But it s a secret. By Jack Heffron GETTING TO KNOW AMBERLEY VILLAGE takes more effort than you d imagine when you see it on a map of Greater Cincinnati situated pretty much right in the center. Interstates 75 and 71 cozy up not far from the western and eastern sides of the village and Ronald Reagan Highway is just a minute or two to the north. But unless you know someone who lives there someone say who has invited you to a party there s not much to draw you to the village s leafy winding suburban streets. There s no commercial district no quaint village square no retail outlets no entertainment venues and only a few small companies. If you re looking for destination spots you won t find them here. And you sense that s exactly how the residents like it. The ones I talked to about living in Amberley Village stressed the community s privacy and peacefulness its safety and seclusion despite the convenience of nearby highways. Andy Radin a villager for nearly 14 years says that first-time visitors are amazed telling him I never knew this was here. Steve Rosenzweig who moved in five years ago calls it a little undiscovered gem a well-kept secret. Tasked with blabbing profusely about that secret I had to do some investigating because like most Cincinnatians I had only a vague sense of what that secret is. I got up early on a summer Saturday googled a bit to be sure of the main streets and to get the basic facts about the place 3.5 square miles population just north of 3 500 established in April 1940. Though shorts and a t-shirt would have been fine for the sunny day I found myself putting on a button-down and long pants in case the crackerjack police force Andy and Steve told me about got suspicious of an unfamiliar car trolling slowly along the village streets. Andy said I can t say enough about how great the police force is adding that they just might be the best in the world. Steve concurred adding They re second to none. I d also been told that neighbors watch out for each other here that they keep an eye on things. If those eyes happened to notice me and inform the world-class police department I wanted to look legit. FRENCH PARK IS FIRST CLASS The one place I d heard of in Amberley was French Park on Section Road so I headed there first. The park which is actually owned by the city of Cincinnati was a gift from one of the village s august early residents Henry French a vice-president at Procter and Gamble who built his two-story red-brick Colonial Revival estate on the property in the late 1920s. The estate now hosts wedding receptions and various other events. Days before my trip to the village I found and read a book titled Amberley Village Its History and Its People published in 1990 to help commemorate the village s fiftieth anniversary. From the book I learned a bit about Mr. French. According to Judge Chase Mason Davies he was a very kind and generous person. Resident Josephine Rollman told the interviewer that Herbie was a darling person and a wonderful neighbor. Another neighbor Harold Buxton whose family had been early settlers in the area described him as a misanthropic pain in the neck [and] the older he got the more pain in the neck he got. THE MO SEE VIE 9 If French a life-long bachelor may have been perhaps a bit cranky at times his benevolent donations provided land for the 275-acre park as well as for the municipal building on Ridge Road. He unquestionably helped the village become what it is today. He even chose the name making a list of English villages that he gave to four other residents who then picked their favorites whittling the candidates to Connington and Amberley. French apparently cast the tie-breaking vote noting later that he wanted a name that would add dignity and preserve the rural atmosphere of the territory. The village began developing around the time Josephine Rollman and her husband Justin built a magnificent estate in the late 1920s. Justin owned a prosperous department store in downtown Cincinnati and the wealthy couple discovered the area we know as Amberley one day while riding horses in what then was the countryside. At that time Ridge Galbraith and Section were little more than dirt roads. The Rollman estate occupied one of the highest points in Hamilton County and the property was actually a working farm complete with cows. As the story goes one night in 1936 the Rollmans were robbed right in front of their home. The rural area had no dedicated police force relying instead on the county for protection. The incident shook the couple and their neighbors and it sparked discussion about incorporating the community. Two years later the home of their neighbor Louis Kaufman caught fire resulting in considerable damage because the area depended on fire departments arriving quickly from other communities. Thus two years after the fire the village of Amberley was founded to provide police fire and other services to its growing population. A happy-looking couple strolled along with their ballcapped boy. A pair of women jogged past. The tranquility people had described to me was more than apparent. Green well-manicured rolling hills festooned with oaks and maples and various evergreens a cardinal trilling a tune. I even spotted a deer. A short while later the village police spotted me. Or at least I think they did. Right past the soccer and baseball fields a hive of brightly uniformed kids and their cheering parents I turned into what I mistook for the entrance and found myself on a short narrow private drive. A minute later a black police car turned in behind me. Given that there were only maybe a half-dozen homes on the street it seemed somewhat unlikely that both the officer and I had business to attend to there. I quickly veered into a driveway backed out and headed back to the main road. The patrol car didn t follow me. Surely my imagination was getting the better of me. Surely. DIVERSE IN SO MANY WAYS And if the situation were not merely coincidence I could have just explained that I was there to investigate the well-kept secret of the village itself. But woe be unto he who is there for purposes more nefarious because the roads of Amberley are not kind to fast getaways. The neighborhoods are crazy with cul-de-sacs. No doubt by design. Many streets end with the standard half-circle others with a tighter crescent and some pretty much just stop requiring a bit of maneuvering to turn around and head back the way you came. Beyond my (probably imagined) brush with the law the tour of the village was a delight. The diversity of architecture is simply stunning even in the newer subdivisions. You see everything from sprawling ranch homes to fascinating Mid-Century Moderns to elegant older estates to spectacular mansions. Some homes date back to the thirties and earlier while others showcase the village s building booms in the 1960s and 1990s. The lots usually are large set back from the street and feature plenty of greenery. There s even a home here designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Built for Gerald B. Tonken a local Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealer the home was completed in 1956. It was one of the last homes Wright SEE THE MO VIE 11 AMBERLEY VILLAGE Amberley Village is the home of Jose and Cora Garcia (this page). Built in 1954 it is one of dozens of MidCentury Modern-styled homes in the area and features a spacious courtyard between two wings. Jose once a project architect for well-known designer Michael Graves is the owner of Jose Garcia Design. The spectacular Tudor Revival mansion certainly looks worthy of royalty but a typical guest probably has no idea what he means. Fred goes on to tell the story of a Cincinnati produce magnate named Stephen Gerrard. Hope Miller joins in correcting a few of Fred s details. It s a story they ve obviously told many guests since they bought the North Avondale estate in 2001. A poor farm kid from Cherry Grove Gerrard lifted himself from selling fruits and vegetables on a downtown street corner to a captain of his industry in the early decades of the 20th century. He was one of the first to make use of refrigerated train cars shipping cantaloupes from Colorado to the Midwest and Northeast thus his sobriquet. He also was instrumental in the development of refrigerated trucks. By 1915 when he completed the home he was quite wealthy and perhaps due to his humble beginnings he wanted everybody to know about it. He built it to look as big as possible Hope says. It was built to be impressive. She then points out that From outside it looks bigger than it is. It s actually a very manageable house. The limestone structure towering chimneys and slate roof complete with stone gargoyles give the 7 000-square-foot 15-room mansion a baronial air especially when approaching from the street but once inside visitors don t feel overwhelmed. The rooms are ample in size but the beautiful dark woodwork gives them a pleasant coziness. The Millers go on to explain that Gerrard lost his fortune in the Stock Market crash in 1929 and he passed away in 1935. The home changed hands a few times and finally fell into disrepair until 1989 when new owners completed a major renovation. The result of their efforts earned coverage in Better Home and Gardens magazine. By then the home was also on the National Register of Historic Places. Since then the Millers have updated the kitchen and bathrooms and refinished some of the hardwood floors but mostly says Hope they ve just had a lot of fun with it. 17 FEATURED HOME SEE THE MO NORTH AVONDALE Photo by Helen Adams VIE 18 BEST Fun includes raising their daughter Hayleigh enjoying the pool entertaining their ten grandchildren and hosting a whole lot of parties from small family barbeques to large fundraising events. It s a great place to entertain says Hope because it s so flexible. Everybody thinks it s fun to be here and kids love it. One of their favorite memories is the modern mystery party they hosted adding that the house with its many unique features provided an ideal setting. The showstopper however is the music room (see cover) which was added to the mansion in 1929 mere months before Gerrard lost his fortune. It was a gift from the Cantaloupe King to his Queen his wife Estelle who was a music teacher. When you enter through marble columns and down a couple of marble steps and onto a parquet floor you feel like you ve stepped into a scene from The Great Gatsby. A nearly 30-foot arched ceiling towers above you. On one wall stands a magnificent white marble fireplace. On the other wall the centerpiece is an elaborate pipe organ. When the Kimball organ was installed it was the largest in a private residence in America Hope says. Behind ornate woodwork the pipes reside on the far wall of the room. Designed by Jules Brys especially for the Gerrards the organ Hope adds is truly a work of art. Now retired from his career as a sales rep for industrial equipment Fred played drums for many years in a wedding band and retains his love of music. This room they agree was more than he could resist. He came around the corner into this room and the house-hunting was over Hope recalls with a smile. Fred merely nods and raises his arms to present the room as if no further explanation were needed. The Millers agree that leaving such a home behind is bittersweet but they might miss their North Avondale neighborhood even more. I ve lived in a lot of neighborhoods says Hope who grew up in Savannah Georgia but this is by far the best. The quiet curving streets and stately homes emanate the charm of an earlier time but the Millers say it s the people that make it such a special place. They especially appreciate the diversity of ages and backgrounds and interests of their neighbors who run the gamut of professions from judges to artists. It s a tight-knit community says Hope. People are out and about walking their dogs and you get to know them. These are people who live very intentionally. They have things that they re passionate about whether it s art or politics or whatever. They are not people who are drifting through life. And that s the type of person who they foresee as the next owners. The people who buy this home will be someone who doesn t want a house like everybody else says Hope. If you want a common McMansion this is not the place for you. With Fred retired and Hayleigh recently graduated from college and heading to an outof-town job the Millers say it s time for them to find a smaller place. They plan to do more traveling and says Fred to enjoy their golden years. It s time to put our attention to other things he says. It just more house than we need. Steven Gerrard built the home to last and if his rags-to-riches story didn t exactly have a happy ending he did leave behind quite a legacy one that continues to be a place of pride for the city the neighborhood and for whomever lives there next. The original six Watch Hill estates which include the home at 742 were developed in the 1930s by builders Kopf and Kopf one of the first high-end developers of Cincinnati s far eastern suburbs. Henry just came around the corner of the house walked up on the porch offered me a big wave like he was hailing a taxicab and took a seat. Tank well that was a different story all around. My daughter brought him home and immediately he reminded me of someone who had been very important to me for a short time in my life. He had the same eyes the same demeanor and when he sat across the room looking at me I couldn t help but think a longlost soul had returned. Henry and I hit it off in a hurry kindred spirits my wife says. He was quiet one minute loose and a little crazy the next. With Tank it took a little time before we became friends. He had some trust issues but now a year later the three of us are very close. We are in the current vernacular tight. But I best explain. Henry is a four-year-old little boy. He has big brown eyes and rosy cheeks. He smiles all the time and he counts on me to explain things to him like well let s see. One summer day I was sitting on the porch reading a book he showed up with a stick in his hand and walked up beside me. What ya doin Mitta Hoard he said. I closed the book and said I m reading Henry. It s a mystery. I really like mysteries. This guy his name is Elmore Leonard. He s one of my favorites. He laughed. L mo he said. L mo that a funny name. He stepped closer and took the book from my hand. He looked at the pages for a moment then looked at me most curiously. What readin he said. I had forgotten how disarming how challenging and delightful conversations with a four-year-old often are. Well I said let me see. You read the words. The words tell you a story . . . At that point I gave up. Tell ya what Henry let s play treasure hunt. He smiled and clapped his hands together. He claps his hands as if he is playing the cymbals. That a good idea he said. I get the pennies and the frashright. He now knows where everything is in my house even has his choice of bathrooms. Regardless of the urgency he may feel he refuses to use the pink bathroom. That he says fo gir s. Instead he goes to the green guest bathroom because he told me some time ago he found a golf club standing in the corner Jus my size. And before you ask I have no idea how the putter found its way to that place. As for Tank he is now a two-year-old long and lanky tomcat a handsome devil who seems keenly aware of his extreme good looks. He is the Brad Pitt of cats. He is all white with gray spots You see about a year ago Time and Nature came along and said I m in charge and after all this time I m taking some things back. 57 LAST WORDS He now knows where everything is in my house even has his choice of bathrooms. His eyes are emerald and he has a gray spot right on top of his head which makes him look as if he is wearing a yarmulke. He was a foundling not yet weaned when my daughter found him alone and abandoned in a garage. She could fit him in the palm of her hand and with the help of a friend she nursed him to health. She had tiny baby bottles and little blankets. She did research online and made visits to the vet to find out what to do. She named him Tiberius and where in hell that name came from I have no idea but when her friendship hit the rocks the handsome cat came to our house where because of his size but mostly his presence he became and remains Tank. I don t know how it happened but in short order Tank began to follow me around the house and join me on the porch while I had my morning coffee. Then one morning I woke up and there he was stretched out from hip to knee right beside me an occurrence my wife did not meet enthusiastically. Now hardly a day passes that some portion is not spent with Henry and Tank the Tomcat and when they re not around there s a gap that s as difficult to explain as it is unmistakable. You see about a year ago Time and Nature came along and said I m in charge and after all this time I m taking some things back. Details are not important because there are people who have suffered and endured far more than I did. But after a lifetime of gifts and freedom of movement the world was different. I heard words and phrases I never believed I would hear inoperable degenerative and the topper the sentence uttered quietly but directly by a compassionate specialist. Walking will never be your friend again he said. Standing for long periods of time will be difficult. My family wife Cindy sons John and Joe and daughter Megan were wonderful and supportive through it all but in the darkest days Tank and Henry came along. Tank walked around the house with me when each step was a challenge. Henry sat with me on the couch and out on the porch. He led me to do a little more with each visit and still does. Tank greets me each morning with a nudge and waits for his snack while the coffee is brewing. The treatments and medication helped me but I know down deep that Henry and Tank the Tomcat provided a kind of remedy that I desperately needed. I dearly miss taking long walks by the river with my wife and playing catch with the kids or hitting tennis balls. I wish that I could walk the golf course searching for a lost ball as I did so many times in the past. Those treasures are gone except for the memories. But now I have something else.
