The subsequent mainstream media headlines and news stories that I saw and heard stated that calcium supplements might cause heart damage. Naturally I was concerned. Meanwhile the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) also released a statement about the study that was seemingly at odds with these news reports. Duffy MacKay ND senior vice president scientific & regulatory affairs with CRN noted This [study] confirms the safety of calcium supplementation for heart health which has been the conclusion of several large studies in recent years. So what s going on I contacted MacKay as well as Gene Bruno MS MHS provost and professor of nutraceutical science Huntington College of Health Sciences to help clarify this latest calcium conundrum. According to MacKay first and foremost it is important to understand that the study was epidemiological not clinical--there was no cause and effect confirmed. Also the subjects of the study who had the best outcome--minimal coronary artery calcification--were the healthiest eaters who obtained an adequate daily intake of calcium through diet alone. Those who ate almost as well but also supplemented with calcium to achieve adequate calcium intake fared almost as well. Possibly this is where the mainstream media determined there was a problem with supplements MacKay speculated. Y Upon further inspection of the study those who had the lowest level of calcium intake--from diet and or supplements-- actually had the highest risk of calcification. In my opinion this is the real concern brought to light by the research. Those who are not getting enough calcium--and there are many in the U.S.--are at greater risk for coronary artery calcification. Publisher Daniel McSweeney Editorial Director DanM Associate Russ Fields Publisher RussF Advertising Gary Pfaff Sales Manager GaryP Editor-in-Chief Janet Poveromo JanetP Addressing Questions So when a customer asks a retailer if it is safe to take calcium supplements how should the retailer respond MacKay suggested retailers refer directly to the study. He noted that women in particular should be aiming to get the targeted daily amount of calcium through diet or a combination of diet and supplementation. The minimum daily calcium requirement is 1 000 milligrams (mg) a day for women ages 50 and younger and 1 200 mg for women over 50. The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine has established the tolerable upper intake level for calcium is 2 500 mg daily for adults 19-50 2 000 mg daily for adults 51 and older. To help put this in perspective in terms of calcium in foods there are 300 mg of calcium in a cup of milk and 240 mg of calcium in a cup of cooked spinach. MacKay suggested keeping a food journal for a week to track calcium intake and determine supplementation needs. Bruno said don t stop using your calcium supplement and make sure your diet and supplements provide a broad range of other nutrients as well. He recommended in addition to calcium getting 2 000 IU daily of vitamin D3 and 180 mcg daily of vitamin K2 as MK-7. Look for more coverage of this study by Bruno in his Supplement Science column in the December issue of the magazine. As for myself I will continue to take a 600 mg calcium supplement daily. Many individuals may be quick to automatically associate it with marijuana which is only half the story. In reality hemp also called industrial hemp dates back more than 10 000 years. It is in fact derived from the same species (Cannabis sativa) as marijuana but the latter variety of the plant is grown for its high delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) value (3-20 percent). On the other hand industrial hemp only contains a THC content ranging from 0.05 to 1 percent according to the North American Industrial Hemp Council. Although it is not legal to grow hemp in the United States (unless it is research related) other nations such as Canada and members of the European Union are authorized to do so. Therefore U.S. manufacturers can produce products containing hemp legally. This allows for endless possibilities especially with its advantages and its multiple uses. O BY NICHOLAS SARACENO er option. This is particularly important during a time when studies suggest that not enough vitamins and minerals can be found in an average meal. Garnering Attention The hemp story is trending because convention as we know it is ending noted Stuart Tomc vice president of human nutrition at CV Sciences Inc. a brand in California that is involved with cannabidiol-based medicine. Ask anyone under 30 who works at a health food store if hemp should have ever been illegal in the first place. Prohibition ending is driving its popularity for now but it is the results and reputation of hemp that will fast track it into the herbal hall of fame. It should be noted that cannabidiol has been authorized for investigation as a new drug for which substantial clinical investigations have been instituted. Therefore products containing cannabidiol are outside the definition of a dietary supplement. FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) considers a substance to be authorized for investigation as a new drug if it is the subject of an Investigational New Drug application (IND) that has gone into effect. There is an exception if the substance was marketed as a dietary supplement or as a conventional food before the new drug investigations were authorized. However based on available evidence FDA has concluded that this is not the case for cannabidiol. Hemp Benefits As referenced to earlier hemp is essentially derived from the same plant as its THC-containing counterpart so by theory they have similar advantages. Essentially hemp produces results without the psychoactive effect. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for many cognitive and physical processes said Ted Campdesuner director of operations and compliance at North American Herb and Spice in Illinois a company that manufactures a line of hemp products. The body produces endocannabinoids which bind to receptors throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. The most relevant receptors CB1 and CB2 are found for the most part in the brain and immune system. When endocannabinoids bind with and activate CB1 and CB2 receptors it results in many physiological processes that regulate appetite memory pain immunity and mood. Campdesuner added whole food 10 VITAMIN RETAILER hemp extract is a natural source for phytocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are beneficial because they support a healthy endocannabinoid system. In addition according to Kelly Saunderson manager of public affairs at Canada-based Manitoba Harvest Foods a company whose foods feature this plant such as through its Hemp Hearts and Hemp Heart Toppers hemp is also filled with protein among other nutrients. Hemp foods are packed with plant-based protein and omegas noted Saunderson. For example one 30-g serving of Hemp Hearts contains 10 g protein and 10 g omegas. That s double the protein of a similar serving size of flax or chia seeds-- and a broader spectrum of omegas. Hemp protein contains all ten essential amino acids. Hemp protein contains no known allergens and is easy to digest. Hemp foods also contain omega-3 and omega-6 including the rare omega-6 gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is shown to help balance hormones may help reduce inflammation and promotes healthy skin and hair (which is why see hemp beauty products). Hemp is the only food source of GLA. Regardless of one s opinion on the matter most can agree that having an additional way to gather the day s daily values is not holding anyone back but rather providing consumers with anoth- Extraction From a health standpoint there are a variety of ways to extract nutrients from hemp such as through pressing the hemp seeds olive oil and carbon dioxide. However it is important not to cause any damage to the product when using the techniques. CO2 extraction is a process by which compounds can be extracted at a very low temperature therefore preventing damage or denaturing of the material. Olive oil and cold press are other methods by which key nutrients and enzymes are maintained intact as part of the extraction process said Campdesuner. What is most important is to avoid heat and solvents during the extraction process. Heat can essentially burn off terpenoids that are beneficial to the material and toxic solvents such as WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NOVEMBER 2016 Go to herbatint for info about this advertiser Go to naturalfactors for info about this advertiser TRENDINGNOW hexane butane and acetone can be found in residue form even after heat and pressure are applied to remove them. Ultimately the versatility surrounding industrial hemp is undeniable as a look into its future will provide perspective. U.S. soil for the first time in decades. There is a lot of learning and opportunity ahead. Manitoba Harvest s cofounders helped legalize industrial hemp in Canada back in 1998. Research trials were instrumental in getting hemp legalized so hopefully the same will be true for the U.S. market. Events such as these suggest that as time continues to progress society is arguably beginning to become more accepting of the hemp trend drifting away from a more traditional approach. Jason Mitchell ND co-founder and president of California-based MetaCan a company that offers a HempFusion line of vegetarian liquid capsule phytocannabinoids said he feels that the future is bright but also pointed out that with such a new concept this is only the beginning. There s obviously a lot of research and understanding on the fact that there is an endocannabinoid system said Mitchell. There is this interaction with these compounds in the plant and how it supports the body and how it interacts with this system in the body. But starting to draw conclusions and being able to map out a future for it-- we need a lot more work. At times some ideals may take longer than others to gain acceptance. Social cultural and technological changes are driving alternative thinking and convention--as we know it is dying said Tomc. The promise of hemp and its billion-dollar crop date back to Popular Mechanics VOL. 69 February 1938--it s only taken hemp 78 years to become an overnight success. VR Gazing Into the Future As mentioned earlier it is only legal to grow hemp in the United States if it is done for research purposes. After more than a half-century ban President Barack Obama signed the 2014 Farm Bill making this official. With the 2014 Farm Bill allowing hemp to be grown for research purposes in states where industrial hemp is legal to grow the market is very exciting right now said Saunderson. C East Brunswick NJ 08816 JanetP NPA Developing Safe Harbor Dietary Ingredient Database in Response to NDI Draft Guidance he Natural Products Association (NPA) announced that it is in the later stages of developing a comprehensive safe harbor list of preDSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994) dietary ingredients for the industry based largely on evidence from past media reports advertising and other public sources. NPA has a treasure trove of useful labels and label information dating back to the 1940s from our retailing magazines which will be used as evidence of dietary ingredients sold in interstate commerce before October 15 1994 said NPA CEO Dr. Daniel Fabricant. There are industry lists from the late 1990s and T NPA s own list from 1996. In short we have the evidence FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) is seeking to make these determinations and we look forward to engaging FDA on developing a safe harbor list. We cannot afford to sit on our hands any longer. Likewise FDA s recent NDI (New Dietary Ingredient) guidance stated it was unlikely to regard a listing in Herbs of Commerce [1992 edition] as being solely determinative of whether a dietary ingredient was marketed as such before October 15 1994. The 1992 Herbs of Commerce book includes house plants and herbs not intended for human consumption so it was not recognized by FDA as an authoritative list of pre-DSHEA dietary ingredients. It also focuses on herbs and does not include the myriad of other dietary ingredients falling within the statutory boundaries of a dietary ingredient created by DSHEA added Fabricant. NPA hopes to complete the Safe Harbor database of dietary ingredients in the near future and will engage FDA in the coming months on its methodology and evidence. In issuing its ruling the Circuit Court found that LeadClick Media LLC recruited affiliate marketers that used fake news sites to drive internet traffic to the LeanSpa website. LeadClick knew that the news sites were phony and actively participated in creating their content. The decision is the first by a court of appeals holding the operator of an affiliate marketing network liable for deception by third-party marketers. In the ruling the Circuit Court also found that LeadClick bought advertising banner space from legitimate online news sites with the intent to resell it for use with fake news sites thereby increasing the likelihood that a consumer would be deceived by the content. Separately the Court found however that relief defendant CoreLogic Inc. LeadClick s parent company could not be held liable for 4.1 million that it had collected from LeadClick and was sought by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) to provide consumer redress. In granting the FTC s request for summary judgment the court ordered LeadClick to disgorge the 11.9 million it received from LeanSpa as payment for its affiliate marketing services. It also ruled that LeadClick s parent company CoreLogic had to disgorge 4.1 million in ill-gotten gains it received from LeadClick as part of the 11.9 million total judgment. LeadClick and CoreLogic appealed the district court s ruling leading to the circuit court decision. When NOW introduces their more than 50 new products each year a cross-functional team dedicated to new product development has meeting the high expectations of natural products consumers foremost in their minds. Jim Emme CEO of NOW Health Group Inc. said NOW has experienced 30 consecutive years of growth by staying true to its mission of providing value in products and services that empower people to lead healthier lives. According to NEXT Forecast 2016 U.S. consumer sales of natural organic and healthy products are forecasted to expand 64 percent from 153 billion in 2013 to 252 billion by 2019 more than four times the projected growth rate of mainstream consumer packaged goods. In addition to setting an example of true transparency as an obligation to industry growth NOW shares some of the top macro trends that will continue to drive product innovation in 2017. Truth in Labeling Truth in labeling is a key transparency denominator and an important way to build consumer trust as they shop according to values based on product and ingredient factors. Probiotics Get Specific The probiotics market for foods and dietary supplements continues to proliferate as gut health digestive health and immunity remain top wellness concerns. And since the pets market closely follows the human market probiotics and digestive health supplements for pets will be the next big boom for an industry that s expected to approach 1 billion by 2017 ( Recent research has identified topical use of probiotics as having skin health benefits so personal care will likely be the next big area of growth for probiotics. Adaptogens and Stress Relief Products Soar A 2015 study by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that Americans are getting more stressed out with a particular increase among adults reporting extreme stress and 24 percent saying they were highly stressed in 2015 compared to 18 percent in 2014 (APA August 2015). These circumstances open the door to consumer demand for adaptogens a specific subset of herbal supplements that are gaining recognition. Vegan Products in Demand Vegan has become a mainstream dietary practice amassing a following of consumers who believe not just in a more ethical eating behavior but who are largely seeking cleaner products overall. Convergence of Convenience According to Food Business News sales of natural organic and better-foryou products are expected to grow 8.1 percent annually to 226 billion by 2018. But innovation must cater to consumer behavior and for many that means offering healthier on-the-go options that actually taste good--whether it be snacks or light meals. FDA appears to be attempting to shift the burden of demonstrating reasonable expectation of safety for vinpocetine on the industry by using the hook that it can t qualify as a dietary ingredient according to the Natural Products Association. Vinpocetine has five acknowledgements from the FDA in their New Dietary Ingredients (NDI) Database. This means that vinpocetine has already undergone intense scrutiny five times over by the leading authority on food safety in the U.S. Each time FDA responded with a letter stating that they had no concerns over the ingredient or the data provided in their safety dossiers. From the FR notice FDA does not appear to have any clear safety signal based on SAERs or other means. However the agency is looking to remove the ingredient via a rendering that they have been silent on for approximately 20 years regarding the ingredient s status. FDA will be accepting comments from the public until November 7 2016. In addition to engaging government on the matter NPA will be reviewing the FDA s publication reaching out to our members to assess its impact on the dietary supplement industry. Budoff s group found that AGE slowed the progression of total plaque by 80 percent reduced the accumulation of soft plaque and demonstrated a regression of non-calcified (technically known as low-attenuation) plaque which is the most vulnerable component of atherosclerosis. The other studies also found marked improvement in cardiovascular risk factors. The study from the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit University of Southampton U.K. is the first to link maternal serum levels of nicotinamide a naturally occurring vitamin and related metabolites to the risk of atopic eczema in the child. The researchers believe the findings support the concept that eczema partly originates as a baby develops in the womb and could reveal ways of reducing the risk of the skin condition. Nicotinamide cream has been used in the treatment of eczema but the link between the mother s levels of nicotinamide during pregnancy and the offspring s risk of atopic eczema has not I been previously studied said Dr. Sarah El-Heis the study s lead researcher from the University of Southampton. The findings point to potentially modifiable influences on this common and distressing condition. The research published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy assessed the amount of nicotinamide and related tryptophan metabolites during pregnancy in 497 women that took part in the Southampton Women s Survey. The rates of eczema in their children at ages 6 and 12 months were studied. Results showed that offspring of mothers with higher levels of nicotinamide had a 30 percent lower chance of developing atopic eczema at 12 months. There was an even stronger association with higher levels of anthranilic acid a tryptophan metabolite. Nicotinamide can improve the overall structure moisture and elasticity of skin and therefore could potentially alter the disease processes associated with eczema the researchers said. The study showed a gradual association between higher maternal nicotinamide and anthranilic acid levels and a lower risk of atopic eczema suggesting that the development of eczema is not simply prevented by the presence of these nutrients. Professor Keith Godfrey director of the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre in Nutrition added More research is needed to investigate this interesting association but the findings are further evidence of the potential benefits of eating a healthy balanced diet during pregnancy. For more information visit Chemical Exposure Linked to Lower Vitamin D Levels xposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may reduce levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. The study is the first to find an association between EDC exposure and vitamin D levels in a large group of U.S. adults. EDCs are chemicals or mixtures of chemicals that can cause adverse health effects by interfering with hormones in the body. The Society s Scientific Statement on EDCs examined more than 1 300 studies that found links between chemical exposure and health problems including infertility obesity diabetes neurological problems and hormone-related cancers. Nearly every person on the planet is exposed to BPA and another class of endocrine-disrupting chemicals called phthalates so the possibility that these chemicals may even slightly reduce vitamin D levels has widespread implications for public health said the study s first author Lauren Johns MPH a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Vitamin D plays a E broad role in maintaining bone and muscle health. In addition low vitamin D levels have been implicated in outcomes of numerous conditions such as cardiovascular disease diabetes and cancer. EDCs are found in everyday products and throughout the environment. There are more than 85 000 manufactured chemicals of which thousands may be EDCs. BPA a known EDC is often found in plastics and other consumer products. Another group of chemicals linked to hormone disruption phthalates are found in personal care products such as cosmetics children s products food packaging and medical tubing. The study examined data from 4 667 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2005 and 2010. The participants provided blood samples so their vitamin D levels could be measured. To measure EDC exposure the participants had their urine analyzed for substances left behind after the body metabolized phthalates and BPA. The study found people who were exposed to larger amounts of phthalates were more likely to have low levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream than the participants who were exposed to smaller amounts of the EDCs. The link was strongest in women. There also was an association between exposure to higher levels of BPA and reduced vitamin D levels in women although the relationship was not statistically significant in men. More research is needed into why an association exists but it is possible that EDCs alter the active form of vitamin D in the body through some of the same mechanisms that they use to impact similar reproductive and thyroid hormones said Professor John D. Meeker MS ScD senior author of the study. Confirmatory studies are needed to show whether this association exists in other populations. Social communication has quickly shifted from face-to-face interactions to Facebookto-Facebook exchanges. According to Facebook s website the networking giant has more than one billion people that log in on a daily basis and this upward trend has not slowed since its inception in 2004. Nipping at its heels are other platforms such as Instagram YouTube Twitter Google LinkedIn and Pinterest. While each of these sites has its own niche the synergy created when using multiple platforms can have tremendous benefits as the saying goes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Gone are the days when an online presence solely consisted of constructing a website with your unique URL. While websites are still a necessity they have shifted from the only source of information to the structural framework that provides housing for 34 VITAMIN RETAILER social media newsfeeds. Everybody s ridiculously stressed everybody s adrenals are shot said Karen Lauber owner of The Health Stop in New Jersey. The trend toward sleep and relaxation is a need. Increased Need for Natural Brendan Gaughran president of Liver Medic in Connecticut said that from what he s witnessed and from discussions with health food stores across the country there s an increased need for effective alternatives to what the pharmaceutical industry can offer. There are a few drivers for this he said pointing to an increasing awareness that drugs are a poor solution the standard American inflammatory diet and the ever-increasing stress in society. That increasing awareness makes natural products welcomed according to Gaughran. Educated consumers recognize the connection between induced chronic inflammation fueling adrenal fatigue which in turn reduces the body s ability to handle stress and interrupts circadian cycles. Gaughran said that manufacturers have to respond accordingly by formulating products that address potential gut discomfort essential mineral and neurochemical deficiencies in addition to adrenal support. Some manufacturers fail to address these many systems including in our physiology he said. A product s success rates drastically increase the more these physiological systems are included. When developing their products Liver Medic approaches a symptom as complex as stress or insomnia by addressing multiple physiological systems the endrocrine system especially the adrenals involuntary and voluntary muscles neurological hormone precursors and beyond. Many manufacturers do not take into account the holistic nature of stress and sleep Gaughran said. For instance a vast majority of the population have the MTHFR gene mutation. Many of these compounds play a role in our sleep cycle and ability to buffer stress. A formula must have the methylated forms of ingredients to counter this. Also inexpensive forms of minerals like magnesium are poorly absorbed and will not cross into critical areas such as the brain. Gaughran also feels that premium companies go the extra mile to remove potentially questionable ingredients like Mg stearate. This keeps the product clean of impurities and we know toxins play a major role in our ability to deal with stress he said. Andreas Koch vice president of marketing at Natural Vitality in Texas agreed that people are looking for natural solutions as most of our population complains of restlessness anxiety stress and sleeplessness. With the market for natural and homeopathic products growing at its highest rate Ian Clark founder of Activation Products in Cobourg ON Canada looks beyond the offerings of mainstream medicine. More than a decade ago his own health crisis led him to natural options he said. This is exactly what we are continuing to see all throughout the health and wellness sphere she said. A trend toward greater consumer control including individuals seeking out information outside of their doctor s offices accessing care from alternative providers and pursuing products that are naturally sourced and trustworthy. Clark added People are tired of being prescribed pills that while they may help them sleep don t help them to feel any more rested and have serious side effects including dependency. For a long time this was the only real solution that was being offered to people who had trouble sleeping. Activation Products offers its EASE Magnesium which helps people get the sleep they need waking up feeling refreshed not groggy and without side effects she said. Our primary concerns are effectiveness quality and purity Clark continued. Product adoption is also a major concern. Relaxing Herbs According to the American Botanical Council s recent report of top selling herbal dietary supplements in the Natural Channel valerian and kava are in the top 40 with growth rates of 5.9 and 14.3 percent respectively. And valerian is No. 9 in the mass market with a 4 percent growth rate. While these single herb items are popular in the broader markets customers are turning to products like those from New Jersey-based Herbalist & Alchemist for their well-crafted practitioner quality formulas addressing the concerns of sleep and relaxation. Herbalist & Alchemist CEO Beth Lambert said Our sales of David Winston s Grief Relief Serenity Compound and Emotional Relief have increased significantly this year. Adaptogens--herbs that are remarkable natural substances that help the body adapt to stress support natural metabolic functions and restore balance--are a trend that Lambert has recently noticed. Stress about family relationships jobs finances school you name it are the fundamental reasons most people cannot relax or get a good night s rest she said. And without these vital restoratives one s immune system weakens. We see more consumers looking for answers that help their own bodies adjust and that is where both traditional use and emerging science focusing on adaptogens are especially valuable. Though Lambert sees adaptogens as a recent trend she noted they date back thousands of years to ancient India and China. But serious scientific study did not begin until the 1940s in the Soviet Union she said. These and other scientific pioneers defined adaptogens as non-toxic. They produce a 40 VITAMIN RETAILER non-specific defensive response to stress and have a normalizing influence on the body. When developing products at Herbalist & Alchemist specific issues are looked at and based on David Winston s clinical use of these herbs he combines them with other supportive nervine immune or stimulating herbs to develop synergistic formulas that modulate the immune system balance stress and promote energy and support workout recovery. Herbalist & Alchemist supports retailer sales through education Lambert said. We have monthly herbal webinar salons on specific topics for our retailer and practitioner customers that are very well attended she noted. David Winston s many books and lectures are a wonderful resource. Our monthly newsletter features links to good information. We actively use social media to connect our followers to educational opportunities or interesting research. Oregon s Wild Harvest also has an herbal line that s described as safe to use regularly without the side effects of prescription medications and over the counter sleep products. According to company co-founder Randy Buresh RN If you can get off to sleep and stay asleep then you are going to be a healthier happier person. There s nothing better than a good night s sleep. Some of the more common safe and effective herbals according to Buresh are skullcap valerian passionflower hops freshy milk oat tops and lemon balm. Buresh said that addressing the cause of the sleep and relaxation disturbance is essential to establish a true foundation of wellness. There are a group of herbs called nerviness which are nerve tonics or calming herbs that help a person to relax without the powerful overwhelming effects of sedatives he explained. These herbs help to restore emotional balance and provide natural ways to nourish the nervous system. With consumers researching a company s practices and reputation study- ing labels and looking for whole herbs without a long list of other ingredients as well as products that are gluten-free non-GMO and USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) certified organic products that are manufactured in the U.S. Oregon s Wild Harvest considers all of these things by finding the right combinations of herbs that will work in harmony with the body s own natural sleep patterns Buresh said. In fact the CDC reports that more than 300 000 men lose their lives to cancer every year--particularly skin prostate lung and colorectal cancers. These health threats can be managed by making smart lifestyle choices including regular screenings with a health professional exercising good nutrition and weight management limiting alcohol intake wearing sunscreen not smoking and stress management. The Baby Boomer generation (ages 51-69) is now 76.4 million strong said Dr. Paz Eilat chief executive officer and chief medical officer at Allied BioNutrition in California. These 76.4 million Baby Boomers represent close to one-quarter of the estimated 2012 A U.S. population of 314 million and about half are men he continued. As the invincibility of youth gives way to the reality of aging cardiovascular health remains a focus of many Boomers. And while male Baby Boomers are smoking and drinking less Eilat pointed to a U.S. Census Bureau report showing that the vast majority of male Boomers are overweight or obese which could affect cardiovascular health. We are aging and the concern for aging well is certainly there said Barbara Roll vice president of marketing at California-based derma e. And it s not just our older population that is taking an interest ... younger generations want to maintain good health as well as a youthful appearance. Concern over chemicals that may be present in products has impacted how customers are shopping. Consumers care more about what they are putting in and on their bodies and they are looking for natural products to improve their health. State of the Market Eilat reported that data from the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health revealed that one in three American adults takes at least one dietary supplement each day. According to an August 2014 survey indicates that among U.S. adult males 65 percent reported taking dietary supplements Eilat stated. Not only are more men using supplement products to support overall dietary intake they are more likely to regard supplementation as an effective way to improve health. Marci Clow MS RDN at Californiabased Rainbow Light agreed that this category is continuing to grow. The Council for Responsible Nutrition s 2015 CRN Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements suggested that 44 percent of the males who use dietary supplements take them to support overall 42 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NOVEMBER 2014 health 30 percent said they take them for energy and 28 percent for both immunity and heart health she said. Clow also noted that research from Mintel suggested that 40 percent of men consider stress is a top health concern. Men not only want to prevent disease but also improve the quality of their life in other areas including joint health immune health digestive health and cognitive function added Eilat. This is a prime opportunity for dietary supplement companies to create products focused on men s health trends. In addition to dietary supplements men are turning to topical products to protect their skin from environmental stressors including sun damage and to diminish the signs of aging. An aging population is causing a shift in trends as well as technology and how people gain information reported Roll. The need for convenience due to lack of time is still very much on trend said Roll and specifically within skin care we are seeing at home treatments including serums peels and face paper masks as super on trend at the moment. Deirdre Fitzgerald marketing and public relations manager at W.S. Eilat shared the results of a double-blind placebo controlled clinical study published in the scientific journal Food and Nutrition Research in April 2016 that examined the effect of the proprietary Licorice Root Extract on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in individuals with increased oxidation. Following one year of Allied BioNutrition s licorice root extract consumption the mean CIMT has shown a statistically significant reduction he said. This suggests that our unique ingredient may attenuate the development of oxidation and promote healthy blood circulation in the arteries factors that are of profound importance to the cardiovascular health of Baby Boomer men. The prostate continues to grow until a man enters his thirties however around the age of 45 further enlargement may occur which can result in urinary issues. Growing older raises your risk of prostate problems. According to the National Cancer Institute the three most common prostate problems are prostatitis (inflammation) enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) and prostate cancer. A number of nutrients are said to help keep the prostate gland healthy. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center the primary use of saw palmetto today is to treat BPH a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Though scientists aren t sure how it works to improve this common condition some studies have shown saw palmetto to be effective at treating BPH and that it may help to reduce an enzyme in the body that promotes the growth of prostate cells. Saw palmetto may also have anti-inflammatory effects on the prostate. For prostate health Michael s Naturopathic Programs offers a glutenfree tablet called Prostate Factors containing zinc and saw palmetto as well as other herbs including pygeum and gravel root. What the Customer Wants Women tend to be the most active shoppers and are often the primary shopper in the household shared Clow but my opinion is that more men are now becoming major purchasers of products to support their own health. Ramona Billingslea marketing manager at Betsy s Health Foods in Houston TX agreed. We have a growing number of men who come in shopping for their own health as opposed to leaving the health shopping to their wives she reported. When it comes to what they are looking for Billingslea said that a growing number of customers come to the store with a doctor s recommendation in hand which she viewed as a great trend that shows the medical community is embracing more and more the possibilities of filling nutritional gaps with supplements. Many customers also come into the store after having seen a product online looking for a more informed opinion. Customers today care about more than just staying youthful and looking good. According to Kora Lazarski of SPINS The gluten-free market continues to show steady growth and is now a 26 billion market. Technavio predicts the gluten-free packaged food market to grow at around 6 percent over the next several years. For retailers to capture part of the gluten-free pie it is critical that they understand the needs of their customers and how their merchandizing prepared foods and catering can meet those needs. Gluten-free consumers vary widely in their reasons for seeking out gluten-free products and it s important that those marketing gluten-free options safely serve those who need the glutenfree diet most--those with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Is celiac disease really that serious Absolutely. Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. It is triggered by consumption of gluten the protein in wheat barley rye and their derivatives. Left untreated celiac G disease can increase a person s risk of developing other health complications such as osteoporosis infertility and even some cancers. A condition closely linked to celiac disease is gluten sensitivity. This term has been coined to describe those individuals who cannot tolerate gluten and experience symptoms similar to those with celiac disease but who lack the intestinal damage as seen in celiac disease. Gluten-free customers may ask a lot of questions about your food handling procedures but take no offense. Research indicates that 70 percent of people with celiac disease suffer from gluten exposure despite trying to stay gluten free and many in the celiac community report that they often get glutened while dining outside the home. Symptoms of gluten exposure can be debilitating and can last for days or even weeks. Your customers really want to be able to eat at your establishment and they need to have confidence that you are taking their needs seriously. To help foodservice professionals learn the gluten-free ropes Beyond Celiac offers the GREAT Kitchens Gluten-Free Training Program. Beckee Moreland director of GREAT Kitchens and who also has celiac disease offers the following tips to do gluten free the right way. 1. Understand Your Customers Start with basic education that includes understanding the medical necessity of the gluten-free diet and the gluten-free diet basics Highlight Beyond Celiac resources for a staff in-service training. Employees should be able to understand the customers needs and base their responses on facts not the mythology that often surrounds the gluten-free diet. These resources include both simple infographics that highlight the most important facts and in-depth guides that can form the foundation of this education and training. Know the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) guidelines for glutenfree labeling. These guidelines form the foundational knowledge about the rules 46 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NOVEMBER 2016 governing the use of the gluten-free label. Not all manufacturers including small specialty businesses that may be in your local community truly understand the risks in producing gluten-free products ... especially when high-risk grains like oats and millet are used. GLUTEN-FREE REGULATIONS The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) passed a rule in 2014 that requires manufacturers that wish to label their products gluten free to ensure that the products contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten and follow other guidelines about the use of ingredients derived from wheat rye and barley. Manufacturers who do not comply with the ruling can face consequences from the FDA. While restaurant and foodservice providers are not specifically included in the ruling the FDA encourages their compliance. If you offer prepared foods you must minimize the likelihood of inadvertently serving gluten to your gluten-free customers by following specific protocols. The Beyond Celiac GREAT Kitchens online course provides training on these processes and on minimizing the risks associated with ingredient sourcing. Refrain from offering medical advice. It is critical that people who maintain a gluten-free diet address to various health problems be follow by medical providers. Doctors should first screen for celiac disease and upon diagnosis provide information to ensure that the patient does not experience unintended health complications that can arise from mis-managing the gluten-free diet. 2. Merchandize Appropriately When looking at store layout there are ways you can minimize problems and show your customers that you are gluten savvy. Recognizing how things like packaging and product placement section layout and shelf tags can create clarity or confusion for those needing glutenfree foods can make all the difference in the world. Many gluten-free customers prefer to shop in a dedicated glutenfree section. Here are some concerns when foods are co-mingled Products packaged in bags especially bags with no interior liner can cause problems with cross-contact. Flour from bags can leak out and the dust can create flour clouds that can inadver- tently get into gluten-free packages. Shelf tags can be inaccurate when customers or unknowing employees move things around or reshelf differently when stocking. Bulk bins can be problematic when not cleaned completely or when scoops are moved from bin to bin. Brands that produce both glutenfree and gluten-containing products with similar packaging can be confusing to customers who know these brands for their gluten-free attributes. Nuts and other products that use voluntary may contain language leave gluten- and allergen-free customers scratching their heads. 3. Ensure Gluten-free Ingredients in Your Deli Prepared Foods Section or Catering Department If your ingredients aren t gluten free your final product won t be either. Here are some steps to making sure your ingredients are gluten free. Use as many naturally gluten-free ingredients as possible but only use gluten-free grains that are labeled gluten free since grains are at high risk for cross-contact in the field in milling in production and in transport. Reach out to a registered dietitian for help in identifying hidden sources of gluten such as brewer s yeast. Identify hidden gluten. Gluten can hide in foods such as salad dressings deli meats condiments such as soy sauce sauce thickeners and marinades. Read labels carefully--wheat is an allergen so it must be called out on a label according to FALCPA (Food Allergy Labeling & Consumer Protection Act) but gluten does not. Barley is used as a flavoring agent in many processed foods so you need to look carefully at the ingredients not just the allergen statement. Once you are confident that your ingredients are gluten free you ll need to make sure that you keep them that way. Carefully determine what you will offer and label as gluten-free from your kitchen start with naturally gluten-free options like salads and soups add gluten-free alternatives such as glutenfree buns or breads for sandwiches. Here are a few tips to help with kitchen preparation but for a comprehensive education and understanding of glutenfree foodservice protocols Beyond Celiac offers a gluten-free foodservice program GREAT Kitchens Store gluten-free ingredients away from gluten-containing items Create a dedicated station for gluten-free preparation away from airborne flour Know when separate equipment like toasters are required Use color-coded gloves utensils cutting boards to reinforce avoidance of cross-contact Remember crumbs count--as little as an 1 8 tsp of gluten-containing product can cause a reaction Clearly list ingredients on your menu and clearly label any prepared items Take special precautions to keep your gluten-free dishes away from your gluten containing ones by using barriers separate stations and other segregation techniques People with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity need to have confidence in your gluten-free claim. You can boost their trust through clear labeling and explicitly listing ingredients or you risk disappointing them and leaving them feeling alienated isolated and anxious. Jennifer North vice president of Beyond Celiac has seen it happen firsthand. I once visited a supermarket that does a great job of merchandizing their gluten-free foods and they are known throughout the region for the products and services they provide to the glutenfree community including access to registered dietitians in store she noted. But when I went to their caf I noticed the menu label and scratched my head in disbelief. It said low gluten diet friendly menu available. The customer behind me in line was newly diagnosed. She was frustrated and confused because she had no idea if she should eat there. Consistency is also important. Use plain clear language not legal jargon. If your store has a gluten-free section or icon used throughout to guide customers to gluten-free products only use that icon or logo in the foodservice section if it holds the same standard. I know of a store in my area that is recognized for understanding the needs of special diet customers and they even provide education and resources for special diet customers on their website. Their store clearly labels GF in their natural and organic section. However in their dining area GF means glutenfriendly not gluten-free North said. This inconsistent message is damaging to the brand they have worked so hard to build. VITAMIN RETAILER 47 NOVEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM GLUTENFREESPECIALREPORT 4. Sample but Sample Safely Gluten-free consumers can pay premiums as high as 30 percent for their food. Sampling is a great way to encourage them to experiment and diversify before committing to a large grocery bill of items that may end up in the birdfeeder. If you offer sampling of gluten-free items at your establishment there are some additional things to keep in mind. Care needs to be taken to avoid cross-contact with dips and spreads. If you have a gluten-free hummus to sample for example make sure that all of the items that are used for the tasting are also gluten-free. Sampling is a great way to promote new gluten-free products especially to families. With so many choices and ingredients try before you buy increases the odds that a customer will be pleased with her or his purchases. Educate your sample servers on what is gluten free and why customers may ask about it. Use clear signage for the brand and free-from ingredients. Have the package handy so customers can read it to decide if it s right for them. Always always always pay attention to sampling preparation. There is nothing more frustrating than entering a store to see a sample of gluten-free hummus containing a slew of crumbs from wheat crackers or even worse gluten-free pizza prepared on the rack in a non-dedicated toaster oven. 5. Support and Educate Your Customers The gluten-free retailer can also play a vital role in assisting their shoppers in staying gluten safe in their own homes by modeling best practices and encouraging clear labeling of foods once the customer gets home. A survey done by Beyond Celiac reveals that more than two-thirds of respondents live in a mixed household with both glutenfree and gluten-full eaters. Labeling spreads condiments butter and any other item that might be a zone for cross-contact is crucial for the glutenfree family member(s) to stay safe. Likewise dedicating a toaster and utensils is as critical at home as it is when eating out. The gluten-free retailer has a unique opportunity to help their newly-diagnosed customers who may not have access to resources to guide them as they embark on the gluten-free diet. First and foremost point them to GettingStarted for great information for those who have to go gluten free as well as friends family members and those in the community who want to be supportive. Providing this type of care and attention to your gluten-free customers may seem like a burden. But these considerations will differentiate you and your brand and provide significant value that equals loyalty increased sales and abundant referrals. Training your staff to meet the needs of special diet customers also creates a culture of compassion that benefits your entire customer base and will reap long-term rewards to your business. As a prohormone it can be converted into testosterone and or estrogens in various peripheral target tissues throughout the body.1 However plasma DHEA decreases about 80 percent between ages 25 and 75 years.2 This is determined by measuring the blood marker for measuring DHEA called DHEA-S. D 40 and if their sexual function isn t what it used to be. Consider the following research on DHEA supplementation. DHEA Supplementation in Older Men and Women In a double-blind placebo-controlled study 8 280 healthy men and women (60 79 years old) were given 50 mg DHEA or placebo daily for a year. The results were that supplementation reestablished young concentrations of DHEA-S and modestly increased testosterone and estradiol levels. The authors concluded that 50 mg day DHEA administration over one year normalized some effects of aging but does not create supermen superwomen (doping). In another six-month study 9 18 men and women (aged 72-74 years) received 50 mg DHEA daily while another 18 men and women of similar age served as a control group. The results were that bone mineral density (BMD) of the total body and lumbar spine increased (P 0.05) fat mass decreased (P 0.01) and fat-free mass increased (P 0. 05) in response to DHEA replacement. DHEA replacement also resulted in a significant increase (P 0.05) of about VITAMIN RETAILER 53 DHEA Supplementation in Men With ED A study6 was conducted on 85 patients with ED caused by hypertension diabetes and neurological disorders or from unknown causes. All of the men received 50 mg DHEA daily for six months. Results showed that DHEA treatment was associated with statistically significantly improvement in scores relating to frequency of penetration and maintenance of erections after penetration. In another study 7 this time one that was double-blind randomized and placebo-controlled 40 ED patients were treated with 50 mg DHEA or a placebo daily for six months. The results were DHEA treatment was associated with higher sexual health scores including the ability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. Low Levels of DHEA May Lead to Impaired Sexual Function DHEA-S levels were found to be significantly lower in the men with aging male symptoms (e.g. decrease in sexual desire libido) and in men with sexual dysfunction in a study3 involving 348 male patients. Furthermore in other studies4 5 serum levels of DHEA-S in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) were lower than in healthy volunteers. All of this suggests that it may be worthwhile for men to consider supplementation with DHEA if they are over NOVEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE 46 percent in total serum testosterone concentrations in the men and about 114 percent in the women. Adverse Reactions The advantage of DHEA over other androgenic compounds is that it is converted into testosterone or estrogens only in the specific target tissues limiting the action of the sex steroids to those tissues and leaving other tissues unaffected--thereby minimizing the potential side effects observed with other types of androgens or estrogens.10 Furthermore when DHEA was taken for one year at 50 mg day 11 no potentially harmful accumulation of DHEA-S and active steroids or other harmful consequences were seen. 10 Labrie F Luu-The V Labrie C B langer A Simard J Lin SX Pelletier G. Nevertheless there is value in assessing blood serum DHEA-S levels for individuals planning to use DHEA regularly. This is particularly important in populations younger than 40 years of age who are more likely to have naturally higher levels of DHEA. Maybe it is that tight feeling when you are late for work and you hit all red lights or the butterflies you feel before having a serious medical test. The textbook definition is that anxiety is the sense of worry apprehension and unease we feel about an upcoming event with an uncertain outcome. Psychologists view extreme anxiety as a nervous disorder. In fact it is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder in the United States. At its heart anxiety is an emotion and believe it or not it is a good thing. It may not be a pleasant experience but it has kept us alive for countless generations. Anxiety ticks off the warning that the night is too dark to venture into the forest that you should lock your doors after a string of robberies hits your neighborhood or that you shouldn t let your small children cross the busy highway alone. Without the distress that anxiety fuels our ancestors might have made many disastrous decisions and we might not be here today. Unfortunately anxiety can become problematic when it is elicited by common everyday occurrences or even by nothing at all. There is an impending sense of doom that bad things are about to happen. The neighbor s knock at the door starts the heart pounding or driving over a bridge causes headaches and sweaty palms. Suddenly you may have trouble catching your breath. Sometimes anxiety and panic attacks are so severe they are mistaken for heart attacks. In these instances the physiological response of anxiety has become somewhat disconnected from the actual trigger. And that can cause everything from minor discomfort to paralyzing fear. The causes of excessive anxiety are not yet well defined. There may be some brain chemical imbalances that play a role and there is always the influence of traumatic events not yet reconciled. There are definitely some issues with inflammation and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. But regardless of cause high levels of anxiety call for relief. High levels of anxiety can cause other health conditions or make existing health conditions worse. A study published recently in Current Psychiatry Reports found that anxiety disorders are associated with the onset and progression of cardiac disease including mortality. By restoring better mental balance all health improves. The Adrenal Connection The adrenal glands release hormones in stressful situations that stimulate the fight or flight response. These hormones give us that strange feeling in the stomach and rapid heartbeat we associate with fear. Sometimes the adrenal glands over-respond or respond without our awareness. One useful way to address one of the underlying causes of anxiety is to restore adrenal health. There are many elements that support healthy adrenal function but there VITAMIN RETAILER 55 NOVEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM HEALTHANDNUTRITION are two adaptogenic herbs that stand out ashwagandha and rhodiola. been a useful intervention. Kava is slowly rebuilding its reputation and studies are resuming on this interesting plant. Ashwagandha Adaptogens are rare and precious botanicals that neither systemically increase nor decrease functions in our body--they push toward normal. If a person has low adrenal function and they are feeling overwhelmed and fatigued ashwagandha will boost adrenal function. But if a person is highly stressed and jittery it will gently pull this excessive adrenal function back toward normal. This herb has also been shown to play a role in modulating GABA (gamma amino-butyric acid) which elicits a sense of calm. In a review of human trial results on using ashwagandha for anxiety it was found that on average anxiety measures decreased between 44 and 56 percent. Lavender Lavender scent has a demonstrated calming effect. There are many published studies demonstrating the benefits of using lavender as aromatherapy. Adding lavender to situations that provoke anxiety can be very beneficial. For example keeping a small clay scent diffuser on your desk and adding a drop of lavender oil each day can be used at work. You can add lavender to the bath or to your pillowcase. While the majority of studies examined lavender as aromatherapy there is strong evidence that internal use of lavender oil can promote sleep and relaxation. One recent study found it very useful for agitation and restlessness. This area of research is quite promising. issues were given 20 mg twice daily of this extract. The herbal product reduced anxiety significantly the first day of use and even more so after one week of use. There were also no reports of drowsiness or confusion or other adverse effects. Practitioners have anecdotally used this extract at slightly higher dosages 20 mg up to four times daily and have reported excellent benefits for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) without serious adverse effects. Since this is a single compound and not the whole herb it won t help prevent the common cold but it will help reduce anxiety. Conclusion There are many natural interventions to help address problematic anxiety levels and this list is not all inclusive. Healthy omega-3 fatty acids bound to phospholipids from salmon is my personal favorite for delivering much needed EPA and DHA to the brain. Curcumin with turmeric essential oil can play a tremendous role in reducing inflammation. Lemon balm has a proven track record for reducing nervousness and promoting relaxation. Chamomile tea and supplements also promote relaxation. There are many tools in the retailer s tool chest when offering to help customers with this very unpleasant experience anxiety. VR Rhodiola Rhodiola is another adaptogenic herb that can have profound effects on mood and health. While research is ongoing early results indicate that phytonutrients in rhodiola can bind to the GABAA-benzodiazepine site of the GABAA receptor. These technical results mean that rhodiola can improve mood and create calm without drowsiness or changes in judgment. People living in the harshest regions of China and Russia often add a snip of rhodiola root to a bottle of vodka. Over time the liquid turns a brilliant rosy red. People venturing out in extremes of weather often fortify themselves with a sip of the rhodiola alcohol or upon returning and they feel it is highly restorative. I think of both rhodiola and ashwagandha as empowering herbs that help people feel stronger and more in control despite stressful situations. Echinacea Echinacea may be a surprise to be included in this list because the vast majority of the science on echinacea has been about boosting the immune system. However the Hungarian Academy of Science has been conducting research on a unique echinacea extract of specific compounds found plentifully only in the root of one species (Echinacea angustifolia) grown under specific conditions. This single echinocoside extraction called EP107 has the ability to partially bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. This binding causes a sensation of calm and relaxation without drowsiness or interference with thinking and judgement. In an experimental model of anxiety small doses of this singular extract worked as well as the drug chlordiazepoxide known by its brand name Librium. This is a drug in the Valium family of compounds and is both sedating and mind altering. It also has high addiction potential so finding an herbal intervention that shows promise that works as well as this drug but without the severe adverse effects is a major step forward in natural therapies for anxiety. In a clinical study using this same extract people with diagnosed anxiety For a full list of references visit Cheryl Myers RN is an integrative health practitioner author and an expert on natural medicine. To date in the electronic database of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) there are 176 studies specifically on kava and anxiety. However reports of liver toxicity threw a monkey wrench into kava utilization as the extract was banned in Europe where it had enjoyed much popularity. Those bans are now being lifted as the original evidence is more closely examined and found faulty. What a disservice this has been to people for whom this might have 56 VITAMIN RETAILER WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NOVEMBER 2016 NATURALMEDICINE with Dr. Michael Murray B Y M ICHAEL T. M URRAY ND G ABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a natural calming and anti-epileptic agent in the brain. In fact it is one of the brain s most important regulators of proper function and neurotransmitter. It appears that many people with anxiety insomnia epilepsy and other brain disorders do not manufacture sufficient levels of GABA. Many popular drugs such as Valium Neurontin baclofen and Valproate act by increasing the effects of GABA within the brain. However while these drugs have numerous side effects and are highly addictive drugs not suitable for longterm use GABA in the right form is completely safe and remarkably effective without side effects. form known as PharmaGABA is produced with the help of the bacteria Lactobacillus hilgardii that is also used to ferment vegetables in the preparation of the traditional Korean dish known as kimchi. The bacteria is fed a nutrient-rich broth to produce and the PharmaGABA and it is then filtered out and concentrated. While both have the same chemical form they differ in their shape. This subtle difference may explain why studies with synthetic GABA have not shown the same clinical effects as PharmaGABA. In a head-to-head comparison study only the natural form of GABA was shown to reduce markers of stress including cortisol levels. With GABA Form Definitely Matters GABA supplements come in two basic forms natural and synthetic. The synthetic form is produced from pyrrolidinone--an industrial solvent. The natural PharmaGABA is the Clinically Proven Form PharmaGABA has been shown to increase the production of alpha brain waves (a state often achieved by meditation and characterized by being relaxed with greater mental focus and mental alertness) as well as reduce beta waves (associated with nervousness scattered thoughts and hyperactivity). Clinical studies with PharmaGABA have yielded some very interesting results. For example one study had subjects who were afraid of heights transverse a long walking suspension bridge that spanned a 150-foot canyon. Halfway across the bridge a saliva sample was obtained and blood pressure was determined. What the researchers were looking for in the saliva was the level of secretory IgA--an important antibody in saliva that helps fight infection. Typically during times of stress saliva levels drop sometimes quite precipitously. This event happened when the subjects were given a placebo but when they were given PharmaGABA the secretory IgA levels in the saliva were maintained halfway across the bridge and actually increased upon completion of the crossing. Other studies with PharmaGABA have demonstrated an impressive ability to VITAMIN RETAILER 57 NOVEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NATURALMEDICINE improve sleep quality. The ability to feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day requires us to achieve deep levels of sleep and to stay in this deep sleep for sufficient time. Unfortunately many people who do not achieve these deep levels of sleep and conventional sleeping pills actually inhibit deep levels of sleep and disrupt normal sleep patterns causing them to wake up feeling more tired when they went to bed. That is definitely not the case with PharmaGABA. In the latest study just completed in 2016 PharmaGABA was shown to shorten the time to achieve sleep by five minutes. This effect is important as it sets a better rhythm for sleeping and helps increase the deep sleep phase of the first sleep cycle. This deep sleep phase of the first cycle is absolutely critical to setting the stage for a productive night s sleep. PharmaGABA s sleep enhancing effect is especially effective in the elderly and in one clinical trial was shown to reduce nighttime awakening for urination in both men and women. With the growing concern regarding the serious side effects of both prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills natural GABA is obviously a clinically proven alternative. group were considerably more relaxed and focused compared to the placebo group. The implications are that natural GABA might be able to help with some of the issues with attention deficit disorder (ADD). Typically these kids have sleep issues feel stressed and cannot focus. Natural GABA positively impacts all of these areas and may offer some benefit to kids with ADD showing challenges in these areas. With the growing concern regarding the serious side effects of both prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills natural GABA is obviously a clinically proven alternative. Natural GABA for Athletes GABA enhances growth hormone secretion--an effect that may benefit many athletes and body builders. There is a strong relationship between sleep quality and athletic performance. Numerous studies have shown that many athletes suffer poor sleep quality and that can lead to reduced growth hormone secretion. Growth hormone is critical to muscle growth. So many athletes are not maximizing their training because of this link between sleep and muscle development. Natural GABA can help. In a recently completed double-blind study young men involved in a weighttraining program were given either 100 g of whey protein alone or in combination with 100 mg of PharmaGABA for 12 weeks. Muscle mass was determined by DEXA scan. After twelve weeks the results were quite impressive for the combination as shown in this graph How Does Natural GABA Work Once ingested PharmaGABA is absorbed easily and binds to GABA receptors in the peripheral nervous system leading to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. This arm of the autonomic nervous system is responsible for producing what is referred to as the relaxation response a physiological response that is in direct contrast to the stress or fight or flight response. This activation of the parasympathetic nervous system by PharmaGABA is measurable within five to 30 minutes after ingestion. Practical Guidelines The key to getting results with GABA is to utilize the natural form. Natural GABA can be used to improve sleep quality as well as whenever someone feels a bit stressed out. For stress take it at a dosage of 100 to 200 mg up to three times daily. To promote a better night s sleep take 100 to 200 mg at bedtime. PharmaGABA has been shown to be completely safe and without any known adverse drug interaction. However as a general guideline it is recommended to take no more than 600 mg within a six-hour period and no more than 1 200 mg within a 24-hour period. VR Michael T. The students were divided into two groups and received either 100 mg of PharmaGABA or a placebo. The students then took a math test and were also evaluated for signs and feelings of stress. The results were quite dramatic. The average number of answers answered by the PharmaGABA group was 20 percent higher than the placebo group and the number answered correctly also increased by 20 percent. These results indicate that PharmaGABA helped the kids not only think faster but also get more answers right. The study also looked at some important markers of stress. These markers included measuring the amount of a stress related hormone in the saliva as well as how much anxiety the children were experiencing during the study. The main role of the prostate is to produce a fluid that nourishes and helps to transport sperm. A healthy prostate also helps to facilitate proper erections and ejaculations. With age and under specific conditions the prostate can become inflamed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). At the age of 50 half of men suffer from BPH and at age 80 80-100 percent show signs of having BPH. When the prostate becomes inflamed it puts pressure on the bladder by compressing the urethra slowing down the evacuation of urine causing hesitancy dribbling and a weak urine flow. It also tends to push the bladder upward creating a reservoir where there is always residual urine left. If urine becomes concentrated it will cause a frequent urge to urinate that is not proportionate to the amount of urine to evacuate. During the day a frequent urge to urinate can be observed and addressed but at night such an urge can greatly affect the quality of sleep. Since the bladder never empties completely there is a more frequent incidence of urinary tract infections. The extent and severity of the symptoms is not proportionate to the degree of the enlargement. Progression of BPH is usually slow with only 14 percent of men with moderate to severe symptoms deteriorating during a fiveyear follow-up. There are three main causes of BPH include 1. Increase levels of DHT (dehydrotestosterone) that cause a multiplication of prostate cells and an increase in inflammation in prostate tissues. By Jos e Fortin Naturopath and Biochemist T With age and under specific conditions the prostate can become inflamed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). At the age of 50 half of men suffer from BPH and at age 80 80-100 percent show signs of having BPH. 2. A lack of essential fatty acids (EFAs) can also be responsible for increased inflammation of the prostate by increasing inflammatory prostaglandins. 3. A shift in the testosterone estrogen ratio towards more estrogen can also increase inflammation of the prostate but often will also have an impact on the body composition of men. Their muscles tend to decrease in size adding more fat tissues and in some case stimulating the growth of breast tissues.1 A.Vogel Prostasan is a product made from saw palmetto a plant well known for its positive effect on BPH and urinary tract infections in men. Saw palmetto has been shown to reduce the production of DHT (it is two forms instead of only one as with Finasteride.2) It also prevents DHT from binding to its receptor sites reducing its impact on the prostate cell multiplication.2 A.Vogel Prostasan also has an 85-93 percent EFA composition excellent for reducing inflammatory prostaglandins levels. The fact that Prostasan is certified organic also ensures there are no insecticides and pesticides in the formula that act as xenoestrogens and affect the testosterone estrogen ratio. Because Prostasan is made from the liquid extract of saw palmetto berries it has a particularly high concentration of this plant. The final weight of the product only represents the dry weight of the active part of the berries since all the bulk is removed when producing the liquid extract. In every tablet there is the equivalent of 3 840 mg of saw palmetto berries which makes it a one-a-day formula with excellent results and compliance. A 2011 study of 69 participants who took A.Vogel Prostasan for a total of 56 days showed a reduction of 52 percent of the IPSS (measures the severity of BPH symptoms).3 These results are similar than results obtained with Finasteride but without the side effects. When taking BPH medications side effects include a reduction of libido erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems. That same study also shows that taking A.Vogel Prostasan actually provides an improvement of 36-40 percent of the libido erectile function and ejaculation (used bSFI and Urolife QoL-9 tests for assessment of sexual satisfaction). So when taking A.Vogel Prostasan not only do men urinate more easily they no longer wake up as often in the night and their sexual performance and satisfaction are significantly improved. In Germany and Switzerland saw palmetto is extensively recommended by doctor as an alternative to watchful waiting and drug treatment in mild to moderate cases of BPH. Research continually demonstrates that by maintaining GI (gastrointestinal) tract health and proper digestion probiotics help support cellular health and perform many vital bodily functions. Facilitating Immune Response Approximately 70 percent of the immune system is contained in the digestive tract. In fact the GI tract serves as a physical barrier defending against harmful bacteria. Conversely poor digestive capability increases the toxic load and your body may not be able to defend itself against bad bacteria. Supporting Respiratory Health The respiratory and digestive tracts share a common passageway so they also share good and harmful bacteria. Dysfunction in one may easily induce problems in the other. There is increasing evidence that as probiotics work in the digestive system they are also able to regulate immune responses in the respiratory system. Addressing Allergies and Food Intolerance The right balance of beneficial bacteria helps strengthen your immune system which includes fighting off allergens. Researchers believe that probiotics can encourage the production of antibodies in babies and children that can protect them from allergies later in life. Promoting Skin Luminescence Your skin is closely connected to the GI tract. In fact both are organs of detoxification. When the digestive system s balance of bacteria is out of whack inflammation can arise resulting in a number of skin issues. Modulating Mood Emotional Well-being The digestive system has actually been called the body s second brain because it produces 90 percent of the serotonin in our bodies. This hormone not only regulates intestinal movements it is believed to promote feelings of relaxation optimism and overall emotional well-being. Maintaining Urinary Tract and Vaginal Health A woman s urogenital tract is particularly susceptible to harmful bacteria and this finely tuned environment can be easily thrown out of balance from antibiotics birth control and other factors. By restoring the equilibrium of good and bad bacteria in the GI tract probiotics help address many common female issues. Supporting Healthy Weight Management Good nutrition is essential for controlling weight. If your body isn t properly absorbing nutrients or efficiently eliminating toxins your weight may be affected. Q What should I be looking for in a probiotic Is CFU count important A People often concern themselves only with the number of bacteria in the formula known as the CFU (colony forming unit) count. Science has shown that quantity should not always be the priority. It s far more important to understand the quality of your probiotic and each strain s specific applications. For example depending on one s food sensitivities dietary benefits such as made with non-GMO (genetically modified organism) ingredients and free of most allergens may be more vital. At the very least you should select a probiotic with the following key advanced features Scientifically Supported Probiotic Strains Today the best probiotic formulas are quite sophisticated. Research has shown that a single probiotic may have many different strains--each performing different functions in your body. Therefore including probiotic strains that have been shown in research to provide benefit to a specific demographic is important. DNA-Verification Genetic--DNA--identi- fication is the only way to ensure that you re getting the most effective probiotic strains. All probiotic strains in Bluebonnet s new Advanced Choice SingleDaily Probiotic formulas have been genetically identified and characterized by the Pasteur Institute the prestigious scientific non-profit foundation dedicated to the study of microorganisms. This is important because the ability to characterize the DNA sequence of each probiotic strain is bringing to light that not all strains are created equal. Symbiotic Probiotic Strains Probiotic blends can be especially beneficial since multiple strains often act complementary to one another. Compatibility is essential. Tests have shown that dominant probiotic strains can kill off less resilient strains even before consumption. To ensure compatibility and efficacy it is important that probiotic formulas combine multiple scientifically supported probiotic strains relevant to a specific demographic (e.g . women children etc.). Made to Survive Probiotics are living microorganisms that not only have to survive the manufacturing process but also all the acids encountered as they travel through the GI tract. To protect the integrity of probiotics it is important to use advanced technology-- such as freeze-drying each strain under low temperature and pressure--which protects them from the normal acidic conditions of the GI tract (pH 3 or 4) until they reach their target site of action--the lower small intestine. Ohhira s Probiotics originated from a reverence for nature and is widely recognized for bestowing transformative and replenishing good health. It all begins with abundance of fresh herbs fruits mushrooms seaweeds and vegetables and of course clean clear spring water. A diversity of 12 lactic acid bacteria strains are added and encouraged to flourish through the patience of a multi-year natural temperature fermentation process that produces a probiotic like no other on the market today. Creating a Healthy Microbiome There are four main topics that are interrelated regarding how to create and maintain a healthy microbiome. 1. Diversity or Who is Present Diversity refers to the number of different species of bacteria a person carries in his her intestinal tract. Studies show that indigenous cultures (people with little or no exposure to antibiotics processed foods and environmental pollution) have two times greater microbiome diversity compared to average Americans.1 2. Balance Balance refers to the relative number of each species of bacteria that are present in the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. Taking high-dose (CFU) probiotics can create an unbalanced microbiome. In a recent study scientists stated the following Probiotics can be ineffective or even detrimental if not used at the optimal dosage for the appropriate purposes. 2 3. Prebiotics You must feed your probiotic bacteria well fiber specifically the non-digestible carbohydrates which are primarily found in fruits and vegetables. The human digestive system cannot break down these non-digestible carbohydrates but when they reach the large intestine colon they are the perfect food supply for your probiotic bacteria. 4. Post-biotics This refers to the metabolites that your probiotic bacteria produce. Dr. Ohhira called these bacterial metabolites the biogenic. Remember probiotic bacteria are little manufacturing plants. The reason probiotic bacteria are important is totally related to the metabolites they produce and how those metabolites influence and regulate a wide range of biological functions in your body. In his recent book The Mind-Gut Connection Emeran Mayer MD stated that your probiotic bacteria with the information stored in their millions of genes are able to produce hundreds of thousands of post-biotic metabolites. 3 An explanation of how Dr. Ohhira s process optimizes these four requirements for a healthy microbiome which results in a probiotic that delivers a much broader range of benefits than any other. A Multi-year Fermentation Process Fermentation is a process in which bacteria (or other microorganisms) cause the chemical breakdown of substances into useable end products. In the human digestive tract bacteria ferment or digest food producing post-biotic metabolites. Dr. Ohhira s fermentation process mimics the fermentation processes that take place in the human digestive tract. The process begins by utilizing 12 unique strains of probiotic bacteria. Then at seasonally appropriate times throughout the year various kinds of organically grown plant crops are added to the fermentation vats as the nutritious prebiotic food supply for the probiotic bacteria. Non-digestible plant carbohydrates (fibers) are the preferred food for your probiotic bacteria. A wider range of different types of fibers supports the growth and proliferation of a wider range of probiotic bacteria. This promotes probiotic diversity. Post-biotic Metabolites This is real secret to the success of Dr. Ohhira s Probiotics. When Dr. Ohhira s Probiotics are encapsulated after three years of fermentation you actually get three products. Each capsule contains multiple strains of probiotic bacteria along with the extensive array of prebiotics which support the growth of the probiotic. More on the Post-biotic Metabolites When Dr. Ohhira s Probiotics are encapsulated they contain a substantial dose of all the post-biotic metabolites that the probiotic bacteria have been producing during three years of fermentation (no other product can compare). The post-biotic metabolites include vitamins amino acids short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) immune system-enhancing compounds detoxifying agents cell signaling compounds and probably many other beneficial substances that have not yet been discovered. Together the curcumin and the gum produce a water-soluble suspension that can be dried and put into capsules soft gels and powders. The average particle size of the curcumin in Theracurmin is more than 100 times smaller than the average particle size of regular curcumin powder. This reduced particle size combined with the improved solubility in water is what makes Theracurmin so well-absorbed. Recent publications have extended these benefits to almost every system in the body from the widely published studies on the digestive and immune system to the nervous system respiratory cardiovascular and sports performance. The probiotic strain or strains used in each of these studies had unique properties responsible for the observed health benefit. Thus strain identity of each of these probiotic species has become very important in meeting consumer health needs. It is only through strain identification that probiotic species are differentiated between their health benefit or virulence factor. Therefore strain identity is a critical part of the quality and safety of the product. The ability of the manufacturer to verify the identity of the probiotic strain is now becoming an important quality assurance step to ensure that strain information and potency is not lost during the manufacturing process. For years NOW has been testing and enumerating the potency of its probiotic products from raw material to finished product. The company also conducts stability testing to ensure that viable dosage claims are met throughout the shelf life at recommended storage conditions. Current standard identity testing involves selective culturing biochemical and serological typing. While most probiotics manufacturers depend on their probiotic culture manufacturer s certificate of analysis to identify and enumerate the probiotic they are supplying NOW added to its state-of-the art testing facility the ability to perform genetic identity testing to verify the identity of the bacterial strains beyond the genus and species of their probiotic products. As a finished product manufacturer NOW has pioneered and devel- P oped a validated and robust genomic standards library of all the probiotic strains used in their probiotic products with the collaboration of their culture suppliers using the DuPont RiboPrinter Microbial Characterization System. Strain Identity The probiotic strains are identified by fingerprinting genomic DNA. This is a strain typing method commonly called ribotyping. The DuPont RiboPrinter Microbial Characterization System is used to automate the method and is a routine part of NOW s batch-specific testing and quality control. The RiboPrinter tracks the integrity of strain information from raw material to final product manufacturing with genetic level accuracy and reproducibility. It has the ability to differentiate strains of the same genus and species and assures advanced maintenance and stability of the probiotic culture integrity. This same feature is also used to isolate track trend and investigate contamination. This technology has been a staple of cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) pharmaceutical manufacturing for decades and NOW extends the application for the genetic identification of all their probiotic strains. This investment further reinforces NOW s commitment to ensure the highest quality standard of its products. In the future companies will need to provide greater data and substantiation that the strains in their probiotic products are as claimed on labels. FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) requirements for strain identity of new dietary ingredients and supplier verification requires manufacturers to verify the culture identity of their probiotics especially for safety. Since health benefits for probiotics are strain specific the identity of probiotic strains through genetics-based identification technol- ogy could become the new standard of quality to assure consumers that they are receiving the clinically validated strain for the label claim. The biggest challenge in probiotic testing is the culture-independent identification and concentration verification of mixed strains. New technology that involves molecular methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identification and metagenomics are being developed to further enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the identification. NOW is actively participating in the development and validation of these future methods. These new probiotic testing methods along with RiboPrinter technology are being established to ensure the safety and efficacy of the probiotics for the consumer s health benefit. Americans are living longer and they also want to remain as active as possible with reduced joint discomfort. The Celadrin Tigerettes are an excellent example. As the reigning Senior Olympic Women s Basketball champs the team has been competing (and winning) at the sport for 18 years. Along the way they have accumulated five Senior Olympic gold medals and dozens of state and regional awards. This dynamic team the only one of its kind that has a sponsor will be once again playing in the national games in Birmingham AL in 2017. The Celadrin Tigerettes know what it s like to feel pain--but also to do what it takes to reduce the discomfort including healthy diet weight and aerobic training and taking dietary supplements that include Celadrin--a supplement that is more relevant and attractive for active seniors than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 27 million Americans have osteoarthritis and 42 percent of adults with physician-diagnosed OA (osteoarthritis) report activity limitations. In addition approximately 454 000 knee replacements are performed due to OA. OA is often the result of simply aging the wear and tear of joints due to repetitive motions and the movements of life (walking sitting stretching reaching etc.). But as those joints wear they send pain signals which compel individuals to move less to truncate range of motion so as not to feel the spikes of pain. T Addressing Inflammation Celadrin a proprietary blend of esterified fatty acids is one of the most effective natural ingredients that supports healthy inflammatory response to address the sensation of pain in knees especially in the main joints--knees. In studies adults have shown remarkable benefits of reduced pain and swelling increased movement and reduction of 68 VITAMIN RETAILER inflammatory factors when using Celadrin. For example results of a double-blind multi-center placebo-controlled trial (the most scientifically validated type) published in the prestigious Journal of Rheumatology found that Celadrin when taken orally improved parameters of aging joints such as mobility and pain. In this study 64 participants between the ages of 37 to 77 were given Celadrin capsules. They were evaluated at the beginning at 30 days and at the end of the 68-day study. Compared to those in the placebo group participants who consumed Celadrin had more flexibility less aches and pain and were able to walk longer distances.1 In an earlier placebo-controlled study 40 patients with knee OA applied either a Celadrin cream or placebo cream twice daily for 30 days and were evaluated for functional performance of their knees--such as knee range of motion timed up-and-go from a chair stair climbing medial step-down test and the unilateral anterior reach. The results showed improved range of motion of the knees in the Celadrin group with no improvement in the placebo group. For example significant improvement was reported in the Celadrin group for the medial step-down test unilateral anterior reach. The authors concluded that use of Celadrin as a cream is an effective tool for improving knee ROM ability to ascend descend stairs rise from sitting walk and sit down and unilateral balance. 2 The esterified fatty acids in Celadrin have pronounced healthy inflammatory response effects such as the inhibition of the endothelial cells and decreasing the pro-inflammatory effects of other fatty acids. The special fatty acids found in Celadrin have also been shown to reduce the production of the negative immune factor IL-6 and to control other immune factors responsible for inflammation. This alone could explain some effects of Celadrin such as reduction of pain in joints affected by degradation. And certainly these functions are very important in preventing further tissue and joint damage while promoting healing. It also works by inhibiting arachidonic acid one of the main promoters of the inflammatory cascade of immune factors by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase another mediator of inflammation. It may also alter cellular membranes protecting them from the action of inflammatory cytokines or by reducing the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and CRP. Additionally the molecules found in Celadrin may also play a role in lubrication of an affected joint. This action combined with anti-inflammatory effects explain some of the significant improvements in mobility and function. A common reason is that there is insufficient air coming through the nostrils. The air passage is most confined in the nostrils with a cross-sectional area of only one-fourth of the area deeper inside the nose. This implies that the resistance to inhaled air on its way to the lungs is normally greatest at the front of the nose. By dilating the nostrils with Nozovent more air flows via the nose the underpressure in the chest can diminish to 2 cm and it takes less energy to breathe. The speed of the air through the nose lessens and becomes gentler and the palate cannot vibrate as easily. Nozovent increases the cross-sectional area in the front part of the nose from approximately 1.4 cm to 2 cm. T Does Nozovent Suit Everyone Nozovent is designed to suit most noses. To prevent it from dropping out the slightly cup-shaped sides gently press to the skin on the inside of the nostrils. The surfaces are specially designed to improve friction to the skin. The lower part is molded to the shape of the nose so that the front nasal chamber holds it up. There is no risk of nose bleeding. Once Nozovent has been inserted for a few minutes it leaves no sensation. In a Japanese study by Professor Shinkawe from Tokai University with a test group of 15 heavy snorers the snoring diminished significantly from an average of considerable disturbance to light snoring when sleeping with Nozovent. Which Materials are Used in Nozovent Nozovent is environmentally safe and transforms to water and oxygen upon combustion. It is manufactured from non-toxic medicinal plastic (UPC Class VI Plastic) approved for introduction by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). How Widespread is the Problem of Snoring It was previously thought that 10 percent of the population snored. It is now thought to be considerably more 20-30 percent have problems with snoring. In special cases snoring can lead to a temporary suspension of respiration apnea with severe consequences such as strokes heart attacks and high blood pressure. Dr. Ulf H ijer from Gothenburg has currently presented a medical report in which he proves that Nozovent has a positive effect on apnea patients. Better Sleep Fresh Mouth Test Results A total of 80 percent of a group of 50 people using Nozovent during the night thought that their sleep had improved. Sixty percent wanted to use it every night. Many of the participants in the test often slept with their mouths open previously and often woke up in the morning with dry throats. Approximately 30 percent of these complaints diminished completely and a further 50 percent had less discomfort after using Nozovent. In a study with 10 heavy snorers snoring diminished significantly. Of 50 nights 14 were completely free of any snoring whatsoever. On the average the level of snoring fell from powerful to slight--that is from an almost unendurable noise to a slight murmur. In another investigation concerning 17 snorers the pattern was the same. Most people snored less with Nozovent. Nights without Nozovent were strongly disturbed by snoring in 20 percent of cases in comparison with 1 percent when Nozovent was used. Is Nozovent Useful for Other Purposes Joggers cyclists skiers and other sports enthusiasts use Nozovent regularly. In cold weather breathing through the mouth can result in the severe chilling of the windpipe which reduces performance. Colder drier and occasionally dusty air enters the windpipe and may cause coughing. Nozovent increases the passage of air through the nose by up to 50 percent. This enables more physical exercise to be carried out with the mouth closed. Another advantage for runners for example is that the mouth stays moist when breathing through the nose. This does away with dryness of the throat which often comes from jogging. When they cycled without Nozovent and began to breathe through the mouth the systolic pressure increased by an average of 85 mm Hg. At the same load when cycling with Nozovent this pressure only increased by 70 mm Hg. VITAMIN RETAILER 69 Are There Other Advantages With Nozovent When the nostrils are dilated with Nozovent it is not necessary to breathe through the mouth and one can continue to breathe through the nose. The air one breathes in can then be warmed up by the nose as it should be. It is always a little more difficult to breathe through the nose when lying down. With Nozovent it is easier to breathe and it takes less effort to get the air down into the lungs. NOVEMBER 2016 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM 2016 ScienceofSupplements WINTERISSUE Superior Source 4510 S. Guys usually think that theirs is heart attacks caused by high cholesterol. But both are wrong. Breast cancer may be top of mind but heart disease claims more women than the next seven causes combined. Likewise the billions spent advertising cholesterol-lowering drugs blur the fact that cholesterol numbers are just one controversial aspect of heart health. In fact half of those who die from heart attacks had normal cholesterol High cholesterol is associated with increased incidence of heart attacks. However associated with is not a causal relationship. It only means that the two factors often appear together--like fire trucks and house fires. The real question is why does cholesterol go up The body uses cholesterol to make hormones and vitamin D. It is also a repair molecule and many experts believe that cholesterol is the fire truck at the scene of the blaze (damage to arteries). Smoking heavy metals environmental chemicals and toxins released by bacteria in our gums are a few suspected causes of the damage. Cholesterol itself can become an irritant if oxidized and not restored by antioxidants like vitamin E. A big under-recognized cause of inflammation damage to the blood vessels is homocysteine.1 Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is a breakdown product of the essential amino acid methionine. Homocysteine elevation is linked to cancer and is a cause of deep vein thrombosis stroke (even in young women) as well as reduced physical performance in older women. The concept of homocysteine as a cardio bad guy has been investigated since at least 1969 with Harvard researcher Dr. Kilmer McCully pioneering the field. We know that as blood levels of homocysteine rise the risk of developing severe coronary heart disease rises proportionately. In one study women with the highest homocysteine measurements (the top 10 percent) had 2.3 times the heart attack risk of women in the By Martie Whittekin CCN A Supplementing B12 with folic is important in part because high blood levels of folic acid can make it harder to detect a vitamin B12 deficiency in routine blood tests. lower half of the scale. (The women with high homocysteine levels also tended to have low folic acid levels.) Normally homocysteine is converted into a harmless amino cysteine or back into methionine. Gluten sensitivity may increase homocysteine buildup but the usual problem is low B vitamins. Most nutrition-savvy doctors recommend supplementing with folic acid to help homocysteine normalize as well as B6 and B12 for their well-documented fringe benefits. Folic acid is crucial for proper cell division and so helps prevent cancer and neural tube birth defects. Low folic acid may account for 40 percent of cases of autism.2 Supplementing B12 with folic is important in part because high blood levels of folic acid can make it harder to detect a vitamin B12 deficiency in routine blood tests. Also in her book Could It Be B12 An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses Sally M. Pacholok RN said B12 deficiency afflicts one person with tremors makes another depressed or psychotic and causes agonizing leg and arm pains or paralysis ... can mimic Alzheimer s disease multiple sclerosis early Parkinson s disease diabetic neuropathy or chronic fatigue syndrome. It can make men or women infertile or cause developmental disabilities in their children ... it lurks silently stealthily increasing its victim s risk of deadly diseases ranging from stroke and heart attacks to cancer. Vitamin B6 has dozens of textbook roles including helping nerve function forming red blood cells and utilizing amino acids. It is often employed to reduce PMS symptoms. Stumbling blocks to achieving B vitamin sufficiency include 1. Lack of awareness of the importance. 2. Poor diet. 3. Supplement absorption--especially with the elderly. Stomach acid is required to produce vitamin B12 and seems needed for adequate folic acid absorption too. Those past middle age may already have reduced stomach acid and acidblocking heartburn drugs make matters worse. 4. Compliance--people do not like to swallow pills. Hopefully retailers can help with No. 1 and 2. I solve No. 3 and 4 with my clients by recommending Superior Source s NoShot Advanced MicroLingual B12 B6 Folic Acid. The tiny pellets dissolve almost instantly and allow the nutrients to go right into circulation under the tongue. Furthermore B12 is in a meaningful dose 2 000 mcg and in its preferred active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin (dibencozide). Likewise B6 is pyridoxal 5 -phosphate. No bulky pills to swallow and the tabs taste great. References 1 McCully KS. Hyperhomocysteinemia and arteriosclerosis historical perspectives. In fact one person in the U.S. dies of cardiovascular disease every 40 seconds.1 But an array of clinical studies recently published in The Journal of Nutrition report that Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) works on a number of fronts to reduce common risk factors and prevent the progression of cardiovascular disease.2 This includes the ability to lower blood pressure regulate cholesterol levels slow the progression of coronary arterial calcification reduce low-attenuation plaque and inhibit platelet aggregation. One of the biggest threats to cardiovascular health is the development of atherosclerosis--the narrowing and stiffening of arteries that can lead to reduced blood flow and eventually a heart attack or stroke. One of the published study reviews conducted by researchers at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center found that AGE supplementation had a strong potential to lower many of the cardiovascular risk factors that contribute to atherosclerosis.3 Another double-blind placebo-controlled trial which involved 55 patients with metabolic syndrome found that AGE slowed the progression of total D plaque by 80 percent reduced the accumulation of soft plaque and demonstrated a regression of low-attenuation plaque.4 Low-attenuation plaque is the most vulnerable component of atherosclerosis. Another study in the Journal which was performed by British researchers at Liverpool John Moores University analyzed the effect of AGE on platelets. Supplementation inhibited the aggregation of platelets from 14 participants by preventing chemical changes in the endothelium. When platelets clump together they can form blood clots that may play a role in a future cardiovascular event. However this study found that AGE effectively reduces the risk of platelet aggregation and the associated threat.5 Adding more evidence to the growing body of data that AGE reduces common cardiac risk factors an updated metaanalysis and research review conducted at the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Melbourne Australia suggests that AGE supplementation has the potential to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol levels in hypertensive individuals.6 It was found that AGE significantly lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to placebo. AGE also reduced total and LDL cholesterol by as much as 10 percent in those with slightly elevated levels after just two months of supplementation. As a bonus AGE enhanced immunity boosting macrophage activity as well as natural killer cells and the production of T and B cells. Along with more than 750 published scientific papers on the efficacy of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract these clinical results provide more concrete evidence that AGE can play a key role in slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. This research also confirms that AGE lowers other risk factors such as elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels making it an effective multi-pronged approach to preventing and potentially treating cardiovascular disease. Suamico WI 54313 (920) 544-8198 2625 Development Dr. Green Bay WI 54311 (920) 965-1002 THIS MONTH Debra Lemerond has been in the natural health business for 35 years--from store management in Bellingham WA to working as a regional vitamin buyer for Whole Foods Market. After moving to the Green Bay WI area she opened up a new store that emphasized unmatched service and a premium selection of foods supplements and a full line of products that help people live a vibrant healthy life. Here she talks about building relationships with customers and the recent opening of a new store. What we ve aimed for at Terry Naturally is to build relationships with our customers and meet their needs to help them every step of the way in their journey toward a healthier life. We pride ourselves on customer service and genuine friendliness. I think it really takes the hesitation and strangeness out of the picture that some people feel when they first step into a health food store. After all this may be the first time that they seek out something outside of conventional practice or over-the-counter medicines. And since it can be difficult for someone to walk into a store and start discussing health concerns with a total stranger having a helpful person who truly listens to what people are looking for is imperative. When they come back to the store and realize that you remember them and care about them it makes a big difference. Answer The new store is a larger footprint for retail space and store selection even though the overall space doesn t include a caf like our original location but does share many of the same features as our original location--a light clean welcoming environment expert staff and a premium selection of healthy foods health and beauty products and supplements. We re already seeing a great interest from customers-- existing and new--in this store. We are extremely excited by the opportunity Question Please describe the influence of the Terry Naturally line in the store. Answer I think our connection to Terry Naturally supplements--plus our store-specific branded supplements that are not part of the overall Terry Naturally line--does present a unique advantage. Essentially you have a very direct and local tie to your market combined with an ability to formulate and offer products not available anywhere else. And of course they are not the only supplements we carry. We offer products that I select based on my long experience in the field--and only products that my staff and I would happily use. In terms of supplements that includes Herb Pharm Bluebonnet Jarrow Jay Robb and Amazing Grass. The influence of the Terry Naturally line extends beyond product selection though. We are fortunate to host regular seminars with Terry (Lemerond founder and president of EuroPharma Terry Naturally) as a frequent guest and they are well attended. Our original location will still be home to these events and it s certainly part of what makes us a destination in the region. Question Describe what went into the decision to open a new store. Answer Our original location has been a destination for people from Green Bay the Fox Valley and beyond for many years and the draw for the store has been great. However the Howard-Suamico area northwest of Green Bay has been growing intensely. And it is within easier reach for people coming from farther north or from the central part of Wisconsin. It just seemed to make sense to be able to meet many of our existing customers closer to where they live and at the same time allow even more people to experience the friendly supportive environment that we ve created at our original location. Question How long has the original store been operational Has it always been in the same location Answer Our original store has been operating from its location on the east side of Green Bay for just over 10 years. What is the store history What makes it unique Green Bay and the Fox Valley region in general have long had a history of health food stores and a lot of that has to do with Terry Lemerond his first health food store and his founding of two supplement companies--Enzymatic Therapy and of course Terry Naturally EuroPharma. 76 VITAMIN RETAILER Question Answer Question How will the new store differentiate itself from the original store WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM NOVEMBER 2016 Go to nowsolutions for info about this advertiser Go to bluebonnet for info about this advertiser
