Shareef Malnik had been kind enough to open the doors to his Miami Beach steakhouse The Forge for a cover and feature shoot that would capture the love between the restaurateur and his ridiculously beautiful wife actress Gabrielle Anwar. On the surface the situation seemed well in hand. We had determined our shot locations inside the iconic restaurant. Our stylist had pulled a pair of flowing Etro dresses for Anwar which she adored. And the happy couple appeared ready to roll. There was one problem We didn t have a photographer. He was somewhere on the other side of town stuck in one of those bumper-to-bumper nightmares that can turn a Zen master into a raging New York cab driver inside of 30 seconds. I knew we were in trouble when I found our creative director Melanie Smit pacing outside the restaurant oblivious to a late-afternoon downpour. In her own Zen-like way she may have been begging the traffic gods to smile on us. They did. We re not exactly sure how photographer James Woodley reached The Forge in the nick of time-- and to be clear we don t condone whatever rules of the road he broke to make it happen. We just know that in an instant he had set up his camera and established a rapport with our gracious hosts as it turns out James and Gabrielle were born at the same hospital in England. Go figure. What makes our cover story even more special is that it s part of a new chapter in Lifestyle history. As you page through this August issue you ll notice a host of fresh editorial elements--from our ode to South Florida at its over-the-top best (The Splurge) to an expanded dining section to our insider s guide to some of the tri-county area s most compelling neighborhoods (Day Tripper). And much more. Our special thanks to Shareef and Gabrielle for sharing their love story in our pages--and also to our loyal readers and advertisers for joining us on this editorial adventure. Enjoy the August issue of Lifestyle. He s had soccer moms rush the stage and rip open his leather jacket and 80-year-old women grab his behind. But despite the hazards of honoring Elvis Presley for a living the Broward native admits that it s still good to be the King. Every night I go on that stage I have the greatest time of my life says MacDonald who performs Memories of Elvis shows from coast to coast throughout the year. From the beginning I ve viewed this as a gift. It s a gift that the one-time football star at Coral Springs High School treats with great respect--especially given that in the early 1990s he was cutting grass for a living. But on a fateful Halloween night he dressed as Presley and caught the eye of a celebrity lip-syncing performer. It turned out that MacDonald could do more than curl his lip and swivel his hips his rich baritone naturally aligned with Elvis unique sound. By 1998 his days running a lawn maintenance business were history. On the eve of his annual South Florida performance to commemorate Elvis death (Aug. 16 1977) the only tribute artist hired by Elvis Presley Enterprises to perform at Graceland s Heartbreak Hotel reflects on his unexpected career. A little less conversatioN You see some guys who sound like they have marbles in their mouths when they re talking to you like Elvis. ... I put a lot of me in the tribute. If I don t feel comfortable doing certain movements or vocal stuff that s too over the top I won t do it. This is a natural show. It s not a hokey impersonation. Welcome to my world It s humbling that fans enjoy the show enough to come up and tell me their story. One man brought me photos that he took with Elvis in Germany he was in the military with him. That s what it s all about--sharing memories of Elvis. That s all right I was doing a sound check in Memphis and singing Can t Help Falling in Love. This nicely dressed older lady walks up and asks if I was lip-syncing. I told her no that we were doing a show later that night. She goes That s incredible--and I should know. I was Elvis [mother-in-law]. It was Priscilla Presley s mom. Sometimes he speeds along the calm Middle River or for a bigger challenge he ll go up against the waves in Port Everglades. Smart recently finished a challenge on social media where he competed against other paddle enthusiasts to log 500 miles in 100 days. The Wilton Manors resident isn t just passionate about the watersport most view as a leisure activity-- he s a professional. Smart is part of a worldwide paddleboard team sponsored competitively by NSPSurftech which includes teammates from Australia and France who are ranked in the top five in the world. That people are taking stand-up paddleboarding or SUP so seriously should come as no surprise. Last year The Outdoor Foundation released A Wilton Manors resident joins the ranks of competitive paddleboarding a report that estimated that 2.8 million Americans almost 1 percent of the population were active SUP participants--a 30.5 percent increase over a three-year period. For Smart a fitness director at Lauderdale Yacht Club the passion started with an invite from a club member. He was a fit guy he told me that since he started SUP he hadn t been going to the gym that much Smart says. The club member was into competitive paddleboard racing. I got hooked the first time I [did the] racing style. This isn t the slow stroke kind of paddling. Smart offers some additional insights into the sport that has changed his life. WHY HE DOES IT Smart originally from Salt Lake City found that paddleboarding encompassed everything he needed to keep in top shape. It s the best all-around body exercise that you can get. It s a great back and leg workout he says. Smart does 7-mile paddles at least four times a week he logs shorter 3-mile workouts on two other days. WHERE HE DOES IT The water into which Smart drops his paddleboard depends on the kind of workout he wants that day. For smooth fast cardio training he ll careen down the Middle River just 10 feet from his house. For race training it s the Intracoastal Waterway or Port Everglades. Port Everglades is like a washing machine. The water has been bouncing off the sea walls and it s coming from all different directions. TIPS FOR BEGINNERS Start in calm water. Shareef Ted Baker vest and pants and Whistles shirt Bloomingdale s Aventura Mall LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2016 47 here was almost no chance Shareef Malnik would have met Gabrielle Anwar if not for an organic farm and what he calls the strangest twist of fate. It was early February 2010. The owner of The Forge the famous Miami Beach steakhouse was at Paradise Farms in Homestead sourcing items for a new menu the Burn Notice actress was there on the same night celebrating her birthday over a vegan dinner. If Gabrielle had met me at The Forge in that environment she would have had a different depiction of who I was Malnik says. I m certain there would have been some prejudgment. Since I was at an organic farm she probably figured that I was OK. Anwar chimes in I would have never gone to the steakhouse. Malnik completes the round robin And I would have never met her at a yoga class in Coconut Grove where the couple now live. There is a vibrant energy around the two a relationship that puts a capital F in fun an equal partnership that allows each person to maintain his or her own interests. The story of how Malnik captured Anwar s heart is one of those fly-on-the-wall Miami nightlife insider stories complete with food flamenco and intrigue. The way the pair tells it makes it all the more the stuff of storybook romance. After being introduced by a mutual friend while walking into Paradise Farms Malnik says he had to figure out a way to speak with the actress again. He set his sights on approaching her while she was having dinner. I knew if I didn t go over to her at that moment that I would never see her again for the rest of my life he says. Since he had learned that she was celebrating her birthday it was a perfect entry point. That meant she was an Aquarius and I am an Aquarius he says. The restaurateur had created an annual tradition at The Forge--an Aquarius party for those born under the same sign--but he had postponed it that year because The Forge was undergoing renovations. Yet in that moment the party was on again. I told Gabrielle that I was thinking of having the Aquarius party anyway. And she said Great I ll throw the party with you. T Anwar interrupts the story Honey you are forgetting the most exciting part which was that I started to argue with you about who gives the best party. Little did I know that this man was known for being a notorious party thrower. And here I am thinking I ll plan a quick visit to Target --she pronounces it tarjay-- to pick up some votive candles. Malnik says he called his chef immediately to announce that plans should begin for the Aquarius party. We were closed and under construction. The chef was new and he hadn t even cooked at The Forge yet. But I told the staff Do whatever you need to do. Build a tent on the construction site. Malnik did his research. He found out that Anwar who tangoed with Al Pacino in a memorable scene from the 1992 movie Scent of a Woman loved flamenco dancing so he created the theme around it. I did everything in red with Spanish-style food and wine he says. There was one hiccup. Anwar was told she could invite whomever she wanted since the party was to be a joint effort. She called me the day of the party Malnik recalls and said Would you mind if I invited my ex-husband Of course I held the phone away from my mouth and let out (an expletive). Then I got back on the phone and said Of course your ex-husband can come. I figured then whatever happens happens. If worse comes to worse I will have made a great new friend in Gabrielle. Anwar explains the reason for the invitation She and her ex actor John Verea share the same birthday. I was trying to think of Aquarians I could invite she says. But all s well that ends well. In only four days the party materialized. Malnik hired a flamenco dancer-- an older woman who spoke of love he says--and had Anwar s name printed on the menus along with other small touches. But Malnik says it took a little time for his honored guest to realize that the party had been created just for her. At some point I think a light bulb went on he says. She confesses It was when the birthday cake came my way with only my name on it. The cake was red velvet by the way. After that she kind of looked at me a different way Malnik says. 48 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM Wishes Come True Malnik and Anwar support Make-AWish with an annual extravaganza Gabrielle Anwar had her own favorite charities before she met Shareef Malnik but his dedication to Make-A-Wish now has her in a recurring role. She s going on her sixth year as celebrity auctioneer at the annual Make-AWish Ball at the InterContinental Miami set for Nov. 12 (visit sfla.wish.org for details). Each year the couple help create the fundraising event s theme. Witness the just-forlaughs YouTube video of the pair rehearsing at the Miami City Ballet for the 2012 event. She whipped me into shape to dance in front of the crowd and it was a good eight weeks Malnik says. Eight weeks to get me to look at least OK next to her--a professional dancer. Another year it was a Wizard of Oz theme. I played the wizard and was hiding underneath her dress he says. The year before I got to saw her in half--which was definitely my idea. One of the gala s traditions has been for Anwar and Malnik to open the night s festivities with a creative and dramatic moment. The 2015 gala with a Greek mythology theme featured the Miami Gay Men s Chorus wearing white and red togas with golden laurel leaves behind their ears singing lyrics written by Anwar. This year s theme is La Nuit de L Animale (The Night of Animals). We re planning plenty of surprises Anwar promises. Make-A-Wish arranges morale-boosting experiences called wishes for children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Soon after Malnik became chairman of the ball in 2004 his younger brother Jarod--who was 6 at the time--was diagnosed with leukemia. He became eligible for a wish Malnik says. Jarod s was to throw a strike over home plate at Boston s Fenway Park during a Red Sox game. He did it and got a standing ovation. Today Jarod is 18 and cancer-free. I think this happening to my family gave me more empathy for the Wish families and reinforced my commitment to Make-A-Wish says Malnik who since becoming chairman has helped raise the gala s profits from 300 000 to last year s 2.25 million. It s such a positive charity he says. You re making people feel good today as opposed to hoping that the money you give will help someone feel good some day in the future. Since recently moving to Coconut Grove the two spend what little free time they have together zipping around the Grove on their Vespas and partaking in one of the family s favorite sports paddleboarding. Malnik is stepfather to Anwar s three children Willow Anwar 22 who lives in California and is working as a personal assistant to actress Lisa Bonet and her actor husband Jason Mamoa Hugo Verea 15 and Paisley Verea 12. That s when Gabrielle Anwar hung up her weapons as Fiona Glenanne one of the stars of the series. Once the seven-year span of playing a bikini-clad high-heel-wearing gun-toting terrorist came to a halt I was able to have some oxygen and then say There s a lot I want to say and a lot of it isn t involving gun violence and my ass. So now I m in a position thanks to my extraordinary husband who has been nothing but supportive. She s taken a position behind the camera as director and co-producer for her documentary Sexology and as writer and co-creator for the website sexology. com. Meeting Malnik she says gave her the freedom to step away from acting. Anwar shares some thoughts on the industry with Lifestyle. On no longer acting I don t have to be on a hamster wheel of employment Anwar shoots straight about celebrity aging and much more and it coincided with middle age. With every wrinkle that sprouted on my face I didn t want to hate myself. So it s just been the most perfect transition into the appreciation of aging where I wasn t in such a scrutinous environment that I was going to resent every future moment of my life. On celebrity The pedestal that celebrities are sort of lifted onto by a crane being the entertainment industry is absolutely ludicrous to me. And yet we look up to these characters with such awe and reverence. I question what on earth they have done to earn such worship On aging In my 20s when I could get away with half the outfits that I recently retired from my closet I would have nothing to say. Now I actually do but I m losing respect because of the simplest most superficial reason of my appearance. I find it appalling. I feel like now I m being fed this fountain and it s not the fountain of youth because that s not my interest anymore. It s the fountain of life. work and Mondays I don t work at night. Those are sacrosanct and reserved for family. The couple also has been working together on a pet project of Anwar s Sexology a documentary and companion website which she s created in partnership with actress Catherine Oxenberg. The two have a quest according to the website to bring to light the intricate and infinite world of female sexuality. Malnik who served as executive producer couldn t have been happier to be a part of the project. Gabrielle had this great idea but she needed someone who could help her with a business plan and funding he says. That s where I came in. Tariq Anwar Gabrielle s father and a two-time Oscar-nominated editor (for The King s Speech and American Beauty ) edited the film. She says the documentary is finished and is ready to be revealed although no release date has been announced. I think it s going to serve a lot of women a very delicious meal. On one side are the team s five rules Be on time don t do drugs make good decisions respect others and compete. On the flip side is a reminder from Charlie Partridge to get out when confronted with a situation that could embarrass or hurt the program. That s what real men do says Partridge who begins his third season at the helm when FAU hosts Southern Illinois on Sept. 3. The childish thing is to stay and engage. SOLOMON LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA has an easy time preserving its beachside charm and boutiquey ebb and flow. The entire town steeped in mid-century modern architecture is only 1.5 square miles. There isn t a Starbucks or chain restaurant on its strip of East Commercial Boulevard. And though its surrounding neighbors dot the beachside with high-rise condos Lauderdale-By-The-Sea restricts buildings to no more than four stories. This is just part of the allure of the Great American Beach Town--a slice of South Florida rich in character where mom-and-pop restaurants and stores still thrive. If you haven t visited in a while it s time for a day trip. GRAB LUNCH Before there was a sub-shop chain on every corner churning out pick-your-own topping sandwiches LaSpada s Original Hoagies was creating the kind of piled-high meat sandwiches that many Florida transplants grew up with up North. A local get-it-to-go must for four decades LaSpada s is as much about the show as it is the mammoth hoagies. A new one was built in 1963 lengthened by nearly 100 feet and widened to 20 feet. Regulars know where to fish for certain catch. Beginning of pier whiting and snapper. Middle pompano snapper tarpon cobia bluefish and mackerel. Middle to end the other fish mentioned plus kingfish. The pier is always open for fishing with a 2 charge to walk it. Amenities for the property which range in price from the 700 000s include a two-story oceanfront clubhouse The Sea Club which offers residents a fitness-cardio center resort pool spa and private cabanas. They hold glossy promotional photos and DVD copies of the 2011 movie Soul Surfer for her to autograph many of them when the time comes will throw their arms around Bethany Hamilton s waist and hug her like she s family. As the special meet-and-greet draws to a close the professional surfer who lost her arm to a shark attack at age 13 ducks into a back room to check on her nearly 1-year-old son Tobias (with husband Adam Dirks). When asked what it means to her to spend time with children like the ones from Joe DiMaggio especially now that she s a parent Hamilton doesn t hesitate. Seeing those faces light up reminds me that I m here for a reason she says. Hamilton s inspirational story of faith and perseverance--chronicled in a 2004 New York Times best-seller upon which the feature film Soul Surfer was based--has elevated the champion surfer into a motivational league all her own. In conjunction with Cobian s Every Step Matters tour she spent the rest of her recent South Florida visit with a gathering of rain-soaked fans at BC Surf & Sport in Fort Lauderdale which sells her limited-edition sandal collection by Cobian. Hamilton 26 spoke to Lifestyle about her message and why it continues to resonate around the world. What does the concept of Every Step Matters mean to you In life we re constantly choosing our next step our next direction. I hold to my values and that really influences my steps. But whether I m speaking to someone of the same faith or not I want to encourage people that they don t have to live this way or that way to be cool or to be beautiful. As young cancer survivors [the children from Joe DiMaggio] have a different life than they may have imagined. But today you saw [certain children] encouraging other kids with cancer to stay hopeful and positive. I want to encourage people in their day-to-day steps to just be their own beautiful self--and stick to the things that they re passionate about. You seem to connect with people in a way that transcends the inherent drama of your story. Why I think we all go through tough times. Hearing stories about overcoming a hardship can be encouraging for all of us. In this room today there were young children going through so much at a young age. I had the same thing. At 13 my arm was gone--and with it I thought my future was gone too. I m sure some of these kids feel like their life is a constant struggle. Just being able to be real with them perhaps is a reminder of hope. 56 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2016 57 travel The main pool is an oasis unto itself. Enticed--I m a kid at heart--I quickly changed into my swimsuit for a brief adrenaline boost before lazing in the inconspicuous grotto area. For those interested in some exercise a scenic 1.5-mile running trail wraps around the property--but I was on vacation and relaxation was my top priority. To that end a visit to the west tower and the fullservice spa--offering everything from scrubs and facials to manicures pedicures and massages--is a must. For full-body healing try the signature Aromatherapy Escape & Wrap. With herbal tea in hand I enjoyed the deluxe treatment which begins with an exfoliating footbath followed by an aromatherapy massage and a light wrap that boosts the body s absorption of essential oils. (I chose citrus with the fresh scent of lemon and orange.) A chill-inducing scalp massage puts the finishing touch on 80 minutes of pure bliss. The Orlando World Center Marriott is just three miles south of Walt Disney World--but it feels as far from the House of Mouse as you can get. The hotel a cluster of four towering buildings wastes no time making an impression. The vibe--chic cleanlined and absent of extravagant artwork and overdone production--speaks to the more sophisticated audiences to which it caters (couples singles and corporate travelers). After checking in I skimmed the enormous lobby--it was free of theme-park paraphernalia another tipoff that we were in for more of an adult getaway. There were signs pointing in every direction toward the resort s many amenities. We stayed in the one-bedroom suite spacious with a separate living room and kitchen area and double patio. To kick it up a notch (especially with larger parties) spring for the 4 000-square-foot International Suite. World Center further distinguishes itself with Hawk s Landing Golf Club featuring a lush 6 600-yard par-71 layout a golf academy run by teaching pro Bill Madonna and the Hawk s Landing Steakhouse & Grille (open for dinner). The Food Speaking of dining World Center offers six primary restaurants and a food court covering a variety of culinary options--including Japanese cuisine at Mikado bar fare at High Velocity and a noteworthy continental breakfast buffet at Solaris. The main foodie attraction is Siro Urban Italian Kitchen. Even with an inventive menu including items such as lamb belly and broiled squab the staff wasn t afraid to take on new challenges. Since I tend to eat mostly plants the first dish for me was a plate of ice-cold cantaloupe layered with basil from the restaurant s herb garden--simple but genius. Do not leave Siro without trying the tomato tartare (I raved about this for hours into the night). Farm-to-glass cocktails can be paired with specific dishes an olive oil aperitif for example was served with the pre-meal salumi board and Italian bread. If you order dessert at any of the restaurants know that each pastry tart cookie freshly churned gelato and sorbet is made on-site--nothing is imported. customers happy with a menu of frozen drinks topped with fresh fruit. Indoors High Velocity s beaming red and blue lights mimic that of a sports arena. The bar s extensive craft beer list is worth checking out if you re interested in a casual setting or looking to catch the big game (the bar is loaded with flat-screen televisions). One of my favorite beverages was from the lobby bar. At Dining at Siro the bartender s suggestion I tasted a signature cocktail made with cucumber and lavenderinfused vodka garnished with edible flower petals. Perfect for a pre-dinner drink or a late-night libation the open-yet-intimate bar area drew a crowd each night. Don t Miss Treat yourself to the poolside Light Up the Night laser show. We re asked what makes us unique--and it s tough to answer in a [sound bite] says Lerman the restaurant s executive chef. We re not the most expensive so we re approachable and casual. It s fine dining but not in the white-tablecloth sense. We re modern American because the flavors of America are from all over the world--but Stephanie is Panamanian so she brings that to the menu. ... We re just different. The same can be said for the young newlyweds (both in their mid-20s) who opened Jardin in late April. But as diners who ve sampled the restaurant s eclectic array of appetizers entr es desserts and craft cocktails can attest it s a good thing in this case that opposites attract. The two met in 2011 at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York--Lerman followed the traditional foodie path Cohen specialized in baking pastry. Before long they were more than just an item. She was the fire to his ice he was the calm to her storm. I m the sparks in our relationship Cohen says. Jordan is very soothing so he keeps me [grounded]. None of the girls I had dated to that point had her kind of passion she s passionate about everything she does Lerman says. Dating had been bland. Stephanie is the opposite of bland. It was a recipe that both felt would work as well in a business relationship as in a personal one. After gaining separate experience at renowned restaurants and bakeries in New York the couple relocated to South Florida and took kitchen positions at Rebel House in Boca Raton (he was sous chef she was executive pastry chef). In New York we would come home and talk about all the stuff that went wrong at [our respective jobs] Cohen says. When we started working together at Rebel House things never seemed to go wrong. That was the test to see if we could work with each other. For me I couldn t picture working with anyone else. Or living with anyone else. For better or worse Lerman and Cohen exchanged vows last year and also set in motion the plan that would result in Jardin. In South Florida [culinary] trends tend to lag behind Lerman says. We wanted to bring the traits 72 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM Stephanie Cohen and Jordan Lerman from restaurants we loved in New York--whether it was about the service and decor or the food and style of plating--and turn it on its head here in [Palm Beach County]. Appetizers of crispy cauliflower with maple yogurt cashews and grapes and duck chorip n a spin on the chorizo sandwich that Lerman fell in love with during a trip to Panama to meet Cohen s parents for the first time. It also means entr es such as wahoo bathed in a Mediterranean-spiced puree and pan-roasted chicken with carrot puree and snap peas. The desserts that originate in Cohen s world include a vertical doughnut tower with maple Bavarian cream chocolate glazed and candied bacon offerings--served with honey churros and orange glazed sour cream. There s even a lineup of dessert cocktails (hot chocolate cr me br l e speaks for itself) part of a wildly adventurous drink menu that like the restaurant itself defies simple description. We ve put a lot of thought and detail into each dish--right down to the brigadeiros (South American fudge truffle balls) at the very end of the meal Cohen says. We try to incorporate interesting techniques textures and flavors into all of our dishes without complicating them says Alex Becker executive chef at Kuro (1 Seminole Way Hollywood 954.327.7625). So when Ross did his final tasting with us we gave him some parameters. One of them was to create a dessert that contained gelatin. As you can imagine when he presented his panna cotta dish we instantly fell in love with him. It s a dish (officially dubbed Sesame Panna Cotta on the Kuro menu) that looks more like a galactic landscape than any dessert Sara Lee ever envisioned. Which in the end makes sense. Because when the individual elements come together--crispy seaweed sponge sesame panna cotta pomegranate foam tapioca starch ginger gel e cubes and glistening orbs of cucumber water--the results are out of this world. We wanted to make sure there are no two bites that are exactly alike Becker says but at the same time they all make sense. Becker offers some insights (opposite page) into a dessert that is much more than the sum of its parts. 74 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM PHOTO BY MICHAEL PISARRI 2. Pomegranate foam The tartness of the pomegranate is there to break up the consistency of the other flavors. 1. Sesame panna cotta This is a wonderful opportunity to use gelatin in a creamy sophisticated way Becker says. 3. Cucumber water The orbs are created with a technique called spherification we freeze the cucumber water into a sphere mold and then dip it into a bath of calcium lactate which creates a skin that holds the water. PHOTO BY MICHAEL PISARRI 5. Powder It s tapioca starch mixed with Himalayan pink salt and sesame oil. The powder is capable of holding oil up to 10 times its weight but when the oil is absorbed it changes the powder s texture. The second it touches the moisture from your mouth the powder melts away. So you re exposed to the salty sesame flavor. 4. Seaweed sponge We take nori seaweed from our sushi rolls incorporate that into a sponge cake and then dehydrate the cake to produce the crispy effect. Sesame and seaweed have been used together for hundreds of years so we knew those flavors would work well. From Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 more than 200 restaurants will participate in this discounted dining deal making a meal in Miami well worth the drive. We ve outlined this year s can t-miss offerings so you know exactly where to take a bite. Some locations offer Miami Spice deals Sunday-Thursday only be sure to call ahead. Visit miamiandbeaches.com specialoffers monthly-deals for a complete list of participants. PHOTO BY JUAN FERNANDO AYORA Pide at Byblos 76 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM Sneak a peek at a celebrity while saving dollars on your dinner Katsuya at the SLS Hotel (1701 Collins Ave. Miami Beach 305.455.2995) recently played host to Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna but the Japanese mainstay s Spice menu is even hotter than reality TV s newest it couple. With choices such as snapper ceviche Wagyu gyoza rock shrimp sushi platters and robata skirt steak you re sure to enjoy a full and unique meal. Seaspice on the Miami River (422 NW North River Drive Miami 305.440.4200) the ultrachic seafood house and favorite of David Beckham is bringing its A-game with dishes such as The Seafood Carnival which includes a selection of items such as colossal stone crab claws oysters Alaskan king crab whole Maine lobster Kaluga caviar Nigerian tiger prawns and PEI mussels. SPICE SCENE Katsuya BANG FOR YOUR BUCK These locations promise to squeeze every last penny out of that 39 Byblos (1545 Collins Ave. Miami Beach 305.508.5041) the sophisticated Eastern Mediterranean restaurant once again is making waves with its generous Spice approach. Diners may select five dishes from a menu that includes eggplant kibbeh with zucchini flowers truffle pide (like a flatbread) with buffalo mozzarella halloumi and tartufata lamb ribs with dukkah and Tomato salad at Byblos buttermilk sauce Middle Eastern fried chicken Wagyu flatiron steak and more. After dinner guests may extend the evening with cocktails and music in the newly opened Lounge at Byblos. Few things are better than fresh oysters on a hot summer day but paying 6 for each little mollusk can be painful. Enter Midtown Oyster Bar (3301 NE First Ave. Miami 786.220.2070) a local favorite from chef Pierluigi Angioi. In addition to its popular dishes--such as edamame soup with fava beans crabmeat and coconut milk--the oysters will be abundant during Spice. Lunch brings spicy oysters with fresh mango and jalape o pesto while dinner features Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer. Oysters aren t the only star here though-- entr es like squid ink tagliolini (a seafood twist on the traditional carbonara) and the pineapple shrimp make for deliciously unique dishes. When debating Spice options always consider a steakhouse because it s Spicy oyster at Midtown difficult to argue with 39 for steak and two additional items. Legendary outpost The Forge (432 W. 41st St. Miami Beach 305.538.8533) is a surefire avenue to carnivore delight. Currently under the helm of executive chef Julia Doyne (the first female chef in the restaurant s history) The Forge is rotating its Spice menu weekly. Sample items include Florida black grouper with coconut rice cashews and yellow curry yellowfin tuna tartare and of course beef--in the form of carpaccio Bolognese and more. Don t miss the grasshopper chocolate lava cake for dessert. LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2016 77 Short Takes Samosas at Talde Here s what else is happening in the foodie world this month PLAY BALL In addition to its fresh pastas and Neapolitan pizzas from wood-burning ovens Louie Bossi s in Fort Lauderdale (1032 E. Las Olas Blvd.) is drawing raves for its Tuesday night Bossi Ball tournaments. Starting at 10 p.m. guests battle for supremacy (and prizes) playing bocce on the restaurant s 2 000-square-foot piazza as they enjoy evening drink specials such as 3 Peroni beer and 5 Finlandia vodka cocktails. PASSPORT WINE SERIES The last Friday of the month is worth circling thanks to Events by Grateful Palate. The 4 000-square-foot special-event venue Fort Lauderdale catering specialist (3003 NE 32nd Ave.) has launched a new series of wine tastings with upwards of 10 offerings from specific parts of the world paired with that region s cuisine. Guests may indulge while listening to jazz and reveling in views of the Intracoastal Waterway. NEW TO SPICE Checking out a new local hotspot without paying full price is like winning a food lover s lottery Beaker and Gray (2637 N. Miami Ave. Miami 305.699.2637) has taken the Wynwood neighborhood scene by storm since its December opening. The restaurant hatched by two native South Floridians is cool from top to bottom. Exposed brick walls and throwback music set the scene for inventive food and standout cocktails. The Spice menu is a great way to explore savory tapas dishes such as pasta salad with pickled peach lemon coriander and blackened shrimp grouper tartare with red pepper cream rice noodle with pork rib huancaina and tomatillo and turkey with garlic confit pickled green apple and butternut squash. Top Chef alum Dale Talde introduced a groundbreaking concept with his new South Florida restaurant--fun unpretentious and delicious dining in Miami Beach. The panAsian Talde (The Confidante Hotel 4041 Collins Ave. Miami Beach 786.605.4094) already has scored raves for its highenergy food and atmosphere. For Spice Talde is highlighting samosas made from sweet peas kaffir lime yogurt and golden raisin chutney as an appetizer. The menu also will feature pretzel pork and chive dumplings Buddha vegan noodles Korean fried chicken with spicy kimchi yogurt and the Top Chef 5G cookie for dessert. Doral isn t known for cutting-edge dining but the new contemporary Japanese pub Dragonfly Izakaya & Fish Market (5241 NW 87th Ave. Doral 305.222.7447) is changing opinions. Thanks to the area s large corporate population Dragonfly is putting forth an exceptional lunch menu for Spice. Dishes such as crispy pig ears ceviche Wagyu short rib curry robata grilled salmon and Japanese shaved ice make for an indulgent midday meal. Dinner additions include Hamachi crudo lamb shank curry and a pork Katsu sandwich. Dragonfly 78 AUGUST 2016 LMGFL.COM YOLO BOATYARD S3 - SUN SURF SAND Incredible food. Unique atmospheres.
