Instead of filling my home with cookie-cutter massproduced artwork and furnishings I wanted to create a space with permanent memories exclusive to my life. Now I m able to look around our home and remember everything from wild adventures with my girlfriend in Alaska to romantic vacations with my husband in Spain to the glorious coastal sunsets of my hometown on the Gulf Coast. Many of the pieces tell a visual story of an area I visited remind me of a unique artist I met by accident or symbolize a stage in my life at the time. (Every time I look at a painting that I brought back from Mendoza Argentina I m flooded with sweet memories of the trip where I fell in love with my husband.) The point Art whether it s a painting sculpture or even a Broadway show is capable of evoking so much emotion. It can take us back in time challenge us to think or simply let our minds escape from reality. In this month s art and entertainment issue we hope to ignite some artistic passion within you. Whether it s a performance at your local theater an exhibition at a museum or the extravaganza of Art Basel I hope you will use the next few months to explore your cultural side. I promise your life will be a lot richer. The A-List Angela s top lusts and musts this month Photo courtesy of P rez Art Museum Miami After some art peeping at P rez Art Museum Miami I go straight to the outdoor swings overlooking Biscayne Bay. re Grab a coffee and just stare at the water or try out the te new fall menu at my favorite e. restaurant in Miami Verde. Some of the standouts are the Crispy Burrata with tomato rosemary jam and the Carbonara Pizza a unique combination of pecorino and bacon topped with a poached egg. 1103 Biscayne Boulevard Miami 305.375.3000 pamm.org Phase one of The Mockingbird Trail a 2-milelong urban art trail through Flagler Village in downtown Fort Lauderdale recently took flight. Along the trail you ll discover sculptures by Valeria Yamamoto outdoor seating and plenty of spots to play or get some exercise (which is the point). While you won t find any sculptures of actual mockingbirds you will see feathers or footprints of the state bird. Download the map and then take a bike ride or stroll. I suggest a pit stop at BREW Urban Cafe for a coffee. mockingbirdtrail.com Angela Caraway-Carlton Angela Caraway-Carlton acaraway lmgfl.com 14 NOVEMBER 2015 LMGFL.COM MOUTHGUARD Dental Health & Beauty offers the latest advancements in Preventative Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. LMGFL.COM NOVEMBER 2015 19 FASHION SHIREENe on the scen By Deco Drive Anchor Shireen Sandoval POSTCARDS FROM ENGLAND D Bath is this incredible rustically romantic city snuggled ed into the rolling hills of Somerset in South West England. d. The city is known for its hot springs and splendid Georgian architecture but most impressive is the historical and quite frankly mind-boggling Roman Baths a well-preserved site for public bathing. I was astonished by the history beauty and the sheer fact that t the thing is still standing. The site was originally founded d in A.D. 75 by the Celts to take advantage of the natural mineral-rich hot springs which have been rising in that area for thousands of years. The baths were dedicated to the goddess Sulis who represented nourishment healing and life-giving motherhood. All good things come to an end however and when the Romans invaded England they claimed the baths as their own. In turn they flocked to the gathering place for socializing exercising healing ailments and of course ultimately to get clean. The Roman Baths now has a museum gift shop and restaurant (called the Pump Room) built around it. Although you can t touch the water inside the longstanding relic you can drink it from a safe supply provided by the restaurant. If you long to bathe as the Romans did the luxurious Thermae Bath Spa (thermaebathspa.com) provides that experience. PRECIOUS METALS Lisa George s L George Designs are statement pieces necklaces bracelets and rings that work in tandem with one another. The main concept behind her line is to build a jewelry wardrobe not just buy a one-off piece. Whether you choose gold silver pewter or precious gems everything s interchangeable and works well together. My favorite way to wear my L George collection is to layer and mix metals. With beautiful clothing from one of my favorite boutiques HiNT Miami we added a soft flare to Lisa s already strong pieces. Fall is always the best time to combine different colors textures and prints. But Scott Morreau s obsession is the often hush-hush unmentionables of society underwear. To me underwear is more than just a bland basic Morreau says. It s as much a fashion statement as a great pair of jeans. Seriously a guy can never have too many pairs. He s not kidding. Unlike most men who may have a small rotation of tighty-whities or Calvin Klein boxers stuffed in a drawer this Wilton Manors resident has hundreds of pairs in all styles and colors neatly tucked away in their own dedicated dresser. The 42-year-old s passion for men s underwear recently sparked him to leave his real estate career to create Unzipped Citizen a monthly service that delivers members a hand-picked box of designer underwear directly to their doors. Men s underwear has become somewhat of an afterthought. In department stores they are usually tucked way in the back with little attention to style comfort fabric or convenience Morreau says. Most guys don t have the time or desire to shop for underwear. Plus the selection is pretty slim. I wanted awesome and unique brands to mix up my wardrobe. Now I curate underwear from all over the world. When a member joins he selects his size and cut preference trunks briefs or jocks. If he prefers to be surprised each month he can select mix it up and the Unzipped team will send a variety of cuts. While Morreau currently offers 15 brands many of which can t be found in stores he s always adding to his collection as he discovers new designers. His favorites If I had to just pick one (or two) it would be Freedom Reigns and I love 2Eros from Australia. They are constantly coming out with awesome new designs. Of course I had to ask Morreau the obvious clich question What does he wear boxers or briefs That depends on my mood he says with a smile. But since you asked today I m wearing boxer-briefs. Subscriptions start at 14.99 per month. Or you can shop the online store at unzippedcitizen.com. 22 NOVEMBER 2015 LMGFL.COM RAISE ROOF THE Go to the best. For all your repair and re-roofing needs. BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY WORLD RED EYE Lifestyle Time has been kind to you. What has been the hardest part of aging so far Cindy Crawford Here s the thing you see little physical changes I feel good when I exercise and eat right. I don t want to focus on the negatives. I think Nora Ephron wrote in her book 10 years from now you re going to wish for that self. L Do you wish for your old self when you see your daughter who s your mini-me C I don t think she s exactly my mini-me but in a lot of ways she resembles me. I always tease her because of her hair. She doesn t have to do anything to it and it looks perfect when she wakes up in the morning. And I m like Give me my old hair back I didn t appreciate it back then and she doesn t appreciate it at 14 either. Again it s not until later that you think Why didn t I appreciate my hair when I didn t have to do anything to it L You posed nude for Playboy would you pose nude at 50 C I posed nude last year but I wouldn t do Playboy now. Why torture my 16-year-old son But I won t say that I ll never do a nude again. L What about your daughter She s modeling now would you allow her to pose nude C I think all my husband and I can hope for Kaia is that she makes decisions when she is on her own that she knows enough to listen to her inner voice. L Your book is called Becoming. Who have you become at 50 C I am a wife a mother a businesswoman and a model in the sense that when I m in front of the camera I m still very comfortable. I like working especially if I have a good rapport with a photographer. I like helping them tell a story. That s what fashion to me is. But I m a friend I m a sister and a daughter. Sometimes I sit by myself and read a good book too. L Do you have any regrets C I didn t always take advantage of opportunities because I felt intimidated. There were times when I was invited to do things and I thought Maybe I m not going to fit in or They re all so sophisticated. Inside all of us is a little insecure kid. Today I would say Just do it anyway. L What is your favorite photo in Becoming C Every single photo in the book is a favorite. I was able to narrow it down to 150 out of the hundreds and hundreds of thousands images of me. I honestly couldn t pick one. L What do you like to do when you visit South Florida C The main thing we like to do is just be outside. We ll wake up take a long walk... and we want to eat outside any chance we can. We like to try new things. We went to Makoto at Bal Harbour Shops Matador Room at the Miami Beach EDITION and Beachcraft here at the hotel I like to be able to walk home after dinner. L Do you really use your skin care line Meaningful Beauty C Absolutely. I have facials I exercise I try to get enough sleep I take care of myself. But my daily skin care routine is Meaningful Beauty. L And you re still changing the beauty line C The great thing is that whenever I m like Dr. Sebagh my skin is changing and I need a little more brightening or I need firming we can add. As my skin ages and our core audience s skin ages we try to add more efficacy to the product. L At 50 what do you want everyone to know about you C I wrote this book for myself and really wanting to share my life. But at some point if you re happy with yourself then if people love it that s great. If they don t that s OK too because I did what I wanted to do. That is one of the gifts of getting older. You realize the first person you want to please is yourself. LMGFL.COM NOVEMBER 2015 37 COVER STORY 38 NOVEMBER 2015 LMGFL.COM A STARK DIFFERENCE From being Miley Cyrus VMA muse to creating a cover for Cosmo South Florida artist Jen Stark lives life in color BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY RONY ALWIN LMGFL.COM NOVEMBER 2015 39 COVER STORY IT WAS SURREAL TO SEE MY WORK IN FRONT OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AND CELEBRITIES. I WENT TO MILEY S AFTER-PARTY AND GOT TO HANG WITH ALL OF THEM. SHE WAS SO ECSTATIC AFTER THE SHOW. MTV s 2015 Video Music Awards used with permission by MTV. 2015 Viacom Media Networks. Describe it however you want Jen Stark s art certainly turns heads. Earlier this year the Miami native s hypnotizing creations grabbed the attention of tongue-baring Miley Cyrus leading to the biggest creation of Stark s career yet the rainbow wormhole tunnel that Cyrus slid through to make a dramatic entrance at this summer s MTV Video Music Awards. It was surreal to see my work in front of millions of people and celebrities Starks says. I went to Miley s after-party and got to hang with all of them. She was so ecstatic after the show. Stark credits another exciting project a special artwork cover she did for Cosmopolitan magazine s July Love Issue for initially getting her work noticed by Cyrus and MTV. But it was a chance invitation from the Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne to Cyrus home in Los Angeles (where Stark lives now) that helped seal the deal. Miley told me that she liked my artwork. She is really into color and 40 NOVEMBER 2015 LMGFL.COM Stark at Miami International Airport psychedelia so it was a perfect fit. A few days after Stark met Cyrus the singer texted her a mock-up that MTV had done using her artwork for a billboard promoting the VMAs. It was this weird cosmic coincidence recalls Stark. It was strange that I had just met her and that MTV was pitching me to her as well. While MTV wanted her to do promotional artwork for the show it was Cyrus who catapulted it to another level. Miley was pushing for more of my art to be included in the actual show. She was the one who made that happen. Stark started painting watercolors as a child with her grandfather who was a photographer and reporter for the Miami Herald and worked as an artist in his free time. She attended several art schools in Miami before earning her BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore but Stark credits construction paper for her Acid Free mural at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Stark painting her Meltdown mural at MIA now-distinct colorful twodimensional style. I was studying abroad in the south of France in 2004 and I was a college student on a budget Stark says. I needed to get art supplies that were affordable so I decided to get a cheap stack of construction paper. I brought it back to the studio and started experimenting and it s grown from there. Stark says the defining moment of her career came in 2011 when she was asked to do a mural for NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. She painted a dripping rainbow of colors down the side of the museum. I titled it Acid Free playing off a psychedelia theme and making a joke about the art world which is always very concerned about making sure materials are acid-free so they are not ruined 30 years later Stark says. Painting the museum gave me much more of presence. It s become a landmark in Fort Lauderdale. Last December Stark finished a permanent installation called Meltdown on the third floor of Miami International Airport between Terminals D and E. Since this is a busy part of the airport Stark and her team had to work seven days straight from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. to complete the mural. Stark says it s one of her most meaningful pieces because of her strong family ties to the site. Both my grandparents and greatgrandparents owned a dairy farm in the late 1940s on the site which is now Miami International Airport. They were sort of pioneers taking over the land. Now 75 years later my mural is kind of bringing that full-circle. While the 32-year-old moved to Los Angeles three years ago to pursue bigger opportunities Stark s mother still lives in the same house off of Bird and Ludlam roads where she grew up. Stark will return to Miami for Art Basel where she ll be part of a group booth at the Untitled satellite art fair. In early March Stark has a solo show at Eric Firestone Gallery in New York s NoHo neighborhood where famous artists like Andy Warhol worked in the 60s and 70s. I was in New York last week and I stayed at the gallery because there is a little apartment in the back Stark says. There are photos of Basquiat and Haring hanging in the gallery apartment and it s so crazy to be on the same street that they lived and died and to feel the energy from their ghosts. It s amazing to think of all the artwork they created and how many people they touched. Now in my own way I m carrying on their legacy and continuing to spread art. As for her new bond with Cyrus Stark says She just texted me a few days and told me I have an idea for a new project So there are going to be things brewing. W hen the curtain rises at the start of each Broadway season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts President and CEO Kelley Shanley admits he still gets butterflies. He likens it to the first time he ever stepped onstage over 30 years ago as Alfie Doolittle in his high school s production of My Fair Lady. That was just a really exciting moment when the curtain opened and I thought Here we go we re gonna do this Shanley reminisces. Ever since I ve had such a deep appreciation for that moment because it represents the time where all the work that the cast and crew have done culminates in this effort to connect with an audience. Shanley lives and breathes theater and has passed this love of the stage on to his family. The 48-year-old says that a performance of Riverdance at the Broward Center even influenced his 9-year-old daughter Fiona to take up Irish step dancing. For the next two weeks she was dancing all over the house like the Riverdance dancers and finally my wife said Fiona do you want to learn to be an Irish step dancer She said yes so we found an Irish step-dancing school right here in Fort Lauderdale. We just attended the North America National Championships where she was ranked 16th among all the dancers in the nation in her age group. Shanley maintains that he wants the public to leave the theater with the same reaction his daughter had an almost overwhelming feeling of excitement and fascination with the performance. The Coral Springs resident encourages the public to come out for the Broward Center s 25th anniversary season which will feature many amazing brandnew Broadway shows including Newsies Kinky Boots and Dirty Dancing as well as performers such as Kristin Chenoweth and Mark Knopfler. Shanley admits that he will see a Broadway show enjoy the music and then completely wear out the soundtrack. When asked if he and the crew at the Broward Center had their own theme song Shanley lets out a hearty chuckle and says Believe it or not we actually talked about it when we had Pippin at the theater last year. They open with the song Magic to Do and that s how we think about our role we re trying to create memorable moments to create that moment of magic between the artists and the audience that can happen every night at the Broward Center. NEW DIGS Patrons will now be able to enjoy the Broward Center s shows in greater comfort thanks to a 60 million renovation project that was completed last year. The enhancements focused on creating an ideal theater experience for audiences by improving the facility and by providing opportunities to educate people in the community (through the addition of the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center). Over the past few years the center has rolled out the new Club Level which is a premium packaged experience where theatergoers get valet parking and access to the Club Level lounge which includes a buffet and open bar an hour before the show. It has also introduced the Intermezzo Lounge another premium experience that includes some lighter appetizers beer and wine and Marty s Bistro on the river where guests can dine and then attend the performance. Shanley conveys that he hopes these renovations ensure audience members have the ultimate experience at the Broward Center. It s part of offering chances for people to socialize and share the experience a little bit more rather than just walking into the theater and popping into their seats he says. When asked how he suggests theatergoers enjoy an ideal night at the center Shanley says Given our location on the Riverwalk there is now the free river trolley where people can go up and down the river and hit restaurants on Las Olas before a show. However a guest can imagine the perfect evening we hope that we ve provided a way for that to happen. 46 NOVEMBER 2015 LMGFL.COM OUR WISH May this be the only broken bone this holiday season. Yet an employersponsored savings plan such as a 401(k) may not be enough to provide the savings you need. For many an Individual Retirement Account is one of the best ways to accumulate additional retirement savings on a tax-advantaged basis. There are two main types of IRAs Traditional and Roth. Both have the same contribution limits the same catch-up provisions for people age 50 and older (for this year s amount go to the Internal Revenue Service website www.irs.gov) and both allow your investment earnings to compound tax-deferred until you start taking withdrawals typically at retirement. To help determine which IRA is right for you consider how they differ. Eligibility You can contribute to a Traditional IRA provided you (or your spouse if you are married and file jointly) have earned income and you will not turn age 70 by the end of the year. In contrast Roth IRAs are subject to income limits which means not everyone can take advantage of one. (To learn more about your eligibility consult the IRS website at www.irs.gov). Deductibility Contributions to a Traditional IRA may be tax deductible subject to certain requirements. And any contributions you make may help lower your taxable income in the year in which you make them. With a Roth IRA contributions are made with aftertax dollars meaning the money you contribute has already been taxed with no benefit of a deduction. Other Tax Advantages When money is taken from a Roth IRA at retirement it s potentially taxfree -- and that includes your taxdeferred earnings. That s different from a Traditional IRA which is fully taxable at current tax rates when withdrawn. Traditional IRAs require you to begin taking minimum required distributions at age 70 -- whether or not you need the money. If you fail to take your distribution you ll face stiff penalties. In contrast Roth IRA owners are not subject to mandatory withdrawals at age 70 . This means you can extend the tax advantages of your account longer than with a Traditional IRA. Which is Better One rule of thumb suggests that if you think your tax rate today is higher than it will be in retirement a Traditional IRA may make sense. Conversely if your tax rate is lower than you think it will be in retirement a Roth IRA may be the better choice assuming you qualify for one. However because everyone s situation is different be sure to consult with a financial representative or tax professional to carefully weigh all the factors and determine which IRA is best for you. M. LMGFL.COM NOVEMBER 2015 55 PROFILE SPREADING THE GOSPEL OF THE GRAPE BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY WOOD SACHA LICHINE price points Whispering Angel Lichine s entry-level ros that s made with younger vines and is affordably priced at 22 a bottle Chateau d Esclans Rock Angel which is made from older vines is estate-grown and is 50 percent barrel fermented Les Clans which Lichine says is a very atypical ros in Provence and is 100 percent barrel fermented and the high-end Garrus which is made from grapes selected exclusively from a parcel of vines some ranging from 70 to 100 years old. Garrus is the most expensive ros in the world. You put this in a black glass and you ll think you re drinking a great white Burgundy Lichine says. Half of our Garrus is sold to the Mediterranean and people drink this on the back of their yachts. It s something that really goes down like baby Jesus in velvet pants. Lichine has been credited for kicking off a ros revolution. We started with 130 000 bottles of wine and now we re making 3.2 million this year he says. In 2014 Chateau d Esclans won 2014 European Winery of the Year. When Adam Strum [chairman of Wine Enthusiast Companies and editor and publisher of Wine Enthusiast magazine] called me up and said Do you know why we ve given you this award I said I guess so. It s all about riding the ros wave. And he said to me You haven t been riding the wave you created the wave. Lichine now lives in the Royal Palm community right across from the Boca Resort where he is a member. His two children go to school at Saint Andrew s. When Lichine isn t promoting his wine he enjoys having dinner at places such as Casa D Angelo and Truluck s though he adds I wish we could see some more French bistros. But what he really wants to see More ros in Broward and Palm Beach counties. We do close to 20 000 cases in Florida now but 90 percent of that is south of Bal Harbour Lichine points out. I think the idea of coming to a community where the ros revolution has not yet occurred is always exciting. Dressed in a pink linen shirt Sacha Lichine sits at a table at the chic Boca Beach Club flanked by bottles of ros . I ve barely sat down to begin our interview when the waitress starts lining up glasses like soldiers and filling them with different versions of Lichine s pale pink wines. Good thing we re not driving Lichine says with a laugh as he starts swirling and sipping his first glass. Lichine owns Chateau d Esclans which is nestled in France s C tes de Provence region and is where he produces some of the most hailed most expensive ros s in the world. He recently moved to Boca Raton to be closer to his national importers and fancies himself as an evangelist of sorts. We just spread the gospel of the grape Lichine says. It s all about shaking hands making friends and selling wine. You could say wine flows through Lichine s veins. His father Alexis Lichine (who s been called the Pope of Wine ) wrote the Encyclopedia of Wine and Spirits back in the 60s. He owned Chateau Prieur -Lichine in Bordeaux and played a key role in getting producers to label their wines by the grape variety or varieties from which they were made. He was so far ahead of his time that he went from city to city and did a bit of what Est e Lauder did as far as grass-roots only he converted people to wine Lichine says. The wine heir is now following in his father s footsteps blazing his own trail of pink. It all started in 1999 when Lichine decided to sell the family vineyard in Bordeaux and headed south to make ros . Everyone thought I was out of my mind leaving Bordeaux to go to Provence he says. In 2006 Lichine bought the run-down Chateau d Esclans and revitalized the estate. While ros often has the negative perception of being too sweet and cheaply made Lichine s goal was to make a high-quality variety. He says he took a Champagne marketing approach with hopes of making ros grand. The 2007 real estate market crash caused people s heads to spin and foreclosures to climb into monumental numbers. Before the sky was the limit says Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish. Everyone was buying way above their means when the market collapsed. Buyers are now more hesitant banks and mortgage companies are far more conservative. In 2014 residential sales showed a marked increase with an influx of foreign investors and cash sales. With 23 690 total sales of single-family homes at an average of 157.42 per square foot by the end of 2014 the economy shows a recovery. As of the end of September three-quarters of the way through the year the Broward County Property Appraiser s office showed 17 768 singlefamily homes sold this year at an average of 164.50 a square foot. Sales are up but not as drastically as last year s sales shares Parrish. I worry when there are drastic increases when prices go too high too quickly. That s when we should be worried about another crash. The sales assessment ratio is currently at 7 percent for 2015 this makes for a slow and steady market in which buyers can shop. It is the perfect time of year to shop with more confidence as the close of 2015 approaches sellers will be eager to unload properties before the year ends. There will be a flurry of activity to close sales before the end of the year but it s not the feeding frenzy of last year with rapid-fire prices Parrish remarks. In February 2012 Leor Barak invested in a quaint yogurt shop in Wilton Manors called Nuts About Yogurt. But with a flood of similar soft serve shops in the area his business soon suffered. To boost sinking sales Barak dreamed up a cheesy plan to lure in more customers He would make grilled cheese sandwiches using a waffle iron. It s something we all grew up with and grilled cheese is such an amazing canvas that you can do so much with says Barak. I wanted what we do to be memorable. The intent was to be different. Instead of the traditional cheese sandwich with tomato or bacon Barak added unique ingredients and even created a made-from-scratch tomato bisque that acts as a creamy dip for the grilled cheese. The melts which were named after Manhattan neighborhoods such as the Meatpacking District or SoHo became so popular that the yogurt shop soon morphed into the New York Grilled Cheese Co. It all just fell into place says Barak. Social media was huge. People started checking in and posting pictures. Next thing you know their friends from South Beach to Delray to Weston were coming in. Barak ended up selling all of his yogurt machines to make Caption room for a second dining room. With business booming in Broward Barak recently decided it was time to move north. In December he ll open a second location in Boca Raton across from Mizner Park and the iPic Theater. All of the Wilton Manors favorites will be there like the Manhattan which is creamy mac and cheese stuffed inside a grilled cheese sandwich and Barak s personal favorite the SoHo Sweet Cheeses which is a sweet and salty mix of Brie and bacon. But the Boca location will also have items not offered in Wilton Manors including new breakfast dishes as well as vegan and vegetarian options. The kitchen in Wilton Manors is the little engine that could Barak says. But the Boca location will have a bigger space for us to create new things we never had the space for. Barak is in the process of writing manuals to begin franchising in 2016. He plans to start out with only three to four franchises so it s done right. Once the new Boca location is up and running he will also begin looking for his next locations. I have my eyes on Miami. That s where we get the biggest requests from fans to go. For something hearty try Mam Mamma s Sunday Gravy Rigatoni Elia s childhood favorite that he used to have every Sunday with his family in Italy. It s a huge plate of braised pork ribs and veal and beef meatballs braised for hours in San Marzano tomato sauce definitely big enough to share. The Porchetta and Egg Sandwich is another standout served with a fried egg on top of warm porchetta and caramelized onions on pizza bread Dijon mustard gives it an extra kick. Winning sides include the breakfast potatoes with olive oil and fragrant rosemary and the chicken sausage. If you have a sweet tooth the Nutella French toast with poached pears is sinfully good. Skip the traditional mimosas and instead sip Angelo s signature Orange Crush made with fresh-squeezed orange juice orange vodka triple sec and a splash of Sprite. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Angelo Pizza Bar and Tapas 4215 N. I mean what little girl or boy doesn t want to fly Now as an adult there are still many days that I wish I could escape the confines of my office and glide through the air sprinkling pixie dust. Turns out there is a real-life job that s almost as magical wine angel. Cibo Wine Bar with locations in South Beach and Coral Gables is opening up a Fort Lauderdale location this month and along with offering the same Italiancentric menu and a huge selection of fine wines the restaurant s famous wine angels will be center stage. These agile women who are attached to a harness and suspended from a wire elegantly swoop through the air to retrieve bottles of wine from a dramatic 15-foot-tall glass-enclosed wine cellar. Like everything that Cibo does from pasta making to pizza tossing to slicing imported prosciutto the angels are on display for the entire restaurant to see. It s the true meaning of dinner and a show. The wine tower is filled with up to 3 500 bottles so wine angels must study a detailed wine map in order locate a bottle. Wines are arranged by region and the most expensive bottles (up to 2 200) are carefully stored on the highest shelves. Cibo offers many Italian wines although it also has popular Napa brands such as Caymus and Duckhorn in addition to small boutique and vintage collections. Angels use a remote to lift them up and down and once in the air they kick and push (and even add in some pretty acrobatics) their way along the tower to the desired spot. With Cibo opening in Broward I was offered the chance to be a wine angel for a night. Since my name Angela means angel I decided I was halfway qualified for the job. I immediately pictured myself twirling Caption spinning and wowing customers how hard could it really be Turns out wine angels need some serious heaven-sent talent. The basic job requirement You can t be afraid of heights. Thankfully I m not though I was terrified of dropping a pricey bottle. As soon as I was harnessed in and after making head wine angel Paulina Arango assure me numerous times that I wouldn t fall to my death I asked What happens if you drop a bottle Sommelier Amy Weidig quickly responded with a straight face We don t. I was given simple instructions for my training Wear all black and slip-on flats. I devilishly disobeyed the shoe rule and instead wore a fabulous pair of blackand-gold booties. My fashion choice would force me to fall from grace almost immediately. Within minutes of being suspended in the air I lost control and kicked two bottles off the shelf. A guardian angel must have been watching over me because miraculously the bottles did not break I quickly repented and put on the backup flats I packed. I learned it takes so much coordination and balance to find grab and safely bring down the wine. Sadly most of my spins and turns were by accident. It requires a lot of core and arm work and boy can those harness straps rub you the wrong way. But it s all worth it. Other than the flying the best part of the job is entertaining the diners even though I was far from graceful they took pictures clapped and watched in amazement. I can t stop thinking about my night soaring through the air. Paulina says she only intended to do the unique job for a few months but she s been an angel for three years. Who can blame her Being a wine angel is heaven on earth Cibo Wine Bar 4100 N.
