew new experience. But I was more comfortable this season. I m only a stern person when it comes time to work but I prefer to be having fun. While the 32-year-old says she is working on smiling a little more she won t apologize for her self-proclaimed resting b tch face. My face has always been like that. I probably had a b tchy resting face at age 5 she says. I think it s really ironic that nobody ever goes on the bridge when Captain Lee is driving the boat and says Why aren t you smiling Sometimes I wish that it was the same for me. Over the last two seasons Chastain has experienced rocky times with certain members of the crew including second stewardess Amy Johnson. I loved Amy when I first met her in fact within the first week we were planning on getting an RV and driving across the country together Chastain says. And then you know cabin fever happens things got miscommunicated and we had a falling out. But now we re back to where we started. The night before our photo shoot the two were even planning a spa night and slumber party. Chastain has been a yachtie for eight years she started at the bottom working in the laundry room. She recalls being a spoiled girl who had no idea what she was getting herself into. It wasn t until she got her first stew job that she realized what she was up against. I took my first chief stew job thinking Chief stew is so easy. All they do is make orders. And let me tell you I was horrible. I ended up sending my first chief stew an apology email two years later saying I am so sorry I was a brat. I didn t realize how hard your job is. What Chastain sees for her future is a bit of a change from the open ocean. She recently moved from Fort Lauderdale back to Melbourne Beach and soon plans to transition into the world of private jet stewardship. It s a natural progression for a lot of yachties because it s double the money and half the work she says. Chastain also writes a blog called Lucky Charming and has completed a book with the same name that s expected to be out next summer. It s like Eat Pray Love for the quarter-life-crisis generation she explains. Even with all of these new gigs on the horizon Chastain claims she will still freelance for yachts and doesn t rule out staying with Below Deck. And as for season three she says she leaves fans with quite the cliffhanger. I think there will be some unanswered questions in the finale that will really excite the viewers. Since that time Sanda and his team have invested 100 million in developing North Beach Village. Within a 1.5-mile radius (starting directly behind the W Fort Lauderdale to the south spreading west to the Intracoastal and north to Vistamar Street) they have renovated 15 boutique hotels launched a full-service cafe and a separate outdoor bistro host popular monthly pool parties and are opening an art gallery... And they re just getting started. When Sanda first came to Fort Lauderdale he truly felt he was in paradise explains Christine Sposa VP of operations for North Beach Village (NBV). He wanted to create a European-style village with plazas and bistros and places where locals and tourists can gather and converse. As for buying dilapidated properties when no one else would (or could) Sposa says It s like there was a fire and everyone ran out. But we ran in and we had some hoses The hotels of NBV are a rarity in Fort Lauderdale boutique-sized and affordable boasting midcentury modern architecture with contemporary interiors all just a block from the beach. The properties share a spa and fitness center (at the Royal Palms Resort) as well as bike rentals a large cafe yoga classes and numerous special event spaces. The design element is of particular significance in LMGFL.COM OCTOBER 2015 47 this area as the MiMo style has been mostly contained to Miami. The architecture is an important part of this neighborhood s story so we re excited to be restoring and preserving some of its most iconic buildings says Dev Motwani president of Merrimac Ventures and codeveloper of upcoming neighbor the Gale Boutique Hotel & Residences (previously the historic Escape Hotel). NBV hotels also feature vintage-inspired interiors designed by fellow Swede Ulrika Kristofersson as well as pop art installed throughout the rooms. NBV hotel properties currently include the flagship North Beach Hotel AQUA Hotel Tranquilo Hotel and the newly finished Flow Hotel. Additionally rather than disregard the all-male all-nude history that made these hotels popular in the 1970s and 80s (before much of the area fell into disrepair) Sanda designated three hotels as male LGBT properties Hotel Lush Royale Grand Palm Plaza and Elysium Resort (where clothing is optional). Sposa explains the vision for NBV is one of inclusion creating an overall community feel. We use the term Village Life because it s a relaxing place to be to kick back enjoy and spread love and happiness she says. This extends well beyond the NBV hotels. We share our village with many neighbors some big hotels (Hilton the W) some condos Sposa says. They all think of themselves as being part of North Beach Village. It s a community and we are all chipping in to make it better and better. The fun love and happiness mentality of NBV does not just apply to hotel guests. The area hosts numerous events and houses a variety of outposts of great interest to locals. The Royal Palms Resort for example has become known for its monthly Mod Saturdays pool parties when up to 100 revelers gather to celebrate the past and embrace the future. Each month we make it better add a twist different DJs and specialty drinks Sposa says. The hotel also hosts a Sunday Funday pool party which used to be directed at the LGBT crowd but now draws a wholly diverse group of partygoers. Both events are expected to increase in frequency as their popularity grows. The North Beach Hotel is also home to the Village Cafe a charming indoor-outdoor restaurant that features entertainment every Saturday night and hosts a series of cultural dinners (Italian night Colombian night etc.). And at the corner of Breakers Avenue and Belmar Street is a quaint outdoor piazza that the village runs as the Plaza Bistro during high season. Using a food truck as an outdoor kitchen the bistro delivers full meals in a casual European-style setting. The village also boasts numerous event spaces including a 1 200-square-foot ballroom and rooftop at the Royal Palms. The location is great for everything from weddings (Sposa hosted her son s nuptials here) to popup restaurants like this summer s sold-out Hardy Park Bistro and Nacho Bizness events. Expanding on the European vibe this month the village will be opening an art gallery directly across from Patrons relax outside the North Beach Village Gallery the cafe on Breakers Avenue. The goal of the gallery is to offer pieces that are affordable and that capture the art that will be symbolic of the area Sposa explains. The eventual vision for this street and one that the area is working on in conjunction with the city is to widen the pedestrian walkway or possibly even close off traffic all together (a la Las Ramblas in Barcelona). Potential plans for the future of NBV (the group still owns six undeveloped properties as well as vacant land) include residences a market mini golf a retro ice cream shop and more. We have a lot of options Sposa says. Seeing how people react as I m showing them around reminds me how great this area really is. Everyone is like a kid in Disney World their eyes open wide and they say This is an amazing place it s like the best-kept secret. Not anymore. 48 OCTOBER 2015 LMGFL.COM North Beach Village Gallery is hosting an opening party on Oct. 16 at 5 30 p.m. NORTH BEACH Just a couple of miles due north of NBV another neighborhood is quietly making its mark on the Fort Lauderdale scene. A small section of North Beach anchored to the west by Bokampers Sports Bar & Grill on Oakland Park Boulevard and to the east by A1A has grown into a quaint neighborhood of restaurants residences and friends. The few blocks from Northeast 32nd Avenue to Northeast 34th Avenue have recently sprouted some wonderful new businesses. Outposts such as Fishtales Restaurant & Nightclub known for its live music Blue Jean Blues jazz club Italian restaurant La Dolce Vita and the kitschy 4 30 Boardroom Bar make for an exciting and eclectic night scene. Newcomer Scolapasta from New Jersey-born Denise Silvano has already received an amazing response after just a few months of being open. All the locals are coming in and coming back two-to-three times a week just from word of mouth Silvano says. She and her working partner Rosario say they selected the area because it had that lovely walking feeling. Silvano adds No words can explain the feeling that I got when I first saw this little neighborhood. She compares what she calls the area s rebirth to Manhattan s Meatpacking District or the lively downtown of Montclair New Jersey. Set on buying a building rather than becoming a tenant Silvano found her best luck by hitting the town as if time was turned back 50 years. I got a facial and was told to go to Mr. Black the attorney down the street. He told me to go see Mr. Fox the local broker. It was straight out of a movie Surprisingly many of the neighborhood s businesses (Fishtail Blue Jean Blues Sandra Topel s Wellness Spa and more) are owned by women. It s a very homey place Silvano says. Everyone watches over everybody s business and we all support one another. LMGFL.COM OCTOBER 2015 49 FEATURE A New Cafe Blooms BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON ANN S FLORIST Buddy Shaw and Kim Fuentes the brother-and-sister team behind Ann s Florist on Las Olas Boulevard will soon add a new element to their eclectic floral and collectibles shop a coffee cafe and patisserie. We actually got the idea from customers who would say they could stay in the shop for hours and if we had food they would recalls Fuentes. At first we joked about it but as time went on we decided it wasn t a bad idea. The shop named after the siblings mother Ann has been on Las Olas for 23 years but with the loads of condos and apartments under construction and new foot traffic on the east end of the boulevard this fall seemed like the perfect time to add on a cafe. Where we are located on Las Olas is a lot quieter in the evenings than down on the opposite end Shaw points out. It s been like that for years. But with Louie Bossi s Sweet Nectar and The Archives opening up more people are hanging out in this area. Fuentes says the space will have the feeling of a cafe in Paris her favorite city in the world. The tables will weave through the shop s different vignettes which are filled with one-of-a-kind collectibles trinkets and antiques. Sort of like they re part of the whole environment of the store Fuentes says. We ll have nice music customers will have the beautiful smells of coffee and flowers... It ll be a very high-sensory thing. The new cafe is under construction on the east side of the store and is set to open in November. There will be outdoor seating and a long bar facing Las Olas where customers can sip eat and people-watch from the window. Eventually we would like to get into craft beers and wine Shaw explains. Our hours will be extended maybe to 10 or 11 at night. Right now details about who will be making the pastries and supplying the coffee haven t been finalized but Fuentes says to expect European-inspired treats with a twist... Foods that are savory and rich. She adds Definitely macarons because they are so pretty they remind me of flowers. Then in the summer we ll offer ice pops and other unique things you can t get everywhere else. Ann s Florist 1001 E. Essentially these changes will enable high school students to perform to the best of their abilities with the ultimate goal of helping them get accepted into college. The SAT is currently comprised of three sections math critical reading and writing skills the new SAT will include only two sections math and evidence-based reading and writing. The dreaded third section of the SAT the essay will now be optional and if chosen students will be allowed double the time to write it as opposed to the 25 minutes previously allocated. High school students will no longer have to study massive vocabulary lists and memorize rarely used words. The focus will now be on words that students will encounter on a regular basis in college and in future jobs. Fewer multiple choice answers (four options instead of five) will save time as test takers will have one less answer to read and process. The four-choice format also increases the chances of a correct answer from 20 percent to 25 percent. Additionally the new SAT will have 16 fewer questions than the older version and there will be no penalty for guessing (Previously students were penalized a quarter point for each incorrect answer on multiple-choice questions.) The first SAT testing to follow the new rules is scheduled for March 2016. Only time will tell if these changes will indeed bring positive results and get more students into college. Along with constant changes life also brings constant testing something for which students that want to acquire a college degree will have to be prepared... Gaudeamus igitur hange is the only constant in life Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus once concluded. And for the 2015-16 academic year the wind of change comes from the direction of the College Board the private nonprofit corporation founded in 1900 with the sole purpose of expanding access to higher education. After extensive research and long debates the College Board has implemented new changes to its Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). In some aspects the changes revert back to the SATs of the 90s and early 2000s (for example the test will return to its old point scale of 1 600 instead of 2 400) in other ways the test will remain as it s been the past decade. Overall the modifications are meant to save time and to better assess students analytical knowledge rather than 52 OCTOBER 2015 LMGFL.COM E D U C A T I O N P R O F I L E AMERICAN HERITAGE SCHOOL 12200 W. No one looks forward to the time when you can no longer care for yourself. When that time comes your ability to live as good a life as physically possible will depend on what preparations you make today. Exercise eat right stay mentally fit and financially prepared. Long-term care can be expensive and costs can quickly impact a person s financial security. People are living longer which increases the odds of developing a chronic illness that could require on-going care. If the day comes that you are unable to do basic things such as dressing yourself getting in and out of bed eating a meal or going to the bathroom alone you will need to be prepared for the costs of paying professional caregivers for the help you need. As health care costs escalate an increasing number of people are protecting themselves by planning for long-term care. Though Medicare covers skilled care for acute conditions such as heart attacks and broken bones in general it does not cover the custodial care required for chronic medical conditions. When making your plans for a secure retirement it s also important to consider longterm care needs as a way of helping to protect your assets so they aren t exhausted by possible extended-care costs. By planning ahead you can help maintain your independence and help ensure you have financial security to live your life your way. There are quite a few factors to consider when planning for long-term care. For this reason it s important to work with a financial professional who understands your needs and who can design a plan that will meet those needs at a cost you can afford. Specifically look for a financial professional who is supported by a well-established company with a solid history of strength and stability. A company that is well-positioned to deliver long-term value and will be there when you need it most. The right long-term care plan can provide you with options on how you receive the care you need and where. It gives you choices about how your final years are lived and where. And maybe with such a plan can help reduce the fear of outliving your resources. Thanks to the support of the local community we look forward to celebrating the area s growing dining scene during this year s festival. Taste Fort Lauderdale will kick off on Feb. 24 2016 with a Seaside Eats themed event at the historic Bonnet House presented by Chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network s Restaurant Impossible. The event will be a walk-around dining experience with South Florida chefs offering their favorite dishes at various tasting stations throughout the venue. Additional Broward dinners will continue throughout the week. Confirmed appearances include Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos with Angelo Elia at Casa D Angelo Marc Vetri with Giovanni Rocchio at Valentino and Todd English with Toby Joseph at Wild Sea in addition to a special preview of the upcoming Auberge Beach Residences & Spa by Robert Curry and Paul Lemieux. Taste Fort Lauderdale will culminate on Sunday Feb. 28 with a Bloody Mary Brunch hosted by the cast of Chopped at The RitzCarlton Fort Lauderdale. Tickets for these events can be purchased starting on Monday Oct. 19. For complete information and tickets visit ROCK ROLL & STROLL On Oct. 13 from 6 30 to 9 30 p.m. Mizner Park will host its annual Tastemakers Rock Roll & Stroll a progressive food and cocktail tasting event with delicious bites and live music. Greg Lieberman and childhood friend Yonathan Ghersi just opened 26 Degree Brewing Company in Pompano Beach the second brewery to open in the area (Bangin Banjo Brewery opened earlier this summer). The neighborhood brewery which includes a 5 000-squarefoot tasting taproom is now one of South Florida s largest brewing operations offering 30 tap handles a mix of local and national craft brews as well as 10 standard and rotating seasonal beers developed in-house. 26 Degree Brewing Company 2600 E. Like many restaurants Scolapasta is making a huge effort to buy local produce and serve grass-fed hormonefree meats. We started with the local heirloom tomato salad with arugula and large shavings of Parmesan it tasted like it was straight from the garden. I ve had a hard time finding many octopus dishes that are cooked just right but the grilled octopus and calamari with fingerling potatoes olives and fennel was the BEST I ve ever had. And I strongly suggest creating your own meat and cheese board ( 5 for each item) where the wild boar salami is the must-order. Everything was simply cooked and not over-sauced. For example the saffron tagliolini with littleneck clams and white wine broth is smooth and clean. The general manager Rosario made sure his Italian family s special fettuccine recipe made it on the menu. It s a meaty treat with braised short ribs caramelized onions and an unexpected twist with stracciatella di bufala a cheese produced from Italian buffalo milk. There are many sweet ways to end your meal. I suggest the creamy panna cotta made with Greek yogurt and berries and dusted with cinnamon. Or try an Italian tradition plump peaches in chilled red wine. You ll spear the soaked peaches then polish off the leftover wine. When it comes to restaurants I love stumbling upon little gems. On a rainy night my husband and I took a drive through Fort Lauderdale s North Beach and discovered the newly opened Italian bistro Scolapasta. We came in knowing nothing about the restaurant and left feeling like part of the family. The owner Denise Silvano a New Jersey woman with strong Italian roots completely gutted and revamped the space that used to be a hair salon. She also outfitted the small restaurant with a few pieces of furniture from her mother-in-law (affectionately known by the family as Nonna ) adding a homey touch to the brick-walled decor. The best seat in the house is the only table with a white tablecloth and it s Nonna s table.
