B E S T W I N T ER 2 016 WESTWOOD Welcome to SEE THE MO VIE 8 BEST Dipping into the past to build the future By Jack Heffron I CAN THINK OF FEW BETTER PLACES to spend a mellow Saturday afternoon than Henke Winery and Restaurant in Westwood. A plate of cheeses meats and crackers a splash of Cabernet music wafting gently through the rooms. Like proud soldiers dozens of bottles line the windowsills that run along the front room s perimeter medals hanging on their necks awards won at state national and international competitions through the years. Joe Henke shrugs modestly when asked how many he s won. Hundreds he says. Easily hundreds. Several times his wines have won Best in Ohio. At award ceremonies he s poured a glass for two governors. Foodie websites annually list his establishment among the country s top urban wineries. In an article on urban wineries a few years ago USA Today prominently featured Henke Winery. Not that all of these achievements have led to a whole lot of renown beyond the west side except among wine aficionados who drive from Louisville Indianapolis and other cities to taste his wines. Eastsiders however aren t exactly lining up at the door. When they do come Joe says they re often taken by surprise. They don t expect to find a place like this on the west side he says. But if I can get them to come there s a 99 percent chance they ll be back. WEST 9 SEE THE MO WOOD Westwood s Misconception The Bowtie Plan Westwood itself suffers from a similar misconception. The city s largest neighborhood is seen by many outside its borders as just one of the fading inner-ring suburbs whose best days are behind it. That reputation however is beginning to change in part due to the efforts of four community organizations that have formed the Westwood Coalition to revitalize the neighborhood. The Westwood Civic Association Westwood Historical Society Westwood Works and WestCURC (Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation) have joined forces to push for the creation of an entertainment and business district centered at the intersection of Harrison and Epworth Avenues. Through the wide front window at the winery I can see the proposed district s ground zero. Such ambitious undertakings in older neighborhoods always present significant challenges but Westwood has a leg up on most because quite a few key pieces of the plan are already in place -- and have been there for quite a long time. First of all a town center needs a central building to serve as an anchor. Check. Got that. The Westwood Town Hall with its handsome Romanesque Revival architecture and graceful bell tower (that includes its own ghost) presides over the vicinity. Built in 1889 by the Village of Westwood the town hall housed government offices as well as the police and fire departments. It now offers classes in a variety of activities run by the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. A recent renovation has brought the building back to its former glory and it provides the setting for community activities ranging from the Westwood Art Show to the annual Deck the Hall holiday celebration. SEE O M The grounds of the town hall form an isosceles triangle that pokes into Harrison Avenue. Right across the street sits Gaines Triangle a small landscaped island of greenery separating Epworth from Harrison. Because the two triangles form what looks like a bowtie the Westwood Coalition now uses that name for its current plan for configuring the district. In the bowtie plan Gaines Triangle will be expanded into a larger green space. In the knot of the bowtie stands what might be the most critical piece in the plan -- a destination spot that will draw people to the district even from as far away as the eastside. A new home for the nationally recognized Madcap Puppets is being built in the 20 000-square-foot former Cincinnati Bell switching station that more recently served as a storage annex for the Hamilton County Public Library system. Having received two grants totaling more than 500 000 Madcap Puppets hopes to throw open the doors to its theater in 2017. Greg Kissel who has called Westwood home for more than 20 years is working on the design of the renovation through his company A359 Partners in Architecture. On this project he wears two hats. He and his wife Liz are very active in the community. Greg says that he s working with Madcap on converting the first floor into a small theater and a gallery while the second floor will feature a large theater that he calls a soaring space. Designed by distinguished Cincinnati architect Harry Hake (who also designed Crosley Field among many other notable buildings) the building which opened in 1927 looks far more ornate than one would expect for a public utility. But Greg explains It wasn t just a service building the way we think of them today. It represents the communication device becoming central to the community. Bell saw itself as a community partner in many ways. They used an ornate very classical style much like banks did. To that end the entry and the second floor staircase include Rookwood tile and Greg raves about the beautiful second-floor ceiling as well as many other unique features that will make the renovation challenging but the finished product spectacular. It takes a sensitive touch with a building like this he says. It s nice to see young people buying here and adding a new energy. All the wonderful older homes we have are attracting them. Across Urwiler Avenue from the theater stands the Westwood United Methodist Church. Designed by Samuel Hannaford one of Cincinnati s most distinguished architects of the 19th Century the Gothic Revival church was completed in 1896. With its eye-popping stonework and tall spire the church adds beauty and gravitas to the surrounding area a perfect complement to the entertainment and commerce planned for the district. Those plans include integrating among these exceptional buildings a bevy of new restaurants and shops along the corridor which would stretch from Montana to Boudinot avenues. Next to Henke Winery stands the hundred-year-old Engine 35 firehouse (see photo at right) which is now vacant. Planners have discussed turning it into a restaurant or bakery or some other type of entertainment venue. On Its Way Back Not that Westwoodians are waiting on completion of the entertainment district to begin revitalizing the neighborhood. Joe Henke among quite a few other residents believes the change is already well underway. Westwood is on its way back says Joe. It s nice to see young people buying here and adding a new energy. All the wonderful older homes we have are attracting them. He has lived in Westwood since 1978 and moved his winery-restaurant here in 2001. As for why he stays here when surely his wine and food would attract a lot more attention (and higher prices) in say Hyde Park or Mount Lookout he says I like the people here. They re real. And after a while you get to know the people who come in. The servers know what they want before they order. There s a neighborhood feeling. He has served on the board of the Westwood Civic Organization in past years and is active in WestCURC but he remains philosophical about the fate of the planned entertainment district. In his soft laid-back voice he says It s up in the air. If it happens great. If not that s fine too. 11 WESTWOOD Westwood United Methodist Church Mother of Mercy High School Madcap Puppets Westwood Elementary School 12 BEST THE BEST IN FINE HOMES That attitude has prevailed in Westwood almost from the start and could be seen as the secret to the neighborhood s resilience. In the late 1800s Westwood struggled to grow despite the efforts of some powerful residents most prominently James N. Gamble whose family owned Procter & Gamble. Best known as the inventor of Ivory soap Gamble played a significant role in the history of the neighborhood. He lived in a Victorian mansion on Werk Road just a short walk from the proposed entertainment district and was the force behind many a Westwood project. Although Westwood is not far from downtown steep terrain and the Mill Creek made commuting to the city center difficult back in Gamble s day. To remedy the problem he and other wealthy residents of the neighborhood supported and helped fund a railroad extension that ultimately failed. But Gamble continued to invest in Westwood and served as the village s last mayor helping to arrange for annexation by Cincinnati in 1896. The neighborhood eventually flowered and many of the handsome homes of those who followed him to the area still stand. His own 170-year-old home however was torn down in 2013 after years of battling to preserve it a fight led primarily by Greg and Liz Kissel and the Westwood Historical Society. This defeat however didn t set the resilient community back for long. Today things are buzzing in Westwood more than ever. One of the organizations building that buzz is Westwood Works. To find out more about their efforts I head out of the winery and down a couple of tree-lined blocks to the Westwood branch library a tidy art deco structure built in 1930. Kathy Bach is the manager there and she and her husband Rick Boyd helped found Westwood Works back in 2008. We raised our children here. It s a great walking neighborhood. And it s a great dog-walking neighborhood. Though resting comfortably nearby on the hardwood floor of the beautiful dining room Emmy their black lab surely must agree. We ve met so many of our neighbors that way. Vanessa and her husband Rick love the neighborhood so much they ve lived here for 40 years. Their five-bedroom home on Beechwood Avenue is their third in North Avondale. One of their two sons both grown and married owns a home here. It s hard to leave this neighborhood Vanessa says. We have so many friends here. We re really going to miss it. It s very special. And it s easy to see why she feels that way. There s no other neighborhood quite like North Avondale in Cincinnati. The handsome expansive homes many of them built in the early decades of the 20th century stand on spacious property and reflect an elegant era in the city s history. The well-to-do began living here back when people regularly used terms like well-to-do. And the term well kept doesn t begin to describe the obvious care owners lavish on their homes in North Avondale. After putting so much sweat equity into the place they aren t eager understandably to leave it behind. But with their sons gone they feel it s time to settle into someplace smaller. However Rick is quick to note that their home doesn t live big meaning that the rooms are cozy and comfortable. The home despite its size never feels cavernous. That s the holiday they ll best remember when they move away she adds. Their home provided the setting for many family holiday gatherings but was always the place for Thanksgiving. As an animal artist I took it to heart Be available get out in the public. I just was featured on CET PBS and am now getting calls from all over the country. John kept his 140-acre Georgetown farm after his cherished wife Judy passed away in 2011. He visits frequently and each time hikes the backwoods trails of several miles. A few years ago he purchased a condo in Mariemont where he lives most of the time and can often be seen walking through the neighborhoods and along the train tracks. John s top fan is daughter Ricki who lives in Cincinnati. I asked her about John s appeal. He is a natural people person and he s always been that way. He is always in a good mood and feeds off the energy he gets from people. But he is also a very humble man. What you see is what you get. On why his art connects so strongly with people she adds His work is honest it is how he sees life -- beautiful calming peaceful. We are very proud of him and consider every moment with him something special. BUT WHY BIRDS Because birds are the visual connection most fans have with John how and why did birds become the chosen ones The answer is surprisingly simple says John and it is likely the same reason why so many liked the art of John James Audubon. I paint for people and most of the wild animals people see are birds he says. They are diurnal out in front in their backyards. I feel very strongly attached to painting things that are appealing. While John may walk a bit slower in his trademark L.L. Bean shoes than he used to he has no intention of slowing down. In particular he still has one authentic painting he begs to do though until he actually sees the subject alive and in flight -- thought to have been extinct since the 1920s -- he won t be able to fulfill the dream. The last alleged sighting of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker was a few years ago in Florida. In January 2016 John will be visiting the Florida Panhandle for three weeks searching along the Choctawhatchee River hoping for a confirmed sighting of the bird similar to the Pileated Woodpecker a crimson-crested flyer John sees frequently on his farm. Not only is there notoriety in seeing and painting something long thought gone it is especially important to John that Gail Norton U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 2001-2006 appointed him the official painter of the real McCoys if and when they fly by. If John sees one there can no longer be any doubt that the bird lives and exactly what it looks like. Smiles were abundant to those when first making eye contact with John at his birthday celebration. He was their friend or about to be and would make them feel comfortable. Most I suspect had one or more Ruthvens on their walls and after paying him homage likely went home and took a closer look at their prized possessions. What a wonderful life John has enjoyed and shared with so many as so well articulated in so many of the 350 cards I read. What a life indeed. He works at the downtown library and says his commute takes 15 minutes -- in bad traffic. He has lived in Liberty Hill and Mt. Washington and sees Westwood as a combination of the two. You have lawns and trees and space but you re only minutes from the center of the city. Kathy s commute to the Westwood branch is even shorter of course. Most days she walks to work or rides her bike and she says people along the way say hi because they know her from the library. She and Rick agree that there s a strong sense of community here. It s not as transient as a lot of other neighborhoods Rick says. He adds with a smile And here you can watch for peak leaf season. You don t get to do that in Over-the-Rhine. He asks John sitting just a few steps away how it was he was able to re-create such a scene and make the birds feel like you could reach out and touch them. John tells him with the passion he s told hundreds before how he was fly fishing on Monture Creek in Montana when four hawks decided that a crow in the same air space was uninvited. John Aldrich Ruthven appears never too busy to tell a story to shake a hand to give an autograph to thank those -- the new ones who have just discovered him the old ones who consider him their friend -- who have made his art among the most sought after of its kind in the United States. Last November The Cincinnati Nature Center hosted a 91st birthday celebration -- a meet and greet -- to honor the man whose passion cries nature. Scheduled for two hours at 60 minutes past that the CNC staff decided to walk John out to his car to wave to the nearly 100 visitors still in the receiving line and to hear them sing Happy Birthday to him. Till then John hugged and graciously greeted hundreds of others most of them handing him a homemade birthday card or a theme-appropriate store-bought kind a bird being the usual subject. OH MY GOSH John says this frequently a master in connecting with people usually in Dad-like tones welcoming them into his space. They ve come to hear first-hand about what subject he s painting next to listen about his search for the supposed long-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker how he expresses such an exacting detail in each of his works about presenting four U.S. Presidents portraits of his favorite -- The Bald Eagle and how he became a good friend with one of the world s most famous persons. Though exact opposites in how they approached celebrity-ism John and Neil Armstrong understood that to be called best at what they do it meant doing their best getting there. It was clear on this crisp November day that John is the nicest most honest sincere and most genuine celebrity these folks have likely ever met the one person they d most like to enjoy dinner with. And while some might think John only a regional celebrity the list of National Medal of Arts winners including John in 2004 is quite small. Not everybody gets to visit the Oval Office have a medal hung around their neck and shake the President s hand. To paint the official Ohio interpretation of Armstrong s landing on the moon.
