Alfred Oglesby was a nose tackle with the Miami Dolphins in 1992. Early in training camp Oglesby no-showed for a morning practice touching off a chain of events that had police conducting an investigation--and teammates fearing the worst. When Oglesby finally appeared early that evening he told reporters that two men had abducted him at gunpoint and forced him to drive 9 miles before setting him free and stealing his car. It took him all night and morning to walk and hitchhike back to the apartment where he was staying. By then the beat writers covering the team--myself included--already had established that Oglesby spent much of the prior evening at a Miami strip club. Beyond that no one was buying that it took a professional athlete the better part of 12 hours to navigate less than 10 miles. The original story quickly fell apart. Oglesby who died in 2009 sheepishly recanted the fabrication he had passed out at a friend s apartment after a night of drinking. Worried about losing his job he concocted the story to avoid head coach Don Shula s wrath. The lie of course only made it worse. Shula revoked stay-at-home privileges and forced the team to live in student housing at St. Thomas University for the remainder of training camp. A week later several of Oglesby s teammates exacted their revenge. They grabbed him in the middle of a payphone call carried the 280-pounder to a nearby oak tree-- and bound him to the trunk using duct tape. That incident occurred during my first few weeks covering the Dolphins for Gannett News Service. Over the next decade as a sportswriter I continued to write about the team for regional and national publications. But as much as I look back on those years with great fondness I d be lying as well if I didn t confess that the fashion stars of our cover story--Miami Dolphins cheerleaders Allison Agustina and Britt--were far easier on the eyes than any sweat-soaked player I ever interviewed after a game. Beverage director James Camp plans to follow his kitchen maestro s lead and create specialty libations that complement the dishes Pera features seasonally. Simply put we want to mimic and preserve the integrity of Chef Gavin s food says Camp who s been with the restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale (1 N. Threads running through the summer early-fall slate of cocktails include a vegetable-to-glass concept (Celery Moscow Mule) and an emphasis on tropical flavors (The Passionate Coco with coconut rum pineapple juice and passion fruit syrup). But the drink that most piques our interest is the brainchild of Burlock mixologist Luke Tullos a New Orleans native who has added to the legend of a Big Easy original Southern Comfort--the liqueur invented by a French Quarter bartender Martin Heron in 1874. As part of his Southernmost Comfort recipe Tullos concocted a homemade version of the liqueur using Mellow Corn whiskey to which he adds a little fruit juice and froth as well as another beverage with a 19th-century style--Pepsi 1893. LMGFL.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 19 A t play Beach Bliss W A Lighthouse Point resident creates a mindclearing meditation movement hat started for Shelly Tygielski on a mountaintop in Geneva has become a life-changing practice for people throughout Broward County. Studying abroad as a graduate student at Columbia University Tygielski raised an Orthodox Jew would find a quiet spot to study her daily prayers. She noticed a Japanese couple with a similar ritual but they sat crosslegged and didn t say a word. Intrigued she befriended them and asked about meditation. The practice would become a fundamental part of her life in ways she never initially imagined--including as relief for uveitis an inflammatory eye tissue disease that threatens vision (flare-ups can be triggered by stress). Last November the Lighthouse Point resident invited 12 friends who were going through some difficult times-- divorce health issues different situations --to meditate with her on Hollywood Beach and clear their minds. The weather was so blustery that they couldn t meditate on the beach so the group ended up near the parking lot at Hollywood North Beach Park--and sat in dirt. I thought This is terrible. No one will ever want to show up again. But they did the following Sunday--and they brought friends. Now we ve amassed this huge gathering from people with tattoos all over their bodies to Hasidic Jews to women and men struggling with their weight who would never want to step into a yoga studio. Anyone can join Tygielski s free meditation which starts at 8 30 a.m. each Sunday at the park (3601 N. Ocean Drive). Some weeks hundreds of people show up. Many of those who attend call themselves the sand tribe. WHY SHE DOES IT Being able to teach other people how to meditate isn t really about the process of clearing my mind but filling my heart. HOW IT S CHANGED HER LIFE Tygielski who had been with Fortune 500 companies for 20 years stepped down in July from her position as president of a security guard company where she oversaw 3 000 employees. I worked up from a cubicle to breaking the glass ceiling in an industry that is mostly male dominated. She plans to travel the country with her creation America Meditates a 90-minute interactive workshop that she says will introduce as many people as possible to meditation and mindfulness. THIS MONTH Broward Meditates is at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sept. 18 with sessions at 3 and 6 p.m. Cost is 20. --MICHELLE F. KYBOE watches showed off its unique brand of bright artistic timepieces to fashionistas from around the world when the Boca Raton-based company held a show that merged models and mechanics inside the Funkshion tent. Originally founded in the Netherlands by best friends Dick Sijmons and Kees de Bru ne--whose designs were inspired by their country s famous tulips fields--KYBOE quickly took off with a European following. The watch line s bold and colorful designs struck a chord with trendsetters from St. Tropez to Ibiza as well as celebrities like singer Sean Paul and Instagram star Rocky Barnes. When production could no longer keep pace with demand Sijmons and de Bru ne partnered with investor Marc Bell. As the new CEO of KYBOE the Boca resident set up a large headquarters last year one that included departments for marketing sales design finance and more. Not only did the new location work well for Bell personally (he runs the private equity firm Marc Bell Capital out of Boca) the product seems to have been tailor-made for the South Florida lifestyle. LMGFL.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 39 L I F E lessons ON THE EVE OF HIS UPCOMING PSYCHIC EXPLORER CRUISE OUT OF FORT LAUDERDALE NATIONALLY RENOWNED MEDIUM MARK ANTHONY WEIGHS IN ON THE OTHER SIDE BY KEVIN KAMINSKI INTO THE MYSTIC M ark Anthony first saw the light during his darkest childhood moment a neardeath experience at age 4 during which he went into convulsions and struggled for air. At a certain point Anthony would later learn he stopped breathing. What happened next he says can be best described as a glimpse into the hereafter--a brief encounter 40 SEPTEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM with beautiful energies translucent outlines that resembled human figures made of water. They were sweet and they said to me Mark you have to go back he recalls. The next thing I remember is being in an ambulance and someone screaming We have a pulse It wouldn t be the last time that the fourth-generation psychic medium would make contact with the spirit world. Some 15 000 readings into a career that has produced countless national television appearances and speaking engagements--as well as two best-selling books including last year s Evidence of Eternity-- the Psychic Lawyer continues to bring a scholarly approach to a discussion that produces its share of skeptics. Despite the naysayers Anthony has seen increased interest in spiritualty and the afterlife especially as the public stigma of reaching out to the other side through non-traditional means has diminished. Today psychic powers are openly discussed for the most part Anthony says. That said there are still countries in the world where people like me are put to death. Anthony a Central Florida resident is in the process of making South Florida his business hub thanks in large part to the psychic explorer cruises that will be sailing out of Fort Lauderdale--the first of which the Mystical Mayan Cruise departs on Oct. 22. It s like the spiritual version of an Indiana Jones movie Anthony says. The licensed Florida attorney who studied mediumship at England s Arthur Findlay College which advances spiritualism and psychic sciences shares some of what he s learned with Lifestyle. MYSTICAL MAYAN CRUISE E When Oct. 22-27 Ship Princess Cruises Royal Princess What Join psychic Mark adventure departing from Fort Lauderdale that includes stops in Costa Maya and Cozumel to explore Mayan ruins. During the two travel days at sea sea Anthony will conduct presentations on Mayan culture and the science of the afterlife as well as gallery readings where he connects audience members to loved ones on the other side. Contact Call 615.452.7077 to book the cruise--and mention summer special for an added discount. Triple play There are mediums who are strictly visual or strictly auditory. I see things hear things and feel things. I tend to get a lot of description and detail. Answering the critics For those who believe no proof is necessary. For those with closed minds no proof may be possible. Those who ve read my books or listened to my lectures know that I m not preying upon people s grief. What I tell individuals is that they have to wait at least six months after the death of a loved one. It s during that window when (emotions are still raw) where the charlatans like to come in. But after six months there is some emotional stability. If it s something a person wants to engage in I tell them that a medium-assisted connection with a loved one will not make everything better. It is however an important therapeutic step in the journey through grief. In the beginning When I was 4 I started seeing spirits. My grandfather had recently died as well as some of my father s relatives. I started referring to them as my invisible friends. My parents (both of whom possess advanced psychic abilities) quickly picked up on this. They sat me down and said not to worry that it was perfectly normal--but not to talk about it with anyone other than them. Hell no I was raised in a Christian faith to believe in heaven purgatory and hell. What I ve gleaned through my studies is that there are levels and frequencies to the other side--but the supreme being doesn t punish anybody by condemning them to an eternity of suffering. There is no hell. Here s why The reason they wanted me to keep my (abilities) between us at the time had to do with my father s sister also a psychic. She had a premonition and insisted her husband stay home from his job at a steel plant in Pennsylvania. That day a cable snapped on a crane lifting thousands of pounds of steel beams--the beams landed on the machine shop where the husband worked and killed everyone inside. Instead of being grateful it aroused fear in him. He was a fundamentalist Christian who thought she was doing the work of the devil. He had her committed to a mental institution and subjected to electroshock over a period of six months. Begin again The one thing that I can say is a reality is reincarnation. The survival of conscious studies and neardeath experience studies all talk about reincarnation no matter your religion. Even atheists who have gone into the light and returned reference reincarnation. Answering the critics part II A lot of people ask How do you know you re not mentally ill The spirits that come to me are bringing accurate fact-based messages. They re not saying Go take an ax and kill. That s schizophrenia. From website presence and SEO to collateral material executives have their hands full. These are critical for the life of your business and essential for messaging. Now there is another growing aspect of marketing that has been powerful and persuasive. Using Brand Ambassadors to represent your business is an effective means of attracting customers generating attention and creating positive connotations. A Brand Ambassador by definition is someone who represents a business company or organization and embodies its corporate identity. Often a Brand Ambassador is a positive spokesperson a thought leader or community influencer. Corporate America has long ago embraced celebrities as Brand Ambassadors and modern businesses are using the concept in similar ways. The selected person needn t be a modern day star with household name recognition. Instead a well-connected person in a specific field with significant contacts and a strong presence can be an effective individual to take on this role. Entrepreneurs know who the most well-regarded professionals in their industry are. By enlisting their aid and powers of persuasion the ability to further the company s reach and attract new customers expands exponentially. For start-ups this can be a wonderful means of generating buzz and credibility as a business launches. For companies already established a Brand Ambassador can add clout or be used strategically in front of identified audiences. When developing new ideas products and services utilizing a Brand Ambassador can be an ideal opportunity to augment your marketing. It s important that your Brand Ambassador have a sterling reputation. How often have we heard about celebrity misdeeds resulting in big companies dropping the star from any further endorsements This holds true for any business the Brand Ambassador is in some ways a surrogate for the business leader or founder with the same ideals and the same passion for the business. You can t be at all places all the time and a Brand Ambassador can play an important role in relaying the message you want to get out. Vice President Boardroom Public Relations 1776 N. Pine Island Road Suite 320 Fort Lauderdale 33322 954.370.8999 CAREN BERG If you are considering hiring a Brand Ambassador keep these three thoughts in mind The person must be articulate and knowledgeable. If that person can t clearly express your ideals don t engage his or her services. The individual should be immediately recognizable by name and even better by face. Marketing has become such a visual industry face recognition is essential name recognition is not far behind. The person must be well connected. No connections no point. If you decide to go in this direction for your company keep in mind that you are still you own ultimate Brand Ambassador. It s very helpful to hire someone else for what they can add to the mix but always be your own best spokesperson. LMGFL.COM SEPTEMBER 2016 49 D I N I N G what s cooking Vegan in the Round FORK & BALLS FINDS A WAY TO ADD QUINOA AND KALE TO ITS STABLE OF SIGNATURE OFFERINGS BY KEVIN KAMINSKI T Chef Bill Bruening Peter Boulukos TRP Executive Chef & Co-Founder hose who know him best understood that it was only a matter of time before Peter Boulukos co-founder and executive chef of The Restaurant People launched a meatball place to go with the other eateries in his portfolio including YOLO S3 and Tarpon Bend. But just how many different ways could the kitchen team at Fork & Balls which opened two years ago on Las Olas Boulevard spin the edible orb best known for its work as a spaghetti topping As chef Bill Bruening can attest the possibilities continue to be endless. The creativity that goes into the different incarnations is the fun of working here says Bruening who served as sous chef at S3 before running the kitchen at Fork & Balls. From the chef s standpoint you realize that wow I can pretty much grind anything when it comes right down to it. The only thing you can t grind is the cardboard box. So that really opened up some different avenues and opportunities. It also presented a challenge or two. Like how would the restaurant accommodate non-carnivores who wanted in on the Fork & Balls experience Along with a veggie ball the F&B team has introduced a quinoa kale offering for its vegan customers--a dish remarkable for more than just its parade of rich flavors. When you re a meatball restaurant and you need a vegan option it forces you to play with different ingredients in different ways says Bruening of the entr e bathed in coconut curry sauce that includes a host of roasted vegetables and other surprises. People are so shocked by this dish they rave about it all the time. Quinoa is great for all those salads you make at home but it always takes on the flavor of whatever you do with it. This dish makes it nice and bright and refreshing. How does Bruening do it He shares a few of his kitchen secrets on the opposite page. 50 SEPTEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM 1. The binding For both the quinoa kale ball and also our vegetarian ball I needed something to bind it. If you make a ball just out of quinoa and kale it will never stay together. I couldn t use traditional mayonnaise because of the eggs. So I created a tofu mayonnaise--Dijon mustard lemon juice soybean oil tofu. We make it in-house and use that as the binder along with bulgur wheat lentils and other earthy grains. There s also a little bit of pureed eggplant to give it more give it a crispness. 2. Coconut curry sauce There s a little bit of sweetness with the coconut curry broth we use Granny Smith apples to achieve that along with a nice Pinot Grigio. 3. Quinoa It took a good few weeks to get the balance of the quinoa. Too much quinoa and the ball explodes it doesn t hold its form. Not enough and it becomes more of a roasted vegetablestyle ball. ... We had to play with the ingredients but we got it. 5. Veggies The dish includes roasted sweet potato roasted eggplant and roasted red pepper as well as roasted mushroom. If you were just eating quinoa balls in the broth it might leave you wanting a bit more texturally. So adding sweet potato for example gives it that texture. We roast that off with 4. The greens When we make the coconut torn mint cilantro and basil leaves.
