On the one hand she was perfect for the reality show--young confident gorgeous and a longtime girlfriend to ex-Miami Dolphins receiver (and current Baltimore Ravens wideout) Mike Wallace. On the other hand as noted in the standard release form that reality participants must sign the editing of a show like WAGS (which stands for Wives and Girlfriends of Sports Stars) is at the producer s discretion. For two weeks after the album s release 100 percent of the sales went toward ALS research (the sales of her 2014 album Pure Silver also raised money for the cause) so it meant that much more that The Gold Standards placed No. 1 on the Billboard chart for Traditional Jazz Album. Silver shares more about her album musical influences and fight against ALS with Lifestyle. What keeps the standards relevant Each song can transition into any time period. Through the years many of them have evolved into becoming standards of that decade as well. What s really cool is that the younger generation is listening to these songs. They re listening to Tony Bennett sing them. They re listening to Michael Bubl sing them. It makes me happy to share this music not only with the people who grew up listening to it but to new people who are falling in love with the Great American Songbook. There was a period when you stopped performing. What happened When I had my daughter my second child I caught a very rare bone F or someone who grew up in Mississippi with a sweet twang and a passion for the blues Deborah Silver couldn t be more comfortable with the Great American Songbook. The Delray Beach resident croons the classics on her second album The Gold Standards which debuted in September. It helps that the standards on the 13-song album including a duet with jazz legend Jack Jones ( I ve Got a Crush on You ) were the ones favored by her mother (a former opera singer) while Silver was growing up. But the tracks also speak to the Silver spin --a sultry blend of her influences from bluesy to soul to funk--she brings to all her music. Silver is putting a different but no less personal spin on her quest to disease. I ended up in a wheelchair unable to walk for almost a year. I got to see a whole different perspective of the world. [After recovering] I devoted myself to raising my children so I took [a break] from my career. Children learn a lot of great things in school but I also wanted to teach them about being good people giving back to their community and doing the morally right thing. I always sang to them in bed in fact I would sing the Standards to them. We d be at Mommy and Me classes talking about nursery rhymes and I would start feeling so guilty. I d say I can t believe I didn t teach my children Jack and Jill. And somebody would always make me feel better and say Yes but your children know every song to every Broadway show. How did SLAM ALS come about My daughter Madison (age 17) and I started SLAM ALS. The ice bucket challenge did so well but it just didn t get far enough. We wanted to finally SLAM the door on ALS. We re asking people to do some kind of a video that shows people slamming something. We ve brought in a lot of celebrities. Larry King slammed his suspenders. Tommy Tune slammed his tap shoes. Even Chris Evert slammed her racket. We re just hoping that more people will see this and take it on. For starters as noted by the American Bourbon Association Kentucky does not have a monopoly on the spirit it can be made anywhere in the United States (although to be fair 95 percent of it is distilled in the Bluegrass State). Also all bourbon is indeed whiskey all whiskey however does not adhere to the strict federal regulations that govern bourbon production. Then there are those who thumb their nose at bourbon s versatility. It s humbling to know the impact I ve made on lives just through spreading a positive message says the 25-year-old. It s a message grounded in the dramatic events that have redirected the Boca Raton resident s journey through life. By her senior year at the University of Florida the business administration major already had designed jewelry for the humanitarian fashion brand OmniPeace she also had launched a popular nonprofit Hello Perfect intent on building confidence in the lives of young women with selfesteem issues. I remember sitting in my apartment and thinking that my life was too perfect she says. In January 2013 Alexa s mother visited Gainesville to celebrate a milestone for Hello Perfect. When she noticed the artery in her daughter s neck throbbing she rushed her to the emergency room. Alexa was going into septic shock. Doctors induced a medical coma that lasted six days. While the photographer snaps image after striking image of the 27-year-old beauty on the bow of She s a 10 another set of cameras on the perimeter of the shoot captures the action for E Network. Cole s turn as a cover girl for Lifestyle is one of the storylines during a mid-season episode of WAGS Miami the reality spinoff that follows the lives of seven wives and girlfriends of professional athletes. Though born in New York Cole spent her formative years in Dallas and later Houston (where her parents and Wallace s parents currently live). It was there that Cole began turning heads in the real estate world selling residential properties and representing investors and private equity firms. Her rapid rise at a young age led Cole and a partner to launch their own realestate investment company a venture that didn t last. I learned a lot from that experience about trusting my intuition Cole says. There were red flags going on with that company and I ignored them. There s nothing wrong with taking a risk but I was moving too fast and making hasty decisions. I needed to regroup and change lanes. It was about that time in 2013 that Cole moved to Broward County with Wallace the talented wideout who joined the Dolphins that year after a prolific fouryear run with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The two had first met in Dallas Wallace then a senior at Ole Miss was in town for a game against Texas Tech. For about three months after that night he blew up my phone Cole says. He ended up coming back to train at the Michael Johnson Performance Center [outside of Dallas] before the NFL draft. We went to the movies and to lunch a few times. He finished his training and went back to New Orleans [his hometown]. And I realized that I was missing him. ... We ve been together now for more than eight years. The duration of their relationship gives Cole a certain cachet on WAGS especially compared to women less secure about their own situation. In the debut episode Cole boldly suggests I can teach a lot of WAGS how to keep their man I m really like their modernday Jesus. It doesn t mean however that she s above learning something from the show and her fellow cast members. For example in my personal relationship I don t communicate as effectively as I do in business. Maybe that s a reason why Mike and I aren t married yet. But now that I ve talked about it on the show I m looking at my family life and thinking Vanessa what do you want You know exactly what you want in business. What do you want from your relationship I m seeing growth in that area. Cole admits that Wallace (who doesn t appear on the show) has been nervous about WAGS even though he fully supports her moment in the spotlight. It s a little tough for Mike to swallow sometimes she says. He s [used to being] the man and he has a strong ego. But this is important to me. What happens if we don t work out I don t want to be just another statistic chasing after him for alimony and child support. I want to live my dreams and [at the same time] be in a happy relationship. SOLOMON MATTERS OF THE Two renowned contemporary art enthusiasts share their collection with a South Florida museum--and gear up for Art Basel Miami Beach There s a large portrait by artist Mickalene Thomas titled Portrait of Mama Bush I that greets visitors when they walk into the Belief Doubt exhibit on the second floor of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. It s an imposing horizontal painting created on a wood panel with acrylic and enamel embellished with rhinestones. To hear Francie Bishop Good talk about the time in 2010 when she and husband David Horvitz spotted the painting and then decided to buy it makes it all the more enchanting. We all saw it at Art Basel she recalls remembering that it became quite a competition with another collector who wanted the piece. Good and Horvitz finally purchased it but the other collector persisted and approached them. He wanted to buy it from us I finally said OK. Then it ended up that he said he didn t have the room in his collection for the painting. So now Portrait is one of the works that Good and Horvitz treasure. Good is a teacher and an 64 NOVEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM David Horvitz and Francie Bishop Good artist best known for her photographs but she s also a painter and multimedia creator Horvitz is an attorney entering his sixth year as chairman of the board of governors at NSU Art Museum. Together they have amassed a collection of about 800 pieces of contemporary art. Recently they announced a promised gift of 100 works to the museum 70 of which are on display there through the end of January as part of Belief Doubt Selections from the Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz Collection. Art is part of the couple s life. In 2006 they created Girls Club a nonprofit organization that provides exhibition and educational space to support local female artists. There are exhibits too in a beautifully rendered industrial space between Andrews and Northeast Third avenues designed by Fort Lauderdale s Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio. Next door is Good s personal art studio. The Girls Club name arose because the couple s art collection focuses mostly on female artists. At one point I looked around and thought What we have is mostly women and we should focus on that. We didn t really plan anything it happened organically Good says. Horvitz adds One of the things I m most proud of is that as much as we are collectors it s not our ambition to create our own museum. It s our ambition to support local entities and places like the NSU Art Museum. It s a passion and it leaves a legacy. Good says she spends as much time as she can trolling the galleries in New York. Much time also is spent preparing her own work for exhibit. Comus a collection of 70 works on canvas of media-saturated paintings created from high school senior yearbooks of the artist and her mother from 1942 and 1967 is now showing in Lafayette Louisiana it will be on display at the David Castillo Gallery in Miami beginning in February and then at the Coral Springs Museum starting in June. Horvitz recently has started collecting civil rights-era photography and has a collection of photos of actor Paul Newman. He was a friend Horvitz says. When Art Basel takes over the Miami Beach Convention Center (Dec. 1 4) the couple are ready to be immersed. They say they approach the international art fair differently. For Horvitz it s a chance to see a lot of different works. I like to see everything in one place he says. I like the buzz and I like the people. It s also a place to step back and see what the gallerists think the trends are--what might be popular because it changes from year to year. For Good it s about being an artist. I go in 80 percent as an artist and 20 percent as a collector she says adding that she covers all 500 000 square feet of exhibition space and attends the show for all five days (including the VIP preview set for Nov. 30 this year). Most of these events have shuttle service to and from the convention center. Beyond Basel IN MIAMI BEACH We almost always buy from the galleries that we know and trust and who are showing the artists I ve been following. But occasionally we re surprised. While they sometimes walk around the show in a group Horvitz advises against it. You go with another collector and they want to look at the stuff that interests them she says. It s like going on a group tour you re only as fast as the slowest person. Then there s the question of the challenge that modern and contemporary art poses to many viewers because of its lean toward abstraction and away from more representational art. If I were going to give advice to someone it would be that they should go slowly through a contemporary art fair or exhibit. If the art is going to have any effect you have to look at it. A quick run through doesn t do it WHEN Dec. 1 4 Horvitz says. But I am trying to make everything healthier. I try to bake instead of fry. Sometimes I ll use brown rice instead of white rice. I m starting to use coconut oil which is better for you. So you re not doing the popcorn balls--with melted candy bars--that you discovered during your time away No But those were so-o-o-o-o good Those were my favorites. When did you begin to understand the impact that Real Housewives would have on your life I guess when my extended family came on the show-- my cousins my sister-in-law. I knew then it wasn t fun and games anymore. In the beginning I did the show for fun. And then it started becoming something ugly. That s not what I m about. To me family is the most important thing. But I guess you can t control other people s actions. Why was it important to you to write Turning the Tables Everyone thinks they know me from the show but that s just a part of me. I wanted to let them know more going back to my childhood. I wanted people to understand my background how I was raised. I wanted to peel the onion for people. Hopefully after reading my book people have a taste of who Teresa really is. What s the best part of having this kind of celebrity To tell you the truth I haven t really had a chance to enjoy it yet. We started the show and it was all new to us. Then my family came on the show and then all the legal stuff happened. I guess the best part was being able to write my books sharing my recipes and story with the world and becoming a New York Times bestselling author four times. I have such amazing fans and I m so grateful for them. One of your personal revelations while away involved the discovery of your inner Zen. How has that changed you I tried yoga here and there but I never understood its true meaning and what it can do for your mind. Yes it can make your body look amazing but it s [more than that]. So I started doing yoga and meditating--and I just love it. It keeps me grounded and very calm. I love the way it makes my body feel but I love more how it makes my mind feel. While I was away I did take a step back. I had time to analyze everything in my life. I had raised four children--two of my babies were 16 months apart-- and then the show came about. I was caught in this whirlwind there was a lot going on. And I had a lot of negative people around me. What is your relationship like with Andy Cohen (the entertainer and author is an executive producer of The Real Housewives series.) In the beginning I wasn t sure about him. It was hard for me because I was taking everything personally. But I realize that it s his job [to stir the pot] from time to time. I get that. Now I love him. Do you see yourself being more cautious about the people you bring into your circle Absolutely. I had a lot of bad people around me. Are you looking forward to the day when the show ends I m living in the moment. But I hope the show keeps going. Geovanny Arroyo spent five years in active duty with the U.S. Army first with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (part of the 82nd Airborne Division) and then in Iraq with the 124th Infantry. When he returned to Florida he remained with the U.S. Army Reserves until 2012. For a few years after his retirement Arroyo says he was reckless. I drank a little alcohol the Deerfield Beach resident says. Well I drank a lot of alcohol. I was drinking six days a week. I was trying to readjust but I was also feeling indestructible. I had survived a few ambushes I survived an IED [improvised explosive device] and a lot of close calls. So to come back and die in a car accident didn t seem like it could happen. Arroyo also was plagued by headaches anxiety and sleep deprivation. He always seemed angry irritated and annoyed. Numerous doctors told him that he was neurologically and physically in perfect condition even though he felt otherwise. So Arroyo turned to The 22 Project a nonprofit organization based in Delray Beach ( founded in 2014 by Alex Cruz and his wife Erica to provide medical treatment for injured veterans and active-duty service members. The Cruzes who own Southeast Medical Imaging in Delray Beach began donating their imaging services after being approached by retired U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Antonio Colmenares in 2009. Colmenares had been working with veterans who had been receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments. He wanted access to brain scan images that could document the impact that the treatments were having on veterans brain health. The Cruzes scanned the brains of the first group that Colmenares brought to them. Within a few weeks the same Gulf War veterans returned--and the images of the brain were dramatically improved after the treatments Alex says. It was so encouraging. The treatment commonly known as HBOT delivers medical-grade oxygen to a person s pulmonary system while they are inside a pressurized chamber. It is used mostly to promote healing of wounds. It is considered a holistic treatment--one that encompasses the patient physically psychologically socially and spiritually-- when used for neurological disorders and is not currently considered a necessary medical treatment for neurological problems. Insurance coverage is uncommon for the treatments or the brain-imaging scans so far HBOT isn t standard care for veterans with brain injuries. In fact a study from the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs says hyperbaric oxygen is ineffective at treating concussion-related injuries. But after undergoing 40 treatments through the 22 Project Arroyo couldn t disagree more. Within the first week and a half I felt more energetic he says. I could sleep better the sleep was deeper. I felt that I wasn t as irritable. The treatment runs for 40 days five days a week. Brain imaging scans track the progress. When we saw how much it was helping the veterans we decided to find a way to fund the treatments Alex says of the impetus behind The 22 Project. The Cruzes of Boca Raton hope to offer full services for Gulf War veterans with traumatic brain injuries. They have partnerships with physicians and psychiatrists for evaluations and they ve partnered with treatment centers in South Florida to provide HBOT and other therapies that improve cognitive psychiatric and neurological brain function. Veterans apply for a grant from The 22 Project to obtain the treatments. We want to be able to get this to more people Erica says. Two West Point cadets Adrian Shanahan and James Callan canoed 2 320 miles on the Mississippi River to support The 22 Project this summer. They were determined to raise the profile of the treatment. They received almost 12 000 through their GoFundMe page-- which happens to be the approximate cost of a full 40-course treatment. So far The 22 Project has funded treatment for 13 veterans over the past two years--but countless more are interested. And with good reason. Regrettably 22 veterans commit suicide every day Alex says referring to an often-cited figure taken from a 2012 VA study based on research between 1999 and 2010. They served our country and protected us and now it is our turn to serve and protect them. Our hope is to prevent other servicemen and women from being counted in this very sad statistic. As long as we have the funding we re willing to treat veterans. They deserve it. When Jain got wind of a hotel for sale in the Jamaican city she jumped at the prospect of having her own piece of the laid-back town. Formerly known as the Moon Dance Resort The Cliff Hotel opened after a multimillion-dollar renovation last December. The luxurious property takes its name from its perch overlooking Negril Cliffs. Anyone seeking a party atmosphere nightlife and a beach teeming with tourists can have that daily in South uth Florida. That s how I pictured Jamaica too--beach parties rties booze and revelers until the sun came up. But west of Montego Bay Negril couldn t be further from that scene. ne. The Cliff Hotel is quite honestly the edge of paradise. In less time than it takes to get to Key West (the flight to Montego Bay is 1 hour and 40 minutes then a 90-minute car ride to Negril) I was at The Cliff with a welcome drink in hand--a potent concoction of rum ginger beer and juice served in an ice-cold copper cup. A look around the open-air lobby was a warm greeting itself. Large photographs of neighborhood residents-- Theresa the woman who owns the vegetarian restaurant around the bend and Red whose tiny store sells water and soda and hosts a fish fry Friday nights--show Jamaica s good vibes. My room--Villa 1 a 1 000-square-foot one- st Cindy Hutson s Ze also overlooks Negril Cliffs. 72 NOVEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM Picturesque views abound at The Cliff Hotel. bedroom cottage with a sweeping view of the Caribbean Sea--came with a private courtyard in front and an inviting hammock on the grass that ended up being the perfect place to watch the sunset. In the back just off the large bathroom was a secluded outdoor bathtub for relaxing under the stars. I sat out on the verandah at what would be my private paradise for the next three days breathing sea air and gazing over the cliffs. Little did I know that by my third day I d be diving off the jagged rocks from 10 feet above. (Yes cliff diving is a must in Negril for those who dare. You don t do it alone however. A lifeguard from the hotel helps you navigate the dive.) There also are opportunities for private snorkeling expeditions around the hotel s cliffs. The turquoise water is clear enough to see the white sand at the bottom and schools of colorful fish. As daring as the cliff diving can be you can be equally experimental with the food. Every meal served in chef Cindy Hutson s Zest restaurant--a mere stone s throw away from the villas yet set apart in its own building-- was an authentic blend of Caribbean spice and fresh-tothe-table catch of the fish. I watched in the morning as fishermen on small boats brought in their prizes knowing that whatever would be served at dinner had been brought earlier in the day. A popular Jamaican breakfast is saltfish mixed with ackee an African fruit with a scrambled egg texture that grows locally and is used as a main ingredient in many dishes. Another authentic option is green banana porridge a comfort food with a creamy texture and flavors of vanilla and coconut. Breadfruit fish tacos are a perfect light lunch. The brilliant creation uses the starchy breadfruit which tastes a bit like potato to create an outer shell taco. To make the taco shell the breadfruit is sliced thin then molded into the shell then fried. (And you don t have to go to Jamaica to try them--Hutson serves them at her Coral Gables restaurant Ortanique on the Mile.) Dinner typically is fish I had fresh grilled grouper one night and a hearth-roasted whole snapper the next. If that isn t relaxing enough a massage at the KiYara Spa (translation sacred place of the earth s spirit ) can put you into total bliss. Tucked away from the main buildings and built on the cliffs the open-air building is small with only two treatment beds. No need for Zen music to be piped in. With the real sounds of the sea and the fresh air the experience is soul stirring. If you want to lounge on a beach you won t find it here. There are only rocks and a small patch of sand by the large pool. Guests of The Cliff however have access to Sandy Haven Resort which is on Negril s famous Seven Mile Beach and a 10-minute drive away. With scores of dive bars burger joints and seafood shacks nearby a place such as Hardy Park Bistro beyond its quaint-yetobscure design easily sticks out. Hardy Park Bistro is the progeny of internationally trained chef owner Philip Darmon and his wife Jessica Rossitto. Located near Florence C. Hardy Park it s the dining spot downtown Fort Lauderdale long needed--a laidback restaurant serving upscale eats. In this case it s a fusion of American Mediterranean and southeast Asian flavors. I always wanted to open a restaurant Darmon says. But I just didn t know what kind. I get really upset when I see chefs who spend 20 or 25 years getting really good at something and then going and doing something totally different. All that knowledge goes wasted. I knew I didn t want that. In the last 15 years Darmon transitioned from cooking in luxury restaurants in his native Australia to journeying the open ocean on megayachts as a chef. Summers in the Mediterranean and winters in the Caribbean became routine for Darmon. In 12 years he traveled the globe and rubbed shoulders with some of its most successful people. I come from an average family Darmon explains. So to be able to pick these people s brains was phenomenal. Through working with many Americans during my time on yachts I learned that they are really positive people. I just love that. As Darmon discovered a love for American culture he also began to call Fort Lauderdale home. Since the port city is one of the world s biggest yachting bases Darmon spent most of his downtime in South Florida which is where he met Jessica. I didn t get to go home to Australia much he says. But I d come to Fort Lauderdale every so often. Jessica and I both love it here and we understand the community well. Life as a yacht chef was grueling Darmon says. Most days he d work about 17 hours leaving little time for anything else. He searched for a new challenge and decided that he wanted to merge what he learned at sea with his dreams on land. The result is a restaurant heavily influenced by Darmon s culinary past featuring an infusion of dishes and ingredients that have piqued his interests over the years. It s Philip Darmon prepares crisp-skinned salmon with ratatouille and spinach. also one with a revolving menu options change weekly often with a smattering of new dishes that even his most loyal customers don t recognize. It s an evolution he says. It keeps it interesting. I hate being tied to [a menu] for three months. But there are two dishes that always remain The H.P.B burger and the chocolate mousse. The burger is stacked with a slice of cheddar cheese crisp onion and a smear of homemade tomato chutney. The mousse is made from scratch too with a touch of pillowy cream on the side. We re in America you need a burger on the menu he says. And the mousse is just delicious. Darmon and his team pride themselves on making nearly everything in-house. They peel and slice each potato to make a day s worth of French fries and they create ice cream and sorbet concoctions to complement dessert. The product you make from scratch is far superior than what you get from a can he says. We also have an open kitchen so our customers can watch us the whole time. We don t hide anything. Recent dishes include beef tartare with a single fried quail egg grilled corvina drizzled with arugula pesto and a broccoli leek and gorgonzola dinner. Broward County s food scene is just starting he says. It s getting better but doesn t have decades of knowing good food either. It s exciting being here. Place pan in water bath and bake at 350 degrees for 90 minutes. FOR THE PRALINE T CRUMBLE Using a double boiler place white chocolate in bowl over boiling water. Stir chocolate until melted. Remove from heat crumble the praline paste and add to the chocolate. Add the paillet feulletine and mix.
